for listening to the Herd podcast. Here we go. It's

(00:23):
hour two. It's a Monday. The first hour flew by.
If you missed it, I said nice stuff about brock Purty,
So you know we're taking swings here in the Herd
on a Monday. Matt Hasselbeck is around the corner. Dion
Dawkins today, tonight's Bears Vikings. We're going to get into

(00:45):
that last hour. I like Minnesota tonight without further ado.
We do it every week at this time. Colin right,
Colin wrong?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Where Colin was right?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs regression is clear. I had
said last week, I'd pro take the Chargers. The O
line issues, the run game, where is it? The wide
receiver corps was thin going into the game. They couldn't
get out of their own way. Literally, they're the only
winless team in their division. I thought Mahomes was amazing,
But when you watch the Ravens or the Packers or

(01:17):
the Eagles roster, it's thin. And I said, you can't
keep winning every one score game, even if you have
Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert against Steve
Spagnola did whatever he wanted to with kind of a
me mid.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Receiving corps where Colin was raw.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Listen, he's a statue at this point and got sacked
four times. But I thought Aaron Rodgers was really strong
in the opener. To his credit, he has said I
am here for leadership and distribution and elevating others, so
he knows what he is. Seven of nine in the
fourth quarter with a couple of touchdowns, and he took shots.
He took a shot Joe Burrow and him took shots

(01:58):
this weekend of nine two touchdowns. And again I don't
love Pittsburgh's offensive line. They don't they don't run the
ball consistently. So I thought Aaron on the road against
Aaron Glenn's defense, I thought it.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Was impressive where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
I said it after the Hall of Fame game, Detroit
does not look right. You can't replace two elite coordinators
with in house guys and think I'll just be the same.
It's not the same two point one yards per carry.
They're rebuilding the interior line. Ben Johnson was the sharpest
coordinator in the game for a couple of years. You

(02:37):
can't just go, well, we got a guy in house
that can replace him. You can't do that. Their passing
game coordinator left to the Jets, and Justin Fields looked
pretty good, So I think you can take some things
even in the preseason. The Lions will not be as
well coached a football team where Colin was wronged. The

(02:58):
Dallas Cowboys lost, but I thought Brian Schottenheimer had them
buttoned up. I thought they were good situationally and the
first half clock management. They had very few penalties. I
thought they played even keel football with good emotion, not
wild emotion. Dak terrific. They found run lanes. They were
a drop pass by Ceedee Lamb from winning this football

(03:19):
game in Philadelphia. The clock management was strong, they didn't
have penalties. I had my issues with Brian Schottenneimer. There's
no way you could come out of that game, whether
you love the Cowboys or hate him, and not be impressed.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
I was wrong where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Well, college football's bumpy for Bill Belichick. He won't let
the Patriots scout on scouts on the Carolina campus, which
doesn't make sense. You're only hurting the players. He just
keeps alienating himself from the NFL. Bill Bill's old school.
He's very provincial. It's about loyalty to Bill. And you know,
if you're not loyal to me, you're a bad guy.

(03:58):
You're against us. That must be exhausting to have that personality.
But I said, coming into college, he's not a great
drafter of college kids. Why is he going to be
a great recruiter of high school kids? He watches even
less of that. So I was surprised they lost the
way they did, But I'm not surprised he's having struggles.
Where Colin was wrong. What a done by New England.

(04:22):
Gino Smith was spinning it, the Mike Rables offense and
Josh McDaniels. It was cautious, it was slow, it was deliberate.
Now I will say, with all the free agents and
all the rookies playing, they've got a whole new cast
on this roster.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
So they got so.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Many new pieces and starters don't play a lot in
the preseason. I do think this will be about as
bad as they play. But Drake may cautious, not a
lot of juice. I was surprised, how bad, how poor,
how slow that looked.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Where Colin was right.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Well, Miami Dolphins were cooked. I said, two years yars ago,
Mike McDaniel's clever. He can be funny. I think he's
a great offensive mind. But as the leader of men now,
the Colts are better than people think. Colts have a
good roster, but you can't have that. You can't have
Daniel Jones going seven for seven on drives. That defense

(05:16):
did not come to play. After the game, there were
some concerning quotes from defensive players. Head coach is a CEO,
it's not just a play caller. I don't doubt Mike
McDaniel is a great play caller and will get a
great oc job. But I also don't love the roster.
When you watch those two teams play, Colts had way

(05:38):
more good players and it wasn't particularly close. Where Colin
was right, I said, keep your eye on Tampa rookie
receiver in Mecca Abuka two touchdowns, great route runner, he
has a chance to be the rookie of the year.
Every scout, every executive in the league I talked to
if I said who will surprise people in the first round,
it was the Ohio State receiver. He got overshadowed because

(06:02):
Ohio State is wide receiver university and they have so
many amazing stars. This kid, you are looking at a
guy if he stays healthy. I mean he's a pro
route running hands, discipline, personality in Mecca Buca, I mean,
Baker Mayfield has himself today as a rookie game one,

