Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go. It is a Thursday. Lamar Jackson returns
tonight to the NFL. Austin Reeve. What to make of
that Dodgers Jays? We know what to make of it.
LA's in big trouble live in Chicago. It's the Herd.
Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Thanks
(00:49):
for making us part of your day. A Halloween Eve show.
Tip of the cap again to the people at our
company that make our set look the way it does.
We always appreciate that. One hour from now, Greg Cosell
stops by. You know, when they were beating the Reds
and the Phillies and they were beating the Brewers J Mack,
the Dodgers' bats had a way of making teams, pitching
(01:13):
staffs and bullpens uncomfortable. That is exactly now. What is
happening to the Dodgers' bullpen and the Dodgers starting staff.
So here's where we start today. How about Trey That
was unbelievable. The best thing for baseball, honestly, privately, is
the Dodger struggling being on the brink because last year
when they dominated the Yankees in the World Series, a
(01:35):
minute later, it's like the sport's uneven.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
This is not fair.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
There's a massive financial gap. It's just not fair. It
felt like Katie to the Warriors first year they go
sixteen to one of the playoffs. So the Big Ten
winning a Natty or the Chiefs getting blown out in
Super Bowls, big picture, gives everybody else hope. This Dodger
team was flawed all season long. We talked about it.
They blew twenty six saves. Mookie Betts, who had a
(01:59):
great September not hitting now, didn't hit until September. He
had an injury or an illness early. He's been off
all season. Blake Snell opens the game with a couple
of fastballs. Both get jacked out. So from the very beginning,
it was the Blue Jays bats making the Dodgers uncomfortable.
(02:23):
Blake Snell after giving up two bombs in the first inning,
had to abandon his fastball. So again, what the Dodgers
did for three series is what the Jays are doing
to the Dodgers now. And Trey Ya Savage amazing Another
amazing story. This kid wasn't in Major League baseball when
(02:46):
the season started. He was in single A ball. There
used to be low A high A. It's now just
single A ball. It's basically like really slightly better than
great high school baseball. You don't stay in a hotel,
you have a host family. Last night, struck out twelve.
Only one Dodger got into scoring position for the record,
(03:10):
Otani Betson Freeman held hitless. In fact, the last two games,
the Dodgers as a team are hitting a buck sixty four.
Their MVPs are mia. And here is Trey you Savage
finishing off his night in the seventh right here.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Chopper to third, Clement the second over the first double play.
The World Series masterpiece from twenty two year old Trey
Yes Savage.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
He struck out every Dodger at least once. We thought
the Dodgers would hit their way to a title. Yet
they've scored sixty four total runs in the playoffs. The
Jays are at one hundred and county and no baseball
team has repeated since the Derek Jeter Yankees. And there's
a reason for it. It's exceptionally hard, more than any sport.
(04:03):
I mean, you got to get your starting pitching in sync.
You got to get your timely hits at the perfect time.
You've got to fix your batting order, right guys in
front of the right guys, top tier pitching, bullpen's got
to be good enough. So the Dodgers may have built
the perfect Major League Baseball machine, but maybe they forgot
(04:25):
to put in the clutch because the team right now
that is making the other team uncomfortable. It's Toronto, And
here is Dave roberts on making Game six adjustments in Canada.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
I'm not sure if it's mooking the two, mooking the three,
Freddy in the three, I'm not sure. But at the
end of the day, regardless of you know, who we
run out there or what construct, we still got to
take good at bats, all of us, you know, And
so that's what I'm betting on.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, the Dodgers had a lot of bad at bats
last night, but when you got one guy in scoring position.
Is it just the Jay's pitching is part of it? Pressure,
whatever it is, it's working. First inning on when you
force Blake Snell to abandon his fastball, you're officially in
the Dodgers wheelhouse. You're in the Dodgers head Okay, he
(05:19):
did it again. No Luca, no Lebron, in fact, no
Aunt Edwards. And the star of the show buzzer beater
was Austin Reeves of the Lakers. Twenty eight points and
sixteen assists. What are we to make of him? Well,
first of all, he's a great American sports story. First,
you're in the NBA. He averaged seven, then thirteen, then sixteen,
then twenty. Suddenly he's averaging thirty four. My guess is
(05:41):
it's going to go down a little bit. It is
the best case scenario for the Lakers. They can show
him off to the NBA. He's getting to the free
throw line twelve times. He's always created contact. The issue
isn't is he a good players? A very good player?
