I S Chris Mannix. That was my moments now with interviews,
(01:04):
analysis and everything going on in the world of boxing.
When you have talent, you are given another chance. Here's
Chris Mannix. So I've seen some bad takes in my lifetime.
This one might be the worst UH boxing scene dot
com headline Sergio Mora backs Canello to win, but doesn't
(01:29):
rule out upset by No. Think it sounded worse. What
is that? But if you read it, it was actually
great article written. It's just it's a terrible title. Terrible title,
great article. Could you straddle defense anymore? No, that's what
I look, I mean what I said. They just wrote
it wrong. The title was totally wrong, but the article
is great, all right. Sergio Mora is here, former junior
(01:51):
middleweight champion, the Zone Broadcaster contender winner about a hundred
years ago. How we're gonna get into the heavyweight division today?
From Deontay Wild is formally announced. Return to Andy Ruiz's
fight to the rebuilding of Anthony Joshua Lost. Like some
of your questions you submitted on social media later in
the show, Andy Ruise will be here. He's back in
(02:12):
action against Louis Ortiz this weekend, and Nick Young remember him.
The former NBA guard is joining the boxing ranks, taking
on Rapper blue Face on the Social Gloves card in
l A on September ten. Sergio Mora, I know you
are excited about that. Look, unless I'm gonna face one
of these guys, I'll get excited other than that clown
(02:32):
show continues going from town to town. You just walked
in and sets. You worked ten rounds today, I did.
I hit the back ten rounds. I felt great. But
of course the punch back doesn't punge back. Correct. All right,
let's start with Deontay Wilder. I was at the press
conference in New York to announce Deontay Wilder against Robert Hollannius.
Jonty Wilder and Robert Helenius weren't there because Helennius is
(02:55):
still having visa issues and Wilder missed his flight, but
both of them spoke, um, while there's interesting. Sergio's gonna
be thirty seven years old in October, and during his
press conference, he made it pretty clear that for a
long time, after the loss to Tyson Fury last year,
he wasn't really into coming back to boxing. He had
(03:17):
to kind of be pushed into it in a way,
you know, when Tuscaloosa gave him a statue, he said
that appealed to him. But he's coming back and he's
facing Robert Lenny. So what are your expectations? What should
be expectations for Deontay Wilder in this second tour of
duty in boxing? You know, Uh, there's the same you
(03:40):
talk about Alabama, there's the same down south. He thinks
who he is, you know, and that's wilder right there.
He thinks who he is. He believes he's the hardest puncher,
baddest man on the planet. And he came a long way.
Mannix for starting boxing. Late bronze medalist at the Olympics,
he was a heavyweight champion, one of the hardest punchers
in the history of boxing. He gave a long way
(04:01):
with with limited ability. The only thing he really has
is a big right hand. Other than that, he doesn't
have much. He's not much. He's not a smart jabber.
He doesn't have any upper body movement or defense. He
doesn't have any footwork. But you can out box him
for eleven and a half rounds. He catches one right hand,
it's over. So he came a long way, uh with
(04:21):
with his ability, but even a long way from Alabama,
from from where he came from, you know, I mean,
he made millions of dollars, life changing money generations from
now to come. He has a statue in his hometown. Dude,
that's a long way with limited ability. This is a
success story. So whatever this man says whatever he says,
he's gonna do. Guess what, you gotta believe him because
(04:44):
he's the type of fighter. He's the type of man
that he thinks who he is. Okay, I would have
believed that before the Fury trilogy because before that, sur Jo,
he was hungry. And you know that as well, anyone
what it means to be hungry, Like you were hungry
coming up the ranks. You had to fight for little money.
You had to get on the contender, get the exposure,
(05:06):
get the forest fight, do all the things that you
have to do when you're a young fighter and you
have something to prove. As you said, he has nothing
to prove anymore. He's already won in boxing and in life.
He's financially set for life. He still lives in Alabama,
like you get a lot of money for your buck
in Alabama. So he doesn't have anything left really to
gain in the sport. And that's my question, Surgery. What
(05:29):
happens when a fighter doesn't have the same hunger they
did in the past. It's not the same situation. But
you ever Tyson towards the end, when Tyson would do
these post fight interviews after getting starts by somebody and
they'd be like, you know what, I'm only doing this
for the money. Now. I don't really have the same
passion anymore. That's what worries me about wild And he's
not coming into these fights with the same level of intensity,
(05:49):
the same preparation, the same desire he once did. He's
also not gonna be coming with uh an opponent like
Tyson Fiery he thought the best heavyweight in the world.
That that's very different go to look good against other
than that, he starts to everyone in front of him.
So I think he goes back to his his knockout ways,
get his confidence back, build him back up. He'll get
another title shot because he's popular enough. He's a former
(06:10):
champion and he knocks everyone out, so he's still in attraction.
And that's the reason he's coming back, because he accomplished
so much, and he started late in his career, so
it's not like his body is damaged. He started boxing
and what eighteen years old, you know, so he's his
body affect. His body is fresh man. So I'm with him.
I think he can go a long way, not only
because he started late, but because he has that magic eracer.
(06:32):
He can knock anyone out in front of him. He
doesn't use his legs, he doesn't meet his legs. He
just he can plow plow his way through. Well, you
says he's fresh, and I don't disagree with you there,
But he also just went thirty rounds with Tyson Fury,
the last eighteen of which were absolutely brutal for him.
In the last two fights. I mean that takes something
out of you, too, right, it does. But um, you know,
(06:53):
those are two beatings by one man who actually one
and a half one and a half of a beating,
because that first of all, I was actually actually what
two and a half. The first fight was good competitive,
that's and then the third fight two and a half,
two and a half fights of a beating. Good beatings. Yeah,
but that's by one man. So I think he should
(07:13):
just move on, move on from those beatings, and he
goes back to knocking guys. I'll get that confidence back
every fighter from from Rocky Marciano to Rocky Bell, well
not Rocky Marciano, but Rocky Balboa. He'll come back with
the eye of the tiger, get some knockouts in, get
the popularity back, and he's back. Well, I think he's
got the right opponent in front of him October fifteen.
(07:33):
I mean, Robert Hilennius is the perfect comeback upon. He's
credible because he's got the back to back wins over
Adam Kovnotski, but he's also vulnerable. He's thirty eight years
old and the last few years he's been knocked out
by Gerald Washington, he was knocked out by Johann Duopas.
Deontay Wilder should knock him out if he's anything close
(07:53):
to that. If he's not, we'll learn in that fight.
Look the pathway for a while to have the second
reign that he keeps thinking about is there. Like he
beats Hellennious, there's a chance that a fight against Andy Ruiz,
if Ruise beats Ortiz, is for a vacant title, Like
it's certainly possible if after Fury and Usic do what
(08:14):
they do, that those two guys could fight for a title.
So there's a world championship potentially on the table. And
on paper, I favored Deontay Wilder against Robert Lennius. On paper,
I favored Deontay Wilder against Dandy Ruiz. Like I think
he's still very much able to be a top guy
in the division. He just gotta want it though. I
(08:35):
mean you you gotta, you gotta be able to relate
to that. Like at some point you stopped wanting it
as much as you did early in your career, right, Um,
what you got, you got like satisfied. It was never
it was never an issue about complacence here or or
not being hungry. It was an issue of distractions. And
that hasn't to do with hunger. It just has to
(08:56):
do with with you know, life. You know, you gotta
juggle life outside of boxing, and you know, distraction is
getting the way and this is where mental issues, uh
come around. And we're calling Caesar's Palace right now with distraction.
