Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Oh, it is a Wednesday. There is a lot to
talk about. We've got ourselves a real world series. Michael
Jordan hammering current NBA stars, The Steelers are officially broken,
and the Chiefs have fixed all their problems. Again, it
(00:48):
is Wednesday. This is the Herd in Chicago. Wherever you
may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for
making us part of your day, well, Jmac. I like
the Dodgers in six and one of the reasons we
said we like the Dodgers in a long series is
Toronto gets bat on ball, so they got a lot
(01:09):
of power hitters. Their guys are all hitting and the
Dodgers guys are not. And last night was another example,
so we said, going in the Toronto Blue Jays, gut
check win for them. That's why they're in the World Series.
We didn't know if they were going to be on fumes.
They are a big inning team. Nine times in the
(01:30):
playoffs they've scored four or more runs in an inning.
That's three times more than the Dodgers. And they dropped
a four spot in the seventh inning. So oh Tani
was fine. He made in the first couple of innings.
Shoe Hey Otani made Toronto batters look really bad. He
mostly had his stuff. Shoe Hey was sharp six innings,
(01:52):
gave up six hits. He was fine. Now Vlad Guerrero,
and you know this is gonna happen. Vlad Guerrero was
eventually going to break out of it, and he did.
Vlad's hitting four nineteen in the playoffs. So when you
hang one up near his belt, he's gonna do that
and park it at Dodger Stadium. But here's a Dodger dilemma.
(02:15):
There are six players in the World Series that are
hitting three hundred or better, six five or Blue Jays,
Addison Barger hitting four to twenty nine, Vlad hitting four, Bobashett,
Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement. I mean, there's Sho Hao Tani's
mixed in there, but it is a real problem right now.
(02:37):
Toronto gets bat on ball, and last night's a prime example.
Dave Roberts had talked about show Hey bringing down the
velocity to see if he could last longer. So he
wasn't quite as dominating, but he left it was two
to one, and one long after that it was six
to one. Because this is what Toronto does. They get
bat on ball, and so you can't ask for everybody
(02:59):
that throw a complete game. Blake Snell goes tonight, but
the bigger issue is Max Months. He's hitting a buck
seventy six, Mookie Betts is hitting a bug fifty eight,
Tommy Edmond, great defensive players hitting the buck sixty seven.
So Freddie Freeman and O Tawny are carrying the offense.
They're on fire. Everybody else for the Dodgers is on
sabbatical with a lot of strikeouts, and once again last
(03:22):
night they stranded eighteen in the other night and one
last night they were zero for five with runners in
scoring position. So you just right now the story of
the series is O Tawny's unbelievable. But the Blue Jays
have five guys hitting over three hundred and a couple
(03:43):
at four hundred and above, So they're gonna have to
tweak that roster, tweet that lineup the bullpen again. It's
been spotty, hot and cold. Last night. Couldn't get outs,
but it was more about Toronto getting guys on arriving
runs in. Here's Dave Roberts on his struggling offense.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
We haven't found our rhythm. We haven't. It sort of
draws dead at certain parts of the lineup in different parts,
different innings, different games. You know, guys are competing. Certainly
in the postseason, you're seeing everyone's best. But yeah, you know,
(04:25):
my hope is we regroup tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Well, good luck, Blake Snell goes tonight and then we're
gonna get two games one minimum in Canada. But last
night was the Jays night and Otani was fine. He
was pretty sharp, but at some point Vlad was going
to break pitch up in the strike zone. He did
(04:50):
and the ball got rolling. All right. So the NFL
is pretty cruel when it comes to coaches. I mean,
it feels like Greg Popovich coach forever in San Antonio,
Spolstra coaching forever. Steve Kerr's got a job as long
as he wants it. But in the NFL, Andy Reid
got fired, Bill Belichick got fired, Cowboys got a new owner.
(05:13):
Tom Landry got fired. I don't know what to do
with Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin. The Steelers are broken, but it's
the defense that's broken. The Pittsburgh defense for the four
straight year is the most expensive in the league. Yesterday,
trade deadline coming up. They got a safety from the
(05:33):
new England Patriots, Kyle Duggar. That's not going to solve it.
