You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Welcome to the Herd. It's me Jason McIntyre in again
for Colin Cowherd, heading into a spectacular holiday weekend film
with NBA, maybe some fun NFL storylines. I'm joined as
always by Alex Curry. Alex, I mean, listen, it's a
long holiday weekend. We're working. Everybody else stuck at traffic,
We're grinding away.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
But this is what this is what you sign up
for when you go into sports. It means you're doing
well when you're working holidays and you're working weekends.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
So I always embrace it. I love it.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Happy to be here with you. And it's Friday Funday.
Can we rebrand well Friday.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Funday Fun Day?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Yeah, certainly. We got a lot of good topics today.
We're gonna start with the NBA. Last night, the Boston
Celtics easily dispatched the Indiana Pacers. Kind of a snoozer.
My men's league game was way more heated. It win
over time. Celtics win easily, and you know, Jalen Brown
had forty, But the biggest storyline kind of was the
Tyrese haliburt and hamstring injury. It looks like he may

(01:25):
not be able to go in Game three, and we
know if you go down three in the NBA playoffs,
it's a death sentence. Teams that fall behind oh and
three I think are zero and one hundred and fifty
three in the playoffs. So not good for the Pacers.
But there's an interesting storyline regarding Jalen Brown, the Boston
Star who scored forty last night. And I say star

(01:46):
because he was All NBA last season. Now, earlier this week,
the NBA announced the All NBA teams and Jalen Brown
was snubbed, And it was kind of weird because Boston
had the best record in the league. The Celtics one
NBA point differential by an astronomical margin. They had the
most twenty point wins in the NBA. They eviscerated the league,

(02:08):
totally dominated, yet only one player Jason Tatum was All NBA.
How does that kind of thing happen? And you wonder
would Jalen Brown take that personally? Well, here's Jalen Brown
after dropping forty on the Pacers last night on the
All NBA snob. Was there any motivation for you after

(02:30):
hearing that you didn't make an All NBA team?

Speaker 5 (02:34):
No, I want to say that.

Speaker 6 (02:35):
What would you say?

Speaker 7 (02:38):
I mean, we two games from the finals, so you know, honestly,
I don't got the time to give.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Oh, you gotta love that Jaleen Brown a quiet anger.
They're seething, and you know who it's a shot at.
Let's be real, people who follow the NBA. It's kind
of a jab at Halliburton, who was injured miss some games,
doesn't play defense like Jalen Brown and Helibert was on
the other side of the court last night. Jalen Brown
went off and let the people know. And I gotta
be honest, Jalen Brown's got some beef. Okay, Well, I'm

(03:07):
not gonna sit here and argue All NBA. But the
Lakers who were playing team had two guys that were
All NBA, Lebron and Ad And I'm not saying they
didn't deserve it. They were playing team okay, the Phoenix
Suns six seed dusted. I'm talking swept in the first
round by the timber Wolves. They had two all NBA players, Boston,

(03:28):
top team in the league, only gonna get one. It
felt a little strange. Now I should point out everything
is lining up for Boston right there now, ten and
two in the playoffs. In the opening round, Jimmy Butler
did not play due to an injury. Second round, Donovan
Mitchell misses a couple games due to injury, and now

(03:48):
we've got the Halliburton injury. Things are lining up for Boston.
And I'm you know, I talked yesterday with the Mavericks.
It's looking to me like a Celtic's Mavericks collision course
in the finals. And if Boston ends up sweeping Indy,
which is certainly in play, if Haliburton doesn't go in
game three, we're looking at Boston having eight to ten

(04:08):
days off before the NBA Finals. Eight to ten. That's
great news for Poorzingis. They had a big guy, Cornette
I think got dinged up last night. He's not a factor,
but again they need ten minutes out of him. In
the playoffs ten minutes a game. Everything lines up for Boston.
There are no excuses. I know Colin is off Boston
being a potential dynasty. They're also in line to go
back to the finals for the second time in three years.

(04:31):
And listen, I'm not the biggest Jalen Brown fan in
the world. I like his game. I think his handle's
still in question. He did side note leading up to
the NBA Draft. He was working out at my gym
and I got a peek in the window at him
and I was like, Oh, this guy's pretty nice. I
didn't think he was a top five pick. He has
emerged as a top fifteen player in the NBA. That's undeniable.

(04:52):
And you guys, I'm sure have seen the movie Gladiator.
I don't know what it is with me referencing these
old school war movies yesterday, Troy today. But Jalen Brown's
quotes last night where he was so, you know, seething
with anger, it reminds me of Gladiator where Russell Crowe
said I will have my vengeance in this life for
the next. I'm sure you remember that classic line. Listen,

(05:13):
Jalen Brown is getting his vengeance and he kind of
had a good Finals a couple of years ago against
the Warriors, then petered out in the last few games,
and again, you know, the offensive skill set not totally there.
He dropped forty last night though, Jalen Brown getting his
revenge for the All NBA snub, and the Celtics look
like they're hurtling toward another trip to the NBA Finals.

