Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowver
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
All Right, it is a Friday. Let's wrap up the
week with a strong one. The Blazing Five off another
winning week in one hour from now. Like the numbers,
Jmax likes the Dogs this week, I'm going with some
flavor favorites. Great to be here, so, I mean, I know,

(00:52):
the Bucks and the Falcons not that fascinating, But there's
a bigger picture here that I'm watching all over. I
saw it Michigan and I'm seeing it all over the NFL.
So I love the fact, first of all, that Todd
Bowles ripped the players after the game. Sometimes it's the
player's fault. You can't lose a game when the other
team has nineteen penalties like Atlanta did and you lost brutal. Now,

(01:16):
I'm not sure Todd Bowles is a great head coach.
He's a great defensive coordinator. So got fired with the Jets.
They've lost five to six, third straight season in Tampa
where they start strong and they fade fast. So I
don't know if he's a great coach. But the Baker
Mayfield component here is interesting. So Baker lost two great
offensive coordinators last couple of years, Liam Cohen. He's in

(01:39):
first place with the Jags, and Dave Canalis first place
with the Panthers. So Baker's always been a great comeback story.
But Baker Mayfield is one in nine in primetime games.
He's not Mahomes Allen, He's not Stafford, He's not that
kind of talent. He's very dependent on his coordinator. And
what did Tampa do when they lost Liam? You know

(02:02):
what I don't like. They hired a guy who was
in house. Now the offense stinks. Baker didn't get worse.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
They added.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
In Muka, the receiver from my Ohio state. They should
be a better offense, Muka, they should be a better offense.
They're worse, far worse. What did the Eagles do when
they lost Kellen Moore? They hired in house. The Eagles
offense broken What did the Lions do when Ben Johnson left?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Well, let's just hire the guy down the hall.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Lions offense is not the same Tampa Bay did it,
Michigan football. Let's replace hardball with a guy down two
doors down in the facility stop.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
The NFL is.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Too big of a business to hire proximity. Sometimes it works,
But if you lose Ben Johnson, if you're losing Liam
Cohen and Dave Canals who are head coaches? Is the
guy you give the job to, the in house guy?
Is he going to be an.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
NFL head coach someday?

Speaker 1 (03:03):
So Baker, last year top five red zone offense in
the NFL. Now they're twenty second. How they added a
great wide receiver. Last year, they were first in the
league on third downs, Now they're eighteenth. Everything has dropped
off a mat. They were a top five offense last year,
they had a star receiver out of Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
And now they're a bottom feeder.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
So I know everybody thinks I'm crazy on this offensive
defensive coach. I think you should hire offensive coaches. I
think there are exceptions, and I don't know if Todd
Bowle is a great coach. The problem being if you
hire an offensive coach and he does nail it with
the OC.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
The OC within the year.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Two leaves, then you've got to nail it again. And
Todd Bowles went, oh, he nailed it again. And then
that guy leads who's going to go three for three
on hiring brilliant offensive coordinators?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
So Shanahan, Andy.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Reid McVeigh, Shan Payton, they don't have to worry about that.
As offensive coaches. They know the scheme their offense guys.
So that's the danger and a defensive head coach. I
like Baker, but Baker's not a great quarterback. He gets hot,
he's a streaky quarterback, but he is very reliant on
a sharp young coordinator. The Eagles did it, The Buccaneers

(04:17):
have done it, the Lions did it. Michigan football had
a whole different issues there, but Michigan football did it.
The greater the candidate who leaves, the greater the candidate
you've got to replace, the wider the search has to be.
The NFL is a massive business. The guy down the

(04:39):
hallway is not the best candidate ninety nine percent of
the times. Here's a very angry Todd Bowles after.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
It's an excuse the book. You don't make excuses. We
you got to care enough the where it hurts. You
got to care enough where it hurts means something to you.
It's more than a jobs livelihood. How well do you
know your job? How well can you do your job?

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Well?

