You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Fifteen years with the Giants, two time Super Bowl champ,
Phil Simms does some college stuff with the Believe Network
as well. Oh guy, Phil Simms. See okay, I saw
this story.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
This.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Derek Gunn is a longtime reporter in Philadelphia, and he
was on the Seth Joiner Show, and I was told
during the summer by an executive in the NFL who
I trust, talked about him. He said, Jalen Hurts is
kind of beach to his own drummer. It's not Russell
Wilson Seahawks, but he's his own guy. He's not raw,
(01:00):
go out beers after the game of the Fellas. He's
not that guy. And there was a story Derek Gunn
reports this week is that he you know, he kind of.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Runs the offense.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
He feels like running, and sometimes he frustrates coaches and
so between what I heard in that he was just
saying is you know, there's some discomfort with Hurts. So
here's my question to you. Do you have to be
Brady chugging beers with the rookies? Do you have to
be Mahomes where everybody loves him or Peyton Manning would
go out to dinner with teammates to.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Pick up the bill.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Do you have to be popular to be a successful.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Long term quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
No, of course you don't, but it does help if
you are popular and you do certain things and blend
in with the football team. You know what I know,
Jalen Hurts has taken a lot of heat.
Speaker 6 (01:47):
For being successful right now in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
And you know two yes, is he a conservative player
without question. Doesn't like to throw it over the middle,
doesn't want to throw into tight coverage and make those
type of throws.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
So he's very careful. And listen, when you've.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Got a defense like the Philadelphia Eagles, it's not the
worst thing that your offense is being very careful not
to turn the football over. It's a winning formula for
many teams. I kind of played that way. I didn't
mean to play that way. But it worked out that
way when you got a good defense, Why are you
out there trying to show everybody you can score thirty.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
And forty points?
Speaker 5 (02:24):
And you know, I think we saw something from Dalen
Hurts last year. This same thing was going on. And
then what happens. He goes to the Super Bowl and
all of a sudden he becomes man, he becomes Tom
Brady and the Super Bowl wins the MVP.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
So you had a year back in the eighties, you
won a Super Bowl and through twenty two picks. I
have always defended interception quarterbacks. I defend Lway, I defend
Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning. Aaron Rodgers was one of the
first quarterbacks in my life that you got all the
upside and no picks. That thing used to I mean,
at the bottom line is throw a ball down the
(02:59):
damn field like dink and dumb guys. So Donald has
Donald has nine games three plus picks, Andrew Luck had
nine games three or plus picks. It doesn't he may
never He's not as good as Luck. He may never
win a Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
But I like the.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Fact that Sam tows a horrible pick and it doesn't
bother him at all. Where are you on interceptions quarterbacks
bouncing off mistakes because Donald had a stinker, but Andrew
Luck had ten stinkers.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
Yeah, it's a lot there. You know, I'll say this
right off the stuff.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
You know, I never had the giants in those years
when we were really win the games. They never said,
you know, Peel, you got to be a little more careful.
You know, Parcelles was not that kind of guy. He
would not get too angry. I mean, sometimes he get
angry because I throw an interception. Go wow, that might
be the dumbest playoff ever made in my career. But
otherwise what you said is true, Man, throw it down
(03:54):
the field. We want big plays. Big plays win games.
And then if I started checking it down too much,
he goes. He would yell at me and go, oh, what
are you worried? Sim's about your completion percentage? And you know,
just go, hey, I'm just trying to move us down
the field and score right right. So yeah, and Sam Donald,
I would just say this, we know what happened in
the last two games last year with him, and then
(04:16):
they's playing the game, he's playing against the Rams and
all that. Sometimes as a quarterback, you're only your first,
and you try to do this is I'm not gonna
make that mistake today. Play it careful. If the game
is close, you're playing a really good team, that's all right.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
When the time comes, there's.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Going to be a big play in the game where
it's going to be easy for you to make, and
when you do that, it changes the narrative everywhere.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
But I was I got to tell you.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Some of those interceptions that Sam Donald through last week.
