You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Tabso tap A long
time ago.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Oh, I remember a month ago when we predicted it
would happen. Oh tips, you had a job at this
time yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Tip.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Maybe if you had unfolded your arms more you had
a job.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Tip, maybe you would want.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Something else in the black wardrobe you would haven't jumped.
Or maybe if you would just bleep in one game
one against the Pacers, you oh made. I'm just saying, maybe,
Mike Harmon, that was slight.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
D I heard the break screech. Now let me tell
you something, top TIMO. It was a full work up.
Get the crowd excited, and then get.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Bay Fox Sports Radio. Welcome inside the Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. Over forty years, ti
Iraq has been helping customers find the right tires for
how what where? They drive, shipped fast and free, backed
by free road hatch protection with convenient installation options like
mobile tire installation. Tire rack dot Com is the way
tire buy should be. Well, yes, you thought, what kind
(01:52):
of basketball headlines are we gonna have to get us
the game one of the NBA Finals, Enter the Knicks
and Tom Thibodeaux fired after the best run in the
last twenty five years, losing in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now,
let me just say what Mike Harmon alluded to a
few moments ago. Okay, I am not surprised. We talked
(02:13):
about this a couple of weeks ago. I am not surprised. Right,
There's lots of different things. But the first thing I
will tell you is this, Right before you want to
dive into the roster and defense and Karl Anthony Towns,
before you want to dive into and Who's Next and
all the stuff, all the we're on our test to
metal world pieces. I want to be that ready for
(02:34):
the smoke, right, what a campaign, dude. I'll tell you.
The most fun Well, the most fun thing today was
watching the Rockies win a series. The second most fun
thing today was watching the number of people who trended
because fans were saying, what if this guy was the
knicks next head coach? Right, here's bet a world peace,
here's Rick Patino.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Come on, what you do? Dial it?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Doc Rivers is out there, don't.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Don't you soach me?
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Don't you say?
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Come on, man, that.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
That would be the greatest thing for the man for
the furthering of the show during the long arduous run
that is the NBA regular season, to be able to
chronicle that on a day to day basis and mine, Come.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
On, I know you and I are at Odds Frostburg
with the Mets Dodgers coming up in a few minutes. Yeah,
that's over the line, man, that I wouldn't wish Doc
Rivers on you. I wouldn't risk Doc Rivers on any
but I'm pretty I wouldn't wish Doc Rivers on the
White Sox. That's how much I wouldn't wish Doc Rivers
on anybody. You know what, He might actually eke out it,
although Venable is doing a pretty good job with a
(03:39):
bad roster, and they at least come out and fight
these days.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
But fault's fault. That's all his fall bring the hometown kid,
Doc Rivers home.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Come on, let's go before you get to everything. There
is a really there's a really easy way that I
think people are just blowing past. Which is what And
you know why the Knicks fired Tibbs today after their
greatest season in twenty five years. Think for a second
right outside, you know, big NBA fans, we all watch
Eastern Conference Finals. Yes, the Knicks lost. It was really difficult.
(04:14):
Their flaws were all exposed. But just think about being
around the Knicks for the last couple of days with
this right, the Knicks lose and it is heartbreaking. And
not only that they are not over a Game one
that is going down in the annals of NBA history
as the biggest blown loss in the history of the game.
(04:36):
Can't I can't overstate that enough. The Knicks lost Game one,
blowing a lead in the final minute that nobody in
the history of the game is blown.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Right.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
We went back and looked the record fourteen hundred and
fourteen wins and no losses when the NBA was taken
keeping track of this right from the mid nineties, Right,
fourteen fourteen to zero with a nine point lead and
fifty seconds left to go on regulation and you know what,
you know, a team has never blown a lead like that.
Even before that, because teams didn't hit threes for the
for the early part of the nineties and the eighties,
(05:08):
they didn't take that many shots. Before that, there was
no three point shot. So I guarantee you nobody in
the one hundred some odd years since since Nasmith said, hey,
cut the holes out of the peach basket, eased to
get the basketball back.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Since that, no one has blown a lead. This was.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
So yeah. This is an all time worst loss in
the NBA. This is a loss that stays with the
team and franchise forever. It's Reggie Miller on steroids because
this was Hey, at least the Knicks won that series
at Reggie Miller made the choke sign. This was blowing
Game one watching Halliburton's miracle shot fall doing the choke sign.
(05:46):
It is an all time embarrassing Game one and series
loss for the Knicks. You're naive if you think a
team can just sit there and say, well, we'll get
him next year. We didn't have as good a roster.
The Pacers were a better team. No, some losses you
can't come back from. Because they're just that bad. Not
all losses are created equal. Some losses are worse than others.
(06:06):
Some losses make the worst losses look like a kid
given out candy. This was one of those Game one
We've never seen it before, a team has never had
that happen. When something like that happens, you can't just
bring the guys back next year. You can't just say, okay,
roll it back, we'll make some There needs to be repercussions.
There needs to be fall up. We told you after
(06:27):
Game one. If they lose this series, the guys are
gonna look at is gonna be Tibbs and Karl Anthony Towns?
And who are the guys? TIBs and Karl Anthony Towns?
All the Karl Anthony Towns criticism the last few days,
and now Tibbs gets fired today. Sometimes a loss is
just so bad you can't bring Tibbs back because he's
a memory and a reminder, an every day walking institution
(06:49):
of we blew that lead against the Pacers. We're gonna
blow it again. You're gonna see this in the playoffs.
Every time a team is up nine with a minute
left to go, Reggie Miller is gonna say, remember the
Pacers next in twenty twenty five. Reggie Miller's gonna be
ninety eight years old, that like thirty years from now,
and it's gonna be saying, remember.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
When the Bass did it back in twenty five with
Halla Burton.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
That's exactly how it's gonna go. You can't bring them back.
That's why I'm not surprised at all. The TIBs got
fired because this loss and then the series loss was
just so bad you have to start anew You have
to start and say, Okay, we gotta move away from
this because this is just gonna hang over the franchise.
I mean, it's gonna hang over the franchise enough already,
but bringing back the same cast of characters, it's like
(07:29):
a cloud, like the cloud that follows pig Pen, you
know in the in the Peanuts, Like that's what's gonna happen,
and that that's why the Knicks had no choice, And
I understand it. I'm not surprised with the fire and
Tips because some losses are just so bad you have
to move on and start new, and this is one
of those losses. I like that you said, and the
Peanuts kind of like you were going, it's not said
(07:50):
not just peanuts, the peanuts.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Look, it's it's the thing we've.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Talked about for a month is that you had eighty
two games to try to see what else was on
the roster instead of grinding out win in game fifty five, right,
fifty seven whatever.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Middle of the season, Hey you play forty two. Well,
at no point did you develop continuity. And we saw
it exacerbated when Brunson had to leave a game for
a short period with an injury. It was like, they
look absolutely lost. Right. You had several turnovers in a row,
a couple of shot clock violations, a lot of pointing
(08:28):
as if it was the Spider Man meme come to life.
No continuity there. And so when all of a sudden
you get to the playoffs and it's like, all right,
we need some depth. Cat picked up his requisite too,
silly falls early, so we need to go to the bench.
Oh wait, now we can't use him because he can't
play defense and he's in foul trouble. All of those
(08:49):
things to say, it's an imperfectly structured roster. And we've
been clear about that, talking about that the whole season.
For those that live and die by.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Jason's Knicks fandom and Mets fandom, but Knicks fandom.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
We appreciate you being part of the show. That means
you listen a lot if you get triggered by it,
So thank you. Just stay with us because it's gonna
it's gonna be a wild off season. But for this move,
you say, hey, congratulations on a job done. Here's a
giant pile of money to go out the door, and
you try to figure out what's next. The roster is
(09:26):
gonna go through an overhaul, and Rose is certainly on
the under the microscope here as to what kind of
depth and where we're looking at for the NBA and
things changing with these two teams that'll square off starting Thursday,
when you're running ten sometimes eleven deep right and fast
break points and ability to get out of that versus
(09:48):
all right, slow the ball down and take nothing from brunts,
and you can decide whether you want him on your
top five in the game today. Jason put that poll
question out on air last week. But it's just that
idea of all right, how do you restructure this and
what's the direction going forward? And with Thibodeaux as the
face the gruff, non responsive in many ways coach of
(10:13):
this squad in New York, that's just not gonna stand right.
