to The Herd podcast. Oh it is a Monday, It
(00:23):
is not any Monday. We're getting clarity in the NFL
trees everywhere on the FS one set. Happy Holidays. Yes,
it's official live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd wherever
you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks
for making us part of your day. One hour from
now Colin Wright wrong plus Matt Hasselbeck, who has been
such a great addition to the Herd. Jmac, I gotta
(00:47):
tell you a lot of blowouts yesterday. I don't know
if it was separation Sunday, but Philadelphia, you used to
live around there. They got a layers of dudes. Yea.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
They just have a coaching issue that remains.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
A problem even if you don't want to admit it. Well,
let's start with that. The Eagles are officially the strangest
great sports franchise, not just in the NFL, maybe all
of sports. Last twenty five years, they've had four coaches.
They've had Andy Reid, Chip, Kelly, Doug Peterson, Nick Sirianni.
All but one have gotten to a Super Bowl, and
they fired three of them. And if Nick Siriani lost
(01:28):
his first playoff game this year, despite his record, which
is one of the top five winning percentage records of
all time, they fire him too. And they got star receivers,
complaining players going on local radio banging on the culture.
You've got Sirianni on the sidelines getting into another beef.
They run coordinators in and out of the building. It's
twenty four to seven drama. They have all the qualities
(01:51):
of a bad or poorly run franchise, yet all the
Eagles do is win. I thought Pittsburgh's defense was great.
Then I watched Jalen Hurts yesterday nineteen completions to his
top two receivers. I mean again, Pittsburgh is well coached,
great defense. They did whatever they wanted to and they
were even good in the first quarter. The Eagles are
(02:12):
never good in the first quarter. And that's another part
about the Eagles. That virtually makes no sense, but I'm
gonna pick them to win the Super Bowl. I don't
even know what to make of them. They have the
deepest roster in the league. They have young stars, stars
in their prime, old stars. Only team in the league
that has like three levels of greatness. They have the
(02:33):
most aggressive general manager, Howie Roseman. They have the most
physically aggressive head coach, their owner occasionally Jeffrey Lourie, a
brilliant man, sometimes medals owner, GM, head coach, quarterback. It
is a lot of alpha. It is a lot of
puff in your chest out But I love their aggressiveness.
(02:54):
They don't apologize who what they are, who they are,
They don't apologize. And Buffalo, well love him, but I
don't trust him. Kansas City's barely beating anybody. They can't
protect Mahomes, Baltimore. The playoffs are their kryptonite. Detroit. I
mean they're running out of players. I'm gonna take Philadelphia.
They got five different ways to beat you. The layering
(03:17):
of talent incredible. Sirianni's opening press conference was regrettable. He
laughed at it. I think he's one of those coaches
and one of those people in America. This is not
a bad thing. He wasn't quite ready for the job.
He was bailing water, and he had to go through coordinators.
But I think he's kind of found his way between
the talk radio and that city and the relentlessly aggressive fans.
(03:40):
The city matches the team, the team matches the city.
They and because their offense is so dramatic, you overlook
their defense, which is number one and number two on
third down, and so they held the Steelers to ten
first downs. I mean they honestly, I was thinking about
this this morning. The Eagles are is basically that couple
(04:02):
that constantly argues and nobody thinks the marriage will ever
stay intact. And they just had their forty fifth wedding anniversary.
It shouldn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. They got
rookies in the secondary drama on the sidelines. Wide receivers
don't privately love the quarterback, young old, offensive line, d line,
(04:22):
crazy head coach, and it just works. And once again,
there's this scrutiny, and I'm as guilty as anybody. There's
this scrutiny around the organization because all their qualities are
what teams like Tennessee have and Carolina have and Philadelphia's
running through coaches. Who fires Andy Reid, Doug Peterson, wins
(04:44):
a Super Bowl, goes Tontoe with Brady and Belichick, and
they're always left standing and they're always winning, and the
scrutiny just piles up. And Jalen Hurts aggress that scrutiny yesterday.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
So that's what some one went to see. How the
screw who's never never ending is nothing new. So that's
something that I find the thrilling. And I appreciate being
told I can't and that we can't. And I know
that I lead this team and it takes it takes
a lot out of it. It demands a lot out
of you.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Listen, don't trust my picks, but I think Philadelphia is
gonna win the Super Bowl. And they're crazy and they're
arguing all the time, and they can't even go to
a holiday party and somebody's throwing salts at somebody else.
It just works, and they're so talented, and Jalen Hurts
has got this sort of stoicism. He's sort of this calm.
