(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Greetings and welcome inside
the final hours night of The Jason Smith Show with
my bass friend Mike Harmon. Oh where boy do we
got a fun one right now? Eighth inning in San Diego,
Dodgers and the Padres tied at three apiece. Justin Turner
(00:44):
just drove in the game tying run for the Dodgers.
Uh as they are still batting, two outs top of
the eighth and a runner and scoring position. Again, Dodgers
and Padres three three in this game. And clearly I
wish we had these games a little have been after
the NBA playoffs because this is Look, this is the rivalry.
Major League Baseball wants to say, Hey, stay up late
(01:05):
watch these games. Right Well, we got Yankees Red Sox
the weekend, so you got that going for Yeah, yeah,
Yankees Red Sox, and this is the new Yankees Red Sox.
That's what we have, that's what we got going on.
Padre has taken the first two games in the series.
Tonight was Trevor Bower's night. Probably we heard I saw
some rumors that he had something really fun planned for
when the umpires were gonna examine him after the first hitting.
(01:27):
But probably because he gave up two home runs in
the first inting, he wasn't in the mood like a dugout. Okay,
just check me. That's fine to get up two home runs.
I'm not happy. Yeah, I would suspect any of the chicaganery,
Like if you'd go on one to three, I think
that was it. Right, you strike out the side, then hey,
you're you're in a jokey mood. You can have some
fun and let's face it, then you own the new
(01:49):
news cycle lot of baseball. I mean, that would be
bigger than the hat. Oh. I don't know he had it.
I mean if he had something big, nothing big. I mean,
remember he's in Hollywood now, so he's got to come out,
come strong with some kind of presentation. But dude, they
come on a picture because caught with something on his
hat the umpires didn't like, and the hat got thrown
(02:10):
out and he got to stay. I mean, that's like
cruelty to an inanimate object. I think that's some kind
of that, that's some kind of meatalty that the umpire.
I feel like we need to wake John Paul Morossi
up and say, hey, JP, I know we talked to
you a little bit earlier, but what the hell is this?
I really I don't understanding to me, like I'm a
(02:32):
five year old. Please, Yeah, if the Michael Scott explained
it to me like I'm five again, Diego Stillo comes
into the game and there's something on his hat the
umpires don't like. No suspension, No throwing out of the
game is what it's supposed to happen. No, No No, because
Major League Baseball doesn't know what they're doing. Do you
think they spend him in the aftermath of this thing?
They might have, like, I mean, but like he didn't
(02:52):
get tossed. Yeah, but come in and pitch already. It
makes it makes absolutely no sense. Right. But again, as
I argued last hour, Major League Baseball, when Manford and
company get in front of something they don't. They come
at it from obliquely. It's like, I think we caught
like thirty of it. That's good enough, we addressed it.
(03:14):
Why are we doing this right? Why why is baseball
doing this? If they're not going to follow through on
this is what we got to get rid of this.
We're gonna suspend you now, We're not gonna We're just
gonna throw the hat out of the game. I mean really, Umm,
more candidates here before you get back. Yeah, bucks here,
Harry says on Twitter that says this is why hats
need a union. Oh unfair treatment of a hat. Sure
(03:36):
you get some good Hi. I'm Lanley Lyle Lanley, and
I'm here before you. I mean they need they need
some kind of union and someone needs to represent them.
You know, we both have pretty sizeable domes. You can
do that. I'm seven and three quarter. I'm officially said,
I'm down from seven and seven eights, like you know
the last few months. You know, I've lost a little
bit of weight, a little bit. I'm down like from
(03:56):
seven and seven eights and seven and three quarters. Now,
that's pretty good. I'm pretty happy with that. Uh Cam says, wait,
they just made him change hats. Shouldn't they at least
make him pitch without a hat, so he feels self
conscious now that I like, it's like the scarlet. But
he might have Your League Baseball. Yeah, but he might
have some kind of product in his hair that then
gives him an advantage. Well, then they then they shave
(04:19):
his head about that head hopefully. Umpire comes walking out.
He's reaching into his belt. What's heat? What's he doing?
Oh my god, he's lost the hair match. It's a
Narelco Razor, official partner of Major League Baseball. They just
put a chair down in the outfield and he sits down.
(04:39):
He puts like one of those bibs on that you
wear when you get a haircut. Umpired just shaving his
head will be ready a couple of minutes. Hang on,
he could come into the game a little bit. Just
wait a second. The bibs branded with the logo of
the home team, So then he can say, and now available,
you know, for all barber shops and and salons that
are back open, show your team Colors seven Market Merching. Yeah. Yeah.
