Richard Sherman breaks down the San Francisco 49ers’ gritty win over the Los Angeles Rams at “Levi’s South.” Despite missing George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy, and Nick Bosa, the Niners relied on Mac Jones’ toughness, Christian McCaffrey’s consistency, and Kyle Shanahan’s brilliant play-calling to move to 4-1 and stay atop the NFC West. Sherman highlights Kendrick Bourne’s breakout game, Alfred Collins’ game-saving play, and the defense’s resilience. He also discusses Shanahan’s NFL Coach of the Year case, Matthew Stafford’s underrated arm talent, and clears up talk about a possible QB controversy in San Francisco. Plus, Sherman reacts to the growing media buzz around Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders and why handling opportunities the right way matters for young quarterbacks.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Matt Jones, who Mac Jones? Who Mac Jones? Two A
one three, three oh eight zero zero four.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
You had to hit Mike mac Jones up on the
low because again mac Jones is about to blow. Welcome
back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. And as you can see,
I'm still on the road. But I had to react
to that Niners win last night and Levi South Bang

(00:28):
bang Matt ten got it done again three and oh
now in his starts, what more can you say?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
I can say a ton no George Kittle, no Brock Perdy.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
No Brandon Ayuk. I mean, the list goes on. Nicholas
john Bosa injured for the season.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
What do we do? We get it done? I set
in the meetings.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
I set in the meetings with the team and the
defense the night before because we just happened to say,
at the same hotel, which was really cool, and it
was an incredible message Kyle gave to the team about resilience,
accountability and just finishing, having energy, winning energy and winning
focus to the last play. They had every intention of

(01:21):
winning this game. This wasn't a game where they felt like,
oh man, you know, oh the Rams are up here
and we don't have a chance and we can't get
this done. He thought we had enough guys to get
it done. He said, we have enough to get this done.
He knew the task, and the team knew the task.
The young defense knew the task, and they were up

(01:43):
to the task. Fred Warner, another great game by him.
D Winters, you know, the guys played great. I think
in the secondary, Ronaldo Green played a really really solid
game up the stout went out with the injury, but
I thought he was good. Diamador made a huge PBu
late in the game against Pooking the cool that really
really could have could have been disastrous.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
That could have been a game ender right there.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
There were so many plays where the momentum could have shifted,
uh and and and put the San Francisco forty nine
ers away, but they would not stop fighting. And I
remember there was a narrative around these young draft picks like,
oh man, they're they're not doing great enough in training camp.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
They're too high.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
You know, I'm not seeing the things I need to
see in a preseason game. Well you're seeing them now.
You are seeing them right now before your eyes, and
real life. This is multiple weeks were a rookie. A
rookie player impacted the winning in a huge way. It
was up and stout with a with a PBu with
a late uh PBu against the the Arizona Cardinals. And

(02:46):
this week it's Alfred Collins with a game saving force
fumble at the goal line. I mean, Robert Salah is
from the the Pete Carroll Tree. From the tree and
they say, hey, if you give us an inch, will
protect it. So if you no matter what, if there's
a if there's space between the end zone and the ball,

(03:07):
we must protect it. And that's exactly what he did.
He protected the end zone, took the ball away. I
was talking to Fred warning and Fred thought the crowd
was cheering because because they scored, because Gyron Williams that scored,
not because.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Of a fumble. But he should have known it was
because of a fumble.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Because San Francisco forty nine Ers fans were the loudest
in the building. They were allowed the entire game and
it was incredible to see. But let's turn around to
the offensive side of the ball. Because Matt Jones who
Matt Jones who? Mac Jones two A one three, three
zero eight zero zero four. You had to hit Mike

