Speaker 2 (00:22):
Ever give us you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
I'm Steve Desager, Great eggs.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
And welcome in. It's another beautiful night here Fox Sports Radio,
Jason Smith Show with me Mike Carmon. There's no Jason Smith.
He may or may not get back tomorrow. I don't know.
We'll find out when the Big Voice guy brings us
in tomorrow night. Maybe he'll be sitting here, maybe he'll
be stuck in Michigan. Maybe the Muskrats had their revenge.

(00:52):
We don't know at How about a Fresco where you
find him on Twitter? You heard the laugh. It's our
buddy Rich Hornberger back with us for another night at Ornberger.
Where you find them in the Twitter verse. You hear
them in the mornings on San Diego Radio seven sixty
down there and on Saturday mornings on Countdown Here three
hours of glorious information and analysis to get you ready

(01:15):
for your wagering day and give you a little angle
as to how you watch your sporting events. Big Rich,
what's going on, buddy?

Speaker 5 (01:21):
Not too much, my friend.

Speaker 6 (01:22):
I love how you open the show where there is
no Jason. I thought you were gonna go with the
next line only.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Zul That is good. No, No, that that's it. I
could have yelled I'm the captain now, I've stage a
bloodless coup, and we could have had a rogue open
that had been done with the Mike Harmon show.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
I mean there's a million ways we could have done that.

Speaker 6 (01:43):
Absolutely, I'm glad to be back with you guys for
night two, even even though there's a tsunami watch here
on the West coast.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
It's funny. We were just talking about that, Steve de
Sager and I. I mean, it's one am potential, buddy.

Speaker 6 (01:59):
Interesting. Interesting, I'm very curious. I mean, we live, we're
not we're not quite on the water.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
We're water adjacent though, so we're we're well.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
We did just down the coast there, San Diego area.
I'm up the coast, you know, beach cities, So it'll
be a curiosity, certainly into the night after we get
off air, and probably just sitting there waiting in our
beach chairs with a stiff drink in our hand, waiting
to see what happens.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
Yeah, well, our maker take us tonight.

Speaker 6 (02:28):
We don't know, but at least for a little bit,
we're here with everybody.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah, we're gonna have some fun. And in the end,
it was a pretty good run, if that's how it ends.
I always say, if I'm gonna go down, I want
it to be spectacularly. I don't want, you know, the
lonely dude sitting in his house watching wrestling reruns, you know,
a silent heart attack. No, I want to fall off
a boat and have a shark gulp me. No, I
want I want to have something spectacular. Tsunami would would

(02:54):
rise to that level.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
I think there's absolutely no question about that.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Yeah, but no, certainly we could do without the Devi station.
We've had plenty in southern California, as folks are well aware.
Watching a lot of baseball tonight as well. We got
the Dodgers and the Reds getting after five to four show.
How Tanis struck out four times in this game, and
he hasn't been close watching the Yankees getting after it

(03:18):
Tigers with a big win. So uh, sports, sports, sports,
in it up, all around. We've got plenty from the
world of the National Football League. As we get back
into the throws of training camp and just two days
away from the Hall of Fame game. Uh, are you
really anticipating this one?

Speaker 5 (03:37):
Right?

Speaker 4 (03:38):
You're you're you're getting juiced to watch Trey Lance get
out there. Uh yeah, you know, excel it.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
So okay, I'll give you.

Speaker 6 (03:49):
I'll give you the pluses and the minuses of the
Hall of Fame game and the preseason in general. This
is usually the most excited I get. I would say, actually,
maybe it's more tomorrow that it really starts flowing. You know,
when you're turning on you know, these twenty four hours
sports networks like our own, like many that we all

(04:11):
subscribe to.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
And you know, you're reading the articles and.

Speaker 6 (04:14):
You're listening and you're watching, and you can hear the
general excitement. And then you know, even turn on the
network programming leading up to kickoff, and you know you're
you're hearing voices for the first time that you know,
you you walked away from what feels like years ago,
but it was only it was only just months, you know,

(04:34):
after the football season ended, and you're you know, you're excited,
and you know they're excited, even nervous, dare I say?
And and then kickoff happens and you realize, oh, this
is just like any other preseason game. We're barely going
to see starters throwing footballs, catching footballs, running with football's.
It's going to be a lot of guys who man,
you know, the times are short on the football field

(04:57):
for a lot of these guys in the preseason, and
they fought their way on to rosters and many of
them will never be on rosters again. And those are
the breaks, and so the football isn't great. A lot
of nervousness on the field as well. And then and
then you just sort of slog through the rest of
the preseason, signing up for fantasy drafts and the like.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
And so this is about as excited as I.

Speaker 6 (05:21):
Can possibly be four preseason football as days before it
actually kicks off.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Now I got my first notice, Hey, we're doing an
article on running back sleepers and breakthroughs. Can you give
us that by noon tomorrow. So you know, I've got
a homework assignment after I'm done with the show while
I wait for the tsunami. See, that's how I'll pass
the time.

Speaker 5 (05:39):
I'll get diving.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Down into those mid tier running backs and backups looking
to break through. As I mentioned, Trey Lance gonna get
the shot. And I'm still in that. Call me curious
going all the way back to when he was drafted
so highly by the forty nine ers, where they've gotten
a lot of things right and a couple of very
new notable misses, a little stop through in Dallas, and

(06:03):
now he comes to where Jim Harbaugh has great expectations
for for Justin Herbert. But I want to say, you know,
both both horrorball brothers. If nothing else, I know, I
gotta get on their good side, because the two of
the best heype men you're ever gonna find.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
Yeah, there's no question about it. I you know what,
I think.