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Right?
Speaker 1 (05:58):
The question is can you mat surmise his game with
the Lakers. He needs the ball in his hands. You
should see his numbers playing with Lebron and without him
He's a different player entirely c plus to aus. So
what do you do with him? He's showing the league
Maybe Houston, the Celtics, Miami. No, I can initiate offense.
(06:19):
I'll get to the free throw line. I'm physical, I'll
work hard on the defensive end, albeit it won't be great.
Is he too good to trade or is he the
perfect trade piece? Again, Luca needs the ball to dominate,
and Luca is arguably the second best player.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
In the world.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Some nights, the very best. Maybe Austin Reeves is thinking
I want the ball. I want this to continue. So
watching him last night, here's what I kept thinking watching
Austin Reeves. Are the new owners. This is not the
Bus family. The Bus Family needed Lebron for six and
a half years. They needed him he was selling tickets.
(06:57):
They were a mess pre Lebron. Remember end of the
Kobe days. They weren't very good. They were bad all
the time, right, we remember Kobe's last game, sixty points,
a lot of forgettable years. Are the new Laker owners.
We have a lot of money, and it's about the
long term, not selling tickets necessarily thinking to themselves, you know,
(07:20):
maybe it's Lebron. We don't need I mean Lebron reportedly
in his fields because he hasn't gotten the contract extension.
My take is the only two absolutes going forward are
Luca and JJ Reddick. This is no longer a league
of a big three. It's a duo league. But maybe
the Lakers are a big three Luca, JJ Reddick and
(07:44):
Austin Reeves. I mean, this is what happens. You're given opportunities,
somebody takes a day off work, somebody's sick. You step
in with no Luca and no Lebron. JJ Reddick is
leaning on him. He gets the free throw line, always had,
initiates contact, always has hitting his shots, usually does, so
this is one of those moments. The new owners are
(08:07):
looking at this. And my take last night was God,
the kids first or second in the league. Now nobody
plays defense already in the season, so everybody's numbers are
a little glossy. A lot of guys shooting fifty five percent.
I get it, but it's impossible not to pay attention
right and these new owners, they're still assessing the situation.
They made it very clear JJ Reddick and with a
(08:30):
contract extension Luca, they're the future, but it's not a
Big three league. It's now a duo league. And Austin
Reeves when you compare them to larn is much cheaper, younger, healthier,
and let's be honest, less maintenance. Here's JJ Reddick on
(08:51):
Austin Reeves last night.
Speaker 6 (08:54):
That guy is gonna show up in the big moments.
It's not surprised. He's done that manuchy times in his career.
He's done that many times since I've been his coach.
Feel very comfortable with him making decisions at late game.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
And Austin Reeves scored half of his points against Jaden McDaniels,
who's a elite defensive player. So it's been very, very impressive.
And it's just opportunities. You know, somebody misses work, somebody
misses a game, you step in. But if it was
the old owners, the bus family, I don't think this
would be as significant. They love Austin Reeves, they've paid
(09:29):
him nothing and he's very productive. But the new owners
look at the world differently. When somebody buys a company,
they see the world differently. They don't cling this stuff.
Usually they don't want old and higher maintenance. They like young, cheaper, healthier, coachable.
(09:50):
Austin Reeves is a very attractive player to any new
ownership group. That's what I saw last night, And JAMG,
I know how much you love Austin Reeves, but it
is interesting. As I'm watching it, I'm thinking about the
new ownership group how they view him, and it's like
cost dependability, health maintenance. I mean, there is something about
(10:12):
Lebron The downside of being an older star athlete is
you can suck the oxygen out of her own a
little bit, right. Austin Reeves is like it wasn't for
the headband, you know, you never pick him up, and
that there is something to be said about a new
coach a young player. It's just it's fascinating.
Speaker 7 (10:30):
Yeah, you know, I don't know if I said this
to you on air or off, but I look at
Austin Reeves next to Luka Danci said, I'm like, why
can't Austin be Kyrie Irving? Kyrie and Luca went to
the NBA Finals two years ago, and I'm not saying
Austin Reeves is Kyrie.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
So that can be that.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Okay, okay, but you're missing the big part of that.
