This is the best of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best friend,
Mike Harmon. Charge us deleted twenty four to three over
the Vikings four forty to go in the third quarter.
Vikings out of the football Deep in charge of Territory.
We'll have more on this coming up in a few minutes.
Monty Blagios will have the latest. But the big NBA

(00:50):
gambling scandal, which exploded today continues to reverberate after a
big FBI investigation spanning at least eight months. Many NBA
luminaries personalities were taken in as part of this thing.
Chauncey Billups now no longer a head coach is He's
involved in a gambling ring where he was allegedly helping

(01:13):
to fix poker games involving couple of the biggest crime
families in the country. Then you had Damon Jones when
he was an assistant coach with the Lakers, allegedly telling people, Hey,
Lebron's not going to play tonight in a game, he
might want to bet against us and Terry Rozier. The
story we knew about from a couple of years ago
where he left a game early under mysterious circumstances and

(01:34):
there was a big spike in betting his undertotals for
that night, and he's been investigated. The NBA talked to
him about it. This is a story about a year ago,
and now we get the fact that this is part
of what the FBI is sweeping him up in. So
this is a big deal And there is nobody better
to talk to for the next few minutes on this

(01:54):
than our Vegas insider extraordinaire, Todd Furman, former oddsmaker at Caesar's,
analysts for CBS Sports Sports Line TSN. He's everywhere. He's
with us now, Todd, what's happening, man?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Hey, always good to catch up, guys. Wish it was
under slightly better circumstances. But this is currently the sports
landscape that we all live in, so better that we
address the issues at its root cause. Then let some
of these things fester and let that misinformation continue to
circulate like we've seen throughout media today.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Okay, so do that for us, get to the root
of it, the root cause. Talk about the big thing
for you coming off of the scandal.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
The big thing for this is it means the legal
process is working. And while a lot of people will
scoff at that notion, if we didn't have any form
of legalized sports betting, all of this would be swept
under the rug. It would be taking place in the Caribbean,
it would be taking place in nefarious spots with your
corner book maker. Instead, you had folks looking to try
and gain an edge, getting information through illicted channels and

(02:53):
moving that money through regulated sports books. Now to what amount,
we're not quite sure just yet. I don't want to
see speculate on the numbers that are being circulated. But
this is what legalized sports betting was meant to do.
Shine a brighter light, provided disinfectant. And while people can
say we can bury our head in the sand, you know,
the joke that I made is a player in an
NFL game can tear his ACL just because he doesn't

(03:15):
get an MRI to confirm it, they still know what's
a torn ACL. And it's very similar in this regard
that we can pretend sports betting isn't going to go
on any capacity if it wasn't legalized with a repeal
of past. But but the reality of it is it's
taking place, and we just now have a better vehicle
to be able to monitor and regulate it.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
Well, that was the thing all day, Todd. The number
of outlets that immediately began the well they need to
dissociate from the gambling, you know that and wherever you know,
pick pick your your sports book, and they just need
to put all that money back and go go away.
It's like to your point, like, no, that there are
processes in place.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
This has always existed.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Now, it's just we've got transparency at least to some
degree exactly.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
And that's the whole thing. I mean. I work for
a company that we had relationships with a lot of
the collegiate conferences. We provided a report on a regular
basis if there were irregularities that were picked up in
the betting market. Now, I know, player props are a
little bit different, and with the advent of the single
game parlay, all of these sports books need a lot
more offerings that the individual customers can tie into their

(04:19):
multipliers here. So you know, my issue with all of
this is, you know, do the sportsbook take some responsibility
quite frankly, yeah, in my opinion, they do. There's no
reason to be offering player props on guys that are ninth,
tenth or eleventh on NBA rosters. If you want to
offer them on the marquee players on a Tuesday night
in November, by all means, go ahead. But as soon
as you start to see anything that resembles in a

(04:40):
regular betting pattern, the alarm bell should go off, especially
if it's from accounts that are either no losers or
brand new accounts that are out there. So my opinion,
there's got to be a communication breakdown on some level,
and not being privy to that information, I'm very curious
what comes out in the wash and how all of
this gets tied together.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
So as as we look at this today, there's always
the report, Okay, this is what happened today.

Speaker 5 (05:04):
Is there more? Is something bigger? Coming. Do you think
there's something bigger coming or is this what.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
We got now and then in a year and a
half we'll get another gambling sweep somewhat like this.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
I think it's a great question, and one if I'm
speculating here without any information, that this is just kind
of the tip of the proverbial iceberg, that there will
be more information that comes to light. Unfortunately, in my opinion,
there'll be other players, maybe other coaches around the league
to get swept up in this. But I think what's interesting,
even over the course of twelve hours in the news cycle,
you know, we thought these were two separate stories, Chauncey

(05:34):
Billups involved in illicit poker games with their own set
of issues and Terry Rogier's stuff, which had been guest
investigated for the last year and a half. Then we
come to find out as the day goes on that
there was some connective tissue between these two things, and
it appears that Damon Jones, a member of the coaching
staff up there in Portland, was a little bit of
a problem. The report breaks about him sharing information about

