Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah, surprise, it's your butts computo rich shit for Colin
on the Herd becoming like a Friday tradition. Huh. You
know I'm okay with this. Hey, I'm Cafino. That is
rich and we are live from Union, New Jersey. We're
here in Jersey, dirty Jersey, eating lots of pizza, eating

(00:48):
lots of taylorham saying, which is funny, sweet truth. We
just got out of a meeting with hal Steinbrenner Jr. Yes,
and he took my word serious. And it's like a holiday.
We have lots to talk about. No more facial hair policies.
Well we'll explain for the New York Yankees. We're gonna

(01:10):
talk hockey today. What the hell usually I say hockey
schmocky not today. Plus there's some stories about being starstruck.
We got weekend hob nobbing things you need to watch
over the weekend. But I'm so excited about this New
York Yankee story. Again, Cavino and rich In. For Colin
on the Herd, the number is eight seven seven. For

(01:33):
the Herd, we got super producer Danny g g. What's
up man? Happy Friday is right? Like I said, it's
a celebration for baseball fans, for Yankee fans especially, and
it's like ding dong, We'll grow our beards, grow our beards,
our beads. Oh you said, baseball fans only Yankees fans.
No one cares except you guys. But I think it's

(01:56):
a great, great change in the right direction. And of
course we have this big sexy Ryan back at the
studios two on the ones and twos, and of course
you Fox Sports Radio Nation, thanks again for hanging out
with us. Let's get involved, let's get it going. We
are on site in Jersey because well, we did an
event yesterday, believe it or not with Dallas Goddard, which,

(02:16):
by the way, post is a very interesting question. What
happens when you start to become friendly with guys that
are not on the team you root for. I think
there's a real simple answer to that, to be honest. Yeah,
so Dallas Gonnard, super Bowl champion of the Philadelphia Eagles.
We had to do an event with him yesterday and
he's such a great dude, nice guy, reel down to earth,

(02:40):
super pumped about his win. Makes you pump for him?
The answer is simple. I think you start to like
players but still root for your team. And I think
that's okay. You could still root for your team. Rich
is a lifelong forty nine Ers fan, but you root
for that player as a man, as an individual. It's
like when you're favorite player leaves the team. You don't

(03:01):
abandon your favorite player. You still root for him a
little bit, keep your eye on him, but you keep
your alliance and your allegiance to the team you root for.
So it's really that like getting to know him. We've
had him on our show a few times. We're gonna
get him on again. We spent a whole day with
him yesterday. We met his girlfriend, right We talked about
life and the VIC three and what it's like to
be in the locker room. You get to know the

(03:23):
guy and you realize he's a down to earth, strapping
young fella. You just get to root for him and
appreciate him, and you keep your eye on him. As
simple as that, you know what, simple move on. But
I think back to when I was a little boy
and as a Niners fan. When Montana left for the Chiefs,
I didn't become a Chiefs fan, but there was a

(03:43):
part of me that's like, unless they play the Niners,
I'm certainly gonna hope cool Joe does well. Exactly. Yeah,
It's like, yeah, So now we're rooting for him and
he'll be on the show more and more often. Again,
Covino and Rich we're normally on from five to seven
on the East Monday through Friday, two to four on
the West. Just search Coveno and Rich at Covino and
Rich on social media or call us now eight, seven

(04:05):
to seven for the Herd. It's a pleasure to be
here again. That's what brought us to the East coast.
We live in Los Angeles. But they said, hey, we
need you to do some event with Dallas Gonner. Would
you like to do it? We said yes. So since
we were on the East, we said, let's go back
to Jersey, say hi to the fam, stuff our faces

(04:25):
with Taylor Ham and pizza and let's rock the herd today.
Let me tell you it's it's very interesting because I
feel like of all the shows on Fox Sports Radio
and I'm up patting ourselves on the back because it's
such a stupid story. But I feel like we were
the league leaders in joking about the Yankees' lay mass
facial hair policy, like we would often bring up young

(04:48):
Dominican players, young Latino players, you know around the league,
any young player for that matter, who wants to clean shave.
In twenty twenty five, it's a lame ass look. Very
few guys clean chafe. I couldn't believe my eyes when
I saw it this morning. We got so many messages
because again we're the bozos that bring it up often.

(05:09):
But let me read the press release from your dude,
a guy that now runs your Los Yankees. He's my dude.
Today hal Steinbrenner put a statement out my family, all
my friends, so many people. I woke up. I was like,
what now am I dreaming? It really felt like, no way,
this can't be real. Statement from Yankees managing general partner

(05:33):
Hal Steinbrenner. The memo is regarding alterations of Yankee facial
hair policy. What. In recent weeks, I've spoken to a
large number of former and current Yankees, spanning several eras
to elicit their perspectives on our long standing facial hair
and grooming policy. The fact this is even a memo

(05:56):
it's hilarious to me and I appreciate their earned and
varied feedback. These most recent conversations are an extension of
ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately, the
final decision rest with me, and after great consideration, as
a Steinbrenner, we will be amending our expectations to allow

(06:18):
our players and uniform personnel to have well groomed beards
moving forward. It is the appropriate time to move beyond
the familiar comforts of our former policy. It is and
what we said when they got Devin Williams's I think
change starts with one man, and I believe that he

(06:39):
was the catalyst and that one man because you invest
what eight point something million dollars a year for this
guy to be the closer of your team and intimidation role.
Really you're closing the game, You're the closer of the
New York Yankees, and you have this this really intimidating,
dominating beard that gives you this sense of confidence and