(06:23):
a star. Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong, Well,
he engineered six playoff appearances with the Seahawks. Matt Hasselbeck
eighteen years is now joining US Live.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Yeah, you could add my favorite part of this show
is where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong. I
love it. I love I love when you double down
when you were right, and I kind of like when
you admit when you were wrong.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
It's fun. I enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Well, thank you, and I was wrong plenty. I'm going
to get Let's just get to last night. And I
said before when Baltimore wins, if I didn't see the game,
I would suspect Lamar played great, but when Buffalo wins
a wild game, I would suspect Josh Allen had to
be otherworldly because I think the Ravens have a better
roster and more routes to win. I think they're so

(07:08):
dependent on Josh Allen. But as somebody who got a
team to a super Bowl, when you watch him doing
what he does, what the how do you explain Josh
Allen if I'd never seen him play.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Awesome?

Speaker 3 (07:21):
I mean that game was incredible, Listen. I was watching
it last night. I'm like, I met, Wow, this is
an impressive win by Baltimore.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
It's amazing. But then in the back of my head,
I'm like, this means.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
That Josh Allen can just go cut it loose, put
a cape on, and just play Superman. And that's really
what he did. I mean, like it was just it
was absolutely incredible. And you know it's so boring to say, like, oh, turnovers,
third down, fourth down conversion, but like that was the story.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
Of the game.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if we see another epic
matchup against these two teams. And this is what I
would say, Like, you know, a lot of people were
talking about the fact that, well this, this might come
down to a home field advantage thing in the playoffs
at some point.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
I think there's some guys that are just built different.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Josh Allen's built different, Lamar Jackson's built different. I could
honestly see someone like Lamar Jackson being like, nah, no,
I'd rather go beat them at their place. I'd rather
go back to Buffalo and do it. Yeah, And he's
just got that mindset. I didn't have that mindset. I
would to play playoff games at home, but Lamar I
could just He's there's something special about both these two guys.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
And that's why I was such a great game to watch.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
It was I said this, and this was not a
knock on Aaron, But I didn't think the story of
the game was Aaron. I thought the story of the
game was the Jets have been looking for their next
quarterback star for years, and I know it's week one
that was easily the best I've seen justin fields play.
And Matt, this is something you've taught me and others
is that it wasn't first read stuff. You'd watch his head.

(08:47):
He would look left, he would look middle, he would
look right. Let it rip it and be a dart
like that was quarterback play. Also, you're going up against
Tomlin TJ. Watt like Pittsburgh plays defense. It was kind
of job Like. I was like, oh, is he gonna
be Baker and Gino and Sam?

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Like, I don't know. If you're the Jets.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
You wake up this morning, you got to feel pretty
good about that loss, don't you.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
I mean, you gotta be encouraged. I mean until the
night game. That was the game of the week. That
was an incredible game, you.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Know, I said, I sort of felt like.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
It was like a high school reunion. You're trying to
impress your old flame kind of a game like the
both quarterbacks were like, man, I got to be my best.
I got to show out my best for you know,
I'm the one that got away like that.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
That's what looked like for both quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
And I think people rallied around those both quarterbacks, and
I just thought the identity of what both teams are
trying to beat this year showed up.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
I thought justin Fields was I think he was good,
not great, but like I think he can be great.
I really do.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
And and you know, obviously he's a great runner, but
it's not about that. It's about it's about being a
passer first and then being a threat as a runner
on the flip side. Aaron Rodgers once was great with
his feet and moving around the pocket. That's no longer
his game unless you design it that way. So drop
back pass and then I go scramble, no wway, no okay,

(10:07):
but play action pass and that designed roll out move
the pocket. Aaron Rodgers is as good as there's ever
been with his eyes, his arm, and his head. I
thought that was really good for Pittsburgh.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
I know it's a Monday, it's week one, but I
watched Detroit's offense and people, coordinators matter, they matter. I
mean you I remember Philadelphia lost two great coordinators, hired
two new guys, and like by week ten you're like
they're bad. I watched the Lions. I'm sorry, but Ben

(10:38):
Johnson was missed, was he not?

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yeah? I mean he's a great coach.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
I think maybe one of the best, maybe the best
play caller.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
In the game for the last couple of years.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Just so creative, so confident, and so that's not a
knock on the new guys, but like it's gonna take
time to gel and there's a void there. You know,
you lose maybe your best offensive coach, you know, to
the Bears, and then you maybe lose one of your
other unsung hero offensive coaches to the Jets. That's not nothing,
and that happens. You see great coaches and great assistant coaches.

