Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh, it's a Tuesday lot to talk about live in
Los Angeles. It's The Herd. Wherever you may be and
however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part
of your day. Jmac. I don't know how I'm supposed
to feel about Detroit last night. Geno Smith almost forty
first downs, Seattle's missing all for their best defensive players
(00:46):
up front, then two others get injured and Seattle made
a fight out of it. I think I came out
of that game respecting Seattle more than I did liking
Detroit more, which is a weird feeling. The great Pete
Rose haul Famer, Hits King passes away. We'll talk about that.
We got Nick right, Mark Sanchez, Jalen Johnson, the Bear
stopping by. But last night I came out of that
(01:08):
game with weird vibes.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
That's interesting. I thought you would watch Miami and have weird.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Vibe unwatchable by two of Theo's valuable, doesn't he? So
Detroit wins forty two to twenty nine. The Lions score
forty two points. Jared Goff goes eighteen for eighteen, and
I'm sitting there thinking, man, Detroit's got red flags everywhere.
So Gino Smith had thirty eight first downs. He engineered
thirty eight first downs. That's the most ever in the
history of the league for a losing team. Now, maybe
(01:35):
Gino's better than I give him credit for. He's certainly
a B quarterback. He's capable, has a good arm, and
he has tremendous backs tight end, wide receiver talent. But
they marched up and down the field on Detroit, and
basically Seattle was in a hole from the beginning. They
were chasing him. Detroit knew they had to chase. So
that's an advantage for the defense. And I look around
the NFL right now, and all the good teams play
(01:57):
pretty good defense. Minnesota does, and San Francisco does, and
Baltimore does, and Buffalo does except for Monday night and
Sunday night, and Kansas City does. And so I'm looking
at all these teams that are pretty good in the NFL.
Houston does, and I'm thinking, and Detroit's defense I don't
trust at all. That was a home game, a huge
(02:17):
home Monday night football game. Seattle is not getting the whistle.
DK metcalf conversion should have counted two point conversion didn't.
Seattle's trailing the entire game. And Seattle's doing whatever they
want offensively, like whatever they want. So that's the first
thing that concerns me. Secondly, Detroit's in this transition stage.
(02:39):
Like Dan Campbell created a tough culture and deserves respect,
but he's got a transition from raw, raw guy to
situationally elite guy like an Andy Reid. Because my question is,
why is that game close? Why are you throwing out
of the end zone with a lead late and getting
a safety. You got to get past all the tough, raw,
raw guy stuff. You know, I understand everybody loves it,
(03:01):
bite kneecaps. He created it. I get it. I respect it. Okay,
now it's time to transition to a smarter football team.
And it feels like too often when I watched Detroit
and they were so bad for so long, I understand,
this is tough. They're finally winning, and they're kind of giddy.
The fans are giddy. The media is giddy in Detroit,
(03:23):
like we're winning. Okay, that's great. Now you're consistently winning.
Now it's the pivot. You've come a long way. You're
like the family member that finally got their act together.
Everybody's happy for them, but you still wouldn't trust them
taking your kids to Disneyland. That's what the Lions have become. Hey, congratulations,
(03:43):
you're not vaping anymore. But I would appreciate it if
every time you come over, you don't go into a
thirty minute lecture on crypto. Like we all are rooting
for Detroit. We all like Detroit, we all think it's great,
but I wouldn't trust them. I can't trust them. I'm
I'm not taking my kids to Disneyland. I just don't
trust them. And that's where I am. And they're in
(04:04):
this raw, raw stage. And while they're fun and goff
is this, and I mean, they're hard not to like.
And maybe we'll know the truth about Detroit pretty soon
because if you look at their schedule, they got an
early buy. So Detroit goes into the by and then
their schedules pretty brutal at Dallas, at Minnesota, at Green Bay,
at Houston. Jacksonville may have their act together by then,
(04:26):
so maybe that's it. But run the clockout? How are
you getting a safety? What are you doing? It may
not matter against an injury depleted Seahawk team at home
on Monday night. It's gonna matter against San Francisco if
you're on the road, or a playoff game against Minnesota
when you're on the road, Like, clean it up. The
raw row stuff was fun, it was great. We're all
(04:47):
rooting for you. But I watched that game, and I
think I was more impressed with what Seattle did on
the road with Gino. Five hundred sum yards, thirty eight
first downs, missing their four best defensive play in the box.
Here's Dan Campbell after every.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Week's going to be different, you know. This was this
was a little bit of a track meet, whereas you know,
these first few games have been more of these low scoring.
