Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the Herd. Happy Monday, everybody. It's me Jason
McIntyre in for vacationing colin Cowherd. I'm joined by Alex Curry.
Very exciting day. We got Alex a lot of news
NFL stuff happening fast and furious. You do anything awesome
Over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I actually had like a pretty mellow I'm like the
crazy Dog House right now. We have four dogs at
our house right now. So yeah, just relax, hung out
around town, watched a lot of sports, watched USA, watched
Massy's debut, and a lot of baseball talk.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
A little soccer here at some baseball as well. Fun
weekend unless you're an NFL running back. Not great, not great,
they say, I do want to start the show there.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
It's weird.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Usually we talk about quarterbacks in the off season. You
guys remember last year. Of course, massive quarterback, I mean,
Russell Wilson has a new home, Matt Ryan changed venues,
Carson wentz to Washington, there was the Aaron Rodgers drama.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Usually we talk about quarterback drama, and there is.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
None this offseason other than Aaron Rodgers going to the Jets,
and everything's kumbah yah over there. There isn't one quarterback
controversy in the league, and there's really nothing sexy about
the rookie quarterbacks. None of them are expected to do great.
So we're turning our attention to the guy who touches
the football the most after the quarterback, and that's the
running back. And ladies and gentlemen, I don't know how
(01:20):
you spent your Saturday night, but NFL running backs got
together on a zoom call for this big to do
about their perilous position. We all know that there's a
bunch of twenty eight year old talented running backs currently unsigned.
Dalvin Cook doesn't have a home, he's talented player, Leonard Fournette,
(01:41):
Ezekiel Elliott, Kareem Hunt. None of these guys are signed.
And then you've got Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs kind
of holding out.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Well.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Austin Eckler apparently led this call.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Shout out to Austin Eckler a man of action, not
just words, men of action, and unfortunately it didn't go great.
Here's Nick Chobb, the best running back in the NFL
of the Cleveland Browns, talking about that huge zoom call
over the weekend.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Right now it's just tall. You know, there's really nothing
we can do. We're kind of we're kind of handcuffed
with the situation. But I mean I felt what I
took from it. McCaffrey and Derek Henry and Say corn
I had a lot of good points. But the biggest
thing is that we're on position that our production hurts
us the most. You know, if we go out there
and run for two thousand yards with so many carries,
the next year, they're gonna say, you know, you're probably
(02:26):
worn down. That's the biggest thing that I took from it.
It's just it's tough. You know, it hurts us just
to go to go out there and do good. It
hurts us at the end of the day.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Boy, that is extremely disappointing, but accurate. It's almost like
a new car, you know. I've talked about it on
my old Saturday radio show. One of my favorite books
of all times called The Millionaire next Door, and it
said never buy a brand new car.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Just never do it, because you.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Drive it off the lot and it instantly goes down
in value, depreciating asset. I only bought one new car
in my life, and I did it when I was
a young single guy trying to impress girls. News flash, guys,
the ladies aren't impressed with the new car. They don't
and if they are, probably not the girl you want
at any rate. You know, Nick Chubb is spot on.
The running backs are in a tough spot. They really
(03:10):
can't do anything. I mean, what are they gonna do
like Galvanizes like Voltron and say, guys, let's all hold out.
Let's no running backs show up to training camp. That'll
show them. Unfortunately, something like that's not gonna work because
there is always someone ready to come in and say, you.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Know what, I gotta put food on the table.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I will gladly carry the football in Arizona or Atlanta
or wherever you want. There's guys in the usflow that
will gladly take the jobs. So ultimately, this comes down
to the individuals. Enter Saquon Barkley in New York. We
know Josh Jacobs with the Raiders. Listen, they're gonna be
bad whether he plays or not. Saquon Barkley is the
(03:49):
one guy who maybe kind of controls his situation. Now.
I have said a lot of nice things about Saquon Barkley.
I do believe he should have been paid by the
New York Giants. But if you're in Barkley's camp right now,
a lot of people are gonna say, Saquon, sequ you
don't want to become the next Leveon Bell.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Remember what he did?
Speaker 1 (04:09):
He held out in Pittsburgh, said I want to get paid.
You're not gonna pay me. Okay, I'm out, ends up
with my New York Jets. And I saw Saquon with
the Jets. Didn't go well. He did not look good
at all, and essentially his career just petered out.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
After that.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
He had a shot with the Chiefs. It didn't work out.
But what's interesting about Saquon's case is Leveon Bell was
in Pittsburgh with Ben Roethlisberger, a really strong offensive line,
and this receiver in his prime by the name of
Antonio Brown. Okay, you lose Saquon, that team's still gonna
be good. That's still a playoff team. Oh sorry, If
you lose Leveon in Pittsburgh, that's still a playoff team.
(04:44):
You lose Saquon in New York not the same thing.
