This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Hello, Welcome inside the Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. We're live from the tirac dot Com
studios tirect dot com and help you get there an
unmatched election, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection at
over ten thousand recommended installers. Tiract dot com is the
way tire buying should be. Well, we got a lot
(00:54):
of fantastic stuff tonight. Look, we got so much football news.
You got a big basketball story we're gonna into but
of course on the air on our show here in
Los Angeles, We're going to do the show and we're
going to give you the best type of bleep in
entertainment weekend, especially on nights like tonight. All our thoughts
are with everyone fighting and affected by the Palisades fire.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Over twenty nine hundred acres are burning.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
You see the video on social media, and the entire
hillside is on fire. The Getty Villa is on fire.
I've been to that museum so many times over the
course of the last few years. I'm watching Steve Gutenberg
stay behind and help get cars and people to safeties,
doing interviews and staying back. It's just to see the
human element really step up in times like this. Prayers
(01:42):
up for them and for all the firefighters. I believe
Los Angeles is called in in anybody who can get
there firefighter wise to help them with this blaze. It
is a really, really big deal. There is a lot
of devastation, and all our thoughts, all our attention with
everybody tonight who is fighting and affected by this fire.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Just an insane explosion to it how quickly it spread.
The Gutenberg interview, he was basically doing a PSA saying,
if you're going to leave your car on the roads
up here, leave the keys at it so we can
move them so that they can get out of the way.
Because they had to literally bring in bulldozers to knock
cars off of the street because it was impeding any
(02:20):
progress of fire trucks and emergency vehicles like it just
it escalated so quickly watching the local news coverage, gas masks.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
On all all of it, and you know, I opened
my window.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I figured I'd take the extra time it would to
get to the studio because the last time we had
this kind of stuff, I had power issues and wanted
to make sure it was, you know, fully available and
coming in. Like you can smell it, smell it, you
can see the flakes of ash up in the air.
Just a very scary experience here for folks. And this
(02:55):
is for some the third time they're evacuating in six
seven weeks. We saw our guys posting about that that
they've gotten the evacuate evacuation orders again.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Uh, it's a frostburg, I said, Oh my god, guys.
The lights are out outside. The lights are out at
the liquor store, and and the and the I believe
at the gas station, all around the station.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
It is just really, really weird.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
And it is and is a time for everybody to
come together and to and to hope that everybody and
all the first responders are out there and the firemen
are getting it done and everybody is getting evacuated to safety,
and uh, as I said, we'll continue to monitor this
and hope for good news as the night post goes on. Obviously,
with fires like this, a lot depends on the winds
and how they blow, and so far it hasn't gone
(03:41):
the way you expect it to. Sometimes we just we
avoid big wildlife disasters because the winds are right and
and it blows everything out to sea, and okay, we
can contain it. Uh need a little bit of that
to now tonight for that for everybody. So again, all
our thoughts are with them. However, our show is about sports,
right You tune into us to get a break from
stuff like that, and you know, our job is to
(04:01):
entertain you and to do the best we can, and
we're gonna try to do that over the course of
the next few hours. And I mean, look, we're gonna
say things like, you're interviewing Pete Carroll on Thursday, my garment,
You're interviewing Pete Carroll to be and go to the bears.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Can I just say, wait, wait, wait, wait wait, keep
going sounded like my man off to the side in
purple rain.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Wait wait, wait, wait, wait a Dallas said, note to
Mike McCarthy, We're going to Pete Carroll. Everybody lit those
air monarchs in here, We're ready to go.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Well, legit, what did we say?
Speaker 4 (04:40):
I mean, going back to the beginning of the show yesterday,
as we talked about the Bears, you have no plan.
You are scattershot, hoping someone's gonna show up and just
blow you away. Right, that was the rumor of what
happened all those years ago, all those I feel like
I'm Daniel day Lewis and I'm like, oh, the way
over here, the straw. What happened with Mike Tomlin right
(05:02):
when he got the interview? He just blew everybody away.
So we're gonna do the open casting call and eventually
someone's gonna come in here and they're gonna have the
plan that is the perfect overlay with what we've mapped
out behind the scenes, and it's gonna be like one
of these things in a movie, or it's like.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Eureka, we figured it out. He's a golden child that
cam to town. Are you kidding me? So I'm glad
that everybody picked up on that.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Today, my Chicago roots feeding the fuel across television and
radio across the day. But yeah, the list keeps getting longer.
It's like that damn Cleveland Brown's jersey of the quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
At this forty quarterbacks, it's ninety nine forty interviews by
Thursday night. Look, dude, and look part today. I mean, look,
we had another coach get fired, which we'll get to
coming up in a couple of minutes. But it was
just yesterday the Bears wanted to talk to Mike McCarthy
in addition to the other fifteen or sixteen chiple they
want to talk.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
That was a three slide kind of job. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
McCarthy on the lid. Let me cross them off.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
They said no, the Cowboys say no to the Bears
interviewing Mike McCarthy. And you know what we said this
last night. Mike McCarthy's a good coach. Mike McCarthy. If
they if they want interview, to just go. Jerry Jones,
let you out of that contract if you don't want
to be there. And you know what, Jerry Jones only
wants you now just because oh other people want you.
So now, Jerry Jones, let you go through the whole year,
(06:24):
put pressure on you. Everything that went along with being
the coach of the Cowboys. Dad got hurt. Oh, we're
gonna see how things go. We're gonna see how things
go before I want to commit to Mike McCarthy. Oh,
by the way, up until this year, twelve games a year,
the last three years, twelve wins a year the last
three years. Okay, Oh, but now that it doesn't look
like there's a lot of great candidates out there, and
there's not right Ben Johnson, who might say with Detroit
(06:46):
because the.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Who may not even be the best.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
He's a great head coaching prospect in theory.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
And you have Mike and you have Mike Rabel and
maybe you're not getting either of those guys. But now
suddenly that, oh, hey, we'd like to talk to Mike McCarthy.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
Oh now I know.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Now we gotta say no. Now I gotta say he
only is doing this because oh now I got to
wait and see which way the wind blows. He doesn't
believe in Mike McCarthy. He does not. If he did,
he would have said, it doesn't matter. Mike's a great
head coach. Let's move on. We're going forward with Mike McCarthy,
but no, no, Instead, let's wait and see how things go.
His contract lapses in a week. He doesn't want you.
