Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
One of our guys, Dan Woiki, covers the Lakers went
to every single game this year and by the way,
these days in the media that doesn't know what's happened,
you got television broadcasters not even going to the same game.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
AnyWho. That's a different topic.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Okay, Dan, you got a lot of stuff to talk about,
and let's start with the it's a little bit of
the elephant in the room, the JJ Reddick stuff. So
I was saying I had heard Bamani Jones and Nick
Wright brought this up. I thought it was a fascinating take.
Is that a lot of people who are anxious they
bring it on themselves. It's not external forces. JJ got
(00:57):
very tight in his biggest game as a college player.
As an NBA player, very good player. I think he
was the eleventh pick of Orlando out of the draft,
but he was a different player in the playoffs, he
not a lot of big shots, was less of a player.
And then you watch them with the Lakers and he
runs tight and he gets snippy, and I thought to
him and they theorize is like, this is not just
(01:20):
a comfortable college basketball job. It's eighty two games, it's NBA,
it's the Lakers, it's a big market media and let's
just talk about JJ Reddick's personality. Is it a little
bit of a concern?
Speaker 4 (01:36):
I think maybe a little bit. It is, though kind
of one of those things Colin, where like if you're
at a job interview and somebody asks you, like, what's
your biggest weakness, and it's like I care too much.
It's like you're also it's also kind of flexing how
much you care, right, And I think there are certainly
worse things that you can say about somebody other than
they're too intense, they care too much, they're too passionate
(01:58):
about what they're doing, they put too much into it.
And I do think with JJ, there is an element
of this, right, like this is and it's funny because
this was the type that the Lakers were sort of
chasing the other name right. The other person who got
off of the job. One other person got off of
the job is Dan Earley. And if we talk about
being wound tight and stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Like that, we're clearly looking for that.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
For that level of intensity, right, that level of passion.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
In the NBA, there's always been this theory you're either
a scheme guy or you're like Joe Torrey and baseball
now Steve Kurr is both.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Spolster was both, or you're a good in the room guy.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Now now, young coaches tend to be really good with
the players.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
JJ had a really good year with players.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
That's right. Is he a good scheme guy?
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I think so. I mean I think like it is.
You know, look, he made a really showy decision, right,
and their staff made a really showy decision to play
the same five players for twenty four straight minutes and
then they ran out of gas at the end of
the fourth. He defended that decision. I disagree with the
defense of the decision. Like tired players do miss layups,
(03:06):
tired players do turn the ball over. But they were
tired in game one when they played seven guys, they
were tired. In Game two, they were tired. Colin because
they had to play small so much. That's why they
were tired. Yeah, right, Like, and Minnesota's really really big,
and they're really dynamic, and they're really athletic, and it
was a horrible matchup, and that's why the Lakers were tired.
(03:27):
I do think that the best thing I can say
about JJ redicks season, having seen it, as you mentioned,
you know what ninety three games. I've known him a
very long time, is that, uh, jj Reddick's coaching philosophy
on day one was different than his coaching philosophy on
game five. Yeah, the west of the first round plaffs.
(03:48):
And that doesn't mean he was soft on convictions. I
think you could anybody who's seen JJ redk talk knows
that he's not soft on convictions. I think his primary
conviction was I need to coach to my team, and
I need to coach to the strengths and the weaknesses
of my team. And that's that is my philosophy. So
when he had Anthony Davis and Lebron James, that meant
shooting twenty three is a game. Cool, they shot twenty
(04:10):
three is a game that Man, when they had Lukadacic
they shot fifty. It is there's a flexibility there and
that would give me. I think the most confidence moving
forwards is that he's going to do. To Boloni and
Nick's point, he is very hard on himself. His pressure
does come from within, Like he wants to win as
badly as anybody I've ever met, and he hasn't won
(04:31):
it spent a long time since he's won a championship. Yeah,
you know he's gonna do He's gonna do everything to
put himself in a position to be better. And I
think that's good. Now when the moment comes again, you know,
is he gonna I mean that's part of that's part
of you know, who he is.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Part of.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
It reminded me of Brandon Staley with the Chargers. I'm like,
when you start attacking the pretty nice LA media, this
isn't Philly, this isn't Boston, this isn't you know, Chicago.
