Good evening, everybody, Happy fourth of July. Aaron Torres, Arnie
Spanier in for the guys, Jason Smith and his best
friend Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio we
are live at the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Let me welcome.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
My co host did and his anniversary today won the
only Aaron Torres.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
How you doing tonight? Torres? Busy weekend of anniversaries for me, Uh,
look at you?
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Wow, tonight is let's do some quick mental math here.
It is my eighth anniversary of Fox Sports Radio. It's
my work versus years eight years July fourth, twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
And I bet the under eight days.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Can you believe that good thing that you have no
say with the boss at all? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:55):
I was supposed to go to Summer League for Lonzo
Ball's day be you and Scott Shapiro car Old. Yes,
Scott Shapiro called me in and said, would you like
to do a show with Mike Harmon? So I sat
in for Jason Smith. The hot topic that night was
Gordon Hayward going to the Celtics.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Baby, When did you get promoted and start working with me?
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Was that? It was like February of twenty eighteen. By
the way, by the way, what's that demotion?
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Yeah, that was more of a demotion. Also, tomorrow's my
wedding anniversary, but nobody cares about that.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Which is a bigger anniversary, your Fox Sports or your
wedding anniversary.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Eh, you know, it depends on the day.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
So Gordon, you've been married. How long you've been married?
Speaker 5 (02:39):
July fifth, twenty nineteen. And I've told that story many
times ex years. Yeah, six years. So that was the night.
Two things happened. Zion made his Summer League debut. That right,
there was an earthquake in the middle of the game,
nothing to do with Zion, hold your jokes. He did
leave the game with a knee injury, though that was
(03:00):
only a pretty good sign that he wasn't long for uh,
for the NBA. And then also right in the middle
of you know, the reception, it was, you know, it
was past the ceremony.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Everybody was out on the dance floor.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
Kawhi Leonards signed with Clippers and Paul George got traded
to the Clippers.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I think I was on the air for you that night.
It was a Friday night.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
I know you could have been in, but it was
you know, it was crazy because it's easy to forget
this in hindsight, but you know it was Kauhi is
either going to be a Laker or a Clipper, and
it just kept dragging.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
On and on and on and on and on.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
And so it kind of felt like that was the
day where something was going to happen. But also there
was no one in the world that thought Paul George
was available in a trade. Now, it's easy in hindsight
to be like, oh, okay, that was a big thing
in the bubble. It's like, yeah, they got Kawhi and
Paul George. So I'm sure I've told you. But there
(03:57):
are pictures from the wedding reception of myself and a
couple other guys just literally staring at a phone trying
to get all the details because it's like, Okay.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
Kawhi is a clipper? Where did this George thing come from?
So I want to tell you lots of tweets. I
usually wouldn't get to Twitter right away. They don't want
to know who was the best co host you ever
worked with? That's too easy, Aaron, who was the best
looking co host you ever work with? I'm sure he's
probably from Arizona, University of Arizona and lives in Vermont.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
You want to answer that one.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Aaron, You want to This sounds like a major HR
violation coming, So I will say, all of my coworkers
are are equally good looking.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
So we went ahead and we worked together. How many
years now, seven years ago is that when we first
started working together.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
So we started in I think it was February twenty
eighteen actually, and Disaga will appreciate this. Yeah, one of
the first shifts we ever did, Arizona with the Packed
won the Pac twelve championship.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
I think it's the last time Arizona won a game
while you were on air.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Probably it was ironically, Yeah, it was DeAndre Ayton, of all.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
People there, who was the leader of that team.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
So geez, I can't believe you don't have any old
tapes or anything of your like first show I used
to say, I just do away. I'm not kidding around
like a week ago shows from like like forty years ago.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
That's sound crazy.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
I mean it was like on a reel and stuff
and CHRISTI I don't need it anymore. I'm just tossing everything,
VHS taped, everything went out. I can't believe you didn't
keep any of your first shows.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
You know well, I mean you did ask Ian less
than ninety seconds before he went on air to find
tape of us doing our first show together.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
So that not today, but on Sunday when we threw
it together.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Right, Well, of course they didn't even look. I'm sure
they didn't bother to walk. I'm sure he did look
more than night I looked. I looked, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
Arnie called me last week, like I think it was
like Friday last week.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
He calls me.
Speaker 7 (05:54):
He's like, all right, we need we need to do this.
We need to find some some footage of Aerontaridas. And
I was like, all right, I'll look for all right,
i'll see I'll see what I do it eight years ago?
All right, first off, eight years ago. So I start looking.
I look on YouTube. I go back to his Twitter.
I scroll all the way eight years looking for a
tweet saying, oh maybe like maybe like a live time
you don't.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
I went to the podcast.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
Oh I spent I spent a good maybe like forty
five maybe to an hour looking for this thing, good
for you of my young young twenties, mid mid twenties
weekday life.
Speaker 8 (06:27):
You know.
Speaker 6 (06:27):
So I just want to say I tried.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
You try not. I want a whole hour tour, right,
I mean, my good Well, I'll tell you what I know.
Speaker 8 (06:34):
You.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
I bet you a listener could find it one of
fifteen minutes that somebody that's sitting in the amazement of
their mom's house they know, want to use a computer.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
I will say two things.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
One I did say this on air the other night,
is that if people can find Arnie on the Newlywed game,
yes and put it on YouTube, that has to be somewhere.
But if we don't have any anything in the archives,
that's kind of disappointing.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
I'll tell you why.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
One time I filled in with Andy Furman and he
booked Bill bell check for us.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Oh I remember that.
