Speaker 2 (01:47):
Don't foo Bowl championships.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
That should always be the expectation.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
All right, man, ex you go ahead. Welcome back to
the Richard Sherman Podcast. I got one of my favorite
guests on Cornerback DJ Red the second rated PFF second rated.
You know they still punish you for some of the
BS calls that we're gonna talk about that. We're gonna
(02:11):
talk about that. I'll talk about it because we don't
want to get you fine. I'll talk about it some
bo like let him play, especially the one on Jefferson
like you undercut it, couldn't have played it, and then
they let him get away with the push. But but I.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Digress, hey, man, like I said, I'm not trying to
get fine, bro.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
No, we ain't gonna get you fine. But this is
your seventh season in the National Football League. Now seven.
I remember when you break up.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
That man not knowing anything.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I remember when you got your first opportunity against the
Kansas City Chiefs and Mahomes before everybody knew he was
Mahomes and he That was an interesting game for us.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Interesting game. I Tyrek ignored the game plan. I say,
whoiver'sduring Tyree, I'm over the two.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
She was smart, man, that was still a smart game.
Tell me tell me about how you felt like when
you got drafted and when you got the call. Were
you expected it earlier, were you expecting it later or
were you not expecting it at all? I mean usually
people feel like they should be drafted higher than what
they were.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
For sure, I thought I was going to be a
Day two pick.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
I thought I was gonna probably land somewhere and like
the third maybe the fourth round. Just with the season
that I had that was all American at corner, also
all American at kick return and pub return. So I
thought that I definitely was gonna be a third round
draft pick. Went to the combine, didn't run as fast
as people wanted me to run. People thought I was
(03:42):
gonna run a four to three based on the tape.
Ended up running four or five to one. So I
think that was like a big fall for me with
what they were looking at. But yeah, I got drafted
by the Niners. They called me seeing a Senate Santa
Clair area code which I never seen before.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
I thought it was Oakland, So I was like, oh,
I'm about to go. Oh, I'm okay.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
And then John Lynch called me and said, hey, DJ,
We're going to take you, you know, in the fifth
round with the next pick Seahawks Seattle pick before that. So,
you know, all the emotions just with everything I've been
through leading up to that point just kind of just
poured down on me. Started crying and stuff got emotional.
My whole family was there, so that was a really
cool experience.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Well, you got San Francisco, you know things, you know,
you learned some things I'm sure you know from the
old man, and then you got cut you know, and
I'm sure you know that didn't feel good. But you
went to Seattle where I feel like you got a
chance to blossom and really develop into a guy you are.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Talk about that experience, Man, it's crazy, Sharan, like you
was with me. That's when I met you in San Francisco,
which was a crazy experience. Just I'll watched you, bro, Like,
even though we got different body types, it was you
were somebody that always like looked up to as far
as how you played the game, the ball skills and.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Just lob just whatch I was doing.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
So Like when I got drafted, I was actually sitting
next to you and I was just like, Damn, this
ship is crazy.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Bro.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
I'm sitting by Sharon, and you know what I'm saying.
We end up, you know, forming our friendship. You're just
a hell a cool dude down to earth.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
You know. I still took a lot of gems from you,
just with the game. Bro.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
That's one thing I appreciate like from you. You always
gave me information when I asked. You used to never
have a notebook.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
You just like DJ.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
This is all the same, Bro. We run the same defense,
We're gonna get hit the same things. And now that
I'm playing corner. It's true, like when you play quarters,
when you play Man, you get the same route concept
as a it's a copycat league. But like even the
toolbox stuff, like for example, you taught me like when
the receiver pushes off to grab their hand, make me
catch you one hand.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
They're calling that shit now like I got to, I got,
I got two.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
And it's like you may be able to do it
subtle when they push off, but like if you just
grab it and you know I'm making them, I'm forcing
to catch it with the dominahan or non dominantant. I've
gotten two PI calls this year from that, and I
know the rest have a hard job, so like I
don't give him a hard time. I just come up
to him and ask what did I do so I
could correct it? And it's just like you're grabbing his hand.
(06:07):
I'm like, damn, I used to get away with that
when I was in Seattle, but now that they're calling it,
it's just something that I got to adapt to.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah, I think because because literally when you got called
for it, I felt so terrible because I was like,
he went to push off and you grab the air.
