Speaker 1 (00:24):
Here we go. Good second hour live in La. It's
The Herd wherever you may be and however you may
be listening.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Thanks for making us part of your day. Colin Right
called a wrong in about a minute. So I watched
the US Open golf at the La Country Club.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
It's a beautiful course, one that would never allow me
to be a member, A.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Very very nice course, Beverly Hills. For the uninitiated, it was.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
It's a really ritchy part of town holmby Hills, Beverly Hills.
It's like, you know, billion dollar homes on or whatever.
But it doesn't look as good as like a Pinehurst
and New or a Pebble Beach. It's not as mind blowing.
It's not as esthetically ooh uh. I was rooting rooting
(01:09):
hard for Rory. He did not win. It's a little foggy.
You see what we've been dealing with in Los Angeles.
It's not that sunny here right now this morning, it's
all gloomy, and you know whatever, Nobody cares about our problem.
But I but I did think it was a good yesterday.
It was a good day. And I also thought the
United States men's national team will talk about it in
a second.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
They look ready to roll.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Oh my gosh, big news based on this weekend and
how things went for the US.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Mexico, by the way, just fired their coach. So you
know you're playing well when you're getting other countries coaches fired.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
And he was on the job for about four and
a half months. That's how bad the US beat him
down on Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Colin right, Colin wrong. On a Monday, here we.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Go where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, Sean Payton's influence is virtually immediate. The story is
out that Russell Wilson is shedding weight. Translation, he'll go
back to bath ball on grass, which is what Sean
Payton told us he would do when he went to Denver.
He told me on air, he told me off air.
The key to Russell Wilson was getting him to play
(02:12):
like the Seattle Russell Wilson. So the story's out. Russell
Wilson is shedding weight. Translation, he'll be moving, which is
his superpower.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
And Oways has.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Been Where Colin was right, I was advocating for Nikola
Jokicic to be the real MVP. The MVP vote was
sadly an anti Jokich vote, but I said he was
more durable than Embiid. He elevates others more than Embiid,
his consistency is better than EMBIID, and he showed all
three through the playoffs. In fact, he led the finals
(02:44):
in points, rebounds, and assists that had never been done before,
even by Bill Russell, Lebron James, Magic Johnson.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
BYRD didn't matter.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
MJ Jokich is easily the most valuable player in the league. Unfortunately,
the MBP vote has become the mp most interesting person.
That's why Harden and Embid have won it in recent years.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Where Colin was wrong.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
What happened is Zion Williamson.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
When he came into the league after his first year,
I said he's going to have to ditch New Orleans
at some point. Now they want to ditch him, I mean,
can't stay healthy, not in shape, not very focused, hasn't
worked on his game's I think it's time to listen
to offers. I mean, you know, you can't keep doing
the same thing over and over again. It's possible. New
(03:37):
Orleans is a fun, lively food city. Maybe it's a
bad fit, maybe it's the organization. I don't know, but
I love this kid. I loved his personality, I loved
his game, and this thing has gone sideways with the
Pelicans where Colin was right. Bryce Young, rookie quarterback for Carolina.
Here's what the team's best defensive player, Brian Byrne said
(04:01):
about him last week.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
It's hard not to like that kid.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
He put He put quite a step on on on
the locker room. He walks around with this kind of
kind of humble excuse me, my Lagg's like humble, but
I know I'm the like type of type of swag,
you know what I'm saying, Like, you know, he got it,
but he humble with it.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
I said this during the draft. I thought he was
easily the top quarterback candidate. Accuracy, poise, experience, intuitive. Bryce
Young already turning heads from the stars with the Carolina.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Panthers, where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
The United States men's national team, down two of their
best players, rolled over Canada yesterday. I want to show
you a goal by an emerging young player, Follerin Ballighan,
who is going to be our next poolistic.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
Here framing six fleet, I meant the space of Konaga
on his rights on a night. Of course, puller In
Pollagon has his first international goal for the US.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
He could have chose England or the United States. We're
lucky enough to have him. This is the most skilled
United States men's national team roster ever, also the youngest.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Beat Mexico three. Nothing hammered Canada too.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Nothing in neither match didn't look athletically that close, young,
twitchy fast. Watch out World Cup where Colin was raw.
What's happening to baseball? Big markets and big stars are
in the tank. The Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros all got
sweat this weekend. The Dodgers bullpens a bit of a mess.
