Speaker 2 (00:21):
This is the best of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Radio thirty years ago. Today, Nightmare Before Christmas, Happy Anniversary.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
In say, Friday the thirteenth, Happy Haunting.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon Live from
the Tirec dot Com studios Tysher apparently is gonna have
every non Friday the thirteenth horror movie drop. Yeah, it's
Friday the thirteenth. Much sense. Yeah, I'm gonna use Saw.
I'm gonna use all it's the crazy stuff. Yeah, I'm
not gonna have thirteenth all right.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Speaking with my older daughter, did go see the new
Saw movie? Really? Enjoyed it?

Speaker 1 (01:07):
We saw ten really?

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Oh? Okay, I thought it was pretty good. Has you
seen or themselves?

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Oh? One of those private screenings.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
I love that, know I shelled out for private screening
unless I didn't. And today she's with all the throng
of lunatics watching the Taylor Swift Show with her little sister.
So I can't wait for the report on that later.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
So Mike and I do it every week. We give
you our upset special picks for the week one and one,
last week six and four on the season, I was
so close getting both of them. Did my upseick special.
I'm gonna get back at it right now with the
Texans getting to over the Saints.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Nobody loves the Texans more than you.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
We are not talking about CJ. Stroud enough. We're just not.
It's like, oh but Bright's young and here's nothing. Yeah, boys,
see the Stroud's good. C J. Stroud is everything you
would want from a rookie quarterback, right. You watch the guy.
He is fearless, he is accurate over the middle. I mean,
this is a guy is he's a leader. All his
teammates saying incredible things about him. He's everything you want

(02:09):
in a quarterback. I said, ah, well, Bryce Young is
and this guy that no. CJ. Stroud is that guy.
He is smart, He is making the NFL look easy,
and he's on a team without a lot of weapons
and a team that can't run the football. Every week,
Damian Pierce is twenty five carries for thirty eight yards,
and still the Texans were just a couple of plays
away from being four and one. Texans are better to

(02:32):
be go. Ryan's a good coach, and I'm giving c J.
Stroud getting a couple of points. I'm not gonna beat
the points, but I'll still take him Houston plus two
over the Saints.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Look at you every opportunity you're got. Tank Dell's banged up, though,
so for fantasy hits, I wish if you keep an
eye on that one as you got for last blush.
I have not seen an updated line on this one,
but the Vikings were two and a half point favorites
on the road at Chicago forty four and half your
total Bears offense starting to click a little bit. It

(03:04):
looks like we're down to the eighty seventh running back
and that's Dante Forman, a former Texan, So you got
to be excited looking for Darnel Mooney to be active
in the passing game. Early and often, they tried a
few times last week didn't connect. It was the DJ
Moore Show against the Minnesota secondary. They will have their
success and Jason will be one step closer to trying

(03:25):
to lure Kirk Cousins to New York, New Jersey.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Captain Captain, Captain, Captain Kirk Kirk Kirk, I never do that,
Captain kopt them like.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Once a year. So there it is.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
My second upset special. Give me the Colts getting five
against the Jaguars. You're talking with the Jaguars, Come on,
I mean, look, I know that, you know they played
in their second home last week, but now coming back,
this is a division game, and these games are always close.
AFC South games are close, and Gardner minshew is always

(03:58):
always keeps it close. He well enough, they're gonna miss
Anthony Richardson for a while, but now you have Zach Moss,
who's a huge weapon. Another week to get Jonathan Taylor
immersed in it. This is gonna be closer than you think.
I like the Jaguars, buy a field goal, but give
me the Colts and the five. This one of those
cases Mike Wora say, hey, give me the Colts and five.
I'll take every single point you want. To give me

(04:18):
because they may not do it on the field, But
give me the Colts in this one, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
I like the receivers and Minshew with his willingness to
put the ball up in Harm's way. I'm going nostalgia
here and I'm taking the creamsicles. Getting three at home
against Detroit, Gibbs is out. You still have some injury
issues in the receiving corps. I'm gonna look got Baker
Mayfield and Company coming off of the Buyer. We keep