And that's where it gets interesting for Saquon Barkley. I'm
gonna put the schedule up here of the New York
Giants early in the season.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Take a look, ladies and gentlemen. Okay, if you go
by the.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Opener against dalla Us, you know they're at home. I
think Dallas wins that game. Giants are at home, but
they don't home field. The vantage against the Cowboys give
him the Arizona win. What's gonna happen in those next
four games? San Francisco clearly better, will be favored. Seattle,
you could call it a toss up. In New York
they got to go to Miami and Buffalo back to
back games.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
They will be underdogs.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
There's a real chance they open the season.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
One in five. Is that possible?
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Can you see a one in five? And then what
one in five knows Saquon Barkley, Then what if you're
the New York Giants. So again, it's tough for me
to sit here and say, hey, Saquon hold out, you
should do it. But listen to one of his teammates,
Xavier McKinney, who was a safety at Alabama. He uh,
he wore the green dot on the defense last year.
He calls the players on the defense very integral player
(05:46):
on the defense. Listen closely to what Xavier McKinney said
about Saquon Barkley situation.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
For me, you know, I've talked to him, and regardless
of any decision that he makes or whether he's there
or whether he's not there, I respected one hundred percent.
I'm behind them one hundred and I wouldn't have no
you know, no hard feelings, no, no nothing towards them.
Speaker 7 (06:06):
You know, whatever.
Speaker 6 (06:07):
Decision that he decides, obviously you know we want him
to be there. But if he can't, you know, we
understand that as well. And I think you know that's
not just for me, but that goes for a lot
of guys in our locker room. So I just don't
want that to be the narrative of you know, if
he decides not to come, then nobody's going to be mad.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
You hear that closely, a lot of guys in that
locker room. I just told you he's one of the
defensive leaders on the team.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
So I'll give Colin some credit.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
He's been early on this, but we are shaping up
to have a fractured locker room in New York, and
I know Saquan's talking to talk about maybe I sit
out the opener against Dallas, saqua maybe you push it further.
And again, it's easy for me to sit up here
and take Saquan, don't take paychecks for the first seven
weeks of the.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Season or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
But you know, if you want to be a principled
guy and you want to say, you know what, you
guys shafted me. I think a lot of players in
that New York locker room, based on what Xavier McKinney
just said, would understand. And I will remind everybody this.
Daniel Jones has been in the league four seasons. His
first two seasons, he was a turnover machine. Led the
NFL in turnovers, interceptions, and fumbles. They've slowly ticked down
(07:14):
every season. Last year he threw a whopping fifteen touchdown
passes and had the fewest turnovers of his career.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I think we attribute a lot of that to Brian Dabole.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Why is that? Brian Dabeles said, Broy be a game manager.
We're not forcing anything. We got Saquon Barkley. It's sixteen
hundred yards some scrimmage. Again, it's easy for me to
say up here, hey, Saquon, do this, But I'm just
telling you guys right now, the most important guys in
that New York Giants team. Number one Brian Dable, the
head coach. He's an offensive genius. Number two is Saquon Barkley.
(07:46):
Daniel Jones would be number three. I firmly believe if
Saquon sits out, they open one in five. New York
will have a new outlook on what it thinks will
be happening this season. With Saquon Barkley. I want to
quickly pivot to mister Leonel Messi. I don't know how
you guys spent your Friday night, but I was watching
the Women's World Cup and then Messi comes on around
(08:08):
the fiftieth minute on a different channel, and I'm toggling
between the games.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Oh boy, So you guys know, I'm a big soccer guy.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
I own part of a team in the top league
in Mexico and I follow soccer closely. I called my
kids over to make sure they watch the Women's World
Cup as well as Messi and this game, Messi's game
is one to one.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
We're late in the game.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
I'm like, guys, this is feeling like one of those
moments like Messi comes to the league he goes to
the worst team in MLS. The into Miami is a
total disaster, and this is shaping up as one of
those moments guys where like I'm telling my kids, like
when I was a kid, I would go in the
basement with uh you know, we had the little nerf
hoop on the door, and I would.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Count down the clock.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Five seconds left, fake dribbling between my legs, macintar fade
away three and it would miss or clang off the rim,
and then I get the ball again. I do it again,
four seconds three the bank and maybe it goes in
and I'm celebrating. I'm the hero, the victory is mine.
I know you guys have gone in the backyard, right.
You know my brother didn't want to play wiffleball with
me or whatever, so I would just toss the whiffle
(09:12):
ball up, take the bat and try to hit home
runs and be like Joe Carter hitting an unbelievable home
run memorable in the World Series. Did Kirk Gibson walk off?
Who can forget that? And we want to be the hero.
If you've ever played sports Man, it is a great feeling.
The opposite feeling would be I'll never forget my club
soccer career when I was a young guy ended. We
(09:33):
were in this state tournament. This was in Virginia and
we went to penalty kicks. I was nervous as hell,
and I could see like we had some good young
players coming up and this is probably gonna be my
last year.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I was a late bloomer.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
I was getting knocked off the ball. It was frustrating,
and I missed my PK and the dejection it was real.
But the opposite is also true. And what MESSI did
on this free kick, and I believe the ninety third
minute to win the game was one of those sports
moments that we live for. If you like sports, you've
ever played sports, this is the stuff dreams are made of.
