Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. And you know
we don't usually do a Monday night recap, but this
was a special occasion. The Detroit Lions beat the Baltimore Ravens.
They went into Baltimore handled business.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Mitchell. I'm gonna leave it up to you, Ben Richard.
I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Man.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
You you got me off the couch and got me
onto this podcast, and you motivated me.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Man.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
I was going into this game a little nervous. I
told you about this, going into this game freaked out.
I thought, oh, we were gonna get dog walked in
Baltimore like we did last time thirty eight to six Detroit.
This is a different breed to Detroit Lions. This time around.
Holy cow, did they calmed the nerves of all detroiters.
And I think they put the national landscape of the NFL.

(00:50):
I noticed that this team is truly here to stay
as a Super Bowl contender.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Richard. How did this happen? Mitchell?

Speaker 1 (00:59):
They came to play and Dan Campbell came so prepared
to open up the bag of tricks. I mean, you
would have thought this was last year and somebody else
was at the helm of this of this offense, but
it wasn't. It's new offensive coordinator Johnny Morton. I mean
you saw the option. I mean every fourth and one

(01:19):
you knew what it was. If you're the Baltimore Ravens defense,
you're like god, fourth and one, fourth and two, you
know these guys are going for it.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
And they executed so well.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
The option play from i'm ron Saint Brown to Jamior
Gibbs was masterful. The fourth and two up seven in
the fourth quarter, insert play that they were setting up.
They ran three or four actions off of it. Then
they finally got one. Said a'mnra on a corner route
play action, Jared Goff delivered a beautiful pass. It didn't

(01:50):
matter either way because it was a It was a
holding call on the Marlin Humphreys anyways, So at that
point it was it was all cake. But let's talk
about David Montgomery. David Montgomery absolutely took over this game.
His seventy two yard run was the was the moment
I said, wait a minute, wait a minute, don't.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
You hear me?

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Theyyyy, it's gonna be all right.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
We don't want to right hey, Mitchell.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
It started to go and you started to say hey,
It's ain't the sam Old Detroit Lions. This ain't the
Detroit Lions that got blown out and boat raced by
the Baltimore raven. They got something on their mine. Dan
Campbell had something on his mind. And then let's go
to the other side of the ball really quickly, because
it was like Oprah out there. Oprah must have been
in Baltimore, Mitchell, because they were giving out sex. I've

(02:45):
never I don't know if I've ever seen Lamar Jackson
under drest like he was this game. They were containing him,
they were tackling him, they were sacking them, they were
hitting him, they were punishing him. They were punishing Derrick Henry.
That goal line stand was incredible. That goal line stan
to have Dear Henry first in goal they got. They

(03:07):
had four shots at it from about the two or
three yard line, and the Detroit defense stood up, not
only stood up, but almost forced a turnover on Lamar
Jackson on that rollout play. They forced to fumble. You know,
it was a bit of a scrum, but it was
a stop. It was a turnover on downs. I was like,
oh my god, this defense is showing up. It's been

(03:29):
a weakness for so long. We've always talked about what
is Detroit gonna do. Who are they gonna pick up,
who are they gonna trade to really solidify this pass rush.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Little did we know, Mitchell, the answer was right there.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Who was It's al Quadeen Mohammad Richard two and a
half sacks from Alkuadem Mohammed and at A lot of
the Detroit fan base was up in arms as a
Darius Smith went and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. They
all wanted them back in Detroit, and he was a
great player here for a short lived period of time.
But this this team, Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell kept faith

(04:05):
in the guys that they had in house. I know
they liked al Kuadee Mohammad. This is a guy thirty
years old. You know, he's been a relative journeyman in
the league and now he's been given his true opportunity
here lining up opposite at Aiden Hutchinson and wreaking havoc
on Lamar Jackson all night. You saw it from him,
You saw it from Derek Barnes, you saw pressure from Alexanzeloni. Obviously,

(04:27):
Aiden Hutchinson got in on a couple of plays. DJ
Reeder made a huge shoe string tackle. I mean, this
defensive line really stepped up, and this was the defensive
line won them this game in my opinion, and also
that front seven linebacking corps. And then you look at
the opportunity that they missed, Richard. I mean they won
by eight. They could have won this game by fifteen

(04:47):
to twenty. Brian Branch, you know, dropped the interception, and
obviously DJ Reid dropped one in the end zone as well.
But all in all, I mean, this team played a
football and they're going to beat a lot of teams
playing like this, Richard, But it is so impressive for
them to go on the road and beat this Baltimore
Raven team. That is what they twenty seven and two.

