Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. And what a
game for the Seattle Seahawks and Sam Darnold. Huge play
to Jackson Smith and Jig, but huge game from Jackson
Smith and Jig. But he somehow through eleven games this season,
is the first player in NFL history to have seventy
five yards are more in his first eleven games to
(00:27):
start a season. Also broke the single season record for
the Seattle Seahawks, passing up dk Metcalfs thirteen hundred and
three yards. I believe it was To now hold that
record and to do it in only eleven games is incredible. Mitchell, again,
that defense looks good. They just looks well coached and formidable,
(00:50):
and the d line looks strong. The secondary looks confident.
I'm sure fans will be complaining about how that game
ended because again the Seahawks get up early, they look comfortable,
and then they allow the other team to kind of
just climb their way back in the game. Never never
really felt like the game was in doubt, but Steele
just didn't feel like as dominant as the game started.
(01:13):
They start these games off so incredible and this was
another incredible start. Another road win for Mike McDonald in
this defense, in this offense, the special teams that's been
pretty solid this season gave up a ninety yard punt return.
So I'm sure that's gonna be a coachable moment for
Mike McDonald and this staff. But I feel as good
(01:35):
about the Seattle Seahawks as I felt all season. I
felt good after the Rams game. I feel even better today.
They just continue to just be a steady ship. Sometimes
being who you're supposed to be, beating teams you're supposed
to be is an underrated skill set in the National
Football League, and that's what the Seattle Seahawks are doing.
They're beating the teams they're supposed to be, They're battling
(01:57):
the way they're supposed to battle. Guys are continuing to improve.
I thought this was one of Devin Witherspoon's best games.
I thought Tarik Woolan has since the trade rumors and
all that, has played magnificent football. I know it's not
the interception numbers and the things that fans want to
see and fill in the stat sheets, but he's been
sticky in coverage. He's been locked down, forced a number
(02:20):
of incomplete passes, throughout this game, just was Titan coverage
and forced cam Wood to hold the ball a number
of times. Byron Murphy another game with a sack. DeMarcus
Lorens just a veteran presence that's been dominant throughout this season.
The offensive line. The offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks
(02:41):
has been a revelation. They've been a revelation they've been.
That's a big reason why they are as good as
they are, why the confidence level is as high as
it is. Because when you face it a defense like
you did last week against the Rams, and you're solid,
you hold up solid. You don't hear about the name
players that were supposed to be very disruptive in this game.
(03:04):
We know Sam Darnold struggled and there was some pressure,
but he didn't get sacked a ton in that game.
He didn't get sacked a ton in this game. He
was pretty effective sixteen to twenty six for two forty
four and two touchdowns. Kenneth Walker got it going a
little bit more on the ground along with Sharbonnaye. Sharponnay
was able to find some lanes today as well, and
(03:24):
that's another positive sign for the Seattle Seahawks because that's
gonna be the thing that takes them to the level
of true Super Bowl contenders this season is if they
can balance out this offense. Balance out this offense. We
know you got Jackson Smith and Jigba who's having an
incredible season, who's cementing himself as the best receiver in
(03:45):
the National Football League right now, there are other great
receivers in the National Football League. They're not playing as
well as him. So I know everybody's like, well, this
is just one season. Well, this is that season for him.
He's breaking records all over the place. He's leading the
league by almost two hundred yards and receiving yards, So
you got to give him that kind of credit. Sam
Darnold was doing what he's supposed to do. Some of
(04:07):
these passes are really elite level accuracy, elite level completions.
His poise in this game was much better, and I
think the Seattle Seahawks will go as far as he
will take them. But I think that, like Clint Kubiak
talked about before the game, he's doing a great job
(04:28):
in this game. He did a great job of just
trusting his feet, trusting his eyes, making sure his feet
and his eyes were married. They talked about how how
his feet were telling him they don't throw these passes.
He shouldn't have been throwing the passes that he did
that led to interceptions. His eyes, his eyes were there.
He gave it away. He had a work terrible game.
If he can respond and he can play better against
(04:50):
this same Rams team late in the season, we got
that game on Thursday Night Football in December. I can't
wait to see it. I'm not sure who's a great
matchup for this team with out him turning the ball
over and giving it to another team. I can't see
a team in the NFC that's a great matchup for it.
And I know the Philadelphia Eagles fans will say, what
about us, We're the reigning Super Bowl champs. I would
(05:12):
feel good about Seattle going into that game, and I
know you guys would feel good about the Philadelphia Eagles.
But I think this defense is really solid, complete with
the brilliance of Mike McDonald. I think this offense, if
they can get it going on the ground, and that
would be no easy task against that Philadelphia Eagles defense.
I think this is the most complete team. I think
(05:32):
this is a very complete team and they're gonna be
a tough out for anybody in the playoffs. They moved
to eight and three on the season. The Titans moved
to one in ten cam Awards. Showed some flashes, no
question about it. You got to give him some credit
to he showed some flashes during a very tough season.
He's showing improvement, He's showing that he can get the
(05:54):
job done, and he is the future for the for
the Tennessee Titans, regardless of who the next coach is.
But we'll see how this season continues to go. The
Minnesota Vikings, who've been struggling, have to deal with the
Seattle Seahawks. They come to town to play the Seattle Seahawks
next week. So JJ McCarthy in his troubles travel to.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Seattle revenge game. Richard Sam Darnald. I gotta say this man,
and we talked about it this week. The Seattle Seahawks
won this offseason. In my opinion, you move on from
Geno Smith. It seemed like, you know, Gino had the
Seattle Seahawks in a position where they're always competitive. They
are always a solid squad, but they were never a
(06:40):
true contender. And when I say contender, I don't think
they were a true division contender. You bring Sam Darnald in,
you pay him forty million dollars a year, which on
its surface seems like a lot. But when you compare
that to Trevor Lawrence Jordan Love, these guys making North
a fifty to fifty five million dollars, you want to
talk about a dramatic discount. The Seattle Seahawks got with
(07:01):
Sam Darnold, and he is a guy that I think
can lead them to the promised land, you know, lead
them to a division title, make them competitors and contenders
in this NFC. I truly believe that. And then you
look at JSN. We all talk about yack Kings, right,
the Yak Kings, the Deebo Samuels of the world, the
Golden Tates of the world. Jasen is the yak the
(07:22):
deep ball King, not the yack King, but the deep
ball King. Richard. He ranks ninety nine point nine by
PFF on deep ball Rating. He's number one in the league.
He's got fourteen receptions north to twenty yards.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Richard.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
This guy, I mean, Ohio State went in out draft
in Ohio State wide out. That's my motto. If I
were a GM because these Ohio state wideouts are killing
it in the league. Jsn oh, my goodness, might just
be the best of the bunch. But we've talked about
cam Ward a little bit, Richard, and I disagree with
you wholeheartedly. In fact, I think Jackson Dart should have
(07:57):
been the number one pick based on his performance this year. Yeah,
I know he was out this game against Alliance, but
what I see, the stature, the charisma, the poise, you know,
the winner mentality. I still think Jackson Dart should have
been won one in this draft. I like what I
see out of cam Ward today, But Richard, I'm not
sold on him as the future of this Tennessee Titans franchise.
(08:18):
I think he's gonna be a good player, but I
stand by my word. I think Jackson Dart is the
better pro going forward. I'll let you respond to that notion,
but that's my opinion.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Yeah, I can see that. You know, you can make
an argument either way. Obviously, the Titans have won win
game this year. They'll be picking top three in this
draft coming up, I would expect, so you can make
an argument either way. I think Jackson Dart has a
better supporting cast no question about it. I think their
defense is better their D line. Can't the receivers for
(08:49):
the Tennessee Titans. Can you name three? Because I couldn't
without looking it up. And I can say the same
about the Giants if I'm being honest. I'm not saying
Jackson Dart played with great receivers for the Giants, but
I thought the play calling there, the system in place,
the structure that they play within, was better than what
cam Ward has been given. I'm looking forward to seeing
(09:12):
who the Tennessee Titans hire to help support cam Ward
and push him to the next level. We're hearing about
the Minnesota Vikings fans calling for the firing of Kevin O'Connell,
which I never thought I would hear. Oh my god,
that's these NFC North teams, Metro. I'm sorry. They're just
(09:33):
these fan bases, and I know they're supposed to be
Minnesota is supposed to be such a nice, calm fan base,
but hearing them call for that. The Green Bay Packers
calling for Lafloor, saying the offense is so predictable, we
need to get rid of him and get somebody else, Like,
give me a break.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
I'm Richard If the Minnesota Vikings fire Kevin O'Connell, he
will be hired with in exactly sixty seconds by about
twenty other teams in the league. I mean, that is
their only saving grace with that franchisese the GM made
a dramatic mistake and letting go of Sam Darnold and
intrusting JJ McCarthy to come in and be this second
(10:08):
year coming off the injury savior of this franchise to
take him to the next level. It's not looking good
right now in Minnesota, and I think Seattle fans have
got to be thrilled by that mistake.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
No question about that, Mitchell. And that's the thing I know.