Speaker 4 (05:07):
You can't sugarcoat that. It was inexcusable and he has
no answer for it. That's for no excuse for it.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
And that's what you tell him a lot mirror.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Can you imagine an NBA coach doing that? Uh So,
sometimes it is on the players. So now I see
a headline this morning, Well, Todd Bowles, he is officially
on the hot seat, and maybe he should be. Can
I offer another GM and a coach who could be?

(05:39):
It's up in Buffalo. Buffalo is playing the Patriots this weekend.
Let's say the Patriots beat the Bills again this season
and at the very brisk business by the way, heard Harold,
the headline is Patriots clinched division in Vrabel's first year,

(06:02):
MVP Allen falls short again. How's that gonna play in Buffalo? Okay,
how's that gonna play? Worst receiving room in the league
for a star quarterback? Matt Stafford has Sean McVay has
an array of weapons, Devonte Adams and Pooka. By the way,
you could have traded for Devonte Adams, he was on

(06:24):
the market. Greg cosel Truthbaum yesterday on our show about
the Bills current roster.

Speaker 6 (06:33):
You'd be hard pressed to name an impact player that
they have on the defensive side of the ball. They
certainly don't have a receiving corps. If we look at
you Kir and say he's their best receiver, he's clearly
a number three type. He's very good at that, but
he's a number three type. So they're really not that
good a football team. And I know that there's been
a lot to talk about, well, this is Josh Allen

(06:54):
geer and if he doesn't make it, you know that
is so silly. They're just not that good overall from
a perspective.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Last week, Josh Allen completed twenty two passes. Fifteen were
to tight ends and running backs. It's the weakest wide
receiver room in the league. And the general manager Brandon
Bean when he was called out by local media instead
of owning it because this is an awful receiving room.

(07:22):
They don't have a number one or number two. Brandon
Bean went after the local Buffalo radio hosts.

Speaker 7 (07:29):
You guys were bitching in twenty eighteen about Josh Allen.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
You guys wanted Josh Rosen, and now you guys are
bitching that we don't have a receiver.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
I don't get it.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
You got to have a show and you got to
have something to bitch about.

Speaker 7 (07:40):
But bitching about wide receiver is one of the dumbest
arguments I've heard.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Really, worst receiving room in the league.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Josh Allen's the quarterback, best deep ball thrower in the league.
By the way, Brandon Bean brought back twenty of twenty
two starters.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
He thinks this group's good. They're not.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
They've got a hand full of really good players. At
the trade deadline. By the way, Jacoby Myers was available,
they talked to him, didn't land him. You know where
he went Jacksonville three straight games with a touchdown. Jacoby Myers,
Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean both they need to win
and they are favored, and they may match up very

(08:19):
well with the Patriots, but they have the world's best
football player at the most important position. I had Mark
Slaret on this week and I asked Mark, I said,
you know you've been around the Bills, and his quote was,
I was thoroughly unimpressed with Buffalo as a football team,
blown away by their quarterback, unimpressed with everything else. Greg

(08:41):
Cosel watches the film, you watch the games. I do too,
So Todd Bowles may not be a head coach, and
I think Sean McDermott is more than capable. And Brandon
Bean has hit on some really good players. But when
he's barking at local radio hosts, my take his last
week is a prime example of why this team feels

(09:02):
out of the Super Bowl bubble. Twenty two completions fifteen
to tight ends and running backs. The local radio guys
probably right. Jacoby Myers on the market, Davonte Adams again,
I'm watching the Rams go out lan Nate Lanman, Davonte Adams,
Emmanuel Forbes and nail every draft pick defensively for three years.

(09:27):
I just don't think Buffalo's that good. And what if
New England in Mike Vrabel's first year and the kid
quarterback Drake may sweep him in Vrabel's first year, Maybe
that's not You're not going to pull the trigger like
Todd bole's getting fired after the season. I think this
game is huge for the GM and the head coach

(09:50):
because Buffalo's got the owner. He's a good owner, new stadium,
star quarterback, everything else to me on the table, all right,
j Mac blazing five in one hour. A lot of
interesting stuff today.

