How about Friday? Now, Friday, I'm busy tonight, I'm super busy,
Rams Vikings. How about next week we go out. I'll
share some trade secrets. No kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Oh are there six things as trade secrets in sports media?
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Please?
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Okay, I can't wait for this. Well, yeah, it's pretty obvious.
You don't know what those trade trade secrets are.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
What night?
Speaker 5 (01:00):
I need to lock it in the calendar.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
How about Tuesday?
Speaker 5 (01:04):
Tuesday should be killed?
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Okay, Okay, ask your wife. I trust her to run
by the warden.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
As they like to say, that's a joke. That's a
dad joke that everybody uses.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I'm sure she's laughing heartily right now. Okay, so the
World Series starts tomorrow. It's gonna be a bonus. We
got very lucky. The Yankees felt like the best team
in the American League. They've got, you know, a stable
of really good starting pitching, and so if it comes
down to a pitching series, Yankees have an advantage. Dodgers
have to really get that bullpen to ham. It did
against the Podreys, it did against the Mets, but the
(01:39):
Yankees are a different animal. So we we thought, I
always do this for a World Series, a national championship,
you know, an NFC championship, NBA finals. I put down
I tend to like who has the most good players
because I don't think, you know, I think your stars
carry you to championships. So in order of who I
think right now, the ten best players in the World Series,
(02:02):
here we go with number ten, Tommy Edmund for the Dodgers.
First of all, versatile, experienced NLCSMVP leads the Dodgers and
hits and stolen bases this postseason. I mean, he's been clutch,
he's versatile, he can run, you get extra bases. He's
got power, and the guy's playing a different position than
(02:23):
he was several months ago. He has been a total
spark plug for this team. The NLCSMVP Tommy Edmonds at ten,
number nine, a guy that when the Yankees and Dodgers
played at Yankee Stadium earlier this year kind of dominated
the weekend. Taoscar Hernandez, a two time All Star, one
of the best under the radar signings in Major League
(02:45):
Baseball this year. Now he struggled in the NLCS. That's
why I'm gonna put him lower. He can be a
bit hot and cold. Power hitting guys can, but he's
in a great spot in the batting order behind O,
Tawny and Bett, so he gets good pitches to hit right.
So got real power. Go back to that Yankee series
in New York. He can take games over Number eight,
(03:05):
I would do. Third baseman Max Munsey, a two time
All Star. The best way to say it is he's
led this entire franchise and on base percentage in the
playoffs that's pretty good when you got a roster like
the Dodgers. At one point he rached reached base in
twelve consecutive plate appearances. People don't do that in Williamsport.
(03:25):
That's like not even a realistic Little league stat. Monthsey's
one of those guys everybody forgets about, but when he
gets smoking again, he can carry you. He can carry
you through big late inning surges. Max Munsey Number seven,
John Carlos Stanton, five time All start. Now he led
the Yankees seven extra base hits this postseason right heat.
(03:47):
But he's also a power guy, so you know, power
guys like a tay Oscar Hernandez sometimes can disappear. He
has sixteen home runs though in thirty six playoff games,
so they got him for a reason, playoffs delivering bombs.
I put him in number seven, number six, And this
guy may be the key to the series is Garrett
Cole always been a good postseason pitcher in this postseason
(04:11):
three starts, three point three, one er eight. Now, guys
don't throw complete games anymore, so I don't have a
lot of starting pitching in my top ten. It's not
like ten years ago where you could say, oh, yeah,
Berlander is gonna go two full games. That's not what
you're gonna get here. But he's a six time All Star,
a cy Young winner a year ago. And again he
could pitch in game one game you know what, if
(04:33):
you have a rain in New York, maybe Game four,
a couple of innings in Game seven, he could decide
the series. Garrett Cole number five. He's gotten extra time
off Freddy Freeman, an eight time All Star, got him
from Atlanta. He's absolutely delivered. A great guy, locker room guy.
Now he missed some time in the NLCS, but you
get big time power and a guy that just always
(04:54):
feels like to me can burst the game open now
again hitting singles now, he's not gonna leg stuff out.
You're not getting a triple out of a double and
a double out of a single with him. He's limping,
but he has had extra rest, and I put him.
I'd be surprised if he didn't have a good World Series.
Freddie Freeman at five one, Soto at number four. Now again,
(05:15):
if this guy was MVP of the series, you wouldn't
be shocked. He may become the richest player in baseball
here in a few months.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Here.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
What's great about him is he walks a ton. He
gets on base, he doesn't strike out. He hits for power.