I said, that's my move.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Hey, that's what I lay. That's in the toolbox, in.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
A toolbox, like, but I don't understand it. And that's
what the frustrating part of playing dB is because everybody
sees it like like you're always guilty until ruven innocent,
Like it's like, you know whatever.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Being real, it's interesting because like there needs to be
a blueprint of what to do and what not to do,
because like, for example, when we played the Bills two
weeks ago, I got called, you know, for the one
grabbing the hand, and then I got called for literally
like I tripped. I'm running to my receiver. I know
the balls in the throne because the receiver calls to me,
(07:02):
I look back and bat the ball down and they
still throw a flag.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
I asked the ref what did I do? He said,
you didn't get your head back. I'm looking at the
jumble tron, Like, bro, I got my head back to
break the ball up.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
So like I just told him. I told him like, hey,
like I just don't respect that call, Like just respectfully,
I just don't respect that call. So it got to
the point where I started playing just like you know
what when I press, because that's what my max to
do is press. It got to the point where, like
the PBu I had on Coleman, this dude is literally
just pushing me off, and I'm just letting him push
(07:33):
me off. He created space from a push off, and
I still broke the ball up, but I'm giving him
an advantage. Because the thing is saran, there's always going
to be hand touching and fighting in the midst of
the play.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
That's what is the confusing part.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
If a receiver pushes off, I'm gonna pull because if
he pushes off, he's creating separation. So most dvs are
not going to just let a receiver create separation, so
they catch the ball. So that's the part where I'm
having a little bit of issues.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
But public to the public, like, that's the part the
public doesn't understand, and that's why I get frustrated because
they only see us grab you know what I mean,
Like it's like you did, did you not? The reason
I have his hand in my hand is because he
put it in my chest to push me off. So
you're pushing me away. I'm running full speed. If you
don't put your hand out, I'm gonna probably run back
(08:23):
this ball.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Make the play on the ball.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
But but they think that's okay. They're like, oh, that's
all part of the game. If that's part of the game,
then my grab is part of the game. Then it's
all hand fighting. But you can't see one side as Oh,
it's just receivers push off, that's what they're supposed to do.
And then I can't defend myself like exactly.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
And even in London, like you know me, I go
up to the rest before the game every game just
to you know, say what's up? Ask him like you know,
y'all gonna let this play today or is this gonna
be a game where you know what I'm saying? And
I got to just you know, not not be handsy
at all. You know, in London, I already knew he
played internationally. I already knew I'm playing against justin Jefferson.
(09:05):
I already know these people from another country want to
see the gritty, So I already know that they're going
to try to, you feel me, give him calls, especially
you know, highest paid receiver.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
So I came into the game just like you know,
you can't be handsy.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
So like the one PI you talk you called where
you were talking about where I didn't even touch Bro.
It didn't even touch Bro. Didn't touch Bro. He pushed
off on me. I let him push me off. And
then last minute, I lean a lowk to find the
ball and he called a penalty Bro. I was just
like flabbergasted.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (09:39):

Creat an account and use the redeem code Sherman that's
sac r m a N for twenty dollars off your
first purchase. Download game time today? What time is it?
Game time? Bro? They were cheating y'all that game. Like
I rarely watch a game where I'm like, I'm a bias,
I'm gonna be a BDB centric, But in that game,
(10:45):
I'm sitting there like, Bro, y'all cheating these boys. Y'all
can't call all this. Y'all call like three on sauce.
That game they called like three on sauce. They called
like two on you, and it was nonsense. Calls you
undercut and made a heck of a play on that outroude.
You hadn't beat you have to.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Leverage, pushed me off. And that's why he pushed.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
You because you were to his leverage side, like you
run it out you you had him cut off and
so he had to like swim you and push you
to get to that spot. And it's like, Okay, y'all
not gonna call that. Y'all not gonna I understand y'all
not calling offensive PI, but don't call God damn hold
or no bullshit like that when clearly that's the only
thing I can do. So I'm I'm I'm saying the
(11:21):
things you can't say DJ No.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
I appreciate it, shaf I know you know, I see,
I see you tweet out and I tweeted I called it,
but I deleted it because I didn't want to get fined.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
So don't get fined. Yeah, that's what that's what I
am in the media now they can't find me refs.
That was terrible football, and the game is getting away
from us. We're starting up. It's too offensive. Like if
you're letting him push, don't let them push. Call every
push and then they'll stop doing it. And then I
guarantee you a lot less dbs will be grabbing hands
(11:52):
and stuff. If they're not pushing you when they call.