Speaker 8 (10:05):
Yeah, I'm just looking at this Bill's Patriots game. Interesting.
Sounds like you like the Patriots too, Buffalo.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
I think a rested team at home that does pretty
much everything well against a Buffalo team with a superstar
quarterback who's now turning the ball over, has no deep threat.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
I think I get the better coach in New England.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
I like home, better coach, well rested, healthier and oh,
by the way, doesn't really have a bad unit.

Speaker 8 (10:42):
That's fair. I'm looking at the last meeting. So Buffalo
fumbled inside their own twenty, handing.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
The Patriots points. They did that last week too, Josh.

Speaker 8 (10:49):
Allen interception in the red zone of Josh Allen fumble
near midfield. Like they made a lot of mistakes, eleven penalties,
weren't really buttoned up early in the season.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
I think we get a max effort the Bills. Oh
I do too.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
I'm just saying if they lose, that is a bad
Monday in Buffalo.

Speaker 8 (11:05):
Oh yeah, I think you're spot on McDermott. They want
to find a real estate.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
I got nothing against the general manager, but it's like,
you can't have the best quarterback in the league and
be awful at receiver.

Speaker 8 (11:18):
Well, you know Baltimore is dealing with that too, right
they Flowers is better, even better than anything anything Buffalo happened.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
But you know, Kinkate is good, Knocks is good. I
like them both.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
But Dalton kidd game got hurt earlier this year, and
the offense is like, really, it's like you can't reel because.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
A tight end.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
By the way, the Rams have four tight ends. They
can all play.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yeah four.

Speaker 8 (11:38):
When do we have a reckoning with quarterback salaries because
Josh Allen salary is it's onerous, Like, I mean, I
don't know how you build a team.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
I'm not saying it's I'm not saying it's not harder,
but it seems to me the Rams hit on all
their draft picks. Therefore they can go get Devonte Adams
and steal Nate Landman. I mean, Howie Roseman stole the
linebacker last year, became a bowler. You gotta find some
value on the market. I keep saying this. I never
understood whether Patriots like go with Jacoby Myers. I don't

(12:07):
get what the Raiders did. He goes to Jackson. He's
a touchdown machine.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
They think he's a problem in the locker room. I
don't know think that's the case. Trevor Lawrence loves him.
I mean he throw to him all the time. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:17):

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Let's blaze it up up. It's Colin Blazing fuck Ravens
and Bengals, folks.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Joe Burrow's won eight of his last nine starts. I
like the Bengals as a dog at home getting points.
They've played the fourth hardest schedule and they've gone toe
to toe. They should have eaten Buffalo last week. They've
scored thirty plus points in three straight games with Burrow.
The defense now is not great, but seven takeaways in
three games. They're playing with a lot of energy. They're

(13:26):
playing with a lot of pride and Joe Burrow, folks.
Last year he was arguably, when healthy, the best quarterback
in the league. In Lamar Jackson Struggling Ravens zero and
four against the spread in the last month, they're averaging
in the last month twenty points a game. I think
the Bengals at home as a dog is a sharp bet.

(13:47):
Twenty seven twenty four Cincinnati beats the stumbling raven Lions
in Rams. Rams minus five and a half is to play.
My favorite bet just playoff spot with a win. So
it matters a lot for the Rams, and they've won
seven of eight games, many comfortably. They have the fewest

(14:08):
offensive mistakes in the league. They don't get penalized, they
don't get sacked, they don't give the ball away. And
now they're at home against the Lions team searching for
an offensive identity, the Lions averaging thirteen points a game
in their three road losses. This is two teams that
feel like one's totally in rhythm. One is out of