(04:42):
an eye on Mike Evans, but I think there's enough
defensively to vex Jared Goff. So there it is.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Our upset special picks for the week. In the NFL exit,
how about a Fresca exit Swalling Dome? Jameson Smith, Mike
Harmon Live. That's IRAQ dot Com Studios. Coming up next,
we have a big time NFL preview. We're Isaac when
you think I'm gonna zag and one rookie quarterback on
the cusp of being a one and done. Wait a minute,
what that's next? Right here? This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
It's a Halloween rema under Let's go. Michael Myers in
the middle of the dance floor with his hand up
in the air and everybody's dancing around him, jumping up. Yeah,
he nod on your head. He just starts stabbing people.
It doesn't matter. The blood is Fit's like. The Fit's
like that scene from Blade in the beginning when they're
all dancing in the club and all the blood is it.
He's just stabbing everybody. People are handing him drinks, he's

(05:44):
doing shots and then throwing him back at people. I
like the way you think, Oh, that's a Jeff right there.
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon,
Live from the Tireraq dot com studios. A big day
in college football tomorrow USC Notre Dame is not the
game of the day. Oh we'll get to that. Joining

(06:06):
us on the hotline helps break it all down. He
is the owner, editor, proprietor Grand Puba of College Footballnews
dot com. You are one stop shopping for everything you
need college football, all the breakdown, all the analysis. He
is on Twitter at Pete feu tech. It is Pete futech.
What's happening, bud.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Well, Colorado's on, So we are not stopping everything we're
doing so we can watch.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
This, No, because Dion's very upset that it's on in
this late window, so he would just rather not be
playing the game.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
Seriously, Well, if you don't need to watch, because literally
I've gotten four alerts on my phone that Colorado like,
you know, ate a sandwich or something in the last
five minutes.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah, it's.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Realistic. What's what's wacky about this? And well, this is
you know professional segue into more important Pact welve stuff.
Is that, Look, this is kind of a big deal
because all the hype and for all the craziness. Look
at the rest of Colorado's schedule. It'll win tonight if
it doesn't beat Arizona. It's not going bowling because it
ain't beaten Utah Ucla and you know the other great

(07:14):
teams on the schedule, so very least it's going to
be the underdog in every game except for Arizona. So
you imagine after all this, they don't go to a bowl,
which is very possible if Arizona rises up in the Rocks.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Oh wow, you are. So you are not a believer,
then I could put you in the non believer status
because a believer non believer, you're non believer.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Well, a believer in what there is a great turnaround,
it's a great year, but their defense just isn't good.
It so happened to be playing Sanford, who isn't good
at football. But no, I'm a fan said this before.
I mean you literally in the closet right over there,
there's an old school Dion jersey from a million years ago,

(07:53):
which I don't wear because the grown mentioned more jerseys.
But uh yeah, I'm a fan. But they're just you know,
they'll be better next year, let's put it that way.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Stuff playing over the public address speaker system while Stanford's
going to snap the ball, so you had to stop that.
I had to turn it off as soon as the
announcers while a Colorado defender stood over an opponent made
a kind of a slashing gesture to his neck or
whatever said I don't see what the penalty is, Like

(08:22):
I've done with Jones in the house.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah you can't do that if you're bright Harper either,
But okay, but I digress, But I digress.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Moving on to the game, Jason and I chopped it
up a little bit earlier. Offense the days stats all
over the place Pete Viewtech, Washington, Oregon sixty six and
a half as the total. I called it a giant bucket,
bucket of wings, and bottle of bourbon kind of game,
because that's how enjoyable it'll be.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
I hope. So I hope we're getting a wild and
crazy game where you have two NFL quarterbacks and two
great offenses going out there essentially the same, the difference
being that Oregon really and again I don't mean to,
I really don't mean to keep doing in Colorado, but
I will. If you look at Oregon, there's a high
chance that they haven't played a team that's going to

(09:12):
go bowling. I mean, they're they've been great, but now
we finally get to see them open it up against
the team that can really hang with them on both sides.
And it just depends can you get to Michael Pennix
Junior or not, because that style of passing game that
they have gets the ball out of his hands in
a hurry, and the offensive line has been great, and

(09:32):
so when you give him any time to hit those
downfield shots, forget it. Oregon's got a great running game,
Washington's got Pennis Junior. I'm sheepishly going with Washington because
it's home at home.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
But you're right.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
I mean, I'm this is this might be the first
to two, and certainly these two for future Big tenors
are going to put on a big time show them all.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Dete if I said to you right now, agree or disagree,
regardless of ranking, Oregon and Washington might be the best
two teams in college football right now.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Nah, No, not, They're not there. I mean again, they
never really look at their schedules. They've been good, but look,
Washington kind of sputtered a little at Arizona. I mean,
they haven't really played, you know, a whole bunch of
coming at Michigan State, I guess, I mean, but that
was right after the Mel Tucker stuff. No, I mean, honestly,
the crazy part about all this is it's kind of