(05:47):
The Astros can't stay healthy yet. The Cincinnati Reds have
the longest winning streak, the Orioles are on fire, and
the d Backs are leading the National League West. Baseball's
completely upside down. Big markets and big stars all got
swept this weekend.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Where Colin was right.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Steve Sarkesian at Texas, Lincoln Riley at USC, two of
my favorite coaches, had massive recruiting weekends. Two glamour programs
have also been able to secure their best players. The
only people leaving these programs in the transfer portals are
players who would have lost snaps. This is the hottest
(06:28):
USC has been in terms of recruiting since Pete Carroll
and Sark had a massive weekend. He had a top
three class in February. He's followed it up with excellent weekends.
Never forget these are the two glamour programs in the country.
When they played for a national championship, the rating was
a twenty two that is thirty to forty percent higher
(06:52):
than what the current national championships get with SEC powers.
So both sark and Lincoln Riley, in an off offensive
pivoting sport, are crushing it. Where Colin was right, where
Colin was wrong, plenty of both. And with that, as
you know, I only have dinner with two people. My wife,
(07:13):
an NBA insider, Rick Buker Bukes is on the show
on a Monday Baby covering the NBA since the nineties.
They'll be on speak at four thirty Eastern on FS one.
So it's funny.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
I'm sitting flying back, got up this morning and.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Heading to the airport Bradley Beal with the Suns, and
I was like, who you know? I hear rumors all
the time. Why did it happened so quickly before the draft?
Speaker 7 (07:39):
Well, because there was competition for him. Miami was interested.
And it's the same as with the Kevin Durant deal.
Like matt Isshbiad buys the team in the next minute,
he's making the deal for Kevin Durant. He has moved fast,
and he hasn't cared necessarily what the price is. But
in this case, prices fairly low. So what I don't get, though,
(08:03):
is I don't get the fit. You were already top
heavy and it didn't work with Chris Paul, Kevin Durant,
and Devin Booker. You were hurt by your bench, you
were hurt by your lack of defense. So now adding
Bradley Beale and moving two more players out in Chris
Paul and Landry Shammitt, you're not solving any of your problems.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
So here's what I think they're going to do. I
think they're gonna move DeAndre eight for sure.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
They have to. Yeah, and they're gonna get defenders and
a bench player.
Speaker 7 (08:32):
Okay, but how many, like how many can you get if.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
You told me they brought in two six seven guys
who can defend? I'm good with a team really well.
Who led the NBA and bench scoring? The Pacers, Spurs,
and Pistons.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Okay, you know who was bad at it?
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and Denver was average. I can't make
Landry Shammitt more talented, right, I can cobble together through
the buyout market, the draft, free agency, trade deadline. I
can cobble together a competent bench if you give me
these three guys. I don't need a great Denver didn't
have a great bench. Miami's bench didn't do anything. Denver's
(09:06):
was fifth. You know I had the best bench in
the playoffs. Sacramento couldn't win a series.
Speaker 7 (09:11):
Okay, what are you basing best bench on?
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I'm on bench scoring. So Sacramento's bench scoring in the
playoffs was remarkable. They couldn't be the old Warriors.
Speaker 7 (09:19):
There's a lot more that you get out of your
bench and your other guys than just scoring, especially if
you were if you're top heavy, like to me, finding
those three and D guys and defensive guys like those those.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Are gold, right Now, that's why you're trade eight and
for Okay, but.
Speaker 7 (09:38):
You need to show me who you're gonna get and
then okay, so you get two really good wing defenders.
Now you're incredibly small, well like, and you can't. You
can't play big and small. That was that was the
beauty of of of Denver is they could play big,
but they could also play small and fast. And as
we've seen this, this idea that you need a big
(10:00):
three that top heavy works is a myth. I'm not
sure it ever worked, even going back to the Boston
Celtics teams. That's where it started with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett,
Ray Allen when those came together. But if you looked
at the rest of that team, with PJ. Brown and
(10:21):
Sam Cassell and James Posey and Eddie House. Even Leam
Poe played fourteen minutes a game, he gave you eight
points and four rebounds. Depth has always been an important element.
And then the other part is how do those pieces
fit together. In the case of Kg, Paul and Ray.
(10:41):
They worked because they all had a different strength and
they supported each other. Here, I've got three largely perimeter scorers,
And who's your playmaker, who's your distributor? Because you don't
need defenders, Well, do you need a point guard? Now?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Do you do?
Speaker 1 (10:58):
My takeaway as b Ok be at times your lead dog. Also,
I think bookers are more dynamic Jamal Murray. Jamal Murray
can get clogged up and trapped. It's hard to trap Booker.
You can give Booker the ball and he can get
you into the offense.
Speaker 7 (11:12):
Booker and what he showed after Chris Paul got hurt,
He's pretty good. He showed me more than I've ever seen.