Speaker 6 (04:46):
Wow, that's all I can say. Wow. You know you've
got to pull it back. Sometimes you just can't.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
You can't swing for the damn fences every time the
balls pitched to you.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
And that's kind of what Sam Darnald. He did it.
I was really.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Surprised, but I was also really surprised about the type
of interceptions they were.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
So I used to believe that you got to give
a quarterback three years, but now they have private coaching,
seven on seven summer drills. Kids throw ten thousand passes
by the time they're fourteen. So my take is not
three years, It is Thanksgiving of year two. GM coach
coordinator go upstairs, raise their hands. Do we draft again
or not? Do we extend eventually? So I have shortened
(05:29):
the timelineup. So I mean Josh Rosen got thirteen starts,
Johnny Manziel got seven or eight.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
What do you do with JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
This is a good tool belt, Phil Justin, Jefferson, Jordan Addison,
Kevin O'Connell, great left tackle. Like this is not you know,
this is not a bad franchise. This is not what
Caleb got last year in Chicago. How long do you
give JJ McCarthy before you go upstairs? Just sit in
a room and raise your hand and say, guys, we
got to go in another direction.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Well, you know he's going to get the rest of
the year. I watched that game this past weekend. I thought, man,
if they had like a quality veteran backup, I think
they would have brought him in there. You know, JJ McCarthy.
You know, look, there are some things he does well.
He moves around well, he's got a strong arm. But
he's got one pitch and that one pitch is I'm
going to throw the damn thing as hard as I can.
(06:19):
And it doesn't matter if you're ten yards of twenty
or forty yards.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
I mean, he's a.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
I think deep down the field, you see it he's
a pretty good thrower, but in the NFL, the game
is really played from let's just say the line of
scrimmage to fifteen yards down the field, and you've got
to be a machine hitting those plays. And I haven't
seen that from JJ McCarthy and a lot of it.
There's many things. I think there are technique problems. I
see people talking about it all the time. Will tell
(06:44):
me what it really is and they can't do that,
But it's it's it's the You've got to hit all
those routine throws. And that's one of the biggest things
I think hurts him and hurts the football team right now.
And I'll give credit to the receivers very good. They're
successful and they're kind of biting their tongue and they're
not getting on the quarterback yet. But man, he's got
(07:06):
to pick up the way he plays. He's got to
become more accurate throwing the football.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Okay, I want to ask you two questions because you
do college football stuff, and I'll get to Mendoz in
a second. I want to start with Shador Sanders. I
thought he was a at worst mid to late second
round guy. The people I trusted in the NFL said, yeah,
I mean he's mid second. They liked him as much
as Jackson Dart some more and he drops the fifth.
(07:32):
I then heard about him basically blowing the Giants interview bad,
the legendary stuff all over his draft room, the speeding tickets.
Obviously some maturity issues there that I didn't know about.
He starts this weekend. Were you when you were doing
your college stuff the last few years, were you a
Sheduer fan? Or did he run backwards too much? You know,
(07:56):
there were signs he could be impatient. Where were you
on him coming out of college?
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Well, you know, listen the fact that I don't look
at their stats and say, oh, he ran around too much.
Those are things you can really correct and very short time.
I did like him in college. Look, he looks to
me he plays really big on the field as he
takes too many sacks and try to extend plays. Absolutely,
he did it last week when he came in the game.
Speaker 6 (08:23):
He did it.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
He did it in college. But what, there's many things here.
I think he'll play. Of course, I think everybody thinks
he'll play really well against the Raiders. The Raiders the
defense not that good. Kevin Stefanski when I watch him
over the years, go back to when Joe Flackel took
the team to the playoffs and all that they had
one of the best, if not the best, deep throwing
(08:46):
offense in the NFL. So many good designs as Stefanski's
really good at. And you know what that fits Shador.
He's another guy he would rather. He's good throwing the
ball deep down the field. He's a good short thrower,
but it's the in betweens that you worry about. And
I would be shocked, and I said this to somebody
working with you. I just said, if he's I believe
(09:08):
when they start the game this weekend, he'll be about
eight for ten out of the first ten throws because
they're going to give him screens, make sure it's easy,
get him involved in the game, and then as time
goes on, they'll open it up and give him and
do what he's probably best at, and that's getting a
little more protection.
