You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
All right, been looking forward to this all day. There's
so many moving parts in college football. We have a
twelve team playoff? Do you coach differently going into a
twelve team playoff when you know if you're in Ohio
State or a Texas you may have four of your
biggest games are at the very end of the season.
Texas Oklahoma move into a different conference. The SEC is
(00:45):
a totally different physical reality than the Big twelve pac
twelve moves Midwest. I don't think they're going to cower
in fear, but I do think it's different football. And
who would know more about a g that was Coach
of the Year. Urban Meyer was eighty three and nine
in the Big ten one Natties down in the SEC
(01:07):
and he joins US live Fox Sports seventeen years Hall
of Fame coach so This is so exciting to me.
I've never been this excited about a college football season
in my life. So, you know, there's a certain brand
that you know it better than anybody. There's Big ten football.
All I hear from Big ten fans is oh, those
poor West Coast teams, and I'm like, slow down. They
(01:29):
they're pretty good out west too. They offered different So
as a Big ten coach and now you have Oregon, Washington, SC,
what would you be concerned about? How would you look
at West Coast teams and say, hey, we're not We
may have to alter recruiting a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
You know, my last two years we played USC and
the Cotton Bowl, and that way we had opportunity to
watch all their film all season long. And then my
final season in eighteen, we played Washington and the Rose
Bowl and so you got a really good feel. And
it's changed a little bit. But the one thing that
I'll tell you about the Pac twelve, and obviously it's disappeared,
and ironically that was arguably the best I think was
(02:09):
the best conference in college football last year and now
it's gone. But the difference between the Pac twelve and
the Big Ten back when I was there and talking
to coaches was the line of scrimmage. The Big Ten
certainly the top half of the league have better offensive
defensive linemen than I saw in the Pac twelve. And
that's as far as skill quarterback play, skilled athletes on defense.
(02:33):
I think you know, certainly the four teams coming in
the Big Ten they have that skill. But the question
I have is will they have the guys up front
to compete at the highest level, because they're going to
jump right in and be one of the top half
of the Big Ten, right, But those teams at the
top of the Big Ten, the offense of the defense
lines are pretty regular.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
So Ohio State's fascinating. I've said they're talented, but I'm
not always sure offensively what they are. So they go
get Chip Kelly and it's funny. UCLA. The baby blue
uniforms make you think they're finesse. Chip loves to run
the ball. Chip would run it seventy times a game
if he could. I think he's sort of the missing elixir.
(03:13):
I think he's the missing piece for this offense, which
in my opinion is prettier than it's ever been, but
I'm not sure it's as physical and as tough as
urban offenses. Give me your thoughts on what Chip does
to Ryan Days offense.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I'll tell you, Colin, this is something for you to
really watch closely. I know we will a big new kickoff.
But Chip Kelly, you know, I've known Chip forever. We're
very close. We spend a lot of time together growing
in the spread offense and his philosophy back in the
day at Oregon as a head coach and as a coordinator,
which go as fast as you can. That evolved when
he went to the NFL, and it's really evolved when
(03:50):
he went to UCLA. He is now the perfect play guy.
He's a guy that's going to huddle, take their time,
and get the perfect play on. That is drastically different
than what he was as a head coach at Oregon.
I'm anxious to see it. You know, I've studied, I've
watched some UCLA film. They are very physical. They do
believe in running the ball. They believe they getting the
quarterback involved. And Will Howard is met I'm meeting when
(04:13):
I was in Columbus. What a great looking guy he is,
and I understand he's really fast and athletic and on videotape.
He looks that way. But this Chip Kelly offense is
completely different than the so called radical offense that he
ran when he was the head coach at Oregon. This
is completely different, and I do believe it's going to
help the house. Date they got the quarterback, I think
that fits this scheme.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
By the way, you'd I think it's remarkable. Big ten
fans may not know this. How many of those UCLA
three star recruits got drafted. UCLA did a really shockingly
good job. USC's recruits got the stars. Chip put more
guys in the pros, and so again he is it's
really I mean, Chip and I have had this conversation.