(05:56):
Lebron James availability, and now all of a sudden, the
lid is kind of blown off. So I think we're
going to continue to accumulate information and more and more
is going to come to light, and probably not in
a positive manner.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Well, that's the thing when you go back into these
gambling things. Jason and I were, you know, talking about
it at the top of the show, Todd.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
You know, it.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
Takes from every TV show and movie we've ever had
about illicit card games and cons. Right, but we know
that people want access to athletes, and athletes want everybody
to fawn on them, which means you get to the
storytelling time and maybe that one piece of information, whether

(06:35):
knowingly or not, that you've now given someone the edge
and you've set things in.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
Motion, and so is so that's the question.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, the events is today honestly harm it feels like
we have blue chips meeting rounders, creating a major motion picture.
I mean, the highlight that was circulating across social media
of Terry Rogier turning the ball over at the top
of the key looked like Tony And last time I
checked what Tony got his a's and TV you don't
just watch the tube in that class. You actually have
to focus on your academics. Meanwhile, for the poker games

(07:05):
and everything else that comes out around it. Look, high
stakes a type athletes are always going to be around
these situations. And I'm not sure if it becomes the
facto guilt by association that one of the poker clips
that came out from the Friends podcast that was out
there both are the gentlemen that are professional poker players
may or may not have been at my wedding. So
there is a little bit of connective tissue to some

(07:26):
of this stuff that goes on.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
So and so, if I'm reading this right, at your wedding,
you had a big backroom poker game, high stakes in
your bloomsmen, that is that is not what I said.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
We didn't have X ray technology.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
I've already a ton I've already tweeted that out. I'm sorry,
I can't.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
I can't change that.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
We didn't have any members of Geneviez or the Chasy
crime family in attendance, at least not to my knowledge.

Speaker 6 (07:53):
But look, when you're.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Around the gambling industry in any capacity, whether it be
sports or poker, there's always going to be that proverbial
vendim where sports is on one side, pokers on the
other and there is still a very large overlap between.

Speaker 6 (08:05):
The two communities.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
That's it. Six degrees of separation.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
Yeah, I mean, look, I remember when the Wildcats had
their scandal all those years ago for point shaving. Those
were guys that I ended up having gotten tickets from
for years to Look.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
That's how it works. And as we know, Smith, anytime
there's a scandal, the first thing I'm going to the
Newswire to try and find is if the Harmon brothers
are associated to nefarious activity around the world.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
You know, well, you know where the Harmon brothers were
last week? Right?

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Ah, that I don't.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
But they were sitting behind the bench last night at
the Rose Garden. We got quite the story.

Speaker 5 (08:40):
No, dude, you kidding. They were in Paris at the
Louver last week, both of them.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Well then, you know, credit credit to you armed for
showing up to work knowing that you have those fancy
French tools working in your favor somewhere, being fenced on
the black.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
Market somewhere somehow.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
So, hey, Todd, now that we get and Vegas insider
Todd Ferman our guest heres break down the NBA gambling scandal. Obviously,
the big name involved in this is Lebron James, who
has not been named in this report. It was just Hey,
Damon Jones, who was who was kind of with the
Lakers when Darvin ham was there.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
Let it be known that.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Hey, allegedly Lebron's not playing tonight and money went down
against the Lakers. Do we need to hear anything from
Lebron on this? Like does he need to like seeing
this and how you think this might unfold? Like do
we need some kind of statement or does he just
not say anything unless something happens which we need to
hear from him?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
For No, I think he should be as bad as
buttoned up as possible around this whole situation because the
reality of it is, unless Lebron James knew when he
told Damon Jones he was or wasn't going to be
available for games when Jones wasn't on the coaching staff,
knowing where that information was going. In my opinion, Damon
Jones is the weak link that broke the proverbial chain.
If Lebron's talking to a friend or colleague, Hey, I'm

(09:53):
not going to be out there tonight, then I don't
think he did anything wrong. But what it does call
into question, and you know, why some people have a
right to be critical of what goes on is the
NBA player availability report. This is why that people scoff
at those notions. Why the NBA needs to do a
better job and hold their teams accountable. Why college coaches
like Lane Kiffin, who treated as a joke, create problems.

Speaker 6 (10:15):
You get the.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Wrong personalities poking around professional organizations or on a worst
case level, around college campuses doing these kinds of things
to see what players are going to be out there.
The NFL knew what they were getting themselves in for.
There's a reason the injury report is available on Wednesday,
Thursdays and Fridays, and they're about as transparent as any
league in sports. I think every league needs to begin
to understand why this information needs to be out there,

(10:38):
and whether it's a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball
or an NHL team being required to share their starting
goalie information. The more information that you put above board
that's out there for general public consumption, it alleviates some
of the concerns that are inevitably going on behind the scenes.
And for all these coaches who believe it's a little
bit of smoke and mirrors, you can create all the

(10:59):
smoke and mirrors you on until it completely blows up
in your face and this becomes the end result.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
He is Vegas insider extraordinary Todd Furman. Check him out
on Twitter at Todd Furman. See him on CBS Sports
Line TSN Todd is always appreciated. Or see him around
a poker table in Vegas eating Oreo cookies. You know
he's bluffing, Todd. Thanks a bunch, buddy. We'll talk to
you next week.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
I actually prefer hydrox when I'm sitting at the table.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Actually done. Thanks for stopping down, buddy. We appreciate you.
Great stuff there from Todd Furman, but like all of it, right.
I I joked with you earlier. I was like, do
you wish Adam Silver is sitting there going? I'd really
like to talk about the no show jobs some more.
Can we go back to that?

