Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. What is going on everybody, John Middlecoff three
Now podcast? How are we doing? Hopefully everyone's doing well.
(00:21):
Here's the plan for today. We've had podcasts the last
two days. We've had three. Actually, we have one with
Colin after the Sunday games, Sunday afternoon games. I did
a podcast after the Sunday night game for the forty
nine Ers and Falcons. We did another big one yesterday
reacting to the doubleheader last night on Monday Night Football.
(00:42):
So today we're gonna do a big mail bag at
John Middlecoff is the Instagram. Fire into those dms, get
your questions answered right here. So my dms are wide open,
fire in on Instagram, just my name at John Middlecoff,
and we're gonna do a massive mail bag. It's like
our twenty minutes. So buckle up. Wanted to try to
(01:03):
answer a million questions because I have so many that
I'm just it's impossible to get to them all. But
I want you to know I try high effort here,
try to overachieve, but I can't do a seven hour
mail bag. But I did a It's probably one of
the longest ones we've ever done. So that that will
be the game plan in the day. Recorded this on
a Tuesday afternoon, so buckle up and yeah, other than that,
(01:25):
you guys know the drill. Make sure you subscribe. If
you listen on Collin's feed, subscribe to three and Out.
Make sure you do our podcast feed, Apple, Spotify, wherever
you may listen. We got you covered. Obviously, everything we
do is on YouTube, so you can find all this
content on YouTube as well as we go live on
YouTube every single Thursday night, Sunday night, and Monday night,
(01:48):
and then obviously that podcast comes out early the next morning,
so we get that thing turned around. We got a
team full all stars and a bald guy that just
talks into a mic. So that's what we're doing. But
before we dive into anything, here's what I gotta tell
you about my friends, my partners in the official ticketing
app of this podcast, Game time best ticketing app in America.
(02:10):
If I lived in Toronto and I saw these tickets
are not cheap, there's no way I wouldn't attend one
of these games. That place is gonna be bananas. Now
do I like Toronto's chances? I do not. I think
the Dodgers got a gentleman's sweep written all over it.
But go into a World Series game. I've been to
a couple. They're badass. So if you get the opportunity,
if you live in southern California, the NBA, I'm recording
(02:32):
this somehow. The NBA is tipping off October twenty first,
October twenty I remember when I used to tip off
in like early November. They're moving that bad boy up.
If you want to go to a basketball game, college pro, obviously,
football concerts, comedy shows, we got you covered. So take
the guest work out of buying tickets with game Time.
Download the game Time app, create an account, and usico
John for twenty dollars off for his purchase terms of play. Again,
(02:54):
create an account, redeem the code John Joe Chen for
twenty dollars off twn on the game Time app today
last minut tickets, low prices guaranteed. Let's dive into the mailbag. Okay,
didn't realize how much of content of yours that I followed.
I enjoy your fair takes. Not everyone can say that,
but I appreciate you. My question is about da Ball.
(03:14):
I agree the Giant should give him another year, especially
since he isn't a great there's not a great candidate
for head coaching this cycle. My question is do you
think a coach like him, who is volatile and is
in high pressure situations, charging into the medical tent, overly
aggressive sideline actions and interactions is something that can be
changed Chargers Harbaugh is animated, but seems he is far
(03:37):
more controlled. Meanwhile, day Ball looks unhinged and may not
be a good leader for this team. Jim Harbaugh is
also over sixty. I remember him early on in his
forty nine Ers career. He was as volatile, if not
more volatile than Brian Daball. He would like get in
TIFFs with other coaches constantly. He was insane, which was awesome.
(03:59):
Now here's the thing. When you're insane and you're energetic
and you're winning, everyone loves you. Right. Those gifts over
the years of like Kirby Smart and Nick Saban and
Will must Champ kicking everyone's ass are really fun. Well
they're winning national championships. When you start doing that and losing,
it's not as fun. So your personality is your personality, right?
(04:21):
My personality your personality. We're all wired a little bit differently. Obviously,
Brian Day Ball is just an on tilt edgy individual. Now,
I think with age, you definitely chill out. I actually
stumbled upon I was trying to fall asleep after the
podcast on Monday night, and I'm laying there. It's like
eleven forty five. She's asleep, so I don't want to
(04:43):
turn on the TV. So I grab my iPad. I know,
the blue light close to your eye is not good,
but it's like I need something. I cancer on a
light to read a book. Not that I would, but
if I wanted to do, I couldn't anyway. So I
started going to YouTube and I grab my iPad, put
in your phone, and I watched this clip on sixty
minutes Bill Parcells. Somehow the algorithm knows me well from
(05:03):
like two thousand and four, he had just been hired
by the Dallas Cowboys, maybe was after his first year,
and even people were saying like he had chilled out
a lot, and he was like sixty two at the time. Like,
as you age, it's hard to have the same energy
and ferocity that like Nick Saban at seventy years old,
(05:24):
while relative to the rest of human beings is pretty intense,
nowhere near as intense as he probably was at fifty
five years old. It's just it's a natural cycle of
being a human. So yeah, I mean, I think that
the Brian Dabole you're seeing now is the guy you're
getting if you keep him another year and if it
goes well for the foreseeable future. I know the season
(05:47):
is not over yet, but what college quarterback this season
has impressed you the most and do you think could
end up being the number one overall pick? You know,
I don't know if I've seen a guy that I
would feel comfortable drafting number one overall. And I think
think we got to be very very careful about this
because if you could do it over right, the Titans
would take Actually, if the Titans could do it over
(06:07):
what they would do is they take Abdull Carter number one,
and then they would trade into the first round to
get Jackson Dark because you could have had Abduall Carter
and Jackson Dart. Instead they have cam Ward who Again
I'm not jumping off the ship on that, but we
got to call a spade a spade. It hasn't gone well.
So like I think we got to this kind of
(06:28):
situation where the top quarterback had to go really high,
and it's like, this guy's not going to be good
enough to ever live up. Mac Jones is resurrecting his career.
He's mac Jones isn't a first round player in any draft,
let alone this quarterback inflation draft. So I think you've
got to be very careful. Like Ty Simpson is really good.
He's on a stacked team with an elite coaching staff. Right,
(06:51):
I've seen other guys Tua mac Jones have a lot
of success in that program. So like, I couldn't draft
Ty Simpson number one overall. I got a watch Fernando
Mendoza a little bit closely or closer. But I had
a buddy who works in the NFL high up, you know,
like number two executive, was at one of his games
and was really impressed with him. I think it was
(07:12):
the Organ game, and he's like, listen after he threw
that pick six and then for him to bounce back
and lead them on a on a TD drive, like
it was really impressive. Physically, he's got all the skills.
I said, number one overall pick. He said, no, I
couldn't go that eye. And then there's the argument of like, well,
if you think the guy's a starter. Who cares draft
him at number four, draft him at number thirty. It's
all the same. If you think he's going to be
(07:33):
the starter. I'm like, yeah, there's a little more pressure
when you take a guy really high. So like, I
haven't watched South Carolina so shitty. I haven't been dialed
in on sellers who clearly it's not going that well
there nuss Meyer, who have watched a decent amount. I
don't know if he's banged up, but he looks not good.
You know, Pavia is an unreal college player. I don't
know if he's an NFL prospect. Dante Moore Obviously, the
(07:56):
Penn State game was awesome, and then the Indiana game
was kind of a come back to Earth moment. Again.
He doesn't have to come out my overall take. And
I haven't studied every single guy and watched every single snap.
I don't see many guys that I would feel comfortable
drafting in the top ten right now. That doesn't mean
like Jackson Dart, I wouldn't drafted Jackson Dart in the
top ten either, And look at him, he looks like
(08:17):
a very promising like you can find good players in
the twenties in the second round, So I think we
need to get back to that draft other players and
take quarterbacks in the second, third, and fourth round. Russell Wilson,
Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott, brock Perdy like you can find
solid quarterbacks that are almost undervalued, and I think sometimes
you overvalue, so it's like buying an overpriced stock. It's
(08:38):
usually when you get your you know you're asked handed
to you, and I think that's happening a lot with
these quarterbacks. I heard you mentioned a couple of times
with a little disdain in your voice, that Kevin Stefanski
and Brown's GM get passes by the media just for
being ivy league alumps. Does this mean you are an
anti an anti intellectual or is there another reason you
(09:01):
distrust them? By the way, as a Charger fan, I
love your take on Brandon Staley. You know you're either
looking at if you're watching this on YouTube or listening
on the audio. I have multiple degrees. I have an
undergraduate degree, I have a graduate degree. My overall take
is my degrees are from state schools. No one cares
if I was a Syracuse guy or a Northwestern guy
(09:22):
or one of these prominent, you know, media schools, I
would probably be discussed differently with the cool kids in
the media, not that I even want to rub elbows
with these people. Ultimately, my point is the media values
their education really, really highly. If AI does what a
lot of people think it's going to do, it is
going to have a dramatic impact, and to me, negate
(09:44):
a lot of things in academia, especially higher education, right
because like why do I need you? And I'm telling
you right now I can foresee the future on this one.