Our defense has been able to score twenty points. You're winning,
you know, and and so every game's different. You find
a way to win the one in front of.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
You, you know what, every game kind of looked the
same when the Patriots had a dynasty, and every Chiefs
game sort of looks the same, and though the outcomes
can be different, every Ravens game sort of feels the same.
If your team looks different every week, it lacks a consistency,
a consistency that teams that Hoyst trophies have. The Chiefs
(05:40):
games all look the same. New England's game forever looked
the same, even the Ravens game had they not blown
that lead to the Raiders, they were leading late, like
they all kind of look. You get that dynamic offense,
you get speed, you get aggressiveness, you get good coaching,
you get toughness. I never know what I get with
the right They won and I saw red flags all right,
(06:04):
the Jets. Things now getting weird. So Robert Sala has
only coached Aaron Rodgers officially for what five games, and
he's learning what Matt Lafleur and Mike McCarthy found out.
Aaron's gonna do what Aeron wants to do, and if
you push back on him, he's gonna call you out. Okay,
(06:24):
but it's important, this is an important reality in this relationship.
It was never balanced. You know, you've all seen the
marriage where she's rich, he isn't. He's rich, she isn't.
It's not balanced. Personalities aren't balanced. So Aaron comes into
this relationship in New York. Aaron's a winner and the
Jets are perpetual losers. Aaron's a Hall of Famer first ballot,
(06:49):
rich and successful. Robert sala isn't isn't instant. Aaron's West
Coast California cool. The Jets are sort of New York messy,
and so this relationship, and there's a distinction. You don't
have to be best friends. Brady and Belichick, we're not
(07:11):
best friends. But there's gotta be mutual respect. And I
have three instances this year, two of them at the
mic where I have sensed there isn't a lot of respect.
And we've always known two words with Aaron, prickly and moody.
That's not my opinion, ask his family. It's well documented.
It's in books. He's prickly and he's moody, and he
(07:32):
pushes back quickly, and they'll often do it publicly when
he's ticked off, to call you out. So I thought
this was really interesting. Yesterday, a former Jet quarterback and
former MVP for the Bengals. Boomer Assiasin's on a popular
radio show in New York WFAN Morning Show, and he
noticed something because he's been in this situation in his life.
And you know, this is local radio generally speaking. You know,
(07:53):
it's kind of favorable to the home team and the
home stars. I get that, done that, and get that.
But I thought Boomer out something and something I hadn't
paid a lot of attention to. He had, and this
is interesting.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I try to watch to see if I see any
interactions on the sideline or anything. Nothing not that I
see a guy walking right past the other guy. I
can't imagine that. Now, Bulkwell, deny it. I guarantee it.
But there is an issue there, and it's because you
have this forty year old Hall of Fame quarterback to
be dealing with a coach that I think he doesn't respect.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
And again, Prickly and Moody, that's okay for a linebacker
and a tight end. But Aaron's the savior of the franchise. Again,
it came in unbalanced. Aaron was going to save the
franchise from these losing coaches and losing coordinators and losing
owner and losing fans unbalanced, and now you're kind of
(08:50):
pushing back on Aaron and his cadence, and Aaron's thinking privately, hell,
you talking about who are you? What's your record? What's mine?
Where's your trophy? I get it, the ego, I get it.
But when it leaks out publicly, that's what you've always
had the deal with Aaron. Lafleur felt it, McCarthy felt it.
(09:12):
And by the way, you get two, you get two errands.
So when Aaron's happy, he's the best, he's the best
player in the league at the mic, and we saw
that after the win over New England. This is the
good erin joyful smiling, everybody's on board. Here's the good
erin after a win.
Speaker 6 (09:32):
It's easier when you're kind of getting kicked in the
teeth to kind of come together. It's us against the world,
it's us against the big bad media who's saying.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
How bad we are?
Speaker 6 (09:42):
You know, we can kind of come together, But can
you still come together and have the same approach when
everybody's kind of starting to sing your praises a little bit?
I think that's the mark of a great team is
can you handle the success part with the same focus,
the same mentality, the same mindset, the same energy. When
you're starting to get on a little bit.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Of a role, I get behind that guy, good looking, charismatic, smart,
like I get behind that guy. I like that guy.
But as we know, and it's documented, Aaron turns fast,
gets dark, prickly, moody fast, and here's Aaron. A week later,
the Cayden specifically, Robert said, that might be something you've
(10:21):
asked have to dial back a little bit.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Is that something you think could potentially help the situation.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
That's fun way to do it. The other ways hold
them accountable. I mean, we haven't had an issue. We've
had one false start. Morgan had one false start, I
believe until this so you know it's been a weapon.