They also have cam but campaign. He's not really a
get you into things. So and he's got five guys
on the roster right now. They got five signed guys.
They're gonna have to sign seven or eight guys to
(11:32):
all minimum contracts. Colin, you work some amazing magic, like
you know this J Mack, Like behind the scenes, he's
pulling all kinds of strings. I go into wardrobe or
I go into makeup, and they're like, yeah, Colin doesn't
think the tone is quite right, you need a different
pigment on your Like he's pulling all kinds of strings.
But even you, even you signing all minimums, and you've
(11:57):
got to build a team that's going to be better
than the Denver Nuggets, Well what time out?
Speaker 3 (12:00):
First of all, that's the standard right now.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
So if my team's not as good as Denver, it's
like saying you're not making as much money as Amazon.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Okay, it's not the worst criticism. Okay, does it put.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Them old Warriors, old Lakers, beat up old Clippers, Sacramentos
young and interesting but not quite there? It does put
them into me in a rarefied air. Okay, I'll give
you an example. So we've been talking about how perfect
I mean if I have to hear about the Celtics,
but Nick Wright's been on this.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
So who facilitates their offense? They don't really have one.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Marcus Smart's a defensive guy, Jalen Brown's a wing, so
is Tatum.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
They don't have one.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Now they kind of make it work because they're in
their prime. I think this team is so profound as
an offensive piece. And they let's go back to Denver
without this bench. They beat him twice. Chris Paul got hurt.
They were the one team that Denver. They made Denver
sweat in multiple games. So now I've got three elite scorers.
(12:56):
You move eight and if it was me just I
would say get me two six, seven and a half
defensive players, solid NBA guns, three stars.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
I like the coach. I think you're top two in
the West.
Speaker 7 (13:09):
So you really like this move and these suns.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
I am not into the star label. My theory on
you and I talked about this over salmon.
Speaker 7 (13:19):
Yes, at the grotto, salmon asparagus at the chateau. I
think chateau is a little more appropriate. So another is water.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
It's not three stars, it's three impactful players. Aaron Gordon
was as good as Denver's bench was when he got
hurt in Game five against Miami.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Yeah, you're like, he.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Didn't even score. They have a hole in their team.
These playoffs, you get down to the finals, do you
have three dudes on the floor that can change the outcome?
Speaker 3 (13:47):
That's what they give.
Speaker 7 (13:48):
Me, but they give it to you in the same
vein like Aaron Gordon could change the game by the
way he defended Jimmy Butler and the way that he
rebounded and the way that he could pound gave Vincent
if you got to switch on him. They're to me,
they're too duplicative, they're too much jump shooting to there's
(14:11):
just not enough variation in variety for this to work
to the level. And by the way, they've given away
all of their assets.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Yeah, but what are they second round picks?
Speaker 7 (14:21):
No, but I mean they don't have any first they
gave up first round picks, and the Kevin Durant deal
they gave their young talents.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
See that this is a This is a theory that
I agree with Phoenix. So in the NFL, when you
pay mahomes, you have to hit on fifth, sixth, seventh
round guys, Kansas City did yes. In the NBA, the
kids that come into the league are not close already
outside of Scoot Wemba Yama by the thirteenth pick.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Guys not ready to play fair fair.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
So their timeline in Golden State is steph. Yeah, their
time line in La is Lebron, their time line is
Kevin Durant.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Okay, guys that can play now.
Speaker 7 (15:03):
Fair fair, But what's the shelf life on Kevin Durant
right now?
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Two great years?
Speaker 7 (15:09):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (15:10):
And then what don't worry about it. When it happened.
It's Phoenix, it's a Winter League.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
Guys like to play the so good. Oh, I think
yes in this case. In this case, I think you're crazy.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
I think I think you think I don't care.
Speaker 7 (15:27):
I don't care. Just push all my chips to the
middle of the table.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
I'm not a big Boston example, so Boston is going
to be very reluctant to make a move on Brown,
Tatum and Smart. And my takeaway is if Miami lands name,
you're not as good as Denver. You're not as good
as Miami. So now you're yippie. You're not making any
Your future is terrific. This is make moves no. But
(15:51):
you can do both.
Speaker 7 (15:52):
You can build a current team and protect yourself for
the future. And by the way, I know this is
you off the rails because we had a conversation about
business and how when you start running a business you
suddenly realize, oh man, I can't just fly by the
seat of my pants. I can't just I can't just
(16:14):
pay everybody. I can't just go get like every star
that catches my eye.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
This isn't flying by the seat of your pants. It's
going from Chris Paul who can't finish a playoff series,
to a younger, better scoring option who doesn't need the
ball to score.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
I'm not arguing with making the deal for Bradley Beal.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Would you have made the deal? They gave away nothing?