(07:22):
If I'm McCarthy, I say, screw that. No, if you're
gonna hire me, right, you're gonna hide the bears of you.
If I come in and talk, you're gonna hire me. Yeah,
you know what I'm going and see you, Jerry. You
had your chance, but now you only like me because
other people do. It's like in high school when you
have that one friend that you're hanging out with and
you're like, yeah, I don't know, eh, are they cool enough?
Speaker 3 (07:41):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
I don't want to tell people were hanging out of it.
But then it's like, oh, oh oh, other people see
that person is cool.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Oh now hey now we're best friends. Yeah no, no,
I'm not. I'm okay with having that relationship. Oh yeah
yeah yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
You always had to have a friend in the group
that was called better Deal.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Yeah. Something else came up that was the nickname better
Deal Black.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
No, no, no, but everybody said, oh, everybody sees how cool
this person is or someone you're dating, and it's like, yeah,
I don't know, I don't know. But then other people like,
Oh my god, are you kidding? She's so hot, she's great,
she's so smart, she's fun. Oh no, no, I really
like her now, No, I like her because you like her.
Like that's what Jerry Jones is doing. But like McCarthy
because other people like him. So now I want to
keep him. If i'm macarthy, I say, screw you. I'm
(08:20):
leaving you. Add your chance. For some reason, I'm not
good enough. That's okay, good luck trying to find somebody.
Good luck with Matt Naggy as your head coach next year,
good luck, good luck, that'll be great. Go and see it, Jerry,
let me out, let me go, I'm going. My contract,
this laps and goodbye.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
That's in the positive column. Thus far for the Bears
is they have not asked for permission to speak to
Matt Naggy yet. But with the McCarthy thing, it's just
consistent with what Jerry's been doing with all of his stars, right, I.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Really want him here.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Well, then get him signed. Nah, you know we'll get
to it. I really want him signed.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
I wait for it.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Wait another year, wait another two, dak CD and now
Mike McCarthy's just the latest. The long line of oh wait,
now we actually have to pay the piper, and realizing yes,
in the marketplace, who the hell do you really love
that's in the in this space? Right unless there's some
college coach that you've identified that you love. We've heard
(09:15):
some of the Sarkesian rumors starting to creep back out there.
But otherwise, you know, we're going into coordinators who may
have had a little spotlight in the sun.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Right we saw Slowic a year ago.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
Are you going off of what he did this year
and saying, yes, this was this was a genius work
that we want to grab that momentum and keep going No, No,
you didn't. Yes, they're a playoff team, but because the
division was so colossally bad, I can go on down
the line. Cliff Kingsburg, you trust in him as a
head coach? Again, I could keep doing this all day.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
One guy somebody for some and he's one of those guy.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
It's too we're the defensive guys that to say, all right,
well we've got a quarterback that we want, but it's
too soon for a lot of guys.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
For me, man, it's just too soon for a lot
This is.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
A year where we have no really great openings and
not any great coaches to film.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
It's like the Iron Cheek used to say, sometimes you
have to be humbled these humbled long enough.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, this is a terrible look. That's something we're gonna
do a little bit less than a hour from now.
But it's it's an absolutely terrible year because all the
openings are bad, you know, I mean you have to
really to try to find one out of all of
these openings, and and there's not a lot of exciting candidates.
It's all a lot of retreads and hoping the guys
will get it right a second time. And and you
know when when when the Bears and the Jets are
(10:32):
on their fifteenth request for an interview, it's like, come on, mad, like, really,
anybody out there that's any good?
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Like it's it did In the NFL.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Draft, some years are great for quarterbacks, right and and
five get taken in the first round and boy it's awesome.
But other years it's not a great first round for quarterbacks.
But guess what quarterbacks still get taken because well you
kind of have to it hope that a quarterback doesn't that's.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
What this year.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
But you put it in this year, it's bad for
quarterbacks in the draft. It's bad for coaches and teams.
This is just one of those.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Years, man.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
But the coaches are quarterbacks in the draft thing, right,
How many reports did you see today?
Speaker 4 (11:04):
I can talk about Drew Aller. It's like if he
has a great run in the final fource, like, you.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Haven't seen enough of that guy. He's been a quarterback
and forever.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
To put it in perspective, he's got three plus years
of training cards set him out there.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
This whole new world of nil and everything hasn't been
around that all.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
He's a poster job for the way this thing changed.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
I'm telling you, man, I would love Mike McCarthy to
just say, screw you, I'm leaving. You had your chance,
but you want you wanted to Jerry Jones your way
through things. They go, well, I'm not gonna make a
decision until I absolutely have to. But with people calling,
maybe that means he's good. Maybe we should keep the guy,
Like I mean, that's that's how fantasy people decide to
not make a trade. Well, everybody is calling me about
(11:48):
about Breese Hall, Maybe that means I should hold onto
him all. No, I'm not gonna trade him too. Many
people are asking me about him in the trade. I'm
gonna hold onto him now, Like I don't.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
I don't get the whole approach by the cowboys. I
get that they live and in chaos, and they've been
and they've lived in that controlled chaos for years. But
this is a case where come on, you let the
guy go for for you know, in a week his contract,
I mean, his contract lapses in a week. It's where
we're deciding on what to do. I mean, clearly, it
(12:17):
is only because there's nobody else out there. I like,
like Jerry Joe's sitting in his office waiting, go, Well,
if I get a phone call from somebody saying, hey,
I'd like to come go, Like if the Belichick guy says, hey,
I've had it North Carolina, I'm gonna go Like, really,
is he waiting for a for a phone call from
someone to just pop out of the weeds and go,
oh yeah, you're my guy? Oh sorry, we're not gonna
go with with with Mike McCarthy like this is and
(12:38):
it embarrasses me that McCarthy says, oh, I really want
to stay with the cowboy that Richard he did come.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
On, but Jerry did this before he did this with
Jason Garrett. Remember we had it years ago and I
had the Twitter feed where it had the picture of McGinley.
It's like, you know, what would you say you do
here and everything but talking about fixing the glitch and
it was, Hey, in seven days, the glitch is fixed
with Garrett.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Guess what he stayed.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
I I really want Mike McCarthy to grow a backbone
and say, screw you.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
I'm leaving.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Good luck, good luck with somebody else, new System, DAK,
everything else. You let us go to any other any
other place, right, he could go anywhere.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
It would be.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Then it would be okay, Ben Johnson, Mike McCarthy and
Mike Rabel like that.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
It would be he.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Would be because people understand that McCarthy's a good coach,
and they understand that boy you have to kind of
grate him on a curve because he's coaching in Dallas,
right like that. If this was Green Bay, or if
this was you know, Seattle, and it was hey, okay,
you won twelve games, Okay, but you haven't really gone.
