Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go Monday, two hours down, one to go,
Flying by Jim Harbaugh. Fifteen minutes. It's La, It's the Herd.
Thanks for making us part of your day, So j Mac.
Cowboy quarterback Dak Prescott, according to now Adam Schefter, gonna
miss several weeks hamstring injury, seeking a second opinion to
confirm treatment options. So defense is banged up.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Back out.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
They're a disaster. Listen, here's the good news. This will
get Dallas if their last their next three games are Philadelphia,
the Texans, the Commanders are gonna lose all those. So
my take is we'll no end up with a top
five or six draft pick. It's it's not a great draft,
but it's a draft in which if you start looking
at this schedule, it's a bunch of l's.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I'll be shocked. If they win any of their next three.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Games, they'll beat the Giants at home, and maybe Cincinnati
and Care. They may have a few wins, but it's
gonna be a tidy. This team's gonna draft in the
in the bottom.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yeah, but what do you do, Like, if you're drafting
let's say seventh.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
You try to move down to tenth, twelfth and get
a couple of really good players.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
You can do that in a quarterback rich draft.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I well, well, well if cam Ward, somebody's gonna go
all in on cam Ward, somebody's gonna go in on
shudor Sanders. So if Shador goes number one, and then
it gets filled in a little bit, and all of
a sudden, you have the fifth or sixth pick and
you say, okay, we want your will flip one. We
want a two and a three and a two next year.
It's amazing how quickly if you land three or four
(01:50):
really good players. Yeah, as Ed Werder said, two rookie
offensive linemen. They overvalued those picks. They are a mess
up front.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Yeah. Remember a lot of people were pegging the Boise
State running back to Dallas, and like, okay, he's been phenomenal,
but the offensive line stinks. The Lions drafted Gibbs early. Remember,
everybody got on their case, but they had an offensive line.
They had a plan. I don't know what Dallas's plan is, Colin.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, they I think that. Here's the good news about
the NFL. I mean, look at Denver. If you get
the right coach, you can turn things around really quickly.
And so get the right coach. Let's start with that.
And whether it's Mike Rabel or Bill Belichick or it's
some hot shot, whatever it is, get the right coach.
And then if you're a top ten team, do everything
you can to move down in the draft and accumulate
(02:38):
better picks. I mean, we've seen this before, the Houston Texans.
You Land, you hit four or five mid round picks.
You can get good fast. In this league, you can
get you can get pretty good really fast. Not gonna
get great from bad, but you can get pretty good.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I mean, you haven't gone down the whole roster. But
who's got more talent the Chicago Bears or the Dallas
Calvaly Bears. Not even Okay, we could do this with
like twenty teams. The Cowboys don't have a lot of
good football players, right Now, who's that on? That'sara McCarthy.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
That's a good point, Jim Harbaugh fifteen minutes. Well, speaking
of the Bears, they dropped their second straight game, really
looked unimpressive on the road against Arizona yesterday, and I
think the blame should fall to Chicago's coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and neon Eastern not am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Well, we knew the Chargers would be better because they
have it on the world's best football coaches. Jim Harbaugh
first year as the Chargers coach, fifteen years played in
this league. But they've gotten better fast because most of
the same players as last year. And here's the coach.
Beat Cleveland. Win in those road games in the Midwest
for an LA team not easy. So I want to
start with this. You had said when you took the job.
(03:53):
We don't want to be as reliant on Justin Herbert.
We love him, he's amazing, but we want to be
we don't want to just you know, you see some
of these quarterbacks doing forty eight times a Sunday. That's
not healthy. How did Justin handle you saying, hey, you
don't need to throw forty times? How did he handle it?
Speaker 4 (04:11):
It was you know when you're when you're starting to
talk there and talking about, uh, you know, how the
team's doing and how you know the same players from
last year. Uh, you know Justin Herbert. I mean, let's
just for two seconds, let's just just go there. I mean,
there's there's nobody better. There's nobody, Uh you know, there's
(04:33):
Lamar's playing really good. Uh you know, and and I
think those two are playing at a really high level
right now, and some others. But uh, I don't think
anybody's playing better than Justin Herbert is. And and I
know you have great respect for him, Colin, yeah. Uh.
And I mean it's a it's a love and admiration
(04:54):
that that we have for for Justin that he's incredible.