(11:08):
That happens in any organization. I think too, like someone
leaves and you realize, oh, oh wow, that person was
a lot more valuable to who we were than we realized.
But like you said, it's week one and they'll have
a time to gell. But I think the story of
that game was just how how amazing the Green Bay
Packers looked they came to play.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
You know, it's interesting Micah only played about forty forty
five percent of the snaps, And take me to your
experience in the NFL. There is something about adding a
great player to a team, and it just it felt
like the Packers' confidence, like their chest was out and
he played forty percent of the snaps. But I don't know,
it's almost like you go out drinking and you got

(11:48):
one of the high school wrestlers behind you just in
case you get a little softy. I thought the Packers
played it was so much confidence defensively.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah, it's like Kevin a great closer in baseball, Like, hey,
we got to close, you know, like if it's third
and long, we got it. You know, we're we're gonna
have a game changing play.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
We're gonna close the door. We're gonna we're gonna do it.
And I also think I told I told you on Friday.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
The unknown for an offense when you're growing, when you're
going up against a great pass rusher and you don't
know where he's gonna line up, You don't know what
down he's going to play on. You don't know like
our whole you know, before you drop any pass plays,
you drop your projection schemes, and a lot of times
you'll say, okay, we're going to slide the line to him,
Well what if he's not even on the field. Now,
what Like we're really gonna slide a bunch of people

(12:32):
to just some random dude.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
We don't even know who he is, So.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Like it's a it's I actually, as a quarterback, I
would rather know where he's gonna be and if he's
gonna be on the field every snap, that would be easier.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
So I sort of like I don't know. I feel
the pain of Detroit. I mean, shoot, they were planning
for this game.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
My Comparson's not even on the team, and then all
of a sudden he's on the team, and how much
is he even going to play?

Speaker 4 (12:55):
It was that that's not a great place to be
as an offense.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
I said, I have been a little underwhelmed in my
career with Brock perty I know he's talented, but I
think he's been a tad over hype because he's a
seventh round pick. I remember in college the knock on
him was he's small and his decision making, you know,
he lets it rip. And I thought yesterday Kittle, Trent Williams,
Jennings out o lines okay on the road Seattle. I

(13:23):
was kind of blown away with him. I don't care
about the picks. I watched him yesterday, Carrie a team
that's the most impressed I've ever been. I'm serious, I
was kind of I think that defense for Seattle is fast.
I thought party was great.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Your thoughts, yeah, hey, I can't stop smiling.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Finally I'm showing you the light with Brock Perdy, Christian McCaffrey.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
I mean, even it wasn't one hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
There were a lot of questions if he was even
going to play rock Perty's unfazed. I'm not sure if
he's ever lost in Seattle. I think it's really impressive
what he has done. He is otherworldly to me when
it comes to just like this cool calm collected when
the chaos is around. You know, in quarterbacks room, we
had this saying pretty much everywhere I was be comfortable,

(14:12):
get comfortable being uncomfortable, and like.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
That's what I see out of this guy. Listen. He
looks like a high school quarterback. I get it.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
But he can make all the throws. He's way more
mobile than people think. His teammates and coaches and general
manager absolutely love him.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
They think he's worth every penny.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
When I turn on the tape, I think he's really good.
I know people are looking for six five and a
half and all this other stuff and some big college,
but I think he's a really, really good player.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Okay, so listen.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
I do think a lot of the trouble in Miami
is they is the front office.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
I don't like their roster.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
I think they went to perimeter speed, didn't pay attention
to their offensive line. I think they're you know, they
move a lot and they're fun, but I don't I
don't want what's the meat in the sandwich for the
Dolphins or maybe the Colts and Daniel Jo are underrated.
That was embarrassing though, for a week one performance like
that that you don't see that a lot. I'll never

(15:06):
say quit, but there wasn't a lot of Jews. Who
do you credit? What do you make of the Dolphins
getting completely blown out at Indy?

Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah, well, I you know, I've heard you mentioned and
I think it's a great point. You know, there's something
to be being a great play caller, but it's not
doesn't necessarily mean you're a great head coach, you're a
great culture seter leader, all that kind of stuff. And
quite honestly, going back to last year, some of the
things that I've seen on the sidelines, some of the
things people say in the locker room, the Tyreek kill thing,
it's it's bad ball like it's I don't.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
I don't think it's a winning culture that way. I don't.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Now on the flip side, I think the Colts were
playing for something bigger than themselves. Jim Rsay passing away.
I've played for the Colts for three years. That is
a very family oriented kind of an organization, one heartbeat
kind of thing. It's started way back in the day
with Tony Dungee and those guys. But even when I
was an opponent, I remember when Chuck Pagano was going
through cancer, and as an opponent, I was looking over

(16:01):
to the sidelines and looking at that organization, and I
was saying, you know, there's something unique and special about
what they got going on there, top to bottom, and
it made me actually want to go sign with that organization.
I had respect for it. I think you still see
that Miami has been more fragmented than that. You know,
I'm not saying that's what they always were, but it's
a little bit more fragmented. And I do think that

(16:23):
that shows up on the field. You either pull together
or pull apart in times of adversity. That to me
looked like a team that did not pull together.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
Finally, if I suggested to you that the Raiders are
going to be vying for the playoffs, J Mack and
I have talked about this. Gino with time to throw
in a run game is very effective in his career.
His play action numbers are excellent Crosby. I like Jacoby Myers, Brockbauers,

