Speaker 4 (00:52):
I'm a man, that's true and Mike Tomlin called him
a serial kill.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah yeah yeah, Paul, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Here's the thing, here's the thing, just really quick. Yeah,
I've seen that movie so many times in my life.
Midway through the fourth quarter, I knew how it was
gonna end. I knew when the Jets went for two
in the first half and didn't get it. I said,
they're gonna lose because of that. Cause again, I've seen
that Jets movie my entire life. The ending doesn't change,
doesn't change.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Though the first two acts were much better than what
you've seen, yes most years, at least the first time,
just like Hollywood movies, though they couldn't finish the third
act and give you the big payoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
No, I am, I am I look, I am just
I am embarrassed that they lost like that to Rogers
to make him because Rogers wasn't great. He looked a
little bit better than he was, but it was still
the best game he's played in two years. And Rogers
gets to come back in and win a game, and
I'm just embarrassed that that's how it turned out. Like
I'm like Aaron bled, I have no time for moral victories,
(01:48):
which is what's why I love Aaron Glen.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
I got no time for this.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
I got time for the mistakes and all of this
and fumbles and all kinds of crazy ass stuff. No,
I don't don't have time for that. I'm just I'm
embarrassed that they lost. And as soon as as soon
as we got to the fourth court said, this is
how this game is gonna end. This is exactly this game.
And I knew Buzzle was gonna make that sixty yard
field for sure. They needed to rush it more. I
get that they kind of hung back a bit like, No,
you can't let guys kick it from sixty anymore, not
(02:13):
gonna make him. You don't want to have a penalty
and move it closer. No, you gotta get after that,
because this is how kickers are, right, And it was
still the Jets kind.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Of yeah, we're gonna go halfway after it.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Everybody's playing super tow on an NFL. It all started
with Janakowski and it continues today, literally today.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
So we'll have more on the Jets. Yeah, Rogers, Rogers, Rogers.
But obviously we jump right in tonight as we do
every Monday Monday Night football. Eleven and a half to
go on the third quarter. It is a seventeen to
six lead for the Chicago Bears over the Minnesota Vikings.
This is a tale of two quarterbacks. Let's deal with
(02:51):
your guy first. Sure, Caleb Williams, who wait a minute,
but wait a minute. I thought he was so bad
and he couldn't. He couldn't hit the net with the
ball in training camp that day. I thought he was terrible.
I thought he was awful. I told you everything is
gonna be fine. I told you he was gonna have
a big year. Everything is fine. He's thirteen out of
nineteen so far. Tonight he's run for thirty yards in
(03:11):
a touchdown. I told you, I told everything. Caleb Williams
is gonna be fined. No, No, he's terrible. Look at
that thing with the net. It looks awful. He's gonna
be fine here he is. He's got a quarterback, friendly
head coach, and this is a pretty good Vikings team
and a pretty good Vikings defense. But Caleb Williams looks okay.
He's making the right decisions. Everything is going fine. Not
(03:33):
turn the ball over. It's been enough offense. It's the
first game.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
It's rusty. You don't have a lot going on in
the preseason. But Caleb Williams looks fine. Apparently after Maybe
it's got to do is miss nets in practice all
the time in the preseason. He was gonna be fine
here he is all right. I know everybody was so nervous,
But now don't you feel good?
Speaker 4 (03:50):
I told you he was gonna be I just chuckle, right,
And then right ahead of the season beginning, we get
the big story that dropped and a guy getting a
lot of run because he talked to some fire weird
ex coaches that are salty and want to put all
blame on Caleb Williams. He was a loof. He didn't
want to do in meetings. They asked him questions and
he just stared him down and all of that fun stuff.
(04:11):
Ben Johnson's like, I don't know what happened last year,
and every chance he gets an opportunity, he's like, I've
been here. I only know what's going on now and
how hard he's working. So somewhere in there the truth lies.