The expectation really went through the roof after beating the
hated Celtics, and that game one loss will forever stain
whatever legacy. Now Cat got him fired twice so that
we should remember that. It's like this guy again, all right,
(10:36):
and you know all all the things we've talked about.
You know, you can only hide him so long, and defensively,
that was the reason he didn't fit with what Minnesota
was trying to do. And you thought you'd be able
to piece it together. But again, if you're only gonna
run six seven deep and you don't have big men
on the bench to spell adequately, and you can only
(10:58):
cover up defensive lacking uh issues by Brunson and Cat
so long before you're exposed. And Indiana did it. So
now it's to the next iteration of the Knicks. And
it was fun watching all the names. As you said,
the bell odds great, The betting odds had I think
thirty five guys on it.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Oh yeah, yeah, freight, where we're done? Where was Stephen A.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Smith?
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Where where was he was he?
Speaker 2 (11:21):
In the thing? Take no.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Hold on a second, let me way behind, Doc Rivers.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Oh he is.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
No, but look, but just think about it because normally
we see it with players, right, usually when when a
manager oversees a collapse and a team loses, it's ay,
we collapsed over the course of the end of the
regular season. We collapsed in the playoffs, and that's why
coaches get fired. This is a one series thing, but
it had We've seen it. Sometimes you don't realize you
(11:49):
see it, but you do. I'll go back to last
year in Major League Baseball, right, so let's me bring
up pee A Lonzo's home run. Devin Williams one of
the best closers of Major League baseball, right, one of
the best. Now, he was hurt a little bit last year,
but guy, give up one home run all season. He
is as lights out a closer as there was. Right, fastball,
change up, that's all you needed, right, That's all Mariano
Rivera needed. But he gives up the big home run
(12:09):
to Alonso in the ninth inning of a game. The
Brewers had a two to nothing lead and they were
moving on to the Nlds, and they gave up four
runs in the inning and they lost sometimes a loss
is so bad you couldn't bring him back. Right, You
couldn't bring Devin Williams back. You couldn't bring the You
couldn't bring the guy back because it's just the loss
against the Mets would hang over. You don't know, is
he's still gonna be the same guy. He's gonna be
(12:30):
thinking about that loss. It's a daily reminder of the
home run because that home run was such a big deal.
It wasn't just hey, he gave up a home run.
They lost a game. This was ninth inning. Man, come in,
shut the door. It's a two run lead. It was
so bad the Brewers had to move on from him, Right.
It's not like he wanted a big contract. It's not
like there was a situation where he's gonna hit free
agency or where the Brewers knew we can't go, we
(12:52):
can't move on with him, and we have to deal him,
so they traded him to the Yankees.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Right.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
I mean, that's really why it happens with players. Most
guys at miss field goals, guys that give up big
home runs, got guys that that that melt down in
a pitching situation, Right when when you Darvish couldn't come
back to the Dodgers after that big World Series melt
down and allegedly was tipping pitches like that's it, Like,
you can't come back after this. Usually it's players, but
(13:18):
this was such a big deal and and you know
where are you gonna go? You can't bring the head
coach back because that's too much a reminder of how
bad things were. And you just need a fresh start,
no matter who it is. You'd a fresh start with
this team and go forward because it's young, you're building.
And again that's why I'm not surprised at all that
this happened. It's the negative part of being the face
(13:39):
of the franchise. They become the face of the franchise,
futility in fifty two years, the foff as.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
It were, Jason all that said, he got fired because
the nick sucked.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
They stop that.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
We were there were three teams left and we were
one of them. We were in the final three.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
We're going to the finals, and we told you no, no, no,
you got to you're not getting past the pacers.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
All right, righty stephen A is sixty to one, sixty.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
To one, Doc Rivers.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Really he's not on the short list I'm looking at here.
I got Johnny Bright from the She's not the Favorite.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Find a new list.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Wait, stephen A. Smith has shorter odds than Doc Rivers.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
No, at least from Bravada what they had put up earlier. Then. Well,
I mean they also had Patrick Ewing at plus nine
point fifty with Sam Cassel and Mike Budenolzer. Oh wow, okay,
all right, all right, Mark Jackson at fourteen to one. Okay,
Jeff Van Gundy return at twenty five to one.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Stephen A what do you think of the What do
you think of the NIXT performance tonight? You know they're
they're three and one, their first loss of the season.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
It was appalling. It was atrocious. It was depressing. It
was disgusting, distressing, it was frightful. It was ghastly. It
was horrifying. It was shocking. It was ugly. It was unpleasant.
It was abominable. It was repulsive.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
It was uncited, it was grungy, it was deplorable like that.
I mean, I want to see that, just to see
the postgame Prescott.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I think that's also how he described the press release
in which they announced this. Instead of having the guts
to do it, personally.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
So I'm telling you reason number one. That's why sometimes
there's sauces you just can't come back from if you're ready.
You know what at the you know, Crosbury, your Lakers
were watching the playoffs for like a month on Magic
Johnson's yacht before the Knicks got eliminated.
Speaker 3 (15:29):

TIBs getting fired by the mix because hey, you needed
(16:34):
a basketball Jones to get you to Game one of
the Finals.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
We got it.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
We got TIBs out.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
He had a good run.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Yeah, and listen, just think when it's a when it's
a when it's a four game suite by the thunder,
what we're gonna be talking about. Who the Knicks head
coach is gonna be, It's gonna be, it's gonna be
stretched into the office. Stop saying Doc River America.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Let's get doc trending.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Stop saying doc stop with it. No, no, no, we
don't need that.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Man.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
I'm strag Madison, square guard, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Hashtag Alonso RBI single, Hashtago, Tani strikeout looking, let's hashtag
all those things because all those things are just.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Don't have a kid he can put on the sideline
that would be ready to coach. Wow, now that that's
next level right there.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Call her buddy Evan Rosenbloom at TMZ and you come
up with something there that's outstanding.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
I got six guys he can he can send up there.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Which which of the sun gets the role and we'll
have more than the tib story coming up in a
few minutes. But you know, this is one thing where
you know, you know, we're in the point of the
calendar where we're waiting for football, right like like here
I get you know, the NBA Finals are coming. Tims
gets fired. You know, baseball is is you know, we
we we hit the first third mark of the season
(17:49):
and we're getting on. We're seeing how many games the Rockies, Well, congratulations,
Rockies won a serious night. Yeah, but we're in that
part where we're waiting for football, right, We're waiting for
football or waiting for training camp. You know, it's it's
beginning of June and it's okay, how much longer you
know the players are off, but all right, they're gonna
be here soon and we're gonna be able to pay.
We're waiting for football, which means this John hu Smith
(18:10):
story is way too overcovered, and but it makes up
for being overcovered by being stupid. So there's that as well. Well.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
I don't think it's so. I don't think it's overcovered though,
because it really does. You got two franchises, one that
is being held hostage for that other story that's still lingering, right,
I mean because because look, if we don't have John
hus Smith and you want to talk football, what we
got Deon Sanders was a gift yesterday, right, and then
otherwise it's hey, Aaron Rodgers, did he lick his finger
(18:42):
and hold it up to see which way the wind
was blowing? I mean, that's it. That's all we got
right now. But the John new Smith is like the wait,
are the Dolphins like giving up? It's taking It's overcovered,
and it's over stupid. It's both of those things, all right,
I like over stupid. We're gonna pat in that.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Last week we have had the story that you know,
here's big NFL trade that could becoming at John Whusmith,
one of the best tight ends in the NFL coming
up for a contract extension. Dolphins potentially don't want to
pay it, so they were talking trade with the Steelers.