Speaker 6 (07:01):
I Edy lives that he tells everyone that, by the.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Way, yeah, it was.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
It was like the only national interview that Bill Belichick
did his entire time with the Patriots, Like he just
didn't do anything other than mandatory media availability, but shout out.
Andy Furman was tight with him, and it was like
the day after Christmas, I'm driving around and uh Lee
de Lapp was producing at the time, and he's.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Like, oh, yeah, Torris, we're gonna lead with this this.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Oh, we might have Bill Belichick in hour two And
I'm like, oh, okay, cool, we gotta get lebron a
hour three and uh, you know Brady an hour four
He's like, no, we're seriously might get Bill Belichick, And
sure enough we got Belichick.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
So I remember that.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I listened to that, so that was that was awesome.
I remember him able to pull that off.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
So it was a great interview.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
But uh, happy Anniverse three for your wedding and for
your time here at Fox Sports.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
I want to throw that out there. Yes, both are
equally important to me. Scott Shapiro, if you're listening.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
To believe me, you know we've I've been getting tweets
people wanted to take phone calls.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
The dude, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Look, there's a couple of reasons.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
One, I don't know if I can trust Mary to
pot up the phone calls. I don't know if I
could trust Shake to answer the phone'nutes in and I'm
just getting and I don't know if I could trust
you Aarons actually introduced the calls and do that right
properly either.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
So I mean that's kind of your job, but it's okay, no, yeah,
but I'm not in this driving.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
I thought you were driving driving. I'm driving, God forbid.
I mean you're still learning how to drive it.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Driving miss Daisy over here is what rimember that?
Speaker 3 (08:39):
So you drove horse and carriage?
Speaker 5 (08:40):
But yeah, you're old Arnie, Arnie, real quick, this is
an important day, July fourth?
Speaker 3 (08:49):
What was the first July fourth?
Speaker 8 (08:50):
Like?
Speaker 3 (08:53):
I hate you, man, I mean I hate you.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
I mean it's you know, I mean it must have
been special. It was good and we all get to
wear those great hats. You and Frank just sitting around.
Oh he was a great guy.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I mean he did have a ponytail at one time.
So I did fit right in. I absolutely fit right in.
Do you still have the white wig used? Of course?
Speaker 4 (09:16):
I mean, what did you think I was gonna throw
that out? Of course I have to have the white
wig still got I put it on from time to time. No,
we keep it clean, all right. Look, we got a
lot to get to it. It's fourth of July. Happy
fourth of July. Everybody will have a little fun, will
keep you busy, keep your company on this holiday. Of course,
it feels I don't know if it feels like a Sunday, Wednesday.
(09:38):
I don't even know what day it is, to be
honest with you, Aaron, it's kind of crazy. It certainly
doesn't feel like a Friday. But I will keep you
busy and we do have a lot of topics to
get to.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
It is a busy show. You want to be part
of the show.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Real simple, Twitter is the best way, Aaron underscore Torres,
I'm mistinking genius one.
Speaker 8 (09:55):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
We could try to take calls. A little nervous about that.
I used to be the king calls.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
I know, you say, Rob Parker and Kelvin Washington say
that the king of calls. Aaron, I have never personally
said that, but well someone said they What was it
Shaye that told me that?
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Did you say that? Did our producers say that?
Speaker 8 (10:12):
So?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Yeah, yeah, okay, Well I'm I used to take calls.
I used to take like over sixteen an hour. How
about that sounds made up sixteen?
Speaker 6 (10:22):
So you didn't say a word, they would.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Get like a quick thirty seconds in.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
I'd hang up and then I'd give a quick answer
and I would just churn them out.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
The boss just.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Wanted as many phone calls as possible, and I would just.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Boom boom, boom, boom boom boom, just spit him out.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
We didn't we didn't have as many commercials as we
do now, and certainly not two updates. But yeah, I'm
not kidding around. The Sega could vouch for me. I've
known the Saga for over one hundred years, so he was.
He was good friends with Ben Franklin.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
I'll tell you all about it, all right.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
If you want to get in, we could maybe try
to take calls eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox
eighty seven seven nine to six six streets six nine.
Did you watch the Nathan's Hot Doggie. I'm always into
it to see if anything goes crazy. It was great
to see Joey Chestnut back. I think he got the
seventy one hot Dogs was right there on seventy and
a half to seventy one. I think seventy one was
the final number. He looked great, blew away the field.
(11:17):
I think he won by about twenty four because if
you wanted to bet over twenty five Aaron, you could
have gotten like fifteen to one odds on that. But
he dominated the field. Felt like gold times having Joey
chest Nut back.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
In this thing, you know.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
I like how you say it was good to have
him back, like he was out with an ankle injury.
Not tyres Alipurt Okay, yeah, I'll be honest.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
So, and this is caught using PDS, I'll suspend something. No,
all right, kidding, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
This is the most anti July fourth thing ever. But
I've said this on air. I find the hot dog
eating contest repulsing. Oh and I can't watch it. It's
just when they start sticking the buns in the water
and then you got what bread dribbling down your face.
It's just it makes me nauseous. To be perfectly honest.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
And they don't chew the food what I mean, Yeah,
they don't. They just go ahead and swallow. It's a
lot of swallowing. You don't like to watch any of it.
