Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Ah, welcome, man, it's our two after the abject meltdown.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
They don't like to use the word choke much, but
when you watch Boxton last night, even Game one, I
would not call a joke. I just you lost a lead.
It happens, teams lose. Road teams are doing very very
well in the NBA playoff. They didn't where it was. Now,
what is the theory why all these road teams are
doing well. We know that veteran teams like Golden State
over Houston tend to do well. Also, I think it's
(00:53):
pretty obvious that road teams are doing well this year
because they are really allowing physical play, and a road
team can come in and muddy up and ugly up
a game and the home team is like, you know,
let's face it. Most teams that start a series at
home have been better regular season teams. In the regular season,
(01:13):
the NBA doesn't call it as close. So the offensive leaning,
the pretty teams, the teams with depth of shooters do
very well in the regular season. The NBA is like, okay,
now it's arm wrestling. So the road teams come in,
there's a little shock to the system of the home
favorite and guys like Chris Fincher like, you're letting Golden
State with pulling guards here, and so what I think
(01:35):
is happening when the NBA allows the less talented team
and it may be close, to play a little uglier
and to grab a little more, it is a big
It's almost like the NFL saying you can the tush
push is not only legal, we encourage it, and it's
an advantage to the teams with the best so line
(01:55):
and the toughest guy.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
I don't disagree, but Colin, I don't know why you
don't want to use the word choke. When you end
the game giving up a twenty three to six run,
that is choke city clutch time. The Knicks have dominated
the series. Bridges and Anannoby are locking down Brown and Tatum.
I know Tatum's getting a lot of heat. Where's Jalen
Brown That finals MVP can't do anything. The Knixt defense
(02:17):
in the clutch time has been tremendous. Yeah, and they
have the best closer in basketball and Jayleen Brunson.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
And here's the other thing.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Is I see a lot of Laker and Clipper basketball
because I live here, right and so I watch on
local programming at there on I watch him. I watch
more Dodgers and football. We all watch all the teams
college football. I watched the big teams. But it's interesting.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I saw this. Luca Dantis yesterday said he really appreciates
Los Angeles accepting him, and my take his bro, it's
not that complicated. You're a star. They need one.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Lebron's getting old both Los Angeles basketball franchises. When I
watch Young Oklahoma City.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
And Young Indiana and Young.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Houston and Young San Antonio this year, boy, these franchises
have to look in the mirror. It's a collection of
old guys, guys past their prime, infrequently available guys, injury
prone guys, marginally in shape, guys like Luca, and weird guys.
And so the marquee for the movie is great. The
movie's not very good for the Clippers of the Lakers.
(03:18):
The Clippers should not have lost that series. You're talking
about a head coach for Denver that got inserted into
the team as a head coach against Tylu, one of
the better coaches.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
The Clippers were deeper, the.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Clippers had an advantage at coach and coaching matters, and
they still couldn't win. So you gott me just say
it out loud, forty year old Lebron out of shape,
Luca rarely available, Kawhi, and you know James harden Enough said, so,
I just I look at San Antonio and Houston and
Cleveland and Minnesota with ant and I see all these
(03:54):
Western teams. Now obviously Indiana's East, but I look at
a lot of these teams. Indiana's East, but you look
at a lot of these teams. It's like we said
this about the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis a couple of
years ago. We said this three years ago. It's over.
You may not know it. You have one great player,
but it's over. You're getting old and creaky. These LA teams,
this is like la fake LA nonsense. These are not
(04:16):
championship teams. JJ Reddick got work, Luca's out of shape,
Lebron's old and dried up in the fourth quarter. Austin
Reeves couldn't get to the free throw line.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
You're not close.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
You got completely dominated by Minnesota, and Minnesota just got
worked by Golden State. So playoff basketball is about being
in great shape, having a culture, an elite coach, multiple
wing defenders. Lakers don't have them, Clippers have the wing defenders.
Can't build a culture around Harden and Kawhi. And I
think there is a suggestion for one of these teams,
(04:48):
because I'm told Clippers are just gonna do what they're
doing and they're not gonna make any changes. Big mistake
to me, They'll just be the Clippers. The Lakers Lebron
James could enact actionable change. Here's a suggestion about Lebron
maybe taking a team friendly deal going forward.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
If I were Lebron, the thing you cannot buy with
whatever amount of money you do get in that contract
is championship rings. And if you took just the league
minimum and that allows a third really sort of huge
superstar to come in, he could get maybe two rinks,
and by the way, that puts him in one more ring,
puts them in the Kobe conversation. Two more rings puts
(05:30):
him in the Michael Jordan ring conversation. And I don't
care how much money the Lakers can pay him in
the next year or two. They can't pay him more
championship rings.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Yeah, Otherwise, I mean, you can't be watching Oklahoma City
in Indiana and Houston's talent and here comes Wemby and
Giannis is going to go to one of these teams
and then look at the Lakers and Clippers and go,
I feel great about our future. Too many weird, odd
rarely available, not in great shape, quirky guys. Again, the
(06:02):
marquee at the theater looks great. The movie's not with that.