I mean if it wasn't for guys like that are
above him on this list. You know, there's arguments that
he's one of the great players in the last ten
years in terms of pure talent. If he's the MVP
of this series, nobody in the world will be surprised.
Hit three sixty eight during the ALCS just an all
(05:42):
time great talent. Number three in a bit of a slump.
Aaron Judge, Now again, he is a power hitter, and
I'm always a little worried about power hitters. In the
postseason taoscar Hernandez. If you told me he had a
bad series, I wouldn't be surprised. If Aaron Judge struggled,
I wouldn't be shocked. He was only five for thirty
one with thirteen strikeouts in the postseason. So again, and
(06:04):
the Dodgers know this, like he can be hot and cold,
but he did. You know he did lead baseball and
home runs and RBIs and slugging percentage. Also a great guy.
Number two. I think he's one of the most verse.
He reminds me of Joe Morgan as a kid growing up.
What doesn't he do well? Morgan could run field, power average,
Mookie Betts Over the last nine games, he's hitting three
(06:26):
forty two. He played shortstop, he plays outfield. He leads
the Dodgers with eight extra base hits. Here's a guy
Freddy Freeman won't. But if you need a single turn
to a double, a double to a triple, it's Mookie Betts.
You get speed, you get I don't even know how
he generates all this power for his size. You get
massive versatility. He has played outfield, second base, shortstop. I
(06:46):
still can't believe the Red Sox let him go. They've
never been the same franchise if it's not for Otawni.
He's the best player, most versatile player in baseball. Mookie
Betts Again, how does he generate all that power he does?
He's amazing. Number one show hey o tawny eighteen for
his last twenty three with men in scoring position. Again
(07:08):
at the College World Series, that would be insane. He's
batting seven eighty three with twenty eight RBI. He leads
all players this postseason. Twelve runs scored, reached Bay sixteen
times in the NLCS. There's my ten. So you got one, two, three,
(07:32):
I got six Dodgers, four Yankees, anything bother you? I
don't know's.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
It looks like one of your better lists. Pretty solid.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I mean I would maybe quibble with Bets versus Judge.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
You could argue Judge would be second.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
I think the versatility of bets in a postseason. The
versatility I get with bets. I think it's power hit
Like if Aaron Judge hit six home runs, you would
not be surprised, but if he had thirteen strikeouts, you
would not be surprised. I get with milky bats. I'm
going to get average power, speed, versatility that are I'm
(08:09):
going to get a lot more guarantees with bets than
I am judging this series.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
And we don't have a ton of pictures. Just one
guy on the list.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
I remember, right, for the casual fans, we're not gonna
see like two to one games.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Like starting five starting pitchers are going six innings. I'm
not getting Justin Verlander who gives me two complete games.
That's not what you're getting anymore. So it's hard for
me to put pictures up there. Greg two y are
baseball savant in the backs, probably Grumblin. I don't have
any astros on my top ten.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
Oh that's a shot.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Wow, where are they by the way where they go.
I see Houston lately. Let's bring in Greg Cosel forty
five years NFL films. Here we go. This is an
old school world series, old school world series. So let's
let's start with Kansas City. They face the Raiders and
they just came out of the big game of the weekend,
(09:00):
so we all know this.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Now.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Spags is great, Brett Veach is drafted. I mean, I
don't know where he finds all these guys, but they
just have an endless supply of corners and safeties and
linebackers that run. What did they do, though, Greg, what
did the film say they did to make brock Purty
so ineffective?
Speaker 6 (09:20):
Well, I think it's what they kind of do colin
to everybody, and you don't see it a ton in
the league. They play a ton of press coverage, so
now the burden is on your receivers. They have to
be able to win and separate versus man coverage. The
other thing they do, which is different, and they do
it perhaps better than any team in the league, maybe
(09:41):
with the exception of Todd Bowles and the Bucks, is
use defensive backs as blitzers, and when you line up
a lot in reduced splits. In other words, when you
have your receivers closer to the formation, which the Niners do.
There are a number of teams in the league that
do this. Those corners are in much cre closer proximity
to the quarterback and therefore they become much more effective
(10:04):
as blitzers. And they also have safeties who are very,
very good blitzers. Justin Reid is a very good blitzer.
Shamari Connor number twenty seven, who's become a real factor
this year, is a really good blitzer. So the combination
of playing a ton of press man with Steve Spagnolo
really believes it. In today's NFL, with the increase in
(10:25):
these quick timing throws, so many passing games now are
three step timing drops quick five step timing. It's very
very difficult to get to the quarterback and impact him
on normal down and distance plays.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
So what do you have to do.