(05:33):
All right, I want to quickly pivot to the NFL
and Jordan Love Colin Cowherd's favorite quarterback. I don't know,
it's a battle between him and Jared Goff. This is
a situation now in Green Bay. We're not at def
Con one, probably at deaf Con three. So Jordan Love
famously drafted in the first round. They traded up for him.
Rogers was, oh, he was so ticked off. He used

(05:56):
that as vengeance and went and got two MVP awards
in a row. The Packers were at the top of
the NFC, just couldn't break through. So Love sits for
two years, then sits for a third, started just one
game in his first three years, and then they have
the beef with Rogers, and he moves on and Rodgers
is angry and pouting whatever Jordan Love starts last year

(06:16):
kind of okay. He was nothing special mid as the
kids like to say. And then what happened in the
second half of the season, final eight games, Jordan Love
was dominant, eighteen touchdowns, one interception you tossed in the
play in games. And look at how Jordan Love ended
the season spectacular fashion, no doubt, emerging as maybe a

(06:37):
top ten quarterback in the league. I think it's did
in play I don't know that he's there yet, but
it's only half a season and a couple of playoff
games to build on. He did look good against Dallas
and dak on the road, and then nearly went to
San France and pulled off the win. That was a
great game. But all arrows are pointing up in Green Bay.
You know, Jordan Love basically has the vibes through the

(06:59):
roof in Green Bay. However, however, there's always a hell. However,
his contract situation is a little tricky, so they decided
we're gonna renegotiate you last year, and Jordan Love only
basically had a one year guarantee. So now he blows
up last season and he's essentially saying, show me the money.

(07:19):
The media asked Jordan Love, what does the future hold?
So if you don't get a deal, are you gonna
not show up for training camp? Here's Jordan Love talk
to the media this week. I already know what's going on,
but we'll see.

Speaker 7 (07:31):
But I'm not gonna get into too much contract stuff.

Speaker 8 (07:34):
Is that would you be comfortable playing under the current
deal or is that something that you don't want to
do at this.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Point, We'll see.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
I don't know yet.

Speaker 9 (07:40):
You know, we'll see.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
M gosh. I love a good quarterback controversy. Now listen,
this may be a controversy, This may be done in
a couple of weeks. But I've talked about compound interests
before on this show. People love when I get all financial.
The best things in life come from compound interest learning, finances, obviously, relationships. Trust.

(08:02):
Nobody knows this better than the Green Bay Packers. You'd
Brett Fahr for fifteen years at your starting quarterback, then
your transition to Aaron Rodgers, who gave you fourteen years. Folks,
that's almost three decades with only two quarterbacks. Do you know?
And I referenced the Jets or my team earlier? You
know the Jets would just kill for one guy to

(08:23):
the last fifteen years.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
That's it.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
G give me one quarterback that I can invest in
and build that compound interest. So I'm not shuttling around
looking for a quarterback every few years because it ain't fun.
It's not I remember a guy the Jets had in
the eighties, Ken O'Brien. I was like, Oh, he's the guy,
he's the man. Okay, he had a ceiling. Didn't last
ten years with the Jets, wasn't a starter for fifteen
didn't bring us to a super Bowl. Yeah, I can

(08:46):
say us. You look at the Miami Dolphins. They're the
quintessential example. Dan Marino, superstar, goes to the Super Bowl
in year two. You think you got him. He sticks
around forever. You don't get back. Have you seen the
carousela quarterbacks in Miami since Dan Marino retired, they're still searching.
They don't even know if t was the guy. Once

(09:06):
you find the one, you lock that in. Whether it's relationships,
I said, learning investing, compound interest wins. And the Green
Bay Packers can make this very easy. They can look
at Jordan Love and say you're our next guy. For
fifteen years. We believe in you that second half of
the season. We love it. There's a reason we trade

(09:27):
it up to grab you, Jordan, because you're our guy.
Now you're not gonna get fifty five million a year. Sorry,
you're not Burrow at this stage, we haven't seen it.
And he says, well, Jared Goff got fifty three million.
I know he's got a better body of work than me,
but I don't know. I was okay against him head
to head, and I don't think they're much better than us.

(09:48):
You look at our team. We got young head coach,
we got young skill position players. The Packers are really
set up as one of the better young rosters in
the league. Compound interest, keep me, pay me, And then
it becomes well, what do you pay the guy? And
you know you could argue Packers are gonna hold firm.
He's getting paid the season. We don't need to pay him. Sure,

(10:09):
you can be jerks about it and do that and
really tick off your franchise quarterback who you want sticking
around for the next ten years, or you can make
it easy and show the man his money. I'm not
saying you got to pay hi fifty three million, like
Jared Goff. I don't know that he's got the body
of work. That's Warren's fifty three mil. But I don't
know Trevor Lawrence is gonna get paid here in short order.

(10:29):
And you can't tell me with a straight face that
Trevor Lawrence, who I love. I was a huge Trevor
Lawrence fan of Clemson. You can't tell me that he
has been demonstratively better than Jordan Love. He just has not.
And Jordan Love, I know it's only one season as
a starter, but you've got something to build on with
the continuity in that organization. A lot of young skill
position guys, very young coach. I don't see why they

(10:52):
can't just pony up the money. Now the question becomes, well,
what happens if they don't? Is he going to really
hold out? And since the new Collective Bargain Agree agreement,
we haven't seen a quarterback really hold out now. Chris
Jones of the Chiefs held out last year. It blew
up in his face, a total disaster. He regrets doing it.
Bosa in San fran different story. They were able to

