Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh do we have a show today? It is Friday.
What a night of sports. God bless American and what
it grants us. Dodgers, Phillies, all time finish, Eagles, Giants.
I was saying myself last night, I'm watching them.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
I'm gonna leave with the Dodgers. I'm watching that game. Yeah,
the Giants Eagle to come back and win. And then
I'm like, oh, oh, we got a story in New York.
Oh my, oh my, jmact blazing five and one hour
off a winning week. We both had good week. That
had a good last night, but good week week. Last
night I told you, I told you to beware last night.
(01:04):
These division games are crazy. I want to start with this.
Last night was not about the Eagles. Saquon average five
yards of carry, season high in yards. AJ Brown got touches.
It was not about the Eagles. That's not what last night. Well,
I'm not gonna open the show criticizing the Eagles. Last
night was about the New York Giants. They have found
(01:25):
their franchise quarterback. It's gonna be bumpy. You're gonna have
weeks like last week and you're gonna have last night
if they can keep him healthy, confident, athletic, slippery, big
boy NFL throws. That is an NFL franchise quarterback feet
arm confidence. Once you get that right, Giant fans, such
like when you found Eli, gets much easier to build
(01:47):
the roster. I mean, the Giants last night are missing
their number one receiver and the number two receiver and
they scored thirty four points. I know you all loved
Obj and you love Malik Neighbors Come Mbra though. That's
icing The cake is Camp's Skataboo and Jackson Dart because
of the way they play. They're tough, they're young, they're physical.
(02:10):
In the Northeast because of the weather, Tyreek Hill is
not winning your titles. Your left tackle is your star back. January.
Football is not decided by the fastest guys. Jackson Dart's tough,
Camp's Scataboo's tougher. If you can keep Andrew Thomas the
(02:30):
left tackle healthy, you got your three guys. That's going
to be your future. So the New York Giants have
not had an offensive identity in a decade. In a decade,
and they decided a couple of weeks ago, let's start
the rookies. Let's let Jackson and Camp Scataboo. It's their offense.
Since then, the Giants lead the NFL in first downs,
(02:52):
believe it or not. So it's not just the win
last night. It's not just the production. It's how they're
doing it. It is a Northeast physical football team. Go
to the Patriots dynasty. They never won when they were
at their flashiest with Randy Moss. Those were the years
they didn't win. They won early when they were tough physically,
(03:13):
and they were winning late when they had Edelman and
Brady and Gronk and always great on third down. Giants
were amazing on third down last night. A lot of
those fast teams aren't amazing on third down. They're just
fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Again.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
I like Malik Neighbors, OBJ was fun. That is icing
the cake in Northeast football. When the Steelers were great,
it was defense and Big Ben, the best Peyton Manning
Colts team ever, could run the ball and play defense.
Aaron Rodgers title with the Packers. They actually ran the
ball and had his best defense as a Packer quarterback.
(03:48):
That's Northeast football. So they decided to start these guys
week four. We're going to give the kids the offense,
and it looks different. There's an identity. It's physical overflash.
It is steak over sizzle. There's nothing wrong with a
little sizzle. You can't build around it. So that's last
Night's not about the Eagles falling apart. I can talked
(04:09):
about that in thirty minutes. That's and once you get
the quarterback, once you find the quarterback, you can then
identify what you are. You can't do that without the quarterback.
Right right, Kansas City finds Mahomes. We're gonna be clever,
We're gonna be situational. We're because you have a situational,
(04:30):
brilliant quarterback who's really creative with a great arm talent.
So the Giants have just been swimming around drafting guys,
hitting on a lot of them on defense.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
What are they last night?
Speaker 1 (04:42):
I'm like, oh, yeah, you can build around that.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
That's an identity.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
If I told you an hour before the game one
of these teams is going to score thirty four points,
you would not have picked the New York Giants. Giant
fan wouldn't have picked after that Saints Debaucle. It's gonna
be uneven, and it's gonna be choppy, and you're gonna
have bad weeks because they're kids. But Brian dabol After
saw what we all saw.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
You go through some tough times and sometimes you can
get stronger from it, or sometimes you can fold. I
like our guys, these young players. I have a lot
of confidence in these young players, these rookies.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
They got the right mindset. They're tough.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Northeast Football Championship Football. Find me, find me the warm
Weather dynasty in the NFL. Dolphins have never had one,
Caroline has never had one, Arizona's never had one. Rams
a big good, not a dynasty. Find me one. Find
me the warm Weather NFL dynasty. Marino and Don Shula
(05:51):
won Super Bowl one, Peyton manning Indy one to one
and is great. You look at the history of the NFL,
the Green Bays, the Kansas City, Seattle's mini dynasty, Baltimore's greatness, Pittsburgh,
New England, the Giants when they beat Brady twice. What
was it about that defensive front? That's an identity. I
(06:14):
watched the Giants last night. Oh you can, Oh, okay,
you could put your arms around that and build around
what I watched last night. That one handed catch years ago.