You know what, Caesar's Palace was a good time. And
what good is? What good is uh getting to the
top of the mountain if you can't enjoy the fruits
(09:16):
of your labor. I would have loved to have known
you back then at the see what you were doing
at that point. Um. No, but listen, I think you're
you're you're right on point with the helleneous fight in
the Andy Ruiz fight. But I'm gonna tell you one thing, man,
Both those fights are gonna be difficult, especially the ruise
fighter ever happens. But Heleneus is gonna give all there
some issues. I'm telling you right now, he's coming off
a really successful one versus a tall fighter. Tall fighters
(09:40):
that are, you know, freaka sheet tall, six ft six plus,
they're not accustomed to fighting another fighter that's six ft
six plus. They're accustomed to having the size advantage. So
whenever you get a big man fighting the big man,
they're not accustomed to it. Kind of like a salt
pod is unfamiliar with fighting another soft pall. It's awkward.
I think Helenieus is gonna have some moments. He might
even and shake up while there. That's gonna be a
(10:01):
better fight than expected. I don't disagree. Um, I just
can't get past how Helenius was stopped by Gerald Washington.
Like I know, Jared Washington man six book six plus,
big right hand. I'm just saying, if if Deonta is Deonta,
he lands that big right hand and puts Helennius out.
So I think we'll learn a lot about Deontay while
they're in that fight. But look, boxing is good, it's
(10:22):
boxing is better with Deontay while they're in and I'm
rooting for him to get back into the mix. All Right,
we mentioned Ruiz a couple of times. He's back this
weekend facing Louis Ortiz Fox Sports pay per View. Are good, pal,
Brian Kenny back in the boxing mix? Shout out b K,
b K. You're still scared to be ka miss him?
Terrified of him? Um, this feels very winn or go
(10:44):
homesh to me. Sergio Ortiz, it definitely is, because I mean,
he's officially in his early forties, God knows how old
he actually is, and Aye Ruiz while younger and having
the ability to come back if he drops a fight
to Luis Ortiz, after having not fought since May when
(11:04):
he beat Chris Areola, and before that, having not fought
since December of two thousand nineteen, it feels like he's done,
at least as a top fighter. Is this feel like
a winner go home fight to you? Every fight is
a winner go home. So that's just the wrong way
to phrase it. It's not. I don't know, it's not
because it's it's every fight is is make or break.
(11:25):
Every fight. You're you're one punch away from retiring from
getting hurt. From from a lot of bad things happening,
so you're one fight away from going retiring, going home,
or getting being up. So every fight is important. But
for Andy Ruiz, I don't think it's win or go home.
I think it's win and go back to undercards and
build your way back up and see if you have
the hunger to get back to the main event and
get back to the heavyweight championships. So I don't think
(11:46):
it's go home. I just think it's getting relegated. So
there that that's all it is. Now when it comes
to Luis Ortiz, it's win or retire. How old is Louise?
You know what Louise Ortiz reminds me of that that
barber shot scene in in Coming to America when they're
talking about Joe Louis, Joe Lewis was seventy five years old.
Seventies six years old. That's that's our tis right there.
(12:08):
No one knows who he is. And these fighters from
from Cuba, you know, they can't provide their real certificate,
officially listed as forty three years old. And I'm very
skeptical as well. So look, I don't believe have you
seen some of the memes of uh Ortiz out there,
like next to Jack Johnson like stuff like that. He's
next to Methuselah somewhere there. It's definitely when I go
(12:31):
home for Ortizes winter retired. Forget. That's what I'm saying.
But like Andy Ruiz is thirty two years old, it's
just gonna be You're right, he would have to go
back to undercards. It used to be real tough for
him to to climb back up the ranks, though, isn't.
I mean, he's it's just tough to do that. I
don't think it's gonna be tough for him to climb
the ranks. It's it's whether whether he wants to climb
up the ranks. I mean, he's already made tens of
(12:51):
millions of dollars, you know, so it's all good. He's
gonna be just fine, uh if he if he wants
to make more our money, that's all it's gonna be about.
If the opportunities to make money are there, the hunger
is gonna be there whether he's making money or not.
Because he's a fighter, he doesn't want to get beat
up or lose bad. But if the money's there, I
(13:12):
think he's gonna be just fine. I still want to
see Andy Ruise against Anthony against Dianti Wilder. That's a
great fight, man, that that would be a huge fight.
Pay per view would do great numbers. You could put
that fight in in l A, in Las Vegas, you
can put that fight in Madison Square Garden. No matter
where you put that fight in the United States, It's
gonna be a marketable, profitable fight between two polar opposites
(13:36):
and two two different backings, two different uh genres of fans.
Great fight. I would love to see that fight. Are
you kidding me? Mexican Rocky versus a bronze bomber. The
promotion alone in that fight will be great. Yeah, amazing.
I hope it happened. So he's got to get past
Ortiz first. Who do you favor in that fight? Uh? No?
I like Andy Ruise the fast hands. I'm always gonna
(13:58):
favor speed over power or size, and he always has
some of the fastest hands at heavyweight. He has a chin.
So even if Ortez lands that big right hand like
he like he lands on many of his opponents. Did
you did you have question? You saw against Sarreola? He
got knocked down in the second round, like it was
a kind of a flash I took a shot with
a flash knocker. He wasn't hurt. I mean you could
(14:18):
see that his eyes were there. He got back right.
It was more he was more embarrassed and cheapest from
getting up and now he wasn't hurt. He takes a
big punch, man, I mean, look at the punches that
I agree with you there, those are huge flush This
guy got up like like Superman. I think I think
Andrew is gonna be careful in this fight. I don't
think he's gonna come in there and try to brawl
with voice or tease. I think he's gonna try to
(14:39):
box him, use his hand speed. It is interesting though,
he's now when his third trainer, like he had obviously
many Roblis for a long time, um that he went
to Eddie Renosso and now he's left Atie renass So.
His reasoning is very similar to what Ryan Garcia said,
like Eddie Renasso doesn't really have time or didn't have
time to train him in the way he needed to
be trained for this by Is that a concern for
(15:01):
you being in your third trainer and three fights. Who's
he with now? He is with, Uh, what is it? Ohsuna?
I want to say, I can look it up. You go.
If you don't remember his name, yes, I'm concerned. It's well,
it's it's not a big name. I'll tell you what
it comes down to it Alfredo was Sona. Never heard
of him? Who has he trained? I don't know? Yeah. Um,
your MSR never leave your trainer worship at the Altera Campos.
(15:24):
I'll go back to him when it's time for Jake
Paul to kick my ass. Listen, if you ever interview
and have the great Sinista Strada on your show, so
she'll tell you the exact same thing. Dean compos is
the most underrated great trainer in boxing. Um, but look, uh,
I don't know, man, it's it's it's it's it's a
triggy triggy slope. Yeah. Well, we'll see what happens. Good
(15:46):
fight this weekend on Fox Sports pay per view. UM,
let's talk about Anthony Joshua. Eddie Hearn has been talking
about Joshua entering the rebuilding phase of his career, which
is supposedly gonna begin in late December or early January.
What's the rebuilding phase look like for Anthony Joshua. What
should it look like? Eddie Hearn's talking about like a
world tour now, um, you know, going from the UK
(16:10):
to China back to the US. He's mentioned names like
Jeng Jually, He's mentioned Dillian White as potential future opponents.
What do you think the rebuilding path is for Anthony
jo when baby get back to winning. This is a
man that was knocking out everyone they put in front
of him. Uh, gold medal. He was the stud He
was in commercials, making millions of dollars, filling out stadiums.