(11:14):
wave his fines for his holdout. He got his money.
Everything's copasetic. What's gonna happen with Jordan Love. Do the
Packers decide they're gonna play hardball or do they say, hey,
we want to build something special here. We've got our guy.
We don't want to go the franchise tag route. We
don't want to do that. Remember Kirk Cousins in Washington
hated the franchise tag. Washington liked kirk Cousins. They didn't

(11:36):
want to put a ring on it. And they were like, oh, well,
franchise tag you like, We trust that we're gonna be together.
Well two franchise tags later, he's out the door and
Washington's scrambling and they're going through the Taylor Heinekes of
the world and the Ryan Fitzpatricks. Now, maybe they have
their guy in jayde Daniels, but it's been a tough
go since kirk Cousins left. When you have the one
and they think Jordan Love is the one, you gotta

(11:57):
lock it up. I don't think there's any doubt here
Love is gonna get paid. I know the guy who
usually sits in his chair wants to preach patience. Let's
see some more. Doesn't work like that. Jordan Love doesn't
have all the power, but He's got some power. And
I believe the Packers will get this done this offseason
before training camp and things will look good. Arrow pointing
up for the Green Bay Packers. The vibes are good,

(12:19):
there are they not, Alex, that was.

Speaker 5 (12:21):
A good take. Vibes are high.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
The thing is is, like I love how teams like
pretend like, oh, we can't pay the guy. It's the
most important position on the field. You're gonna have to
pay a quarterback if you want a good quarterback. The
prices are only going up. So keep that in mind too,
that where the bar is now it was Burrow I
think makes the most yearly. I mean it's going to
it's going to keep rising, as we're seeing across all sports,

(12:46):
but especially the quarterback position. You have your guy, we
saw that he gelled with the team last year and
got you to the postseason.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Hey man, what's the line from the wire? Yesterday's price
is not today's price. Yeah. And if Treuv, Laurence and
Tua get paid, yeah, And it's like, I don't know,
forty eight to fifty, Like what do you do with love?
You can't loball the guys.

Speaker 5 (13:06):
You're gonna have to pay the guy.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
Yeah, so we sooner than later, then you might get
a little lower market value.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
That's why I think you try to go early. Jared
Goff went early. I mean they paid a lot, but
it could be worse. Like I said, up so coming
up next segment, The Giants paid Daniel Jones a couple
of years ago. What a disaster that was. We tried
to advise against it, but Daniel Jones said some stuff
this week about the Giants. It does not sound promising.
It's only getting worse for the worst team in New York.

(13:34):
That's back. That's next year on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in neon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
App Back here on the Herd. You guys know, I'm
a Jets fan, Okay, born in New York. I've never
been a follow the crowd guy. So in the eighties
the Mets were awesome with Darryl Strawberry, Doc Goodin and
those guys. They went World Series, and the Giants were
good with Phil Sims. They won a Super Bowl and

(14:04):
they had a good run. So of course I'm that
guy who's gonna go counter to everyone else. I've always
been a contrarian, so I went Jets and Yankees. Yankees
were a disaster in the eighties. They've turned it around
and done well. The Jets have not. It's been a
rough go. But I do take some glee in the
downfall of the Giants as a Jets fan, and this
Daniel Jones situation has me just constantly cackling. I don't

(14:28):
know how close to you guys have followed it, because
the Giants are among the dregs of the league right now.
They have been for some time. But let's recap just
here for a moment. So Brian Dable takes over two
years ago, and you know he comes into the building
assess is what he has. He's like, I don't have much.
What can I get out of this quarterback Daniel Jones
who was overdrafted in the first round and Daboll something

(14:49):
of a quarterback whisper turned around Josh Allen and Buffalo.
Remember he came in out of Wyoming spraying the ball around.
Couldn't throw an eight yard out, the short distance accuracy
was not there. Fixed it alim. It comes the superstar.
The rest is history. Can he do that with Daniel Jones.
So in year one, Da Boll cooks up a scheme

(15:09):
where Daniel Jones throws fifteen touchdown passes in sixteen games,
fifteen touchdown passes. But he used the running ability of
Jones and a healthy Saquon Barkley. They combined a rusher
about two thousand yards, got to the playoffs and won
a game. It was an impressive win over the Vikings
on the road. Daniel Jones threw for three hundred yards,
only his third three hundred yard passing game of the season.

(15:31):
You could see it was basically duct tape and Brian Dable.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
That was it.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
The Giants brass and this is going to be a
beautiful fight to see Brian dabole against the Giants' ownership group.
The ownership group thought, hey, we've got our guy, We've
got our quarterback. Let's lock him in, and they gave
him an insanely dumb contract of about forty million dollars
a year, which reset the market, angered teams everywhere else,
and made everybody else's price go up. Quarterbacks love Daniel

(15:58):
Jones because they all got paid because of him. So
let's fast forward to this season Daniel Jones was a
train wreck last year, early turnover machine as expected. Then
he gets hurt, surgery, blah blah blah. But everybody's out
on Daniel Jones. So what happens in the offseason is
fascinating because here we are a few months ago, Russell
Wilson unceremoniously dumped by the Broncos. Guess who had the

(16:20):
first meeting. Maybe it was just a cup of coffee.
How you doing, Russ? It was the New York Giants
kicking the tires on Russell Wilson. Then they decide he's
not for us, He's gonna go to Pittsburgh. Okay, let's
bring in Drew Lock and Drew Lock. All the quotes
are Drew Lock gonna have a chance to compete for
the job, and you're thinking, okay, they're probably just trying