(04:57):
You can't even believe how many Bruins end up in
the pros and being high on players, So I want
to go to the twelve team playoff. This is now urban.
This is like the NFL. It's a semi NFL structure.
And I do wonder if you would get late in
the year, you're banged up, you've got injuries, you want
to hide some stuff, would you coach a little differently
(05:21):
knowing your toughest four games could be your last four?
Speaker 3 (05:25):
You know, I went out to Utah to watch spring
practice and speak to the team. I went out to Oregon,
Dan Lanny has become a good friend and spent time
with his team, and then I did the spring game.
And obviously I'm close with Ryan Day and I've talked
a couple guys about I don't believe anyone's going into
that mindset. This is uncharted waters for college football coaches.
That a twelve team playoff. I can't. You almost sent
(05:48):
chills down my spine when you said you coached differently
and maybe give away a game. You know, college, you
don't do that. College used to be the BCS two
teams and the playoff four teams, and you can't. You
can't stub your toe. That happened those couple of times
we had one loss and we didn't make the playoffs.
So I don't know. I can't answer that. I don't
think anybody can right now until we get a couple
of years under a belt in the twelve team playoffs.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
So Texas has a great roster. The difference from the
Big twelve to the SEC is, you know, you can
go to Colombia, you can go to Columbia Missouri, and
all of a sudden you got NFL lineman up in
your grill. It's a totally different. I mean, I saw
Georgia go to Missouri like two years ago and get
pushed all over the field for three hours and escape
(06:32):
with a win. I don't think Texas and Oklahoma quite understand.
I think it's easier for PAC twelve teams to go
a little east. I don't think Texas, Oklahoma understand what
it ole. Miss LSU, Florida, Missouri, even a Kentucky you
tell me you were in that. It's like there are
no days off. Even the BAT teams have eighty eight
(06:56):
thousand in their stadium.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah, and and they're budgeted to win a national championship.
I told I got educated at the SEC in two
thousand and five. And when I was at Florida and
we played Tennessee in the swamp, and I looked out
there and there's a big men that. I mean, once again,
a line of everybody's going to have really good skill.
You know, some teams have a lead, but everybody's got
good skill. The difference calling is that damn defensive line
(07:21):
and linebackers. The way they run in the South and
the SEC and the way they take their football. So
there's there. I count eight. Now you had Texas and Oklahoma.
I count ten teams that really they're alumni, they're budgeted,
and their fans expect them to compete for a national title.
And the Big Ten. You know, you got Ohio State
and over Ange, you got Penn State, and now I
(07:42):
put USC in that category. Oregon is getting close. You know,
they played in a couple of national championship games, so
they're very very close. Washington played in a championship game.
They're very close. But until you win that darn thing,
you know, I don't know if you can put them
up there. So I think the SEC is a whole
different level as far as top to bottom. Now, the teams,
(08:03):
the top teams in the Big Ten good as anybody
that proved that last year. The Wolverine team was one
of the best teams in the last ten years. Ohio
State has arguably the best roster in college football. However,
Weekend week out, Texas and Oklahoma. I got respect for
those programs on those coaches, but it's going to be
something they've not experienced.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays,
and noone eas they're not a em Pacific.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
So I said this about Lincoln Riley. I said, go
look at Jim Harbond, Brian Kelly, and Lincoln Riley. Lincoln
Riley was a play from twelve wins his first year.
They took over a four and eight program with about
twenty eight guys that could play, and they were a
play from twelve. But if you watch them, they didn't
look like them. They didn't look like a twelve win team.
(08:45):
Harbaugh took a team from Brady Hope. First year, they
won ten and they had a nice tight end and
they had a couple, you know, but it was a
lot of ham and egg. It was like, they don't
look like Ohio State. I don't care what they'll win
to they don't look like they don't look like Alabama.
Brian Kelly got to an with mantau Tea and I'm like,
I watched the games. I'm like that that's not an
set that it's scheduling and winning close games. And I
(09:08):
said this with Lincoln Riley, they don't look like a
national championship team. That it's so hard to get two
deeps where the backups are just nflers. They're just not
getting you know, they're two years away. I think USC
is going to go in and win about seven eight games.
