Lots to talk about live in Los Angeles. It's The
Herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Thanks for making us part of your day. One hour
from now, The Herd Hierarchy Nick right today, Eric b
Enemy in studio, can't wait to talk to Eric Bnemy, Maholmes,
(00:45):
Andy Reid, Belichick in college. Can't wait for that in
a couple of hours. Jmac, I don't even want to
talk about Raiders Falcons. I'll bury that one. Why not
eight people watched it? But I think what we watched
last night you could eat in the ballguage. It was visual,
it was obvious. The Chicago Bears are a broken franchise. Okay, Vikings,
(01:09):
We'll get to that in a bit, but this is
a broken franchise. Gise in Chicago, the ownership, bottom three
team president, a young general manager, hit and miss if
he left, fine, if he stayed, okay, coaching staff, none
of it works, none of it. Yeah, they got some
decent players. The Jets have all sorts of good players.
They're four and ten. And Caleb Williams, who was privately
(01:33):
concerned before the draft but didn't want to be a
bad guy. This was his nightmare. They have no leadership
top down. By the way, how do you fix it? Well,
the only way to fix it go to the Chargers,
who also had a really good young quarterback, hit a
handful of really really good players, and they went and
(01:57):
stopped screwing around and finally paid big money for a
coach fifteen year, fifteen million dollars a year, Jim Harbaugh.
And they have not regretted a second of it. They
had a bad culture why, most notably, they had a coach,
Brandon Staley, that was completely over his skis, just like
(02:19):
the Bear staff. You can't blame Thomas Brown. I mean,
he's had three different parking spots in the organization in
four weeks. They keep moving him up with the foodja
and he's not ready for this stuff. He'll be fine,
He'll have a nice career. There is only one answer
to this. It's Mike Vrabel. That's it. There're no other answers,
no more lightweights, no more coordinators. This lift is too big.
(02:41):
Even with Vrabel. I'm not sure it can solve everything.
But this is an organization and frankly a city that's very,
very political, and the only times in the history of
Chicago sports or politics that you've ever had great success
is with strong, defiant leadership. Look at the history of
(03:03):
the city sports. You had theo Epstein all right and
Mike Ditka, all right. You start looking around from politics
to sports. That's Chicago's answer. Rabel's it. There's nobody else
out there. There's nobody else at no college guys, no
lightweight coordinators. The job's too big. And like the Chargers,
(03:26):
the Chargers at least, that's why I think this is
a big lift. I'm not sure if Rabel consultant. The
Chargers have always been good at quarterback. I mean it
was Dan Fount who I grew up watching, Breeze Rivers, Herbert.
They've always been high octane, fun to watch. And it's
not like the Spanos family. They had a reputation as
being frugal. They weren't crazy, they weren't meddling. They were frugal.
(03:46):
They no longer are. They finally just said sometimes in
life you just have to admit I got to get
out of the way. And the Spanos family said, you
know what, We're giving it to Harbaugh, and Harbaugh's going
to build a staff and he's going to call the
DC the general man. And they just got out of
the way and it works, and that's the only way
to do it. I think this is a much bigger lift,
(04:07):
much much bigger lift than the Chargers job. Like when
they hired Harball, we all kind of knew, oh yeah,
I go in ten eleven games, they may make the
playoffs and they're going to Okay, we could feel that,
but this one is the division is really good with
really good coaches. You could have had Cliff Kingsbury, you
couldn't get out of the way. You could have had Harball,
(04:29):
Kevin Warren couldn't get out of the way. There is
only one way to solve this thing. I mean, you
won the Bryce Young trade and you're only one game
better than Carolina and it was the steel of the decade.
So it's not and it's just not a quarterback thing.
And let me give an example. And I and for
the television audience, you'll understand this. Radio is a little
harder to follow. But if you look at every division
(04:51):
in football not named the AFC, South Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Baltimore,
Kansas City, Rams, Tampa, Detroit, Philly, Washington, I can argue
all have either the best owner, the best front office,
or both. It's not just the quarterback and coach, although
(05:11):
they are really important. It all starts upstairs. Bills owner,
front office excellent, Lions front office excellent, Kansas City all
of the above, Washington flushed, all the losers out have
much better people in Rams, Stan kronk less sneed like
it's just a scouting department. You can just keep blaming coaches,
(05:34):
you can keep running around. This organization is broken. Vrabel
is the only answer. I feel bad for Caleb Williams,
but this is what he was worried about privately out
here in Los Angeles. My people connected to him said,
you're not going to be a bad guy, but man,
look at their history. They've never had a four thousand
yard passing quarterback. That's why I said the Chargers are
(05:57):
a little bit. You can kind of look at the
Chargers and go, well, look what they did. They got
out of the way and got hardball. But the Chargers
had never been this dysfunctional. They just lost a bunch
of close games. They always developed quarterbacks, They had a
bunch of good players in the ownership group was not meddling.