Speaker 6 (10:39):
You've got to disrupt receivers, and that's what Steve Spagnola
does extremely well, and it's very difficult for teams. So
the Niners struggled with it a bit in the Super
Bowl against the Chiefs, and they struggled with it in
this past weekend.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Okay, so very rarely do I look at something and
just go wow. I didn't think. I mean, Justin Fields
was winning enough. He was athletic, relatable, he's young. Nobody
in Pittsburgh liked to move to Russell Wilson, and after
the first couple series, all of us who were cynics
looked really smart, and then something clicked and Russell in
(11:17):
the second half moved. He was good in the red zone.
He did those little fades to a tight end a
receiver and it's like, boy, with this defense, Tomlin, Nase, Harris,
Arthur Smith, it's like, oh, that's a pretty good team.
What did you see, especially in that second half with
Russell Wilson and the Steelers.
Speaker 6 (11:41):
Colin It's the Seahawks profile. It's same thing he did
in Seattle for all those years. It's run game profile,
run game foundation.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
As the starting point. It's play action and play action boot.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
It's schemed throws so that the reads are clean and defined,
and then it's taking shot the field.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
He's a great deep ball thrower.
Speaker 6 (12:02):
So Pickens will become probably more of a factor in
terms of targets volume because they'll take those shots which
he's very very good at and he's very good at
those fade kinds of throws. So it's basically going to
be the same profile and the same formula we saw
when he was in Seattle, because that's who he is.
He's not necessarily a drop back progression reader, so that's
(12:25):
not the way you play with Russell Wilson.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
They had a number of really.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
Cool concepts of play action boot where they clearly attacked
voids in zones and they did a really really good
job with it. There was a play to Darnell Washington,
there was a plate to Friar Muth for thirty yards,
just really well schemed plays. But they're going to look
very much like the Seattle Seahawks when Wilson was there.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Yeah, well that's not a bad thing. So listen, we
all kind of thought that Amari Cooper and Buffalo and
by the way, the Bills go to Seattle to face
the Seahawks and one of the more intriguing games this weekend.
But we all kind of thought, you know, Amari was
a good fit. But what is also really crystal clear,
Josh Allen's not throwing picks, and again, Amari Cooper is
(13:11):
a good route runner, and you know quarterbacks like dependability
with their route runners. They don't want to throw in guests.
So my take is Josh Allen and Amari Cooper the
films should say eventually this is a nice fit as
they had to Seattle.
Speaker 6 (13:30):
Yeah, And I think one of the things that stood
out this week, and in some ways I've been waiting
to see this. When I watch passing games, particularly against
zone coverage.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
One of the things I really look for.
Speaker 6 (13:40):
The Lions are great at this with Ben Johnson is spacing,
spacing of routes because you're trying to find voids in
zone coverage and you're trying to put zone coverage secondary
players in conflict because they have multiple areas in which
they have to cover. And I thought that the Bills
did a really good job with it this week. And
what that does is it really defines the throw for
(14:02):
the quarterback, because you and I both know as good
as Josh Allen is, and no one would argue that
he's not in the top three or four quarterbacks in
the league. When he doesn't feel like he sees it
clearly right away, what does he do, Colin? He moves,
So there are times he leaves the pocket prematurely. So
if you can really define it for him, and you
made a good point about Cooper as a rout runner,
(14:24):
but if you can define it for him with really
outstanding spacing in your route concept, then he's going to
play more consistently from the pocket and play well from
the pocket.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Yeah. So I want to talk Baltimore Ravens and it
just's I find them the most entertaining watch. It's so
much fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Why.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
It's probably simple, but I don't think Derrick Henry would
have been this good on any other team. He would
have been fine, But he looks like, you know, Derrick
Henry five years ago. Is it just Lamar? Is that
why he's a perfect fit, Because it seems to me
a month ago we worried about the Ravens old line.
Why is Derrick Henry such a great fit?
Speaker 6 (15:09):
Yeah, you know, I'm not sure he's anything different than
he was. I mean, he's certainly had all those great
years in Tennessee, and he's on a team that obviously
has a full, fully dimensional offense. I mean, Lamar Jackson
is playing really high level football. But there's no question
that the Lamar factor in the run game definitely adds
(15:30):
to Henry because the backside pursuit can't get to Henry
the way it might if you just have a more
conventional quarterback, because you have to account for Lamar Jackson
in the run game, and that dictates how defenses have
to align, so very often that backside pursuit is not
a factor at all. But Henry to me, essentially looks
(15:51):
like he did in Tennessee. He always gets long runs.
