This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Here we go on a Thursday, Roland as usual, live
in Los Angeles. It's the Herd wherever you may be
and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us
part of your day. Jmack, Greg Cosel in One hour
from Now one of my favorite fifteen minutes of the week.
You play fantasy football, you bet on football. You want
to get smarter on football. Greg Cosel one hour from Now,
(00:51):
So Jmax. Sometimes you can't chase the almighty dollar. If
you own a company, you have to create an identity
and approach. Talking about individuals individually, you go chase the money.
But if you're forming a company, if you run a company,
you've got to have an identity or an approach, and
it can't all be about one hundred percent just chasing
(01:13):
every dollar because you're trying to create a brand. You're
trying to sell that to your employees.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Right, that's entrepreneur action to start the shale.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I love. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
So I was thinking about this so tonight. The Steelers,
a great franchise, a lot of trophies, go to Cleveland
to face the lousy Browns who are lousy again. But
here's what's funny. Mike Tomlin has always been a terrible
Thursday night coach. In fact, Pittsburgh is oh and seven
since nineteen eighty when competing against his division on Thursday
(01:45):
Night football, and overall on the road, he's two and eight. Now,
how is that possible? Why is this happening? So whenever
I see data that veers away from the standard production
of a person or a business, there's got to be
a reason. And I believe there is a reason. And
(02:05):
I believe Mike Tomlin stands not only on business, that
he stands for something here. It is so reportedly Mike
Tomlin and the Steelers have the hardest most physical training
camps in the NFL. They hit, they're relentless. That is
his identity. You don't think of the Steelers and schemes.
(02:26):
You don't think of the Steelers Steelers an offensive wizardry.
You think tough and physical. Mike's the most tough and
physical coach in the NFL, and his teams are. And
my guess why can Mike Tomlin be so good on
Sunday and so terrible on Thursday. Because he's old school
(02:46):
and he views Thursday night football as unnecessary and he's
not going to change his approach. His take is I'm
in it for the war, not the battle. Well, Chick
fil A does this. Chick fil A says we're not
open for business on Sunday. They could make four billion
dollars if they were open on Sunday, but they make
(03:08):
twenty two billion Monday through Saturday. Their identity is great Chicken,
and they're closed on Sunday, Faith and family. Sunday they
could make another four billion. They're making twenty two point
three and growing fast. I went there the other day.
It was three in the afternoon. There were still line.
(03:31):
The spicy sandwich is outstanding. They're not chasing the dollar. Oh,
they want revenue. They've built an empire, but they won't
change their identity to playcate or appeal to their critics.
I respect that, and so Tomlin is saying, listen, our
(03:53):
physical style, this is what we are. You make us
play a game once a year on Thursday with three
fewer days rest. When I ask my players to be
more physical in camp, more hitting during the week, more
physical than any team, it's our identity. I'm gonna punt.
(04:14):
I'm not saying I want to lose, but I'm not
changing my approach. And to prove this, when you give
the Steelers extra rest, one day extra rest, they're unbeatable
on Monday. They've won twenty two straight games Monday night
football at home. So thing about this, Mike Tomlin Sunday good,
(04:38):
Monday excellent. He will not forego or alter his identity
or his physical culture because he asks more of his players.
He asks his players to hit harder, work harder, wear
pads more often, up to league you know, ceiling. I'm
(05:00):
going to change his identity. It's the only thing that
explains why this team is so great with extra rest,
very very good with normal rest, and terrible with short rest.
Here's Mike Tomlin on facing the Cleveland Browns tonight.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
I know, as a collective, we better be prepared for
a hostile environment, the dog pound, etc. And so we
got some new people, whether they're new to us and
new to the National Football League, they need some quick
education while we do the physical work that's necessary to
position ourselves for performance.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
It's a great message. Don't change your approach in life,
don't change your identity in life chasing something that isn't necessary,
which is perfection. Nobody's going to go seventeen to no.
The teams that win the Super Bowl don't go seventeen
to no. So don't change your approach. Don't pray at
(05:58):
the altar of revenue on every corner. I'm not saying
you shouldn't take a better job, but when you're building
something in asking a lot of others beyond yourself, you've
got an identity. Stick with it. If they want to
put someone on a streaming service on Thursdays, maybe we win.