I don't know if you can fix Chicago. Some things
(06:17):
are unfixable. Vrabel's the only answer. Here's Caleb after.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
It's been frustrating and encouraging. The frustrating part is, obviously we.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Were on a.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Coming games now eight yeah, eight game loser streak, and
that's not, like I've said before, It's new to me.
I haven't experienced anything like this. So their encouraging part
is how much we fight as a team.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Okay, so let's just talk about the Vikings again. Raiders Falcons.
I can't put that in the first segment. So Sam Donald,
Minnesota has a tough decision. I would franchise Sam Donald,
keep him around. But they brought Daniel Jones in, they
drafted JJ McCarthy. It is likely that they're gonna let
Sam Arnold become, you know, a free agent and here's
what's really interesting. I love Donald. You know that, first
(07:06):
of all, his success is a total indictment on the
Jets in Carolina. I mean Aaron Rodgers' career since you
went to New York circled the toilet. Okay, So Sam
Darnold is only twenty seven years old. So somebody's going
to get a very good quarterback in his prime. Big strong, mobilemaker, playmaker,
coachable kid. Here's the thing, though, You're not gonna get
(07:29):
this good of a Sam Darnold because you know, I
don't even have to tell you this coaching is not
even in this league. I mean it the gap between
a McVeigh and a Kevin O'Connell, Andy Reid, Sean Payton offensively,
and the rest of the league or most of the
rest of the league is the Grand Canyon. All that said,
(07:52):
you're not gonna get Kevin O'Connell, You're not getting Justin Jefferson,
you're not getting Jordan Addison. The old line is underrated it.
This is a perfect scenario for Sam. And I look
around at all the teams that could get Sam Darnald
and I'm like, ugh, ugh, there's one exception. There's one exception.
(08:16):
The Indianapolis Colts. Anthony Richardson's had fourteen starts. He completes
fifty percent of his throws. It's a hard decision. Sometimes
you just got to say it's not working. The Colts roster,
like the Vikings, above average. Colts have good receivers, not
Justin Jefferson, good receivers. They're on line top ten to
(08:38):
twelve in the league. Their defense go as Bow Nicks
and Sean Payton. Their defense had the game won. Jonathan
Taylor had a goofy decision and fumbled away the game,
but he's an excellent running back. There is one place
where Sam Darnald can go, and it's gonna look closest
to this. It's in the very winnable AFC South. It's
(09:01):
not a great ownership division. Even in Indie. It is
wonky and winnable, and you'll get about eighty five percent.
You don't get a Justin Jefferson. You're not getting him
all right, that he is just different. But I'm watching
this last night and I think they've got a very
tough decision to make. But he's only twenty seven years old.
(09:23):
Sam's got three to four years prime. That'll be the
length of his contract, and I think Minnesota's gonna let
him go. I think I try to franchise him, but
if they don't, coaching in this league is not even.
But going from Kevin O'Connell to the Colt Shane Steichen,
that's as well as Sam Darnald can do. Michael Pittman,
(09:43):
he played with him at USC, good old line, nice roster,
Sam Donald, Colts, you would get the closest version of
Vikings Sam Donald. I don't think Minnesota is a super
Bowl team, but I do think. I do think what
you're seeing between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold is this
(10:04):
rebirth of really talented quarterbacks, and it is an indictment
of the Cleveland Browns. It is an indictment for both
of them. With Carolina, it's an indictment of the Jets. Ownership, GMing.
Coaching is not close to equal in this league. So
Donald's gonna either keep flourishing for the Vikings or potentially
flourish for the Colts. And I folks, if you watch
(10:27):
Denver and the Colts, Bo Nicks is right out of
college second half. That's an NFL franchise quarterback. Colts don't
have one took a swing. Young kid. Nice kid doesn't work.
J Mack. We got so many things going on today,
so many things with I think people have finally come
to terms with Tua in Miami.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
You know, for.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Years people pushed back when we offered, when we suggested
that Tua winning in January in the AFC was fools
gold little push on the two of train this way.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Wait, col Hurt. You know, I thought you were onto
something with the Sam Darnold to the Colts. I like that.