When we close the gap, then there's nothing. They won't
create the separation, there won't be.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Any exactly Like to me, bro football is an art,
like playing dB is an art, Like you have to
have tools. We don't really know, like we watch film,
but you don't really know one hundred percent what routes
they're running, so you're really reacting. You're using a lot
of you're using everything, like every movement, everything you do matters.
So like for me, even playing receiver is an art
(12:19):
like running routes like that. It's a beautiful art. I
feel like the game where it's going right now is
like if a receiver isn't getting open, he could just
kind of like the NBA, just flop and just get calls.
And it's just like, I just feel like that's taken
away from the game in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Bro, they're getting these long PI calls. I mean, we
watched the game in Pittsburgh game yesterday and it was
like like, Bro, yeah, y'all, you're just gonna throw the
ball and you're gonna get these calls and then it's
gonna be like, oh, okay, Well, I guess it could
have been called like that's a forty yard penalty.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
What you mean, I guess an explosive. It's an explosive.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
It's an explosive, and it's lazy explosive, Like you put
it up. It didn't take a lot of skill for
you to put it up. Now, the receiver just gotta
flop and it's up to the rep judgment. Maybe he
would have called that, Like no, we wouldn't have caught
that in And to your point, the one in the
Buffalo game, I argued that, and I argue that to
(13:11):
death because the receiver not only didn't avoid you, he
went into you.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
And tell you to draw a flag. And I turned
my head around. I knew what he was doing. I
knew the ball was under thrown because he was running
to me. So I made sure I got to him,
turned around and bat the ball down and he ran
it to me and it's a flag.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
But that's like, and that's what I'm saying, Like if
I asked the normal person, the people who come up
with these rules, to go out there and I'm gonna
be the receiver and I'm just gonna have a quarterback
throw it anywhere, and you're gonna have your back to
the ball. I want you to recognize where my eyes
are looking, know that the ball is closing in, and
be able to turn around, get your eyes there around
(13:49):
and bat it as I'm bumping into you, and then
get the flag on you. You're gonna be like, Bro,
that's the most the hell no, that we're not gonna
make that rule because it's impossible.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
It's impossible down there.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
And yeah, we got to get paid more than if
they calling it like that.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
To get you paying the receivers more exactly, But how's
the family. How's the babies.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
The family is doing good. Bro just had Brodie. He's
about a month now. He's doing very good, like super
Chill only cross when he's hungry, canceling.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
He's doing well. Bree's doing well. Everybody's doing well.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Love that. I love that talk about that transition in
that journey to fatherhood. Look you look a lot less.
It looks a lot more stress. That's sure.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
It's beautiful, bro And it's also just a I feel
like for me, it just created a different type of
maturity and even like the way I go about my
business with football, like I understand now like this is
really a business. I feel like when I first got
into the league, it was just more so like oh
I'm living my dream, like oh this is fun. But now,
like you think about it, like what you put on
(14:59):
that tape, Like that's your resume, So you got to
really go out there and you know, put your best
foot forward every every chance you get, and you know
you're being judged for that tape and that tape could
lead you two three years down to this team or
whatever team as far as contracts and everything. So like
just the business side of knowing, like you know, I
want to be able to set my family up, you know,
financially for the rest of my life and hopefully create
(15:21):
generational wealth after.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
That too, speaking of the business side. And you know
what I mean. And again you're still on this team,
so you know what I mean. Don't ain't nothing crazy,
No appreciate they fire They fired Solah, you know, and
it didn't seem like anybody really was prepared for that,
or anybody saw the writing on the wall or like
you know, outside or inside the building. How had how
(15:42):
did that decision like affect you at all? And did
it catch you by surprise?
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Yeah? It was. You know, it was something I've never experienced.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
A lot of guys in the locker room we were
talking a lot it like we've never experienced this, especially
a fire, and in season, especially early in the season.
And for me, how it happened was We're going to
our workout, you know, the day after the game. We
had our workout, and you know, people had their phones
on them for whatever reason. They were just like bro,
(16:11):
like you know, they just fire Solace. So everybody went
and got their phones and it was weird because like
you know, our trainers and stuff, they was on their phones.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Too.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
We all hearing the news so like it was just
weird because like nobody was saying it, but everybody was
on their phones looking at it and were just looking
like like, damn, what's about to happen?
Speaker 3 (16:32):
Type.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
So, like once we got down working out, everybody in
the locker room was talking about it and just was
really in disbelief. It was pretty shocking, bro, Like it
was something that I've never experienced, Like I.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Said, Yeah, I mean, I don't know many times where
it's happened like this unless something crazy happened. Obviously the
Urban Meyer situation. He out there and you know the
video comes out or something, some kind of something crazy
has to happen for the coach to get fired like that.