That's just a moment. Okay, So last night, I mean
it was amazing about last night is you had seven
or eight of the best hitters in baseball and it
(06:37):
was eventually the bottom of the Dodgers' lineup that got
it going. But it was palpable. And the Dodgers do this.
They put so much pressure on your manager and your
pitching staff. And last night Oriyan Kirkians, a young pitcher
for the Phillies, super talented. Here's the moment, the crowd
(07:02):
on its feet, and this really talented kid.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Couldn't rise to the moment. No balls in a strike
has breaks his bat.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Kirkering gotta find it, throws to the pint.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Oh my goodness, it throws it away, and the Dodgers
have won.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
The Dodgers Gwynn.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Kirkering right there. Plenty of time to go to first.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
I mean, plenty of time to go to first even
though we bobbled this, they.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
Just kind of in the moment panic.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Should have gone to first base, right bouncer boom, first base.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
You're out.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
But that's what the Dodgers do. They get in your head.
I mean, O Tawi was one for seventeen in the series,
O Tawni, and they walked him to load the bases
in the seventh O Tawni, Betts, Munsey Freeman, Edmund Tioskar Hernandez.
Constant pressure. Dodgers didn't even hit.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
In this series.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
They didn't really hit the series, but they won. And
it was the bottom of the lineup that did it.
You know, it's Keith k it's Monsey, it's Edmund. It
wasn't even the top of the lineup. It's constant pressure.
Then rokis Asaki came on and the Dodgers' bullpen has
been a problem all year, so they've moved him to
(08:20):
the bullpen to be the closer. Three innings last night, untouchable.
So the Dodgers are now in the NLCS, and you
got Freddy Freeman and Otani hitting a buck eighty twelve strikeouts.
That's what the Dodgers are. We talked about this with
the Yankees. Yankees are home run reliant. The Dodgers are
reliant on no single player Otawani. The last two years,
(08:44):
he has struggled in the postseason. I mean last year
it was Freddy Freeman in the World Series. I mean
earlier this year, Mookie Bets got sick, couldn't hit in September.
He's now on fire. It was the bottom of the
Dodgers lineup last night. So when you play the Dodgers,
and this is really true about all sports, they put
(09:05):
it's almost like KD Steph Clan Draymond remember, for about
three years, like pick your poison, Who's hot tonight? There
were games Draymond took over. There were games Klay Thompson
hit six of eight threes. Who do you guard? Who
is it tonight? That's what it is with the Dodgers.
It was their young pitcher throwing one oh one, a
(09:29):
nasty splitter. It was the bottom of their lineup, and
it was the crowd. It was the crowd. It wasn't
O Tawny, it wasn't Freeman, it was the crowd and
the pressure and it's never ending and they keep putting
it on you. Here was Dave Roberts on the play
that sent the Dodgers to the NLCS.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
It's brutal.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
Obviously, they played great defense tonight, and you know, it's
one of those things that it's a PfP, a pitch
fielding practice, and he's done it a thousand times, and
you know, just right there, he was so focused, I'm sure,
on just getting the hitter, and you know, just sort
of forgot, you know, the outs in the situation.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, you're not doing that against most teams in Major
League Baseball, but in that spot, against that team and
they're in your head, you lose yourself. The Phillies did,
and in the process lost their series. By the way,
you know, Otani and Freddie Freeman aren't the only one struggling.
Trade Turner struggled, Bryce Harper, struggled, Kyle Schwarber a couple
(10:32):
of bombs he struggled. So the Philly you get into
the postseason, I mean, think about all the great hitters
Otani and Freeman, Trade Turner, Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Nobody's hit,
nobody's hitting in the series. So it comes down to moments,
It comes down to base running. We talked about this
with the Yankees.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
They are so beholden to the home run.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
It's so much of its pitching, so much of it's circumstantial,
so much of its timing is the bottom of the
lineup and base running. Dodgers could not depend on the
big bats in this series and still found another way
because this is what they do. I've said this before.