(06:59):
makes you feel like a badass, and then you're forced
to shave it. Now you look like a baby cherub
on the mound and pinstripes like you took away that
intimidation factor. And Devin Williams is very outspoken. He wasn't disrespectful,
but he was very outspoken on the fact that he
hadn't shaved in years and that he felt very comfortable
with his beard and more confident with his beard. So essentially,

(07:20):
you're telling them to shave, taking away their confidence. That
then becomes a counterproductive thing. And you know, we mentioned
our time with Dallas Goddard yesterday Philadelphia Eagle. Coincidentally, I
said to him, just in random conversation, I said, hey, Dallas,
he had a regular scruff going on right, a regular
twenty twenty five scruff with some facial hair. Like, if

(07:44):
the Eagles had a policy and they said you had
a shave, how would you feel about it? How would
the guys react? He's like, oh, man, that would be terrible.
He's like, nah, you would find eventually you'd find somewhere
else to play, because that's just you know, you got
to think about the off season and just out and
about is how you feel about yourself. He's like the
young guys today, No way, man, I don't like that.

(08:04):
That was his take on it. You hear how young
people's young people talk about, you know, how they want
to look when they're out there. It's about time. And again,
I'm a Yankees fan, so I believe in tradition. But
as we've said many times, sometimes tradition is making the
same mistake over and over again. And hal Steinberner said
it right now is the time. It's the perfect time.

(08:27):
And the rule is well groom beards, meaning you can't
show up to work because it's work. You know, you
got to show up like a professional. He can't show
up to work looking like hobo Williams. You can't look
like a hobo. Can't look like a member of the
four Red Sox exactly, which I always thought was a
crappy look. But working, let me tell you, it's it's

(08:47):
interesting and I think twenty twenty five is the right timing.
You know, forget it's a Yankees. A lot of these
young players have more deals than ever with brands on
social media, TikTok in Instagram x they're doing, they're pimping
more products than ever before. It's a different time, and
I think it was the right move by Steinbrenner and

(09:09):
you and I were breakfast getting some tailor ham Like
you said out here in New Jersey, it's not pork roll,
and that that argument needs to end now. I know
people in Texas or LA or Chicago, bigger cities around
the country are like, who cares about the Yankees' facial hair?
It's an ongoing joke that these dudes had to look
like they were showing up in an accounting office shaving
every day. But to the point now where you look

(09:31):
back and say, how many Yankees would have looked different?
And now are we guaranteed to get a bearded Aaron
Judge this year? A down because in the off season, Yeah,
that's how most of these young dudes are rocking it.
In fact, if you look at us right now, we
got a well groomed scruff going on. It's just the
way of the world. You're going to force these young

(09:52):
dudes throughck a cornball mustache like your dad had. Get
out of here. I mean not to backtrack a week
but less Friday we filled it for Colin and Big
Sexy Ryan and Danny G. I believe I asked both
of you. This came up literally a week ago because
I said, yo, guys, when was the last time you
shaved your face? And you guys said years and years?

(10:14):
Am I right?

Speaker 4 (10:15):
You are correct sir? Yeah? For me Danny G, it's
been since high school, my senior year. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
So when you hear this policy, it is funny how
we probably have talked about this stupid policy more than
any other show, so we could put it to rest.
But it was crazy to wake up this morning and
your phone is lit up, like, oh my god, I
hope nothing bad happened. But we are synonymous with this
stupid story. So I'm glad we got to film for
Colin today. But it is a bigger deal because so
many people laughed at the Yankees because of that. If

(10:43):
you're not a Yankees fan, you still looked at it like, yo, man,
that's the most outdated policy possible. You and your stupid
Yankee rules are so dumb. You know, if I was
a young player, I wouldn't want to play there, and
As a result, I think it became an uncool place
to play, Like what clean shaven in today's world, Like
I'd rather play for another team. Other teams are willing

(11:04):
to pay you nowadays. So yeah, if there's another team
willing to pay you, and they're a contender and they're
gonna let you grow your facial hair and be who
you want to be and be as flashy as you
want to be, and you could be comfortable in your
own skin, why wouldn't you choose that team? Yankees were
gonna lose talent as a result of this stupid rule
that they held on too, And I say stupid from
today's standard. Yeah, I understood it years ago, Like, hey,

(11:28):
you show up to work as a professional.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
So I do like the compromise, and I hate to
be that guy. There's so many sports guys especially that
were like I've been saying it. I've always told you
I was the guy. I don't know. I don't want
to be that guy. I don't want to be that guy.
But I did say that it starts with one man.
That man would be Devin Williams, and that it should

(11:50):
be a compromise. And that's exactly what you got. They're
allowed to have a well groomed beard, so they're not
coming in looking like uh like yeah, like Kevin Malar
or Johnny Damon her old man Winter. Right, you gotta
have a well groomed beard. And I think it's a big,
big move moving forward. I bet you it's a celebration

(12:13):
in the locker room, and then it poses a lot
of time. It's a little victory, right because you're here,
no one looking like Justin Turner. But look at this
in Vegas, the Yankees over underwent from ninety two to
ninety four wins. Look at that, people are predicting confidence.
The beards give him two more wins.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
But interestingly enough, are we gonna see every single Yankee
rocking some type of stubble or facial air. That's the
John Carlow. Yes, I think you're gonna see. Think of
Garrett Cole when he was an astro, not a Yankee.
Garrettle had long hair and a beard. Garrett Cole here,
I'm already starting up starting growing my official hair again,
Garrett Cole. I guarantee that goober Aaron Judge taking it