(05:09):
Lamar Jackson is against the NFC will make it twenty
seven and three. The Detroit Little Lions just put the
entire league. I notice they are Super Bowl contenders.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
I think it was twenty four and two now he's
twenty four and three, and obviously this was a beating.
They dismantled them. But let's talk about the stack. Jack
Campbell got a sack, Derek Bournes got a sack. Muhammad,
like you said, had two and a half. AMZELONEI got
in on it with a half a sec. Your guy
Aden Hutchinson got a sack. Nawaski got a sack. Seven

(05:43):
sacks on the day. That's dominant. That's dominant. And you
talk about losing both coordinators and to get a performance
like that. There was a lot of concern after losing
the Green Bay and rightfully so.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
But it's a.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Division opponent, division game. They were well prepared, they were
rearing on all cylinders. You kind of got hit in
the mouth. It was one of those games that things
just didn't go you way. But since then, this Detroit
team looks like the Detroit team we have grown to know,
a dominant, physical, really really gritty, blue collar football team.

(06:19):
And they're just wearing that Honolulu blue. They look really, really,
really good. I'm gonna have a hard time not moving
around my top five and putting the Detroit Lions somewhere
in there, Mitchell. I don't know where they're gonna be,
but it's hard to keep them out the Baltimore Ravens.
They're one and two. Now you got to go, You

(06:41):
got to go, You must go. You don't got to
go home, but you gotta get out of here until
you figure it out. That's what I got to say.
And Derrick Henry. Derrick Henry fumbling again in the fourth
quarter of a huge game. They played three games this
season he fumbled in the fourth quarter in two of
them in critical situations. Aiden Hutchinson made a heck of
a play. DJ Reid recovered it. But that's starting to

(07:03):
become a concern for this team because he's not a
guy who's fumbled in these situations. I mean, in the past,
he's usually been pretty reliable. And over the last couple
of games, they've found a way to stuff Derrick Henry
and stop him. So that's a concern for the Baltimore Ravens.
They're not I can't say they're stopping Lamar Jackson. He

(07:23):
threw for two eighty eight on twenty one of twenty
seven passing and three touchdowns. But it wasn't enough today.
It wasn't enough today, and that defense to give up
thirty eight points again. Jared Goff deserves a ton of credit.
There were four rushing touchdowns, but he did a great,
a masterful job of just pushing this offense down the field,
you know, controlling the game. Understanding, not putting the ball

(07:47):
in harm's way, taking what the defense gives him. You know,
there were probably a couple of times he probably could
have could have got a first down with his legs,
but he tried to throw it out and that didn't
work out. But I think this gives the one Pride
a lot of hope. This gives the Detroit fans a
lot of hope. All is not lost. There is hope

(08:10):
in Detroit, and there should be Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Dreams. Mitchell.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
I'm dreaming, Richard, and I think that dream they play
like this, I might could turn into a reality. Obviously,
there's a lot of season left, Richard. Let's talk about
the Detroit Lions DNA of going for it. Like you said,
they're a tough, gritty team that you fully expect Dan Campbell,
fourth and two up, twenty four up, thirty one into

(08:39):
twenty four with two minutes left in this game, coming
out of the two minute warning, and in the back
of your mind they're going for it at midfield. I mean,
break down the play because we talked about it off air,
and break down exactly what's going on with Marlon Humphrey
and that situation, the situation that Johnny Morton and i'mon

(09:00):
ra Saint Brown and Jared Goff and Jamiir Gibbs put
Marlon Humphrey in How do you play that? If you're
in his position.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
It's a conundrum. You put the corner, Marlon Humphreys in
a no win situation because if they run the ball
at you, you have to show up.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
In the run game.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
It's down, down, down, and the ball goes to you.
So it's really the offense saying, Hey, we're gonna isolate
the corner in the run game and we're gonna make
him tackle with the running back. But at the same time,
you have to keep your You have to be Popeye Mentell.
You got to see that receiver in your peripheral because
if he takes off, you got to cover him too. Now,
if you turn your back and cover him and they

(09:41):
run the football, they're out the gates and nobody's there.
And so it's a really great play from the Detroit
Lions and Johnny Morton. It's a play that I had
to deal with when I was in San Francisco in
nineteen The Cincinnati Bengals ran it right near the goal
line and it put me in a bad situation because
I went to cover the route. They play action, they