When you watch that green Bay game Sunday night, football man,
is it apparent green Bay is a very progressive, smart
and current franchise. Aaron Rodgers is keeping them afloat. Actually,
the Steelers are averaging five point four yards of play.
That's good. I looked this morning, Top three red zone offense,
(05:57):
yards per play, red zone turnovers. Aaron Rodgers' influence has
been really, really impressive. He's having a sneaky year. He's
not throwing the ball deep downfield. Aaron's done his part.
But right now, that defense. You can't pay the most
for something and get lousy production. That's how TV shows
(06:18):
get canceled. That's the Steelers four straight year highest paid defense,
and they're bad. It's the worst in Tomlin's era. It's
like paying eighty bucks a month for a streaming service
with no hits. At some point where they hits. And
I've said this with Aaron Rodgers. He can be divisive
and polarizing. He's actually really good. He's not throwing the
ball down the field. This is not going to be
(06:38):
Jalen Hurts down the field to Devonte Smith. It's not
going to be Matt Stafford down the field to Puka.
That's not what this offense is. It is it's not.
This offense is big, large human beings fifteen yards an end,
but red zone that's a quarterback stat too. They're kind
of good this year. They're kind of good. They don't
(07:00):
turn the ball over a ton. So what do you
do with Mike Tomlin. I'm not anti defensive coach, but
the really good defensive coaches make an impact immediately. Mike
Frable comes in Patriots twenty second defense. Before Mike got
their fourth this year, Mike McDonald got to Seattle thirtieth
(07:21):
to fourteenth. Now they're top ten. I mean the Rams
don't spend anything on their defense. Their second it's cheap labor, right,
so when you have veterans, you're paying them a fortune
and they're awful. Kyle Duggar is not going to be
the answer. So I don't know what you do. It
feels like the Steelers are broken. I've always said I
(07:41):
judge coaches on their side of the ball. Say what
you want about Lincoln Riley of USC. The offense is fun.
You could argue he's not a head coach, he's not
a culture creator. You'll argue what you want. He gets
his side. I mean, the Rams offense is almost always good.
They can take fifth round Pooka, third round Cooper Cupp
and his prom fourth fifth round Kyron Williams, an undrafted
(08:05):
starting left tackle. Sean mcmay is squeezing every bit of
juice out of that Rams offense. Mid low round guys.
He'll make them work. They got a seventh round. Receivers
already have a touchdown pass this year. But with Mike Tomlin,
he's good at the podium. But I think the franchise
is broken.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Here's Mike. We all have to own it.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Certainly, you start with the schematics, man, because you know
that's the leadership component of it, and certainly we'll be
looking at everything that we're doing, man, because some of
these problems are somewhat repetitive and we're not getting better
fast enough.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
So the story yesterday they brought in traded a draft pick,
They brought in a safety from New England to try
to fix it because they've got injuries, which of course
everybody in the league has, but great brands can usually
pivot faster to get it right. But right now they're broken.
There's a lot going on. You know, Jay Mack, I
(08:59):
know you love NBA. You see Jannis last night. Jannis
last night was unbelievable. And you're sitting there watching that game.
And as I watched O Tawni in the World Series,
I watched Giannis and I think it feels like Otawni
with the Angels. You know, Tani was putting up huge
numbers with the Angels. But you're like, wouldn't it be
(09:20):
great if he kept playing in September late? Yeah, And
it's like three first round exits in a row for
Milwaukee and and and the Bucks have tried, by the way,
I mean they they they're gonna be paying Dame Lillard's salary.
Some of that for five years and they've exhausted draft capital.
It's not like Milwaukee didn't win it, titl or hasn't tried.
(09:42):
But I've got thoughts. I honestly, last night you watched
Giannis and it's got an O TAWNI feel with the Angels.
You're like, oh, I feel bad, but it's time to
restock the draft picks and get some other players. You're
mister analogy that that's a good one.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Hey boy, had looked like it last night.
Speaker 2 (09:57):

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Away, everybody ages differently. A lot of it's genetics. I
saw an interesting number the other day people that live
to be one hundred actually work out less than people
that die at eighty, meaning the octogenarians. They got good genetics.