(14:29):
rhythm right now, Jared Goff is facing a thirty eight
percent pressure rate. They can't pick up first downs on
third or fourth. Matt Stafford at home this year has
been unbelievable. He's got time to throw. I think the
Rams win and the Rams cover. Final score thirty three,
twenty six.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Panthers at Saints.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
I like the Panthers minus two and a half is
a road favorite. They come off extra rest with an
offensive coach, and I think they're just a better team
than the Saints. They're five and one when they score
at least twenty points. This year, again they beat the Rams.
This team's got a pretty high ceiling. Most improved defense
thanks to good drafting in the NFL this year. They

(15:14):
were a wreck defensively last year, averaging thirty one a game. Defensively,
they gave up thirty points down to twenty two. Saints
are in a letdown spot. They come off a big
win feeling themselves against Tampa, but Bryce Young's last three games.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
I like them.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
By the way, the saintem It held under twenty points
in seven of eight games. This is an easy one
big quarterback coach advantage right now.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
The defense playing well.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
I'm gonna take the Panthers to win and to cover
thirty twenty three.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Packers at Broncos.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
I like green Bay minus two and a half, throwing
a four game winning streak. They finally got those wide
receivers healthy. They've been the second best offense in the league.
Have the on the road. They're four to one and
one on the road. Christian Watson five touchdowns last four games.
They are really in sync offensively. The Broncos are a
bit overvalued because they've had the second easiest schedule in

(16:14):
the league. They have trailed has Denver in twelve to
thirteen games, and Denver plays close five straight one score games.
Jordan Love on the road this year, I like him
in this spot. Denver may have the better defense, but
I'm not even sure about that. I'm gonna take green
Bay minus the points to win and cover twenty eight

(16:37):
twenty four Colt said, Seahawks take the under forty two
and a half, two run heavy teams. It will be
a fast game. Seattle big game coming up. They want
to get out of this thing healthy. They're not gonna
put Darnold in harm's way. They're gonna run the ball
and that's all the Colts can do. With forty four

(16:59):
year old Philip Rivers as a likely starting quarterback, back
to back games, the Seahawks have held people under ten points. Offensively,
they have the highest rushing versentis The Colts offense the
last three games has disappeared, So they don't want Philip
Rivers throwing that thing thirty times.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
The Cults are going to run it.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
The Seahawks want to keep Darnold healthy for the last
stretch of the season in the playoffs. Seattle knows they're
going to win it over under is forty two and
a half. I think the Seahawks blow them out thirty
to six. But I think Seattle wants to get out
of this game. It's been a weird wild weather week,

(17:38):
flooding all over Seattle. They want to get in run
the ball, stay healthy, get ready for the big games
coming up against the Rams. So there's my blazing five
jmax An any thoughts on it?

Speaker 8 (17:51):
Absolutely terrifying how much I love these I've already bet three,
actually four, I bet the under in Seahawks Colts. So
I'm with you on that, but I just can't get
there with the Bengals. Looks like t Higgins today. They're
saying no practice concussion that was clear in the Buffalo game.
I don't think he's gonna play, but it may not matter.
Baltimore seems broken at this point. Do you see Lamar

(18:12):
getting a little surprised to hear he only has one
carry of over twenty yards since the first week.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
He's like, we've been saying, really ye Lamar. Carson Palmer,
by the way, the coach at Santa Mayor Margarite High
School here in southern California. One last week dominant win
will now play Juggernaut Dalya Salfa the state title. So
former quarterback Carson Palmer is now fledgling superstar coach Carson

(18:42):
Palmer and he's joining us live here. Good coaching's hard,
So congratulations to you. I'll circle back on that. So
part of being quarterback is being and this is a
weird thing to say, but kind of being obsessed, like
Brady was kind of obsessed by it, like it is
your life training in the off season, working with people. Well,
maybe it's not that healthy, but that's just part of

(19:02):
the job. So I want to play a brief bite
from Joe Burrow this week and just your interpretation of
what he's going through.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Here's the sound.

Speaker 7 (19:11):
You know, if I want to I want to keep
doing this, I have to have fun doing it.

