Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Is Thursday, and a great day. We are live and
it is The Herd.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Wherever here in August you are listening or watching, there's
a lot of choices. Thanks for making us part of
your day. Hey, we get Greg Cosell. We might as
well start it now. Greg Cosell stop by in one
hour from today. We put them off for about twenty
twenty two straight weeks during the football season, early, middle,
and late, and Greg co sal will join us in

(00:57):
a one hour. It's one of my favorite fifty minute
segments every football season.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
We do it on Thursdays. Jamac you used to be.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
In a business kind of a blogg a sphere and
most of the ninety nine percent of those things did
not do well. And I remember when I spotted your site.
I had told friends, I said, I like the McIntyre
site because you can tell he's like he can break stories.
He's like serious, he's not doing silly stuff. Like there's

(01:27):
like serious stories here. It's sourced, And I want to
start my show talking about that because it was one
of the things I noticed before we had even met
a blog. A sphere can be just nonsense and whimsical,
and yours wasn't. You were breaking stories. And that's kind
of a theme today for quarterback. So I saw this

(01:48):
headline from Archie Mann and he says arch will not
turn pro next season. He'll be at Texas for the
next two years. Yeah, that's what you have to say.
If he beats Ohio State in Columbus, wins the Heisman
or doesn't and gets into the national championship game, it

(02:11):
would be really bad business to stay in college. And
I know almost every manning pretty well. They're good at business,
and they say the right thing when they have to
college sports for truly gifted athletes, like a Cooper Flag.
It's like that first really cool apartment you live in

(02:33):
when you make a little money and you're like, I'm
never leaving this place, and then eventually you get a
real job with a VP and the title and you
don't want to share walls or the pool, and you
forget about it really quickly. Arch Manning made six point
five million last year at Texas nil. Reportedly, cam Ward
made forty eight point seven guaranteed number one pick ars.

(02:58):
Can I can I interest you?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
You went a forty two million dollar loan? Hook?

Speaker 1 (03:02):
What?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (03:04):
This is the classic Mannings saying the right thing and
a lot of times in society. I mean, I think
the term is true, but I get tired of it. Woke, Well,
you're just not being honest. You know, when you're really
important sometimes JD. Vance should not talk about ever being
a president. Keep it to yourself, Lebron Mannings, Mahomes, Brady,

(03:30):
I've seen Mahomes step to the microphone and just say
the right thing, not necessarily the most honest, authentic thing.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
That's what happens.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
And the Manning family is American Football Royalty. So this
is exactly what you say. We Cooper Flag said it. Oh,
Duke and Denny talked to Nike and then you're the
number one picked and here's fifty six large. I love
Duke so much. I'll go visit when they play Carol
and if I have time. Arch Manning. If he's as

(04:03):
good as I think he is, he's got to go pro.
I know Cooper, I know Eli, I know Peyton, I
know Archie, and I don't know Arch. But Sark talking
about Arch sounds a lot like Cooper and Eli and
Peyton Manning.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
His work ethic is incredible. Whether it's you know, studying tape,
studying film, studying the playbook, working at his craft, you know,
in the weight room like that, that is, whether it's
innate in him or it was you know, handed down
from his uncles, whatever, whatever it was, his work ethic
is really pretty incredible. And that lends itself to the

(04:48):
teammate that he is too.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
And that's an interesting way to describe him. Jumping into
my next segment, now, I will tell you ninety percent
of you will disagree with this take. And I've been
doing this for twenty five years. I believe in it
strongly and always have. So did you notice when Sark
talked about Arch and oh, by the way, Eli Manning

(05:13):
could be you know, funny on Saturday Night Live, But
if you described Peyton Manning you would say intense. Bill
Pollion once said he was a teeth clencher. If you're
describing Tiger Woods, you'd be like obsessed, intimidating, Michael Jordan, Kobe,

(05:34):
Bryant Brady. It's not a coincidence that the greatest athletes
of my life are borderline crazy, obsessed, serious people. And
I am hoping when Shadur Sanders plays tomorrow night, I
can't wait to watch.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
I'm rooting for him.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
I mean, I don't like the speeding tickets, but they
lead me to my topic today. It is totally unfair
that at twenty three years old, as an NFL quarterback,
you are held to a totally different standard, not only
from every twenty three year old you know, but from
every twenty three year old professional athlete. You have to

(06:19):
be twenty three going on forty three, not even thirty three,
cause some of you are still doing shooters at the
you know, Captain Van Dangoes on a Friday night, right, like,
I know where you're out. You're doing stuff that's really
not appropriate. You hope your boss doesn't walk in right
right at thirty three, at forty three, hopeful that you

(06:39):
have kids. You're a grown up, you're a vice president.
You're not doing it quarterback in the NFL. It's almost unfair.
Jalen Hurts is twenty seven, he acts forty seven. I've
never seen a quarterback that good at the podium ever,
he is the best quarterback I've ever seen at the podium.