I can see where there might be a little bit
of Ah's McCarthy really gonna get you from B to C. Right,
(13:44):
definitely A to B we've seen but he's he B
two C. But coaching like this in Dallas. And again
what I said last night, it's not his fault that
Dak Prescott sucks in the playoffs. It is not his
fault the fact that with all of this going on
in Jerry Jones of trying to figure out the roster
and paying guys he shouldn't pay, the fact that you
could still go twelve twelve, twelve wins, and and and
and into the playoffs and be a threat and only
(14:06):
be beholding to the fact your quarterback stinks when it
when the when when the chips are down, Like I
think teams understand, Okay, he's he's really got a great
handle on this. And boy, he would absolutely flourish with
our team.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
He would be.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
It would be it would be the next three guys
because right now it's Johnson and Vrabel and everybody else.
And now it's Johnson, Vrabel and McCarthy, and maybe McCarthy
jumps ahead of Rabel, maybe he jumps out, maybe Ben
Jonson's I don't want to he would be maybe becomes
the number one guy, because at least he has a
better track record more recently than Rabel does.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Yeah, it's all chaos.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
In the interim, Pete Carroll, Baby, let's go good luck?
Speaker 3 (14:39):
What kind of music you get I'm playing during the interview.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon
live Fromthtirack dot com studios. And before we get into
Black Tuesday in the NFL, which kirchen into Black Wednesday,
Black Thursday, all the way through uh Big Game in
the NBA Tonight, the Mavericks absolutely boat race the Lakers.
(16:46):
They suck one to eighteen ninety seven. This is why
whenever I talk about the Lakers and how the level
of excitement I have, it's always with words like tepid
and caution and careful because they got boat raced by
the G League Mavericks team.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
They did.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
No Luca, no Kyrie, no Roy Tarpley, no Dirk Novitski.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Kimmy Jackson, No, I mean Evan Ashmeier, who wasn't I.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Mean Quentin Grimes, nixt Yo g me off the bench
and scores twenty three and the Lakers don't just lose,
they lose by twenty I mean Lebron with a triple double.
And it's like, this is this is inexcusable for a
team that has any sort of real hopes and dreams
for this year. It's like, Okay, you go into Dallas
and lose and it's Luca and it's got okay, even
(17:42):
though they're not having a great regular season. You want
to lose to Luca and Kyrie, all right, I get it,
But they're out, man, and you go in and you
just don't even show up like that.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
That's why when I look at the Lakers, I.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
Go, hey, every time they win a couple of games
in a row and people start getting chesty and all
Lebron and ad is the fountain of youth. Then they no, no, no, tepid, calm, reserved, restrained.
Those are all the best adjunctives for the Lakers, because
this is what they turn into. They'll have a couple
of games without play well, then they'll have stuff like
this and you go, what the hell and why is
(18:12):
Lebron dancing at the end of this game? You know, hey,
they just just lost by twenty. Man, I'll tell you this, Dallas.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Come on, hey, that was more foot movement than he
did on that one defensive rotation.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
That's making the rounds.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Everybody cut, everybody cut, dude.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
I mean, how about you rotate out to the three
point shooter.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
Nope, man, And then he jumped up and down like
a five year old who didn't get to have dessert.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
After the shot went in. It's like, you didn't rotate.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
This is why, you know, a near triple double for him.
But still, you know they're not even close. They don't
make a run in the fourth quarter. It's a game
that is close at halftime, and the second half the
Mavericks outscoring by sixteen. Like Spencer Dinwiddie and PJ. Washington
and Klay Thompson, you know, Jayden Hardy. These are these
are guys who are who are who are on the court,
(19:00):
sinking big shots, coming back down like, hey man, we're
beating the Lakers. This is a we're growing up in
front of everybody's eye.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
Washington was a big deal for them during the playoffs
a year ago, so they're hoping he can continue to grow.
But yeah, you're old guy, Quenton Grimes. Hey grimy, cu
yo cube. I live above a bowling alley and underneath.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Another bowling I mean, he almost came off the bench
for a triple double. He's twenty three to nine and eight,
nine and six boom. But again, tepid, that's the that
should be the word for the Lakers. Tepid, retepid reservation,
tepidly optimistic, I said, I can't say optimistic.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
I know it is.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
It's like it's you know, it's it's when you get
into the shower in your house, like after everybody else's
like when you have people over and they're staying over
and everybody's taking a shower. You go out for the
day and like you're the last one to shower, get
to your house, You're like, okay, I'm all beat it
out in five minutes. You're like, oh, this is this.
Everybody's used up the hot water. This is so lukewarm.
Now that's the Lakers. The Lakers on that last luke
(20:00):
warm shower of the morning, when you know Aunt Petunia
and Uncle Bert and they're six kids have all showered
and they're downstairs, you know, digging, digging holes in your floor,
like I just want to jump in a shower for
five seconds. That that's the Lakers. They're the tipidity of
that watertime.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
I have all sorts of questions about the analogy and
that you just used and some relatives that may or
may not be real.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
No, I don't have an uncle Bert. Well, aunt Petunia.
I guess Harry Potter's on my min because I thought
of Ampatuna.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
But did you have did they have the six kids?
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Though?
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Oh no, no, Well, well we've we've had members of
Pam's family out here where it's like six kids at
the top.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
So I was kind of thinking about that.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
But don't tell me about did they do any snake
round ups? Like they're Randy Quaid and in vacation?
Speaker 5 (20:44):
No, no, they all just want to talk about the Lions.
