Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Here we go at Tower two. We're stacked today. Dan Lanning,
Oregon Dot Coach in one hour, Greg Cosell in a
couple of minutes. NFL Films Live in Los Angeles. It's
The Herd. Jmack. This is interesting. So Mark Davis has
been the owner of the Raiders, of course, inheriting the
franchise from his father who passed away. Al Davis the pioneer,

(00:47):
the visionary at least for most of his career, and
so Mark Davis has paying a lot of different coaches.
He said yesterday he's very disappointed with the Raiders season.
The only surprise would have been if they want because
they have a handful of great players like Max Crosby,
have brought Bowers, but they so he basically the coach

(01:09):
and the GM my friend Tom Telesco. It's a year
to year job. I just think it's the best coach
division in football. Harbaugh, Peyton, Red are all going to
be Hall of Fame coaches, and Antonio Pierce is a
first time coach. He's just not that yet. Also, they
had Gardner Minshew. So here's right now. The two worst

(01:29):
teams in the league are the two and eleven Raiders
the two and eleven Giants. If you look at their schedule,
the Raiders because they play so hard, they're one and
two right now in the current draft order. But if
you look at the Raiders' schedule, they get the Falcons, Chargers,
Jaguars at home. I think they win one of those games.
I think they could beat the Saints in New Orleans.

(01:50):
But I think the Raiders will win a game. If
you look at their schedule, the Giants will not. They'll
get boat raced by the Ravens, beat in Atlanta, beat
by the Colts, and even if the Eagles rest starters,
they'll get hammered by Philadelphia. It's not close. So that
means the Giants will have the worst record, get the
number one pick, and they will take the more polished
Chaduur Sanders with the number one pick, my guess is

(02:12):
the Raiders will take cam Ward number two, although my
feeling is Jalen Milrow in that building has some support. Now.
Sam Darnold is also available, probably for about thirty five million.
Russell Wilson could be available. I'm not sure the Steelers
are going all in on him. They may, I'm not
sure of it, and they're not even going to talk

(02:33):
about that until the season's over. So if you look
at the future of the Raiders, when you hear that
story today about Mark Davis, I don't. I mean Antonio
Peers to me, is overwhelmed compared to the three coaches
in his division. But they got to get the quarterback right,
and I think if you get the second best quarterback
in this draft, I think cam Ward's a very interesting player.

(02:54):
He's got a big arm, and he's dynamic. Quinn Ewers
is not dynamic. Shaduur Sanders does a have his escapability
or his arm, So you may end up with the
best quarterback. I don't think either of these quarterbacks, Shader
Sanders or cam Ward are A listers. I think they're
more B to B plus prospects. But we've seen in
recent times the number two quarterback can be better than
the number one quarterback, and so I think cam Ward

(03:16):
in Vegas feels like eventually in the not too distant
future of the play there. But Mark Davis again saying
he's very disappointed. What do you expect with that forty
five years NFL films? Nobody's more objective. Greg Josel joins
us the value of the running back. Nine months ago,
the media lamenting running backs, lamenting their future, their economic future,

(03:42):
And here we watch Detroit and Green Bay and Baltimore
and Washington, these power running teams are now front and center.
Do you think there's a reason for it schematically?

Speaker 3 (03:55):
I do.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
I think there's a number of reasons, and maybe we
don't know the exact why all these teams and Philly
obviously is probably the number one example they leave the
league in rushing. But what you're seeing more of in
the league are a couple of things in no particular order.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
Colin.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
You're seeing a lot more twelve personnel offenses are playing
with more multiple tight ends, two sometimes three tight ends.
You're seeing issues with offensive lines in pass protection. That's
been a major issue throughout the league for a lot
of teams. So if you have issues in pass protection,
you try to run the football and alleviate that problem.

(04:31):
I would say there's been far more two high safety
structure coverages in the league. That's been a trend over
the last couple of years where there's more two high
safeties as opposed to a safety sitting in the box.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
So the numbers tend to favor the run game.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
And I would say another thing is more and more
teams are playing what we call big nickel, playing with
three safeties as sort of a base defense as opposed
to a third linebacker. So you're seeing smaller players on
the field. So the run game has become more and
more prevalent. But overall, the pass protection thing really stands

(05:06):
out to me because I remember years ago I had
a conversation with John Gruden and one of the first
things he said to me was, you don't have a
pass game if you can't protect, And protection has been
a big issue in the league.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, we're getting more athletic defensive end and pass rushers
and less guys on the ath that can block them. Okay,
so the Eagles have clearly since the bye, became more
of a run first team, fewer attempts for Jalen Hurts.
It may not make aj Brown happy, but it makes
him a better team. So the game of the week
arguably is Steelers and Eagles. So the Steelers, they see

(05:38):
a lot of Lamar Jackson, so Jalen Hurts movement is
not going to intimidate them or flummox them. I think
Pittsburgh sort of matches up, even though I do believe
Philadelphia's roster is arguably the best in the league. What
are you expecting with the Eagles Steelers matchup?