Maybe we don't. Seventeen to zero, no proof. It's better
(06:20):
than twelve and five and winning the division again. So
this happened yesterday. I've said before I don't think you
need to announce when you're leaving social media. Don't let
the door hit you on the way out. We'll all
be fine. So Lebron James said yesterday, I am taking
a break from social media. He said, it's just too negative.
(06:45):
I'll haul it you down the road getting off social
take care. Damn shame what it's come to. So Lebron
can't control x okay and Lebron first of all, is
a forty year old man with a great family in
a businesiness full time job. He shouldn't be on social
media that much once you're in your forties or close
(07:07):
to your forties, running a big business with a big family.
It doesn't drive the revenue for his business. Shoesdo Production
company does? That would sell for five hundred million today
his annual salary of almost forty million. Lebron has also
had a lot of control in his life over the heat,
over the Calves, over the Lakers, over the NBA. He's
had massive leverage and I don't resent.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Any of it.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
He has earned all all his leverage. Been a fan
since Lebron came into the league. And he's also used
social media platform since day one to stay relevant to
you know, promote his businesses, to help his empire. Certainly
granualar improvement, but he helps promote his businesses. He gets
(07:55):
the game of social media, so to suddenly be deeply
a fairy the hellscape known as X. It feels kind
of Hollywood. It's like that crazy aunt you have who suddenly,
at fifty five announces I'm no longer writing the family newsletter.
(08:15):
Oh okay, Margo, we know you're into it. Just take
a deep breath. Couple of weeks off, the newsletter will
arrive and Lebron will come back. All I'm saying is
you can leave. You probably should take breaks. Family empire.
You don't want to be on it all day, but
don't take it that seriously. Use it, don't use it.
(08:37):
I don't care. I don't resent anything Lebron's done, ever, leverage, achievement, revenue, accomplishments.
I don't resent any of it. But this does feel
sort of like when you were nine years old and
told your family I'm running away, and your mom said, okay,
see at dinner. It's social media. You get the game.
(09:00):
You've used it for twenty years to your advantage. You'll
be back. You're taking a break. Any time anybody announces
they're leaving anything, you know why they're doing it, don't you,
Because they want you to say, don't go Please. If
(09:23):
you want to leave the party, the bar, the lounge,
do what they call, what's it called an Irish exit?
Speaker 5 (09:28):
Just walk out. You'll be back.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
You want to join your friends, promote your business. People
aren't picking on Brownie. He's a six ' to one
two guard. They don't exist in the sport, and many
believe you used your power to wedge him in to
the organization. In fact, there are reports more than one
(09:51):
that the Lakers told other teams to not draft him.
You play the game, but the game has two outcomes,
some positive, some negative. You'll be back just like I
was at nine years old for dinner.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Did you see your guy Lucas all banged up? Who Luca? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Don't?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
That hasn't worked out that well for you.
Speaker 6 (10:33):
Just settle down.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
They got to the finals.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Come on Greg co Cell top of Next hour. Very
excited for Greg co Sell today as so this year,
this past last year, I went and watched bow Knicks
at or Oregon play twice. I saw him go against
the Huskies in Seattle, and I knew that Michael Pennox
and bow Nix were both gonna get drafted somewhere, probably
(10:56):
in the first round. So when I went to the game,
I sat, you know, near midfield. That I went to
the end and then I wanted to watch bon Nicks again.
I was in Utah, so I went to the Utah game.
I called up a friend and got tickets. So I
saw Bonnicks and that when I sat right behind the
Oregon bench, I wanted to see how he interacted with teammates.
I was being a total dork. And so my takeaway
is he's great with teammates. He's much more ripped in person.
(11:17):
My only question was does he have a good arm? Well,
one of the things I watched last week, it's like
he's got a better arm than I gave him credit for.
And Sean Payton. I reached out to Sean Payton and
Shawn's like, arm is not an issue. He can make
all the throws. It is not an issue. And I
think this kid because Caleb was so dynamic, and Jayden
Daniels and then JJ McCarthy played for the National Championships,
(11:40):
and then Michael Pennix had beaten bon Knicks. Everybody just
forgot about bon Nicks. And I'm watching this kid over
the last six or seven games, and I'm like, guys,
this is the best quarterback. Now. I'm not saying he's
going to be the best in ten years, but this
year he's the best quarterback. A lot of that Sean Payton,
I'm not denying if. But Drew Brees, who had Sean
(12:01):
Payton as a coach, talked about the growth of Bownicks.