I think the Dodgers are the best run sports organization
in North America. Drafting, developing, free agency. They just don't
(11:20):
miss very often. Jay Meg, great show to a blazing five,
top of the hour, Camp Scataboo's doing flips in the
end zone.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
He is fun man. Oh yeah yeah.
Speaker 8 (11:31):
Basically, Jackson Darts turning into Jeremy Lynn in New York.
He's a brush fire that everybody's excited about. If you
think he's your franchise quarterback, you got another thing coming.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
All right.
Speaker 8 (11:41):
He's a nice story, Colin, let's be real, come on,
I think he's a little better than that. Oh okay,
I love Jeremy Lynn during his time. It's awesome, But
I mean Dart.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Is way too reckless on the script.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
Well, he's gonna get murdered out there.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
He's gotta yeah. I mean, that's part of it. I
think it's I mean, remember Baker Mayfield in his second
or third year in Cleveland, he threw an interception. He
tried to square up a safety and it banged up
his shoulder. Young players, they're raw. I said this before though,
before the season started. I said, Jackson Dart was in
college with Lane Kiffen for three years. Lane Kiffin's coach
(12:16):
in the pros. Lane's an elite offensive coach. If you're
with Lane Kiffen for three years in the SEC, against
those NFL level defenses, NFL players everywhere, you don't need
to sit for a year. This is not like BYU football,
you're a year starter. This is Jackson Dart started in
the SEC with Lane Kiffen for three years. The Russell
(12:36):
Wilson thing was nice. I think you saw Brian Dable
rushing to the tenth. He wanted Jackson Dart on the field,
and we said this start Jackson Dart. When you play
in the Big ten, or you playing the SEC and
you're playing three years with a really smart offensive coach,
you don't need to sit. This is not somebody from
you know, a Mountain West Conference, a one year with
(12:58):
a defensive head coach, Jackson Dart's ready to play. And
the great thing about that is you're gonna find out.
By the way, last weekend the Giants had five straight
possessions with a turnover, so it can get really bad.
They were fumbles some of them. And then last night
he was magic. So it's not like bow Nicks last
week in the first half awful, second half outstanding. So
(13:19):
it's not going to be linear. It's going to be
all over the map. But what you look for in
these moments with bow Nixon Denver, he'll make throws and
you're like, okay, that is a franchise quarterback throw. I
can remember watching Matt Ryan as a rookie and he
was facing the Bears and he threw a ball at
the left sideline one throw and I was like, yeah,
that's an He threw it between the corner and the safety,
(13:41):
and it was the first time I'd watched Matt Ryan
out of Boston College and I said, oh, yeah, that's
a starting quarterback. I remember Cam Newton. I think he
played Arizona, could be wrong. He went on the road
in Arizona. I didn't know if he'd work. He was
a great athlete. He made a throw against Arizona. It
was down the left sideline and you're like, yep, that
is a franchise quarterback. So you absute least see a
franchise quarterback. But it's not gonna be artistic. Andrew Thomas
(14:06):
doesn't play. The on line gets bad. Like so it's
this idea, Brock perty got to sit for a year
and learn this.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Sit.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Jackson Dart's like, bro the old line's not much. Top
two receivers are out. It's the Eagles. Yeah, that was impressive.
That's an impressive deniable. That's Cake that's not icing. Don't
mean Jay's one handed catch is icing?
Speaker 8 (14:23):
How about the am I can't wait for you to
talk about the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
I mean out gained in every game this season. Well,
they had three hundred and fifty yards that I.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Didn't think zero points in the second half old.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
Now that's terrible defense.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
That's something else to talk about and we will coming up.
Speaker 2 (14:38):

Speaker 1 (15:14):
Here we go Friday Hour two, Fired Up Lines in
Los Angeles. It's the Hurt whatever platform you're on. Thanks
for making us part of your day. I have a
very interesting topic in about five minutes I'm going to
get to before I get to my picks. Now, I
will admit I'm going to stay away from Chiefs Lions.