Speaker 4 (05:56):
You know, it's funny you say that the Steelers overall
have played the run very well. They have really good
players up front, and the numbers their run defense statistics
are very good. But believe it or not, they don't
play their run as well from their nickel defense as
they do from their base defense. So I'm very curious
to see if the Eagles, in this game, as they
did a week ago, play a lot out of eleven

(06:19):
personnel with three wide receivers. Keeping in mind also that
Dallas Goddard is out, so they may want to be
in eleven personnel anyway, But to me, that's a critical
part of this matchup, and there's one player on the
Steeler defense.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
Who I think is really really important.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
It's to Sean Elliott. He is a really smart, savvy player.
Not a well known player, he's been around the league,
but he is really aware, really smart, understands offensive line play,
understands formations.

Speaker 5 (06:49):
He's a critical piece of that Steelers defense in.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
The run game. So last week I watched the Rams
dissect the Bills defense. It looked like a SI on
seven drill. But there was also something about the Bills
offense that was a bit concerning. Earlier this year, I said,
I love Josh Allen to be Superman, but I like

(07:13):
him to go into the phone booth and do it
once or twice a game. I don't want him to
show up after the anthem in the Cape, and I thought,
they they're losing a little bit of the balance. They're
becoming a little more Hey Josh, save us. This is
the Bills. I don't love is the film saying that?

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Well.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
I think last week's game was probably a little bit
of anathema to what they want to be. I think
that they felt early on in that game that the
opposing offense, the Rams offense was was really moving the
ball well, and the game was snowballing early, and they
did try to run and couldn't. And I think they
felt that they had to keep pace in a high
scoring contest, and in their mind, the way to keep

(07:57):
pace is to put the ball in Josh Allen's hands,
argue arguably the most dynamic individual player in the league. So,
you know, I think that particular game they felt that's
how they have to play. I don't think they're changing
their philosophy. They still play more with six offensive linemen,
more snaps with six offensive linemen, far and away than

(08:18):
any team in the league. We'll see how it turns
out this week because they're in Detroit and one of
the things that stood out with their defense a week
ago they couldn't really generate any pressure with a four
man pass rush, and their zone coverages were eaten up
by McVeigh. And keep in mind, you know this Colin
Ben Johnson does as good a job as any offensive

(08:39):
coordinator in the league versus zone with his spacing, his
route spacing, his understanding of how to put zone defenders
in conflict.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
So we'll see how this week plays out.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
So an interesting matchup. And I got to give j
mack and you credit because I asked both of you
before the season, what's a team that's better than people think?
And you said the Sea Seahawks and Jmax said the
Seahawks And you both said like their roster. Let's see
Mike McDonald. Well, the Ravens defense has cratered without Mike McDonald,

(09:10):
and the Seahawks defense, now that it's healthy with McDonald,
is outstanding. So Green Bay become a bit more of
a power run team against Seattle this weekend, I'm fascinated
to watch that. What do you expect.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Well, the Seahawks defense vanilla is not the right word,
but they're not a high percentage blitz defense. But they
have a really good defensive line rotation. And they made
changes at linebacker, oh three, four weeks ago when they
traded for Ernest Jones and they put the rookie Knight
in who replaced Terrel Dotson who they released, And they're
much much better at the linebacker position. And also, you know,

(09:49):
it's funny I mentioned Big Nickel a few minutes ago
talking about the run game. Since they got the safety
Jenkins back from injured reserve, they've gone to a lot
of Big Nickel playing three safeties and that has really
helped them, and Julian Love one of their safeties. He
is one of the best safeties in the league, and
he's not talked about enough. So they have really good

(10:10):
people and that d line rotation is really really impressive.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
All right, So I got you at Baker Mayfield credit. Now,
I've always liked Jason light the GM. I've always thought
they draft well and Baker. You know, he and Darnold
Donald's bigger, more athletic, and Baker can have rough quarters.
But when you look at Tampa, is it a Baker

(10:35):
story or a roster story? What has them in first place?