Speaker 7 (16:38):
Yeah, no, no, no fair And they were going to
wave or they were saying they're gonna wave Chris Paul anyway,
and they didn't. They really didn't give anything up to
get Bradley Beal. I'm not mad at the deal. I'm
mad at the idea that Bradley Beal now makes them
considerably better or more of a threat to win a
(17:01):
championship than they were. I just I think he makes
them better. I think he makes them a better regular
season team. I thought to make them a bigger attraction.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Couldn't I argue this last year? What they were, yeah,
is a center who didn't like his coach and a
two old point guard and two wings scorers. Now there
are three agreeable wing scorers. That sounds better to miss
it is better and then just go trade eighton and
get a couple of six to seven guys that can defend.
(17:30):
Feels like a good team to me.
Speaker 7 (17:32):
It is a good team. It's a good team. Let's
just not put him in the championship conversation.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
There's not many in that. Did you have Miami in
that this year because they were close? No?
Speaker 7 (17:44):
No, I didn't know, but you can see why Miami
ended up getting there. I don't know that I would
put the Phoenix Suns in the top five teams in
the league, right WHOA, Yeah, I don't think I'm putting them.
I'm not putting them ahead of Boston. I don't And
and just let's go let's go West, Let's.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Go get KD. Booker and Beale. None of those guys
have ever been afraid to take the shot. I'm not
sure Jason Tatum wants.
Speaker 7 (18:13):
Who's gonna get them the ball they will get. I
mean they have the same issue as Boston. I make
that better high end talent, uh, but not good as
good defensively? Okay, on defense, I heard all and and
not as good a bench I got six a year bench.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
You're selling the house based on the garage. It's not
selling the house. Bro The kitchen is, the yard is,
the fire pit.
Speaker 7 (18:43):
Is okay, but I have to have a garage. If
I don't have, no, if I got to park the
car in the living room. It takes the value of
the car down. When when it snows ar rains, it
takes down the value of the cars or the house significant.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
All right, I had something else here. Oh oh, so.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Draymond declining his player option, meaning it's not a big deal.
They're going to sign him at a bigger number.
Speaker 7 (19:08):
Yeah, he wants more years and.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
He got left a year.
Speaker 7 (19:14):
Uh yeah, yeah, if he opted in, I think it
was forty close to forty million something like that for
one year. They'll they'll figure it out where he gets
two years for twenty five or thirty depending on how
does it generous they want to.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Be Mike Dunlavy, Now the GM does it affect the
Clay Thompson contract.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Got to pay him more per year?
Speaker 7 (19:35):
Yeah, that's going to be a sticky one based on
the last things we heard from Clay who thought that
he should get a max extension. He's not worth a
max extension. They can't afford it under the new CBA.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Now, yeah, and he has a year left. Why do
I have to pay him? Why can't I just play
Clay for a year?
Speaker 7 (19:50):
You could do that?
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Why wouldn't I You.
Speaker 7 (19:53):
Very well could should do that. It's just a matter
of this is where it gets tricky with Mike coming
in and why they had to have somebody from the inside,
because these guys have come up together, like the chemistry
and there they are very tight knit and so you know,
(20:14):
other guys don't count other guys' money, but like Draymond
and Steph are going to have their ears to the
door in terms of how they're handling Clay. It affects
everybody on that team.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Let me let me ask this, is there a chance
they'd move off Jordan Poole to get size. I thought
Moses Moody had a very very interesting playoff.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I think yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
I found myself watching the Warriors and asking Steve Kerr
get Moses Moody in the game?
Speaker 3 (20:43):
Would they move Pool for size?
Speaker 7 (20:46):
I believe that they would. And then and they would
package Pool with Kaminga and they would have to do that.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
And get eighteen points.
Speaker 7 (20:56):
Karl Anthony Towns like yeah, somebody somebody said. I was
talking to some scouts and executives over the weekend and
one of them said, Jordan Pools and Tyler Herroes maybe
the two worst contracts in the league because of the
size of them and because of the uncertainty of what
they can do for the rest. I know you're a
Jordan Poole.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
No, no, no, no, Alcolyte, but no not. Tyler can be
immature and Jordan can be immature. Yeah, I mean Tyler
went sideways for a year in Miami. So my takeaway is, yes,
they're overpaid. They get their own shot, and they scored
over twenty a night. They hard to find in the league.
