By the way, Friday, Friday Fridays, it's.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Earthly for that. I've been ready since first call? Roll
what movie?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
I mean?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I know?
Speaker 4 (00:51):
You know? Do you know kind to say it?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Say Peewee's Big Adventure. That was Wayne Arnold who said that?
Did you play Anne? Yeah, Jason Hervey's major line. So
flashing it back already on a Friday, Pumped for the weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Covino and Rich.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
We're on Monday through Friday, five to seven on the East,
two to four on the West. Just search Covino and
Rich wherever you get your podcasts. And we have our
bonus show on Fox Sports Radios YouTube page over promised
new episode dropped yesterday, but always a pleasure to be here. Now,
every Friday on our show, we do something called weekend Hobnobin,
So we'll do that before the end of the day.
(01:34):
That's everything you need to watch in the world of
sports and entertainment, so you know what's going on come
Monday when everyone's hobnobin at work, all right, So we'll.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Keep you posted on that.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Plus we do something called Chipotle worker or WNBA player
and we give away prizes. Yeah, is the woman a
WNBA player or Chipotle worker? If everyone claims to know
the WNBA so well, this should be easy. It's hard
too familiarize are ourself with WNBA. But at the same time,
(02:05):
give props to Chipotle workers because they do a hell
of a job.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
And who doesn't love a burrito ball.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Yeah, we gotta get your hype for a naked gun
weekend and the first of the month. And by the way, uh,
there's a big story and a lot of chatter about
actually quite the opposite cam Ward. Maybe not a lot
of chatter and is that a good thing? So we're
gonna get to a lot of NFL today, But before
we get into what won the day yesterday?
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Why do they hide the straws at Starbucks? Is that?
Is that just out here in Los Angeles as the turtles.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah, they don't want people just taking them and dumping
them into the ocean. I hate the whole I feel
like such an ass every time you guys go to
a straw, I just put them out.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
No, yeah, they hide them behind the count.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Do you think if they put them out then like
people are gonna like abuse the straws. It's true, a
lot of people wondering why you would even want a
straw with your coffee.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
It's a nice coffee.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
What am I gonna everybody SIPs out of a little
uh worthy straw, a little silly straw like you do.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
It's not very it's not very manly. Rich also uses
a straw for his alcohol at a bar.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Yeah, so they do.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
They do keep them behind the counter, I think, honestly,
just to conserve them and just so people don't waste them.
For people like you who go to Chipotle, speaking of
Chipotle and steal all the forks and knives all the
time because you think we have the right. They have
good civil right. And one of their Tourta bowls. When
two burrito bowls are forty dollars, then I'm stealing forks.
That doesn't mean you should take three handfuls. So people
(03:29):
probably take a ridiculous amount of straw, So just hand
them out if and when you need them. So anyway,
I'm Steve Cavino. If you know the answer to that,
let us know. The number is eight seven seven for
the Herd eight seven seven for the herd us eight
seven seven four eight four thirty four thirty seven. We
love taking phone calls, so let's get involved to stay interactive.
(03:49):
And that's Rich Davis who posed the question, and Rich, yes,
Before we talk about who won last night, I just
want to say, I hope you had.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Well, not an astros sort of. I screw that.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Hope you had a trade lance sort tonight doesn't even matter. No,
it does because you were dumping on him yesterday. Hope
you had a trade If we're gonna talk about how
he's such a bust when he goes thirteen for twenty
one hundred and twenty yards two tuddies and they went
thirty four to seven, Hope you had a trade lance
sort tonight. It might be really two. It might be
(04:21):
the only time I say it all year. You know
what fair point? So give him promp, props to trade lance,
and props to the people that hide straws. I honestly,
I just is it feminine not masculine to sip out
of a straw?
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Who knows?
Speaker 3 (04:35):
But know what I want to talk about to start
the show today in for the herd c and our
how baseball is popping. Baseball is doing everything it should
be doing. They're marketing their stars better. They got young
kids interested again. There are a lot of young stars.
That also helps. There's a lot of big familiar names
(04:56):
Baseball's doing. To quote Charlie Sheen in the two thousands.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Winn winning.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Baseball should be winning on August first, today we flipped
the calendar and we should be talking about Pennant races.
We should be talking about how great baseball is right now.
You know, over the last five to ten years, I
get it, football still came. I love football, but we
were a little obsessed with football to the point where
it was August and we were talking about preseason antics
(05:24):
and all this one we really should be talking about baseball,
and that was baseball's fail.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Now that baseball's back. It's very clear that this should
be baseball time.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
There's so many reasons as to why, and we've been
speculating that for a long time.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
But they made all the right adjustments.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, we always talked football because baseball was moving slow
as the world was changing and moving faster and you're
scrolling on TikTok and you're so easily disinterested. Baseball was boring.
But they made the right changes. They made the game quicker.
That really did help. The fact that we had more
than one superstar in Shoheo Tani and Aaron Judge and
(06:03):
Tatis and Harper and like goes on and on and on.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Now, can I tell you the fact that.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
The fact that we had the major market teams in
the playoffs last year and it was exciting as hell.