(16:41):
to light a fire under Daniel Jones. Get the kid,
get those motivational juices flowing. Forget about the bank account
which is overflowing. Let's get you on the field. Let's
get back to the real two year ago Daniel Jones.
But it didn't stop there. Dave Bowl and his staff
are so out on their starting quarterback that they interviewed
seemingly every single quarterback in the draft about potentially taking

(17:04):
him to go to the Giants. Now, maybe there's some
smoke screen stuff that we're attempting to do some trading
and they're like, hey, we want a quarterback, you want
a spot, you want a quarterback, You got to come
and trade with us. Maybe there was some of that,
But folks, you know where there's smoke, there's fire. You
don't talk to Russell Wilson and then sign Drew Locke
and say he can compete and then look at almost

(17:27):
every quarterback coming out of college as a potential. Maybe
we take him guy. Okay, they had they had the
other guy last year who filled in, the very Italian
gentleman whose name I forget. He'll probably be in a
lesser football league or maybe in a beer league softball
league in a couple of years. Do you have his name, Alex,
I forget?

Speaker 5 (17:44):
Danny DeVito.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
Danny, yes, Danny, not Danny Devier. He's got forgettable.

Speaker 10 (17:51):
No, I know.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
The Divita just went for my favorite.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
He listened. That guy's gonna be playing beer league softball
in a couple years and signing autographs. Maybe he'll be
a mob movie whatever. But bottom line is the Giant
are desperate and what's shaping up in New York is
an is a is a really dangerous season for Daniel Jones.
Here he is talking about the quarterback situation.

Speaker 11 (18:12):
I mean, I wasn't fired up about it, but you
know I think that uh, you know, it's it's part
of it at this at this level. And like I said,
but you know, what I can do is focus on
myself and getting healthy, playing the best football I can play,
and then I know I'm capable of playing. So that's

(18:32):
my job. That's what I'm gonna do.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Hmmm. And you could say, Jason, come on, you're just
blowing this up because it's the Giants and you don't
like him. I mean, you guys can see what's happening.
Let's just spin it forward for fun. Okay, So let's
just say Jones is not very good. You know they
got him Elik Neighbors, the kid from LSU who's nice.
I don't see a ton of talent. Let's say they
win six or seven games, it's Brian Dable is gonna

(18:57):
probably be on the hot seat. I cannot imagine the
they would move on from him. He's a highly thought
of coach. He'd get a job in five minutes. But
at what point does Daboll start to play the game
in the media to save his hide? Hey Man, Anonymous
sources say Daboll didn't want Daniel Jones, that ownership loved
Daniel Jones, they gave him the contract. Daboll wasn't his guy.

(19:18):
How soon do we get to those ugly, ugly comments
in the media, because they're coming. That's what happens everybody.
It's called what cya cover year? You know what. That's
what's gonna happen here.

Speaker 11 (19:28):
Daboll.

Speaker 3 (19:28):
I don't want to get fired. I'm a good coach,
you guys. I got this team to the playoffs. I
got Daniel Jones to the postseason, and we want a game. Okay,
get rid of I need a quarterback. I need my guy. Now.
You could get super fascinating interesting and say, well, would
Daboll what would he do with, say Dak Prescott? Dak Prescott?
Could we We don't know what's going on in Dallas with

(19:50):
Dak Prescott. He's like Jordan Love waiting for the money.
So if I'm looking at interesting teams, we'll do it
at the top of the hour. The Giants are outside
the top five. They're an ugly watch, just brutal like
they don't they just don't have skill position guys. The
defensive line is nice and they're gonna get after the quarterback,
but they're not a top ten watch. That being said.
From a storyline perspective, the Giants for me are certainly

(20:12):
a top ten watch. Let's go to Alex Curry with
the news.

Speaker 5 (20:17):
Turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
This is the herd Line news.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
All right, well, let's keep talking some quarterbacks, but let's
talk about the number one overall pick. Because Caleb Williams
had a rough outing in practice on Thursday. Apparently he
was inconsistent all day, making some throws late and holding
onto the ball too long on other plays. But veteran
safety Kevin Byron said it's the defense's job to be
tough on Caleb and give him some encouragement after the

(20:41):
day was over, maybe.

Speaker 7 (20:43):
As hard on as possible, you know, going out there
showing some swag, talking trash, doing all that stuff, because
at the end of the day, he's gonna he's gonna
have the leaders there, you know. I Mean, that's that's
kind of how it's going to be and I said
some to an end of practice, like to keep it going.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
We're gonn can make you better.

Speaker 7 (21:01):
And you know, not necessarily saying that you had a
terrible day, but it's like days like this are going
to make you better.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
I mean, did anyone think it was going to be
that easy right out of the gates? Any time you're
transitioning from college to the NFL, this is a different game.
These are different guys, and this is a positive thing.
He should be struggling in practice. You don't want him
to be struggling in week one, Week two against the Titans, Texans.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Colts, and Rams.

Speaker 5 (21:24):
You got to get that out here in practice.

Speaker 4 (21:26):
But what I love to see is that his teammates
are a rallying behind him. Right, So, yeah, okay, you
had a tough first practice, but it's encouraging that they're
trying to lift them up and try to talk to them.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
Because remember, the.