I don't think they'll beat Penn State. I don't think
they'll beat Notre Dame. I don't think they'll beat LSU.
(09:29):
I think they can win eight. But what's real. Even
with the transfer portal, which everybody thinks that's magic, it
solves everything, Brian Kelly found out you can't build a
culture around a portal overnight. What is reasonable even for
a big brand to be able to go into a
program and have not win ten games a natty roster
(09:51):
that can go toe to toe with Georgia.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
I go back to when I walk on a practice field,
and I use to do this when I was the
head coach, and I'd walk in pregame and I was
so mesmerized by I would just because I was an
offensive coach. I would stare at that defensive line and
I at the end of the day, if you do
not have that, you're not it's not going to happen.
As a matter of fact, I think if you get
exposed in a really good conference without a defensive front,
(10:19):
that's gonna be a really bad year for you. And
I would just the way I was raised, the way
I was raised in this great game. And I do
it now. Whenever I go to games and I'm getting
ready to for Fox broadcast a game, the first thing
I do is I flip on that film and I
stare at that defensive line and if you got the
chase you on Nick Bosat, Joe Bosas, etc. Those kind
of guys that's a things are going to look really
(10:40):
good for you. Look at Georgia over the years, they've
had really good quarterbacks. I mean, that's Stetson Bennett, my godness,
won a national championship. And but you that's not what
want to ask. He's a great player, and he's surrounded
by great players. But at the end of the day,
you have to have those guys on the defensive line.
And I I've coached against USC. I was on the
sideline when they played Utah for the what was a
(11:02):
Pac twelve championship. Yeah, and they did not look I
agree with you, they did not look like it. They
looked like a quarterback and skill. But we all know
what happens when it gets to November. Quarterbacks and the
skill that's not what wins it for you.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
All right, So give me a Give me a surprise
team in the new Big Ten. I know I've got one.
Give give me a surprise team that you've either been
to practice, you know the coach, you don't you know
there's I think Nebraska could be very interesting. Nebraska is
interesting to me. What do you think?
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, you stole my thunder. I got a lot of respects.
People know this. I'm a Nebraska fan. You know, if
I was a player, I'd love to go to Nebraska.
It's that history of the stadium. The fans are incredible.
We coached out there and they've been really down for
several years and always shocked when on the sideline. A
couple of times we played against him, and you know,
you talk about a team that didn't look like a
Nebraska old I just think he's recruited. Well, you know
(11:57):
they got the transfer quarterback that Dylan that is a
really good player. You know, I like their coach. Their
coach knows how to win. He's won at every level.
There's a difference between winning and then winning at every level.
And that's why I got a lot of respect for
Matt Role. So in Nebraska would be my team. They're
not good enough calling to win it, but they're good
(12:18):
enough to make some noise.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
All right. By the way, the summer's almost over. You
gotta have to put the golf clubs away a little bit.
None of this cushy lifestyle nonsense. Are you ready to
put the time in now, coach, You know, I'll tell.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
You it's been cushy, man. I mean it's been I've
been fly fishing a Montana. I've been member guest in Quartelaine, Idaho.
So yes, I'm back in the heat of Florida. I'm
down in my office here and I'm starting to watch film,
but I'm ready to go.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Great seeing you so much fun for me. Thanks so
good to see you. So Urban Meyer. Yeah, I'm I'm
I'm so excited. And to his point, those D lines,
that's what I look at, you know, to USC. You
think I'm a USC homer. But they don't have a
good enough to line. So that's what's gonna They're not
gonna be Notre Dame, not gonna be Penn State. Keep
(13:04):
your eye on the Nebraska game, LSU. No, I do
think they'll beat Michigan maybe, but they just don't have
the defensive front. And I think you can get away
with that in Big twelve, maybe acc a little. You're
not getting away with that in the SEC or the
Big ten. You're just not getting They just don't have
the folks. Jmack with the news.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
No, no, turn on the news. This is the herd
Line News.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
One of your favorite young quarterbacks in the league, Bo
Nicks had an impressive preseason game Hellery, but guess what
what Denver has yet to name a starting quarterback for
Week one, big matchup in Seattle.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
It'll be a tough one. Mike McDonald a defensive.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Guru, if you will, cheers Sean Payton into not rushing
into a final decision at quarterback.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
It's a good group to work with, and I know
the offensive coaches feel that way.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
I feel that way.