The Seattle Seahawks fans are ecstatic. In the Minnesota Vikings
fans are in the in the dumps, and we're going
to get to them later on in the show. Today's

Lions were in a parn burner of their own. Jameis
Winston came to town, Mitchell, and he put on a
(12:08):
Jameis Winston type show. He threw some balls that were
put in Harm's way that the Lions didn't take advantage of.
They did take advantage of one, but he also put
some up there and put up big numbers, throwing for
three hundred and sixty six yards in this game eighteen
to thirty six, only fifty percent completion percentage but two touchdowns.
(12:28):
But Jamier gives fifteen carries for two hundred and nineteen
yards and a touchdown. Jared Golf. They were able to
pull off the win. Veteran team just finding a way
to win at the end. But who I know. You
were nervous and I told you. I told you to
worry to watch out for him.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
You did tell me, Richard. We talked about this last night.
I did not go to the game today. I had
an opportunity to, but I chose not to. I chose
to have a RESTful Sunday.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Richard.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
I thought it was going to be a cake walk
down at Ford Field, and I was wrong, and you
put me in my place, she said, Mitchell b Lary
of Jamis Winston, b Leary, of Wandell Robinson, Theo Johnson,
Isaiah Hodgens, And I said, Richard, you're crazy, man, but
I might I might have to think a little bit
(13:14):
more highly of your opinion of this New York Giants
football team. Jamis Winston scared the living Bejesus out of
me today, Richard. There was over a thousand yards of
total offense. I'm curious to know how many times in
NFL history that happened. Because it was a wild one
in Detroit. Detroit got down early. They were never in
the lead in this game until they finally took the
(13:36):
lead in overtime. I have a bone to pick with
Dan Campbell and whoever's calling the place for the Detroit Lions.
You have got, i would say, without argument, one of
the top three running backs in the NFL and Jremier Gibbs.
You have got another guy who could be starting on
half the league's team in David Montgomery. You've got a
(13:58):
sonic knuckles backfield right where the heck has been Knuckles.
David Montgomery five carries today for eighteen yards. Last year,
the season before that, he was the one that set
the tone. He was the one that grinded these defenses down,
that set up play action that allowed Jery Goff to
pick apart the defenses over the middle for these eight, ten, twelve,
(14:20):
fifteen yard gains that turn into explosives and Richard, we're
not seeing that right now. The explosives are coming from
Jamiir Gibbs, who carried the ball in an exact amount
of fifteen times Richard for two hundred and nineteen yards
three touchdowns on the day. I mean, my goodness, the
Detroit Lions of the last two years ran the ball
(14:41):
to set the tone, to set up play action. That's
where Jered Goff excels. They've been moving away from that.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
You're down ten early. Who cares? You got to rely
on the run game. Jonathan Vilma was calling in the
broadcast all day today. The Lions need to lean on
this rug game, and they ran the ball twenty times today. Great,
you rush for over two hundred and twenty five total yards.
That's awesome due to two explosives of Jamier Gibbs. Hand
these guys the football. Get back to basics. That's my
(15:12):
that's my call to the Detroit Lions staff right now.
Get back to basics. Let's not rely on Jared Goff
dropping back and heaving the ball downfield. Let's rely on
the run game. Let's get these old lying comfortable. Let's
let these guys that are good run blockers set the
tone early and then resort back to the passing attack.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
I believe the.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Lions, you know, still have a very good chance to
make a solid run, even win this division. Their next
handful of games, you know, against the Packers on Thanksgiving,
against the Cowboys on Thursday Night football, both at home.
You know, those are those are gonna be difference makers.
And the slotting of this playoff run down the stretch, Richard,
they absolutely need to come out with their true Detroit
(15:55):
lyon grip mentality on Thursday on Thanksgiving against the Packers
and the need to take over this division. The Chicago
Bears look pretty damn good. I'm not gonna discount that,
but believe the Detroit Lions are a better team in
the long run. Their schedule is more comfortable coming down
the stretch. It is huge that they were able to
(16:16):
pull off this win. But Richard, I've got a lot
of complaints, as you can tell.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
No I can tell, and I'm sure the other Detroit
Lions fans have a ton of complaints. The thing I
noticed was Janis Winston was very comfortable in that pocket.
I mean there was a little bit of pocket pressure
where things were starting to collapse. You know, some sacks
maybe have been starting to develop. But he was comfortable
and he was comfortable, and he was picking that defensive
(16:42):
part because he was in sacked, he wasn't under as
much dress as he needed. And we talked about it.
You guys need pass rush, and I thought you guys
would pick up a Preston Smith at Zadarius Smith, somebody,
a veteran to help this pass rush be more effective.
The only sack of the game came from Aiden Hutchinson
(17:02):
on the last play of the game, and it short
ended up being a colossal play that ends the game
and closes this game out for the Detroit Lions. But
where is the pressure all game long? This is a
two win line, I mean two win Giants team on
their third string quarterback. We love, all love watching Jamis
Winston play football, but this is not a game. This
(17:23):
is not a team. If you're talking about the Detroit
Lions and Super Bowl contenders, where you would expect them
to be in a dog fight in overtime with Jamis
Winston in the Detroit Lions, and mind you, I saw
Jameis Winston in a dog fight with them last week
against the Green Bay Packers. So there's a lot to fix.
There's a lot of things on this defense that need
(17:43):
to be short up. There's some offensive play calling things.
Jamier Gibbs, if he only has fifteen carries in two
hundred and nineteen yards, everybody's scratching their head about why
he's not getting the ball more. If he would have
got twenty carries, doesn't sound like he would have got
three hundred yards. I mean, gonna been an all time
record breaking day for and to not see that, to
not see him getting that those opportunities and that kind
(18:04):
of production is frustrating. But yeah, I don't know what
they're gonna do. I really don't. It doesn't feel strong.
These wins don't feel strong wins, you know what I mean.
They feel like relief wins, like hey, you won the game,
Like oh God, thank goodness, Like my Sunday is not
going to be ruined. But it doesn't give the confidence that, man,
(18:25):
this is a team I know can compete for Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
I'm with you, Richard. Before we leave this game, I
want to talk about Mike Kafka, the interim head coach
for the New York Giants. I'm a firm believer in
this Giants organization. Like what they've set up, especially with
this offseason, bringing in Jackson Dart, bringing in Camp Scataboo,
you know, bringing in Abduall Carter. It seemed like they've
totally shifted their tone and they've got a bunch of winners,
(18:52):
the guys that like do not want to settle on
anything but winning, And you got to love to see
that from the New York Giants. And I think we
see that a little bit with this head coach of
Mife Kafka. Do you think that they're going to keep
him around based on this performance? I mean, I was
really impressed. I did not expect them to lean on
Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy the amount they did. They
were so hell bent on establishing the run game that
(19:15):
it made life for jamis pretty darn easy. Do you
like what you see in Mike Kafka?
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Yeah? I like what I see in Mike Kafka, But
it's so tough for interim head coach because he he's
not able to come in and develop the culture, you know,
do things his way, run the program the way he
wants to. Yes, he coached a good game. I thought
he gave him a chance. But the same is true
about about Daboll. I thought j Bowl that's the reason
he got fired. He coached some really great quarters, some
(19:42):
really good, great partial games, and then they end up
losing in the end. And I think it would be
different if this was a win and a Giants found
a way to win this game, we'd be having a
much different conversation about about Kafka. But it's for a
Giants fans and for the front Offhans, it's just another
almost win. It's just a other all we could have
had that one. You know, There's probably been probably five
(20:03):
or six of these games for the New York Giants
this season, so I don't think it's enough to really
give him serious consideration. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think
they're gonna go out there and look for look to
to hit a home run with one of these offensive
geniuses whatever the next or defensive geniuses whatever, whoever the
next guy in line is. And I'm not sure who
(20:25):
that is right now, because a lot of the winning
teams have have head coaches that are calling the plays.
I don't think Mike McDonald's going anywhere. Do you do
you do you go for Clint Kubiak in that offense?
I don't think you do. If you're talking about the Rams,
do you go for their coordinator? Nolan McVeigh has a
big hand in that is it is it Shula the
(20:46):
defensive coordinator for the Rams who has them playing incredibly well. Perhaps,
but they won't be the only team in the in
the hunt on the hunt for a new head coach.