And today there's been a couple of opportunities where it
looked like Williams may have had shots downfield but checked
down but got the ball out, made the completion, not
(04:32):
taking the sacks, as opposed to a year ago where
it was hey, I'm still the fastest guy out here.
I can outrun and evade would be tacklers. No, that
didn't happen, and he took a lot of sacks. Yeah,
I gave him an interceptionless streak. But holding the ball
doesn't do you much good, you know, playing behind the
sticks today, getting the ball out. You see the completions
(04:53):
early and often, and for Ben Johnson, it's exactly what
he wants. Don't take the negative plays, keep things pushing
and keep that Flores defense at bay. And that's what
they've been able to do. Not running the ball effectively
with Swift, but he's been good as a receiver out
of the backfield. And Caleb making plays with his legs himself,
including that touchdown scamper, so all good things. The aggressiveness
(05:16):
on fourth down to a shoe taking points in the
first half is one of those that you raise the eyebrow,
but evidently that's the identity that's gonna carry over from
their time in Detroit. So you move forward, you get
the pick six, and here we are.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Everything is fine.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Listen, listen, listen to the beginning of a new year
for Caleb Williams and the touchdown that really sparked all
a change in the conversation about the Bears quarterback haf back.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
Pressure pick it up by Tony Rolling left, Williams Scott
green Grass.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Turn bat bad for the inside, throw him up, will
you Babby touchdown? Touchdown? Bears hey yard touchdown?
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Scrabble Bears Radio Network on the call, See, you were nervous,
nervous about me saying all these good things, and you said, oh,
you're telling me are a good feeling everything.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I told you everything was gonna be fun. Well, I
did it in a mocking tone for the way it
got covered nationally.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
If the NFL was about throwing the ball into a
small basket in preseason, Caleb Williams would not be a quarterback.
I would recommend.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Well, I tell you you know, for today.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
I mean there were a couple of the throws as
I mentioned that, he would have had to put it
in those little windows, and he chose the check down.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yeah, he's not been grant. I'd say he's not been great,
but he's been fine. He has moved the team, he's
not made mistakes. He looks, he looks confident back there
in the pocket. It's not like the last six games
last year or was three steps back going oh my god,
here comes a rush.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
He his his body language is a lot better during
the plays, in between plays that Williams is fine.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah, I'm not I'm not worried about it. It's a long,
long process.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
As we've talked about, it's ay, but I'm I'm the
pragmatist in a world of hot take nonsense, right because
right now in Minnesota, I'm sure people are burning up
their keyboards with what they've seen from JJ McCarthy. We'll
get to him in a second. But for Caleb Williams,
right the referendum, especially with that story dropping this weekend
and all of the you know, different iterations and back
(07:17):
trying to back up as to what a train wreck
he was a year ago, and taking no responsibility as
a coaching staff that if he didn't play well today,
you add fuel to the fire, because both locally and nationally,
the wolves are at the door. For Caleb Williams, I
don't know what it translates to a win loss record,
but we know it's a process. Right He's back under center,
(07:38):
trying to do play action passes.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
He's never done that before.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
So to think that you're gonna go week one against
Brian Flores in this Minnesota defense, no, Harrison Smith, fine,
but that you're gonna go and you're gonna play perfect football. No,
you're you're not going to it's gonna be choppy at
times and over the next couple of weeks, I would
expect that as well. But if he and Ben Johnson
had the relationship that they both seem to be selling us,
(08:03):
then over time, by mid season, you'll see a much
different Chicago offense that will operate at a different level
of efficiency.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
So that's Caleb Williams. Everything is fine. Now how about
the other guy? Watch the snap, gets it full house
plus throwing.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Out to the lefit pickoff down the sideline right to.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
The forty yard line.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
He is history baby, leaving the Vikings that tail rights
into the end zone for the touchdown.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Touchdown Bears had a pick six per Nation right.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
There was Bears Radio Network again JJ McCarthy tonight. Five
out of nine for forty eight yards and a pick.