(05:39):
You know, big college programs. You know, Bama says no thanks,
Oklahoma's like, we'll take you and his personality. He always
feels like he's the cooler. Like in Vegas, they they're
the old story when somebody would get hot at the
poker table, they'd send over the cooler. Somebody with bad
luck like Jalen Hurts is the good luck, but he
(05:59):
just brings the temperature down in the room. He's the
perfect fit. It may be the most dysfunctional perfect team ever.
Good for them. So Buffalo beat Detroit. And there's a
lot to say about this game, but let me just
start by saying this. I started watching football in nineteen
seventy two. I was a little kid, and I watched
(06:21):
the first and on a black and white TV, I
watched the Washington Redskins beat lose to the Miami Dolphins
in a Super Bowl. That's the first game I remember watching.
I loved the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers in the
early seventies, and that was the first NFL game I
remember watching. And then I became like a Washington Husky fan,
and I remember for Robin Earl and Warren Moon and
(06:41):
blah blah blah. You don't care. But Josh Allen's the
most talented quarterback I've ever seen. I'll die on that hill.
Don't confuse trophies with talent. Brady's got more trophies than mahomes.
Patrick's more talented. I always thought John Elway was like
the greatest athlete. Remember he was gonna play either for
(07:03):
the Yankees or in the NFL. Greatest athlete to play quarterback.
Compared to Josh Allen, John Elway looks small and lumbering
the kids. Unbelievable. I've never seen a quarterback this good.
I mean, size are mobility eight plus plus plus plus.
It's a little Lebron in his prime. It's a little
old Tawny, It's a little tiger. Where you can put
the best athletes in the world out there, and he's
(07:25):
a notch above that. And I mean, once Buffalo finally
got a legit running back so he could take the
Superman cape off occasionally. He doesn't have any kryptonite. I mean,
since entering the NFL, he has the second most rushing touchdowns.
He's a quarterback. He has the second most rushing touchdowns.
You know who number one is a running back, Derrick Henry.
(07:46):
I mean, Buffalo is allowed eighty six points in the
last two weeks. And my take is yeah, yeah, so
what they'll get to the super Bowl because Josh Allen
in that time has ten touchdowns. I worry about their defense.
They are getting some ars back, but I'm watching Mahomes,
who's obviously so gifted, limping around. They can't protect him,
(08:07):
and I'm saying, God, he is so vulnerable this team.
Josh Allen has not taken a sack in a month.
A good luck getting a hold of him. It's week fifteen.
He looks as fresh as newly cut flowers, big strong
arm moving. You can't get to him now. You should
be able to. There's enough to grab onto, but you
(08:29):
can't sack him. So I feel like I've always said
there's one athlete in my life that I didn't get
a seat perform Sandy Kofax like one athlete. I feel
like I kind of got jipped off. I was born
too late. We're all lucky we were born in a time.
You can watch Josh Allen because I've never seen anything
like it. Again, they're missing three defensive starters. It's not
(08:51):
pretty on the defensive end, but remember that saying faster
than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a local mogative,
able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. You
remember that? Were they talking about Superman or Josh Allen?
Because as good as Mahomes is, he's not this, and
I love him. And as good as Brady was, he's
(09:12):
not Mahomes. That's the best I've ever seen For years,
I thought it was Elway. Even Sean McDermott. You just run.
Sean McDermott gets to see him at practice every day
and he's at a loss for words.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I mean, just incredible, incredible performance week after week, and
what more can you say?
Speaker 2 (09:36):
I mean, it's it's we're watching every week.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
We're watching an incredible player play incredibly consisting week after week.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
And I'll let you guys film I guess the SEMs.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
For the record, the last two weeks he's been able
to play indoors, so in a weird way, Buffalo, the
cold weather wind outdoor is a negative. Go look at
his last two weeks when he got to play indoors.
The Lions defense may beat up, Okay, it may beat up.
(10:13):
The Rams defense wasn't The Rams defense wasn't beat up.
When he's allowed to play indoors, weather's not a negative.
It's like high school stuff. It's like that Division one
high school player. He runs for two touchdowns, he throws
for two touchdowns, he catches touchdowns. Think about how great
you have to be to be a pro athlete. You
(10:33):
were the best player in your conference. Some of you,
if you ever played, were probably the best player in
your region, may have been the best player in your state.
That's how good you have to be. And what's remarkable
is the classic American story. He wasn't offered a college scholarship,
He ended up sending tapes out. He ends up at Wyoming,
(10:54):
where he was really talented but didn't get the great coaching.
And his first year in the NFL All Sorts Awards,
he was wreckless, a lot of interceptions, but you could
see this remarkable player, and now he's been transformed in
front of our eyes to however you want to describe this.