Why did Luca and Kyrie work because they had a long,
devastating front line. They're both bad. That's not Oh yeah,
that's a that's well, you can move off Lebron.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
You bring it, you bring in bigs right.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Well again, Luca and Austin Reeves are not Kyrie and
Luca with Dallas's front line in size. DeAndre Ayden's a
bad defensive player. Okay, so that it works only because
of what Dallas can provide in rim protection. Having Luca
and Austin Reeves is fun. It's not beating the best
teams in the West, who mostly all do have rim
(11:27):
protection and better wings. It's the first week of the
NBA season. The first two weeks, nobody's playing defense. It's
a lot of fun. You can't overreact, but I guarantee
you the new owners, just to anybody out there that's
ever bought a new business or you're part of a
new company, you view it differently than how the old
people viewed it. In the Bus family, they felt kind
(11:48):
of tied at the hip with Lebron, right, like they
had sacrifices they brought him in. These new guys are like, hey,
we like him, we have no connection to him.
Speaker 7 (11:57):
Yeah, I love Austin. You know, I've been on that
bandwagon for a while. Everybody's saying, oh, we could ship
him for Giannis. Doesn't seem realistic. Colin the team I
heard last night that is interested in Austin Reeves. Keep
an eye on the Utah Jazz Lori. Markanen is a
budding star. He's younger than Reeves. He's a big I
think he had fifty points earlier this week, was outstanding
(12:20):
in the summer marketing.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
It's been a great score since he walked into the league.
The guy that can run the floor.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
I would keep an eye.
Speaker 7 (12:25):
You know, you get your pair a couple of euros
Luca and Lourie Markinen. I know he's not an awesome defender,
but I would just keep an eye on that going forward. Again,
I'm not trying to trade Austin Reeves, but I just
put that.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
On your radar.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
A one hour from now, Greg Cosell, very interesting NFL
Weekend Bill's Chiefs highlights that Lamar plays tonight.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
All right, you're now entering the No Bull Zone sponsored
by Credible Great Rage done to the bull. So I
saw something yesterday. I remember years ago reading a story
about Jerry Jones and his wife think her name is Jane,
and she was saying, Jerry, you just can't get out
of your own way sometimes. You know, Jerry loves the publicity.
He likes to talk after games. He's on land Man
(13:47):
in an acting role. So he said something yesterday and
I thought, oh, this is just not gonna land well,
this is this is not gonna land well. So he
was talking to the Wall Street Journal and Jerry Jones
had a quote. As he was talking to the Wall
Street journally goes, there's a hundred billion present value with
gas out there. That's why I'm talking to you on
the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with
the Cowboys. Yeah, that's just not going to go over that. Well, listen,
(14:10):
I want my GM grinding tape and studying the cap sheet.
Howie Roseman Trade Deadline just picked up a slot corner yesterday,
less neat a couple of days earlier, they got a corner.
Jerry was checking out natural gas locations in the Pacific.
(14:31):
And this is why a lot of billionaires, for the record,
end up on boards instead of running a singular company.
They're distracted, They're busy. So but I mean the way
the Cowboys are. Strangely, they're very good at making big deals.
I like the Mica deal, I like the George picken deal.
George pickensneal is excellent. They're also very good on their
first and usually second round picks. But I would argue,
(14:54):
if you look at the Super Bowl favorites right now,
it's Green Bay, it's you know, Kansas City or a Detroit.
They're very good fourth round, fifth round, sixth round and
getting their number one picks right. So Pooka Nakua, less need,
he's not talking about oil reserves. Gets Pooka Nakua in
the fifth. He's a star. Kyron Williams running back in
(15:15):
the fifth, he's a star. Undrafted left tackle. Not a
lot of those exist. Higgsby the tight end, fourth rounder.
That's why they can go pay for Devontae Adams because
Poka Nuku is free for three or four years. So
I think, I think this league there's a lot of
minutia to be a good general manager in this league,
a ton of minutia. The Cowboys do a very good
(15:37):
job on the big stuff. I will defend the Mica
trade forever. In fact, I would say the best draft
pick the Cowboys have made is not a first round
draft pick. It's Dak Prescott. And they got Dak Prescott
in the fourth round. And the reason they were able
to extend and pay that O line for all those
years is they were paying Dak nothing for four years nothing.
(16:00):
He was free and he was winning double digit games.