These are up to date stats.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
This is not half hit.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Refresh on my computer, no, no, no, long done of
those five out of nine for forty eight yards and
a pick. Now, you pick the school of thought that
you want to go through, because no matter how you
cut this up right, I'll give you the sunny side
up part of it, right, which is not the part
I believe side part is, and he does. He looks
like a guy that hasn't played football in a while, right,
I mean because because remember, this is not a guy
(09:06):
coming out of college that hey to give him the
keys to the offense. He has not played a game
in well over a year, right, You're you're talking about
a long time, nearly almost two years. You're talking about
a game from So it's been a long time since
he's been under centered yues. He's had time preseason joint practices.
But it's different when the lights go on on Monday
night and it's your first time throwing the football and
(09:26):
you're doing it when everything is real. So there is that,
because there is some of that for JJ McCarthy, and
I see that sometimes in a little bit of his
his you know, the way his eyes are moving and
looking across the field. But the more apt thing to
say is you sure you got the right guy? You
sure you got the right guy? Because it's not like
JJ McCarthy came into the NFL as a can't miss guy.
(09:49):
And this is where we talked about how the decision
making process of the Vikings can go doubly bad if
McCarthy's not good. Because mccarth Look, I told you from
the beginning, McCarthy is someone who was overdrafted. He was
never asked to win games at Michigan.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Right.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
I told you nobody's watched more Michigan games less thirty years.
And I'm unless you coach the team, and even then
you're out because you're not coaching for thirty years. Right,
McCarthy was never asked to be the guy. He was
asked to be the head of the Snake and Michigan
with a loaded team to win the National Championship. You
see all the guys that went to the NFL the
last couple of years. McCarthy was a good college quarterback.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
But I can't tell you.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
One game where I say Michigan won because of him.
And you can only try to try to make it
happen for a guy and say, oh, his skills will
transfer to the next level so much and so far tonight,
I've not seen it. Now again, it's two and a
half quarters of his first game. And there's That's why
I'm gonna say all the guy's terrible after this. But
(10:43):
understand that if this goes bad for the Vikings, it's
not just we got it wrong with a quarterback. It's
we had a guy and we said, no, we had
a guy who we were hoping JJ McCarthy would turn into.
We had a guy with thirty five touchdowns.
Speaker 6 (10:59):
And four thousand and we went thirteen and four last year,
and we said, yeah, you know, we have this other
guy though that hasn't thrown a pass for us that
we really like.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Yeah, but I just with thirty five touchdowns, four thousand yards. Yeah,
but the last two games kind of were in his go. Yeah,
but you saw the whole season was I'm a Pro
Bowl quarterback. Like three guys go from the conference, and
I was like a legit selection, like not one of those. Hey,
seven guys said they don't want to play. And I'm
a guy that I'm not Snoop Untley pro bowling it here,
(11:30):
I am legitimately pro bowling it. This is how it
gets so much worse. And you know, all Vikings fans
right now, that's all their thinking, right because it's a
Monday night. It's different when you suck Sunday afternoon at
one o'clock than we suck Monday night at eight thirty.
And suddenly it's all these guys, all these we could
have had, We could have had Sam Darnold again, we
could have gone back in with this and look at
(11:50):
where you're at right now. Okay, your leading receiver is
Jalen Naylor, who caught one pass at the end of
the first half. That's it, justin Jefferson. One pass on
three targets. This has been an abysmal start for the Vikings,
and again it's doubly worse because of the fact you
kick Sam Donald to the curb, which accelerates all the
negativity and all the bad things going around Minnesota with
(12:12):
this quarterback. So remember when he and the Vikings went
down in the playoffs. I raised my hand here you
were with me. To a degree of everybody wanted to
just put it on Sam Donald. Well that's the guy
that couldn't do this that the other and nobody wanted
to point a finger at Kevin O'Connell except for this guy.