This makes no sense. We talked about it at the time.
Why because the Dolphins don't have another tight end on
the roster catch balls. You're gonna say goodbye to a
guy called eighty eight passes last year.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Okay, you're tanking.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
This would be stupid for you to do unless you're
tanking for the Steelers. You still don't have a quarterback man.
You're talking about trading for John Newsmith and giving him
money here with anybody to throw the football because you're
waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers wants to come play
for you.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Well, was this a move for Mason rudolphs we get
we get the duel tight end between him and friar Mouth.
You only have to complete a ball between five and
ten yards. I mean, come on it, it might actually
be genius.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
They called Mason Rudolphin and said, hey, Mason, what do
you need to succeed this year?
Speaker 2 (19:49):
I need another tight end?
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Right, so you already have Friarmuth, who is pretty good. No,
we're adding John hus Smith right, and you don't have
a quot So this is stupid. Okay, then, okay, we
get the story earlier today at a chefter reports the
deal is off. Deal is off. John new Smith is
not getting del That's not gonna happen. We're not gonna
have John new Smith going to the Steelers. Okay, the
trade is off, all right, great, and then a few
(20:11):
hours later, oh no, the trade is back on. Okay,
now can we stop with the stupid because now we're
back to the story from last week where it's just stupid.
Because now, okay, now we're back to like each each
side realized, okay, this is kind of stupid, and you know,
we don't want to be seen as tanking. We don't
want this to happen. Let's call this off. No, no, no, no,
let's go back and now let's do it. So now
the trade is back on again, and they could be
(20:31):
and there it's back on in which they're talking about it,
not back on in which they've made the trade.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
So we can go.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Back to our take of last week that this is
stupid because the Dolphins are only doing this, that they're
tanking and the Steelers are doing it. Who knows why.
I don't know why we don't have a quarterback. But
now let's get another tight end. Is that gonna work
with Aaron Rodgers? Does Aaron Rodgers never really threw the
ball to one tight end. Let let alone, he's gonna
throw it to two guys. Come on, man, what is
what is happening?
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Being?
Speaker 1 (20:55):
Teams have lost their minds. That's why this entire story
it was stupid then okay, clear clear has prevailed.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Now it's stupid again. Yeah, looking at it from the
Dolphins side, because they've got so much swirling. Right, you
had the season with Tua tonguea Vailoa missed some games,
but all in all, you know he's ready to roll.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
You've got tyreek Hill who's been on a pr Let's
clean up a bunch of mess in the background.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
Here is Hey, I'm happy to be here. But is
he a post June first? Right now we're June third?
Is he gonna get dealt? Right? There's been a lot
of talk about that. And Jalen Wattle disappeared a year ago, right,
his numbers were down. So is the the dooom come
off the rose? That was Mike McDaniel, Right, he was
supposed to revolutionize thing. He was the super genius. He
(21:43):
staks and that's with the top five running back in
a chan Right. So, so you've got a passing game
that isn't working. You're not setting the league up fire,
you're getting passed by the Patriots in their rebuild and
whatever Vrabel's able to do. And the Yets might have
more explosive plays in their offense with Justin Fields under
(22:05):
center than what you've been building for several years. So yeah,
let's trade an all Pro guy who caught eighty eight
balls and kept the chains moving to at least give
you a puncher's chance at a bunch of games.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
So none of it, none of it makes sense. None
of this makes that now, unless, hey, you're tanking. If
you're the Dolphins, which, wow, man, a year ago they
were the up and coming I still can't get over
the fact that they were so a year ago. Now
is watch out for the Dolphins. Their speed, they're revolutionized
in the NFL. And now maybe they're tanking. Maybe maybe
they're gonna wind up tanking, and the Steelers just continue
(22:38):
to prove that, Look, we really don't know what we're doing.
We just come to work every day and just you know,
who knows, We don't know. We whatever decide whoever we
decide that sounds good to us, we're gonna do whether
or not it makes sense for the team or not.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Yeah, as long as you need to do.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Without a quarterback. It's absolutely fine. Don't worry about it.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
Do you think instead of the sign like the at
Notre Dame where it's just play like a champion today
that everybody has to slide about, it's like we're not
having a losing season and you slap that on your
way through the door to go decide how you're building
your roster.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Yeah, they just go five hundred. Five hundred is our chat.
Like every push up they finish eight, I'm willing to give.
I'm willing to get benefit that they go nine and eighty.
They go, okay, nine and eight, nine and eight, nine
and eight, I'm willing to say that they'll go that far.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
It's just amazing, though, right, and we see all sorts
of ridiculous trade trade offers and rumors and things out there,
and it's trying to go through and parse through the noise,
and usually it's pretty obvious when it's bogus. This one
has been reported very widely, and you've got two franchises
(23:45):
that seemingly are in no man's land, like the Rogers thing.
I think there's a handshake deal and eventually we get
to that point and now it's just everybody's being held
hostage in the news cycles.
Speaker 4 (23:58):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
And it gives us one thing that is a consistent thread,
waiting on OTAs into training camp, which is still along
seven eight weeks away. But this for the Dolphins, it
really makes no sense in any way, shape or form.
You're what you're tanking to get into the quarterbacks who
may or may not be any good Arch Manning, have
(24:21):
we seen enough? Yeah, he runs fast. That's the highest
compliment you can throw him right now. He's faster than
the other Mannings. I don't I don't think that's the
cell point for Hey, let's tank right. Every other quarterback
has a giant question mark and we're like, all right,
we're gonna pop them up because you know they may
(24:42):
get there, but none of them have the requisite starts. Right,
we always talk twenty five thirty be in the benchmark.
They all still have a lot of prove it. Rch
Manning is the king of that great pedigree, great program.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
Historically, it would say that he doesn't actually come out
even if he has a great season based on the
family's track record. Oh yeah, right, So I mean like
you may be raising and it's like, oh, we're number
one It's like, yeah, he's decided to go back to school.
Not damn it all the hell, especially especially coming out
of that Cooper Flag report that he reported he reportedly
made twenty eight to thirty million dollars. You're telling me
(25:18):
Arch isn't creeping up towards that money at Texas. Oh,
of course he is. Of course he is good.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
So you know the wait, I can stand another year
and do that when the rookie wage scale has dictated
by the NFL. What I stay here another year? I'm
better off.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon Live from the
Fox Sports Radio studio.
Speaker 2 (25:42):
Again, none of it.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
But if you're.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Tanking Dolphins, congratulations.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
We'll have more on Tom Thibodeau coming up in a
couple of seconds, but right now, time to find out
what's trending in the wide world of sports. A guy
who's been called the TIBs of Fox Sports Radio because
he's not working tomorrow either.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
It's deep to.
Speaker 6 (25:57):
Say they call me mister Tibbs. After five years in
New York, the Knicks fired their head coach Tom Thibodeau today.
Last summer, he signed a three year contract extension through
twenty twenty eight. New York's had back to back fifty
win seasons for the first time since nineteen ninety five,
and the Nicks just made the East Finals. Indiana's in
(26:17):
the NBA Finals starting Thursday at Oklahoma City, and then
Game two of the series will be Sunday. Indiana, by
the Way in the finals for the first time since
two thousand. Guard Tyrese Haliburton was born in two thousand three.
WNBA games tonight eight and oh Minnesota won again beating
Phoenix eighty eight sixty five. Indiana with a home win
over Washington eighty five seventy six. Caitlin Clark still out
(26:39):
with the string quad. The late game has Dallas at
one in six, leading at Seattle thirty eight to thirty
at the half. The Stanley Cup Finals starts Wednesday, Florida
at Edmonton. The NHL Awards by the Way will be
held just before game four of the series. US women's
soccer has won four nothing tonight over Jamaica at an
exhibition in Saint Louis. Number two see Carlos Alcarez won
(27:01):
his quarterfinal at the French Open, beating American Tommy Paul
in straight sets.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
For Vikings.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
Defensive end, Jim Marshall died at the age of eighty seven.