(16:32):
Then he gets upset by Andy Ruiz is fat chubby
Mexican unknown but see Andrui's, by the way, calls himself
a fat chubby Mexican all the time, and he did
it on my interview with me. Listen, when I wasn't boxing,
I was a fat chubby Mexican. So you've weighed the
same thing for like thirty plus pounds win when I
(16:53):
lost my title against four. But that was alcohol and
you took it off within six weeks. It was fine
food and fine wine. It was period alcohol. I didn't
say it was beer. Boogie bro um. What were we
talking about? We're talking about Anthony Joshua Anthony josh Yeah,
So get back to knocking people out, man, I'll get
back to feeling good in front of people again, the
(17:15):
bright lights, the stadiums. You know, no matter no matter
where he goes, he's still gonna be popular. He's still
gonna be that pretty boy that can knock people out.
All they all they need to do is put the
right opponent in front of him. The last thing you
want to do. Look, I understand that Andy Rui's fight
because he got upset by an unknown two weeks before
the fighter. How many weeks before the fighting? Two or
three weeks? It was six weeks? It was when when
(17:36):
Miller got tested positive five six weeks. It was still
a short period time, short period of time, last minute replacements.
I've been there before, they throw you off psychologically. Okay,
that one we could sweep under the rug. He got
his title back. Usick wasn't not a mistake. He will
never beat Usi ten out of ten times. That was
just bad matchmaking. They should have never put him up
against Musick. Uh. Joshua should have avoided Usick like Canello
(17:58):
avoided Eddie Zombie Lara for oh long. He didn't have
to fight him. A lot of people didn't avoid Laura.
They only got to fight him. Avoids maybe the wrong word,
but he didn't want to fight him. They fought him
right after Mayweather, two fights after, but Laura was calling
him out way before that. You want to didn't have
to ye, And look what happened. He almost lost and
(18:18):
there was for a good reason, you know. So I
just think that's what That's exactly what should have happened
with Usik. Joshua should not have fought us us would
make anybody look bad. I don't care who they put
in front of him. It could be King Kong and
you'll find a way to make him look bad. That's
just how brilliant of a boxer he is, especially a heavyweight,
where heavyweights don't have that footwork, They don't know how
to cut off the ring, they don't know how to
(18:39):
fight like smaller men, you know. So Usi is gonna
give be a headache for any fighter because it's just
that damn good and the fact that he's has that
Olympic gold medal, you know, the past, and the fact
that he's a South Pall, the fact that he comes
from that that Ukrainian school of of of mentally strong
and physically in shape, and their scientific way too much
(19:00):
of a headache, just wrong matchmaking. They should have just
avoided him, like the plague or after that one lost
everybody to be avoid You want to avoid everybody because
that's how you. That's how you maintain a career, man,
that's how you. It's longevity over over fighting everyone they
put in front of you. This is a career. This
is uh. This is a man that that became a
heavyweight champion, made millions of dollars. They gave him a chance.
(19:24):
He cleaned out the cruiserweight division and he still wasn't
making the money he's making now because Joshua gave him
that opportunity. Now is the man, you know, the heavyweight champion,
he's the he's the man now. But it was because
Joshua gave him an opportunity. I just I just think
looking back in retrospect, you know they should have just
avoided him right back to the path though back because
that's said and done. I think in December January, you
(19:46):
fight whatever stumble bum you can put in front of him.
I mean, like, let's dust off Dave Allen for a fight,
like that. What's Junior fob doing right now? Let's get
him in the ring with Anthony josh like anybody that
he can go step in front of and blast out
of there. And then I like the idea of a
Dillion White fight next year. I mean, Dillian White is
kind of on. That's why he's on that same level
(20:06):
of kind of being not washed, but like he's That's
kind of why I wouldn't because of the It's still
a sellable fight in the UK. That's a huge stadium fight,
make a lot of money off that. Why wouldn't you want?
You know, Dillian White's always fun to watch and they
hate each other. He's always fun to watch. He could
be marketable. He has the name recognition. The only thing
he doesn't bring to the table is eight He's never
(20:27):
won a world championship, so he'll he'll be beating a contender,
so he just doesn't have that. But you're not at
the championship level with Joshua at this point. I mean,
the the titles won't be resolved until the middle of
next year. I get it, But you still want to
be facing another former champion. I mean you want to
call he had the interim title for a man half
wit whatever I mean, But you're not looking for a
(20:48):
title right now if you're Joshua. But the White fight
is a mass. Here here's the path. What I would
do if I was Eddie Hehrm, I'd pick Dave Allen
type in December, I do Dillion White in the first
quarter of I would then do hope that Gen Jualais
beats Derek, which he would in a fight, and I
would do Jen Jalis versus Anthony Joshua in Beijing, Foreign
(21:09):
Macau whatever. The most money usually despise the thing that
spews out of your mouth when it comes to matchmaking
and promotions. But that's dude. You you hit three for
three right there. I love all three of those, uh,
And in that step, that's a progression. They're popular, they're marketable.
I love all three. And then you get into the
title picture once again. Maybe while they're still out there.
I'm telling you why the versus Joshua is still incredibly marketable. Man.
(21:31):
They can continue losing, They're always gonna be marketable. They're
gonna be the version of Ricardo Mayorga. And for non
the argains, I hope they're better than that. But at
least so old their first five pay per view, they've
sold their rematching pay per view. They were both washed
and they still filled out Commune to stadium. They were
a little bit out of my my age group, but
(21:52):
bargains of ma Yorga right Nowlatoya, they were just a
little out of my age group. But yeah, I would
love to have bottom still be a good fight. This
past weekend we saw two young heavyweights in action on
the top rank card. Jared Anderson first fight and I
believe eight months, ten months something like that he had
been dealing with an injury issue. And Richard Torres uh
(22:12):
which George Jr. Should say, the x US Olympian fighting
in I believe his third professional fight. Top ranks high
on both these guys. Um, they're both getting a lot
of work, on a lot of TV exposure. Of those
two in terms of brighter, bigger, upside, brighter future. Who
do you like? Uh? Well, am I speaking like a
promoter and a manager. I speaking like speaking like Sergio
(22:34):
Mora because you said who's more marketable? Right? Who like?
If you can said marketable? Asking was a better fighter? Okay?
Hold on, all right, so let's do it this way.
Latin Snake Promotions, that now defunct company that you still
have a check in your wallet carrying around from corporation
Snake Promotions. Uh. If you were running Lack Snake Promotions
(22:56):
and you were picking a fighter of those two, and
you could choose being the one of them, who would
you take? It's an scorpa. That's how I write off.
That's how it is. That's how I write off a
lot of my drinking and dinners laundry. I'm gonna go
richer towards Junior Mana. Yeah, you know why Because One,
he's an Olympian, so Olympians always have an easier way
to the top. Two, he's Latino in a heavyweight division
(23:19):
that's unheard of. Look, if I'm gonna go just on ABC,
who I think has the better talent? I think it's Anderson.
I watched him fight twelve and no twelve knockouts. Who
doesn't like power, who doesn't like ability? Yeah, he's from Ohio,
I believe. So you know that he grew up boxing
some of the best fighters and amateurs. But tours one
what a silver medal? Yeah? And Olympian, but he's short.
(23:42):
He's not gonna make it as a heavyweight. See that's
it's not gonna make it as a heavyweight, but he's
gonna sell he there's really no option's two hundred twenty
ish pounds, so he's a heavyweight unless you want to
go on the bridgtweight division. Try to win a title there.
I think that's the best bet for Room right, instead
of him, instead of him getting knocked out by a
big heavyweight six ft six plus, how about just win
that bridget weight championship. Consider yourself a legitimate champion, market
(24:04):
yourself yourself with legitimate champion and made up weight class
and only one sanction body. You know, it's a legitimate
championship with sanction and and and the right belts out there.