Speaker 7 (21:31):
There is there is a talent there for sure. Is
it worth how much you're paying them is the question?
And can they mature and become better.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
That most people do over time?
Speaker 7 (21:42):
That is very true, probably one of the exceptions.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
J McK you look like you're you want to ask
a question.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
Championship.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
First of all, is this idea that the Phoenix Suns
are not a top five team in the league heading
into the playoffs?
Speaker 7 (21:58):
This idea they have one of that.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
I think they were the second or third best favorite
to win the title, and now you're saying they're not
top five after at eighth an All NBA.
Speaker 7 (22:06):
Guart Do we need to go back to what the
odds were going in the playoffs this year and who
was favored, and where the Lakers were and the Warriors,
and conversely, where the Miami Heat were or even the
Denver Nuggets.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Okay, wouldn't you say the Suns past the Lakers? With
this Bradley Beal deal.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
I could make an argument that the Lakers don't have
a single player that can dependably hit a three pointer
as well as Booker kd Orbiel. Fact, the three best
shooters in the series would all be Phoenix Suns. I
would take that any day. Also, Booker's got another six
years in his prime.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Who pushed Denver harder than anyone in this postseason?
Speaker 3 (22:44):
I thought it was Phoenix.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
No, there's only one answer. It's only Phoenix. Nobody else
pushed it.
Speaker 7 (22:49):
Don't tell me. In the words of the great Michael Malone,
they didn't bring their defense to Phoenix, and Phoenix took
advantage it.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
Denver was eighteenth in the league in defense this year.
They took advantage of a weak Miami offense in the
finals that had a bunch of undraft to die.
Speaker 7 (23:01):
Grading the Denver rug, I'm not selling that.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Gave you facts.
Speaker 7 (23:05):
It sounds it sounds like you're selling the You're making.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
It sound like I still think Denver's the favorite. But
my takeaway is just say it out loud. If I
said to you, I can make like when I'm not
saying they're the heatles.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
But Wade and Lebron never fit.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
They had no size and nobody like Mario Chalmers and
they ran to the finals four straight years. Fit can
be overrated. If I have talent, you give me. I mean,
I've been in the TV business for a long time.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Give me talent.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
I'll make Barkley and Kenny Smith and Ernie and Shack,
whether their person not.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
It'll work.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
I'll just make it work.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Who would have thought Howie Long and Bradshaw one guy's
the straight man.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
One guy they make it. People, just make it work.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
Colin, what about Bradley Beal going from the number one
option in Washington, number one, to now the number three
guy in Phoenix where there's like no pressure on him
to deliver? Dude, get open cut to the back like
same as Aaron Gordon and wigs And we've talked about
for weeks. Going from being a top five pick and
all the pressure on you to carry the franchise to
being like an accessory.
Speaker 7 (24:07):
Oh yeah, he's foy. Did he carry that franchise too.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
I mean, the only average thirty a game in the
last series.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
Forty seven didn't go to the playoffs the last two years.
Good thank goodness they took that off. He must be
worn out carrying that team.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
Okay, to the lottery. You're Chris Paul?
Speaker 7 (24:24):
What what you guys just you just suggested that building
an NBA team is like building a TV show.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
It is.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
It is not.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
It's a lot of egos, a lot of egos that
don't want to play defense that you have to harness
the head in the right direction, and everybody wants to
be the leading scorer. The same damn business. It is
the same business. That's good, Okay, Chris Paul Tomorrow, Yes,
you're his agent. Where would you Clippers?
Speaker 3 (24:52):
Lakers? Where would you tell him to go?
Speaker 5 (24:54):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (24:55):
That's that's tough. That's tough, largely because Lakers fans think
that I don't want anybody to go.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
To the Lakers. What are the Clippers need go?
Speaker 7 (25:02):
I would say Clippers. He's exactly what they need of
Chris Paul. You need somebody who's going to operate. And
it's not so much that I just the part with
the Lakers is you still need the ball in Lebron's hands.
If you put it into Chris Paul's hands, it's now
a d doesn't have it, Lebron doesn't have it. Like
there's so many pieces with the Clippers. I'm better off
(25:24):
when Chris Paul is making the decisions. So I would
say the.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Clippers, Austin Reeves is at his best, Yes, creating guy act.
You take the ball out of his hands. Lebron had
a horrible shooting year. Lebron's best getting to the basket.
You would take Austin and Lebron's straints away. And if
you have an option in life to work for a company,
I tell my kid, this, go where you think you're
needed most. Like Chris, I've been watching for three years.