Speaker 5 (19:19):
You know, I've been through a lot, and if it's
not fun, then one am I doing it for.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
Eight of his last nine starts, which I always thought
was fun. How does that land for you, Carson?

Speaker 5 (19:30):
He just looks frustrated.

Speaker 7 (19:31):
You know, it's been an up and down progression to
get to this point for him playing for the Bengals,
a lot of injuries, a lot of surgeries, a lot
of frustrations. There's been some peaks, but there's definitely been
some valleys, and so I just think you see a
guy that he's wearing his frustration on his sleeve right now.
It's obviously been a frustrating year for him to get

(19:53):
hurt early and now come back and they have to
basically for the most part, went out or have an
incredible run here to get into the playoffs. So I
just think you're seeing the guy that's just frustrated. Unfortunately.
You know, he did that on that stage in front
of all those cameras and people, and now we're all
talking about it.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
But I think that's what we're all seeing right now.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yeah, you can only go through rehabs so many times.
It beats you down a little bit mentally. Philip Rivers
forty four, Now he knows, he knows this group. He
knows Shane Steichen that was his quarterback coach with the Chargers.
So he's a stiking guy and he played for the
Colts forty four years old. My first reaction was, well,

(20:33):
he's a big, thick guy, so if he gets it,
he can handle it. But it's like it's a little terrifying.
I mean, you tell me it, forty four? Could you
have just decided I want to go play? What do
you make of this?

Speaker 7 (20:47):
I can't wait to watch it. You know, I'm us
old guys. We're always pulling for the old guys. Old
guys rule, right, So I hope it goes great. I
can't imagine it will, just because there is rust, no
matter how incredible of a quarterback he's been throughout his
playing days, which he's been phenomenal, and I've always been
a huge fan of his. You know, when you take

(21:07):
five years off and you're coaching high school ball and
you come back into it, whether you're throwing every day
with the youngsters or not, there's a different pace, there's
a different speed. Those windows close really really quickly. But
I'm pulling for him, and the good news is he's
got a great defense, a phenomenal running game, a really
good offensive line, so you.

Speaker 5 (21:26):
Know, the things he needs around him are there.

Speaker 7 (21:29):
But at the end of the day, when you're forty four,
it just feels a little bit different when you're peeling
yourself up off that turt.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
and noon Easter not a Empacific.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
So Caleb Williams is interesting. I've been saying, if you
like Caleb, you gotta like Bo Nicks. They're both uneven,
They're both very good in the fourth quarter. They have
great offensive coaches, excellent o lines, nice weapons, and defenses
that are playmaking defenses. People seem to like Caleb more
than Ball. Whatever does it bother you. I talked to

(22:02):
Brady about this yesterday. Does it bother you that Caleb's
a like at fifty eight percent completion percentage that I
wouldn't want my backup to be there? And then I
think to myself, he's so dynamic, I get so much
more with him. I can probably live with it for
a while. How it does it bother you? Is that
a concern that like, that's I always thought sixty one

(22:24):
percent that was the line you had to get above that.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
That was kind of arbitrary. What do you make of
his struggles accurate accuracy wise?

Speaker 7 (22:33):
It doesn't bother me. I mean, his youth is is
why it doesn't bother me. He's still young, he still
has years. He is so good outside the pocket and
so dynamic, as good as anybody I feel like I've
seen outside the pocket. The problem is, at some point
he's going to have a hamstring, especially in these games
in December and into January, you're going to have, you know,

(22:55):
an ankle and knee, a hit flexer, something that limits
you outside thee And at the end of the day,
this game and the playoffs is won.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
Being able to stand.

Speaker 7 (23:04):
In the pocket, throw the ball, accurately decisively downfield while
you're getting hit in the face, and he just hasn't
quite you know, found that rhythm.

Speaker 8 (23:13):
Yet.

Speaker 5 (23:14):
I love the head coach.