(12:50):
back to Houston roots row a little bit of a
Mullet too.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Aaron Judge definitely gonna be having a beard on opening day,
and it was Verdugo former Yan who's a free agent still,
I believe, said yeah, I just want to go play
for a team where I could wear my jewelry, grow
my beard and be me. So maybe there was a
catalyst there too, where they're like, listen, he didn't work
out for us. But you know when companies you work for,

(13:15):
when you leave or they fire you or you quit,
they're like, can you take an exit survey? And you're like, yeah,
no thanks, but they want you to take an exit
survey on the way out, like what did you look
about our company? What didn't you? They got a public
exit survey from Ford Goo and his exit survey was
I played for the franchise with the most history in
midjor League Baseball and I hated it. Well, any place

(13:37):
that you work take it to a real life situation
for everybody listening, where they won't let you be you
and you can't do you. There's a lot of places
that hire you right because they like you. Then when
you get there they change you to do it their way.
So now you're out of your comfort zone and you
can't be one hundred percent your best in a weird

(13:58):
way that matter and translates into baseball. You're probably thinking
big deals facial hair, you know. Imagine if they forced
you to wear a stupid haircut or a certain type
of facial hair at your profession. Again, I think it
would take you out of your game. You would feel
weird about it, like this isn't me. We don't need
to harp on this, like Bryce Harper, who, by the way,

(14:19):
would look weird without facial hair exactly. I don't want
to harp on this, but Danny g just one quick
more question for the room. I've never seen you not
wear a hat. What a Fox Sports was like? Oh yes, Daniel, Danny,
you can't wear a hat anymore. That would aggrevate you.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
No, I have some stylish do rags at home.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
No, no dew rags as well, Danny. You just have
to show your head. We call them don't rags here
at the offense, respectfully.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Then I would shave my dome and get a tattoo
on the top of my bald hat.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Ryan. Let me ask you, big sexy Ryan, so you
got a cool ass, like you know, grizzly beard. Imagine
like Rye Ryan would go from looking like James Harden
to James Soften. Yeah, he would. It's a confidence killer,
that is, you look cool with your beard. And I
know some guys like, really, who cares about a beard?

(15:13):
I bet your confidence and how good you feel about
yourself comes with your appearance and it's on your face.
So there's a lot of guys that are like, yeah,
I would look like a baby little boy clean shaven.
So think about that, think about that, and also think
about this. There will be people that still show up
clean shaven, and that's going to be interesting because you're like,
that's the guy who And then when you read how

(15:38):
Steinbrenner said, he said he got varied opinions. So there
were people that were like, no, I think we should
stick with the tradition. How right. There were people that
were probably on the side of keeping things the way
they were, And oh, you know, George would be rolling
over in his grave right now if you I think
George would be happy about this. Does have to evolve,

(15:58):
as we say all the time, and and we quote
our pal Gary Vaynerchuk, innovate or die, And it was
becoming a very very dated rule. It made a team
that I root for feel little corny after a while,
and I think it is a bigger day than people realize.
You know, I'm just I'm looking at some of our feedback.

(16:18):
Our boss hit us up with a link. Someone has
already done images of Yankees with different hairstyles and beard.
That's another thing, rich, Like, how do you think the
people feel like who had to live by these policies?
Like a Glaber Torres right, who his whole career with
Yankees had to show up like a little baby boy
and now you know he's a tiger. He's already got

(16:40):
the facial hair going on, but he's like, oh so
now they lift it. You know, it's like he just
missed the cuddle. Think of any social issue right where
where you grew up and they didn't allow something and
now they do. Like for all we know, Don Mattically
and Rod Gidgry are really pissed, Like, yeah, they're like, maes,
he had a lightning. He's like, I could have had
a beard exactly like all the players from Yesteryear. But look,

(17:01):
if you're a non Yankees fan, I get it you
don't care that much. But This is a big deal.
Change is a good thing and for the first time,
you're gonna see Yankee showing up, you know, with a
well groomed beard, not just a goofy mustache. Your thoughts.
That's our take on it. And again, I hate to
be the show that said we told you, but we

(17:22):
did say a compromise was inevitable, inevitable and coming soon,
and today was the day. Well, hey, your thoughts at
eight seven seven for the Herd if you want to
chime in, most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio at
Covin and Rich. I actually made Covino give me his
initial reaction this morning before he went on the air,

(17:43):
and he was actually pretty fired up. So you get
checked that out. Because it's about time, right, it really is.
It's about time, But it's also the perfect time. And
I know this sounds like a stereotape of sorts, but
you're right. As baseball grows into more of an international game,
forget about the fact that it's twenty twenty five, right,
it's an international game. You expect these young Latino players,

(18:06):
these Dominican superstars, to want to go and play for
a team like the Yankees and shave something that sort
of identifies them. No, you know what I mean, Like
it sounds silly, but it's not. That's how they look,
that's how they feel confident, especially now in twenty twenty five,
when this younger generation is all about being an individual
and I want to be me, and like there's conformity

(18:27):
is you know, not a thing people are down with
anymore at all. So it's the right move. Congrats with
the Yankees. Yeah I'm a Mets fan, but but you
know what, it also shows not only the pressure that
the players and the young people were putting on the Yankees,
and they were feeling the heat from social media and
the banter and our show. Of course, we've been talking
about it for a long time. Like I said, and
your meeting with Hell, this my meeting with Hal you know,