You got the Tennessee Titans. You might have the Cincinnati Bangals,
depending on what they do at the end of the season.
So there's a number of teams that will be looking
in the in the head coach hunt. So I'm not sure,
(21:10):
but I think cath is showing himself to be a
really competent offensive coordinator and he'll definitely get another opportunity
to do that.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Another Doozy and ot thriller as well. The Chiefs come
back down eleven points in the fourth quarter and take
care of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts looked like they
were in complete control of this game in the fourth
and they just couldn't get it done. Richard Daniel Jones
nineteen to thirty one for one one and two touchdowns.
There really wasn't a whole lot of explosive plays, but
(21:38):
on either side of the ball, Jonathan Taylor was pretty
well contained. But the Colts looked like they were gonna
win this game, and then the vintage Chiefs of old
resurrected and took care of him in ot Is it
safe to say the Kansas City Chiefs are back?
Speaker 1 (21:55):
No no, no, no, by no means they're sixty and five.
And that was a desk spiration game for them, and
that's the way they played. They played like it was
a playoff game. You saw it in Patrick Mahons' eyes.
You saw it in his demeanor and the way he
went running random football. It wasn't running the football and
slide and try to try to save yards and keep
your body safe. He was dropping his shoulder and trying
(22:17):
to get as many yards as he could. He understood
the urgency in this game and what it would be
if they lost this game. So you could see it
in the play calling, you could see it in the desperation,
the desperation of the offense, the desperation of the defense,
and they battled and they earned a win against a
really tough Indianapolis Coach team who's going to be really
(22:38):
competitive in the playoffs. They held Jonathan Taylor in check,
who's been an MVP candidate all season long, held Daniel
Jones in check. The Coach defense was able to get
to Mahomes and sack him four times, force an interception,
force force fumble, but Mahomes still twenty nine to forty six,
(22:59):
three and fifty two yards. But they leaned on Kareem
Hunt in this game and he imposed his will throughout
the game. He had thirty carries for one hundred and
four yards, but he had that critical fumble deep in
the red zone that almost was the defining moment of
this game for the Kansas City Chiefs. But you just
saw that resilience, you saw the desperation. You saw them
(23:20):
turn into that championship pedigree to tune into that championship pedigree,
that desperate mode. And they're tough to beat if they
play like that. And sometimes you see them throughout the
season where they'll just lollygag through these games they'll just
coast through them like, hey, we've been here before, like
they're board in the National Football League and they've lost
a lot of those games that way. But this game
(23:41):
you saw them, Hey, we're very deliberate, we're very serious
against the team that I think is going to be
competitive late in the season and gonna go to the
playoffs and get a win or two. So we'll see.
This is a big win for the Kansas City Chiefs,
real a tougher loss for the Indianapolis Coast. And you'll think,
because they have the Houston Tech next, who gets CJ.
(24:01):
Stroud back coming off a big win against the Buffalo Bills,
they look good. They look really good. They're six and
two in their last eight games. If I'm not mistaken,
they're six and two in their last eight. They're not
the same Texans team that was zering three to start
the season. So the way that defense is playing, to
watch this coach play this way, that defense is number
(24:21):
three against the run, number three against the pass, number
one in total defense, and number one in scoring defense.
They're gonna be in that game and they're gonna be disruptive.
Those they got two pass rushers over ten sacks already
and daneil Hunter and Will Anderson, so this isn't gonna
be any walk in the park. And in their secondary
they have a budding superstar for the Houston Texans and
(24:42):
Kayln Bullock who had two interceptions in the game this week,
a forced fumble, four interceptions on the season. And we're
not even talking about Derek Stingley and Kamari Lassiter. And
Kamari Lassiter is playing with a different kind of physicality.
We saw a highlight that didn't even involve him defending
a pass. He was coming on coming downhill, taking on
fullback and ragged alling him for a TfL and on
(25:03):
a critical play in the game. So you're talking about
a defense that's running and hidding. Well, the coach could
be in trouble, not because they're not a great team
and not playing great football, but they're just running into
teams that are really really rolling right now. And I'm
looking forward to that game. That's probably gonna be the
game of the week next week. The Chiefs have the Cowboy. Sorry,
I don't doubt you at all.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
I was so impressed with the Houston Texans on Thursday night,
and I know you got to see him firsthand on
Thursday Night Football there, Richard, you even got to sit
down right with with not Derek Stingley, but Caden Bullock
and Kamari Lassiter. I mean, how cool of an experience
is that. I know these guys are too young, young
bucks in the NFL just finding their footing, but holy cow,
(25:44):
they have changed that Houston Texan secondary into an absolute juggernaut.
And I think they're really carrying this team. And you
couple that with Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter. I would
not want to be playing against that team right now.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
And no question about it, they're gonna They're young, and
they're hungry, they're both only in their second years, they're
best friends, and they're playing at a really high level.
Sometimes it just takes a little bit more, a little
bit of information, a little hint here and there to click.
And we were having a conversation where we were doing
to sit down interview, and I was just telling Kaylin
the conversation I had with Tamiko Ryans after well during
(26:19):
practice on Wednesday, and it was just his hesitation and
it was hesitation and I've been there before. I haven't
been there in the league because I decided in the
Senior Bowl. I played with a lot of hesitation. In college.
I played games where I was like, oh, man, I
studied really hard. I'm getting a formation. I see the picture.
I've studied, but I'm still not believing it. I see
(26:42):
all it should be a slant on display, and instead
of just driving the slant and believe in it, I'm like,
but what if it's a slant and go and then
the guy runs a slant and catches the ball and
I tackle him and it's bang bang play, But it
still split second decisions. That's the difference between an All
Pro and just a good player and just a solid player.
And I told myself when I didn't get invited to
(27:03):
the Combine, and I didn't, I ended my senior year
and I didn't have an invite to the Combine, I
didn't have an invite to any any All Star games
or anything. I said, if I ever get an opportunity
to play again, I'm gonna I'm gonna work my butt off,
I'm gonna study the tape, and I'm gonna play without hesitation.
And that's what I told him. And after the Senior Bowl,
I played really well in the Senior Bowl. I got
a late invite after after somebody got hurt, and I
(27:25):
played out there with no hesitation, and that earned me
an invitation to the Combine. And when I got to
the National Football League and got my opportunity, I never
played with hesitation. I trusted that my film study and
my preparation all week was legitimate. And if I saw
the looks I'm looking for, if I if I got
the formations and the splits that I was looking for,
then I'm gonna drive the play that I believe it is.
(27:46):
And I told that's Kaylen Bullock during that interview that hey,
you just got to trust it.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Man.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
You can't work hard all week and and trust it
and practice trust it and walk through and trust it
and all these other scenarios and get in the game
and not trust because then you killing the point that'll
drive a coach crazy. Trust it. Just trust your work
in preparation. You've earned the right to make that play.
And if you don't make the play, or they run
a double move or they do something different, at least
(28:12):
you can go to your coach and say, hey, I
base this off of all the work we did in practice.
It looks you gave me the film I study, and
that's why I drove the coach, and a coach can
understand that and say, okay, I understand that, good job.
Just keep better eyes on that play. But when you
do all that and you hesitate and you don't make
the play, they cannot accept it. And in that game,
he did not hesitate at all, and I don't think
(28:32):
he will hesitate going forward. He's going to be one
of the best safeties in the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
Love it, Love it, Richard. The Green Bay Packers, this
team has been middling for a while. They've been winning,
but it has been just surviving advance, survive in advance,
nothing nothing, earthshocking. The Minnesota Vikings came into town with
the aforementioned JJ McCarthy and looked terrible. Twelve of nineteen
(28:58):
for eighty seven yards and two in q BE rating
at thirty four point two. Richard, where do we start?
You want to start with the Green Bay Packers? You
want to start with these lowly Minnesota Vikings, who unfortunately
beat my Detroit Lions a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Yeah, because that's that's Menchell.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Embarrassing.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
It's really embarrassing. And that's another conversation for a different day.
But that's a reason why there's hope in the Minnesota Vikings.
That game. That game, your Detroit Lions gave false hope
to this Minnesota Vikings fan base. But I want to
talk about the Green Bay Packers in this game because
they scored twenty three points, Jordan Love fourteen to twenty one,
one thirty nine, sacked once, but they ran Wilson twenty
(29:40):
eight times for one oh seven and two touchdowns. Christian
Watson had five catches for forty nine yards. And I
keep hearing Green Bay Packers are too predictable. They're too predictable.
It seems like the defense just has our playbook. I
don't know how many times I have to say this.
I don't know when it's going to be more apparent
to your fan base. They do not trust the quarterback.