We use it every day in practice, don't you know
we rarely have a false start, and to have I
don't know, five today, it seemed like four or five. Yeah,
(10:47):
it's and it seems like an out there I don't
know if we need to make mass changes.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
It's like a different guy. But I get it. This
all goes back to bringing in Aaron to be the savior.
This was never a balance relationship ever, Never was you
were asking him to save a losing franchise, losers trying
to be saved by a winner. And so when the
(11:13):
losers start criticizing the winner, what do you think the
winner's gonna think? Dude, I got a three hundred million
dollar networth, I got trophies, I'm first ballot. You guys
aren't gonna have a job in six weeks. Losers grab
give up draft capital money for a winner. Winner doesn't
want to hear from losers how to get it right.
(11:34):
I'm sorry, that's the reality. This was not a balance relationship.
So if they go to London and get waxed, you're
not getting happy erin you get into these relationships, it's
I mean, you're seeing it in Cleveland, all sorts of
different stuff. But desperate franchise go guarantee star quarterback, it
(11:55):
goes south, and star quarterback, rich quarterback looks at losing
franchise and starts pointing fingers. So there is you know,
I get Aaron looking around, going you have a problem
with my cadence. I'm the best cadence guy in the
history of the league. Aaron leads the NFL all time
in free play touchdowns, meaning he gets people to jump
(12:16):
off sides, he reads it, sees it free play. He's
the best ever at that. And now the Jets are going, hey,
you know we don't like the way you do cadence.
Excuse me. I'm the greatest cadence quarterback in the history
of the league. I don't even think we argue about that.
Aaron is that the prettiest ball, the best cadence guy
(12:36):
in the league. And the losers are tell him the
winner they don't like his cadence. I mean, listen, I
sit on the stage all the time, and you think
I hate Aaron, But he's the winner. He came in
as the savior. And if you're a coach with a
losing record and you start pointing fingers, hey, I don't
(12:58):
like the way you Hey, I don't like the way
you lose. Hey, owner, I don't like the way you're impulsive,
Hay offensive coordinator GM. This this is an unbalanced relationship, Jamak.
I know you thought I was coming in glass half
full guy, But I think boomerisias and I think he's
onto something.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Yeah, Boomer Siason watching this show yesterday when we went
after this same discussion, Rogers Versala just disappointed. Now he
wants to pile on for like, you know the New
York meat Balls. Listening to the radio, Why don't he's
thinking Rogers they lost for the broncra I don't think
that that's on that listen. That's what they do. They
try to stir drama. It's understandable that. Listen. I was,
(13:38):
I was a website owner, had the business, I sold it.
I know what it takes to stir up trouble, and
that's what Boomer Size is doing.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I think I think he's being very authentic and honest
with what he sees as a former great quarterback. I don't.
I don't think he's like typical guy. I think played
the position, knows the position, watches every snap. I mean,
let's be honest. Boomer will probably be at a practice
or something with Aaron Rodgers. He didn't want to call
him out. I'm on a stage where I never seen
ninety nine percent of these guys. If you're banging on
(14:06):
error Judge, if you work in New York, you'll see
her in Judge in the batting cage. So I don't know,
you think it's stirring it up. I look at that
and I think, oh, that's interesting play the position, knows
the position, watches the position. Also, when you work in
a local market, you do have an advantage. You know
your feet are on the ground in the local market.
You have salespeople, front office people. You're seeing him out
(14:27):
the dinner. You've got great connections. I don't know, I
think it's something if he's saying that, I don't you
think it's stirring the pod.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
I keep the same energy when the Jets meet the
Vikings in London this year. That's all I'm saying, Boomer,
That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
You are funny, not if when coming up next the
guys before us were arguing about this, it's funny. The
biggest quarterback mess is not New York, it's Pittsburgh. It
was totally predictable. We'll talk about that next Nick right
top of the hour.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in newon Eastern non am, Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
Well, it's the most predictable quarterback mess in the NFL.
We had said before the season, when Russell Wilson came
over and Justin Fields, my take was that Justin Fields
would win the locker room, and that Russell Wilson probably
had some guarantees on starting, or he wouldn't have come over,
(15:26):
and it was gonna get messy fast because Justin Fields
is bigger, he's more athletic, he's more dynamic, he's got
a bigger arm, and I think he's just more relatable
as a young guy with a young locker room as
the NFL continues to get young. Well, so, Russell Wilson
has a calf injury, doesn't play. Here is Justin Fields
getting you about a touchdown a game, but they were
(15:46):
three and zero and could have been four to oh so,
And again it doesn't always feel pretty with Justin Fields.