(05:04):
Tonight's mid game shave, brought to you by Narrelko, the
closest shave you can get instilled pitching Major League Baseball.
We'll be back right after this. They go to a
commercial break for three minutes, a gun back and they're
cleaning up. The guy comes out with you know, with
the broom and just sweeping the hair out so nobody
trips and falls on it. We're gonna shave guys. You've
(05:26):
got something in your hair, that's what it is. And
then there could be pictures going, I don't want to
get a shaved head. You can't pitch in the game.
Then okay, I'm not gonna lose my hair. I'm not
gonna keep my hair. My hair is more valuable to
me and more important, So I'm gonna keep my hair.
You guys can put somebody else in the game to
go pitch. I'm keeping my hair. Wow, that would be
that would be next level right there. Just think about dudes,
stay in the game or yeah, or get a ten
(05:51):
game suspension and keep your hair. Although right now, for me,
because I've been shaving my head now for like fifteen years,
i gotta say that, Oh, if I could keep my
hair and I'd serve a ten game suspension, I'd have
to think about that. It wouldn't be automatical. I'm gonna
do it. No, I canna think about that. But no,
it's good. There was a good moment from Bauer earlier
in the game. Uh, Joe Musgrove swung through and lost
his bat, so Bauer walked to the back of the mound,
(06:13):
grabbed rosin bag. He's like, hey, you need some of this.
That's Trevor Bower. He also walked off after you know,
getting you know, uh, playing to the crowd after a
strikeout to end nitting. So it wasn't it wasn't all
non Trevor Bauer personality. He said, no, no, no, no,
the agitator is always gonna be there. I mean, come on,
because he's like a great w w e heel. He's
(06:35):
he's embracing it and I love every second of it.
So if any more hats get thrown out of games,
to night will tell you if anymore whatever you need,
we got you. Any of goals or any of the
greatest scorer in soccer right now, uh, missing two point
blank headers? You know, any of those things we got
(06:56):
you covered. Yeah, where your show for that? Where the
show of record for that? But tonight watching the Hawks
beat the Bucks one sixteen one thirteen. One of the
big things that that the NBA is not fighting against
right now, but they kind of have an opportunity with
Lebron James not being in the playoffs, some other big
stars not being in the playoffs. Hey, who can we
(07:18):
get over as the next great, big superstar at the NBA.
And there's three candidates that clearly it could belong to,
and that's the Honest and Devin Booker and potentially Trey
Young depending on how this series go. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on
(07:39):
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. What
about DeAndre Ayton and the value? Hey, dude, I'd love
for to DeAndre man. He's great, but you're you're talking
about being a superstar and and at the each other
out quickly. They got those shirts up, they did, they
did they well. T shirts happened fast. But they had
their their their designer and they had them up by
time we finished show. Yeah, but I could I could
(08:02):
have you know, designer, I could say, Hey, how about
a designer T shirt with Costillo's hat with a free
hat logo on there and it will be done in
like five minutes. I'd be pretty coming. I mean there
there's plenty of folks looking to pick up a little
bit of extra scratch. So let's find some some folks
with some graphic interface. We're giving him skills, Go ahead,
(08:22):
take him. But if if these are the stars that
the NBA needs to get over, there is clearly one
that's going to help the league more than any and
that's Janice, right Not because Janice and and Is is
a a bigger clutch player or you know, he's a
different kind of player than Trey Young and Devin Booker,
but these players are still known by the average to
(08:47):
rabid NBA fans, right Yannest, even though he's won the
m v P, he's still an NBA fan player. He's
not what the which is who's your next star that
is bigger than the game? And lebron On has been
bigger than the game for a while and Janice can
be that guy. And that's why the NBA needs him
to get onto the finals. And even if they don't
(09:08):
win the title, he at least get him to the
finals because he's gonna be the guy that fosters the
most discussion right that their careers are going on the
same exact path. Lebron playing in the Midwest comes into
the game and and it's clearly with more fanfare and
there's nobody that's gonna have the Lebron impact. But we
watched him and his efforts of getting to the NBA
(09:29):
Finals was a really big deal. Along the way, Lebron
was very polarizing both on and off the court because
of the way he came into the league. He was overrated,
He's gonna be a big superstar. And still now we
have the same conversations. Lebron's overrated, He's the biggest superstar
we have. But whatever he does is compelling. The NBA
is Lebron James. But Lebron's thirty six. And even now
(09:50):
when he gets to the finals, you still have those conversations.
Who's the only other guy in the league that we
have those conversations about? Janice is the honest great? Is
he overrated? Is he a one? Is he a one? A?