(15:36):
I want to watch the game. I think it's a
field goal game either way. I think Kansas City's better
than people think. But I think Detroit's run game is
demoralizing and clock controlling and difficult, so I'm going to
stay away from that. I'm taking some ugly teams this week.
Speaker 8 (15:51):
I have no fears, so I'll be discussing Ceast Lions later.
Some numbers for you not great for your number one
team in the hurt hierarch.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
So let me just say this, feast on ugly teams.
You bet Carolina more than like Carolina guy, But I
got my picks this week and I like him. Here
we go.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Let's blaze it up, fired up, It's Collins blazon.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
Fuck Seahawks at.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Jagobsh Seattle plus one and a half go money line.
They're gonna win this puppy outright. One of five teams
to hold a fourth quarter lead in every game. Even
the games they lost, they could have won. Number two
scoring offense. Since Week two, they've been a great road
team with Mike McDonald eight game road winning streak, and
donald is on an absolute eater in his last three
(16:41):
weeks of passer rating over one thirty.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
The Jags on short.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Rest off a highly emotional win, probably the biggest Jags
win in several years. Offensively, they are terrible on third down.
The Seahawks played their worst defensive game of the season.
They'll be in a bad mood. Watch Seattle's defense come
back revert to what we know they are. The turnover
(17:08):
regression for Jacksonville. They're not going to keep getting three
and four turnovers a game. Seattle wins outright in a
bad mood Cross Country thirty twenty seven. Hawks rebound from
that loss last week.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
Patriots six seat Take.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
The under Patriots Saints under forty five and a half points.
Neither team runs the ball right. Patriots and Saints are
scoring under twenty points in half their games this year.
New England's again coming off an emotional, dramatic, tough road win.
I think they come back down to Earth. I think
they win, but it's going to be ugly and low scoring.
(17:45):
They're a top ten scoring defense. Christian Gonzalez now he's back.
It's hard to throw on them. The Saints. Spencer Rattler's
interesting nine touchdown passes an eleven career starts. These are
two teams still finding their way. Can't run the ball.
Patriots win, but take the under. Let's say at twenty
(18:07):
one to twenty ugly choppie game.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
Take the under Chargers at DOLFI can't believe it, but.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
I'm gonna take Miami plus the four and a half.
Listen two at home has been good his last seven
home games. He's not the problem. One twelve passer rating.
Chargers could be on their third running back and their
third left tackle. They are a mess, and what that does?
They settle for field goals. They are struggling in the
(18:36):
red zone, so even if they dominate time of possession,
they're not gonna dominate in the red zone. Justin Herbert,
three straight games with at least one interception. So I
get a team traveling cross country on backups to backups,
a Miami coach fighting for his career, and they're getting
(18:57):
four and a half at home. I think I'm gonna
take the Dolphins. Chargers probably win this game twenty four
to twenty three. I'm absolutely taking the points with the
Dolphins Titan Raiders again. I'm betting ugly this week. I
like the Raiders minus three and a half. They're coming
off a humiliating road loss. What the teams do when
(19:21):
they're humiliated. The Giants got humiliated last week they beat
the Eagles. They have found a rushing game with Ashton genty.
Look at the last two weeks for the Raiders one
hundred and seventy three yards rushing yards per game. So
they're gonna lean on that, and folks Tennessee's awful. Forget
(19:42):
the win last week, They're awful. Hell, the twenty points
are fewer and four to five games allowing six yards
of play, So again, I don't love Gino. I think
they're gonna run the ball. It's gonna be ugly. The
Raiders were humiliated. Maybe it's one of their few wins
on the year, but I'm gonna take it. Swallow the points.
(20:02):
Twenty six seventeen over. What I think in Tennessee right
now is easily the worst team.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
In the league. Bears at Commanders.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
My favorite bet of the week is the Commander's minus
four and a half. They're two and zero at home,
both blowout wins last three weeks, averaging twenty seven plus
points in three games. Okay, so they're getting points on
the board. Jayden Daniels last week looked excellent according to PFF.
They also have the best special teams and their defense
is getting after it upfront. So I think you're gonna
(20:33):
see the Washington of last year. Terry mcclaurin could play
the Bears. They've lost four straight in prime time. They're
not a rise to the moment franchise. They've been a
bad road team forever. Their defense is allowing the most yards.
Do you know that lost in all this Caleb Williams discussion.
