Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
There's always a game played every year at this time,
a little earlier this year in fact, with coaches getting fired,
that means there's openings and people getting discussed. The coach
will always dismiss any rumor I have not talked to anybody. Well,
that's because they have a powerful agent like Jimmy Sexton
(00:46):
that does all the calling, and so that allows a
coach to say, I don't know what you're talking about.
I haven't talked to anybody. The question should be have
you or your agent discussed anything, because that's the game
that gets played. So last week, Diana Russini, the athletics
senior NFL insider who's joining US Live. First things first,
(01:07):
she'll be on it today. Sark dismissed the report, but
I had said it about a month ago. I'm like,
if I was an NFL guy, Sark's got to be
top of my list on one of the guys he's
worked in the NFL. He's been great at college. What
did you make of him dismissing your report.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Against all the fun stuff?
Speaker 4 (01:26):
First of all, congratulations on the induction in the Radio
Hall of Fame. Your voice has been a companion to
so many people, including myself during my lonely days when
I was living out in Portland and Seattle, and I
had a really low level job in sports, and I
didn't know what I wanted to do, but you were
my company, you were my friend. So this isn't just
a temporary thing, this is forever my friend. So congrats
(01:47):
to you. Quite the honor. So let's dive into this, right, So, yeah,
you're right. Jimmy Sexton puts out a statement pretty quickly
denying that Steve Sarkisian would have any interest in the NFL. Right,
And that's not what I reported. I reported that his
representatives told NFL decision makers, not just the Tennessee Titans,
(02:10):
just people in the NFL, that Steve Sarkisian would have
interest in a head coaching job if there were one
to open. Right, Because obviously Tennessee is the only one
that's available at this moment. But as we know, this
is all going to change over the next few weeks,
and as we get closer to the end of December,
there will be more opening. So look, the reason why
they came out strong against this is this is not
(02:32):
good for Steve sarkasion at Texas, right, He just signed
a new contract. He tells everybody he's happy, and I
believe he is happy, Like I think he likes being
the coach of Texas.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
I don't have those doubts.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
But he has the most powerful agent in college sports
for a reason. This is what Jimmy Sexton is paid
to do. It is to make sure that Steve Sarkashan
has all the options. We could probably have a long
conversation about whether or not we think the Texas job
is actually better than the Titans job, right, But most
guys that I talked to in football specifically will tell
(03:06):
you they will take the worst job in football in
the NFL over the best job in college So at
the end of the day, yes, Texas is one of
the great coaching places.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
To be but a the NFL, right, Yeah, I mean,
you don't have to recruit deal with donors, you get
an occasional impulsive owner. Some aren't, some are. Diana Russini
joining us, all right, I want.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
To ask you.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
The Athletic has the article about AJ Brown and he
I'm sympathetic to it. He's a bit of a loner.
He said he struggles making friends. And I said, you know,
Jalen Hurtz is one of those guys. We're very unfair
about this. When a quarterback enters the NFL, we need
you to be forty three years old. At twenty three,
you've got to be a CEO, a psychologist. I mean,
(03:49):
Dak Prescott walked into Dallas and it was like Dez Bryant,
Jerry Jones, the media, and he was great and very
few humans can do it. Jalen Hurts, I think has
that component to his personality. He's like the cooler. He
brings the temperature down in loud Philly. What is the
current relationship, Diana, with your reporting on the Hurtz aj
(04:12):
Brown relationship today.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, on the field, it's not great, right because there's
obviously a not there's not a very good connection there.
Aj Brown has been very public on social media about
how he feels about it, and in that article with
The Athletic, he doesn't want to just be used using
his words right in the moments when when Philly needs
him to come through. He wants to be part of
(04:36):
this Philly offense throughout the game. And when you talk
to people around the league that have had to defend
the Eagles over the last few weeks, they say they
understand where AJ's coming from, right, but what's good for
the team. The offense that we saw run this past
week against the New York.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Giants is the offense the Eagles want to.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Be when Saquon Barkley gets going and there's a g
and they protect, well, that is where they're always going
to go. And AJ Brown knows that. Now, look, the
passing game opens up when Saquon can run.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Well.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Aja also knows that. But it is very apparent that
he's not happy there. He does not want to be
in Philadelphia. And I don't think he's trying to hide
it either. I don't think you have to be a
reporter to even understand it. I think what Nick Sirianni
is so good at managing, though, are these personalities. And
they spend a lot of time with Aj trying to
have these conversations of like, look, we're going to get
(05:29):
you the ball, We're going to sort this out. We've
got a first time offensive coordinator here, call in place.