That doesn't mean you can't improve the quality of your
life in your last five or six years, if you know,
(10:55):
you take your Omega three and eat your salmon and
your greens. But pro athletes that are hyper athletic or
depend on that, like a Russell Westbrook or a Cam Newton,
don't age as well. Like the NBA Kde age as well.
He's get a bucket. Guy. Steph will age well. Jokis
will age well, and we'll see. Yannis is fascinating. He's
(11:20):
gonna be thirty one here in like a week or so.
And there have been trade rumors for years with Yannis,
and my take is he's going to age quickly because
his game is predicated on he can't shoot, he's not
a shooter. It's gonna be predicated on his athletic ability.
And he's still got three or four great years.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
He had.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
He had thirty seven last night they beat the Knicks.
He's unstoppable shot like seventy five percent, but he's had
injuries and I don't think he'll age particularly well. And
Milwaukee three straight first round exits. That's in the East.
They're a mile They're a borderline playoff team in the
West with Yannis, So that tells you it's Giannis and
(12:02):
everything else it's got. You know, I said this for
years with Mike Trout. I don't care what the market
size is. There are I want to see great with great, Hanks, Spielberg, DiCaprio, Scorsese,
Samuel L. Jackson, Tarantino. I want great on great. You're
seeing it now, Dodgers, great organization, O Tawny. It feels different.
(12:25):
Mahomes read. It's not a market sized thing. Kevin Garnett
was won an MVP in Minnesota. You remember the Celtics,
And that's not to say that everybody's got to go
to a big market. I love watching the Packers play.
It's not a market sized thing. Great on great. Milwaukee
took some huge swings. Now they don't have draft capital
(12:46):
and they're paying Dame salary for five years or part
of it, and so it's like they tried, but they're
already viable in the East, they are not viable in
the East. In the West, they're probably a seven seed
with the honest who is unbelieva. So they've been a
very good regular season team. But I mean last year,
I think J Mack called it like one and done,
(13:08):
not competitive, got blown out several times first round. So
there have been these rumors. And by the way, not
all rumors are physical. Some are flirting emotionally. Giannis is
flirting emotionally. There's been a lot of talk when stuff
gets leaked, when somebody wants it leaked. There's been a
lot of stories that I think I read one of
them that there's a direct flight from Newark to Greece
(13:30):
and he wanted to be closer to the airport or something.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
All I know is there's rumors he's unbelievable. I would
love to see him play with ant I would love
to see him with Aman Thompson and KD. He's not
going to the Lakers. They don't have enough to give up.
I've said before, if I was the Warriors, I would
give up Kaminga, I give up Jimmy Butler. I'd give
(13:54):
up four first round picks. If I had to give
up pods. I'd consider it is Janis who was amazing
last night beating the next at home. On the New
York trade rumors.
Speaker 7 (14:07):
I don't I don't even remember that.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
Now.
Speaker 7 (14:08):
I'm like, I'm sure, but I was in my team
and that's it. We beat the Knicks. I didn't read
that article. I try to still away from all that
rumors and I don't know, you call it speculations and
trade and all this does it serve me? Won't beat that.
(14:29):
I try to involve myself and try to hold my
team win games.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yeah, he feels like he needs to be playing in
June and late May and not be a first round
exit guy. I felt, you know, watching him last night,
there's an Otani feel. You know. It's not that the
Angels couldn't be entertaining, but you need better people hitting
in front of him and behind him in a bigger stage.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
And with that, Joel clad, the voice of college football,
is now joining us. He's got Penn State at Ohio
State this weekend. So you know, these universities, they always
squawk about their running out of money. Boy, the nil.
How are we gonna make the nil work? And then
they buy out James Franklin and Brian Kelly at LSU,
so he got plenty of money. We were talking about this.
(15:19):
So Florida's got an opening, LSU's got an opening, Penn
State's got an opening. Now I think a lot of it.
Brian Kelly always felt Midwest to me, not Southern. I
didn't love the fit. But Urban Meyer went down and
won Natty's at Florida, and he's more Midwest. If you
said there was a the hottest coach in the country, LSU, Florida,
(15:40):
Penn State, is there a best job of those three?