(18:48):
I was like I found in my fist. I'm like, listen,
how I'm serious about this flu into New Jersey for
this look as about the local here, I'm telling you
we don't want to completely shaves twenty twenty five. I
think the Yankees, who are also making a statement, and
I think we're the first to probably say it, they're
feeling the heat, the heat and they know they have

(19:08):
to compete, and they're thinking, look, we have to be
the place to be, and there's no reason for anyone
to want to turn away for this, no reason why
anyone should choose to be a Met or Dodger or
any other high market team or other team that would
allow this. We're the Yankees, and if we're going to
compete with these other teams, we have to make this adjustment. Well, hey,

(19:30):
coming up on Covino and Rich and for our buddy
Colin on the Herd. Two things I definitely want to
get to. I want you to think of the most
unpopular move your team has ever made, because the Chiefs
their speculation that they might pull the trigger on a
move that fans would lose their mind about so unpopular
moves your team has made. Plus, last night both of

(19:54):
us watched hockey. Can't even believe it.

Speaker 4 (19:56):
You heard me, Well you say what now?

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Yeah? Dan g for real, Hey, guess what. The Yankees
changed their policy And CNR watched some hockey last night
and it wasn't Blades of Steel. We weren't playing Nintendo
Blades of Steel, and we weren't playing Nintendo hockey. Where
you picked two medium guys one skinny guy and one
fat guy. Yeah. No, we weren't playing old school video games.

(20:18):
We actually watched hockey. Hockey. We have a thought about hockey.
Was on the forefront four Nation Faceoff and we'll give
you our thoughts next right here, Covino and Rich and
for Colin on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern non am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
All right, Covino and Rich and for Colin on the
Herd eight seven seven four The Herd at Covino and Rich.
If you want to play along at home, CoV I
and O and Rich, and definitely check our podcast search
Covino and Rich wherever your stream. We're live in Vegas.
Danny G's on the phones back in LA with Big
Sixy Ryan, and I think he likes that nickname. We

(21:01):
make a dad. Ryan's got to go home and be like, honey,
they call me big exc How do you not like it? Right?
And we're talking about wells. Dan Byer wants put it
on our show, cutting the head of the snake. Sometimes
you gotta cut the head of the snake. Get the
culture of the team. They did it with No Mo
in Boston and then ended up winning two World Series. Dude,
that is four year period because theo Epstein was the

(21:24):
young GM at the time and people are like, what
are you doing? He's the only guy we love here
on the Red Sox. He's the guy, he's the face
of the franchise. You're gonna get rid of No Mo.
And that's the story. And if you really want to
change the culture sometimes and you really want to move forward,
those are the moves, the unpopular moves at the time

(21:44):
that you got to make. And I believe Dan Bryer
Bayer put it in that in that perspective when we
were talking about Aaron Rodgers leaving the Jets, like, hey,
are the Jets going to keep Aaron Rodgers? You thinking no,
because if you really want to change the culture, sometimes
you got to get rid of that. They got to
get rid of that guy. Shout out to our buddy
d b uh Covino rich In for the Herd. And
this comes up because there's a there's a sentiment out

(22:06):
there that the Chiefs cutting Travis Kelcey sort of makes sense.
You're not getting rid of Patrick Mahomes that's not happening.
I mean, he's your guy forever. But you know, an
aging looking sluggish in the Super Bowl. Travis Kelsey who
has one hundred million dollar podcast, Life is good for him.
Patrick Mahomes here, I'm here, Hey, what's up?

Speaker 5 (22:27):
Cavino and Rich doing a great job and for Colin
on the Herd, and uh, I just want to know, like,
well I have any saying this and all, uh, because
it's up to me.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
He's my guy. He stays on the team.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
We want one him before and uh, I know we
got to look forward to the future, but he's the guy.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
He's part of the fabric of what we do.

Speaker 5 (22:42):
Just saying and I just want to say a great
job again, especially that Coveno guy.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
He's my guy. Cavino, way to go, nopeat mash out
All right later, guys, you knows there's other there's other
tight ends.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
You know.

Speaker 3 (22:53):
Our dude Dallas Goddard who were hanging with yesterday. He's
a free agent next year, he's saying, looked him up.
He signed like a fifty something million dollar deal, so
till next year. And if I was a mahomes you're
gonna tell me you wouldn't want a solid young stud
like Dallas Goddard, a shorthanded guy like that in a year.
Absolutely he would. And Danny when when brock Bauers tires

(23:16):
of being a Raider in a couple of years, I'm kidding,
watch your mouth. Oh that's right. I'm sorry, I'm dealing
with two Raiders fans. I'm sorry, Ryan, but yeah, they're saying.
The sentiment is if they cut Kelsey, they lose like
two mil if I'm sorry, no, if they Yeah, if
they cut him, but they also get seventeen million dollars
in cap space back and if he's at the end.