You heard it in our voices last year, the Mets,
the Yankees, the Dodgers, like it made it that much
more fun and it's set up for a really exciting
season this year. Well, major markets part of it, but
it also proves that if you're a small market and
(06:32):
play your cards right, you could win.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
The Brewers have the best record in baseball.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, when you got the Dodgers and the Yankees battling
in the World Series. When you got some other cool
teams in the mix in the playoffs and it seems
like there's a lot of teams still in it to
win it, it makes things exciting. That's why we saw
a lot of big moves. Even our guy Tim Kirkchean,
who's been reporting on baseball for one hundred and fifty years,
said yesterday's trade deadline may have been the craziest, most
(07:00):
exciting he's ever been a part.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
Of in his career.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
And then did he say, I'm Tim Kirchean, I'm Kuran ESPN.
So yeah, everybody knows it. We were all on the
edge of our seat, even on this show yesterday. Oh
my god, Well, who's gonna get who? What moves are
gonna be made? Are your teams gonna win this deadline?
And it was exciting, man. And there wasn't really that
many giant names but like that were traded, but some important,
(07:28):
impactful moves were made. Yeah, the moves for the teams
that needed to make moves, We're gonna see if they
make sense. We're gonna go over some of them. But
are you saying baseball won yesterday, baseball won the day.
Baseball is popping. They out shine to me your first
preseason game. Look at it this way. There's Terry McLaurin news,
(07:49):
there's you know, Micah Parsons's cowboy activity going on.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
This story is in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
But to me, the baseball trade deadline and the excitement
with about what fifty sixty games to go? Hey, speaking
of Tim Kirkshon and ESPN, that's a bad time for
them to lose their deal with the MLB.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
What if that's official? Is that not official anymore?
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Well, it is popping again, and you gotta invest now
by now because baseball's back.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
It's back in a big way. And Rich is absolutely right.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
If you go back a few years, we'd be talking
football right now, without a doubt because people would be
tired and board of baseball. In fact, in radio, pull
you behind the velvet rope. When you lead with baseball
and you talk baseball, you lose most of the audience
because it's sort of a boring old guy conversation. Not
any more, Moore, And that's what we lead with today.
(08:42):
Baseball is back. Baseball's winning. Baseball one yesterday, It's August first,
and we're talking baseball. We're not ready and eager to
turn the page. Are we excited about football? Of course?
But are we still hanging on to see where this
season goes? Absolutely more than ever, more than we have
in the past ten plus years.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
I said it yesterday.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
September and October are going to be overstimulating. If you're
a baseball fan and now you know on the heels
of football coming back, you may very well be completely overstimulated.
With football starting, Pennant races playoff baseball the early part
of the NFL season, the next few months are going
(09:22):
to be pretty sweet. No what I want to say
that contributes to baseball popping and coming back. I think
baseball cards are something to do with it, believe it
or not, because these kids are.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Going wild about it.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
So let's talk about all the little things adding up,
because sometimes it could be a relationship, it could be
a job, it could be something we're like, what do
you love about it?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
It's like there's not one big thing.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Like all facts yesterday with the trade deadline, there wasn't
one big star other than Suarez to the Mariners. There
wasn't really like a top tier guy in my opinion
to the Astroea. You might say a couple of the
closers Johann uh durand to the Phillies. But I'm saying
(10:03):
it wasn't like a year where like Piazza was on
the move or Soda was on the move, or you know,
like it wasn't one of those.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
No.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
I think we could add up all the little things
and say all the little things together baseball cards.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
That's really good in Covino.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
I really think embracing the celebrating instead of being all
type butt about it. Like when the Dodgers get a
double and they do their silly little dance on seca
base if he hit flesh. Yeah, Or when my Mets
get a hit they do that little rolling of the
arms hand up, or all these teams when they score
home run, they wear a funny helmet in the dugout,
they take a selfie, they do their little celebrations. To me,
(10:41):
I got another one that is also a contributing factor
about the Hey, I know it's baseball and only eighty
year old guys really love us and talk about us.
But we're gonna do something called city connect Jerseys, and
you know, maybe that'll help bring some excitement people want
want to represent a little bit. I think that's great,
without a doubt. It's moving so fast. The Yankees changed
(11:02):
their beard policy, their facial hair policy, so jerseys, these
little things mattered. Merch baseball cards, celebrations stood out to
the Weieniels.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Can I tell you something I saw?
Speaker 3 (11:15):
And Colin loves to point out Baseball's poppins are on
the same page with the guy we're filing in for,
the legendary Colin Cowherd. I can't help but say, when
you go to a game now, I'm not a I'm
not a bird brain. Well maybe a little, but I
don't need to be completely entertained.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
But when I tell you.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
The entrances for the closers, the walk up music, all
the in stadium stuff is evatress at another level, like
when Edwin Diaz comes in for the Mets and Timmy
Trumpets is blaring. City Field now has a light show.