He played two hundred and seventy straight games with Minnesota
through nineteen seventy nine. As for the games in progress
in the major leagues, the Royals lead ten to seven
at Saint Louis in the bottom of the eighth. Mariners
and Orioles tied one to one bottom of the third.
(27:27):
Houston is even with Seattle for the moment in the
Al West standings. Houston has won three nothing at Pittsburgh,
beating Paul Skeins, who had eight strikeouts in eight innings.
But Skeens is four and six despite lowering his ERA
to two point h five.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
The Astros must have cheated steven.
Speaker 6 (27:44):
The Giants are up to nothing on the Padres in
the top of the fourth. A's out to an early
one nothing lead on the Twins bottom of the second.
The A's have lost eighteen of nineteen. Yay, but Colorado
won on the road again. You know, before last night
they were three and twenty eight in the road games
this year. They've won two straight at Miami three to two.
(28:05):
Tonight's final Rockies had ended in eight game losing streak.
Last night, Cubs won eight three at Washington. Cincinnati over
Milwaukee four to two. That ends the Brewers' eight game
winning streak. As Red center fielder TJ. Friedel robbed a
two run homer, catching the final out. The Yankees held
on three to two over Cleveland. The same to Devin Williams,
although he allowed to run in the ninth. Yankee closer
(28:27):
Luke Weavers on the injured list with a strain hamstring.
Bryce Harper of the Phillies returned after the Bruce delbo
and Tonight homered in the first. In fact, Philadelphia scored
six times in the top of the first and won
at Toronto eight three. That ends the Blue Jays five
game winning streak. Arizona and Tampa Bay each one. Angels
won in ten at Boston four to three. The White
Sox beat Detroit eight to one. The White Sox won
(28:51):
nothing in the six and beat a Tigers team that
entered with a record of forty and twenty one, while
the White Sox were.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Just eighteen and forty two.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
And we can update the game at Dodger Stadium first
and left.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
This is actual news.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
The Dodgers canceled batting practice because of pregame rain no
rain rece evening.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Well, now they're having batting practice in the first inning
and for Mets.
Speaker 6 (29:18):
The Tyler McGill show. Well, he's allowed four runs in
the first inning. And yeah there was the early home run,
the early run scored I should say by New York
the Lonzo RBI single set up by Clayton Kershaw, wild pitch.
But it's now Dodgers for one over the Mets. In
the bottom of the first, Max Munsey with a two
run homer, his eighth of the year.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Back to you, gee, thanks Steve, I appreciate that. Thanks.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
So remember it's ty lore correct because it's Tyler. But
every time I see his name and pause and the
other McGill is actually better. So you know, we have
the two McGill brothers, we have the one, and his.
Speaker 6 (29:55):
First inning is going down in some lore.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Yes, yes, nicely.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Gun.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Uh So, look, we talked about the big reason why
Tibbs got fired by the Knicks, because so stop with
that their better stop. Stop you upset the Laker fan.
Just stop.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
It has nothing to do with the Lakers. The Nicks.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
We were in the Eastern Conference finals. Man, it's not
like sixties.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
I thought you were beating the Pacers.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Dude, we were dude.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
You couldn't beat any but you couldn't get out of
the first round against a guy who shows up when.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
He feels starts with dude.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude. No, it's like, dude,
I want you to be serious.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Are you okay?
Speaker 1 (30:34):
You okay? Bro?
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Bro?
Speaker 3 (30:35):
You he was this guy.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Bro's gonna keep Pascal siakaming you.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
You okay? Bro? You You're cool. You're good. Bro.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
You guys got TIBs fired. The only well it look
five bombs in the bench.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
This is the only part of this that I'm upset
about today, because again I told you I wasn't surprised.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
I'm not uplook.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
The Knicks need a clean start because of this loss
was just so bad. I'm okay with the new direction,
and it's fine. Here's the only reason I hate Tibbs
getting fired because it gives the bleeping Pacers another w right,
because it was not only did we beat the Knicks,
not only did we win against our all time rival,
not only did we win in a way which embarrasses them.
(31:14):
We got through the choke sign again. Now Halliburton and
Reggie Miller can sign pictures together a card shows for
the next thirty years and make money. We'll split this money. No, no,
now it's oh, we got TIBs fired. Like it's another
win for the Pacers who win, and they win without
class and all, and they're moving on and now they're
just saying, oh, yeah, look now we got TIBs fired
(31:35):
and they're laughing going into the NBA Finals. That's the
only thing I'm upset about is that it gives the
Pacers another w.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Because they got TIBs fired. Well, but it was inevitable, right,
It's the Fano snap. And I guess if you can
trade on this, look, if they go out and get
absolutely curb stumped by OKC, it has its weight to
a point, right, because the sting of getting absolutely dominated
(32:05):
by SGA and the greatness that is the combination of
Chet and lou Dort will will send them into oblivion.
So the short lived successes of vanquishing the Knicks, it's
not really gonna stay. Now we see them in the
playoffs matched up again next year. Sure there's a lot
of run and you'll get some good b roll of
(32:27):
TIBs with his arms folded added Game one and the
crowd height video. There's no question about that. A distraught
Chalameat or Spike Lee or whatever else they do with
his little train conductor hat on, all of those things
will be there.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
But you can't live there like this.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
This is where you knew it was gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
The Knicks fan base was calling for change, and the obvious's.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Cat, which we talked about yesterday, we stayed on the
roster side because we'd been doing the coaching ability of
Tibbs even with that extension. So he goes into the
Business Hall of Fame. Now. But all of that to say,
it's it's you'll get over it. Why because you need
to claw back against the Dodgers. You have more pressing
(33:14):
issues now. You have to try to spoil kershaw day.
You can't worry about what what the uh the Pacers
did to your Knicks anymore.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Uh. Well, unfortunately this.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
Is a story. I mean, it's not only so much
I can do.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
This is I'm saying for your own person, is a
psychology of this that you have to I mean, you
have to let it go. You were ready for Kenny
Atkinson to be hired away from Cleveland or or whatever
might happen, right, I mean, it's it's inevitable.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Maybe maybe it is Doc Rivers, maybe it's Stephen A. Smith.
Maybe it's your guy Danny Hurley, because I know you
lit candles. You went down and found a bodega that
had Danny Hurley votive candles and lit those all across
your your little, uh you know, room with with Nick's memorabilia.
I have no doubt.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome. Jason Smith
Mike Harmon Live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming
up next, we got the play of the day, And
I didn't think you could have a quarterback controversy when
you sign a guide to one hundred million dollar contract,
But maybe that's going on in one NFL city.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
That's next right here, Jason to Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:25):

I don't we're not sure if the Rockies still have
a radio network, we can't play the Rockies highlight. So instead,
(36:07):
when you win by seven and you score seven two
things that hardly ever happened to this team, well you
get to be the play of the day. This sort
is smoke to left field and it's gonna love the world.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Ford Desito score, Ben attended a wind mail is odd,
Peter will.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Come across Slater drips in two with a double here
in this seven and the Socks take a six to
one lead.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
Be honest TV.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Who oh sure Ben and tends he's in the middle
of everything. Oh oh sorry, well what was What was
funny is there's a bit of excitement and he actually
had to call a play because the overwhelming criticism after
they got throttled by the Tigers yesterday was he was
just silent, so in saltea and soft. So it was
(37:03):
the eight second sign off. Yeah, let's send it to
Chuck and Ozzie to break it down. It's like, wow,
that's the quickest anybody's ever gotten out of a booth
in the history of man.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
But yeah, eight one win, White Sock gradulate. I mean,
this is the biggest highlight of the year for you.