I mean, you're looking right now at that what eighty
one yard run? And I think he was genuinely prize
that the corner was there. But no, I don't think
he looks any different. I just think this is a
really fully dimensional offense. Lamar Jackson is playing great football. Physically,
we know what Lamar is mentally. I think he's playing
(16:13):
better than he ever has so, and now you have
quality receivers. But what's so interesting about then Colin They
play the lowest percentage of three wide receiver personnel of
any team in the league. This is a team that
plays with Recard the full back. They play with what
we call twenty two personnel with Recard and two tight ends.
(16:33):
They're very different from pretty much every team in the
league in what they do from a personnel standpoint.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
All right with the Cowboys are sort of unraveling and imploding,
but they are going to San Francisco and the Niners
are all beat up on offense. The Cowboys are a
little beat up on defense. I think at the trading deadline,
my take is they'll only be able to do so
much offensively. And in the NFC. Now Detroit's Minnesota stacked,
(17:01):
green based act, Philadelphia stacked. You can't win big in
the NFC with Dallas's personnel, are you or are you
seeing something I'm not. I just think they're limited.
Speaker 6 (17:12):
No, well, they can't run the ball up to this point.
All we have is what's up to this point. Obviously
they had a bye week. I'm sure they did a
lot of self scouting. We'll see what they come out with,
but up to this point they've been unable to run
the ball. And the fact is, and I like Dak Prescott.
I think he's a very good player. But Dak Prescott
(17:32):
has settled into in his career and there's nothing wrong
with it, because you could argue somewhat Jared Gobs the
same way. He just says more with his offense but
with no run game, it's very difficult for Dak. They
can't run the ball at all, and he's forced to
drop back too much. They're playing with a rookie left tackle,
they're playing with a right tackle that's not a great
pass protector.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
So now you have major limitations to your offense.
Speaker 6 (17:56):
So it becomes a week to week proposition based on
who you're playing. Again, so this week, I guarantee you'll
see Nick Bosa line up numerous times on the right
side of the defensive line. So he goes against the
rookie Tyler Geiden, who did not have a lot of
experience playing at Oklahoma and then he was moved to
left tackle in the NFL, so you'll see. You know,
(18:16):
they have problems on their offense that a run game
would be able to help, but up to this point,
they've really had no run game at all.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Okay, let's talk briefly about RAMS hosting the Vikings tonight. TJ.
Howkinson comes back, what does he do, what does he
add to darnld Kevin O'Connell a tight end beyond versatility
and is he a real cog in this machine?
Speaker 4 (18:42):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (18:43):
For sure, because they play a lot at a twelve
personnel with two tight ends. But he's explosive, he can
run the scene. He has a vertical dimension to his game,
and he's very very good run after catch. You know,
he was the tight end before Laporta, and Hockinson is
probably a more explosive athlete than Laporta. So he adds
(19:03):
a ton to their offense. And this is an offense
that attacks at all three levels really really effectively. So again,
it's his first game back. I don't know what that
means tonight. Very often it takes guys, you know, a
couple of games to get back, but overall, he really
adds another multi dimensional player to their pass game. And
as you know, Darnold's still playing really good football.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
So you came on the show the year Jordan Love
was getting discussed, and here's what Greg kosel. He loved
a young quarterback out of Utah State. This is our
Carson Wentz. Nobody hears about him, and you go out
and go there's this kid in North Dakota. So Jordan
(19:47):
Love at.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Utahs stas State.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
He has the overall skill set to be in the
discussion for a top five pick in the twenty twenty draft.
He's got arm strength, he's got pace and touch. He
threw with precise ballplay. He's got athleticism and move He's
got second reaction ability.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
He's a natural thrower.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Coach, how about that twenty nineteen our show, I didn't
have a full head of silver hair. Things have really changed.
But obviously you loved him. Then you give me that notebook.
You give it to me personally every year before the
draft so I can cheat and get my notes. You
loved him. Some of my GM buddies were a little gunshy.
(20:25):
They weren't sure about him. So has he become what
you saw?
Speaker 6 (20:31):
Well, it's funny because then his last year in college,
with a change in coaching staff and a lot of
lesser players, he did not have a good year, and
therefore he dropped. But the traits remain. He has become
what I thought he could become. Everything you heard me
say there back in twenty nineteen. He's now showing in
the NFL. And one thing I really like about him,
and I've talked with coaches about this, is he may
(20:53):
be the most aggressive thrower in the league.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
Now, at times because of that, he can be a
little reckless, but Here's what most coaches will tell you.