Can't take my eyes off him, I really do. I mean,
I feel like, with Detroit faulding apart, Philadelphia and Buffalo
(11:17):
with Mahomes limping and the Lions faulding apart, so much
of this league is attritionan And I know, I know
Philadelphia probably is favored because they have the better defense,
but I would sign up for Eagles Buffalo Bills today.
Yesterday Jim Nance said this is America's team. I don't
think he's wrong. It's not the Cowboys. I mean it's
(11:38):
I'm not even gonna mention them in the first hour today.
I have nothing on my show today to mention the Cowboys.
If they come up, it's an accident. If that's the
America's team, I'm for it because he's a great American
athlete and a great American story. J Mack, I know
recency biased, but when you watch in the last two
weeks playing indoors, that Rams defense is pretty good.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Yeah, yeah, you all so mentioned. The Lions are banged up.
Just breaking here in the last five minutes. It reports
are out that David Montgomery, the hammer running back of
the Lions mcl injury, could be lost for the season.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Wow, just came out.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
So Gibbs is a little bit of the lightning.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
He's awesome. Montgomery got what was yesterday.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
So much we talked about this. Remember the year Mahomes
got to the Super Bowl and had neither one of
his starting tackles. It feels like Detroit can win one way. Now,
wild shootout and your Packers you talked about them in
the offseason. They looked spicy last night. Oh my gosh,
they'd become a little bit of a power running team.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
I would be afraid of that team.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
I'll tell you who. I'd be afraid of. Baker in
the bush. Yeah, I would want no part of the Buccaneers.
Can't run on him, can't guard Mike Evans. Baker's playing
at his best, a little reckless, but with house money
because nobody thinks they're going to win. Jason light has
stayed that roster for years. The GM one of the
(13:01):
best scouts ever in the league. Yeah, I would not
if I'm Philadelphia. I mean, by the way, I didn't
taking the last team to beat Philly. I mean, I
mean they've given Detroit, Philly, Kansas City. They've given everybody troubles.
I mean what they did to the Chargers yesterday. It
was the number one defense in the league, dropped a
forty burger in LA. That was wow. That was a
(13:23):
wow outcome.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
NFC kind of after the Eagles, there's like five or
six teams down with the Lions injured.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
I don't know it's Washington in that group. Are they close? No?
Speaker 1 (13:31):
I think listen I think Darnold and the Vikings and
Baker and the Bugs will be underdogs in these playoff games.
But there's something about Tampa's ability to defend the run.
You cannot So now the Lions are down to one
running back, you will not run on Tampa.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And also, we got to get the Rams some credit there.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
They're they're coming hard, and you know, Smith goes down
and you don't want to see that Rams offense in
the postseason. Oh boy.
Speaker 6 (13:53):

Speaker 8 (14:29):

Speaker 1 (14:32):

Speaker 1 (14:59):
So like bistically, nobody now recovers on side kicks, and
it was always a low percentage. But the key to
a trick play is the trick part is the surprise element,
and now you don't have that anymore with the on
side kick. Now, I don't think they were gonna win
this game because they're missing so many defensive starters. They
(15:21):
can't stop anybody. They couldn't stop Green Bay, they can't
stop Buffalo. I don't think they were gonna win the game.
But I said this last week and I'll say it again.
At some point, you've got to pivot. Detroit is no
longer the hunted. They are the hunter. Things change, they're
(15:41):
the favorite. They're more IBM than a startup. You got
to move to a new way of seeing the world.
And by the way, they have thirteen defenders in the
IR So the bigger problem is Dan Campbell now doesn't
trust his defense, and so I think it's made an
aggressive coach a little hyper aggressive because he knows they
(16:02):
can't make stops, especially against Josh Allen. So I do
understand where he's going. But there were moves to be
made earlier in the game and this was not one
of them. So their season feels like it's fading fast
and they're getting desperate. And now you've got word j
Mack just said this. David Montgomery, one of their two
excellent running backs, suffering an mcl injury. He may be gone.
(16:27):
Will that create more desperation? Here's Dan Campbell on an
ill timed on side kick that went backwards.
Speaker 9 (16:36):
I thought we were gonna get that ball, and it's
one of Bates's best kicks that I've seen him have.
That was that was a big kicker at the end.
You know, I think took a good jump on us,
and Hollis made a heck of a play on it.