Speaker 6 (06:24):
I think one of the things that the NFL really
did a nice job of over the years. And I
know this is probably it probably would be more commonplace
in other sports too if they were as popular.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
Is you don't just attach.

Speaker 6 (06:40):
Yourself to the star players you really find yourself attached
to many of these coaches as well.

Speaker 5 (06:45):
You reference the horrorbas of the world.

Speaker 6 (06:47):
But you know, even Bill Belichick, who wasn't friendly to
the media, was still one of those tropes that everybody
seemed to like to follow. Pete Carroll being back in
the league, I don't think is a better thing. And
then some of the new blood, the Dan Campbell's of
the world with the you know, biting kneecaps. Obviously his
lines will take the field, you know, help kick off

(07:08):
the football season. Like I think that's one of the
more unique parts of the NFL MIC is the fact
that we know not only so many of the players' names,
and I think there's there's a little bit more of
a fascination with them for obvious reasons, but also the
coaches and the coordinators are so immensely important to the
success of this league. You know, Sean McVeigh, they're asking

(07:31):
him about his you know, his uh Virgin Island uh
vacation where picks emerged from, you know what I mean, Like,
they're they're just as fascinating as the players now.

Speaker 5 (07:42):
And I think that was a smart move for the NFL.

Speaker 6 (07:45):
Because coaches obviously can and do oftentimes last much longer
in the league, and you can follow them from team
to team or potentially, if they're lucky, like a Mike Tomlin,
they can stick with one team for a very long time.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
Yeah, that is the always the fun game to play
in terms of longevity. You go back Tomlin at two
thousand and seven, Harbaugh eight, and then Andy Reid at
twenty thirteen. Your next up on the list is where
you get to McDermott, you get to McVeigh, and you
get to Shanahan all hired in twenty seventeen. To your point,
McVeigh as many people asking questions about what he puts

(08:20):
into his body and his workout regimen to get his
abs as they are about, you know, the back issues
we talked about with Matthew Stafford last night. I gotta
listen to the whole show. I mean, you find the
podcast wherever you get your audio. But it's just that
because we do have that turnover, and there's that curiosity
of what the next guy will will bring bring to bear,

(08:40):
and for some cities it's the all right, who's the
next guy in line to be fired? Versus do we
actually have an opportunity to sell hope and we turn
our attention to the city of Cleveland. We talked about
them a lot from the quarterbacking position. But today Jimmy
haslm the Haslam's got in front of the microphone answering
a ton of questions. You've got the quarterback issue, You've

(09:03):
got Judkins unsigned and going, the number of domestic violence
issues going on in Cleveland that they've had over the
course of the year. So that is swirling just so
many different pieces. But let's hear from from Jimmy Haslam
on the quarterback situation.

Speaker 7 (09:20):
We have good process, okay. And if you'd have told
me Friday night driving home you all to go to
pic Shador, I would say that that's not happening. But
we had a conversation early that morning, and then we
had a conversation later that day. I think we had
the right people involved in the conversation. At the end
of the day. That's Andrew Berry's call. Andrew made the
call to pic Sudor.

Speaker 4 (09:40):
I love that because he has now put Andrew Berry
front and center in the crossfire. I was waiting from
decides wiping by just saying it was also him that
wanted Deshaun Watson, so you know, strike two. If this
goes bad, it's over there because it was all a
speculation that the owner stepped in and said, hey, go

(10:01):
get the name right, go get us aheadline, go do this.
And he's doing everything he can now as we've had
day to day and it's something we talked about a
little bit yesterday. But the show's always evolving, changing the
audience as well. For those that missed it, Chador and
everybody else, you got your highs, you got your lows.
We've had guys in Chicago they've been thrown off the
field for not running the right route, not knowing the

(10:24):
play calls, etc. We've seen it across the NFL. You
get so many storylines going through, so you know, you
ride the lightning in terms of deciding and deciphering what's
real from imagine rich but that's certainly been the case
for Shador Sanders. I just thought it was interesting that
it wasn't you know, as much as you would at

(10:45):
least take some credit of Hey, it was a collective No,
that's all Andrew. So all questions directed to every errant
throw or failure in this regard, I don't want it.
I don't want you to barking up my tree with
this one.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
Yeah, and heavy as the head that wears the crown.

Speaker 6 (11:02):
If you are lucky enough to get one of these
thirty two jobs in the NFL, where whether we're talking
about a head coach or a general manager job, or
president of pro player personnel or president of college personnel,
like one of these roles where you are in charge
of a massive part of either team building or team coaching,

(11:27):
you have inherited an unfortunate amount of responsibility from an
owner who doesn't often want to be in the spotlight.
We're just talking about how it's actually good for the
health of the league, how many coaches are known commodities,
and how fan bases will trade on those commodities. As

(11:48):
much as their hopes rely on star quarterbacks, they oftentimes
and do rely on star coaches. And so if you're
one of these lucky personnel managers or coaches as mentioned, yeah,
I mean, you can become rich, and you can become

(12:08):
famous if that's what you're chasing.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
You can be heralded and sought after.

Speaker 6 (12:13):
But also, I mean, we know exactly where everything rolls,
and that's downhill and nobody's at the top of the
hill more than the owner of an organization, and.

Speaker 5 (12:23):
He will let it roll wherever he wants.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
So, yeah, you're gonna be paid a king's ransom, but
you're also going to be left holding the bag if
things don't work out.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
And I mean it's it's kind of the old mel
Brooks line.

Speaker 6 (12:39):
It's good to be the king, you know. I mean,
it is good to be the owner of one of
these two NFL franchises because you get to shrug off
the responsibility wherever you want to.