(07:00):
He surpasses the second best I've ever seen. Dak Prescott.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
No jokes.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
They're like accountants should bring a briefcase. And this is
something that's always bothered me about shaduer and Miles Garrett
was asked to describe his personality here it is.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I mean, it's funny, He's optimistic, lighthearted.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Who's funny. Jamis Winston was funny. Drew lock was lighthearted.
Cam Newton is the best college football player I have
ever seen. He was the size of a defensive end,
but he was playful. Drew Locke remember that piece of video.
That's all I needed to see. I know all your

(07:51):
frat bros. They loved it. I get it. The cigarette
bros absolutely love that. I get it.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
It's not what I want.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Dak Prescott his rookie year. It may have been preseason
or it was early in the season, did something and
you guys made fun of it, But there was a
piece of garbage on the field behind the cowboy bench.
He's in the middle of a game and he walked
by it and turned around, grabbed it and put it
in the garbage. And I'm like, oh, that's grown up.
He understands. It's like when you go to a funeral,

(08:25):
don't smile and don't laugh. You have to be on
Dak Prescott understands. I'm the cowboy quarterback. I am always on.
Years ago, in the Patriots building, they did a little test.
This is true story. They would randomly put stuff on
the floor to see if people picked it up when
they interviewed them. To this day, when I walked down

(08:46):
the halls of Fox, just in case my bosses are watching,
I always stop and pick up a piece of garbage.
It matters, and it's unfair. I don't want my quarterbacks
to be, as Miles Garrett said, fun lighthearted. I'm not
interested in lighthearted at all. Jamis Winston the best thing
he's ever done. Worked for Fox.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
It was funny. He also threw thirty picks a year.
It's not fair.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
But the Harbaughs, Nick Saban Sean Payton are almost offensively intense.
I mean there are times Nick Saban's so intense it's intimidating,
and yet Nick Saban is five foot six. Did you
know that he plays really big? Sean Payton, I'm much
taller than he is. He feels bigger than I do.

(09:35):
I don't want my quarterbacks to be fun, lighthearted in
the draft room, but legendary. It was also fun in
that car doing one to four in a forty five.
I'm sorry, but it matters. I like the traits of
Shador Sanders. I like his size. I think he's more
mobile than people say. I think he throws a beautiful

(09:56):
football off platform er on it. I think he's a
much better propriate inspect and Dylan Gabriel. Obviously many of
you disagree. But one of the things that's always bothered me,
he's kind of silly. I don't want silly. I'm not
interested in it silly. There's so many things pedigree, size, accuracy,
I like about it, but it's just one of those things.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
It is just there was them. I'll give you another example.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
I don't love Brock Purdy, but there was a moment
with Brock Purdy. He was at a concert about a
year ago with George Kittle. George Kittle is shot gun
and beers and oh, by the way, brock Purty, just
like a funeral, don't laugh, You're always on. Brock Purdy
carried the beers in. He wouldn't bite. He wouldn't bite.

(10:46):
He didn't want that meme nothing. Let the crazy tied
end do it. I'm not biting.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
He is going, yeah, George, you keep doing it. He
wouldn't do it. He didn't want that anywhere.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Because if you do that and people see it, and
you go on a four game losing streak, the GM
sees it. And by the way, I will get three
to four texts today from GMS and they'll be like,
you're absolutely right. And every time I do that stuff
I get texts. Is that most twenty three year olds
are listening saying that's ridiculous. It is in ninety eight

(11:21):
percent of the work environments in the country. But one
of the things that impressed me about Dak and Jalen Hurts.
It's not how they throw from the pocket. I've said
this about Tua. Tua's grown up Tyreek Hill isn't Hurts
is unbelievable. When people say Lamar Jackson he gets tight
in the playoffs, Yeah, damn righty does because he cares

(11:42):
so much. Lamar Jackson gets furious at Lamar Jackson. It's
one of my favorite traits. And I do think he
gets tight in the playoffs, and I do think Peyton
Manning did for years. If the biggest fault is the
dude is really intense, sign me up for that. Sign
me up for Lamar Jackson and early Peyton Manning. But