(30:01):
They don't. They don't. Your coach does not trust your quarterback.
This Minnesota Vikings team, and Brian Floor is aggressive, exotic,
He can bring a lot of pressures from a lot
of different ways. Your offensive line is banged up. I
understand these are all factors that Lafloor is taken into
(30:21):
account when he's calling these plays. He's not just saying, hey,
we got a great offensive line, we got all these
great receivers and a great back. Right there, Josh Jacobs
isn't even playing. It's not like he ran Josh Jacobs
twenty eight times. He felt the need that to run
Emmanuel Wilson thirty I mean almost thirty times in this game.
And the reason is the offensive line is banged up.
(30:43):
But I also don't want to put my quarterback in
a position to lose as a game that we should
win easily if we just lean on our defense in
our run game. That's how you play when you got
a quarterback you don't trust, or a rookie quarterback, not
a quarterback. You're playing fifty five million, and you think, hey,
this is one of the most dynamic players in the
National Football League, this is one of the most elite
(31:04):
players in the National Football League, and he can go
out there and help us take us to the next level.
They don't believe that. If they believe that, they would
call it differently. Now, don't get mad at me, don't
I'm getting tired of arguing with these fans. That's what
the tape says. That's not what I'm like. I'm saying
what the tape saying. If he was throwing the ball
forty five times and running at twenty five and saying, hey,
(31:29):
you know we're trying to do all this and he's
getting sacked or you know, make mistakes, then I would say, hey,
you know, he's calling the plays for your quarterback. He's
just you know, it's just not working out, or he's
not calling the right plays, or they're making mistakes. He
doesn't trust him. He doesn't trust him, and he doesn't
want to put it in his hands to lose it.
You're paying him a lot of money to throw it
(31:50):
twenty one times four one hundred and thirty nine yards.
And if we look at the game before, if we
look at the game before, and that's what I'm going
to do, I want to go back because I want
to get the stats right, and I want to debate
these people anymore, because it's getting frustrated because these it's
it's average after average after average after average, and I'm
and I'm being told that I'm doing I'm saying something crazy.
(32:11):
He was thirteen for twenty four for one seventy four
and two touchdown passes against that against the Giants. It's
not a crazy game. I thought, a we're earth shattering game.
This this Giants defense isn't the best in the world.
And then if we go back again another game he
played the Philadelphia Eagles, a game that you was a
rematch up the playoff game from last year. He was
(32:35):
twenty of thirty six for one seventy six, no touchdowns,
no interceptions. I'm sorry, guys, I'm sorry. There's those aren't
earth shattering. And the same thing that can make you
laugh can make you cry. Every the Green Bay Packers,
everybody eats. It's the same thing the Buffalo Bills are saying,
(32:57):
everybody eats. We got all these group receivers. We can
just spread it around in know who the best receiver around.
How's it working out? Is working? Is it working for you?
You think it's the good strategy steal? Is it working
for the Buffalo Bills? No, because it doesn't work. You
have to have a big doll, not a bunch of
little dolls. Big dogs. And if you don't have a
big dog, there's no fear of the defense from anything
(33:17):
you're doing offensively. Whether you have a big dog in
the backfield or a big dog on the outside, it's
going to be tough for you to take the next
step offensively until you have a big doll. Get a
big doll. And last time you went to the NFC Championship,
Davonte Adams was there, big dog. Yep, that's how you
(33:37):
got there, big doll. A guy that.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
It's the same reason Aaron Rodgers left. There was Davante
Adams and nobody else, right, And that was his chief complaint,
What are we doing not helping our offense? Richard Jordan
Loves making fifty five million dollars a year? Am I right?
Speaker 1 (33:58):
Right?
Speaker 2 (33:59):
He completed the ball fourteen times today. If my math
serves me correct, every completion is worth two hundred and
thirty one thousand dollars this game. He makes over three
point two million dollars a game. I would expect a
lot more from my quarterback than fourteen completions. I could
break down the numbers further, but I don't want to
(34:21):
whip out a calculator too many times. He only had
a one hundred and thirty nine yard passing And I
get it. They were up all game. They were playing
this low Lea Vikings team. But my goodness, I'm with you.
Jordan Love you'd expect more. I think he's a good player.
But this brings us back to the Sam Donald conversation.
Who would you rather have on your team money? Aside
(34:42):
Sam Donald or Jordan Love, I'd rather have Sam Donald.
Then you factor in a fifteen million dollar discount on
top of that. I'm sorry. I'm with you, Richard. I
think the Green Bay Packers are good. I don't think
they're great. And until they add two weapons to this
team to help accelerate Jordan Love's development, I think that's
(35:04):
where they're going to be for a while.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
But that's what they tried to do, and they tried
to Matthew Golden. They drafted him in the first round.
They got Christian Watson, who's getting healthy. Sure, they lose
Tucker Craft, they lost Tucker Kraft. But Tucker Craft was
having a great season because he was turning a little
bit into a lot. He was turning check downs into
big gains and touchdowns. It wasn't like Tucker Craft was
just down the field running big time wouts all the
(35:28):
time and catching all these down the field passes. He
was turning yak yards into a lot. But when you
pay a quarterback that amount of money, he has to
be a difference maker, never a guy that you have
to protect. If you're paying a guy that much money
and you have to protect him with the run game,
you have to say, hey, we don't want to we're up.
We don't want to throw that much. Could you imagine
(35:51):
the Chiefs being like, and the chief don't pay Patrick
Mahomes that much. So that's the whole story for a
different day. But Joe Burrow being up, you know, two
touchdowns and be like, hey, we can't throw too much more.
We don't want to put him in harm's way. What
what do you mean you don't want to You don't
want to put him in harm's way? Throw the ball?
Why if we don't need to throw it with him,
(36:14):
why do we have it? That's the questions you got
to be asking yourself. Green Bay Packers fin can with
this team. If you didn't have Jordan Love and you
replaced him with just above average quarterback play, let's take
names out of it. Above average quarterback play? Would it
be Willis? Malik Willis Malik Willis comes in and spells
(36:34):
Jordan Love from time to time has played solid football
because the floor can draw it up. But if you
put somebody else in there. Let's let's go down the
list of quarterbacks that I guess would would fit that
that that category up above average quarterback play. I mean,
(36:56):
I guess we just go through the guys weren't making
fifty plus million? If you if you put if you
put Herbert in there, is that your boy?
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Your boy Trevor Lawrence?
Speaker 1 (37:06):
If you put Trevor Lawrence in there? Sure? Sure? Are
they a worst team? Are they still as the record
the same? I don't know. I really don't like Baker Mayfield.
Baker Mayfield's playing at a high level. If you put
Baker Mayfield in there, but he's not making fifty five million.
If you put Baker Mayfield on this team, are they
a better team? Potentially? That's the concerning part. Potentially. That's
(37:31):
the thing that I do not like about this Green
Bay Packers team. Their defense, Yes, they got after it today.
Michael Parsons was double team and making sacks on the play.
Their defense was getting after it. They sacked the quarterback,
They intercepted JJ McCarthy twice. They looked the part. Good
job from Jeff Hafley, who will be a head coach
candidate this season. I hope he gets a job because
(37:53):
he's a good friend of mine. I think he's doing
an outstanding job with his defense, and he's an outstanding
leader of men. But for the fans to keep turning
on these coaches, because these quarterbacks aren't who these fans
believe them to be, it's just laughable and and I
almost wish they would get the realities that they hoped
(38:14):
for so that they could see that it is your eyes,
this evening you not these coaches. These coaches aren't just
calling these plays because they're like, I want to hold
this guy back. I highly doubt Matt Lafleur is going
into this like I don't want I don't want to
make Jordan Love look too good. He's gonna outshine me.
That's not what he's doing. He's like, how what do
(38:35):
I have to do so that the Green Bay Packers
walk out of here with the win today? And that's
what he's doing, whether you like it or not. And
Kevin O'Connell on the other side, Minnesota Vikings fan, you
can do a lot worse this. The thing that may
cost Kevin O'Connell his job is the decision to walk
(38:56):
away from Sam Donald and play JJ McCarthy, and I
said it before. It was a mistake, and I don't
want to keep I don't want to keep beating a
dead horse because it's not fair to JJ McCarthy. But
he's been put in an unfair situation, which I said,
when you go in and you have a fourteen and
three season and your fans start to start to flirt
(39:17):
with the idea of winning a Super Bowl, they start
flirting with it, Mitchell, and then that quarterback struggles in
the playoff game and they go home early. They have
such negative thoughts about that quarterback because of how it ended,
and they say, man, we need somebody to take us
to the next level. They're so desperate to get to
the next level that they take five steps back and
(39:39):
they don't even realize it because they think different is better.