Speaker 5 (12:50):
Owners like Jerry Jones, Mike you know it. I know it.
He wants all the smoke.

Speaker 6 (12:55):
He doesn't care if he's responsible or his coach is responsible.
He just wants people talking about the Dallas calbal Well,
that's right. Owners like Jimmy Haslin, they're they're not built
that way. They don't want the smoke like that.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
Well, it's it with Jerry Jones, it's the I still
get to cash the checks. Say what you want. You
can't get rid of me. You can't force me out,
of course, as long as you don't go down. You know,
the list of guys like we have seen extricated from
their their lofty purchase as team owners in the different sports.
But the other thing Haslam had to address because his

(13:27):
name has been circulated quite a bit with another quarterback
who may or may not find his way to the
NFL in short order. You know, the guy who's already
been deified with very few snaps at the collegiate level.
I know you guys cover it a bit on countdown.
We'll do it here. Here's Haslam talking about a certain
quarterback at the collegiate levels.

Speaker 7 (13:49):
Well, Tony, you know, you're in the business and you
get paid by how many hits you get, you, okay,
And I think if you know the Manning family, I
would bet that, and I don't know ours at all.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Okay. I bet he stays in college two years. So
that's certain.

Speaker 8 (13:59):
Fat You think that's we're discussing himself.

Speaker 4 (14:01):
I'm not even gonna discuss it. Beat it with your
arch Manning because everybody's connected the dots, because he knows
the family. He knows Grandpa, and he knows you know,
the dad and uncles and everything else. That they were
starting to line it up because, as we've talked about, Cleveland,
one of those teams on the low end of your
expected over underwin totals depending on which source you're looking

(14:24):
at four and a half, five, maybe five and a
half with a group of other teams, but just dismissing
it categorically because you've seen four years from both the
Eli and Peyton, but also for Arch, we have no idea.
Yeah right, I mean the expectations are he's going to
be great, right, Kupper was supposed to be the great athlete.
Well he wasn't a quarterback.

Speaker 6 (14:44):
Now, I think it's uh, I think it's actually really
think about how disheartening it is for Browns fan to
have headlines like this swirling before the season even kicks off.
Sure like your team may be so bad on paper,
or at very least one of the teams that could

(15:04):
be even speculated to lose enough games. We're talking about
winning less than a handful of games to be in
the sweepstakes for a super talent like Arch Manning, who,
by the way, we also don't even know if we'll
be available in this next year's draft.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
Here's the one.

Speaker 6 (15:20):
Here's one caveat that I want to throw into the
mix here that not enough people are talking about, are
thinking about. Did this work for the Chargers? When they
drafted Eli. No, No, it did not. Eli wasn't going
to go to just any team. He was going to
go to the right team, and it ended up netting him.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
Too super bowls, two super Bowl victories.

Speaker 6 (15:46):
By the way, I think it would be very foolhardy
for any team, especially one with as as abysmal luck
as the Browns have had at the quarterback position, to
tell Bank on purpose for a Manning, because I don't
think Arch Manning would be going to.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Cleveland anyway, just based on a track record alone.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
No, I think you're one hundred percent right. I mean,
especially in a day and age. I mean, Eli did
it so many years ago. He still gets criticized somehow.
John Elway still gets Scott off, Scott free in most
conversations about what he did because he had the baseball
leverage to it all at the time. But when we
look at it in an age where players are empowered
and archers made a lot of money from Nil and

(16:33):
he will continue to make a lot of money in
this system, that yeah, he can afford to to force
the issue and sit and wait for the opportunity, whether
that's New Orleans who may be equally bad or somebody
else as the situation dictates, but we'll keep an eye
on that as we flow. He's Rich Hornberger in for

(16:55):
Jason Smith on Mike Carmon as we're just getting warmed
up here Fox Sports Radio coming up next, Well, we
go to the other owner because he put his PT
Barnum hat on and said, this is the greatest show.
Never mind with that HASLM guys staying over there. You
know exactly who I'm talking about. We'll do that next.
For over forty years, Tyrack's been helping customers find the
right tires for how, what and where they drive. Shipass

(17:16):
and free back by free road hazard protection with convenient
installation options like mobile tire installation. That's right, don't bring
the tires to you tire rack dot Com the Wait
Tire Buying.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with
Me Mike Harmon. No Jason Smith tonight. Maybe we've staged
a coup. Maybe it's time all right, check in on
Matt how about a Fresco. See how he's doing. Find
me over at Swollen Dome, find Rich at Ornberger. We
appreciate you being with us, giving us a few minutes

(17:59):
of your time if you're heading out and about maybe
walking the dog, going for a walk ahead of the
tsunami watch here in southern California. I mean you take
us with you on the iHeartRadio app wherever you go,
twenty four hours a day of the greatness of everything
we do the oral presentation here on Fox Sports Radio
and Rich, you know, we had the Jimmy Haslam that

(18:20):
we started the show with and he had to address
a number of issues. We had the arch man and
talking about the drafting of Shador Sanders standing there and
basically pointing at his GM blame him if this goes south,
as it were. And then we got Jerry Jones who
continues to squabble with star players and we know it's
part of the great theatrics before finally inking someone on

(18:44):
the bottom line. But you know, he decided to poke
the bear once again today going after Michaeh Parsons saying
the chance for the team to pay Micah Parsons are
quote a faint little sound. I heard it light, but
not compared to how I heard him say pay Lamb
last year. That was a faint little sound compared to

(19:06):
the way we're hollering last year, pay Lamb. Whoever's not
in you can count on a few hollering that. But
it was a big loud chant last year on Lamb.
Can't help himself, man.