I was just looking at it.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Have fifty million caps.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
I kind of liked that move.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Fifty million capspan.
Speaker 6 (11:10):
You follow it up with two of the problem. You
think two of the problem in Miami. No, I got
like a million problems.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
I will just say, and I'm watching Minnesota last night
and I'm watching this weekend. Colts have fifty million cap space.
They got the roster. Yeah, Denver was getting hammered at home,
and Denver's a playoff team. They were getting unrest hammered
at home with a Hall of Fame coach. One team
just needs a quarterback. Because I looked at the six
(11:39):
teams that'll go after Donald today, it's five disasters and one.
I think they could turn in Minnesota very quickly. Okay,
we got a lot of stuff going on, you know,
Eric b Enemy and Nick Wright Today heard Hierarchy top
of the hour. Hey, it's getting close. I went shopping yesterday.
I got my daughter's stuff all taking care of it
in this cold weather.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Oh my god, it's like an arctic blast down here
in La.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
We left the house it was sixty okay.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
This morning it was like forty.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
It was fifty two. Okay, I had gloves in a
winter hack.
Speaker 7 (12:09):

Speaker 1 (13:15):
I saw something that I really liked. The forty nine
Ers have suspended linebacker devonre Campbell for refusing to play
in a game he walked out. He's done for the season. Baltimore. Meanwhile,
the Ravens have excused wide receiver Deontay Johnson from team
activities for a week. He refused to play at one
point in a game against Philadelphia. The reason I love
(13:38):
what San Francisco organizations and Baltimore are doing because it's
the opposite of the NBA players trample everything else. They're
coddled and pampered, making sure the stars are comfortable. The
NFL is a true brotherhood. Rule number one, you play
banged up, nobody's ever entirely healthy, and you never, ever,
(14:02):
under any circumstances, quit on a teammate. NBA Joel Embiid
announced earlier this year, I will no longer be playing
back to back. Oh and it was accepted and nobody
pushed back because it's the NBA. In the NFL, bye
(14:23):
bye off the team. Ab was a great player and
he was a lot of work, but people kept Ab
around the minute he bailed on his team. He's never
put on a pro uniform. San Francisco and Baltimore players.
The coaches don't have to be hard. The players hold
(14:43):
each other accountable because all football players care about all
football games until the final play. There is a truth
and a brotherhood in football that is really cool. It's
just sort of like people in America that have to
work hurt or sick in rain and sleet and snow.
(15:05):
Maybe it's that that creates that brotherhood that you just
play hurt. But the Niners and the Ravens are not
interested in players who are healthy and available and refuse
to play, It's not going to happen in this league.
We've already got one NBA. We don't need another. And
there's lots of things about the NBA. I like, I
(15:26):
think the athletes are incredible, But in the NFL, personal
reasons is not an injury designation. You're sad, go get
a therapist. It's not the league's problem. You're going to
play in practice every day physically capable. If you can't
and you're banged up, there are excellent doctors. There's less
(15:50):
hitting in the sport before and after games than ever before.
The league creates millionaires every day, but they do ask
that if you capable of playing, that you play. And
there's a hierarchy to the NFL. You've got your general
manager builds the team, your coaches coach the team, and
(16:11):
your players play hard and if they're capable of playing,
they play. It's not asking that much as a pro
athlete to play if you can. J Mack with a news.
Speaker 9 (16:26):
Turn on the news, this is the herd line news.
Speaker 6 (16:31):
How about Josh Allen Colin, best quarterback in the NFL
this season, There's no doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
He has locked up the MVP Award.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
Another spectacular performance against the Lions. Three hundred and sixty
two yards, two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and here's
tight end Dawson Knox talking about his incredible run.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
I think it's old.
Speaker 9 (16:52):
It's hard to describe what he does on a assistant basis.
Every single's okay with I've talked about it before, but
sometimes you just turn into a fan.
Speaker 7 (16:59):
I mean, through a chest fast touchdown.
Speaker 9 (17:02):
Adult I fall back, but he's flipping the ball to guys,
making plays with his feet. I's yelling in my head
this slide. But it's a lot of guys over. It's
so much fun to flavor that dude. It's really a privilege,
and I hope I get to play with them as
long as I past.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Again heard hierarchy paying a lot of respect. But I
would still say to this about Buffalo, we are so enamored,
and rightly so on Josh Allen. Their defense right now.