LA media is pretty fair.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Yeah, And I mean, look, we did you know, I'd say,
you know, as I'm counting it out in my head,
if it's you know, six Preseson games, eighty two regular
season games, five playoff games, ninety three, Yeah, we talked
to him pre and post ninety three times there were
a couple of clips that that went viral. You know,
I think again, I prefer in these situations a coach
(05:23):
who will listen to what we ask, who will answer
the questions that we ask. He told me at times
this year he thought I was grasping at things. Fine,
let's have it.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
We'll have a.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Conversation about it. And I think like that part of it,
to me more signaled. I think the more revealing J. J.
Ridick press conference moment for me was before game one
of the first round the playoffs went again. He had
had a week to think about a game, and he
looked it and he acted it in a.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Way where he was so scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, you know, they were just too they were just
they wanted it too much or as a coaching staff,
and like that wasn't the right It wasn't the right energy.
Minnesota seemed much more relaxed, much more loose, seemed like
they had more fun. Yeah, and I think that showed
off in the court.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Okay, I've been saying this for years. I understand when
America likes the underdog.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
I don't. I'm a Yankee Dodger Ohio State.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Like Lebron, I'm not. This is the Lebron. This is
the Lebron fandom list.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Yeah, I'm not an underdog fan. You can draft TCU players,
all draft Texas guys. I don't care, and so brock Purty.
Everybody roots for him. It gets rainy and he can't
hold the ball. If Austin Reeves is undrafted, there's a
reason I like Austin Reeves.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
They don't have a big If he's a.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Three, you're not winning the championship. If he's a four,
I don't think he's nearly as good as Derek White.
But if he is a four, you could maybe get
to the finals. Because I'm looking at Michael Porter's of
four with Westbrook playing well, he is he a five
for Denver their fifth best player?
Speaker 3 (06:58):
What is this?
Speaker 2 (06:59):
What is this?
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Are they going to move Austin Reeves and how do
they view him in the house.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
I don't think they're going to move him. I don't
think there is a.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
He was awful against the t Wolves.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
He was He had a bad series and.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
By the way, they kept throwing athletes at him.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
A bad series but still cold. I mean like, I
mean bad series to the eye test, more so than
the numbers.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Certainly couldn't get to the long you know.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
I think in some of that like this sounds like
an excuse, and it is what it is. If you're
on the court, you're on the court. He was playing
through a pretty severe foot injury, pretty severe toe injury
in games four and five. I think the thing with
Austin there's a couple of things. One, this is a
guy who every time they've a challenge has been kind
of issued to him, He's answered to it. He's answered
(07:45):
it right from being undrafted to being Can he be
a rotation player to being a starter? Can he be?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Can you play with Luke?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Can he play with Luca? Can he be you know,
at times the second best offensive player on this team?
You know, I think at the contract he's at, certainly
the relationship he has within the organization with with people
in the organization, the relationship he has with his in
the locker room as sort of like the bridge between
(08:11):
the lebron tier of the locker room and say, like
the bottom tier of the locker room. Like he's the
glue of all of this, right, he is the guy
that everybody can talk to and he's a problem solver,
and they believe in him. They really believe in him.
