for listening to The Herd Podcast. Thirty nine years coaching

(00:22):
college or pro football, six with the Bears, five with
the Dolphins, last Dolphin coach to win a playoff game.
He's my buddy, Dave Wanstadt. He's joining us live from
Chicago right now. Well, I gotta imagine that town is unhappy.
I mean, it's not losing, it's the way they lost.
I don't even know. Is it a good I mean,

(00:45):
is it a job you'd even consider taking? Is it
that bad? What are the positives there?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well, the positive are that you're gonna have a full
house every week.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
And this is a football town. I mean even in.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Tough times, you know when the Bulls were having their heyday,
and obviously the Blackhawks and on and on. I mean,
it's a Bear's talent it always will be. And they
have a quarterback that's got some talent. So yes, it's
a it's a dark good job. But no, you're right,
the time has just turned upside down right now. All

(01:18):
that I do is radio and TV form. And I
was walking up the other morning at seven o'clock to
do a show. I didn't even had a couple of
coffee yet, and the guys stopped me on the street
and wanted to start cussing me on you and those
damn bears wants that.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
I said, Bucky, Relax, Relax. I mean he's got how'd
you like to work next to him all day?

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Wow?

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah. So here's my take. Would you go with a
young offensive coordinator like a Ben Johnson and just get
Caleb Bright? Would you go with a guy that's more
of a tough, physical culture builder like vrabel Is? There
is there a perfect choice?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well, I think here, and obviously I'm a defensive guy,
so people would say I'm gonna side with the defense.
But in this particular case, you know, and I was
at coach at the University of Pittsburgh when Mike Cammon
got hired at the Steelers, and he had Bruce Airings,
and he had Dick Lebox, and he had Ben Roethlisberger
who had won a Super Bowl. Mike can come in,

(02:17):
be the head coach over everything and play that role
with a young quarterback. You know there's nine there's what
five rookie starting this year. Yeah, five second year or
four second three or four second year quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
So my point is the offensive guy.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
You want somebody I think at the Bears, that's an
offensive minded coach.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
That can grow with Taylor. Now, when you look at
these offensive coaches, I.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Wouldn't look at a one year wonder offensive coordinator or
a six game wonder offensive coordinator. You look at these
guys that have some history to them calling two or
three years. Because let me tell you what happened to
me when I was at the Bears. My third year,
we go to the playoffs, win a playoff game here.
The next year, my offensive coordinator leaves me, Ron Turner,

(03:07):
he goes to University of Illinois.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
I get another offensive coordinator. I'm at the Dolphins.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Two years into it, playoffs, twelve wins, eleven wins, chen
Daily leaves.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Me, goes to Georgia Tech. I hire North.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Turner comes on two years with North, winning ten games
a year.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
North takes the Raiders jump.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
So, going on my fifth year at to Dolphins, I
was on my third offensive coordinator and they all say
this is the catch. They all say, oh no, no,
we'll make the terminology and we'll keep the system the
same for the quarterback, they don't. They all believe in
things that they've been successful. And that's what you get into.
That's why an offensive guy that has experienced I think

(03:47):
really would benefit the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
You know, it's intering interesting as we look at the
emergence of run games Baltimore, Detroit, the Rams with Kyron Williams.
You start looking at the NFL right now Saquon Barkley Eagles.
The run game is back, and do you have a

(04:12):
belief why. I mean, there was a two year period
nobody wanted to pay him. I'm looking around the league now, Washington,
Atlanta leads their division, all the teams now, Buffalo with
James Cook. The run game is back. Why in your opinion?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well, number one, I think that it helps the young
quarterbacks immensely. Yeah, if you got a young quarterback and
you can run the football, boy, does that helped him
as far as being in manageable third dons. That's the
opposite of what the Bears are doing. Bears are and
Chuck and I had a great conversation with Troy Aikman
the other and he was on my radio show, and

(04:49):
Troy was talking about how the Kysh Shanahan Tree, the mcvay's.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
The.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Guy at Minnesota, obviously McVeigh, all these guys that come
on that tree La floor, they all are under center
a lot of the time, and it's all timing steps.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
And get the ball out quick. Uh, and he said,
and Troy made the point.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
He says, that's where obviously your best play action passes come.
Who's gonna fall for a play action pass from the guy.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
In a shotgun? So I think that the guys.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
That are running it, and I look this morning, it's
funny you bring that up. Six of the top ten
running backs in the NFL right now are all the
top teams you mentioned. Obviously you know most of them
right there. So my point is, I think that it
helps the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance
that convert third dons and obviously you're gonna move the change,