Speaker 6 (13:58):
I like where we're at right now, and that's encouraging
for our team. That's encouraging for the team because when
that's unsettled and maybe not as far along then then
there's a lot of things you can do well, and
yet the team sees that there's a there's a ceiling
maybe on what you can do.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
I'm and be careful with that first matchup against McDonald
and Seattle. He's a very good defensive coordinator. They bottled
up some of the best offense.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Rookie quarterback.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Yeah, if I'm bo Nick's like, I'm excited, I'd want
to start obviously, But that that is a difficult draw.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
And then week two against T J.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
Watt, Ti Bowles Eye Jets like that is a tough
schedule to.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
See a lot of October w's for Denver.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
Go ahead, fill me in which ones. I don't see him.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Raiders, We'll give you that.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Saints Morelands can be difficult to You were the one
who just said the Panthers depth charts all of a
sudden rejuvenated.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Well, they're not going to go to Denver and win.
I see another Raider win. They'll beat by Atlanta at home.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Say they'll beat by.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Colts at home at home?
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Five ways?
Speaker 1 (15:11):
I see seven eight wins seven eight.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Oh dear, Let's move on to Matthew Judah.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
The big trade the Patriots made got off the defensive end.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Who I guess he turns thirty two today? Not Land's
with the Falcons. But here's another angle to the story.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Jonathan Jones of CBS reports there is no agreement in
place on a new deal with the Falcons and that
there's no feeling that a deal is imminent. This has
kind of shades of the Hassan Reddick situation. Obviously, you
want to sign Judna. I like the idea that the
Falcons are kind of going all in. I looked at
(15:48):
their pass rush. Atlanta does not have one Grady Jared Thanas.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
They've been looking for a pass rush for years. They've
got the offense solved. They're in good space offensively.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
We think it's.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Hard to have a great old line and not win
games in a bad division. It's hard. I mean Detroit
got that old line suddenly. It was like, oh, the
golf criticism disappeared.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
No, no, stop. Golf has always been better than her cousins.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yes, I agree with that. Yeah, finally you've come around
on that.
Speaker 5 (16:17):
I've been a little late on golf.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
And I feel bad because he's not a neighbor, but
he lives kind of near his I see him in
the super bode.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
You guys do not live close. You can keep telling
the audience you live close.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
You know how many times I've seen him in the
coffee shop downtown. Now I don't say anything.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
I saw Lebron at a coffee shop.
Speaker 5 (16:32):
No, no, he live close, like seven blocks from my house.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Brough.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
We're not neighbors yet he's building a massive manshit. Now
that's super close. You know, well, because you're a mister
real estate.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
All right, final story, Colin, this is the crappy When
Buffalo Bills fans are having a rough morning. All Pro
linebacker Matt Mlano out indefinitely after suffering a torn byseep
this week. He didn't play member last season after Week five,
when he suffered a fractured leg. Just an unlucky stretch
for the talented linebacker. He's excellent coverage. He's basically a leader.
(17:03):
Remember they both their safeties kind of aged out if
you will, and they moved on. Buffalo is four straight
AFCAST titles, five straight seasons with ten or more wins.
I'm telling you the streak is over. The Jets are
winning the division. You and I need some sort of
whether it's a sandwich, bed and alcohol, bet disstake dinner,
whatever you want. The Jets are winning this division. This
(17:25):
Milano loss is massive.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
He's not worth half a point a game.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
No, he's not. But no linebacker in the game is
maybe Lawrence Taylor.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
And Josh Allen Cook too good tight ends James Cook.