Everything that he does, we can we could spend the
whole the whole show talking about him, but it just
hits me like this, like every day when we go
out there to practice, we're around greatness. This is this
is what greatness looks like. And uh, you know, God
(05:15):
willing and the creek don't rise, Uh, this will be
the this will be the the holy quarterback I ever coach.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Again, Yeah, well that would be. And he's big, and
he's strong and he's durable. Now I got one of
the things that we question. We said, boy, we don't
know if the Chargers have perimeter sideline talent to play
with the teams. And Quinton Johnston had a rough rookie year,
but when he's been healthy, you guys have really your
staff has figured out how to use him. Talk a
(05:42):
little about that, because first of all, it's hard as
a rookie in the NFL. It's hard for everybody. But
he has really flourished over the since you arrived. What
did you do?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
It's really what he's done, Colin me. In the training environment,
He's he's gotten stronger, He's he's he has a great speed.
He's really worked hard on his route discipline, uh, his
mechanics Snjay lower receiver coach has done an incredible job
uh coaching Uh coaching q and uh you know he
(06:13):
just keeps keeps getting better and better and better. And
uh you know he's just so sort of showing us
so much in terms of uh the speed, uh, toughness,
Uh you know, uh, playing smart, playing with great effort blocking.
It's it's just it's just better, better, improving, improving, And
(06:35):
you know, our our our whole receiving corps when you
look at it has been that way. I mean Lad McConkey, Uh,
he's done an incredible job. Josh Palmer, uh doing a
super super job. Got Darius Davis back this week and
he he gave us a big, big punt return. Uh.
Jalen Rager who we added, has done a done a
(06:57):
you know, a really good job for us. So and
then DJ Shark we think, oh, I'll be back this week.
So we're getting uh, we're getting a lot of premier
help already, and we feel like we're uh, it's just
gonna it's just going to grow, grow and grow, and
that bodes well for our team.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
We all know your brother coaches in the NFL, but
you were gone from the NFL, Jim, for a decade,
and I mean football's football. Your teams are physical, relentless
and tough and smart. But was there anything being gone
for ten years and coming back into this league that
you had to kind of tweak that you went you
know what, that's a little different. That's a little different.
(07:33):
Was there anything you had to tweak at all. Uh.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
I mean there's definitely some some something's different U In rules, Uh,
those are priced, you know, some of the biggest things.
But equipment changes. We always talk about the safety of
the game. I think that's so much more improved, and
those rules that I talked about earlier, I mean have
been designed to for players safety. Uh. The number one
(07:59):
difference to me at the very top of the list
is the last time I coached in the NFL was
twenty fourteen, and I didn't think that the NFL could
get any bigger, any more popular than it already was then.
But you know now a decade later, I mean it
is it is least you know, two x three x
(08:19):
you know more in terms of popularity.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Yeah, you know the I want you to go to
week one this year and then to yesterday. In that
gap now in college. You got a bunch of kids
in college, they're twenty, they're nineteen. You can see big
growth in the NFL from Week one this year to yesterday.
Where do you grow? Where do you see a pro
team grow with older guys? Guys are twenty six, twenty eight,
(08:47):
they're men. Have you seen big growth? If so, where
on the team.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Yeah, I have you know, big growth. I miss all
the little things, all the you know things that people
think are uh, but it's all those little thousand things
that that add up to make all the difference. And
it's it's all the individuals. I mean, they're they're just attacking, uh,
you know, anything and every opportunity that's been put in
front of them and uh and trying to make the
(09:14):
most of it. And I know we're just going back
to the first game until now, but uh, you know,
I would really point to, you know, just a very
beginning and uh and and where it really all comes from.
It all comes from from the top. It all comes
from uh you know the Spanos family. Uh Dean Spanos,
Uh John Spanos is here every single day, I mean
(09:34):
through the draft process, you know, every practice, uh you know,
every decision. It's it's everybody's just pulling in the same direction.
And they're the ones that that have that have made
that culture. And that's the way it's been and uh,
you know it shows in the players that are here,
justin Herbert Derwin, James Khalil Mack, uh you know, Quentin Johnson,
(09:56):
all those that have been that have been drafted and
signed and George Teas you know, came in and did
an incredible I can count eleven guys that he's signed
as free agents, uh in the off season that have
been significant producers and contributors. So yeah, I think it
just really uh you know, comes from an organization where
(10:18):
everybody is doing anything and everything that they possibly can
to help us win. And then you know, we feel
that I feel that as as as coach, our players
feel it that, you know, our organization, our ownership is
doing anything and everything in their power for us. What's
good for the Bee is good for the Hive. And
(10:38):
then it just it makes you want to do anything
and everything in your powers, my in my power as
a coach, uh, you know, to uh to to help
the organization. And everybody, everybody attacks it in a way
of what I've noticed, like double checking, triple checking, quadruple checking.