(05:43):
you're gonna score points, and.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
It rests your defense, you know.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
I mean, these all these teams now all of a sudden,
they're getting better with defense as the year goes on.
Why is that because they're arrested. They're not playing as
many snaps as if they're throwing at every.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Don Philadelphia's coach Nick Siriani, I have moultiple instances hand
gesture of a Super Bowl arguing with a position coach.
You had feisty last week with Zach Ertz yelling at fans.
It's not the way you would have done it. I mean,
Philly's an emotional town. He's an emotional guy. So it's working.
But what do you make of it when you see

(06:17):
this stuff?

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yeah, that turns me off. I mean, I don't believe
in that stuff. I wouldn't do that stuff. But I
will say this, I think the last few weeks Nick's
kind of gotten a little bit quieter, and he's and
they're one of the few teams they're in the top
ten in offense and defense and two other things.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
It tells me that he's got control of his team.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
You know, they have the second fewest penalties in the
National Football League. They're plus six in turnover margin in
the NFL right now, So all the things that win
game for you sometimes that people don't want to talk about.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Boy, they are doing a very good job.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
And they went out and they hired Vic Fangio, you know,
and they got the top defense right now the NFL.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
So I think, you know, I had.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
A problem with some of the things that he did,
but I think overall, he's doing a very good job.
He's got good people, he's letting them more. Kellen Moore
is doing a great job with the offense. And uh,
that's that's the key to being the head coach.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Okay, So I gotta ask you, Packers are going to
Minnesota to play the Vikings. So you got JJ McCarthy.
And if you let Sam Donald go, you got a
rookie contract for five years. You can go buy any weakness.
Daniel Jones can be a backup, or you can keep Donald,
who's red hot. What do you if you ran the team,

(07:36):
you're the GM of this team, even if you're the coach,
what do you do with Donald? Now you can argue, hey,
everybody's going to succeed with Jordan Addison, and everybody's gonna
succeed with Justin Jefferson and the TJ. Hawkinson. Is it
the parts?

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Sam? What do you do with Donald in that situation.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Well, just just look at Chicago.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
I mean, look at our receivers, right don say, uh,
Dj Moore, Uh Kellen, Kellen right Alan, They've got his
comet at tight end. They've got as good as skill
people as anybody. And it doesn't mean anything. I would
keep Sam Darnold, you know, and I think you could
probably get him.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
What did Baker sign for a call in three years?
Around one hundred million? Yeah, I think that he would.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
He would be because you don't know Jj McCarthy. I mean,
look how many of these first round quarterbacks that miss.
You know, I think Jj is going to be a
great player, but we don't know that where we see
what Sam.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
Does and uh, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
I think the Bikings are going to come out of
this thing and end up winning the division.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
I really do.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Yeah, host the Packers this weekend. Finally, you do a
lot of college football. You were obviously a coach at Pitt.
You're a great recruiter. You were tied with Jimmy Johnson
for years at the college level. Ohio State, Oregon. Listen
the first round of the playoffs, the road team were awful.
I think we go to neutral fields, the games will
be much more competitive. I really worry about Texas. I

(09:08):
always feel Texas leaves too many points on the sideline.
I watched Ohio State and I think they're so dynamic.
Ryan Day gets a lot of crap. You do Big
ten networks stuff. So you've seen Ohio State every week.
They lost to Michigan in Oregon. But if you felt
like all year long, did you feel like Ohio State
was the best team, did you feel Oregon was? What

(09:28):
do you make of that matchup?