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Yeah, I think LSU is and Colin. I would go
a step further and say I think LSU is a
top three job in the entire sport. I think only
Texas and maybe Ohio State are better than LSU. I
think think LSU is a better job than BAMA. I
think it's arguable between LSU and Georgia. They've got incredible resources.
(16:07):
The recruiting pipeline is right there. You're in the middle
of everything. In terms of recruiting. They have tradition guys
can win national championship there. So it comes down to fit.
I mean, why does Edozeron fit at LSU and not
Brian Kelly. I think it's what you were just talking
about about being rigid. You know, ed Ojeron, you know,
(16:27):
went down there and he was flexible and did some
things that maybe he was uncomfortable with, and all of
a sudden they turned into the best offense in the
history of college football in twenty nineteen with Joe Burrow
and Brian Kelly. I mean, it was the moment he
stepped onto that basketball court and gave the fake Southern accent.
I couldn't unsee that or unhear that. So every time
(16:48):
I saw him in an LSU shirt or hat, I
couldn't unhear the fake accent. It was never a good
fit and the authenticity was never really there at LSU.
Now starting to come out a lot of the former
players are chirping on social media and you're trying to
decipher what that is and peak under the hood a
little bit. But fit is very important. Back to your
(17:09):
question about like best jobs, I do think that LSU
is the best one of this cycle. And Colin I
would say that these three with Florida and Penn State,
I think are three of the top ten jobs in
all of college football. And I can't remember. Maybe I'm
just being recncy biased here. I can't remember a time
when we had this level of openings, in particular in October.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
That's never happened.
Speaker 8 (17:30):
We can talk about the timing of these firings as well,
but these are massive jobs that are all looking for
like the A list guy, and I would actually make
an argument that the talent pool is more thin than
it's ever been. You know, this is going to produce
a bit of an arms race. Lane Kiffin likely will
end up being the highest paid coach in college football
(17:52):
because of this. Dan Lanning will likely end up being
a fifteen million dollars a year coach because of this,
whether they stay in their respectives or move. I think
LSU is going to call Urban and Nick Saban, because
why wouldn't you. I think they're going to call Dan
Lanning and they're going to offer him the moon. LSU
has a lot of money. This is what people I
(18:12):
don't think.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
I understand.
Speaker 8 (18:13):
It's a little bit more quiet than other places around
the country, but they've got those billionaires down there. Trust me,
and they've got a lot of resources and money will
not be the reason that they miss on a coach here.
But what they should be thinking about is what we
were just talking about, which is fit. Who's the best
fit for LSU, because if you get the fit right,
that's a place that can win the national championship.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
So two games this weekend are fascinating. If UFC loses
it in Nebraska and Vanderbilt beats Texas, Sark and Lincoln
Riley are going to get major heat. Now. Sark's got
a bit of a pass because arch Manning Hurt may
not play right. I saw some Sark rumors come out
about the NFL. I had said this two months ago, like,
(18:53):
I think he's the best candidate out there from the
college game, is Sark. But I think Texas is arguably
the best job. So I would stay in Austin. But
let's just let's just look ahead. And I know I
always talk to USC, But last time you were on
you said it's better now, and I said, okay. The
offense was good four years ago. The offense was smart
(19:14):
and clever, and quarterback play was good. They were very
good at home four years ago, and they can't win
games on the road, and they're a much better program.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
That's so surfaces.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Maybe I'm surface, I'm in television. Maybe it's the makeup
in me. Maybe if they lose to Nebraska, would you
acknowledge is it's not better than three years ago? Yes?
Speaker 8 (19:36):
Yes, this is a great litmus test of I guess
our positions on this. You talked about like the offense
being clever and creative, that's because they had to be
because they weren't balanced. Now they're balanced and against the
teams that they can retain that balance, they are very
good now.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
Was Illinois a good matchup for them? No? Notre Dame.
Speaker 8 (19:59):
No, And that's why they need to continue to get better.
I believe they're on the trajectory towards getting better in
those areas, to be better at the line of scrimmage.