Speaker 6 (09:24):
And throwing the football deep down the field. I don't
know if I answered you question. That's what I think.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
No.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Fernando Mendoza played at Cow. The kid is supposed to
be an unbelievable student and at Indiana and Cow. He's
not playing with five star vam Ohio State guys. That's
not what he's playing with. I like that, by the way.
I like college guys who come out of Cow.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
N see state.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yourself, smaller schools. You know, it's not it's not Georgia talent.
It's like middling talents that you got to throw open.
I think he separated him in that Penn State drives.
I watched that drive and I thought, on the road,
big pass rush, Penn State's got elite defensive players, and
right in the teeth of it, he just threw Sunday throw.
(10:12):
Sunday throw, Sunday throw. I see potentially a really high
end college kid.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
What do you see?
Speaker 5 (10:22):
I see a really high end college kid big time.
And I mean, if you're phrasing it about the pros,
I think he'll be a very successful quarterback in the pros.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
I mean he's tall.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
I did their game against Iowa, probably the worst game
of the year for him, but I didn't come away
with it going oh my gosh, he played man. In fact,
I came away and I said, all the talents that
you want to see in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
He showed you on that field. He just makes great throws.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
He's got a very compact motion, spins the ball, can
really drive it, and he's tough as hell.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
And the other thing that really I like.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
I like these college quarterbacks that are playing somewhat of
a pro offense. Yet I'm look at I look at Indiana,
and man, they do the same damn thing every week,
and they might put a little dressing to it sometimes,
But I like everything about him.
Speaker 6 (11:10):
I think some people worry, oh is it going to work?
Is he mobile enough? Hey?
Speaker 5 (11:14):
Man, when you're a quarterback like him who's been taught
so well and has the talent that he's going to
learn very quickly. Hey, the NFL's different, and I think
he'll be somewhat of an instant success, kind of like
Jackson Dart. Jackson Dart, I mean, he played Lane Kiff
and it's got so many pro looks to it, and
(11:34):
all the experience, all those years and all those throws.
It translates to the NFL very quickly. It's not like
Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams was always in charge and now
he's playing better. Why because Ben Johnson is stepping on
him and the offense fitsing, and of course he's learning
and everything.
Speaker 6 (11:53):
So I do like Mendoza a lot, Collin.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
To answer your question, what you just said is exactly
A top offensive coach told me this week off air.
He told me he said Indiana runs so many he'll
be an easy quarterback to evaluate. They run so much
pro stuff that it's very obvious. You'll know very he goes. This,
coach said, I watched him a couple of times on TV.
(12:18):
You can see they're running pro stuff. He'll be an
easy evaluation. Even Mahomes out of the Big twelve, nobody
knew if some of that stuff was gonna work. Or
like Josh Allen at Wyoming, you're like, that's bad competition.
I've been told now that he'll be an easy comp
that's a lot of Sunday stuff and you just echoed it.
So you're seeing the same thing.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
My guy was.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Yeah, I you know, these college quarterbacks when I'm bored,
I try to go through all these guys and just
watch them real quick and just seeing him in person
and talking to him, I mean, he is everything you
want at the professional level and being your quarterback the
guy you know, so you know it's hard on these
young quarterbacks, which like I've said before and probably said
to you already, and they we judge him too hard,
(13:03):
too fast, and you know, so we're seeing some of
these guys in the second year.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
Kayleb Williams he's the greatest example of all.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
You know, he's coached differently, different offense and fitsing and
you know, he's got pride and he's so he shows
that in the way he's playing. And it's I'm excited
just watching and seeing Ben Johnson with him and how
they're doing it, and I know they're being tough on
him and he's he's taking it the right way and
it shows on the field as always.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Philip's great seeing you is that it well it was
twelve minutes. That's all that's on my show. That's a
big hit, it is.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Okay, Hey, you know there's a couple of guys on
one one earlier.