He doesn't throw great from the pocket. But here's the thing,
sixty five percent completion percentage against in one hundred and
four passer rating through for three hundred and twelve yards. Yes,
he can have an You know, it's not a perfect world, okay,
(16:08):
Even the great ones Andrew Luck came into the league
through a ton of picks, Peyton Manning through a ton
of picks. If you're sitting around looking for perfect you're
not going to get it from quarterbacks. Even Mahomes every
week has a terrible pick, So get over perfect. Justin
Fields is young, athletic, dynamic, and if he keeps winning.
He's not great from the pocket always, But Russell Wilson
(16:32):
isn't either, But at least with Justin Fields, his athletic
ability can cover up some mistakes and get you out
of trouble. In Chicago, none of it worked right in Pittsburgh.
You know they have a good defense, you know they
have stability, you know they have a Hall of Fame
level coach. Now Pittsburgh cannot figure out their offensive line.
It remains an enigma. It's middle of the pack. It's
(16:56):
better than it was two years ago. It's still not solved.
I tend to think that's defensive coaches struggle with O
line consistency. Offensive coaches are better with it. But I
get this is what we said, Younger, more dynamic, more relatable.
When when Russell Wilson was young, didn't have a big brand,
wasn't rich. He still didn't relate to Seattle's locker room
(17:18):
that much. And how do I know that? Because they
call came out and dogged him when he left. That's
just that's not an opinion, that's what you see. So
when Russell was relatable and young and not rich and
did never brand, he wasn't like the favorite player in
the Seahawk locker room. Everybody likes Justin Fields and his personality.
So so you put this kid in and he neither
(17:39):
Russ or Justin Fields are Mahomes from the pocket or
Joe Burrow from the pocket. But Russell now, athletically, he
can't overcome his limitations there with his athletic ability, and
Justin Fields can often and to me, that's that's why
if he's winning. I mean, I looked at the numbers
this morning, one hundred and four passer ratings, sixty three
(18:01):
d and twelve passing yards. He's moving the chains. And
here's Mike Tomlin on Justin Field's performance against the Colts.
Speaker 7 (18:09):
I'm appreciative of the fight, but I'm not congratulating them
for it. That's the business that we're in. Again, I
appreciate his fight, but he and we were a little
bit sloppy at times, too sloppy to to comfortably secure victory.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
So Adam Schefter reports, and again, Justin Fields can be sloppy.
He'll give you one or two moments in the game.
You're like you're wincing. You're like, he's not gonna be
Jared Goff, Jared. If you protect Jared Goff, it's eighteen
for eighteen. It looks beautiful, it's pretty. The ball comes
out Justin Fields, you're gonna get some stuff that just
(18:43):
burst through the ceiling. But the floor can be really,
really low. With Jared Goff, the floor is high, the
ceiling a bit lower, but you know what you're getting.
You don't know what with Justin Fields. But he's putting
up the numbers. He's got a legit oc they're winning games.
They could have been four to zero. And Adam Schefter
reported he said, if Russell Wilson, I trust shifty. If
(19:03):
Russell Wilson is not playing on Sunday night, that would
tell you that for the time being, he is rustled
away the starting quarterback job from Russell Wilson. So you
can see this thing coming from miles away. And here
we are, and here's j Mack with a.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
News now, this is the herd Line news.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
To follow that up. Mike Tomlin ten minutes ago was
asked if he's preparing for Justin Fields to start Sunday
and he said, yes, I am so it sounds like
it's going to be fields from here on.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Al So Schefter saying that means it's his team now.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
Yeah, So the producers we were just talking about, we're
going to get to Cowboys. Uh in a second here,
Cowboys Steelers is a really interesting game. Oh, it's it's
it's you know what the Cowboys have after that too? Right,
Detroit rematch from last year?
Speaker 1 (19:48):
That No, what's happening to teams like the Jets and
the Cowboys. We looked at their early schedule and we thought, Okay,
that's a tough one. That's a layup. That's a layup.
That's a lay that's a tough one. When you start
losing the layup, or like Dallas, you know, you get
blown out by New Orleans, you're like, let's recalibrate. Or
when you get beat by Denver and bow Nick who
throws for sixty yards, you have to recalibrate. So right now,
(20:10):
we've got very few what we consider great teams. Minnesota
looks incredible. We know Kansas said he's really good, and
then there's a handful of really bad teams. But you
start getting into that Dallas Jets thing. Are we sure
they're a good team.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
There's no elite teams right now. That's why there's been
one double digits spread all season. Nobody's pulled away. I'm sorry.