(10:24):
if you really want to look at who the four
actual best teams are, when it's all said done, it's
Georgia and three teams in the Big Ten East. That's
everyone else is sort of just the half click behind
all that.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Pete. The other game obviously with us being in southern California,
everybody looking at USC and the excitement traveling to Notre Dame.
Notre Dame a slight favorite Hartman coming off the five
turnover game. But as we know, USC has an allergy
to defense.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
Yeah, and look, not only an allergy of defense, but
go the over on this because look that defense also
has not got to Again, I keep going with this team,
but it's kind of crazy this time of year. They
haven't played anybody who's a sure thing to go bowling.
I mean, their schedule like San Jose State and Stanford,
and you know, Arizona's not a sure thing. Again, Colorado's

(11:15):
not a sure thing. I mean, it's not like they're
going up against outside of Colorado a whole SLT of
high octane teams. And they're still giving up what twenty
four points the bad Arizona State team? So then yeah,
so how is Notre Dame not getting off the bus
with at least thirty something points? I can't get past it.
It's still thirteen still, Caleb Williams, And you thought in

(11:37):
the Arizona game where when they didn't wake up And again,
as I've said before and here USC's got this funky
habit of going into like a fifteen minute nap every
single game. It just still happened to be at the
beginning of Arizona and then they were trying to chase
it the rest of the way, and then when they
had to have it, Caleb Williams was like, you know what,
I'm one of the fifteen best quarterbacks on the planet,

(11:59):
and I'm going to show you why. I just kind
of think when that offense is fully fully focused, and
I think it will be, it has a little bit more.
I'm totally torn on this. I will not be shocked
either way, but I'm gonna go USC just because they
have the guy.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Oh I'll make it simpler for you because USC they
will win up until the moment they absolutely have to,
when they absolutely have to win, that's when they throw
up on themselves. This is not one of those times.
Oh my god, that now, okay, they could win. So
they'll win this game because it's not that kind of game.
Late in the year, we have to beat UCLA, we

(12:35):
have to win the Pac twelve championship game. That's when
USC falls short. So this game, uh, well finally, well.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
Yeah, they're coming up to that they've got they've got
a killer schedule coming up. And the other key thing
is to it's sim Hartman, mister just for men at himself.
He has a weird way over his career where he
went a long time without making any mistakes and then
all of a sudden they come in, bunches are coming
to flourish. Where there's the bowl game against Wisconsin where

(13:03):
all of a sudden they were killing them and then
elephant pick pick pick, and that was it. He kind
of has that once in a while. In USC's defense
has a pass rush, so the great their name offensive
line has been great so far, but it's not like
Hartman has had to deal with a whole lot of
a pass ruds because Ohio State doesn't really have a
have won. So this is maybe the first time that

(13:24):
Hartman has been really under pressure and it's not USC
isn't taking the ball away like it did last year,
but it sure has that ability and potential another big.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Game between top twenty five teams. I was going to
make a joke about some of these games you can
get into for under ten bucks, including SCUS five dollars
get in against Florida State, But we got UCLA and Oregon.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
You know, let's add Florida State. Oh but it's not
like it's a carrier. Dome is not five bunch, just
telling you it's okay, So five dollars.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
UCLA for real, Okay, But like again, compared to the
rest of the pack, I mean, I think Washington States
for real got them last week, Oregon States for real.
You know, Washington's for real, USC's for real, so for real. Yeah,
but now you're kind of having the you know, the
the usual sec problem where you could be for really

(14:17):
good and be nine and three and it's great, you're
going to the you know whatever Bowl. So they're they're
a good team, but they're sound. It took to Kelly
so long to get that offensive line right because it
was never right for years under Mora, and then it
took a while for Kelly to get there. And now
they's got the They're a physical team. This is not

(14:37):
any sort of you know, kind of finesse bunch. They
can actually bash. It's not like uh, some of Kelly's
old Oregon teams which kind of got by on a gimmick.
They this team can really play. So I like them,
and they're gonna be a tough out each every week.
I don't think they're gonna get to the PacTel Championship,
but they're gonna. They're gonna screw someone up along the way.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Dat. Lastly, a game that was supposed to be another
great one, a little bit of less luster on it
because of Miami not kneeling on the football last weekend.
Uh see I told that, I said, I got it. Well,
look I said it was general principal. You're gonna be
stupid and run the football. We're gonna say it's a fumble.
Uh this should be two five and o teams Miami

(15:18):
North Carolina going at it instead, Like I said, a
little bit of lesser off this because Miami gets the lost.
We talked about this a lot. If I said to you, Pete,
the reason Miami didn't kneel on the football was blank
forget because we know it was an awful If I
said the reason they didn't let kneel on the football,
what would you say?