The media is not going to go quietly on that
because that's gonna almost, i would say, negatively impact something
that's really important to them. And I just see a
(10:06):
lot of these people in traditional media that really value
their degree from their school, which I'm jealous of. Like
I went to cal Poly, I would have a lot
of pride if I was like a Florida alum or
Ohio State of alum or texaslum. You know, with my
athletic programs, I don't have that, so I guess there's
a jealousy to that aspect for me. But when it
(10:26):
comes to the Ivy League, like they're just viewed as
really smart guys and I think the media gives passes
to people, especially in football, when it goes, well he's
a smart guy, it's like, yeah, well he's losing. It's like,
well he's really really smart. He must know something that
we don't because they value education really highly. Right. It
happened with Sam Hinkey for years. It's like the process,
the process fucking blows. The best thing they got out
(10:50):
of it was this seven foot guy who's always injured
and now always complains it's like it did not work.
We have to acknowledge that, you know. And I I
think Sam Hinky is a great example. He's like, well
he's so smart, he's got it. Maybe he doesn't. And
I see it in football all the time, like when
they think you're just a dumb football guy and you
start losing, they destroy you. But Andrew Berry, who again
(11:12):
I have nothing personal against. I'm sure he's a nice guy.
I know people that have worked with him that like him.
I know a lot of people that know Stefanski, really
liked the guy. I think Stefanski's done a good job,
good job given the circumstances. My whole point with their
situation is they were one hundred percent treated differently than
Trent Balke would be in their shoes, because I've seen
Trent Balke lose. Everyone takes a giant dump all over
(11:35):
his entire career. He's like, oh, Andrew Berry's having a
pretty good draft, was team blows. He took two quarterbacks. Now,
if you want to tell me, all of this was
out of his hands, right, But he keeps saying like, well, no,
we did that. And then the Flacco thing, like by
Tomlin just told you he doesn't even feel like they
respect the business. That's what bothers me and where I
(11:57):
get on board with Tomlin the Flacco move, the amount
of little respect you have for it. You have two
rookie quarterbacks. Are either of these guys good? I don't know,
But like Dylan Gabriel and Shador Sanders, just being in
a room with Joe Flacco would benefit them. I don't know.
Flacco's just played in the league for two decades, has
been around countless Hall of famers, has been a Super
(12:19):
Bowl champion, has been a guy that's been benched, has
been a guy that's literally seen it all. Has been
a young player where a lot of people thought was overrated,
has been a good player, that people thought was underrated.
There's nothing that he doesn't check off that could really
benefit every day Dylan Gabriel and Shador Sanders being around,
and good organizations would have valued that well. To me,
(12:40):
the Browns and their GM value things, which I'm pro
stock market I like, I enjoy making financial bets on
things and viewing them unemotionally. But I'm talking about companies,
not actual individuals on a football team, and that's how
I feel he approaches it. And it was just embarrassing.
And they do a lot of embarrassing things. And I've
(13:02):
given them a pass for the Deshaun Watson thing because
it's like pretty clearly on the owner, even though they
they're outspoken of like we did it, we did it.
I just think that they get they get treated differently
than other people who have the same results that are
viewed as just football mediads. That's my overall point with
(13:22):
the take of the Ivy League thing, because if Andrew
Berry was just he had gone to San Diego State,
I don't think the coverage would be the same. That
is the overall gist of my take on this situation.
I also don't value like I mean, I was around
growing up some multimillion dollar farmers that didn't graduate high school.
(13:45):
So it's like I come from a world where and
listen again, I got a graduate degree, so it's like
my parents pushed education. I'm not anti education. I also
think it can be extremely overrated, and having worked in
a field now around a lot of people with traditional
media backgrounds, I'd say we look at it a little
(14:05):
bit differently. I would say that's fair, but like I
don't besmirch, if that's the correct word, those guys for
going to the Ivy League. But I don't think it's
really debatable that they get treated differently, and specifically the
GM that if we just take another franchise with their record,
(14:29):
they would get absolutely dumped on. As a Bears fan,
I'm not used to getting a lot of media coverage
because there haven't been many bright spots in years past. However,
people are quick to hype up teams like the Chargers
and the Packers even though they have clear weaknesses. Obviously,
Caleb and Ben are still working things out. But curious
as to how you see the Bears even though we
(14:50):
have played great teams. We are fourign two and the
defense is looking great. I would say The difference is
the Chargers have Jim Harbough who's been winning for almost
two decades now in every football team that he ran, right,
And I would say the same thing for the Packers.
They've been winning for three decades. Last year they had
a down season, they made the playoffs. The year before
(15:13):
they won a road playoff game with the same coach
and the same quarterback. So it's like, you get the
benefit of doubt. It's why whenever I see these people
that like wish Josh Allen sucked, it's like, when are
people gonna when are people gonna criticize his performance last night? Like, yeah,
he had a bad game. Have you been watching him
for six years? He's a fucking dominant player. Right. I'd
(15:33):
say the same thing for Lamar, Like the only way
you can criticize Lamar is like when he struggles in
the playoffs, Like, I'm not crushing him for a bad
regular season game. Who cares? Right? There are certain players
that are on a level of like Jamar Chase can
have a bad regular season game. It's football. It happens,
but it doesn't diminish his his like status in the league.
(15:56):
And other guys like on a weekly basis we're judging
Kayleb Williams, you know, And I honestly thought, like, obviously,
last week, their defense was remarkable. They made Spence Rattler
look like a UFL quarterback. DeAndre Swift has looked sweet.
I thought Caleb did not look good. And it's really hard. Now,
if your defense is gonna be awesome and your running
game is gonna be awesome, you can get by with
an average quarterback. But I do believe that it's difficult
(16:20):
to just sustain winning once you played better teams, right
once you play the Lions and play the Packers. If
Caleb's gonna he was just running around constantly, it was
just like it was kind of bizarre. But they were
kicking ass and they win the game pretty easily, and
no one talks about it. But it was one thing
I saw. It's like, well, it's not like I would
feel a lot better about this team if he looked
(16:42):
good operating for Ben. I just don't think he really
has nook. If you hate Caleb Williams, no, I don't
have care about Kleb Williams at all. I wish he
was an awesome player. I wish all these quarterbacks were
awesome players. I would rather watch good quarterbacks. I literally
watched football for a living than shitty ones like we
gotta watch Carson Wentz on Thursday night, not really looking
(17:03):
forward to that as a Cowboy fan. I was wondering
your thoughts were on their position over the next two years. Obviously,
their defense is too bad in order to be competitive team,
but considering four first round picks along with the other picks,
I think they could have a shot at making a
great roster. Also, I hate Jerry Jones, but he usually
does well in the draft historically. Do you think they
(17:24):
can make an NFC championship for the first time since
the nineties in the next two or three years? Well,
how old is old Dakota Prescott? I'm pretty sure I'm
gonna guess thirty three. Dakota Prescott is thirty two. Just
turn thirty two this summer. So modern medicine, health training,
(17:47):
no reason he can't be a really good player at
thirty three, at thirty four, at thirty five, at thirty
like for the next three or four years. Look at
the forty nine ers. They transitioned off a bunch of
defensive guys and they drafted a defensive lineman a defense
tackle with their first two picks this year. Both guys
play a lot, and the defenses look pretty good. And
are they gonna be like Micah Parsons Nick Bosa level players.
(18:08):
Probably not, But can they be solid starters on a
good defense? Looks like it. So I think you just
approach it like you're going into the draft drafting defensive players,
whether it's the best corner, whether it's the best you know,
if you can find a Roquan Smith, whether you can
find a defensive tackle or a defensive end, and you
just keep picking defensive players. Right, You've invested heavily in
(18:31):
the offense. You've drafted a bunch of offensive linemen. You
paid the quarterback, you paid Ceedee Lamb, you paid Ferguson.
I would imagine you're gonna pay George Pickens. If they don't,
that would be a pretty big red flag. And to me,
it's just about investing in the defensive line. If you
told me their first two picks this draft in the
first round, let's say they use them both pick Let's
(18:53):
say the Cowboys end up going like eight, eight to
one and the Green Bay Packers, you know, are picked
twenty five. So you get picked twenty and twenty five
and they picked two defensive linemen. I don't think anyone
would quibble with that. But you can't just be like, oh,
just I kind of like this Jeremiah Love. In fairness,
Jremia Love would be pretty sweet on their team, but
(19:15):
you got to take defensive lineman. You have to question
for the next show. USC fan starting to feel a
little discouraged with Lincoln Riley as a coach, particularly play calling.