You can dial a guy down, and once he gains experience,
sometimes he learns that himself.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
But you can't dial a guy up. So if a
guy is.
Speaker 6 (21:09):
A checkdown artist, it's very hard to get him to
make those difficult throws that you have to make at
the NFL level, at the intermediate levels, Whereas.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
He has no problem making those throws.
Speaker 6 (21:20):
And yes, every once in a while he'll make one
that's a head scratcher, But he is such an aggressive
thrower and he's such an easy thrower. He threw a
touchdown this week to Craft that was a big time
arm strength throw.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
He was probably a hair laid throwing it.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
And I know Bullock, the former USC safety, probably thought
he was going to make the play, but the ball
had such velocity that he couldn't. And arm strength does matter.
It's not the only thing we know that, but arm
strength does matter. But he is a very aggressive thrower.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
So the play of the week is with Jordan Love
take it away.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
Yeah, let's look at this. This is a great example
of what I'm talking about too. This was the touchdown
he threw a last week. So let's take a look
at it to Dantavian Wicks, and this was against cover two.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
This is a big time throw. It might look easy
because he's such an easy throw over.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
The football, but let's start with the fact that we're
going to see him in the gun and it's going
to be a two by two set. So now what
they're going to call here is they're going to call
four verticals.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
That's what the route concept is. It's a very common
route concept in the league. Four verticals. Now, what you're
going to get here.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
Initially, what he's looking at is a too high structure,
two deep safeties. But what this is actually going to be,
which is part of a too high structure of course,
is cover two. So you're going to see cover two here,
which is a good coverage for four verticals because the
corners are not deep players. So now when Wicks, who's
now he's the number one plus split outside the numbers
(22:53):
to the wide side of the field, he is going
to run the vertical route.
Speaker 4 (22:57):
The corner is not.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
Going to carry him because it's two because he's a
flat defender. So right now, Jordan Love knows that and
he's getting ready to deliver the ball. Really, the only
one who can play. This is the safety to that side.
But because it's four verticals and Tuckerkraft is running the
vertical from inside, the safety can't fly over the top.
(23:18):
I want you to understand, people, understand how difficult to
throw this is. That's from the far Hash to the outside,
Boyd to the other side of the field. Because Love
is such an easy throw over the football, as you
can see here, he makes it look easy like anybody
could make this throw.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Colin, this is a really difficult throw.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Greg Cosel forty five years NFL films as always absolute money. Greg,
appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Thanks, Colin, appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (23:47):

Something's going on with the Houston Texans Colin I know
they're five and two ASoP the AFC South, but the
kind of on the struggle bus and it was evident
last week against the Packers.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
The biggest issue has been past protection. CJ. Stroud had
a career.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
Low eighty six passing yards last week, got sacked four times.
Demico Ryans knows they need to protect their franchise QB.
Speaker 7 (24:44):
For me, everything is on the table when it comes
to it has to get fixed. I know how we're
coach when we're asking the asking to be done and
it's just not sawing up on the tape. So it's
and it's not just one person, it's the entire thing.
So it's just the entire from the top to the bottom.
We have to get it cleaned up.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
And obviously the numbers are brutal.
Speaker 4 (25:07):
C J.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Stroud is the third most pressured quarterback in the NFL.
Has been sacked twenty times. He's pressured forty six times
on third down and sacked ten times.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
They can't protect him.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Laramie Tunzel has been a turnstile there on the left
side when he's played well.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Nothing nothing slows the growth of a quarterback than when
he's on his back and we've seen this is it
and CJ moves okay, but he's not a natural fluid runner.
That's not what he is. His comp coming out of
the draft with Jared gob with better movement, so he's
not his escapability. He moves well in the pocket, but
that's not what he is. He is a pocket guy.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
And I don't know.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
We talked about potentially a sophomore slump. We haven't seen
a slump from him. And they are five and two
front but no Nicocollins, plus a shaky offensive line.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
Plus Joe Mixon's been hit at Joe Smiths availability. So
I just think I think he I mean the fact
and they've dealt with all these offensive issues tells you
how good he is.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
Well.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
So they were favored by six and a half against
the Colts at the outset.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Oh, I'd like love the Colts.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
Well that's down to five though.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Yeah, I'm gonna take They're getting healthier, Jonathan Taylor expected back.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Yeah, I like the Colts in that spot.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
I was sure the Texans were a lock in that division.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
No, in fact, I was My bet was the dysfunction
in the rest of the division with Tennessee and Jacksonville,
and we just didn't know. I didn't love Houston, but
I thought they had the most stability, continuity and dependability
in a wonky division. I mean we both kind of.