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (11:39):
I remember that one.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
That one was great.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
We can talk about Yeah that will actually go plant
some trees?

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Will that make it better?

Speaker 4 (11:46):
I mean, because this, I mean it's so unwieldy and
takes you in a million spots, and the injury report
is definitely where we're at right. He references college football
We've had a couple of instances of player evai ability
and we're talking slap on the wrist fines. Right, there's
no if that's all you're gonna do. I mean, you

(12:07):
get penalized more for your idiot students running onto the
field than you do for falsifying player availability data. And
there's the latest in the long list of grievances I
have with the way things get adjudicated and processed in
our collegiate, slash professional and professional sports.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Coming up next, we got the Play of the Day
coming your way. And how about a hot take for
Game one of the World Series. After big news today,

Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Hello, Welcome in side hour too The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
I'm standing up in the studio.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
From a forty years, Tirerac's been helping customers find the
right tires for how, what and where they drive. Shipped
fast and free backed by Free Road, has protection with
convenient installation options like mobile tire installation. Tire act dot
Com is the way tire buying should be. Well, here
we are right now, six and a half to go
in the fourth quarter and the Chargers owning the Minnesota

(13:59):
Vikings thirty.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
Four to ten.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Right now.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
It has been all Chargers from the jump. It's been
all kinds of struggle for the Vikings. We'll have more
in this game in about fifteen minutes. Carson Wentz playing
with a bad elbow, bad arm. Heard it earlier in
the game, his left arm. He keeps holding it after
every play, so you know he's trying to play through
some kind of pain. But boy, I'll tell you what

(14:22):
two big things out of this Number one we'll have
a big hot take on JJ McCarthy in two. The
guy who would come in for Carson Wentz kind of
looks like Blake Snell. Max Brosburg, b Rex Brosburg kind
of looks like Blake Snell a little bit like, hey,
here he is, well, okay, Los Angeles tonight, fly out
tomorrow start game one for the Dodgers. Kind of a
little like Blake Snell. So at this point, why is

(14:47):
he not in the game, Well, he's pitching tomorrow night.
You don't want to, you know, you want him to
go as long.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
As he can and gave up.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Well, I mean, at this point, there's six twenty three left,
you're down twenty four points. He can't hand the ball
off twice and then punt and that coime on e
the doll and whoever else wants.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
To after all you need is a touchdown on sidekick,
touchdown on sidekick, touchdown on sidekick, field.

Speaker 5 (15:10):
Goal, and the game is tied.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Now.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
I appreciate the Addison touchdown, I mean that did help
one of my fantasy squads, but otherwise, because he's getting
wrecked on every.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Down at this point between the whole way and and
you know, it's it's coming out of the game now. Really,
he just got destroyed again. Kevin McCarthy.

Speaker 5 (15:28):
You got to understand, man, I mean to be serious
about it now for a second.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Is that you're losing this game. It's over and you
know that he's been getting drilled the entire game. You're
not going to score twenty four points in the last
six guys, what do you do him? What do you
what are you doing? I mean, this is this is
just I don't I don't know what's happening. Conn will
either throw the flag for Vin McCarthy, Kevin o'conn. That's okay,
Kevin McCarthy, go back into your acting and the shutdown.

Speaker 5 (15:53):
Let's end the shutdown. Come on, macarthy, get in there
and the shutdown. See I was going down down, I
was going down the road of the actor. Kevin McCarthy.
I'll tell you remember him.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
He was in He was an invasion of the body
Snatchers and Piranha Gholies three.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Not goonies but goolies. Remember the goolies. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
That was like coming out yeah, kind of the same
thing again. It give us your money to go see
it inner space. He was in a lot of stuff.
Uhf play roll with Michael Legends.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
Okay, wow, because you know, I gotta give you the
specificity as to who we're looking at here, right because
you think as he remember of the brat pack, one
of those no no no, as the older guy, uh
legend and a.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
Lot of stuff.

Speaker 4 (16:42):
But yeah, for for Kevin O'Connell, like literally, as we're
talking about it, why is he still in the game,
he goes back on a seven step drop and just
gets absolutely obliterating. You can pick one, right, die got
him high?

Speaker 6 (16:56):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (16:56):
And then right at the same time, he's getting submarined,
so I just just awful, comes up holding the arm, wincing,
and immediately runs to the sideline. So yeah, they've they've
got a lot of work to do. And again Sam
Darnold is somewhere going, well, it wasn't all me, was it, man?

Speaker 1 (17:15):
I mean he look, that's the thing that Carson Wentz
has not played well. Obviously we'll get to the football
part of it coming up in a little bit, but
I mean, really, you want to protect you play it,
I mean, protect you it's over if it's a one
score game, even it's a two score game.