Lost in that Lion's win was Detroit marked up and
down the field too. I don't know if you can
win a Super Bowl with this defense. Like it's one
(17:39):
thing like Baltimore can be susceptible to the deep ball,
but Matt Stafford was never sacked against Buffalo and Detroit
in this loss would have won ninety nine out of
one hundred games by scoring as much as they did
and moving the ball as effortlessly as they did.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
The good news is the Bills won't be playing indoors
in the postseason in the AFC, right, They'll either be
at home or going to perhaps Kansas City, which doesn't
have nearly the offense that the Lions or the Rams do.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
So, I mean, I don't expect.
Speaker 6 (18:12):
Kansas City to do this to Allen and the Bills
defense in the postseason.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
To you, I don't think they're capable of it.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
I just think when I look at Detroit and Buffalo,
it was wildly entertaining. Yeah, but my takeaway was that
that doesn't play in February. At some point you have
to make stops.
Speaker 6 (18:31):
Probably if you're doing a quarterback pyramid, Collin is Josh
Allen on his own tier above everyone else based on
this season, forget about historical, just this season.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Yes, I think he's different than everybody. Yes, I know
it's Josh Allen.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
Then the next tier is like Lamar Burrow. I guess
the homes.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Yeah, Holmes continues to be the best late game, fourth
down goal line quarterback, arguably in league history. So we
can't just have recency bias. He doesn't have good tackles
in Kansas City. They're still making it up as they
go at wide receiver. So I mean he's This is,
by the way, the best supporting cast Josh has ever had.
(19:12):
I could argue this is the weakest supporting cast Mahomes
has ever had. I mean, I'll argue because Travis Kelsey's
now way out of his prime. They can't get tackle right.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
Well, they got Hollywood Brown coming back this week. Guys,
get excited.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Carson Wentz he's something, He's something.
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Maybe I don't think he's much, but Josh Allen just unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
Season. Bill's are Oh my gosh, is that right?
Speaker 6 (19:34):
Fourteen point favorites against the Patriots at home on Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
That's gonna be a fun one. Next up, we.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
Gotta go back to the Eagles. This heated sideline confrontation.
So the Jalen Carter situation. He got a penalty for
slapping a Steelers player on the head.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
And you can see Jalen Carter. They're ninety eight laughing
on the screen.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
Nick Sirianni wants to go talk to him, and the
defensive line coach hurt is like, no, Nick, you're not
talking to him like he's like a bodyguard protecting the player.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
This was bizarre. I think this is troubling. Eagles fans
are like, oh, it's no big deal, nothing anyway.
Speaker 6 (20:08):
Here's Nick Sirianni talking about it.
Speaker 10 (20:11):
As Jalen was coming off the field. I was kind
of getting after him there, and uh, you know, I
think that there was part of me that wanted to
go back. And then I went back, and what Clint
was saying is like, coach, I got it.
Speaker 11 (20:24):
I got it.
Speaker 10 (20:26):
I've already handled it. And the knowing, you know, And
so I had said something to him, Clint had said
something to him, and and it wasn't you know, knowing
Clint and how he's coached him for the past you know,
half a year that he's been here, I knew he
had it, and so then you know, it kind of
went away.
Speaker 5 (20:45):
Do the players and other coaches there respect Sirianni.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
It's interesting would you do that to Belichick or Andy Reid?
Would you do that? Was the cole Sana him would
you do it to McVeigh. I mean, I think it.
I honestly, when I see this stuff, you would not
do that to a head coach because the great head
coaches you fear. You're not doing that.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
Sean Pace, take a teacher, you fear the teacher.
Speaker 5 (21:05):
The sub comes in, it's goof off time. They say,
no sub.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
This is Nick Sirianni, the head coach of a pretty
damn good Eagles team. And the worst part is Carter's
like laughing, like I don't want to talk to this guy.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
Look at him, look at his face. He's like, eh,
whatever that. I just find that so disrespectful.
Speaker 6 (21:21):
And I know Eagles fans can poo poo this as
much ado about nothing.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
That's a head coach, I know, just not the way.
It's not the way it should. I mean again, I
think coaches sometimes have to back off like I sometimes.
You know, you see some of these college coaches throwing
headsets and it's like chill out. Yeah, But I think
and just people that are willing to do that to
a head coach, confront him, stand in his way. What
(21:46):
does it tell.
Speaker 6 (21:46):
You not great Eagles commanders?
Speaker 5 (21:49):
This week? This is interesting.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
I saw that line would you make of it?
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Well, I would tell you I already bet the Commanders,
but I don't know what's up with aj Brown. Like
if he doesn't play, it's automatic fave the Eagles, Like
the Ole offense is just so much worse without him.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
Final story coln Oh boy, here we go.