Speaker 5 (19:18):
He can't. And and here's the thing. He's not wrong.

Speaker 6 (19:23):
He's not wrong, and he's not wrong for so many reasons.
I mean, specifically, if there's one reason why, I mean,
are we really I'm talking very generalized football fans in
general rooting.

Speaker 5 (19:38):
For pass rushers. No, not really.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
I do in my tap or pass system, depending on
how you want to do it. Rich because I'm a nerd,
I mean a thrower, an attacker, and a protector. You
can add everything else.

Speaker 5 (19:51):
You are one hundred percent a nerd, and I love
you for it. But there's so many people who watch
football who aren't.

Speaker 6 (19:58):
Like I mean, I seriously enjoy that analytical part of
the game as much as I do the brutality and
the entertainment value. But Jerry Jones is trying to sell sweets.
Jerry Jones is trying to sell popped corn. Jerry Jones
is trying to create a circus, and he is wearing
the tall hat, and he's standing next to the lion
tamer and he's standing next to the trapeze artist, and

(20:20):
they're about to start the show, and they're missing something,
and they're missing something, and he's thinking to himself like, well, geez,
I mean, can we really have a circus, a true
circus without the elephant?

Speaker 5 (20:34):
Yeah? We probably could for a few shows. So if this.

Speaker 6 (20:37):
Micah Parsons and I mean, and I'm not calling Micah
an elephant for any other reason but because it just
fits the metaphor. But for a couple of shows, even
if Micah held out through training camp, say that if
it got bad, or if he held out a couple
of games during the regular season, would the team miss
him absolutely? Would the team be affected big time by

(20:59):
Micah Parson not being there? The answer is sure, yes, obviously.
But would fans be as upset with Jerry Jones as
they would be if he forced a situation like that
with Seeedee Lamb. The answer is no, no, because he's
not as big of box office as one of the
leading receivers in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (21:19):
And so he's not wrong. Now is he wrong for
saying it?

Speaker 6 (21:22):
Yes, Like so many things that Jerry Jones says publicly,
sometimes these are indoor conversations.

Speaker 5 (21:29):
You don't need to be having them on the front porch.
But he can't help himself, Mike.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
No, and that's the end game, all right. Sexiness and
Micah Parson's fantastic defender. You see the big plays and
they are numerous through the years, no question about it.
But to your point, you paid Dak top of market.
Remember he got sideswiped by Jerry. What was it about
a week ago with some comments of hey we paid

(21:54):
that guy and then he wasn't available. I mean, what
do you want me to do? That was when he
and Mike Brown were in a little wild with their
comments and being called the task for all right, now
you're going into worst case scenarios on all your players
of what could happen. Jerry took the more tried and
true approach of guys could get hurt. Mike Brown got
in trouble with some because he suggested, hey, they're unavailable

(22:16):
because they're acting out of sorts and finding themselves in
legal trouble. Either way, same thing, the idea that your
star players are unavailable to you. But for Jerry, I
mean it's part of the side show and he's right
and you're absolutely right about it too, is that, you know,
the offensive side of the ball gets so much more
talk about the fantasy football stuff that I'm starting to

(22:39):
be asked to do. Nobody's asking me for IDP advice. No, right,
where we're trying to determine. And it's always funny to
me because tackles are not an official stat so you
get a little bit of home cooking from the statistician.
All right, ray Lewis, Brian Urlac or Luke Keigley, all
those guys. You go back and watch the tapes, it's

(22:59):
kind of like try to do and sort out you know,
Nick right. One of his main tasks, it seems, in
addition to hosting his show, is going through old Michael
Jordan film and having people do it to try to
tear away some of the myth. It's the same thing
you can do with a lot of linebackers. What was
he actually in on the tackle? No, but he touched
the guy's leg as they was getting.

Speaker 5 (23:19):
Off the pile.

Speaker 4 (23:20):
Give him a half a tackle and move on. But
you know that doesn't sell. Giant receiving totals, touchdown catches,
toe taps, and your quarterback having brilliant statistics gets the
day done. And that's that's the thing, right. You don't
get a lot of headlines a lot of success with
a great defense. But we've certainly not seen Jerry necessarily

(23:41):
invest wisely on that side of the ball for a
long long time.

Speaker 5 (23:45):
Yeah, yeah, listen.

Speaker 6 (23:46):
I mean, look, there's no doubt that from a defensive
prowess standpoint, Mike and I were not saying for a
second that Micah Parsons is in a dominating corner stone
of a Dallas defense or a guy who analytically hasn't
impressed literally everyone who.

Speaker 5 (24:07):
Pays attention to football.

Speaker 6 (24:09):
I mean, PFF Pro Football Focus routinely has him in
the nineties out of one hundred percent grade on his
impact on the field, which is an absurdly high measurement.
He's amassed a tremendous amount of sacks in his young career.
We know how important that statistic is in football, because
if you're harassing or taking down the quarterback, you are

(24:32):
affecting the game horribly horridly for an opposing offense. And
then from a team leadership standpoint and a morale standpoint,
I mean he is also one of the leading voices
in that locker room. Players feel more secure when their
star players are on the field with them, so that
means the whole of the defense is.

Speaker 5 (24:51):
Going to be playing better.

Speaker 6 (24:53):
Doesn't matter how far divorced from the position of pass
rusher or edge rusher. The position I'm talking about is
it could be the opposite cornerback. It could be the
deep safety playing cover three, you know, over the middle
of the field.

Speaker 5 (25:06):
It could be the.