Their defense is allowing six points seven yards of play.
(20:54):
It's atrocious. The Commanders win thirty three to twenty six. Jmack,
I love my picks. I'm taking some ugly I'm taking
the points in Miami. At home, I'm taking the Raiders.
Raiders had the Bears beat last week if not for
that field goal.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
You don't like my picks, you know what happened.
Speaker 8 (21:13):
If you lie down with dogs, you get fleas colin
and there's some there's some gross this yere so I
respect that. By the way, did you look at the
Seahawks injury report? Three of the four starters in the
secondary maybe down this week? Not great at all against
Trevor Lawrence who's slinging it.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
So you're gonna take a team take it? That is
literally kind of bipolarish at home after the most important
win for the franchise national TV game in years. I mean,
let's be honest about Jacksonville. When's the last time they
played back to back great games against good teams.
Speaker 8 (21:44):
Here's what I'm surprised that you're taking close spreads. There's
some big ones out there. Rams are big.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
It looks like Lamar's not going to go oh intersults
are big.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
Looks like Kyler's on this show What Did I Do
a week ago?
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Bills are going to crush the same Packers are going.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
To crush the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Chargers are going to crush the Giants last what was
last night? Eagle is going to crush I stayed away
from all of them. All Right, you know what game
I actually like? I could be out of my mind here,
He'll tell me. Dolphins Raiders. Yeah, that you're out of
your mind for sure when you when you they're running
(22:18):
the ball.
Speaker 8 (22:18):
Now.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon eastern non am Pacific.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
They played in the NFL for seven years. A Heisman
Trophy finalist, he's one of the voices of college football
at Fox. It's great to have mon Brady quinn Is
joining us. He'll be at that Ohio State Illinois game
where USC didn't exactly didn't exactly light the world up,
so that was pretty disappointing. We'll get to USC Michigan
in a bit. Listen, Ohio State. I've always felt Brady,
(22:46):
it's the SEC program up north. But that's when I
felt the SEC was better than the Big Ten.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
I think Indiana is the equal of old miss I think.
I mean you living them in West. I think time
have changed. I was watching Dave Portnoy this morning on
social and he did all these matchups, and I didn't
disagree with him. It does look different, Brady. When I
watched Big ten games five years ago, it looked different.
I think Ohio State's the best team in the country,
(23:13):
and I'm not sure Oregon's not second.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
How's that land for you?
Speaker 4 (23:18):
That's about right?
Speaker 10 (23:19):
I mean, I think you got to throw into Miami
into the conversation right now. I know that doesn't play
into a Big ten SEC debate when it's all said
and done. But the reality is the last two national
champions were Big ten teams. You go back and look
at the teams that are playing for it, even the
semi finals last year Penn State Notre Dame that is
not obviously the Big ten, but still a Midwest team.
You're seeing really a lot of these Big ten teams.
(23:40):
Midwest teams have caught up. And it's important for Big
ten specifically because they're getting more money in for NIL.
You know, they're just schools with a little bit more
money to be able to pass around. And when you
think about the transfer port, when thinking about how you
construct a roster, that plays a huge role.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
And so before NIL.
Speaker 10 (23:57):
Really became legalized for a lot of these players, I
think the SEC was able to dominate. And now players
are willing to go wherever they can to get an
opportunity to play win a national championship, and also, you know,
maximize their market ability and maximize their ability to make
as much as they can. So they're willing to leave
the warm confines of the South to be able to
go up to the North and be able to take
(24:17):
over on some of those teams and go win national championships.
So again, I think we're seeing that passing of the
torch right now, still a lot of football le f
P played. We'll see how it all plays out, but
I don't think there's any doubt about it. Our hot state,
Oregon looked to be two of the best, if not
the two best teams in the country.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
So when the West Coast teams joined the Big Ten,
you know, my take was Oregon and Washington already playing
cruddy weather all the time. It won't matter. The flights
are three and four hours, they're not eight. You're not
playing in Beijing. It's fine. But USC has been different, Brady.
They haven't looked physical. They look like a warm weather team.
(24:53):
They got pushed around last week by Illinois, and I
said yesterday this Michigan game, you got Notre Dame comme.
You're not beating Notre Dame there with that quarterback play
and that coach. You're not beating Oregon and Oatson. This
is a defining moment that you have pivoted the big
ten fold. I think it's that big of a game
for USC. I don't think it's that big for Michigan.