They don't think better is better. They think different is better.
So they find hope in different instead of understanding. Hey,
Sam Donald, that's been put in a tough situation with
an offensive line that was struggling all season long. He
got pressured, he didn't play a good game, he got
beat by a better team. Come back, revamp your offensive line.
(40:05):
Work on that, because that's the reason why he was
under such dress and go at it again and let
your young quarterback who you drafted in the first round develop,
but you thought different was better. So now you've got
a young quarterback with unrealistic expectations from the team, from
the fans, no matter how much they screen patient's patients,
(40:26):
just be patient with the kid. You have unrealistic expectations,
and then you have unrealistic expectations of an offensive line
that you try to improve. Now you've lost Darasol, who
was arguably your best best offensive lineman. You're gonna put
this quarterback behind a patchwork offensive line now that Sam
(40:48):
Darnold had to deal with all season last year and
turn it into fourteen wins. But now they're the problem,
and that's the reason the quarterback's not developing. And now
Kevin O'Connell doesn't know how to call a game when
he's protecting a young quarterback from having a worse outing
than he would have if he didn't protect him, because
he doesn't want you guys jumping down his throat. And
(41:10):
all I'm saying in this is he's not playing well enough,
and he wasn't going to play well enough in the
first place. There was nothing that he did at Michigan.
Just because he won a national championship does not mean
he's an NFL starting caliber quarterback. I'm sorry that quarterbacks
have won national championships and not been nothing. And then
(41:30):
you could do the Tom Brady comparison all you want,
but Tom Brady got taken in the sixth, not top ten.
He wasn't productive in that way. He played well enough
in big games. He did not turn the ball over,
he did not throw the game away so that Michigan
won the national championship. He's a fine human being, I'm sure,
but we're talking about the football player, and the football
(41:52):
player is not prepared for this moment. So no matter
what you guys want to say, that's the truth of
the matter. And he could have benefited from another year
of sitting behind an NFL quarterback, which Sam Donald has
proven himself to be and it is continuing to prove
himself to be in Seattle. They're now eight and three.
So that's the part that's frustrating to me, is that
(42:14):
everybody's turning on these coaches when when we were just
talking about Kevin O'Connell being the quarterback whisper him and
McVeigh and Shanahan are the guys that turn quarterbacks who
nobody wanted into cinderellas. But now they're saying, oh, he's
not good enough. He doesn't make good enough decisions in coaching,
(42:34):
Like he made the decision. Who made the decision to
go from Donald to Was that a team decision? Who
did that? You know? Because you go from fourteen wins
to potentially pick it in the top ten of his draft?
Speaker 2 (42:45):
Richard, they got greedy. Bottom line, they looked at money.
They said, do we pay Sam Donald this amount of money?
Do we get a rookie contract or a quarterback on
a rookie contract and run this thing out for the
next four years and then we're on our super Bowl.
Though they got greedy, fourteen and three wasn't good enough,
Like you said, different was better in their eyes. I
(43:06):
love that analogy, and unfortunately for the Vikings, it's gonna
take a while from them to regroup and reload. If
JJ McCarthy's looking like this, let's stay in the NFC North, Richard.
These Chicago Bears are eight and three under Ben Johnson.
That is wild expected after the shellacking they took in
Detroit losing by twenty plus points given a fifty two
(43:27):
points in Ford Field. They've gone on this absolute unbelievable run.
Capped off with a three point win against the Pittsburgh
Steelers today. And I know the Steelers, you know, aren't
the best team in the world, but they're competitive, especially
on the defensive side of the ball. The Chicago Bears
give up a defensive touchdown JJ Wild with a great
stripsack in the end zone, and the Steelers looked like
(43:49):
they were gonna win this thing. And kudos to Caleb Williams.
I mean, I know he's taken a lot of heat.
He's in a strong market in Chicago, but he's risen
to the occasion. Two d and thirty nine yards, three touchdowns.
You know, DJ Moore had a nice game with two touchdowns.
They drafted Kyle Mnung guy out of Rutgers. Who's who's
(44:09):
really looked like that that hammer that they need running
between the tackles. What what do you think of the
Chicago Bears team eight and three? Do you think that
they are, you know, legitimate contenders in the NFC or
they just a feel good story.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Well, it's so hard to gauge who they are because
they so many of these games they've started all so
slow and made fourth quarter comebacks and battled back and
just scratched it and call out their way. But eleven
games in there, eight and three, and we get to
have them this week week. We get to have them
(44:45):
this week, our next week Friday on the Black Friday
game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That'll let that'll tell the
story going against the raigning Super Bowl champs. You're eight
and three Philadelphi for everything they've done this season, looks
like they'll win this game. They're blowing up Dallas Cowboys
(45:05):
out twenty one nothing right now, they got a chance
next week to prove it versus the raigning Super Bowl champs,
who've been having a really strong season of their own.
Could be a potential eight, you know, eight and three
team versus a nine to two team, which is an
incredible matchup late in this season. And we'll see. Because
(45:26):
Caleb Williams has one of his better games this season,
nineteen to thirty five, two thirty nine, three touchdowns. He
did have the fumble, but Manung Guy twelve carries forty
eight yards in a touchdown. Dj Moore two touchdowns in
the game. Believe it or not, they're first in your
(45:47):
NFC North and they're looking like one of the most
consistent teams. I mean they're winning now. I can't say
the most consistent team because nobody's consistent, but the fact
that they're in it in there and they're and they're developing,
and they're finding ways to win and close out ball games.
They're building winning habits in Ben Johnson's first year, and
(46:09):
that's what you want to see if you're a Chicago
Bears fan. I'm sure they're tired of getting a heart
attack every game. But if you're going to get a
heart attack every game and come out with a win,
they can live with it. And they got another win
Soldier Field. Obviously, the Steelers were without the Hall of famer.
They were without the Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, but
(46:32):
who knows when he's gonna come back. And Mason Rudolph
twenty four to thirty one one one, one touchdown, one interception,
fum with the football. Kenneth Gainwell had had an incredible
play on a fake push push that was a really
really cool play and I think more more teams are
going to find ways to run similar versions of that
play because it was so effective. But that defense had
(46:57):
played well the last few games, and they didn't play well.
You know, Caleb Williams had his way. So I think
the Bears believe they can play with anybody. We'll see
how true that is, but they've found a way and
I look forward to them playing the Eagles and then
the Green Bay Packers, and after those two games, we'll
have another conversation about if they're truly the legitimate contenders,
(47:19):
because those two teams they're gonna play in the next
two weeks are legitimate contenders. And the Steelers are going
to have to find a way to beat the Buffalo
Bills and beat the Baltimore Ravens, both teams fighting for
their playoff lives. That's why I love this end of
the season because so many things can happen.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
You know who the Chicago Bears played the last week at.
Speaker 1 (47:38):
The season, Richard did Detroit Lions.
Speaker 2 (47:41):
They sure do. These NFL scriptwriters have it have it down, Pat.
I mean, before we leave this game, if I were
to tell you that the Chicago Bears would be eight
and three under Ben Johnson in his first year, how
shocked would you have been? At the beginning of the season.
Speaker 1 (47:57):
I'd be really shocked. I'd be really shocked, man. So
on a scale of one to ten, my shock level
will be at a seven point seven because usually in
the first year, after a team struggles the way they
did last year, you're not expecting them to know how
to win games, to know how to close out games.
Especially in a strong division like the NFC North. You're thinking, hey,
(48:19):
three of these teams won what twelve games last year,
or so three playoff teams you got. The Minnesota Vikings
won fourteen games. The Detroit Lions looked like a juggernaut.
The Green Bay Packers get Micah Parsons and look like
the freaking it look like a team that that's worn
to go to a super Bowl, and then you look
(48:41):
up in it. In eleven games in the Bears are
at the top of the division. You would have colored
me crazy.
Speaker 2 (48:50):
Let's talk about another team that has shocked the world
this year. The New England Patriots are now ten and two.
Richard defeating the Cincinnati Bengals. The expectation was THEMT for
to win this game, and it came down to the wires.
Since he had the ball late in the red zone.
Could have had an opportunity to score and go ahead
for the win. Credit to Drake May and this New
England Patriots team. They got down early. It was similar
(49:13):
to the Lions game, got down early, gave up a
pick six. I believe they were down ten points early
on and they came back took care of the Bengals
who were without Jamar Chase. Your thoughts on this New
England Patriots team. They were tested over the last couple
weeks with better opponents and they're going to be playing
the Giants next week. Their schedule is just kind of soft.
(49:35):
Do you believe this team is a true AFC contender?