Speaker 6 (22:06):
Mike McCarthy has had a lot to deal with this
season in Dallas Dack injury. However, Dallas has turned it around,
winning three of four, feeding a bunch of bad teams.
In his weekly radio appearance with local Dallas Radio, Jerry
Jones talked about McCarthy and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer potentially
(22:26):
staying saying, I think you're beginning to see the best
of Mike Zimmer, but maybe the best is still ahead
of us. McCarthy has shown that his team can handle adversity.
I give them both high grades this year.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
We said this three weeks ago. Oh my gosh, Mike
McCarthy won a Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
When well, TikTok exists back then? Is that it's been
a million year.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
I don't even know if, like the iPhone exists, advocating
about the iPhone, but like that was forever ago.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
I don't want to hear that, what have you done
for me lately?
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Well? Okay, yeah, but I don't think any.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
You're, by the way, sixty eight years old college just
you'll be sixty nine in general.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Well, there's nothing wrong with you, nothing wrong.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
I'm not an ageist, just putting that out there, all right.
Do you see anything worth bringing these guys back?
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Well, I don't think Mike McCarthy's a bad coach. I
think offensively, I've said this before, they need to get
a running back, another weapon, probably an interior offensive lineman.
They need to move Micah and then draft another edge rusher.
It's a great edge rusher year. If the Cowboys could
get two first round picks, get a running back, replace
Micah on the edge, and then go get dak weapons.
(23:32):
I don't think they're miles away, but I don't think
they have the courage to do what's available. Like I
think Mike Vrabel's a better coach than Mike McCarthy, I
don't think they'd do it. I think they should trade
Micah and get two first round picks. I don't think
they do it. I think there's a path to success
for almost everybody in the league, not name the Chicago Bears.
I don't think Jerry's got the guts or the want
(23:54):
to do it.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
That list you just rattled off of what they need
to do.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
That's about as.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
Long as my eleven year old's Christmas list. Okay, all
the stuff Dallas has to do to get back to relevant.
I don't even think they're a five hundred team next year.
Oh well, I mean again, let's remember dak is making
all of the money co Yeah, so you're.
Speaker 5 (24:09):
Kind of hamstrung with would you give?
Speaker 6 (24:11):
By the way, it's we're what eight days after Christmas
and Jerry Jones is doing radio interviews.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
What come on, Vinyard Odor J.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Mack with a news Well.
Speaker 7 (24:22):
That's the news, and thanks for stopping by the herd
Line News.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
So listen.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
I root for young quarterbacks, believe it or not, because,
as we witnessed this weekend, when the quarterback play is good,
football is good, nobody wants to watch Will Levis and
the Titans like it's not fun. That's not what I
want to watch. And so there's a headline today in Miami.
One of the headlines is Tuo approves he isn't the
Dolphins franchise quarterback and the loss of the Texans. So
(24:49):
when I'm tough on a Tim Tebow, I was tough
on him, or tough on a Brock pretty or I'm
I'm tough on Tua, it's not because I'm a bully.
Anytime you have to qualify things for a quarterback, you
can't pay him big money. You can't have ifs. Yeah,
(25:09):
Josh Allen's great period, Matt Stafford's great period with Tua.
If it's over seventy degrees, if he's healthy, if he
has the fastest receiving tandem in the league, if he
has an offensive coach, he's an IF quarterback. Same with
(25:31):
Brock Purty. If Trent Williams is there, if McCaffrey's healthy,
if he's got a Hall of Fame roster, if it's
not raining, that's an IF quarterback. So Brian Flores, by
the way, was a meanie.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Right.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
Everybody said Brian Flores he was too rough on him.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
But was he right?
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Mike McDaniels the media loves him, maybe because he's about
the size of a sports rider. He's nice. Mike McDaniel
is there, he's supportive, he's nice. They can't beat good teams.
Mike McDaniel can't beat good teams and Tua can't play
in the cold, and so even though Brian Flores was
(26:12):
rough around the edges, we got to stop pretending this
to a thing is anything more than it is. He
is an if quarterback, if it's warm, if they're at home,
if he gets protection, if he's healthy, if he's got
McDaniel's playbook. But I watched them against the Texans, it's
all dink and dunk. You're starting to see the best
quarterbacks as the weather gets a little cold, little frothy.
(26:34):
The best quarterbacks are separating now. So I mean again,
Matt Stafford, he's great. You're not doing a bunch of ifs.