Speaker 6 (25:07):
Linebacker who has, you know, a short coverage responsibility or
filling a gap in the run. When you have Micah
Parsons on the field, you're more comfortable playing your position
because you know you have an absolute star and potentially
future Hall of Famer on the field with you. That
all impacts everything, not just Jerry and Micah and their

(25:34):
two pocketbooks. Like this is going to have a resounding
effect on the rest of this roster, and then.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
It doesn't just affect the defense offensively too.

Speaker 6 (25:42):
When you know your defense is going to get you
the ball back or you're in a tight game, and
all it comes down to potentially is one force fumble,
one strip sack, one big play to knock a team out.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
Of field goal range.

Speaker 6 (25:56):
Those are the plays that Micah Parsons seems to generate
in the clutch. So even from an offensive standpoint, he
can turn a game around for you because he can
get you more opportunities throughout the season to do your job. So, yeah,
this isn't just a Jerry Micah situation. This is a
team altering decision and negotiation obviously. And if you're asking

(26:20):
for my best guess, my best guess is it gets
hammered out pretty soon here.

Speaker 4 (26:25):
Yeah, coming towards the end of the run, right, we
start getting into preseason games and before long we're in
that first weekend of the NFL season where we know
all bets are off at that point. In terms of
these negotiations. Tyler Giton, we talked about him yesterday, didn't
Tearra's acl has the leg injury though that we'll keep

(26:46):
him out four to six weeks at a minimum. Kyln Carson,
their cornerback hyper extended knee that happened over the weekend.
They're saying it's going to be four to six weeks
for him as well. So you've got that. Here's a
quote from Ceedeelamb. This goes back to some of the
conversation from last week rich as Jerry went after his

(27:06):
surprize guys dak and for Micah quote, playing this media
game with Jerry's not the best. It's not fun and
it's not recommended. Micah knows what he brings to the table.
He should get what he deserves. I'm not indulging it
in any of the craziness they got going, but I
do want mikel to get paid and soon. Yeah, look
at that the voice of reason. Of course, he's sitting

(27:27):
on a giant fat stack. Is like Hugh from Breaking Bad,
Remember that episode when he was laying down on the
pile of money like it was a bed. That's kind
of CD as he's talking this one out.

Speaker 6 (27:38):
Yeah, I mean when when you when you are literally
taking this interview and if you have a sniffle, you're
wiping your nose with a with a Benjamin, you know
what I mean?

Speaker 5 (27:47):
It doesn't it. Of course he's rooting for Mike to
get his too.

Speaker 6 (27:52):
He's about to join a very elite club in the
NFL of guys who ink those you know really landmarks
or league shifting deals. I mean, Micah Parsons potentially could
end up being the highest paid defensive player in the
history of the NFL when all is said and done.
And for anybody who's thinking, well, I mean, there's salary

(28:14):
caps and there's restrictions that the Dallas Cowboys have to follow,
and how could they break him off after they broke
off Stevie Lamb. Trust me when I tell you, anytime
you hear an owner claim poverty and I'm not even
saying that Jerry Jones is claiming that in this case,
or anytime you hear an owner who's saying yeah, I mean, well, listen,
you know the cap is tied and we're trying to

(28:36):
work on the numbers, and obviously there's a lot of.

Speaker 5 (28:39):
Mouths to feed and stuff like that.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
Where there is a will, there is always a way,
And those, my friends, are what I call excuses, and
they're convenient ones, because there is always a way to
part with a little bit more money to keep a
player in house as long as you really want them.
It just comes down to how bad does Jerry want him,

(29:01):
and how much of this is negotiation tactic and how
much of this is just bluster because he likes again,
he likes the hype.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
Yeah, and if nothing else, we do always get the
Green Bay Packers notes, and we got it last week.
They got four hundred and thirty two million dollars from
national revenue salary cap is two hundred and seventy nine million.
That leaves you a one hundred and fifty three million dollars
of profit or a revenue minus whatever your operating expenses are.

(29:31):
So and that's not including local deals, endorsements, partnerships around
your stadium ticket sales that you get to keep etctera.
So you know, just a little food for thought there
as you talk about NFL teams and what they can
and cannot part with. Hey, your next success could begin
sooner than you think. And University of Maryland Global Campus

(29:53):

lot with Ryan Sandberg passing away on the heels of
Ozzy Osbourne and hul Kogan some a little Mikey has
kind of gone. So I'm gonna go back to where
my kids were and their hotel Transylvania Love. So that's
what I'm doing. Steve Desager, that was a while ago.
By the way, you talked about the Packers.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
Their pure profit from operations this past year was over
eighty million dollars.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
See there he goes, Wow, there you go, he just
spiked a football. You didn't see it rich of course.

Speaker 3 (30:44):
You know they did have an extra home game, So
I guess that's why it's more than the sixty million
dollars of pure profit at the.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
Well for a White Sox fan. Let's just get it
out of the way, I get it.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
Andrew Vaughan is a pretty good hitter with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
Seems to have figured things out us did. Let's put
it in perspective. Is Milwaukee won again tonight, beating the Cubs.
No less.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
Andrew vaugh with the White Sox this year batted one
eighty nine about two hundred plate appearances. He has about
fifty plate appearances as a Milwaukee Brewer, he had five
homers then, He already has five homers with his new team,
already has more RBIs than all his time with the
White Sox earlier this year, and he's batting three seventy

(31:29):
five with Milwaukee. He had six rbys against the Cubs tonight,
including a grand slam Milwaukee and nine three winners. That
means the Cubs are now two games back of the
first place Brewers in the NL Central. Jackson Churio Milwaukee

Speaker 6 (36:31):
Ever, had yeah no question. About it impressive impressive stat.
Right there, you know there are certain bats that just
sound different when they hit a, home Run and schwarber's
absolutely has one.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
Of THOSE and i don't know how to.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
Describe it maybe it's, the grip maybe it's, the wood
MAYBE it's i, don't know the, contact point the sweet spot,
for him but there's. No Question and i've seen a
Lot of, phillies baseball Especially in september when the, games
matter and he's he's been pretty clutch. For them it's
it's he's a pretty substantial power hitter in that lineup

(37:06):
and has done great things since He's, left chicago.