Like if no, it's if they were doing NFL yearbook
for the White Sox, it would start with this game
best team in baseball, Detroit Tiger's best record, and.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Show you beating them. Hey, all right, Unfortunately.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
All year was not this way for the White Sox,
but they are taking flight. That would be your NFL films.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
Come on, Michael Taylor, who they gave a contract after
he hit him buck ninety three for Pittsburgh last year
with a big day to day. Yeah, I'll believe it
at that.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Now, speaking of the NFL, you didn't think the Seahawks
would have some kind of quarterback controversy, but apparently they
do so. Head coach Mike McDonald was on Seattle Sports
seven to ten am earlier today and was asked if
anything other than an injury between now and the start
of the season could lead the Seahawks to go with
another quarterback instead of Sam Darnald, who they just gave
(38:07):
three years and one hundred and ten million dollars too.
H McDonald said, no, you guys are crazy. It's just
not gonna happen. I respect. You got to ask the question.
Sam is our starting quarterback. We love him.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
He's doing a tremendous job. Ah. Yes, and no, he's.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Not looked great so far, up and down in OTAs
making some good plays. Other times he is struggling. But
of course he's gonna be the starting quarterback, right they
gave the guy three years and one hundred and ten
million dollars.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
Of course he's gonna start. You know.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
The big thing to understand out of this and this
is what you know. This is what comes up with
the the the perils of signing a guy who puts
one big year together in his fourth system and plays well.
Sam Darnald is not a good quarterback. Sam Darnald is
a good quarterback in the right system. And you can
(38:56):
sit here and say, well, we projected he'll do Okay,
He's not throwing up to Justin Jefferson anymore. Yes, Jackson Smith,
the JIGBA is really good. Yeah, I mean, the Seahawks
have talent, but this is not the up and down
the field offense where he fit last year with Minnesota
and to think that, yeah, he could do it. Remember,
he's not a good quarterback. He's good in the right system,
(39:17):
and so far there's been one system of all the
teams he's been on that he's been good for. So yeah,
this is why I'm a little suspicious and a little
apprehensive to say, all of a sudden, Sam Darnald's great.
You know the OTA stories. I remember these Ota stories
from the Jets. Boy Sam Darnald made a couple of
good throws here with boy OTAs he struggled. Remember, he's
only good in the right He's not a quarterback that's
(39:37):
good anywhere. He's not a good quarterback that if you
take him out of a team and bring him somewhere else,
he signs for a lot of money. Hey, he's a
good quarterback. He is good in the right system, and
the jury is out if this is the right system
for him in Seattle. Well, I mean, remember they go
back to twenty twelve where we had Matt Flynn signed
into a big deal and then all of a sudden,
(39:59):
Russell Wilson was the So.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I mean it can happen. History can repeat itself.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
And Sam Darnold, I really thought this was going to
be a dating thing, because it didn't when there was
something that started circulating about celebrities and whatever, and then
a bunch of articles about the woman he is currently
in a relationship with.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
So you always have that circling in the background for
all all of that.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
But for for Seattle, Yeah, this is not the controversy
you want.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
I get it. It gives us some headlines for for
you and I to talk about them. In Seattle. It's like,
we spent this money on a quarterback to come in
and you've got a pretty good system, right, you got
a pretty good roster division that's going to be held
to get through, there's no question about that. Oh and
you traded away a big piece of what your offense was,
(40:48):
you know, not that that's a you know, something to
really lament at this stage.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
I mean, really, he's one for five and that's what
it is. It's a That's why it's a huge gamble
for sam Guard. Look, I get why they did what
they did. They wanted to move on Ginosmith only got
him so far. But man, you gotta remember that's what
reminds you. This is a huge risk. It's an absolutely
huge risk going on in Seattle and all of a sudden,
Now you got people saying, hey, could he not be
(41:16):
the quarterback beginning of the season. That's insane.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
Well, but it's good to have these things to fester
and give us stuff to talk about. Where does he
rank in fantasy purposes?
Speaker 1 (41:27):
Up next, we get back to the biggest story of
the day, the two names I would like to see take.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
Over for tims in New York.
Speaker 1 (41:35):
Wait, are you ahead of me? Oh, you're ahead of me.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Frosburg, you're ahead of me. Back back back back, Brack
God Jan.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Soto a two run homer off for Kershaw. That's his
first yet. I think that that's his first hit as a.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Met Actually I don't think.
Speaker 1 (41:54):
Wow, he should go get the ball from the guy
in the stands probably Zach Hampell has it.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
See he just stole the back page from TIBs though, Yeah,
because it's like, hey, he can't yet, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
Yeah, no, it will be, It will be, it will be, uh,
you know, it will say Tom to go or you know,
something like that. And then and then in the top
Sodo catching fire like in a real tiny font.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
That's I don't think in New York they know what
Kershaw Day is, don't course, I don't think they. I
don't think they celebrate New York. They do, but I
don't think they celebrate it like that, you know they
they you know, would just be hey.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
So universally celebrated.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Everybody, everybody, we're all celebrating Kershaw Day. We're celebrating celebrating.
Speaker 1 (42:37):
Uh So, Look, the Knicks fired tips today, right, And
and you know we talked about it that, we talked
about it over a week ago. I'm not surprised because
the loss was so bad. The game one loss of
the Pacers was so all time NBA bad. Sometimes you
can't come back from it, right, and you need to
(42:57):
be able to have a clean slate for next year.
It's a really big and and I you know, we
usually talk about it with players when they make mistakes
or a team loses, but that's the number one thing
they The Knicks need a break, a clean break after
this devastating loss of the Pacers. Need a clean, clean slate.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (43:14):
So now when you talk about who's next, right, you know, Look,
the most fun part of today was seeing was just
watching Twitter and seeing the names change every few minutes
and all the all the all the basketball names. I go, oh,
here's a few thousand people that think this guy should
be the head coach of the Knicks. You know here, Oh,
here's Rick Patino's name coming up to the Sure Rick Patino,
why not? Metaworld Peace says, I want all the smoke, right,
(43:37):
I want to be the Knicks head coach, and he
goes on to talk about games he won, including winning
one I think it was some high school championship or
something that he won where he said, and we won
this where there was no security.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
No security. We made sure to point out there was
no security, like that's necessary to get get over Yeah. No,
but I don't, I don't, I don't know. I don't
know what that means. I don't.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
I don't know. You know, winning with you know, winn
winning when there was no security, Like, hey, there was
a really bad game. The two teams didn't like each other.
They were gonna be fights after. We had no security.
We didn't know if we were gonna get out of
there alive because we won this game. Like, I guess
that's what it means, no secre I guess that's what
that means, right, I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
Yeah, it is a a curious uh, space that we're
operating in. Uh, we can probably find him and get
him to come on and make his gaze. It's not
like a political palace, oh man, Yeah, I mean it's
it's not like a political office where we have to
then get the other ninety seven candidate's equal time. I
(44:42):
think he could just do one.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
We can get doc Rivers a lot of time, like no,
stop stop.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
Doc Rivers is not he's not even on the list. Man,
he's not even on the list.
Speaker 3 (44:49):
You don't have the list.
Speaker 1 (44:50):
Then you are tampering with doc Rivers right now. Maybe
you get doc Rivers that a JJ Reddick. Maybe I
could do that. Hey, JJ, how about that my pal
JJ Reddick who loves me. How about I do that?
Get you're replaced by Doc Rivers with the Lakers, how
about that?
Speaker 2 (45:02):
You can go coach the Bucks? Be fun. See now,
now you're just trying to bring your anger on Justin.
He didn't do anything. Yeah, he trying to. He's just
talking about it. That's available.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
You're trying to put doc doc Rivers has a job.
Shockingly so Doc Rivers still has a job. You're trying
to give him to us.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
Now, I don't do that.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
I don't want any of that, Doc Rivers, smoke, I
don't want any of that. You cannot of want that.