Speaker 5 (17:28):
I get Okay, we could score, get the ball back.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
You're down by twenty four, Okay, you're down, but I mean, really,
it's a it's a touchdown, two point conversion on side kick, touchdown,
two point conversion on side kick, touchdown, two point conversion,
and then the game is tied. Yeah, I lost track
of minutes. In five minutes, that's right, he's getting hit.
I mean, they have been in the backfield. The Chargers
defense has been in the backfield all night. Right, there's

(17:51):
been nothing that the Vikings have been.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
Able to Darius up play.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
The right side of the line has been hurt and
came in without a couple of starters. Right, you're going
he just like the Chargers on the other side had been.
Right tonight, they get their offensive line back, and guess what,
big numbers for Herbert, big numbers for the running game.
But yeah, the Wentz leading him in the game was
just unconscionable.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Yeah, you got it.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
You gotta take him out, I mean, and then he
left the game after the last play, holding his arm,
running off the field, like, come on, man, you got
you gotta help your players out a little bit.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
Man, you just just left him out there.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
But also, you know, he's hurt, you know, he's everybody
sees it. Everybody sees it on the field, right, But yeah,
we look for concussions. How about you looking so hey?

Speaker 6 (18:30):
Man?

Speaker 1 (18:30):
The guy is in absolute pain, grabbing his arm after
every single play. Why would you leave him out there
to get hit? And the last play he got absolutely drilled.
I think he's crying on the sideline right now, he's inside.
He is, He's crying on the side, destroyed. He's in
so much pain.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Like, what are you doing?

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Man?

Speaker 5 (18:47):
Like, that's that's goaching malpractice.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
There's your stat raid five sacks, thirteen pressures on thirty
two drop backs, forty percent pressure rate from the Chargers tonight.
And we've been waiting. Weren't the more consistent up front?
They went and themde trade for Oway. They get Khalil Mack.
Who how he's on a football field again. This is
how you understand and you know, football players are different,

(19:11):
not just bigger, faster, stronger, but the ability to come
back and just say, okay, yeah, my arm was twisted
four weeks ago into a really uncomfortable and awkward position
that you see in horror movies where the guy then
looks you dead cold, in the eye and twists his
arm back into shape before he starts chasing you. That's
essentially what Khalil Mack has done in the last month,
and now he's back to terrorizing quarterbacks. So yeah, they

(19:34):
got a lot of soul searching to do a lot
of shots. ISO on JJ McCarthy on the sideline, I
have no doubt the broadcast booth questioning, okay, so where
is he in this continuum and where you go for
or is it does it become brosmer ball Well, now,
speaking of the broadcast booth, they actually talked about this
on Amazon. We have a little bit of it right here,

(19:54):
talking about Carson Wentz being in the game.

Speaker 8 (19:56):
Chargers Rush five. Carson back to pass throws to the
left arm was hit as he grew and it's incomplete
Carson very slow to get up. His left arm is
a complete disaster. I mean, with all due respect, I'm
not a doctor, obviously, but I mean, how many times
do we have to see him hold his arm and
win him pain and run off the.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Field by Vikings Radio Network on the clumb here, it's
obvious to everybody. It's obvious to everybody that that needs
to happen. So again, we'll have more on this game
coming up in a few minutes. Again, thirty four to
ten is the lead right now, just over four minutes
left to go. The Chargers have the football trying to
run some clock here. They look like they're going to

(20:39):
get the w but again, hey, you never know, Hey,
Brosmer could come off the bench and Subody light it up.
Sure now thanks to Todd Furman, who was phenomenal earlier
with us about a half hour ago of our Vegas
Insider with all kinds of great takes on the NBA
gambling scandal. Look the biggest story in sports today. Chauncey Billups,
who has been temporarily relieved as his job as NBA

(21:00):
head coach, Chicago splitter Uh Terry Rozier, who's been temporary
relieved his status as an NBA player, Damon Jones, former
NBA player, and volunteer ish assistant coach in the NBA
have all been wrapped up in a very big gambling
sting and ring operation that the FBI has been investigating

(21:21):
and prosecuting over the course of the last year and
a half. We get the story earlier today that of
the gambling scandal Terry Rozier, who was first looked at
after a game a couple of years ago in which
he left the game early and there was an inordinate
number of amount of money bet on his understats for
the night, where according to reports, he let people know

(21:44):
he was going to be out of the game early
with an injury. He's going to fake an injury, and
so a lot of people went and they bet the
money on his understats, and that came to everybody's attention.
That's part of the investigation. Damon Jones, who was a
volunteer assistant ish with the Lakers oh when Darvin Ham
was the coach, knew Lebron James for a long time.

(22:04):
According to reports, had the inside information that Lebron James
is going to miss a game that night. Let people know, hey,
Lebron's missing the game. A lot of money bet against
the Lakers that night. And then you have Chauncey Billups
outside of this, being wrapped up in a poker ring
involving some of the biggest crime families in the country
in which he helped recruit fish to games. You know,

(22:26):
people come to games where the mafia can these guys
can play big stakes poker games. And they can fix
them and take all their money. And that's exactly what happened.
Chauncey Phillips was a star player, and apparently this happens
where big athletes and personalities get paid to come play
poker games that are fixed so Mafia and other people

(22:46):
can collect a lot of money from big gamblers. And
the way in which the Mafia went into this situation,
with all the electronics and technology using to fix these games,
it's just absolutely stunning. Now, we talked about this a
little bit last hour, but you want to know something
a little bit different and and a little bit of
a little bit of different take on this story. I've

(23:07):
heard a lot today of all the tip of the
iceberg here comes to God.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
This is not that lot. This is not the last
you're hearing about.