They think this was a bad series.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
They want an all star back he's I.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Mean, yeah, like this is like tippy top. I mean
this is a They view him as an all star
level player who makes fifteen million dollars so at the
early stages of his prime.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Now, because I don't think you can run this team back,
Lebron is hit and miss.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
They need a center, There's no doubt about it. And
there's no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
J Reddick doesn't play Jackson Hayes. He's telling the front office,
get me a legitimitch.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
So if if there was a center, Colin that was
like a big time needle mover, not just like he's
a good center because we need That's not a big thurd,
not a big I mean they're good players, and they're
players that would fit what the Lakers are doing. They're
not players that the Lakers would part.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
With Austin Reeves for neck Claxon.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
They would, No, I don't believe.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
So, okay, here's another one.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
There are certain things where people don't change like you
can get. You can get like, for instance, you could
tell somebody, hey, if you don't stop smoking, you're going
to die yep, and they will stop smoking, or you
need to lose weight.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
You're unhealthy and in your appearance do.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
You have my medical files? Back then it seems like
you mind. This is just somebody violate Hippa. Okay.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon eastern non a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
There are other things that people are what they are,
And I'll give you an example.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Work ethic.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
You either grind or you don't.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
If you're if you're awaken bake guy, or you've always
been party guy on campus.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
I love you, but that's who you are.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Sure it gets to full all the guys that were
party guys in that kind of they are what they are.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
So defense, James Harden has never cared about it, Carmelo
Anthony never cared about it, and Luca doesn't care about it.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Now.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Jokic has made an improvement. He's never going to be
great defensive.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
I have two there's another name in mind.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
So Ray Knock is if you're having these meetings with
Luca and you're like, listen, we need you to be
blank defensively this is what he is. Now he can
be a better version of this. But how many years
do I have to see teams attack him before we
just acknowledge he's been playing basketball over eighteen years.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
This is what he is defensively.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Yeah, I think the frustrating part with Luka Doncris' defense
is that in flashes like you see, you know this
six foot seven guy uses body well, position it well,
move his feet, get into get into the spots that
he's use his brain right to be an active defender.
You see it at times. You saw it for lightning
(11:02):
bolt flashes. In this series when the stakes were highest,
it wasn't consistent enough. The Lakers know it. Luca do
Not just knows that. The Dallas Mavericks knew it. Yugo
Harrison knew it.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
The league knows.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
The league knows. This is why you tacked it. This
is the big One of the biggest differences between last
year's playoffs versus this year's playoffs when it came to
Minnesota was that they went at Luca Dotch harder this year.
They put him in that position, and quite frankly, the
way you need to do it is that you need
to build the right kind of team defense around him
and you can get away with it.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Dallas gave you the roadmap.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
So that's yeah, Kyrie and Luca were together, they started
tanking to get and then the next year in the
trade deadline, they.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Went and got big.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
You have.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
So the Lakers liability is the opposite of what works
with Luca.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
You need rim protect, Yeah, Colin, and I think you
know that that sort of you know, Hollywood summit or
meeting or whatever you want to call it between Luca
and Rob Lincoln, J. J. Redick, it was not all
this stuff, right, It was the trade happens, right, and
it is about getting Luca Dodgic as comfortable as possible,
as fast as possible, after having like, you know, his
entire professional like world just like kind of ripped down,
(12:10):
right like, because that's what this was. He didn't expect
to be traded. He was going to finish his career
in Dallas. Uh, and then all of a sudden, he's
not right. He's somewhere totally new, really playing for the
third team in his life as a as a since
he was fifteen. This is the third different team he's
ever played for. So I think the season was about
getting him as a justin as comfortables possible and trying
(12:31):
to maximize a roster that, quite frankly, wasn't built for him, right,
and he's the kind of player who when given a
roster built for him. We saw what happened last year
in Dallas, and I think, you know my understanding is
what that meeting was was not just JJ and Robb
telling him put down the bread basket, like you know,
we're gonna go keto this summer. That's not what it was.
(12:52):
It was what let's talk basketball now. Now we can
get into the part of this. You're here, we think
you're going to be here a long time. How do
we make you the best version of yourself? What can
we do to maximize your skills? What kind of players
do you want to see around you? Let's get to work.
I'm building this thing out and we've talked about it.
(13:13):
You know, they need more length and athleticism on the wings,
more two way players, they need more size. Easier said
than done. Most teams want those things. They don't have
a ton of assets to get it. But you know,
I think there is a belief, at least you know,
from the Dodgers camp in sort of what a Lebron Luca,
Austin Reeves Core can do, I think, and then building
(13:34):
around it.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
I think you got to move off Austin if you
want to get a legit big. That's an uncomfortable conversation.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
It is.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
I just think that like, by the way, Okay.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Sees younger and better, Cleveland's younger and better, Indies younger,
and I think better, Boston's better. At some point you
just got to say, guys, we won the Luca trade
by a mile, we could lose a little.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
I just think that's the question to me is just
still again is like where the big is and who
the big is? And I think like Gafford for Austin,
I think they can get gaffered without Austin Reeves, right.