When Duran who just got tried to tell you know,
maybe you gotta thank the Savannah Bananas for that. I mean,
maybe they've stepped up the entertainment factor so much. And
(11:59):
I'm sure base all said, hey, why are we shying away?
From family fun. But you remember, like a year ago,
who remember a year ago? The guy that's now a
Philly Johann Durant. We talked about how his entrance for
the Minnesota Twins was unbelievable. Like the stadium shuts down
and those the lights go crazy. Those type of things
(12:21):
are are right on the right track. So I think
we nailed it here. Baseball's back and each team has stars.
Speaker 5 (12:29):
Again and big events like tomorrow Bristol Motor Speedway.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
Dude, that's going to be sick.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Did you see the overhead of what it looks like
when you fit a baseball stadium on a racetrack?
Speaker 4 (12:41):
It looks insane.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
It's the first ever game in the state, so that's
extra excitement for all the kids out there.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
And the Field of Dreams game, the Field of Dreams game.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
They do the international play once in a while now,
so uh, international stars. But you know what rich I
mentioned in passing Savannah Bananas, I do believe that opened
the door to Hey, baseball's fun and exciting for little
kids and families, and that could be a stepping stone
to watching the big leaguers do their thing. And in
(13:16):
related news, I don't know if you saw this yesterday,
but sources say the Yankees traded Anthony Volpi to the
Savannah Bananas in exchange for ten foot nine pitcher and
dh Dakota Stilts albatron. Yes, it's a good one Vegas.
They got rid of Volpi, we got the guy on
the stilts. I know it's gonna be It's gonna be
a big time for you. You can't wait to see this, man.
(13:36):
I wasn't sure if it was official, but I saw
the meme, so it has to be real.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Cove.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
I don't want to discount the Savannah Bananas. Some love it,
some roll their eyes at it, but I'm not saying
it changed baseball.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
But you know what, you.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Don't think it's a nice gateway for a little kid
if you don't think in stadium production crews, and there
was there's been marketing and PR boardroom meetings where it's like, hey, listen,
welcome the Savannah Banonders are doing. We need to incorporate
some of that stadiums. You now they have the sausage rate.
We need Fron Johnson front. You know how they have
a sausage race in Milliawauke. Yeah, every stadium is now
(14:15):
sort of doing their own version of stuff like that.
I know they got the Presidents one in DC for
the Nationals, but every stadium now has some type of race.
It's no longer just the fifth inning. Guess which had
the balls under on the score board? Great City Subway race,
by the way, I got one. I know you didn't
think of What Rich is doing is compiling a list
(14:35):
to figure out why and how we've come so far
with baseball and since a short period of time. Just
two years ago, we would be talking about NFL, no doubt,
no diggity. But you gotta ask yourself. You and I
are big baseball fans. We grew up playing and loving baseball,
and then as we got older, football became king and
baseball was more of a I wouldn't say niche sport,
(14:56):
but more of something. We're like, yeah, I love baseball,
but now baseball is popping our power, and I'm even
more intrigued being that I coach faster paced. I coach
baseball now, and these kids are interested interested. And again
I give baseball cards a lot of credit because they
came back with all these special cards and all these
(15:17):
cool unboxings you see on social media.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
You can thank COVID for that. Yeah. Maybe. But here's
one I know Rich isn't going to bring up, but.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
That is when paractors. That is when a lot of
card collectors came back.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Oh you know what, man, there's so many great cards
and I'm a big fan. You remember how exciting that
was just to get a great card when you were
a kid. Imagine how they feel now with all the
options the food. Baseball parks have stepped up the food
next level to the point where it's ridiculous. And every
year they're releasing new menu items at the ballpark. When
(15:49):
you're spending that much money to go, you want to
have a good time. I think that also added to
the fund, don't we find ourselves talking about all The
only generic food I ever have at a ballpark is
a Dodger dog because you feel like you have to.
But other than that, if I go to a stadium,
you got so many fun options.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Dude.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
We just came back from Atlanta. They have barbecue restaurants
within the stadium. They have Chick fil A's in the stadium.
Stadiums there are personalized to that city. Yeah, there's so
many great fun and goofy options. It adds to the fun.
You know, baseball lost its way. It became old and boring.
It's a game. It's supposed to be fun and exciting,
and they're leaning more toward that. And you know, boss
(16:30):
Man hit us up and he said, do you guys
you named all that and you didn't even mention pitchclock,
pace of play, length of game. You know, bat flips,
tenth inning, guy starts on second base, and extra innings.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
They are moving the game along.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Like I like it and hate it all at the
same time, because when your team has someone at second
base automatically in extra innings, you're like, yes, and but
what is the other team like?
Speaker 4 (16:56):
No, I hate that.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
And while we do love the added uh well we well,
we do love the human element of sports. I'm telling
you the next big one is going to be those,
as Danny said yesterday, the two ball strike challenges, and
then and then if you get them right, you get
the third one. Because I think even some of these
(17:17):
umpire fights and the staredowns and all that, that's good.