So of all the draft picks, it's not getting Tyron
Smith or Zach Martin or Miicah. Dack's their best draft
pick as a fourth rounder. Brock perty I don't think
he saved the Niners, But after the Trey Lance fiasco,
they were desperate to get a quarterback that they could
(16:22):
monetize at a beneficial level. And there's no more beneficial
level than getting the last player picked to be your
starting quarterback for four or five years. Then you can
go pay for a Mac Jones to be a backup.
So so much of this league is minutia. And when
I read that, I think, you know, is Jerry really
the general manager? Is he really the acting general manager?
(16:44):
I don't know, but running several billion dollar companies simultaneously
that aren't related at all does not feel ideal. Again,
Kansas City, Detroit and Green Bay teams that draft and
developed and fine gems. Fine Gems are Super Bowl favorites.
So the big stuff I don't worry about. They got
(17:05):
their quarterback, they got that right. They get their first
round picks right, George Pickens, Micah Trade, they get that
stuff right. It's the stuff in the middle nobody talks
about that helped build the Rams. I mean Trey Smith,
Tyreek Hill, late rounder for Kansas City, Trey Smith. J
Mack with the News, this is the herd Line News,
(17:30):
give out what the Chiefs did with Tyreek Hill later
round pick didn't pay anything, and instead of paying them
the big Buck Big Buck shipped him off and get
five more picks. Tyreek Hill, Mahomes is their best draft
pick ever. Second is Tyreek Hill, who got great production,
never had to pay him, then moved him and got
five or six more picks. That's the way to play
(17:51):
the chess game in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
I like it all right.
Speaker 7 (17:54):
Let's get started with those Chiefs, Colin. They have the
biggest game of the week nine. They are going to Buffalo.
We talked about it yesterday. The Bills kind of owned
them in the regular season with a four to one record.
We won't talk about the playoffs. You already know the answer.
Mahomes talked about that rivalry and the thin margin, saying
every single game comes down to one play here or there, and.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
That they have made them.
Speaker 7 (18:17):
I think it comes down to players making plays in
big moments.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
So some illuminating.
Speaker 7 (18:22):
Stuff there from Patrick Mahomes. You want the real story here?
Here it is, Colin. In the high leverage games, Josh
Allen carries the team okay. Against the Chiefs, he averages
over ten carries per game by far more carries than
he does in any other game. So I'll remember that
Ravens game in Week one, Josh Allen had fourteen carries.
(18:44):
Big game, they needed it. He hasn't sniffed that since
against the Patriots rivalry in the Division. Nine carries last
week against the Panthers three. Expect Josh Allen to put
the team on his back and try to take them
to victory like he did last year in Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Yeah, listen, it's an interesting line based on what we've
seen from the two deep. There are two lines this
week that are fascinating. How are the Colts only a
three point favorite? They have been the most efficient offense
the two best teams I've watched the Steelers play the Seahawks,
and the Packers pulled away and dominated the second half.
(19:21):
The Pittsburgh Steelers against good teams, have about a half
in them. I could argue the Colt right now are
playing better than the Seahawks and Green Bett And so
that line of don't get and I don't get this one.
Kansas City has the much better defense Situationally, we love
this coach. The weather's not a factor, and offensively they've
got so many more weapons for Mahomes to throw to
(19:43):
highlight Kansas City by a touchdown, by a touchdown, I
think there's a lot of scoring.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
So the Bills with Josh Allen, I'm looking back in
the archives here. They haven't lost a game as a
home underdog in like five years.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Collin.
Speaker 7 (19:58):
This is a rare spot for them. Now is a
favorite against the Patriots. You know they lost, they'll loses
a favorite, but as a dog, I don't know, man,
this You don't think McDermott's going to be yelling at
the team. Hey, nobody respects you. Okay, you lost to
the Falcons. It's so easy for him to get this
team amped up. I know, No, Ed Oliver, that's big.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
I think the amped up stuff is great for about
a series. Well you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Tomlin has thrived off that for a time.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
That's right for about a half, and then watch the
Steelers in the second half of seasons. They've been terrible
down the stretch last year, and they've been terrible in
the second half this year against good teams. I think
all that raw rossed up you see it in college
teams run through the smoke. It's good for about a series.
Then you got to kick butt. Then you gotta have
better players. So I just I I so, by the way,
(20:45):
you got one of their primary defenders is not playing.