(16:51):
Ashton Gent. I think Colton Miller in their old lines
better than average. I mean, they controlled that game. Gino
was a notch of Drake May.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
It's hard, Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll. I don't overreact, Matt.
But it was impressive, was it not.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
It's hard not to overreact, but I mean it was
a ten to seven game at halftime they were losing
to the Patriots, and you know, aside from one fourth
down conversion a big play. You know, I don't know
that they look that great, but sure, yeah, you play
sixty minutes. I was impressed.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
I'm impressed with Pete Carroll, the oldest head coach ever.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Maybe I don't know.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
He hates when I say that, so I say it more.
But he's impressive. He's really good.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Talked about culture and identity and how we talk in
the building and what we're gonna be.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Chip Kelly way underrated, Gino Smith underrated Max Crosby. Game
changer caused in interception with pressure. You know we mentioned
a closer before. That's why those pass rushers make that
much money. I don't know if they have enough firepower offensively,
but they might, you know, and knowing Pete Carroll like.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
They're gonna go get it. This is a game that
meant a.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
Lot to them, a lot of ties, Pete Carroll going
back to New England. Chip Kelly's from New Hampshire. Tom
Brady's kind of running football ops there.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
So we'll see.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
I think it's a long season, but this was a
game that meant a lot to a lot of people
in the Raiders organization.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
So huge win, A huge win on the road for
Las Vegas.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Great stuff.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
Matt Hasselbeck, What a fun weekend we had Bears Vikings tonight.
I don't know what I'm going to get in that
one matters.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
You know exactly what you're gonna get tonight, you know exactly.

Speaker 4 (18:26):
You get a whole lot of Brian Flores and it's
going to be impressive.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
We talked about that earlier.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
To keep your eye on Brian Flores and Caleb Williams
and that chest match. Good talking to you, Matt, as always, Okay,
see it all right? So yeah, I mean I like
Minnesota tonight. They have the better roster. I don't think
home field in the NFL means more than maybe a point.
There were a lot of things I thought Michael Pennis
and cam Ward looked good. Bo Nick struggled, I've got

(18:51):
some thoughts on that. I thought the Raiders. You know,
I grew up watching the Raiders on the West Coast
play those four o'clock games with Stabler and Eugene Upshaw
and I mean Fred Bulletnikoff and Cliff Branch and those
memories are so embedded for me as a kid. The
Raiders are remember when the Warriors before they got Staff.

(19:13):
I said this before. It's a great brand. It's just
been dormant or asleep for thirty years since Rick Berry.
I mean, you watched the Raiders yesterday. They got some dudes,
They got some dudes.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
They were fine. The Patriots looked inferior.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
You know, I'm gonna ask you about one guy we
haven't talked about, and that's Russell Wilson because Colin there's
a lot of people talking about this New York Giants.
See hey, Daniel Jones sure looked awesome with the Colts.
They scored on every drive. Russell Wilson and a team
that returned ten of eleven starters, and they couldn't do
anything against Washington, which doesn't even have a great defense.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
I'll ask yourself this next week at half Giants trail
fourteen to nothing, you're gonna start losing the locker room
next week?

Speaker 5 (19:57):
What about Thursday at practice?

Speaker 6 (20:00):
Because Russ did not look comfortable doing it, Malik Neighbors
was kind of erupting on the sideline. Listen, man, I
know we like Dable, he's a sharp offensive mine. But Colin,
it's starting to look like if this keeps up, he ain't.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Lasting the season.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Oh no way, I don't think so. In La, it's
the herd.

Speaker 7 (20:22):
Hey, what's up everybody? It's me three time pro bowler
LeVar Arrington and I couldn't be more excited to announce
a podcast called Up on Game?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
What is Up on Game?

Speaker 7 (20:32):
You asked, along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Huschman
Zada and Super Bowl champion Yup. That's right, Plexico Burris.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it. Up on Game We're going to be

Speaker 8 (21:04):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

Speaker 2 (21:15):
Oh Bears Vikings tonight.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
At the end of next hour, we're gonna bring on
Tid Dunn, who has a three part expose on what
a disaster, Caleb Williams rookie year behind the scenes troubling
if you're a Bears fan. They host the Vikings tonight.
I think Minnesota is a one and a half point favorite.

(21:39):
I like the Vikings. I think Brian Flores against young
quarterbacks is a problem.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Here's J Mack with.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
A news, no.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
News, this is the Herdline News.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
Let's start with a game call that we totally nailed
Texans Rams.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
The under was a no sweat first ever under bet
the Blazing five.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
So easy Rams win fourteen to nine. It was tough,
it was It was a you know, kind of an
unwatchable game.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
As we predicted.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
CJ.

Speaker 6 (22:07):
Stroud did not have a good go They settled for
three field goals in the first half, one hundred and
twenty one total net yards in the second half, two turnovers,
and I didn't.

Speaker 5 (22:18):
Like this from CJ. Stroud after the game.