Speaker 5 (10:40):
You could argue, Again, I guess that's our theme for
the day.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
If I told you they were a top eight rushing
team in the NFL, were you aware of that? They've
rushed for over one hundred and fifty yards I think
in six or seven games this year, including last week.
They've become incredibly multiple with their run game. They play
two backs what we call the Pony package. They'll play
Irving and White, they'll play White and Tucker, They'll play
Irving and Tucker.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
They'll play with the Pony package quite a bit.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
And they're really multiple with how they attack in the
run game, and when you have Irving and White on
the field, they are both really good receivers as well.
So Baker's playing well, there's no question about it. But
I think they have multiple ways in which to attack defenses,
and their run game has become a big factor. And
by the way, they're really a really snapshot of what

(11:27):
I was talking about. They're o line much better run
blocking than they are in pass protection.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Okay, so I'm interested for this. The other day on
the internet, I saw somebody posted it. I apologize for
not remembering what it was, but they put Russell Wilson's
stats last year in Denver up against bow Knicks stats
this year in Denver, and they were kind of similar,
very similar. But yet I feel differently about bow Knicks

(11:53):
and Russell Wilson. Though the numbers are the same, so,
and the offensive personnel is mostly the same so and
the coach Peyton's the same bo Nicks, Russell Wilson. What's
Denver doing offensively? That feels different to me because I
feel they're more explosive.

Speaker 5 (12:12):
And they are.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
The numbers are the numbers, but it looks different because
it is different. One thing about Bone Nicks which I'm
not sure many of us expected.

Speaker 5 (12:23):
Colin is he is very.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Good throwing the ball in the middle of the field
between the numbers at the intermediate level, and I think
there were questions about whether he could do that at
the NFL level, but he's done a really, really good
job with that. So in terms of the timing and
structure of their offense, the rhythm of it, and the
pass game, it just is better than it was a
year ago. And so numbers are they're just a cumula.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
Thing over time. But the way you achieve those numbers
is more important.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
It's the process of achieving those numbers, and the process
in Denver, the way their offense looks and plays is
much more insistent with Boone Nicks than it was a
year ago with Russell Wilson.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Before we get to the Niners. To end this, I
want to talk about the Rams. I've said this, you
could make an argument take out maybe the Lions. Maybe
that if you said head coach, quarterback, two receivers, running back.
The Rams are in a very rarefied air. They Kyron Williams, Pooka,

(13:24):
Cooper McVeigh, Stafford. You and I both love Stafford. He
is so much fun to watch. So they play a
beat up Niners team tonight. Let's but my takeaway is,
are the Rams a year away with their offensive line
and another draft class, or when you watch them beat Buffalo,

(13:45):
do you believe like that's who they are they can
beat anybody?

Speaker 4 (13:50):
Well, I think they can beat anybody that whether they
do or not, I guess that remains to be seen.
But when Stafford can be protected, and of course the
Bills did not generate much pass rush, so you have
to be concerned when they play teams that can really
rush the quarterback because I think their old line is
still a bit of a work in progress. But in
terms of the schematics of their offense, I think it's

(14:12):
really really difficult to defend. I mean, it's play action
under center, it's motion, it's shifting, it's reduced splits. Receivers
get free access. They're really good attacking zone coverage with
their spacing. Defensively, they have a very young d line,
but those guys are dynamic and athletic and a few
of them could end up being special. And they made

(14:34):
a major change about a month or so ago with
what they do on defense with their personnel. So you know,
I think it's a team that could theoretically beat anybody,
but you've got to protect Stafford. When he's protected, there
may be no one who throws a prettier ball to
Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Okay, brock Purty is having to play without Christian McCaffrey
look pretty good against the Bears. Your thoughts about that?

Speaker 5 (14:57):
Yeah, I thought that last week. That was a clinic.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Kyle Shanahan, he knew exactly what he was going to
get from the Bears defense. They played a ton of
zone coverage. He attacked it beautifully, perty was able to
throw the ball to his primary quite a bit. They
got the screen game involved, which is basically a no
read throw, and it just looked on tape in particular.
It looked good on TV too, but in tape it
just looked like a clinic. And there was one play

(15:22):
early on in the game that really stood out to me,
and that's going to be our play of the week,
and we can get to that right now because it's
so symptomatic and emblematic of what they did. And this
was a thirty three yard completion to Kittle relatively early
in the game, and you'll see he catches it in,
there's room, there's space for him, and Kittle was very
involved last week in their offense, and I'm sure that