But what's different now is that they will and are
committed to running the football and they should be able
to run it against Nebraska. Nebraska's ranked fifteenth in the
Big Ten stop in the run, and if you allow
Lincoln Riley and jade My Ava to have a run game,
(20:22):
they will pick you apart. This is why it's different now,
and it's much more sustainable. The one worry would be like,
is there defense going to be able to stop the
run of Nebraska. I think Nebraska's okay running the football.
They'll certainly try to test the interior of that defensive line.
But this has much more sustainability, and the trajectory for
USC is a lot more positive now than it was
(20:43):
even when they had Kleb Williams, because with Kayleb Williams,
it was smoking mirrors, Colin. It was all surface, it
was lipstick, it was vanity. Now there's some substance there
because of the balance that they play with on the
offensive side, and if they retain that against Nebraska, they'll
win this weekend. There's not a doubt in my mind.
In fact, I would take them and give the six
and a half because I don't think Nebraska stops the run.
(21:05):
And there's no way that USC is going to score
under thirty five points if they're balanced, And if you're
telling me Dylan RelA is going to score thirty or
more points against USC, I would. I just don't think
that that's going to take place. So I watched last week.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
I watched Alabama and South Carolina play, and though it
was an a losing cause. I think I draft the
South Carolina quarterback first because I see juice. I've always
said that's about quarterback play. When I watch a college guy,
you got to give me one wow trait. I've got
to go wow. No, So South Carolina Rocket, you're wrong again,
(21:41):
You're wrong again. Ty Simpson has no juice. He's doing
no juice. Watch his intermediate throws. Watch him control the
game from the pocket, Colin, Colin, he is just who
wins super Bowls. Guys that control the game from the pocket.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
All the game.
Speaker 8 (22:00):
Now, you have to do those things first. See this is,
this is, this is, and I bring this up all
the time.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
This is math.
Speaker 8 (22:07):
You gotta have algebra one under your belt before you
can go to algebra two and then calculus and to
all that. You got to bake the cake first before
you put frosting on it.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
You you want to go and you want to put
the wedding topper on it and get all the frivolous
frosting on the cake, But you got to understand you've got.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
To make the cake first.
Speaker 8 (22:24):
And listen, Sellers is a terrific player, and he'll certainly
be thought of highly in the NFL draft. I think
he's going to be a top ten pick. I'm not
saying that he's bad, but I'm just saying if you
compare their games, the game that Ty Simpson plays directly
correlates to the National Football League. He will go in
and he will have success. He is a bow Knicks
(22:44):
or a Joe Burrow style of guy that can go
in there and make those throws right away with anticipation
and accuracy. I would also put another guy in there.
Fernando Mendoza is going to have a ton of success
in the NFL because of what he does from a
foundational standpoint, his accurate see, his anticipation, his intellect. Sellers
is a wonderful player. But you take a look around
(23:06):
the NFL at all these places that draft traits at
quarterback versus drafting quarterbacks, and it never ends up well
for them. They're turning over offensive coordinators, they're turning over
head coaches. It never really works. Maybe that guy will
succeed down the road, but to me, the first pick
in the draft is going to become a discussion between
Mendoza at Indiana and ty Simpson at Alabama. Sellers is wonderful,
(23:32):
but he doesn't control the game from the pocket like
those two do. If you look at the last you know,
ever since Tom Brady won his Super Bowl. You look
at the quarterbacks that win the Super Bowl, look at
their college careers, look at the style that they play,
look at what they do, their experience. They have over
thirty starts combined. You know, I think the average number
(23:53):
of starts for the guys that have won Super Bowl
since the early two thousands is like twenty nine and
a half is the average number of starts in college.
So you're looking for an experienced guy you can go
out there control it from the pocket. So that that's
what I would say about that. I mean, look at
the trade. You keep wanting to draft Kayleb Williams, and
then now you bag on Kayleb Williams and you're all
over Ben Johnson.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
Well, no, I like I like Drake May and Jaden
Daniels and Bownicks. I liked all of them. I thought
all of those guys could control the game from the pocket. Yeah,
I like Jayden daniels movement, I like bo Nick's athletic ability.
I actually like Drake May's athletic But those are pluses.
Those are like the that's the frosting. It's like great.