I believe they sit as the number one seed right now,
if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
I think they're the only ten win team out there.
And that's the biggest part. They're the only ten win
team in the NFL right now. And so yeah, give them,
give them all the criticism you want for having a schedule,
but that's not in their control. If we're going to
criticize and criticize them for the things that are in
their control, but there is not a lot to criticize
(50:04):
this team about because they're winning and every big test
they've had, whether it's the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo, they've passed.
They beat the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. They beat the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in offense that you expected to be
able to challenge these guys and challenge Mike Rabels defense,
even the Bengals. The Bengals Flacco has been lighting it
(50:26):
up this year. Obviously, they're without Jamar Chase and because
of the suspension for spitting on Jalen Ramsey, they lost
t Higgins in the game. They lost a lot of
players in this game. But give the Patriots credit. They
are winning and the culture and the way Mike Rabel
is winning and the way that he's he's speaking confidence
in his players, all these cast offs you have on
(50:47):
his defense, the way Christian Gonzalez is playing, the way
all these guys are playing. You got guys like Chase
On who was a former first round pick that uh
the the Jacksonville Jaguars let go and let walk away.
You got you got guys that that have played other
(51:09):
places and been let go and they came here and
Mike Grabel gave him a shot. He's he's only playing
with guys who have bought into his culture. He said
that that's the reason they traded away Keon White to
the San Francisco forty nine ers, and these guys. You
could see it after every game, after every win or loss,
(51:32):
he's given a hug to every single player as they
entered the locker room. He's not he's not he's not
just talking to talk. He's walking the walk. He's out there.
Guys understand. They respect how how how high of a
standard he holds his team to. And I think that's
the important part. That's the part of football that's beyond
x'es and O's being a motivator, being a leader of men,
(51:55):
being a person that can take clay and mold it
into something special, that can take a man and and
really push him to achieve his highest peak potential. And
that's what I think Mike Rabel is getting. And that's
the part of the New England Patriots that I can
believe in, is that these players believe something that the
(52:16):
rest of the world does not. They believe they're super
Bowl contenders. And if they can and if Mike Rabel
is getting these men to believe that each and every week,
they're going to be a tough out in the playoffs,
because it's tough to believe and get a team to
believe something that they don't like. It's tough to tell
them that they can't be champions when they believe they
(52:37):
can and they go out their work and they've seen
this this formula work out of twelve weeks, they've seen
it work ten times. And Drake May hearing MVP chance
this season in every stadium he's gone to. That means something.
A guy who's developing into an elite quarterback in the
(52:57):
National Football League before your eyes. They they're starting to
develop a run game. Hunter. Henry has his best game
of the season. Seven catches for one hundred and fifteen
yards in a touchdown, the defense and interception in the sack.
They've won nine games straight for the first time since
twenty fifteen. When you know who was playing quarterback then,
the same guy who played quarterback in New England for
the last couple of decades before everything kind of fell apart.
(53:23):
It's hard for me to root against this team, Mitchell.
They got the Baltimore Ravens, I mean, they got the
New York Giants Knicks, and you, of all people can
speak to that team and how you know, the record
doesn't speak to how good of a team that is
and how much of a challenge that's going to be.
But I think the Patriots gonna feel good. They're gonna
(53:44):
be favored in that game.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
No question about it. If they keep at this pace, Richard,
they're going to get the one seed and then they're
going to be able to prove to the world whether
they truly belong or not. I mean, Cam Newton called
the Patriots run fooled scold, and I think that's easy
on its surface to say that based on the schedule,
but the reality is, I mean this team, coming from
who they were the last couple of years to who
(54:06):
they are now, I don't think you can call it
fools gold. I think this team has showed showed true toughness, resilience,
and Mike vrabel is at the forefront of that. Like
you said, I'm a believer in the Patriots, whether it's
this year or not, I think they're gonna be in
that true contender category for the next five to ten
years as long as Drake May's around. They found themselves
(54:29):
a real one at quarterback and they've got a great
head coach. I'm loving what I'm seeing in New England.
Let's talk about the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
Let me let me just on Cam Newton's fools goal,
because it's it's I like Cam Newton. I like what
he's been able to manufacture in his post playing career.
I think he's he's a good analyst and he does
some really fun things. But fools Gold is just such
a lazy and short sighted take. You know, It's like, oh,
they had an easy record, so they're not playing well.
(54:58):
Like I need context, I need I need you to
help me understand. If you told me the Bears were
fools Gold, I'd say, I don't know about that, but
I could see you say, hey, they were down in
the majority of their games. They were losing the majority
of their games. Sure, they found a way to come back,
but is that sustainable in the playoffs. I'm not sure.
We'll see, but I want to see. I wish he
(55:19):
would would have expounded on what about them as fools go?
Is it just because you don't think they're talented enough
team and that their easy record is has has been
a mirage, and so their their their wins are a mirage,
Like this is a National Football League and this this season,
more than any season in recent memory, has shown parody
(55:41):
in the National Football League. Anybody can beat anybody. We
watched the Miami Dolphins beat the Buffalo Bills, we watched
the bank we watched the Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles,
like anything can happen on any given Sunday in the
National Football League, especially this year. So when he says
it's fools gold, it's hard for me to support worth
that without context, without you saying that, hey, fundamentally they're
(56:05):
flawed because of this. They're playing good defense, they're playing
sound defense. Offensively, Drake may is playing really good football.
It's not like, hey, they're getting a lot of tip
passes and he's just getting lucky lucky play here and
there are they're living off yat or something like that.
They're playing in a sustainable way, in a way that
(56:28):
you can sustain and playoff football. So I when he
says the fools going, I just can't. I don't see
it that way.
Speaker 2 (56:36):
And not to mention, they got Treyvon Henderson, the rookie
running back at Ohio State, who's really come on the
last couple of weeks. They now have a ground game
to back Drake May. So I'm with you, Richard. I
like the Pats, and we'll see how they do the
rest of the season. We'll see how they fare against
you know, true competition, if that's what Cam Newton wants
to see. But now let's talk about this Ravens team.
(56:57):
They started the season off one in five. A lot
of people, including myself, were wondering if they were out,
they were gonna lose this division. I thought there was
too bunch to overcome. That didn't take long. Five weeks
later and they're now back on top of the AFC North.
That did not take long at all. I know this
is an easy question to answer, but is it safe
(57:18):
to say that the Baltimore Ravens are gonna win this division?
Speaker 1 (57:20):
Now? I don't know. No, it's not safe to say
nothing's safe in the National Football League right now. So no,
it's not safe to say they're gonna win AFC North
regardless of how well they've played five straight. Congratulations, that's
really great. But their next game is the the Cincinnati Bengals,
and then they played the Pittsburgh Steelers. They control their
(57:42):
own destiny. Now, can they go in there and beat
the Bengals? And beat the Steelers. Sure, can they lose
to the Steelers and lose to the Bengals. It wouldn't
surprise me either way. This is gonna be a struggle
towards the end of the season for a lot of teams.
It's gonna be a grind. I don't think there's any
givens right now for any team. So I'm looking forward
(58:02):
to the way this plays out because there's no predicting anything.
If it was predictable, then you know people wouldn't watch
the NFL and the way they do. I think the
reason the ratings are breaking records is because every team,
in every game, you feel like they have a chance. Sure,
there are some blowouts, there are some games that get
out of hand early, but for the most part this season,
(58:25):
even teams that seem overmatched are undermanned in these games,
go out there and compete and potentially upset the other team.
So I don't know, because do the Bengals show up
in a big way and throw our does Flaco turn
the ball over? Or are they going to play against
Are they gonna play against Joe Burrow? Is he gonna
make his debut versus the Baltimore Ravens. There are so
(58:48):
many different storylines and teams haven't given up on the season,
so the Ravens should be proud of what they've done.
But there were some plays. Obviously there's some rust still
being knocked off for Lamar Jackson thirteen to twenty three
for one fifty three. He didn't look phenomenal fantastic in
this game by any stretch of the imagination. Sure they
won the game because their defense forced to fumble, got
(59:11):
three sacks, another interception. They played well enough and put
enough pressure on the Jets and Tyrod Taylor to win
this game. But this is the Jets. They've won two
games on the season. They haven't looked great the entire season.
They traded away their two best players at the trade deadline,
so I don't even know if this is a barometer
(59:33):
for what the Ravens can be. And I'm not sure
the Ravens. You know, with the Jamar Chase being back,
they'll be different, and potentially Joe Burrow being back, they'll
make it a game, no question about it. But no,
I don't think you can count this this division done
at all. What a day metro for Shador Sanders. He
(59:53):
gets his first start and obviously perfect time and that
perfect time. I don't know if you heard the song, Metell,
but they were playing it during the broadcast Perfect time,
and it gotta feel good to have your own song playing.