Speaker 6 (23:13):
This.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
First thing I'm gonna say is this. I kind of
think that's gonna be it for little while. If this
is the result of what year and a half investigation
and it's Chauncey Billups and Damon Jones and Terry Rogier, Yeah,
I think that it's gonna be a little while before
we hear about some other names.

Speaker 6 (23:29):
Right.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
I don't think they're gonna go death by a thousand cups,
you and you and you, and then now you've got
a giant, you know, cadre of guys put together and
you link it all into a much larger enterprise.

Speaker 1 (23:44):
And I don't think you're gonna get Drims and Drabs
Shawshanks style, no believing they'd love to throw out and
have out the big names and be able to do
it if this is that long an investigation, not that
it's not doesn't happen. But you see the people that
are that are here that are doing this. I mean
Chauncey Billups, that's that's a different story because that's well, wow,
it's a name, and Damon Jones are guys and look

(24:05):
at terrors. Here's got a big contract, right, he had
a ninety four million dollar contract, but he is like
the ninth or tenth guy off the bench. And great
stuff from from Todd Furman saying, hey, we don't need
to be offering prop bets on the ninth and tenth
guys coming off the bench, where it's something like that,
offer big prop bets on the stars.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
That's what we could do.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
The sportsbooks can do to help their way past this
because this is how it's supposed to go. It's supposed
to work this way, where hey, when we see improprieties,
we let know, we let the government know, we let
people know when we think things are going on that
are and kosher. And here comes the government and the
fact that they have arrest and they have this big
gambling sting shows you that what's going on legally works.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
And I think that was the big point to take
because it's been a lot the hot take nonsense, as
always folks that dabble into businesses and stuff that they
really have no idea how it works. Todd giving you
the behind the scenes about that transparency of information exchange
of hey, something seems a bit out of sorts. Here
is I don't think something that was common knowledge. Now

(25:03):
you and I have been in this a long time.
I've known Todd a long time, and we've talked about
these things. As you know more and more, I guess
embracing of gambling had occurred, and you started to see
some of these deals come to fruition that that you
would find out and you talk about that kind of
information exchange. But for everybody else to thinking it's like, well,

(25:24):
it's still all shadow it's like, no, that's the whole
point is that you have this level of transparency and
we have no idea on the grand scheme Jason, of
how much of a percentage this is right because generally
on player props, you've got a pretty low.

Speaker 5 (25:38):
Limit on a lot of this.

Speaker 4 (25:39):
And this is where when you're talking about the ninth
guy in a rotation, there's games he's suddenly gonna be
a d MP.

Speaker 5 (25:46):
Now is because he said his.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
Tummy hurt, his foot didn't feel right, or just game
situation didn't get him in. But for a minute or two,
there's a lot that can go on. But and that's
where you really get into the sticky wicket of it,
particularly when you start seeing heavy money come in, right
because if normally you got saying for nice round numbers,
ten thousand dollars that come in on a player for

(26:07):
all these props, but then suddenly there's tenfold. Yeah, something's up.
It's pretty clear, right, and somebody knows something. It's not
suddenly a whim of like hey that Rosier. I like
the cut of his gym tonight. You know, he looked
he didn't look like he was moving. We had a
full capacity. Let's put a bunch of money on his unders. No,
that's not how it works. Now, the other part of

(26:28):
it is this, Right, here's a big scandal. It's going
to rock the NBA. Big changes are coming. I gotta
be honest with you.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
This is acceptable fallout for the NBA considering what they
hope to accomplish being partners in gambling. Same thing with
the NFL. Right, there's like we talked about with Bad
Bunny doing the the halftime performed for the Super Bowl

(26:56):
last night. The NFL knows they're going to take a
lot of criticism on it because of how polarized we
are politically, but they know, hey, we need to grow
the game globally. We're okay taking the heat from people
here on that. Knowing that Bad Money being one of
the biggest international superstars in the world, that's gonna help
us down the road.

Speaker 5 (27:12):
Well, that's a win for us. We'll take this.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
Like the NBA, in the NFL is saying, okay, stories
like this because no one's gonna go crazy over Terry Rozier,
Damon Jones, and Chauncey Billups right like their names in
the NBA, but you know they're not big stars it's
not fabric of the game where Game seven of the
Western Conference Finals went one way because of a gambling scandal.
This is acceptable fall up what we saw today. Yes,

(27:36):
it's a big story today, and it's good that it's
that the government is getting in on this, but what
happened today really in the overall arching scheme of things,
this is the story's gonna be big today into tomorrow,
and then we'll be onto something else. By tomorrow night,
it's gonna be the World Series and onto the weekend
in the NFL, because this is not something that fans
are gonna go, oh wow, you are ruining the game

(27:58):
and I'm never gonna watch. Like twenty years years ago,
this would have been an incredibly big deal, but now
it's like, oh yeah.