Am I right to feel like we can get more
out of him? I think at this point in time,
he kind of is what it is, you know, I
think you can recruit better. One thing that he had
(19:35):
at Oklahoma was their team was stacked. They had NFL
offensive lineman, they had NFL running backs, they had NFL
wide receivers, they had an NFL quarterback, they had NFL
tight end. I mean some of those teams he coached
before he came to USC were I mean, offensively, were
Mark Andrew Ceedee, Lamb, Hollywood Brown, mix in p Ryan,
(19:57):
Orlando Brown, I think Creed Humphrey, right, Baker Mayfield. Kyler
Murray's the backup on this. Like he was like, like,
we have a Kyle Lemon, Like, yeah, Lincoln used to
have about seven of those. So I think you just
got to keep recruiting. Notre Dame's in a better spot
and built up better than Notre Dame right now, or
(20:17):
than USC now, I completely disagree. You know, Coward goes
on this rant of this this game needs to stop.
You watch that game. It's like, no, this game does
not need to stop. They need to play it every
single year. Now I get USC is like, well we
still have to play Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Washington. It's
(20:37):
like they get to pick and choose their own schedule.
It's like, well, Notre Dame, let's just let's come on
to the Big Ten, which feels inevitable as these conferences
continue to consolidate. But watching that game at night in
the cold, I mean, that's not really going to be
a Lincoln's deal, right, I mean, I would say most
of the time, and listen, part of playing in the
Big Ten, you're gonna play in some games in October
(20:58):
and November on the road at night, like it might
not be the greatest weather. I would say, you know,
Lincoln Riley's teams are kind of built for sunshine and
scoring some points when it's going perfectly well, but does
he know defense well enough? He has a GM that
he hired from Notre Dame. I actually just started following
him on Instagram, like last week, Chad Bowden, I think
(21:19):
his name is. I read this La Times article. I
sent him a DM. I'm like, you know, I read
this article. Just your story is pretty cool, just how
he kind of came up at Cincinnati and a freeman
Notre Dame, how most people didn't think the GM was
would leave and all of a sudden he tells him like,
I'm going to USC. I think I think he's originally
from LA His dad is. I think former GM. I
(21:44):
think of the Cincinnati Reds. Grew up with the Collinsworth family.
Cool story and clearly, I mean really some of the
quotes from the Notre Dame coaching staff like really really
high thought, highly thought of. And that's the one thing
that's different now in college football, Like Lincoln, you coached
the team like I just came from Notre Dame. Like
let me pick some of the players, you know, let
me help isolate these are the type guys we need
(22:07):
because sometimes coaches, let's face it, like most guys aren't
Nick Saban. Most guys aren't Urban Meyer. A lot of
coaches are bad evaluators. Today's show is brought to you

gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. Based
on what McDaniel said at his last presser, basically throwing
(23:55):
TUA under the bus for being so bad, where's the
GM and the owner not stepping in on the state
of affairs for the organization for something like this If
they're not gonna let McDaniel go yet, there's yet that's fair.
But shouldn't someone say something to address this dumpster fire?
Hot take? Why do we need to address every dumpster fire?
(24:16):
You know, I don't quite get it, Like sometimes things
go bad right in sports, and you see it in
college football all the time. It's like, I didn't need
Florida state's ad or president or Wisconsin's ad or president
to give me a statement if you're not gonna do anything,
like yeah, we get it, you suck. They're always like
the standard is not good enough, but we're still evaluating,
(24:38):
like yeah, no shit, so were we all like it?
Why do we need these statements for optics? There's not
a word that I hate more than optics. I like results,
I like reality. To post something like Stephen Ross comes
out with a statement, what's he gonna say? If you're
not firing anybody, no one gives a shit, So yeah,
(25:00):
you just kind of let this situation go. One thing
I was maybe I'll talk about tomorrow, maybe I won't
is they must have his owners meetings going on right now,
because I saw Woody Johnson gave gave he was being
interviewed and said like basically got Aaron Glenn's back of saying, well,
what's he supposed to do? Our quarterback can't complete a pass?
(25:22):
And literally everyone on social media, everyone in the media
universally is like, Godfield sucks. This guy's one of the
worst quarterbacks I've ever seen. Woody Johnson then says the
same thing and everyone's like asshole. You can't say that.
Why not? What's he supposed to say? You know, Justin
Fields is coming along. No, he feels like they just
robbed us. Now, if you want to say, hey, Woody,
(25:44):
you just let the coach and GM give him that contract.
That's insane, Like my mother could have told you, like
he struggles from the pocket, not a great thrower. Just
got bench for Russell Wilson, who's like on Twitter talking
shit about Sean Payton's Like, Russell, listen, I'm not saying
Sean Payton has the highest approval rating with everybody, But
(26:04):
you definitely don't like I just I just let by
guns be by guns. You got paid to leave. You
guys hate each other. He definitely hates you. You know,
you pretend that you love everybody. But I just like
it's not necessary. And I would say the same thing
about these statements, like what, I just don't know what
Stephen Rosster, the GM is gonna say. There's literally nothing
they can say to make anything better unless they say
(26:26):
we're gonna fire Mike and at the end of the
season we're gonna cut to a then people would be happy,
but that's they're not gonna say that a few weeks ago,
you mentioned taking one of those blood food allergy tests,
was wondering if something they found was useful and you
would recommend doing It's a little overwhelming, I would say,
I found out I'm lactose. You know, I can't have dairy.
(26:51):
I'm not supposed to have dairy, and gluten not ideal
for me. So it's like, wait, literally everything I eat
now listen, Like, as you get older, you try to
avoid the carbs, but I think you kind of got
to be realistic about it now. Some of them. It's like,
I'm severely allergic to shallots. You know. It's like, uh,
probably should pick and choose when I eat avocado stuff
(27:15):
like that. But just yeah, you should probably not eat
dairy or gluten. Uh, that's can be a little overwhelming.
It's like, well, so I don't get to put cheese
on anything. I don't. I don't put sour cream on
my chipole bowls anymore. But it also like, yeah, I
got a milk And I would say dairy products has
always been a little hit or miss, I would say
with my stomach. But the uh, the gluten one, that's
(27:40):
that hits deep. Man. I love I love a good bagel, sandwich.
I love pizza, love pasta. But it's like I gotta choose.
Do I want to be a fat ass inflamed, swollen,
you know, guy with low energy, or do I want
to be vibrant and skinny. So we'll see if just
start in this journey, I don't know how it's gonna go.
(28:03):
But that was Yeah, that's a lot, I'll tell you
that much. It's no secret that you're not a fan
of the Falcons, But what is it about them that
makes you hate them? To me, they're no different than
any middling franchise. It's funny. It's like, I promise you this.
I don't hate anybody. I really don't. My life's too
(28:24):
good to hate. I remove that from my go to emotions.
It's a waste of my energy. And I don't know
any of these people personally. Now, I would say my
take on the Falcons is twofold. I think their owners
kind of douchey, and not because I like hate rich people.
This is pro capitalism show here, so good for him.
(28:46):
I'm glad that he had successful business career. We celebrate
that here. Honestly I admire it, but like put himself
in the Hall of Fame last year. Whenever he talks,
this is about him. He's a little much for me. Now,
you could argue a lot of owners are like that. True,
I do. I think they carry themselves like they're a
little more successful than not. And I do think two
years ago when they got rid of Arthur Smith and
(29:09):
what's his name, his president, this also like runs his
his will. I can't even think of his name now.
And obviously the GM you know, clearly they made the
right decision by not hiring Bill Belichick, but they also
acted like they knew what they were doing and it
was all Arthur Smith's fault. Where again I don't know
Arthur Smith personally either. One night had some beers with
(29:30):
him years ago at the Combine. But anytime that like
an organization just points the finger at one person and
the people picking the players and kind of running the organization,
or like it's that idiot, not me, and then that
guy leaves and the same shit just continues to happen.
It's like, now, you guys are kind of fraudulent, and listen,
this league can there's so much money in the line.
(29:53):
Everyone wants to get their hand in the piggy Bank,
but I just something about it. I'm with you. They
are not like that bad. They're not the Jets or
the Raiders. Their stadiums cool, but like and listen. Raheem
Morris is universally liked by everyone that I respect, you know,
in the business from the Shanahan Tree. I mean, Sean
(30:14):
McVay and Kyle Shanahan love the guy, so like, I
have nothing against him, but I think we have to
acknowledge like you acted like Arthur Smith was an idiot.
Hired this guy and it's been a debacle. I mean
there was I saw the clip I'm sure you did
too if you're a Falcon fan of him being asked
after the game about the ten men on the field
on the big third down. I mean, that's this is
(30:37):
this isn't four games into his career. I mean, he's
been there now a year and a half. It's pretty embarrassing.
I just think they're the way they carry themselves and
talk and the outcome are just two different operations, you know,
And I feel like they tried to not get treated
(30:59):
like some of these other organizations that lose a lot.