Albert Breer Monday Morning quarterback is joining us. So you
tell me, I if Mike Tomlin bails on a high
maintenance player, the history shows you they disappear into the wilderness.
(06:23):
Bryant the wide receiver was great, He's gone. He disappears
Deontay Johnson. So it's just if Warren Buffett tells you
to sell the stock, sell the stock. If Kyle Shanahan
doesn't like a quarterback, I wouldn't go by him. I
think the Steelers told you this guy is a handful.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Were you surprised by the move.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
A little bit just at the timing.
Speaker 6 (06:44):
I know he was available before the draft, but I
thought once they got past the draft, maybe they would
bite the bullet and go with him for the rest
of the year. Now, there's certainly a lot of reasons
for them to move on. Right now, he is to
some degree redundant with DK Metcalf, which you know, they're
both ex receivers, they're both down the field targets, and
(07:05):
I think if you take that into account, Colin, one
thing you do have to consider is if this guy
was frustrated with the direction of the offense or his
role in the offense over the last couple of years,
where's that going to be if you get to October
and November and now all of a sudden you've got
life changing money on the line. Is that going to
get better or is that going to get worse? I'd
say it probably gets worse, you know. So I don't
(07:27):
think the Steelers thought this is a bad hearted guy.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
There's certainly not.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Like a host of off field issues that you're dealing
with with him. But you know, I do think they
looked at a player who because they weren't going to
pay him at the level he probably wants to be paid.
Could wind up being a problem for them as they
try to pursue a championship this year and try to
pursue a certain quarterback as well. And this is a
chance for them to get the pick they would probably
(07:52):
get in a cop pick a year earlier than they
would have gotten it. And now they clear the decks
and maybe they make a move for another veteran receiver
really like Calvin Austin. They got Roman Wilson they took
in the third round last year. And you know it's
a risk, but it's it's it's a logical calculator risk.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
So here's the other thing, CD Lamb and Dack. I
mean that a lot of targets and ceedee Lamb, even
when targeted the most, still complains about looks. I mean,
is he going to be okay getting forty percent of
his targets cut?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
I mean?
Speaker 6 (08:29):
And that's that to me, Colin is like why Brian
Schottenheimer is a really important figure here. It's this is
what you've put at the doorstep for your your first
year head coach, and how is that going to be handled?
And you know, it's something we won't really know until
we get to the fall. It's really easy for everybody
to hold hands and sing kumbe bay in May and June,
(08:50):
and I'm sure you're going to hear a lot of that.
It's more difficult when you know you're playing for playoff
position in October and November. And maybe the best thing
for the team is to keep feeding the ball to
Cede Lamb, and the best thing for the team is
for George Pickens to be a decoy. But again, it's
the same sort of dynamic I was talking about the Steelers.
(09:11):
Like George Pickens, if he's not signed long term at
that point, could be worried about his payday, and his
history has been that he's had trouble controlling his emotions
and his frustrations when he doesn't like the direction of
the offense or his role within it. So again, nothing
like horrible here, like you're going to have like this,
that this guy's going to tear your team apart. But
(09:33):
I think there is a reality to all of this
that's going to have to be managed early, and I
think there's gonna have to be a lot of clear
communication and I think a lot of this falls at
the feet of the the of the of the new
head coach who you know, Shot, He's got a great personality.
I think I'll do a great job building a culture there.
You know, one of his first jobs now is to
to make sure that everything is clear with the receiver
(09:55):
room as to the roles that they're going to play,
how that could play out over the course of the years.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
So there aren't a lot of surprises, or there aren't.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
At least a lot of things that you haven't already
forecasted on the play to those two guys.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
So I thought your reporting on Shaduur was the best
out there Shaduur Sanders. You know, I think a lot
of people just didn't want to be critical of Dion
Sanders because he's popular in the media, and you were
very upfront about it. Your reporting was great. I tend
to think by Thanksgiving he'll just potentially be the best
quarterback they have and the fans will be clammoring for
him because it's not a very good team and they'll
(10:28):
be losing games. Give me the latest report you have
on the quarterback situation in Cleveland, Albert.
Speaker 6 (10:34):
Yeah, I think the spring is gonna be really important,
you know, the next five or six weeks, because you
have in today's NFL a limited number of reps that yeah,
that that that that can go around in May and June,
and then a limited amount of reps that you have
for the summer. And this isn't just about having a
quarterback derby. It's about a team full of veteran players,
proud veteran players like Miles Garrett and Denzel Ward that
(10:57):
have designs and getting back to the playoffs they got
there two years ago. So a good chunk of training
camp is going to have to be about, Okay, who's
our quarterback.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
And how do we build around them?