That's okay, that's all it is. It's fine. There's no
snake round up, there's no nah.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
You did twenty hours of radio each week. You don't
need to talk about the Lions anymore. By the way,
a little development here, Your guy porzingis going to the bench,
uh hobbled his ankle, get his footstep down it looked like,
and goes off awkwardly. Ten point Boston lead two minutes
left in the first at Denver. But here is your
guy porzingis.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Steve de Sego love more in this game coming up
in what's trending in a few minutes. But now it's
time for black Tuesday. We had black Monday, we had
black Sunday. Girodmeo gets fired. We like Monday, Doug Peterson
got fired. And I want to say thanks to the
to the NFL for spacing all these firings out.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Don't give it to.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
Give us contention there out the week, right because it
is it is a few days until we get to
the college football semifinals on Thursday and Friday, so we
kind of need not just Monday, but Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
So I'm sure there's a there's a schedule that's set,
and we'll get the surprise firing on Wednesday.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
Right.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
This is where this is normally.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Where the Raiders do it, where you think, okay, everything
is oh no, no, no, no, no, Now we're gonna
fire a guy. So I'm sure we'll get the one
last firing tomorrow to make it seven openings, and then
nothing on Thursday and Friday, because that's when we have
the college football semi five, so something to take us through.
I like the NFL's schedule all of this, like I
could just see Goodell going through and Okay, so Monday
is right, okay, so Sunday Craft, you're taking Sunday right, Okay,
(22:08):
the Sunday slot is gone, all right, Jaguars, what do
you want? We'll take Monday at ten, Monday at ten, Jaguars. Okay,
what do we got here to our Raiders?
Speaker 3 (22:16):
What do you want? Oh? You know, we'll take.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Tuesday at like nude, Okay, great, Raiders have Tuesday in
dare who else?
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Did who else? Deed?
Speaker 1 (22:23):
What else we got? So they're doing that for us,
and I kind of dig that they're doing that.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
No, it's good and we'll see if any more surprises
come up. I mean there's still plenty of decisions to
be out there. I mean plenty of top notch candidates.
I mean Mike McCarthy. Maybe your team will get the
okay to talk to him.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Could be trade, you never know, right, I.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Mean, look, the Bears even brought that up in their
inane Wow it was really just one bad quote after
the next. My brothers and I I think we texted
more today than we have in years combined, Like did
you see this nonsense?
Speaker 3 (22:54):
How about this? Bears?
Speaker 4 (22:56):
Hey, anything could happen. I mean, there could be a
trade on the table. We'll give up draft picks, Like
what are we doing?
Speaker 3 (23:03):
What do you like?
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Why? Why?
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Why?
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Why's that guy still got a quote unquote job. Sorry, polls,
you're out. Uh you're gonna be the fall guy. But
all of that to say, yeah, there's nothing to say
that we won't have another change coach GM full on
structural change. There's still plenty of chaos to come.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
But today we wave goodbye to Antonio Pierce, who was
relieved of his duties as.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Head coach of the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
And now, first I want to say this because the
the the overwhelming image I have of Antonio Piers. It's
kind of weird when I think of back to the
you know, the the one plus year that Antonio Piers
had as the as the interim coach and then okay,
let's bring him back and then they didn't win any
games and you go over the division like it's gonna happen.
Is that I just think of him. I think of
(23:50):
his press conference yesterday where he's wearing that really sweet
starter pull over that I really want one, like I
want a Mets one like that, and I want to
Jets one like that, but they're like five hundred dollars
on eBay.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
It's like, come on, guys.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
But like he's wearing that sweet Raiders starter pullover that
has the half zip in the pocket and he's saying,
hey man, when you're good, everybody says apap.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
When you stink, everybody watch you fire.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
I just think, going, man, he just looks like he
just looks like the epitome of cool.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Right there.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
I'm wearing a sweet ass pull over and I know
I'm probably gonna get fired. So I digged Antonio Pierce
went out with that kind of dignity.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
So did that go out with a smile. I look
he got he got a shot. Yeah right he did.
After the interim tag placed in twenty twenty three, everybody
rallied based on good feelings and just the whole aura
around the team had taken at least a positive turn,
long standing and sustainable. Oh certainly not, especially when you
(24:45):
picked terribly at the quarterback position in terms of how
you were going to move forward. Whether it was a
long term plan of hey, we're going to struggle in
twenty four and eventually get it right to Lesco's gonna
get another run. It looks like there again, unless Mark
Davis and Tom Brady changed their mind tomorrow. Because again,
all of this is fluid. All of it's fluid. I mean,
(25:05):
Rex Ryan interviewed with the Jets. You have no idea
what's coming down the next timeline, Guys, I texted you
the perfect fit. Brandon Staley is the perfect guy for
that job.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
You actually you actually texted with Brandon Staley already in
radst You had it photoshopped in raiders gear.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
I'm I'm all for it. We need to we need
to start this, we need to get this going. And
so what you're saying is thought it was just a matter.
I think he's a really really good coach, and he
likes Vegas. Make it happen all right, and he los Vegas.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
But I will tell you this right and and I'm
and I'm serious about this because I know that we
say his name and it comes up and and it
doesn't feel like he's leaving. But Dion Sanders is never
going to have a better chance to coach his kid
than if he left for the Raiders.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Now.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
No, I know, leaving Kylee would be a it would
be a difficult leave for him because he says I'm staying.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
I'm staying. I'm saying. But wouldn't be the first coach
to say I'm staying and I'm leaving for the NFL.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
But if he wants to go and coach Shador Sanders,
like this is it like if you want to go
coach your kid, usually everybody's dreamed of that end when
they're fourteen, fifteen years old, right, Like I coach my
kid for a long time. I knew it was time
to it was okay, time be done. You go with
other coaches now. But he's got a chance because if
the Raiders hired him, right, He's such a strong personality
(26:29):
and such a strong influencer that nobody that's drafting one
through five would even think about taking Shador Sanders, and
he would fall into the Raiders lap at six. Yes,
you have the Hey, I don't really know how good
he is, and some pundits don't have a first round
grade on Shador Sanders, but he's still gonna go.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
At the top. He's still one of the two most
talented quarterbacks, and quarterbacks go high.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
But there is nobody who would get in the way
of the range. If the Raiders hired Deon Sanders, they
would say, you know what, not getting involved in this,
not getting involved in whatever could happen. I am gonna
LeVar Ball, stay my way out of what's happening here.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Right.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Why do you think with Lonzo and the Lakers, nobody
else is gonna take him? I don't want that, to
want his dad, you know, be in a shadow over
the team. I don't want to coach Shador Sanders and
have his dad chiming in on stuff and have him
say who knows what he what? He would wind up
saying how coachable would he be if his dad's coaching
another team? Nobody, nobody is gonna jump in that way,
and he would have a clear path to take him
(27:27):
at number six. So you want to coach your kid
if he really wants, you can't tell me he doesn't
want to. I know he wants to stay and everything
is wonderful, But his kids are gone now right. And
when I say his kids, I mean Chador is gone
and Travis Hunter is gone. Uh, you are having two
guys your team get drafted in the top five or
six picks. That's not gonna happen again. If you're gonna go,
(27:47):
if you're gonna coach your kid, this is the time
to do it. Nobody will stand in your way of
drafting Shador Sanders. The Giants aren't gonna take him a
number two and say yeah, we're gonna make it work here.