I mean, y'all were two and three by to go
play Buffalo to compete for number one in division?
Speaker 3 (17:03):
Like yeah, yeah, what like.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Y'all going five?
Speaker 3 (17:08):
No? For sure?
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Like I said, I can't really speak on it because
you know, I don't know. I don't know, I don't
know what went into that, But I will say I
know that coach Shla was a good coach. You know,
I reached out to him just because you know, he
was the reason why I came here to New York.
So like, you know, I told him, Matt told him
I got a lot of respect for him. Yeah, we
chopped it up for a little bit on text, but
that was.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Pretty much it, right, right, that's all you can again,
like it's a business and you got to deal with that.
You know, even if there is some emotional attachment to it,
you gotta do your best because you still got again,
you got mouths to feed now, so it's a whole
different We talked about this when you were younger, like
grown man's strength and dad's strength and all that. They
all was like, oh that ain't nothing. That ain't nothing.
(17:49):
It's like now, I guarantee you you know what it means.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
No Mischelle bro But yeah, that that whole situation was,
to say the least, interesting, Like coach Ubrick has taken over,
and you know, he's a great coach, you know, I
know it's a lot on his plate.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Just find out that news.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Especially him and Sol over close so they you know,
obviously he wants to be a head coach. But I'm
sure he didn't want to be a head coach that way,
you know what I mean. He wanted to go to
another team and be a head coach. He didn't want to,
you know, coach to get fired and him take over
as interimine coach.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
How has Brick ben you know, I know again nobody
wants this to happen, but he seems to have taken it,
you know, in stride as best you can. And obviously
he's been dealing with you guys a lot as the coordinator.
Has he been different in the building, like y'all seen
the same amount? Or is he still calling it the
same or is he delegating a little bit more because
it's a lot of us play now, No.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
For sure, I honest say, one thing about Yubrick that
I like is he holds everybody accountable as far as
just like you know, we're going to team meetings. It's
like tell a truth Monday. He put the film up.
You know what I'm saying. The film is gonna speak.
So we talked offense, we talked defense, we talked special teams,
to talk about what we did right, what we did wrong.
Pretty much hold it holds everyone to the same standard.
(19:05):
As far as like him calling the plays differently, He's
calling and plays pretty similar.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
But you know, the first week it was just.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
A lot, Like you could tell it was just a lot,
Like he probably didn't sleep much just with you know,
going from a DC going to a head coach, head coach,
you got to deal with all type of stuff compared
to just being a defensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
So you can kind of see that.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
And we had to just be patient with like the
game plan stuff because he had to you know, figure
other stuff out far as like working with the offense
now and you know, focusing on special teams as well.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
So he had a lot on his plate.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Like you said, how has it been, You know, a
lot of stuff has happened since they fired Salid Now
it seems like they're really trying to all in win.
They win, got Davonte. Uh, they figured stuff out with
Hassan Reddick. How has Davante been since he come in?
I know you you haven't had to deal with him
because you've had the injury, but just I'm sure he
(20:00):
chopped it up.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
Putting, Yeahdavonte's good people's bro on that, explaining he's just
a cool dude. Maybe because we both from Cali, but
our first interaction we kind of just clicked like that
explained like when you click, like it was just something
that's like, oh, he's just a solid dude, pretty vocal
as far as uh, just with the team. Like he
spoke after the game and he's pretty much was like,
(20:21):
you know, I know I just got here, but like
this isn't the standard. Like just with the energy of
last game, with how we played at halftime, we were
pretty low and we were up by two points, like
we was sad about the pick, but it's like we
up too and we're about to get the ball back.
But the energy, it was like we was down by
like thirty five. So he was just talking about just
(20:44):
like the energy just gotta just gotta be up. It's
not like I feel like a lot of a lot
of guys, especially guys that were drafted in New York,
we've been losing. So I think it's like when like
adversity hits, it's like, oh, not this again, you know
what I mean? When it's football, Like they get pay
eight millions of dollars to do what they do, so
you know they're gonna make plays. So I just think
(21:05):
that once we get to the to the mindset of
like you know, whatever happens, bro, just focus one play
at a time, reset dominate person in front of you.
Just detach from the scoreboard, just focus on your your craft.
I think that's when things is gonna change.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
I agree. I agree. You've been a part of winning culture.
You've been a part of good cultures, good winning teams.