Speaker 8 (24:34):
Now, now you tell me you got a cake and
now you can put some frosting on it.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
Now I'm in Let me ask you.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
If Ohio State, so Michigan wins the Natty, then Ohio
State wins the Natty. If Ohio State and their defense
is clearly the best in the country, yeah, if Ohio
State or Indiana wins the National Championship, what does it
say about the Big Ten SEC comp What does it say?
Speaker 8 (24:59):
You know, I get this question a lot, and I
think that it boils down to this. I think at
the top end the Big Ten has the best teams
in college football, Indiana and Ohio State, you know, kind
of leading the track there as far as depth goes.
In the middle of the conference, you can make an
argument that the SEC is better. Now, I do think
(25:21):
that some of those teams get overvalued as compared to
the top middle of the Big Ten. For instance, these
four teams I feel like do not get the love
that they should Iowa, Washington, Michigan, and USC. Those teams
are better than the AP would suggest, They're better than
the narrative would suggest than the other network would certainly suggest,
(25:43):
but the middle of the SEC is is very good
and very deep, and it makes it incredibly difficult to
go out there and win every single week. What I
start getting frustrated with in this whole conversation is that
you go in overtime if you're Texas against Kentucky and
Mississippi State, and you're sitting there and it's like, on
a second, you can't just tell me that every win
in that conference because it's on the road, is a
(26:04):
quality win, and Texas all of a sudden retains their position,
even moves up in the Apeopole. Meanwhile, Iowa is playing
great football. They were just tied with Indiana in the
last two minutes of their game in kinnick a couple
of weeks ago, a few weeks ago, thirteen thirteen. And
Iowa can't get ranked. So that's where the perception maybe
is a little off top into the Big ten, better
(26:26):
middle of the SEC, better deeper, And that's both of
those things can be true.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
You know, it's interesting because of Phil Knight's money. I
wouldn't leave Oregon for LSU, even though I think LSU
is a better job. I wouldn't leave Ole Miss for
Florida there's way more pressure, and I think you can
have a team that's almost as talent rich as long
as you have one or two nil guys. I wouldn't leave.
There's only about four programs. I would never leave Ohio State.
(26:55):
I would never leave. I don't think there's a better
job than Texas. If I got LSU rolling, I wouldn't leave.
Same with Georgia.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Fama.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
What do you do if you're Lane Kiffin? Because you
could get Florida or LSU. What do you do if
you're Lane Kiffin? He's still young, he's reinvented himself. Ole
Miss is a very good job. It's not a great job. No,
it's a very good job. I would stay because I
think he's viewed as the architect of the next ten years,
and he's bounced around a lot, and I think for
his personality and what he's done, it's a neat fit.
(27:31):
Would you leave? Would you leave if you were Laying?
Speaker 8 (27:35):
I mean LSU is intriguing, right. I just think like
LSU is a step above. I think that you have
to overachieve at ole Miss. You've got to do things
that the program has never done to reach your ultimate
goals and to win at the top end of college
football in a lot of respects. You know, the best
years of Ole Miss football at least in recent vintage
(27:56):
or what we're seeing right now.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
And does he want better than that?
Speaker 8 (28:02):
You know, and go to LSU, and we know that
LSU can go and put together rosters year in and
year out that compete at the top end not only
the SEC, but also of the country and win a
national championship. I do think it comes down to resources.
And like I said, I think that LSU has top
two or three resources financially in college football. I know
(28:24):
a couple of their boosters. They have deep, deep pockets,
and in this day and age, that's what you have
to have. That's why Dan Lanning loves Oregon. That in
a few other things. I think Dan Lanning and his
family love Eugene. You know, Dan told me one time,
He's like, you know what's kind of nice is I
can go to dinner in Eugene and you can't go
(28:44):
to dinner. I mean, that's something I know that resonates,
you know, calling with you is like the quality of
life in Eugene is very good. And it's not like
he's not able to build a team that can go
and perform at the top end of college football and
maybe even win the national championship.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
Heck, they might win the national championship this year.