I don't want him near my play I would if
I was doing a fantasy league and I to take
head coat we were drafting head coaches, I wouldn't want
him because I wouldn't want him near my players on
my fantasy team. But that doesn't matter. Don't want to
I don't want to see his name next to the
guys they're gonna play in my fantasy team. I would
have nothing to do with Doc Rivers. Get that out
(45:43):
of here.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Man, Come all right, you want to have a little
bit of fun with the current odds as uh put
up by DraftKings.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
Yeah, because I'll tell you the two guys that are
that are really interesting to me that I would love
to see one of these two guys get the get gut.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
Leader in the clubhouse currently Mike Malone. He's not like
he has a coaching spot. Again, look Danny Hurley and
and Michael Malone. Of course they're gonna be nominated because
well but he's but further down the list. He's got
(46:17):
worse odds than Rick Brunson.
Speaker 1 (46:19):
Yeah, well yeah, well Rick Brunts is not getting the
Jan Budenholzer Budenhols is not getting the job, and Jay
Wright the look. Jay Wright would be the first call
and the Knicks would be making coaching mal practice if
they didn't call Jay Wright. Obviously, the Villanova connection. He's
a guy who's sharp. He gets the big market. Jay right,
(46:39):
Jay Wright watching him coach, he is a He is
a coaching gangster, right, Like that's what he like. I
think a Jay Glazer. That guy's such a gangster, Like
like meeting a guy he's so tough and he's so
cool and he demands respect.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
Like that's what I think.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
Jay Wright is a gangster, right, So that's the guy
I would want to Obviously, you have to make a
call for him. Now, Look, Hurley would be fun, be
fun to see him standing there looking staring up at
Karl Anthony Townsend yelling at him for not playing defense,
like just screaming at him in his face. But like
Danny Hurley and Mike Maloney, they're like the two, they're
(47:12):
like two of the same kind of versions of Tibbs, right,
because TIBs is a guy, he was grouchy, he was
you know, he would preach defense and he would be
kind of a hard ass. And it's kind of tough
to have a hard ass followed by a hard ass, right,
It's it's really difficult to do. Usually when you make changes,
you make a change because okay, we're going from the
hard ass coach the players coach. Then when Matt doesn't work,
(47:32):
you go from the players coach back to the hard
ass coach. So I feel like Malone is kind of
some of the same thing. And basically, look, I mean
the guy talked about near the end of the time
before he got fired that he didn't like his players.
Speaker 2 (47:44):
No, that's the thing, right, Many.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
Of the clips come back to you really want this No,
that's not gonna play man, He's gonna call out guys
not wanting to watch film and not play defense, not
rot Yeah, that's what you want to do with this squad?
Speaker 2 (47:57):
Yeah, og, you're fine, You're good. You guys over here,
I mean, I don't even know what you How ugly
does that get? I mean it'd be great for New York.
You are talking about in a media fire scorod as
we went.
Speaker 1 (48:10):
Thirty five games, what happened to this team?
Speaker 2 (48:13):
No?
Speaker 1 (48:13):
But like it's it's kind of the same thing. And
for look, when you had to fire a coach three
games before the end of the regular season, suddenly you
turn on to give that guy a job. It's like
when the Jets said, oh man, Adam Gase got fired.
Oh good for him. He was terrible with the dog.
Oh we just hired him. Oh okay, great, Like he
didn't get at any time to learn what he did
wrong stuff to do for the next job. That basically,
(48:35):
oh hey, yeah, Adam Gase was so bad he got
fired by an Indivision coach.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
We're hiring as our next head coach.
Speaker 1 (48:41):
And the guy still and I told you when he
got fired, he's not working in the NFL again.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
Where's Adam Gase?
Speaker 1 (48:45):
Right?
Speaker 2 (48:45):
Told you what's it gonna happen?
Speaker 1 (48:46):
Because it was so bad?
Speaker 2 (48:49):
But like Taco Tuesday, it is Taco Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (48:52):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (48:52):
But yeah, Malone and and and Hurley would kind of
be like another version of Tims. Right, you need something
a little bit different, And I'll give you two guys
that I'd be excited about. And they're they're they're not
some of the names off the top, but their names well, well,
Steven A. Smith got the gig. That'd be awesome because
he's on that list at sixty to one. That would
be really really good. Uh, there's not gonna be practice,
(49:14):
just gonna be debates. They're just gonna show up and
with no practice, just gonna debate. We're just gonna debate
and that's it. And and and Molly Carol will be
there with him, and she'll sit next to him, and
there he will be debating with Rick Brunston, with h
Jalen Brunston to practice and he leaves, and an added
nobody comes.
Speaker 2 (49:27):
It will be a big debate. You get to argue
your way into the starting line of.
Speaker 1 (49:33):
Oh see, there you go. There you go, win the debate,
get in the starting lineup. There you go, man, there
you go.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
Embrace debate on a whole other level.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
That'd be the new They would be wearing T shirts
on the bench with the embraced debates like it's it's
kind of like you know, Nick Strong or you know,
playoffs and embrace totag Embrace debate with a picture of
Steven Asmith's head he came to practice with then inarguable,
(50:03):
uh and in you know, an argument that we could
not possibly break in any way, shape or form. So
he earned his minutes tonight.
Speaker 3 (50:12):
I've got on good authority. That sucks.
Speaker 1 (50:20):
So the two guys i'd be excited about. And again
there they're not two guys that that you would you
would think off the top of your well, this is
who Jason likes. First guy. Honestly, No, no, no, no.
If you said to me pick a name out of
a hat or Doc Rivers, I would say give me
the hat and I'll put my whatever I come out with.
That's a coach. No, I don't want I don't want
(50:41):
Doc Rivers near my team. I don't want to even
keep saying his name on the air because thinking that
maybe Dolan's gonna listen and hear it and say, okay,
we already know jj Reddick.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
Listen, Dolan knows who Doc Rivers is.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
Oh, oh that is true. That is true. He doesn't.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
Yeah, you might know Glen Rivers.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
He might know.
Speaker 1 (50:56):
He might he might he might know uh Rivers, Cuomo,
you know, maybe he might know Uh yeah, I mean
I don't.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
I'm trying to.
Speaker 1 (51:02):
You might know Joan Rivers or three Rivers or Melissa
Rivers or Riverfront Stadium or Philip Rivers, Philip Rivers or
River Phoenix or are all his kids that are now
gonna start dominating the collegiate. We're ready for the Chargers quarterback.
He's a gunner. Rivers is that kid from the Cam
Newton commercial just loosen up my arm. He does a
(51:23):
commercial with Herbert just loosening up my arm, getting ready.
But the first guy, honestly I like, is Mike Brown.
All right, Mike Brown is someone who is defensive minded.
He has accomplished. He's been to an NBA final. He
redid the the Sacramento Kings, you know, two years ago.
(51:44):
Mike Brown is a really good coach, right and like coaches,
they have their ups in their downs, right there, Hey,
a good coach for a few years, but but it
falls on hard times you wind up getting let go.
But he is accomplished. He is defensive, and the Knicks
need to be more defensive. Mind like, right, what do
you need coming in? You need some buddy that's gonna say, hey, okay,
it was Tibs' thing, but now clearly not. How do
you do this? And the guy's gotten farther in his
(52:06):
career than Tibbs has. He's done more, He's done more
under h you know, he's coached in La under a
you know, having a having a big responsibility there too.
So he's done enough in his career, and especially because
I like the fact that defensively they'll be really, really good,
because everywhere he goes, his teams are good defensively. Mike
Brown's the first guy I really like.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
No, I dig what you're trying to say there, but
you just did the defensive guy. And clearly, unless you
really redo this roster, you've got two very glaring problems
with trying to run that. So I'm going the opposite way.
I'm going Taylor Jenkins and let's and let's just go
feed into the offense.
Speaker 1 (52:42):
Yeah, that's tough, man. Ah, that's tough because the guy
couldn't handle it in a smaller market and now he's
gonna come in.