Speaker 6 (11:06):
And how do we build some momentum in the summer
so we can hit the ground running when we get
to the fall. And it's easy to do when you
have two quarterbacks competing for snaps. It's more difficult when
you're trying to get time for all four of them.
Speaker 7 (11:19):
You know.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
And so I think you know, when you're looking at
where you're at in the spring, it's going to be
which veteran looks better, you know, Joe Flacco versus Kenny Pickett,
And how do the two rookies look and not only
are the rookies ready to compete to be a starter,
but or either of the rookies ready to be a backup.
You know that's going to be a big part of
the equation too, because that's going to affect how many
(11:39):
quarterbacks you keep. The guarantees in Flacco and picket steals
are almost identical, so the cost we're walking away from
either of those guys would be the same. And you
generally don't cut a third round pick, but this is
an unusual situation where you've got another guy at his
position that you took in the fifth round. So it's
complicated in just about every way. I would expect that
(12:00):
one of the two veterans will probably be the Week
one starter. And then, like you said, like so much
of either of the rookies finding a way onto the
field will be did they do enough in the spring
to get meaningful reps in the summer, Did they do
enough in the summer to prove themselves as viable options?
And then if one of the veterans doesn't play well
or the team doesn't play well, does that opportunity present
(12:21):
itself when you get to the later parts of the season.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Okay, so you know, it's funny about Aaron Rodgers. I
read a story this could have been you as well,
and I think this is actually smart. I had said
before the draft, Aaron should watch Kirk Cousins and not
not make a move until after the draft. And when
Pittsburgh went out and got Will Howard, it's like, okay,
that's a backup that has clearly a prospect a project.
(12:45):
Then there's a story out that Aaron is waiting for
the schedule to be released, and I actually defended him,
and I don't know if it's you. I think I've
been reading so much stuff on this. In my take
is Peyton Manning and Kirk Cousins they loved one o'clock windows.
Peyton crazy when he was dotted all on Thursday night
and Monday night. Yeah, And so what do you make
if there's a story out there about that, I kind
(13:08):
of buy it.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
What do you make?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Well, we know they're going to Dublin, right, so I
don't know how. I don't know how Aaron.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
Feels about visiting Ireland, but if that's something he's wanted.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
To do, that opportunity would be there for.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
This with the Steelers. So we know that that's gonna
be on their schedule. I mean, look like the Steelers
are a premier franchise. I would think that they're going
to have a fair amount of They're gonna have a
fair amount of primetime games regardless of whether or not
Aaron makes a decision between now and the schedule release
next week. They're one of those teams with the Cowboys
(13:44):
and the Packers that are always going.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
To be in primetime plenty.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
I actually think, Colin, I think you know, really, what
this is about, as much as anything else, is Aaron
taking his time, and I think we can all respect
you know what he said about this being a personal
situation that's held some things up. The Steelers are trying
to be respectful of it too.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Then.
Speaker 6 (14:06):
I actually think a decent sized chunk of this whole
thing is that the Steelers and Aaron both know, like
they both know that if he were to have signed
like three or four weeks ago, what are we all
talking about now? Why isn't he at the off season
program yet? Then Ota is starting a couple of weeks,
is he showing up? Then we get to mini camp?
Oh my god, he's not at mini camp. They avoid
(14:27):
all of this by not doing a deal now now
I think the rest of the Steelers, of course, and
not pushing it is that he could change his mind,
he could retire, There could be another opportunity that opens
up somewhere else that could be more appealing to him.
But the sense I've gotten to this point is that
he and the Steelers are on the same page. The
schedule release things kind of interesting, and maybe that could
(14:49):
affect his thinking.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
I'm just not sure.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
This thing is that fragile, where the schedule going one
way or the other could really make or break whether
or not he's a Steeler this year.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Okay, I could ask you about some other stuff, but
that's good. I uh hey, Fi, By the way, you're
a Buck guy, and I respect that. I think JJ
McCarthy is closer to Jackson Dart than Jayden Daniels. I
think there's a history that shows guys that come from
power programs that don't play, don't play from behind. Ohio
State quarterbacks, they don't play from behind. They play with
(15:22):
stack rosters, and they're not asked to win games. They're
often asked not to screw it up. I'm not a
JJ McCarthy guy. I was much more even though bow
Knicks didn't have a lot of deficits. Bow Knicks from
Auburn to Oregon had five different coordinators and there was
I mean, he was asked to a ton JJ McCarthy
(15:44):
was asked to hand the ball off with a seventeen
to three lead in the first quarter.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
What, Minnesota, What do you really hear about this?
Speaker 2 (15:54):
They that annoyed me. I know that I want I
want to totally.
Speaker 6 (16:01):
Here's what I would say. Here's what I would say. Like,
I think he played. I think he played really good
in big games at Michigan. I do think like to
your point that the lack of like the massive amount
of attempts and the lack of time played when you're
playing from behind, the lack of third and lungs because
of the great run team that he had there, it's
it limits his exposure in the NFL's exposure to a
(16:24):
lot of the things that separate good quarterbacks from great quarterbacks.