Speaker 6 (13:44):
Bo Nicks.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
He's a man, okay, I mean a man, and he
does not even flinch what he's playing the game there
he is against Kansas City.
Speaker 6 (13:54):
He's looking for the kill shot.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
And of course he's coached by the guy that's right
with him and Davis Webb. They're helping the quarterbacks. I mean,
that's just one of these These young quarterback here are
a lot of talk at all, bone.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Nicks, this and that.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
Yeah, he might not be at the top of his
game yet, but he's he's finding a way to get there,
and I really I love watching him play too.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
By the way, he is also aggressive. He's an aggressive
throw over the football.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
Absolutely, he's not checked down, Charlie, let's put it that way.
Speaker 6 (14:22):
And he did it against Kansas City.
Speaker 5 (14:25):
So you saw that he's willing to do the right
thing and take a chance and not worried about if
he's going to be the goat or the hero, which
is pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Good Scenia. All right, Concinia, thank you, Phil.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Good seeing you. Thanks for having me on J Mac.
Keep working on those arms, man, they're looking good.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Anytime J Matt gets a chance to do the.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
You know, the gun show.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
What these are an all natural I'm not doing steroids.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah, I mean your shirts are always a little tighter
than mine.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
That's okay.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
This medium is my favorite size.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen to over Promised
with Cadino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
J back with the news.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
This is the headline news.
Speaker 9 (16:19):
It's tough to get you to laugh sometimes, but I
like what I feel it out and that I could tell, Oh,
he's in for some good one liners today, Colin we
got we got to start here in the final hour
with Brian Dabole. Obviously was fired by the Giants, but
they played tough against the Packers, and Jameis Winston's getting
some praise from around the league that hey, he wasn't terrible.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Here's Dan Campbell talking about what he saw.
Speaker 10 (16:42):
I think there was some fresh energy last week when
you watched him against Cream Bay. You know, you know,
I think it's sometimes it's just that that newness, you know,
and you don't know how long that can possibly last,
or the rebound on it. But I think just the
change itself, something a little bit different than little new
can spark.
Speaker 9 (16:59):
You interesting take. Now, here's the latest. Is Jackson Dart
If he clears concussion protocol today, he's gonna get the start.
They're still waiting. I haven't seen anything.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Yeah, this game is interesting.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Detroit plays on Thanksgiving, look ahead spot for them. Dart
may play. Everybody loves Detroit. They're great at home. It's
a weird spot. I'd stay away Detroit for me. I
think they'll win. But if Dart plays, it's a different offense,
no question.
Speaker 11 (17:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (17:27):
So one of the other things is the Lions, off
of a loss with Goff and Campbell, have won thirteen
straight and covered all of them. They bounced back really
well from defeat going home against a bad team.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
One thing is the Giants have dialed up the blitz
a lot more.
Speaker 9 (17:42):
They were going after Jordan Love I mean, good luck
blitzing Jared Goff and leaving those fast receivers Jmo.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Amarah on an island. Laporta's the guy to watch.
Speaker 9 (17:52):
Did you notice the offense was really bad against Philly
without Laporta?
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Yes, huge loss. So what we'll see if they get
him back.