(23:39):
It might make football sense, but doesn't make sense to
the fans, to all the Swifties. And you might say
that's ridiculous, But as the owner's daughter said, hundreds of
millions of dollars you could tie back to the tailor
swift Travis Kelcey, Chief Kingdom. Yeah, whether you want to
believe that or not. Now I said, I have an

(23:59):
example that is maybe one tenth of this, but it
really is, like I think, a fail of all fails.
And I get it. You want to feel the best
team in any sport. You could say, look good, the
Lakers did for Bronni, it was you know, it's more
of a show than legitimate. He's a good young player,
but he should not be NBA ready yet. But you

(24:20):
know what sold tickets, got headlines. But my example is
not Bronnie. It's not Kelsey and Swift. I'm a New
York Mets fan. Last year the rally cry of the Mets,
Ryan hit It a Latino emerging artist known as Candalita.
He did a pit Bull remix. They had concerts at
Cydney Field. Merchandise was sold. If you watch any compilation

(24:44):
of Mets highlights from last year, you can't go through
three seconds without single fan holding up an OMG sign. Hello,
it is one Soto. I want to say, I like
Betty Betty much. If I Glacier stay on the team,
I feel like he. I like him Betty Betty much
and it mean a lot me, Juan, So if you
stay on the team, OMG, OMG jan and a great job. Kubino.

(25:06):
I love that guy and I like him be at
any pretty much, so Jose Glacias. No, but you don't
think he answered that Latin flavor that honestly between you
and meme Bro and the millions that are listening right now.
I think part of that is what pulled Soto to
your Mets. They had that Latino flair, They had a
fun vibe, They had Francisco Lindor, They had a bunch

(25:27):
of young Latin players that had a lot of fun.
They were able to grow facial there. So this this
OMG Mets rally cry has not been signed. They And
I'm not saying I'm not comparing Jose Glacius to Juan Soto.
Ju Soto was a big Canalita fan, bro Pete Alonzo Manaya.
I'm not comparing him to any of the Mets off
season signings. But when you are gonna spend seven hundred

(25:49):
and sixty five million dollars on Juan Soto and a
guy like Jose Glacias probably is like a five million
dollar utility guy, I'm not saying throwaway five mil. But
please reamp as though you're not comparing him to Travis Kelsey, No,
I'm not. I'm just I'm talking about but as far
as like he's the part of the fabric of the team,
you want to keep him around, that's what you're getting. Yeah,

(26:10):
when when when there's a when there's a guy, a
fan favorite, a rally cry, someone that means something to
the team, and especially when it's not when it's not
big spending, like Jose Glacias isn't saying I want double
digits a year. I bet your Jose Glycias would take
a one year small deal. Well don't you think Kelsey
honestly should be willing to take a pay cut for

(26:32):
you know, one more goodbye year and and one more
year of putting it out there and see if they
they could run it back and make some moves just
to get back on track again. Telling them groupman to
take a pay cut. It sounds easier when you say it,
like the reality is like, why should I take a piccut?
I'm a future. I'm just saying I think there's some
some pride that your thoughts at eight seven seven for

(26:55):
the Herd, I want to hear the player that upset
you the most your team cut ties, whether they released him,
cut them, traded him, the one that hurt the fan
base where it's like, you know, for real, you got
rid of Blank when I was a kid as a
Mets fan. I'll give you one more match because it's
what I could speak of because that's my fandom, two
of them. I mentioned it before. When Montana left the Niners,

(27:16):
I was like, really, I like Steve Young, but oh
we are And when the Mets said, yeah, you know what,
we're gonna let Gary Carter move on. The late great
Gary Carter. I know he was past his prime, but god,
it's Gary Carter like he was. The phasing, it was just,
you know, just the smile me as he's a leader

(27:37):
of the team. Yeah, there was something about Gary Carter's
departure when he went out West. It was like everybody
loved that guy. Yeah, the soap commercials. Yeah, one of
the most likable players in sports, and especially in New
York at the time because he won with the Mets. Yeah, Danny,
let me ask you. Being an LA guy when Piazza
came to us, I know he was in the at
the Marlins like a cup of coffee in between. But

(27:58):
the Piazza leaving hurt you guys, not care.

Speaker 4 (28:00):
No, it did.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (28:01):
I remember the girl I was dating at the time
had like tears welling up in her eyes. Damn when
she found out. You gotta remember there was a mural
of him on the outside of Dodger Stadium.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Now, the truth is Dan ripped. Danny ripped one. He
was he had a mean brito that night and she
was tearing up. Yeah, it had nothing to do with Piazza.

Speaker 4 (28:20):
Did not let gas in front of girlfriends.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
No, Danny. I remember you telling me once when Marcus
Allen moved on to the Chiefs, you were very appearable
me and I cried. I was like boo.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
I was very upset because you don't want First of all,
you don't want to see your childhood hero like Marcus
Allen moved to a different team. But then let alone
it being the Chiefs, right, I go anywhere but Kansas City,
please if you are a Raider. And then more recently,
when John Gruden returned to Oakland and Mark Davis got
his dream to get his coach back, what's the first

(28:51):
big move? He traded Khalil Mack And there were Oakland
Raider fans at the time who quit. They wrote memos
about how they're vandam was done. They can't believe this.
Khalil Mack was the guy we all were rocking his
jersey there at the coliseum and that that was a
big one. They're still Raider fans who have not gotten
over that.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
What hurts the most. It usually hurts the most when
you were a little kid, because that's your first realization
of like what, Wow, my favorite guy is gone. How
did they do? Like as a kid, it's like baffling,
like you you're almost your heart he's hurting what why
would they do that?

Speaker 6 (29:27):
You know?