And also everybody treats their job like it's the most
important job in the entire organization. Uh. You know, that's
(11:02):
just fun to be around. So when you just you
show up every day and it's like, hey, who else
wants to work? Who else wants it's everybody. Everybody wants
to wants to get after it. So you know, let's go,
let's go. Uh that's that's the thing. And then and
then we just uh you know, just to tag it
with you know, just can't fix everything all at once,
but we can fix one thing at a time all
(11:24):
the time.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Hey, speaking of ge Ortie's the trade deadline? Your brother
got a player, the Bills did, the Chiefs did? You
got to you got a really good team. You got
your tackles, you got your ed rushers, you got in quarterback.
I mean, you got most of the stuff that everybody
wants is there at the trade deadline? Are you interested?
You're gonna make a call?
Speaker 4 (11:42):
What do you make?
Speaker 2 (11:42):
What am I?
Speaker 4 (11:43):
What am I?
Speaker 1 (11:43):
I'm not gonna guess you're smiling like you got a card.
You got a card in your deck here that I
don't know about. What are you gonna do with the
trade deadline?
Speaker 4 (11:53):
I don't know, I don't know. Uh you know it's
that that's a that's a Joe Joe Ortiz. You know
he's Joe Joe Batman. I play Robin and uh you
never know, you know, I looked at your uh your
thing there, I mean, uh the graphic you know, do
do the Chargers need? What do they need? What do
they uh? What do they they need? You know, do
(12:15):
they need receiver help, perimeter help? No, we don't need
we don't need that. I I don't think we. I
can't think of a position right now where we need,
you know, uh to upgrade. I love the guys that
that are here, love them. But if Joe wants somebody
you know and uh, you know, can can can make
(12:36):
us better than I that I know he will. And
all competitors are welcome. Competitors welcome. Twenty twenty four Los
Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
By the way, Lad Camp McConkey. I liked him at Georgia.
You saw him at Michigan when I was boy, he's good,
Like did you think he would be good?
Speaker 3 (12:56):
This good?
Speaker 1 (12:56):
This quick?
Speaker 4 (13:00):
But you just love everything about him? Right? And he
he was good. He was a how do you not
love him? Really? I mean he he walked down at
Georgia and then then played significant contributor as a freshman,
as a sophomore, as a junior. Uh, he's and he's
a great guy. I mean aside from from the football, Uh,
you know, by his talent, by his effort. He is
(13:22):
known but Uh he is. He is just such a respectful,
good guy. You know. Okay, that's a side. And I
know where that comes from. Uh that that was poured
into him by uh, poured into him by his parents,
uh Benji and Brittany. And I had a great chance
to meet him, a chance chance encounter at the combine.
(13:45):
My son Jack was with me. We went to get breakfast,
one of those breakfast places, something with a fork in
the name, and you know, we're walking to we're walking
to pay the bill, and you know, I see all
these Georgia people and you know, go dogs, Uh how
are y'all doing? And uh, well you really you really
got after us. A couple of years ago. Oh yeah,
(14:06):
we were there, coach. We remember, we're uh we're mister
and missus McConkey, and this is our family and some
of the other uncles and and uh and family members
were there and we had a we had a lovely conversation.
Uh there and I could I could see right there,
you know what, uh you know what had been poured
into him, and uh yeah it was Uh. We wanted
(14:27):
some of that. We wanted we wanted a lot of
that because uh, as I said, competitors, welcome here at
the Los Angeles Chargers.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Finally, I don't think, Jim, I've seen you smile this much.
There is something you were great in college. You're you're
one of the all time greats. There's something about the NFL.
You got a smart quarterback who's a tough guy like you.
You seem happy, right, That's what I say. That's what
I see, happy Jim Harball. Even on the games when
(14:54):
Harbard comes over to you, it's like you just in
a good mood every time I see you.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
Do you notice that, Yeah, we we That's that's true.