(03:44):
mac Jones up on the low because again Matt Jones
is about to blow. He got a little banged up
in the game, he continued to fight, continued to show toughness,
incredible talent, UH poise.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Football IQ.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I mean, he played an incredible game, and I think
Kyle Shanahan called a masterful game.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
You could see he was deep in his bag in
this game.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
You saw double reverse passes, you saw a fake double
screen scene pass. You saw he put out all the stops.
I had never seen Kyle Shanahan go goal line and
then expand, expand and throw a pass. That was New
England Patriots with Tom Brady and Greg Kowski and Aaron

(04:29):
Hernandez when they used to come goal line, get you
get the defense in the personnel they wanted him in
and then expand and go attack the mismatch. That was masterful.
That was I always see more of that. And then
we got to talk about KB and these receivers. We
of course got to talk about Christian McCaffrey in an
incredible plays he made, but that's expected. He had a

(04:52):
lot of touches. He had one hundred touches coming into
this game, and he's done a lot with him. This
team would not be in a position they are without
Christian McCaffrey and everything he But he's a former Offensive
Player of the Year and that's the expectation from him.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
He looks healthy, he looks good.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
They're gonna have to give Brian Robinson a few more carries,
just to give Christian McCarey. Christian McCaffrey a little bit
of rest. CMC is human being. You need to you know,
he can't carry that the entire season. But he's done
a phenomenal job. But there was a lot of conversation
and I was critical of KP and his drop.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
He was critical.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Kyle Shanahan was critical of him in the meeting, saying, hey,
you can't have it. You can't have it. We need
better and I know you're better than that. I know
who you are. I know you won't do it again.
I know you won't make that mistake again. And he
had the game of his life ten catches for one
hundred and forty two yards and may play after play

(05:47):
after play when they needed to have it. Sure, you
had the third down drop on third and five. And
he's gonna be hard on himself about that. Play, but
they're not in this game and winning this game without
Kendrick Born playing the way he did, and I think
he played like the best receiver on the field. He
was the most productive receiver on the field for either
team uh in this game.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
And I think he deserves praise.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Did the same way we we, you know, push criticism
on players and say, man, you you freaking suck, and
then you're the worst and do all this.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
You gotta give him praise.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Man, the man looked at himself in the mirror, said, hey,
you gotta be better on a short riak, came back
and rectified it, rectified in a big way. And you
love to freaking see it now. Four and one, top
of the NFC West, three to zero in the Division half.
The division games are already played and done, and you've
won them without a lot of your star players, without

(06:42):
George Kittle. When he comes back, it's gonna be it's
gonna take it to another level. You gotta think this
Rams team just took the Super Bowl champs to the wire.
It took a block field goal for them to win
that game. For for the Equals to to beat the Rams,
they they just has to be a four to zero
Indianapolis team, Like, this is a really good Texans defense.

(07:06):
They played against and won that game. They found ways
to win, and they're really talented. They got two of
the best receivers in the National Football League. So this
isn't just a oh man like a divisional win and
you'd be happy about it. This is a coach of
the year signature performance for Kyle Shanahan, and you got
to treat it that way. Not that Shane Stiking of

(07:27):
the Indianapolis coach doesn't deserve consideration, no question about it.
Mike McDonald and Seattle, no question about it, coaching his
butt off. But for Kyle Shanahan to come in here
with the receivers he started with. He I think they
said this is the most yards for players not on

(07:49):
the roster on the initial fifty three man roster in
the history of the National Football League or twenty years
or something. It's been a long time since a team
has relied so heavily on guys that they did not
have on the initial fifty three man roster. And Kyle
Shanahan does not make excuses for anything. He does not
say a man, we're too injured, and man, that's that's
why we shouldn't be winning. He just finds a way

(08:11):
to win. And I know there's been some criticism of him,
and it's these injuries. I don't know what the answer is.
I really don't. I wish I could tell you, Hey,
I know the answer. They need to should do a
B and C. And I know everybody has their opinion,
but it's not anywhere near as simple as hey, let's
replace the training staff. It's not I'm not sure that's