Why you playing your Hall of Fame dad in the
stands watching you ball out? Had a number of explosive
passes in the game. Did throw an interception that he's
(01:00:15):
gonna want back, an easy play to fix. He didn't
look off the hook defender, the buzzer buzzer hook or
whatever you want to call him, but he didn't look
him to the flat guy read his eyes threw it
right to him, But that can be corrected. They the
Browns did some weird things in the game with Judkins.
I mean it worked out. He got two touchdowns in
the game, but a lot of wildcat taking the quarterback
(01:00:37):
off the field. Most quarterbacks get pretty frustrated with that.
But shir Door Sanders was eleven or twenty two oh nine,
a touchdown, an interception, and was only sacked once. He
had a screen pass that went for about sixty yards
to Samson. Jerry Judy caught one of his explosive passes
(01:00:58):
and just looked way too nonchalant fumble to football Miles Garrett.
Though Miles Garrett breaks the single season sack record for
the the Cleveland Browns with seventeen, he ended up with eighteen.
His eighteen getting his eighteenth sack. He had three sacks,
two forced fumbles. The defense had ten sacks in the game.
(01:01:21):
I mean they beat they beat poor Gino up in
this game. It Gino was twenty seven to forty one,
eight touchdown but sacked ten times. I mean, he's gonna
be a nice tub all next week, I would imagine.
But if you're a Browns fan, if you're a suardor fan,
if you're if you're a chardor enthusiast, because there's only
(01:01:41):
you know, so he's so polarizing. I think, I guess
the subject of Chador is so polarizing that you're either
you love him and you'll support him no matter what,
or you're waiting for him to fail and everything you're
critical of and you think he's bad and you're waiting
for him to make the big mistake, and you don't
think this is good enough to start for the Browns,
and you think that they should start Dylan Gaber or
(01:02:04):
whenever he gets healthy enough to play. But if I'm
on the outside looking in up semi objectively, because I mean,
I'm not objective. I'm a Dion fan, so I'm a
Chadora fan. I was watching him at Colorado, but I
can see it if he played back why you wouldn't
want him to play. But it just seemed like he
brought a different element to the team. You could just
(01:02:25):
see it on Miles garrett face when he completed the
long pass that should have been a touchdown that led
to their second touchdown of the game. He just he
was in disbelief. And I mean, you're talking about Miles
Garrett being in disbelief, It's crazy. But I feel like
the team played inspired football. They played with hope, They
(01:02:48):
played excited. They were excited to be out there. Not
that the Browns, being three and eight, have much of
anything to play for, but I definitely think this earned
Shador Sanders another start, no question about that. I think
you get better with reps, and he needs more reps.
He needs to get out there, he needs to take
(01:03:09):
his chances. It looks like he's just he really wants
to push the ball down the field every single chance
he gets. They protected him pretty well, Jerry Judy is
gonna have to not fumble the ball in that situation
so he can continue drives. Judkins gonna continue the success
he's had and who knows. The Browns play the forty
(01:03:32):
nine Ers next. That's a big game for both sides,
a game the forty nine ers are gonna need to have.
They played a Carolina Panthers tomorrow, as we know, which
is a huge game. If they can win that game,
this is gonna gonna end up being a really, really
pivotal game for them, and they'll have to deal with
Shador Sanders and all that means. So I'll say this,
congratulations to Shador Sanders on his first NFL touchdown. Even
(01:03:56):
if it's a screen that goes for sixty yards, Hey,
you get it. How you live it up being a
sixty yard pass, four touchdown, fun game for him. I
look forward to seeing him. It's exciting when he's part
of the game and he's part of the discussion. Whether
you love him or hate him, it's good for football
and it's good for the Browns. And the Browns get
their third win of the season against the Raiders, who
(01:04:18):
will continue to struggle look like they're gonna pick top
three in the draft this year, no question about that.
Hopefully they don't fire my guy, Pete Carroll. Please don't
fire him. Please don't fire Pete. It ain't his faun,
it's not a great team. I'm biased.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
You're not wrong, Richard. Don't fire Pete. Don't put him,
you know, don't make him the sacrificial lamb out there, Richard.
Before we leave this game, we got to talk about
Miles Garrett. You said it, franchise record best eighteen sacks
through eleven games. He's on pace for almost twenty eight
sacks this season.
Speaker 1 (01:04:51):
Richard.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
That is mind boggling. Where does he stack up in
your mind against the all time pass rushers in this league?
Is he nearing the top the list at this point?
Speaker 1 (01:05:01):
I mean, if he goes and gets twenty eight sacks
this season, he's gonna he's gonna make the name. He's
gonna make the decision easier for a lot of people.
And again, I hate the whole conversation about who's the
best of all time when I didn't watch the other
guys play, and I'm not gonna give not that those
other guys weren't great, and Reggie White and obviously Lawrence
(01:05:21):
weren't great players, but I didn't get to watch them,
you know, and so I can say recognize their greatness
and how everybody else the esteem they're talked about and
things like that, but I didn't get to watch him play.
And so the guy I'm watching play the SAC record,
(01:05:41):
I think it is twenty two maybe twenty two and
a half. I think JJ Watt tied it one year.
And so if Miles Garrett beats it by five and
a half sacks, that, I mean, that's silly territory on
a team that's rarely leading. Usually you get that if
the teams you know, your team's always up, and you
(01:06:02):
get the pass rush every game, and you get the
Mitchell his team's always in a dogfight or they're losing.
It's rare time, really, a time when Miles Garrett is
just getting to pin his ears back. Hey we're up
two touchdowns, let's go after him. They got a pass
obvious pass situations. But he's just one of the most
dominant players in the National Football League, in the history
in the National Football League. So you tell me, Mitchell,
(01:06:26):
you tell me. I guess time will tell. But he's
obviously one of the best to ever played this game.
Speaker 2 (01:06:32):
No question about it. And then finally, Richard, we had
a lot of good games today, but this one might
have been one of the best of them. Dallas, down
twenty one in the first half, comes back in shocking
fashion and upsets Philly twenty four to twenty one with
a walk off Brandon Aubrey field goal to end the game. Richard,
these Cowboys look a lot better than they have in
(01:06:55):
the last few weeks. George Pickens looks like he's got
a Pro Bowl season brewing, Javonte Williams career resurgence in Dallas,
and Dak Prescott looks like he's having fun out there again.
The Cowboys are five to five and one right now,
and it seems Jerry Jones's mid season trade has helped
this team. Are you starting to see the light with
(01:07:16):
Jerry's moves right now?
Speaker 1 (01:07:19):
Uh? Yeah, yeah, you can see. You can see the vision,
no question about it. But I guess the big story
is the offense. You got to give the defense credit.
They did not allow the Philadelphia Eagles to score a
point in the second half. That should be applauded, that
should be celebrated. That's a huge deal. For the Super
Bowl champs, not to score point in the second half.
(01:07:40):
But the offense you're talking about, George Pickens, you're talking
about a Pro Bowl caliber season. I'd be really surprised
if he's not a Pro Bowler, and maybe he'd get
a couple of All Pro votes just because it's it's
the Dallas Cowboys, it's one of the biggest markets in
the world. He's playing really good football, He's playing good
in big moments, and if this team can can scratch
(01:08:04):
and claw their way back into playoff contention, that'd be huge.
Dak Prescott twenty three to thirty six, three fifty four,
two touchdowns. He did have the one interception, but again,
this is what Dak Prescott is capable of. The concerning
part for the Dallas Cowboys honestly has been Ceedee Lamb
and them able to have this success. With Ceedee Lamb
(01:08:25):
having seven registered drops in the last two games, he
had three in this game, including one and the end.
So so them being able to overcome those those issues
and play as well as they have, especially in the
second half, and able to capture this momentum against the
reigning Super Bowl champs, the division rival in Dallas. You
(01:08:45):
could hear the fans into it the entire game. A
season that looked like it was lost early on, it's
starting to look like it may you know, they may
have a chance. We'll see how it continues to progress.
But for the Philadelphia Eagles, this game started off as
a dream scenario and then slowly but surely deteriorated. You
(01:09:10):
look up and you say, Aj Brown has been really frustrated.
They got him involved early. He had a touchdown early on,
got his yardage end up with eight catches for one
hundred and ten yards in a touchdown. You feel really
good about that. You felt really good about how much
they got Aj Brown involved. Againe Kwan Barkley non existent.
Ten carries for twenty two yards. That doesn't make a
(01:09:31):
lot of sense. And that has to be soft.