(10:04):
ran the ball. It's a touchdown, like you're danged if
you do, danged if you don't, because if you if
you go down to stop the run, he's wide open.
If you go to stop the pass, the runs there.
So you got to just guess it right, and Marlon
Humphrey guessed wrong and then tried to grab him got
the holding call. A masterful game plan by Dan Campbell
and Johnny Morton. They came in with a great plan

(10:26):
to come into Baltimore and win that way.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
WHOA. And that's a.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Confidence builder for this team and I can't wait to
see what they do next. I mean, they got to
be feeling really, really good. Everybody should be feeling good
because this was a quality win against a quality opponent
that a lot of people have going to the Super
Bowl this year.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
I'm right there with you, Rich. You saw coming into
the game, every analyst don ESPN picked the Baltimore Ravens,
So I'm sure there was bulletin board material for Dan
Campbell and the Boys.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Before we leave here, we got some talking to do here.
We got to talk about Nicholas John Bosa. I know
you were casting burning Sage everywhere and then in San Francisco, Seattle.
I even spark them up for you here in Detroit.
It ultimately was worst case scenario for the San Francisco

(12:16):
forty nine Ers. Nick Bosa is out for the season
with an ACL tear. Richard, I know you're demoralized. And
for those just not viewing on YouTube, Richard's currently crying
beneath this forty nine Ers hat on his chair. But
Richard talked to me, I know this has got to hurt.

(12:37):
How do you uplift this forty nine or faithful fan.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Base, Mitchell.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
They've lost their favorite son, the San Francisco forty nine Ers,
Nicholas John Bosa. It's just, oh my god, Mitchell, it's
it's it hurts. It's a friend, it's a it's a brother.
It just sucks.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Man.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
You hate this part of the game. The guy works
his tail off, the guy does it the things the
right way. He shows up in shape, you know, ready
to help his team, and you just hate to see it.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Man.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
I guess that the small bit of good news is
it was a clean tear. He didn't he didn't damage
anything else in his knee. So hopefully they can, you know,
reattach it and are or do what they need to do.
And and and you know there's a lot of different
ways they do the a c L surgery, whether it's cadaver,
whether it's you know, from his patella or you know whatever, but.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Hopefully he has a really speedy recovery.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
He's a guy that you know, embodies what this team
stands for, and it's just a tough situation. But the
kind of guy and teammate he is, he's gonna try
to come in as soon as he can and rally
the guys and tell him it's gonna be okay. He's
gonna be in the meat, he's gonna be in the
training room. He's gonna be there to make sure his

(14:03):
guys know that that he's with him every step of
the way. He's gonna work his butt off all off
season to make sure he's ready for next season, no
question about that.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
But it's just disappointing. You know, this is the part
of the game you just hate.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
You know, this isn't this isn't fanship, this isn't you
know anything. This is just like, Hey, you want the
best for one of your guys, and to see him
go down like this, it's just it's heartbreaking. It's heart wrenching.
You know, it's not about money, he's making his money,
he's got He's gonna be okay. But you don't want
to see a guy get injured work so hard to

(14:36):
be ready for the season and get injured, and it's
a huge blow to this team. I know that that
Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are gonna do their best
to make some necessary moves. I think they'll look at
the trade market, knock on some doors, pick up the phone,
call the Giants and call the Houston Texans and call
the guys who have an abundance of pass rushers and

(14:58):
see if anybody is available and what the price is
for that on a temporary basis. I wouldn't it be
surprised if they call about Brian Burns. Uh, yeah, it's
there's a there's a there's a ton of people. But
it's just a hard thing to think about right now.
You know, you're so on such a high for for
the San Francisco for nine ers to start the way

(15:20):
they have to be as banged up as they have
to have to go to your backup quarterback in the
second week of the season, and for Mac Jones to
play as well as he has and they get him
to wins and potentially be getting brock Party back, potentially
be getting be getting Brandon Ayuk back in.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
A couple of weeks. You know, you you you want
to you want to feel some joy.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
But this, this really really takes the wind out of
the sales for this team. And and you know, faithful,
I would say, just just try to keep your head
up and and and we don't get through this. You know,
they they they're doing everything they can. It's just a
it's just a string of bad luck. You know, it
can't be bad. It can't be bad for eventually things