(12:07):
there's that Drew Locke video Keeping a Real Man. I
got the vibes and y'all loved it, and I couldn't
stand it. And it was only ten seconds, and I'm like, dude, do.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
That at home.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
You're on You're smiling at a funeral, You're trying to
be the face of a franchise. I don't like it.
I wouldn't like my GM doing it. I wouldn't like
my head coach doing it. Remember that Chadur Flaco thing.
There was a little piece of video with Shadur and
Flacco here in camp. And it's not the end of
the world. Nobody's saying it is. As I always say,
everything's something, nothing's everything. But remember that little piece of video.

(12:42):
Do we have the sound up on that? When Flacco
and Shaduur and Shadeur's asking him about dancing.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Do we have that.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
You ever that that's that? Definitely not.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
I don't know if I've ever heard a public dance
movie in my life.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Joe flat Goes been too a super Bowl and won
a Super Bowl, and if I recall he was the
MVP of the Super Bowl, it matters at least to me.
All Right, the hate mail will be flying in and
keep it coming because it is a thing. It really
is a thing, and it just is one of those things.

(13:22):
I think about it all the time. And there are
different times in life. By the way, I've joked about
this for years. Whenever I'm hiring a young person like
twenty or thirty, I don't want somebody that loves golf.
Now by the time you get gray hair and you're old,
I don't care old guys. I'm really into golf the
last three years the gray or my hair gets.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
But I'm out of that space now.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
But when you're twenty and thirty and you're not making
much and I need you to work fifty five to
sixty hours a week, I'm not working that much anymore.
I got a bigger staff in it. But when I
used to be in this business looking for young people.
I didn't mind what your hobbies were. I didn't want golfers.
I didn't want golfer because golf as an addictive quality.
I'm going through that now over the last three years.
Once the number six, that's different than two to three

(14:07):
on the name on the number. And so I will
say this, The brock Pretty thing really struck me. I
was like, you can say what you and I've never
been a huge brock Pretty guy. But one of the
things Sam Darnold said about him, like one of the
reasons that Kyle Shanahan was so impressed with him.

Speaker 3 (14:26):
Is his maturity.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
They were like, he's just not your typical twenty four
year old and maybe that's unfair, but it's really impressive.
Part of what NFL teams do. They have these conversations.
Can we hand the keys of our franchise to this
young guy? That is a conversation networks have that I've
worked at. Can we give this person their own show,

(14:50):
it's his show, it's his staff. We can't babysit him.
We're not there every day. Can you give the keys
to the franchise and you watch Brock party and like
he knew come on George a couple more. He wouldn't bite,
He would not bite j RK. When you get your
show someday, that Marquis, You're gonna have to settle down

(15:12):
because you are a wild child on the beach of
the Manhattan Beach.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
From what I hear, so basically this week you are
against backwards visors and you are against shotgutting beers on
stage at a concert. Okay, you're basically captain on fun.
You know you've heard of the fun uncle, the funkal.
You're like the opposite of that.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
You are unfun Colin, Oh my.

Speaker 6 (15:33):
Gosh, golf really no, So what about basketball?

Speaker 3 (15:37):
You're good with me and the men's leagues. I mean,
got a big playoff game.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
You get your cardio in. Get your cardio in. Hi, everybody,
I understand that I always had a thing with golf.
When your hair gets Greg, go for it before that.
I don't want to hear your golf that they did
plan on seven courses.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
That's just me.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Everybody's got a different vine. Greg co Sell's coming up
in forty five minutes. You know I love Greg go
Sell A very serious man, by the way, very serious.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Welcome back.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
You are now entering the Noel bull Zone sponsored by
Incredible Great Raids, None of the Ball. So I was
talking about this at the very end of the show
yesterday about Brian Chottenneimer. I don't think the Dallas Cowboys
is the easiest job. I do not think it's the
toughest job. So there were seven new coaches, and by
and large, you take over a team that's either rudderless,

(17:09):
it's just it's not worth very Rarely do you get
a Matt Lafleur, where you get Aaron Rodgers in his prime.
That's the best job opening in probably twenty years, is
that the Green Bay Packers with Aaron Rodgers in his prime.
Aaron and Mike McCarthy had a falling out, but that's
a great job. Stability everywhere, no chaos. Aaron was great,