And you know, obviously now sitting here hindsight after them
taking it down to the three yard line, Yeah, I
wish I wouldn't have done that, but it is what
(16:57):
it is.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Listen, he's sitting there thinking, Okay, we're within ten. If
we return the on side kick, we get it down
to three because they were moving the ball, and then
it's anybody's game. Like I get it with the old
on sidekick format, but the new one, you have to
announce it. Everybody knows it's coming. You put on the
hands team and you see what happens. It's just something
(17:23):
most coaches wouldn't do. And it's not that surprising him
an outcome because you know what's coming and you've never
had less surprise in a play that is basically it's
number one. Gotcha is the surprise part of it? And
that's gone. Jmack with the news.
Speaker 6 (17:42):
No, no, no, this is the Herdline news all right,
But man, let's start with more injury news.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Man NFL walking mood and that's Patrick Mahomes. He left
midway through the fourth yesterday after getting.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
Twisted up here. It did not look hobbled off. He
hobbled out of the locker room afterward. I'm sure everybody
saw him get on a cart. And his backup is
Carson Wentz. Now the Chiefs have a three game in
eleven day stretch. Chiefs fans don't blame anybody except the NFL. Okay,
(18:16):
they need you on Christmas Day, Colin. Here's my homes
on his injury.
Speaker 10 (18:21):
Usually it's kind of the day after and you kind
of get a good sense of it. But I feel
like I could have finished the game in different circumstances.
But I thought the smart decision I think we talked
about was to put Carson in, and he's played a
lot of football and he finished the game. Well, now
we'll just get after the rehab part of it and
try be ray for next week.
Speaker 5 (18:39):
So the line has been adjusted. The Chiefs are favored
over the Texans now Houston minus two and a half
in Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
We care Saturday game.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
Carson Wentz can play a little after that.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
The Chiefs have Christmas Day Wednesday against the Steelers. Again,
you're not looking at the MRI. You're not in the
room with the doctor for Holmes.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
But at some point you got to say, hey, listen,
we got a left tackle issue.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
No DJ Humphreys right, they had.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
I think they kicked the guard out to tackle who
played pretty well by Colin.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
This is a rough stretch here.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
I don't know I would if it were me, I
would consider resting the Homes against the Texans, but I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
I would come at the end. I would rest him
against the Texans and TJ. Watton the Steelers. Well, the
concern there is if you lose both and the Bills
win and you end up tied, Buffalo has the tiebreaker.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
They then have home till the vantage. Chiefs fans will say, well,
we didn't have it last year. We're fine. I think
every Kansas City fan this team is not as good
as last year.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
I think they can absolutely beat Houston. I mean Houston. Honestly,
I don't know what they are. I can't figure them out,
and I forget about betting. I just can't figure them out.
I think they're well coached. I like their quarterback. They've
got some good players, So I don't know. Week to
week in a weird division, I don't know what I
get with Houston. I have a hard time thinking Carson
(19:56):
Wentz with that defense. I think I think Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
They could take us to win that game. You ten
six or whatever. Yeah, Houston C.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
I mean I had them against Miami and they covered.
But just watching them, it feels like their offense is
kind of broken. Did you see Joe Mixon had twelve
carries for twenty three yards? The Texans leading rusher with
some big running back who on a fake punt went
like for thirty five yards.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Yeah, Mixing got banged up.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
So Houston does not look sharp off that.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Oh they listen. We a lot of people talked about
sophomore slump, a year of regression. Everybody's got tape on CJ.
Stroud that could possibly be it. Also, I think the AFC, now,
I mean, just be honest, Denver's better. The Chargers are better, Like,
I mean, there's a lot of deep Pittsburgh's better. So
I think the AFC, you got a lot of better
(20:44):
on good teams. So I don't think they're necessarily much worse.
I just think there's been injuries again the second year
for quarterbacks, everybody knows what you are now, it can
be tough.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
I'll say this.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
The Texans fans listening, Bobby Slowick has regressed considered as
an offensive coordinator this year. His sequencing is just I
don't want to call it trash, but it is very bad.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Colin. Like he's running all the time into stack boxes.
They're going nowhere, Colin.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
They had less than I think two hundred yards offense
yesterday against Miami. Yes, Stroud had one hundred and thirty
yards passing. That was it.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
That's not gonna cut it. I don't know. I'm concerned
for Houston. Doesn't look good.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
I mean, let's be honest. Though they got ahead of
schedule last year. True, right, we thought they were in
a total rebuild and they made the playoffs. Let's let's
not compare them to a Philadelphia Buffalo. I think they're
still in a rebuild, right.
Speaker 5 (21:34):
But remember they went out and got digs and then
he got hurt. That was like a Hey, that's our
that's our shot. Like, I don't know, it's just disappointing
if you're a Houston fan.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
Next up, Hey, we got to talk about your guy.