(10:08):
Here's the messy moment here. It is.
Speaker 7 (10:12):
My father.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
That happens, and I am I'm sure Alex was freaking
out too, but I know at my house, I was
freaking out, like just bedlam, and the kids are just like.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
This, this is really happening. Let me just think about it. Okay.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
The guy turns down over a billion dollars from Saudi
Arabia to decide, you know, I'm gonna go the worst
team in the MLS because I want to live near
in South Beach, and who knows, maybe we'll make something happen. Now, listen,
Messi's had a billion great moments in his career. This
is probably not even a top ten moment for Messi.
The guy just won the World Cup with Argentina. Okay,
he arguably was the greatest soccer player ever. I would say,
(11:00):
he is. I know a lot of people want to
go Pele Maradona.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
I get that.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
At my gym.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I would go there.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
There was like a food stand and I would go
to get like a smoothie drink, and the guy who
was working there for years was in Argentinian and I
would always be like, oh, Messi's the man. He's like,
no way, Maradona won a World Cup. Messi's never won
a World Cup. So of course, you know, as soon
as Messi wins a World Cup, I go in there.
I'm like, Messi, he's the greatest now and the guy
(11:27):
starts laughing, and Messi's done a lot of great things
for me.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
This moment right here.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
It was less about the MLS and the exact moment.
It was a Legas Cup game, which I don't want
to get into but like, it was a big win
for Miami and the fans.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
But you guys know who else was there?
Speaker 5 (11:43):
Right?
Speaker 1 (11:44):
You saw Lebron Kim Kardashian not as important, but you
know the camera loves her and.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Lebron hugged Messi.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
I saw they gave each other a shout out on
social media, and one of our smart producers today was like,
you know what, Messi's kind of starting something in Miami
the way Lebron had his little heatls. Hey, guys, come.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Down to Miami. We're not gonna win, not one, not two.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
And now all of a sudden, Messi's bringing some pretty
renowned international players to come play for inter Miami. Maybe
there's something cooking there and it's fun. But I don't
know about you, Alex. I absolutely love that moment. That's
everything sports are about, at least to me. And again,
this isn't a highlight of Messi's career, right, this is
(12:25):
way down the list. He's done some amazing things. But
as a sports film watching that, I just I love
though every moment of it.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
It was a magical debut.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
It's exactly what you expect and what everyone knew he
was going to bring to the game. It's why ticket
prices won up ten times. That's why Juria sales went insane.
That's why the value of Inner Miami just blew up.
The moment that he signed there. I was watching both
this game and the us fm esnational game at a
soccer bar underground, and the whole place just erupted. I mean,
(12:54):
there was just so much passion and love. And I
think Messi can be the guy that really takes US soccer,
the MLS to that next level where it is across
the world. We were kind of the last place where
it's not as big as it is in other countries
around the world. But he he has a chance to
really change that. And we saw the magical moment in
(13:17):
his debut on Friday.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
The closest I ever came to any kind of you know,
moment like that. I played in a New York City
men's league for basketball, and you know, you'd go to
gyms around the city and we were down two with
like five seconds left, and I hit like a thirty
foot three pointer, and of course the crowd goes wild.
There was no crowd. It was just like the ten
guys in your mind. Yeah, and it was just one
(13:41):
of those ones and my guys ran up to me
and picked me up and.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
I felt like a hero. Was an amazing moment.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
And it's like, can you I can't even fathom what
was going through Messi's head as the stadium's erupting.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
I mean, social media goes.
Speaker 7 (13:53):
On what he does. He's the best.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
This is like, this is why you you bring somebody
of his caliber over to the MLS and to the
United States because moments like these are his bread and
butter and what he does. And you know, the moment
he steps up, something special is gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Yeah, and next up on The Herd listen, I mentioned
Lebron was at Messi's game, Folks, Is there a new
beef between Lebron James and my guy Steph Curry.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Don't go anywhere, It's The Herd.
Speaker 8 (14:21):

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Okay, I know the NBA is on hiatus. We're just
waiting for Dame and James Harden to figure things out.
James Harden notably not at one of his teammate's weddings
over the weekend. Well, we may touch on that later.
But my guy, Steff Curry. You guys know, I'm a
huge Curry fan. I've told the story a ton, just
a great ambassador for the NBA. He's doing a little
(15:00):
media tour. I don't know if we're gonna be able
to get him here on the show. Unlikely about his
new Apple show, I forget the name of it, but
apparently it's it's pretty good. I watched about half of it.
I haven't finished it. And he's doing a media tour.
And Steph Curry was asked, because this is how you,
you know, generate interest, Steph, name your all time starting five.