There are a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL that
can play in second and five, They can play in
third and two. There are fewer that can play when
they're down by seventeen and the pass rushers have their
ears pinned back. There are fewer that can operate in
an efficient way when it's third and fourteen, So we
have less evidence of JJ McCarthy doing that because of
(16:48):
how good the team around him was at Michigan. Doesn't
mean he can't do it, but it's something that you're projecting.
And obviously the Vikings were robbed of getting to test
him a lot of different ways because of the injury
last year, so they're projecting a little bit too. Now,
you know, we've been through everything that he went through.
He had a lot of ups and downs going through
the rehab and you know with the weight.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Loss and everything else.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
I've been told and Kevin O'Connell said this to me
a couple of weeks ago, that he's in a really
good place.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
His wait's back up.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
He is, i think, in a better place than he
was three, four or five months ago, and has been
in the facility every single day since the season ended.
What will that add up to, We'll see, because like
you said, there's still so many things that you are projecting,
because there are a lot of things that because of
how good the team he played with at Michigan was,
you are projecting with him.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Yeah, by the way, final season in college games with
thirty or more pass attempts BO Nicks ten JJ McCarthy won.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Yep. And that's it. That's it.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
I mean like that, it's a projection, it's a it's
a it's hard, you know, Like I hate to say this,
but this is sort of what like hurt Brady when
he was coming out of Michigan. I'm not making that garrison,
but it is like Brady was playing with Jeff Bachus
and Steve Hutchinson and David Terrell and Marquis Walker and
Anthony Thomas and a stout defense with first round picks,
(18:11):
like sometimes you have to make the I mean Peyton
Manning had some of that at Tennessee, you know.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
So, yes, there's definitely a projection.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
And again, like you have to, like to be a
great quarterback in the NFL, you have to be able
to play from behind, you have to be able to
play on third and long. And because of how good
the team around him was at Michigan, he didn't have
to do that a ton, which again means that you're
you're hoping that he winds up getting there as a problem.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Good stuff, Albert Breer, good.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
See anybody, Awesome thanks callin.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I always love asking Buckeyes what they think of Wolverines.
That's my favorite question and vice versa. No, I'm not
picking on anybody.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
I hope it works out well, but it's It's one
of the things I've always said why Alabama quarterbacks don't
crush when you play with the lead and a great
run game and the better coach.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
It's hard.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
It's not like it's almost like. Honestly, how many pro
athletes grow up rich. Most of most pro athletes in
my lifetime. You can go to international soccer stars in
Brazil or Croatia. Very few wealthy kids become great at
because it's hard.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Patrick Mahomes No, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
But Patrick Mahomes dad, they weren't wealthy. I'm saying, is
the struggle. I was just talking to somebody last night.
He is a music producer, and we were talking about
la kids and he was talking about, yeah, they don't
quite have the hunger. Well, the economy here is good.
Mom and dad are doing well. He goes, You know,
(19:43):
you can find a lot more talent. You ever watch
American Idol, it was the kid from rural Georgia, East Texas.
Those kids make it or they or it's a sad life,
you know. So it's like my takeaway has always been
on this, And what's the point when you play in
college football as a quarterback and you have very little discomfort.
(20:03):
You never throw under duress, you never you're never in
a third and twenty four game on the line.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
It's just an easier life.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
Matt Ryan and in tot to NFL guys, and Big
Ben was Miami of Ohio, and Josh Allen's at Wyoming,
and Mahomes is at Texas Tech, and Aaron's at Cal
and Golf's at Cal and Philip Rivers and c State.
It's not like just me making it up. You would
think that Ohio State would have eleven NFL quarterbacks. I
mean all you think about all time. But it's just
(20:33):
hard to play college for four years. And it is
not that it's a country club. But it's good eaton
being the quarterback with Jim harbaughd Colin.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
What about you, gouty Matt Jones, how's he panning out
in the league?
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Prime example?
Speaker 1 (20:45):
Never played trailing But if you start looking around, like.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
I mean, Jalen Hurts is probably in recent memory of
the best quarterba in Alabama.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
He got Transford.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Well, but he got bench.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Yeah, so he's a guy that's got somebody told him
you're not good enough in bench. So he was, you know, humbled,
Not that he needs it because he's such a good kid,
but that there is something to be say. A lot
of the quarterbacks had to transfer. Joe Burrow Ohio State.