Speaker 5 (28:03):
Like twenty years ago, steroids and baseball is a big deal.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
Now, oh yeah, whatever, Like now this is and this
story involving these level of players, and honestly, when it
doesn't involve the stars, it's easier to blow off. Doesn't
make it right, but that's the case. And now this
this is such a smaller fish kind of situation where
the NBA will say, yeah, we'll take this bad for
the benefits we're gonna get from everything going on with

(28:29):
gambling money and DraftKings, everything else, all the stuff we
have going on. That's that's our partnership and that's a
big deal that that's great for both of us, and
it's great for the most part. So we'll take the
bad now because the overarching the rest of the stuff,
the long game is better for us.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
Yeah, and this is good, right. The transparency, as we've
talked about and as we did with Todd, Folks will
be able to hear that on the podcast and and
hear it again later is good for everybody to show
that the system works right behind the boards when they
when they see something that looks a little out of
whack with the normal betting patterns and the way money flows,

(29:05):
that you've put a flag on it and you start
asking questions, and you get that information to the conferences,
to the teams, to the commissioners as they exist, and
that's just better for everybody. But you know, you're not
gonna be able to control one hundred percent of bets again,
trying to figure out what the global market is on
a lot a lot of this you're guessing, right, It's

(29:26):
like trying to guess how many people watched a TV show,
you can guess. But if fifty people are in a
bar here, here, here, and here, and you only counted
them for two or ten, well you're not getting the
full scope of how many people are there, or you've
counted too high whatever based on capacity of a venue.
The point being that all information is good information. Yeah,

(29:49):
you got to wear the egg on your face because
in the moment it's like, oh, look at this lawlessness.
Everybody in every league is apprized of this, right, whether
it's signage coming in and out of the building. We've
talked about this for years. Just because you have a
couple of bad actors doesn't mean you have to throw
the whole thing out right. A lot of money has
made a lot of the players make a lot of money,

(30:09):
and I Garan Dant in those locker rooms, you've got
people that are policing this stuff.

Speaker 6 (30:14):
Right.

Speaker 4 (30:14):
Whenever there's a story, We've got guys in the NFL
clase and those guys.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
What happens that gets shut down immediately, and that's good
for the business. So for Adam Silver, while he's got
to wear it today and has to talk about some
of the uncomfortable stuff. He can he can talk about
the wins as this and be a willing partner, get
that transparency, exit out about a Fresca exit swalling down
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.

(30:39):
Coming up next, we break down a big blowout on
Thursday Night football, a big fat zero for Quenton Johnston,
but a big win for the Chargers over the Vikings.

Speaker 5 (30:51):
The quarterback drama. We get into it next right here,
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Be sure to catch live of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.

Speaker 5 (31:06):
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon Live from the
Fox Sports Radio Studios. The Chargers run away and hide.
They beat the Vikings thirty seven to ten thirty seven
in a row. Nobody better to break it all down
with than joining us right now on the hot line

(31:27):
NFL on Fox Insider Extraordinary. You can follow him on
Twitter at Jay Glazer. It is Jay Glazer, Jay, what's
happening Man? Happy Thursday.

Speaker 6 (31:36):
Appreciate a guy that was up coming out with Josh
so one thing I think we could hear well. I
hopefully plugged once from playing through you know, so many injuries.
He is certainly not one of those guys instead of
the reclamation projects that we see that a baker. You know,
I don't think he's one of those guys where you

(31:58):
look call man, if he's with Kevin O'Connell, then he
can get the best out of him. He's not one
of those guys. And you know, I know Kevin needed
him to be, but I don't think that was Carson man.
Carson is a little bit different, you know.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
And the thing is, Jay is like watching the end
of this game and I'm going take him out of
the game. You can say, he's getting hit so hard
on every play and he's not just hurt, he's injured.

Speaker 5 (32:19):
How does Kevin Coronell not take him out of the game.

Speaker 6 (32:22):
Well, listen, I think there is one thing about guys
who are playing for injuries and get your honor to
fight hurt so the guys can go, he can go,
and I think you know that huge drop off under
that he's like, well that's totally different also, but you know, look,
here's the deal. Also showed you guys know the deal
JESJ McCarthy. All Right, they've been working him out for

(32:42):
the last couple of weeks. He still just hasn't been
where he needed again. I talked to Kevin about it.
He's like, look, he's only starting. He started on one
or two games, right, So he's like everybody, if this
was like a Greggel veteran, we get him back. He
pushed back, and he doesn't need to be one hundred percent.
But because you know what I have to do with
developing him, you don't want to push him back in

(33:04):
there before he's ready and then all of a sudden,
where you're trying to help, you know, build some growth
in there, have an upward trajectory. He's just playing from
you know, behind the apole the whole time. He's not
going to grow. So we in this case you need
him to be one hundred percent because he does use
his legs a lot, is very mobile, and you don't
want to put him in there where now it's going
to set him back. And plus he's like everybody kind

(33:25):
of looks at it like it's got fran Tarkin died,
like he has done itything yet we don't want to
push your name right to push him in when he's
not ready to go because then he's kind of just
fighting for his life back there, and you're not able
to grow and progress and build up that he wants
to build. He goes, I got to do what's right
for the long term for this kid. Now for the
short term of this for this team, and he's you know,

(33:47):
the next couple of weeks. The long term of this kid,
it's a long term, you know, relationship. They were hopefully
we're going to be in here, so he's got to
do it for a long time.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
And I get that.

Speaker 4 (33:55):
And that's curiosity now because we watched wins get beaten
up today. Jay, that offensive line has been banged up
all years. I don't know how you how you rush
McCarthy back at this point then well.