(15:23):
And I don't know if Steph Curry gave this much thought.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Maybe I'm being too sinister here, but.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Steph Curry left one big name out of his starting
top five. Okay, Steph had Magic Johnson, understandable, Michael Jordan,
Kobe Bryant at the three. I guess Tim Duncan and
Shack Now almost all of those guys played in the
same era.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
There was a little crossover with Tim Duncan.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
I think in the early two thousands, Shaq went a
little longer, Kobe went a little longer, and it's let's
say it's a fine starting five. But you know what
the big picture takeaway is on social media? Whoahoa, he
left Lebron off the list, Jay mac He's got Lebron
number one all time. A lot of other guys got
Lebron number two all time. Lebron's even on the starting five.
(16:13):
Curry's taking a shot at Lebron. And then you give
it a little more thought. You know, that's the surface
level stuff that basic Jabroni's will give you on the internet.
So think about it a little deeper. Curry left himself
off the list. I think a lot of people would
put him on there. I'll get my top five and
a sec or my starting five in a second. But
what if Curry views himself on Lebron's level like more
(16:39):
of a peer than I'm looking up to Lebron. What
if Curry says, you know what, we've kind of dominated
the league for the last I don't know, ten years.
You could argue there's a capable argument to be made
that what Curry and Lebron have had over about a
decade span was pretty much what Bird and Magic had
(16:59):
in the There's a real argument for that. I mean,
Curry and Lebron have dominated the NBA. Interestingly, they have
the same number of titles. Interestingly, Curry is three and
one against Lebron in the finals, now three and two
overall because the Warriors lost to the Lakers in this postseason.
But it's entirely possible, ladies and gentlemen, that Steph Curry
(17:22):
views himself as an equal to Lebron, and I don't
think there's anything wrong with that. You could make a
legitimate argument that Steph Curry was the more impactful player
in terms of changing the game during his career than Lebron.
I mean, you could argue Curry changed a game more
than a lot of the guys on his starting five.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Like I know, Lebron was ushering in the super teams.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
But I've argued this on the show and again, I
know I keep using the word argue, folks. When I
was a young guy, I wanted to be a lawyer.
You know, I really thought I was gonna be lawyer.
I could argue anything. I'm seeing a lot of that
in my kid. A little frustrating to deal with it now,
But I digress, And you could really look at curry
career and say, yeah, he changed the game more than Lebron.
And Curry has beaten Lebron head to head in the finals,
(18:05):
but Jay, he had Kevin Durant for two of those. Okay, okay, fine,
you beat him in twenty fifteen, lost to him in
twenty sixteen. Then Lebron, him and Curry have like a
I don't want to say frenemy situation developing because Lebron
has gushed about Curry and Curry's gushed about Lebron. But
I do wonder if Curry said I'm closer to Lebron
(18:25):
than the masses think. I know, it's tough to think
of because Lebron is sixty nine or six eight or
sixty nine and like two fifties, like a tank, and
so Curry's his wispy below the rim, six foot three guy.
But on my all time starting five, I have both
Curry and Lebron. Now I love Magic Johnson, but he
doesn't make my list for my modern starting five. Curry
(18:49):
for shooting MJ an incredible two way player. I have Lebron,
who's a facilitator. I have Larry Bird again, this is
my modern starting five, Arry Burtill, step out and hit
the three and then get your ten assists in a heartbeat.
And then I have Wilt a bit of a surprise
seeing that you know, Wilt's career ended well before I
(19:10):
was even born. But when everything you look at for Wilt,
I would love to see Wilt go head to head
with Shaq. This is a guy who is from his
time just utterly dominant in every facet. And I get
my just one big and you could theoretically play with
four out. Although Lebron's not a great shooter, but that
starting five is impenetrable. There is no holes in it whatsoever.
(19:32):
I know, you could make a credible argument that Tim
Duncan somewhere belongs on this list. I like Duncan a lot.
I like Larry Bird for the modern game. The shooting,
my starting five shooting would be incredible. But I think
it's worth monitoring the Curry Lebron, whatever it is that's
going on there, because these are two seminal players in
the league over the last you know, thirteen fifteen years,
(19:54):
Lebron a little bit longer, and I just wonder ultimately
if they view themselves on the same level. I know
Lebron thinks he's way up here, but just it's worth
keeping an eye on. It's going to Alex Curry with
the news.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Turn on the news. This is the herd Line news.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Jay Mackett's actually very on brand with his new show
called Underrated.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Oh yes, yeah he does.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
Yeah, but he always has been kind of just not
thought of and talked about on that same level as Lebron,
but definitely has been Yeah.
Speaker 7 (20:25):
Yeah, interesting.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
All right, Well let's get to the NFL and start
in the NFL where Bill's running back Nahem Heines is
expected to miss the twenty twenty three season after suffering
a knee injury away from team facilities.
Speaker 5 (20:36):
Now.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
He was reportedly sitting on a stationary jet ski when
another writer crashed into him. He sustained serious but non
life threatening injuries and will require surgery. Now, this is
just heartbreaking for Hines. A freak accident, and in moments
like these, you're just thankful it's not life threatening because
when you kind of visualize something like that, we were
(20:57):
sitting there on a jet ski.
Speaker 7 (20:58):
Another jet ski runs into you. Could have been a
lot worse, but just brutal.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Also for the Bills kickoff training camp, not having one
of your guys there more running back, unfortunate news, just
kind of adding to why they want to.