You say, well he played at LS You No, no, No,
he's an Ohio kid. He wanted to be a buck
hy he had to transfer schools. I can go to
(21:15):
Louisiana and had Orage Wana new coaching staff.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
So he had some turbulence in his career. I said,
it's like you you can live over on the beach.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
What now I am. I grew up a hard scrabble
Northern Virginia.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
That North Virginia, Rich County more No, not even close outside,
definitely not.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
I know, Hey never did Europe or Asia as a kid.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
I know you're a.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
World five or a six car family.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
No, we are are big trips and I hope my
family's not watching you. We'd be like, hey, we're driving
to Canada to see some family members. We would drive
like nine hours to get I didn't fly up.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
We all did his kids.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Yeah, we like a lot of baller trips. You know,
the kids now are spoiled.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
They are, especially in your neighbor Nada Da.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
It isn't about me.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
Let's where'd you go last night? By the way, what
you have for dinner? Right?
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Anyways, so we're doing herdline.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
After the break with he.
Speaker 8 (22:09):
Sends me a picture of wine and steak. One more Heard.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Well, congratulations for the first American pope. Robert Prevost from
Chicago went to Villanova. So he's a culture guy totally.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
How about that.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Gotta speak Italian not Latin. But uh, is that the
first American pope?
Speaker 2 (22:38):
I think it is.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
I think so Chicago just winning the off season. Things
are happening and then they've been there Ben Johnson offensive
line rebuilt, and he's got to fix the bullet cool.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
People are crying, there's tears, there's children. It's amazing scene,
amazing scene. All right. J Mack with the News, this
is the Herd were mentioned on the show today, Yeah,
only went to Villanova.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
And Jalen Brusson has taken the next of the finals.
It's gonna be a Villanova all all next month. So
we haven't talked a lot about the met gala, which
was Monday night. Saquon Barkley was there and of course
they asked him on the red or blue or whatever
color carpet. It was, hey, man, what about the toosh push, Saquon?
If you don't like it, get better at stopping it.
It's not like a play that.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
We only do. Everyone tries it. We're just super successful
at it.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
He's not wrong, Colin. Don't be part of the NFL.
No fundly the wants to outlaw the tooch push.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Do not outlaw that.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
I like the touch push.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
I know you're against it because well, you know, there
is something to be said that it works because of
a uniquely gifted quarterback in Jalen Hurt's size and strength.
We've never had a quarterback, you know, squat six hundred
and sixty pounds. That's a big part of it. And
Howie Rolsman has built a brick wall of an offensive line.
(23:57):
So it's a personnel advantage. They're not rigging the system.
Their personnel is built for it to work. Like Buffalo
has a good old line, but their quarterbacks six six
and a half, So when Josh Allen jumps over, he's
an easy target. The problem with Hurts is you can't
get a shot at it. Grabs it, ducks goes down
and his leg strength is historical.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Try it against the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
It just doesn't it Just justin Herbert tried it, he
was too tall.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Daniel Jones Friday, that guy doesn't line got hurt.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Doesn't work. So it is based on personnel. It's not,
you know, it's it's harder for me to say no. Now,
I do think people can get hurt. I also think
it's awful aesthetically. But if you're arguing, hey, we came
up with something and our personnel is built for it
to work, everybody else in the league can use it. Now,
I do think because everybody else in the league doesn't
(24:45):
do it, that's an advantage to Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Everybody was doing it nine times a game. They would
ban it because it's ugly.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Well they still might ban it. Well, we'll see. Next
up is the Chargers.
Speaker 4 (24:57):
Colin yesterday you said they were maybe it was two
days of you said they were gonna win the division. Well,
you know, Jim Harbaugh mentioned that Herbert he wants to
get him to the Hall of Fame. Well, how about
this one. Chargers quarterback Eli Apple says Justin Herbert has
the most impressive armies ever seen and been able to
watch up close, adding the way the ball comes off
(25:17):
his hand is nothing short of amazing. Herbert definitely opened
my eyes. You're impressed by arms strength. Part that's part
of the reason I got this job on the show
My Arms.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Well, I think it's time to win the playoff games.
And I love him, but it's time.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Can they pull that off this year?
Speaker 1 (25:32):
Sure, they're gonna win their division by two games. They're gonna,
They're gonna, they're gonna be Listen, you guys doubted me
on Denver and Washington. They're gonna win their division going away.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
So we have, like the four obvious before horsemen, the
four great quarterbacks in the league. The fifth spot has
been a revolving door. Rember Trevor Lawrence had a shot.
I put Jalen Hurts there. I think you kind of
lean Herbert as the fifth best quarterback.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Stafford I think is better in big game situations.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Be a veteran. He's got like fifteen years on.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
So yeah, I mean he's top ten. We all know that.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
C J.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Stroud him.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
I don't need a ton of playoff wins by c J.
Stroud or Justin Herbert. My eyes tell me they're great.
It's again we get so caught up on this. Like
Lamar Jackson, he wins seventy seven percent of his game.