Can Yannice win a title? Is it Janice's fault when
the Bucks win in the playoffs? Is it not his fault?
When the game started tonight, I told you no matter
(10:11):
what happens at the end of this game, it's gonna
come down to did Janice do enough at the end?
Is it his blame that they lose? Was it to
his credit that they won. That's what every game comes
down to, because Janice has that polarity, uh built in
where there's many people on Janice's and Janice's camp go
and this guy is great and look at what he does.
(10:31):
He's the most talented player in the game when you
when you talk about pure talent, He's got it more
than anybody. And then there's uh, Janice, really, isn't that good?
Yannest needs somebody else beside him. You can't go to
him all the time in the clutch. He doesn't make
free throws like he should. Janice is that polarizing now,
not off the court like Lebron is, because Janice is
clearly and on the court guy right now. And maybe
as his career goes on he gets more comfortable talking
(10:53):
and doing things outside of basketball, But right now that's
who he is, and the NBA needs him to move
on because he's guy they can get over. He's a
guy that can go from Hey, the average NBA fan
and the rabbit. NBA fan knows him to being the
average sports fan wants to watch the finals or get
involved with it on social media, or follow it or
drive the discussion because he can be that player and
(11:17):
the other guys. Look, if Devin Booker has a great finale,
Devin Booker is great. Right. If Trey Young has a
great player, right, Trey Young is great. If if Trey
Young goes six for three and the and the Suns
lose a game, are we spending a lot of time saying, boy,
that's Trey Young's fault. We're not. If Devin Booker has
a bad game at the end of we're spending the
entire time saying, hey, Devin Booker missed those four shots.
(11:38):
He's terrible. Man, he's overrated. We're not. They're just not
those players that you say things about. But Janice is.
And when you have so much of a discrepancy of
an opinion over a star player, you need him in
front of as many eyeballs as you can get. So
that's why if the NBA is saying, hey, who's the
star they want to get over, They want the Bucks
in the finals because it's about Janice And no matter
(11:59):
what happens, win or lose. He's gonna be the player
that the league points up and says, this is the
guy we wants you to pay attention to. This is
the guy we want you to care about if they
win or lose. This is the guy we want you
to weigh in on if you think it's his fault
or not, because he drives the discussion more so than
any other player. Lebron is not in the playoffs, So
who's the next best possibility? It's be honest, well, I
(12:20):
think there's certainly that right a couple of m vps,
so people are waiting for that next step, the playoff
wins and getting to the conference finals. Okay, that's good start.
Now you gotta get over and the expectations are certainly larger,
and he's been on the stage for a lot longer.
So it's the are you going to be the next
(12:40):
guy or not? You know, it's the pick your your
favorite reality show, singers, comedians, jugglers, whatever, we're choosing here,
and Janice is now on center stage to try to
take that next step, and his resume will be called
in question once again if he fails. I would argue
(13:04):
to some degree because he's the known commodity, right, so
there's already a formed opinion on him and Trey Young,
except if you're a big basketball fan, basketball card collector,
or fantasy basketball player slash better, Maybe Trey Young's a
guy you're just getting to know a little bit, so
you have the newness factor, but you also have a
(13:26):
huge media market and a guy who in a lot
of ways not full on because he's a better point guard.
I'll continue to argue that Steph Curry is a shooting
guard that is put at point guard because of his size.
But it's the the idea that Trey Young can get
a little bit of the Steph Curry treatment if he
(13:47):
were to win, especially when he's scoring thirty five a night. Right,
So you know people are getting captivated and why is
the smaller dude? Right? Once again, And once you start
getting into those six ten and over guys, you know,
it's hard hard for like, it's hard for me to
relate to the six foot guys, but it's hard to
relate to those seven foot guys. And so you know,
(14:10):
while you have it built in for Johann, it's just
based on you know, folks with formed opinions and yes,
show me something. Trey Young also has the opportunity, I
think in that regard to to get over based on
the market Twitter and how about a Fresca Mike gets
swollen Dome the Jason Smith Show with my best friend
(14:31):
Mike Harmon and look, I'd love for Trey Young to
get over. I'd love for but it's it's kind of
too early for him. I think it's early for him.
I think it's early for Devin Booker. Yeahs, the the
better resume he's got, the he's got a little bit
more popularity, and that all he needs is just a bang.