And it sure feels like since Matt Ryan fell off
a Cliff. They've been losing a lot and kind of
some embarrassing losses. I mean this year, think about it.
They just lost to the forty nine ers with their
second stringers, and they've gotten blown out by the Carolina Panthers.
I just have a hard time. I think sometimes in
(31:21):
the football business, when like no one ever wants to
take responsibility, they always want to point the finger at
someone else. And I'm talking more like in the front
office than you know. Coaches will backstab each other too,
but if you're the offensive coordinator, your offense sucks, it's
hard to hide, right. But with the GM's like, well,
he wanted that player, he wanted that quarterback. You know,
I didn't hire the coach, the GM wanted him. If
(31:43):
I'm the president, I just think that happens a lot,
you know. And the Bruce Allen types. Who's with Washington forever?
I'm trying to think the Atlanta Falcons president. Why can't
I get his name? That's not who I'm looking for.
(32:04):
Rich McKay. There's just any organization that has the Rich
McKay types. I'm just out on. And I don't take
that seriously because he wants credit if it went well,
he'd be front and center, but when it doesn't go well,
I just run the Arthur Smith, the billion dollar will,
like I'm just here to kind of support everybody. The
(32:24):
Kevin Warren types. It's like, you guys are just I
can't stand people like that. When I was with the Eagles,
it was Joe Banner. It's like they want the credit,
but when shit goes bad, they want to stab everyone
in the back. There's the league, and honestly, big business
is full of those type people. It's like they don't
own it. They're not really in charge, but they run
(32:46):
like a power playing role. I would always red flag
organizations with those human beings as a Ravens fan, wouldn't
it be a blessing in disguise if the Ravens were
truly to be this year's team from hell? What does
going nine to eight or ten and seven and beating
up on Slumpbusters and losing in the divisional championship round? Do?
(33:07):
I get it? It's a loser mindset to tank for
the rest of the year, but you already are one
in five and making the playoffs would just be Lamar
saving Harbaugh's ass for a second time. Not to mention
that you would not have a top pick in each
of the rounds in a stacked edge class, and we
have had a revolving door of geriatric players on the
(33:29):
edge DN position since Suggs left. It also gives you
a chance to move off some of these big contracts
like Linderbaum and some other young players do to be
paid soon. To me, it's like in the next couple weeks,
if you rattle off a couple victories and look completely different,
it's football. You should try to me if you like,
(33:51):
if the Bears beat you coming off a bye, it's
over and it makes way more sense to be a
four or five win team and have the tenth pick
than it does to end up was eight or nine wins.
So I'm completely with you the hardball thing. It's like,
let's just play it out. You win five games this year,
because it's like, oh, Lamar's coming back in theory, I mean,
didn't mispractice yesterday, but Lamar was there when they were losing,
(34:14):
Like it's the defense was horrendous. I mean, their issues are.
Lamar was already kind of running around trying to make
things happen, and it didn't matter. They were getting blown out.
I think through four games, didn't they have like one
of the highest scoring defenses in the history of the league.
I think they gave up more points through four or
five games than anyone in the league history. So I
(34:37):
have a hard time seeing them. So the six games,
so it would be eleven. So to get to ten wins,
you'd have to go ten and one, or I guess
that'd be eleven wins. You have to go. You'd have
to go nine and two, Like I don't know, I
don't see that. That'd be go ten and seven. To
go nine and eight, you'd have to go eight and three.
(35:00):
Like the team we saw is gonna go eight and three. Now,
I think we talk about them like what they've been,
but what they've been is not what we saw this year.
I'm with you, I'm anti tanking, but like, once you
start like two to eight and you have like your quarterback, Yeah,
I don't think it's the worst thing to lose some
games to get a higher pick, especially like historically guys
(35:22):
are drafted well and you never draft high. Imagine if
you had like the seventh overall pick, what's going on?
John Love the pot was wondering if you could break
down the team behind you a bit and if you're
looking to possibly expand we got a big team. We
got a great team. We got a lot of people
on this and you know, the volume. Very lucky to
(35:46):
have a lot of people this. I know a lot
of you just hear or see me, but all I
do is talk into a microphone.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
You know. It starts with We've had a couple main
producers over the years. James who actually just officially left
because he's on Joe and Jada. He lives in Jersey
and that that podcast like a rocket ship. I was
actually with him in New York, so for a long
time he did all the video. And now Shane, who
(36:14):
has been with us. I don't know, it feels like
a year. It might be less than that, at least
with my show specifically. So anything that you see video
wise of like our live streams, are the ads that
are you know, implemented in there to me just telling me,
you know, kind of running the business behind the scenes
(36:36):
of when ads need to be read this is this week,
Hey we need to do this. You know, I'm very
dependent on those people to feed me information and then
they're tied in with like Josh, I call him Goldie,
who is kind of like I think his term is
technically the GM, Like he runs Collins podcast and then
(36:57):
he oversees a couple other ones. So it's like call
it kind of all under his umbrella, and we just
kind of now we're kind of a self sufficient operation here.
But from James to now Shane to Adam who runs
the audio, who makes me sound better, and he echo
(37:18):
in my room. He's loading audio for countless different you know,
different podcasts on the network. But also like you know,
I screw up. There are things that that maybe if
someone rings the doorbell and I leave, like things that
get edited out that I don't have to mess with.
So from an editing standpoint, I do nothing. You know,
(37:40):
I'm very dependent on Adam and Shane, and then you
know Jackson and Noah. You know Jackson, you know intern
Jackson and Noah who you don't know, but I think
I've talked about him before. He was the one feeding
me the Baker Mayfield twenty five to one for MVP.
You got Jackson playing football at Montana, a little walk
on status slow white. I think slot receiver, maybe try
(38:04):
to play outside. You know, it's like six or five
shooting guard. I think he played it like Ducaine. So
we got some athletes behind the scene and they just
crush it on the social media stuff. So listen, I've
been in this podcast business and I try to do
a lot of this stuff myself when I had a
previous show with my buddy guy, and it's it's hard,
(38:24):
and it's it's impossible, and I am very, very lucky
that this operation, you know, Rand but Logan kind of
runs the the content aspect for all the volume, but
has introduced me to these guys and got them on
my team, and it's been it's been good for everybody,
(38:45):
and it's we've got a cool group and just again
they just like sports, which helps. So it's like I've
been very I've been very fortunate to work with normal,
good talented people because again, and I could talk into
a mic seven hours a day, and if I wasn't
associated with colin the volume, you wouldn't know I'd existed.
(39:08):
But from the social clips, to the videos, to the
audio getting cut and loaded. So when you get in
your car now at seven am in New York and
you're commuting, I had nothing to do with that, So
I can't. I mean, I hope they know how much
I appreciate everything they're doing behind the scenes and how
(39:29):
talented and good all these guys are because they're fucking
ass kickers. I know you talk about this often, but
do you think any sources or people that can explain
how these gms get taken to school by agents? In
what world would Tua, Lawrence Kyler Purdy all worth the
contracts they were given. You always say who are you
bidding against? But seriously, who are they bidding against? How
(39:50):
does this happen? It seems like an absolute malpractice that
this is setting franchises back constantly. Is it agents trying
to get their breaks or trying to get their beaks wet?
Even if it is, how are the gms and owners
willingly letting this happen? It makes zero logical sense. Even Dak,
who is a good quarterback, is he worth sixty million
dollars a year? I get having an average quarterback is
(40:14):
better than nothing. Dak actually has played pretty good right now.
I mean, he looks like one of the best quarterbacks
in the league. I don't know, man, I think I
think you would really have to sit down with, like,
you know, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, Trent Balkey, some of
these guys over cocktails and because again we can all guess,
(40:36):
like why did you give Trevor Lawrence two hundred million dollars?
Like I like brock Purty a lot. I actually think
he took a relatively team friendly deal based on the
other deals. But it's like, Guys, he's played, he's been
the starter for two and a half years, Like, couldn't
we just play it out again? Well, then franchise tick. Well,
it's like, let's just keep proving it. That's the way
most of us work. It's what he's a quarterback? Well
(40:59):
is he Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar No, then let's
just let it play out. And I'm not trying like
party had proven that he could win, but then last
year they had a bunch of injuries. They won six games,
and he didn't play that well down the stretch, and
now he's injured in the team's winning. So it's like,
and I'm not I'm more pro perty than I am
Trevor Lawrence, Kyler or Tua. But my first reaction will
(41:21):
always be as like, what's the rush? Why are we rushing?
Like I get the Packers giving Michah Parsons one hundred
and eighty eight million dollars, totally. I get the Cowboys
giving Ceedee Lamb or Jamar Chase two hundred million dollars,
totally get it right. But if like I have a
guy that's not elite at his job, and that's also
the problem. Like I'll use Kyle as an example, Kyle.