I mean that's honestly they have they have a first
round pick. You know, they have a a player in
Dalton connect that that has some value. I think that
(14:14):
can kind of get you there on the starting point.
I think, you know, you have your swaps, you can
be more creative. You have like you have in a
roster building thing, right, And it's it'll be interesting how
different the team is to you know, we don't know
what Lebron's long term future is I mean, we do
it's retirement eventually. But but you know, when you have
(14:35):
a player you can count on around fifteen million dollars
and you've got your your your megamax guy, you have
more flexibility that it might appear. And I think I'm
curious to see what the Lakers do with their expiring money.
They have some expiring contracts, they have a first round
pick they can trade, they can get a little creative
in that. And I think, you know, they felt one
(14:55):
of the other things. And it's funny how much five
games and four losses can change things. But you know,
going into this playoffs, Colin like, I've been around teams
that have said they think they can win championships and
we all know they couldn't. This Lakers team had that belief,
like they really had that belief, but like an authentic belief,
like a truly authentic belief.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
You I think you can authentically believe a lot, that
doesn't make it true.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
Sure, And I think I think when they will approach
this offseason, they need to do so with This is
the hard part about team building in the NBA. You
don't want to be reacting you don't want to be
too reactionary. Do it just happened. But you have to
look at yourself in the mirror and know where you're soft.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Yeah, and they don't. Rams are really good at looking
at themselves and asking hard questions. I'm not sure the
Lakers are.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
I mean, the Lakers lost the first round series three
years ago, three years ago, three or four years ago
to the Phoenix Suns. Right, yes, right, and decided that
the best course of action was to trade for us Westbrook.
That was an overreaction, it was an overcome. It was
an overreaction to what had happened this season before. They
thought they needed more punch, they needed another ball handler,
they needed all these things. Yeah, they needed to make
(15:57):
a big change, that big change, step back the organization
multiple years and and they they were given a way out.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
But you're what you're largely saying is and this is true.
The Lakers have always been at their best taking huge swings.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
They get they get the big stuff, right, Yeah, if
you're not, they got to get the small stuff. We'll
want to.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Move Austin Reeves. You're not taking a swing.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Oklahoma City will be marketably like Cleveland, They'll be better
next year, Like you're not going backwards.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
Sure, and san Antonio is gonna san Antonio is coming.
Everybody knows that's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Thinking about we're gonna keep Austin, but we're gonna find Okay,
you need you.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
Have to believe in Luca. You have to believe in
like you have to believe in Luca Lukadatcha, and you
have to believe in Austin Reeves.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Lebron's not getting younger. Sure, Luca will never be a
great defender. And Austin is undrafted. Good, but he's undrafted.
He was physically worked.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Yeah, I think this is And when J. J. Reddick
says things like we need to be in championship condition, well,
like he's not just talking about lukadatch It's like it
is a more of a roster wide thing where they
need to be. They need to be in a better position.
Should should they have to play that style again for
the amount of time that they did. Now, perfect world,
(17:08):
you don't have to play that style. You get the
big you get the right guy in there. I think
you keep your card together. Bakers are becoming and that's
the plan, and that's the plan. The Lakers are becoming
the Clippers. They're not gonna like that.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Hey, you know what next year when Kawhi comes back, No, no,
Kawhi will play forty games. Well, James Harden will be
James Harden. The Clippers now are trying to talk them.
People do this all the time.
Speaker 4 (17:30):
But like Luka, Doncisklin doesn't lose in the first round
the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
This is the anobum that's great.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
This is the anoum.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Austin's undrafted and JJ Reddick's got a ways to go
to be an elite coach.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Those things do not change.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Yeah, I agree with you, and I think that I.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Think you're higher on the Lakers than I am.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
I think what I think.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
I think.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
I believe in a in a Dancic like I've seen
enough of, like what Luca at the core of a
team can be when it's not a great.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Fit with a great center ROTI but when it.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
Was not a great fit went to the Western Conference
finals like it with a really good center with a
really good.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
A better coach absolutely and a great center rotation. Lakers
don't have one center.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
They dross not one.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
I know, And that's and that is the task. This offseason.