(25:14):
I mean, how is your feeling going into this game?
Speaker 10 (25:16):
In La more curiosity than anything else. I mean, very
simile to Illinois, who you talked about a little bit ago.
Disappointed you when they knocked off your you know, Southern
Cayl Trojans, but they responded after a really tough lost Indiana.
I mean, you're watch that tape going, how can this
be the same team? The way Brett Billen was able
to get Illinois to rally and respond to that, it's
(25:38):
going to be very similar to Lincoln Riley. He's got
to find a way to get his team to rally,
stay in this thing, realize that you know it's just
one loss. It doesn't define your season, or you can't
let it define your season. So their physicality will be
challenged once again by Michigan, because yes, the passing attack
has improved. Bryce Underwood probably had his best passing game
this past week versus Wisconsin, but different challenge in the past.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
Defence for Michigan's going to be challenged.
Speaker 10 (26:01):
Big time with mackay Lemon, Jacoby Lane, all the playmakers
that USC has on the outside as talent of quarterback
as Jade Maava is, so we know that they can
match up in that respect. The question is if Michigan
starts to play Bolli ball very similar the way Illinois
was able to run against them, are.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
They going to be able to get off the field.
Are they going to be able to get stops?
Speaker 10 (26:21):
Because the Illinois USC game was not as close as.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
The score predictive be.
Speaker 10 (26:24):
There's two fumbles that were going into the end zone,
one of which never should have been overturned or never
should call in the first place.
Speaker 4 (26:30):
He was already down.
Speaker 10 (26:31):
So when you look at this matchup, it's really a
challenge to USC to see how they can respond physically
more than anything else. And it's going to speak volumes
about where this program's at. And the tough thing for
them is they got to play Michigan, then you go
on the road to play Notre Dame, another physical team.
They're going through a gauntlet this season of physicality. You've
got to play Nebraska at some point too. All those matchups,
(26:53):
it's going to be whether or not they can not
only survive and then meet that physicality, but sustain it
throughout the rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
So before I get to your Ohio State game, Notre
Dame plays NC State, then they play sc So it's
one of those weird games where your big rivals the
following week.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
A trap game, trap game. He's probably started to.
Speaker 5 (27:13):
Say, yeah, yeah, CJ. Carr is playing out of his mind.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
He is he a freshman? I think he's a freshman,
isn't he?
Speaker 4 (27:18):
Is he sure a freshman?
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Yeah? It's about I mean, the kid can play. So
I look at Dante More and CJ. Carr, and we
came into the year with all these big name quarterbacks
and I'm like, no, those are the two best quarterbacks.
Talk a little bit about CJ and talk a little
bit about Dante, because I don't think it's close. From
what I've watched this season, those guys that's Sunday football,
(27:42):
I mean, and it's way too early for CJ. But
those guys look special. Well what do you see?
Speaker 10 (27:48):
Well, let me first say this, I'd throw Fernanda Mendoza
at Indiana into that conversation. So he's been phenomenal this year,
and also Carson back He's responded well so far. So
I would say those four are playing the best quarterback
and joints as well as as number five of anyone
in the country right now. But specifically see Jayman. Look,
his grandfather was Lloyd Carr. We all know that as
Pops played as well. You can just tell the way
(28:10):
he plays the game. He's been brought up to be
able to read defenses, understand what offensive coordinators are trying
to execute on any given play. He's able to manipulate
the defense with his eyes. He does things that are
just so far beyond where he's at in his playing
career at Notre Dame. It gives you the sense that
you feel like he's almost NFL ready because of how
he plays the game. He's ridiculously accurate with the football
(28:33):
at all three levels in the field, and he can
move around, he can create, he can make something out
of nothing. So this young man, to me, and I've
said this before, I said it when he signed, I
think is going to be the greatest quarterback in Notre
Dame history.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
Like that's how special he is.
Speaker 10 (28:47):
When you watch him play the game, it feels like
everything's playing so slow for him. And very similar to
that Dante Moore, who was a big Notre Dame recruiter
I ended up going to UCLA.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
Obviously, he found his way to Oregon. Same thing.
Speaker 10 (28:58):
I mean, these young men calling the nowadays come in
so prepared mechanically, there's no flaws in their throwing motion.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
They're accurate as all get out.