I think Kansas City. It is Kansas City in these spots.
I just trust the coach, the quarterback, the schemes, spags
highlight Kansas City.
Speaker 7 (20:59):
Have you heard anybody taking Buffalo here? Or is everybody
and their mom on Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
At two and a half, I would say Kansas City.
Speaker 7 (21:08):
Yeah, everybody's loaded up on the Chiefs here. I just
want to remind people. I know, Kansas City beat Detroit,
and they cammered the Raiders, and they beat Marcus Mariota.
They went to Jacksonville. Look kind of good but not great.
Let the Jags move up and down the field against
him at will. And they lost Psyche to Jacksonville. Okay,
the idea that they're going in a buffalo and winning
by a touchdown? Hey, listen, how's this?
Speaker 1 (21:30):
How's this?
Speaker 3 (21:30):
We'll make a fun bet.
Speaker 7 (21:32):
If the Chiefs win this game, I will stop bashing
them for the rest of the regular season. Feel sure,
I will not say anything negative about the Chiefs the
rest of the season. If they go in and win
this game. I don't know how I'm to hold myself
to that, but I'll try. All right, let's move on
Collin Pittsburgh Steelers. You are hot on these Steelers. They're
four and three, little fugazi of a record. You know,
(21:55):
they got a big one this weekend. Interestingly, Mike Tomlin,
I know we don't want to use the word hot seat,
but this is strange.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
So a writer at the Pittsburgh Post.
Speaker 7 (22:05):
Gazette was doing one of those like answer Fan Question
deals and apparently owner Art Rooney is frustrated and growing
impatient he should with Mike Tomlin's lack of recent playoff success,
with the last playoff when coming in twenty seventeen. Now,
so I'm gonna let me ask you, why would you
drop this in the middle of the season when they're
(22:26):
four and three? How come you weren't saying this when
they were leading the division in.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Four and two and ride n Why? Now? What's going
on here?
Speaker 1 (22:35):
I think the thing that hurts Tomlin is there. You know,
he has a saying that I think is a great saying.
Mike Tomlin always says two is a trend. Well, what's
seven seven years when you can't get your old line right.
So Mike Tomlin held to his own standards, where he
says two is a trend. We have four years now
where they've been the most expensive defense and have not
(22:56):
been great in big spots. Four seven years. They can't
get their run game consistent. So Mike Tomlin's own words
is by if you do something twice, it is a trend.
The trend is Pittsburgh cannot beat good teams. They don't
win playoff games. They spend a fortune on their defense
and it's not good. And the other trend that I
(23:17):
see is where you know you watched green Bay and
Pittsburgh last week. Small market green Bay has totally embraced
what the NFL is creative offensive head coach, drafting very
high receivers, tight ends weapons, buying a very expensive pass rusher. Steelers,
(23:42):
what are you doing? They just went and got another
safety a couple of days ago at the trade headline.
It's not about your defense. I mean, I'll say this again,
Aaron is doing Tomlin a solid. If they had Trubisky,
if they had Kenny Pickett, what would this team be.
Aaron is keeping them interesting and viable. They're very good
in the red zone now only because of Aaron Rodgers.
(24:05):
So Aaron sort of He's makeup for a lot of
the blemishes here, Aaron. That's why I've been defending Aaron.
PFF and others are like, well, he doesn't throw the
ball down the field. You take Aaron out of this
and you give them their previous four or five quarterbacks. Idiot,
never forget what they look like at the end of
last year. In the last five games, it was unwatchable
(24:27):
on offense.
Speaker 7 (24:28):
So I will just say one for ten on third
down against the Packers, they just could big spots. Rogers
could not come up. Now, he should have a lot
of success against the Colts. Their back end is not great.
This Colts defense is not outstanding. I mean, listen, I
don't care what they do against the Titans. I do
think their offense is going to move up and down
the field against this overpriced defense.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Is a tough one.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Colin.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Is it making Blazon five?
Speaker 1 (24:52):
It's being strongly considered.
Speaker 7 (24:55):
Yeah, at some point the Steelers defense is going to
show up.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Right, we would agree on that.
Speaker 7 (25:00):
They can't continue to get m basted every weekend, right,
So maybe this is the spot. Daniel Jones outside does
he eventually does. Does the milk carton expire on Danielson?