I mean, yeah, he is older, so you can't have
four your starting offensive lineman out. You can't have cluster injuries.
But when you're considering signing brock Purty to big money,
(26:54):
ask yourself, is he great if if the weather's ideal,
if Christian mccaffreiths is healthy, if Kyle Shanahan's his coach.
I've said this about Dak He is great if he
has the best offensive line in the league, and if
(27:15):
he has a top two or three running back. Zeke
that's the only time that we've gone wow. Otherwise, I
watched Dallas Cowboys. Now, Dak's obviously better than Cooper Rush.
But Jay Mack, you tell me I watched the Cowboys play,
Now how much better are they? I mean, Cooper Rush
is winning games. Cooper Rush beats Carolina, DAK would beat Carolina.
So it's just ask yourself, if you want to pay
(27:37):
a quarterback sixty million dollars, is he an IF quarterback?
And I think two is. I thought he had a
rough game against the Texans. The Texans are not a
great team. They've regressed from last year, and here was
two after.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
I gotta protect the ball.
Speaker 11 (27:53):
I got to play better ball for our guys, especially
in a situation where the team's counting on me to
go and drive our offense down to potentially tie the
game up.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
And that's not what I did.
Speaker 11 (28:06):
And you know that's that's not how you win games
in this league.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
I just need to be better and in all aspects
with that.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
It's nothing against Brock, it's nothing against Dak, it's nothing
against Purdy, it's nothing against Tua. But I always ask myself,
is he an IF or is he just great? Great?
I'll pay a fifty five million up the more ifs
I get okay, now we're in the forties or now
we're in the thirties. I love Sam Darnald, but if
he got a defensive coach, he wouldn't be the same player.
(28:39):
Sam Donald's a very very high end if quarterback. If
he gets Shane Stike in and Indy, he'd win. If
he has Kevin O'Connell justin Jefferson, he'd win. But if
you gave him the Jets mess or Carolina's mess, he
would struggle. Because I've seen it.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd Weekdays
and noone Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 6 (28:59):
Fox College Friday, it takes over primetime as Saint John's
Rip Betino leads the Red Storm against Providence in a
big East battle.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
It all tips off Friday at eight Eastern on five.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
Well, when the NFL decided to expand to seventeen games
in eighteen weeks, and they're going to expand to eighteen
games and nineteen weeks in fact twenty, they'll probably add
another buy. So the league now is becoming about attrition
more than ever. So I grew up it was fourteen
games forever, and then it was sixteen games, and now
(29:33):
at seventeen games. And so this league now is about pacing,
it's about attrition, it's about many teams get good after
a mid to late season by So if you go
to the last three seasons, those are the three years
when the NFL has had seventeen games, and the winners
(29:54):
of the Super Bowl are Kansas City, Kansas City and
the Rams, and they all got really good late and
they struggled at some point early or in the middle
of the season. So again, Detroit one September, in October,
they are falling apart. I think they're the third best
team in their division. This morning, I think Green Bays
(30:17):
better this morning, healthier and better. I think Minnesota right
now this second is better slightly. Detroit is beat up.
The defense is a mess. They can only win by shootout. Now,
Dan Campbell, I think, is getting a little edgier and
riskier because he knows he can't make stops. That onside
(30:39):
kick call, that's just desperation. You're not doing that if
you trust your defense. And it's like a major in golf,
you don't win majors on Thursday and Friday you win
them on the weekends, often on Sunday, September and October
are not winning this league. If you go to last year,
who got hot late? Packers, Lions, Rams, Chiefs. So it
is about timing as we've expanded this season. It's not
(31:02):
like this in college football. In the NFL, the margins
are tight, and Detroit early looked like Alabama was saving.
They were blowing teams out. Remember who did this last year?
Who got hot last year early to mid It was Baltimore,
Kansas City got hot late. Okay, this year Detroit hot.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Hurley.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Go look at their injury list. It's insane, and I
think it's changing the perception of the staff that they
know they have to take more risks offensively, defensively, special teams.
So this is a December and January league, and I
don't think Detroit right now. I think they got multiple issues.
(31:42):
And Dan Campbell's answer is we got to be tougher.