He's a nice player.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
He's good, He's very good. We got some stats here
on the Bill's defensive ranks last season without with Milano,
they were elite. Look at all those takeaways and sacks.
Then Milano dips out due to the injury and they
fall back.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Well, he's very, very good player.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
He's excellent.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
He's like Rokwan Smith or Fred Warner. He is a
he is a jump off the television tomorrow, Davis, you
turn a TV on everywhere the great player.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
We need you to get like the five hottest crazy
takes for the potential NFL season.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
I already have one that I cooked up last night.
I'm saving it.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
I'm saving it for when I host. You know when
you're because you're different, we do.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
In the show tomorrow. We are right right, So you
have tomorrow's headlines today tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
Yeah, but that doesn't involve this insane.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
What are you doing tomorrow? What's the what's the what
did you cook up for tomorrow?
Speaker 4 (18:26):
We got some, We got some headline takes that you're
gonna enjoy it as usual.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Okay, Yeah, I don't know if we could top last week.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
That you are just all the charts. Could you were
dying of laughter? Could have been the gum or my
funny jokes.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I didn't do gum today.
Speaker 5 (18:39):
Is that why you're a little lethargic.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
I don't feel great today. I stayed up a little
past oh past your bedtime? Yeah, you know, I'm a gamer,
but i'm I'm I could have gone ir today fifteen
day d L call it.
Speaker 5 (18:53):
I've out.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
I gotta go see this company right after the show.
I'm going to see this new amazing Immerge company in
La I'm so excited.
Speaker 5 (19:03):
Is it located at the airport?
Speaker 4 (19:04):
I mean that would just be two worlds colliding, immersion
and airport.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
You know they're very close to Sofi Stadium.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
Could it be involving the Clippers owner, the billionaire? Nope,
I know you hang with a lot of billionaire. The
Clippers owner was there recently checking it out. Oh look
at the circles you're floating.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Around it now, not circles. I'm just going to the
same parking space that he was in.
Speaker 2 (19:25):

Speaker 1 (20:33):
At Maricio post Chattino is the new coach of the
United States men's national team. Greg Burhalter out not aggressive
enough and so we brought in a Lexi lawless. What
should fans of our lads think about the hire?
Speaker 8 (20:57):
I think when you're looking at this particular higher, I
think it's important to note again he has not coached internationally,
and that's not a problem necessarily. You look at Argentina,
their coach hadn't coached internationally to him obviously, now he's
coaching Messi and Argentina, So this is a different situation.
I think that's where it gets into the interesting conversation
because this coach that you are looking at right here
(21:19):
in his club's success day after day, he is with
these players in an international setting.
Speaker 5 (21:25):
You do not have that.
Speaker 8 (21:26):
Sometimes you have one or two trainings, sometimes you have
hours with these players. And so the detail oriented nature
of Puschettino, which is what he is known for, high pressing,
high fitness, that's all fine and well, but he's going
to have to switch his mind. A very smart man
and a very smart coach, but switch his mind to
be able to impart information very very quickly. I think
(21:49):
that's the big question is in a very short period
of time, not just the less than two years to
the summer, but in a short period time that he's
going to get with these players what is he going
to tell them, because he can't do it day in
and day out, he can't see those building blocks happening
day in and day out. It's got to be raw,
it's got to be ruthless, to your point, and I
think it does have to be, for lack of a
(22:09):
better word, simplified in what he wants to do. And
you can't do what you do in a club situation
with a national team in particular, in this type of situation.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
I think this is very well stated. You've got a
lot to do very quickly, and you don't get the
access to the players that you would a college football
coach taking over a program. So if you were taking
it over and you could give him two pieces of
advice now I'm talking on personnel, not the land mines politically, sure,
and you said, listen, he was flying in for the job,
(22:42):
and you happen to be sitting right next to him.
I imagine it would be in comfort class and you'd
be sitting with him and he said, hey, just give
me two things about personnel, two truths about personnel about
our players. What would they do?
Speaker 8 (22:57):
I think these players not only need, but I think
they want somebody to come in and kick their ass.