You just too repulsed.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
By the whole thing. Yeah, what happens if you had
to cover the.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
Thing, you know, like like it was an NFL game,
We're going down to Coney Island to cover this thing.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
If Fox Sports Radio sent me to the hot dog
eating I would be a professional.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
You know.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
It's like, you know, listen, but uh but yeah, no,
it doesn't really do anything for me. Listen, I'll say this,
Joe Chestnut is insane, Like, you know, independent of how
much I watch or how much I enjoy or how
much I don't enjoy. Like, I know this sounds like
I'm kind of being sarcastic, but I'm actually not. Like
the amount of years that he has been able. He's
(12:48):
forty one years old. Okay, Like you said, close to
seventy one hot dogs, he fell just short of his
twenty twenty one record seventeen wins, Arnie, this guy's got
a longer prime than Tom Brady. Like, I'm sorry, no,
it's just like, I don't know. I don't have you
ever watched stuff on him, because he really does quote
(13:09):
unquote train like he does neck exercises, and he works out,
and he does all sorts of weird stuff, and like,
I give him credit, he's clearly the best that's ever
done it.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
And but you know, I wanted to give you a
little bit. I don't know if I sent this to
you earlier. The hot dog thing is just one of
tons of records. He has one hundred and eighty two
large chicken wings in thirty minutes, one hundred and twenty
one twinkies in six minutes. That that's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
I think I've got twenty one in six minutes. I
think I've come close to that.
Speaker 6 (13:43):
Yeah, I think honestly, I have.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
One hundred and sixty five parogis in a minute.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
That's a lot. Forty five pulled pork sandwiches in ten minutes,
fifty three soft beef tacos in ten minutes, and it
really goes on and on.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
I'll listen to this.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
One hundred and twenty six three inch tacos in eight minutes,
fifty two small cheeseburgers in ten minutes.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
This guy's an eating machine.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
I mean seriously, to be able to go in and
just funnel that and still not be sick.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
I think of your.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Interns, you know what I mean, think of your insides.
It's horrible. It's got to be destroyed. It's crazy, you know.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Yeah, That's what I'm thinking, is he doesn't have any
health problems. I mean, it's one thing if one day
a year and obviously you're training for Here's my question,
and I'm being kind of serious about this, like how
much does he have to eat to train?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Like?
Speaker 5 (14:40):
It's not like he just shows up on July first
and eats seventy hot dogs.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
I don't think he does that anymore.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
I actually heard somebody talking about this. I think like
a day or two before the event. It's not that
he eats. He drinks like special water shifted from somewhere
to make his stomach expanse, and he makes it bigger
something like that. There go, you eat Robin, right, you've
eaten Robin before, you know. Those cup of Robin noodles.
I have ten cups of Robin noodles in an under
(15:06):
two minutes. Wow, that's got.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
A lot of sodium. I mean, you're telling me that
I have too much salt in my diet. It's a
lot of sodium from a man.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
I'll give you one more eighty one waffles in eight minutes.
And those those are four waffles too. Those those things
they fill you up, you know what I mean. A
couple of those and you're pretty much done. Wow, that's
fifteen large bowls of gumbo.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
In eight minutes. He really he could.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
He seriously, and he's got about almost fifty records here.
So it's not just hot dogs that this guy will eat.
He'll put down a lot of things out there. So
congratulations to Joey chessed up at to Mickey Soto who
won the women's event. Yeah, she blew away the competition also,
so it wasn't really much of a event. By by
(15:54):
the way, Joey chested at the over under was seventy
and a half to seventy one, so it was right
there on the over under if you were betting on.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
It in Vegas. Can you imagine betting big money on
that in Vegas too? The overunder was what seventy and
a half? And how many did he eat? Seventy one? Wow?
Speaker 4 (16:15):
Yeah, some places had it seventy one also, so yeah,
it could have been a push depending on where you
got down. There was people talking about it on Twitter
all day long today pushing for Joey to get the over.
He had about fifty in the first five minutes or
like a little bit past the five minute mark. It
looks like he was gonna shatter seventy, but then he
(16:37):
slowed down and it got tough at the last twenty
were real tough on.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Him, all right.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
So if you want to come on, Aaron underscore Torres,
I'm in sticking genius one.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Are you like Aaron? And you can't stomach the Nathan's
Hotdog Contest? Are you like me? And not only did
you watch it?
Speaker 4 (16:54):
After that airon, I went upstairs and I had two
hot dogs myself with a little mustard, spicy money.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Twist Star group. What how many twinkies? I didn't have
any twinkies. Hot dogs and seventy eight twinkies.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Yeah, my wife wouldn't if she saw me eating a twinkie.
She'd rather catch me in bed with like two blods
than than twinkies.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
I promise you that. Oh my god, the twinkies? What
do you hate it? You want to kill yourself? Oh?
It would it would be pure hell. I want to
get to Lebron. He's the big news today.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
I really don't even know where to start about the
picture about him in the Cleveland facility, or the hat
that said welcome home, or him going to social media
saying everybody chill out. You know g D I come
here every summer to work out, or if he's going
to be back to the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
So let's start at the beginning.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
We know now with the new owners, Lebron's going to
be back or maybe be back for one more year.
Do you think he's going to be back with the Lakers.
Do you think the Lakers make a move and trade him?
There's still value out there. How many team you want
this guy? Is it just Cleveland that wants this guy?
Do you have to only trade him to Cleveland because
that's where you'd want to go. Does Lebron even want
(18:09):
to come back? What do you think, Aaron?