That not gonna They're not gonna have to sit here
and say I gotta worry about in every press conference
what somebody's gonna tell me. But Deon Sanders is gonna say, oh,
I watched film with that Giants game. Man, I don't know.
I don't know when they keep when they can call
(28:09):
in those plays to X on the side. When I
I mean you're gonna risk that happening. You have no idea.
Deon Santa is a complete wild card.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Raiders. Hire him.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
He'll coach your door Sanders. And at least now you
have an identity. And how much fun would Dion and
Chadeur in Vegas be?
Speaker 3 (28:22):
Like it?
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Forget about everything else, forgit about the Cowboys and the
Steelers and all these all the popular team it would
all be. It would all be glitz and glamour and
Dion and Vegas and Chador like that makes sense so
many ways around. That is probably not gonna happen, but
it makes so much sense.
Speaker 4 (28:37):
Mike Carmen, Well, we could also turn back time. I
mean back when they were doing videos in Atlanta with
mc hammer and stuff. So like we get to bring
that to Vegas and you're gonna have his full entourage
with him in the whole nine yards.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
How about that?
Speaker 5 (28:51):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
I like it. Everything is back in the nineties, were
old again.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
Hey le to quit and McCarthy uh and Pete Carroll
and all these guys are gonna get jobs.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
No, the curiosity still is remember Shaduer with his giant shoes.
As to whether there's still potential for Dable and Shane
to be blown out should Dion, you know, just waving
their general direction the merrit family. But yeah, the the
Chaduur draft grains are interesting, right, Why look at any
(29:28):
mock drafts because of necessity and because of what the
quarterback always does. I should say that the latter part
is the bigger one. We always know quarterbacks are going early.
He gets drafted, but you have all these reports that
you know he's low end one or high two or
whatever the case is, or some saying I wouldn't draft
him at all. That. Yeah, maybe it does sync up
(29:49):
perfectly to go to Brady and what the Raiders are
cooking for twenty twenty five, nothing else. It'll make them
relevant beyond the Raider image store over at Universal City.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Look, and what do you get it?
Speaker 1 (30:01):
You're getting a head coach in a in a in
a head coaching cycle where there's not a lot of
exciting candidates, and clearly.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
Mike Frakwel and Ben Johnson aren't going to the ring.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
You're getting your quarterback when you need a quarterback, right,
Aid and O'Connell has shown I'm just a guy. Gardner
mentioned has been a career backup. You solve your two
biggest issues. Now, yes there's a chance and a risk,
but there's always a chance and a risk. But you
solve those top two issues with hey, head coach, quarterback
check check. Wow, we did that. We did that really
really fast, and it was really easy to do it.
(30:29):
I know that we want to sync Dene up with
all these openings, But you want to coach Shador. This
this is the way it happens.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Man.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
If not, you're then you're waiting. You're waiting for wherever
Shador Sanders winds up for that team to not do well.
And then I mean, really, but this is it. You
could do one fell swoop man. You could be in Vegas.
You would be the biggest rock star head coach in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
If not, what if Brady steals Vrabel from Craft?
Speaker 1 (30:52):
Yeah, but I don't know that Vrabel is now Rabel. Hey,
I'm excited if my team gets Vrabel, But overall, like,
oh my goodness, Mike Rabel, like no, like Rabel doesn't
move move the needle at all like my team. I'm excited. Hey,
all right, I'm excited, but but Deon Sanders moves the
needle way more. He's the only coach you pay attention
to in college football until the playoffs start. He's the
(31:14):
only guy. What's he saying all year long? Come on, man,
that's how it goes.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
He's a guy.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swollen Dome. The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carmon Live from the tire rack
dot Com studios. Time now to find out what's trending
in the wide world. A sportsman, a man who said
he would go for free to be Dion Sanders offensive
coordinator in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
It's Steve de Saga.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
Uh yeah, that would be enticing, wouldn't it. Let's go yeah, yeah,
let's maybe we could have co offensive codinatives with this. Yeah, well,
you're not kidding this. This reminds me of my favorite
stat of the day. After the Raiders fired head coach
Antonio Pierce, ap points out the list of most wins
by a coach at the Raiders home stadium since they
(31:57):
built Allegiate Stadium there. Antonio Pierce had six home victories.
Josh McDaniels six in that building. Andy Reid has six
victories in that building in Las Vegas. To the NBA
Chris Tops Porsingis has come back into the game, took
a brief breather on the bench because he got hit
below the belt going for a rebound. The Celtics are
(32:18):
leading at Denver forty three twenty eight early in the
second quarter. Out for the Nuggets tonight Nikola Jokic due
to illness. It is currently the heat of twenty nine
twenty three at Golden State after the first quarter, and
at Utah it's only Hawks eighty three eighty over the
Jazz mid third quarter. Utah with a record of nine
and twenty five. Washington is six and twenty eight after
(32:39):
losing it home to Houston one thirty five one twelve. Dallas,
without injured stars Kyrie Irving and Luka Dontsich still beat
the Lakers one eighteen to ninety seven. Minnesota got thirty
two points from Anthony Edwards in a win at New
Orleans one o four to ninety seven. Pelicans now seven
and thirty, and they did have Zion Williamson back on
the court tonight. He'd missed two months with a strain hamstring.
(33:02):
Zion with twenty two points in twenty eight minutes of work.
Charlotte ended a ten game losing streak, beating Phoenix one
fifteen to one oh four. There are no more undefeateds
in major college basketball. Number one Tennessee was fourteen and
zero and lost badly at number eight Florida seventy three
forty three the final. In fact, this is the most
(33:23):
lopsided win against a number one ranked hoops team since
Kareem and UCLA at the nineteen sixty eight Final four
destroyed Houston and Elvin Hayes. Tennessee at one point from
three point range was one for twenty four. They were
down twelve nothing quickly seventy three forty three Gators the finals.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Steve's just reading the Knicks box court. We got the show.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
We win.
Speaker 6 (33:49):
Georgia beat number six Kentucky eighty two to sixty nine.