Speaker 7 (12:06):
You knew it was going to take a little bit
of time this year. Hey, he's a rookie quarterback. He's
going to do rookie stuff at times. He's still developing
and understanding in a comfort level with the offense. He's
developing a chemistry with all of his receivers. So now
I think we're just starting to see. You know, hey,
we're ten eleven games into this thing, and this is
what you're seeing.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Okay, So so J McK and I'll play a little game,
and we do this game about once a month where
put me on the spot, all things considered, injuries, your age,
your production, your floor, your ceiling, all things considered, your contract,
everything considered. Who would I take over the next five years?
(12:48):
Who would I take over the next five years? The
game is called bow or no.
Speaker 6 (12:53):
This is this is going to get contentious. I'll just wonder,
all right, Bownecks or Jayden Daniels.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Colin this this is a really hard one. I think
because he's such an electric mover, I would take Jaden Daniels.
I do have a fear about injuries, but I do
think he has a chance to be the best quarterback
out of this class. So but I think this is
way closer than most people think. I would take Jaden
by an inch.
Speaker 6 (13:19):
Okay, So it's next five years, right, Who would you
rather after the next five years?
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Bo Nicks or Caleb Williams.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
Okay. I do not think it's fair because of the
coaching staff in Chicago to judge Caleb Williams. I need
a reset, come back and do this segment in one year,
in week twelve, and then I'll have an answer. I
can't judge him. Well, I think Caleb one guy's got
Sean Payton, one guy's got a tire fire if you
(13:47):
gave if you gave Caleb Sean Peyton, you think he'd
be pretty good. Probably, So I'm not gonna even do this.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Let's move on to bow Knicks or Sam Darnold.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Bonnicks. First of all, he protects the football better. He's
basically inexpensive, and Darnold does have a history because of
his style of getting banged up. So I think Bo
protects the football. He's a more natural, accurate thrower. Bonnicks.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Next five years, bon Knicks are Aaron Rodgerson.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Aaron's old, expensive, prickly, not even close bon Knicks. And
I also think bon Nicks right now is a more
accurate thrower. I really do Aaron's. I'm not sure why
it is, but I think Aaron's accuracy Maybe he's losing
his legs. Old quarterbacks los their leg I don't think
Aaron's as accurate as he used to be.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Hey, Bonnicks are one of the MVP favorites this year.
Jared Goff.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Again, I do think ideally you want a quarterback that
can move so you can move the pocket. I would
take over five years free bow Knicks over expensive Jared
gott And again Jared behind easily the most dominant offensive
line in ten years in the NFL looks perfect. I
am a huge Jared Goff fan, but he's making like fifty.
(14:58):
The other guy's making a nickel. Can go buy other players? Also,
Pocket quarterbacks are great, but didn't Matt Ryan age very quickly.
Pocket quarterbacks do not allow. By the way Garoppolo and
Brock Purdy, it's amazing how often Kyle Shanahan moves the
pocket with Purdy and he couldn't with Garoppolo.
Speaker 5 (15:19):
It matters.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
I just had to look and see if we're doing
Brock Purty or not Brock Purdy.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
I'm sorry bo Nicks or Kyler Murray.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Bon Nicks and I love Kyler. He's more durable, he's taller.