(15:44):
was by design. So as we look to break this down,
what you're going to see here is Kittle, who's on
the left side of the formation to start, He's going
to shift to the other side of the formation. And
so what that does is it makes it what we
call a three by one set with three receivers to
the wide side of the field.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
And a single receiver to the boundary.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Now, the coverage to the three receiver side is going
to be Cover two, okay, so they're going to attack
this Cover two Again, it looked like Kyle knew exactly
what he was going to get through much of this game.
He's going to run Connolly and pearsall on two vertical routes.
They're the outside receivers that it take attacks the Cover

(16:27):
two safety, and then Kittle's going to run an outcut
underneath those two verticals, and then you're going to have
the back garndo worked through the line into the flat
to the same side. So four receivers to the same
side what we call four strong, very difficult in zone
coverage to defend. So again, just as we walk through it,

(16:48):
you get the two verticals that forces that safety, the
half field safety, to have to retreat. Now you're going
to get the hook defender underneath. He's going to expand.

Speaker 5 (16:59):
He doesn't really need to, but he does for a
couple of reasons.

Speaker 4 (17:02):
One he has eyes on Girndo, who's going to get
into the flat. But the main reason he's going to
expand has to do with what Brock Purdy does here.
Purdy does a great job right here of pumping as
if he's going to throw to the outside void to Connolly,
and that gets that hook defender to really expand, and
he shouldn't because now what you get is you get

(17:25):
Kittle in that void.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
In the coverage. And this was beautifully set up. As
I said, four strong very very hard to defend in
zone coverage. You just don't have enough bodies.

Speaker 4 (17:36):
And this was very reflective and representative of what Kyle
Shanahan did against the Bears last week. As we see
Kittle here running his route, and when you get the
ball to Kittle and he has room to run, you
know what that's like, Colin.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
He's a very difficult guy to tackle.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
Forty five years NFL Films. Greg co Selezo was good
seeing him a man.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
Thanks, Gon, appreciate it as always.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
You bet. Dan Lanning, Oregon Ducks coach. About forty five
minutes away. Jordan Schultz stopped by earlier, so we are
moving on. A Thursday. Rams go to Santa Clara, San
Francisco's dinged up Bosa. Game time decision. Trent Williams, great
left tackle, Hall of Fame first ballot guy, he's out.
They're not the same team without Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams.

(18:23):
Hard game to wrap your brain around, because the Rams
played a flawless football game against Buffalo, a very emotional game,
a tough team in Buffalo. So I don't know what
we're getting tonight. I'm interested to watch it one more.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Heard The Herd streams twenty four hours a day, seven
days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd to
listen live or on demand whenever you like.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
We had Jordan Schultz on about fifty minutes ago, maybe
forty five minutes ago, and he was breaking the story
yesterday about Bill Belichick going to Carolina, and I don't
think it was the first thing he thought of, but
I according to an article I read this morning, Chicago
interested him and Jacksonville interested him. Those to me of

(19:11):
the two best jobs because of Caleb Williams and Trevor Lawrence,
those are the two best jobs my opinion. Chicago dysfunction upstairs,
Carolina just historically dysfunctional everywhere. And Jordan Schultz talked about
why Bill chose college over the NFL.

Speaker 6 (19:32):
As the market started to materialize or lack thereof, it
became clear to Bill that I need to take the
most secure position I can right now. Bring my staff,
whether it's Michael Lombardi, maybe it's Matt Patricia, Joe Judge.
Because NFL teams weren't going for that. They didn't want
to bring in Matt Patricia, they didn't want to bring
in Josh McDaniels. So all due respect to Bill, the

(19:54):
greatest coach of all time at seventy two, seventy three
years old, the market was simply not what he thought
of would be.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
And Atlanta was the only team to seriously consider him
last year. This is Bill Belichick showing up this morning,
very nicely dressed. It's a college campus. It's a new experience.
I mean let's be honest, it's gonna it's gonna be
a fun story. I think the coaching and the personnel
will not be the issue. It will be a fit

(20:20):
on a college campus. There's a lot of coaches in
that athletic department, as as a lot of maintenance and
a lot of needy second tier coaches, and they'll be
budgets that will be clipped because they're pouring money into
the football program, and there'll be animosity and there's so
much nonsense that an athletic director has to deal with.

(20:42):
But they're gonna start pulling money. They won't pull it
away from basketball, but the lacrosse budget may get slashed
and it'll create animosity in the building. Belichick doesn't care.
And let's be honest, football and men's basketball drive all
the money in college sports. You know, that's where the
money's raised. So I'm interested in that kind of weird

(21:02):
part of the business. But the coaching part. We showed
the schedule earlier, North Carolina schedule. I mean, this is
not the aec OR, this is not the SEC, this
is not the Big Ten. They got a tough home
game against Clemson and Syracuse on the road, But I
mean it is it is a that is a layup

(21:27):
as a college schedule.