Speaker 9 (22:20):
Take a listen, you come out in NFL LOLLI gaging
and you know, not going through themotions. I'm that kind
of what happened. So I think we'll be all right.
But I think it's a good way I'll call for
for me, you know, preparing. I got to do a
better job, and I also got to hold my guys accountable,
you know, for that one anxiety and it's the first
thing of the year. We got a lot of exiety
looks we did not expect.

Speaker 4 (22:41):
They did too.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
They made the play, So.

Speaker 4 (22:43):
You can come with a million excuses. We got to
just be better.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Okay, First of all, these are excellent defenses. I mean,
Frisk Jared Verse. I just think I'm going to give
both teams a pass. There's a reason I put an
under in the blazing five. These huge and Demiko Ryans
and the Rams. This game had seventeen to fourteen written.
I mean, Lit's send. Houston was driving for the win,

(23:07):
they were and Landerman, that side linebacker made a great play.
So I mean this is one it's staffords really good.
But I this was you're talking about two of the
top five or six defenses. I think Houston defense is excellent.

Speaker 6 (23:23):
It is. Stafford had a pretty damn good game twenty
one of twenty nine, two hundred and forty five yards.
I think he had PFF turned in with the most
big time throws. He had a sick no look past. Yeah,
so I thought they played well. My thing about Stroud
is these comments aren't great. And did you notice when
he's running for his life he runs like directly backwards.
He's losing so many yards on these sacks and then

(23:45):
blaming the offensive line.

Speaker 5 (23:46):
I think they lost their center.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
He was carted off. Well, they had four new starters,
lost their center.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
I mean, this game on the road before you got
there looked like trouble This looked like a troublespan again,
they were driving for the win.

Speaker 6 (23:58):
Did you see explosiveness anywhere on that offense? Like, I
get it, you know, Nick Chubb looked.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
Remember this defense.

Speaker 1 (24:04):
The Rams held Jalen Hirs to like fifty sixty yards passing.
All right, this defense is gonna make a lot of
good quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
Just click on the old Texans schedule.

Speaker 6 (24:12):
Oh interesting, they host the Buccaneers next week. It looks
like Monday Night football. Baker Mayfield, CJ Stroud, who's the
best quarterback on the field.

Speaker 5 (24:22):
In that one there? Cowherd?

Speaker 2 (24:24):
Why do I always have to make choices? What that's fun?

Speaker 6 (24:27):
We're talking about sports, it's sa ad. Anyways, all right,
let's move on to the next one. One of your
favorite teams, the Broncos. They did not look good. Oo
bow struggle biggest spread of the week, depending on the
number you got, they did not cover the eight and
a half bow Knicks was I mean struggled as being generous.
Look at that awful pocket awareness. He had a fumble,
two bad picks. I mean, look look at that throat,
what's he doing? And then he had a fourth down scramble.

(24:49):
He tried his own tush push and like tripped. It
was a total debacle. Bo Nicks did shout out the
defense afterward, which had six x.

Speaker 10 (25:00):
It's the best feeling when you got a great defense.
I mean, just over and over.

Speaker 4 (25:05):
They just kind of took a.

Speaker 10 (25:08):
You know, got us out of the jam and continue
to do that throughout the game. The one that really
sticks out is you know they get the ball, you know,
down one and we get two.

Speaker 4 (25:19):
Sacks and get him out of field for range.

Speaker 10 (25:20):
Just that'll change the game in a hurry and changed
the you know environment, get guys back into the game.

Speaker 4 (25:28):
And it was just it was awesome to see.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
And also there is something to say here about Sean
Payton challenges his quarterbacks, like really challenges them. I felt Denver,
there's so much movement, so many substitutions. I felt several
times like bow Knicks was getting to the line with
ten seconds left. You got to get to the line
with twenty on the clock. So I feel like they're

(25:53):
you know, and Sean will do this. He is gonna
make He's gonna push you to the most you can handle.
Bow Knicks is in year two and I just thought, listen,
their old line's good. Courtland Sutton's excellent, Sean's a great coach,
The defense is a sea of orange. I think they're
gonna be fine. I mean, they play how often in
the NFL can you play poorly and win well?

Speaker 6 (26:14):
When you're facing a rookie quarterback at home, you better
get that doe.

Speaker 5 (26:18):
But they struggled.

Speaker 6 (26:19):
I mean, listen, I know he's your boy, and I
like Sean Payton too.

Speaker 5 (26:22):
Some of the stuff he was.

Speaker 6 (26:23):
Calling yesterday, that foot down decision to chuck it deep.

Speaker 5 (26:26):
I mean it came Tennessee the ball.

Speaker 6 (26:27):
I didn't like what I saw at all from Denver
quickly on Tennessee. So cam Ward, if you just looked
at the stat line, twelve of twenty eight hundred and
twelve yards, so you're like, oh, he's not good. Did
you actually watch the game?

Speaker 1 (26:38):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (26:38):
I watched he Pro Football Focus, zero turnover worthy plays.

Speaker 5 (26:42):
He made good.