I think he's a There are things about Kyler that
I've defended, but they're true about the gaming stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
I thought he was past that.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
I like Kyler, So if I picked Bow over Kyler,
it doesn't mean I don't like Kyle. I've defended Kyler
Murray for literally five years. But we're considering everything. One's
real expensive, one's gotten injured, one's got a little bit
of baggage that I have defended but I don't love
over the next five years, I would take Bo Nicks.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Bow Knicks or Justin Herbert.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Herbert. Herbert's bigger, stronger, more powerful. Herbert is in a
short list of maybe twelve quarterbacks all time that literally
checks every single box.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
Okay, Bo Nicks or c J.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Stroud.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
C J.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Stroud is bigger, I think again.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
C J.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Stroud is being harshly judged because he has a terrible
offensive line right now. It was when he has Joe
Mixon and last year's protection either or if he has
Joe Mixon this year or just last year's protection without
Joe Mixon is really good. And he also doesn't have
an offensive coach, so some of this. He's got a
(16:40):
nice coordinator. But we have to factor in Sean Payton
is helping bow Knicks.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
If c J.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Stroud had Sean Payton, I don't think I think you'd
say c J.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Stroud bow Knicks or two a tongue.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
It's an easy one, one's expensive and one has a
history of injuries. Okay, now both both better probably than
people think. I've come around on Tua, he is an
incredibly decisive, accurate thrower in warm weather. If it's over
forty and by the way, bow Knicks could win in Miami,
(17:16):
could Tua win in December and January? In Denver where
it's twenty four degrees, there's data that would indicate he couldn't.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
All Right, here we go, Bo Nicks or Drake May.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
I think bow Knicks is a more natural, accurate thrower
of the football. I think Drake May has some better traits, taller,
stronger athlete. I will say we both like Drake May. Yeah,
Drake May is going to succeed in this league. He's
going to succeed in this league. But go look at
(17:49):
bo Nicks's last seven starts with a roster that Vegas
viewed as a five win roster.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Oh dear, bo Knicks are your guy, Russell Wilson.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Bon Nicks easy, he's in his prime.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
Cheap.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
This is not a what we got.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
A zoom through this next one? Both Knicks or Joe Burrow.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow's in all time elegant touch fluidity
third down. You know Herbert and Joe Burrow are Come on,
now we're talking. We're talking top fifteen all times.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
Two cakes, I'm gonna take a deep breath, here bo
Nicks or Jalen.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Hurts very very close. Here's what concerns me with Jalen Hurts.
He is very dependent on his legs. And bo Nicks
has proven even through nine to ten game, twelve games.
I think Bo, I think bow in the pocket is
a better pocket passer.
Speaker 6 (18:43):
He got through for sixty yards against the Jets like
six weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
In a typhoon. It was like a cyclone bomb. By
the way, you knew who was worse in that cyclone
bomb there, Aeronatis.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
We know that.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
I can't believe this dealing.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
Jalen Bonnicks or Dak Prescott.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Dak lost his mobility after the first surgery. Lisa Salter said,
he's not back for eight months. What do I get
so like again next year? Dak is whatever he is
as a cap hit, fifty million, sixty whatever he is.
One guy's free. One guy doesn't allow me to get
a number two receiver.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Not gonna fight you on that one, bo Nix or
Jordan Love.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
This is the hardest one. It's the single hardest one.
It is the single hardest one by a mile. I'm
want to pass. I don't well time out. Here's my problem.
Here's my problem. I think Jordan loves bigger, faster, better athlete,
better arm, and I like Jordan loves dude. He is reckless,
(19:43):
and that does concern I'm gonna pass. We'll do this.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
What is this?
Speaker 3 (19:49):
What we're letting you bet? The rules on the blaze
in five? I don't This is pushing.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
This is pushing the envelope here coward passing on two
of them.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Come on, Hooper, get off the fence.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
I don't know about this big fuck.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
We'll go to the last one, and we saved a
good minute here. Bonnicks are brock Purdy.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
I don't even think it's close. I think it's I
don't either Bonnicks. First of all, one guy's one's a
first round or one's of seven.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
Here we go with the draft picks like one.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Guy actually one big time in college at two places.
I mean, what's Auburn been since bonext left Stinkerny. I
don't know.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
I think you think that's a layup. Can we show
the full screen where you? I mean, some of these
colin are inexplicable.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
You're gonna get lit up like a Christmas draw well,
which one the internet I know you don't care about.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
By the way, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
I don't either, But there was a couple that were
tough like Kyler Murray is more naturally getting, so they'd
have me choosing bon Nicks over Jordan Love.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
So you basically have boon Knicks as a top ten
quarterback in the league right now?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Is that what you're saying? Look look at the list.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
By the way, last year, Izy, last year I had C. J.
Stroud as a top ten quarterback. Why can't I help
proven stuff?
Speaker 3 (20:56):
B Minx hasn't proven anything.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
He's been good, but he hasn't proven top ten.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
He's got the Denver Broncos in the playoffs. Win Week eleven, twelve, Yeah,
we twelve hasn't happened. They may beat the Raiders, who
are down three quarterbacks. This week they beat the Raiders.
Buy your playoff tickets.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon eastern non am Pacific.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
We got good stuff. Three Super Bowl rings, twelve NFL seasons,
Super Bowl MVP when they beat the Rams. Julian Edelman
is joining us Sundays on Fox NFL kickoff and he's
got a course games with names, new episodes every Tuesday.