How about your man, man Nick? What an up and
down game he had yesterday. I love him.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
I'm not gonna be negative I'm not going to reference
the three interceptions there one ONFS one or the seventy
five yards passing midway through the first.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
How was he late?
Speaker 1 (22:00):
My?
Speaker 2 (22:00):
All the matters, that's all the matters.
Speaker 5 (22:02):
They got the win they had I believe, one hundred
and ninety three yards of offense.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
But let's hear Sawn Peyton talk about QB one bo Knicks.
Speaker 11 (22:10):
In a game like today, we were felt like, you know,
down there for a while, especially the first half, and
you know, good teams respond on a day like today,
And I mean, you know, good teams find ways to
win and playoffs. Team find ways to win these close ones.
And I felt like that's what we did. So it's
a sign of a good football team. And we have that.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Sean Payton Coach of the Year. Can we be honest now? Well,
when I suggested in the preseason, little old humble American
honesty brokers suggested they'll double the win total of Vegas.
Suggests Vegas had five wins, I said, I think they're
an eight to nine team. The defense is now for real.
(22:51):
They have a real pass rush and bo Nicks wasn't
great early, but either as Anthony Richards and the difference
is after half one of them rebound and that you
got to give. And I got nothing against Diichen, but
say this for bow Nicks, he remained aggressive. Sean Payton
never loses confidence. He's a rookie quarterback. I'll take bow
Nicks making mistakes. They don't Sean Payton never shows a
(23:15):
loss of confidence with him. They'll throw it down the field.
He's not dinking and Duncan. He's throwing that ball down
the middle of the field all the time.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
I feel like we probably should mention that Jonathan Taylor play.
I don't know if we have video, Collin. I was
on the Colds yesterday. They're up thirteen to seven, th
control the first half times.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
I'm then Taylor breaks off a forty yard touchdown that
looks like it's a lock. He's rolling in and he
does the stupid thing. This is a veteran, not like
a first or second game guy. I was funny because
I was telling my buddy John Middlecoff. I never viewed
Jonathan Taylor as one of those guys. Yeah, Like I've
never seen him as immature, squirrely a taunter. I've always
(23:52):
seen him as like smart, veteran dependable. It's like, oh,
now I have to put him in that camp of
the guys. You can't try one of those guys.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
They were thirteen seven.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Oh, they were controlling the football to be twenty to seven. Yes,
you know, Bonnicks have been throwing there and he's been struggling.
And because of that fumble, Denver gets the bull gets
the ball back and the scoring run after that fumble
was twenty four to zero for den Denver Colts were
resorted to trick plays. I've never seen a trick play
like the throwback. They melted as a team.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Benito was sitting on it that Shane Stikeen, I think
you got a question a lot of things. Listen, I've
defended Anthony richardson Colin. I know you watched thatcond clothing.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
No, no, I don't think I don't. I'll say this, I.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
Don't know what the hell he's doing.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
I mean, I don't know if he's an NFL starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Yeah, I t have my death.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
He's an NFL athlete. You want to give guys a chance, right, No, No, no,
I mean we're we got multiple games here.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
Yeah, five turnovers for the team and he was almost
around as you and I have both said this.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
The Colts roster they got, dudes. I mean, that's as
frustrated as Denver has been in two months. They were
in control of that game. They not only were in control,
they were flummixed. Bo Nicks was lost and it looked
like they were playing with extra mend Defensively, Denver couldn't
do anything, and so it's like the Colts don't have
a roster issue. They got that is a good roster.
(25:11):
They got a quarterback, Yere.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
I'll say this, if Buffalo somehow gets the one and
Denver faces Casey in the first round, that would be
really really fun because that's those have been really good
games historically.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
I don't think it'll happen a long time. Anyways.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Final story, Colin is college football. We you know, we
kind of discussed the Heisman Trophy last week. We didn't
discuss it. You argued, I thought it.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Was a fun, healthy discussion. Anyways, you were right.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
Travis Hunter got the dub but it was the closest
race since two thousand and nine. Travis Hunter got five
hundred and fifty two first place votes. Ashton je Dy
Boys he got three zero nine. Hunter only won by
two hundred fourteen points. You see the voting on the
screen there, Listen, I.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Love me some cam wored How on earth do you
give him six first place votes like that could have
swung the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
And Dylan, who's really good with.
Speaker 5 (26:01):
Oregon close race. I do still think Afton gent got jobbed. Obviously,
Travis Hunter is a superstar. Well take it away.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
I think the first two players are going to be
tremendous NFL players. I think Travis Hunter now receivers make
more than corners, so he's gonna want to be a
receiver in the NFL. I think he could be a
top corner in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
He's a good kid.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
I hear nothing but good things about him.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
You know.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
It's funny. Colorado's got a little flash to their program.