Speaker 3 (09:31):
No, I thought Oregon was, to be honest with you,
up until about.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Two weeks ago, three weeks ago, I think Ohio State
everyone they have the most talent. When they played Oregon
the first time, it's very difficult. Yes, it was out
of Oregon, we know that. But it's very difficult to
practice the type of speed early in the year that
Oregon has on their football team, at running back, at quarterback,

(09:58):
at receiver. Defensively, they are a fast football team. And
you know, I remember we were at Miami and we've
been played the Oklahomas in the world.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
I mean, it.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Took us time and we could You couldn't simulate that
in practice, right, But I think it's the year year's
going on.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
I think Ohio State has fond its rhythm.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I think they've recommitted to the running game where they're
a lot more balanced right now, and I like Ohio
State right now where they're at. Early on, they were
just so caught up in this wide receiver talent and
we're going to open it up and on and on.
I mean that's why they lost to Oregon in the
first game. I think they had seven runs the whole
second half, you know, so they No, seriously, they've recommitted

(10:41):
to the run game. They've got two outstanding backs and
all those kids that there was about seven guys that
would have been top two three round draft picks in
Ohio State. They all came back for one reason to
win that championship. And boy, I think I think last
week beating Tennessee, that was a.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Lot of pressure.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
I mean, all everybody's talk about this is scc SEC Tennessee.
You know, everybody should be in playoffs from the SEC.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
It wasn't even a game. Yeah, that did a lot
for Ohio State's confidence.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, I agree. Dave Wantstat, one of the good guys
Bears Dolphins, Big Ten Network, Great Seniors always coach.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
All right, call him be safe, buddy, all right.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
In Chicago and his condo overlooks the city. He has
so much information and so many stories. And I don't know,
I was very much rabel in Chicago, that Ben Johnson
thing after last night. I don't know. I'm watching Bryce
Young resurgence, Sam resurgence, Baker resurgence. All about a coordinator,

(11:42):
an offensive coach. I mean, it's just Herbert with Harball.
Herbert's always been good, Jared Goff with Dan Campbell. Jared
Goff's always been good. That's different. But when a quarterback
has lost, how do you resurrect the French? How do
you resurrect the quarterback, not the franchise, the kid. It's
generally offensive coach, certain sensibility. The defensive guys don't have.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Jmack with the news.

Speaker 8 (13:10):
No, no, no, turn on the news.

Speaker 5 (13:13):
This is the headline news.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
All right.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Let's get started with the Detroit Lions and Ben Johnson,
their offensive coordinator and Dan Campbell, do they play their
guys Monday night. If the Vikings lose on Sunday to
the Packers, you know, and then the Lions have the
number one seed, that's interesting. And that's when you know
Week seventeen eighteen betting is so difficult. I'm not touching
Lions Niners. So if the Vikings win on Sunday against

(13:37):
green Bay, the Week eighteen game between Minnesota and Detroit
becomes a winner take all contest for home field advantage
throughout the playoffs, which means that the Lions game against
the Niners Monday could have no impact on the race
at all. Dan Campbell, I don't want to hear about it.

Speaker 8 (13:54):
It's easy for everybody that way. All the critics can
jump out and start attacking. But that way you don't
have to debate him anymore. We're bringing everything we got
to this game and we are playing. I don't care
what it looks like and where it's at, or who's this,
who's that. We're going out to play and win this
game out on the West Coast.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
So there you go.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
Don't love it sounds like a guy who's inside the
they just got a touchdown is a two point conversion time,
we're going penalty back to you up, We're still going
remember that against the Cowboys. Yeah, I don't like this
new information. What do you say, new information, new opinion,
new opinion. So Dan Campbells would be like, oh, we'll see,
we'll see what's going on. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
I don't know what well I think he You know
how like as a parent, it's much easier to go
from tough parent to softer parent. You can't go from
ice cream for breakfast dad to disciplinarian and kids don't
buy it there. So I think it's easier to be
hyper aggressive Dan Campbell and be a little less aggressive

(14:58):
than be guy that never takes a gamble into wild
wild West coach who's rolling the dice. And so I
think he is holding on to sort of the hyper
aggressive model. And I think there will come a time
in one of these games over the next month that
he can pull back a little and just say it
made sense. But I do think it's always better to

(15:21):
be tough dad and move back to a little more
empathetic dad than it is softy into your kids aren't
gonna buy it, your team's not gonna buy, hey, I
mean business. If you've been like the nice coach and
the soft coach and the ice cream for breakfast dad,
it's tough to pivot to that.