And the feuds, Danny, your Dodgers and Padres hate each other,
that that helps Mets phillies. You know what I think
helps too, though. I think again, having the Yankees, Dodgers,
mess those teams in it, yet still having big market
teams competing.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Like Rich said, that helps.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
But I think it helps that even though your Dodgers
won Danny g last year.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
They're not a hateable team. Show Hey, Mookie, Bets Freeman.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
They these guys make that ridiculous team that you have
of All Stars not hateable. So it gets people tuned in.
You want to beat the Dodgers, but you don't hate
the superstars.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
So many superstars that you could root.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
For that aren't even on your team that are likable,
and Show Hayes one of them. Well, I think that helps.
I want to uh, I want to point out that
right now, let's let's let's do the math. I'm a
mathematician here, guys. We just came back from Atlanta, even
that derby. We were at the All Star Game, everything
about it, the way it ended in dramatic fashion. Swing off, yeah,
(18:22):
you know, the swing off was ridiculous. The bombs, these
monster circus shots. These guys are hitting the exit velocity.
When you see guys like O'Neil Cruz just teeing off,
You're like, my god, you know, kids love that man.
So it's it's back in a big way, guys. And
the proof is today. That's why we bring it up.
(18:44):
Yesterday with the trade deadline and a lot of moves
were made. We'll speculate on that, but without a doubt,
we'd normally be talking about the Chargers Lions game yesterday.
Because you're so quick to right. You're so right that, Danny.
We've been here at Fox Sports Radio four or five
years now, almost right about that. Wee feels like ten
(19:05):
working would be over. Yeah, we've been doing our show
together for like decades now, I promise you, what is
it twenty twenty five? Since twenty ten, I'd say every
year until now. If you told me the preseason kicked
off in the NFL and there were some you know,
stories about stars like McLaurin and Michaeh. Parsons and Aaron
(19:26):
Rodgers and we were leading with baseball. This is the
only year baseball's that back in a big way. And
right now, this fifty ish games left in baseball fifty
ish most teams have about fifty three fifty four games
left on the schedule. So with fifty four games left
(19:47):
right now, the Mets and the Phillies are within a
half a game of each other. The Brewers have a
one game lead on the Cubs. The Padres only trail
the Dodgers by three. And they just say added Mason
Miller in the National League. You're looking at that, that's insane.
You go to the American League. If you think the
(20:08):
Yankees are gonna roll over, I hate to say, because
Camino's a Yanks guy. Oh you beefed up their bullpener.
If you think they're gonna roll over, and just give
this division to the Blue Jays. They're three and a
half games only and Jean Carlos Stanton's back.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
Bro the only the only division which is bunk.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
I apologize Twins fans because she sort of just sold
everything as you just you had a yard sale. That's
the only division where the Tigers got it. And then
the West. You don't think the Mariners four games that
made the biggest offensive moves.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
So yeah, there's.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
People that say over the last fifty games they think
the Mariners might be the best team. Well that's the
other reason too. You got other fans holding on longer
than they've had uh in previous years. Way more teams
have a chance deeper into the season now at the
extra wild card and everything else. So yeah, these are
all the reasons. I mean, we went from the fun
(21:02):
excitement to baseball cards to the food at the stadium
speeding up the game.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
That's that's obvious. Man.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
That definitely helped. People were against it, but they made
the move. We reaped the benefits, and now we're talking
about it. Dude, the next fifty games, it's gonna be electric.
And by the way, if you're not a fan of
our show Monday through Friday, what's wrong with you?
Speaker 4 (21:24):
You should be.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
But Rich and I have a bet of who has
has the best record, the Yankees or the Mets, and
it's a thousand dollars bet, which isn't going to make
or break anybody, but you think I want to lose
one thousand dollars to this guy. Until the Mets got cold,
I was loving the bet more because the Mets are
two games better than the Yanks out last week when
(21:44):
it was like five game but we raised the States
one hundred dollars for every extra game that they won
by so you know, every day on there glued. And
that's another thing too, Rich, I think people putting action
on games. That also helps, you know, with so many
factors as to why baseball is just way more exciting
(22:05):
in the past few years. And we the proof is today.
And this is no ad, but for real, I've been doing.
We would do the reads for the DraftKings pick six.
Every so often I'll throw ten bucks on, like, oh,
a Mookie home run with a you know, a Wan
Soto more than one and a half bases, and oh,
Mike Trout with a double like I'll do those, you know,
quick little bets. And I think there's so many layers
(22:27):
as to why baseball's back, and I think we just
named like ten of them.
Speaker 5 (22:30):
I should point out that our afternoon Drive show is
eighty percent NFL, so for you guys to lead with baseball,
it does point out that that baseball is thriving right now.
But the real test is going to be when there
are some real NFL games to compete with. Because Rich,
it's easy for you to brush over that Hall of
(22:50):
Fame game last night. Yeah, I'm guessing you didn't watch
much of it. No, I watched, I watched a half.