Speaker 8 (29:01):
Yeah, I mean, we don't even you know, we need
to see how that team continues to develop and play
in this month of November, although they're November is going
to be pretty difficult for them. So I don't think
Dan Lanning will leave, but I think Lane will. I
think Lane is. If I had to bet Lane Kiffin
is your next coach at LSU, Wow, that's powerful. That'd
(29:24):
be an interesting watch, wouldn't it would be? Do you say, hey,
let me throw this out there. I know it's just
a conjecture. I think Sark works in the NFL. I
think he does. Yeah, so you said listen. Obviously he's
coached there and done it successfully. When he was a
coordinator at Atlanta, he was great. Ryan Day would be
another guys as NFL background. Remember he was on a
(29:46):
couple of Chips staffs at San Francisco and in Philadelphia.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
How about this argument that Texas is a great job,
but the best jobs in the world. Texas is arguably
the best college job, but the best jobs in the
world at football our NFL jobs, when you have solid
ownership and a star quarterback, your assist your assistance don't
leave because NFL pays more and the pensions are great
for coaches, so you can maintain a staff. You may lose,
(30:12):
you know, McVeigh, may lose an offensive guy once in
a while, but you can maintain a lot of your staff.
And if you've got a Bob Kraft, if you've got
a cron Key, or you've got solid ownership Steve Bushetti,
You're not gonna have a lot of turnover. I mean,
I could see Sark going and just saying, if you
you know, like Hardball left for Herbert, that was a
smart move. I could see Sark going if they blew
(30:35):
out Sean McDermott lose his first round of the playoffs,
I would leave Texas for Buffalo and Josh Allen.
Speaker 8 (30:42):
Right, I mean, I understand, I understand that it's certainly
I maybe more attractive, more comfortable. To your point, it's
not going to be a money issue. I will say,
there's two things, and I understand I live in the
college football space, but there's two things specifically that are
(31:04):
different at the college level that are not an option
at the NFL level, not an option. Number one is
that you could impact these kids' lives to a greater degree. Sure,
so you can influence these guys, and if that's something
that drives you and you're passionate about, then college is
the place for you.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
I think that you would agree with that.
Speaker 5 (31:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (31:25):
The next thing is is that in college you are
the quarterback. Bill Belichick is revered and considered one of
the great coaches in the history of the NFL. And
yet when we think about the Patriots in their run,
who do we bring up first?
Speaker 4 (31:42):
Yeah, Brady, Tom Brady.
Speaker 8 (31:44):
When you think of Nick Saban's run at Alabama, revered
greatest coach in the history at college football, who do
you think of first? When I say Alabama Saban, Nick Saban.
You see, your legend status is not really available in
the NFL. I think they view that as more career things.
Even with Andy Reid. Andy Reid, when he finally retires, Yes,
(32:07):
he's gonna be in the Hall of Fame. They might
even put a statue of him up outside of Arrowhead.
What are people gonna say, though, Well, he didn't win
it without Patrick Mahomes. You see, at college you can
be a legend. If Ryan Day wins multiple championships at
Ohio State for the rest of his life and beyond
into the ages, he will always go down with Woody
(32:29):
Hayes as the only two guys that won multiple championships
at Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Oh think about this. Think about how many great players
U c l A had. It's the John Wooden era.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
That's right, that's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Al Thinder and Bill Walton and like two of the two,
maybe the two best college players ever. Look at Shryzewski
and Duke. I was just gonna say, coach j Duke.
And so it comes down to the two eyes.
Speaker 8 (32:52):
Influence over kids and immortality that those are two things
that you don't get at the NFL level. Now, they
might leave, but it would be for comfort. It would
be for Josh Allen. That's more comfortable, you know, that's
more stable. I don't have to deal with all of
this stuff. But if you want influence and you want immortality,
you stay in college. Yeah, I mean, I think Yukon basketball.
I think Jim Calhoun and Hurley.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
There you go, and they've had sixty NBA players maybe, Yeah,
good stuff, Klatt, what a finish strong I really appreciate that.
I didn't like your quarterback take, but everything else was
pretty good.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
I love it. I love it. Great to see you,
my man.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
Have a good day, all right, Joel Klapp's doing the
Penn State Ohio State game this weekend. No, that's a
good point. You can affect people's lives and you're you know,
you're more of the legend.