Speaker 7 (21:12):
Get paid now.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Anything can happen, you never know, but it's just it's
just heartbreaking.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
I think he was the one who had the kick
return in the first game back after the DeMar Hamlin situation.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Very good, multiple.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
Skilled running back catch a lot of passes out of
the backfield, special teams and the sad state of where
running backs are now, Alex. I wonder how many agents
of other running backs instantly called the Bills and said, oh,
Heines is out. That's terrible, so we have are you interested?
I got Dalvin coc online too.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
It's a business, it is, And like.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
Again, the Bills aren't gonna want to pay who they
get because Heines is you know contract I'm assuming was.
He's not one of the highly compensated players. Here's that
kick return, I believe, And it's just it's one of
the those situations where, yeah, like can you imagine now
if the Bills say, well, let's go get Dalvin Cook.
And now you got digs Cook, who used to be
teammates in Minnesota. You got Josh Allen and it's like, okay, fine,
(22:10):
well we can't afford Dalvin Cook. We'll go Kareem Hunt
like you're not Kareem Mon's a very good player. Fournette
still out there, Ezekiel Elliott. So yeah, I feel awful
for Hines a jet ski injury.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
I wonder if other uh, you.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Know, agents out there are just like to their running backs, Hey,
can you just get in some bubble wrap here heading
into camp.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Well that's the thing too, because I know a lot
of athletes in the contract. There's certain things you can't do, right,
But I don't imagine jet ski being one of the
things on there.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
I haven't jet skied in a while.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
It doesn't feel that dingo.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
But well, I mean it is bead R's vehicle, like
on the water, and if you're not in control. And again,
it wasn't him. Someone crashed into him. He said he
was sitting a stationary So he was just sitting on
the jet ski and someone ran into him.
Speaker 7 (22:56):
Yeah, just a freak accident.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
That's brutal right, I know, all right, well, let's move
on to the NBA, because James Harden sent another message
to the seventy six ers following his desire.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
For a trade.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Now, he recently removed the team from his social media
bios and posted an Instagram story saying it's time to
get uncomfortable. Harden was also notably absent from Joelle Embiid's
wedding on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (23:19):
It's also housing and Burgers.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
But this is going to be real awkward when he
ends up back at camp here.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
Right, because here's the Hamburger video.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Yes, yeah, like like buy seventy six ers, not going
to come to my teammates, my store teammate's wedding.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
But we don't really have context on where this is doing.
Is that looked like that looked like PJ Tucker at
the very end, but harder Harden looks like he has
been working out. He doesn't appear that dowe in the video.
I like how he's just wearing the plain white tank top.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
Oh, looks like everyone's in a tank top.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
It looks hot as head wherever that is.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Yeah, but it's just I mean again, it's still very
up in the air. If the seventy six Ers are
going to trade, and they've made it no that they
have to get something of value in return. And Harden
did say if he doesn't get traded, he will show
up to training camp. But after a move like this
taking the team off of your social media bios, you
know he doesn't want to be there, and so you're
going in to camp with the mentality that you don't
(24:16):
want to be there. Nothing good ever comes from that.
When you have one of your star players publicly say
I don't want to be here, remove you from their
social media, and then you're still kind of porse with them.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
He really put it's time to get uncomfortable. Yep. You
know I because I'm kind of an impatient guy. I
started doing yoga a few years ago, and great yoga teacher.
His big thing was you've got to get uncomfortable. You
got to get uncomfortable, and I get it. With yoga,
there's some positions that are uncomfortable and like painful.
Speaker 7 (24:45):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
What does hard and mean.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Alex By it's time to get uncomfortable? What does this
mean like like my strip club trips, no working out.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
I think it means it's going to get uncomfortable between
him and the seventy six ers. Like, he's made it
known I want to get traded. They don't necessarily want
to trade him. Let's they get a good package for him.
He's like, all right, well, it's time to get uncomfortable
because I want to go. This isn't gonna be comfortable.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Doesn't mean I'm gonna make it uncomfortable for everyone else too.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Yeah, he's just started. He took you off of social media.
He's publicly saying he doesn't want to be there. That
is the uncomfort.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Wonder if Hardene'll start giving interviews that are not I mean,
you can take this a lot of ways. You get
very uncomfortable very quickly.
Speaker 7 (25:25):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
I just wonder. I did see a report about the Sixers.
They might just say we're not trading you show up. Yeah,
And and he's gonna it's gonna be real for those
cooking games, ye, where he might end up on the
losing end here. I don't listen, Harden don't have a
lot of leverage. It's not like there's a robust market
for James Harden at the track.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Yeah, comfortable.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
By the way, did you see the brand of burgers
that he was eating or.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Is it just some generic one.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
I was not Familiarny's box, but the colors were yellow.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
That's the thing.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
No, No, No, Wendy's is like red.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Okay, right, I think so. By the way, there you go.