How much did you watch?
Speaker 3 (22:56):
I watched like zero PoID zero, like background, I watched,
I watched highlights and I was like, I looked at
Trey Lanson's box score and that's it.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
But you know what, You're right, Danny.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
If it was Thursday night kickoff, that is by far
what we're all watching it. Just it might be more
of a reflection that baseball was struggling so much that
a preseason football game over the last decade got our
interest more.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
But not right now. I think everything really.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Started to shift when the postseason started to pop last year.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
It's the wild Cards.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Man, My postseason was so electric last year, so many
big moments. That's when it all started to come to
fruition and come together. Of course, all the little changes
were in place, but that playoff series, that postseason last
year really set us up for all this excitement this year.
That Padres Dodger's first round, the Mets making their ridiculous run,
(23:49):
that Alonzo home run in the ninth inning, moments so
doing the little stare for the Yankees, then hitting a
home run, like everything about the postseason was fantastic and
just to tie a little bow on it. If you
look at the standings right now, teams like the Angels,
who are slightly under five hundred are only four games
(24:11):
out of the wildcard. Well in the National League because
they got Oswaldo Pirazza ready to tear it up, dude.
In the National League, teams like the Marlins and Giants,
who again are slightly under five hundred, are only six
games out of the wildcard, so everyone's sort of in it.
Baseball's popping the mother FNNS.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
Alright, I love baseball. Well stands out to you.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
Let us know, and of course we'll talk some football
and our prizes to give away Chipotle worker or WNBA
player A seven to seven for the Herd.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
We got more Cavino and Rich next.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern. But here's the thing, we
never have enough time to get to everything we want
to get to, and that's why we have a brand
new podcast called over Promised. You see, we're having so
much fun in our two hour show. We never get
to everything, honestly, because this guy is over promising things
(25:13):
we never have time for.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
Yeah, you blubber list lame in me.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years. Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show,
and we want you to be a part of it.
We're gonna be talking sports, of course, but we're also
gonna talk life and relationships. And if Rich and I
are arguing about something or we didn't have enough time,
it will continue on our after show called over Promised. Well,
if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make sure
(25:36):
you check out over Promised and also uncensored, by the way,
so maybe we'll go at it even.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
A little harder.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
It's gonna be the best after show podcast of all time.
There you go, over promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with
Covino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
What call us that you can't solve ignorance? Yeah, we've
been trying for twenty years.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
He also said some people aren't willing to evolve. Thank goodness,
baseball finally decided to because it's winning and we established
that well, football has always done a great job evolving,
which is why it's king and we're going to talk
about of NFL out of football this hour on Covene
owner Rich One. Last point. Yesterday I got my shag
trimmed up for the weekend. How do you like to
(26:20):
sound looking good? Huh huh, looking good?
Speaker 4 (26:23):
Baseball?
Speaker 3 (26:23):
You weren't going to go to the Johannio Swearez mullet.
You're not gonna go with that probably in the winter, tay. Yeah,
but baseball passed the barbershop test too. You know, yesterday
I was there getting a trim up for the weekend,
and all the Vato's there at shop. Man, they're buzzing
about baseball. I'm telling you, buzz not always like that.
(26:45):
Can it's buzzing about it. Yes, with a two clip
one and a half little shirt on the sides, but yeah, man,
it was excitement in the barbershop, just people talking about
their team and talking about the moves. And it's usually
football or basketball, and baseball was popping. We made it clear, yea,
(27:10):
But now we talk cam Ward, but we get you involved.
At eight seven seven for the Herd eight seven seven
forty four thirty four thirty seven. We're giving away prizes,
we're playing games. We got weekend hobnobbing. What you need
to watch this weekend. But before we talk some football,
I know we have someone on hold that wants to
talk Shador Sanders specifically.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
All right, let's do it.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
I'm down to till we got Dany Jhador Terry in
San Diego.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Back it off, Terry, Terry, back it up. Holds up, buddy.
Speaker 6 (27:37):
Hey guys, now, I get a little frustrated with ESPN
because they have a tendency to bury people they don't
like and prop up people they do. And it seems
like Shador Sanders has been propped up a little bit
too high, and Dylan Gabriel is getting buried. I mean,
if you compare their college stats, they're pretty similar. But
if you look at who they played, Dylan Gabriel played
(28:00):
an amazing schedule and beat some big teams and Shador.
I mean, as much as they want to say he
was a number one draft pick, I mean you look
at his mentor, Tom Brady, who owns the owner of
the Raiders, who need a quarterback. The Raiders took not
five players ahead of Shador, they took seven before Shadull
(28:20):
was drafted in the fifth round, which tells you Brady
might know something. But this morning, when when Herm Edwards
comes on and says that Dylan Gabriel is less mobile
than Shador Sanders, that is just that that just crazy.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
You know what it is too. I'm not saying you're
wrong by any means, but.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
In this business, and I considers consider a broadcasting tycoon,
some names are just sexier than others. There's a reason
that you know, Lebron does anything, and they're talking Lebron, Lebron, Lebron.