In terms of game plan, down distance and how they
(12:33):
came into that game. How did you not figure out
what Ben Johnson has done? And I know Darisaw is
not there, he wasn't there last year?
Speaker 5 (12:42):
Is that?
Speaker 4 (12:43):
How did you not figure out a system whereby you
found some easy throws from early right Dennis Allen is
no slouch. Right, As much as we talk about Brian
Flora's from the defensive coordinator angle, Bears have done a
good job of getting pressure and getting him off his
spot and making him work a little bit. But you
didn't set up any easy throws getting Jefferson involved early, right,
(13:05):
you had? The pick six was a pass intended for Jefferson,
clearly miscommunication, right, he's expecting him to stop instead, he's
five yards up the field and it's an easy run
back for the touchdown, but putting it on his shoulders.
You don't have enough of a run game just yet.
Jordan Mason's had a couple of nice runs. Aaron Jones
(13:25):
is a decent receiver out of the backfield still, but
you haven't done anything to make it easy for him.
And with Sam Donald and those numbers from a year ago, Yeah,
I mean it's it's a much less vocal crowd than
what would happen in Chicago if the Bears came out
in Stone. But it still needs to be asked, right, right, guy,
(13:46):
how quickly things get get torn asunder and whether the
genius tag starts to come off O'Connell a little bit, Yeah,
I mean.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Look, it's it's always worse we do. We had a
who was a support position, and we had him, and
we found a way to convince ours let's not keep him.
Let's go with the guy that hasn't really thrown a
pass for us. No, no, he's our guy.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Like you think.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Sometimes we just really outthink ourselves. And again it's a
but JJ McCarthy, they have seventy seven yards of offense. Man,
this is midway through.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
The third quarter.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
All right, this is midway through the third quarter. Seventy
seven yards of all I mean, maybe the whole thing
is I'll get arch Manning. Can you image up the
number one pick next year and saying no, no, no,
we have JJ McCarthy. We'll let somebody else take arch Manning.
Now that would be interesting.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Now you're really creating chaos theory here after two and
a half quarters.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
I love that we're gonna draft Caleb Downs instead and
let the number two team go get arch Manning.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Right now, we're talking absolute chaos theory here. We're not
even through the third quarter here. But but it does
raise the interesting point of you know, look, I always
talk about the dollar cost average and give your quarterback position.
McCarthy's a cheap option year two of his rookie deals,
still coming off a big injury and trying to work
(14:58):
his way back, all reports positive, whatever, and you would
have had to pay Sam Darnold quite a bit of money,
right you saw what he was able to sign for
in Seattle. You didn't see much of that on the
field in week Ah.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
See what I did there.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
I tried to prop him up, and at the same
point I had to take a shot at him because
outside of JSN, I don't think we saw another receiver.
They were all, you know, invisible. Yeah, they were like
the void running around in uh you know that that
movie with Uh.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
He's like marble thing.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
He's like the lonely end from like you know, Army
in like nineteen forty six. He's the one guy we
have out there at receiver.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
He's just running running wind sprints. So all of that.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
But when you do the dollar cost averaging, could have
kept them around. Not that you love the situation if
your Kirk cousins in Atlanta, but you're still getting paid
and eventually someone's gonna call come calling. The Vikings had
the opportunity to try to keep Sam around, would.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Have had to pay a little bit more.
Speaker 7 (15:49):
I get it.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
But you have a guy where you have proof of
concept of what he can do in your offense, and
he can help McCarthy alone.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Or could have franchised him. But that's the point, right,
we could keep cut both of you. I could have
done it again. It's a thing.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
You could have done it for a year, and again
he becomes a valuable trade ship if and when McCarthy
gets a year. Now, obviously we are really going hot
take theory here towards the end of the third quarter.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
But hey, that's what we do. Man. It's Week one
of the National Football League season.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
He just this is like a nightmare, isn't it. It
just keeps getting worse and worse. That's what I'm thinking.