We're waiting for him to go to turn into the
regular Daniel Jones. Final story, Collin, this is not great
for one of your picks, Brock Purdy. He's missed four
(25:20):
straight games and he's coming back from that toe injury.
Here we got an audio a Kyle Shanahan. It doesn't
sound like Purdy is a lot to play. Take a
listen to Kyle Shanahan on his quarterback.
Speaker 9 (25:31):
That he feels confident he's ready to go based off
how his toe feels. I mean, I mean he's gonna
look that way most likely from getting out there, and
he's not gonna he gets out there and he's hobbling
around and stuff. He won't be out there. So he's
got to go out there and go through the practices
and stuff and really let us know how good he feels,
because it's hard to know what's going on with the
toe and they're really iffy things.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
I really like San Francisco this weekend. They come off
a clunker. Shanahan's been barking, and I also think Mac
Jones is in the argument for the best backup in
the league. I thought it actually last week that didn't
play well at all. I thought he had a couple
of unbelievable throws. I think Mac throws a again, not
a big mover, not a huge arm, but sit in
the pocket. Give him a two two thousand and three beat.
(26:16):
He throws a pretty good ball, he does.
Speaker 7 (26:19):
Yeah, I'm slowly backing away like that Homer Simpson meme
where he backs away into the shrubbery. I'm slowly backing
off the Niners, Colin. I mean, I think they win this,
but you know, Jackson Dart is that scrambling quarterback. Those
guys have given Sala's defense a lot of problems, and
the Niners offensive line did not look great against the Texans.
(26:42):
It kind of folded a little bit there. I mean,
Mac Jones, I know you love him, he was not great.
I mean they had zero first downs with like two
minutes left in the half. Colin, that's I watched ANEMK,
So be careful. My friend j Mack with the news, Well.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
That's the news, and thanks for stopping the herd line news.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
So I was singing about this watching the Dodgers last night.
Is that there? And I've said this before, there are
two sports that you have a lot of downtime and
a lot of time to think. And for men who think,
they often overthink. And I guess women too, Golf and baseball,
and I've seen great golfers collapse. I mean, go back
to Rory McElroy, you know double bogies, Uh you know,
(27:26):
uh it Masters, right, He's struggling on Sunday at his
seventeenth Masters. I think I think a little bit of
this is the Dodgers are in their head. A lot
of it's Toronto pitching, but I think they're suffering from
Jay's pitching and intense pressure. La Is hitting two to
oh one against Toronto. I mean, give me a break.
(27:47):
Freddie Freeman, Betts, Max Munsey, OTAWNI one Dodger in scoring
position all night. So the Dodgers they hear, they see,
and they read everything written about him going into this series.
And first I think it motivated. I think really good
teams are motivated. But the fact is they don't even
have George Springer and they're beating the Dodgers up. And
(28:08):
the other thing, the Blue Jays are four and oh
in the playoffs when they trail, so they're built for this.
That eighteen inning game. They're kind of built for it. Reportedly,
their clubhouse that Joe Davis was talking about, it's like
spring training. Now. They're playing music, they're laughing, they're having fun,
and the Dodgers are are a little bit tight. That
(28:29):
is the downside to hearing and seeing and reading how
great you are. And but you know, the Dodgers went
into this season. I mean, just think about this. They
went into this season. Mookie Bets wasn't available in September,
bullpen was a bit of a mess. Starting pitchers had injuries.
They were a flawed baseball team. But I've seen great
golfers collapse in majors. I've seen great hitters in a
(28:52):
World Series go belly up. I saw Lebron freeze, literally
freeze against Dallas in the NBA Finals. Lebron James. I mean,
Rory McElroy's shooting one over Sunday at the Masters, two
bogie's and a double. That's not because he forgot how
to golf. I think that a little bit of this
is the Dodgers came in as a favorite, and there
(29:13):
is there is so much media now, there are so
many platforms you can't avoid it. I mean I put
my phone down for hours at a time and just
watch sports. I just want to watch sports generationally. I
didn't grow up with a phone. That's probably easier to
me than if you're twenty eight or thirty eight. But
you can't avoid stuff. I mean, I have people coming
(29:34):
up to me all the time, Oh I saw you
on TikTok or Instagram.