Speaker 5 (15:42):
I do think Detroit could really use that buy. I
mean everybody could. But this team is so walking wounded
right now, defensively offensive, like, I think they really need
to buy. Next up, Colin is the Chicago Bears last
week ghastly performance intertroim head coach Thomas Brown. It's been
a rough goat saw we say, ten game losing streak,

(16:02):
and then last night in the fourth quarter, I mean,
this is this is like laughable stuff, Colin. Chicago was
down three with all three timeouts, fourth and one from
its own thirty nine, with two fourteen left in the game.
Fourth and one became fourth and sixth false start. Brown
sent out the punning unit only to call a timeout.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Colin.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
It was just an embarrassing stuff from the Bears. They
ended up converting the fourth down, but stalled and didn't
even get to kick a field goal.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
I mean they had a great touchdown thrown it got
called back.

Speaker 5 (16:33):
That Caleb pass was incredible, Oh.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
I mean he does that one twice a game. You
can see all. You can see the sizzle. There's no
question he's got the talent.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
Thomas Brown not not a good stretch here for that.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Well, he's been asked to go from quarterback coach to
play caller in a very short stretch. I think it's
an unwinnable situation. I don't blame the coach, it's the
coaching's not good. Just like when you fired Robert Sall,
you fire Matty eber Plusch, you're firing the best coach
on the staff. Sala was the best Jets coach. Ibert
Fluts was probably the best coach. That's why it was

(17:05):
a head coach. So when you do that, you are
I don't think it's ever a good thing to let
the best player, the best coach out of the building.
That's a tough call, especially midseason tough.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
One final story is Albert Breer reported last night that
the Seahawks quote love Geno Smith as a player and
a person. Brier also said that Gino would be looking
for commitment from the ORG this offseason. Gino is doe
twenty five mili in cast next season, and there are
now nine quarterbacks making more than fifty mil a year

(17:41):
Gino is thirty four years old, probably his last chance
at a big pay day. I mean, does Gino have
any does he have a leg to stand on if
he wants to play hardball, say, hey, everybody else is
getting fifty mili, you got to bump me up. I
don't know that he does.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
His passer rating has gone backwards three years in a
row as they added better weapons. So again, nice guy,
nice story. You're in a division with Stafford McVeigh Shanahan.
And by the way, well, I mean, I just think

(18:16):
if you look at the NFC now, there was about
a two year window and one of those was Gino's
first year in Seattle. There's about a two year window
where Russell left Seattle and Aaron left the Jets, and
it feels like, you know, there was a there.

Speaker 5 (18:29):
Was a little under packers.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Yeah, there was just a little bit of a window
for the Seahawks, you know, and they they Gino was
a pro bowler, and Goff was getting settled in in Detroit,
and Detroit wasn't Detroit yet. And now Goff's hummon, you're right,
and Stafford's hummon, and Jordan loves great and Sam Darnold's
great and you start looking around and going, Gino doesn't
that up. He's like the seventh to eighth best quarter

(18:54):
by now, Jadeen Daniels is hummon. Caleb Williams is going
to get a legit. Coach, You're gonna look up and
you're gonna have yourself the eighth to ninth best quarterback
and Jalen Hurts is better.

Speaker 5 (19:05):
That was that that Seattle year with Gino. I'm getting
triggered because that was the year I had to shave
the thing in the side of my head. Remember when
I was like, oh, Seahawk, that was my five hundred.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
One of my favorite days in the history of the show.
I mean we should break that right.

Speaker 5 (19:18):
You know has cratered since then the window was closed.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
I don't know if he's cratered or the NFC got
better fast, but his.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Numbers are down. And like you said, they've They've got
awesome wide receivers, good running back game.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Smith and Jacoba can play Metcalf, Lockett can still play
no offense. Charbonnet Walker when he's healthy, crossed the left tackle.
They got players. It's not a lack of players.

Speaker 5 (19:39):
And I'm sure Gino will be like, hey, it was a.
It was a new head co offensive coordinator, he came
from college, blah blah blah.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
But like, I don't know, Jayden Daniels has a new
head coach and coordinator. He's pretty good. Can't use that, aye,
I mean that's not a legit excuse. Michael Pennix got
thrown into a game. I don't know. He looked really good.

Speaker 5 (19:57):
Yeah, so Sam Darnold, is that? Does that do anything
for you in Seattle? I Cousins, how.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
About Russell Wilson? Again, I would say Kirk Cousins for
a year? One year, Kirk Cousins, and you have to
draft a quarter Yes, I don't Riley Leonard third round.
Seattle's roster set outside of quarterback. I mean, I'm dead
serious on this. I would make the argument, if you're

(20:34):
Seattle and you love cam Ward, would you give up
three first and DK Mill. I'm just throwing it out.