So Jmack just brought this up. J Max always perceptive,
he's always looking at the future, even though he's a
(21:41):
Jets fan. Julian he said, he goes Belichick rumors are Jacksonville.
What if Bill calls you and says, uh Edelman wide
receiver coach, I'll pay a fourth fifty a year, no
state tax. Would you go?
Speaker 5 (21:57):
Absolutely not. He hasn't even co on my podcast yet.
I mean, what's going on, Bill? Come on?
Speaker 2 (22:03):
No?
Speaker 5 (22:04):
But on a serious note, I will never never I
don't love coaching, and you gotta love coaching to coach
under Bill. I mean, I remember seeing coaches at eight
o'clock after two hours of treatment, after the work day,
put in more time as a player. You go out
in the players lot where we all park, and you
see the coaches meeting with their families, seeing for the
(22:27):
first time in the day at eight o'clock before they
have night meetings, Like, I'm not living that life. And
Bill does that because that's what Bill did when he
was young, That's what the coaches above him made him do.
So you know it's a grind. You have to learn
the grind. If you're coaching with coach Belichick, now you
can completely change. I don't want them to, you know,
say like don't speak for him or anything, but that's
(22:48):
what I saw.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Yeah, No, I get it. Like it's I've come to
terms with how my daughter and my son view the
world and how I viewed it. I would work seventy
hour weeks. They're hard workers, but my I'll never work
in a cubicle. Now I'm not doing that, And I'm like,
I get it.
Speaker 5 (23:04):
The world changes definitely, and I think I think work
has changed in how people work has changed also where
people I think guys use their time more effectively. And
sometimes when you're in those old school systems, I remember
seeing coaches in there. I'm like, what are you guys
even doing in here? You know, you guys are coming
(23:25):
up of NASCAR names for certain plays, like that's what
they do. I mean, but like, you know, a lot
more effective and efficient working these days.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
I think let's go with Drake may Jamack liked him
more than I did out of college. He's got a
little bit of a Justin Herbert komp, though not quite
as polished as Justin was with all those college starts
at Oregon. What do you hearing, what do you seeing?
What do you like with him?
Speaker 5 (23:49):
You know what, I'm really impressed with how Drake May
has been playing these last few weeks and continually continually improving.
I was a little skeptical for you know, with Drake
is he too young? Does he not have enough reps?
Is he too raw? And he's gone in there and
he's made plays without an offensive line, and I think
(24:13):
that's been huge because I didn't think he could do that,
and the fact that they don't have anyone on the
offensive line, David Andrews their number one offensive lineman, he's
on ir he's one who gets that thing going. They
got a bunch of journey guys, and that's the toughest
thing for a young quarterback to get comfortable, is when
there's people on your lap. And he's been able to
deliver throws with people on his lap, and he's progressed
(24:35):
with his pocket presence, and he's improving each week. And
I love you know. I heard Brian Horror talking about it.
His attitude and he's out back Easton and he hears
a lot more on the camp and he's a guy
that's the runt of four athletes, all boys. His mom's
the best athlete in the family. He says, like he's
(24:57):
known what it's been to get his teeth kicked in,
and he's always had to probably fight for the scraps
at the dinner table, and that's how he plays, and
that's what he's done each week. He gets his teeth
kicked in weekly. You know, he's getting hit a lot
and he's still make him plays. And we're seeing a
lot more progression with Drake May than we're seeing with
Caleb Williams.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
So you were in a lot of big games and
a lot of times in the media we view it
as winner and loser. Kansas City Buffalo play. Let's start
with Kansas City. Is there any upside to losing to
a primary.
Speaker 5 (25:31):
Rival, especially with the wind streak that they had going?
And it's good for the people that are new to
the team and the younger players that haven't really been
there for everything. I remember when people used to come
to New England, they thought it was all sunshine and rainbows.
We're gonna win no matter what. We got this, we
have this guy, we have that guy. But they didn't
(25:52):
realize that we knew how hard it was to win
in the National Football League. I guarantee Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, Kelsey,
they all know how important it is, how hard it
is to win this league. A lot of these new
guys that come in here that think you can just
slop it out there on the field. This is a
recalibration for those guys like, hey, we're not invincible. You know,
(26:17):
we don't play our best game. There's a lot of
good teams out here. Not a lot, but there's good
teams that can beat us. So I think it's great
to recalibrate the newer guys, the younger guys, to get
them back to the standard. I'm sure Patrick and all
the the studs on the team hold throughout the year.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
How about for Buffalo now they it's funny, this is
not like Lamar against the Steelers. Buffalo beats Kansas City, Yeah,
just not in January.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
Yeah. I think it's huge for them as well, because
you still have to remind yourself that they're beatable, you know.