Speaker 6 (29:37):
More.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
It doesn't have to be on TV or radio all
the time. So the Dodgers are obviously sitting around waiting
for the game, seeing stuff, and I think a bit
of it's in their head. Never forget this. The Dodgers
over under was one hundred and three in Vegas. We
looked up this morning that the Jays was seventy eight
and a half. So one team is coming into this
World Series seventy eight and a half wins. Yankees picked
(29:59):
to win the division. Maybe Boston second. Yeah, Toronto will
scrap around, you know, at the bottom, just fighting hopefully
to get into the wild cards. So I think I
think a lot of what the Dodgers are facing to
hit this poorly. A guy that was in single ay
to start the season, I mean looks like Verlander in
(30:20):
his prime against you. I'm not saying the kid's not excellent.
He's not Verlander in his prime. Some of this is
it in the Dodger's head. Trey you Savage, here's the
starter after taking a three to two lead in the series.
Speaker 10 (30:34):
I had hit a hitter the same all at this level,
every hitter can do damage. So I mean, it's just
another strikeout. It's a crazy world, crazy world. Hollywood couldn't
have made it this good. So just being a part
of this, I'm just very blessed.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
I mean, it is remarkable. He started the year in
single A baseball. It's just I mean, that is several
notches before Belthow the G League, in the NBA, and
he had just handcuffed the Dodgers. Bad at bats, bad
swings by star players. It goes and heads to Canada. Now.
Speaker 2 (31:13):

Speaker 1 (31:40):
So it's interesting. As college football heats up, sometimes the
best answer about a new job is saying no. So
there's a lot of talk about Lane Kiffen leaving Ole Miss,
where he's a messiah, right and going to LSU or
going to Penn State or going to Florida. So I'll
(32:01):
just say this, I know Lane a little bit. Lane
Kiffin bolted Tennessee. How did that work out? Lane Kiffen
was the youngest coach in the NFL at one point
with the Raiders, he got fired, He got his perfect
job at USC, fired again, this time on the tarmac
of an airport. How'd that work out? I think Lane Kiffin,
(32:21):
in my opinion, is best suited for Old Miss because
I think he says what he thinks without much of
a filter. Can't do that at the big jobs. You
can absolutely do it. You can absolutely do it at
Old Miss, big fish, small pond. You can say whatever
you want. The other thing is, like Kurt Signetti is
revered at Indiana. You put the same coach at Alabama
(32:45):
and all he would hear is, well, you're not saving
So here's the LSU job. Literally, the governor yesterday is
talking about the fifty four million dollar contract they have
to write for Brian Kelly. And he's basically said, now
the a d at LSU, we're taking you out of
the next coaching signing. Here it is.
Speaker 11 (33:08):
We are not going down a failed path. And I
wanted to tell you something. This is a pattern. The
guy that's here now a rote that contract cost Texas
A and IM seventy something million dollars. Right now we
got a fifty three million dollar liability. We are not
doing that again. No, I can tell you right now,
(33:30):
Sabo was not selecting the next coach. Hell, I'll let
Donald Trump select it before I let him do it.
I don't know, but the Border super hus is going
to come up with a committee and they're gonna go
find us a coach.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
You want to enter that Hornet's nest, hard pass, No,
thank you. Penn State. I think Lane likes the southern weather.
Played at Fresno State, Southern California guy. I think he
likes the warm weather. I've said the Florida job maybe
works to he likes Florida. But it's a lot of
(34:02):
kiss in the ring when you go to the big jobs.
And Lane is a great play caller. I do not
think he's a politician, and you got to be a
little of both in these biggest jobs. It's a lot
of kiss in the ring. And I said yesterday, I
talked about the kind of the food chain, the pyramid
of the best jobs in the country, the top ten
jobs for a lot of different reasons. And I think Texas,
(34:24):
between the money, the boosters the city, is the best job.
LSU and Florida to me, we can put it up,
are both great jobs, but they come with different pressure
and different boosters. I think the best jobs to me Texas,
Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oregon. Phil Knight's given just
(34:46):
shy of three billion dollars to Oregon as long as
he's around. That's a great job. Alabama, SC, Michigan, Notre Dame.
You can tell me about Texas and A and M.
I've been told for forty years how great Texas and
gonna be. Just we'll see. I mean Indiana last year,
Indiana this year could be better than Texas, A and M.