Speaker 6 (26:43):
Decisions, four drops by the Titans, and his average depth
of target he's throwing the ball downfield. Jared Goff was
four yards yesterday, everything short, No, cam Ward was like eleven.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
So I really like.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
What I think he made. A throw was early in
the game. It may have been first quarter or early second.
It was a jail break like twelve. It felt like
there were thirteen Broncos in his face, and without looking,
he went like perpendicular. He went to his left, perfect
throwout in the flat, and I'm like, I don't even

(27:15):
know how he saw that. Yeah, So all I know
about cam Mood is this. Some guys see the field
and some don't. That dude sees the field. He was
under the most pressure of any quarterback yesterday in the league.
He's got nothing to work with, and he is he
sees the entire field.

Speaker 5 (27:34):
Instance Again, people.

Speaker 6 (27:36):
Will say, well, they lost the bron I'm just telling
you they play the Rams this week and the line
is a touchdown and it's in Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
Oh, I love Tennessee.

Speaker 6 (27:44):
I think you've got to bet the time Jeffrey Simmons,
by the way, was awesome. Besides that stupid penalty late.
I think this team is going to be very frisky.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
Can you imagine you're in a rookie in the NFL
and you face the Broncos pass rush and then the
Rams net that's not you two best defenses in the league.

Speaker 6 (28:02):
I'm just telling you that division is going to be open.
I didn't like what I saw from the Texans. I
like what I saw from the Titans in defeat. Maybe
I'm going overboard, that's fine whatever. Final story, Colin, Oh,
let's get to the Giants. I tried to force feed
this a few minutes ago. This is Russell Wilson thing.
Oh my god, what is he doing? Eliite Neighbors was
visibly angry with him on the sideline Russ under pressure

(28:23):
two of twelve for twenty six yard brutal. This is
a veteran took two sacks afterward. There's a lot of
questions about Jackson Dart.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
Here we go, Russe.

Speaker 11 (28:35):
Like I told you guys before, Russ was our quarterback.
I think what you do with your backup quarterback and
your third corvation, make sure you have enough packages in
if they go in the game, that is stuff that
they feel comfortable with.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
So we'll see where we're at.

Speaker 11 (28:50):
We're going to get home, pat, We're gonna look at
our game collectively.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
We all got to do better.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
I was just announced that Russell Willson and will start
in a week two against the.

Speaker 6 (29:03):
Cowboys, to a chorus of booze from Giants fans. I
don't know what to make a Cowboys Giants this week?
What's the line four and a half?

Speaker 5 (29:11):
I think it was.

Speaker 6 (29:12):
It was at hold, it was three on the look ahead,
and now it's at five.

Speaker 2 (29:17):
Cowboys favored by five.

Speaker 6 (29:19):
I don't see how the Cowboys should be favored just
because they look.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
Good against the Eagles and the opener.

Speaker 2 (29:23):
Well, they get extra time. Maymember they get three extra
days of practice.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
I need to see the injuries.

Speaker 6 (29:28):
But uh I bet the Giants last week, so I'm
not doing it again. But I do think that they
will be free. That's gonna be a good game. Divisional matchup.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
Week two is an interesting betting week as you can
really act, you can fall in love. Like everybody now
will sell their Patriot stock. New England has so many
new players. I think New England will look much different
and I think Denver will look much better in a week.

Speaker 6 (29:52):
So by the way travels to Miami. So New England
Miami is good.

Speaker 5 (29:57):
But just to put a bow on the Giants washing
a Z last year literally by almost every stat was
like bottom eight in the league.

Speaker 6 (30:03):
And for the Giants to do nothing Colin was a
little troubling for Dable and Russell Wilson.

Speaker 2 (30:09):
We'll see j Mack with a news. Well that's the
news and thanks for stopping by. The Herd Line news
tied down last hour.

Speaker 1 (30:19):
Dion Dawkins is coming up the left tackle for the
Bills in a the most entertaining week one I can remember.
I mean, the one o'clock window was insane, but that
was one for the Ages and the man protecting the
backside of Josh Allen will be joining us around the corner.

(30:39):
The things we build our future around are the things
worth protecting. Making an estate plan now it sounds intimidating

Speaker 8 (31:39):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at neon Easter not a Empacific.

Speaker 5 (31:46):
Fox College Football Friday is under the lights in.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Primetime this week.

Speaker 6 (31:50):
It's a Big twelve showdown as Case State takes on
Arizona Friday night at nine Eastern on Fox.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
As predicted, Oklahoma hammered Michigan Michigan. Bryce Underwood's a really
talented receiver quarterback. They don't have a very good receivers.
They don't have a lot of juice to their offense.
Bryce Underwood's really good. But Oklahoma found their quarterback. And
Oklahoma's defense is all juniors and seniors hammered. Well, I
mean they control the games. I mean Michigan is not
built to play from behind that receiving course. Though it

(32:22):
wasn't blowout city, Yeah, I would say Oklahoma has to
feel great like the Jets, they found their quarterback. I
mean you have to say this about justin fields, like
it's a thing where like in New York, these organizations
both since Eli Manning, it's.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Like you got you're looking for your quarterbacks. It's hard.
And my take with the Giants is play.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
Jackson Dart because next year's quarterback draft is loaded.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Figure out if he can play.