We just need a little bit more time. The problem
is we've got the trade deadline coming up. Okay, teams
have called the Eagles about AJ Brown because they can
see it.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
They know there's a problem.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Here, And for now, Philly's saying, unless this is a
gigantic offer, a blockbuster deal, we are sticking with AJ Brown.
They're on a bye week this week, and I actually
think this works in the favor of Philly. I think
this just lets everybody cool off and sort it out
and sort of to get realigned to what they want
to do coming out of the buy. So we'll see
(06:04):
how this goes. But there's still a few days before
the trade deadline.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
You've been talking to Jerry and Stephen Jones in the
last week or two. Jerry made a comment that he
would make a move at the trade deadline, which I
think is terrifying because they've got two first round picks
and they don't need a quarterback. That is the catbird
seat in the NFL, Like the Rams, don't need one today,
but they probably need one because match thirty seven, DA's
(06:27):
got four to five more good years, two first round picks.
The next two years. They can move down, they can
get more picks. So when Jerry says, hey, I want
to make a deal maker, I'm like, no, no, no, no,
somebody step in front of Jerry. Don't do that. When
they say that, do you buy into it? Do you
think they'll make a move here in the next few days?
Speaker 3 (06:44):
No, I don't. I don't.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
I hear him, and I spent an hour talking with
him about what they're going to do, just trying to
pick his brain, like trying to kind of cut through all,
you know, all just the gibber that he gives us
a lot, and he has the picks.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
He gets it.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
He doesn't have any regrets from the Micah Parsons trade
because he got those picks. I think they're looking at
the landscape of the league right now and they want
to find some talent.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I just don't think there's a lot out there for him.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
I think they want to take a swing for a
big player, but those players aren't available, and I think
that's the point.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
They're right. He knows the defense needs help.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
What they did against the Commanders was good because they
had good turnovers, but then what we saw last week,
they took a step back again. It is apparent that
that is the weakness of this Dallas Cowboys team.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
So what does that mean?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
With just being a few days out from this November
fourth trade deadline, they're making calls, but I don't think
there's a player out there that they think can fix it.
I don't think it's just one player and they know it.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
So the trade deadline coming up, I think Buffalo could
use help. I think the Colts would look for a
pass rusher. Rams solved their corner issue. Let me throw
Detroit out Colts in Detroit, I keep hearing rumors. What
do you hear?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Those are good?
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Yeah, they're not rumor pass rush for sure for Detroit.
The position that Indy needs is corner. Like they are
desperate and they are working the phones right now trying
to fill because they're dealing with tons of injuries. Lou
Ana Roumo has made some magic over the last few
weeks with that situation, and I think we could all
fairly say this is a team that's going to go
(08:19):
in the playoffs and if they can fix this one weakness.
They've got a really good shot. I don't find Detroit
to be as desperate. I think the way this roster's
constructure right now, they're really good shape. But they could
use that help too at corner and pass rush as well.
The Philadelphia Eagles, I mean, we know Howie Rosmon is
always working the phones. They need an edge rusher badly
(08:41):
and everybody knows it, and they're making calls everywhere. And
that's that's really the position Colin, that that teams are
desperate for. It's all pass rush. That is where if
you're a pass rusher right now, someone probably called for you,
even if you're not that good, because there's just such
a need. So I expect Philly to make them move here.
Miami has some players that are available that they could
(09:04):
be calling, and you're right, Buffalo is looking for wide receiver.
They're also looking for some help on the defensive.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Side of the ball.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
They're looking at safety. So lots of needs for teams.
I just don't know if there's a lot available.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah, well, I think you know, fans have gotten smarter,
gms have gotten smarter. There's so much transparency the you know,
the Chargers have been patient and Joe Alt came back
and they're fine. I think Miles Garrett, I said yesterday,
I could see because I think Daniel Jones will sign
an extension. They got their coach, their quarterback, They've got weapons.