I mean I think that is uh, guiltiest charged there,
very happy and we have we have a we have
a good time here. We work hard, but we have
a good time doing it. And then, uh, you know,
our guys get dead serious about winning on game day. Uh,
(15:20):
you know, no question about that. And they you know,
they they put the work in it just it just
becomes infectious, you know, like you know those that I
those those that I named before. Uh, I mean there's
nobody like Derwin James, uh that I've ever encountered in
football as a as a as a teammate or as
a player. Or a coach, and I could just go
down the l k mac uh klil mack. I mean,
(15:43):
he's the most humble, hungry warrior you could ever be around.
And uh and Justin uh In so many others. I'm
I could I could name another another forty five guys.
I mean, just I love these guys and uh, there's
no doubt though I sit at my desk, you know,
right before, right before we did this interview. I mean,
it's like Justin's on our team.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yes, well competitors.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
It's great.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
It's uh yeah, it's it's a yeah, we're we're attacking
and we're having fun doing it.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Coach, what a pleasure after a win. Go have a
nice lunch, enjoy your day. Make it the best day
of the week until next Sunday. It's great seeing you again.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Well, I appreciate it. Uh you know, I'm a big, big, big,
huge fan of yours, and uh appreciate, uh appreciate everything.
And just how much you you know you you love
and respect Justin too. I mean that's that's pretty darn cool.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, what a great kid.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
There's nobody tougher. You know, there's my own personal ranking,
you know, and this is this is my right to
have my own personal ranking. So I'm gonna go preface
it's with that that it's not anybody else's, it's mine.
But I've always considered my of the toughest quarterback in
the history of the National Football League. Uh, being around
Justin Herbert, I have moved to number two in the rankings.
(17:12):
Justin Herbert is the toughest quarterback in the history of
the National Football League. I mean this, this guy is uh,
I mean, it's it's become like hack a shack, you
know the way Uh yeah, the way he remember remember
the old Shack chase, and and uh they they just
hack him. He's so big and he's so tough to
get on the ground that uh, I mean the ball's
(17:33):
thrown and the it could be the ball's ten yards
downfield and there's still somebody trying to wrestle and grapple
him to the ground. Uh. He gets hit when he
goes out of bounds. He gets hit in the head.
Uh he gets face masked during the play. It's uh,
you know, it's incredible, and yeah, I just I just
(17:54):
don't have enough adjectives to uh to describe, uh, you
know what what being around this this young man is
like and just how fortunate we are as an organization
to have him as our as our quarterback. And the
last thing I would say too is I mean we've
all heard of people that you know that make a
lot of money, and you know money makes people complacent. Yeah,
(18:18):
not justin Herbert, no way, guys. He was right back
in here. I know where to find him, six thirty
seven thirty in the morning. On an off day, he's
right down there in the weight room or you know,
getting extra film work. It's never comes in the shovel, never,
never sleepy. Just it's like he's like a jackhammer, you know,
(18:39):
just just always attacking.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Love him, God lit I and I love He's one
of the nicest kids I've ever met my whole life.
I've been doing this thirty years. I don't think I've
met a nicer, more respectful human being who's a star
in my whole life. And there's been a lot of
good guys, a bunch of good guys.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
He is.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
He is like nobody else, just genuine salt of the earth.
You can tell you have good parents, good upbringing, quality dude,
and I love that you love it.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
There's no doubt about it. Mark and Holly, Herbert did
an incredible job. They should take a deep long bow.
That one son's playing at Oregon right now. The other
is a resident at u c l A medical school.
Uh and guess where Justin lives. Roommates with his brother?
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Does he brothers?
Speaker 4 (19:22):
How about that? You know?
Speaker 1 (19:23):
I love that?
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Is that? Is that incredible? I mean he probably doesn't
want me saying stuff like this, but I just I
just just every day, you know, just Uh, it's just
it's just awesome, awesome being around him. Coach your your
you're spot out. He is he is a he is
a He's a wonderful guy off the field. Uh and
and a great player on it.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Hey, tell your PR guy, Josh. Thanks. He hustles for
me all the time. He's really good. He's good, dude.
Speaker 4 (19:49):
Tell me he's one of those guys in the organization.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
All right, catch you all right, coach Hardball.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
I'm getting the I'm getting the hook.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Jim Harvaugh. It's Herbert's just one on one, just such
a great kid. And Lad McConkie and Joe Alton. They
got these new guys in this culture. And I tell
you yesterday, Quinton Johnson, You're like, Okay, that's what a
first rounder.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Look.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
That kid's big, like six ' four runs. You just
like Jim said, you had to get stronger, had to
figure the routes out. But they're pretty darn good. All Right,
We take a break, wrap it up live in Los Angeles.