(25:51):
I've been watching the Clippers. I'm like Kawhi Leonard in
his prime, never had big assists.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
Best sticks in his hands. He's not a great passer,
he's not no.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
All right, because it's pretty good performance by.
Speaker 7 (26:03):
You, Oh, thank you, thank you. But I will bring
in some six to seven guys to replace me. Then
we're good.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
If I told you tomorrow they trade Ayighton, good first
of all. But let's just play this game. Yeah, So
where I think Ayighton's a good player. His problem is
he's not a great defender, rebounder, or score. He's just
a really good athlete runs the floor. Where in the NBA,
give me a team that could use Ayton and let
me see what they have as wing players who needs
(26:32):
size in the league.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Go ahead, how's this one?
Speaker 8 (26:34):
Right?
Speaker 4 (26:35):
So Miles Turner and whoever you want on the Indiana bench,
TJ McConnell or some random guy, so that the salaries matchup.
That's two guys who can play. And I mean, hell,
Miles Turner might be better than DeAndre Aiden, it's not
it's not a big gap.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
How about that?
Speaker 4 (26:49):
Would you do that?
Speaker 3 (26:50):
How about that?
Speaker 4 (26:51):
I don't know if Indiana does.
Speaker 7 (26:52):
That, I would sure I would do. I mean Indiana
signed that made the offer sheet, so they've got interest there.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
So yeah, my Turner.
Speaker 7 (27:00):
Okay, So let's say they get Myles Phoenix gets Miles
Turner and and I don't even give you buddy heel.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
No, they're not doing they don't need they don't need
any body here.
Speaker 8 (27:11):
I take it.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
This is my large chess. I am saying I will
give you buddy heel. I will go so high as
to give you Buddy Heal. You have Buddy Heel, Myles Turner,
uh Kate h k d Bo Booker and Beal. And
now I got to find seven other players. You don't
think I was supposed to say six.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
Okay, that team right there can absolutely make the fun
about Jack Landale.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
It sounds like he's he wasn't bad in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
Jock Landale, don't know.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
Colin Jock Landale the ring chaser idea like how many
guys are gonna want a ring chase living in Phoenix
and say, yeah, I'll take the minimum.
Speaker 7 (27:48):
I've made a lot of money.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
I don't mind coming off the bench to help out
whoever find the guys. I haven't looked at everything Londale,
Jack and Jock Landale played in the you know what?
Speaker 7 (27:56):
And Bill, I don't think you guys need me for
this conversation anymore. Guy's pretty much is supporting each other. God,
I love NBA trade, Oh thank you NBA. It's the
off season. And then you know what, and we're gonna
get a couple more. Now we got we still got
the Damian Lillard question to answer.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Is I got a five?
Speaker 7 (28:14):
I got a feeling he's going to be on the
move to.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Yeah, we know where he's going.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Yeah, Milwaukee or Miami, both good, I would I would guess.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
By the way, do you believe that the Bucks were
strongly going after Bradley Beale?
Speaker 7 (28:29):
They they they would love to switch out DRIs Middleton. Middleton,
he's got an opportunity to opt out of his deal,
and I think that they would love to move him
and get younger and somebody more dependable.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
I think they got the best of Chris Middleton. I
think it's time.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
So do you make a hard, hard press for Damian Lillard?
Speaker 3 (28:48):
I would love Damian.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Milwaukee's like Portland, nice northern climate. My daughter was there
like two weeks ago. She's like, this place is cool.
You know what wittle town.
Speaker 7 (28:55):
So the Bucks facility is right on the back side
of the lake. Yeah, actually a beautiful It sneaks up
on you. It's a beautiful area in the summer.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
No summer fall. Milwaukee's gorgeous.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
What about the winter shrof?
Speaker 7 (29:10):
Oh you're playing games, you're on the road.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
That's right, You're in Miami in La Manhattan Beach. Guy
loves the dump on other cities.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Not every place is eighty one, Not every place has
Adel's right in Wisconsin, Dell.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
He thought it was a mall. We take a break
as the Herd.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Eastern not am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (29:37):
J Mack with the News.
Speaker 8 (29:41):
Turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
This is the Herd Line news.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
Kind of love that the World Cup. You's got you
all in on soccer because it was a monster soccer weekend.
US destroys Mexico three nothing Thursday, and last night they
defeated Canada to zero to win the Nations League. This
is their third straight title in CAF competitions, following the
Nation's League and Gold Cup wins in twenty twenty one.
Christian Polisk said the victory was another step in the
(30:07):
right direction as they gear up for the World Cup
in twenty twenty six. Colin a lot to be excited
about if you're a USA soccer fan. Well, and just
one other point you alluded to. They got two red
cards against Mexico. Desk, who I think is the best
wing back. He was out and then McKinney was out.