Speaker 8 (37:09):
No.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
Question yeah we certainly celebrated his heroics At The All,
star game and you know watch him as one of. Those,
Guys look philly has several of them in, their history
one of which became an eventual well one of. THE
monikers i Had baby BOWL where i kind of Looked Like.
Greg luzinski go back and look at the size of the, man's,
tree trunk legs and. Copious ass he was the bull

(37:33):
on the roof for years and as a little ballplayer
BACK when i was eleven twelve. Years, old yeah might
have resembled a little Bit Of, greg luzinski including the
big glasses that my mom had me wearing at. The time,
all right now A story i want to start here
and we'll carry it over into the. Next Hour. Rich is,
you know we're looking Across The National. Football league we're.

(37:54):
Celebrating youth we'll do a little bit on that. Later
on we Talk About. Micah parsons you mentioned some of
the the analytics and where. He ranks, You know madden
only gave him a. Ninety eight who got the. Ninety
nine's we'll talk about. That later but Out in pittsburgh
where they they. Know, something oh they've got A future
Hall of fame quarterback in the Waiting In. Ben roethlisberger

(38:15):
but now you have one who shows Up In. Aaron
Rodgers And jerry dulax been. There forever he did an
appearance on one oh two POINT FIVE wv dveu, and,
said quote he's the greatest thrower of The football i've,
ever seen even at, forty one that flick of the
wrist and the ball, comes out it's moving and it's something.

(38:36):
To see is he trying to get access or has
he got something here based on, you know what you've
seen around the game in, Your.

Speaker 5 (38:43):
YEARS rich, i mean it's it's difficult.

Speaker 6 (38:47):
TO say i will, say this there is there's definitely
something different when somebody knows how to spin it and and.

Speaker 5 (38:55):
And that is what.

Speaker 6 (38:56):
It is it feels like something extra happens at the.
Release point that's hard, to describe whether you know it
is a flick of the wrist or if it's, YOU
know i, don't know long tendrils for fingers that seem
to just put a.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
Little bit extra whip on.

Speaker 6 (39:11):
The ball but there are guys around the game who
obviously have had success at that position who give you,
those feelings, you know the damn renos of the world
or the, YOU know i guess a more modern example
of that would be Like A josh allen who's retooled
his throwing motion to make it a little bit. More,

(39:34):
explosive still it just feels like the ball just explodes off.

Speaker 5 (39:38):
Their hand it.

Speaker 4 (39:39):
Really, does yeah it's fun fun to watch him in
as we watch this next iteration Of What aaron rodgers
has had a fantastic back end of the twenty twenty,
four season as he had one of his, Old Friends,
DeVante adams running about with Him And, garrett wilson who
just got, a nice big fat contract From The New York.
Football jets we'll continue with this because we're going to

Hall of fame induction and all, the speeches and we'll
eventually get to the. Trade deadline how you, Doing today

(42:02):
my friend.

Speaker 8 (42:03):
Doing great Mike. And rich one of my favorite weeks of.
The year cooper's down over the weekend and then of
course the trade deadline. Coming up each hero's speech is
one that we're going to. Remember Forever And dave parker the.
SECOND too i thought his speech was especially poignant in
honor of, his father the rhymes at, the end the

(42:26):
back and forth with his words and his. Father's words
just an extraordinary day of speeches in a great weekend
all the way around There in. Cooper sown, of course
heavy hearts for the whole baseball world on the Passing Of,
ryan samberg a legend of, the game a, true gentleman
SOMEONE whom i had the great pleasure to meet and
to speak with on. Numerous occasions so for all of

(42:47):
us that have had a chance To Meet ryan samberg
and all of us has watched, HIM play i know
right now was certainly heavy hearts all across the.

Speaker 4 (42:54):
Sports, world well and, that's it right tweet, you had,
you know Talking With, wade BOGGS and i saw this
echoed with a Number of hall. Of Famers andre dawson
was delivering a little bit of a speech At The
National Sports collector's convention going On, in rosemond out there Outside,
of chicago and had to pause a couple of times
as he, was recounting you Know What ryan sandberg meant

(43:15):
to him as a teammate and his eventual Enshrinement, in
cooperstown and just so many not a dry eye thinking.
About it and me as a Little southside, CHICAGO boy
i Hated, the cubs STILL, do Jp but samberg was
one of those guys you marveled at he.

Speaker 8 (43:32):
Did and, and honestly we saw a Statement From president
obama that echoes the. Same thing he of course A white,
sox fan and he shared in the solidarity for the
City of chicago in the morning of. A legend and,
You're Right, RYAN samberg i was actually just got a
text business from my brother today and the same statement

(43:53):
he made that we of course grew Up, in michigan
But the cubs Were His national league team growing up
Because of Sam and Dawson, And grace and that was
not a unique statement to, my brother certainly because of
the appeal Nationally of SANDBERG. On wgn, of Course the
braves are PLAYING on tbs. The time and this just

(44:14):
kind of takes you back to the foundational elements of
a lot of us as, baseball fans what drew us to.
The game it's that everyday consistency and the chances, for
Brilliance and sandberg. Represented both he represented the steadiness at,
that position the flawless defense for so, many years and
then the spectacular the two home runs Off And brewce

(44:36):
souiter and the way in which he became quickly an
icon of the game and someone Who and i'm glad
you referenced the STORY that i Shared About wade BOX
because i Was. Interviewing bogs we had about an, Hour
together WADE, and i and we talked about his career
and the ups and downs of, his life, his career and,

(44:58):
most importantly we talked about friends and those that have.
Supported him and when he Talked About, ryan samberg he
got very choked up and it was hard for him,
to speak and he looked to the sky, and said
take take care of, My, friend lord because, he knew
he knew how imminently this was likely going, to happen
that Conversation, with saturday and here we are just a

(45:18):
couple of, days later so with heavy hearts and certainly
on the minds of everybody that Was in cooperstown this.