Speaker 2 (52:48):
He also had to deal with a lot of the
uh off court stuff in the Jrummeran's that was a
little different.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
Yeah, And that's a little too dicey with me and
what he couldn't handle, and that all of a sudden
he's going to go to New York and the pressure
cooker and figure things out there, Right, I'm dicey with that.
Speaker 2 (53:10):
Yeah, he and shallameo get along. Fine, Look we're running
it up.
Speaker 1 (53:13):
But the other guy I'm really intrigued by, right because
and look because I don't really want to reach out. Look,
Monty Williams is a great head coach, right, but he's
up and down and is Monty Williams the right guy here?
It's tough, right, But the good news is there's a
lot of guys out there that have done some things
that you're going to get to interview. Right, there's a
lot of guys out there's a lot of former head coaches. Yeah,
(53:36):
I don't want, but these are guys that have all
won we see coach. No, no, no, neither of those guys. No, no, no, no,
no no, because then he could bring Lebron there. No no, no,
no no. You still stop putting guys out there that
I don't want.
Speaker 2 (53:53):
What do you think.
Speaker 3 (53:56):
I didn't hear you?
Speaker 2 (53:57):
You know Steve Nash at twenty two to one again
hot podcast guy and he can go in New York
who he wants playing the guard? Jase? I love it.
Speaker 1 (54:11):
Stop stop stop, just stop stop with the guys that
stop with the guy's not there.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Well, you know you gotta dig deeper down the list.
Speaker 1 (54:22):
Stop not happening. Uh, the other the other guy honestly
because you you've you've heard his name so much, Like
you've heard his name so much that I'm so intrigued
by him potentially being the next head coach of the Knicks,
Like if if they hire if they can't get Jay Wright.
Speaker 2 (54:41):
Okay, I get it.
Speaker 1 (54:42):
Right, So no Jay Wright, Mike Brown and another guy
that we're gonna talk about coming up next right here,
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio. Hey, let me tell
you about something that has been phenomenal for Mike and I.

wall to make a catch. It's the one Sodo game.
He just needed this game to warm up. Dodgers leading
(57:01):
the Nets four to three. Bottom of the fourth inning,
Juan Soto into the stands and right field and uh no,
Dodger fan jumped in front to try to grab the.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
Ball from him. See that doesn't happen. Do you think
there someone grabbed a bunch of the articles that had
been written about Karl Anthony Towns and just did a
find and replace with Soto's name and sent it to him.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
Hey guess what, man, guess what You're off those all
of a sudden, there's effort all over man. Oh yeah,
uh now, look like I said a few minutes ago,
look who could replace you know, TIBs in New York Now,
and I talked about Mike Brown being somebody. Obviously Jay
Wright is the first call. But the two guys after that,
Michael Malone doesn't really excite me because TIBs and and
(57:45):
Danny Hurley, is he really gonna yell? Was yelling at
Jalen Brunston. I mean, it's it's it's too similar. But
the guy that I, honestly I really would like to
see because he's been everybody's up and coming guy for
a long time. He's won titles as an assistant. I
kind of like to see Sam Cassell. I kind of
like to see what he could do for the longest time.
It's been boy, he's been close to a lot of
(58:05):
jobs and hasn't gotten one. And maybe he's one of
those guys that, hey, after coaching for so long, took
him a while, ready to run his own thing. And
and he's got a lot of cachet and players all
remember him in his career. He instead of a retread
that kind of comes in the let's see what you
can do here, I kind of would like to see
Sam Cassell.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
I really though.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Those would be if it's not Jay Wright, those would
be the two guys that I would say, Okay, if
it's either of them, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 2 (58:32):
If I'm the knicks lean in point guard, so can
get the best out of Jalen Brunson. Really it all
comes just back down and I know where it's the
coaching job that's open. But that's not the biggest issue
they had, right as much as that Game one debacle
and those final ninety fifty seconds are things that are
(58:54):
gonna live in the nightmares of New York. Might be
a new horror franchise that comes out of it. To
the theater and watch it. I don't know, you'll figure
it out. We can, we can storyboard it. The but
the ideas that you you have a flawed roster, right,
and that doesn't mean that Tibbs used what he had properly,
but I'd like to think he was smart enough that
(59:16):
if he had a ninth guy that could actually play
in substantive minutes, that he might have actually gotten off
the bench. Uh So looking at you, uh, Leon Rose.
But for for Sam Gassell, I'm curious to see if
they do go down a deeper rabbit hole. Right between assistants,
we talk about what you have on the bench in
Cleveland and some of the favorites maybe to come off
(59:39):
of there. But you know, when we look at the
different on offshore odds and some of the the online marketplaces,
it is a lot of familiar names. Hell, Jeff van
Gundy is the third favorite.
Speaker 1 (59:53):
Yeah, I know what I mean, though, I just kind
of saying, where where we're at with this list and
early betting odds and some of it. It doesn't require
a lot of money to put odds to a higher spot,
right and to get folks excitable.
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
But it's just curious to see all these old retread second, third,
fourth bites at the Apple, uh making their their bones
here in these early hours after TIB's departure.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
Yeah, I mean, of course you're gonna get the names,
and it's gonna and it's gonna be something that goes
through the entire playoffs, the rest of the playoffs and
the off season, like, okay, we got something great now.
So when the when the NBA Finals is non competitive.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
It's like, man, who are the Nicks gonna get? Who?
Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
Suddenly the Nick? The Knick's job is so sought after,
it's such people are gonna come out of the woodwork
for it. I bet you look. I even saw Jackson's
name trending earlier today, and we'll get fill back again. Yeah,
that's great, Like everybody's gonna want this job now because
it is so high profile. You have a lot of
talent on this roster. Uh yeah, and you have money,
(01:00:57):
all right, So it's it's depending on what you do
with you know, in the off season. But this is
something now suddenly it's wait, this is the most this
is the most sought after job in the NBA, and
now you got if the right coach gets there, you
like you, We're gonna see stories of hey, they're talking
to this coach, which means maybe Giannis is the guy
that wants to go. I mean, you're gonna see stories
(01:01:17):
like that. They're gonna carry us through the rest of
the off season. So congratulations Nick. Christmas comes early to
every NBA fan. We could talk about who the next
coach in the Knicks is Donald but not do stop
stop with Doc. Doctor Octopus has a better chance to
get in the job than Doc Rivers, and he's got like.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
Eight Doc Rivers is the favorite.
Speaker 2 (01:01:37):
Well, and he can go take over Broadway again. Alfred
Molina has had a fantastic run there.
Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
But it's the the idea of what this Knicks team became.
Right we we've had the conversation other than Clyde Frazier,
then you have Ewing and you have obviously, Carmelo Anthony,
You've got a lot of empty years in that fifty
two year drought since title. So this became a well
(01:02:01):
Jayalen Brunson for our memory is if not the top,
Nick and folk can bristle about it, but it doesn't
make it any less true because they recaptivated the imagination
of people in New York, and the Knicks became a
national story beyond Nick's.
Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
Homerdom like Jason Smith or other guys that are centered
in New York. Right, it became a team that I
think folks enjoyed watching and certainly the fans gravitated to
in New York.
Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
Unlike anything we'd seen. Hope is a dangerous thing, no
question about it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
And we've seen glimpses in the past of spilling out
into the streets after you know, first round wins and
what have you. But this is the first time that
there was any real hope that hey, this team is
actually pretty good. And to suddenly have that momentum break
like a New York City Cabby getting hit. I'm walking here,
(01:02:57):
I'm walking here with Tims getting fired, Like okay, now,
what's the breakneck change of direction in terms of the
coach and the roster going forward, because you've got an
Eastern Conference has a lot of change, whether Giannis becomes
a Nick or not not, you've got a balance of
(01:03:17):
power shifting right. You've got Indiana that everybody's immediately saying, hey,
they're gonna be around a long time. Maybe maybe not.