That is top line number one.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
You can't get there without moving on.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
I think you can. You mentioned Nick, if Nick Claxon
to you answers that question just so you can get
Nick Clackson without trading off Reeves like you can't. You
have expiring money. You have a first round pick that'll
get you Nick Clackson like they were. I mean, if
Mark Williams, if they felt better about what they saw
with Mark Williams knees and ankles and stuff like that,
they get Mark Williams. With Dalton connecting a first round
pick and the problems solved, they can get there. I
(18:38):
think that it is going to be a very focused thing.
The caution I would say is again is that on
paper they can. The Lakers win the off season all
the time. On paper doesn't mean anything. You might wake
up on July second and Clin Capella's on your team
and for Clopez is on your team, and you're like,
we've got centers. They might not be the right fits
if you watch them. If you watched the playoffs, Colin,
(19:01):
this is the biggest thing for me when I look
around at the playoffs last night, and I was talking
yesterday to a scout about this. Look at a guy
like Isaiah Hartenstein right guarded Jokai's great last night, the
Clippers like chose John Wall instead of Isaiah Hartenstein. Isaiah
Hartenstein was on the Knicks and no longer on the Knicks.
Isaiah Hartenstein was on the rockets and no longer on
(19:22):
the rockets. You got to get role players at the
right time. He took the right situation. He wasn't dead.
You got to get him at the right time, in
the right situation. And that's where the best executives do
their best work. The getting Luca is the most important part.
What matters most is what you put around.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
It all right, thirty seconds, KD thirty seconds.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Where's the end up?
Speaker 4 (19:42):
I think it's Houston just seems like the most logical. Yeah,
San Antonio, if we want to get really wild.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
They got a lot of pecks. Well, I mean, Houston's
not getting both of them.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Like, I mean, like, if Jannis wants to win, that
it's a fun pathway to winning. If he wants to
go to a big market, it gets a little trickier.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Big markets don't matter anymore, I don't think. I mean,
I think it helps.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
Sh quality of life. It matters quality of life. People
at a certain point whey where they want to live.
But like I think, I think Giannas like Giannis is
fascinating because he has maximized his opportunity in Milwaukee. He's
enjoyed it there. He's been great for that community. There's
tons of like the ties are really strong there. We'll see.
I mean, Miami, you could build around him pretty easily there.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
They have to give me Tyler hero.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Milwaukee's own Wisconsin legend Tyler.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Here, Miami doesn't have enough to give it picks.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
I mean, like it's gonna have to be like I
mean the teams that have the stuff.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
I want shen Goon or we're not hanging the phone up.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Houston would do that in a second.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
For Shane Goon. I'm not getting them in. I want
shen Goon.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
You're starting with the men Thompson. That is where that
conversation is.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
They're not smoving him.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
I wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Well, maybe they don't get yais like that's where you
don't have to trade.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Never trade.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
You don't want to put yourself in the Nico position
where you don't end up with the players you want.
You gotta get well, he got the player one. It
was Anthony Avis. You have to get the young players
you want if you're going to trade you on.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Shen Goon, Jalen Green, three first round picks and Jabari Smith.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
Not enough, not enough, not enough, not for you, honest, Sorry,
we can offer more than that because I'm looking at
chat GBT the most draft capital next five years.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
Ok see Brooklyn, you I mean okay, see, okay, so
you can get there, that's it. Okay, So you can
get there fun and they can get there quickly.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
They could win next year. Anyway.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
We'll see. They got some big game work to do. Well, yeah,
that's we'll see. They got some big game works.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
One guy on this set thought Denver at a shot
in this series.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
That's right, the old gray haired guy, not.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
The former smoker with the weight problem. That's good.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I'm glad it wasn't Himiki of the La Times, we
probably get the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Herd weekdays and noon Eastern not a Empacific.