(17:30):
roster was good. But there were seven job openings this year,
one of them New England is the easiest lift. You're
not replacing Belichick. You have one of the smarter, more
powerful owners. You have great game day revenue. They got
plenty of money.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
You know.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Again, Drake May, I think is gonna work, and even
worked last year without any help. And you got the
Dolphins and the Jets both kind of dysfunctional in your division.
That's the easiest job now. I do think there are
some that are like I think the Raiders is a
big lift. I got Hardbaugh, Herbert bo Nicks, Peyton, Andy Reid,

(18:06):
Mahomes and the great Kansas City Chiefs in division. You
could get it right in that division for several years
and finished fourth. I think the Raiders is a tough lift.
I think the Bears historically very weak ownership, old weak ownership,
too many kids involved, a lot of pressure, loud market,
tough media quarterback Ben Johnson. You don't know if Caleb

(18:29):
can play. I mean, we don't know yet. I think
he's talented, but we don't know. I also think the
Jets ownership men GM who knows it's another guy, it's
a turnstile. I think the Jets is a hard lift.
The culture there is just not great. A lot of
impulsive moves and there's a lot of too many, too
many cooks in the kitchen. But the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer,

(18:53):
it's not an easy lift. You have a medaling owner
and Mike has got a hold out and the Micah
holdout thing, it's substantial. He's arguably, I don't think he's
as gifted as CD Land, but he's really really good.
And here is Brian schottenheimershot he talking about the Micah
Parsons issue.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
We're still planning on moving Mike around and putting him
in all the spots that we see him and using
our fronts the way we want to see it. And no,
we just you know, we go about our business every day.
We live in the moment. We Folcus in the moment.
And again, like I said, I talked to you guys
the other day, I'm not going to get a lot
into it, but you know, uh, I expect Michael.

Speaker 3 (19:28):
To be here.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
But I think one of the reasons this is an
easier job than some of the other jobs is Dak Prescott.
Dak is the Honda Civic of this league. You never
have to worry about getting to work. It will not
break down, right Like, his floor is very high. I
think you'd be surprised how many games Dak has won

(19:51):
when he's healthy. I think it's second. If I may,
I may be wrong since he got drafted. I think
it's second to the Eagles in the NFC. He has
an incredibly high floor. You don't have to worry about silliness.
He's an excellent leader high iq EQ. This is really
the value of Dak Prescott. This has always been the
value to me. I don't think he's great from the pocket.

(20:12):
But Dallas is a loud market with an aggressive media.
Talk radio remains very big in Dallas. Newspaper columnists have
influence of the Dallas Morning News. It's still one of
the only markets where sports guys get more than forty
five seconds.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
It matters.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
It's a loud, aggressive sports market, and Dak fundamentally is
a complete grown up. And so that's the one thing
Jerry's gonna meddle. Jerry lost his fastball. Micah Trayvon Diggs
are upset. George Pickens watch out. But this has always
been Dak's value. Can you imagine if you had a

(20:50):
less serious quarterback than Dak Presscott, what a mess this
would be. I've always said this, Dak's talent, I think
is very middle of the pack. The iq EQ stuff
top three or four in the league. Until Jalen Hurts arrived,
I thought he was the best guy I'd ever seen
at the podium.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
Jay Mackle the news, Turn on the news.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
This is the herd Line News.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
All right, let's dive right into it. Josh Allen, best
quarterback in the league, MVP of the League.

Speaker 6 (21:21):
Colin he S broke to Fox Sports and said that
the MVP trophy is sitting in a box in his
house somewhere, and added he'd trade ten MVP awards for
a Super Bowl ring. Obviously some hyperbole from Josh, but
I kind of contrast what a former quarterback named Cam
Newton had said a little while ago that he would

(21:43):
not trade his MVP for a Super Bowl ring. I
like this attitude from Allen as I'm sure you as well.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Yeah, I mean, I think that.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
I can judge a person a lot by what matters
to them. You know, if trophies and awards and validation
and acceptance mean a lot to you, you're not really
a serious person. It's okay for you, you know, I'm
not saying it you can't enjoy it. But if winning
isn't first, second, and third, then you're in the wrong

(22:13):
prof That's not really what I'm looking for. The fact
that it's in a box. I have so much respect
for that, Like you appreciate awards. I'm not saying you
shouldn't appreciate him. I anytime, I want to totally appreciate it.
But it can't be the driving force. It can't be
that important. Winning is the difference, and I'd love the
fact that the fact that it's in a box that

(22:35):
brings a smile to my face.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Totally agree.