NHL wins for Edmonton and Tampa Bay pitcher Justin Verlander
agreed to a one year deal with the Giants, reportedly
worth fifteen million dollars. Former Orioles pitcher Brian Mantus has
died at the age of thirty seven. He pitched for
the O's from two thousand and nine to twenty sixteen,
and a former Pirates pitcher, Bob Veal has passed away
(34:11):
at the age of eighty nine. He pitched for the
Pirates from nineteen sixty two to seventy two.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O.
Speaker 1 (34:17):

Speaker 3 (35:47):
Now how do we play this game?
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Well, you know this week everybody, well half the league
is going home, getting.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
Set for the off season. Is chats Alex? Yeah, we've
been the jetsmen ready for the off seats at October?
What are the Jets for? One thousand?
Speaker 1 (36:02):
So normally when someone leaves, the season ends, you know,
team has exit interviews.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
They talk to the players and coaches. Hey, what's this?
What can we do better next year? How are you
feeling at this point?
Speaker 1 (36:12):
So this is NFL twenty four exit interview? Who am I?
I'm gonna say some things that could be said by
a star player or coach and you simply tell.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
Me who I am? You guys ready, Oh shit? All right?
Just streams no I know what team it is.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Playing as Mike Harbon, Justin Frossberg, Steve Desager, Alex ty Shirt.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Here we go.
Speaker 6 (36:35):
Can I just add what are the Jets? Is a
very philosophical question. We could go all night on that one.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
This is about individuals. This is the time for what
individual achievement and individuals?
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Here we go. I'll start you off with an easy one.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Look, I never liked it here, and I'll be gone
soon enough. This was terrible. I have nothing to add
to my secret gear Rogers Paul memories. And you only
have four targets in the entire city. None of them
have a Starbucks inside.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Who am I? Who is Aaron Rodgers?
Speaker 1 (37:06):
It's not Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
Well, until the dearth of you know, locations to go
and spend money, I was gonna say it was Miami
and Tyreek Hill.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
Obviously with the Starbucks reference, it's Pete Carroll in advance
of his Chicago.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
I never liked it here. I'll be gone soon enough.
This was terrible.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I have nothing to add to my secret room of
football memories. And you only have four targets in the
entire city, and none of them have a Starbucks inside.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Oh, it's Captain Kirk.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
Yes, I am pen Roethlis, I am Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Kirk Cousins, very good, my.
Speaker 4 (37:48):
Secret football rooms, five coal bucks.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Just gotta wait until the end and then you give
your aunts wait till only get through everything and get.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
It.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
Really doesn't matter if we keep doing this every season,
because you're never gonna listen to me, Dad, Who am.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
I should do her Sanders close clothes?
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Stephen Jones, Yes, I am Stephen Jones. Yes, very good, Mike,
very nice, very nice. Guys.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Look, I don't know what to do. I don't know
what to say, and I mean not in this conversation.
I mean I don't know what to do on the field.
Everyone says every decision I make is wrong. I mean
it's not too far from the truth, but it's not
all the time, just most of the time. And no
one talks about the good games I have every four
or five weeks. But I'm sure with seven or eight
new voices in my head next season, I'll be able
(38:46):
to streamline things and just play football.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
Your Rogers. It could be the top pick that I was.
Speaker 6 (38:51):
Who am I?
Speaker 3 (38:57):
Jeff Fisher not Genas.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
It's not if there was a seven and nine reference,
it would be Jeff Fisher.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
It's not a Rogers and nine. Mike Tomlin. It's not
Mike Tomlin, is it? Mike is not Mike Bears. You
are close. It wasn't your effort for U San Dhark.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
No close, You said, Bess, Yes, Alex, I am Caleb Williams.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
You never believe me, Jason.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
As soon as you asked the last question, I looked
at just and said, who's Jerry jones Son?
Speaker 3 (39:31):
That I should have just said that.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
All right, good, You're good.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
You're good was in the form of a Jeopardy like question,
so it worked, well, very good, All right, here we go.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Look, guys, when I got here, things were bad, but
then everything changed and.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
It actually got worse.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
I didn't think it could be worse than where I
was before, but then you fired the guy who traded
for me. You know what, this whole thing is stupid.
I'm gonna go get a chiloopa am I Yes, I am,
Davante Adams.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
He's got the taco bell in his house. Very nice.
Tells me that Frostburg's just keep going to say Aaron
Rodgers every single.
Speaker 6 (40:10):
Teams but no Starbucks machine Jason, it's gonna hit at
some point, It's true.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
Just got to wait it out while people are lurking
behind you.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
All right, last one, Hey man, I'm entertaining. Wide Receivers
love me, defensive backs love me. No one keeps both
teams in the game like I do. And now I
can't beat out or I get bench for the two
worst quarterbacks in the NFL who were both on this team.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
Who am I?
Speaker 4 (40:39):
Aaron Rodgerson, Rodgers, Fitzpatrick.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
No, he hasn't played in six years. Wide receivers love me.
Defensive backs love me. No one keeps both teams in
the game.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Like I do.
Speaker 6 (40:58):
Ge, No, gee, No, The answer is actually any Raiders,
clear famous.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
The answer is Jameis Winston. Big coaching story in the
NFL coming up next.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
This is Fox Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
They've blown out to see for the most part, and
it all depends on the wins. Clearly, it's not happening
now here, not getting that big break, which is what
we need. And it is a really scary situation. And
all our thoughts, all our hopes here with everybody that's
being affected by this, get to safety. I keep going
back and seeing the Steve Gutenberg interview. He's moving people's
(41:34):
cars so they can get emergency trucks down down the streets,
they can help people. It is that kind of scary night.
And all our thoughts here with you, guys, and all
all great thoughts and prayers are the first responders who
are out there trying to make things safe and rescue
people and get them to safety.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
O the notices of the red flag warning going up
early and saying over the overnight's actually the worst to come,
that WINS could get upwards of seventy miles in hour.
Already pretty brisk earlier in the day, and certainly we're
seeing the how quickly this is spreading all the way
over pH and towards the ocean. It's uh, you know,
(42:12):
evacuations and all sorts of the cities up and along
that area of the coast.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
Very scary circumstances.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
So yeah, go ahead, justin tip of the cap to
the badass firefighters. Yeah, no question. Yeah, just watching watching
this unfold and trying to keep calm and getting folks
out of there.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
It is really terrifying.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
I mean, the stuff you always see in movies and
television shows depicting the the worst of natural disasters and
and right now we're watching it play out live on TV.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Just scary stuff.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
And and for those that have undertaken that as their vocation, uh,
you can't say thank you enough.