(35:07):
And that's a basketball school historically. So I think those
big jobs, they're not for everybody, and they're not for
somebody who's kind of loose, who's kind of raw, who's
kind of outspoken, who can be kind of snarky. I
think old miss is great. And by the way, old
missus now gonna pay him whatever he wants. So you
tell me, in your current job, where you have rain
(35:30):
control and are respected, is it better making eleven twelve
percent less than the high pressure job. All I know
is I heard that governor of Louisiana yesterday. I'm like, no,
thank you. I am seacrest out on that job, and
LSU may be the best job in the country, but
(35:50):
the Governor's now telling I mean it's now literally a
political football job. Literally. I wouldn't take it. Nope, wouldn't
taco it. All right, So Lamar Jackson is back in
action tonight against Miami. I'll tell you Kansas City was
(36:10):
three and three. It's all good. Why mahomes Buffalo two
game losing streak, It's all good? Why Josh Allen. That's
the great thing about having a star quarterback is you
always have a way to very quickly dig yourself out
of a hole. I was looking at Baltimore's schedule today.
Think about this. The Raiders are two and five and
(36:32):
the Ravens are two and five and the wise guys
in the desert they like one of those two and
five teams. And it's not the home team, it's the Ravens.
Everybody loves the Ravens. Look at their next seven games Miami, Minnesota,
Cleveland Jets, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati. That feels like a seven game,
(36:54):
eight game winning streak to me. But it's must win tonight.
Here's Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 12 (37:02):
Past pretty much touched on not talking about that with
us in the team meeting. You know, East And every
game gonna be like a win a go home game.
You know, we started off first season ever started off
like this low. So we're gonna have to just do
it dow right now, Easton every week.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
You know, it's for years. I remember years ago there
was a story that Aaron Rodgers playing or the backup
playing in Green Bay, and at the time, it was
like the highest number that Aaron was worth, Like I
think the number was eleven points. And I think to
myself all the time, we undervalue quarterbacks. I mean, Anthony Richardson,
(37:41):
the Colts stink last year. Just getting Daniel Jones, they
could be the second, third, fourth best team in the
league from bad to super Bowl worthy. And that's just
with Daniel Jones. So, I mean, it was kind of
interesting watching Tyler Huntley last week pick apart the Bears,
(38:02):
and I'm like, this is Tyler Huntley, who's by all
means a serviceable, studious pro. He's excellent backup. But I mean,
it's just that's why it was so confounding to me
that at the beginning of June, when the Steelers and
Mike Tomlin were sort of slow playing the quarterback position.
(38:23):
I'm like, guys, it's June. Unless there's something working with
the back channels, how do you not have a quarterback
all lined up? And I've said this before, the offensive
coaches in this league take quarterback it feels like much
more seriously. But the Ravens right now are two and five,
and if you go back and look at their next
seven games, what is the only reason you like them
(38:45):
to be favored in all seven games. It's not the
old line, it's not their secondary, it's not Thererick Henry
Derrick Henry's around with Tyler Huntley, right like, why do
you like them for the next seven games? And I
always think about this too with quarterbacks. Lamar Jackson. When
you have a great quarterback, it allows you to call
(39:06):
plays and make throws that a backup can't. I mean,
Joe Burrow can make throws Jake Browning can't. Right, Lamar
Jackson can give you certain a certain identity offensively, and
you can take risks you can't. Right, I'll never have
a problem dropping Josh Allen justin Herbert Patrick Mahomes like
(39:31):
in the end zone, throwing from their own end zone.
But you ever think about this when you're watching the
game and your team doesn't have a star quarterback. Don't
you ever watch a football game You're at your like
three or four yard line and your quarterback drops in
the end zone and you can feel your shoulders tightened up, like, oh,
this isn't good. Andy Reid'll drop Patrick Mahomes in that
(39:54):
end zone ten out of ten times, And so Lamar
Jackson back tonight. I think it looks different. I think
it feels different, and I think the Ravens are going
to go on a long winning streak. And I don't
know what's happening with the numbers, but I can tell
you this. Blowouts the last two weeks have been a
common occurrence and if this got ugly, I don't think
(40:16):
it's Miami trouncing the Ravens. All right, Greg Cosell is
joining us around the corner. We are giving out, by
the way, NFL quarterback Halloween candy. Next hour we'll explain
that too. Hour one down, Hour two next