Speaker 5 (20:40):
The history, like the history of trading up for the
number one pick. Okay, the Brice Young deal. I know
he's played better, it still looks.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Like fuckingly historical. Jmack with the News, Well that's.

Speaker 5 (20:52):
The news, and thanks for stopping by the lie.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
He was six and all last week will he come
back down to Earth?

Speaker 6 (21:00):
Well he regress to the mean? Jmax picks next, be
sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays at noon.
Easter not a Empacific, got a Fox.

Speaker 5 (21:11):
Sports happed to make your picks.

Speaker 9 (21:12):
One of the questions is which QB will out the
most passing yards Colin We got Baker Mayfield versus the Panthers,
Jordan Love versus the Vikings, Darnold versus the Packers, or Cooper.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
Rush in Philadelphia. Baker Mayfield against the Panthers.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
I like that call, though he has struggled in I
think the defensive coordinator got there. He struggled in three
or four games against them, including earlier this year. But
given those options, I don't hate your pick. I think
you're warming up just for the stretch.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Run there, buddy, Hey, a couple of five and o's
will change America's opinion.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
All everybody cares about his playoffs. Nail those pick against
the Chiefs.

Speaker 7 (21:51):
There you go.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
I had a rough regular season, all right, here we go.
The former newspaper guy made headlines for a living. Then
he wanted to make some real money and moved into
digital and TV. Tomorrow's headlines today Chargers Patriots. I stayed
away in Foxboro. I stayed away from this one man.
What do you make of it?

Speaker 5 (22:10):
Listen, I don't love the card this week. I'll be upfront.
I don't love it. I mean I bet these five
bowl games today like codo garbage games, just throw money.
I have pizza money for fun. But let's start Chargers Patriots.
I like this Chargers team. I like the vibes. Patriots
were good last week, ended up losing the headline will
b McConkie, see mconkie, do boats go bananas? I will

(22:32):
take the Chargers in New England. This line's at four
and a half. It's creeping up a little bit. There's
some interesting stuff here. So hey, Christmas week. Who wants
to travel East east to play a game in the
cold weather. However, Chargers have had four to one pm
starts this year. They have dominated the first half of
all those games. They've led a halftime of all four.
Now they're not playing great teams, one with Pittsburgh. But

(22:53):
what does that say, Colin? That's a Jim Harball thing.
This dude is always prepared, and I do look at
this Patriots team. They were they gave everything max effort
last week in Buffalo. Right, Hey, we want to play
spoiler division rival. I think they let their guard down
a little bit this week. I don't like some of
the vibes in New England, some of the chatter from
the head coach Mayo. Is he coming back? Are we certain?

(23:14):
Do you think he's definitely back next year? Because yes, okay?
And you think Kraft is going on the cheap all right,
So I'll go with Chargers. Drake may has had a
pretty good, you know run this year. I think he's
shown well. But this Chargers defense has played excellent. I'll
take the Chargers twenty seven to thirteen.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
Tomorrow's headlines today Broncos at the Bengals. I love Denver
in this spot.

Speaker 5 (23:39):
You know, listen, we love talking Broncos on this show.
You have made them like what maybe like the like
the show favorite. You love this team because you're all
over them. However, the headline will be mall walking Bengals
keep Broncos out of step. Look at that little mallwalking.
My mom likes to go to the mall and walk
around in Florida because it's too hot.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Colin.

Speaker 5 (24:01):
I cannot get enough of Patrick Shurtan versus Jamar Chase.
So I've been digging into this matchup. Patrick Shurtan the
season one touchdown allowed. He has allowed one catch over
twenty yards. He's been locked down. But he's going up
against Chase, who leads the NFL in receptions, yards touchdowns.
He's on fire. They met in twenty twenty one. You

(24:21):
want to guess who had the better of that matchup,
Jamarr Chase one catch for three yards against Cirtan. Now
is twenty twenty one. A lot has changed, but this
is interesting. If t Higgins cannot go, I will not
feel good about my Bengals pick. But ultimately I think
Cincinnati gets it. I think they're on a mission. I
would not be surprised if we hear after the fact

(24:42):
Joe Burrow made it impassion plea in the locker room.
I want to get. In the playoffs, you're seeing a
different Burrow. He's been fired up on the bench, talking
back a little bit to the coach.