Speaker 4 (15:34):
The ghosts of Joe Pisarca came down. I'm gonna get
you dead, so he's finally a ghost. But yeah, I
mean miracle at the Mill. It was a bet. Look,
he was down. He should not. It should not have
been called a fumble. He was actually down, but still
he don't fumble it and make a play, make a
defensive play. Actually, the reason why, the reason why they

(15:55):
ran the ball is because of the god awful uniform.
That's just really distracted from the greater goals. But look,
this is this isn't interesting because what I did like
about that if you notice at the very end it's
just a regular season game and they're still very good.
But that team was crushed, you see, like they didn't
they just didn't blow and they were like balling on

(16:17):
them and they were like, we you put their heart
and sole into this thing and you lost on that.
This is a really good team. I kind of like,
I think they're more like the team to beat Texas
A and M than whatever that was against Georgia Tech.
Who you know, they made some changes on defense and
then they really get that job done. But I'm still
waiting for North Carolina to wake up and go back
to being North Carolina a bit. But here's one funky

(16:39):
little nugget. I'll leave you with Florida State. Well, if
they get by Syracuse, of course, ye, Louisville and North Carolina.
They don't play each other, so you don't have like
a big ten East thing. So if they keep winning,
and if you look at Louisville's schedule, it might this
could be a really fun and entertaining debate We're gonna

(17:01):
have about the acc come mid November.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
He's on Twitter at Pete few Tech.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
That we just got another ES alert on Colorado.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
Yeah they just scored. Yeah, they just scored.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
There you go, literally just got another alerd my god,
this is crazy.

Speaker 1 (17:17):

Speaker 5 (18:06):
Me Colorado twenty nine nothing over Stanford, about three minutes
to go in the first half, and something you referenced
earlier to start the second quarter, the announcement from the
referee on the field as Stanford had the ball on offense,
please stop.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
Playing well Stafford is information ready to stop the ball
anymore playing.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
Color It's hurt out.

Speaker 5 (18:34):
All he needed was the Brett Musberger second and.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Nine second down.

Speaker 3 (18:39):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
Meanwhile, Stanford has all of thirty four yards passing in
the first self, I did mention last hour. This is
not a good football team and has not been for
a few years now. They're going to be one and
five after tonight and perhaps two and ten for the season.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
You're still waiting. They're still waiting. If Andrew Luck comes
out of retirement to play for Stanford, they will be fine.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
There's still what's at the game.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
He is he's on the sidelines, he's suiting up. I'm
looking he's getting dressed right now.

Speaker 5 (19:06):
And Anthony Anderson on the Colorado sideline. I don't believe
he's suiting up just for the record.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
Oh, he is lean and mean now though he's ready
to leaner.

Speaker 6 (19:14):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Wow, I'm triving to be positive.

Speaker 5 (19:19):
Okay, he's on a field with athletes. There's a certain
standard here. Shudoor Sanders, for example, speaking of athletes, has
three touchdown passes and yes, Colorado star Travis Hunter did
return tonight. He'd missed the last three games after taking
an illegal hit at a touchdown catch in the first quarter.
He has five receptions seventy yards so for Colorado has

(19:40):
over one hundred yards rushing on only thirteen carries in
this first half. Also in progress in the final minute,
Fresno State is taking a knee with the lead at
Utah State thirty seven thirty two and Tulane one thanks
to two touchdowns in the fourth quarter thirty one twenty
one at Memphis, Ohio State running back Trebon Henderson is
expected back for Saturday's game at Purdue. TCU quarterback Chandler

(20:03):
Morris could miss multiple games with the spring MCL. Kansas
quarterback Jalen Daniels might miss another game Saturday on FS
one at Oklahoma State due to his bad back. FS
one will have four games on Saturday, and starting things
off Saturday on Fox TV, it's number two Michigan hosting Indiana.
Brown's quarterback Deshaun Watson is out again Sunday with his