Speaker 5 (32:48):
You don't want to put him behind a line that
can't protect him.

Speaker 6 (32:50):
Then he gets hurt or he just overwhelmed and you
kill the kids confidence.

Speaker 5 (32:53):
So there's no rush.

Speaker 8 (32:54):
Right.

Speaker 5 (32:55):
You need Andrew Thomas healthy, you need everybody healthy.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Yes, I believe that's true. The other thing in this sounds.

Speaker 1 (33:01):
Harsh is and this is always sound harsh, But when
you have good people in a company and you, you know,
we both have stakes in little companies, and you lose
somebody really good, you want to ideally hire somebody within
the building, right because you want to elevate. It's good

(33:22):
for morale. You move somebody up in the building. But
when you watch the Hall of Fame game, you lose
Ben Johnson, sharp as attack, Aaron Glenn, I mean, really
an elite defensive coordinator, and they decide we're just we're
just going to hire guys in the building. So Dan
Campbell is not a schematic guy, like very rarely is

(33:46):
your head coach a great scheme guy. Kyle Shanahan is
Andy Reid, Sean Payton are I mean Demko Ryans defensively is.
But generally a GM is hiring a CEO. So when
you hire Dan Campbell, he's a culture builder. He's a
guys guy, very alpha, former player, build toughness. I remember

(34:09):
going back to like Jared Goff's first year, they weren't
very good, but man, nobody played harder than this team.
So he is very reliant on scheme and coordinators. Nick Seriani,
we've seen him with great coordinators. We've seen him with
less than great coordinators, and Philly got bad really fast.

(34:29):
So again, generally your coach isn't your best scheme guy.
Shanahan is very unique. That's why Shanahan can lose guys.
It doesn't affect the offense. Andy Reid can lose offensive coordinators,
it doesn't affect it. McVeigh can lose offensive coordinators. It
doesn't affect it because they're excellent. That's not Dan Campbell.

(34:51):
So they went inside the building and handed the offense
to an older gentleman who maybe a solid coach. Ben
Jonson was best in the league, best in class. So
watching Green Bay in Detroit there is that you could
not look the Hall of Fame game. It was obvious.
It was like, yeah, this doesn't work. This doesn't work

(35:12):
at all. So I, you know, you don't want to
go overboard. But remember they're doing a couple of things simultaneously.
They're rebuilding the interior of the old line and they're
bringing in a new coordinator. So that's a big ask
if you don't have an elite offensive coordinator and you

(35:32):
don't have an elite scheme coach. But that thing yesterday
was like, I didn't feel that competitive. It wasn't Miami Colts,
but it didn't feel terribly competitive. The Jared Goff without
Ben Johnson and McVeigh if he doesn't get protection. I
said this on the Blazing five picks. You know, there's
the Jeff Fisher Jared Goff, then there's the McVeigh and

(35:54):
then he goes early without Ben Johnson. You're like, oh,
then he gets Ben Johnson. You're like, Okay, it's different.
You know are valuable, but Jared Goff is the last
of the reasonably young sit in the pocket, only he's not.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
He needs protection.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Well, they're rebuilding the interior of the old line, and
they couldn't run the game with Jamar Gibbs.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
They couldn't run the ball.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
The other thing that jumped out to me in this game,
Micah Parsons only played forty five percent of the snaps like.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
He had influence. That felt like on all of them.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
I mean they green Bay played with a ton of confidence.
And it is remarkable. When Belichick took over doing a
lot of the drafting in New England, they could not
draft offensive players. Green Bay just does not miss drafting
offensive guy all those receivers can play like all of

(36:51):
them can. So you know my takeaway when you go
into a weekend is people say you shouldn't overreact on
a Monday. Now, I I reacted at the Hall of
Fame game with Detroit hiring in the building, and I'm
reacting here. I don't care what the Vikings and Bears
look like tonight, and I've seen enough.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Of the Lions.

Speaker 1 (37:12):
Green Bay's roster now is the best, and they're not
rebuilding anywhere. Everybody else in the league's got concerns. Minnesota
doesn't know what they have a quarterback. Chicago didn't know
what they have a quarterback. They're rebuilding their own line.
The lines are rebuilding their interior old line. Green Bay's
not rebuilding anything.

Speaker 6 (37:30):
By the way, did you see Parsons in the videos
going right at Pennase sewel like getting by him like
it was nothing. Now, I know you only use on
a pitch count. Let me quickly ask you, Detroit, how
down are you? Because they will be hosting the Chicago
Bears on Sunday at one.

Speaker 5 (37:44):
It's on Fox.

Speaker 6 (37:45):
Bears on a short week, Detroit going home on the
indoor fast track, do you want to get the line
for that game.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
Oh, let me think about that.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
I would say Detroit off a humiliating loss, favored by
four five. Yeah, I would probably depending on what I
see tonight.