So yeah, I don't care. It's watered down. It's watered down,
but it's an official water down. It was literally made up.
It's an officials. It's an official division now right, Yeah,
because the WBC created it. Maybe belt like Oscar Revass,
(24:28):
I think the only five years from now, no one's
gonna care about Bridge of Weight being a fake, debunked
u waste station between heavyweight and cruiserweight. No one gonna care.
Cruise ways to be wasted, rich of Torres could be
a pioneer. Why do you like him? Though? I watched
his fights and he's got some power. He fought a
complete stiff in his last time. I like him because
because he was all over the place in his last fight.
(24:50):
He made it everywhere. Not he didn't. I don't care
who he fought. Is the fact that he planted this
guy in his face. It was everywhere. Everyone was talking
about it. That's how you make yourself popular. The fact
that you can build your your your your success of
being an Olympian US Olympian, and the fact that you're
Latino in a division where Latinos aren't aren't aren't that's true.
Like Andy, we're really around man a name for himself,
(25:11):
Mexican Rocky as you hey, I'm the one that gave
gave him the monitor forever. Won credit for that Mexican forever.
And Richard before somewhere, and Richard Torres Jr. I'm gonna
make one up for him if he ever gets to
that point too, because he'll be popular. I like Jared Anderson,
more skilled, stronger. I think he's got a bigger upside
(25:31):
than Tours for the same reason you just said. Like
Tours I think a little bit too small. He's like,
what six three twenty ish pounds, you know, thirty years
and somebody said to me, replied to me on Twitter, like, well,
SI is only that big bus special Like you can
be six three to twenty if you're alexand Usk and
you have the talent level that just don't think Torres
he's good. Anderson is a huge puncher, a big guy
(25:53):
with the six six big guy, big puncher, charismatic two.
So I think he's gonna have a lot of six
ass His top rank builds his profile. I think. I mean,
they'll never fight each other, because why would you put
prospects like that against each other? But I think Anderson
Anderson two was gonna be on that Tafi Mo Lopez
show in December, so he's gonna get a big pop
fighting after the Heisman ceremony. If Anderson continues knocking out
(26:15):
everyone they put in front of him, he's gonna make
a name for himself really quick. The reason Tours is
already making a name for himself because that knockout and
the fact that he's an Olympian, and the fact that
you know, he's a Latino in a division where there's
no latinos, so that's always gonna be a marketing push there.
But overall, yes, I agree with you. Anderson has the
(26:35):
better tools. He has the size of a heavyweight, and
he has more longevity and more money to make in
the heavyweight division because he's gonna last longer, He's gonna
be able to fight with the big boys. You know,
Touris looks like Miles Teller and Top Gun two. Didn't
you watch Top Gun two? Why? Because I'm I don't
like remakes that are It's not a remake. It's a
(26:56):
sequel Top Gun sequel Part one with Tom Cruise, Yes,
Part two as Tom Cruise. Yes, Ice Man's also went
Part two. I like the originals. Man, Okay, this is
not a remake. It's not you know, point break the
oldest Tom Cruise. He's probably older. He might be the
same age. Um. Last thing for you before we get
to some questions, Uh, Devin Haney is having himself a
(27:18):
day or a week on social media. He's been pushing
back or clapping back, and everyone's saying he's not doesn't
belong on the pound for pound list, even when at
our pal Dougie Fisher over at ring magazine. Is that
if you don't like the Ring magazine. For context, here
this all kicks started when Devin Haney read the Ring
pound for pound rankings and he wasn't in it, uh
(27:40):
and he said, I'm not going to fight with the
ring belt. Dougie Fisher said send it back, and then
became a back and forth between those two. I mean,
I like Devin Haney a lot. I know you do too.
I think he's got pound for pound talent. But you
don't get on a pound for pound list by beating
one guy, and you can't claim you've cleaned out the
division when you beat one guy to get all those belts.
I mean, look, he did the right thing fighting cambosis.
(28:03):
He got a paycheck, you'll get another one in October
when he goes back to Australia. But to me, to
get on a pound for pound list, you've got to
beat uh Vassilio Machenko. You've got to beat Tank Davis,
You've got to beat Ryan Garcia. You need two or
three quality wins to get on that list. And people
have said, well Loma Chenko lost the Tafemo has got
a whole bunch of good wins. The resumes just don't compare.
(28:24):
Loma Chenko's resume is just a lot better right now
than Devin Haynes. He's got a talent for it in
my mind, but I don't think he's quite there yet.
So basically, you're asking me a question when you already
answered yourself. I answered, I went first this time? Man?
That is who? Who? Who does that? Who asked the question?
And you answered? And what am I here for? What's that?
(28:44):
I don't know what hetorical question? I just answered the
question first. Soliloquy, it's not soliloquy. Would you stop saying
soliloquy on his own? You say that all the time.
This is every time. I love the sound of your voice.
What am I here for? If you're not? You're asking
a question and you answer it? All right. Here's the question, Sergio,
is does Devin Handy belong on the pound for pound list?
(29:07):
I'm with you, know I agree. And here's the reason
why I'm gonna give you some facts though, just the
reason the fact that I don't. I don't think she
course Stevenson is top ten either. I think I think
they're eleven and twelve. And here I'm gonna make my point.
Mannix seniority. Hear me out, seniority man. You know that
(29:28):
everyone in the top ten is over thirty years old,
except in a way it was twenty nine all every
other night. I already looked it up. So they're all
over thirty. You know why, seniority, because that matters the
fact that how not only your accomplishments, but who knows
you how long did it take you to get there?
That seniority, man, it exists in jobs and careers, and
it exists in boxing. Devin Handy's not top ten Core
(29:51):
is not top ten in my book because of that,
not because they didn't accomplish anything. I mean, who do
you take off Josh Taylor? Look at who who he
fought in his last five fights, undefeated fighters. Josh Taylor
belongs on that list. Absolutely. I don't take him out.
I don't take out I took Bevil off. If anyone's
gonna come off as people, but people just big beat
the number one fighter in the world. So no, I'm
not gonna take him off. So their number eleven, number twelve,
(30:14):
and they have to understand that they got a lifetime
to catch up there twenty three years old. Let these
big dogs that are thirty plus finish their career. I
think the questions questions are more of the back end
of the pound for pound right So, like looking at
the ring list right now, they've got Bevil at seven,
Josh Taylor at eight, Jamal Charlotte at nine. Better be
at ten. I think Charlotte belongs. I think Josh Taylor belongs.
I don't put Bevil on there yet, and I don't
(30:35):
put better Bef on there yet. I think both those
guys need one champion knock out ratio. Okay, but beast
all right, Devin so Virgil Ortiz has a hund percent
knockout ratio. Devin Haney's a pound for pound or is
the UNDERSTAN team I'm not a champion yet, better be
of his unified champion with the other one. I'm saying,
Devin Haney is hundred and thirty five pound on disputed.
So you say he should be on the list or no,
(30:57):
he shouldn't. He's right outside of it eleven or twelve,
like I said, because I'm not gonna take out Josh Taylor,
I'm not going to take out Evil, and I'm not
going to take off who was the other one that
you said? Uh? And I certainly is not. I'm not
gonna take out better be if that'll probably my number ten. Yeah, um,
I guess what he's what thirty seven years old? Seniority Mannix.
(31:20):
It matters. It does matter because year old. All right,
let's jump into some of these Instagram questions that we
got for this. Um let's start with Mike well, thank
Davis fight a top fifteen guy in December? Am I
getting paid overtime for? Yes? You are? What was the question? Well,
what will tank Tank Davis fight a top fifteen guy
(31:43):
in December? That's what schul not. Come on, man, Thank
Davis is already who he is? There there, there there.