It gets people's attention. And Sanders is a pretty big name.
We've grown up with that name. People care about Shador Sanders.
(29:01):
Doesn't necessarily mean he's the best, but we talk about
him like he is. Well, it's not just ESPN Terry,
And I'll tell you why, because I just searched while
you were asking the question.
Speaker 4 (29:13):
I searched it.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
There was an update if the Browns had said anything
about who's starting, and it said currently this four people,
and they still have not thought about it, not five.
Right now they're saying Flaco pick it, Dylan Gabriel and Shador.
But then under that danyg would you believe every single
article is about shad Or Sanders from Newsweek to ESPN tox.
Speaker 5 (29:34):
Although I found Brown's Nation Cleveland reporter Tony Grossi hey.
He He says that he believes the Browns view their
rookie quarterback as a number one pick from the neck up.
He says, they're very intrigued by Dylan Gabriel. So, I mean,
there's a good chance Gabriel is going to get some
starts of the season.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Look, they're all in it to win it. This is
the game of winning, So props to dealing Gabriels. Anyone's
job to win. Well, I know again you're you're saying that,
but now I'm reading another thing, Cleveland. I'm not saying
it's a mess. Because sometimes a plethora, I'm sorry, did
you say a plethora? I said a plethora. Sometimes a plethora.
(30:15):
You even know what a plethora is? Oh see, I
think you have a plea of quarterbacks. Sometimes a plethora
is a good thing. Sometimes it just means you don't
have the one. Like if you're dating a bunch of
random people, it's probably because you haven't met the one,
or maybe you're just you know, an asked Magnet, you
don't know now four quarterbacks? Could it be that Gabriel
(30:36):
or Shador eventually steps it up? Right now, every single tweet,
every single report is saying that the Browns may be
leaning towards Shadoor. A lot of people say it'll be
Flacco to start the season and then they go from there.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
But Whatsten Man? Speaking of starters, how.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
About that guy in Miami to a Tagov.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Did you guys see that? I was playing it this
morning and Spot was like, is that real? And I'm like,
I hope it is? You know what it sounded like? AI? Right?
Do you tag.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
If you have not heard Donald Trump say to his
last name, then you're in luck. Is it about ten minutes,
fifteen minutes or so, let's make sure we pull it
and play it. I know, Ian, if you're listening in
the editing room, please get too, he says tag Oh Vally,
I believe he says it like real again segment. We
(31:35):
live in the said world now where I don't know
if anything's real or fake, So let's also.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Double check if it could be completely right.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Well, speaking of quarterbacks, see we're talking about African Suor
Sanders and he you know, dropped to what the because
he's drowned talk. I know, cam Ward, you're number one
freaking pick. There's two thoughts about him. Danny G and
I were both on the same mindset last night because
I hit Danny up with something and then he hit
me up with something right after that. Cam Ward, get this,
(32:03):
has the lowest overall Madden rating for a number one
pick in the last twenty five years.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Low.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
Now, you might say, who gives a funk or wagnle
my favorite encyclopedia bread funk and Wagner.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
Gives who gives a crowd gives a terrible terry funk.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
But let's be honest, the younger generation and gamers do
put a lot of stock in their Madden rating stock.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
I mean, how many.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Times have you heard players like jokingly and not jokingly
complain like yo, yo, they got it wrong. I think
that doesn't matter. You're over fifty easily because everyone younger
knows that it's way important for these young guys. So
the fact that cam Ward has the lowest Madden rating
for a number one pick in the last twenty five
years says something. And Danny G read the tweet that
you just sent me after that.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
And then there's a meme that says you can comfortably
say cam Ward is the least discussed number one overall
pick that's a quarterback heading into their rookie year in
the past twenty years, and that.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
All is a fact.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
So I'm here to say this, guys, this is the
best thing ever for Cameron Ward. The fact that cam
Ward is not being talked about. There's no hype train. Oh,
we talked about him yesterday when he said the offense
is really mid right now.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
He did say the word mid, and we like that.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
Yeah, he didn't say they were chopped though, No, but
mid meaning they're not doing that great, they're kind of average.
But the simple fact that the expectation is not off
the charts, the fact that his Madden rating is low,
the fact that all the attentions on Aaron Rodgers and
(33:39):
old guys and hey, is brock perty gonna earn his money?
Other Eagles gonna repeat, Yo, what's gonna happen with McLaurin,
the Cowboys gonna get it together? There's you know, thirty
two storylines in the NFL, and I think rookie number
one pick cam Ward is in the bottom tier of
hot NFL stories. And I think this worked to his
(34:00):
advantage because how many times are all eyes on the quarterback.
We saw with Caleb Williams, Oh look at me, he's
a painting his fingernails.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
And he did this.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
He established yesterday he said in the locker room is
usually the front man of the band. He's the most famous.