Speaker 7 (21:29):
You could never underestimate a trip to Berserkle, That trip
to cal will be difficult. Cal Cal is feisty this year.
You know Berkeley, well, I know it, Yeah, berserk Le.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah, it's a scene there.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
I mean that has ten and two written all over it.

Speaker 7 (21:42):
If he hits the portal hard and a lot of
people are making the meme about Listen, have you seen
Bill Belichick's new girlfriend.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
He knows how to recruit college talent.

Speaker 1 (21:50):
He's not gonna have any problems in the portal. People
that they open with TCU, just like Dion Sanders opened
with TCU. I'm excited. I can't wait. Jmack with the news.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
No, no, this is the Herdline News.

Speaker 5 (22:08):
All right.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
We're hitting this game every day because it's the game
of the week.

Speaker 7 (22:11):
Eagles Steelers battle of two of the what five to
six best teams in the NFL. Saquon Barkley has had
a huge impact on the Eagles this season, and Mike
Tomin believes it was the move of the NFL offseason.

Speaker 8 (22:25):
Saquon Barkley has got to be the most significant acquisition
in the NFL in twenty twenty four. That's what the
tape looks like. He's been dominant, eye opening at times,
obviously highlight real caliber plays, long runs, touchdowns, et cetera.
It starts there for us. If you don't minimize him

(22:47):
in some way, you're not even going to position yourself
to have a chance to be successful.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
Yeah, I mean, listen, Philadelphia is just.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
Can I challenge the Saquon Barkley being the movie of
the off season.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
Well, it was an awesome.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Move, it was a great investment. It's paying off.

Speaker 7 (23:05):
Sam Donald is on a one year, ten million dollar deal.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Yeah, Saquon got way more than that.

Speaker 7 (23:11):
Yeah, Sam Donald bike is grading out as one of
the best ten quarterbacks in the.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
League this season.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Oh yeah, no, I think Donald was.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
Didn't he a better deal than take one?

Speaker 1 (23:19):
I think they're both great. But I think listen, even.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
We're ten and one last year without saqua to start, Yeah, no.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
He is. I think they're both great. I think the
Eagles would have been fine without Saquan. Yeah, the Vikings
would be a bit of a mess. They would not
be without Donald because JJ McCarthy's injury. So Sam's been
tremendous and you know, I like Sam.

Speaker 7 (23:41):
I know that's why I was give it a little
props because I've been a little harsh on Sam Send.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
There's no market for him.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
You would love Sam if you met him.

Speaker 7 (23:48):
He is like the ultimated Meet him at the super
Bowl in Arizona outside of a party.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
Such nice guy, great guy, great guy. Instantly was a
great Yeah. Family j Mack from the.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
Herd Cowhard's my guy. I was like, obviously, that's right.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Donald knows. Yeah, got any problems with you, I'll hear
about it.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
Who's problems with me?

Speaker 7 (24:04):
Nobody?

Speaker 5 (24:04):
Come on? Next?

Speaker 7 (24:06):
Up is the probably second best game of the weekend,
although this is a great weekend for NFL Action folks.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
Bill's lyons he's going to be a barn burner.

Speaker 7 (24:14):
Josh Allen is coming off that ridiculous six touchdown performance
against the Rams. He you know, he's a runaway MVP
at this point. I don't want to hear anybody else.
Dan Campbell is the favorite to win Coach of the Year,
and here's Dan Campbell praising Josh Allen's awesome season.

Speaker 9 (24:29):
He's got all these attributes, physical attributes, but then it's
it's what he's got inside of him, and he's the
ultimate competitor. Man. That's what separates him from a lot
of guys. Man he is, he's fearless. And it's one
of those guys you know, they play the way they
do for him because he's just he's he just won't
give it up. He's not going to give it up.
And he's gonna do whatever it takes to get the

(24:51):
next first down or get the touchdown. And when they
need him in crunch time, he's.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
Going to show up.

Speaker 9 (24:56):
And he just he won't give up, you know. And
and I think that's what makes him really what makes
Moui is his competitiveness.

Speaker 1 (25:05):
Well, I think his arm size and running ability make him.
But he is you know, we are ever think about
this in sports? How lucky we are You and I
overwhelmingly get a talk football. We don't have to talk
about Zion's weight or Ja Morant's family stuff. The NFL

(25:26):
all their star quarterbacks, I mean Kyler Is, you know,
but you talk to the top five or six or
seven guys, they're all unbelievably competitive, awesome guys in their prime. NFL.
Maybe it's just the football culture in America. I mean,
Aaron's old school and could be prickly, but even he's entertaining.