But I trust my executives that I talk to, and
they like Shador and they like Travis Hunter. They're good kids,
and I think he's going to be a Sauce Gardner
level corner. But he's so gifted that you'll probably have
to put him on some offense. I mean, unlessen go
to a bad team. So if you're the New York
Giants or you're the raiders and you got him, you'd
(26:46):
play him on both ways. I would. I would put
him at now. Now, what's hard is when you have
a quarterback. Quarterbacks don't want to have a receiver that's
a part time receiver. So he can't be a number
one receiver in the NFL. He may not be a
number two, but I would he is such a gifted player.
And by the way, the running back from Boise State
is great. He did have six touchdowns and almost three
hundred yards against Georgia Southern. He's a very good player.
(27:08):
He's a first round running back. My argument last week
is who you play matters in college football? And how
do I know that? Because the Big Ten has what
four teams in the playoff and the ACC has two? Like,
who you play in college football matters, it doesn't in
the NFL. You win your division, you get a playoff race,
you get a playoff spot.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
So I'm gonna I'm excited for you to ask some
of these coaches and guests we have on the show,
is playing two ways wide receiver quarterback is that even
feasible in the NFL?
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Because think about this, Travis Hunter.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Let's say he's lining up on defense he's got to
go tackle Derrick Henry and then he's got.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
To go out and catch passes like three minutes later.
That's well. Is it a little like Otani? You can
do both, but the Dodgers want him to go to
the bullpen. The Dodgers want him to hit. Okay, we
can ask you out of the bullpen. We don't want
you to be a starter. For the Angels. It was
such a novelty and they don't draw like the Dodgers.
The Angels are like starting pitching back clean up the
(28:03):
really good organization. The Dodgers go, we'll have you bat.
You can do some pitching. We'd prefer you don't. But again,
Travis Hunter's not going to the Dodgers. He's gonna go
to a bad football team that needs him. So I
think they're gonna let him do both. You can do
both ways in college. It's not I would say it's
way easier than the pros. Do you know how harded
it the physical nature of the NFL to go out
(28:24):
and defend Superstar.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
You're gonna go to defend Mike Evira Jefferson.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
Yeah, and then you gotta go tackle Aaron Jones in
space and then the next day, Hey, go run a
fifty yard go route Like that's just not well, I
think again possible. I think a lot of it is quarterback.
So let's say, for instance, he goes to the Raiders
and the Raiders go get Sam Darnold. Sam Darnald is
not gonna make a part time wide receiver his number
one because that's all timing. So I think, especially if
(28:50):
you get receivers that have been around the league. It's like, dude,
Tom Brady wouldn't let Garoppolo take snaps in New England.
Tom wouldn't throw it to a young receiver because he
didn't try. So being a part time receiver is hard, Yes, so.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
What are you gonna do.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
You're gonna be in the wide receiver room and then
sprint to the quarterback room and learn what's going on there,
and there certain packages for the I just it sounds
fun playing two ways, but I don't think it's realistic.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Let's ask the coaches.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Let's see what they said, all right, Jmack with the news.
Speaker 6 (29:17):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
Okay, Green Bay's for real and Baker and the Buccaneers
you want no part of them, and Joe Burrow unloads
on his head coach Carson Palmer on our show Friday,
told you Carson Palmer's body language. He is not healthy.
Carson Palmer got out of there. Didn't want the cheap owner.
(29:44):
That Joe Burrow stuff is real. He's letting you see
it on camera. He not hiding that stuff behind the scenes.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Easter nine am Pacific Fox College Tubes.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
Friday takes over prime time as Saint John's Rick Patino
leads the Red Storm against Providence in a big East battle.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
It all tips off Friday at eight Eastern on fire Well.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
First two drives for green Bay last night up in
the Pacific Northwest, they eate up ten minutes of clock.
They took a lead, game was over and with the
Lions now Montgomery may not play for the rest of
the year, the running back. They're losing multiple defensive players.
I think Green Bay is the biggest obstacle for the
Philadelphia Eagles to get to the Super Bowl. If you
(30:34):
did any reseeding, I do Philly one in green Bay two.
Detroit's falling apart, the Rams feel like they're one more
draft away the Vikings. Sam Darnold's never been to the playoffs.
I find the Packers so easy to root for. They're
such a smart, well run business, youngest team in the league.