He's the face of the franchise.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
And in the division where Jacksonville, Trevor Lawrence has completely
underdelivered up into this point. In Indianapolis, we've joked about
how you know is it Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson?
That team's sort of in disarray. And then you said
Houston took a major step back last year when you
(34:38):
thought CJ. Stroud and that crew had it together. I
still think they're good, but don't be shocked. Our buddy
Towey from the Herd yesterday was saying, how don't be
surprised if that is a surprising team this year, that
they're better than you thought. Tennessee cam Ward, no one's
talking about him. And listen, Nashville is a great city.
(34:58):
For some reason, it doesn't pop with NFL talk. It's
just one of those great cities. They're building a new stadium.
It's the bachelorette capital of the world. But for some reason,
I think it's safe to say, Danny Ryan, I think
everyone in this room would agree that the Tennessee Titans
are not a very They might be one of the
lower talked about teams in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (35:20):
Ever, do you know that.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
I mean, was there ever a time where people were
really talking about the Titans.
Speaker 5 (35:25):
No, And in all the power rankings you see, the
Titans are in the bottom of five of the lists.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
So there's sort of something to be said about the
low expectation, the low amount of buzz. It leaves you
the opportunity to create your own buzz because if there
was all this big hype, like a Caleb Williams or
a Trevor Lawrence or something like, then when you don't
deliver right away, people start saying, Oh, they're not that good.
(35:50):
Is it a bust situation? All that, I think cam
Ward should be tickled pink.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
I don't even know what that means, but he should be.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
So thrillings flattered. Yeah, he should be so pumped that
no one seems to care. It's true, it takes some
pressure off the situation. Listen, gives you a room to
grow a little bit because you know, I commit out
to the criticism. If he delivers, the money will be there.
He'll make that in that second contract. If he's still around,
(36:19):
he'll make the money. That's not the issue. He'll get
the endorsements. He'll be a hero to that region of
NFL fans if he delivers. But the idea of going
into your rookie season as a number one pick and
there's no spotlight on you, that is comforting as could
possibly be. And what was Danny g saying in our
(36:40):
pre show meeting believe it or now? We have meetings
about this before we actually get on the air. I
know it's hard to believe. Plus three fifty for offensive
Rookie of the Year Ye, yes, sir.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
And there was a story yesterday expectation. Yeah, this was
a quote from him yesterday. I've grown up watching my
dad wake up at four thirty am doing a job
he didn't like. So, you know, if I can't wake
up early and do what I need to do for
a job I do, like, I shouldn't be playing football.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
He's got attitude. He's got a good attitude. Yeah, like
that he has the right mindset. I know it's just
a stupid viral video, but have you ever seen that
one of him and Shaudor Sanders thrown with each other
and he saw of Alpha's Oh yeah, he alphas Schor
Sanders big time, and he sort of pushed a door
in his place, and I was like, oh, cam Ward's
got some playables. There was actually a counterproductive I think
(37:27):
for Shudor Sanders at the time to practice with him
and made him look bad.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
So we shall see your thoughts on cam Ward. I
think breaking audio news. Oh we have it. Yeah, thank you.
I h tag oh vall ya.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
He's very good, Yeah, very good. One more time, one
more time from President Trump.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
Toua tag oh vall ya. It's so awkward to see
you yet.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Now if you get to see the clip of it,
Vance Vance is standing nearby and he's just trying not
to crack up.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
I'll be honest, jd.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
Vance is like your buddy's standing behind you when you're
like doing a speech and he knows you're messing up. Honestly,
I want to hear Trump say all of his best
friends in sports, names like Yannis's name, anybody he dows yesterday,
Henny swarries, I want to hear everybody's name, and he
(38:30):
said to it just needs to stay healthy.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
I know some deep analysis that is funny.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
And by the way that I don't know what was
better that or can we no say in a navy
and yesterday for water heaters.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
I mean that's how me and my boys say.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
But you know, I will say, there's no more daunting
feeling if you were given a name like that. Have
you ever seen some of those graduation fails where this
poor man or woman spent four plus years in college
or grad school and they walk up together diploma and
they butcher their name or say something like Milde inappropriate. Yeah,
(39:06):
it's the weakest, so bad, so they shout out to
to uh what was it again?
Speaker 4 (39:12):
To uh tag o volley well hag.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
In Trump's defense, it's not an easy one, which is
why I only say to m.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
I honestly think that UFC.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Names might be tougher than hockey names nowadays because everyone
says them wrong.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
Everybody, bro, Yeah it could be.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Yeah, there they are a time I will never say
anything other than could be, Yeah, it could be. There
are athletes that I have I have purposely have never
even went there purposely, Yeah, because you don't want to
be that And you're right about that. Could you know
if you watch UFC on the weekends, which a lot
of guys do we do, there'll be times where the announcer,
(39:55):
the ring announcer, and the backstage reporter say the the
fighter's name three different ways. We experienced that not too
long ago with better Bev and Bible, Bevil, bivel oh Dmitri, Bivil, Bible,
Bivil Dmitri.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
Is it Bivil, Bible or Bevel?