They're promoting them to make money, not promoting them to
be great, and you gotta appreciate that. As a businessman,
you gotta pre shape the fact that this kid doesn't
mind making millions of dollars fighting you know, people that
(32:03):
aren't in the championship level. He's knocking them out. He's popular,
he's a millionaire, and maywhere the promotion is is. You
know they're going in the right direction. Okay, you don't
as a fan. As a fan, I hate when you
do this. I hate when you divide yourself into three
parts like fan boxer promoter, like just be yourself answer
the question. I am being myself and I said, no,
(32:24):
he's not gonna he's gonna fight it. Well, I don't think.
I think looks Cruise fights this weekend. Certainly possibly fights
the suck Cruise in a rematch that nobody really wants
to see. Um, I don't know who else is out
there between hundred and thirty hundred forty pounds for him,
Like it's not a big section of weight classes for PBC,
and it's just a bad look. Like the Ryan Garcia
negotiates their dead They've moved on. Ryan's moved on, everybody's
(32:46):
moved on. I don't I don't believe that fighting. And
that's the reason people get upset with Garcia because they
think that he cries wolf a lot. You know the fact,
what do you do your tank Davis, Like he's not
calling anybody out know the fact that that is willing
to fight, thank Davis saying I'll do this, I'll do that,
I'll do that, but then it never happens. It's not
his fault. It's not his fault. That is just the
(33:07):
politics and the business of the game. But I love
the fact that that that he's doing that is tank
Davis is not doing it. Thank Davis, not calling anyone out.
He never, he never, he never says I want this man,
I want that one. Devin Hey does Ryan should you
should thank Davis be calling guys. I don't. Yeah, because
you know what, at this point of his of his
of his career, even though everything's going good for him, Uh,
(33:28):
people want more than that. They want a hero, you know,
they want someone to you know, they get it, get
it inspired by. And then he's not inspiring anyone at
this point. He's making a lot of money and and
and selfishly he's doing the right thing. But if you're
in it to be great, then you've got to satisfy
the fans as well. Yeah, I'm with you there. Um
(33:49):
Julio asked what percentage you put on Crawford Spence being
made by the end of the year and why I'm
getting more and more skeptical Sergio as time goes on.
We're recording this. On September one, I checked in with
somebody involved in those talks who said, look, there getting close,
but the stuff that they are stuck on, they're really
(34:12):
stuck on um, and now we're into September. The target
date is November nineteen, So do you think like it's
got to be at least by mid September you have
a deal, right, Like you've got to if you're looking
at it two months. You need a full two month
training camp for a fight like that. To build up
a fight like that, like, you probably got a couple
of weeks of this fight to get made. And I
don't think it does at this point unless something changes.
(34:33):
I think Spence moves on and fights Keith Thurman and
Terence Crawford. I don't know where he goes. So I
hope I'm wrong, because that's one of the biggest fights
you can make in boxing. But you know, here we
are in September, after all the reporting, if they were
getting close, and we're still not ready to say that
fight's gonna happen, I gave up on that fight. I
don't think it happens this year. I just don't think
(34:55):
it happens. I think it never happens. It I don't
know about never. I just doesn't happen this year, And
and Spence moves up probably And it's a shame because
we're not gonna get two of the best fighters in
the world, you know, fight for all the marbles in
their prime. You know one of them is going to
go off off maybe you know, uh, start getting touched up,
lose a fight, then they're gonna come back and fight.
(35:16):
It's not gonna be the same. It's not gonna be
you know, like a Sugar over Lander, Tommy Hearns. You know,
both undefeated welterweight, Beast champions, you know, knocking out you know,
everybody they put in front of you. As far as
the it's not gonna be that. It's not gonna be
a It's not gonna be a Shane Mosey versus Oscar
you know, great fighters and their prime. It's not gonna
(35:37):
be that. So they're already in the thirties, you're in
their thirties. And the fact that you know it's taking
this long, people people get tired of it, tired of it.
I don't want to hear about it. If if that
fight doesn't get made in two months, I give up.
I don't care about that fight anymore. I still care,
but I'm skeptical that ever what happened. Zeke asks, I'll
put this to you because I'm tired of talking about it.
What's next for Demetrius Andreid and do you agree with
(36:00):
his decision to vacate the w b O middleweight strap. Uh?
Andreid needs to fight somebody, um, he needs to actually
if he really really wants to to be relevant against
the big dogs, he needs to take little money for
a big risk, which is a total opposite of what
I've been preaching for twenty years. You want the minimum
(36:21):
risk to make the most amount of money. But no,
not with Andreid. If he really wants to be great,
he has to flip that. You know, he needs to
take one of these big fights. They're not not big fight,
a dangerous fight for a little money, for less money,
just not not even knock him on, just wipe the
floor with him, embarrass a guy like that, move on
to the next one. If he can do something like that,
(36:41):
then I think they're gonna be forced to look his way,
the champions in his way division, Like I think the
Zach Parker fight, which is what they're talking but it's
the right thing to do because it's for that interim
w BO title. That's just another that's just another name
who he should right then. Benevidez at we and take
(37:03):
like a hundred grand wouldn't do that? That's what he
needs to do. What did I just say you would
take a big risk? Would That's how that's if he
wants to become great, if he wants a Canelo fight,
if he wants if he wants a Golfkin fight, that's
what he needs to do. He needs to take a
big risk for a little bit of like a match.
If you had a chance to fight for the undisputed
(37:24):
middleweight championship and you left some money on the table
to do it, loud Bella, if he would have given
me two hundred thousand dollars more, I would have fain.
Taylor would have won. Um last question for you, and
I'm trying to find I just lost it right here?
Is Sergio mad that I'm always mad? Is Sergio mad?
Best man? Would you can I get this out? Please?
(37:46):
Is Sergio mad that Anderson Silva got the Jake Paul
fight and he did not? No, I'm not because Anderson
Silva is a legend and I'm not. You know, I'm
nowhere near. I'm a legend in my own mind. Still,
you know, Spider Spider, Anderson Silva, I don't follow the
m M A, but I follow him. He's a beast,
He's a legend. Him and GSP could have taken the
(38:07):
Jake Paul fight and I wouldn't hate. But I can't
hate on Jake Paul. You that's that's that's mastermind on
his part. He's gonna fight another forty year old someone,
but this time he's gonna get his ass. Whoop? You
think Anderson Silva whips his ass? I think Anderson Silva
embarrassing him. And Silva's claimed to legitimacy as he did,
(38:27):
but shot Chavez? Who should? You're telling me that Jake
Paul is better than Cha was on his worst day.
Chavis Jr. Is better than Jake Paul. Okay, but shop,
that's a tough go of it lately. Like he's had
some I think he had a draw in one or nobody,
a loss against some stumble bum that he lost. But
he's a fighter with over forty five professional fights and
(38:49):
a former champion silver like forty something. Now like I
think Jake Paul beats him. I do. He's just younger, fresher,
uh more polished as a boxer. If you can believe that,
I think he beats him, Anderson and Silver and Luis
Ortiz their aged age there no one knows. Well. Now,
look now you've got ks I in the mix for
(39:10):
you to potentially fight. You've got lots of YouTubers out there, listen,
cass I, Jake, Paul, Logan, Paul. I'll fight all three
of them in one night, just like cas I did
those two bums. I'll fight three of these bums in
the same night, and and I'll commentate the fight before.
How much tape with that take between fights to like
get you ready for that night? Uns today, that's great.
(39:30):
With the punching bag. Wo, the punching bang. Great, that's fantastic.