I think they want somebody that doesn't suffer fools. I
think they want to be challenged. And while they may
say they want this, in reality, when it happens, it
might be a shock to the system, but it's the
best shock to the system that this players we have.
I don't want to use the word coddled, but we
(23:18):
have given everything to this generation and I'm glad it's
a good thing because I think it's going to produce
better soccer players. But to your point, what you started out,
there also has to be a level of for lack
of a better word, grits and all these different things
that we talk about and have associated with this team.
And I think he can come in and say, you
know what, again, there are no sacred cows. I don't
(23:40):
care what you did before. I don't care how much
money you make. I don't care where you play, I
don't care who your girlfriend is. I don't care how
many followers you have on social media. You need to
be able to do it, and it's a wide open field.
You want that ruthlessness. And Tyler Adams, one of our
good players, has talked about kind of the reality that
Greg Berhaltz certainly at the end kind of gave them
whatever they wanted. And sometimes players do need a kick
(24:02):
in the ass. I think these players need a big
old kick in the ass.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Okay, Geo Reina and Burhalter had a falling out. To me,
I view that as okay, a little bit of a
mutiny behind the scenes. Dad can be involved. Is it
fair to blame Burholt or mishandling that situation or I
mean that from you know, I'm watching and reading stuff.
I'm not with the team, just like NFL, I'm not
(24:27):
in the locker room. That situation was that Burhalter's undoing
because he won almost sixty eight percent of his games?
Was it the Geo Rena situation that undid him?
Speaker 8 (24:37):
No, I don't think the gi Arena is your situation
has anything to do with that. I actually think that
he handled that better than most. Okay, because that got
a lot of pushback. Yeah, but I think ultimately, I
think this comes down to not winning. And so when
it comes to Puschettino, if he is the coach here,
it's going to be down to winning. You know, it's
going to be down He doesn't speak a lot of English,
and he doesn't speak the English that he does speak
isn't great. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But again,
(25:01):
I kind of want somebody that is going to inspire,
and you can inspire in different ways, and I want
that ambassador and that pioneer and that person that is
going to go out there and be in front of everybody,
including the American public, and get.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Us excited about what is coming in twenty twenty six.
So let me ask you one of the knocks on Burholter.
For years and years, I've said we don't play like
Argentina because we don't have those ingredients, right like even
Gordon Ramsey dal Old Bagels has limitations. Okay, So now
I do think our skill level and maybe I'm hyperbolic here,
I do think we have multiple players in Europe flourishing.
(25:35):
I do think it was and this is no affront
to what you provided, but I thought we had to
play with a level of physicality and grit because we
lacked certain things twenty years ago. I don't think we
lack a lot. We may not be Argentina or Spain,
but we can go Tototo and Burholter or the knock
on him at the end was well, he's playing stylistically
(25:57):
like we don't have talent and we should be more aggressive.
Is that a fair criticism?
Speaker 8 (26:02):
That may be a fair criticism, but it should also
be noted. I think what Burhalter wanted when he came
in and what he was at the end were two
different things. I think he was much more of an
idealist when he started and much more pragmatic when he finished.
And maybe to your point, there's a criticism in that,
and that he wasn't ultimately a true believer. He betrayed
his ethos ultimately and it cost him his job. So
(26:23):
if Putchattino comes in, he's gonna have to very very
quickly suss out what this team is and what this
team isn't and.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
What they are as talented and disappointing. So Alexei Laala
stopped by Urban Meyer was money? Greg Bodard came by,
how about the Badard comment two and a half hours ago?
Drake May may not be even as polished as New
England thought, and they knew he was a project.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Hold on, let me ask you this.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
If Drake May was such a project, why was your
guy the tall Sean McVeigh and Minnesota, try like hell
to trade up for him. Smart offensive mind, Drake May,
he's got it. We want and we want and we
want to go up. And the Patriots are like, oh,
I don't know if this guy's any good. Are you
seeing a little bit of a disconnector who do you
trust this new Patriot staff or Kevin O'Connell.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Kevin O'Connell offensively. But my take is, how do we
know that's true that they wanted to be trade up
for him? I heard they want they they could have
they traded up from JJ McCarthy. They could have traded well.