(25:46):
We are so lucky to have this group of quarterbacks.
I don't think there's ever been this many great quarterbacks
of this I never felt in my life there were
like seven, because I think Stafford and Alan Sunday may
have been the quarterback show piece of this season. And
I thought it was like you were watching first ballot
Hall of Fame guys both really lean into their art.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
Is this game gonna make the blazing five?

Speaker 1 (26:10):
I am strongly considering this game.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
Okay, because it's going to be in headlines. You want
a number? Can I give you just to wet your
beak just a little bit?

Speaker 7 (26:21):
So Josh Allen goes from indoors at SOFI to indoors
in Detroit.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
You want to know what is against the spread? Record?
Is indoors in his career?

Speaker 1 (26:28):
What nine to one?

Speaker 3 (26:31):
Josh Allen indoors? No elements outside?

Speaker 7 (26:33):
Also, I like, I like hold on, hold on Dalton
kid Kith back at practice, he's a go. Kean Coleman
back at practice, he's a go yep. I don't want
to say they were resting guys against the Rams for
this game, but they are going to have their entire arsenal.
I saw a report that Milano, the linebacker is finally
healthy again.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
It's like play or Buffalo. Buffalo is the side. It's
going to be one of the best games the season.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
I got cousin five is like a last team with
the ball wins or.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
I think it is. Yeah, it's gonna be a showcase, great.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
Weekend of football.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
Final story, Colin is not great news. Your guy Justin Herbert.
I know he's a bionic superhuman guy, but I mean, dude,
left ankle injured against the Chiefs. Missed practice yesterday. Questionable tag.
Herbert discussed the ankle injury.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
Here he goes.

Speaker 10 (27:26):
I would say that this one is probably not as
severe it's it's definitely, you know, painful enough to be
able to miss a practice. But I felt like I've
been able to move around a little bit better this
week than I did, you know after Caroline, where I
was put into a boot and had difficulty walking.

Speaker 7 (27:44):
I know we talk a lot about Tua and the concussions.
I'm just saying, you look at Justin Herbert's history. He's
been banged up a lot. No, I don't know if
that's the offensive line stinks.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
Well, he's funny. They finally have the offensive tackles right,
and the interior O line is hit and miss. You know,
it's it's they just can't quite get it right. But
thankfully they drafted Joe Alt and not a receiver, so
they have their tackles for the foreseeable future. Those are
really good at maybe the best tackle pairing. Detroit's got
a great tackle pairing. It's one of the better tackle

(28:13):
pairings in the league.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
You know, as the worst tackles in the division. As
the Chiefs.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Yeah, Garrett Folls for Denver's good and Colton Miller, the
left tackle for the Raiders is very good.

Speaker 3 (28:24):
Hey, the Chiefs are in trouble. What are you doing
with this Chargers bub scheme? Come out here to so Fi.

Speaker 1 (28:30):
Here's what I don't like. Baker could be goaded into mistakes.
He has bad quarters, and the Chargers goad you into mistakes.

Speaker 3 (28:39):
Chargers run defense very good.

Speaker 1 (28:42):
I think it's a low scoring game. I'd probably take
the points. But Baker, he's going to come out to
LA and he's going to be slinging it, and I
just worry that he makes the mistake because he's you know,
he in a couple of his wins. He has not
played well for four quarters.

Speaker 7 (28:58):
He's had a rough month. You know, I don't know
if he's dinged up or what have you. But this
Chargers team has proms getting separation. But look at that
Bucks injury.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
Report before you fire on this game.

Speaker 7 (29:07):
They got a lot of winfields out. He's great in
the back end. I just don't know if they can
take advantage.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
With against Kansas City. They found they found guy. I
don't know how I know that was just a.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
Great Disty got hurt. He's out. It looks like he's
a no go this weekly.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
Oh boy, I mean, it's just Jamack with the news.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by. The
Herd Line news.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Ducks coach Dan Lanning coming up in the last hour.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern a em Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
The Rams right now are a seven and sixteen, the
Niners hosting the Rams for a six and seventeam. So,
I you know, I've been saying this where they're both
out of the current playoff spot, but the Rams with
a win tonight could go a long way in securing
the momentum after a win over Buffalo in which they
played perfectly. So if San Francisco loses tonight, my takeaway

(30:09):
is the story tomorrow for the media will be uh.
It's the Niners obituary. I wrote it three weeks ago.
I think this team has three or four big problems.
It's an old, expensive, brittle roster. Both lines need rebuilding,
and I think brock Perty's gonna get overpaid. I think
he's good, I don't think he's special, and he's gonna
get paid like Dallas does with Dak as a special quarterback.