Speaker 6 (22:37):
Let's move to the Philadelphia Eagles. Colum their defense last
year just a formidable group, just confounded Patrick Mahomes in
the Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
Well, guess what.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
Accord to Saquon Barkley, the defense is better this year
and that's a large part thanks to rookie linebacker Jihad
Campbell out of Alabama.

Speaker 3 (22:56):
Saiquan said, I think he's going to be.

Speaker 6 (22:57):
A problem, a real big problem for a lot of
guys in this league who have to block him. He's
kind of built like wait for it, Micah Parsons. He's
comparing a rookie saying he's kind of built like Mike Nousins.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
You know, I love this draft pick because he's an
inside linebacker and he was the best inside linebacker in
college football and classic Philadelphia Eagles. You can't draft Jalen Carter.
You can't draft an inside linebacker, and Philadelphia drafted both.
And I mean, this is why Philadelphia is so great.
You ever noticed this? Kansas City does this too at

(23:29):
the end of the first round where they got the
left tackle from Ohio State that had been injured and
many people are saying he looks great in camp is
when you have Super Bowls, you are not beholden to
public opinion that Howie Roseman doesn't care. I had I
think I said this on the air before the draft.
I had somebody tell me that is the best from

(23:50):
like the eight pick on that's the best athlete in
the draft, or like this kid is insane. But a
lot of people were intimidated. They had They had a
very weak inner score board. They had a bigger you know,
they worry about what people think about them and Howie
Roseman does not, and they went and got this kid.
So it doesn't shock me at all. Every scout I
had in this league that I talked to, you thought

(24:10):
this kid was in a day one, immediate starter, year two,
buying for Pro Bowls.

Speaker 6 (24:16):
Your point about having Super Bowls and being able to
do this is good. Do you remember twenty twenty three
the Detroit Lions had two first round picks.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
They drafted a running back at Gal Gibbs.

Speaker 6 (24:28):
That pick was pillary, unbelievable, Jack Campbell like an inside
linebacker at eighteen, and.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
The lines were crushed. Everybody crushed him. Now it has
worked out, but at the time they took a lot
of heat. Eagles took no heat for this pick. No,
no good point.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
I mean we've said this before, is that when they
made those moves, I think you and I said, is
that we get I'm not saying there aren't positions that like.
I think I can usually get safeties in the second, third,
fourth round. Seattle this year got a great safety in
the second round. He's an amazing player from South Carolina.
I think historically you can get safeties in a lot

(25:04):
of places and running backs. But folks, if you have
a player that you like, Jamair Gibbs is an insane
talent in the SEC.

Speaker 3 (25:14):
The first guy could never bring him down. Just pick him.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Don't get caught up in possession. Remember when Quentin Nelson
went guard to the Colts, It's like, oh, interior offensive lineman.
He's been first or second best guard for the last
seven years in the league.

Speaker 6 (25:27):
Again, winning covers it all up. Baltimore, Ravens, Colin they
got Super Bowls. Hardbo, everybody loves him. They took Kyle Hamilton, Yeah,
fourteenth overall safety, what do you And then this year
they took Malachi Starks and they're like, safety two safety,
what are.

Speaker 3 (25:40):
You doing in what?

Speaker 1 (25:42):
Same year they took a center and a safety in
round one and everybody's like, whoa, they're both Pro bowlers.
Just go get the best players.

Speaker 3 (25:51):
Get the best players.

Speaker 6 (25:51):
The smart teams do that, right, final story, Colin is
your guy. Sean McVeigh remember a few years ago he
kind of in the preseason when he said, I'm sitting
all my starters. Well, the trend is turning completely around.
We've gotten word that Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow, cam Ward
all will play in.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
Preseason Week one.

Speaker 6 (26:12):
That was not happening thanks to McVeigh a few years ago.
Now justin Fields of my Jets said he wants to play.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
We'll see. The Colts are.

Speaker 6 (26:20):
Going to have Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
A lot of starters playing.