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Are we doing the Lebron segment now? Yeah, we'll get
rub get right into it.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Maybe we should break.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Oh look, you guys calling the shots today.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
Huh you know no, you're driving, you're driving, you're driving.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
I just that's fine.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
If you guys want to want to take a quick break,
come back and get into it, Aaron, we'll do that.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
I mean, I think the boss is kind of required.
I'm not really totally sure how it works, but I
mean he did say there were less breaks back in
the day when you were hosting with Ben Franklin.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
They did take sixty Yes.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah, it's in a sixty collar in an hour kind
of show. Tonight already spends.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
Torres wants to probably go eat some pizza or something,
so Twinkie bro, Yes, we'll come back.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
We'll get to Lebron. I do have a lot of questions.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
You want to jump in, Aaron underscore, Toris, I'm stinking
genius one. We're in for the guys tonight Jason Smith

Like twelve or thirteen years ago. Yeah, eighteen eighteen, Yeah,
okay me. Black socks. You black socks were a big
topic your first shutting. How could they throw the World Series?
What's wrong with that? What is happen?
Speaker 5 (20:27):
We've come full circle with all these guys. You know,

Yeah, life is a flat circle the earth. Life is
a flat Did you see the pitch he threw?
Speaker 6 (20:42):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Oh my god.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
You have to throw the pitch to make sure that
the batter doesn't offer at it, otherwise it's not going
to be considered a ball. We're talking about the investigation
going around with Luis Ortiz. We'll get to that later on.
We do have a bunch to get to though this hour.
If you want to jump in, Aaron underscore Torres, I'm its.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Stinking genius one.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
So Twitter is the best way to get a hold
of us. I do want to get to the MJ
situation where he's gonna be working for NBC, And if
you still think he's got clout where people are like, well,
I've got to tune in to the pregame show.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
I'm gonna hear what Michael Jordan's got to say kind
of you know, kind of like what Shack and.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
Kenny and those guys and Ernie have to say. Are
people gonna say, got to hear what mj has to say,
got to tune into the pregame. Does he still have cloud?
Is he gonna say anything of value to Aaron? Is
he gonna be controversial? Is he gonna let everything spill out?
I'm not so sure, but sure about that?
Speaker 3 (21:38):
What do you think?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (21:39):
I think that's gonna be. The interesting part of it
is what is the role gonna be? Obviously he's not
gonna be announcing game, So is he gonna do like
the big sit down before the game? What does it mean?
You know, like, is he gonna be in an analyst role?
Because I think that's obviously Like why we were so
intrigued by Tom Brady was you know, is he gonna
be And I think he was. I thought Tom Brady
(22:03):
was fine. I didn't think he was as bad as
everybody made it out to be. But that's gonna be the.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Thing with MJ.
Speaker 5 (22:07):
Is he gonna be critical? Is he even gonna be
in a role where he gives opinions? Is he just
gonna give uh? Is he just gonna do interviews? I
just think it's gonna be fascinating to see what actual
role he's put into.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Yeah, I'm curious about his demeanor also, and I will
get into that later on because there's a lot of
different avenues to take on that.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Plus also we're gonna have a guest coming up now.
Speaker 4 (22:27):
Felix Ojoe is the offensive tackle, the kid from high
school that just signed a three year guarantee to play
for Texas Tech at five point one million dollars in
nil money. That is a lot of de narrow for
a seventeen year old, right, my friend, that is that
breaks the.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
Bank right now on the nil deals, right though.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
Yeah, it's a crazy story. Basically number one high school
senior going into his senior year this year. So he
just finished his junior year.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Wow, by the way.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
His seventeenth birthday today, So he just committed on his
seventeenth birthday a birthday.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Yeah, and yeah.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
Nice little birthday for him, and so yeah, his agent,
Derek Shelby, is somebody that I've known for a while,
and I think we're gonna get Derek on here pretty
soon to kind of break down. Listen, I would have
to look into it a little bit, but I believe
let's see here accordingly, I was gonna.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
Say, say go ahead, guy, well, I was gonna say,
let's go to him.
Speaker 8 (23:30):
Then.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Let's a matter of fact, he's on the line from
Prestige Management. He is the agent for a Field Joe
joining us. Now it's Derek Shelby. Thanks for joining us.
Appreciate you coming on the show, and how you guys
doing good?
Speaker 7 (23:43):
Good?
Speaker 3 (23:44):
No, thanks for coming on.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
First things first, how long does it take to get
a deal like this done? A three year, five point
one million dollar deal? How long have you been working
on this?
Speaker 8 (23:55):
We've been working on this bill for probably about say,
thirty thirty days, maybe forty days total. Once he done
his visit, thanks ramped up pretty quickly. I thought it
would be a major contender as long as he liked
(24:17):
the school. Because he had. Of course, everybody was after
him from Texas to Ohio State, Florida, Michigan. I think
he ended up with probably seventy high major offers seventy
nine wow, scholarship offers.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
So, by the way, today is his seventeenth birthday, right.
Speaker 8 (24:32):
Yeah, just turned seventeen. Imagine being sixteen sixteen yesterday. He
turned seventeen. Today, you're six foot seven about two ninety
and you just signed the biggest guaranteed contract and college
football history.
Speaker 6 (24:49):
Incredible.
Speaker 8 (24:49):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
You know, I got to ask you, Derek, if you
said that he had over seventy schools after him, do
you take offers from all seventy schools?
Speaker 3 (24:58):
And was Texas Tech the high this offer?