Speaker 9 (18:00):
One of us may have bet the Lions earlier this
week and maybe regretting it at Jackson Dart starts, but
we shall see. All right, Let's move on to Tampa
Bay Colin. Huge game for the flailing Bucks on Sunday
Night Football. How about this news. Baker Mayfield and Amika
Abuca were among six Bucks who missed practice on Wednesday
(18:21):
due to an illness going around the facility. Todd Bowle
said the illness is hitting the team so hard they
made Wednesday's practice a walkthrough. I don't know what's going
on with Tampa. They you know, they have to play
a couple good teams here of late, and they're struggling.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Breaking news. The Rams are a really good team.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (18:40):
I remember I tease this Stafford against the Bulls historically
and how he handles the blitz. You know, I'm gonna
save it for one more day. But I'm just telling
you guys right now, Todd Bowles stays to his principles
and blitz of Stafford. You know, Rams are gonna hang
a forty birder with ease.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Rams are really healthy right now. And I one of
the things that is so they are. The Rams do
not beat themselves. No, they just don't.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
I mean they don't.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
They're not turning it over, they don't have any penalties.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
They are they're playing.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
I think they're playing even better than the Super Bowl
year because the Super Bowl year.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
They got off to a rough start with Stafford.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
If you remember, he was new learning the system, and
Matt could be you know, he's learning the system. He
was a little reckless at times that year. This is
a as to me, the last five or six weeks
is as well, including the Super Bowl year, as Stafford
and McVay have ever been together. They are so in
unison right now. It's everything is working. They don't get penalized,
(19:45):
they're healthy, they can go thirteen personnel, they can go
three tight ends. Take Pooka off the field. They've got DeVante.
They they are really this is as good as Stafford
and McVay. This is about as good as I've ever
seen them play together.
Speaker 9 (20:01):
Yeah, and you know from today's Tampa practice, no Jammel
Dean their top cornerback, no Hassan Reddick, arguably.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Their best aad rusher.
Speaker 9 (20:09):
So things are lining up. I'm guessing that Rams will
touch a touchdown here? Is that something that would interest you? U?
Speaker 6 (20:15):
Rams?
Speaker 5 (20:15):
At so far?
Speaker 9 (20:17):
Interesting final story, Colin, Let's go to your boy bo Nicks. So, man,
he's got the magic touch. Denver's on an eight game
winning streak heading into their by with a nine and two,
mark well ahead of the lowly Chiefs in the AFC West. Now,
Drake May and the Patriots also a riding an eight
game win streak there first since Tom Brady had one.
(20:38):
This is the first time the league has had two
quarterbacks on an eight game win streak since nineteen eighty four.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
Wow, do you want to guess who those quarterbacks were
in eighty four? They're pretty Elway Marino?
Speaker 9 (20:51):
Yeah, so I don't want to put bow Nicks and
Drake May in that category. Now they're two young quarterbacks.
Remember Marino and l we were very young. Do you
see like a holy cow? These guys could be superstars
down the road from Nix and May Well.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
I think Drake May is like Marino and Elway is
the traits. He's just big with a big arm, and
he moves. Drake May's got better traits than bo. He's
just a bigger, stronger guy. So it's a real not
only accurate. I mean his completion percentage and I mean
(21:27):
the Patriots old line's solid.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
It's not exceptional.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
They don't have receivers that are getting massive space and separation.
He's completing seventy one percent of his thrones and he's
not a dink and dung guy throws the ball down
the field.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
That's an insane number.
Speaker 9 (21:40):
It boggles the mind to see these hot take artists say, oh,
the Patriots their fools gold with Drake May. If you
look at the gambling odds, they're favored to be the
number one seed. Drake May, I mean, I don't think
I'm ready to do this. He's like top three for MVP.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
Colin.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
If you look at the odds and they know a
little bit about the odds, like.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
If Drake May's the number one seed, there's a world
where he's the MVP of the league.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Now.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
I don't know if Allan misses out on that, but
that's how good May's been.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
Well, think about quarterbacks who in their second year won
the MVP, like Lamar Mahomes. I mean, you're in an
elevated class. Josh Allen didn't even win it in his
second year. So if Drake May, I mean, it almost
guarantees greatness. Is that that early MVP pretty much as
signed you're on a different plane.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Yeah, jmck with the news, Well.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
That's the news, and thanks for stopping by. The herd
Line News.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Weather forecast earlier in the show Phil Simms, Greg co Sell,
all sorts of good stuff. I thought it was interesting
Greg co Cell talking about Philadelphia's past offense, how it
was it was kind of simple, he said, it's, you know,
fairly remedial. It's not terribly complex. But you know, I
don't know why or what I mean to some degree,
(22:58):
I will say this, he throws a pretty good deep ball,
and both DeVante and aj There are very few teams
that have two guys that are good deep ball targets,
you know, like Pooka to me is like mid fifty
eighteen yards in under.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
That's Puka's strength.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
There's not a lot of teams T Higgins and Jamar
Chase Addison and Justin Jefferson can both have some separation.