(41:07):
Andy Ruiz is the former unified heavyweight champion. On Saturday,
he is back when he takes on Luis Ortiz. That's
a fight you can watch on Fox Sports pay per
view and andie first fight in close to twenty months.
So I guess my question is where you been, man
well from the last fight with Chris Sariola had to
(41:29):
get knees surgery, and I took some time off, and
I took into another little bit of time off just
to be with the family, just to relax and you know,
get get get where where I want to be at,
you know. And throughout that time, I was just focusing
on what I want to accomplish, and what do I
want to accomplish. I want to become a two time
heavyweight champion of the world, and that's exactly what we're
(41:51):
aiming for. We had a long training camp. We picked
the hard opponent, Louise ortiz uh Um. Like I said,
I like taking chances. I like hard fights. So that's
exactly what we're gonna get on September four. So when
did that click for you? When did you decide, Look,
I gotta get back in. I gotta try to become
a champ once again. I feel every fighter needs to
(42:14):
have a break. Man. It doesn't matter who you are
or how long you want to become champions. Every fighter
needs a little break for themselves and for the family
because now you you start thinking, you start thinking differently,
you know, and and uh, when was it? Uh of
last year? That's when I said to myself, you know what,
(42:35):
I could do it, man, I did it one time.
I could do it again. I became a champion. I'm
gonna become a champion again. All I'm missing is that
w BC bell that to add to my collection. You know.
So I put myself and and and I said, you
know what, I'm gonna give it all. I God, I'm
still young, I'm I'm not hurt or nothing. So um
(42:57):
and what do you know, I'm aiming for that WBC
about I wanted so bad. I want to become a
two time heavyweight champion of the world. And you know,
and I'm still mad because I gave my belts away
with Anthony Joshua and the rematch because I did not
do the right things that I was supposed to do.
But we're focused now, man. Yeah. Well, you know Anthony
Joshua we all saw back in late August he lost
(43:20):
Dogs and Music for the second time. As someone that
started this run for Anthony Joshua five fights earlier for him.
What were you thinking when you watch Joshua lose again?
She was I kind of knew that musick was in
a win man, just because of his style. He's a
counter puncher. He waits until they load up and then
(43:41):
he goes in there. Um. It was kind of devastating
because I was like, Man, that could have been me,
That could have been me again, So he kind of
gave me more motivation just to to show up and
show out on September four, um here in the Crypto arena,
because like I said, I felt like I gave those
belts away because of my non discipline and but things
(44:05):
changed now, you know. That's why it's good to have
a long layoff to reminiscent to think exactly what you
want to do in life. And I'm still young, and um,
you know, and that's what we're gonna do. We're gonna
conquer and we're gonna get that WBC belt. Do you
think that you changed Anthony Joshua because the numbers Andy suggests,
I mean, they suggest that he has become a much
(44:27):
more cautious fighter in terms of throwing more jabs, not
being as aggressive with power shots since his fight with you.
I think so, Man, And a lot of people have
been telling me, and even in the Ustic fight, Uh,
so many had so many messages on my phone on
Instagram saying like man, Anthony josh was not the same
ever since he fought you. And yeah, he's a little
(44:50):
bit more cautious. He he hesitates too much to to
throw his combinations. But I think he just has trouble
with counterpunchers and um, you know the thing things happened.
But like I said, maybe he needs a break. Maybe
he needs a little layoff where he gets to relax
and not not be too focus on on fights. You know.
(45:11):
I think they have him as like a like he
like he has to fight like a like a slave,
you know. I feel he needs to just relax and
and take time and just focus on on what he
really wants. Yeah, and maybe fight outside the UK. I
think getting away from the hoopla being Anthony Joshua and
(45:32):
Great Britain has probably would be good for him as well. Um,
you are returning in this fight with Alfredo Assuna in
your corner. Last fight you had Eddie renault So. I've
heard you talk about this Andy, about leaving Eddie for
this fight, but I'm still not entirely sure why at
this point, what was the fundamental reason why you made
this change from Eddie Renaulso to Alfredo Assuna. I think
(45:54):
right now he has a lot under his play. You know,
I think, uh Canello has a really big important fight
as well, Triple G and in two weeks. Um, so
I feel it was too close. So I feel I
needed to to get somebody to help me out, to
give me a hundred percent of their time, and um,
you know, especially making my own gym as well. I
(46:16):
didn't make it just for me. I made it for
my fighters as well. Because Canelos gym is private. They
don't want just anybody to go out there and train,
you know. And I respect that, and I respect everything
that they've done for me. And but I'm not saying
that I won't go back or or they wouldn't help
me at all. But I felt like I needed to
make this change for me and for for my team.
(46:37):
You know, it's funny hearing you say that, because it
sounds almost exactly like what Ryan Garcia said a couple
of years ago. Now, there was more more negativity around
that at the time, but he also wanted more attention.
He also wanted his own gym. Does it feel does
it feel like kind of the same thing? Uh? Not really,
because they did give me their time. They did give me. Um,
(47:01):
we we we kind of bonded more, you know, but
it feels, um, I need I needed my fighters as well.
You know, they needed their time too. So that's why
I got Alferro so not to help me and especially
my fighters, uh, because they I'm trying to help them out. Man,
They're they're trying to change their lives as well. Just
like how they gave me the opportunity, I'm trying to
(47:22):
give them the opportunity as well. And being stuck there
and not, um having their their different rules and all
that is, it wasn't gonna it wasn't gonna do nothing
for them. Um. But yeah, they had the time for
me and all that, but I needed I needed to
do what's best for my fighters as well, and that
was opening up a gym, getting a different trainer, and
(47:44):
having them help them out. So your last fight against
Chris Sarreola, give me kind of a letter grade that
you would give yourself in that fight. I think it
was a C minus. I C minus because I've kind
of focused too much Roan loose, same way of trying
to be the part instead of trying to look the part,
(48:05):
instead of being the parts. So I think that was
one of my my downfalls that I did in my
and my last fight. But now I'm I'm at the
same way that I fought Anthony Joshua. I feel good.
I feel explosive, and I feel God made me a
champion being husky and chubby, so white change it. That's
(48:26):
you know, It's funny because your weight has been like
central to any discussion about you your entire career. I mean,
I remember Bob Aram at top rank talking about weight
clauses in your contracts. I mean, as your has your
mindset about your weight and and how much you're worried.
Has that changed in recent in the last year or so, Yeah,
(48:48):
it did now man, Ever since I how I felt
in my last fight. Uh, I felt I gotta get
back to where where I made history, and that's being
chunky boy, just following his dreams and making it, making
it come true, you know. And I feel explosive, I
feel fast, especially I could take punches from bigger guys
(49:10):
have carrying that weight, so I feel it's a it's
advantage of me being husky and um chubby for me
to fight these big guys. I swear I'll give you
like a thousand bucks if you make that your Twitter bio.
A chunky guy following his dream. That's a great that's
a great tag for for So I'm gonna get out
(49:31):
for those thousand dollars then right now? Maybe not? So
you look into this fight with Louis Ortiz, who has
been the boogeyman of the division for a while now,
a little bit demystified after the Wilder Losses got the
win against Charles Martin. I mean, what kind of matchup
is this for you? How tough a fight is this
for you? It's a tough fight, you know, because that's
(49:53):
a he has a different awkward style. You know, he's
not a he's not an awkward style like sick that
lefty that moves around and all that. But he's a
hard hitting guy, and um, a lot of people care
at him. And that's is exactly why we wanted to
pick a good opponent that's gonna be that. This is
what the fans wanted, and this is exactly what I'm
(50:14):
giving them. You know, Um, we know, we knew that
we're gonna take some risks. We know we're gonna it's
gonna be a challenging fight. Uh, I'm up to the
tests and the way that We've been training. I'm confident,
and I'm motivated, and I know I'm gonna get this victory.