Speaker 7 (23:15):
There, being offensive minded guy, you know, having that around him,
you expect to see him in these next couple of
years get better. But he's got to get better inside
the pocket. There's no doubt about it. It doesn't bother
me because he is so young and he's so dynamic
outside the pocket, but there's going to be that point
in the year where he's got to win inside the
pocket and he's got to be accurate with it. And

(23:36):
I don't know that he's there yet, but I'm not.
I definitely wouldn't give up on him. I just want
to see some improvement and we all want to see
that inside the pocket accuracy.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
Was so I was saying this, when you pay a
quarterback with Buffalo's pan Josh Allen or Kansas City's pay Mahomes.
The Rams got a very team friendly deal on Stafford,
so they can go out and get a DeVante Adams.
But I always think it's tough because, especially in a
sport where you get tackled, I don't want to take
money off the table if I was Josh Allen, like,
you've earned it.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
You're great. You're the one thing I love about the team.

Speaker 1 (24:07):
But there is no question Carson, if you take a
little less and you can go get an elite slot
corner and a really really nice right tackle, you're a
better football team. And so I look at Mahomes, who's
now making probably fifty to one hundred million a year
in endorsements. How do you feel about that position about
You know, taking less absolutely benefits the roster. Brady and

(24:32):
Breeze at the end of their career could have made
more money. But you are a pro athlete. The billionaire's
not taking a pay cut. You know, GM's not taking it.
The coach isn't taken it. How does it land for
you as a former pro athlete when we know it's discussed, Well,
we'd be way better with a team friendly deal.

Speaker 5 (24:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (24:51):
I think at the end of the day, you can
take less and take some money off the table if
you trust the organization to use that money wisely.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
It's great to get all the money you can get
as a player.

Speaker 7 (25:03):
If you don't trust the people upstairs that are pulling
all the strings behind, you know, behind everything that's going
on with salary cap and free agency and drafting the
right guys.

Speaker 5 (25:13):
If you trust those.

Speaker 7 (25:14):
Guys around you, then you don't have to factor in
the size of your market, because if you're in the
market of la or Dallas or New York, there's plenty
of money to be made outside of your contract from
the organization. If you're at Kansas City or a Buffalo,
you really need to trust what's going on and how
that money is being used, and know and be confident

(25:35):
that that money is being used wisely, the money that
you're not accepting as a player, and assuming that the
team's going to use and spend wisely. If you believe
in them and you trust them, and they have a
great track record and they've done that around you, then
I think it's a no brainer. But if you don't
have complete trust and faith in the organization that they're

(25:55):
going to do right with a sary cap around you,
then you know, I'm not surprised when I see guys
take as much money as possible in their next contracts.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
So usc You're Alma Mater had the number one recruiting class,
it's an ni L world. Payers get played, players get
paid there's free agency. The transfer portal, I think it's made.
Indiana now is a powerhouse because they have a couple
of rich boosters. Vanderbilt, which is a very heady school,
is now going out and getting five star quarterbacks. USC

(26:27):
I think I think there's a little trap in the NIL.
You can overpay for people. I think USC's kind of
got the right GM now when you look at college
football and the world you lived in and what's happening
now with ni L, the playoff, the transfer portal, are
you comfortable with it? How does how does it work
for you now?

Speaker 7 (26:49):
I think we're all kind of lost and waiting on
the next set of rules or guidelines on how this
thing shakes out. But I'm excited to see we've got
three Santa Margarita kids. Yeah, Samote Katuwanga, Jaden Crowder, Trent
Moseley all going to SC next year, and you know,
most likely I expect those guys to have impacts on that.

Speaker 5 (27:10):
Program right away.