Speaker 3 (29:28):
For my brother? For my brother that was Mookie Wilson
when he got traded to the Blue Jays. Everyone has
their example of our buddy Bo back at Fox lart Lesson. Yeah,
Bo said he was in fifth grade when that Piazza
trade happened, and he remembers crying on the way to school.
Exactly what I was getting, man, Thank you, Bo Bo
chiming in. That's a great example because as a kid,
you're like, wait, they could do that. I got one

(29:51):
dumb question to go along with all our feedback because
I want I want to get to your phone calls
the player that left your team that hurt you as
a kid when you like maybe a cry it on
the way to school. I like that one because again
there's rumor and speculation that the Chiefs could save a
lot of money by getting rid of Travis Kelcey. But
I have what other dumb question for you guys. My

(30:12):
wife and I have a relatively new car, and because
I'm coaching multiple kid sports, now that new car smell
now smells like Musky Catchers equipment Musky or musty both.
Do you, as a parent that coaches, because I guarantee
we're talking to a lot of dads and moms a coach,

(30:33):
do you keep the equipment in the suv? Or do
you load it and unload it every time? Because I
don't feel like taking that crap in and out every time?
But does that mean my brand new car now smells
like crappy equipment? Is that the dad life letter? I
think this is part of the dad life. I think
this is great problems to have. I think it just
goes to the territory of being a coach in little

(30:56):
league or softball or whatever it is you're doing. Yeah, no,
he wants to do with that hassle, I know. Or
you could just buy like a little tree air freshener,
call it a dan. Thanks for solving my problem in
thirty seconds. Yeah, your feedback. The player that hurt your
feelings the most will get to that next in for

In for our bro Colley Cowherd right here on the hurd.

(33:33):
He makes a great point too, you can't solve ignorant,
so we lean into it. The world wide thinks of nonsense.
Collin's big point about Aaron Rodgers making sense in LA
I'm gonna back him up on that, and I'll tell
you why. But first, let me remind you that we're
gonna be playing a game where we need contestants. Yes,

(33:54):
it's called quote me. It's one of our newest games.
Every day we play a game right giveaway prizes, basically
bribing listeners. That's what we do. Hey, we want you
to like our show, and if you don't, at least
you like the fact that you get some free swag.
Right CNR on FSR, we got Swiggy's stainless steel water bottles.
They're really nice. No cheap bows, no weak ass giveaways.

(34:15):
We actually got quality giveaways for you. So if you
want to play again, quote me. It's multiple choice, it's easy,
and hopefully you'll win eight seven seven to nine eight
seven seven four of the Herd. Ah yes, eight seven
seven four the Herd Collins number. And it has to
do with all the you know, all the crazy takes
in the world of sports. Who said it. We'll get
to that again, eight seven seven for the Herd if

(34:37):
you want in, if you want to win a prize,
and later this hour weekend hobnobbing what you need to
watch in all of the sports and entertainment. We do
it every Friday. I'm so pumped for this weekend. So
we're gonna get you ready for the weekend like we
always do. Again Covino and Rich. Danny G just whispered
in my ear, say it numerically, eight seven seven four.
Do you think I know what the Herd numbers are?

(34:59):
Danny G? You just like you ever see that meme
of the guy who's looking up and it's just a
bunch of calculations.

Speaker 4 (35:04):
Oh well, it's the first thing listed there eight seven
seven four eight four thirty four thirty seven. One More
Time eight seven seven four eight four thirty four thirty seven.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Daddy, that was That was a pop quiz. I was
gonna fail.

Speaker 4 (35:19):
On me, shre.

Speaker 3 (35:20):
If you want to play, that's the number and you
can win a.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
Press the equivalent to you being a huge hockey fan.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Dude, Yeah huge, Now ye know, one night, I'm all in.
So what Colin said in that promo and you know
we've touched on Aaron Rodgers. Do the Rams make a
lot of sense based on if they move on from
Matthew Stafford. You know they're moving on from Cooper Cup,
but they still have Pookin the kupa Karen Williams they
got they got there looking for a one year guy,

(35:46):
two year guy. Then it makes absolute sense. There's other
guys looking for a home. DeVante Adams, who knows where
demo ends up. So it's not like the Rams are
calling her today. They were one play away, as Matthew
Stafford's wife pointed out, Yeah, they were one play away
for me and work Cup like you said, But Pooka's
a that's his chance to pick up some great leadership

(36:06):
and really step up as a player. But I wanted
to give another layer to it. When we talked about
what Aaron Rodgers was looking for, and he said a
to be wanted, which, as we pointed out, it's a
no brainer. But in a relationship at a job anywhere,
you don't want to feel like someone's doing you a
charity work. You want to genuinely feel like the woman
you're with desires you. The job you're at, values your work.

(36:30):
You know your family members appreciate what you give back
to the family like no one wants to be taken
for granted. So I like that. I like how he
wants to be surrounded by winners, because who wants to
be Who wants to end their career with a bunch
of hell No one. But the third point was an
interesting one. And I wouldn't mind the warm weather. This
this hit. That's like the fat ass. I want somebody

(36:52):
fat ass. You know, if you could throw in a
you know, a nice booty down with that, that's the
nice booty. However, the last couple of days we were
in Philadelphia doing that event with the Eagles and Dallas
Goddard and now we're in New Jersey and I'm looking
out Covino's family's houses window right now, there's like snow
on the ground. And Aaron Rodgers and I we're around

(37:13):
the same age. You hit forty. I don't care what
you say. I get when people say I like the seasons.
Of course, you like a little fall, changing of the leaves.
You like Oh spring, Oh, baseball's here. Oh. Make it
clear we live in La now or here visiting. I
barely miss my family, let alone the seasons. I miss
pizza more than I miss the season. Well, listen, I

(37:34):
always tell people when you know, because it's a common question.
Ranch you live in LA, you're from New York, what
do you miss?