He was one of their better central playmakers. Both were
out and the replacements come in and you don't miss
(30:29):
a beat. That is enormous for the death.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Listen three words, trust your eyes. If you are a
soccer fan, this is It's not even close. This is
easily our fastest, most skilled, most athletic, twitchiest group. They're
the best, most skillful ball on foot. They you know,
(30:51):
I was saying this, it's hard to coach in soccer
because it's like basketball, where you have to allow for
the artist to create, but the field is so large.
How much space do you get like Reina is you
can see it's a playmaker, and so it's not an
easy coach. It's constantly running through coaches that you have
(31:13):
a construct of how to play, but you have to
let great players play. You have so much space to
beat defenders. And when you watch this American team, the
challenge going forward to us will be how much space
do we let our artists create, because for the first.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
Time in my life, we have them.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
We don't have to play like the Italian style, which
is you know, rarely aggressive, one nothing, that's your win.
We've always been good on the defensive end. We've been
able to stay close to good teams.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
We can now.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
I believe outskill outscore some really high end countries.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
This team is just trust your eyes. We have real players.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
I do have to ask, so Burhol's coming back as coach,
which we allude to. His style, as you said, is
defensive heavy at the World Cup, you know, playing for
the ties. But is that because he misjudged the offensive
talent perhaps he missed judge Na or have the players
grown so much in the last six months that now
they've gotten an offensive look to them.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
In an identity, where do professional athletes improve the most,
it's usually twenty one to twenty six, and then you
get into your prime years twenty six to thirty, right,
you don't see Michael Jordan didn't make massive improvements.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
Where Jordan exploded was first.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
Year in the league, fourth year in the league, or
like last year at Carolina, third year in the NBA,
and then it was all about being able to play
with others. By Michael's fifty year in the league, could
he play with Pippen? Could he play with others? It's
not like he got more athletic. So most of our
roster is in the still improving stage in that kind
of twenty one to twenty four year old stage. That's
(32:58):
why they make big leads. I mean, this team looks
better than the World Cup how many months ago, way
that yet significantly better because it's like anybody who's had kids,
you're just trying to get them to twenty five, keep
them out of jail.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
You're like twenty five.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Well at that point they have they make more mistakes,
they have more growth, they have more to learn. They're
exploding and changing, and I think we're watching our team
explode in front of us.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
This talent. They're all getting better at the same time.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
So very granular point. But the Burholter haters and they're
out there on social media. Yeah, so one thing to
give them a little props for At the World Cup,
do you remember Polistic took a lot of the corner
kicks and they just fell flat, were nothing off the
set pieces. The interim coach had Raina taking the corner
kicks and they we got a header goal, Like we
had opportunities. Like it was like, how did Burholter not
(33:48):
see that and have Reina in that role? And the
new guy puts him in there. It's there's a lot
happening and we should add in the last hour Mexico
fired their coach who've been on the job for four
and a half months. Largely dude, the three nothing ass
kicking we gave them on Thursday, right, that's stunning. The
US doesn't get coaches fired.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Okay, America for several years was not as talented as Mexico,
and the last three times we played them, we're more talented.
Watching that game Thursday, that match wasn't close. It was
the Chiefs and the Jaguars. It was like, oh, there's
a big gap, you know. And watching us in Canada
it was like yesterday it was two nothing, boom boom,
(34:29):
and then it's home.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
Free, like could have been a bloodbath yesterday.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
I got to tell you something I think there, I
just am.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
I'm amazed at how explosive we are.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Yeah, we look awesome. At a side note, the new
the interim Mexico coach was our coach at Nakasa in
twenty twenty two. I know him. Well, I'll save that
for my podcast. I know you don't really care, all right. Anyway,
moving on to the next story. Bradley Beal. He's finally
a contender now with the Sons joining KD and Devin Booker.
On the Big Three. And Chandler Parsons, who I think
was a guest on this show last month, think Bill
(35:00):
makes the team, makes the Suns the team to watch.
Speaker 9 (35:04):
He is an unselfish player. He wants to win now.
At this point, he's been losing for his entire career
in Washington. He's never had another co star, let alone
two co stars like this, where he's literally the third option.
There's no just magic philosophy on how to stop this.
And what I like about these three guys they all
try to defend, and they all have potential to defend.