The Chiefs are not great, Colin, Well, we'll get to
them shortly. Let's start with with Dallas and Michael Parsons.
He's never missed a game due to injury in his career.
At that streak is in jeopardy except for the high
ankle spring Thursday. He was in a walking boot and
using a scooter at the team facility yesterday. We know
(20:47):
the Cowboys will be without DeMarcus Lawrence for four to
eight weeks at the list frank injury. Parsons has not
been ruled out yet, but here's how bad he wants
to be there. I figured myself invincible for a while.
When you are a real competitor, you only get seventeen
chances at this and missing one of these opportunities to
perform at the highest level bothers me. I feel like
(21:07):
I want to play on Sunday. I want to play.
If I can't play, I will Steelers favored by two
and a half. You removed to Marcus Lawrence and Micah
Parsons from a defense that kind of got run over
by Baltimore and the Saints did whatever they want. I
can see Justin Field's having a lot of success.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
Well obvious Sunday night. Here's here's what we're seeing. We
are seeing that Arthur Smith is smoothing out Justin Fields. Now,
Justin's always going to have He's bumpy. Chicago struggled to
settle the plane. It was always turbulent. I do feel
like in Pittsburgh it's a smoother ride. Like again, he
(21:48):
had a terrible fumble and everybody on the internet's going
to crush him for it, but if you just look
at the numbers, like it's like Caleb in Chicago. Now
he's getting more accurate every week. I'm watching Pittsburgh and
Justin Fields, and I'm like, it does feel like he
and the offensive coordinator have kind of devised a plan
and it kind of works for him.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
You know what I like most about Fields is they
got in a seventeen nothing trub We're getting crushed. I figured,
blowout city. Let me bet the Colts to win by
you know, ten or whatever, which was a stupid bet,
and Justin Fields fought back and fought back, and they
actually had a chance late in the fourth. I was
impressed by Fields. I don't think there's there's even discussion
about Russell Wilson. Fields has been very good. Pickens, by
(22:29):
the way, how good is he looking on the outside.
They could just figure out the running back room. I
don't know if Jalen Warren's back yet. Offensive line injuries
are worth watching. Yeah, but I like Pittsburgh. Here Colin
under a field goal at home.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
No well, and also Sunday night game.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Oh, it's gonna be It's gonna be a scene in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Well, it was a scene in Detroit, it was a
scene in New York. It was a scene in Buffalo,
it was a scene in Baltimore. You get these standalone
games with good teams. Pittsburgh's looks good. I think the
old are Arthur Smith thing is being undervalued. This is
an organization that struggled with OC's for years and Tomlin's
missed on a few. I think they hit on this one.
(23:07):
I think I think Arthur Smith works.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Yeah, let's get to the next story. And this is
the ugly Monday night football game Dolphins Titans. It was
a tough watch. So last week Tyreek Hill said the
Dolphins were cooking up a crazy game plan to get
him involved in the offense. He had four catches for
twenty three yards last night, Colin. Heading into the fourth quarter,
Jared Goff had more receiving yards than Tyreek Hill. Jared
(23:31):
Goff in the lines. You know he caught the touchdown pass.
Tyrek Kill had six yards heading into the fourth quarter receiving.
He had a blow up on the sideline that was
not pretty. I don't know if you've seen the video.
I don't know if we have it here, but he's
basically just yelling right behind McDaniel. McDaniel has his stone
face looked like it's your kid melting down.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
Well, Also, there was a moment in that game. Did
you watch it when they did that pass behind the
line of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
He didn't even try for it.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Tyreek Hill's been playing football since he was twice seven.
He didn't know the rules on that. So Tyreek Hill
can get upset. That is basic football. And I'm like, Tyreek,
the ball's on the carpet, and so Tyreek can you
can yell and screen, but that play you're not locked in.
If you don't know one of the four or five
basic rules, play.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
The whistle, very basic. Anyways, Mike McDaniel was asked about
Tyreek Hill's sideline explosion. Here's the coach.
Speaker 8 (24:22):
I would expect him to be visibly upset at somebody.
He's a leader, and he did not. He wanted to
do everything that he could to make sure the result
wasn't that. And so there's you know, within the locker room,
there's a lot of guys challenging each other and we
get an opportunity to se we're were made of.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
For sure. It is interesting how many teams in the
NFL are just dreadful at backup quarterback. And sixty quarterbacks
play a year. And I mean give Carolina credit, Andy
Dalton's a good backup. I mean some of these teams,
it is remarkable to me how bad the backup quarterback
(25:06):
situation is.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Look at how bad they've been without I mean.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Tua is under winner for Miami last night was Tua.