Speaker 4 (37:39):
Dude?

Speaker 3 (37:40):
And I say, listen, I'll be honest. I missed my
family and food. New York has better food. And I
missed the vibe of the people. East Coast people. I
like their honesty, I like their how they act. You
and Rodgers may be around the same age, but you're
not in the same income bracket. No, that's true. So
whatever hassles and hops he has to deal with when
it comes to cold weather and snow, you think he's

(38:00):
out there shoveling it. No, no, I'm not saying that.
I'm just saying in general. When I stepped off that
plane in Philadelphia, yeah, oh you felt it in your bones.
I was like, damn. I was like, why is it
gonna be so cold? Like it really does suck. And
it made me realize, like, I'm not saying I'm a
senior citizen in New York that retires to Hey, I'm
gonna move to Florida to retire and die, which is

(38:21):
what all New Yorkers do. Oh you go to Florida, Oh,
to retire for twenty years and then die. That's what
most East Coasters do. That should be their state slogan,
Florida where New Yorkers go to die. I thought it
was I'm not saying I'm a sixty seven year old guy,
but even when you hit like forty, I've noticed that
when I go back to the East Coast, call me soft,

(38:41):
call me a wimp, but I got to your face
because behind your back all the time, it's to my face. Okay,
I got no time for cold weather. It really does stink.
So I could understand where a veteran athlete would say,
you know, playing in a nice place when it hurt either,
because when I'm driving my kids school in the morning
and it's seventy degrees in southern California. I get the

(39:03):
view of the mountains, and I don't I put on
a hoodie palm trees. Yo, I had to put a
I when you have to scrape your windows and start
your car before you bring your kids to school and
you're scraping your wind, she'd like damn to me. I
could understand that last element for Aaron Rodgers makes total sense. Absolutely.
I think Colin hit it on the head. Totally agree

(39:24):
with him. Last time we talked about this, the rams
didn't seem to be an option, or they weren't definitely
an option. I think that's the solid move for him,
especially if they need a one year guy. All right,
So again, Covino and Rich do you agree disagree? Give
us a call eight seven seven for the herd. But
we are looking for people to play our game. Quote me, easy,

(39:47):
multiple choice, easy breezy again. If you want to play,
let us know. I'm ready to play. Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (39:54):
Sports media and athletes are quoted a lot for me.

Speaker 3 (39:58):
Stars tracked other shocks.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Here comes the hot take quote.

Speaker 4 (40:01):
Andy Wee should step down his head coach.

Speaker 3 (40:03):
This is not a one game.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
We asked him. He called a los in this game.
You guess the talking head. You can quote me on that.

Speaker 4 (40:10):
Quote me? All right, here we go. What U g
in this game? You need to tell me who in
the sports world said it. Let's meet our contestants in
New Jersey sharing a twin size mattress with his radio
partner Steve Covino yo literally literally to his left with

(40:30):
BedHead from earlier today, Rich Davis.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
Well, it's up, daddy. And for the record, you know,
for people, Covino and I are not together, though there
is speculation of this. No, we're the Burton Ernie of radio. Yeah,
we sleep in the same room. I'm married with two children. Everybody,
at least.

Speaker 4 (40:45):
We want you to believe, all right, and looking to
win a seeing our stainless steel Swiggy on the studio lines.
Let's go to Shorewood, Illinois.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
Denise, Hey, Denise, Hello, how are you guys? We're good?
You ready to play?

Speaker 2 (40:59):
I'm ready to play.

Speaker 3 (41:00):
Height.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
I love listening to yourself.

Speaker 4 (41:01):
Ah, thanks you much. All right, here are the rules
for quote me. The first contestant with two correct answers
is the champ. If there's a tie. I have two
overtime quotes ready to go. Your name is your buzzer.
But you do have to wait until all three possible
answers are read. If there's two wrong answers in a row,
we move on to the next quote. Are you ready?

Speaker 3 (41:18):
Yeah, let's go.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
All right, guys, here's the first quote. As far as
Soto saying he has a better chance to win with
the Mets, you know that's his opinion. He could say
what he wants. I definitely disagree with him, but I
wasn't too surprised by it. You know, he got a
good deal. He's going to be in a great spot.
It's gonna be great having him in town. We're gonna
be battling back and forth for quite a few years.

(41:41):
Quote me, who me a hal Steinbrenner, b Aaron Judge
or C. Garrett Coleno Coveno Go in there first.

Speaker 3 (41:51):
Quick, I'm a Yankees guy. That's Aaron Judge. Yes, that
is Aaron Judge. Oh, who is already rocking a beard? Yeah,
he's currently growing stubble as we speak.

Speaker 7 (42:01):
Yeah, and let's hear how that sounded. You know that's
his opinion. He can he can say what he wants.
I definitely disagree with him, but I wasn't. I wasn't
too surprised by it. You know, he got a good deal.
He's he's gonna be in a great spot. It's gonna
be great having him in town. We're gonna be battling
back and forth for for quite all right.

Speaker 4 (42:17):
Covino on the board.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
Sounds like.

Speaker 6 (42:23):
Play the beginning of that one more time. He's like you,
that's what you's his opinion? He can he can say
what he wants. I definitely disagree with him, but I wasn't.
I wasn't too surprised by it. You know, I got
a good deal. He's he's gonna be in a great spot.
It's gonna be great having him in town. We're gonna
be battling back and forth for quite.