(09:39):
I could see, they got their own line. I could
see Chris badderd going, we'll give you two ones for
Miles Garrett. Would Cleveland consider Now? Cleveland's got two ones already,
how many do you need Miles Garrett? Any chance he
moves now.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
They won't do it.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
And look, every general manager ever had this conversation with
will always go well, unless it's like unbelievable, then you
got to take it right. So with that in mind,
if the way I'm translating, or at least at least
the way I'm hearing, Cleveland they don't want.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
To move him.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
They know they need him on this team. They don't
have much in Cleveland in terms of what to hang.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Their hat on.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
They need to figure out the quarterback position. And if
they can figure that out and have Miles Garrett on
the other side of the ball, I think in their
mind they can construct something decent. Now teams are still calling,
but teams that I've spoken to over the last twenty
four hours will say that have reached out to Cleveland
have all been told the same thing. We're not moving him,
We're not dealing him. So I think the idea is there,
(10:43):
just the way it is with Max Crosby. I know
there was some chatter about the Dallas Cowboys perhaps being
interested in him. I think that's another organization that doesn't
want to let go of a player.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Of that talent. The Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Jeffrey Simmons another guy that I mean, if I'm Jerry Jones,
I'm beg.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
The Titans for that.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
It's less money than Micah Parsons, and he could be
a great.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Addition to that pass rush.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
But Tennessee's another team they're not willing to move on them.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Great stuff, Diana Russini, First things first today, you know
this TV thing is pretty cushy. You may want to
consider it, You're not. Writing's hard.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Writing is hard, but I like it. But I don't know.
I do a little bit of everything these days, you know.
I'm just trying to keep up with you.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
Colin.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Great to see it. Congrats all right, Diana Russini, thank
you for the compliments for us and the staff cover
in the NFL for ten years. The Athletic Senior NFL Insider. Yeah,
I mean, they're not many players I would give up.
I mean I would give up a couple of first
for a lot of quarterbacks. I mean, you think about that.
If tomorrow Patrick mahomes five first round picks. I didn't
(11:50):
feel enough. Miles Garrett, I would give up two first
round picks. I'm trying to think of the defensive players
now in the NFL. Miles Garrett, that's it. I think
Jared Verse, I'd give up maybe a first and a second.
I think he's unbelievable. You know, it's an offensive league,
but you you you know I've said before keep your
(12:11):
defense young, twitchy and deep, that you're gonna have to
pay eventually for the big dog up front, the Max Crosby,
the Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 2 (12:21):

Jmack with the news.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
No, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
This is the herd Line News.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
All right, let's start with the Dallas Cowboys, Colin.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
They've been an interesting story to see that Dak Prescott rejuvenated,
largely thanks to mister Pickens, but also Brian Schottenheimer said,
a good first year, I mean, surprising that hell out
of us.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
They're three four and one.
Speaker 8 (13:17):
But Schottenheimer got a little combative with the media, saying,
the only stat that matters is wins.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
None of us have done good enough, you know, I
mean coaches, players, head coach, none of us have done
good enough. That's that's real. I mean, our scorecard is
what it is, you know, and that's not just you know, defensively,
that's offensively. You know, we're a football team that's three
four and one. You can take the stats on offense
and as far as I can concern. I mean, is
(13:44):
what it is we want to win?
Speaker 1 (13:47):
You know, I don't.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
Are we really bleeping out shove it up here?
Speaker 5 (13:50):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (13:50):
We can't say that on TV? Know what coach of
the year so far is probably Mike Rape Is that fair?
Shane Stikeen like a okay, Vrabel? I think Shanahan's been unbelievable.
Does Brian Schottenheimer get in the top three or four
all things considered?
Speaker 6 (14:09):
No?
Speaker 8 (14:10):
All right, Oh, how are you making a case for him?
Speaker 6 (14:14):
They're three four and three, four and one. Don't forget
that tie against them with the.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Worst defense in the league.
Speaker 8 (14:19):
Well, the two worst defenses in the league are the
Cowboys and you know whoever's playing the Cowboys?