Watch go, This is like a nightmare. It just keeps getting.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Worse and worse. This is just of the year for
de Grom.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
You go seven innings and what's even more demoralizing is
he only had two strikeouts, so you did actually get bats.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Two ball, but you got nothing completely completely it's it's terrible,
absolutely terrible, absolutely terrible. I don't know what to say.
There's nothing I can say, like, oh, yeah, you just
wait till tomorrow. It's like they're just punching a time clock.
Wait until the end of the season.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
I mean, help me threw a shutout inning, though, I
mean it's amazing. Yay, Horis six stripes. I mean he
had an eight pitch inning. I mean, look at him. Hooray, Yes, yay, hooray, hooray.
I try Jason, Yeah, hooray. How did it feel? Uh,
you know, you know how it felt.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
It felt like I was really excited to watch Steve
Angelly play quarterback tonight for Syracuse. That's how it felt
on my two screen experience that I had.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
I mean, there aren't many bigger fus on a Friday
night than shutting you guys down for seven innings.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
Well, look it is, it's also set. Look what did
I harmon? What the Giants tonight? Will be great as
a Dodger fan, that'll be awesome. But it's not gonna
top this. I mean, no, no, no, but I mean
but look, but I mean, but Harmy, what what if
I told Harmon all week?
Speaker 7 (17:46):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (17:47):
You know, bet against us tomorrow, forget it where there's
no way we're for you. We are absolutely cooked. I
hope you're getting rich.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Harmon.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
I hope you're getting I hope you're You're just doubling
every time you bet against the Mets, and you're winning
and winning and win winning.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
I mean, the key is just knowing that eventually they'll
stumble into a win. Just once, it doesn't matter, So
you've got to know, Yeah, jump off that.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Jump off for Nolan McLain and then jump back on.
That's all jump off for Nolan McLain, and then you
jump back on.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
That's like you're you're taking some solace in the fact
that your guy off of well, it's been an interesting
week right of all your sporting events, but you're getting
fifty plus from Syracuse.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Yeah. No, they did give up twenty four to Colgates,
so that's yeah, but that's it. But it was like
thirty eight three at half, it was over. It was over.
It's clearly he didn't want to show anything else on defense.
Come clearly TJ.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Steve Peanut, Butter and Jelly maybe the next great quarterback
in Syracuse history. DJ, I mean, can you recreate that
sullen berman look from that uh that picture with our guy,
because if so, you could just take over all together.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
He got the voice of Cadence. And and yeah, I
think you can make this work. I might be able to.
I might be, but I really how you?
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah, me and the Palgasol guy we go and do
autographs and say that, Hey, do do your berman?
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Okay, sure, here you go. Hey, will you do me
a favorite? Can you put my name in a bermanis?
I'm sure? What's your name? Kid? I could do it
for it. Just give me a minute, all right, I
could do that for you.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Well, you can really rake on cameo one of those services,
you know, Oh, man, send it in. I'll get your
name into a song from the seventies, you know.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
And the thing what makes this worse tonight, right is
is this is this is really heavy stuff. But it's
and and and But I don't think that it's gonna
be something that is is uh, I don't think it's
be something to even in question when he's done. Okay,
because now I watched this tonight, watch the Mets. Just
give everything away, Fine, give it away, give it away,
give it but you can give him a video tribute
(19:57):
in this Oh yeah, and that was nice, right, They
played simple Man for him. He tipped his hat to
the crowd. It was nice, No, it was nice. It
was he knew, he goes man, I'm gonna set these
guys down so easy, And he did right, so you knew.
But tonight the Yankees and the Red Sox. Red Sox
batting right now in the bottom of the ninth Yankees
winning for to one. This is Apple TV's Game of
the Night. Aaron Judge hit a home run tonight out
(20:20):
of Fenway Park. And I don't mean deep at it.