I mean, obviously Jacksonville's gone sideways. Neither one of us,
like Tennessee in Indianapolis, were like, well, Anthony Richardson remained
(26:44):
healthy and after the first month, You're like, I'm not sure.
Speaker 5 (26:47):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
This Jacksonville team's interesting if they can somehow beat the
Packers and the Texans loose to the Colts. Jacksonville's only
two games back in the division, and the Colts are
kind of live of Anthony Richardson could never figure things out.
Interesting weekend for the for the Texans for sure. Next
up Colin is the Kansas City Chiefs, the last unbeaten
team in the.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
NFL, and they'll probably keep it that way against Raiders.
Speaker 3 (27:10):
Right nine and a half point favorites against Vegas this weekend.
Antonio Pierce was asked about where Patrick Mahomes stacks up
in the all time quarterback ranks, and here's what he
has to say.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Speaking of Mahomes and read, you know, where does Patrick
Mahomes stack up against the great quarterbacks you played as
a player, like Brady and Manning.
Speaker 8 (27:30):
Three, you know, I mean, I'm sure by the end
of it you'll probably move up, but that you telling
me you made obviously our Hall of Famers one is
the greatest of all time game. Playing against him, it's
the same you know, countless sleepless nights that you had
as a player, and it's it's tough because he's a
tremendous talent, very competitive, and to be honest, even with
what's going on in the season with interception on that,
(27:51):
he's still playing his best poem.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Maybe saying a little too much there, Patrick Mahomes, even
with the interceptions is And of course obviously in the
offseason you had this Kermit the Frog moment. A rookie,
poor rookie doing this. At the time, he probably thought
it was hilarious. I'm sure Andy Reid's gonna be showing
that to the locker room this week. Chiefs Raiders. Remember Raiders,
last team to beat the Chiefs Christmas Day?
Speaker 5 (28:18):
That cost me a lot of money.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Antonio Pierce's team last week, they don't have any offense,
but they kept that game with the Rams competitive and
they got nothing offensively. Antonio Pierce's teams, you know, you
can roll your eyes. But remember the first year with
Detroit when they had Dan Campbell and we just said, well,
they don't win a lot of games, but they play hard.
The Raiders play their butt off and they got nothing
to work with offensively. If they get the quarterback, right,
(28:40):
watch out.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
So Kansas City coming off the huge emotional game against
San Francisco, I'm looking to see who they have. It's
Tampa Bay, not a big deal. It's just tough for
me to make a case for the Raiders here, Colin.
If Patrick Mahomes wants revenge and to exact it, and
Andy Reid says, you know what, let's embarrass these guys.
Let's get these Gardner minshew. Come on, what means you're
(29:02):
going to go do against this defense? Colan, he's after
the league leading picks.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
The Chiefs defense. They made brock Purty look pedestrial.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
Well, the reason the lines at minus nine and a half,
I mean that's a gigantic NFL line was ten though, Well,
I mean I just I always tell you the biggest
spread of the board, I just get rid of it.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
I don't bet.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
When's the last time I bet the biggest friend.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Of the mans Titans is the biggest.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
I'm not going to bet it. I just stay away from.
I don't like giving a pro team nine eleven points.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
The Titans are a pro team, you sure, just kidd?
Final story call on to the NBA.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
The Clippers opened their new arena last night whoo and
lost a heartbreaker of the Suns. It was quite a
scene there at that what are they call you, the
into it Dome. Oh, they've got the wall. Look at
that wall. They just packed fans back there, almost like
a college atmosphere.
Speaker 5 (29:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
The features a fifty one row section, including the first thirteen,
the standing room only, and that you have to be
a fan of the Clippers to sit there. The Suns
felt the presence of the wall. Here's d Book and
Kevin Durant talking about it.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Cool.
Speaker 8 (30:03):
Yeah, I missed the free throw man, that's true, So
I think k miss.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Too on their teams might work. Spend two billions.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Excited.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
They were just supposed to get that stop and then
I raised up a shot that I made it and
was silent in there. That's one of the best of
it as especially made in the game.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Yeah, paper Clips were in control of that game in
the fourth and all of a sudden.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Phoenix went an eleven nothing run Kevin.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
Looking like I thought it.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Look, you know what I liked about that arena. It
doesn't look like any other arena. It's it has Camden
Yards in Baltimore came out. Now that's been copied, but
when it came out, you're like, man, that looks totally different.