Speaker 7 (27:11):
They're incredible players, but they've really focused on California, you know,
being in a huge market, having the tradition, having the
success that s SEE has had for generations. I think
that is a big piece of a pie, and I
love that they're they're attacking southern California and really going
after California. I think this is the mecca of high

(27:34):
school football. So they've really zeroed in on recruiting these kids,
and they've got the boosters, they've got the big money
guys to be able to land the number one class
because they combined that rich tradition and history of the
school and the program with the right amount of nil
packages for these young men. So I'm really happy and
excited to see sc success on the recruiting trail this year,

(27:56):
and they've.

Speaker 5 (27:57):
Done a phenomenal job.

Speaker 7 (27:58):
Chat about in the general manager you mentioned has done
a tremendous job really focusing on southern California. Like I said,
we've got three kids going there and I wouldn't be
surprised if we have more in the future.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
So I want to close with this.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
We have seen three teams, the Eagles, the Lions, and
the Buccaneers were great offensively, they lost excellent coordinators. The
head coaching jobs all those coaches are crushing and instead
of a big global search, they just hired guys in
house because it was comfortable. And I said to me,
this year feels like the year identifying coordinator value. We

(28:36):
always look at the head coach in the quarterback. It's like,
no coordinators really important in this league. Philadelphia's rostered, Detroit's roster,
Tampa Bay, those are good rosters.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
Those are great.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
Quarterbacks, and they've fallen off a cliff and you, as
an offensive guy, have your team in the state final.
And I've said the rules now benefit so greatly offense
that even if you get a great defensive head coach
in the NFL, he's going to keep losing coordinators. He
has to hit on coordinator after coordinator, because if you're hot,

(29:07):
you leave. Todd Bowles hit on the first two, may
not have hit on the third. Tell me, as a
former quarterback, the advantages you have perhaps over a defensive
minded coach on the old line on the quarterback relationship,
because it does feel like to me these offensive coaches
Sean Payton now is on fire and Andy Reid has

(29:29):
run the league. Belichick felt a little outdated.

Speaker 3 (29:32):
In the end.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Do you believe in your career and your world and
your your history the value of the offensive coach with
the rule changes, it is now a touchdown a game
advantage to guys like you who just know that side better.

Speaker 7 (29:47):
Well, there's no doubt the NFL the way they've protected
the quarterback and protected defenseless receivers.

Speaker 5 (29:53):
They are focused on high scoring games at the.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
End of the day.

Speaker 7 (29:57):
The fan base, the highlight reels, all the social media,
it's a lot of the time about explosive plays, big plays,
spectacular plays. Say Kwon Barkley hurdling a guy and doing
a three sixty in the air. I mean, that is
what the NFL has pushed. Again, they've really protected the
quarterback position and now the receiver position. So if you know,

(30:19):
at the end of the day, if you've got a
coordinator that can align the run game with the play
action game and the deep shot game, also get the
ball out quick, also run the ball, especially down in
the red zone, that's you know, that's a recipe for success.
The hard thing to do is to find coordinators, like
you're saying, there's a lot of really good coordinators that

(30:39):
really understand pass protection of the run game and have
somebody to help supplement the pass game stuff and vice versa.
Some guys that really understand the back end of the
defense and how to attack them in the passing game,
but don't really quite understand how to align their run
game with the play action game. And finding somebody that
is the complete package and total package is a challenge.
I think, like you just mentioned, seeing it all over

(31:01):
the place, like quarterbacks, those kinds of coordinators are really
hard to find.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Congratulations Santa Margarita. Playing Dayla Salle for the state championship
first year as a coach. What will be your takeaway
beyond winning.

Speaker 5 (31:18):
Just how hard it is.

Speaker 7 (31:19):
It doesn't matter if it's high school, junior, Pop, Warner
Pee Week, College, NFL. It is a challenge. It's incredible.
It's been an incredible run for us. We've got a
phenomenal staff ourselves, we've got great kids, we've got the
support from the school, so this has been the complete package.

Speaker 5 (31:38):
But it's hard.