(41:46):
Kyle views brought purty like an elite. Like Kyle would
tell you he's every bit as good or I can
be every bit as good with him as like Patrick
Mahomes is with Andy Reid, even if that's like not
actually true. I generally believe that he believes. So it's like, yeah,
I'll give him my guy a max amount of money.
But then you see Sam Darnald, who makes got like
(42:08):
fifty five million dollars guaranteed. I mean, just watch it me.
He looks like one of the better quarterbacks in the league.
It's like, I can get that guy for a third
of the price when I just want that guy. I
will say this, if I was a quarterback in my
career had hit some hard times and I was going
to be a quote unquote backup, I would call. The
(42:28):
first people I would call it would be the forty
nine ers because they are resurrecting careers, Sam Donald mac Jones, Uh,
they created brock Perty's career. I mean, Kyle Shanahan would
be my first call. I want in. That's what I
would say. If mac Jones' biggest regret he signed a
two year contract. Imagine if mac Jones had just signed
(42:49):
a one year contract, what would he get this offseason?
Like one year, twenty million bucks? Probably he would definitely
get the most amount of money for a bridge quarterback.
How much of the Packers just looking weird on offenses?
On the floor just seems like Green Bay is not
getting consistent results on offense. Lafloor just seems like he
(43:10):
coaches not to lose. I don't know. I mean, I
don't I don't get why. There's like a lack of
trust in Jordan Love and you can argue that he
makes some poor decisions every once in a while. You know,
Jacobs definitely doesn't feel quite as dominant this year as
he did last year. But if I remember correctly, didn't
(43:30):
he start slow last year too? I don't know something
Just you watch the Packers hard For me? To put
my finger on again. I liked him to. I got
a bet on them to win the NFC. I got
multiple bets on them that aren't gonna hit because they're
also tied to the Texans to win the division, which
I don't even feel that great about. But you watch them,
(43:50):
something just a little off. Something's just a little off,
you know. Looking at Jacobs right now, he's had a
couple of eighty yard games. He said, three eighty yard games,
got eight touchdowns this year. He actually scoring a lot
of touchdowns, but shit, he had fifteen last year. He's
been a monster for the Packers. Actually, in between last
(44:13):
year and this year, these are just rushing touchdowns. He
has twenty three rushing touchdowns. I mean, if I get
thirty touchdowns from a guy like Jacob's ain't a problem.
I don't know. It's a great question. I don't you
know better than me. I can't put my finger on
the Packers. Befuddled? Can I tell you about my friends
(44:41):
at Bub's Natural. I've been taking a scoop of this
every day for the last couple of weeks, and getting
old isn't that fun? You know, your skin gets thinner,
your body aches more, after workouts. It's tough, and that's
why you need to do everything possible to work against that.
And taking a scoop of this in the morning, getting
my collagen peptides. I've noticed one. I feel like my
(45:04):
skin is definitely glowing more and from a workout standpoint,
my body feels as fresh as it's felt in years.
No sugars, no sweeteners, unflavored from grass fed, pasteurized raised cattle.
Cannot recommend this stuff enough again, skin glowing, body feels good,
(45:27):
live longer. For a limited time only, our listeners get
twenty percent off at Bubb's Natural by using the code
three and out at checkout. Just head to bubs Natural
dot com and use the code number three and out
anywhere else set after the purchase, tell them we sent you,
and have a great day. I gotta get your perspective
(45:55):
on this. Would the openings at Penn State and Florida
be considered better opportunities for Lane Kiffin or should he
stay at Ole Miss. I think Lane Kiffin's a big
Florida guy by all accounts. I've listened to a lot
of you know, college football people talk about the podcast.
I think he's got a house there Obviously, his dad
is synonymous with the State Tampa two defense coach. There
forever Lane resurrected his career, I would say, post Alabama
(46:17):
as a head coach, at was it NAU. I get
some of those schools and I you and I Northern FAU,
and I guess it wouldn't be NAU, would be FAU,
Florida Atlantic University, whatever school a Lank coached at. I
just think that you know there is and I said
(46:38):
this before you're gonna find out there is just a
prestige coaching at certain jobs. But one thing I noticed
last weekend, the SEC has the best home environments. I mean,
Auburn is in shambles. They have had back to back
night games that looked as good as any football environment
(46:59):
there is. Ryan Grubb, the Bama offensive coordinator, said, I've
been coaching for a long time. I've won, you know,
Division two national champions one Double A national championships. I've
coached in the National championship game at Washington. I've played
in massive games against Oregon. He's like, that was the
best atmosphere I've ever seen by a country mile. Vanderbilt,
(47:22):
which is used to being also ran that game against
LSU was rocking and did Georgia ole Miss game ole
Miss's stadium. I mean, these these atmospheres are pretty sweet,
so it's like, yeah, Florida's an awesome atmosphere, but Lane
plays in the sweet place. So I think it's more
about like, at this point in time, Lane's super rich.
So it's not like he already makes ten million dollars
(47:44):
a year whether they give him fifty to eighty million dollars,
He's already like not worrying about money, So it's less
about money and more like would he rather live in
Gainesville than live in Oxford, Mississippi? Does he think that
the prox city it's it's closer for him to recruit
some top players? Does that even matter now? And like
(48:07):
ultimately does he want the challenge? Like has he done
everything humanly possible he can do at ole Miss? I
I don't believe Penn State makes much sense for him
because he's he's a rock star in the SEC and
Lane Kiffen feels like an SEC guy. And you saw
that interaction he had pregame and postgame with Kirby, like
he kind of I think he's found his people, and
(48:30):
I think that's a I think that's really important in life,
finding your people. I feel very I've lived in a
lot of places, spent a lot of time. Obviously born,
raised in California, but I've lived for a couple of
years in Philadelphia, i lived for six months in Kansas City.
I've lived in you know, from the Bay Area to
Fresno to you know, the coast in San Luis Obispo. Like,
(48:50):
I've been around a lot of different types of people,
because everywhere you live, people are wired a little bit different. Right,
We're all quote unquote Americans, But like, living in Florida
is a lot different than living in Seattle than living
in New York City. And I think once you find
like these are my typic Like I just vibe with Arizona.
It's just it's just my vibe, it works like I
(49:11):
fucking belong here. And I think that really matters when
you are professionally ambitious. So it's like, because he still
has a lot to accomplish, that old miss. If these
are his people and he fits in well, and he's
openly talked about how important coaching there has been to
his life, then yeah, stay. But if you feel that
(49:32):
you're more Florida than you are Mississippi, then go I
think it's about much more personal stuff than it is professionally,
because like Ole Miss pays a ton Ole Miss has.
I think they had one of the the highest payrolls
in the country last year with their roster, So it's
not like they won't pay for the players. He can
obviously pay coaches. He plays against the best teams Georgia, Bama, LSU,
(49:58):
like he's playing them all every year, so it's not
like he needs to go to Florida to play better competition.
It's just about, like you want to live somewhere different.
I really think it's that simple, because at this point
in time ten years ago, it's a no brainer. Now
it might not be to me. Penn State makes no
sense for Lang Kivin wouldn't touch that job. With a
ten football with quarterbacks getting second and third chances, where
(50:19):
can mac Jones be traded to with a chance to
be a starter next year. I just don't think the
forty nine ers can afford to trade him. I mean,
their starting quarterback now has had a major shoulder injury
or I guess elbow injury. That they were lucky it
was the NFC championship game or if that happens during
the season, would have cost him the year he got
(50:40):
banged up? Was it last year? I forget the exact
injury off the top of my head. And obviously now
he can't play games. Kyle Shanahan just said yesterday like
he ain't playing this week. So mac Jones like part
of having life insurance plan, especially those of us if
you're listening with children, like who knows what if I
cross the street and a truck hits me and I die?
(51:02):
You never know? Do you think the forty nine ers
plan when they gave brock Purty all that money for
brock Purty to miss all these games? Of course not,
but they had a contingency plan and that's was their insurance.
Was mac Jones? So and then he has a bunch
of success. The other thing is I think his contract
was like two years, seven million dollars total. I think
(51:23):
mac Jones's borderline untradeable for this team. Resurgence of quarterbacks
like Daniel Jones and mac Jones and the longer term
rebounds from guys like Baker and Sam do you think
teams might start taking more chances on formally quote unquote
BUS quarterbacks instead of spending draft capital on rookies. Since
(51:43):
twenty eighteen, roughly a third of the quarterbacks once labeled
BUS have managed to turn their careers around. Could smart,
well run teams start viewing that as a more efficient
or higher probability move than drafting a first quarterback. I
think it's already happening. Like, look at all these quarterbacks
that end up on different teams. They've all been given
(52:04):
other shots. Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Mac Jones,
Sam Donald, Baker Mayfield, Like they bounced around to other
teams before they ended up where they're at now. So
the thing when you're drafted high, you're always given constant opportunities.