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Because I would say, because I think Shane Steichen's got
a much better roster than now.
Speaker 8 (14:30):
You say that, but you would not have said that
in Yeah, in August I said, I've.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Been saying it for two years that all they need
is a quarterback. I love their roster. I love the
Colts roster.
Speaker 5 (14:38):
Last year.
Speaker 8 (14:39):
You think the let's see here, I think they're running
to the Colts, right, yeah, wide receiver Cowboys by a mile.
Speaker 6 (14:46):
Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
No, No, I'm forget I'm talking Colts and Brabel. I
would give Rabel number one. I think he's doing more
with less. I would give stik In two. Shannon. I
think Kyle Shanahan's done an unbelievable job backup quarterback. Five
of his top players, Bosha out Year, Warner Hurt, who
sung a green Law. I mean I I think it's
raybel Rable's doing more with less. Stichen has more that
(15:12):
they've got the best healthiest roster, and then Seattle's got
a good coach. Tampa's got a good coach. That are
exceeding expectations dramatically. I don't think Seattle is I had
him as.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
A playoffs weren't they five and two?
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (15:24):
I had him, and I had him winning ten or
eleven games.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
I forgot you. You're so precient with your August NFL picks.
Damn damn it.
Speaker 8 (15:33):
All right, let's move on to the Baltimore Ravens. Oh
remember the story about the ping pong tables last week?
You went off on that. Yeah, so the Ravens removed
ping pong tables. Papa shot another thing. I could dominate
you in uh and video games all pulled from the
locker room. Well, Lamar told the media, guess what it
wasn't the team. I was the one who made that request.
Speaker 9 (15:54):
Told him to take all the games and ping pong,
turn the TVs off, and we could have took the
team too, But I appreciate missus Steve for putting that
enough for us, you know. But yeah, we had to focus.
I always say people don't take the job series. Don't
get me wrong, but like, I didn't feel like it
was a time for that.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
You know, we got a lot of we got a
lot of work to do.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Love that leadership capital l I love it. I love it.
So we got a lot of work to do. It's
not the time for ping pong table.
Speaker 6 (16:26):
Okay, A quick counter and I'm not Lamar. Fans settled
down before you hear this.
Speaker 8 (16:31):
So does this kind of reek of Lamar saying, hey man,
I come out and we all of a sudden stink.
You guys got to clean up your act. No TV
for you, no ping pong for you. Isn't that like
you're telling your kids, hey man, no dinner tonight. You
didn't perform well in school.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Yeah, well, I don't tell my kids that I'm sarring
my kids. No, it is what leadership isn't a popularity contest.
Leadership is anybody can be popular. That's not leadership. Leadership
is doing unpopular things that are necessary and saying guys
were no more ping pong tables, no more video games.
Love him, I mean I've always defended Lamar Jackson. I
(17:10):
love this about him. Grown up need grown ups, noo
locker room, not out there hanging around video games and
eating candy corn all.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
But maybe because Lamar stinks at ping pong he had
the tables from I don't know. Final story colin over
to college football where Bill Belichick still on the struggle
bus this season North Carolina two and five.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
They are jog water in the ACC. Here we go.
Speaker 8 (17:34):
Belichick was just remember there was a report saying Belichick
was discussing buyout options.
Speaker 6 (17:39):
He went off to the media. Take a listen to
this one.
Speaker 10 (17:43):
It's already been taken down and everything else. But it's
just a total you know, as Trump would say, fake news.
I mean, it's just I don't know, it's just a novel.
There's plenty of that out there too, by the way,
but I'm not going to deal with that and I'm
sure's a lot of other people out there that want
to get you know, clicks and fews and you know,
posts on my face or whatever, but like it's just
(18:05):
a bunch of garbage.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Well, I would say a majority of stuff on my
face is garbage. But you know, if he was winning,
the jokes are funnier when you're winning. When you're losing,
it just sounds grumpy. When you're winning, it's funny. He
used to say that all the time, snapface and my Chat.
Remember you used to say that Newing. Everybody thought that
was funny.
Speaker 6 (18:26):
It's a little old. Now.