Here's the drill Burgers.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
I don't know what that means.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
It's it's probably probably a Houston big I have no idea.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
I'll have to look it up on the TikTok account.
Speaker 7 (26:12):
Go deep, go deep, like a deep dive down.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
The looks like a burgers sweat.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Ohj mack, he's having a time. He's at a club
eating burgers.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Indeed.
Speaker 7 (26:22):
Yeah, I mean that's what That's what I would want
to do if I was at a club. All right.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Moving on to Otani news, because we were officially on
show Heyo Tani watch in the Angel's last home game
before the tread date deadline. Shoho Tani hit his MLB
leading thirty six home run last night. Otani's future is
up in the air as the August first deadline approaches,
and the Angels are still in a playoff hunt and
could choose to keep them in an effort to make
(26:45):
a push for the postseason. Now, the Big question is
was this kind of Otani's farewell tour at the Big A.
Right now, we are about a week away from the
trade deadline. It's Tuesday next week now. Our Fox Sports
MLB staff writers all came together and put together twelve
mock trades possible for Otani in different teams.
Speaker 7 (27:06):
Y Yeah, really great.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
I think the Yankees one stood out the most as
the possible best one.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
But the Angels are.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
Playing well right now, so I think this week they
play Detroit and they play the Blue Jays, and pending
how they do this week leading up to Tuesday, the
trade deadline will determine what Ardi Moreno and the Angels
choose to do with Shoeo Tani. And my gut feeling
is unless they get an offer that they cannot refuse,
(27:37):
they're gonna keep Otani. They're gonna try to stay in
the hunt until Mike Trout gets back. Right now, they're
just four games out of a wildcard spot with just
two teams ahead of them, and.
Speaker 7 (27:47):
I think they're gonna go for it. But just to
kind of put it into perspective.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Everyone, Mike Jrone has been with the Angels for over
a decade. He has only played in three playoff games,
he has lost all three. Shoe Heyo Tani has yet
to play in a playoff game. His biggest thing is
he wants to win. So you got to think of
long term. Is he gonna stay at the end of
the season once he's a free agent? If you keep them,
probably not, because history just over the last decade has
kind of proven itself as to what.
Speaker 7 (28:11):
Will happen.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
And do you get something for him or if you
have the best player in baseball, do you try to
keep them and.
Speaker 7 (28:18):
Make a run if you have a shot.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
So one thing that jumps out Alex at that video
that they're showing a lot of empty seats in Anaheim
this weekend. Now, I know it's hot as hades here,
but that's a lot of empty seats with Otani playing.
Speaker 3 (28:31):
What's that all about.
Speaker 2 (28:32):
I gotta be honest, I haven't been down there since
I stopped working for the broadcast.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
So we are the one show in America where there's
like five angels fans that are in the in the
room when we're putting things together, And I'm like, if
there are only four games out, why can't they already
morenos swing for the fences let's make some trades. Let's
bring in some guys that are can help.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
They depleted the farm system, well, that already done that.
They don't have a lot to give up.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Apparently there's really not one or two guys out there
that could swing things for the Angels. You can't trade
for a couple guys.
Speaker 7 (29:03):
They already did that.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
They literally traded away their farm system over the last
ten years and have not rebuilt it and it has
not gotten back to that place. Plus, do you want
to give away everything you have? And then o'tani? Not
the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
What if it's Otani. We're doing everything we can. We're
giving away our farm.
Speaker 7 (29:21):
Sits doesn't matter. He said, he wants to win.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Well, we're trying to win, does it.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
He's been there, They've tried and they haven't even gotten
to the playoffs. As Mike Trout, one of the best
players in baseball, never won a playoff game.
Speaker 7 (29:35):
With the Angels. It's tough. So we got what a
week left next Tuesday?
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Yeah, eight days already Moreno, you're on the clock, buddy,
Alex with the news.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Well that's the.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
News, and thanks for stopping by the herd Line news.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
All right, coming up next, the biggest similarity between Tom
Brady and Patrick Mahomes and oh, by the way, at
the top of the next hour, I steal one of
Colin's favorite segment where Jmack was right, Where Jmack was wrong,
A lot of wrong there. That's next here on the Herd.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
So I spent a chunk of the weekend attending a
chess tournament. My son a twelve year old, playing his
first serious chess tournament. And there are like super strict
rules of these chess tournaments. I didn't know, Like, there's
this massive ballroom, all these games happening.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
You can't be on your phone.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
So I go there with my phone some reading material,
and obviously I knew I was hosting the Herd. I had,
you know, notes to start doing stuff, and I start
looking stuff up on my phone and they're like, hey, hey,
can't be on your phone in years, Like all right,
So I had to put the phone away and I
had to kind of freelance it, you know, and start
doing research. So I start drilling down on one topic
individual and I got into this weird place where I'm
(31:53):
looking at the New England Patriots and how they built
their dynasty, and there were really only two.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Constant right, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
You could say Gronk was a significant part of that,
and we'll get to him shortly. But the way they
built it was kind of fascinating. They would constantly evolve.