I mean without Tua, they can't Janet they could.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
I think they're the worst team in the NFL without Tua,
Like they look Colin. They went ten quarters without scoring
a touchdown, Like that's worse than Zach Wilson with the Jets.
They don't have a solution here. This is kind of
on the front office all off season. Were we not
saying draft Michael Pennix, draft the quarterback just because Toua
was healthy?
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Okay, so what so here here we go. So everybody
beat up on Atlanta for signing Kirk and having Penis
Pennicks probably the most talented backup in the league. Look
at Miami, you think drafting Penis would have been crazy?
You are unwatchable, you are less, You're the worst team
in the league. For everybody banging on the Atlanta Falcons,
(25:57):
who are gonna win this division are good. They're gonna
they're gonna end up with ten, eleven or twelve I think,
I swear, I don't think they're great, but in that division.
But Atlanta's like, yeah, we're gonna have two quarterbacks that
can play. Sixty quarterbacks are now playing every year. Why
aren't more teams doing what Atlanta got crushed for it?
And I'm like, you're telling me. A mistake in the
(26:19):
NFL is having the best backup quarterback in the league
and payn Kirk Cousins a contract. It's not to his contract,
it's not Mahomes Allen. It's a big contract. It's not
an out. It's not Deshaun's contract, it's not Russell's contract
in Denver. It's in the one hundreds.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Well, what hurts McDaniel is watching his buddy Lafleur bring
in Malik Willis in less than a month and play
two games and win them and look competent like it
was a good game play. Well, Lamy's had no game.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Yeah, but Malik was drafted, was in me a second
round guy or something?
Speaker 3 (26:50):
Titans moved off him because he couldn't do it.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
But he does have talent. It's just it's like, folks,
it's a quarterback league. You got to have a good
underst You can't just I don't care. If you're a
big Broadway play, there's got to be an understudy around.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
I'm nobody get low sick. We like to be forward thinking.
This this mining seems really there's a They're devoid of talent.
The offensive line is atrocious, no Armstead, they can't block anybody.
Why don't you at least gauge the market for a
guy like Tyreek Hill? Just see what you can get
for him. Can you get two first round picks for
I don't know. Can you get a one, two, and five.
(27:28):
I'm just at least floated to see what you can
get for Tyreek Hill, because let's be real, Collet, No, no, you.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
Could get first of all, So two is your quarterback
and yet your O line's bad and you have no
backup quarterback. That's on the front office. I mean, you
can have a bad secondary and be a track meet team.
You can't have no backup and a bad old line
if two is your starting quarterback, and that's not a
shot on to it. It's a reality of who he is.
(27:53):
But like Green Bay, Jordan Love doesn't have a history
of getting hurt. They had a capable backup in and
they have good offensive lines.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Get to all their wide receivers. They got a fleet
of like five guys. I know, Tyreek Kill's awesome, and
he's fast, and he's a superstar. He's replaceable, Colin he is.
You can get a bunch of dudes in there, third
round wide receiver to come in and put up really
good numbers opposite Waddle. I know Miami's not going to
do it, and they love Tyreek Hill, but if you're
smart in your front office, I think you try to
move off of look at the numbers, by the way,
(28:21):
with two in week one, twelve targets seven for a
buck thirty the last three games combined with a bunch
of backups ten catches for eighty seven yards. Maybe I'm
being too harsh. Let's go to the final story and
that's the forty nine ers. They've been down some weapons.
Brock Purdy's shouldering the load. Kidtle returned, which was nice.
How about this stat? Rock Party has scrambled for eight
(28:43):
first downs this season, and he's been extending plays more
than we've seen in his career. Yeah, Purty talked about
his athleticism. It's underrated on the team.
Speaker 9 (28:52):
I think my ten yards split, just to give you
guys some perspective, is faster than Christians and debo. I
think you guys in fact check me, but uh, that's
what I mean. I think I just have enough to
get out of the pocket and make a play pick
up five seven yards here or there. So I'm not
Lamar Jackson's BYD means. But anyways, Steward, it takes.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
No I think total fairness. When I watched that Rams game,
we saw this with C. J. Stroud in college. We
thought he was a pocket quarterback. Then he faced Georgia
and Randy and he went, wow. We saw this with
Herbert at Oregon. We thought he was a pocket quarterback.
Last game at Oregon, they let him run. You're like, wow,
brock Purty, they don't. When he has Christian McAffrey behind him,
he doesn't have to run, right, he doesn't have to.
(29:32):
But when they're down weapons and he has to engineer
some off script stuff. He's a nice little athlete.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
So I know we love Cemac on the show. Colin,
if you've been reading following some of the stuff.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
No, both legs.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
I think there's a chance he doesn't play this season.