Speaker 8 (18:27):
Hey, I'm curious, where's Jordan Hudson been since that TV
show fell apart and they started losing.
Speaker 6 (18:32):
Well, yeah, seriously, I'm not seeing a lot of her anymore.
Does she not want to hang around losers?
Speaker 1 (18:37):
No? I think she read the room and this is
not the time to be out there.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
No.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
I mean, it's the thing what we've learned. There's two
things we've learned about college football coaching since Nil arrived.
You can't load at Colorado LSU USC you're gonna have
all the money in the world. You can't have a roster.
And this is Carolina two of sixty percent transfers. It
(19:04):
ruins chemistry. You're gonna miss on too many guys. It's
going to create animosity in the room. And I think
one of the things with Belichick of the things that
haven't gone right, they spent a lot of money on
a lot of players and they didn't hit on them.
And I think I think the transfer portal two things
can be true. I like it, and it should be
used with discretion. And the number I always come back to.
(19:28):
I talked to a coach about this. He said, about
seven to eight guys a year. He goes, everybody needs
a corner. Every year he goes, it's a shortage of corners.
He goes, if you can find a receiver that blocks,
you know, an interior offensive lineman who's a smart guy.
Got one year. Lady goes, you know, kickers, there's things
that people can owe. Another good slot corner, you know
(19:50):
another you know, another receiver who can get physical downfield
and block another running back right like the third or
fourth running back. What happens with the transfer portal. North
Carolina tried to set their starting lineups with a transfer portal, like, hey,
we're gonna go get starters I think the underrated part
of the transfer portal is not everybody's a star. You
(20:14):
get guys that add depth. Now again, if you can
go get Caleb Downs, you're Ohio State by all means,
or a star quarterback Caleb Williams, then go get them.
But by and large, I think a lot of it
is just adding less expensive, less animosity, just adding depth
at key positions, offensive tackle, corner, wide receiver that blocks
(20:37):
a lot of them don't so. I think Indiana has
done it well. They've hit on the guys. They've brought
in Jmack with the news.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping that, the
herd line news.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
You know what, it is interesting right now? The Packers
are as good as anybody in the NFL. Kansas City,
Green Bay very good. Toronto looks like they're going to
up end the Dodgers. You know, Indianapolis culture on fire.
The New York football teams are a mess. Chicago can't
(21:12):
get it right. Here's Kansas City once again getting it right.
It is remarkable to me that we worry so much
about the money and the market size. Best team in
the NBA, Oklahoma City, best team in the NFL, Kansas
City and Green Bay. Now Toronto's obviously in North America,
a very large city, but they're over and under was
(21:34):
in the mid seventy wins Dodgers like one five, one
oh six. So it's been a very good last several
years for underdogs. Underdogs and small markets are doing very
very well. Is it because I don't know. I don't
have a theory behind it, But there's so much money
in sports. Are medium and smaller markets more disciplined. It's
(21:57):
like the book The Millionaire next Door. How many school
teachers are millionaire because they're smarter with their money. They
don't have excess money. They pay their house off, they
pay their cars off. I feel like when you get
into these big cities you get often very wealthy owners.
Not always bears owners aren't very wealthy, but you often
get more ego, richer owners. The media is harder, creating
(22:20):
more impulsive moves. They're more chaotic. I mean, Green Bay,
everybody's on board, Kansas City, everybody's on board. You can
hide a little bit in Denver, you can hide a
little bit in Baltimore. It just I mean, there was
a report last night that the clubhouse for the Blue Jays.
It was like spring training. There's no pressure. They've trailed
(22:42):
four times in the playoffs. There's no pressure for the
Blue Jays. There's enormous pressure. Oh, Tani Freeman bets Dodgers.
You wrap it up next to Herd.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in neonon Easter non am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
You know, it's it is so funny, like sometimes you
just have to admit, like with Patrick Mahomes, you just
got to admit he's better than your quarterback. You didn't
have to be as big or as strong, but you know,
you can fight the current in life or like for
years and years and years, it's like, well, Brady's a
system quarterback, and I'm like, no, Brady is the system
(23:26):
and the quarterback, and Belichick can't win games when he leaves.