Speaker 1 (24:51):
Lit intent.

Speaker 5 (24:52):
I like Burrow here getting the dub and the Bengals
win and cover.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
You said your mom likes walking in the mall JMX.
Everybody's mom likes walking.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
That's a Grandma thing. I did not know that.

Speaker 1 (25:01):
Okay, yeah, tomorrow's headlines today. The game that I didn't
put in the Blazing five, but it was the last game.
I like the Rams in this spot. It's a number situation.
What say you, I could have swore Tuesday on this show,
you lot?

Speaker 6 (25:14):
I did.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Yeah, so if the number got worse, who cares?

Speaker 5 (25:18):
At six and a half, the headline will be pook
A boo, I see you playing Rams. Ain't no fun
in games. Oh my gosh, this is the ultimate revenge
spot of the week. Do you remember the Cardinals smashed
them this year forty one to ten, ultimate massive beatdown.
Pooka did not play. Cooper Cup left in the first
quarter and it was just an absolute beat down. I

(25:38):
like the Rams here big. This feels like a little payback.
And if you're Arizona man, you went into last week,
come on, we got we were leading the division and
it's starting to fall apart. You're playing the Panthers, you
start slow, you come back, you lose in overtime. Overtime loss,
Gotta travel back home.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
So laike kerwounds.

Speaker 5 (25:56):
Yeah, I'm seeing both tackles out seeing James Connor is questionable.
Does Connor just say, hey, let me just shut it down.
Nothing to play for. I like the Rams here, McVeigh.
I wouldn't be surprised that this was thirty seven to twenty.
Rams really put on a show. Hey, you gave out
the number. What is McVeigh like ten and one in December?
He is a great late season coach, and I think

(26:17):
they put it on himy.

Speaker 1 (26:19):
Andy, Reid and Belichick really good when it gets frosty.
Tomorrow's headline fay Colts at Giants. I thought about this
one too. I tell you I like that Colts roster.
I do, and I like the Colts a lot. You
see that number, it's coming down, and I'll tell you why.

Speaker 5 (26:34):
The headline will be just like we drew it up,
Giants get closer to locking up number one pick. Look
at Dable there, Listen, Drew Locke. He was bad against Atalanta,
which is a bottom feeder defense. However, in the last
thirty minutes here, Anthony Richardson has not practiced yet all week.
They thought he was going to go today, so now

(26:55):
they just listed him as questionable and Joe Flacco was
taking first team reps yeah all week, So now it's
Joe Flacco, which to me, when last week saw Flaco.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
That was pretty rough. It was pretty rough.

Speaker 5 (27:05):
He was awful. Yeah, and now I'm a little buyer
from worse. However, like like the headline said, this is
a Giants team that wants the number one pick badly.
You look at who's starting on the offensive line for them.
A lot of defensive players are who are these dudes
practice squad guys? I mean Colin. They're not a competitive
team this year. I do think Flacco can do enough.
Jonathan Taylor, by the way, running wild, he is having

(27:26):
a season. They got a good team.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Man, Oh I did. I'm Seattle and the Colts they're
quarterback away. I like the rosters, I like the GMS.

Speaker 5 (27:35):
We like Stichen. I think the Colts will be fine here.
At seven and a half's a big number to be laying
on the road. But the Giants going for the winless
season at home. It's bad in New York between the
Jets and the Giants, it is. It's a It's a
rough go for New York football.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
Two more to go. I'm interested in this one. Tomorrow's
headlines today, You're your optimism has pivoted to skepticism and
cynicism on the Jet Jets bills? What what isn't in
what like July in August?

Speaker 5 (28:04):
Come on, when Aaron Rodgers wasn't saying nonsense, Colin, This
one could get ugly. The headline will be green with envy,
wicked wits from West Melts Aaron Rodgers. You know, Mangini
said something awesome earlier. Aaron's talking like he wants to
be released. I know, you know, I didn't. I thought
at the time he was just taking a shot. But

(28:25):
from Mangini, who was a head coach to say that,
and Mangini dealt with Woody, he knows you know how
ticked off Woody Johnson must be. And oh, by the way,
I'm looking at the Jets all of a sudden, Devonte
Adams not practicing this week, Saut Gardner not practicing, the
Jets injury reports, they're best players the Penn State tackle out.
Two other linemen haven't practiced. Avt has not. So this
line is starting to creep up to nine and a half.