He's really good. I'll resign him.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
I was trying to think of an NBA player comparison
for Herbert, someone who all the stats guys love, right,
He's he's toolsy, he's got the freight and everything, but
the results aren't quite there. But I couldn't really come
up with anyone.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Well, the results were there except the playoff game, and
they're just a all that matters is the playoff.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
No, that's not true. That's not Dan Marino's an all
time great.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
He went to a super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
Come on in twenty years, Come on, nobody covered at
zero playoff wins and baseball.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
In the NFL. Winning matters in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
But if you're an unbelievably profound regular season winner like
Lamar Jackson, Lamar's going to go to the Hall of
fame if he never wins this a lot. Absolutely, Eli
Manning wasn't good enough. He has had to win super
Bowls to get in. Philip Rivers wasn't good enough. He
had to win super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
At what point do we say, hey, Herbert, can you
win me a playoff game?
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Like?
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Is that too much to ask?
Speaker 3 (27:10):
I'm pro Herbert.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
I think they're very good.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
How about how about I make a small bet this
is the year he'll win one or three. I still
think they have a chance. Excuse me, I think they
have a chance to win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
I think it's time for a Herd hierarchy.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
They got to be out ten, then.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Yeah they are Chargers.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Win this. I think after the draft, Najie Harris, I
think they're sixth, seventh, fifth, sixth, best team in the league.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Do they have the worst wide receiver room in the
in the NA I don't think.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
I don't think it's great. But that's not Harball's history.
He didn't have a bigger receiver room at Michigan, San Francisco, Stanford.
That's not ever been his thing. By the way, is
the best receiver room? Did New England have it?
Speaker 3 (27:51):
A lot?
Speaker 2 (27:51):
I'm not asking for them. I'm just asking for not.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Kansas City's receiver room the last two years. You know
who had a great receiver room a couple of years. Miami, congrats,
congrats Miami.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
And okay, let me rephrase the question, mister, like this
is the courtroom. Can they get to the Super Bowl
with Ladi McConkey as their number one receiver?
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Well, he will.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
It'll be a run team, first, fifty five percent run team.
You can get to the NFL. A flat is your
highest producing receiver, but you have to have twos and threes.
By the way, the two best receiving course in the
league last year were Cincinnati he missed the playoffs and Minnesota. Uh,
Kansas City's got two trophies and Egles won the Super
Bowl with aj Brown and DeVante's said, no, there were
(28:32):
two top ten receivers. They were, but when I think
of them, I think of Sakwon Barkley. I don't think
of their receivers.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Well, that's a new problem, my friend.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
Final story cause to the NBA where the Knicks came
back from down twenty in Game two, and this has
become a trend, the comeback win with the fifth time
in these playoffs. The team has come back from down
twenty to get a win. Wow, Colin, that is historic stuff.
And we can't just chalk it up to three pointers.
I don't think we can just chalk it up to
(29:00):
physical play. Is there something else that we're missing here
on I think the thunder Grizzly gave me. You know what,
John Morant got hurt in this second as so that
one's so.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
It's a great question. Why do we have so many
comeback wins?
Speaker 1 (29:12):
Number one is the three point shot allows you to
catch up fast. Number two is we don't have a
great team in the league right now. There are no
I was told, okay, see almost won seventy games.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Not great.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
They they've never been to a finals with this group
of guys.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
So when you don't have a great team, you have
a lot of really good teams losing home games and
blowing leads. And over the last seven to eight we
thought Denver was going to be great. No, Denver's very good.
I thought Boston was great. They looked like they're terrified.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
So what is boss?
Speaker 2 (29:46):
They are they great?
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Well?
Speaker 1 (29:48):
I think they have things they're great at. They have
depth of roster, a lot of ball handlers, passers and shooters.
I think their front office is great, but there's a
lack of a aggressiveness from their star that is noticeably
absent in big spots.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
Do you how much is coaching a factor? Because one
thing I noticed that in that Pacers come back two
nights agoing against the Caps, Indiana had twenty six, twenty
six points in the faint in the fourth quarter. Yeah,
they just were gonna run.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
Pick and roll, right. Carlisle is a great coach.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
Carlisle hundred week Kerr. I think Finch and Kerr are
excellent coaches.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
Watching Boston New York last night, I'm expecting Boston to
just say, let's get some switches, Tatum on Brunson on the.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Block and you get a bucket. There was none of that.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
Colent Well, I don't think Missoula's viewed as Steve Kerr.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Would you give me a percentage that Joe Missoula if
they lose this series Joe Mossula's fire.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
No, they don't. That's that's not how they often time out.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Michael Malone just got run on that.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
Michael Malone is a disagreeable, hot tempered coach that Missoula
is not he's got great religious conviction. He is very centered,
he's not a screamer. He's a different cap zero.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Percent chance With zero, I have a feeling some people
are gonna click this off and hold it over your head.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Zero percent.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Did you fire him if he loses to a really
good Knicks game.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
I didn't say I would, but this is embarrassing. When
you're blowing twenty point leads at home in the third quarter, Colin,
that's really that.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
It can't just be on the stars. I would say
at least twenty five percent chance of Mizoola's gone.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
Well, that's not how the Celtics offer.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
So you got zero, I got twenty five.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Why in the world they I said this two days ago.