Patrick Mahomes is just different. And Greg co Sail I've
never heard him say this to He's been on with
me ten years, was talking earlier, gushing over the magic
of Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 11 (23:42):
He'll leave throws on the field and then he'll run
around and make a play and it's just those are
the kinds of things when you watch him, you go,
I wonder how they deal with that. Do they just
say great play, Patrick, or do they say, hey, we
had this play design and you didn't throw it, and
you know, next time throw it. I don't know how
they deal with that. But he just has an uncanny
(24:02):
ability that is arguably the best we've ever seen.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Yeah, he's got I always there's a spatial awareness that
Greg talked about that The first thing I noticed with
Mahomes the first thing that was really obvious, and it
was from a camera in the end zone. So I
this was years ago. It was like four or five,
six years ago. There was a camera in the end
zone and they showed a replay and I yeah, it
(24:28):
was like a Sunday night game and they showed Patrick
Mahomes throwing the ball and it was This has happened
to me so many times where I've just seen a
play and I'm like, oh, wow, wow, wow, wow wow,
that's different. And he saw the receiver and it wasn't
wide open right, and he had the ball out of
(24:48):
his hands in half a second. His ability to see
it and get the ball out accurately, so much of
this league is quarterbacks throwing it late. Either they don't
don't identify it, don't throw people open, or they just
take an extra beat. Mahomes, it's it's very Merino see it,
(25:10):
and it's not terribly open. See it ball out, So
that gives you the highest percentage chance to get a
completion that you get. You see it, I mean one
thought boom quarter second faster than the average quarterback. Now,
sometimes you're throwing guys open, the cornerback turns or you
(25:33):
know you you're kind of it's the estimate, the guestimate,
like you're not always throwing to an open guy. And
he had a couple of picks. Patrick will throw his picks.
It's the opposite with Caleb Williams, who on the interception
Greg Kosell talked about he was a little late on
that interception from his end zone. He was not only late,
he was two beats late. So Mahomes is never a
(25:56):
beat late. He's never been two beats late. But overall,
Greg said he was actually impressed with Caleb.
Speaker 11 (26:03):
I look for playing with excellent timing and rhythm within
structure because that's really what the Ben Johnson offense is,
and Caleb at his core is not a true natural
timing anticipation player, so it's going to be baby steps.
And I think there were some signs of positive plays
this week, some snapshots where I said, as I was
(26:26):
watching the tape, that's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Yeah. And I think the thing about Caleb, there are
three things that he's doing now. I like, very good
on the opening drive. Therefore, he's coachable, he's not stubborn. Secondly,
he's developed a real relationship with Romadunze, the young receiver
out of Washington. That's clear. The other thing, and you
see some of it here, is when he does run,
you know he's getting down. He's cut his sacks in half.
(26:52):
So like this play is a great example. That play,
there's not three guys in the league that can do that. Mahomes,
Josh Allen can do that. That may be the list. CJ. Stroud,
I don't know if he can throw off his back
foot that play. Maybe he can't. But Caleb this year
has had the longest time to throw this season. Who's
(27:13):
got the quickest, Patrick Mahomes. And it's not like three
different seconds, it's like a second. So Mahomes, to my point,
is able to see something and the ball is out
of his hands immediately faster than anybody I've ever seen.
Caleb can see it, waits a beat, lets it go.
(27:36):
He's got the slowest time, and I'm not sure if
it's a second that separates him so much. It's probably
not half second. I mean that, I mean literally, it's
a half a second. Just think about the NFL. Patrick's
the fastest at like two and a half seconds. Caleb's
the slowest at three. That is the difference between interception
(27:59):
complete superstardom and met So when I hear about these
college guys, Oh, he's great from the pocket. How long
do you get a throat Alabama? Four beats? Yet two
in the NFL? How open are your guys at Alabama
or you know, Ohio State or Michigan, JJ McCarthy wide open?
(28:20):
Do you have a great run game? Are you playing
from behind? Are you playing with the lead? All that stuff?
In the NFL, you're plan from behind? Matt Stafford's playing
from behind? Was Sean McVay as a coach right the Ravens,
the Bills, I mean Philadelphia? Your plan from behind? Your
run game doesn't work. Everything at these major programs is
(28:42):
comfort an extra beat or two receivers more wide open.