Still a lot of show left. It's The Herd.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern non am Pacific.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Sunday, we kick off a huge day of football on
Fox with a special two hour Veterans Day pregame show
live from the Naval Station San Diego. Then brock Perty
and the Niners take on Baker Mayfield and the Bucks
or other regional action. Check out the listings for the
game in your area, only on Fox.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Excited for that. By the way, Kansas City hosts Baker
Tonightday Night Football Tampa's beat If Tampa was at full strength,
I think it'd be a really interesting game. But they're not.
You get to these week nine ten matchups, you're missing
a lot of stars and some teams, like the Rams
were beat up early, now they're getting healthier. San Francisco
(21:15):
beat up early, getting healthier and then some teams, you know,
like Tampa, were healthy early in the falling apart, so
I'm kind of interested to watch the night. My guess
is Kansas City wins, but I would have loved to
have seen a Buccaneers team at full strength. They can
do a gotcha to almost anybody in this league. J
Mack with the news, No turns.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
This is the headline news.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
I want to start with the big breaking news out
of San Francisco. Adam Schefter reports the Niners have opened
the practice window for Christian McCaffrey and there are reports
he is going to practice this week and he's currently
on track to play in Week ten against Tampa. A
big shot in the arm. Adding McCaffrey, you know, he's
(22:01):
had a bunch of injuries here the last like two months.
This do anything to change your thoughts on on the
Niners going forward?
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Oh? Absolutely. I think they're red zone They'll they'll get
touchdowns instead of field goals in the red zone. I
also think Jordan Mason has established himself as a very
good number two back, and so I mean I think
they have like in Jordan Mason's not Christian McCaffrey, but
he's a better than average number two. So and he's
gotten reps as a number one. So I think when
Deebo's healthy and Christian mccaff for you healthy, I think
(22:32):
that there's a dynamic with a team that they're They're
really good on third and fourth and short, they're really
good in the red zone, and right now they're a
good team. They're settling for field goals. Yeah, So when
when you can get a field goal team to be
a touchdown team, I think that that's the tipping point
with the Niners. So I think we said this two
weeks ago. I thought they were overvalued early. Now I
(22:52):
think they're a bye. I think they're undervalued. This is
still arguably the best team in the NFC, along with Detroit.
I think Detroit and said San Francisco.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
I think, no, Ayuk right, he's done for the year. Kidtle,
you have d but.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
You've got a couple of new receivers.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
They like, what have you done for me lately?
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Prove it?
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Ricky Pierce, you know, let's see it, Jennings, if he's look.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
At this, look at the playoff picture for our radio
audience right now, the seven teams in the NFC that
are in Lions Commanders, Falcons, Cardinals, Clild card teams are Vikings, Eagles, Packers.
I think the Rams are getting in in San Francisco.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
I think, okay, who's coming out?
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Though?
Speaker 1 (23:29):
You got both Vikings, Vikings coming out, Arizona coming out.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
So Rams win the division or Niners.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Both win eleven games, both be ten eleven wins, Arizona'll.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Be like nine and the Vikings are coming out.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
Huh, well they gotta you know now now no more
Colts with Joe Flacco. Now the tough games start.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Interesting. I don't know if I can agree with you there.
I would say Cardinals are coming out for sure, Niners
are coming in.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
I got it.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
The Puka ejection was weird. He did not have a
good first half. I didn't think it was an ejection
worthy punch. But when they have all four of those
guys are supposed to be awesome, and they were not
yesterday for a half. They I think they had three
points at half time or zero.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
They couldn't.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
It was not good. Next up.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
The Saints are not the only team to make a
coaching change after a bad loss so late last night,
the Raiders dumped offensive coordinator Luke Getzi along with their
offensive lines coach and their quarterbacks coach. A bit of
a purge for Antonio Pierce's hapless Raiders. The Raiders had
scored on the opening drive Colin in four of their
(24:37):
last five games, but then only scored a touchdown on
four of fifty other drives. So the scripted stuff, we
got it. You off the script, we got nothing. It's this.
This team's going nowhere. I don't see Pierce latt. I
think he's gonna be one and done with the Raiders.
I think he got to move off.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
I think they're gonna get shad Or Sanders, and I
think they need a special player. I think they're gonna
go draft shad Or Sands. So then do you instantly
make a move on Dion too or do you wait
a year and now you just I think you stay
with this. I think at Shadure Sanders is the answer.