(30:30):
The Rams future winner lose tonight is very bright. They
have as arguably the best young coach in the league,
Matt Stafford. Maybe thirty six, but he can play with anybody.
They have tremendous young skill people and a superstar twenty
three year old wide receiver, and their defensive line is
stacked and young and economical. So I think if the

(30:52):
Rams winner lose, their futures bright. I don't think they're
a super Bowl winning team, but I do think they're
a team that could win this division and win a
playoff game. It's all about keeping Stafford upright. And McVeigh
he's had battles for years with Shanahan and this roster
and talked about tonight.

Speaker 11 (31:10):
They know us, we know them. There's some different things,
you know, on a positive, guys established some good momentum,
some things that we can certainly learn from and it's
you know, these are the opportunities that you love in
the NFL.

Speaker 1 (31:22):
Humility is only a week away.

Speaker 11 (31:23):
That they have excellent coaches, excellent personnel, really good schemes
and so no matter what's really happened in terms of
the trajectory of the injuries, they're going to be ready
to go and we're gonna do our best to get
our guys ready to roll and it's going to be
a great challenge and opportunity.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
Yeah, and here's what worries me. The Rams last year
and it was kind of a rebuild year, went to Baltimore,
and Baltimore clubbed the Dolphins, the Lions, the Niners, and
the Rams took them overtime. So that told me they
needed just one more draft class. And they hit on
their first two or three picks big time. A safety

(31:59):
defensive and you know, pass rushers and they hit for
the second year in a row. They hit on all
their top defensive picks, so the Rams are a real team.
I don't know if their offensive line stacks up in
pass protection like the Eagles does or the Lions does.
I just don't think it does. But when they lose,

(32:21):
they lose close. San Francisco has been blown out by
the Bills, Chiefs, and Packers. So I think the future,
Like I said this yesterday, the future for the New
York Giants, I think is brighter than the Jets. They're
both bad. The Niners in the Rams are both pretty good.
I think the future is better for the Rams.

Speaker 12 (32:37):
Now.

Speaker 1 (32:37):
Bill Belichick has been named the head coach. We had
video just about ten minutes ago at North Carolina as
he arrived with a smile on his face. And it's
interesting because he is gonna make it is a pro model,
make no doubt about it. He's on a college campus.
It is a pro model. And he has hired Mike Lombardi,

(32:58):
who I know a little bit, as his general manager.
And I mean, if you listen to this, they're not
being around the bush here. And this is the future
of college football. Hiring former gms in the NFL and
personnel guys to run the cap and run the recruiting.
And here's Lombardi on what he will create with Bill
in Chapel Hill.

Speaker 12 (33:20):
We're going to build a pro personnel department, and that
pro personnel department really will be the transfer portal. So
that will be what we build there to monitor all
the college teams, whether it's in the ACC, the Big
Ten to Southeast Conference, or in any conference right the
new PAC twelve, So you have to monitor all the
players just like you would in pro football. And then
obviously you'll have a director of college scouting, but that

(33:42):
guy will be the director of high school scouting and
monitor all the high schools.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
Yeah, it's a pro model, but you're dealing with high schools.
Cliff Kingsbury, who coached in college coach Patrick Mahomes and
it was the head coach in the NFL and now
is a terrific coordinator for the Washington Commanders, was asked
this morning about Belichick as a college head coach.

Speaker 6 (34:02):
What do you kind of think of the idea of
a guy at his status going to college in this
day and age.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
I will have to see him on the sideline. I
believe that's happening.

Speaker 11 (34:13):
I got to just sit around and observe last year,
and no, I don't see my man going to any home
visits or doing like the cocktail hour after the visits.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
I just don't. Maybe you'll set it up like an
NFL deal, but I have to see that believe it.

Speaker 5 (34:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
I mean everybody that knows Bill Edelman at Brady and
Gronk and anybody that knows Bill, you know, everybody's like,
this is gonna be odd.

Speaker 5 (34:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
This was this weekend. The guys former players under Bill
about Belichick.

Speaker 12 (34:46):
We heard this week that Bill Belichick is actually interviewing
for college jobs.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
Can you imagine him coaching college? No, absolutely not.

Speaker 6 (34:54):
I think there's a lot of things he can do,
and obviously he's tremendous and even showing his personality, but
getting out there on the recruiting trail and deal with
all these college kids out n.