Speaker 6 (26:25):
In the preseason, specifically quarterbacks. I don't think you like
this trend, but that's just a guess.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
I Joe Burrow always worries me about previous injuries.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
But I don't know. I just I think I'm if
college football.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
If Texas and Ohio State can play a game with
no preseason, with limitations on practice hours, college kids who
are nineteen twenty twenty one pro football guys need a preseason.
Why these are adults limitations on practice time? Most of
these guys have played multiple NFL seasons. I'm not a

(27:06):
fan of preseason, and I also think it looks bad
for the league.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
There's nobody at the.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Games there, it's just backups. I've said before, if I
ran the league, I would get it to one game
and I would play. I would just play because I
think what I've heard from coaches and execs, they like
the inner squad practice of the here day the Rams
and Cowboys played, and you're still doing vanilla stuff, but
you can kind of manipulate it, unlike a game where
you have to play. There's a clock, there's officials. I'm

(27:32):
not a preseason fan. I just I watch some of it,
but I don't I would not play a lot of start.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
You're looking for a why, I think is what I
heard there.

Speaker 6 (27:42):
So listen closely to the quarterbacks who are playing preseason
week one.

Speaker 3 (27:45):
There is a common thread.

Speaker 6 (27:47):
Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow, cam Ward all play for teams
that have not been in the playoffs. Okay, they need
Joe Burrow needs a good start, like he's pissed about
last year. And Zach Taylor Kyler Murray is a pivotal
year for him. Okay, second year with Gannet. You don't
want to Ganne to get fired. And Kim Wore rookie

(28:08):
coming out of the gate. Then you got Justin Fields.
Colin this is like his last chance to be a
starter in the league. Justin Fields, I would play in
the preseason.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
I would.

Speaker 6 (28:15):
I mean, I don't care if he doesn't want to.
You better, this is your last shot and then you
know the Colts Anthony Richardson, this is a big prove
it year. I do think like a Mahomes No.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
I think the guys I would play for sure, Justin Fields,
JJ McCarthy, Absolutely, I'm gonna play I'm not I'm not
playing Dak Prescott in the preseason. I'm gonna play Milton.
I'm not playing Dakasnaw Jalen Hurts. I don't want Jalen
anywhere near the I don't want Lamar Herbert, C J.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
Stroud.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
I would play JJ McCarthy. I would play Caleb Williams
some snaps. I wouldn't even play Jayden Daniels. I wouldn't
play Dave Jayden Daniels. I would play Drake May a
couple of series Max. Yeah, I mean there's about four
guys I would absolutely. I'm not sure i'd play Joe Burrell.
To be honest with.

Speaker 3 (28:59):
You, I don't know if I would.

Speaker 6 (29:01):
I mean, I'm just think the Kyler Murray thing is interesting.
You know, I'm kind of bullish on Arizona this year.
He don't want to start like.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
One in four. Okay, this is a huge year for
Kyler Murray. Come, it's a big one. We'll see Jamack
of the news.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
herd Line News.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
Greg co Sell at the top of our number two.
I got a couple of good rants here. I don't
even I don't even think I want to give him away.
I think they're just it's just too much to throw away,
very very good segments. But I didn't see this the
commanders and Terry McLaurin. No I have said, uh I

(29:42):
pay Terry. Terry signed a contract a couple of years ago.
But it's time for the big one. I think he's
an elite. He's amor on Saint Brown. He's really an
elite receiver. And so I have loved everything Washington has done.
But it's really fun. We've talked about this windows you
see it now in the NBA now like seven different

(30:04):
champions in seven years. The Denver Nuggets got old and
expensive really fast. Everybody loves Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City just
paid those three young guys eight hundred and twenty two
million combined. No more bench. These windows in the NFL close.
The Niners for three years in a row, had a
stacked roster. Now they're peeling off the funga and greenlaw

(30:28):
and they're good players. Debo's gone. They're good players getting
old fast. The Detroit Lions were like, yeah, this is
just the beginning for the Detroit Lions. Now you lost
both great coordinators, you lost rag Now a Pro Bowl center,
and oh, by the way, your young studs, a couple

(30:49):
of them don't be getting paid here. So you can
look at Jadan Daniels, go, he's just going into year two,
Jadeen Daniels. The bargain is going to be Daniels the
Brinks truck in about two years because you're paying him early.
So and my take is he's healthy, he's young. Cliff Kingsbury.