And then I think I think I would spend a
majority of my time in this draft making sure Shadoor
(25:15):
Sanders works. Brock Bowers is great. Colton Miller left tackles
Hey Miller.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Got hurt yesterday too. They had a bunch of injuries.
It was the Raiders just they're a mess. They're one
of the They're not Carolina level bad, but they're down
there right Well.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
I think Carolina with Bryce Young looked a little better yesterday,
a little better. I don't know. They're they're bad. They're bad.
Team New England's not very good either.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
All.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
My final story is to college football. You and I
I believe we both nailed the Ohios date Penn State matchup.
Good game. Penn State did not score an offensive touchdown.
And the big story was after the game where there's
dope in the crowd starts yelling stuff at James Franklin,
and Franklin's not going to take it, and he's ask
the guy what's going on? The little coward ran away?
But Colin did James Franklin Fire James Franklin? Stuff seems
(25:59):
way overblown. He's a very good football code, So what
did he can't beat Ohio State? You're a fire him.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
He's an excellent recruiter and I think he and I
think that is about seventy percent of college football. So
he has struggled against the better team.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
It's like.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
Penn State is not Ohio State, Georgia or Alabama or Texas.
As a recruiting hotbed. It's rural, it's in the middle
of nowhere. Texas is in Austin. Columbus is a big
size city. Athens maybe the coolest college town in the country.
Alabama's a bigger program. I think James Franklin has made
Penn State a relevant top ten program, and I think
that's what they are. They're gonna usually unless they have
(26:40):
a star quarterback, los to Ohio State. That's just the
way it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
Like you said, Franklin's a great recruiter. My brother lives
in Pennsylvania and he's kind of tapped into what's going
on with every kid who's good in high school wants
to go to Penn State. Like that's what you want
to matriculate to after high school.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
They can't do that at US. See, the LA kids
are level, They're going every.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
All around the country. So frank doing a great job.
I just think it's it's overblown, Like, come on, yeah,
he struggled against Ohio State. Ohio State's favored in every game.
They got the best roster in maybe the country.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
The truth is, I thought Penn State was lucky to
hang in there. If Ohio State doesn't fumble, will Howard
fumbled out of the end zone and they lose possession.
The Floodgates could own the pick six two. I mean
it was like, come on, but uh, I mean will
Howard kept it close?
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Yeah, listen, otherwise I'm deniable that Franklin one in sixteen
versus AP top five teams, that's not great. But who
are you're playing like national contenders at that point?
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Like?
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Are you happy with Penn State every year being a
top fifteen, top ten team?
Speaker 1 (27:38):
I look at Penn State. If I was naming current
best top ten programs in the country, Penn State would
be probably in that eight, nine, ten space. Yeah, that's
what they are. And and by the way, Ohio State
would be in the one, two three space.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Yeah, and USC would be where not in that space?
Speaker 4 (27:57):
What is it?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
The grass is not always greener? All these guys who
want to run on Franklin Like.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
Yeah, I'd be very All I know is when I
watch Penn State, I see a bunch of NFL guys.
That's what I see. They don't have right now a
go to wide receiver and Ohio State's got it feels.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
Like four Well, they haven't ever had like a stlam
dunk superstar quarterback? Have they Who was the last one?
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Todd Blackledge, Kerry Collins, Well, I mean those are the two.
I think goes Kerry Collins. Well, Kerry Collins was great.
Blackledge was great. But I mean that's a long time ago.
That's kind of it. J Mack with the news, Well
that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the line. Now,
how good was Jim Harbaugh today? Jim Harball was fired
(28:40):
up today. So, by the way, Dak is going to
be out for a month, ceedee lamb. His injuries not
as severe. He's gonna play. But uh, I think if
you kind of look AFC NFC, I like when we
put the NFC playoff picture up, not a ton of surprises.
I think we both felt that Arizona had good pieces.
We didn't know if they'd be a good team. But
(29:02):
if we put the AFC in the NFC playoff picture up,
the NFC playoff picture for the television audience, so again,
we all knew Detroit was going to be good. We
all knew Green Bay would be in Philadelphia would be
good teams. Atlanta was my pick to win eleven to
twelve games. That wasn't a big I think Arizona's a
little better than people think Minnesota is a little better.