Speaker 4 (21:39):
Bears have never had that guy at quarterback. They have
never had a quarterback throw over four thousand yards. They
have never had a quarterback throw more than thirty touchdown
passes in a single passing touchdowns in a single season.
Like it is Caleb Williams has the opportunity to like
immediately be a legend in Chicago. So there's not only

(22:02):
a lot of pressure, but you got to get that
experience in those reps in front of NFL people.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
I do wonder, do you remember how there were some
guys in the locker room, how they were saying, you know,
Justin Fields is our guy. We love them. This was
before after the season, they were caping up for Fields,
when Caleb Williams was doing his workouts. I think Keenan
Allen he was. He was He's a new guy to
the lockerow. Yes, Kevin Bayer new guy he was. I

(22:31):
think with the Eagles last year after the trade, the
new guys caping up for Caleb. What about the old
guys who have been there for a couple of years
with Justin Field's list.

Speaker 5 (22:41):
The moment, but again, they haven't had success. They didn't
have a winning season with Justin.

Speaker 4 (22:46):
Yeah, you can like them, but you also like winning
more than you like a guy. Right, and if this
is a guy that everyone's talking about, a generational talent
that can actually be that first quarterback to give the
Bears more than four thousand yards and more than thirty
passing touchdowns in a single season. They're gonna fall in
love with him really quick. You win, you're gonna win

(23:07):
the locker room, and you lose, and.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
It's gonna be tough. But also like it's not his
first few games. He could go two and two right
out of the gates.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
He got the Titans, then the Texans, Colts Rams.

Speaker 3 (23:20):
Right, so they have a those are some well Texans
defense will be tough. Titans is very winnable.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
They have a they're easing him in. It feels like
he's getting defense. He's getting eased into the NFL because
the back half is gonna be tough, and that's when
he starts to face his His division is not until
week eleven, and then it's just that's that's gonna be
real hard and hopefully he has the rookie jitters out
by then.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
That's actually a good point.

Speaker 5 (23:42):
But it's a decent start to ease him into the NFL.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
If you look at those first nine games, yeah, I mean,
I don't have the defensive stats from last year in
front of you, but I bet that Texans are the
only team there. Well, maybe the Rams had a close
to a tough tend but Aaron Donald's gone. Yeah, and
like everyone else, none of those defenses are really great.
So Caleb could have kind of a good opper to start.

Speaker 5 (24:03):
Yeah, yeah, and I.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
Would say ebra Flus's job and then less drama. Okay, yeah,
I can ride with that.

Speaker 4 (24:11):
Yeah, all right, let's move on to Denver, because the
Broncos are hoping they have their quarterback of the future
with bo Nicks Denver's twelfth overall pick. We'll be competing
with Zach Wilson and Jared Sindham for that starting spot.
Sean Payton said he is already impressed with Nix's progress.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
He's farther along than most would be. I mean, you know,
we're talking about a player's played sixty one games. He's
extremely smart. He's picked it up very quickly.

Speaker 5 (24:39):
This needs to work for Sean Payton.

Speaker 4 (24:41):
He forced the Broncos hand and they chose Sean Payton
over Russell Wilson. The Broncos are going to be paying
Russell Wilson almost thirty eight million dollars this year to
play for another team. That's a big deal. So there's
a lot on the line here for Sean Payton. Now,
Russ took a lot of the criticism last season because

(25:04):
of the season prior that he had, But now he's
out the door.

Speaker 5 (25:08):
So if this doesn't work with.

Speaker 4 (25:10):
One of these guys, all of the blame, all the
pressure is going to be on Sean Payton.

Speaker 11 (25:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (25:15):
That number is it thirty eight It's thirty seven point
eight million, So it's like about thirty eight million.

Speaker 3 (25:21):
I think they play in Week two Steelers Broncos, and
it's like, you need a motivational tactic, a russ. They're
paying you thirty eight million to play against them? Wow, yeah,
Steelers's curious, what does this mean for my guy, Zach Wilson.
Is he gonna make the team?

Speaker 5 (25:37):
Alex?

Speaker 3 (25:38):
It's still Zach Wilson for the number two spot?

Speaker 5 (25:41):
Somebody, guy, He's still He's still your guy.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
No, feel strong about it?

Speaker 5 (25:44):
What do you think?

Speaker 6 (25:45):
I mean?

Speaker 5 (25:45):
You like, probably watched him more than anybody.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
I was a big Zach Wilson fan. I was optimistic
as a Jets face I call I sat on this
couch and called him the Mormon Mahons. And you know
it took. Let's just say that didn't age.

Speaker 5 (25:59):
Well, not agent that ag well, it's just sports takes.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
It didn't imagine that. I don't know if he's gonna
make the team.

Speaker 5 (26:05):
Really, you think he's got acted to number three. I
think he's gonna be well QB three.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
They got Stidham, Yeah, two years ago. They paid him
like ten million dollars or whatever over two years. So yeah,
he's got a good chance. Listen, man, you never root
for guys to feel like or Zach's gonna be out
of the league aet like twenty five years old, toy six.
I don't know that would stink. But Nicks clearly is
the guy, and he'd be a practice squad guy. I'll
be shocked if Nix isn't starting Week one.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
Right, Okay, I mean it's John Payton's guy, and it's
if he is going to succeed, it's got to be
his guy. Yeah, which is why Russ is out the
door and Sean Payton is still in Denver. Speaking of
Russell Wilson, the Steelers brought in Russell Wilson and Justin
Fields this offseason. The expectation is that Russ will get
the starting job, but Fields has made it clear that

(26:49):
he's looking at it as a competition.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
In camp.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
Steelers legend Jerome bettis gave his thoughts on the quarterback situation,
saying that while Fields has the potential to be a
long term solution at quarterback, he would be surprised if
Russ was not the Week one starter.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
Now.