Speaker 6 (34:06):
There, the point is it's not gonna be roughs. Yeah,
that's why they game all the time. They wanted to
make sure I had time. I know, even in the
bye week, he did a lot of work here with
coaches on his own, kind of volunteer to go and
do some stuff and they work with him, so he
could you know, he still has to pick up more
of the game, but he's a young guy who has
no experience, so there's a lot there they have to do.

(34:27):
But you know, their their plan all along was a
couple of weeks ago when JJ came back. Their hope
was that Carson could be more than serviceable and you know,
wouldn't get hurt in these the last game, and that
the plan along was to start him last weekend in
this game. Then they have the mini buy and they
kind of you know, mini buys, and you have the

(34:47):
whole weekend and then they could really you know, see
if they could ramp JJ up come back for the
next game. That was the plan all along.

Speaker 1 (34:53):
Now, Jay, I got a hot take for you for
the Chargers. You ready, you're gonna love us? Okay, Now
be Garrett for Mahomes is having the great year. Dak
has had an incredible year. But maybe Joe alt is
the NFL MVP. I mean just maybe that injury that
I mean, we haven't talked about that enough. Do you
talk about an injury that just set a team with
Super Bowl aspirations back? And now you see tonight the

(35:16):
impact thirty seven points against the Vikings on a Thursday
night and have a running back though.

Speaker 6 (35:21):
Now, Yo, for he's been you know, they've been in
the market for a running back then they have found
a guy. Two big games for him over one hundred yards.
But all but it's not just Salt, it is the
whole line has been banged up, right, Losing boat tackles
has been massive for them. Uh, and not have a
consistency and they're effected and things like that. But yeah,
having a guy with Joe Walt, at least you got
that guy in there. You have, you know, as a

(35:43):
as a quarterback, you're looking like, oh God, I got
somebody here, Icky count Okay if they get to me.
But yeah, I'll tell you what Purpot's doing so well
and a lot of these other quarterbacks should start taking note.
Is the way he is running with it because he's
not being careless. He's taken off, he's running, he's finding
these open teams, but he's keeping himself out of harm's way.

(36:04):
He's got a really great job with that.

Speaker 4 (36:07):
Yeah, for all the hits he's taken and that he
keeps going, you've got no depth in that wide receiving core.

Speaker 5 (36:12):
How dangerous is this team overall? Jay? What do you think.

Speaker 6 (36:16):
The end?

Speaker 5 (36:16):
How dangerous do you think the Chargers are in their
current state?

Speaker 6 (36:21):
I think the Chargers looked you know, they need to
get guys back from injury and listen, losing Derwin tonight,
I don't know the extent and I text him. I
haven't heard back from yet. I know he's in walking boots.
That is a huge thing because that's the heart and
soul of your team, and that's it seems like every
time they want to move forward, they get hit with
an injury that kind of sets them back. That stuff

(36:41):
that could hopefully it doesn't for them, but yeah, they
have the talent to go with anybody without a doubt,
especially if you know they have to get their running
game going. They've gotten down in the last two weeks,
so it'll be you know, it'll be interesting to see
how they respond based on what sir Win situation is,
but also building off of this because when you see

(37:01):
it tonight, especially God, this wasn't just to get to
any defense. Is a Brian Forrest right The way they
were able to go ahead get after him, that's teams
don't do that to them. So this needs to be
something that they build off of.

Speaker 1 (37:13):
All Right, Jada, to take you outside of the game tonight,
Aaron Rodgers getting ready for the big quote revenge Aldo
don't ask him that it's not a revenge.

Speaker 6 (37:19):
Game for far though it's it's definitely not.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
It's definitely He said today that hey, he wants to
retire a Packer when it's all said and done, hope
and go back. There are things cool with him in
the Packers now because it was two years of drama, Janey,
it's everyday drama for a couple of years.

Speaker 6 (37:35):
No, no, no doubt there was. And but it's I
think Karen's in the place now. Like he said it,
He's like, man, everything great to the half of my
life happened because I played football for the Packers. And yeah,
I don't think he has many resentment there now. I
know he loves playing the Pittsburgh loves Arthur Smith, loves

(37:56):
Mike Tomlin, loves Arthur Smith. And I still think they've
got to figure out, you know, the ways they can
go over there. You know in Pittsburgh too. It's like
maybe you've always had a worry about the offense number
of the defense. Now it's kind of flipped and I
would rather have it that way. Okay, we finally have
our offense or a quarterback there and defensively, pamlic Cooe
has helped jump in and fix that defense, so it's

(38:16):
kind of where you want it.

Speaker 5 (38:18):
This is great, though, Jay.

Speaker 4 (38:19):
I mean, look, I celebrated a birthday last week and
Aaron Rodgers is now going to be like fifty before
he retires now right.

Speaker 6 (38:27):
Anyway, he's playing right now, let's tack on another twenty.

Speaker 5 (38:30):
As long as these guys keep going, I don't feel
so old. Do you think he plays another year? Like
the pat and the Steelers have said.