He was on local radio.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
You went eleven in a row, you know, and you
lose and then a sky falls, you get you Steeden
full A and I'm talking to all of us and
everything's good, life's good, you know, And but you forgot
what it was like when he had nothing in the
ate your molded bread. Sometimes you got to get punched
in the mouth and remember what it used to be
like to really appreciate where you are. And won't do that,
(32:08):
I promise you. If it's the other way. Defensively, we
give up seven hundred yards and we win by one point,
you're going to see a smile from my ear to ear.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Okay, I appreciate the Alpha, but the truth is they
got backups planned everywhere. And if you face Josh Allen
or Green Bays offense, or now Minnesota's offense or the
Rams offense, and you're using backups, their backups for a reason.
I mean, I love Dan Campbell, but the answer is no,
oh is try harder, be tougher. They're running out of players.
(32:39):
There's a reason there's guys that are backups are on
the scout team. They're just not as good. And so
now I saved it to the end of the hour.
J maac I said, eleven people in America outside of
Atlanta watched the Raiders and the Falcons. It was not good.
We're all asking the same question, though you're asking this
this morning, why are they still playing Kirk Cousins. So
(32:59):
Atlanta one, but could have lost on the final play.
And it shouldn't have been that close because the Raiders
right now they're in you know, it's the worst team
in the league. So here's the reason. Because Atlanta knows
that if they play Michael Pennix kirk Cousins, they can
never go back to him. And they paid like one
hundred and eighty million. The staff and the front office
(33:22):
convinced Arthur Blank to pay one hundred and eighty million.
And now Arthur Blank saying, all right, we're like, we're
like thirteen games into this thing. Now, I told you
my prediction. I was very pro kirk Cousins. I said,
I think he'll last until Thanksgiving year two. Then it's Pennix.
He ended up lasting about ten to eleven games, so
(33:44):
he lasted the half, not the year and a half.
That was my take. Is I mean Aaron Rodgers, for
the record, last month, has played his best football. He's
older than Kirk Cousins, same injury, so Aaron's actually played
very well. I think that's what I thought. I would say, slow, slow, slow,
so he'll be fine second year. He's just it doesn't
work but here this happens all the time. So they
(34:06):
talked Arthur Blank into writing that check because Arthur Blank's like,
are we going to draft a quarterback? Why pay for
a court? I mean they had this thing they were
going to draft a quarterback, and so okay, we'll do it. Well,
so now you have got to exhaust every last start.
Last night, kirk Cousins had eleven completions. Now, they won
(34:26):
the game, but I think if you look at Atlanta's schedule,
they're only a game back at Tampa and they have
the tiebreaker because they beat the Bucks twice. So I
think if Atlanta would have lost, they would have gone
to Penix. But because they won and they're only a
game back, and if you look at Atlanta's remaining schedule,
it looks like Giants Carolina are wins. Washington's a tough one,
(34:49):
whereas Tampa's got to go to Dallas. And then you
know New Orleans historically, you know New Orleans is New Orleans.
They can be tough. I think Atlanta is going to
make a change. But I think the reason we're all
asking why kirk Cousins are not Panix is because they
asked the owner to write a huge check and they
(35:09):
wanted to just make sure there is nothing left in
the tank. And Raheem Morris had been very defiant defending
Kirk Cousins, but after last night's performance, he was not, Yeah,
here's Raheem.
Speaker 12 (35:25):
He's got to play better. And you know, obviously you
got to go back, you got to be to look
at everything. But you know, he wants to play better.
He's got to play better. We got to find a
way to get him to play better. And obviously we'll
get to work tomorrow. And that's a part of our process, right.
You go, you look at the tape, you review with
the people that needs to be reviewed with. You know,
we get all the cording enders the room. We'll talk
with everybody, and we got to play better at the
quarterback position.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
So last five games, Kirk Cousins has one touchdown and
five picks. It's done. It just it's done. And that
that's okay. His passer ratings like below sixty five. But
Atlanta's not a super Bowl team. They're not and they
knew it. They're not a super Bowl team. And so
you know, again this is about the big picture. But
(36:06):
don't kid yourself in this league, these billionaire owners do
not like to write one hundred eighty million dollar checks.
I mean, when Sean McVay was in less need. We're
pleading with Stan Cronky, the first or second richest owner
in the league, to go get Matt Stafford, and they said,
we'll be paying Stafford and Jared Goff. It seems obvious
(36:28):
like Stafford's great, Goff's very good, stan Cronky's rich. But
stan Cronky has to be convinced. So I'm gonna be
paying Goff's Detroit salary and he better be good. So
Stafford wins a super Bowl, You're good. Because Goff got
to a Super Bowl. Stafford got there and won, was great.