Speaker 6 (45:24):
Weekend too, man yeah said said moment there For Major league,
baseball fans but as you mentioned fans definitely looking forward
to the. TRADE deadline i would say for a Lot
Of Major league, baseball cities there are a couple that
are going to be more in the seller's seat instead

(45:46):
of the, buyer's Seat.

Speaker 5 (45:47):
The white sox being one. Of Them the orioles.

Speaker 6 (45:49):
Potentially looking to deal, position players and you specifically mentioned
in A tweet i think this went out about forty, Minutes,
ago john That the padres are looking To Deal, dylan
cees but a rental starter wouldn't fit For The white Sox.
The orioles so how would a deal get done And

(46:11):
the padres get a backstop or a position player that
they so.

Speaker 8 (46:15):
Sorely, need well it's a, great question and here's Basically
what i've been told in the last day or so That.
THE padres i think it's important to understand the context
Of Why dylan sees his name has been, out there
And why Robert swat as his name has been. Out
there it's not that they're just trying to punt on.

(46:37):
The season they're trying to deal within. A budget i
think their budget is not quite as flexible as it
would have been a couple of years ago when they
were very aggressive in making, some signings and so they
have to stay within. The budget and if you're going
to be able to add a left Fielder Like ramon loreano,
for Example Or Luis robert junior is, another case Or Perhaps,

(47:01):
stephen kwan the idea would be that. You trade you Would,
trade cease, let's say to a team that needs a
starting pitcher, right now Perhaps The, chicago cubs, for example
and Then the cubs would give you one of, their
Prospects Maybe kevin alcantra or others that are in the
minor leagues there, right now and then you would take that,

(47:24):
prospect again let's Say, it's alcantra and then you would
move that player Along to Baltimore, for loreano To The
white Sox For Luis. Robert jr that's why you would
involve that third team to facilitate a trade. Like this
And Certainly, aj Preller the padres president of, baseball operations

(47:44):
he's always been. Very imaginative he's not afraid to do uniquely,
structured deals and so in a lot Of ways rich
as you know from Following the podres carefully they're In
The san diego market that, they are they're always interested
in making. Creative TRADES and i Think that aj is
buying and selling right now for a very, specific reason

(48:04):
which is that he has to maintain. The budget and
you're almost thinking about this like HOW an nba team
thinks about, a trade where at the deadline IN the
nba is both do you know better? Than me you
sometimes get, contracts in contracts out because of, the cap
and so you have to be. Very creative it's that
same kind of a concept, right now except we just
have to do With the padres having a more fixed

(48:26):
payroll number than typically they have in.

Speaker 4 (48:29):
Recent years got to make all those numbers match up IN,
the nba which is. Always fun and then you get
your apron rules and. WHATEVER else jp all the minutia
the inside baseball that we applied liberally to every. Other
Sport John palmer rossi our Guest To jason smittchell, With Me,
mike Carmen rich ornberger In For. Jason SMITH obviously i
reside Here In. Los angeles tough day at the Plate

(48:51):
For Sho, hao tani but you've seen him back on,
the mound so it's one extra chip in the, arms
race as. It were they have a call up to.
The lineup but what do we expect from the From
the dodgers here as we get to, The Deadline dustin may.
And others is it holding pat and just waiting for

(49:12):
the for the cavalry to.

Speaker 8 (49:13):
COME back i don't think they're going, To. Wait mike
They are they are not the kind of team, that
waits AND so i think that they will. Be aggressive
the focus more than likely will be the bullpen, THEY
need i think to address that part of. Their club
may going out could be part of the thought process

(49:34):
if if he maybe ends up allowing them to to
get more of a true. RELIEF pitcher I think may is, someone,
who yeah he's he's had some success in the starting
pitcher in, this league but by and large he's not
been able to be in every fifth day consistent. Starting
pitcher and this team right now they need to figure
out who their rotation is going to be going down. The.

(49:57):
Stretch now you might do that by either potentially bring
in someone that's a that's a high end, starting pitcher
or you do it by by perhaps protecting those starters
by building out your bullpen and handling the game from
the back. End FORWARD and i think that's probably the
more expedient way to do things and the way in

(50:17):
Which the dodgers are more than likely. To proceed so
a lot of those names you've, Been Hearing ryan helsley Of,
The Cardinals peter fairbanks Of, The Rays johann duran Of The,
Minnesota Twins harrison bader could potentially be a fit For
the dodgers if there's a if there's a bigger deal
there With The, minnesota twins and you think About maybe

(50:37):
Beata and duran being together in the. Same deal so,
right now the name of the game For the dodgers
is going to be pitching and certainly Hoping That mookie
betts has A more mooky like conclusion of the season
than what he's had to.

Speaker 5 (50:51):
This.

Speaker 8 (50:51):
Point.