The Celtics are a weird champion. They're better on the
road than at home. Their star is passive. I mean,
they don't historically make sense, but they're so well drafted
and well constructed that they're just they almost have a
(31:50):
little bit of a cheat code. With a new CBA,
nobody else would have this many good player. Yes, the
CBA comes into the middle of it and you can't
do this as this. The Celtics are like, well, we've
already done it. We're all grand is so uh.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
Sprad Stevens built an amazing team. They've got an incredible roster.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
That's topic.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
How about this.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Now?
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Is this a legitimate site or the fake one?
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Ah, let's down fall for anything.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
Okay. According to Brian Windhurst, I really like Wendy. I
don't know about you, but I think he's very good.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
The Celtics could break up if they lose this series
against the Knicks. According to wind Horse Windy quote, there's
a possibility this team is not gonna come back. That's
what's on the line. Well, if they if they by
the way, if they got beat like in five, and
you're like, holy guy, then you would just make moves because,
(32:38):
by the way, they have a new owner and they're
very expensive, and that guy could be saying time out,
I'm paying.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
This and you can't beat the mix.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
Then that doesn't totally Remember I floated the Yiannis for
Jalen Brown package about two months ago. I'm just telling
you they can go and get Yannis because they've got pieces, right,
and you pair Giannison Tatum in Boston that's formidable.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
That's interesting because I would take Jalen Brown would be
a very nice piece. But I would need four draft picks,
Jalen Brown, Peyton Prichard.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
I'm off my back corpse set.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
Give me Brown, Peyton Prichard, four draft picks, Bran, and
then then a bench like a like A.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Giving you a finals MVP and Jalen Brown an All
star time out. You're not getting four picks, fine, go
ahead and take the Houston offer. Go ahead, take all
enjoying all you.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Okay, I'm giving you a three first round Jalen Brown,
Peyton Prichard in a big somewhere. Maybe Scalabrini comes back
and play.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Listen.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
I would take Jayleen Brown if I if I was walking,
I would.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
Take him over U Jyleb.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
If you give me Peyton Pritchard and Jalen Brown, I'm
gonna have the best bench. Guy argued lead an All
Star guard.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
He might start at uh Peyton Pitcher.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
I don't know he's gone right contract. He's a good player.
I like him. He's a he's a he's a dog.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
I like him.
Speaker 8 (33:54):
J Mack with a new Well, that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the herd Line news.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
A lot of things happen sometimes, you know when you
have big news and you can't announce it. J Mac,
there's a lot of stuff happened in the world.
Speaker 4 (34:08):
Wait, I just I thought you revealed the pope stuff
like fifteen minutes ago.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
Isn't it crazy? He's a Villanova guy. Yeah, I mean,
it's honest that Villanova's taking over the world.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
So people are now finding stories where the Pope said
a certain political vice president he was wrong about all
this stuff. He's like, they're finding old stories.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
To choose the pope, you have to speak Italian.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Yeah, we know.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Mostly they're upstanding guys with a certain moral code.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
Yes, moral code is interesting.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
You have a high moral code.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Oh, certainly. But I think, like, what do you do?
Speaker 1 (34:40):
Like, I mean, how do you choose Chicago guy in
THEE guy? I mean, why what do you do you
go to the rivals dot com rating or something like?
What is there a rating of power rating of popes?
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Four star recruit coming out of wherever popes come?
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Villanova helped him, I'll be honest. It's the Herd.
Speaker 2 (34:57):

Is Kyle Tucker leaves the Cubs against Juan Soto and
the Mets when the Giants tick on Byron Buxton and
the Twins. Check local listings for the game in your
area Saturday at seven eastern on.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
Five for the record.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
You know, Pittsburgh when they had Big Ben, the knock
on them and it was legitimate.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Is are you planning for the future.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
You know a lot of these teams, like Green Bay,
they'll get their Jordan Love or their Aaron Rodgers years
and years in advance.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
But that's just not the way it works.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
In Pittsburgh. It was Big Ben's franchise. He could get
a little dramatic or prickly if you drafted somebody like
Mason Rudolph instead of going out and getting like, you know,
another receiver whatever.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
So this is interesting.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
When the Steelers traded George Pickens to the Cowboys, they
got a third round pick. Well, they're also already getting
four compensatory picks next year, the most in the NFL.
So right now the Steelers already have twelve picks.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
What does that tell you? It tells you The Browns,
the Rams, and now the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Are building a draft room, building draft picks to go
up and get their franchise quarterback. And so what Pittsburgh
probably said is Shaanor Sanders was not that much more
highly graded than Kenny Pickett, and that's not good enough
for our standards. So what Pittsburgh's doing is accumulating. This
is what the Rams and the Browns did during the draft.
(37:24):
They accumulated another first round pick. So right now the
Rams have two firsts, a second, a third, two fIF
TUSA get rid of all of those things to get,
you know, the number two quarterback. They're going to be
too good obviously to get the number one quarterback. And
anybody that's getting arch Man, he has not given it up.