(16:01):
gotta turn around. Nicholas John Bosa will be okay. Unfortunately
his season is over this year, but the season for
the San Francisco forty.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Nine Ers is not.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
And the guys will fight until they can't fight anymore.
And I believe this team has a chance to continue
to be special. And he will be doing the same
thing and he will want the same thing for this team.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
It's just unfortunate. Oh, Mitchell, it hurts brutal news. Richard.
I feel for you.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
I feel for the forty nine ers fan bas no
question about it. But like you said, Nick Bose is
one of those guys you know, he's gonna be back
better than ever next year when he gets back. But
it's just devastating, especially after such a hot start to
the season. At three and zero, Richard, before we wrap up,
I gotta know, I mean, and maybe you need a
little bit more time to think about this, but I'm
gonna put you on the spot.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
I know there might be some.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Recency bias at play here, but what is the Richard
Sherman top five for this week of your Power Ranks.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
He's us too soon. I'm in tragedy. I'm in mourning. Mitchell, Mitchell,
you just want to do it because of Detroit. Oh Mitchell,
We're gonna go. We're gonna leave the We're gonna.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
Leave the Philadelphia Eagles at one.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
I thought about it. I wanted to move Buffalo into one.
I didn't feel great about Buffalo's performing, so it was tough.
If if, if the Rams would have won, there'd be
a lot of change in the in the top five,
but they didn't. So the Philadelphia Eagles ranning champs, keep
finding a way to win their one. Buffalo Bill's gotta
be two. They're they're doing it. They continue to find

(17:30):
ways to win a tough division, game. Josh Allen continues
to play at.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
M v P level. He's he's two.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
Three, I got they found a way to win a
tough division game. The l A Chargers went out there,
they were losing that game. They showed grit, they showed determination.
Quinton Johnson continues to have his his his showcase, his
his his coming out party, starting to blossom into everything

(18:00):
he thought he would be. So I got the Chargers
at three. Four and five is where it gets tricky.
One and five is where it gets tricky. Minchell, where
do we go for four and five? Because everybody who
has a three n O team is gonna feel like
they need to be there. Every every three n O

(18:21):
team is like, oh, we we deserve to be there.
We deserve to be there, We deserve to be there. Yeah,
they're all three and oh. Teams aren't created equal, And
I want to I want to put you there, the
Green Bay Packers. You guys, I know you want to stay.
I know you want to stay. It's it's hard. It's
hard because I told you guys that the concern I
had was the quarterback situation. So I'm gonna put the

(18:44):
Detroit Lions, who were beat by the Green Bay Packers
at at four.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
You know the good fans are gonna be yelling.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
But Detroit looked good today.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
They they just lost the You wanna yell, yell at
somebody else. Don'tly lose to the Cleveland Browns. I'm jump sorry,
Donna do It makes it hard to put you in
the top five when you're losing to Cleveland Browns. But
at this point, I'm gonna have to leave them in
because nobody else has shown me enough.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
Do I do? I want to go? Do I want
to go? Indiana Jones? Am I that bowl? They are?

Speaker 1 (19:20):
They are on a gut that the Indianapolis coach have me.
It is close to believe it. It might be I
don't want to. I don't want to dive out there
and then pull Hey, they gonna They're gonna pull the
rug from under me. I don't want to do it.
I do not want to do that. But when I
do it, a Green Bay Packers are the Indianapolis Colts.

(19:45):
Change Stiking is really putting it together.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
They really I'm gonna go with the.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
They're gonna masacure me for this. I'm going with the
Indianapolis Coast five hate me all no no, no, no
no no, no, no no no, Indiana Jones, I want
to do it. Are they not legitimate? Oh it's fools gold,

(20:13):
it's fool's gold. Mitchell Green Bay Packer's final answer.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
I'm gone.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
I feel like you called your own bluff.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Richard. Good work man.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
If I couldn't, I couldn't do it. They're close though,
they win again. There they are. I think they got it.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
They got to start like five and oh, just to
give everyone that peace of mind that they actually are good.
But they certainly look good right now. Daniel Jones, Uh,
you know, hey, maybe dark hour horse MVP candidate. Who knows, Richard, if.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
You're putting on Jonathan Taylor, there you go to, there
you go to.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
Well, hey, Richard, this has been a double dip on
the recaps this week, and it's been a heck of
a weekend, capped off with a beautiful Honolulu Blue victory
with my Detroit lines. Richard, my friend sign us off.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