Speaker 6 (38:35):
That, I think it's too early. I think it's too
early to tell. I really do. And you know, I've
never talking to when we were training this off season.
I'm like, hey, it's issue last year. Make sure every
stadium you're out, like say goodbye to your own little thing.
And I didn't get an answer back like definitely, yeah, yeah, yeah,
definitely I'm out or anything like that for guys like
when I know they're done. It's pretty emphatic about it.

(38:56):
But I think I've told you the stories in the past.
These guys have been done. Tony he was Donny and
now sitting all of sudden a month later calling him back,
and he called me and said, hey, man, you think
Timitty and Thomas it's Mike Smith and Thomas Mintchel's's head coach,
and jam and the Falcons. They had me back for
another year. Am I told, what what are we doing here?
And I can't hire you know less than ten yards

(39:17):
short of a Super Bowl, which is what happened when
they're playing fam Family, an actual championship game. And we actually,
I don't know if I've told the story here. We
flew Mike Smith, the head coach of the Falcons, out
to Manhattan Beach to meet with me and Tony and
kind of go over with him and Tony like Tony
was like, hey, Jay, you talk. He's not confrontational at all.
So this Minty about hey, is what we want to do?

(39:40):
This the way you do it? It's first mint He's like,
how do I And part of it was like Tony's
not going to go to champ and He's like, well,
how do I do that? Jays tell all the other
players that you know, one guy is not going to
go to the champ. I said, it's pretty easy. You say, okay, guys,
show a hands here, who's my fourteen Pro Bowls? Okay?
I said to May fourteen Pro Bowls? You get the
miss Champy's not.

Speaker 5 (39:59):
Hard, Okay, So I mean did that get you three percent? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (40:03):
Did that get you three percent? Or just a couple
of free dinners from Gonzales?

Speaker 6 (40:07):
And come on, Tony's brought me enough? Dirreks were good.

Speaker 5 (40:11):
All right, Let's go to Denver.

Speaker 4 (40:13):
A big win fourth quarter for the Ages against the Giants.
But it's not about the game.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (40:18):
The postgame comments from Sean Payton, it's awful hard not
to interpret it at face value in terms of the
Russell Wilson, though he tried to walk it back.

Speaker 5 (40:28):
What's say you?

Speaker 6 (40:29):
Okay, so listen, I know what he thinks of Russell.
When I heard the quote, I actually thought he was
talking about Jackson Dart. I really did. I think Russell's
this thing from his mind. It really was, I don't think.
But they were talking about Jackson Dart and they're I know, defensively,
they were worried and they're like, man, this kid him,
it's kataboo. I was talking to him. They're like, they

(40:50):
got such an idea and identity. Now they believe they're different.
So this is not me covering for Sean Truffy. If
I think he said it, I'm like, oh, no doubt.
I have a lot of fun on make fun of
Fun now. But the way I heard it too, I
heard it for Jackson. Then I saw Russell say that.
I'm like, oh oh yeah, I could see that too.

Speaker 8 (41:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (41:07):
And and trust me, I think if Sean meant it
as a shot at Russell, I think Sean want to
shot back at him. No doubt. We have never seen
Sean Payton by this time. I think if you really
meant about Russell, he would he would he would definitely
shoot shoot daggers at at Russell over.

Speaker 5 (41:22):
But I really don't think it was Jay Glazer. He's
on Twitter at Jay Glazer. Jay, you want to say,
keep fighting the good fight.

Speaker 1 (41:29):
I know it's ADHD Awareness month and you're speaking up
about your journey.

Speaker 5 (41:32):
Awesome stuff. Man, What's something that's going on now?

Speaker 6 (41:36):
Oh man? Now what you know? I've usually I finally
found a prescription that worked for me for ADHD called Calbury.
So I've been talking about to this non stimulant, I
take it a night. All the stimulants I've taken this
really not work well for depression all. So Calbury's huge
for me. It's it's it's pretty game changes for me.
I've never thought I could take Sunday night because me

(41:57):
down and guess we focused helps me next day on
Foxonville Sunday. But it's been really great.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
Jesz, keep fighting the good fight, my friend. We'll talk
to you next week. Enjoy the weekend, appreciate stopping down
money socking. There goes Jay Glazer the best. Hey, Sean,
what are you doing?

Speaker 2 (42:11):
Man?

Speaker 5 (42:11):
What are you doing?

Speaker 4 (42:14):
Look, it's a question we have to ask because we know, Look,
Jay's got relationships, the relationship business, and certainly there are
some coaches that that we know he's got the the
extra line on and that he will call them out.

Speaker 5 (42:26):
I mean we've had him do it with Tomlin.

Speaker 1 (42:27):
Yeah, I'm sure. Now the biggest thing, who do you
think has bought j Moore drinks? Tony Gonzalez or Bruce Arians?
Ludy Oh the stories with.

Speaker 5 (42:37):
Us in the background.

Speaker 6 (42:38):
Yeah that is.

Speaker 4 (42:39):
We got Howie Long as the uber driver and we've
had Bruce Arians enjoying a cocktail in the background. There
were several of those day drinking with Bruce Arians. Yeah, sure,
that's what do you think drank? Their beer is more
than more jt oh oh. See, now that that's what Alex,
that's ties it together. That's a that's a subtext sub

(42:59):
tweet comment by Alex Teischer.

Speaker 5 (43:01):
Right, thank you.

Speaker 1 (43:01):