Speaker 8 (25:01):
You know, good question, though you don't take offers from
seventy I told him when he got to like sixty
five or whatever it was, hey, man, you need to
cut this down, you know. So I honestly waited him
to cut it down to like five to seven schools,
and and honestly, when you cut it down to five
to seven schools, Texas Tech. But he's on that list, right,
(25:23):
you know, so there, I mean, Notre Dame. Everybody was
on the list, right, but Texas Tech was not on
that list. And I had seen, you know that he
went on a couple of other visits that were not
on that list. You know, he went to Colorado, he
went to another school, but hey, man, you need to
go to Love Can we see it? Because love ITCK
had been calling me, text has been calling me like, man,
(25:44):
we would love to have a shot at Ojo. You know,
And a lot of people realize, you know, I represent
Nigerie Kennedy, the All American softball the picture at Texas
Tech right R right, of course, you know, so I
had a relationship there and then maybe so they were
like calling me and say, can the kid come out
at least see what we have? And we've done that.
A lot of people don't realize. I mean, Techne's invested
(26:04):
about two hundred and fifty million in their football facility.
It's top three in America. It's unbelievable. And I think
once the kid gets there and sees what they had it,
they was really, you know, very impressed. Now keep it
not mine for sixty five to seventy scholarship offers. His
second officer he ever got was Texas Tech. They were
to offer number two. So they've been they had been
(26:25):
there early, you know, and they just stuck with it
and he just kept winning. You can get a shot
at the kid.
Speaker 4 (26:30):
What was it that did Texas Tech give you the
most money and did you have to say, hey, this
is what it is going to take to get it done.
Speaker 8 (26:37):
Well, you know what, the biggest offer ended up being
Texas Tech. And you know we didn't start at the
number we finished with. You know, but going into this thing,
my number one plan for four Feet Lift was to
find the best place where we can get to play early.
He wants to play early, and at his position, it's
(27:00):
hard to get that left tackle positions. I mean, that's
that's the crown jewel, right, you know. So he wanted
to play early but also be able to maximize the
most earning potential at the same time. So I knew
it'd be hard to get both, but that's what we
shot for. So when I met with Texas Tech and
met with their gms and their staff, you know, they've
(27:22):
mentioned what they could do it for one year. I
don't want. I want three, and I knew that would
be hard to get because no one does that in
college football because it's too risky, right, But I knew
with this family that I had, I wanted to get
this kid a secure future for him and his family.
So I want to do something that's unprecedented. So I
wanted a three year deal, give me your number for
(27:43):
three years, And that's kind of how it got started.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
So let me ask you that, Derek, because that that
was something that jumped out to me right away. One
as much as you can share in any sport, not
just football, I mean, how often are these agreements beyond
one year but then two? I would have to assume
there has to be some sort of language because you know,
God forbid, the coach gets fired, God forbid the coach
(28:10):
you know, has to take a medical retirement. I mean,
how does that work? Because obviously, you know, we know,
like Arnie and I ten minutes ago, we're talking about
Lebron having a player option going into this year. So
how does that deal work? Because I would have to
assume there has to be outs God forbid, something bad happens.
Speaker 8 (28:28):
Well, a good question for one very bark in between
to get any type of multi year deal said, no
one wants to do that in football. You know, they
want one year called it protects found and what the
football people will say, it also protects the kid. So
let's say you bringing a kid and you give them
(28:49):
you know, three hundred thousand dollars and he has a
fantastic year, he can ask for more of the following year,
you know. But also in the same token, you give
them three undred thousand dollars and he gets hurt that
he gets nothing the following year. Right, So there's risk.
There's risk on both sides in my opinion. And when
you signed with a school, you're not signing with the coach.
(29:11):
You're signing with the school. So the coach leaves, what
have you, It didn't really matter, you know. So of
course you want to play with the coach you signed for.
But the way we've done this deal was we're signing
for Texas Tech, and we love coach maguire anyway. He's
just a great guy and great staff and and all
these staffs were good. Texas people were fantastic, Ohio State
was fantastic. You know. It's just Tech is an aggressive
(29:36):
attail and they wanted to show the world that they
mean business.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
You know, I'm interested about this, and I'm not talking
about Texas Tech, and I don't want you to bring
up any school, but was anybody, for lack of better words,
extra creative with the money, anything crazy or something that
was offered to you or no, not really well, I
mean by point one, is reavy enough right, you know?
Speaker 8 (30:02):
I mean that was a substantial offer. Utah came at
the last minute with a very very good offer. You know,
so every school put their best foot forward and in
the last week leading up to be you know, I
knew what we already had, but I still would talk
to all the school things, is this your best offer?
(30:23):
This is your best offer? And even throughout the process,
I would ask the maybe can you do two years?
Can you do three years? Right? And you know a
lot of them did not want to do that, and
I understand that, right, you know, so remember lots of
good offers. The tech offer was was really really amazing,
and I really wanted to have this kid have an
opportunity to be the biggest in history. This kid has
(30:46):
bright shoulders and you can handle it.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Is this the future?
Speaker 8 (30:49):
Now?
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Is this going to be the future? Three year deals?
Speaker 8 (30:53):
You know what? This is the first one I think done,
you know, so definitely such President Now I don't know
if he canna bet a teacher or not. I mean
I think still for school they may see at a
little bit too risky because football is just so hard. Now.
You may see three year deals in other sports, right
maybe you know, basketball possibly and some other sports, but football,
(31:14):
I mean, you can get hurt on every play, right,
you know, so a lot of that can be seen
as a lot of risk, you know. But look at
my job to do as best for my client, you know.