Speaker 5 (27:26):
They would have had to give up the farm. And like,
I don't think you want.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
To give you if Kevin O'Connell thought he had magic.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
They know their GM is very analytically based. They're not
going to get hoodwinked on a trade. I'll say this,
if all of a sudden, Drake, if the Patriots get
the number one pick and Drake May hits the market, like,
we're going to move off him.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
I guarantee you there's some suitors.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Well, I think there would be. I don't think as
many as you think. By the way, here's Greg Badard
who goes to every Patriots practice.
Speaker 9 (27:56):
On Drake may I kind of think the Patriots have
on a disservice not coming out after he was drafted
or early on in the process and saying like, look,
because I went back and I listened to Andy Reid
after they drafted Patrick Mahomes. Of course they had Alex Smith,
who was way better than Jacoby Brissett, and Andy Reid said, look,
(28:17):
he's gonna sit. He's got a lot of work to do.
We need to fix a lot of things. But you know,
it's Alex Smith as the starting quarterback of this team.
And I think if the Patriots came out and laid
those expectations where this is the path that we think
he needs to be on to be the long term
franchise quarterback for this team, I think people would look
at things a little bit differently.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Of the many reasons this is tough for Drake May
is we have proof that offensive coaches are better equipped
to develop raw or rough around the edges young quarterbacks.
Now star goes to any coach Mahomes, Alan Lamar, stars
are stars. But I don't think there's any question that
(29:00):
an offensive coach, generally, if or a defensive coach with
a great OC. The problem is Demiko Ryans has a
great OC. He's gone in two years. He may be
gone outter this year. So the problem is, as a
defensive coach, you have to keep hiring great OC's if
you've got to b quarterback, Whereas an offensive coach can say,
(29:22):
you know, I'll take it from here, and I mean
I've talked to these quarterbacks. I mean, Brady will tell
you Belichick didn't even talk the offensive language. He only
dealt with Josh McDaniels.
Speaker 5 (29:34):
Let me give you a take here.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
How's this So Patriots gets the number one pick, they
circle back, they want him, they're moving off Drake May.
Forty nine ers, we like Rock Party, We're not paying
him fifty five million dollars a year. We will reset
the quarterback room with Drake May, who's on his rookie contract,
and we will move on from Brock Purty.
Speaker 5 (29:53):
How's that for a take.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
Someone eventually is gonna do that. They're not gonna pay
their quarterback and they're gonna go with somebody on rookie deal.
And would the forty nine ers risk? That enables you
to keep all your horses right, You don't have to
worry about moving off debo. He paid Ayuk, They're gonna
pay him, Drake May and San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Well, we've said before that the Niners heart beat is Shanahan, McCaffrey,
Trent Williams, Bosa Kittle. That's the heart beat. Ayuk's talented.
Rock Purty is more than capable, but it's a physical
football team. I do think Brock Purty is a starter
(30:32):
in this league, but he's not a winner to this
level in the league without this coach and this roster.
But he looks like he makes good decisions. I also,
let's see him in a late game sloppy whether you know,
he's very, very lucky where the NFC's best teams are
mild weather or domes.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Wait, you mean like both playoff games against the Packers
and lines. When he had to come back in the
second half to lead his team to victory, Rock Purty
did that?
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Be careful about lee team?
Speaker 5 (31:00):
I know he was at home, but by the way,
how about your guy? Jared got fourteen of his seventeen
games this season ear in a dome, fourteen of seventeen, Like,
that's very favorable for him.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Well, they're favored to being the number two seed, aren't
They might be the number one seed.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
Eagles are Lions, all right.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
I'm gonna go home, hydrate chicken soup, and bring my
A game for tomorrow. I was on my B game,
thank god. Alexi Lawless, Greg Bdard, and Urban Meyer all crushed.
I was like a starter. I got four innings, that's all.
Ye four and a third.