(20:24):
shoulder injury. PJ. Walker will start as they host five
and oh San Francisco. For the forty nine Ers, running
back Elijah Mitchell is questionable. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is
out with a neck injury. To Rod Taylor will start
at Buffalo Sunday night. The Giants are one and four
and running back Saquon Barkley listed his questionable with an
ankle injury. For the Cincinnati Bengals, wide receiver t Higgins,

(20:47):
who had the rib injury, listed his questionable, likely a
game time decision. He did return to full practice today.
Cincinnati will be hosting Seattle. Lions. Running back Jamior Gibbs
out this weekend with a hamstring injury, but Detroit wide
receiver aman Ross Saint Brown should return. He has no
injury designation now. And Carolina is zero and five. They'll
be playing at Miami. Carolina running back Miles Sanders out

(21:10):
with a shoulder injury. Lexi Thompson missed the cut playing
a PGA event in Las Vegas. She was at eventpar
The cut line was three under. Baseball's ALCS starts Sunday
night on Fox TV Texas at Houston Rangers. Pitcher Max Scherzer,
with the strange shoulder through a bullpen session today, says
he's ready. He was not on the roster for the
Divisional round. Rosters will be set for the LCS Sunday morning.

(21:34):
And this from Rams coach Sean McVeigh today, not only
preparing for the game against Arizona, but his wife is expecting.
They're preparing for the arrival of a baby do later
this month. He said it could be any day now
and McVeigh said if he comes during a game, I
won't be at the game. The Rams play the next
four Sundays. McVeigh says, of the DO dates, it's coming

(21:58):
up here in the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (21:59):
Back to you, thanks everyone, Steve oh.

(24:46):
nothing over Stanford. We'll have more football coming up later on,
actually in about twenty minutes or so. But this has
really bothered me today. It's really bothered me today. Look,
I had a great day today. Happy Friday everything.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
Yeah, Friday the thirteenth, my.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Day, right, It's Jason's Day on Friday the thirteen horror
movies on wherever you look. You know that the one
thing about Friday the thirteenth now is like is it
you know I'm fifty right or fifty two actually? And
you know Jason went growing up, was always somewhat of
a somewhat of a unique name, like not I didn't
know many Jason's, but apparently, you know, in the seventies

(25:24):
and eight that's when the name had its heyday. And
I remember looking in a book when we were looking
up names for Zoe. We're gonna have Zoe looking at
a name book and everything else, and and I just like,
I wonder what they say about Jason. And they say,
Jason's a name that first was popularized here, was a
popular name here. You know, it was an it name
for a little bit here. And they go, Now, though,
if you hear the name Jason, kids are just gonna think, oh,

(25:46):
that's my dad's name. Like Jason's become such an old name.
When I think of Jason Friday the thirteenth, I think
of like he's old. Now, he's like in his sixties.
He's gotta get up. He's got a stretch in the morning.
I can't all those campers unless I've had my coffee.
I gotta do some exercise, that's right.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
And now he gets up around whenever he used to
get up on time, Exactly.

Speaker 1 (26:08):
I can't just get up and kill people like I
used to. Got a I gotta run in the morning.
I I can't wear those big heavy work boots. I
gotta wear sneakers. Man, I need a lot of padding.
He's wearing sketches as he's running through the woods. Now, Oh,
I tell you this keeps my posture up straight as
I run. I'm just thinking about that. Jason's such an
old it's an older person's name. Now, I never thought
about that.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
Yeah, I can't say that. I've run across many classmates
through the years from my kids where Jason was the name.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
Yeah. No, No, Jason's your dad, your friend's dad's name.
I'm like, yeah, okay, never mind of getting older. Yep,
that's how it goes.

Speaker 3 (26:44):
Time to bring it back like that.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
This is this is what, this is what what I
was upset about today is.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
And it kind of I was hoping it wasn't that.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
No, no, no, no, not that, no whatever, It's fine. Look, dude,
I got Colorado on one TV, and I got Jared
Padileki from Supernatural trying to evade Jason on the other.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
I mean, I don't know why. He just doesn't call
Dean and they can kill Jason together. He Dean sam
So after the Dodgers win. After the Dodgers lose to
the Diamondbacks, Diamondbacks win and go on to the LCS,
Dave Roberts had an interesting statement after the game, and
he said, you know, I got to get the team
ready for the play. I gotta get them ready for

(27:21):
whatever format it is, and say, wait a minute, you're
gonna blame for the format. The Really, the format is
what's costing you. And after the Braves lost last night,
I saw a lot of that in my timeline buy
a lot of of of bitter Braves fans and insiders
and everything else going oh, you know, the format didn't
help and this, and I'm going.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
What what what? What is?