I mean, I don't know if he's definitely out, but
it sounds like it's not any time good. Here's my question.
If you just keep Mason in for McCaffrey and everyone
else is healthy, are you, Deebo Kittle, Trent Williams, where
are the Niners still maybe the best team in the NFC.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
They're not as good, but they're really good.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
Yeah, I means better than them. If Semac is out
in Jordan Mason's.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Well with health with Philadelphia and Dallas look like they're
falling off a Cliff and Detroit good, but that defense
is bad.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
So who else is there in the NFC? And that's
I don't think they're in as much trouble without McCaffrey
as everybody else does.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
I'll tell you this, I was blown away by Seattle
last night.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
May they they're good. They're only going to get better
with the defensive lineman coming back.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
They were missing all four. I mean the minute they
announced that, Joe Buck said that, I'm like, Okay, the
game's over. Yeah, they're not gonna be able to but
the offensive clinic Gino Smith. I know in Seattle they're
looking for the trophy guy. I get it. Gino is
maybe the best of the guys we don't think to
win a Super Bowl. He's He's near the top of
that list of guys we don't think because he throws
(30:55):
big guy, big arm. He was throwing heat.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
And I know we like to talk coordinators on the show.
The kid Grubb from Washington awesome game, hook and ladder.
On third and sixteen, they converted out oh in the
middle of the field, like I like Kenneth Walker coll
on this seat. You're right Seattle time day. They have
two backs, a tight end, three receivers, double digit loss,
and they came out like I think, not smelling like roses,
(31:21):
but looking like a lousehit.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
I was a Seahawk fan this morning. I was like, oh,
that that was a great loss. We've seen a couple
this year. We're like, that is a great loss. That
was one of them. J Mack with a news.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the
Herd Line.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Now, by the way, we're on in the San Francisco
Bay area this morning. We debut today on nine to
sixty AM. iHeart Sports talking more so I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays.
And noone eas there not a em Pacific.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
So I saw stat the Eagles offense Philadelphia about ready
to go off a cliff after Sunday. Their offense in
the first quarter under Shane Steichen, that's the rate coordinator
who left to coach the Colts. This is when Jalen
Hurts was like an MVP level player. So under Steichen
they were top five and virtually everything points, yards per play,
(32:10):
third down percentage the Eagles offense. This is in the
first quarter. The Eagles offense in the first quarter this season,
they're dead last or last in almost everything. They're a
disaster without Shane Stikeen. So increasingly we're getting into a
situation with Philadelphia where we have a coach who got
a job where people had major questions if he was ready.
(32:34):
Shane Steiken comes in, calls the plays, runs the offense.
We're like, oh, this Sirianni guy's a little quirky and immature,
but it works. The coordinator leaves, and now we look
like we got a head coach that's completely over his skis.
This was Jalen Hurts when asked about the conversations with
(32:54):
Nick Sirianni to fix this offensive mess.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
As you entered up buying Nathana, do you two talk
about the message, speed of the team, or how you
kind of want to handle Okay, how'd you guys go
into the second party?
Speaker 1 (33:07):
We have a moment's we have our moments. Here's the
weird thing. So you can blame Nick Siriani, go ahead,
I get it. But remember this organization does not give
power to coaches that probably cancels Belichick. They would not
(33:28):
have hired Jim Harbaugh. They're not going to hire Sean Payton.
Howie Roseman runs it very respected, GM, hyper aggressive, makes
more deals than anyone, wins a lot of deals, and
Chip ca So think about their coaches. Doug Peterson came in.
Peterson when he got fired, came out publicly and said
(33:48):
after every game, even wins, they were questioning play calling.
Peterson gets bounced. Peterson came in with no power, first
head coaching job, no power, wins a Super Bowl out,
duals Belichick, and he gets tired of being asked after
wins and losses about situational football by an executive, and
(34:10):
they bounce him. Chip Kelly college guy, first big NFL break,
goes ten and six, ten and six, first two years
with sort of like B level quarterbacks or you know,
journeyman quarterbacks, and then they get rid of Howie Roseman
and how he comes back, and they get rid of
Chip and so then they hire Nick Sirianni, who's got
no power. Everybody in the league was like, he's not
(34:33):
We're not sure he's a great coordinator, he's more of
a position coach. He gets the job. So my question
is this, are they willing to hire a powerful coach
because that's what it looks like. You need to solve
this mess. I mean Nick Sirianni shocked he got the job.
Chip Kelly first NFL job, Doug Peterson first NFL job.