Speaker 6 (21:59):
Hey, Steve and I'm Rich David, and together we're Covino
and Rich on Fox Sports Radio. You could catch us
weekdays from five to seven pm Eastern two to four
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and of course the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Why should you listen to Covino and Rich.
Speaker 6 (22:13):
We talk about everything life, sports, relationships, what's going on
in the world. We have a lot of fun talking
about the stories behind the stories in the world of
sports and pop culture, stories that well other shows don't
seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact
that we've been friends for the last twenty years and
still work together, I mean that says something, right, So
check us out. We like to get you involved too,
(22:33):
take your phone calls, chop it up. As they say,
I'd say the most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio,
maybe the.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
Most interactive show on planetar.
Speaker 6 (22:41):
Be sure to check out Covino and Rich live on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app from five to
seven pm Eastern two to four Pacific, and if you
miss any of the live show, just search Covino and
Rich wherever you get your podcasts, and of course on
social media.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
That's Covino and Rich. Good argument.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
I think the Lakers have become the Clippers. How they
view themselves is not realistic, and all the good teams
in the NBA, like Houston and Okac just in the West,
those teams have so many first round picks, They're just
gonna get better and better. And San Antonio is just
gonna get better and better. And the Lakers and Clippers
are like, hey, we're not changing a thing with Austin Reeves.
(23:18):
You better san Antonio, Houston and Oka. See, this is
the worst they'll be for the next five years. And
you got old Lebron, you got Luca not in shape,
you got Kawhi that never plays, you got James Harden
who just doesn't deliver consistently in the playoffs, and they're
all old. So the West is gonna be dominated by
(23:40):
San Antonio Houston, and Houston's gonna go get k d
or Giannis and beat the doors off those LA teams
by next year.
Speaker 4 (23:49):
J Mack with a.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
News No, no.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
No, this is the Herd Live News fired up today.
Oh my goodness, let's see if we can do anything
here for you. Kenny Atkinson won the NBA's Coach of
the Year in his first year with the Cavs. They
won sixty four games and the number one seed in
the East. Colin He got fifty nine of the one
hundred first place votes. Atkinson said, I've changed. I wouldn't
have been ready for this job before. I need to
(24:14):
get fired. I needed those experiences needed to go through
all that number. He was fired specifically by Kyrie Irving
and Brooklyn bicker Staff of Detroit finished second, which was
a little surprising since they tripled their win total, and
then Ema Udoka of Houston finished third. Listen man, by
the way, I don't want you to go overboard yere
(24:35):
cats practice today. No Mobley, Garland or DeAndre Hunter. That
line is plummeting. If the Pacers go up two zero
in the series, I think it's over. And then what
do you do for Atkinson like he was great this year? Well,
but you get bounced in the second round.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Bro come on, well it's injuries.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
I mean, if you don't have Darius Garland and I
got Halliburton spinning and dealing in patience.
Speaker 7 (24:54):
That one time All star Darius Garland.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Arius Garland is their set up guy. Donovan Mitchell's done
a point. He shoots too much when he has the
ball too much. You have to set him up to succeed.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
If you don't have if you.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
Don't have Darius Garland Mobley, you're not beating in the
Indiana is a good team.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Sometimes you're missing a star. You gotta pivot on the fly.
Speaker 7 (25:13):
Atkinson did not do that. Boy one days I'm out.
You sure, and Jordan, you guys are fine.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
And Andy Reid didn't have a good left tackle.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
Andy, you gotta pivot sometimes that the other team has
better player six the problem.
Speaker 7 (25:25):
You're a championship coach, kicks it. Come on, Kenny Atkinson,
You Kenny.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
At consider very win tonight. Well he didn't have to win.
He's not gonna get fired.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
You go down O two?
Speaker 2 (25:36):
A series over what it is.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
If you go down oh two. Let's let's play the
game first again.
Speaker 2 (25:42):
The line was ten.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
You're sounding like you're sounding like perk.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
Oh no, don't do that to me.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Nick Nicks. Win a game and you swear to god
he's the whole Leeds.