Speaker 1 (27:40):
What do they mean by the format? The format is hurting, Like,
what did you if it was best of twenty seven
you would have won enough games? I mean, what do
you mean the format? And the only thing I've seen
that that makes even the tiniest bit of sense was, hey,
because of the off days, the teams that that are
able to win in the wildcard round can line up

(28:01):
there pitching how they want them to do it. And
I'm like, okay, that's fine, I get it. I understand
that's a little bit of a thing, but you gotta
go win games. Spencer Stryder was able to pitch right,
and he was and they lost. He got beat right,
So that's not you know, Zach Wheeler pitched well. At
some point you have to play the games. And I
know that it's always it just doesn't feel right, that

(28:22):
teams with a hundred wins are going home much more early,
and everybody is missing the big point. Everybody's missing the point.
Why are we seeing these hundred win teams go home early?
It's pretty easy. Anybody can win a three game series,
five game series, seven games series. Anybody can. But up
until a few years ago, you didn't allow that many

(28:44):
teams in, so you didn't see that many upsets. Look
at that upset here. So the best teams were always advancing.
And if you had an upset where a division winner
was upsetting another division winner in the playoffs, well you
got two division winners. So it doesn't matter. You're not
seeing we weren't seeing the eighty five wins wild card
teams get on to be within a step of the
World Series. That's all it is. That's the difference is

(29:07):
that Major League Baseball playoffs have changed forever. It's nothing
with the fact that there's MLB teams and a hundred
It's not the format, it's not being able to bring
your aces back. It's that baseball has had such a
big change. This is a sport that's gone from we're
letting in the division winners only to now Okay, it's
division winners and one wildcards. Now division winners and two

(29:28):
wide three wildcards. You're letting in so many. We had
the COVID year where sixteen teams made the playoffs. The
baseball playoffs have changed to adjust with the times where
more playoff teams mean more interest. This is the new
normal for the MLB playoffs. There's gonna be more teams
in and we're just not used to it. And that's

(29:49):
all we have to do is get used to the
fact that this is the new normal for the baseball playoffs,
that you're gonna see more upsets because the hottest teams
are getting in. And it's that's why we talked about
the for next season. It's not about teams and figuring
out the play It's about not having to go crazy
winning one hundred and ten games, be a five hundred

(30:10):
ish team going into the regular season, and if you're good,
you make your moves of the trade deadline and become
a great team. Baseball playoffs have changed. Embrace that, don't
embrace it. There needs to be some kind of sho Okay,
we go out to win one hundred games, what are
we doing wrong? The Braves didn't do anything wrong. The
Dodgers didn't do anything wrong. You have to go play.
It's like fans wanted the Dodgers and Braves to get

(30:31):
a bye into the NLCS. Well, sorry, that doesn't happen.
You eventually have to play the games. The best teams
get in and the hottest teams win it. That's the
best thing it's ever been said about the playoffs, and
Derek Jeter said it. The best teams get in and
the hottest teams win it. But now that we've added
these wild card teams in, we just have to get
used to that. And we're not used to it yet.
We're not used to this new normal of the baseball

(30:53):
season being oh man, I don't know. We've seen these
upsets here in this and I don't get it. It's
the same thing as the NBA playoffs getting used to
the fact that we have play in games and it's
all I don't like it. But now we've had it
for a few years and the league is adjusted. The
players and teams. Their strategy is, let's just get in
the playoffs. Regular season means nothing, right, let's just get in.
We got to be one of the top ten teams
we don't really care if we're in the playing round.

(31:14):
We can still make it to the NBA finals. Look
at the Heat, however, there they were one quarter away
from going home after one game, and instead here they
are in the NBA Finals. So NBA has seen their
new playoff format that for the first couple of years
people didn't like. I'm not a big fan, but now
they're used to it. We just need a couple more
years of this in the baseball playoffs and people will

(31:35):
get used to the fact that, Okay, there's more teams
in and there's just more upsets, which will be more
fun for the game because a we get to see
these teams get in, and it's kind of like the
NCAA tournament a little bit, where more teams are getting in,
we could see upset teams move on. But that's all
it is. It's not anything that these teams did or
didn't do. It's not the format that's got a change
or be adjusted. It's just this is the new normal.