They develop quarterbacks better than any organization in the history
of the National Football League. There's no crazy owner. You
(30:56):
get incredibly high efficiency and virtually no ego. The Josh
Jacobs move is just so green Bay. Like everybody a
year ago is like, stay away from running backs, and
green Bay said, no, no, We're gonna go get Josh
Jacobs from the Raiders. And we like Aaron Jones, but
(31:16):
we think he is peaked and we want to power
running back, which is obviously so they're less reliant on
Jordan Love, who they love, and they've developed to throw
thirty times a game, so now Jordan Love can throw
when he wants to throw, not absolutely has to throw.
So the Josh Jacobs move, it's so smart, it's so
(31:37):
green Bay. It's not that they don't love Jordan Love,
but the Packers never put their quarterbacks in position to fail.
They always higher offensive coaches. You can never I mean,
let's be honest about it. They always protect their quarterbacks,
second few of sacks allowed in the NFL. Jordan Love,
they just have figured this league out. And you can
(31:59):
say far have only got one ring and Aaron Rodgers
only got one ring. You know what, go ask Buffalo,
You'll take one ring. Go ask Minnesota that's had many
good teams. So and I just look at Detroit falling
apart and the Rams being still a year away. In
my opinion, they need another draft tackle, a corner, a
(32:20):
perimeter receiver, maybe more depth at the linebacking corps. I
think Green Bay's got it all. And again, so much
of this league is attrition. Are you healthy when it matters?
Isn't it crazy that the Packers may open with a
road game in the playoffs. I just I thought they
imposed their will on Seattle, a team that had been
(32:43):
playing well. And here was Jordan Love after, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
I feel really good. I think we're in a really
good spot.
Speaker 12 (32:49):
I think we got to do the same thing we've
talked about all season, just take it one game at
a time and finish the season.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Off, and you know, maybe we're going to be for playoffs.
Speaker 12 (32:57):
But I like where we're at, and we just got
to keep figuring out ways to get better, keep keep
pushing each other and find ways to get these wins
to end the season off. But I like we wrap now.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Think about this here. This is green Bay. Remember Jordan Love.
He sat for three years and then his first six starts.
Even Matt Lafleur was like, Eh, this isn't great. Other
organizations would have asked Jordan Love to play first year
out of Utah State, would have had a bad offensive line,
would have had no run game. Green Bay because Jordan
(33:32):
Love wasn't ready to play, green Bay drafts him, lets
him sit behind a legend. By the time he takes over,
they've got all the components to win. They draft him
young receivers and tight ends who he can grow generationally with.
They get him as they always do, a good old line,
and then the next step is Josh Jacobs. I can't
(33:53):
tell you I'm not saying Jordan Love's not talented. It's
not what I'm saying. This kid just start in green Bay.
Half the teams in this league would have screwed up
Jordan Love play day one, no protection. Defensive coach. Green
Bay's like steps, sit and learn exhibition. Now you start
(34:18):
draft young people with him. Offensive coach o line. Now
get him a power running back. Every step of the way.
Green Bay's done what the Packers, ohays do Nobody does
it better than the Packers. This kid is talented. Half
this league minimum would have screwed him up. And now
(34:39):
I think they're the second best team this morning in
the NFC. All Right, I know a lot of you
think I don't like Baker Mayfield, but I can say
this full disclosure. I offered him a job a year ago.
I'm a little podcast company. I think he's going to
be a great broadcaster if he wants to. He passed,
he declined, totally get it. But I'm watching him. It's perfect.
(35:02):
He's got the grit and he's a perfect fit. This
This team's great for him. I would not want any
part of Tampa in the playoffs. I mean, didn't they
beat Philly in Detroit? Didn't they take Kansas City to overtime?
I mean what they did to the Chargers yesterday. The
number one defense took him apart in LA I mean
took them apart. You can't run on them because of
(35:23):
it a via. You can't run on them. Yet they
can run on you because they have an excellent GM.
They have multiple Jmax touched on this a couple months ago.
They have multiple running backs. You can't cover Mike Evans
as he ages gracefully. He and Baker are totally connected
at the hip. Tristan Wurfs now is the highest grated
left tackle pass blocking and this team's gonna play with
(35:45):
house money. So the best Baker is Olways Baker with
a chip on his shoulder that is Tampa. I would
not be surprised at all. Listen, they could host Green
Bany in a playoff game. If I'm Green Bay, I
want no part of that. It is scary to face
a team that is really good, getting healthy and they're
(36:07):
playing with house money. Like you know, And I said
this when Baker went to Tampa. I said, Baker's got
an eboors city feel to him. That's a that's a
fun part of Tampa, kind of a party area. And
I said, Baker, you know, he's bounced around the league
a little bit, but we know we can play. It's
never been a question if he can play. But there's
a little bit of a rebel, a little bit of
(36:28):
an outlaw to Baker. And I've always felt there's a
little bit, you know, Tampa's a legendary mob city. Tampa's
had its own little It's like a It's on the
fringes of the NFL, but it's in the NFL. And
I just think he is such a good fit for them.