Speaker 1 (42:52):
No again, We'll keep you updated on here. Hopefully we
get some good news. Hopefully the winds start helping out
and start blowing out to sea and and and they
can try to get this under control. Over three thousand
acres have burned so far, and many people have lost
their homes, and it's it's just a really difficult situation
right now. And and uh, you know, all the good karma,
all the good thoughts, uh, they can use them.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Uh, but look, our business here is sports.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
It's our job to get you uh distracted and and
and talk about stuff while while while bad stuff is
going on in the world. And that's what we try
to do every single night. And uh now we're going
to continue to do our jobs here by talking about
the coaching openings in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (43:31):
I thought we were gonna laugh at the Jets if
we we laugh at.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
The Jets every night, like that's every night many but.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
It keeps on giving.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
I mean, I've been told by a lot of doctors
other than cutting my carbs and making sure I get
more exercise, that I also need to laugh loudly, uh
and raucously several times a day.
Speaker 3 (43:51):
So you know what I do. I think of the Jets,
and then I think of the You're a Bears finger
just as big of a train wreck as my team is.
You don't need you don't need to.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
Come over and laugh. Laugh on your own team, Stay
on your own property there, don't don't come, don't there's.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
A fence between stay on your side. I think about
my team, and I'm reduced to tears.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
Good fences make good neighbors. You stay on your side
of the fence and left.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
And I'll stay my side of the fence and laugh.
Shames your time.
Speaker 4 (44:20):
No, it's not even laughable anymore. I mean, you got
guys that are lying season, digging hole. This is the
greatness of this Earlier today, George McCaskey, Oh, it was
the worst when all those Lions fans came to town
and then people are calling into the score, a guy
from the from one of the casinos, like, yeah, George
mccasky actually sold me his box for the game against
(44:41):
the Lions, Like, shut up, George telling you man, you.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
Got plenty of You got plenty of property on your side.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
Fens the leg that brings infinite sadness.
Speaker 1 (44:50):
You got a hammock in the back. You have a
little bit of a creak going on. You got plenty
of property and plenty of stuff the left left. But
when you examine the job openings, right, this is the
kind of year it is in the NFL. Every off
season is different because it operates at a different level
of stardom and help. Right, Some years you think about
(45:14):
it with the NFL draft. Some years, the first round
of the NFL Draft is ripe with quarterbacks. There's so
many to take, and there's five going in the first
twenty picks, and you can solve all your problems because
there's guys out there. You can get bo Nick's late
in the first round. Look at me through twenty five
touchdowns his rookie year.
Speaker 5 (45:30):
Right.
Speaker 1 (45:30):
Some years are like that. Some years aren't. And if
you need a quarterback, well you still got to take one,
because on picking fifth, we.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
Need a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (45:38):
I don't like the guys, Well, you got to take
somebody because there's nobody else out there. You're beholden to.
Who is available at that time. Right some years, the
first round of the draft is great for quarterbacks, other
years it's not.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
The openings in the NFL right now are six.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
They are the Jets, the Bears, the Raiders, the Jaguars,
the Saints, and the Patriots. Just like Nick Packai like
to say doing his tail of the tape for the
last twenty five years, there are no winners here. This
is about as depressing a list of teams as you
(46:17):
could get to if you are looking for a head
coach or a head coach who's looking to get that
next gig back in the NFL, because honestly, none of
these jobs are great right now. I'll tell you there's
one that stands out a little bit more than oother,
but maybe because they're just the cleanest mess out of
all of them, where the rest of are just absolute
met there's somewhat of a clean mess.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
But think about it. Are you going into the Jets
and winning?
Speaker 1 (46:43):
No, you're not. You got questions at quarterback, You've never won.
The only person getting this job is someone who has
zero options elsewhere. Hey, I'm either the Jets head coach
or I'm staying a defensive coordinator somewhere the Bears an
absolute mess. You don't know who you're answering to, who's
running the team to get in charge of Caleb Williams,
it's a mess. The Raiders, you have nobody. You have
(47:04):
no quarterback, you have no running backs, you don't have
a plan. You're you're look you're looking to try to
get into next year where there's no there's no hope
of winning because you're stuck in a division where all
the three other teams are better than you are. The
Patriots are at the bottom of the barrel. They probably
have the worst roster in the entire NFL. Maybe Drake
(47:26):
May is okay, but outside of that, your team is
absolutely terrible. The cupboard is empty. Bill Belichick made sure
to leave it that way. The Jaguars, you had Shad
Cohn say on a zoom call today when Trent balkis
sitting next to him, Hey, if the next head coach
comes in and wants to make change in the front
office and he makes a good point, I'll listen to him.
(47:46):
Trent Balky is sitting right next to him while Shad
Cohn is saying this, and I'm like, this is the Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
You don't want to go into war. That was great.
Speaker 1 (47:53):
Working for Shad Cohn is like working for what he
Johnson were, just like working for Jerry Jones.
Speaker 3 (47:57):
You're not winning there.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
You just have an average quarterback in Trevor Lawrence congratulates
on the birth of that kid. Though, Trevor, you have
an average quarterback. You're not winning. Your rosters on the
way down and the Saints they're probably one of the
two or three worst teams in the NFL, and you
have no hope at quarterback. You're stuck with Derek Carr.
You don't have enough weapons. At running back. You have
enough weapons, you have, the defense is not enough. You
are at the bottom of the barrel. And and all
(48:21):
six of these openings, I don't know where anybody can
come in and say, Hey, next year, we're going to
contend for the playoffs. We're gonna be a five hundred
ish team, and we're gonna be eight to nine, nine
and eight. We're gonna come late in December and at
least be in the In the hunt graphic on the
side when they say, oh, let's take a look at
the standings right now, it's the red people are here.
Speaker 3 (48:37):
Week sixteen of the NFL None of these jobs are great.
Speaker 1 (48:41):
This is as hard a list as you're ever gonna see,
because usually there's at least a couple of teams where, hey,
this team is really good. This coach left, this coach retired,
this coach was fired because because the owner thinks, hey,
we're not achieving high enough. And even though we made
it to the playoffs this year, usually there's a couple
of those teams.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
There's none there. Ben Johnson may look at this list
and go, this is worse than it was.