Speaker 5 (27:05):
I do believe that Russ will be the Week.

Speaker 4 (27:08):
One starter for the Steelers, but I don't think he's
going to be the starter for the entire season.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
Wait, give me your week one percentage that Russ's.

Speaker 4 (27:16):
Starter sixty five to seventy percent. It's not that it's
not that I don't don't. I don't believe that he
is going to be the full season starter. Now, the
Steelers are one of my top teams to watch the
season because of the quarterback situation. There's a lot of

(27:36):
stuff going on here right Mike Tomlin's final year on
his contract. He's never had a losing season. He has
zero loyalty to either of these guys. And if they
go on any sort of a losing streak, and they
have one of the toughest back ends of the schedule
that we have on right now, like after their Week nine,
by week all the Dames, they might not win a game,

(27:59):
Like there's a possibility they might not win a game
and I think Justin Fields, as we were just talking
about earlier, he wins locker rooms, and it's kind of
the opposite that we've heard in the past with Russell Wilson.
Lock the guys love Justin Fields. I feel like he
could win over this locker room. Russ has kind of
been a tough guy in the past that we heard

(28:20):
both in Denver and Seattle people coming out after he
left that he wasn't as accessible, he wasn't a big
locker room guy. He wasn't like someone that you could
really get to know, and that matters when you're with
a new team. And as we heard Justin Field said,
he's going into this like it's a competition, as he should.

Speaker 5 (28:38):
That's how we should be going into this.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
So, Alec, you've been in locker rooms playing sports. This
is unquantifiable. But and I know people are gonna scoff
when they hear this, but like the cool factor that
does matter. So Russell Wilson historically doesn't mess with teammates,
didn't in Seattle, certainly didn't in Denver. He's like his
own entity.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
We had carry Rhodes.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
That's what I was thinking about when he was sharing
about it.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
Brett Farv dressed in a separate area from the team, like,
that's not gonna go well. Justin Fields though, he's that guy. Yeah,
the big, strapping guy. He's been good his entire high
school college, Like the guy. I don't want to say
he's the man, but he's a guys guy. People like Justin.
There's some cool quottion. I don't I can't put a
finger on it because I'm not around Justin Fields. Yeah,
but he's got it. People gravitate toward him. If Russ

(29:25):
is not in that locker room and he's like doing
his celebrity stuff. Yeah, Alex, you can see this, players
gravitating toward Fields.

Speaker 5 (29:32):
Well, that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (29:33):
I think Fields can win the locker room over Russ
fairly easy. People like in any in any scenario, in
any like type of work that you're doing, people want
to work with people that they like. People want to
work with people that get along with. You're gonna fight
for someone that you feel a connection to, and that
was kind of the big issue with Russ. Teammates weren't

(29:53):
able to connect with them. He wouldn't even give out
his phone number, and they couldn't get a hold of him.
They had to go through the pr and to then
get to Russ like that was no knock on, like
who he was as a player on the field when
he was in his prime.

Speaker 5 (30:06):
But as you.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
Get older and as your your play declines on the field,
that's gonna that's gonna be a much bigger factor. I mean,
when you can't connect with your teammates in the locker round.

Speaker 3 (30:16):
Some of these rough stories. I mean I heard one.
I don't know that I should tell it, but like
he had a big party at his house, but he
didn't want the team to know where he lived, so
he had everybody go to like a pickup spot, and
then a bus took them on this whining room all
the way to his house, and then the bus took
people away. I don't know if that story's out.

Speaker 10 (30:34):
It's okay.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
I mean that one I understand because he has he's
married to a superstar Pops STUDI teammates, what are.

Speaker 2 (30:40):
They gonna do?

Speaker 4 (30:41):
I don't know that that I understand, But it's the
it's the more like team camaraderie, being able to connect
and call someone if you want to talk to them,
I mean, Tom Brady, that's all we ever heard about
him and.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
He is the goat.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Yeah, and he was able to connect with all of
his teammates.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
You got to be a man of the people.

Speaker 4 (30:59):
Like if you're a quarterback and you're the leader of
the team, you gotta be the leader in the locker.

Speaker 10 (31:02):
Room as well.

Speaker 3 (31:03):
I like to think of a man of the people. Alex.
You know, walk into the basketball gym and Jim mac.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
What up here we go? Number two? I have a
tali going of how many times you're gonna.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
Mention your just trying to get some of the guys
to laugh in my ear because they love what I
bring this up. Anyways, anyway, Alex with the news.

Speaker 5 (31:19):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
The Herd Line News all right, coming up, Rick Buker
stops by. You know I love it. Will we spar
with Buker over the NBA Playoffs? We'll do that next
year on the Herd.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
Paulie Foosco here with Tony Fosco, you know, as the
host of the number one rated Paully and Tony Fusco show.
We get tons and tons of fan mail every day.

Speaker 2 (31:45):
Piles of it.

Speaker 9 (31:46):
In fact, Tony, why don't you open up one of
those letters right now and read what's inside?