Speaker 6 (50:53):
Yeah yeah let me ask you a more generalized question
heading into the second half of the, season here trade,
deadline looming are there teams or a team, in particular
that you've been impressed with through the first half that
maybe missing some of the, Finishing, work like, you know
if we're going to compare it to, a house, you

(51:14):
know the trim is, in on, you know all the windowsills.
Aren't perfect, you know there might be some molding that
still needs to, be attached but they are close to a,
finished product and you could see a great blossoming here
as we head down the home stretch of.

Speaker 5 (51:28):
The season i'll give, you two and.

Speaker 8 (51:31):
They're both In The, american League The seattle mariners And
The Boston. RED sox i Think the mariners they probably
want to add a little bit, more BULLPEN but i
like the foundation of. Their teams they were, able to in,
my view rich very adeptly manage the pitching injuries that
they incurred earlier. This Year logan gilbert was out for,

(51:52):
A While george kirby was out for. A while they
called up a young native of a great State. Of
michigan by, The Way logan evans's fish Wonderfully and i'm
not just highlighting him because It's, from michigan but he's
actually really he's a really. Good Pitcher so evans has
been a godsend, for them and they've Already Acquired. Josh
NAYLOR but i look at this team as maybe needing one,

(52:13):
more reliever potentially two. More relievers you can never have enough. Bullpen,
guys again the bullpen's the third of, your team so
you got to make sure that you fortify that part
before you begin the journey down. The STRETCH so i
look At the mariners as maybe being a move or
two away from being a very dangerous team down. The
stretch Now The Boston Red sox bregman is. Back healthy

(52:33):
they reformulated their team on the fly when They Traded.
Rothfield devers they're one of the best teams in baseball
since they made. That Trade roman anthony has been catalyzing
the lineup from. The, TOP again i mentioned Having a
bregman back in healthy is. REALLY important i think they
may need one. More arm and if they get one,
MORE arm i Like the BOSTON THAT soccl i like them.
A Lot The blue jays are in a really good

(52:57):
position to win, the DIVISION but i look At The
red sox as being poised to make a, nice run
maybe claim the first, wild card host a playoffs Series,
at fenway and be a team that no one wants
to face in the postseason Because In, GARRETT crochet i
think Rich The red sox have one of the true

(53:19):
aces in The Entire. American league scooble. Is, One obviously
crochet might be when you look at the field of
teams that actually make. The playoffs crochet is going to
be one of the top five starting pitchers in probably
either side of, the bracket Including The. National league he's really,
that GOOD and i look at him as being a true,
postseason eighth the kind of Guy The red sox have

(53:41):
not had in. A WHILE and i think it's going
to be a VERY very i gin it's gonna, be
very Very good october For The Boston. RED sox i
like the way that team, is BUILT and i would
love to see them Play.

Speaker 2 (53:51):
In october can't wait.

Speaker 4 (53:52):
To See garrett Croche And carlos rodin size it up
each other in the final stretches off for, a title,
you know and then As The white sox guy just point,
AND go i knew there. They are there they are
the only.

Speaker 8 (54:06):
The only better thing would be if If The red
sox acquire or even let's Say the Dodgers Acquire Luis.
Robert jr and he goes Off Like manny ramirez circa
two thousand. And eight that's that's also, a possibility which
you know what's. Gonna, happen LOOK and i wasn't even
gonna mention tonight In Former red, Sox exploits but did

(54:28):
you just see who Had A grand slam For The
milwaukee brewers.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
And that IN That nl yeah.

Speaker 8 (54:33):
Down, there yeah The Former white sox first baseman and
the Former Cow bear Andrew, vaugh.

Speaker 4 (54:40):
Yeah get him Out. Of chicago suddenly he remember not.
A hit all of that, To say, and look you
mentioned Your In. Seattle mariners it's a running bit on
the Show Of Predicting. Great Things julio rodriguez now hitting
for power. Once again the last thing FOR us jp
is that, you know with And With aaron judge HITTING,
the il cal rally is now your favorite to WIN.

(55:03):
At almbb.

Speaker 8 (55:05):
He is, AND listen i thought that Even before judge
went ON the il that there was a very real
Chance that ralli was going to win that. Award again,
right now it looks good For the mariners to make,
the playoffs and even if they, miss IT which i
don't think, they will it's going to be barely And
so raleigh would be the reason that his team is,

(55:26):
right there either in the playoffs or on the cusp.
Of it and he's working on what we could objectively
describe as the single, best offensive, power hitting plugging season
by a catcher in the history of, the game and
we just came Back, from cooperstown where you're very used

(55:48):
to saying things like this had never happened before the
first time ever it. Had happened and when you say
that about, a player typically that, Gets You As Mad
dog russ, would say some black type next to your
name in a big, time season that gets you. An
award and that's exactly the kind of year That cal
rally from the great State Of north carolina is working

(56:11):
on there For The.

Speaker 4 (56:13):
Seattle mariners he's A legend Hall of. Famer Himself It's
jean palmrosi, with us joins us each and EVERY Week
mlb network has been, with us the longtime friend of,
the Show a michigander loving his soccer and hockey talk.
As well but coming off of the high Of the
Hall of fame, INDUCTION, weekend jp thanks for. Stopping by
i'm sure we'll talk to you later on in the

(56:34):

A Reconstituted Major league baseball slate for the end of.
This season.

Speaker 8 (56:43):
Love it and by, the way just for the benefit of,
factual accuracy The only Hall of Fame that i'm in
is for The Ethics Nollhampton, public SCHOOLS which i am very,
proud of by, The way but that's the only hall
of Fame that, i'm in just so clear on that's.

Speaker 4 (56:57):

go hey it's kind of a big. Damn, Then look
i'm a very discerning kind, of guy you. KNOW me
i hate everybody. Except You At john morosi where you,