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (01:09:34):
The offensive line? You got to give Dallas credit because
they got some run stoppers. Now they got some run stoppers.
Quinn Williams is not is not getting moved out of there.
They're not getting moved out of there very easily. They
got guys who can detackles that are great against the run. Stout,
I mean great against the run. They're stout. They can
pass rush, but Sakwan Barkley only getting ten carries for
(01:09:57):
twenty two yards is going to be the issue. That'll
be the Achilles. He'll that ends and dooms the Philadelphia
Eagles this season if they do not get that corrected.
And again, Kevin Patulo, these are questions he's gonna have
to answer. When they had Kellen Moore, not that he's perfect,
but the offense ran it hummed. You talked about Offensive
Player of the Year Saquon Barkley, you were talking about
(01:10:19):
Jalen Hurts, his potential MVP candidate. Jalen Hurts had a
really good game twenty seven and thirty nine to eighty nine,
a touchdown. He was only sacked once in a game,
but it was a huge sack on third down by
a DIGGI Zua played that they needed on a I
think this was their last drive of the game, which
allowed which forced them to punt, and I gave the
(01:10:40):
Dallas Cowboys a chance in this game to go down
and kick the game winning field goal, which they did.
I don't know what the answers are, but I know
that the Philadelphia Eagles are playing on Black Friday, and
they got the Chicago Bears coming into town. Both teams
are eight and three. It's got to be the game
in a week. It's a match if I'm most excited
(01:11:01):
for a Chicago team so eager to prove itself in
a Philadelphia Eagles team that's got a lot of turmoil,
and I'm sure that this will not help what's going
on in me Locke Room.
Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
No question about it. And let's be real. The number
one seeds up for grabs at this point too in
that game, So you know, this is a huge game
for both teams. We talked about it off air, but
the Eagles, you know, kind of fell apart in that
second half of twenty one to nothing, and the Dallas
Cowboys just kind of leaned down him and leaned down him,
(01:11:33):
and finally they broke giving up eighteen points in that
fourth quarter. And you've expressed concerns about the D line,
the interior of the D line for the Philadelphia Eagles,
and their over use, the amount of time that they're playing.
What do you make of this? The lack of depth
at the defensive tackle position for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 1 (01:11:55):
It's concerning, and in every one of their losses you
could see that's the issue in the fourth quarter. That's
where they give up a majority of their points because
they're playing Davis and Carter too much. Usually, when you're
talking about d tackles, you talk about sixty five percent
of the plays, maybe seventy percent of the plays. There's
a good rotation, you put other guys in there, you
(01:12:16):
spell them sometimes, But these guys are playing a very
high percentage of the plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, and
they're wearing down by the fourth quarter and a lot
of these games not because they're out of shape or
because oh man, they're not ready for these moments. They're
probably in the best shapes of their lives and they're
playing at a high level for a majority of these games.
But you cannot expect guys that big to play that much.
(01:12:38):
It's just how it's just been proven in the NFL
for so long. You gotta have some depth, you gotta
rotate them in and out, allow them to get breathers,
allow them to get rest so they can be strong
and healthy and fresh in the fourth quarter. And that's
not what's happening for the Philadelphia Eagles. So a lot
of these games that you see are coming down to
the wire and although Jalen Carter and Davis are making
(01:13:00):
plays down a stretch, they are playing a lot of
snaps and you cannot expect them to be as dominant
as they would be if they had a little bit
more rest and when they were a little fresher. But
you can tell the Philadelphia Eagles don't trust the other
guys that they would be bringing in, and that's why
they're forced to play that much. Hopefully they can get
(01:13:20):
it figured out, but again, the trade dead lines passed,
they're on really any big time free agents I'm sure
out there that they feel good about. So this is
how it's gonna be. But that's right now. The biggest
issue for the Philadelphia Eagles is they're not able to
get the same pass r us the same stoutness against
the run on the interior defensive line because they're so
(01:13:43):
worn down late in these games. And you look at
the Denver Broncos game, they scored eighteen unanswered points in
the fourth after not after scoring i believe seven the
entire game through three quarters. And then you look at
this game and the Cowboys score ten answered and going
to win this game. And again, you gotta find a
(01:14:05):
way to to to spell these guys and allow them
to be fresher in the fourth quarter and also find
some offense. All odds and lines come from our partners
at hard Rock Bet. We've got the Panthers versus the
forty nine Ers on Monday Night Football tomorrow. Hard Rock
Bet has the forty nine Ers and seven point spread
(01:14:25):
in this game. I think the San Francisco forty nine Ers.
It's gonna be a little closer than that. This is
gonna be a field goal game, Mitchell, in my opinion,
just because of the way Bryce Young played in the
last game, especially near the end way, he was able
to come on the chemistry he's building with Tetraroa McMillan
and Ricodoudo. Rico Daldo is starting to starting to show
(01:14:48):
himself as one of as a really good runner in
this in this league and has taken over as their
number one back. It's gonna be a closer game than
you want to, you might.
Speaker 2 (01:14:57):
Think, Richard, I can't pick a better time to debut
this hat. Take a look at this bad boy man.
I like that Krispy right, Chrispy, Yeah, Well, it's because
I got the Niners winning. I got the Niners covering too.
I know you think that it's going to be a
tighter game. You know, within seven points. I got the
Niners covering that spread. I also have Christian McCaffrey continuing
(01:15:21):
his dominance, scoring the first TD of the game. Plus
Rico Dowdle. Holy Kyle, like you said, what are resurgence
from this guy? Cast off from the Dallas Cowboys comes
over behind Chubba Hubbard in Carolina and has taken over
that backfield. I think he's going to score a touchdown
as well. And here's a bonus. I think Brian Robinson
(01:15:41):
Junior gets a TD as well. I mean they've been
giving him the ball inside that five yard line. I
expect Brian Robinson to get another one. Carolina has given
up thirteen red zone rushing touchdowns this year, Richard. So
there's your helpful hint with Brian Robinson to score, Richard,
big big news. In San Francisco, everyone was waiting for
(01:16:02):
the comeback of Brandon Ayuk. Well, I don't think that's
gonna happen. It looks like they're parting ways. How stunning
of a move is this? Are you shocked by this
or is this something that you saw coming?
Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
Metell Unfortunately, I had a little bit more inside information,
so it's not a shocking for me, but it's shocking
that it's going to play out this way because this
scenario at this point the season helps nobody. And I'm
not blaming any particular person. I'm not blaming BA, I'm
(01:16:37):
not blaming the forty nine ers, et cetera. But I
think BA coming back and doing his best to play
as well as he can helps the San Francisco forty
nine ers, and it helps Brandon Ayu. I think the
position of Brandon and I you not playing anymore this
season and the San Francisco forty nine ers now like
(01:17:01):
that doesn't help anybody. If BA doesn't play this season
and he gets cut at the end of the year,
that does nothing to help anybody. And I think if
he doesn't play, that's the most likely scenario. But I
just don't understand why that would be the case. Why
you would make that decision as a player, And everybody
has their own reason for reasons for doing things, But
(01:17:24):
if you're a player and you want out, I don't
agree with this. I don't want to help this team.
That's understandable, but your interests are aligned Unfortunately, you doing good.
You doing well helps the team do well. The team
doing well and you doing well helps everybody. It helps
increase your value so that if you do want to
(01:17:45):
go to another team don't want to trade you, theyn't
want to trade for you, instead of instead of you
getting cut and your salary going away and then signing
you to a much lower deal where you make a
lot less money and it will take you a lot
more time to make the same amount of money you
would have made if you were able to just stand
on the contract your own. So if you're Brandon Ayuk
(01:18:07):
and you're like, hey, I don't want to help this team, okay,
but helping them helps you. So going out there and
being the best possible receiver you can be, showing that
you are the receiver that you were when the San
Francisco forty nine ers paid you thirty million dollars a
year only helps your case, even if you want to
(01:18:29):
go somewhere else. But sitting out does not. Sitting out
put your pride before your pocket. And if you put
your pride before your pocket, that's something I cannot understand
because it doesn't help your family, it doesn't help you,
and it doesn't help the point you're trying to prove,
(01:18:51):
and so that's the point I don't get. I hopefully,
hopefully he's able to get out there and play and
show what he can do and either continue with the
San Francisco forty nine ers or or get traded and
be able to make the money that he deserves somewhere else,
because I always want the guys to make the money
that they've earned, and I never want to see a
situation where a guy is giving money back. Well. As always, guys,
(01:19:13):
we appreciate you joining us. You could be anywhere in
the world, but you're here with us and we sure
do appreciate it. We'll see you tomorrow night after the
San Francisco forty nine Ers game. Stay tuned.