(08:33):
the answer, because they've done that. Let's replace the strength
and conditioning staff. I'm not sure that's the answer because
they've done that. Let's let's just change the grass, Let's
change the field. Let's let's bring some more people in
to study this. They've done that, I promise you. There's
new people in the they have new positions, they have
a new medical staff, they have a new person in

(08:54):
charge of studying the injuries and the rehabs and and everything.
It's just the most unfortunate luck in the history of
the National Football League.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
But again, it gets.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
It gets to a point that you see how depleted
this team is, but you get to understand and appreciate
Kyle Shanahan's brilliance and his play calling, his coaching, because
I think sometimes you lose sight of that and you
don't appreciate what he's been able to do over these
nine years in San Francisco. But games like this where

(09:30):
it looks like there's no chance this team, there's no
way in hail this team wins this game, and they do,
then you get a respect and appreciation for him. Robert Salah,
this young draft class. They have to depend so heavily
on young guys, but they're well coached and they're getting

(09:51):
it done weekend and week out. They got a tough
schedule coming up. They got the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's
weird because it seems like one week the Seattle Seahawks
have have an opponent that the San Francisco forty Niners
are going to play, and then vice versa. Obviously they're
in the same division, so they're going to see smilar opponents.
But it's happening really close in this schedule. It's really,
in my in my opinion, unique, but man, so excited

(10:15):
for this team. When they get healthy, they're going to
be a Super Bowl contender. If you're wondering faithful whether
they're going to be in my top five. They are,
They will be in my top five next week. I'm
not sure exactly the number they're going to be. But
when you can come in with a backup quarterback, backup
receivers who are who are third and sometimes fourth string,
backup tight ends, backups on the defensive side, missing your

(10:38):
star former defensive player of the year, and come out
and win a tough divisional game against a contender, a
true contender with a veteran quarterback, and Matthew Stafford who
had one of the most absurd throws going opposite thrown
across to two two hat well that I've seen in
a very long time, just showed silly arm talent and
silly ridiculous talent from him. Just I mean, I know

(11:01):
we always talk about these young guys, Patrick Mahomes and
Josh Allen and what they've done, but Matthew Safford has
been doing it for a long time and it's still
doing it at a high level, and.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
We we just got to acknowledge that. We gotta acknowledge
that Matthew Stafford is still doing it big.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
But congrats to Mac Jones, Congrats to the San Francisco
forty nineers. Just a huge game, a huge win. Faithful,
you should feel really good about this team. These young
these young d limen, these young players on defense will
only get better, They'll only get healthier. I think there's
a chance John Lynch makes a move for another veteran

(11:34):
pass rusher. I'm not sure it'll be as big of
a splash as as people are projecting, or people are
hoping for, because they don't want to get more salary
cap issues. I mean, they have enough of them right
now with the amount of dead money that they have,
so the players they've had to let go. But they'll
get healthier, they'll get better. And of course brock Perty
is still the number one quarterback. He's still number one.

(11:55):
Mac Jones understands that Kyle Shanahan obviously understands that John
Lynch stands that in the outside world needs to understand
that there's gonna be no QB controversy. There's gonna be
I don't think there's a chance that brock Perty's healthy
and he's not the number one quarterback.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
I think that'd be absurd.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
But do I think that this gives the San Francisco
forty nine ers peace of mind to let brock Purty
heal in totality and not rush him back like they
did like they had to do for the Jacksonville Jaguars game,
No question about it. I think he sits for at
least three or four more weeks just because of how
irritated it got after that game. You don't want to

(12:37):
have those issues lingering through the playoffs or through late
in the season and have these conversations. Obviously, they feel
better and better about mac Jones as he plays. He's
making himself a ton of money. But I don't think
there's any kind of QB controversy. I think there's gonna
be QB controversy these other places when he becomes a