(31:10):
What if Kingsbury after this year leaves and you miss
on a coordinator or the one you want, turns you
down right. There's a lot of good quarterbacks in the league,
a lot of good coordinators. When you're a good offensive coordinator,
you don't leave a good situation. You can get a
head job. I mean, Cliff Kingsbury is a bit of

(31:31):
a gift. That's a way better than average offensive coordinator.
So this stuff gets I mean it strike when the
iron is hot. I don't I just sign him, get
it done, move on, do not waste September. I mean,
remember the Legion of Boom became the Legion of bust
about two years in. I thought that thing was gonna

(31:53):
last forever. Maybe I was a Seattle Homer. I thought,
we gotta, we gotta, we have it. I've said it
on the air ten time. We had a And all
of a sudden, this guy comes in a division and
that guy leaves, and Russ and Pete and then Earl Thomas,
and then Russell makes a throw at the super Bowl
and divides the locker room, and all of a sudden,
it's like, yeah, that that thing didn't work at all.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
So I get it done.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Just everything Washington's done to this point, I've loved this.
I don't love the home you have worked so hard
to get and pay for.

Speaker 3 (32:30):
You know, you own the part of that home. It's
called equity.

Speaker 1 (32:34):
At Rocket Mortgage, they'll show you how to turn that
equity that's the part of the house.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
You own into cash.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
All on thoughts I will be there. I talked to
Kevin naw yesterday. He's funny. I can't wait for it.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
So one of the truths of dynasties is that part
of a dynasty is dominating those that are in nept
around you, giving you home field advantage and easy wins.
And so Travis Kelcey was talking about the Super Bowl
and you know, they got, they got for the second

(33:42):
time they got. They got absolutely blown out. And you know,
I mean it happens. You can dominate your conference or
your division, but when you go face the best team
from the utter division, you better be tight, and twice
they've had injuries on the offensive line.

Speaker 3 (33:56):
So here is Travis.

Speaker 1 (33:57):
Kelce, just just moving off that awful Super Bowl loss.

Speaker 4 (34:02):
I've thrown that thing in the trash.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
I moved on.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
I don't know, I haven't.

Speaker 2 (34:05):
I thought they'd habits sooner than then.

Speaker 5 (34:08):
You can imagine I was pretty focused on this year
in the off season.

Speaker 1 (34:13):
So I do not think Kansas City's I think Kansas
City the dynasty part is over. They may win a
Super Bowl, but I think their division's too good to
be a dynasty. And I'll give you an example when
when Nick Saban was at Alabama, LSU couldn't get the
right coach, Auburn couldn't get the right coach, Ole Miss

(34:34):
couldn't get the right coach. For most of it, Tennessee
couldn't get the right coach, and he dominated. But then
Georgia got Kirby Smart and then Texas came in with
Sark and Nick Saban didn't look as dominating. Same thing
happened to Urban at Florida when Nick Saban came in, Yeah,
Urban Meyer was dominating, and then Nick Saban went to

(34:55):
a great program, and then Urban wasn't dominating. And if
you look at Lebron's dominance for eight nine, ten years
in the Eastern Conference, he had to beat the Raptors
and the Pacers. He would go into the other conference,
he didn't have the same luck when you're facing the Warriors. Right,
same with Tom Brady. Brady's great But one of the
things that was never spoken about. The Colts used to

(35:18):
be in the Patriots Division. Then they left, and you know,
he got home field advantage almost every year. Anytime he
had to go to Denver, he would lose. He would
struggle in Denver. Brady the greatest ever. Oh Denver, that
wasn't the same. But because the Jets and the Dolphins
and the Bills for most of his stay were inept,
Brady would get it. He'd go five and one in

(35:40):
division or six and oh and so Brady gets home
field in cold weather, huge advantage. With the best defensive
coach of all time. All he had to do is
win a couple of playoff games because they get a bye. Okay,
so you tell me Tom Brady and Bill Belichick with
an extra week to prepare at home and Fox in

(36:00):
their prime, Yeah, it's an advantage. They lost to the
Giants twice in Super Bowl. They lost the Philadelphia and
a Super Bowl. They weren't nearly as invincible on the
other side. But part of what they did is they
took advantage of the ineptitude of their division to get
home field advantage. And Kansas City deserves all the credit

(36:20):
in the world. They've taken advantage of Justin Herbert with
bad coaches, They've taken advantage of Denver and a rebuild,
and the Raiders in a perpetual rebuild.

Speaker 3 (36:29):
They deserve credit for all of it.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
But there's never been a division with four head coaches
that have been to a Super Bowl. I mean, the
Raiders now have Tom Brady overseeing it, Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly,
and the very competent Geno Smith. Would you be shocked
if the Raiders split every series in the Vision?

Speaker 3 (36:46):
I would not.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
And bo Nicks Year two was Sean Payton. He made
the playoffs as a rookie. I mean, and they got money. Now,
Kansas City doesn't have the money to go buy Whufunga
in Greenlaw. Denver does so, and I'll give Kansas City
all the credit in the world. But last year five
of their wins in division, all of them won possession games.