(34:55):
This looks like a mess that a hardball can solve.
I mean, seriously, they're not hire and harball, so you
can blame the coach, but this organization has a history.
The GM runs the show and by the way, Brett
Veach is also arguably the best general manager in the
NFL in Kansas City. But Andy runs the football team.
Patrick Mahomes runs the offense. There is a sense that
(35:17):
is it is silo management. Everybody owns their space. Howie's
got a lot of power. He's very smart, he's very aggressive.
He's got the ear of the general, the owner, Jeffrey Lorie,
and that's great. I love Philadelphia. They make changes. They're proactive.
They're not impulsive. Indianapolis can be impulsive because of ERSA.
I never ever look at Philly as impulsive. But they're proactive.
(35:40):
And this is a mess what you have on your
hands now. Was Sirianni hired because Howie Roseman got displaced
by Chip Kelly. Chip Kelly, you know, he was the
talk of the league ten and six college guy new
thirteen second offense, and stuff started leaking, and Chip's getting crushed.
But Chip's winning with BG quarterbacks, and pretty soon Chip
(36:02):
is gone. And how he's got no interest giving up
the power again. So that's my takeaway. This is not
a fix. I mean he did Nick Siriani. It's time
to go get an adult coach who's won, who's proven,
who's a veteran. But and for the record, I could
see Philadelphia moving off Sirianni in two weeks. Seriously, that's
what they do. They've moved off super Bowl winning coaches.
(36:24):
Chip Kelly had a winning record. Absolutely, they'd move off this. Remember,
not a quick reaction doesn't always mean impulsive. It's sometimes
it's proactive. We got a problem, we can't fix it.
We made a mistake, let's get out. I respect that,
and Belichick could fix it. He'd get the defense up
to speed, lower scoring games, easier to win because right
(36:45):
now the defense is bad. But we don't even know
what Nick Sirianni does. I mean, he's not like a
quarterback whisperer Jalen Hurts. Obviously. The answer again is weird.
Like sometimes we talk, it's it's it kind of feels
solid Rogers. The difference is Rogers is Rogers, right, He's
gonna solve some stuff because he's Aaron Rodgers. So let's
(37:05):
look at the Week five schedule and what's in the
what's in the windshield for the Philadelphia Eagles. So you know,
you start looking at all these games around the league
and in their division. I don't know, I I look
at Philadelphia. There's an opportunity here to make a big move.
(37:27):
Eagles on a bye week this week. Wouldn't that be
an easier time to make a move on a coach?
Now you say it silly, that's ridiculous. They've moved off
winning coaches trophy hoisting coaches. Philly's on a buy And
by the way, it's the loudest sports talk radio city
and columnist city in the country. So they are crushing
(37:47):
Sirianni and Jalen Hurts again, Jalen's really good at the
podium When Jalen's coming up at the podium and Jalen
is giving you awkward answers on Sirianni. A story leaked
in the off season that Sirianni and Jalen had issues.
Philadelphia is just not going to sit on their hands.
It's a bye week, and this is not a great division.
We don't know what to make a Washington Giants are Dallas's. Eh,
(38:10):
this is a division they should win. And so they
get Cleveland at home off the bye. That feels good.
But if they don't win convincingly, I don't know. I
don't think it's crazy for Philadelphia. They're not going to
sit on their hands. That's not you start looking at
Philadelphia right now, Okay, bye, I don't know. I see
(38:33):
I see some road games. I see Joe Burrow, I
see Dallas, I see Washington, I see McVay and Stafford,
I see Lamar. Those are tough games, a lot of
them on the road. Maybe the bye came at the
perfect time, but boy, you better look good off that bye.
And by the way, what a top coaches do? They
look great off byes. And you read off of bye
(38:58):
McVeigh to start to see then, I mean, what what
do great offensive coaches do? Right they off a bye?
You come out clean? You look I mean, look look
at what Harbad did in a week. I mean, if
you go, if you go look at the Ravens like
they can lose to the Raiders. Then they come out
against Dallas and Baltimore's first halfs against Buffalo and Dallas,
(39:19):
they look like the best team in the world. That's
called scripted plays, that's called that's called coaching.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
The Eagles should also get Lane Johnson, Davonte Smith, AJ
Brown should all be back after the bye. They smashed
Cleveland and there's nothing to worry about. They're gonna be fire.
I think this is probably the third best team in
the NFC.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
That's what I said three weeks ago. Look, I thought
that one.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
Loss, which we both called on, well one of us.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Bottom fell out last year and they weren't as injuryed.
To ten and one to two fell out last year
and they had a lot of their dudes. Hour two
next