(12:57):
free agent, because he looks like a first round pick
right there was there were there were a speculation that
Kyles Shanahan preferred mac Jones in the draft and he
was gonna draft him, and I thought a lot of
people didn't didn't like that move.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
They didn't like that suggestion.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
They didn't like especially at at three, and he didn't
pick him to his credite pick, Trey Lance.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
It didn't work out.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
Trey Lance looks pretty good out there in LA backing
up justin Herbert. But now you're getting a chance to
see what Mac Jones would look like in a Kyle
Shanahan system. And he looks like a great quarterback. He
looks like a great quarterback. He looks like he'd get
the job done for a long time to come. And
I expect him to find a job next year and

(13:40):
be another one of those career revitalizations. Uh in the
same breath as Sam Darnold and and and uh Indiana
Jones out there in Indianapolis, and uh, who I'm missing
because there's been the Baker Mayfield in Tampa. It's been

(14:00):
a lot of guys that have kind of been been
given up on and been called bus and then turned
around and got great coaching, whether it's Kevin O'Connell, Sean McVay,
Kyle Shanahan, and then really really had a career resurgence.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
And that's been cool to see.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
But in other news, we're hearing a lot of conversations
about Shador Sanders and how a number three quarterback shouldn't
be talking to the media and how he should shut
up and he's becoming a distraction and all this again,
I think Shador Sanders is is an NFL quarterback. I

(14:38):
think he could be a starter on a number of teams.
Do I think he should be getting interviewed as a
as a number three quarterback?

Speaker 1 (14:46):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
But I think as a professional, if you're in a
locker room and somebody comes up to you and asks
a question, it's rude for you to just walk away.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
It's rude for you to say no comment. I got
none to say, because that'd be news.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
You know that they spend that story and manipulate that
to say, hey, he's a bad guy. This is why
he can be a starting quarterback. Because he doesn't know
how to handle the media. I think he's handled himself
pretty well. Being confident is one thing, and I think
him saying hey, I think I'm better than a lot
of guys out there. You seeing a quarterback play, I'm
better than a lot of them, I think that's unnecessary

(15:23):
because of how it's going to be perceived and how
it's going to be received. Again, I think the narrative
about him not going to Baltimore was crazy, and I've
spoken my piece on that. But then you look up
and you see a situation where Lamar Jackson has a
hamstring injury and now they have to go to their backup.
And that's a situation where if you just don't say

(15:46):
anything and Baltimore wants him and Baltimore picks him up,
then you're in a situation where again you're learning from
a veteran quarterback, a super bowlt I mean, an MVP
of the league multiple times, and this situation comes up.
You're surrounded by a really really good team, a good organization,
a good head coach who plays situational football as good
as anybody, a great running back behind you.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
So again, this is why you don't turn down any opportunities.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
If a team in the future, if a team wants
to draft your kids, just say yes. Just say yes.
I know teams don't. You don't want to go to
bad teams that are untalented teams. But when you don't
have a choice in his third round or later, just
say yes. Just say yes, because you never know what
can happen in this National Football League, and every opportunity
is a good opportunity. It's an opportunity, and you never

(16:36):
know what's gonna happen any given Sunday. Anything can happen.
This game never ceases to amaze me. So in that situation.
I think, you know, I think he's he's doing the
best he can. He I don't think he needed to
do the whole mind silence thing because Rex said he
should just shut up and do all that. Like, I

(16:56):
think that's a little bit extra. But I'm I'm not
really mad at him. I'm not, you know, I think
it's a non story. He's doing the best he can
in the situation. He's probably frustrated. He thinks he should
be playing, and he wants to play, and sometimes things
are aren't in your control. But again, can he handle

(17:19):
the situation a little better? I'm sure he could. I'm
sure he's going to continue to learn from this and
get better and improve with each and every day, which
is which is all he can do and which is
all anybody can do. As always, I appreciate you guys
joining us. You could be anywhere in the world, but
you hear with us even when we're on the road
and we're not at home in our studio, and I
sure do appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
I don't enough