Speaker 6 (31:50):
Hey, listen to this. Dear Paulie and Tony, your sports
takes the dumbest and most terribly.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
Not that way this other one.

Speaker 6 (31:58):
Deea, Paulie and Tony, you suck more than anyone. What
waite yea, Paulie and Tony, you guys are the absolute best.

Speaker 3 (32:06):
There you go coming up with the stupidest take.

Speaker 9 (32:10):
Forget it, just Fusco show on the iHeartRadio app, Apple
podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 4 (32:18):
A giant trading card honoring Statchel Page was unveiled yesterday at.

Speaker 5 (32:22):
The Negro League Museum Baseball Museum.

Speaker 4 (32:24):
It's part of the Fox Sports and Fanatics promotional tour
for MLB's game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Speaker 5 (32:30):
As a tribute to the Negro Leagues. You can see
the game on Fox on June twenty.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
All right, mostly because earlier this week Nick Wright came
on here called me a chiefs hater. Uh said I
was trolling the fan base. And listen, maybe there's like
an ounce of truth to that. But yes, I went
against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl like an idiot.
And since the postseason has started and we've seen free
agency in the DRECT, I don't think the Chiefs have

(33:00):
had a great offseason. Now, you could push back and say, oh,
they go they got Hollywood Brown, Jay, what are you
worried about? Okay? If you guys think Hollywood Brown is
something special, wonderful, I think he's an okay receiver who
could stretch the field, occasionally has the drop seas and
off the field can be a disaster. Go ask the
people in Arizona. Anyway. Patrick Mahomes was talking about Kansas

(33:21):
City's schedule this week, something I've banged on this show. Listen,
I'm not gonna just hammer away at the Chiefs left
and right. Okay, I'm gonna poke some holes in the
team that's on top. Okay, they did win the Super
Bowl back to back years out I've gone on record
there's no chance that they're going to go three peet,
absolutely none, And I can see them slipping up here
struggling a bit like they did last year. The schedule

(33:43):
is brutal. Here's Patrick Mahomes talking about the really really
rough schedule. Oh, we do not have the sound for
Patrick Mahomes talking about the rough schedule. He hated the
early buye. That's something I've talked about. Now we can
at least get the schedule on the screen and the
Chiefs they got the early buy in for Fortunately it
does not line up for this team, folks. I've got
a couple things here. I know Kansas City fans are

(34:05):
gonna laugh and scuff. We're the best. We got Mahomes,
we got read. Yes, those are facts. Just gonna point
it out. Left tackle situation. The last time, by the way,
the Chiefs tat tackle issues was in the Super Bowl.
Mahomes got destroyed by the Bucks. It was a rap.
Their left tackle situation is a gentleman named jan Ya
Morris didn't play much last year final five games, I

(34:27):
believe battling a rookie from BYU. That's their left tackle situation.
Patrick Mahomes' blindside. The right tackle struggled last year a
lot Taylor. He was a penalty machine. So now you
got issues at both tackles. Loved me some Pacheco carried
me to a Fantasy championship game last year. I love him.
Kelsey's getting up there in age. I'm not gonna play
the Taylor Swift distraction card. I'm not gonna go the

(34:50):
Butcker distraction card. I'm not even gonna mention the Rashi
Rice offseason train wreck. But there are holes in this offense.
Then you look at the schedule and then, oh, by
the way, you trust in a defense losing their awesome
press cornerback Lugerious Steed. Folks, there's a world where the
Chiefs again in November. You look up, they're eight and five.

(35:14):
We lost to the Raiders. Chiefs fans just take it easy.
Three peating is damn near impossible, and it ain't happening
this year. All right, Rick Buker is ready. Let's go
to Slick Ricky, the guy who's covered the NBA forever.
Fox Sports NBA analyst Rick kind of a snoozer last
night in Boston. I'm more interested in the Jalen Browns

(35:35):
spicy this afterward. Did he get job, by the way,
on all NBA.

Speaker 8 (35:42):
Not based on look the problem that all the Boston
Celtics have. We heard Jason Tatum complain about the same
issue that they didn't They didn't have a coach of
the year. They didn't have anybody who was in the
thick of the MVP race. So but it's because they're
they have a vast array of talent, and that generally

(36:03):
happens when you have a lot of really good players
together and people have questions about your best players in
terms of their ability to come through on a consistent basis.

Speaker 10 (36:14):
And and I don't really think that they that they
got jobbed.

Speaker 8 (36:18):
If I look at the Eastern Conference and I look
at the depth of talent that the Boston Celtics had,
I don't know that they have that same record or
same standing if they were in the Western Conference.

Speaker 10 (36:31):
I took that. I think they took advantage of the
fact that they are.

Speaker 8 (36:36):
Very deep, very talented, but in the weaker the weaker conference.
So no, I don't I don't think anybody got shorted.
And I'm not going to take one game against the
Indiana Pacers by Jalen Brown as indication of otherwise.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
I'm not going to take the bait on Tatum because
anytime we we battle over Tatum, my guy Eddie House
text me Rick is such a hater. Why does he hate?

Speaker 10 (36:59):
Eddie?

Speaker 3 (37:00):
Obviously watches all the time Anyways.

Speaker 10 (37:02):
Hey, Eddie, Eddie, get in line. Brother.