Here he is on the biggest stage and people get
to see what he does and see his talent level,
and here the conversation to go, yeah, this guy needs
(14:53):
to be doing more. I feel like it's quicker for that,
you know, you because you got you got the as
you said, the polarization of the player, right, there's still
things that he can't do at this point in his career,
at least consistently. So there there's always that question of,
you know, has he developed the skill set enough and
if not, then you get to torch him. And of

Let's sen to the Fifth Hour with Ben Mallow on
the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you
get your podcast, Fox Sports Radio, the Jason Smith Show
with my base friend Mike Harmon. You Aaron Rodgers, as
we just watch the Padres beat the Dodgers again, five three,
(16:36):
aller Pool's lining into a double play, ending the game
for the Dodgers. And I'll tell you it's a shame
that we don't see these teams play again to August,
because it has been some kind of run. The Padres
win these three games here and and this shows you
that in baseball this season, if you think that the
Dodges are gonna run away and be the overwhelming best
team and all these things happening, uh, they're slogging out
(16:58):
right now with two teams that are really good. The
Padres are really good. They get up for the Dodgers.
The Giants that you thought, well, eventually they're gonna start losing,
they're not, alright. The Giants have the best record in baseball.
They're playing terrific. They're not going anywhere. This is gonna
be a three team fight. And suddenly it's not just
a fad, a complete The Dodgers are making the playoffs.
(17:20):
It's gonna be it's gonna be a slog fester for them,
which is natural because after you win the World Series
and have the level of excellence that Dodges have had,
Clearly the the regular season doesn't have the same kind
of meaning. But you would expect in the West, all right,
well they'll be at the top, one of the top
two teams, and here they are. Now, hey, things are
getting difficult for them. There's three really good teams now.
Always like a little bit of chaos because you don't
(17:41):
want it to be a straight line to two expectations.
But still forty four and thirties, some injured players on
the comeback trail. Here Bellinger as they celebrate a bobble
head that will be coming out here in short order,
you know, his return from a couple of months miss.
So always the curiosity at this point in the season,
(18:02):
you know how aggressive at the trade deadline and what
the next steps are. But yeah, it's gonna be a
fun race for the first time in a in a
long while. And so for Dodger fans. Yeah, our guy
Burshon is Dodger Podcast, our executive producer Justin Frostberg, who
I think bleeds Dodger Blue and both the show. Yeah
there there's as coined by Ben Maller. Of course Bo Betson,
(18:27):
one of our other producers. I mean, the three of
them are gripping, there's no question about it. But but
it makes for uh, for us on air and certainly nationwide.
You know, you like to have a little bit of
an obstacle thrown up in some questions and and force
the issue. So uh yeah, creativity at the deadline, you know,
which tripe, which superstar can they bring in without getting
(18:49):
rid of a top prospect this year? About that, Let's see,
let's see what they can pull off this time. Well hey, well,
speaking of superstars here, you know, we watch this game.
It didn't come back to haunt them because they end
up winning the game. But tonight Fernando Tatis Jr. Made
his sixteenth error of the season. And for a guy
who's gonna be the face of baseball and everything, he's done. Look,
he's second in the league in ops. He is fun,
(19:11):
he is everywhere. He struck out tonight against Trevor Bauer,
but he gave him the nod and that was right,
Like that was a good pitch. I mean, he's fantastic,
but sixteen errors at shortstop, alright? That he he is.
He is on pace to commit forty errors this season.
All right. Usually the people who lead the league in
(19:31):
errors this year, and these are league leaders, and errors
are between twenty two and twenty seven. And he's gonna
wind up close to forty errors this season. I don't
know that he's going to be a shortstop after this year.
It's gonna be too tough to make the change this year.
You're gonna ruin his confidence. But you get to the
playoffs and you get a couple of plays where boy,
that error turned a win into a loss. He's gonna
(19:53):
be in a different position next season. You can't go
forward with him and and and say Okay, we're okay
with forty errors out of our shortstop be because it
just hasn't gotten better. You know, he came back. He
this is kind of who he is, the way he plays,
and it's really not conducive to be in a full
time shortstop. Well, you know what, I think, retroactively for
the good of baseball that Rob Manford could avoid that
(20:14):
trade from the White Sox thereby bringing Tatis back and
they can find him some at bats as a d
H so he doesn't have to play the field. How
about that? Good lad? You got to look at you know,
behind him in the outfield. Does he go the first
base man? There's it's a curious you know, because you
gotta look at how many runs it costs. But it
becomes more stressful innings and all of those things, and
(20:37):
you know that the advanced metrics start to really go
against keeping him at that position. You're gonna do that
to Eric Costmer? Wow, I can't believe that he is
never going to talk to you. It brought me back.
Fernando Tatis Twitter and out about Afresca. Mike gets swollen