We don't talk a lot of arenas, but look at this.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
Look at Ballmer didn't let there.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
It looks cool.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
So I mean buddies who have been there and they said,
you don't have to like break out a wallet, credit card, nothing,
You just go up and they know who you are,
where you're sitting, and they it's just automatic eye. The
technology apparently is incredible.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Look at that. That is cool. Now if we can
just get Kawhi to play, that's not happening.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
James Harden twenty nine to twelve.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
He was cooking. He's pretty good. It's pretty cool, yeah,
jemgle the news.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by The
herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
All Right, the show is our big bets coming up.
We were winning week last week, another winning week last week,
I got I'm Cooking this week three and Oero on
the docket this week, Buddy.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Tomorrow night on Fox, the stage is set for an
iconic showdown. Aaron Judge leads the Yankees against show Hey
Otani and the Dodgers in a historic World Series clash.
Game one begins at seven pm Eastern on Fox.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
All Right, big bets. Jay McK and I were both
two and one last week. Are you are you ready
to roll on this?
Speaker 6 (32:03):
You're right?
Speaker 1 (32:03):
I am all right? Here we go are big bets.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
It's time for big bets. Colin and j Matt make
their favorite Big Ten bets of the week.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
Okay, I know you think I'm crazy. USC comes home Rutgers.
They keep losing close. I think they're going to cover
the thirteen point spread. Big Ten teams traveling multiple time
zones for conference matchups are five and eleven. This season.
USC defense third down defense is top three in the country. Rutgers.
(32:42):
I'm going to take the frustrated team who keeps losing close. Yes,
I don't like the Maryland loss, but Penn State LSU
they look like two touchdowns better. They'll take out their
frustration on Rutgers and cover the spread.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Dang it, I'm with you, Trojans zer Roll. Since that
rut win over Washington, they've lost four straight.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
They're cretering and Washington basically unraveled in that game and
gave them touchdown.
Speaker 5 (33:06):
That certainly happened.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
And again, I don't want to act like I'm defending
USC during this losing streak, but like every loss they
have is a close one. Three losses by a combined
eleven points. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just late
game lack of execution.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
You can figure that out. Won't need it against Rutgers.
USC rules.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Okay, I'm gonna take the over. Nebraska's at Ohio State.
I'm gonna take the over forty eight and a half.
Nebraska got whacked last week. They'll come back and play better.
Dylan Royola the quarterback. He has the most passing yards
in the FBS of any true freshman. Ohio State's an
offensive machine. Let's just be honest about this. Offensively, they
got like nine NFL players all of their wins have
(33:44):
come by twenty eight plus points. They're averaging forty three
a game this season. I like Will Howard. I think
they're receiving cors the best in the country. I think
it'll be a fun game for about a half, but
I think it blows past the over at forty eight
and a half.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
Yeah, I'm actually opposite you on this game.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Last week I picked Nebraska and they got throttled like
fifty six to seven. But I'm on the under in Nebraska.
Ohio State for one reason, Colin. We mentioned it all
the time.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
The spot Ohio State Penn State Happy Valley is.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Coming up, and you know that's the focus of Ohio State,
not a team that just got creamed by forty some
odd points.
Speaker 5 (34:19):
So I can see Ohio.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
State kind of sleepwalking through like a twenty three to
seventeen type game and under forty eight and a half.
Speaker 5 (34:25):
By the way, this open forty nine and a half.
Speaker 3 (34:27):
Forty, it's now down to forty eight and a half,
and I'm seeing some forty eighth pop up, So money
coming in on the under.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
I'm gonna take the over fifty four and a half
points in Illinois at Oregon, so Illinois is averaging thirty
a game. Okay, Oregon really didn't play very well last week.
We knew this. They beat Ohio State, they sleep walk
through Perdue and don't play well. They're gonna rev the
engine back up Oregon again thirty five nothing win over Perdue,
(34:56):
but they didn't play well. And I'll say this Luke Kaltemyer,
quarterback for Illinois, seventeen total touchdowns, one pick this season.
Illinois tends to play very well against better teams. I
don't think they'll win here, but they'll force Oregon to
show some of their playbook. They'll make Oregon compete, and
(35:17):
I think in this spot I'll take the over here.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
We are opposite on two. I'm under on this one.
Colin again. Primary reason. Who does Oregon have coming up
next on the road in the big house in ann Arbor?
Speaker 4 (35:29):
Huge?
Speaker 3 (35:30):
I know Michigan's on rank right now. That's still a
big game Oregon Michigan. Like preseason, you circle some games
that'll be a game where Oregon travels too. I don't
think the focus is here on Illinois, and this Illinois
team is pretty strong defensively.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
I like them.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
I think this is kind of nip and tuck deep
into the third quarter early. Yeah, and I think it'll
stay under the total of fifty four and a half.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
How about that. We both love the Trojans. Yet ahead,
your ear beating me this season, dude, I.