So do you look at the pathway to this WBC title.
(50:35):
It starts with Louis Ortiz. Does it continue with Deontay Wilder.
If Wilder can get through his fight in October, it
could happen. You know. Um, First, I gotta focus on
Louise Ortiz win this fight and Deontay Wilder. That's the
easiest fight that could be made right now between me
and him because me and him are both under the
same organizations. So I feel that fact could be easily
(50:59):
made the end of this year at the beginning of
next year. But if I get an opportunity to fight
for the WBC bow or with of course we're gonna
take that. Take that to become a two time heavyweight champion,
no question. Just last thing for you, are are you
curious to see what Wilder has left? I mean, I
was at the press conference in New York this week.
(51:21):
Pollennius a good opponent, but I think a really high
level Deyonta Wilder should win. Are you as someone that
knocked off an undefeated fighter and changed his career? Um?
Are you curious to see what Wilder has left. I do,
and I feel that the whole world does because Um
coming out of his his devastating loss against Tyeston Fury. Um,
(51:43):
we want to see how he how how he comes
back or how if if his legs are still there,
if his if his still state of mind is still there. Um.
You know it's hard. It's hard losing a fighting, having
to get backed up to to have that say, momentum
and having that same um eager to to still become great.
(52:05):
But you know, UM, with with with God, anything that's possible,
and I feel like he's he's going through the right
path and he he he found Jesus and maybe you
know things will go good for him. Well, it's good
to have you back, Andy, first up September four against
Louis Ortiz. Hope to see in some big fights over
this next year or so. Man, Good luck to you,
(52:25):
Thank you man. I appreciate it when we come back.
Former NBA player turned boxer Nick Young all right. Nick
Young is a twelve year NBA veteran. On September ten,
he will make his boxing debut when he takes on
a rapper blue Face at the Social Gloves No More
talk show. That's the Bank of California Stadium in Los Angeles.
(52:48):
And Nick, let's start right here. What the hell are
you doing? Why are you Nick Young doing this? Uh?
What's that started? I went in there with you know,
a good friend of mine, de Meetris, took me to
the boxing gym, and I just fell in love with it.
And then you know, they got to talk in and saying,
(53:09):
I bet you won't get in the ring with somebody.
And then that carried on and carried on, and now
you know, if you look up, you'll be here. So
and once I you know, friendly Nate Roberson, Dann Williams,
I started seeing that its kind of popular. I just
want to try it out well. I want to get
to Nate, who it did not go well for, and
(53:30):
Darren who it did go well for. Also lamar Odim
in that mix, another X laker like yourself. That that's
a work in progress, I guess still. Um, but when
did you pick up boxing and you said you kind
of got the itch after picking it up. When did
the boxing start for you? Uh? Last summer? Last summer.
I just wanted to trying to get like for conditioning.
(53:52):
Uh just trying to stay a little stay in shape
a little bit, you know, with you not doing nothing.
You I didn't want to get at you know, I
still like it looked good at what didn't he? Interestingly?
Last thing? You know what? They left to another. So
tell me how the idea or the uh this, this
(54:14):
concept of fighting blue Face came together? How did you
who was an offered to you? Did you pursue it?
How did all come together? Uh? Well, I was a
little bit of both and started off. Well, there was
you know, me being in the gym. Man they said,
when I fight this dude, when I fight that dude.
You know, my trainer and Demetrius, a manager, was telling me,
(54:37):
what did you fight blue Face? Like, yeah, I fight
blue Face when he fight me? Yeah, you know they
you know what his manager whackman Hunter. I didn't think
it was gonna happy because you know he wait, he wait,
you know a lot less than me. So, and you know,
I think he'll gonna fight somebody a little heather than so.
But you know, to his credit, I'm backing them. So
(55:02):
when when you talk to people you knew in basketball,
ex teammates or whatever, what's their reaction? Because because Nick
I come. I've covered the NBA for twenty years now,
and let me tell you, every time I tell people
that you're doing this, they say Nick Young's doing what
They're brutal. They're brutal, all of them, everybody, all my
ex teammates TVs had you better be training, you bet
(55:24):
that let us down, watch out for this. Why are
you doing this? Come on, Nick, you can't turn into
Nick virus. And I'm like, oh man, say they don't
give me no confidence. You know, they just tell me
they put more pressure on me. For sure. I can't lose.
That's all here. You better lose. Better represent for the A,
B A. Who's uh, who's putting the most pressure on you? Uh?
(55:50):
Once I'll walk up this door. You know, whoever I
see you really like I've read it to Ian Moran
at my school. You know you better thought over heads,
better be practicing. I want you take her to the school.
Can't come back to the school with your kids if
you lose. Like like, it's just it's just whoever I
see that day, really, you know, the Marcus Cousins as
(56:13):
the day Draymond Greenwood was just talking and talking, you know,
So it's just whoever I run into now now Kenyan
Martin and de Marcus Cousins. I could see them getting
in a boxing right, maybe against each other. I could
see them doing it. That would be a good matchup.
That's funny. Yeah, so that you mentioned Nate Robinson and
(56:34):
that's got to be the fear, right, Like Nate got
in with Jake Paul, he got knocked out brutally and
became like a meme for six months, Like like, how
much is that in your mind as you go into this.
That's the that's the tough part because you know they
haven't been the same since, and that's what o my mind. Hey,
he hadn't bounced back and you know, hearing from a
(56:55):
little more, and that's something that stays in the mind.
You know, you don't want to be a meme. You
don't want to be known for I've been playing basketball
all your life and now nats know for the guy
that got knocked out. You know, So I have nothing,
but nobody's saying nothing about the basketball and just talking
(57:19):
about how he got knocked out by Jake. So that's
it's tough. Slam Dunk Champion played like a decade in
the NBA, overcame all things because a size and he's
now the guy that got knocked out by Jake. You're right,
You're right, So that's tough, you know. Uh you know,
I know people have to crank jumps on me, so
I know it would be I'll be right there with him.
(57:40):
So I set myself up with things right there. So
hopefully you know, I'm just don't come out on top though,
you are, you are a target. You're right about that, Nick,
How prepared are you for this? Like? What what kind
of box are we gonna see? Um? You know, I'm
a little more prepared to people think. You know, I
(58:03):
like to move around the ring. You know, I've been
doing this for a while, so I'm not just gonna
come in here man wild and thought wild punches, you know.
So I'm a shock a couple of people basically, you know,
because people just just smiling on the court having a
phone a lot of times. So this is different, you know.
So that's I'm doing this a shock, A little shock,
(58:23):
the shock. Bye, it's more important for me. Do you
have any idea what to expect from Blue Face? Uh? Nah,
you know I've seen him fight, you know. The only
thing I say, he's a little more. Um, he had
a fight already, so you know what this fake walking
into the ring, the environment and all that. So I
(58:45):
think that's probably the only thing that you know, gets
to me. But once I'm in the ring, I don't
want to get hit, So you know that out the
back of my mind. Yeah. You you mean as a
basketball player, you've played in hostile environments, big environments, big moments.
But how do you think you're gonna feel making a
(59:05):
ring walk for your first time? Uh? You know, I
go over into my mind all the time, So I
get nervous now, But just because by myself, you know,
on the court, you know, I've got my teammates. You
can you know, uh, you can hide out a little bit.
You know, bad play here is only gonna get on
(59:26):
not top tier for a day or so, you know,
and it ain't something that's gonna be you know, your legacy.