Then no look past the Cooper Cup. So all this
stuff comes down to Atlanta's like, Okay, we talked this guy,
(36:50):
Arthur Blanket to writing this gigantic check. We gotta make sure,
we gotta make sure. And I'm surprised. I am. I'm
actually surprised Aaron Rodgers has been as good as he's
been the last two to three weeks, and Kirk Cousins
has been as bad as he's been the last month.
A little surprised by it, not shocked, but a little surprised.
All right, Jay mac, Eric b Enemy and Nick Wright
(37:10):
stop by today. I want to go back to the
Chicago Bears. We talked about this at the top of
the show. Is it's funny because I think there are
three franchises in the league that are broken Bears, Jets, Giants. Now,
I think of those teams, the Jets have the best players.
The Jets now have a left tackle, they have two receivers,
are running back. I like their defensive front, Aaron now
(37:34):
playing better, not great. Corners are excellent. So I was
asking this morning. I texted a friend in the NFL.
I said, if I'm Mike Rabel, because he's the best candidate.
The Jets have the best collection of players. Many you're
not even paying yet, Bryce Holland, Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner.
(37:54):
You're still years away from paying them. The Giant have
the greatest history, So the Jets have the best players.
The Giants have the best blue blood history. The Bears
have the most talented quarterback. So I was asking an
executive in the league, you're Mike Frable, and I think
he's the number one candidate if the Giants let go
(38:16):
a Brian dable, would you lean into the Giants' history
and their revenue flow, the Jets roster or the Bears quarterback?
Speaker 6 (38:26):
Okay, can I hate to ask answer a question with
a question, but what is Aaron Rodgers doing?
Speaker 5 (38:32):
Is he returning to the Jets or not?
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Yeah, he'll return for another year.
Speaker 5 (38:35):
And we're cutting in New York for the Giants. We're
cutting the quarterback Daniel Jones, so he's gone.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Okay, yeah, so the Giants have to find a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
I can't believe I got admit this.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
The Giants have to find a quarterback. The Jets have
one for a year, maybe two, and the Bears have one,
but they have more dysfunction than the Jets or the Giants.
They don't have the Giants history and they don't have
the Jets roster. So ask yourself as a list viewer,
you are you are the coach. Chicago has a star quarterback,
(39:06):
but they're the biggest mess. The Jets have Aaron playing
well now, but it's Aaron. And the roster, however, is
very good. It's a it's a good roster.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (39:17):
But Rogers Trump's all that because you got to deal
with that guy.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
He's a headache and nonsense, and then.
Speaker 6 (39:22):
Rob you know, is he gonna leave in a year
and you're starting over?
Speaker 1 (39:24):
Robert Sala had to Mike Vrabel will run the franchise, Yeah,
we'll lose Rogers.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Is gonna do?
Speaker 6 (39:31):
Is Joe Rogan podcast and go on the Former Punters
Show say stuff.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
I don't want any part of that.
Speaker 10 (39:36):
For me.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
It would be between Chicago and New York.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
Shouldn't which New York?
Speaker 5 (39:41):
The Giants? Not that I don't want to go? Why
would you want to go to the Jets?
Speaker 4 (39:44):
They don't like?
Speaker 5 (39:45):
Who's the GM? What's going on with Rogers? Those are
unanswered questions.
Speaker 6 (39:49):
All I know is Chicago. I got a lot of dudes,
I got a great lineup. Owner seems to be staying
out of it. The Giants owner, Mara kind of Look.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
I've been got involved in the room.
Speaker 5 (39:58):
You saw the video on a hard.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
I have been told Mara wants to keep Daboll. The
concern now is the locker room is quit. Now. I'm
not saying it has, but you watch that game, there's.
Speaker 6 (40:11):
A report that the GM and the coach are not
exactly a packaged deal.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
When you see that stuff, it's coming from somebody.
Speaker 6 (40:17):
I'm sure Dable, just like the Atlanta Falcons, is in
self preservation mode.
Speaker 5 (40:21):
Hey, you guys want to dup the GM Fine, fine, fine,
I'm good here.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Vrabel and Belichick, I'm told both believe the Giants should
retain Dable. Belichick thinks that I've been told in Vrabel.
They both think Dable's not the problem.
Speaker 6 (40:37):
So has this I would I would lean slightly Giants
because you get one of the top two picks. But
I'm not taking that without seeing what happens to the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (40:45):
In the postseason. What's going on in Atlanta? Is that
job gonna come open? Has Rohe Morris screwed this up enough?
Speaker 1 (40:50):
Ask yourself this. Oh, I got a good idea on
the Giants. Move down, don't take a quarterback next