I think Sam Donald, you know, after being a backup
for the Niners, was given one year as ten million
(52:25):
dollars based on not much. Now he's changed the course
of his career in Minnesota. But like you could argue, like, wait,
well you're give him ten million dollars for what? But
that's because he was a high draft pick. You get
more opportunities. You know. The NFL is a meritocracy. That
is true. Right once training camp starts, once the game start,
(52:46):
you can be the thirtieth pick. If the undrafted free
agent is out playing you, he is going to start
in you or not, period, point blank, end of story.
But if that undrafted free agent plays and he sucks,
he is not gonna get the same amount of opportunities
around the league as the second or first rounder if
he sucks, because you can cut that guy. And I
(53:09):
mean you see it with the receivers all the time,
like Dante Pettis, forty nine ers drafted high and he's
been on like sevent teams since. If Dante Pettis had
been an undrafted free agent instead of a guy drafted
in the second round, he's not getting the same amount
of opportunities. So I think that I think that's always
been the case. It's pretty rare for a guy drafted
(53:33):
really high to not get I mean, you gotta be
an all time disaster for no one to touch you.
When do we start talking about Matt Safford is the
MVP seventeen touchdowns, two interceptions, two thousand yards, no PUKA
and mediocre run game. I'm talking about him. He's fucking awesome.
The NFC West, we got the little overachieving Niners. We
(53:57):
got Seattle that looks incredible on defense, JSN and Sam
Darnold in the running backs sharp and a Kenneth Walker.
I mean, they ain't a lot of talent. There's John
Sneyder's good as his job and the Rams that defense
looks good. Stafford looks good. Shocker, DeVante Adams is good.
It's like Keenan Allen DeVante Adams. You give good those
guys to good quarterbacks are gonna be good. I don't
(54:17):
care that they're slow. No, Keenan's slower and DeVante, but
like those guys are pros. You know those guys are good.
This Texans offense since Watson left Houston, has left a
lot to be desired. I still believe CJ is a
super Bowl level quarterback, but they need to get him
a good OC. If Mike McDonald becomes available, would you
hire him for ten million dollars a year? No, ten
(54:41):
million dollars a year ten. I don't think Mike's making
ten now I would hire him, I guess. But I
think one thing Casario needs to do, and we actually
talked about this last night after we got done the recording,
is I will defend them a little bit. They made
(55:02):
a bold move right, I do think. I don't know
this for a fact, but it was kind of clear
the owner was on them about drafting a quarterback. So
they drafted CJ, which immediately looked like a good pick.
But then they really wanted Will Anderson, so they traded
from twelve up to three. So they went c J Stroud,
Will Anderson back to back. Well, we looked it up.
(55:25):
They traded pick twelve, pick thirty three, and the following
year's first round pick to do that. So you're watching
the text and you're like, God, it feels like they're
missing a couple players. Well, yeah, they are, because they
gave up a first round pick and picked thirty three
that all of a sudden, that could be a guard
and a running back. All of a sudden, that could
be some unreal tight end and a tackle. Right, but
(55:46):
that guy doesn't exist because they traded it away to
get Will Anderson, who's a badass. But like, part of
the acquisition price to get Will Anderson was losing out
on other players, and their team has serious holes and
that's kind of comes with the territory of making a
trade like that. So I just think Casario's got to
find a way to like improve the offensive personnel and
(56:10):
the offensive line, specifically Cole Popovich. I was thinking about
this last night. Who is their offensive line coach? My
first year at President State in two thousand and eight,
he was the right guard and he got We played
Rutgers Week one and they had like the mccordy Twins,
Kenny britt They were really good. We beat him, No
big deal. He got hurt in that game and his
(56:31):
career just ended. He might have got hurt maybe in
training camp. I'm pretty sure he played Week one. But
the year before Ryan Wendell, who's the Rams coach, offensive
line coach, and Cole Popovich, who's the Houston Texans coach,
were the garden center for Frez. A team I think
it won nine or ten games. I was thinking, like,
how many college teams in the last twenty years have
two of their five starting offensive linemen. There are offensive
(56:53):
line coaches in the NFL. Pretty awesome accomplishment for Pat Hill,
who's also an offensive line guy. Just tidbit that no
one might care about beside me. Born and raised in Indy.
We all know the quarterbacks situation since Luck retired and
the carousel seemed endless with the passing of JJ or
Jim Rsey, not JJ, his badass dart daughter's taking the
(57:15):
reins and the resurgence of Indiana Jones and Jonathan Taylor.
Blah blah blah. It's just like reading off all the
sweet Things with Shane from Philly and lou from Cincy.
Am I completely insane to think the Colts could be
a perfect place for AJ Brown and Trey Hendrickson to
join the squad for a Super Bowl push. So basically,
(57:37):
trade your first round pick for AJ Brown, your second
round pick for Trey. I think that's a little ambitious.
But would I do that if I was Chris Ballard one.
I do think that the Eagles are in a spot
where I just think you can't give away a J. Brown.
He's too good. You just kind of deal with him
posting some weird stuff about Jaylen. It just kind of
(57:59):
is what it is. But yeah, I don't know. I
don't think he's gonna get traded. Trade the Bengals lose
a couple of games, for sure, could get traded. When
does how he ever trade someone sweet? He'll trade for
someone sweet, But I have a hard time like a J.
Brown clearly is one of the best players in the league. Like,
that's you just see when he turns it on. Now,
(58:20):
you could argue it's a little hit or miss, but
they're clearly not as good. You know, the Eagles mindset
is to the Bengals, obviously in a different place, but
the Eagles like, why can't we just be back in
the NFC Championship game and then we're sixty minutes away
from the Super Bowl? Look at our team. No, it's
not guaranteed, but trading aj Brown, even for a first
(58:42):
round pick, makes us that less likely to happen. I'd
rather trade him in the offseason for like a second
and a fourth than do it during the season, because
even if he's mad, what's he's gonna loaf? He still
plays hard. What's up with these play callers calling all
these double passes? After seeing the failed ones from USC
in the Seattle Seahawks game, it got me thinking, I
(59:04):
don't think I've seen a successful double pass in four years.
You know, when you spend fifteen twenty hours a day
Monday through Thursday, and even Friday is probably a thirteen
hour day. Saturday for traveling's a long day. You spend
a lot of time thinking and they say paralysis.
Speaker 2 (59:25):
By an paralysis by analysis, analysis by paralysis, screwing that
statement up, but whatever, just overthinking, like sometimes just idle
time and just you know, the creative mind can work
to your benefit and also can hurt you.
Speaker 1 (59:46):
You know, like the Chiefs. Did you see the play
that went viral of them running that like kind of
diamond formation where they hand to one of the upbacks
who's on I think to the left of Mahomes, and
Mahomes is pretending to try to at them to jump
off sides and start screaming like fuck, this never works,
And clearly he was doing that to screw them up,
(01:00:09):
like a there's a fine line between doing like that's
pretty genius and they got some downtime they're probably bsing
on the practice field. Who I don't know whose idea
that was, but like, and then the double pass when
you're just driving easily down the field, and I think
a lot of the double pass comes with one football
can be pretty what's the best way to describe it,
(01:00:33):
Monotonous can be taxing on a daily basis of just
doing the same things over and over. Right, You show
up early, you film, study, you work out, you breakfast,
you practice, you go to meetings, you walk through you rehab.
It's just the same thing over and then just trying
to get to the game and then you do it
(01:00:53):
all again. And part of keeping guys engaged is doing
fun shit, like Coach Reid is really good at that,
Like that Mahomes moment, Like that helps guys stay locked in,
Like how are you supposed to Like I understand Mahomes
is an ambitious like you know, an achiever, right, but
(01:01:13):
still he's human being. Twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty years old,
got a couple kids, super rich, they've already won a bunch. Like,
just doing the same thing over and over a practice,
like you can lose your focus. And the easiest way
to keep guys engaged is like bust out a trick
play every once in a while in practice. Well, you
can't just run and practice over and over. Eventually you
want to run in the games. So I can imagine
(01:01:34):
when that play call comes in in a game, they
all probably light up in the in the huddle. Now,
when you throw it to the other team, it's obviously
a disaster, but I do kind of get it, you know,
part of I don't know exactly the rules we're gonna
have for I'd be a pretty big hypocrite, you know,
about having a very strict diet for my unborn children.
(01:01:56):
But like, you can't just say you never get ded
ice cream in your entire life, Like that's not really
a healthy way to approach it. But you also can't
give him ice cream for breakfast. But every once in
a while you gotta let him have an ice cream code.
And I think that's kind of like a trick. Plays. Obviously,
when they work, you look like a genius, but you
can't just never run them, especially good teams. I mean,
(01:02:18):
that's just helps people stay engaged. How come Sean Payton
isn't taking more heat for his play calling. It's either
(01:02:38):
screens or deep balls. While bow has definitely struggled with
balls twenty plus yards down the field, I feel like
he's a good thrower ten to twenty yard routes. Totally agree.