And when he signed the contract, I said, I would
absolutely give Baker a three or a four year contract.
I'm not going to pay him sixty million, but I'd
(36:50):
pay him thirty five thirty eight million bucks. And I'm
watching them yesterday, this Chargers team. You don't move the
ball like that on them, and they went up and
down the field that it wasn't really competitive, and a
lot of it is just Baker's swagger and his confidence
in the run game, and they protect him. And here's
(37:10):
Baker after.
Speaker 13 (37:12):
Offensive line took over, and that was really the biggest
difference there. In the second half, those guys played unbelievable
upfront and defense. You know, comproimenter football game. That's a
physical football team. That's what they pride themselves on is
rushing the ball and being physical. And so to flip
the script on that is huge for us.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
Last ten weeks. Think about this j MAC the last
ten weeks because they were all banged up early. Tampa's
got the number one offense in the league. Can't run
on them. They'll run on you best left tackle. Look
at Baker's number yesterday against the number one defense twenty
two of twenty seven, passer rating of one thirty five eleven.
(37:49):
And Baker's not a dink and dunk guy. Baker's gonna
throw it down the field. And he's got a little reckless.
He and Darnold both have a little reckless. That's okay,
mahomes as ugly picks. There's no this is not too
everything's not underneath, Everything's not a bubble screen. I mean,
I can't even watch Miami. I can't take Miami seriously.
If it's you know, under seventy four degrees, it's dink
(38:10):
and dunk circus. I'm watching Baker. He is letting it
rip down the field. I would have no somebody's gonna
be an upset in the first round of the playoffs.
Whoever Tampa plays right now, Green Day would have to
go to Tampa. Yikes, yikes? Am I wrong on that?
Speaker 4 (38:31):
Right?
Speaker 5 (38:33):
I don't totally disagree with that. I'll take it a
next step. Who's having a better season so far? Baker
Mayfield or Patrick Mahomes. Take your time on this.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
It's not easy.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
I know.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Patrick Mahomes has won the Super Bowls and every piece. No,
but just this season.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
No, it's Baker Mayfield has been a consistently more productive quarterback.
Now he also has the best left tackle in football.
And Mahomes is getting hit. The story behind Mahomes isn't
just the injury. Nobody is touching Josh Allen. Mahomes has
been getting tagged all year and this league. I mean
(39:07):
the Kansas City team that went to the Super Bowl
and got blown out, they had the same issue. Okay,
so you know, once you pay Mahomes what you pay him,
it gets very hard to win in this league. You
have to be very shrewd. It's very hard to pay
for elite left tackles and elite Chris Jones and Travis
Kelcey and Mahomes. That's why the Chiefs are constantly in
(39:27):
flux at wide receiver. You just can't pay a number one.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
Where Rappaport has the breaking news on Patrick Mahomes. It's
a mild high ankle sprain considered week to week.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
That's for I and Rapaport. Moments ago, I think you
play Carson Wentz against Houston. If you win, you play
Carson Wentz at Pittsburgh. Remember, yeah, you could play Pittsburgh
and Denver in the playoffs. I would rather you see
Carson Wentz. Yeah, I don't want to give anything away.
I mean you can literally open with Pittsburgh. Wh why
(39:59):
would I want to show? So my take, if Carson
Wentz can beat Houston, just play him again the next week. Now,
Mahomes will be fighting like mad to get out there,
but I would I would give him a couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
So the other thing is Casey could really use that
by right with the number one seed. That would be massive.
You get some extra rest for well, if they lose
to Houston, they're playing Mahomes, then they're not going to
lose the number one seed. They want to be at Area.
So you're forcing a dinged up Mahomes out there behind
a shaky left tackle situation. I know toy Toony was
good like yesterday, but it's still a shaky situation out there,
and that is TJ what. Hopefully he's healthy, he got hurt.
(40:30):
A lot of injury injuries around the league yesterday were brutal.
Lot and Nick Chubb got hurt, went down. Sounds like
his season's over. But it feels like Detroit.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Oh, it just stinks.
Speaker 11 (40:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
If they make the super Bowl, it would be unbelievable
at this point with the I injury.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
I don't like their chances now.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
I think I saw twelve guys on IR.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
I thought was thirteen, could have been.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
It's a thirteen.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
Oh my gosh, all right, Colin Wright, Colin wrong plus