Speaker 11 (35:03):
I l Could you imagine on a couch recruiting really
want to come here and we don't really want you anyway,
But I mean I guess you could come.

Speaker 1 (35:13):
We'll figure out her parents and use off a third party.

Speaker 5 (35:16):
You're gone, You're off the scene.

Speaker 1 (35:18):
Yeah, and that that is the cultural shift in the
sport is it's Lincoln Riley's struggling this with this and
Brian Kelly are struggling. And Lincoln Riley won eleven games
a year at Oklahoma, so you know us how to coach,
and Brian Kelly does. It's hard to hard coach kids
and to build a culture, you gotta do some hard coaching.
You're not walking into Carolina is not Clemson. It's not

(35:42):
you know, it's it's not. It's not Ohio State. That's
not what it is. It's not. I mean, go ask
Kurt Signetti at Indiana for ast couple of years there.
You gotta, you gotta. You can't walk on eggshells. Brian
Kelly at Notre Dame for several years. But it's it
is really hard now because you can poach people's players

(36:02):
and they can poach yours, and so it's a really daunting,
a very relentless cycle now that you're recruiting your own
players almost as much as you're recruiting other players, and
sometimes it's not almost you are, and so it's it's tough.
And I again I'm not saying Mac Brown got back

(36:24):
to Carolina before this thing became the Wild Wild West.
But in the last couple of years, Mac Brown looked
a bit old for the job, and Mac was a
legendary recruiter. So I think Bill's coaching and personnel moves,
there'll be no problem, and I think he could have
some success. But do you really see a five year deal.
Do you think he'll be in North Carolina in five years?

(36:45):
Would you be shocked if he took it for a
year he won games, ten games, and people were going
crazy how successful it's been. And then his son gets
the job and he bolts back to the NFL because
there's seven Oh. I don't think that's nuts. I do
not think it's crazy. I've seen these legendary coaches come
to networks and they're like, I can't wait to broadcast.

(37:08):
A year later, they're off coaching. I wouldn't be surprised
if he goes there is pretty successful, but he's like, guys,
you can have my son. This is not for me.
I don't like it, and he goes back to the NFL.
I do think he'll get another head coaching job in
the next two years. I really do. I really do.
Here was Nick Wright yesterday on the effects of Andy

(37:31):
Reid in Bill Belichick's choice of college football.

Speaker 13 (37:37):
Even if you go get that record, are you just
holding it for a year for Andy Reid? And I
know people like on Nick your chief's guy. Here are
the numbers. He's gonna end this season right around three hundred.
If he's at two ninety six right now, he'll be
forty seven away from Shula himself. That means three great

(38:01):
years or four mediocre years. So how important is that
all time coaching record if you actually only hold it
for twelve months before Andy Reid comes blows past.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
You, and it really is. Andy Reid is not far
from Bill Belichick. It's surprising. He's only six playoff wins
behind Bill Belichick six And if he coaches two and
a half more years, Mahomes is upright and healthy, he'll
surpass Bill and all time wins. So Andy Reid is
much closer to Bill Belichick in the all time w list.

(38:33):
It's Don Shula, it's Belichick, and it's Andy Reid right
behind him. And if Andy's health holds up, he will
become the winning US coach three more full years and
Andy's in, you know, as long as Mahomes is upright.
So it's I mean there it is Belichick, Reid, Tom
Landry Shula. I mean it's if Andy goes on two
more playoff runs with Mahomes, he's number one all time.

(38:59):
In't an amazing how close you would think Belichick is
miles ahead.

Speaker 7 (39:04):
I'm sorry just to you said he's number one meaning
most career playoff wins, not the best coach in NFL history?

Speaker 1 (39:10):
Right?

Speaker 5 (39:11):
Well?

Speaker 1 (39:11):
No, I mean Don Shula's got the most wins. Ever,
Belichick's right behind him, But Read's right behind Belichick.

Speaker 3 (39:17):
Belichick is the most super bowls, way more than Shula.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
Yeah, nobody's questioning that.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
Nobody's sniffing that.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
But Belichick failed a lot, and he's never failed.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
Somebody fails, then somebody who hasn't failed. List, there's no discussion.

Speaker 7 (39:29):
Nobody's passing Belichick for the greatest NFL coach ever, who's passing.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
Him Andy Reid in three years? Is that? That's crazy?

Speaker 3 (39:40):
That's out crazy.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
Belichick's waiting six super bowls at a row.

Speaker 3 (39:44):
What's going on here?

Speaker 1 (39:45):
If they won two more.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
I can't wait for the Steelers to take them down.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
Go Tomlin, baby, don't hold your breath