So I felt like hill to get him the best
deal in history of the game.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
And explain to cause I find this part fascinating.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
You were talking about the benefit and drawback for both sides,
and you talked about the opportunity to play early.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Because I think about it, and it's kind of fascinating.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Right, is that if he goes to a place where
maybe he can't play early, then it not only hurts
his earning potential for his freshman year, but then also
his sophomore year because he didn't play. So it's basically
like you kind of had to find that sweet spot
of like you said, a spot where he can go
compete for the starting job right away if he's good
enough obviously earn it.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Yeah, I don't even know where I'm going with I
just think it's an intro dance.
Speaker 8 (32:02):
I know exactly where you're going and what you're saying,
makes sense. We keep in mind all these schools have
starting left.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Tackles already, sure, right, and in a lot.
Speaker 8 (32:10):
Of cases, you know, you know, let's say, for example,
of a school like Texas coming off of a national
championship runner up, you know season, you know, they have
a starting left tackle. You know, if that's starting left
tackle is making ten dollars, I can't go in there
and ask them to get Phelix twelve dollars, right, because
(32:31):
he's a starting tackle. He than All American, right, and
he's already been there two years, you know, So the
roster had to match up perfectly as well to where
it just so happened that I believe the left tackle
at techn be a senior this year, this would be
then he'll be drafted. He's the probably first SECD around
draftick anyway, So that spot's going to be open now.
So that's why we're going to go there and get
a chance to compete early for that for that for
that position. So that everything has to line up, and
(32:53):
it's just a perfect situation, a perfect storm. And you know,
and when you when you deal them with those Red
Raiders out there, it's all about pounds this is this
is their professional team. You know.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
I'm sorry, Derek, Right, where does all this money come from?
Where's all this money coming from?
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Well, this is part of the rep share, right. So
with the new House settlement, the rep share, each school
gets about twenty pointy five million that they can spend,
and they they spend that money percentage wise based on sports,
and football always is the most Every single rule for
n Cuba's gonna be based about football. Period. That's what
carries everybody, right, you know. So this is a rep
(33:31):
share deal now pree House settlement, the numbers are coming
from you know, the donors and the different sponsors and
all that. Now you can still you will still get that, right.
But but the new House settlement rule, anything over six
hundred dollars has to be reported and approved by Deloitte,
which I don't know how they're gonna do that with
thousands and thousands of kids playing sports. How they get
(33:54):
got the time to approve a six hundred dollars deal.
But this is a rep share deal, so this comes
out of that. So that just even speaks more highly
because this is basically thirteen to fifteen percent of that
whole rapture that they're getting on one kid, right, so
they have to make sure it's the right type of kid,
you know. And when we met with them and went
over these numbers, you know, they asked phenomenal questions. You know,
(34:16):
James Blanchard the GMS, he's unbelievable, He's good at what
he does, and he's like, I need to know the
kid that can he handle this? If we do this,
can he handle it? You know? Can you handle being
in that locker room? But just on your shoulders? You know.
So for them to make this this gesture, they had
to fill it with the right fit too.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
Let me ask you, though, Yeah, let me ask you this, Derek,
in your experiences and I know this whole nil stuff
is early, and I think this is what you're getting
to is like, you know, in the pros, it's just
you know, all salaries are public and it's just, hey,
Lebron's the best player, so he's going to make the
most money. But you know, you hear about locker room whatever,
(34:59):
what is it like, Like, what have your experience has
been like in a college locker room? Because obviously everyone's
gonna know what this kid's quote unquote salary is or
number is or whatever is it like the pros where
it's just hey, he's you know, he's the building block
that the whole team's built around, and you know he's
our top NFL draft you know prospects.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
So of course he's gonna make the most way. You
understand the point I'm trying to get to, I'll stop that.
Speaker 8 (35:24):
Yeah. Yeah, So in the college locker room like this, right,
the older guys who are also making some pretty good money,
they're going to test them early. You know, you got
a high school kid coming and making all this money,
who want to get tested early? You know, you know,
are you tough enough? Are you ready? Because they want
to They want him to be good. They want to
win the national champion. They need him to be good. Right.
But the good thing about Tech that he's not the
(35:46):
only millionaire in that locker room. There is multiple in
that locker room that already there, right, you know. So yeah,
even though he had the big ticket, right, you know,
there's other guys that that or they're making good money,
they're going to take them under their wings like any
supper classim Wood and make sure he's ready to prepare.
You know, so iron sharpers iron you know you know. So,
(36:09):
but when he gets in there, they're gonna try to
bust them up. It's like they do everybody else. Make
sure he's ready to come out and compete.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
You mentioned you got Kennedy your soft softball, right, Texas
Tech is a softball power.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
She got a million dollars that's got to be the
highest for softball. Is a mat or what?
Speaker 8 (36:25):
Yeah, what I have been able to do. You know,
when she first left Stamford and we got her to
Texas Tech, we we we we we've done that deal.
That's something I negotiated, and that's the biggest deal in
the sports history, you know. And now we've just done
it again for football, you know. So it's pretty pretty
awesome that. You know, me and my partner were Shot Phillips,
(36:46):
who owned Prestige Management. We own the company. We've we've
been able to negotiate the two biggest deals in those
two sports and the history of the game. So I
mean and and but keep in mind though we're not done.