Speaker 6 (38:03):
Ben Johnson now going back to Detroit. He knows that
defense as well as anybody. I think that's a phenomenal
match up on Fox next Sunday. Obviously Detroit's got to
win and look good, but Chicago could be behind the
eight bol short week. Ben Johnson against Detroit's gonna be
hyped in the media. That's a fascinating game.

Speaker 1 (38:21):
There are two instances yesterday where I do think you
have to slow down on the criticism Bonnicks. Prime example,
Sean Payton puts we had Drew Brees on this show
last year ten times. Drew Brees will tell you Sean
loads you up. He is going to challenge you at
practice every day. I believe Denver, and I think knowing

(38:46):
that he was facing a rookie quarterback at home, knowing
that his defense would dominate, I think he put a
lot on bon Nick's plate. I thought they were getting
to the line way too late, so I think Denver's
offense will look better. I remember it's a seventeen game schedule.
Starters do not play in the preseason. They don't play much.

(39:09):
So there are some things I'm going to take from
bow Nix and go let's scale back. I think they'll
be fine. The other thing is Michael Pennix lost. I
thought Pennix had some sensational moments. Again, you're talking about
Todd Bowles, You're talking about you know, Tampa's probably got
the better roster. But I thought cam Ward looked really,

(39:32):
really solid. I thought Justin Fields kind of blew me away.
And I thought Michael Pennix, listen that if Michael Pennix
can play, and we'll find out if JJ McCarthy can
play to night. We know Jayden Daniels can play. Drake
may is going to be better. Have we ever had
like a six for six or a five for five
first round with quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (39:52):
I don't know that we've ever been that.

Speaker 6 (39:54):
Pennix was great, the defense was good, Baker just beat
him with the drive and the kicker missed to go
back to Denver for a sake.

Speaker 5 (39:59):
So they travel to Indy this week.

Speaker 6 (40:01):
I don't know if Indy's gonna be the surprise team
of the league or what.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
But That to me is.

Speaker 6 (40:05):
An interesting that's it for Denver because I didn't think
Bonnicks looked great, but Indy made two a look awful
two interceptions at a fumble. If bon Nix looks shaky again,
does that recalibrate your thoughts on the Broncos.

Speaker 5 (40:18):
We've seen CJ. Stroud have a sophomore slump. Who's the
other guy?

Speaker 6 (40:22):
There's a lot of concern about Jade Daniels the potential
sophomore slump.

Speaker 5 (40:25):
Do you think Knicks has one or was this just
a one off?

Speaker 1 (40:28):
Well, great quarterbacks don't have sophomore slumps. Burrow didn't, Mahomes
did well.

Speaker 5 (40:34):
I don't think we think he's in that class.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
Come on, that's right, good quarterbacks c J. Stroud do So.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
I think for great quarterbacks home field doesn't mean anything.
Mahomes can win anywhere, Josh can win anywhere, Lamar can
win anywhere. For good quarterbacks, home field means something. And
I also think for great quarterbacks they'll overcome a slightly
above average coordinator. For good quarterbacks, they'll go backwards. So

(41:00):
I mean, my strongest opinions of the week of this
weekend are Green Bay's win in that division, Green Bay,
with Micah playing less than half the snaps, played with
a confidence. I haven't seen a Packer defense play within years.
That's my strongest takeaway. My second strongest takeaway is Josh

(41:22):
Allen is the most talented quarterback I've ever seen in
my life.

Speaker 5 (41:28):
Whoa, whoa ever in your life?

Speaker 2 (41:30):
Ever?

Speaker 1 (41:31):
I've never seen a quarterback that talented. I mean, you
love Lamar. You think Lamar is going to come back
in a big spot from fifteen down with three and
a half minutes.

Speaker 6 (41:42):
Mostly talents, most so Patrick maholl. He's more talented than
Patrick Maha. Yes, bigger, stronger. He's bigger, stronger than Patrick.
That's not even debatable, right, He's two three inches bigger.
He's my three and a half inches taller. He weighs
another thirty pounds. He's got more horse powers.

Speaker 5 (41:56):
Tom Brady.

Speaker 1 (41:57):
Tom Brady's the most productive. You don't confuse product with talent.
Joe Montana again super productive. Josh Allen has a defensive
coach that half the league doesn't like. One guy had
Bill Walsh, had Belichick, has Andy Reid.

Speaker 5 (42:11):
I got a process.

Speaker 6 (42:12):
This the most talented quarterback I've ever seen him member ever.

Speaker 2 (42:15):
I remember when mel Kiper came out.

Speaker 1 (42:18):
Before the draft and he had the ten greatest quarterback
prospects ever. Josh Allen was nine or ten and he
had a losing record. He couldn't win. I watched Josh
Allen twice at Wyoming against Oregon and Iowa. I was
told by Greg Cosell the year before said watch this
kid in Wyoming. Watched the kid in my I watched him.

(42:40):
He had an insane arm and made a throw across
his body in one of the games. That doesn't make sense,
but he was He got blown out. And Seattle had
Russell Wilson in his prime going to Super Bowls, and
John Snyder and Pete Carroll went to see him play