Speaker 3 (37:05):
I do need to ask a legitimate question. Have we
ever seen a team with an easier path to the
finals than the Celtics not facing Jimmy Butler, Donovan Mitchell hurt,
now Halliburton's hurt. Some of the chat around of Boston,
they don't think he's gonna play in Game three in Indiana.
I mean, listen, it's all lined up for the best
team in the league record wise to get to the

(37:25):
finals for the second time in three years.

Speaker 2 (37:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (37:30):
I scoured.

Speaker 8 (37:33):
The teams that have made it to the finals one
way or the other, and I've just two thousand and seven.
The Cleveland Cavaliers went through some less than impressive teams overall,
they were either at the beginning of their run or
the end the twenty fifteen Golden State Warriors. But nothing
compares to this at this point. I just and we'll

(37:57):
see how that plays out when you get to the final,
and then you have to you do have to play
a formidable team if it turns out that way. So
sometimes that easy path is not always the best because
you get into a false sense of comfort. And I'll
be interested to see if this series becomes still competitive

(38:17):
going back to Indiana, with or without Tyrese Haliburton. Actually,
I had the sound muted on the game last night,
and so I didn't know why he was. I wasn't
didn't know about the injury. I thought he just wasn't
playing in the fourth quarter because he wasn't having any
impact whatsoever on the game, which we have seen from
Tyreese Halliburton at various times throughout these playoffs.

Speaker 10 (38:40):
And it's why, on one hand.

Speaker 8 (38:43):
I still think they can be competitive without him, because
they've often had to be with him available but not
being the Tyrese Halliburton that we've seen at times. And
on the other hand, I don't know that they have
enough to actually win the series at this point because
of Boston's death. They're just a different team. They are

(39:04):
a more talented team. They're a deeper team than what
Indiana faced against New York, particularly by the end of
that series.

Speaker 3 (39:10):
All right, let's go from the JV series to the
varsity matchup and Dallas Minnesota, which has been tremendous to
forty eight minutes. Oh my gosh, I'm gonna start with
Luka Dancic, who this week I gotta go to the
notes here. He's been compared to better than Larry Bird,
better than Dirk Noavisky, a mix of Bird and James Harden,
and I said he has better vision than Magic Johnson.

(39:31):
Am I missing anyone? Are we missing any Luca comparisons here?
I mean, I don't know what's left to say about
the guy. He is superhuman at this point.

Speaker 8 (39:41):
Yeah, and he's what He's won one game in the
Western Conference finals and we're talking about Magic Johnson who
had how many rings? Larry Bird, who had how many rings?
I mean, look, this is what we've gotten into now,
where we take guys and we just look at their
skill set and we go, oh, this guy is better
than this guy. Isn't there a certain degree of having

(40:02):
to apply that skill set and actually do something with
it before we anoint the guy as being better.

Speaker 10 (40:11):
That's the missing piece.

Speaker 8 (40:13):
I appreciate how much Luca has evolved over the course
of his career, but I don't remember Larry Bird ever
being out of shape. I'd never recall Magic Johnson being
out of shape. I mean, it's taken Luca a beat
to get to this point, and the one thing that
he has is look, he's an incredibly cerebral technical understands

(40:36):
the game. Larry Bird would be torching guys in this
era as well. It's the skill sets, the the individual
skills have certainly risen across the board, but it is
a dumb down version of the game. And because Luca
knows the game as well as he does, he's able
to do what he's doing. But let's can we can

(40:58):
we just at least get to the finals before we
start talking about guys being greater than guys that have
won multiple rings.

Speaker 10 (41:07):
That's sort of my standard.

Speaker 8 (41:09):
Maybe I'm old school in that, like, you actually have
to do the thing before we give you credit for
being able to do the thing.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
All right, listen, Rick, you are the a number one hater.
You don't like Lebron Tatum and now Luca. But I'll
just say that we don't have time to unfortunately go
dep But Larry Bird played with like seventeen Hall of
Famers in his time, Luca, Okay, anyways, final question is
Anthony Edwards.

Speaker 8 (41:32):
I don't hate you, by the way, I don't hate
either one of those guys. Okay, I'm just putting into
context what they've accomplished.

Speaker 3 (41:38):
Thirty seconds or less. Anthony Edwards, can he turn it around?
Last four games, he's not attacking the basket, He's not
been the same. Dude, Are you concerned going forward for
Anthony Edwards?

Speaker 8 (41:50):
Yeah, Look, I expect that he's going to be better
and he's going to be more aggressive. But Dallas is
going to make him think the game. They're going to
make him read and react both offensively and defensively, and
he's going to have a little more of a job
at the defensive end that he had in the last series.

(42:11):
So while I think he'll be fresher, I do think
that he's going to be tested. And then, look, he's
twenty two years old. He's just learning how to do
a lot of these things. I do think he'll be better.
I don't think that he's necessarily going to solve the riddle.

Speaker 3 (42:27):
Yeah, all right, Rick Buker, Fox Sports NBA analysts, we
love this sparring.

Speaker 7 (42:31):
Rick.

Speaker 3 (42:31):
I can't wait for you to drop by next week
or whatever it is, and we can celebrate Luka Jancic
going to the finals. All right, Rick, thanks, you got
it all right? First hour in the books. Wait until
you hear what my guy Aaron Rodgers said and it's
we're past the extremists. He's opening his mouth again. He
can't stop talking. Aaron put a cork in a buddy.

(42:52):
That's next year on the Herd.