(35:24):
So it's not like we're just talking about this offensive juggernaut. Yeah,
you're looking at the best trio going into next season
and it's not even close.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Well, think about this, when you put Harden, Kyrie, and
Durant together, the problem was Kyrie and Harden have no
interest defending. Katy's always been a willing defender, and Chandler's right,
these are unselfish guys who are willing to defend. By
the way Jokich is willing to defend, it's not great
at it. Curry's willing to defend. So I and I
(35:53):
also think I said this with Bucker.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Give me talent, I'll make it work.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
But what I local is a good We like him
just won a championship in the bubble, so when he
got fired, nobody thought he deserved to be fired. In
l At that was a that was not a Frank
Vogel issue. That's why I got a job so quickly,
in a good job. The bottom line here is if
you give me talent, it's my job to figure out
how to make it work. What I can't overcome is
untalented players.
Speaker 3 (36:18):
I got three A listers.
Speaker 4 (36:20):
By the way, in when Beal had Russell Westbrook, who
you know, a good player, But when he was alongside
Russell Westbrook, he averaged thirty a game and was an
All NBA player. So we both agree, Booker and KD
are vastly better than Russell Westbrook. Now you're putting Bill
with two elite players. People are caught up on what
Bill was on a crappy Washington deep. I don't know
how they can't see past that. I'm surprised Buker felt
(36:41):
for you.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
I b real bial's that good?
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Like Hellerton. Did the Miami Heatles fit not really?
Speaker 1 (36:48):
They had no size Lebron and d Wade have kind
of the same game, and they didn't like their point guard.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
They just had talent.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Yeah, they made Bosh a perimeter player, like it was weird.
They just had more. They had more players than everybody.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
Remember when Durant would come out in that Nugget series,
You're like, Oh, can they survive the Durant less minutes
against the Nuggets? They only have Devin Booker. Now that's
not gonna be an issue. You're gonna have Bial and
Booker or Bial and KD.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
It's good.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
They're gonna be.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
They're gonna move DeAndre Ayton, and they're gonna get some
nice pieces. My guess is they'll get a classic point
guard and a wing that can defend. Or like, I
like your idea of a Miles Turner and another If
I got Buddy Healed in that deal, I'd turn and
move him, probably because you have enough scores. I'd move
him for a defensive piece. I mean, I think they're
not done. You have a lot of options in the
(37:33):
NBA free agency, draft, buy out, market, trade deadline. There's
a lot of ways to get better for a good
GM over the next seven months. There's a lot of time.
Speaker 8 (37:42):
All right.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
Finally NFL Pittsburgh Steelers, they're looking to make the big
jump to the playoffs. You were coming around on them
last week. Well, but Kenny Pickett is there. QB veteran
cornerback Patrick Peterson first year in Pittsburgh. He thinks Pickett
holds the key to the team's success.
Speaker 8 (37:58):
We have all the pieces that we need on defense.
We know defense win championships.
Speaker 10 (38:02):
Talent across the board on the office side of the ball,
I believe the front office did a great job of
getting what we needed in the draft. And you added
Alan Robinson, you got Deontay Johnson, you got George Pickens,
you got Niji.
Speaker 8 (38:15):
You know. Now we're all want to come down to
how well Cannan can play and can he put the
ball where it needs to go. I believe he is
a guy that we can rely on, a guy that
who we can count on now is going to all
fall on him if he can go out there and
show us what he's capable of.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
Bil Listen, the other thing is they have a great
tight end, excellent wide receivers, tremendous defense. We talked about
this last week because there's so much flash in the
AFC Burrow Mahomes Allen. We didn't pay a lot of
attention to Pittsburgh at the end of last year. People
the last like six opponents scored seventeen on average game.
(38:54):
This defense was unbelievable late and people also may have
missed that Picking had I think to come from behind
wins late. He did, so he was a completely different
player week seven to week sixteen.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Like Pickett again, he had a lot of snaps in college.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
If you didn't watch the Steelers late because you were
watching all the other firework shows.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
Pittsburgh was a really testy team.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Light you remember that game against Miami was primetime game.
I don't know if a Sunday or Monday. But Pickett
didn't play poorly and like that was a big spot
primetime game. This is a guy who I think was
like a five year college guy. I remember a pit
So he's not like some just second year. Do you
think he's like close to twenty six years old, twybe
twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
He's one of the class. He kind of is a
be at everything. He can move, but he's not a burner.
He can throw, but he doesn't have a huge arm.
He's just I mean like he's big, but not huge.
He's just one of those guys that with a lot
of college experience, he can make all the throws, like
Trubisky can't make half the throws. He's just good enough
at everything. And if you surround him with a great defense,
(39:57):
you won a lot of games.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Yeah, I'm with you, Jamcklenews.