He's a five star receiver. I mean, if it was
just as easy as finding a five star high school kid,
he goes to Ohio State or LSU, and then he
goes to the NFL. Think about all the quarterbacks. Think
about the legends in recent years, Philip Rivers, NC State,
(29:03):
Eli Manning, Ole miss Aaron Rodgers, Cow, Matt Ryan BC
Big Ben Miami of Ohio. I mean, it's a lot
of these guys. Patrick Mahome, Texas Tech, Josh Allen Wyoming.
It is almost as a rule, the guys in comfort
programs struggle. The guys that get an extra beat and
(29:25):
have five star receivers that are more wide open, as
a rule, they struggle more. And on. Caleb Williams at
USC did not have a great old line, but he
had a great play call and very very good receivers
Jordan Addison for a year. USC has always got good receivers.
They got a couple more this year. So yeah, the
difference between Mahomes and Caleb this year, Patrick, let's go
with the ball at two point six seconds fastest in
(29:46):
the league. Caleb, let's go at three point one slowest.
I mean, just the league is crazy. It's absolutely crazy.
We can throw up the schedule one more time. I
do like the Bears this weekend. I think they're going
to beat I think this is a good spot. I
said last weekend I thought was a terrible spot for Chicago.
Lamar was going to be back Baltimore at home against
(30:08):
NFC teams. Baltimore has to win bad spot for the Bears.
The Bears are in a different spot here. Cincinnati is
a bad defense. The last time Chicago played a defense
that wasn't good at was Dallas and they moved the
chains so longer drives. The Bears defense, which is playmaking
but not really that good. We'll have longer periods on
(30:31):
the sidelines. You're going to find a Bear team that's
going to extend drives. The defense will be on the
field less. Chicago at Cincinnati is a very very good
matchup for the Bears. Baltimore was a even with Tyler
Huntley was a terrible matchup for the Bears.
Speaker 8 (30:46):
By the way, update, Joe Flacco's scene at practice today.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
We don't know how much he's participating.
Speaker 8 (30:51):
We'll get that officially soon, but Jake Browning would be
an auto play on the Bears, right, I mean Jake
Brownie can't.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
He couldn't do anything at quarterback. And I think you're right.
Speaker 8 (31:00):
The Swift ground game and the other kid, Kyle's last
thing starts with the nam mahogany whatever it is.
Speaker 6 (31:06):
He's pretty good. I got him on my fantasy team.
You just ground and pound priests.
Speaker 8 (31:09):
Hall went nuts against the Bengals and the Jets don't
even have a good run game, so I think Ben
Johnson opens things up.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
I like the Bears.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Almost all young quarterbacks need a run game. I mean
that's why Sean Payton people say why is he getting
a running back in the second round? And JK Dobbins.
Almost all young quarterbacks need a run game. DeAndre Swift
couldn't run it. They couldn't muster a run game against Baltimore,
(31:37):
struggled against Dallas, he could so Veteran quarterbacks can largely
live without a great run game all the time. I mean,
Dak Prescott's gonna win double digits with or without a
great run game. He has for years and years. Once
Zeke was out of his prime. Guys like Dak, Guys
like Mahomes, Guys like they can win games without a
(31:57):
great run game. The guys that just I mean it
was last year. Was it Joe Mixon or somebody got
hurt for the Texans. They didn't have a ground game
and c J. Stroud regressed badly. So I think once
you get into your third and fourth and fifth year,
you're not as beholden to having a great run game.
But Denver is a great example. They went and got JK.
Dobbins and Harvey and that is what bo Nicks needs.
(32:21):
You can live without it. Caleb's still in the space
in his career a run game is it feels like
it's a must have.
Speaker 8 (32:28):
A Couple things to watch, Colin. This is one of
the final weeks before the trade deadline. Any team that
you see gets blasted and looks like they're gonna pack
it in. Keep an eye on them making some moves.
If the Dolphins get work tonight, I think they trade
two or three guys. Jayleen Waddle, Oh, now that would
be a big move. He would help a contender for sure,
(32:49):
for sure. First things first, Romcorn