Speaker 1 (49:03):
A year ago. I'm gonna stay in Detroit another year.
I know, I gotta make sure this offense keeps humming
and we score a seventy touchdowns again. But what how
where am.
Speaker 3 (49:12):
I gonna go? I'm not a miracle worker. I don't
want to go to any of these teams.
Speaker 1 (49:15):
Like all of these openings are bad, like you're gonna
get And the thing is, there's not like there's a
bunch of guys ready to come in to have great
track records that hey they sat out a cycle or
they needed a fresh start. No, these are all guys
that flamed out as head coaches that aren't gonna get
an another look, but they will now, only because there's
not a lot of candidates out there besides Johnson and Vrabel.
(49:36):
Arthur Smith is gonna get another look. Matt Naggy is
getting interviews. Rex Ryan was interviewed by the Jets today.
Not only are the opening's bad, but the people to
fill them. There's nobody there that you can come in
and say, hey, I feel great putting you in charge
of my program, and I know we're gonna get to
where I need to get. This is a really difficult year, man.
Speaker 4 (49:56):
The other is, you know, coming out of all of
these exit interviews, you know, we keep waiting for the
big surprise because at this point, I guess Mayo is
to a degree, we're more surprised that Brian Dables still
has a job, that Shane Steichen still has a job.
After the exit interview and all the clips of Mike
McDaniel today, how do you keep him around? Yeah, guys
were laid all the time.
Speaker 3 (50:17):
We oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, But what are you
gonna do?
Speaker 1 (50:21):
Yeah, you know it's so Chris Greer, everybody Chris Greer,
your GM and action, right.
Speaker 4 (50:25):
So there's another empty suit between Greer and him in
terms of how they operated and were able to keep
things going. But it's six and thirty two. You're looking
at nineteen percent, right, still waiting for that one big
the other shoe to drop, and it doesn't look like
it's gonna a couple of the Again, the surprises are
the guys that kept their jobs because these other six.
(50:48):
I mean, you're gonna talk to the Rizzler. I mean,
sure he's now got an interview with the Jets.
Speaker 1 (50:54):
At least at least have a good note. What can
you bring to our team? I got a great interview.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
Man.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
They called me the riz or the Wrizzler. Oh hey,
that's correct. That's better than anybody else we talk to.
That's better than Rex Ryan Man. All Right, we're good.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
We like that. This guy's got a cool nickname. Let's
hire him.
Speaker 4 (51:07):
And I can probably endorse a double chunk Chun cookie.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Yeah, but all these jobs suck.
Speaker 4 (51:13):
I mean, like if the Bears at least there's a
couple of pieces of personnel, far from perfect, but at
least a couple of pieces of personnel you like everybody else.
You look at her und going, I don't know, Kamara
has hurt all the time, Drake May, I'm gonna like
the quarterback there? What else I got? Jets, Jets, Bears,
the Raiders. I like Brock Bauers. I like my tight
(51:35):
end and whatever Max Crosby is if he's still here
and does a demand to trade, and in Jacksonville. I
like Brian Thomas Junior.
Speaker 3 (51:42):
I like Tank Bigsby because his name's Bigsby.
Speaker 4 (51:46):
And then you got one or two pieces on defense,
but not a whole lot to write home about.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
No of these teams, right, if you say, okay, what's
the best opening? Now, I mean none of them are
like that, and it's not none of them are great,
But what's the best opening? I would have to say
because of the franchise quarterback they have, it's only been
in the league a year, they have a lot of
young talent, and they're probably the cleanest mess.
Speaker 3 (52:10):
Right.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
It's still a mess, like stuff is still all over
the place, but it's not like a teenager's room, like there's, okay,
this is I can see this somewhat of a clean mess.
Speaker 3 (52:19):
I go with the Bears.
Speaker 1 (52:21):
I mean really, I mean I'm not just saying this
for your team, buddy, but the Bears. I mean, when
you have a quarterback that's your franchise guy. Okay, everything
else can be figured out, right. The Jets don't have that,
the Raiders don't have that. New England maybe, but really,
I mean, you're gonna trust Drake mate, No, I mean Jacksonville.
Trevor Lawrence is just a guy, right, He's just a guy.
(52:41):
You're gonna come in and say, Okay, here's a league
average quarterback that people think is better than they are,
and we're paying them a lot of money. How am
I gonna work? And New Orleans you got Derek Carr.
So what's the quarterback situation that you'd like the most
out of all of them? It's Chicago because Caleb Williams
did flash many times this year. Was he always great?
Speaker 4 (52:59):
No?
Speaker 1 (53:00):
Did he start out slow way too much yet? Absolutely?
But he did flash and shows it. Hey, he has
that kind of talent and you've only seen him for
one year, so you haven't seen him for enough to
know that, Okay, he's no good or he's just a
guy like Trevor Lawrence is. So of all those jobs,
because of that, Chicago is the most attractive.
Speaker 3 (53:16):
But still you don't know who you're answering to.
Speaker 1 (53:19):
Is it Poles?
Speaker 4 (53:20):
Is?
Speaker 3 (53:20):
I mean you told you, Hey, I.
Speaker 4 (53:22):
Don't want any part of it, even if I know
ill in love with the bits and pieces of the
offense when it actually worked and you're trying.
Speaker 1 (53:29):
To and you're trying to win in that division where
everybody else made the playoffs and everybody else is gonna
be good next year, but still of that because you
have Caleb Williams.
Speaker 3 (53:37):
The Bears are the best, opening.
Speaker 4 (53:40):
Good times, the best. There's us and then there's how
many feet?
Speaker 1 (53:46):
Yeah, well, I mean I know that, I meant that,
meant to really just pick you up and perk you up.
But I understand if you're if you're very word of
the day is tepid. If you feel very tepid about
my endorsement of the Bears.
Speaker 4 (53:57):
Well, I mean because you're doing a tongue in cheek
because you're also trying to say we're terrible. But let
me take a sledgehammer to harmon while I'm at it.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
We're terrible, Hey, we're not as terrible as those guys.
Speaker 4 (54:09):
You guys are more taunting because you have a couple
of guys that might be good.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Hey, look we're bad.
Speaker 3 (54:15):
Well I'm not.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
I'm not gonna lie to you, but boy, these other
guy teams are all worse. We're head and shoulders above that.
Just so you know, come coach us