(29:25):
But I think San Francisco and the Rams can point
to injuries, and I think both of those organizations, if healthy,
will catch fire, and I think the Rams and the
Niners will move up, and I think Arizona and the
Vikings will move down. But I don't think there's I mean,
Washington is the shock. That was my dark horse team
to make the playoffs, so I don't think it was
that shocking. If we have the AFC, don I'm not sure.
(29:48):
If we do, you can put that in, but don't.
I don't think. I think week to week the league
feels z aany let's go now. I think the AFC
because your high end quarterbacks are better. Right now, It's Mahomes,
Josh Allen. Pittsburgh is the surprise. Texans Denver again, I
thought they'd be pretty good Denver Chargers Raven. The only
surprise in the AFC is Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
I'm looking at the schedule. The Bengals still have Pittsburgh twice,
and they got the better quarterback in that matchup, so
the Bengals can easily catch Pittsburgh. That's not a major concer.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
I wouldn't say easily. I mean, what's the big surprise Pittsburgh.
We thought we both thought they'd be closer to three
and three than six, and now yeah, no, they've.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
Exceeded all expectations. I don't think anybody expects the Broncos
to hang around.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
Here's what you and I have talked about this, how
mushy the middle of the AFC is the Jets at
three and six are still in the hunt barely. How
about how about can I guess lines real quick? Arizona Jets?
I got to call up okay because I so the
Jets played on Thursday, So the advantage the Jets have
(30:50):
had a couple of scheduling breaks home games on Thursday
night is a big advantage. The Jets have beaten the
Patriots and their last Thursday Day one. Okay, so now
the Jets get extra time. Everybody always laments.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
Go ahead, guess Jets at Arizona?
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Can I guess the line?
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Please? Do?
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Okay? Your look? I would guess the line would be
Arizona minus two and a.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Half, Arizona minus one and a half.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
Okay, give me another one.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Well, you give me the game and I'll give you
the Okay, how about this.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Still?
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Okay? How about Steelers Steelers at Commanders, Okay, hold on,
hold on, that's an interesting one.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
Well, that's a really interesting game. Steelers at the Commanders.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
Steelers off a bye.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
And and Tomlin's a good underdog coach. Washington minus two.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Good, Washington minus two and a half. I think I
like Washington there. Okay, hold on, let's do another one. Oh,
Detroit at Houston. So okay, that's good. So I the
look ahead was four and a half, which we referenced earlier.
That's gone.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
Do you want to guess what it is now? Lions
on the road Sunday night. I think it's gone from
I think four and a half is too tasty. I
think it's down to three and a half.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
Good the Lions minus three.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
I think this the wise guys jumped all over here.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
You have to take Houston, yes, just on principle. Now,
Nico Collins is the name to watch. If he returns,
that offense opens up because you know, frankly, Houston did
not I mean Colin that offense against the Jets. They
don't have dudes, but Joe Mixon could have a big day,
and I don't trust the Lions defense. We'll see coming
off an emotional win over the back.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Just for fun, this game interests me a lot. Dolphins
at the Rams.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Oh, Monday night football.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Oh okay, boy, that's a good one. I'm gonna say
Rams minus two.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Oh geez, nicely done. I see Rams minus two again?
Who do you like in that one?
Speaker 4 (32:47):
Rams?
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Rams?
Speaker 3 (32:50):
But now MS defense is looking good?
Speaker 4 (32:51):
Man?
Speaker 1 (32:51):
They're young, do they? They saw that Aaron Donald retirement
coming and they have been all over defensive lineman.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
They have seven sacks of gems.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
They're all rookies or second you ear.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
Players's the guy who had the pick six.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
I'd literally the third round pick out of Miami safety
pick six. And then they got another safety undrafted out
of the Tennessee. He's got four packs.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
Can you get us in the war room with the
ram sicks just to see what the secret sauce is?
How are they finding all these dudes? They got a
lot of young guys.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
Me into the room, give me one more game to guess. Okay,
how about this?
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Okay? Falcons at the Saints, All right, hold on fire,
Dennis Allen? Who you got? You know, there's like the
firing coach bump. Everybody likes to bet on the team
that just fire their coach.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
I would say Saints are getting.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Three, yeah, exactly, Falcons minus three yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
By the way, Vikings at the Jags.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
Go for it, fire away ten seconds Jags plus two,
Vikings minus four and a half. Wow, that's a big number.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
That's a huge number. See you tomorrow.