Speaker 7 (31:39):
It's hard if you've got good players. It's hard if
you've got good coaches. Trying to mix it all together
and find those right recipes is a challenge. But it's
a blast, and I'm really excited. We're playing, like you said,
against an incredible program in Dayla sal They've been great
for decades, so it's a tremendous matchup for us and
a great opportunity for our players to shine on the

(31:59):
biggest stage.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Carson Palmer as always good, Senior.

Speaker 5 (32:02):
Thanks thanks going you bet, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (32:06):
It is it is.

Speaker 1 (32:07):
I watched Baker Mayfield last night and my take is
they hit on back to back great coordinators. Doesn't mean
the current guy doesn't know what he's doing. But man,
when you lose Liam Cohen and Jacksonville and Dave Canalis
and Ben Johnson, these guys are elite.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
They are a plus guys. It's you.

Speaker 1 (32:25):
I've always said this that if you lose Jim Harbaugh,
don't go down the hallway. You've got to get on
the phone with Jimmy Sexton. You've got to go hire
the best coach in the country available. I'll defend Alabama
Greg Byrn. You lose Nick Saban, you can't do better.
They didn't go down the hallway. They went all the
way to Seattle, three thousand miles away to get Kaylen
Debor And you say, well, he struggled. You don't even

(32:48):
understand how good Kaylen de Boor is. Bama is not
what they were six years by the way, Nicks. Last year,
Nick Saban, they didn't look the same. Remember when Nick
said started kind of complaining about the nil. Why because
he faced sark in Texas twice and Texas had the
better players. Because Texas money's much bigger than Alabama money.

(33:10):
So Calin de Borr is not going to become Nick Saban.

Speaker 3 (33:13):
Can you win a.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
Natty every fourth year? That's the reality of the NIL.
I mean you're seeing it right now, Indiana. Just bet
Ohio State this idea of running the table and winning
every year.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
Two three, that is a total outlier.

Speaker 8 (33:27):
Now when it comes to this Tampa stuff losing these coaches, Colin,
this is why you hire an offensive head coach, because
you get the defensive guy.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
If he has a good offensive mind, he's stolen to
be a head coach. Student.

Speaker 8 (33:38):
So next month we're going to do this cycle because
I see Diana, Russini and Brear everybody talking about, oh,
all these coaches who are going to get interviews, and
it's a lot of defensive guys. Just I know that's
one of your big things, Like you don't hire a
defensive head coach. Jesse Minter is great, but if you
hire him and he gets a good offensive mind, that
guy's gone in years.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
We'll think about this.

Speaker 1 (33:56):
Caleb Williams got a defensive coach disaster, Jade and Daniels
got one. We all loved it. Year two, what are they? Yeah,
bo Nicks just keeps getting better.

Speaker 8 (34:07):
Yeah, and I don't.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
The problem is I don't want to go Pennix and
Raheem Morris defensive coach looks like am As.

Speaker 3 (34:13):
By the way, is Raheem Morris Todd Wolves? Are they
coaches next year? I don't.

Speaker 8 (34:16):
That's why all these Browns fans who want to run
offs at Fanski. Be very careful, be careful. The grass
isn't always greener as they like to say.

Speaker 3 (34:23):
What if?

Speaker 1 (34:24):
I mean, I'm telling you Caleb against Shaduer, I like
the Bears, this whole Shitar Sanders thing.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
I know, it's only three starts. He got nothing to
work with.

Speaker 1 (34:33):
It was the Titans, it was Tier. He went toe
to toe with cam Ward and was way more productive.

Speaker 8 (34:39):
Yeah, Kim Ward's on like an interim coach. Mike McCoy like.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
I'm not, I'm not poo pooing Shad. I had a
really good game. He looked good.

Speaker 8 (34:48):
He looked as good as he has all seasons.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
Yeah, I mean, I just it's fascinating that the NFL
trying to send a message let Shador Sanders drop to
the fifth round. Cleveland may have found himself a gem.
I'm gonna zip.

Speaker 8 (35:02):
It, Locket, put it right in my pocket, as I
told like my five year old back in the day.