I mean, we were Darius Acuff Junior, who would be
a top five lottery take out of Arkansas. Wow. You know,
we represent we represent the number one volleyball player in
(37:07):
the Country Brooklyn to lay out of Kentucky, who would
be the national unner Player of the Year of the
sophomore You know, we represent Nate Marshall, one of the
best adventures in football Frenshton and Michigan. We represent Dylan Bett,
a seven foot two, fourteen year old pena I'm out
of Colorado, who maybe the American whimby Wow.
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Right wow.
Speaker 8 (37:26):
You know, we represent Cooper Hackett, the number one off
at a tackle in the twenty seven class, right, you know,
and thought that being said, you know, you know, we
we're covering our races the best we can. We have softball, volleyball,
you know, football, basketball. You know, we kind of spread
it a little bit, and we want the right type
of kids and right type of families. We don't take.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Everybody, do you do weekend radio hosts. I'm just just.
Speaker 8 (37:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you guys are.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
I actually have one last question about Felix.
Speaker 5 (37:59):
Obviously, you know, record setting congrats to you and him,
but obviously, look, let's have it honest conversation here. Is
that I think the outside world thinks, hey, he's quote
unquote just taking money just because it's the best offer.
Do you believe that in his three years at Texas Tech,
they will field a team that's good enough to compete
at the top of college football outside of him.
Speaker 8 (38:22):
I'll tell you this right now, Texas Tech will make
the College Football Playoff this year.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Oh wow, and they.
Speaker 8 (38:30):
Will be a top four seed.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Wow. Good.
Speaker 8 (38:37):
Yes, Texas Tech has brought in some of the Their
portal class coming in is off the charts. Texas Tech
is building a dynasty right in front of our eyes,
and people are starting to pay attention to it. When
you got when you got guys like John Sellers and
Cody Campbell, you know, two guys that you know. The
(38:57):
founders of Texas have legal oil, guys who are multi billionaires,
who are in their forties, who played football. They're coming
to win, and unlike some schools, they're about to put
the money where their mouth is. They have to. They
have to spend and compete. It's hard to beat Texas
and Ohio State and Alabama and Georgia Notre Dame in Michigan.
(39:19):
It's hard. Those guys have been winning for forty fifty years,
you know. But Texas committed to doing that. I mean,
they have a big Twulf championship for softball this year,
the track team won the Big Twelve Championship, the national championship.
I think you know they're winning all of the place.
They're foot basketball team within the Leadiate eight this year, right,
you know, so they're they're they're doing this right.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
Before we go. Could they ever overtake the popularity of
a Texas.
Speaker 8 (39:45):
It's going to be always gonna be hard to beat
Texas because of Texas. But they're going to compete every
in every single sport but the best in the country.
And I'm telling right now Texas text will be in
the college football playoffs this year.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
I'll add this too, is you know everybody talks about
the money.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
I can't speak to Felix. I'm not gonna lie and
say I've watched him a ton.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
I enjoyed the hell out of watching Naja Kennedy this year,
and that was such a fun run.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
She was great.
Speaker 5 (40:17):
Yeah, and it's like, you know, everybody the story is
about nil and then you're just like, oh, she's awesome
and really fun to watch. And I think, you know,
I think Arnie, you and I will probably talk about
this after Derek gets off. But there's all this perception
of well, these guys get paid now. It's like the
sports are still awesome. I was at the Final four.
It was incredible. Watching Nija Kennedy lead that team to
(40:37):
the brink of a national championship was awesome. I don't
want to speak for you, Arnie, but I can't wait
to see Felix and see what he can do with
Texas Texas.
Speaker 8 (40:45):
I will tell you this. You know, a kid like Nijah,
for example, I swear to you that decision was not
based on money. Felix Ojo same thing. When the number
was starts offered this me or you, I'm saying hell yes.
When they confinished the.
Speaker 3 (41:04):
Sentence, I know Arnie would say yes, right, yes.
Speaker 8 (41:06):
You know it took Niga over a month to make
her decision, wow, because it wasn't about the money. Okay.
It took Felix over a month to get to this decision,
you know. And that's the credit to their parents. And
these kids have fantastic parents. So when we're all recruiting kids,
(41:26):
we look for that we want a certain type of
kid with a certain type of parent. Right, they have
the right expectations. These kids parents are fantastic. They're all Americans,
just like their kids are you know. So they were patient,
they research, you know, they both they make good livings,
and you know they wanted to do something special, but
they also want to make sure it was the right
(41:48):
fit for their child. And in both of these situations,
the child made the decision. Yep, you know, and that's
how it should be.
Speaker 4 (41:55):
All Right, we love it he of course, Derek Shelby
agents who field. So shall we certainly appreciate each coming on.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
You've been very candid. We'll have to do it again.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
Best of luck with your other clients, and we'll certainly
have you on again.
Speaker 8 (42:07):
Thank you, you have a wonderful night. Happy for it.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Thank you for Derek.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
Derek shall be interesting stuff. We'll come back. Aaron, we'll
talk about that. Aaron Torres, Arnie Spanier and for Jason
Smith and Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
All Right, good evening, everyone, Aaron Torres, Arnie spani'er in
for the guys, Jason Smith and Mike Harmon here on
Fox Sports radio. Well, we're moving right along here. I
do want to get to Luis or Tease. Well, we
have time. He's the pitcher for the Washington Nationals. They
are going to investigate him. We'll leave it an investigation
(42:52):
right now. To gambling allegations. I guess back on June fifteenth,
or Teas his first pitch of the second inning, terran
the arose arena was not even close to.