One year, who's the big running back, Garrett Blunt is
rushing for eighteen touchdowns, and then another year they have
I think it was it Corey Dillon had a monster
running back season, and then they were like, no, no, no,
(32:24):
we're gonna pivot to running backsuit and catch passes. And
here's Shane Vereen out of the backfield, and then it's
James White. Constantly evolving, and then you look at the
wide receivers and like Dion branch wins I think a
Super Bowl MVP, and he got Wes Welker and then okay,
he's done. Now let's put in Danny Amadola and here
comes Julian Edelman and it's constantly evolving, and oh, now
(32:45):
we're gonna go to two tight end sets. We're gonna
go Gronk and Aaron Hernandez. And then now we're gonna go, oh,
we're gonna bring in Randy Moss. And they're constantly changing.
But there were only two constants, Andy Reid and Tom Brady.
Oh sorry, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. It brings me
to Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and what's happening in
Kansas City. And I don't know if you guys are
(33:06):
big fantasy football players or gamblers. I do both, so
I've got to be up to speed on all these injuries.
And a guy that everybody in Casey likes is Cadarius Tony.
The kid had a lot of juice at Florida. Major
bounce on the outside, you get in the ball in space,
heal embarrassed people. He is a super talented player, so
he injures his knee. Now, injuries have been a bugaboo
(33:27):
for him since he got to the league. Giants took
him in the first round. Kadarius Tony was supposed to
be special, kept getting hurt. When he did play in
limited fashion, he pops on the screen. He had a
nice couple of.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Moments in the Super Bowl. But Kadaria's turning.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Tony hurt his knee this week, and I'm like, oh, geez,
what are the Chiefs gonna do with wide receiver? And
you start looking at the wide receiver room and I
had to look. I'm like, WHOA sky Moore, Mvs? Who
they got for the Packers? Rashi Rice. I start, you know,
thinking about, wait, was she Rice? Oh?
Speaker 3 (33:57):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (33:58):
The scouts love that guy. And you look at that
wide receiver room and you're like, wait a minute, the
Chiefs are going back to the Super Bowl with sky
Moore and mvs and Rashi ro what's happening here? And
I start then looking historically at the Chief's wide receivers
and it's like, oh, okay, last year Juju Smith Schuster
had seventy eight receptions.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
He's gone.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
Jared McKinnon out of the backfield had nine touchdowns. Whoa
they really mixed it up. Year before that Byron Pringle
remember him? I don't either, five touchdowns. Year before that,
Tyreek Hill popped for a few years, obviously, Mikole Hartman
four touchdowns, DeMarcus Robinson. Are you sensing a theme, ladies
and gentlemen. Chris Conley in twenty eighteen had five touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Chris Conley, I.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Don't remember going anywhere else doing anything. And then you
look at twenty nineteen Sammy Watkins, remember him. The Kansas
City Chiefs are doing exactly what the Patriots did. We
got our constance, the head coach and the quarterback. After that,
everyone else is just filler and we're rotating. Yes, Travis
Kelce has been a constant, kind of like Rob Gronkowski
(35:04):
was a constant for Brady. But what's super interesting to
me is wide receiver injury to Cadarius Tony. That's not
really a big deal, Like it stinks for Tony obviously,
and it stinks to lose a player, but the way
the Kansas City Chief system is set up, they're gonna
be fine. And the longer they can do this, whether
(35:25):
it's Byron Pringle, DeMarcus Robinson, Chris Connelly, plug and play,
and this system, to me is super dangerous for the
league because.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
They have kind of sort of hacked the NFL.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
I had thought, I think I hosted the show earlier
this spring, and I thought, and it's not like a
newfound concept, but to hack the NFL, you need your
quarterback on a rookie deal and then you spend, spend,
spend instantly.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Chicago Bears are doing it this year.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
We've seen other teams around the league rookie deal to
a toungo by Low in Miami. Let's load up, Let's
go get Jalen Ramsay, Let's go get ik Kill. Spend, spend, spend.
When the quarterbacks on the rookie deal, then after that
you kind of got to hope that the quarterback can
stay healthy and everyone else kind of gets underpaid. But
Kansas City is doing the New England model, and it's
(36:12):
a little scary because and I had to look this up.
In nineteen years the Patriots won twelve or more games
thirteen times. That is staggering success. The NFL is built
for parody. They want everybody kind of good. Everybody had
to start a training camp here in the next week.
Your team's got to shot at the playoffs. Super Bowl bubbles.
(36:34):
By the way, the staff here doesn't love a Super
Bowl bubble, So we're gonna do AFC tiers coming up shortly.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
But you look at the tiers and it's like, wow, there's.