You know, you got knocked out by this. So but
you know, I think I'm just gonna have fun. You know.
I think you gotta take chances. And that's why, you know,
you never know that you just you know, go through
(59:49):
the fire. So that's what we're doing for. So do
you look at this as a one time thing for
you or if you're successful, would we see you back
future fights? Yeah for sure. Sure, um that's what I'm
doing it for. Uh I wanna see how far I
could go with it. And uh So, if once I
(01:00:10):
win a couple of fights and then I lose down
on the road, you know, it's not as bad it's
mosing your first fight, you know, because I hope. Um, so,
I just gotta get this one out the way. You know,
I might be fighting Darren Williams. So I don't know, Wow,
have you approached Darren. I don't think Darren's all that
(01:00:31):
motivated to fight again. I'm talked to him about this.
I don't think he wants back in. Yeah for sure.
I mean I saw you on social media. You're you're
calling out k s I for Austin McBroom like you're
getting into this man, Like you're you're all in. Yeah,
it's pretty clear. You know, once you get in in
the mixing, you know, you on people's side, You go
(01:00:53):
to people camps, you you know, you interact with you know,
theres the YouTube guys. You know, they really liking they
like boxing, you know what, they really take it serious.
And I have to watch that last fight they hoped
cass I host it was it was pretty good. You know,
it's pretty good. So people that stacked out, So so yeah,
I mean cash Eye is not bad. Like I don't know.
(01:01:16):
I mean, Jake is kind of the top of the
YouTube boxing class, but cass I is starting to show
some things. You know, maybe he could be a little
bit real. Yeah, for sure, for sure. And that's so
fun of it. You know, she's gonna be the key
of the key of the crops. So how much are
you going to weigh on fight night? Oh, fight night? Uh,
(01:01:40):
hopefully I get it between two tee and took fifteen,
so you'll be a heavyweight basically. Yeah, and how you're
gonna outwait blue face pretty significantly, right, Yeah? Yeah, I
think I was seventy five, was seventy, So this is
I mean, that's a pretty big sized disparity. That's why
(01:02:05):
I was shocked. You know. But he's been training, so
he's been talking trash, you know, he's been fighting every
day really in the ring and outside the ring. You know,
So you said you want to see how far you
can take this? Like what does that mean? Like, do
you want to just keep fighting YouTube. Guys, do you
(01:02:27):
eventually want to try your skills against a quote unquote
real fighter. That's the goal, that's the goal. Um, they
get to that, but I don't know because I don't
see myself fighting the heavyweight because they hit harder than
most people. So I'm gonna have to get a little
more weight. I mean, cruiser weights hit pretty hard to Nick.
(01:02:50):
I gotta tell you they can crack. Yeah. Um, so
we talked. We were talking about your your NBA. You
know guys you talked to in the NBA. But like,
is there an NBA player you'd like to get into
the ring someday? Oh? Of course, you know de Low thee. Yeah,
(01:03:15):
that was the easy one. I think that was everyone
was waiting for that one. That's easy level. I don't know,
you know, a couple of my teammates, probably uh, some guys,
little lawyers, some guys in the Lakers, a couple of coaches.
(01:03:40):
Let me, I will tell Luke Walton, get Luke Walton
in the ring. How would that go? I think that's
at the advantage of that. I think, yeah, I think
I will win that one. That the easy first round.
I'll tell you what I think you can make and
I think most people would agree you can make a
lot of money fighting D'Angelo Russell. I think they'd be
(01:04:03):
interested in Los Angeles in that. Well sure, yeah, so
that's that's that's the goal right there. How would have
how will Yeah? Well I doubt it too, But how
would a fight between you and D'Angelo Russell? Go? Oh man?
That that that would be and would be like some
(01:04:26):
White Tyson status? Now how white Tyson for real? First eight?
There's a lot of build up ager you know. So, yeah,
you you've I've seen you in the last couple of years,
still throwing some social media stuff out there. Yeah, d dude,
(01:04:46):
you know what you see stuff? Uh? Last thing I
wanna ask you is you know you mentioned you don't
want to be a meme, but you are the king
of NBA memes already, Like you are still the king
of an be a memes. What is Nick Young's favorite
meme of Nick Young? Oh, I don't know. It's a
(01:05:06):
it's a toss up myself. It's the when I missed
the three and turned around. That's mine. The kids does that?
I think that's the that's you know, that's the kid's favorite.
But like a lot of people know me as the
mean out of face. The that was the question work
(01:05:30):
are you chust work guy? So I get both of them.
So yeah, what what were the miss three? What do
you remember about that moment? And did you think that
was gonna become one of the most iconic memes on Twitter? Oh?
I didn't because well, at the time, shack and shack
(01:05:50):
of the food was pretty hot. He was killing me everybody,
So I knew it was gonna be a shack of
the food. But I'm ready to think about it because
I had it like like three threes at fourhand, so
that's why I was at a moment. But that night
it was just sounded like dang okay, So it was funny.
(01:06:11):
It was funny. I liked it. You know. It's you know,
they say all good press sate all bad press sate fair.
You know. So how often do you still see that
meme pop up on your social media feed? At least
it once a month for sure. I see somebody just
(01:06:31):
said to me, ah a story, end up doing it.
They send me a picture something, you know, so somebody
posts ufing to tag me, So it just at least
wasn't up for sure, and it happened so long ago.
That's the crazy part. Well, Nick, I hope you do
(01:06:53):
not become a meme on September ten. I hope you
have success there, man, because you know, the whole NBA
is watching, like there's a whole league watching to see
what happens to Nick Young. Thank you when we come back.
This week's picks brought to you by Fan Duel. Time
now for this week's picks brought to you by our
(01:07:14):
friends over at fan Duel, and this week I am
locked in on the heavyweight fight between Andy Ruiz and
Louis Ortiz, a true crossroads matchup in Los Angeles on
Saturday night. Now, Aye Ruise has been installed at a
minus four thirty favorite according to fan Duel, and I
like Ortiz to win. Yes, Ortiz has been off for
(01:07:36):
a while, has not fought since May when he beat
Chris Areola. Yes, Andy Ruise will be working with his
third trainer in as many fights now that Eddie Renaults
is not working with him for this fight. And Yes,
Louis Ortiz, even though he didn't look great in his
win over Charles Martin in January, is experienced, is powerful,
(01:07:59):
still has enough opt to knock you out. But I
think Ruise has the chin to stand up to the
best punches of Ortiz, and I think his skill level
at this stage of his career is just higher. So
I think he is the better fighter. I think he
wins his fight. Now. The method of victory is where
you have a chance to make some money. Here, Ruise
by knockout is minus one ten. I don't really get
(01:08:22):
that Ruiz is not this big heavy puncher. Yeah, he
stopped Anthony Joshua, but he hit him perfectly on the
temple to change the course of that fight in the
third round. His more significant fights, I'm thinking of Joseph Parker,
for example, have been decisions and have gone a distance,
and I think this one goes to distance as well,
And that's why you can make some cash if you
(01:08:44):
bet Ruise by decision. Ruise is plus two thirty according
to fan Duel to win by decision. I think that's
the way this goes. I think it goes a lot
like the fight against Chris Areola, where Ruise won a
fairly lopsided decision. I think he wins this fight eight four,
maybe even nine red and comes away with a comfortable victory.
So take Andy Ruise to win, take him to win,
(01:09:06):
by decision, get rich, bet with me. Those are my
picks this week, brought to you by fan Duel. That's
it for this week's episode. By thanks to Sergio Mora,
Andy Ruise, and Nick Young for joining the show. As always, subscribe, rate,
review this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever you download podcast,
(01:09:26):
and I'll see you next week.