(31:56):
And anytime you see a new normal, you need time
to get used to it. And sometimes it's a season,
sometimes it's two years, three years, four years, whatever it is.
But as soon as fans get used to it. This
is not gonna be a story and it's gonna be Well,
the Dodgers got in, but man they lost. Boy, they
got upset. Well, they got another team gots in all,
but they get upset. It's gonna be a lot easier
to stomach and move on. Just fans have to get

(32:19):
used to it. That's all that has to happen.

Speaker 3 (32:20):
Well, I think part of it is the extension back
into the way baseball is being played beyond just the
the idea of the formatics and how you're playing series.
Here's your three game home stand in the wildcard round
and the layoff and whatever else is like, it's not
like those guys all got on a boat like they

(32:41):
were the giants, you know in the NFL a few
years back, right where that became the Curse of the Giants.
In theory, they were all still working out. Yeah, there
were some optional workouts and guys you know, did some
other things on their time. But in theory, first pitch
on Saturday for the Dodgers game on Let's go, and

(33:02):
then you know you have a butchered fly ball followed
by absolute chaos and disaster for three games. But we
talked about it in the regular season of with all
the rules changes, changing your philosophy, changing how you're building
your squad, changing whether you're aggressive on the base pass,
and getting back to old school baseball, Get them on,

(33:24):
get them over, get them in, creating runs versus sitting
around and waiting for the three run homer. Adding extra pitching,
and I know pitching is a whole other debate that
you can get into of starters in this age. You know,
in my day we had guys going seven innings all
the time. Nolan Ryan threw out a first pitch last

(33:45):
week and it was still eighty five miles an hour.
The man's seventy five years old. I mean, all of
that stuff that we get into, but there is some
bit of reality to it, right, paralysis by analysis, analytics,
whatever you got the old old head see I'm bringing
that NFL term in. Yeah, they don't well, but I
mean Boache and Dusty Baker are getting after it too,

(34:07):
cantankerous old managers doing it old schools style and saying
I'm not babying you. Get out there and play. You
think what Arcia did the video making the rounds when
he turned to the fans and was doing the nan
and nanny and boo boo and whatever, and Acuna had
to grab him and just like shut up. You know,
do you think that's happening in one of those other

(34:30):
clubhouses on the American League side of things. No, because
those guys get winded it they're gonna slap you upside
the head say stop, come on.

Speaker 1 (34:38):
Just really just say nanny, nanny, boo boo.

Speaker 3 (34:40):
I did I didn't. Really I didn't. I didn't. I didn't.
I didn't know how I wasn't. It was either gonna
be that or actually doing me like I was still
well angel going back to a league of their own.
But but you get the point is that you know,
there there's the philosophical way of how you're playing baseball.
And I think one of the things, again for the

(35:02):
older set, you know, the baseball purists, the old school,
seeing Bochee and Baker matched up is getting people excited.
See they play at the old school with a little
bit of other stuff mixed in and it's working just fine.
So yeah, I think your format and adjusting and fans
just recognizing that there's a new normal. It's like anything, right,

(35:25):
changes of games, changes of rules, changes go. You talk
about the NBA and.

Speaker 1 (35:33):
Look at the regular season.

Speaker 3 (35:34):
Right they tried to make this rule last week. He's like, yeah,
look at load management and this is how it's gonna work.
And everybody says, yeah, sure, good luck actually policing that.
In terms of the regular season, I'll put an ice
pack on my leg and walk to the court wave
at you. Ah, he's not available. What happened? He strained
himself walking from the locker room to the lay up line.