I feel like when they get him on the run
and he has like crossing routes, like if he's going
to his right and one of the wide receivers is
basically paralleling him, you know, if he's five yards behind
(01:02:59):
the line of scrimmage and that guy's ten to fifteen
yards past the line of scrimmage following him. He's good
on the run making those throws. I mean, he made
a bunch in that game against the Giants in the
fourth quarter. But just like having him drop back and
throw some go routes or deep breaking routes, it's clearly
not been working, and it feels like they are running them,
(01:03:20):
and maybe it feels they're doing it more because they
miss it so often. It's actually not that high of
a number. But I don't understand why they don't utilize
his legs way more often. Okay, do you think the
twenty twenty draft happened again, Jordan Love would be taken
ahead of Herbert and Jalen Hurts. Love is won in
(01:03:40):
the playoffs and played in more games than Herbert, and
I think that it's fair to say he's more physically
gifted than Herts. The twenty draft, Burrow Tua, Herbert Love
Hurts well. I think if you don't factor in injuries,
Burrow's a lock to go one. I think if you're
doing it today and you're factoring in injuries, Bro's pretty risky.
(01:04:02):
I mean he's had major injuries, major injuries, so to me,
people are gonna think I'm nuts, but I think there'd
be a big contingent in the NFL that would take
Herbert again, based on today the information we have on
the injuries to what clearly is going last. You know,
I think that the Shanahan guys like I Hurts would
(01:04:23):
not look good in the Packers offense. Hurts would not
be good for Kyle Shanahan. He would not you couldn't function.
Hurts would not operate in Baker Mayfield offense. So you
have to kind of build the offense specifically for Jalen.
So I think it would be very dependent on the coach.
I think Jalen, excuse me, Jordan in theory. And again
(01:04:48):
I'm not like anointing him some the greatest things since
slice spread. He can be very hit or miss, but
he's a little more less scheme dependent, you know, Jalen,
you have to have a pretty clear plan of attack.
I would say I would even put two on this list.
You know, I think all four of those guys, Burrow, Herbert, Love,
Hurts would go I mean one through four. I to
(01:05:11):
probably goes in like the fourth round. It's crazy how
Baddy looks. Jeez, Lions fan what is wrong with our offense?
The old line is good at times, but we can't
move the ball consistently when it matters. But you have
young us, you have a new center and new guard.
One's a rookie. I mean, it's just part of the deal.
(01:05:35):
I mean, Sewell, Decker excellent players. Your skill guys are excellent.
Like I'd be pretty bullish an alliance, I wouldn't be
that worried about the offense. With the Chiefs now surprising
back to normal, Lamar injured, the Bill's secondary week, the
Chargers banged up, the Broncos not playing well, and Joe
Burrow out, etc. Everyone else implos they still get the
(01:05:58):
one seed by home field and get a week first
round all leading up to the AFC Championship in Arrowhead,
and no one really good enough on defense to stop them.
With that feeling like it's inevitable, does it take the
excitement out of the regular season for you? It does
for me. It almost makes an AFC regular season game pointless.
I think if you got Andy Reid and Spags and
(01:06:20):
Veach on the phone right now, they'd say, listen, it's
easy to say out loud. All the shit's hard. Some
of these games we have won. Against Buffalo, we easily
could have lost, even the game that you know, we
kind of embarrassed Lamar didn't. Wasn't the final score seventeen
to ten when they beat him. It's not like they
are winning these games forty five to seven. So it's football.
(01:06:43):
You're one weird bounce away from being down ten nothing.
I mean the Chiefs even remember the first year they
won the Super Bowl when they had the crazy comebacks
against Tennessee. Was Cincinnati. I forget who they were down.
It was Houston. It was like Houston and Tennessee or
Hennessee than Houston, whatever the setup was. It's football. I
(01:07:05):
don't think it's going to be that easy. I hear
what you're saying, because I told Maria this the other day.
I'm like, the Chiefs are gonna be back in the
super Bowl. It's like, I don't want it. I'm like, well,
we're Andy Reid Veach people like we're rooting for It's like, no,
I'm not, I've seen enough. I'm like, well I am,
because I appreciate him. I mean, if they get back
to the super Bowl, that is an incredible accomplishment. It
(01:07:27):
really is. And I've always been obviously know these guys personally,
but even the Patriots, like I didn't know Belichick or Tom,
but I did appreciate like how dominant they were because
how hard it is to do that. This isn't This
isn't the Dodgers that have a seven hundred million dollar player,
four hundre million dollar player, three two hundred million dollar pitchers,
like it's this isn't that the former MVP first baseman
(01:07:50):
Muncie who's sweet? Should the Titans hire Belichick as the
head coach and Mike McDonald's the offensive coordinator, find a
decent personnel guy and go from there. That's the problem
with the Titans is they already got the personnel guys.
It's two of them. Brinkerd in Berganzi. So Belichick, Belichick's
(01:08:12):
NFL career is over, like he's even if he got
North Carolina turned around a couple of years. By then,
he's seventy five, seventy six years old. It's pretty crazy
Belichick's never coaching in the NFL again. I guess it's
not as crazy saying that right now. October twentieth, first,
twenty twenty five, based on what we've seen in North Carolina, though,
I I do think the Pablo Tore video of her
(01:08:36):
talking much more nothing burger than it is a story like, yeah,
she's crazy, we know what do you think she's gonna? Sound? Like?
Like I just found that again. I am not against salacious,
crazy stories of like the video of Belichick coming out,
(01:08:58):
which looking back might have been her house shirtless. Like,
I'm not against content like that, but I did feel
a little uneasy watching Belichick miked up with her talking
about like stupid sayings relative to football. It's like, who cares?
This is so stupid? We get it, someone with underdog
(01:09:18):
fantasy hat or leaked this out, But I just don't
does this what does this change? What does this do?
I even thought like, oh, Michael Lombardi goes to Saudi Arabia,
you mean like everyone else, like literally everyone is trying
to get balls deep and they're trillions of dollars. He ain't,
Like is that a weird story? Maybe it would have
been a weird story twenty years ago, but in twenty
(01:09:40):
twenty five, Like, isn't the Big Tens sniffing around their
money too? Isn't everyone? I mean, every single sport? I
just think sometimes with those two guys. Specifically, it's got
a little Mike McDaniel feel like everyone's just trying to
shit on him, and obviously Pablo is getting people to
feed him shit. But just watching that video, I went,
(01:10:03):
is there more to this? Is there? Should I be
watching this video? Like? Do I feel a little icky? Yeah?
I kind of did, because I also think it's kind
of stupid. Is Fernando Mendoza top ten draft pick? The
algorithm first put me on your feed and now I'm
a weekly watcher. I like this guy. Uh. I text
(01:10:24):
a couple of people a couple weeks ago and they
said no. But now, relative to the class, I think
there's a pretty good chance if he's gonna be the
top quarterback. We know top quarterbacks get overdrafted. Like, I
don't see why he couldn't go number one overall. He's tall, huge,
arm winning, Signetti loves him, was good last year at
Cal on a team that didn't have much talent. So
(01:10:45):
I would say if I was a betting man right now,
I would say he has the best opportunity to go
number one overall. I would also bet that a quarterback
doesn't go number one overall, which probably be a stupid
bet based on reason history. I still got a lot
of questions. It's a big ass mailbag. I was so
(01:11:06):
upset when they traded Micah, but now seeing how the
season has played out, I'm actually glad we didn't. Instead,
we gained valuable resources the cap flexibility to make smart
moves this offseason. My question being would you have paid
Parson or moved on? I think the only thing you
can really dg them on is the timing of the trade.
What they should have done is traded him before the
(01:11:27):
draft because their team's pretty good and they could have
used that draft capital like a defensive lineman. What if
they just had a starting defensive end that they had
just drafted. So that, to me, would be the question
mark of how they got here, not that Micah Parsons
was traded. Their defense. Even if you put them on,
it would only do so much. But to me, should
(01:11:48):
they have traded him before the draft, And if they
had done that, would they have gotten more? That's a
fair criticism, but I never If you've listened to me,
you knew I didn't have that big a deal with
trading him. It's not like if the Packers had Micah
Parsons and traded Michael Parsons, Like you're a super Bowl contender?
Why are you trading this guy? The Cowboys clearly were not.
I mean, I honestly, the Cowboys have been one of
(01:12:11):
the best stories in the NFL. Brian Schottenheimer, what a
pretty cool moment for again a guy everyone shit on.
Curious to hear your thoughts on the Giants in your opinion?
Are they a playoff level good in one or two
years and then they got a long way to go?