Speaker 7 (25:52):
Oh god, please don't compare me to that guy. Oh
next up, let's move. What how about this college?
Speaker 5 (25:58):
Okay, So Dylan Gabriel was doing some pre draft social
media stuff and somehow predicted exactly where he was going
to be drafted.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Are you here we go.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
That bird back there? What are they saying?
Speaker 2 (26:15):
Cleveland Browns ninety four that's what he said.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
Okay, Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
With the ninety fourth pick in the twenty twenty five
NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Dylan.
Speaker 6 (26:30):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Pretty cool.
Speaker 7 (26:33):
Now, listen, my brother and his wife are big.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
They call birds. They do that.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
It's crazy to see. I don't know anybody who's in
the birds. The fact that Dylan Gabriel could predict this
talking to the birds, and the way the Browns were
pumped to get him, all I know people are excited
for Shdor Sanders.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
No. I's very clear.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
I make eye contact with our dog Wrigley, and I
can talk to my dog without talking to him. I
look at him a certain way. He knows he's in trouble.
I can communicate with our.
Speaker 7 (27:05):
Dogs and he'll just go sit in the corner or whatever.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
And I can't. I have to talk with am.
Speaker 5 (27:09):
I can't just colin This video there is it's just
a quick clip. But how excited Stefanski is that they're
getting Gabriel. I'm just telling you, Chador has a big
mountain to climb here.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
They love Dylan Gabriel. I don't know why, but they do.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
So your your your brother talks to birds.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
He does.
Speaker 7 (27:28):
Yeah, he's listening now to.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
So what do you say, talk to bird?
Speaker 5 (27:31):
You do this bird call with this app and then
the birds talk and then they'll like come in your
orbit because they think it's another bird.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
So do they when they're there? Do they get stuff
out of it? I mean the decisions based.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
Can call like a bird and then he comes over.
It's kind of neat. It's not for me, but it's neat.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
No, I'm not not not that impressed. It's not that
I'm not impressed. I just I talk to my dogs.
Speaker 7 (27:55):
Yeah, I like dogs as yay.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Final story, Colin is your guy.
Speaker 5 (27:59):
Jim Harball drafted one of the top running backs in
the class, oh Marion Hampton, North Carolina thumper.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Man, I like this guy.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
Look at that speed.
Speaker 5 (28:06):
Plus he got the half shirt on, which is cool.
Flex Anyways, Hampton and Harball seem.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
Like a perfect hit.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Fit in the situation is way more important because that's
theel Like you can go anywhere, and if it's not
your feet, then you won't be able to produce what
you can do.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
We know they're going to run the ball, so I'm loving.
I'm excited.
Speaker 7 (28:24):
I mean, we got me and Iji We've got a
dominant duo backfields, so I'm decided to learn from him.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
I'm decided to get out there.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Got a good offensive line in a quarterer bent.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
I feel like we've been on release.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
Especially listen there. This is really going to be a
harball team. This is going to be It's a two
headed running game, great offensive tackles and a big, strong quarterback.
They're not going to be everybody's freaking out all the
receiving room. That's not That is not how pharmacist Jim
Harbaugh deals the pills. He is a run first, power offense,
(29:00):
troll of the clock. He likes his practices to be intense.
When he was with the Niners getting the Super Bowls,
he had Michael Crabtree. Michigan won a Natty with one
go to receiver. They threw to the tight end.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
But we saw how limited that offense was in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
That's because they didn't have the backs.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
I mean JK Dobbins was banged up.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
This is going to be a and by the way,
Joe All was a rookie at right tackle.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
This is going to be a much different looking offense.
Speaker 7 (29:25):
A you hour off over the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
Have them winning twelve games.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
So now when Sewn Payton texts you after the show, dude,
did you forget about us?
Speaker 3 (29:32):
I have you?
Speaker 2 (29:33):
I have them winning ten and the Chiefs nine ten
and the Chargers twelve. That's the best division in football.
And I think by a long he had that over
the North.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
Now that coaching is better than the NSC North.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Keep your own.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
Next Sam Darnold leaving Minnesota, Skull will be uh.