Speaker 3 (40:13):
When I tell you we were we were at the
fight in Vegas, and every single promoter, trainer, everyone's like, yeah,
and at Bevil, Bevel, Bible and is it Bijon or Bijon?
Well we all know that now, Yeah, I have a
question and then we'll move on. When someone corrects you
on their name pronunciation, is it then rude to go
(40:36):
back to what you were saying anyway? Like Bijon Robinson
told the world, listen, I know almost star running back.
You guys all know me, but for real, it's not
Bijon Robinson. It's Bijon. Do you think there's gonna be
a concerted effort for real? For everyone to be for broadcasters,
broadcasters respectfully try to make those adjustments. I was talking
(40:57):
to and I think the fan, yeah you might know,
but it takes you, Like how long did we say
Terrell Owens and it's Terrell Owens or Tyrod Taylor? Yeah,
Rod Taylor. Yeah, there's still a part of you that
it goes off, like, oh, it's it's to Rod. He
let it go too long, right? I think if you
let it go, if you were you respectfully try to
(41:20):
make the adjustment, nanny, if you if you, if you
get wind of it, and everyone else still says it
the wrong way, like the example I just used in
the hallway, I was talking to uh Burschita, the bershonader
Bursch that uh you know runs this place with Mike's
not here. Burscheto Bursh and Ian, we were talking about him.
One of our favorite shows, can we know Dexter Resurrection
(41:41):
my dork Passenger, that's Martin. It's a great show. Dexter's
so freaking good. I was talking about how it's so
good on Paramount Plus and Ian like a lot of
people said, man, you know, Dexter was great, but I
you know, it hasn't been the same since the Trinity Killer.
And I said, oh, John Lithgow, because the world knows
him as John Lithgow.
Speaker 4 (42:02):
Yeah, he told us straight up, and not the name drop.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
He was on our show and he's like, you know,
it's actually Lithgo, but everyone says Liftgal. So you know
we had that experience too, not the name drop, but
we had Chad Krueger on our show from Nicol Black
Nickel Black. That's not how he's saying. No, he told
us it's really nickel Black. Chad Krueger is spelled Kroger.
(42:26):
But he's like, nah, I mean it's it's Kruger, but
a lot of people think it's Nickelback's Chad Kroger and
the other one. This is actually for real. You probably
had a crush on her in the nineties, Sarah Michelle Galaar,
it's actually it's not Sarah Michelle Geller. She is.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
It's Sarah. Speak for yourself. Bro.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
I thought you're talking Carmen Electra. Oh that's Electroal so hey,
you know, props to John Robinson, h TUA. And again
we go back to cam Ward, wishing him the best
in his rookie campaign. And again I always think the
best situations are those where you have the work ethic
(43:06):
and you you're gonna put all the effort in, but
there's no pressure.
Speaker 4 (43:12):
Going under the radar. Here is gonna work to his advantage.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
I think no doubt because there's no there's no added pressure,
no high expectations owing Boom to get him astok A,
look at Caleb Williams as much as I respect him,
and I think he's going to be a star. Danny
g you remember Bears fans, we're talking about his rookie year,
like postseason baby, because when you overhip, you're only gonna underproduce.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
For the most one.
Speaker 5 (43:33):
Not not just Chicago fans, you guys, exactly a year ago,
you guys were leading just about every show we had
with Caleb Williams star.
Speaker 4 (43:41):
There was a lot of talk about Caleb. And you
know what, Danny goes back to wrap this up.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
It goes back to my favorite lesson I try to
remind all men because this applies to in the workplace,
in the bedroom, on a night out. You never want
to overpromise and underdeliver. You always want to do the opposite.
You always want to, you know, maybe downplay it, underpromise
(44:05):
a little bit and then over deliver. If you you know,
you tell some girl you're gonna rocker world in the bedroom,
and then you know, you come up, you know like yeah,
Like people are big talkers. Don't realistic expectations a big talker.
And the other one I always love is like, I
see why idiot friends do this. They'll tell their wife
or girlfriend like, yeah, I'll be home soon. I'm on
(44:26):
my way home, and I'm like, you just ordered another drink.
You're not gonna be home, Like, then you're gonna be late.
Say you're gonna be home at two am, then come
home at one am, and I think you're the greatest. Yeah,
so I just missed you.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
Honey. Wait a second, you get to stay out till one. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:41):
So don't ever over promise an under deliver or under
producer and cam Moore to set up for success here,
I think, I think at least, so all right your
thoughts at Kobe non rich In for Colin on The Herd.
Speaker 4 (44:52):

not alls that think they know everything about sports, do
you know your w NBA players? Because I feel like
most people are still learning, right, I mean feel like

Speaker 4 (47:42):
Okay, you say you're a caddy.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
Yeah, like like bed bunny and have greright by the way.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
All right, How great was he? That is one of
the best parts.
Speaker 5 (47:52):