And this isn't the playoffs. It can go completely different
from here on out, but it's still it's great for
the guys that, you know, Buffalo has been beat down
a lot over the years in important games, and that
could be tough, and you can lose your confidence. And
(27:07):
to go in and beat a team like the Kansas
City Chiefs, who are the champs, two time defending champs,
a team that you struggle with, it doesn't matter when
it is. If you can beat them, that's gonna be
a confidence booster for your team going forward, saying hey, guys,
this is what we preach this whole week. We did it,
we executed it. We executed our game plan and lick
(27:28):
what it did. It put us in our best opportunity
to go out and beat the champs. Now if we
continue this, if we continue this, we don't read the
newspaper clippings, and we continue this, that's how we're going
to have a chance to win the Super Bowl. So
I think this is a great learning tool for them.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
So I'm gonna throw something Matt you This is a
long winded question, but old school coaches sometimes as they grow,
they still hold us onto some old school stuff. So
Belichick during COVID he said this is stupid, and he
just kind of punted the season Harbaugh did in college.
He just said it's a stupid guys like Bruce arians No,
(28:04):
I'm playing my starters in the preseason. I'm gonna a
lot of guys bail. No, I'm gonna do that, and
he redill do that. So Mike Tomlin is unbeatable as
a Monday night football coach, and he's great as a
Sunday coach. He's abysmal as a Thursday coach, and I'm
gonna I'm gonna throw this at you. He's old school.
(28:25):
He's like, listen, we're built on physicality, brutality, and I
demand a lot from my guys. If you're taking away
three days arrest, I'm not changing my identity for one
Thursday game every two years. If we win, we win.
I don't care. I'm pontinent. It's useless. You don't have
to go seventeen to know in this league you can go.
We win twelve games with the division is that they're
(28:46):
so bad on Thursday, they're unbeatable. So when he gives
his physical identity an extra day rest, your toast, Yeah
on Sunday Day, kicker. But my theory is Tomlin's old school.
He's like, I'm not changing my protocol for some streaming game. Yeah,
how are they that bad on Thursday?
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Well, I'll tell you right now, old schools not that
old school is. Will go anywhere, any place, anytime, and
we'll play your team. I guarantee that's probably what he preaches.
But I think this all stems to they have it.
They're not. They've never been a fundamentally sound offense of
team uh with Tomlin there, I mean they got the
(29:29):
back end of Big Ben when you know, the offense
was still unshaking and they had pick it and then
they had this.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
It's a lot of big plays, a lot of.
Speaker 5 (29:36):
Big plays, but not like an execution style offense. They've
never been that. Okay, So when we would approach a
Thursday night game, we would always lean on the plays
that we executed the best, no matter what could have
been the most vanilla thing ever. We were gonna simplify
the game plan because there's no practice reps, but you're
(29:56):
gonna do plays that your guys like under stand the
best and execute the best. And that's what we would
do on our Thursday night games. I mean I think
we I don't think I lost a Thursday night game
because we were so fundamentally sound as an offense and
We were a smart football team that understood what we
had to do to win this short week in this
(30:19):
game and get out healthy.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Did you like them Thursday games?
Speaker 5 (30:22):
You know, it's a lot. It's a it's a love
hate thing. It's very tough when you get older to
to to recover and get out there and play at
your highest level. But then you do get the baby
bye week at the end, so it is nice to
have that, but uh, you know, everyone deals with it,
so you have to do it. But I would say,
(30:42):
you know that goes back to the Steelers. They've never
been like a high execution offense. You look at a
lot of these teams when they go and play this
Thursday night game. They're just put there. They're calling plays
that they know they can execute. There's no new wrinkle.
Let's just we I remember we would run Hasta, which
was empty because that was our fundamental play that we
(31:03):
It was the first install of empty that we ever played,
and we knew how to get open on every single
coverage with that play, like against the Jets, and they
were always sloppy games, but you did what you had
to do to have more points at the end of
the game than the other team, and that's what you
were most comfortable with executing.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
If you want a Thursday game. Would Belichick ever go
extra day off?
Speaker 5 (31:25):
Well, by the end the CBA, you know that you
had to have a certain amount of days off in
a row. But yeah, you know, we always I don't.