(28:47):
One of the producers just texted me it's hitting ten
in some spots. So I know Buffalo has nothing to
technically play for, right, But this is Buffalo Jets.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
Buffalo Holmes are tough out.

Speaker 5 (28:58):
Yeah, I think this one could get ugly and go sideways.
I'll go thirty one to seven bills.

Speaker 1 (29:04):
With Okay, I took the Buckeyes over the Ducks. Tomorrow's
headlines today that Boise State Nifney Lions games got your
interest peaked.

Speaker 5 (29:12):
So we love the playoff last week. I mean it
was it was spectacular.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
Well you did. I took dogs, warming my heart, You
took favorites. You were right, say, favorite role at home.
Now we go neutral site this week. Okay, I do
like your.

Speaker 5 (29:24):
Ohio State pick. I would add that. Now these games
are Wednesday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Yes, yeah, so we got some time.
Will chew them up. But the headline for this one
will be Ashton Powers running back Shags game balls after
movie performance. I'm going with it outright. Upset here dog
give me Boise State taking down Penn State.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (29:46):
I took the points already and the more I dig in, listen,
I like Penn State a lot. They're great at home.
We know into the white out scenario against SMU, it
was it was a scene and SMU gave the game away.
I don't think boys is gonna do that. And you look,
I'm just telling you, if you want to have fun,
go look up. As did gent versus Oregon this year.
Oregon could not stop him under and nobody's supposed to.

(30:07):
Nobody stops this guy. And I know the competition wasn't great,
but we're gonna see this guy become like one of
those Oh this guy's legit. Carving up Penn State should
be a good game. I'm more fired up for this,
I think than any of the games. I'll have to
say it. Oregon's great, Texas Arizona State a little like
Georgia Notre Dame. Baby, Well, it's a backup quarterback for Georgia.

(30:27):
It's Georgia and the Notre Dame stuff that's percolating behind
the scenes, which we which we alluded to yesterday. I
don't know if we get to it here at headlines.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
But there's the College Football Playoff. I'm excited for you. No,
it's gonna be great. We do this at the end
of every week. I foreshoot it, pick an up set.
Let's go to the NFL schedule. Sorry, radio audience, I'm
not going to read all the games. I like the
Atlanta Falcons to upset the Washington Commanders. Michael Pennix impressed me.
Do you have an upset?

Speaker 5 (30:56):
Well, what's the line on the Falcons four and a half?
Is that really an upset? H oh Man, Colin, this
is bleak. I'd rather take Arizona State against Texas than
any of this pooh poo platter.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
Carolina at Tampa, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:10):
Yeah, I'll go. Yeah, I guess I would go Carolina.
We've been feisty late in this season, man, and I
saw Winfield ruled out another receiver.

Speaker 1 (31:19):
How about that beat up today? If you could draft
Bryce Young or CJ. Stroud, who would you take?

Speaker 5 (31:25):
I can't do it. Out of the six game stable size,
I would still take Straft.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
It's nice, looks pretty good. It's yeah, Bryce looks pretty good.

Speaker 5 (31:32):
He has looked. He's shown well. The Dallas game he
did not play well. Yeah, a few weeks ago at home. Yeah,
it's a it's a tough NFL's late this week and
the three game Saturday, so there's not a billion games Sunday,
you know, this is a hang with the fam a
little bit weekend.

Speaker 1 (31:46):
Yeah, well I'm I'm I'm Saturday, I'm gonna be watching
football Day.

Speaker 5 (31:50):
Yeah, the Saturday games are musty. I don't know how
I'm gonna get out of family stuff, but you know,
maybe put in a call, call me and act like
there's like a big story, and then I'll just tell
the family, Hey, I need some time away breaking news
or yeah yeah, yeah, we all right.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
I can do that.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
And if there's a club we go to from time
to time, it's a good time, haven't been there in
a while, it could go to the club.

Speaker 5 (32:09):
I don't think the White's gonna want you doing that.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
But uh well, okay, sometimes you have to put your
foot down on fun. Sometimes you got to stand on business. Okay,
nice week of shows. Everybody want to thank Eric Mangini
and Dave wand Stat for stopping by. We've had a
lot of fun this week. Next week is an all
Timer Monday Tuesday Wednesday shows to Monday Tuesday shows all