Speaker 5 (29:54):
Well, I'm all in on the Vikings this year with
JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Now you're on the same slash year or that was
the year before?
Speaker 7 (30:02):
That was my last story, Bud?
Speaker 3 (30:04):
Was that your last story?
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Skull?
Speaker 1 (30:08):
No?
Speaker 3 (30:08):
No, no?
Speaker 2 (30:08):
The Saints in bitcoin? No, you're not a bitcoin guy though.
Speaker 7 (30:11):
Oh actually I've gotten into it recently.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Oh boy, a little bit.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
Another thing we don't agree on.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Yo.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
Listen, things don't work out certain places. You got you
gotta go Bitcoin? That maybe the savior.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Jay Mack with the News, Well that's the news, and
thanks for stopping by the herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
You know ninety four year old Warren Buffett, you ever
asked his opinion on bitcoin?
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Not very high.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
I'm gonna go with that guy. He's pretty smart, Dan
Woike and I so he just you. I think the
Lakers are the Clippers. I think their self identity is struggling.
I think they think there's something they're not. This is
always one of those things where you hear these psychologists
talk about this all the time.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
You have to be more.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
People now in this world are more connected with people
that don't matter to them on their phone, then they
are connected to themselves. You have to be connected to you.
Don't worry about the phone. Put the phone down. If
it's good with you, the phone will be fine. If
it's not good with you, you'll spend all day on
a phone feeling bad about yourself. It's the same in
pro sports self scouting. You have to be able to
(31:19):
self scout. If you think you're gonna keep Austin Reeves
and get like a second tier center and going forward,
beat Houston, who's gonna get either kd or Yannis?
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Beat Okac?
Speaker 1 (31:30):
This is the worst Okac You're gonna have team for
the next five years. They're gonna get better and better
with all their draft picks. Houston's getting better and better.
Wemby's gonna get better and those teams have more picks
younger in their prime. Hey, we're not willing to move
Austin Reeves. Well, are you willing to do the playing
(31:50):
game for the next several years? I mean you got
to be able to self scout and beyond.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
With the three seed and you're talking playing with the disrespect.
It's often reason's fantastic all seed.
Speaker 7 (32:00):
He had a rough series going again.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
He was.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Banged up in this series, like this is not being disclosed.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
He was injured.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
Lebron got injured. He had to miss the met gallo
last night. He's on the shelf. Luca missed thirty games.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Sae Kwon Barkley was at the met gala.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
He was there.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
He looked very professional. Yeah, that's that's that's high fashion.
I'm surprised you weren't there. Oh god, that's There's no
place in America and no day in America.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
I would be more uncomfortable than the met Gala. Really,
I don't like dressing up, dude.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
This is it.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
This is as good as I get.
Speaker 7 (32:35):
Yeah, what was the last time you were tuxedo?
Speaker 4 (32:39):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Junior year of high school?
Speaker 7 (32:41):
Oh my, you didn't wear one for your wedding?
Speaker 2 (32:43):
No?
Speaker 7 (32:44):
What why didn't you get married on the beach?
Speaker 3 (32:47):
I got married near the beach.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
You know how it is if you're within a mile,
if you can ride a bicycle from where you're getting
married to the beach.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
No tux, no tox.
Speaker 5 (32:55):
Okay, I'm learning a lot about you. You got your
PhD in psychology. I'm assuming based on that riff just
now about phones and being okay with.
Speaker 1 (33:02):
Yourself, I'm just saying, if you don't have yourself, if
you don't know yourself, you're not good with yourself.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
You're on the phone all day. You're seeking stuff.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
You got you gotta. It's the same with NFL teams,
NBA teams. You gotta know you before you're scouting guys
in Dusseldorf.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
Who are you?
Speaker 4 (33:19):
What do you need?
Speaker 3 (33:20):
What?
Speaker 4 (33:20):
What are your.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
Limited you're not gonna move Austin Reeves, Well, then you're
gonna get.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Whacked by the Spurs in the first round. See them
Mar