Speaker 4 (42:42):
Right. Steven Coveno on the board first, as we go
to a round two, and this quote is on the
NBA being boring with no personality. Do you know why
we like Anthony aunt Man so much because it's the
first time we get a pulse of somebody having a
freaking personality? Quote me oo, me, is it a Kelvin Washington,

(43:04):
b LeVar Errington or c Chris Grussard, Denise, Denise.

Speaker 3 (43:12):
I'm gonna say, b yes, LaVar Arrington.

Speaker 4 (43:17):
Denise jumps on the board and here's what that sounded like.

Speaker 3 (43:22):
You know why we like Anthony aunt Man so much
because it's the first time we get a pulse of
somebody having a freaking personality. Damn, I have another LeVar quote.
Are you ready?

Speaker 4 (43:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (43:36):
I like to sit in hotel lobbies and pick my feet. Yeah.
Did he say that with shoes on or shoes off?
I love? Yeah. We were at the super Bowl, Denise
and LeVar who I love two pros and a cup
of gel. Every time I went in the lobby. That
guy was laughing with people, had a cocktail, and he
had no shoes on. I think maybe he lost the

(43:56):
super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (43:57):
It's a look all right so far, Covino and Denise
both on the board as we go to round three.
This quote is about Luca's performance Wednesday night. Okay, he's
really sad. He I think, for the first time in
his entire basketball life, had his confidence shaken by being
traded and by what they said about him. And I
think he is deeply in his own head. Quote me,

(44:19):
who me? Is that a Nick Wright, b Brian Windhorst
or c Rob Parker, Oh Rich Rich?

Speaker 3 (44:31):
I think it was who was again?

Speaker 4 (44:33):
Nick right?

Speaker 3 (44:34):
It was Nick? I think it was Nick right?

Speaker 4 (44:35):
It was Nick?

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Yeah, Okay, yeah, no, no, no, I saw that on Instagram.
I think that clip. So that's so, I was like, wait,
who did I see? All right, it was a a vampire?
Nick writ it was Nick Red.

Speaker 4 (44:46):
Okay, let's hear how that sounded.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
He's really sad.

Speaker 1 (44:49):
He is.

Speaker 8 (44:50):
I think for the first time in his entire basketball life,
had his confidence shaken by being traded and then what
they said about him, and I think he is deeply
in his own head.

Speaker 4 (45:04):
All right, So three way tie here a heated game
between Covino, Denise and Rick.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
Do you want to comment on that quote? Ye? Yeah.
When you are built of the competitive nature that Luca
is built from, and you've been playing competing against professionals
when he was fifteen sixteen years old, this kid was
thrown out to the Wolves when he was a little boy. Yeah,
may have stung him a little bit, But if you

(45:29):
don't think that motivates him, you're out of your mind. Yeah.
I think it's more motivational. I think Danny is he's not.
He's not sitting here like, whoa, my feelings are hurt, Danny.
He's like, yo, I'm gonna show them because I'm a competitor.
I promise you. Once playoff time comes, Danny, you you're
a lucky Lakers fan, because I think you're gonna see
a passionate Luca and Lebron realizing he has very few,
you know, chances left. I think the Lakers are gonna

(45:51):
be fire playoff time. I mean, especially like these foreign players.
You think they're bothered by that it upset them a
little bit. I'm sure, what do you care? You're gonna be?

Speaker 4 (45:59):
Why? Hockey? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (46:01):
You know what, that's a great point.

Speaker 4 (46:02):
Yeah, a bit of an overreaction. I think what Luca's
more frustrated about is that nagging injury. Yeah, all right,
so we'll go to a tie breaker here, hopefully around four.
And I'm gonna read the quote here. This is this
is a it's self explanatory. Here we go. It's about
Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (46:18):
Though.

Speaker 4 (46:18):
How far has your career fallen that you are begging
the Jets to stay? Not the Cowboys, not the Steelers,
not the forty nine Ers, not the Chiefs, not the Eagles.
You're begging the Jets to stay, and they said, no,
Quote me, who me? Was that A Jonas Knox, B
Jason Smith or C. Doug Gottlieb HENI Denise for the win?

(46:42):
I let's say Doug Gattlieb. No, oh, Rich Rich for
the steal and the wind?

Speaker 3 (46:48):
I it was Jonas.

Speaker 2 (46:52):
No, you both losers, damn it.

Speaker 4 (46:55):
It's all right. That means it's still a tie as
we go to overtime.

Speaker 3 (46:59):
All right, man, this is as exciting as the hockey game.

Speaker 4 (47:04):
All right, here we go. It's very hard to write
their their o bit as an obituary. It's very hard
to write their o bit, very hard. The Chiefs were
in good health and then their ticker went, quote me,
who me was at A shady McCoy, B Colin Cowherd
or C. Joy Taylor Denise for the wind?

Speaker 3 (47:28):
I have to jump in.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
I hope it was callin and indeed was Colin Cowd.

Speaker 4 (47:35):
Yeah, Denise wins a shiny CNR swiggy. Congratulations.

Speaker 3 (47:41):
Oh I am so excited. You have no idea. This
is great. We're excited for you.

Speaker 4 (47:46):
Great.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
Thank you for playing, Denise, Thanks for checking us out.
And I know you listen to Colin. Hey, check us
out in the afternoon if you can, or download the
Potter right.

Speaker 4 (47:54):
Yeah, and hang on the line there for us. I'll
mail out that swiggy to you.

Speaker 3 (47:58):
Hold on, you got it. Rich, You guys are the great.