I don't think I ever lost one. So wow, in
in seventeen, I think they may have lost I was,
I was on ACL, but we always had them early
(31:45):
in our year. I feel like we played the Jets slot,
we played Pittsburgh a couple of times, so we're for
that reason. And it's like Pittsburgh doesn't play no slop
in the park team when they they're playing Thursday night,
they're playing a division rival, which those are tough, you know,
so you know, yeah, you just gotta go with what
you're comfortable with and you execute the best.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
By the way, it's week twelve and I remember Trent
Dilfer saying, dude, I'm a quarterback and by week four
everything hurts. Take me to week twelve. Julian Edelman, Okay,
you are you are playing in a Thursday night off
a Sunday game?
Speaker 5 (32:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Do you wake up this morning sore?
Speaker 5 (32:25):
What age?
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Okay? Okay, twenty nine.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
Twenty nine thirty, you're achy, You're definitely achy. You wake
up today a little achy, but.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
I view profuen what do you know.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
You do a lot of active recovery week all week.
So the job of your yours is an athlete on
a Thursday night game is like Nascar. You got to
do everything to do you gotta do to get your
car running best that week. So you know, you're you're
in putting more time with treatment, more physical therapy, more
your prehab, more of your conditioning you're doing and all
(33:00):
those things because you're not gonna have physical reps of
practice to get yourself ready. So yeah, it was, it
was definitely you know, you were definitely sore. But this
is the time. Week twelve is the year, the time
of the year where you would get banged up without
a doubt six to eight. Week six to eight. If
(33:20):
you got out clean the first four or five, there's
always like a low period where the excitement of the
new year is kind of gone and the grind of
the real season is starting to hit you and you're
getting tired and you're sore, and it's the clocks change
and it's darker and you're at work, you don't see light.
So it does get like to a grind period. But
then this week twelve starting soon, this is like the
(33:43):
pastorization period of when you milk a cow when you're
trying to get the cream cream seasons after Thanksgiving.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
That sounds like a Belichick story.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
That's my story. I always call it that, baby. But
this is the time of year where you're gonna start
to see guys separate when you play in the division
and are starting to know what their team is, and
everything's about putting the tools on the belt for the
dance the playoffs. And this is when, yeah, you were
bumped up and you were sore, but there was light
(34:12):
at the end of the tunnel, and that light was
the playoffs. That light was the seeding. That light was
you know how the health of the team is. We're
getting healthy. That's what the light is. At the end
of the year, and you start seeing that week twelve,
Week thirteen, week fourteen, you're in it and this is
what we are and now we better not lose a
game because we want to play our best football at
(34:33):
the end of the year. That was good. The pasteurization
of the NFL well that's part of the time when
the creams rising the top.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (34:40):
I know it's not cream season yet. It's not cream
season for all you the milk heads out there. Let's
get in the comment section and let's see what we
are we doing this wrong. I want to know the
explanation and the analogy.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Somebody go to a dairy reddit board and get me
something on this, because I thought that was one of
the smartest things ever dropped off after show.
Speaker 5 (34:59):
Well, cream seasons for Thanksgiving, that's the cream rises to
the top.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
Baby, it's the pumpkin spice at the Starbucks thing. Okay,
games with names, who's your latest?
Speaker 5 (35:09):
We just we just did Jim Craig from nineteen eighties
Olympics goalie Miracle on ice. We did Danny DeVito. We
got Dudes on Dudes with Gronk every Tuesday. That's fun.
We're starting to get that going. It's it's been fun,
except we you know, freaking I'd go coach for Bill
if he came on my damn podcast.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
For one year.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
No, No, he can't pay me enough. They have to
be seven figures at least. Come on for coach. Geez
lived that life twelve years.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Yeah, twelve years as a player.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
Coaches get it even worse.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
You've got a social life now and a young daughter.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Yes, you got a life trying to I'm saying yes
to things I didn't know I could say yes to.
Not a custom.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Since eighth grade, you just said no the whole time.
Speaker 5 (35:56):
Anytime it was September to you know, December. Where Yeah,
I mean since you're a kid, you have football season.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Yes is a great words. It is margarita tonight. Yeah,
it's a great.
Speaker 5 (36:08):
Word in moderation. Yes is a great word.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
Great to anybody.
Speaker 5 (36:12):
Great to see you, guys,