So is he, so is so is Aaron. And you know,
I've never seen Aaron and the kind of slumpy's in
right now. But I know if anybody's gonna get out
of it, it's gonna be him, and he's gonna go
sling the rock to get himself out of it. How's
your growing feeling? How you how you feeling now? You're
(21:40):
getting a little better.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Yeah, it's feeling solid. All had to work out today.
That went really well, so I should be good.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
That's good. That's good. I know. I know they're hurting
without you, and you know it's hurting you not to
be out there, and that's that's another part that's tough.
But you also got to be careful getting out there,
and you're not one hundred percent because like you said,
your tape is your red man. You get out there
and nobody cared. Nobody's gonna look through all the history
and be like, oh yeah, he had a growing injury.
A couple of weeks they go and say, hey, he
got cooked up.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Hey we're playing man too. Bro, gotta be somewhat healthy.
Can't be out there just half stepping at all.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
You can't. You can't, you can't. Well, I think your
defense is playing well obviously, you know, salt Scott a
little banged up and been kind of in and out
of the lineup during games. Seat tech, you know, but
overall y'all have been playing really solid football. They need
you back. What do you think is going to have
to change to get y'all back on the winning track?
(22:34):
Y'all got New England this week. In New England, you know,
a game that's a winnable game, but you know it's
the National Football League. There's no such thing as no guarantees.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
For me, Bro, we got all the talent, Like, like
I just told I think I just told Davonte. I'm like, Bro,
this is one of the most talented teams other than
the twenty nineteen team that I was on with you.
That team was built differently, But I'm like, overall, like,
we got a talented team, one of the most talented
teams I've been on besides twenty nineteen. I I told
them like I told Davonte, like offensively, like y'all are
(23:05):
way more talented than the twenty nineteen offense that we had.
I said defensively, though, I was like that D line
in twenty nineteen high and go catalls, like that D.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Line was historical, you know what I'm saying. I'm like
that D line was different.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
Like we didn't have to worry about dagger sevens other
than the Super Bowl, but all year we didn't have
to worry about a dagger seven. So I was telling them, like,
we got all the talent we need, but it takes
so much more than that to just win in the
National Football League. Like we got to all players one,
we got to play complimentary football, which we haven't been doing.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Look, it ain't nothing no time like the present. And
you know, you never it's a game of runs in
the National Football League. You know how that is. You
can go run off six seven straight and then everybody
looking at your whole season different. Nobody remember how it started.
They just remember how it finishes, and so hopefully it
finishes the way you guys wanted to finish. You can
get healthy. I know you're taking care of your body
(23:56):
and doing everything you can you and the old lady
find anything, you know, for her to do, or she's
just sitting there trying to keep up with these little kids.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Right now.
Speaker 4 (24:05):
She in motherhood right now, she got her hands. But
it's funny becausehen I come home, I'm hearing two babies crying.
I'm like, dang, like she been with the babies all day.
Like I definitely respect like my wife and everything she's doing.
But yeah, she just you know, in motherhood right now?
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Do you get do you come home and take some
extress off or you better come yeah show.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
I come home, I get like an hour with the
kids with the wife, and then I do treatment, whether
it's like the normal text massage or something. But before
I come home, just dad, just chilling, watch a movie
with my wife, just relax.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Yeah, and try to get them in uh and and
like a little daycare or at least a couple of
hours a day. As soon as you.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
We got we got a nanny, so like she gets
she gets some time to herself, so she's not just with.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
The kids all day. To keep her saying for show, I'm.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
About to say that's the only way to do it,
because be going crazy. Okay, okay, Well, if you got
anything for me, you know I'm always here for you.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
I appreciate that, bro, and likewise care.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Yeah, yeah, I know. I know things ain't the way
y'all want it right now during the season, but it'll
it'll turn turn around. You'll get back out there. Good
ball is right in front of y'all. Y'all got two
winnable games coming up. We'll have y'all in a couple
of weeks, So I'll see you in a couple week.
I'll see you Halloween. We'll be out of New York.
I see if I can wear costume or something.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
No, that's gonna be That's gonna be a great game
for sure.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Yeah. Yeah, that's gonna be a really good game. And
again it gives y'all another opportunity to show what y'all
can do on a national setting. But keep your head up,
keep the team positive, do everything you can to get back.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
It'll turn around, got you, bro. I appreciate that, dog.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Now, I appreciate you all.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Love.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Go go help your old lady and take care of yourself.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Bro. Hello dog, all right, brother, all right. Peace The