I would imagine you're a bad team you need a quarterback.
But I think what the Steelers told you is we
(37:46):
didn't think this draft class, because they had the twenty
first pick. The Steelers telling you, we didn't think this
class had outside of maybe cam Ward and we weren't
going to give away the farm for camp. We didn't
think it had a number one quarterback. So we'll go
get Will Howard and move Mason Rudolph here in a
year or two. That's our backup we're getting. We're accumulating
(38:06):
draft picks Omark Com, the GM and Tomlin. We're going
we're gonna trade these things and get because our defenses said,
the old lines got some good young players.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Tight end is set.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
So I mean, I again, Pickens, once you sign DK Metcalf,
you had a very good receiver in the contested catch
catching radius category and also one that has a little
bit of maintenance.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
DK wants the ball a lot. Don't blame him.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Here's Albert Breer earlier on the Steelers' decision to trade
Pickens the Dallas for a third round pick.
Speaker 6 (38:42):
I don't think the Steelers thought this is a bad
hearted guy. There's certainly not like a host of off
field issues that you're dealing with with him. But you know,
I do think they looked at a player who, because
they weren't going to pay him at the level he
probably wants to be paid, could wind up being a
problem for them as they try to pursue a championship
this year and try to pursue a certain quarterback as well.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
They really like Calvin Austin.
Speaker 6 (39:05):
They got Roman Wilson, and they took in the third
round last year, and you know it's a risk, but
it's it's a logical calculator risk.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
Yeah, I think, and I think the winner on this
will be the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are going to have
a bunch of picks. They're going to be able to
move up, you know, fifteen spots. Let's say Pittsburgh. And
because Pittsburgh right now with Will Howard, so think about
what Pittsburgh's thinking. We draft Will Howard, Mason Rudolph in
that division at best, that's a seven eight win team.
(39:35):
I'm sorry it is. And by the way, Tomlin, Tomlin
now knows he and Omar Kahn are on the same page.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
My job's not in jeopardy. It's a plan. And so
it's not gonna You're not gonna lose any sleep.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
If Tomlin's record is broke, because I'm sure they've had
these discussions in the building where Mike Tomlin said, yeah,
I know, I've never had a losing season. It would
really help with all these Halft picks if we were
already drafting eleventh and not eighteenth.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
So if the Pittsburgh Steelers win, let's.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
Say they go with seven and ten, because they're just
not good enough at quarterback playing the AFC.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
I mean, think about it.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
You don't think that's generous. Seven and ten, not on
a Mason Rudolph.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
No, no, no, I'm saying, but I think Tomlin the defense.
So Mason Rudolph, Will Howard. Let's so let's go seven
and ten. That's gonna get you about the tenth draft pick. Okay,
it's much easier to go ten to three than it
is seventeen or eighteen to three. Then you've got to
give up multiple ones. So Pittsburgh saying, I mean they've
had these discussions.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Guys.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
It's not that we're punting on this year. But if
we don't have a starting quarterback and we want to
find one, what we don't want to do is be
a non super Bowl team that wins nine games, gets
in and we're drafting twenty first and now we have
to give up nine picks to move up to the sixth.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Okay, well, if that's the goal, why would you get
DK Metcalf?
Speaker 2 (40:55):
What's the point Why not just o openly TENK?
Speaker 1 (40:57):
Because because you want want a star receiver in the
room when you eventually next year land your guy.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Yeah, Metcalf's getting old.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
I will push back against the GM.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Colin.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
Hey, man, if I'm the owner, what was your game
plan this offseason? Did we get better?
Speaker 1 (41:11):
No?
Speaker 2 (41:12):
We let Russ walk out the door. He's starting.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
We let just a Fields walk out the door.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
He's starting. We have no plan.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
Let me defend's Rogers. Let me defend him. They do
have a plan. They have a plan.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Do you want the GM to tell the owner, the billionaire, Hey,
I got a plan. It's we're gonna stink and get
a great They've.
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Got compensation for all these guys walking out the door.
They got comp picks. So they have twelve picks already.
So they already have twelve.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
They could end up with thirteen or fourteen, and they're
gonna use seven of these to go from the eleventh
or twelfth draft pick thirteenth to get to three. They'll
probably get the second best quarterback. Because we are of
a saturation point now, I mean twenty teams have their guy.
Twenty three teams at least have a guy that they're
not worried about drafting a guy.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
So I think pits all defend picks.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
You think bunting on Rogers?
Speaker 1 (42:03):
No, No, No, I think they could bring Aaron in
for a year. But my question is, let's say they
bring Aarin for a year. I think it only makes
them about a game to two better, not nine wins,
maybe eight nine.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
You saw Aaron last year.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
He's a pocket quarterback learning a new system Arthur Smith.
Speaker 3 (42:21):
That doesn't scream twelve wins to me