Speaker 10 (29:06):
They understand what offensive cordators are asking from them at
these different concepts, how they're trying to attack a defense.
And you just saw in a big stage versus Penn
State how he handled in that clutch moment. So Dante
Moore is draft Eligi. Well, he is the guy that
if I was a team looking at this quarterback class
would have up there as one of my top quarterbacks
that I'm evaluating, potentially taking number one overall. So big
(29:29):
game for him this week obviously versus IU. He's got
a lot more to display, I think. But I think
the world of Dante mort too. He's very poised, another
wise young man. When you talk to him, he just
feels ready for the moment. Nothing's ever too big for him.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
So you have Ohio State Illinois. I got to give
Ryan Day credit. When people beat up on Ryan Day.
My take as well. He's losing the Hardballs Wolverines in Georgia.
Let's let's slow down. But I think it takes some
security to go. I'm gonna go to the NFL and
get Chip Kelly friends. I know that. But then he
does it again with Matt Patricia. And last year the
(30:03):
Buckeyes were kind of about their offense. This year the
kind of about their defense. And I got to tell
you when I when I watched that defense, how much
of it Brady is the scheme?
Speaker 5 (30:16):
Patricia?
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Because I think Chip Kelly by the end of that year,
they had good players. I mean, Abuka is obviously ridiculous,
but when you watch Ohio State's defense, they shut Washington down.
Is it the talent? Is it the players? Is that
Matt Patricia. What does the film tell Brady Quinn?
Speaker 4 (30:32):
I think it's the combination of all of it.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
I mean, I think, first off, where you give Randy
a lot of credits, the fact that he lost Jim Kelly,
you know, he lost Jim Knowles, and so you're fining,
you're you know, finding new people to come into those spots.
And for Matt Patricia to come down to the college level,
there's a bit of a learning curve there, but also
eight new starters on defense. So when you take that
into account, this group is playing as good, if not
better than last year's defense. And that's really saying something
(30:55):
for a lot of guys who are jumping into roles
like Kayden Curry, who's starting this year, is one of
the best edge rushers in the country right now, rvil
Reeese sunny styles. These guys have really you know, kind
of popped up versts on the scene. Is two of
the best defenders at the linebacker position you're going to
see all of college football. So it's part of obviously
the players and the skill they have, it's part of
the development. I also think it's part of the scheme
(31:17):
because it's a very different scheme than what we saw,
you know, last year from Jim Knowles, who typically had
kind of come from over that three three five. And
Matt Patricia is so multiple with that NFL approach, where
you're getting a variety of fronts, a variety of coverages,
a variety of looks that you have to deal with,
and throughout the course of the game, he's not allowing
you to get a beat on things. So defensively speaking,
(31:37):
they have been absolutely lights out. And it's important because
that talent and obviously their coaching staff, but also on
the flip side, looking at their offense, it's because of
how scary they are on that side.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
I mean, teams are.
Speaker 10 (31:48):
So afraid to give this offense opportunities with the football.
Go back to the Washington game. Really had seven drives
in the entire game. You're averaging usually twelve, So people
are almost running four minute offense is to start games
just to keep Julian sand and Jeremiah Smith and Carnell
Tate off of the field. Now, I know obvious State
doesn't run at a breakneck pace either on offense, but
(32:08):
still it goes to show you the respect that I
think a lot of teams have and what they think
of this team as a whole.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
But a lot of credit goes.
Speaker 10 (32:15):
To Ryan Day and you know, giving Brian Harlan that opportunity,
who's done a tremendous job with the offense, bringing joy
and sane along and really, you know, finding a freshman
and Bo Jackson, who's really emerged is probably their best
running back at this point too. For a team that
I think is going to be in the National championship
hunt once again. You know, that's that's a lot of
credit you're giving a young man to be able to
take over at that specific position, to be able to carry
(32:37):
the rock for you. But that's how this Ohio State
is kind of Ohio State team has emerged this year
after all the talent that's gone on the.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
NFL Big Noon kicked off ken Eastern Ohio State in Champagne.
I was there last week. The outcome was not my
favorite outcome of all time.
Speaker 10 (32:53):
A lot of us loved it, Actually, Colin, a lot
of us here in the Midwest we're not surprised by
I loved it.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
I bet uh no no tears. Great seeing you man.
You do just such a nice job. Thanks Brady,