Speaker 1 (36:44):
A couple heavyweights, then you've got like a robust middle class,
and then a couple of bottom feeders. Legitimately, at least
twenty four teams in this league go into this season
thinking we've got a shot at the playoffs, and you
could look at the wind totals and see the league
is built for parody. The Patriots solve that. And it's
a little bit interesting that the Kansas City Chiefs are
(37:06):
on that track where they're gonna say, hey, Jared McKinnon,
we got them nine touchdowns this year.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
It's tough for fantasy.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
As I mentioned earlier, like I played fantasy, probably gonna
do four leagues. I did win one last year in
a couple of bucks, which was nice. It was nice,
But you've got to follow all this stuff very intently,
and then the closer you look like nobody else in
the league is built like this. I know the Cincinnati
Bengals are good. Coach is not on the Reed Belichick level. Sorry,
(37:33):
Zach Taylor, Joe Burrow very very good, but they're paying
Jamar Chase a lot. T Higgins is gonna get paid
like you can't really in this model keep multiple stars.
Chiefs had to lose Tyreek Hill and they lost nothing
on the field. When Tyreek Hill goes to the Miami Dolphins,
(37:54):
and if Miami, you know, can thrive with Hill for
another year, great, But then they got to pay two
and we'll see what happened there. But the other thing
that Kansas City has done extremely well. Is nail the
draft the last few years. I started looking at the
Kansas City Chiefs defense. Folks, It's long been a problem.
It just hasn't been great. It's Chris Jones, who, by
(38:15):
the way, didn't show up the camp. Andy Reid was surprised.
It'll be fine. But the Kansas City chief secondary promising
defensive line they've drafted there, we'll see linebacker's good. Listen,
I know you don't like dynasties. I've been hyping the
Golden State Warriors, greatest dynasty ever.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
I love the super teams in the NBA. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
If football fans will love this dynasty for the Chiefs
that's coming. Like nothing is gonna stop this train in
short of Andy Reid retiring or Patrick Mahomes deciding, you know,
I'm retiring early, or is some you know, injury. But
this Kansas City team right now is built because they
have the new model get your superstar coach. And remember
Reid was not a superstar before.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
He came to KC.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Philadelphia got rid of him. He was on the market
for like seven minutes. But nevertheless, reading Mahomes, Belichick, Brady,
I tried to look around in the league to find
the next duo of that, and it's like Stafford's up
there in age doesn't really match mcvay's timeline, and you
start looking around and there really aren't a.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
Lot of them.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
Kansas City is now set up to really do some damage.
I know everybody loves the Chargers, Colin's favorite team. Every
year Chargers. Chargers like won't even if their head coach
is gonna be here next year. And you start looking around,
You're like, damn reading Mahomes really are going to dominate.
And then you start to wonder can this be duplicated?
And then the answer is kind of sort of like
(39:39):
not really. There are not a lot of Belichicks out there.
But I will point out Belichick too. He had a
nice little run in Cleveland, short lived before he had
to resurface in New England. So it's not like he
was automatic superstar right out of the gate. Bill Belichick
like he was always a good coach, but now he's
the greatest of all time. And you start to wonder, like, man,
they're really isn't this happening anywhere? Kyle Shanahan's got his
(40:02):
own little thing going on. In San Francisco where he
thinks maybe he can rotate the quarterback every few years.
We'll see how that works out. Garoppolo went extremely well.
They got to a Super Bowl, another AFC title game, sorry,
NFC title game.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
That when they lost, of course.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
But I just I don't think this is really going
to be able to be done by many other teams
because you really don't have a Patrick Mahomes caliber quarterback
anywhere else.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
Now.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Brady of course did take less money over the long
haul in New England, and he was able to do
that because his wife was a supermodel who I think
the net worth was like in the neighborhood of five
hundred million dollars, so he could take less, so everybody
else got paid. The one big difference between this Chiefs
budding dynasty and what the Patriots built is Belichick was
(40:50):
a defensive guy, and I really do wonder if he's
going to be able to pivot now at this late
stage in his career the way he has pivoted for
the last two decades, going from whether it's superstar receiver,
two tight ends, heavy on the running backs, heavy on
the slot receivers. He's constantly evolved. I don't know at
this stage if Belichick has anything left.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
To evolve into.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
I know we've put them on the hot seat Boston
Media and this show. I just ye kind of sort
of wonder is this the swan song for Belichick? And
now Andy Reid and Mahomes take over and kind of
wreck the league. Alex, you're nodding your head. I feel
like you kind of agree with me here.
Speaker 7 (41:28):
It's that time.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
We've seen it.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Just what Bill has not been able to do once
Tom Brady left. Like Tom Brady left, got a super Bowl.
We know who's the goat.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
They were a duo.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
They did their best work when they were together, and
they're not together anymore. And it is Patrick Mahome and
Andy Reid's time.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
I would agree, I mean, unfortunately, is it's about that time?
Speaker 3 (41:51):
Maybe?
Speaker 7 (41:52):
Yeah, that time. It doesn't matter. It's they're the perfect combo.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
They compliment each other so perfectly, and you kind of
got to behind the scenes look at that on the
Netflix show Quarterback.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
We've never seen a Rogers Mahomes postseason showdown. Maybe that's
coming up in the playoffs, all right, coming up next
to the herd where Jason was right where Jason was wrong.
NFL insider Tom Pellasaro gives us the latest on Saquon