I mean things going in weird directions in the NBA,
as we've seen seven straight years that we're gonna have
a different champion. Outside of the the MVP voting and
Jokic with his dominance, you're seeing guys and new names
(01:03:39):
rise to the forefront like SGA and others.
Speaker 1 (01:03:41):
So there is no status quota. The Celtics they lost
Jason Tatum, he ain't coming back. The Bucks if Yannis leaves,
well there's no Damian Lillard to pick up the slack
and they're old.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
Look how old you become. All of that In the East,
there's so much room. So I think for Knicks fans
it was, hey, this is a team that that is
set for a run, and all of a sudden it's like,
well maybe not. Look at all the things that got
exposed in that series. Oh and we had to get
the coach shuffled out as well. By the way, there's
a great picture of Tom Thibodeau circulating from when he
(01:04:14):
once had great, glorious hair and it was a mullet.
Speaker 1 (01:04:19):
Yeah, yeah, that's hey, Tims, wouldn't you like to go
back and be able to tell this guy, Hey, in
twenty years dude, Uh, you want to make sure Bruns
is in the game at the end against the Pistons,
and you want to make sure you don't blow that
game winning its paces?
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
Wait? What what?
Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
Who are you?
Speaker 2 (01:04:32):
I'm from the future, Tim, You know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:04:35):
I got that picture with the mullet was taken right
before this season, it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
Was It was actually taken today after he got fired.
I'm growing it out now.
Speaker 3 (01:04:43):
That's what the did to him.
Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
Now, Frostburg, you have another candidate. Don't say Doc Rivers.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
Oh I won't.
Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
Okay, don't say Doc Rivers again.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
No, I've already said it. People know the mission. Get
it out there, get it trending. Okay, are you sitting down?
Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
I'm of course I'm sitting down.
Speaker 3 (01:05:00):
Well, I don't know. You stand up. Maybe twice a day.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
I'm sitting down, yeah, yeah, twice an hour. Whether I
need to or not. I'll stand up twice a day.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
I think the best fit out there is Reggie Miller.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
Oh would be the greatest coach ever for Miller just.
Speaker 3 (01:05:20):
And would have nightly.
Speaker 1 (01:05:21):
Oh Yeah, I don't know, dude. I think Spike might say, Okay,
I'm turning in my season tickets. I'm not gonna come
and watch Reggie.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Not gonna. Nobody told me the coach. No way.
Speaker 1 (01:05:34):
Every every practice would be we're gonna look at video
of my great eight points.
Speaker 2 (01:05:38):
And nine seconds against the Knicks. We're gonna look at it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:41):
Do we need to see it again?
Speaker 2 (01:05:42):
Are we gonna practice? No?
Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
I need to practice. You guys are good. Let's watch
a video again. Right here, I steal the ball. I
drove back behind the three point line. Hit Would I
steal the ball again? Come back by the three point line.
That's what every practice would be.
Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
We don't need that. I don't need it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
Games or not. They want to beat the Pacers.
Speaker 1 (01:05:58):
Of course I do. Reggie's not the guys. At least
it would get him away from broadcasting big games. The
Knick sern so I would would have to do. I
would only have to listen to stan Van Gundy at
that point, which is a big at least you get
him off there. Uh du it just in big games,
unlike the Lakers who were not in big games. But
you want me to You don't want me to hit
you between the eyes with something. Because you talked about
(01:06:18):
the roster going forward, I will tell you this new
head coach can look Leon Rose still running things. Obviously
new head coach coming in. The Knicks know they need
something different. The only guy on that roster who is
safe is Jalen Brunson. Not that everybody's gonna get traded,
but there is nobody on that roster that is safe
(01:06:41):
besides Jalen Brunson. Everybody else can move for parts that
are either going to be a more athletic, playmaking forward,
a better version of a guard that could take some
of the scoring pressure off of Jalen Brunson, a big
that can be athletic down low and and play good defense.
Nobody is safe outside of Jalen Brunson. Again, doesn't mean
(01:07:04):
everybody's getting traded, they're not. But the Knicks starting five
you had to cut in the throwing Mitchell Robinson as well. Look,
they're all talented guys. You got some, you got some
real lot talent there. Jalen Brunson is the only guy
that I can tell you for certain will be on
the next roster next season, because.
Speaker 2 (01:07:18):
Anybody else can go.
Speaker 1 (01:07:20):
It's a it's a new head coach who's going to
have his own way to do things to want to
bring the Knicks back defensively. Likely it's gonna be Karl
Anthony Towns. I told you last night, I have no
doubt that he's gonna wind up going because he was
an odd fit. He will bring the most back in trade,
and you could be better defensively, uh with him not
out there. So but nobody else is safe. It could
(01:07:40):
be Cat going with Josh Hart, could be Cat with that,
Unobi could be Cat with Bridges. Nobody is safe besides
Jalen Brunson. Only guy I can say yes he'll be
out there next year playing for the Knicks. I'm really
surprised that you haven't done at least a five to
seven minute monologue of how Bridges should be traded. Well,
because he did the big games against the Celtics, right.
(01:08:01):
You stole the ball twice at the end, winning first
two games, and he did Celtics.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
That's like winning doesn't that get you a lifetime contract?
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Well, when you trade five first round picks, I think
that almost is a lifetime contract.
Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
Well, but that's the thing, right, aren'chie kind of beholden?
Speaker 1 (01:08:17):
It's like, we can't, we can't just give up on
this guy. They'll eat us alive. Well they are anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
So you already have the Vegas misdirection of a letter
telling everybody that you fired Tibbs. That was a nice statement.
Did they get a non official letterhead? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:08:33):
Yeah, here it is right here. Don't look at that
always blue an orange too.
Speaker 2 (01:08:36):
It looks fantastic. Thank you, TIBs. Don't mind this sword
we're gonna put right for your back. You had a
good run. Congratulations on getting us somewhere. We haven't been
this century.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
He his hair for a sec.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
Who has more hair on their head? Tibbs or Charlie Brown?
Speaker 1 (01:08:54):
Oh tips, he combs it over, man, Come on, you've
seen the calm over for TIBs. One squiggle going up
in the.
Speaker 3 (01:08:59):
Air, barely holding on to a comeover.
Speaker 1 (01:09:02):
I mean, maybe, and watch, you'll watch. Maybe you'll see
Tim's now outside of the pressures of New York. He'll
grow his hair back. He'll be like, wow, look at
that New York man. Look at this he's walking around.
He looks like Chevy Chase from Flets when he's playing
for the Lakers and he's.
Speaker 2 (01:09:19):
Got the all the big hair. Yeah, go come on, man, Yeah,
that's it.
Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
I get rid of the stress and my hair grew back.
He would be like a walking advertisement for some sort
of hair regrowth system.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Well, and then he could have billboards up and down
the freeway like Irlacker does all in Illinois.
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
Yeah, why not?
Speaker 2 (01:09:34):
Right, I'm Tom Timbodeau.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
There's people in Chicago saying bring him back because you'll
get ten years of coaches.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
At this point, what do you got? Steve Kerr? Billy
Donovan's like second or third I think right now in
terms of longest tenur dead coaches.
Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
What does that mean?
Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
Stop?
Speaker 2 (01:09:55):
Stop?
Speaker 1 (01:09:55):
You said you weren't going to mention him. You said, no,
I'm not gonna mention Doc Rivers. You gave me Reggie Miller.
Come on, man, you.
Speaker 3 (01:10:00):
Said, doctor, tell me that not a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
Dude.
Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
I you know, if the Knicks were terrible and they
had no hope, I would say, yeah, why not, because
that would at least we'd have fun stuff, but.
Speaker 3 (01:10:10):
No, we got dreams.
Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
Man. I'm not gonna say it. I'm not gonna say it. Man,
the Eastern Conference Finals is like years ago at this point.
I'm not. I'm not. That's a lifetime ago.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
I am not gonna say it. Every nick outside of
Jalen Brunson is available to improve this team.
Speaker 2 (01:10:37):
Everyone will be available.