Let's just well, let's just figure out, like I is
Brian Dable their coach or not next year? I mean,
we got a long way to go. What does neighbors
(01:12:32):
look like coming back off the injury? What's the coaching
staff next year? Let's just I can't put him in
the playoffs anytime near in the near future. We got
a lot of holes to fill, and specifically, the best
offensive skill guy needs to be healthy. If he's healthy,
and they have a good draft, which it feels like
(01:12:53):
they've had a couple good drafts. Now, yeah, I don't
see why they couldn't be a playoff competitive team. Do
you think the NFL divisions should be adjusted? To be
more geographically fair to a team like the Cowboys. Texans
are not Texans Texas being in a division with New York,
Pennsylvania and Maryland makes no sense. It's about market, baby.
(01:13:13):
They want the Eagles playing the Cowboys. They want the
Commanders playing the Cowboys. They want the Giants playing the Cowboys.
It's a business and at the end of the day,
these people are chartering jets. It's also like usc like
should they be playing Ohio State and in Michigan? You know,
in Maryland Rutgers. Probably not. But it's about money and
you ain't putting the Cowboys with like the Saints and
the Jags. I'll promise you that. So I think they
(01:13:35):
like a lot where the Cowboys stand. I'm with you.
Doesn't make perfect sense. Once upon a time, the San
Franco Giants in the Atlanta Braves were in the same
division in baseball. Make that make sense? Pretty sure? The
forty nine Ers and the Atlanta Falcons were in the
same division. So it's just listen. I think we've come
a long way, but the Cowboys are not leaving that
(01:13:55):
group of teams, I'll promise you that. Do you think
the Niners are starting to have thoughts on the Party
contract regret and the way Mac Jones have been playing.
Not saying Purty isn't good, but Mack is playing hurt
and far from the eye test, looks very similar to
Party at a much lower cost. Also, it feels like
there is more resurgence of the bus quarterback than ever
before in the league. Uh. I think you could make
(01:14:18):
the argument of like, should Purty have just been like
a three year, thirty million dollar quarterback? You know? And
this gets to the question earlier about like why are
we paying all these guys just because Mahomes and Josh
Allen and Lamar are made a lot? Why do you
make a lot just because you're also a quarterback? Like
I'm a podcaster too, Should I make the same amount
as Joe Rogan? Probably not. I don't generate the same
(01:14:40):
amount of views and listens to he does, But we're
both podcasters because that's well they're both quarterbacks. Well it's
like okay, well one guy's way better than the other guy.
It's like Jannis and some random dude on the bobcast
for both NBA players, who would you rather have? It's like, well,
I can't have you Honus does the guy I got, Well,
do you want to invest in this guy? Because if
(01:15:00):
you give this guy thirty million dollars a year, that's
gonna be a you problem. And I just think Purty
was difficult because he definitely saved the forty nine ers.
If brock Purty wasn't drafted and didn't come around, Kyle
Shanahan John Lynch probably fired because Trey Lance wasn't just
a whiff. He was a disaster and they would have
been in major trouble. Perty saved their job so that
(01:15:23):
they feel obligated now, it's also easy for them to spend.
It's not their money, it's the owners. But I think
the way you build your team like and this is
what happens when all these other stupid contracts. In fairness
to brock Purty, like I'm not signing less than Tua,
Like I'm not signing for anything less than Trevor Lawrence.
(01:15:44):
And that's his argument. It's like the real estate comp argument.
It's like, well, my neighbor's house sold for one million dollars.
I have a bigger floor plan, a nicer kitchen, and
a bigger backyard, So yeah, I'm putting my house on
the market for one point two million dollars, right, But
you couldn't do that if like, well, my neighbor's house
sold for three hundred and fifty K. It's like my
(01:16:05):
house is exact same. I'm putting it on the market
for nine hundred K. Guess what's gonna happen. No one's
gonna call. Brock's agent had a pretty easy argument based
on the Kyler Murray's, the tuas, the Trevor Lawrences, like
even Jordan Love. Jordan Love got paid after eight good games,
so it's all out of whack. Okay. Last question, longtime listener,
(01:16:28):
love the pod major Major Fugazi. I was thinking about this.
I'm gonna try to bring back Fugazi Friday. It's kind
of got lost in the shuffle during football season, but
I was we might do my top five NFL Fugazi's
this year. Finishing the basement and have one room for
entertainment for a theater where I will primarily watch sports.
(01:16:50):
I want to install speakers in these rooms as well
as a couple speakers on the outdoor patio. I'm not
a sound nerd. Getting quotes from Best Buy for an
install in parts are twenty five to forty k. I'm
still in shock. This ain't no Taylor Swift recording studio.
This is just a private home in the suburbs of
the Midwest. Curious, what did you do for your home
(01:17:14):
viewing room when you watch sports? How much did you spend?
Do you remember the brand of speakers? Right now, I'm
actually building an outdoor office, which is not cheap because
it's basically it's called like studio shed, so it's gonna
have power, it's gonna have air, it's gonna be just
(01:17:38):
basically my home studio in the backyard, which is like
one hundred and fifty square feet, and it's you know,
when it's all said and done, probably costs me like
fifty grand. But given that the room I'm in right now,
which has multiple TVs where I watch NFL football, where
I can watch like ten games at one time, it's like, well,
we're gonna have a kid, so he's gonna get one
(01:17:59):
of the rooms, and this room can't just be a
wasted space for my office when we're gonna need help,
right if moms come and people stay here. So I
needed to utilize the outdoor. But it's just not cheap
at the same time, I don't have a choice. When
I originally moved in this house, we remodeled it and
I got an audio guy. I said, I basically want
(01:18:21):
my house to be like it's twenty fifty, not two thousand,
and I want everything hardwired. I want the speakers all
over the place. And that was at the time, like
twenty five k. It was an expensive endeavor. But all
my you know, that's also my you know, from security
system to all my TVs are on the same operation
(01:18:44):
to my speakers outdoor, like for the backyard and the pool,
I got speakers. But again, like I have no skill
to do any of that. It wasn't cheap. But I
will say this, the guy who's coming tomorrow because they're
building trenches today, they pour the concrete for the offer.
They're gonna build it within the next ten days, he's
coming tomorrow to hardwire that like it is pretty important.
(01:19:05):
So for me, I view a couple of things. If
you're gonna overpay a little bit, let's just use your house.
In general, it's like you end up spending a lot
of time there. Right. There are things like for me,
I could easily I could have any car I want, right,
But I've been driving the same twenty eleven Tahoe for
a long time. I don't drive that many places for
(01:19:26):
my job. My cars are relevant. The car's paid off.
It doesn't cost me anything. Like now, if you have
a job where your sales guy front facing and the
car is important, I don't blame you. I would spend
a lot on a car too. But for me, I
spend a lot of time at my house. My whole
operation is built currently based on my house and the
internet speed and streaming, like I have to go prices
(01:19:48):
that are a little uncomfortable. I'm with you. Forty k
just for a man cave feels kind of crazy. Now,
if you have the money, here's the one thing I
would recommend, cause I don't know what the difference are
between the types, and I have no clue. I just
trusted my guy. If you are going to spend a
lot of time in that room, Let's say you're gonna
live at your house for another ten years, so you
(01:20:08):
do this man cave up. Make it sweet. Spend thirty grand,
which relative to how much money you have, is a
shitload of money. If you spend a lot of time
in there, and it's pretty sweet. You're not really gonna
complain and in ten years, Like, what's that money really
gonna mean to you right now? If that's the difference
of like sending your kid to college or feeding the
(01:20:30):
family right or buying a car to get to work, Like, yeah,
you can't do it. But if this is money that
you have to spend and you are gonna utilize it,
like I think sometimes we overthink things that we end
up utilizing a lot and sometimes get cheap on them
and then regret it later, and then we do things
(01:20:52):
that we're actually not gonna use that often, and we
overspend on stuff. It's like what a waste? What a waste?
So I I think you just have to prioritize how
important is this room to you? Because I'm with you.
The modern technology is pretty expensive. Now. The good thing
is I get like a one hundred inch TV for
(01:21:13):
two thousand dollars. You know, the television's relative to inflation
for most things are relatively cheap. But everything else, the wiring,
the speakers, the setup, the labor is definitely not cheap.
So I would just try to gauge it one. If
you don't have the money, like don't you know, don't
(01:21:36):
put this on credit or anything, if you have the
ability to pay for cash, because that's a huge thing
with me, Like I will do these projects as long
as I have the cash. I'm not taking out like
a heelock to fucking redo my pool that I end
up using ten times in a year, right, just because
it looks cool. Right, if you have the cash and
you want to do it, then do it. If not,
then don't do it. But also if you're gonna use
(01:21:59):
it a lot, you're like once I had this guy
hard wire in my house. I've never really complained about it.
It's been really good. Would I rather use that money
somewhere else? Could I have tripled it if I would
have put in the stock market three years ago? But
it's I've never complained about it since I've had my house.
I mean, I have this huge thing in a closet,