Speaker 3 (43:04):
The strike zone, aaron that set off.
Speaker 4 (43:06):
An alert that was reportedly triggered by that action on
Ortiza's first pitch of the inning, being bet that it
was either going to be a ball or a hits batsman.
The next incident on similar action was another bad miss,
and that was on June twenty seventh, in the top
of the third inning, and he had another bad miss
(43:27):
out there. You know what they say, where there's smoke,
there's fire. This is not good for the gambling industry.
You gotta wonder here, we're investigating a couple people, how
many people are getting away with it that were not
investigating or is this just like a one or two
time thing?
Speaker 3 (43:45):
What do you think? Well, it's funny, you know.
Speaker 5 (43:47):
I was filling in with Dan Byer yesterday for Cavino
and Rich and we talked about this, and what I'd
be curious about is, obviously there was a disproportional amount
of money on this specific result, that a ball to
lead to third inning of this specific game.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
What I'd be.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
Curious about is how much is regularly bet right on
that type of hypothetical and then how much was bet
on this? You know, because I was telling Dan, I
was like, you know, that's the kind of fun bet
that you're sitting in a sports book, you're with your buddies,
a let's put ten dollars on, you know, a ball
to lead the inning or strike to lead the inning.
(44:23):
It's not something that you're like, oh, I'm gonna put
fifty grand down on, you know. And so I'm just curious,
and you know, like this is a great question for
a Bernie Fratto or a Todd Furman, like how much
money and how many spots would have to be wagered,
and how different it is than the normal wager on
that specific situation, Cause it's just, you know, one pitch
(44:47):
in one of one hundred and sixty two Major League
Baseball games doesn't raise a red flag. It's the amount
of money that was bet on it. So I find
it fascinating and it's crazy. But I'll also say this,
those integrity firms, they know what the heck they're doing.
Speaker 4 (45:01):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, you're right about that. What set
the alarm off, the alert off was the amount of
money that was bet on it. But that pitch was
way out of the strike zone. You got to put
it way out there so the batter doesn't swing at
it or attempt to swing at it. Yep, it's got
to be something so just egregious that nobody's gonna go
(45:22):
ahead and offer it that pitch. That's exactly what happened.
You think this goes on a lot. You think this
is kind of going under the radar or we're catching
everybody out there.
Speaker 5 (45:31):
I really believe, and maybe it's maybe I'm dumb for
saying this. I think these integrity firms are so good
and you know, like I know, you have Todd Furman
on your show every Sunday, right he says that actually,
like legal sports betting is actually you know, like like
there's less sketchy stuff going on now that it's legalized,
(45:52):
because you have all these integrity firms that are following it.
You know, as opposed to if it's underground, if it's this,
if it's that, I actually don't think that a lot
of stuff is happening and going unnoticed, because I mean, listen, Arnie,
how many I mean, Malik Beasley, Johntay Porter, Luis Ortie.
I mean we've had you know, seven eight of these
(46:14):
situations already, Calvin Ridley, on and on, and it's just like,
I actually don't think because I think that they're so
good at catching it and red flagging anything that's suspicious
that I actually don't think it's happening much more than
it's probably being caught.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
Do we have too many prop bets?
Speaker 4 (46:30):
I didn't even know you could bet on what the
first pitch of an inning is gonna be.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
In't that a little too much? I mean, let's be honest.
Speaker 4 (46:37):
Okay, it used to be you bet the game, the line,
and you bet the over under.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
Then we started breaking it down in.
Speaker 4 (46:43):
The quarters, first quarter of halftime, halftimeline, second half line.
Then we started putting passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards.
Now it's out of hand, I mean, betting first pitch and.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
All kinds of prop bets. Has it gotten too out
of hand.
Speaker 8 (47:00):
What.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
Yeah, I've heard a few people reference that. I don't
think so.
Speaker 5 (47:03):
I think you're a professional athlete making a lot of money,
be responsible, you know.
Speaker 3 (47:07):
It's it's it's like anything else.
Speaker 5 (47:09):
It's like, are there too many liquors because somebody you
know got sick and puked all over themselves.
Speaker 3 (47:15):
It's like, not just be responsible and don't be a jerk,
you know.
Speaker 5 (47:19):
And I think that to me, I don't think it's
on the gaming industry to say we have too much
because a couple athletes are getting selfish. And by the way,
and I know you know this, and I know the
audience knows this, but these guys get so much training
on what they can and cannot do. If these guys,
whether it's a John Tay Porter, whatever, gets suspended for
(47:40):
the rest of their careers, whatever, I have zero sympathy
because you know what you're signing up for. You know
the ramifications of getting caught and how do they get
in that situation?
Speaker 8 (47:50):
Though?
Speaker 3 (47:50):
Did they gamble and lose money? Did they take a bribe?
Speaker 4 (47:55):
If it's true, I mean, how much money can they
take a bribe for? After the salary in Major League Bass?
Speaker 5 (48:00):
Actually, well, really quick apparently Malik Beasley reportedly had some
pretty major money problems and that was what led to it.
I can't speak to this the we SORTI situation, although
I know we'll get more information in the coming days.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
All right, Wow, we're just flying by flying two hours
or in the books, we're halfway through the Power hours
coming up next. Remember we got a bonus hour too,
So if you want to get in Aaron underscore Torres,
I'm its thinking genius one. Aaron Torres already Spaniard for
the guys Fox Sports Radio