Speaker 3 (35:57):
Will say I've got five straight winning weeks in this now.
The first two weeks I fell on my face.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
It was ugly.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Yeah, I wasn't seeing the ball. Well now I am,
and your boys get a little hot. We'll see, We'll
see who's out this weekend.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
I'm watching a lot of college football. We talk NFL.
So tonight is the Rams and the Vikings. I think
I think the Vikings defense, which got pushed around a
little bit, will resurface tonight. I like the under for
the Rams here at twenty three and a half. I
think it's a very low scoring game. I think it
feels like twenty four to twenty Vikings win this game.
(36:35):
Let's go to the week eight schedule in the NFL.
So this is a very good Thursday night game. I
ask you every week when we get to Thursday and Friday, Okay,
you've got to get me the big upset. So I'm
looking at Seattle hosting Buffalo. I think that's a really
interesting spot.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
I can't believe you brought this game up.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Okay, so do you remember when I had to shave
my head the Seattle Seahawks thing. So a lot of
Seahawks fans started to follow me, and I started to
talk to some of them. One of them pointed out
something genius to me that I didn't think of. So
Seattle new head coaches McDonald? Where was he last year?
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Baltimore?
Speaker 5 (37:09):
Right, how did Baltimore do against Buffalo?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
This season?
Speaker 3 (37:12):
They throttled Josh Allen? Remember it was like thirty five
ten ors, like blowout city. Josh Allen could do nothing
offensively against the Baltimore defense. Do you think McDonald's talking
to his old guys in Baltimore? Hey, what did you
guys do? Was it the single high safety? I believe
they're getting healthier. It sounds like Woland is tracking to
play a great cornerback. I think they will cook up
a scheme defensively to really rattle Allen. And I don't
(37:35):
know if Amari Cooper's ready to be like a contributing factor.
Speaker 5 (37:37):
I think I'm with you on Seattle, Colin.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Yeah, I if you really look at Seattle's season is
they went to Detroit, had thirty eight first downs, They
had none of their top four defensive linemen. So when
Seattle's gotten healthy, I always go back to the check
the box belief. So we liked their coach, we like
(38:02):
their run game, we like their defensive front, we like
their weapons. They have a shutdown corner. You know, Gino
is a multiple Pro bowler. He's more than capable. They
Seattle checks a lot of boxes to be giving them
ever a field goal or more at home. I think,
and I said last year, I thought the Seahawk should
(38:22):
have drafted a quarterback. They didn't. And because I thought
last year's draft class, I don't think you're going to
see anything like that for another three or four years.
And when you see a quarterback draft class with potentially
we already know two three guys can play, two really
can play. And I think JJ McCarthy look great in
the preseason. I think Seattle made a mistake last year,
(38:44):
and John Schneider's a good GM. I thought they should
have moved up taken a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (38:51):
There is some concern DK Metcalf. Obviously, the injury.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
Cart it off. They're a pretty deep at receiver.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
He's tough, I mean, and also Noah offense could look
for him to be a big factor against the Buffalo
linebackers who have struggled.
Speaker 5 (39:01):
It's the Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
Secondary that's kind of scary against you know Smith, but
we'll see Kenneth Walker.
Speaker 5 (39:06):
I think that's a great game. Probably is that the
game of the week? Colin second best game. I don't know, Niners.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Dallas has the name and the star wattage, but I'm
fascinated by Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
See do you anybody It's amazing the wise guys like
Dallas at San Francisco.
Speaker 4 (39:22):
I like San.
Speaker 5 (39:22):
Francisco's about the injuries. You know that it's got to
be well.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Dallas is not one hundred percent. I think Dallas is
cut off the BYE. I think that helps Andy Reid, what.
Speaker 5 (39:32):
About Michael Parsons?
Speaker 1 (39:33):
You mean, I think buys don't work for everybody. Andy Reid,
McVeigh are unbelievable. Is Nick Sariani off of Bye? Special?
I mean, I just special?
Speaker 5 (39:45):
Ever?
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Yeah, I mean I just I don't think I think
certain offensive coaches are great off of Bye. This Dallas offense,
there's nothing to it. I mean, they're just it's ceedee
lamb and cross your fingers. We go.
Speaker 5 (39:58):
DW Dell, come on, respect that man.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Yeah, I stand on business. I our three. Drew Brees next,