But I thought that was interesting by Greg Cosell. We'll
talk about that next to Herd.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
Welcome back.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
Yeah. Greg co Sell earlier today talking about Philadelphia. The
story that you know, he's kind of irritating the head
coaches in Philadelphia and Philadelphia is a one of the
things I like, and I like this about Nick Foles
and in Philadelphia, he kind of doesn't have the personality
to get people riled up. He kind of suppresses all
(23:59):
the noise. And I think that's one of the things
I've always loved about Dak. Dak doesn't he doesn't ignite fires.
He puts him out. You know, you had a lot
of Jerry and the Dallas media and the Cowboys and
comps and big rivalry games, and Dak just sort of
cools the noise, slows down the fear fury in Dallas.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
I think Jalen Hurts is great at that.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
But there are reports from Derek Gunn is a long
time reporter in Philadelphia, that he can kind of drive
the staff, you know, a little crazy because he's kind
of doing his own thing in games in which you know,
they want him to make certain throws and he does
it at practice, game time.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
He does his own thing.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
And here's I asked Cosel, I mean, what do you
see on film about Philly's pass offense.
Speaker 11 (24:47):
When you watch their offense and their pass game in particular,
the one thing you definitely see is that it's it's
rather elementary and remedial in their concepts. And that's just
what the tape shows they don't do a lot, you know,
talk about other quarterbacks and other coaches. You watch a
Ben Johnson offense, you know me. You will have to
know I don't rip coaches. This is not a knock
on Jalen Hurts. I don't know what goes on in
(25:09):
their meetings. I don't know what goes on in their
locker room, but I can tell you that the tape
shows that their offensive pass concepts are just there. They're
rather basic and simplistic for the NFL.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
Another quarterback story, and I do think Shadur Sanders is
interesting his dad's primetime. But usually when a quarterback comes
in in a late game situation or it's a late drive,
you would see Tom Brady do this a lot. He
would tell the crowd, quiet down, quiet down, we need
to hear. That's something you I've seen. I can think
(25:45):
in my head, I can think of Peyton Manning doing that, like, guys,
bring it down. You know the crowd, you got to
be on our side here, bring it down. Apparently Shadeur
came in this week and did the opposite. It was
like makes some noise and Joe Batonio one of his
offensive Lineman's like time out.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
We can't hear, don't do that. Here's his interior offensive line.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
I was like, hey, makes you quite the crowd down.
Speaker 12 (26:15):
And then I watched the replay and he was hyping
him up, and I was like, well, I can't really
hear here, but you know, it was it was, you know,
his moment to play. But I think as the game
got on, you know, there was a couple of moments
where he was getting really you know, excited, and those
moments are important, but like there's a fine line of
like great energy and like, hey, let's get the next
play call in, you know. And so I think he'll
(26:37):
understand that as he goes. But you know, when you're
in that moment, he's kind of just playing off feelings
and those were kind of the moments that he was
he was playing with.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Yeah, and I think that's a that's a very reasonable criticism.
He hasn't had a ton of awareness. Two speeding tickets,
legendary draft room, going in headsets onto the New York
Giants interview, Like he's telling the crowd, bring it on,
bring it on, and his teammates like, no, don't do that,
we want to Quiet's Chad is kind of in the Chaduer.
(27:07):
He's kind of his own guy and whatever. I don't
want to pick on the kid, but I think one
of the reasonable criticisms of him he runs backward too much.
You can't argue that lacks some self awareness, and uh,
you know, it's not the end of the world, but
it's not great and self awareness becomes very important in
(27:29):
this league. And by the way, this is what you
know Greg Cosell and Phil simm said about Sam Darnold, Like,
when you have a defense as good as Seattle, you
don't need to take as many risks. I mean the
coaching staff, they run. I think they run their run
rates like top four or five in the league. So
there's a lot of things that go into quarterback. What's
your defense, Like where's our field position? What's the momentum
(27:52):
in the game, Like, there's all sorts of things. When
you're a corner, you're on an island, your responsibility is
stay on my guy right or you have quarters in
the NFL on his own, this is my quarter quarterback.