(37:13):
Denver is going to be noticeably better. The Raiders are
going to be significantly better. And Jim Harbaugh's career year two,
everywhere he's ever been. Year one, he changes the culture,
Year two, he changes the personnel. He needs two years
of drafting, two years of free agency. I just saw
somebody the other day pick the Charters to win Super Bowl.

(37:34):
I don't know if they will, but they'll be noticeably
better than last year when they just had too many
weak spots on the O line, a wide receiver at
tight end. They've solved a lot of those riddles. So
it's and here's the thing about dynasties is that and
I've said this about Mahomes. Mahomes only makes about three

(37:55):
plays a game, same with Michael Jordan. That's jaw dropping.
Michael was the best mid range player ever. And Mahomes
is unbelievable on layups, never misses them, doesn't miss layups.
That's ninety percent of the sport. Michael never missed the
open sixteen footer when he had to hit it, and
once or twice a game he'd stick his tongue out,

(38:16):
switch hands in mid air and you'd go, I've never
seen that before. But if you've been trailing by nine
points at that moment against the Lakers, would it.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
Have mattered, right?

Speaker 1 (38:26):
So, I mean it's a prime example is that nobody
hit Clayton Kershaw or Sandy Kofax in their prime. The
great hitters hit the number three starter, dominate the middle relievers,
and beat average closers.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
I mean, go to the World.

Speaker 1 (38:40):
Series last year Yankees and Dodgers. The Dodgers ate the
Yankee pitching alive, not Garrett Cole. They couldn't hit Garrett Cole.
The only time the Yankees looked like they were the
Dodgers equal were the two starts that Garrett Cole had
two starts, one earned run total against the team in
baseball the Dodgers. Nobody hits Garrett Cole when he's on.

(39:04):
Nobody hits Garrett Cole, and and Nick Saban just never
lost games he should have won. He could lose to
Johnny Manziel, he could lose that one game to Auburn.
The special teams blunder. But so much of dynasties is
just taking care of the home games, taking care of business.
When Big Ben was in his prime, and the Steelers

(39:25):
were getting the Super Bowls. They owned Cleveland and they
owned Cincinnati. They didn't own Baltimore. They didn't known Baltimore.
They lost to Baltimore all the time. And we're losing
the crappy Bengals pre Burrow and weren't losing the Browns
very much.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
So that's part of it.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
J Mack Around the corner, J Max's hosting the show tomorrow.
Around the corner is Greg Cosell.

Speaker 5 (39:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (39:49):
By the way, I've been percolating one of my spicier
takes for twenty twenty five. I'm gonna save it for
tomorrow when you're on the golf course with you know who,
whoever you're golfing with tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
But it's going to be a little spicy, all right.

Speaker 1 (40:06):
I appreciates, right, I always appreciate you saving your best
material and not presenting it to the audience in in
you know, when I'm on I always i'm.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
The comedian working you know, off Broadway or what have you.

Speaker 1 (40:20):
Yeah, if you and I, I think you and I
have both said this. The AFC West is the best
division in football, but it is easily the best coach
division of all time.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Even the coordinators are great. I mean, wait, the old.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
Coordinators are Spags Chip Kelly jesse mentor I mean those
are those are three of the top coordinators in for
eight minutes. I mean, I don't know. I will say this.
I don't think it's a reach. I don't think Kansas
City wins the division. I don't and I think they'll
make the playoffs, but I'm not sure right now. And

(40:54):
I this is going to be the hardest division to call.
Is Denver the best team in division?

Speaker 3 (40:58):
Who's got the better roster? Denver as the city Denver? Okay,
better coach well and he reads the best coach.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
Okay, but it's close though, it's not. You know, come on,
you would have both great. Yeah, the Peyton's got an
argument for number two or three or four.

Speaker 3 (41:13):
Yeah. The big difference is at QUARTERBA.

Speaker 1 (41:15):
I say, I say this, I think the roster is
better for Denver because I like Denver's offensive line over
Kansas City's and I think Green Lawn Hufunga are star players.

Speaker 6 (41:25):
There's no debate Denver has a better roster. They're the
best roster in the division. Cout Denver is a tell
like seven roster.

Speaker 3 (41:32):
In the league.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
Yeah yeah, no, I so I just I. And again,
part of dominating and being a dynasty is getting all
those good seeds and home playoff games.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
I don't think Kansas City is getting