(35:57):
I mean, so you're not gonna be able to get
that out. But it's all about playoffs for the NFL.
Right now. You've got a couple of guys where we're
looking at injuries and and some of it is all right,
I think to a degree, it's like you manage it
saying we can afford to lose a guy for a
week or two in October versus December when we're trying

(36:17):
to ramp up towards the playoffs. Because if you are,
say Cincinnati, I don't know how I hurd T Higgins is.
He's a guy that's looking for a contract. So there's
a lot swirling behind the scenes. But if you're the Bengals,
you're saying well, we're playing for January, which is why
the way they handled Carl I wanted to say, Carson Palmer,
the why they handled, but why why they handled Joe

(36:40):
Burrow the way they have was curious for us, Right,
We talked about it a bunch like, no, you know,
why why wouldn't you you run him out, you know,
and give him a couple of weeks to heal and
then hopefully things haven't gone awry and you can get
back into it. Well, they're saying, he's getting healthier, he's
gonna run. He got a great matchup this week against Seattle.
But it's the same thing, right, trying to change and

(37:02):
adapt philosophies to where the game is, and with the
playoffs in Major League Baseball, it's the same thing. But
the rules of the game might change and alter a
little bit, but the basics are still there. If you
pay a guy forty million dollars a year, he still
has to hit the damn ball. Moki.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
Look, it's it's something that everybody needs to come around to,
and change is always difficult, and change is especially difficult
for teams and fans that were expecting more, Right, I
was expecting more from the Dodgers more from the Braves.
If the Phillies had lost Diamondbacks last Okay, well we lost.
We gave it a good run. But wait a bit,
wait a minute, waitite, this is wrong.

Speaker 3 (37:43):
This is wrong.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
Now you played. Look, you play a lot of games
in the regular season. Right, the regular season has become
less and less important. It's just like the NBA, right
to the NBA, eighty two games not important. Just just
get into the playoffs. That's all we care about. You
don't need to worry about going crazy and finishing first
in your conference. And the same thing now is gonna
be true for Major League Baseball. That's why the best

(38:04):
advice is for teams to go into the season, like
we've said, Hey, go in, build a team that compete.
Don't go crazy and say we've solved all our probably
spend all this might.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
No, no, no.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
Going with a team to compete that you think is
a five hundred is team. And as time goes on,
you make your moves of the deadline, you become better.
You get in the playoffs. Because right you're seeing that
eighty seven eighty nine, you win a eighty some odd
number of games, you are gonna get into the playoffs,
and that's only a couple of games over five hundred.
It's not even one game over five hundred every month.

(38:34):
It's one game over five hundred every two months, and
you're in the playoffs. So that's how it's going to be.
That's gonna wind up being what the adjustment's gonna be
is teams are no longer gonna go crazy loading up
on players. We're gonna go with this guy we need,
so we need a third baseman and a starting pitcher
and three guys in the bullpen. Well maybe instead of
the offseason, you get a starting pitcher, you get a

(38:56):
third basement and you leave the bullpen to figure it
out as the season goes on. Or you get a
third baseman and a couple of bullpen guys and you
wait to get your starting pitcher of the deadline. That's
how it's going to go. And teams are going to
change that way and say, well, we're not going to
go cover everything and walk into spring training and say
now we're one hundred win team. No, those days are gone.
And at least the Dodgers and Braves have shown us
that way that going crazy to win is not going

(39:18):
to do it. And the Dodgers have done it the
traditional way. We have great guys coming up from the
miners and we signed big time free agents the Braves
that we're doing it a new way. We're identifying all
our young stars and we're signing them to all long
term deals at a at a big uh, at a
big rate for us later on. And that hasn't worked.
So what what can you say? That's the adjustment. It's
adjust to what the what October is and teams are

(39:41):
going to do that now beginning of the season. That's
the best way to do it.

Speaker 3 (39:44):
Well, you're trying to do it Dad, right here in
Los Angeles, man, everybody's wringing their hands. You know, division
titles and we've said it for a long time here
you and I working together here at Fox Sports Radio.
You know, after a while, that's that's cute and that's fun. Right,
You got to keep some level of consistency. But you
get to a point it's like, all right, it's those
are those are all fine and good? Now now you're

(40:06):
what happens in October and when you keep having to
go back to you know, you got the the COVID
year and taking care of that, which so many people
went out and took the baseball bat to it after
the elimination this week. I mean, my goodness, the level
of angst and anger against the Dodgers. I mean, folks,

(40:26):
I'm not saying here in Los Angeles there's certainly some
folks that need the hug, but now nationwide it's like, man,
go find some happiness and light in your lives. But
it does speak to a whole other philosophical shift and
adapting to the way the game is moving. We say
that while on the other side of our mouth saying shoe,

(40:49):
I'm Toni's gonna look really good as a Dodger, right, So,
I mean, look, it's it's it's a curious beast to navigate,
and all those games create a little bit separation which
is just lost in the postseason in this new world order.