There are so many things to think about time in
the game, clock, what's the score, what down is it?
(28:14):
You know, do we have current momentum. I mean sometimes
you'll see this where somebody on defense gets banged up
and a coach like a Sean Payton will literally call
a play to pick on the new corner. Matt Lafleur
will see, you know, a corner get banged up for
the Bears, They'll call a play to go after the
new guy on the field at corner for the Chicago Bears.
(28:36):
So being a quarterback, it's really concentrating on the right stuff,
not the crowd. Not getting the crowd fired at irrelevant.
That's not your thing. If anything, suppressed crowd noise.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Don't elevate it. So it's a little thing. It's not
the end of the world.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
And I think he plays pretty well against the Raiders,
who look like a beaten franch nothing's going on. There's
nothing about the Raiders I like it is. You know,
it's interesting. Their first pick was Ashton Genty, who I
think is good. He's really hard to judge because the
Raiders O line is so bad and also the Raiders
(29:14):
trail in a lot of their games in the second half. Well,
what aren't you gonna do?
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Run the ball?
Speaker 1 (29:19):
So Ashton Jenny has a bad old line and his
team trails a lot. Well, it's hard for me to
judge a rookie running back based on those two factors.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
I'm you know, it's and I don't think.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
I don't think he's Zeke or Saquon Barkley is a talent,
but I do think he's good.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
But there are certain young players.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I don't know what to make of the Raiders right now,
and I don't know what to make of Ashton Genty
once they put their arms around Geno Smith. To me,
the season has an absolute ceiling and it's been the
worst of times for it. For the record, j Mac,
I like Cleveland in this spot. I don't think the
Raiders will move the ball much. I like Cleveland here
(29:57):
in a low scoring game.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
What say you?
Speaker 9 (30:00):
Well, I had also like Cleveland, but the line keeps
going up. It was three, now three and a half.
I'm seeing some fours. The Browns have some offensive line
injury issues. Let me let me get them for you.
Right now, it seems like their interior offensive line could
be missing a guy or two. Not great obviously, with
Crosby on the opposite side of the ball, I just
I can't I don't think I can back the Raiders
(30:21):
in any way, shape or form, I would say Browns
are pass I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Yeah, it was yesterday I noted this, so I love
mock drafts. Yeah, and I went and looked. It's really interesting.
And this is why I believe the Niners have so
much leverage with mac Jones now that Perty's back, is
that you go look at the mock draft Jmack.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
You can make an.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Argument five teams in the first nine picks are going
to draft quarterbacks or could.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
They'll need them.
Speaker 9 (30:47):
But I don't know that there's quarterbacks there By the way,
speaking of quarterbacks, the Rams, I think have the Falcons
pick next year. They do and the Falcons keep losing it.
Now Kirk Cousins is starting Drake London's out. Are the
Rams going to maybe go to the Super Bowl and
get like a top seven pick? That would be insane.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
That's what I've said about the Rams could draft a quarterback.
But I I will tell you what an executive in
the league texted me yesterday. He said, it's a thick
quarterback class. He goes, there'll be two in the first,
three in the second, two in the third. He said,
it's thick. Heause a lot of times you get like
(31:24):
three really good prospects, they're out of the first fourteen picks,
they're all gone, and there's maybe one second round quarterback,
and then you don't have one to the fifth. This
GM said, it's a thick class. He said, the lot
of a couple a couple first, a couple second. I
would say this a lot of high to middle seconds.
It could go from thick to thin. If like Dante
(31:46):
Moore doesn't come out, I don't think he's coming out
because I think I think Oregon has the ability to
pay five million bucks woo. I don't think Dante Morris
coming out. I think he's going to be excellent. My
guess is he comes back for one more year. He's
only twenty.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
He could he could use it.
Speaker 9 (32:03):
Yep.