He hit it over the Green Monster, over the stands,
on the top of the Monster, and out of Fenway Park.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
It was over the Draft Kings side, I mean. And
that's a big ass sign that they put out there.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Can I get a Draft Kings pick six? And Aaron Judge,
h it's a home over your Draft King side. Now,
it's not just that home run, but it's the fact
that it was home run three sixty two for his career.
Now he has broken the tie for fourth place with
Joe DiMaggio on the Yankee list for franchise all time
home runs. Right, the guy had two home runs last
(20:59):
night at Yankee Stadium as they mark the anniversary of
September eleventh. Second pitch of the night tonight from Lucas Giolito,
I think it was four hundred and seventy five feet.
He absolutely crushed it. The thing to think about and
how heady is this is. Look, there's lots of great
baseball teams with all kinds of great history, right the
Dodgers here in LA, all kinds of stars, you just
(21:19):
name them.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
But throughout Major.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
League Baseball history, no team is more decorated in stars
and in drama and in life and in championships than
the Yankees. And when Aaron Judge finishes his career, Okay,
he's thirty three right now. You see the level he's
still playing at right now, When he finishes his career,
we're gonna say, Aaron Judge had one of the top
(21:43):
five careers in Yankee history. And you're gonna say maybe
it's third. I mean, who's ahead, because you talk about
the guys, it's Ruth and Gerrig, Mantle, DiMaggio and Jeter. Right,
these are the guys, these are the five. These are
guys you've talked about the You and I have grown
up and saying their names all the time. These are
(22:03):
five of the biggest players to ever play the game. Obviously,
we have most of a history with Jeter because we
just saw his career.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
We saw all the.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Clutch moments, three thousand hits, the captain, the two way
play that he had throughout his his time as a Yankee. Right,
so Jeter, But DiMaggio, Mantle, Garygan, Ruth.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
There's your top five Yankees of all time, your top five.
And by the time Aaron Judge is done, like, he's
gonna be comfortably in the top five. And you're gonna say,
which Yankees do we knock out?
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Like, do not?
Speaker 1 (22:33):
Do we really knock out Joe d fifty six game
hitting streak, Well, it might have a better career. He's
gonna have one hundred and fifty more home runs than
Joe Demagio did. Now, Jody did lose three of his
years to war service, which would have been more horme runs.
But I can't count what he would have done when
he didn't. But you're gonna look at Judge's career and go, man,
the numbers, the impact, the war, everything compares incredibly well,
(22:55):
if not better, than three of those guys on the list, Right,
he's gonna have better number than Jeter. But Jeter's a
better two way player, and he was the captain of
the team the World Series. I think you might go
at the end to go, okay, so it was Jeter
and Ruth, right, because it's hard to it's hard to
cut up seven hundred and fourteen home runs in the
Championships and the guy that really built major League Baseball
and say, yeah, no, he's better than Ruth. But I
(23:17):
think you're gonna say at the end, like Judge might
be third, like that, that's the kind of career that
he is having. He's gonna finish one of the top
five careers all time for the most decorated franchise in baseball.
And you think about that for a game that's been
played for one hundred and fifty years, and for one
hundred and forty seven of them, the Yankees have been
the evil Empire. Oh, they spent five dollars on that player.
(23:39):
We can't spend five dollars here in eighteen ninety seven.
I know we're the Highlanders, but we can't spend where
do they have that five dollars from? I don't know
they have they have deep, deep pockets. I don't know
where they're going.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
That's where that's where Judge's career is headed right now.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
Yeah, it's it's an insane run that he's on right
averaging one one hundred and seventeen rbi per season over
one hundred and sixty games. The monumental home runs and
in a day of highlights, high Adam Silver that you
just see this constantly, and when you have a home
run like this, I mean it just cuts through everything.
You can have a full slate of games, full slate
(24:13):
of college football games. That's winning tonight when you're hitting
the ball to the low and four seventy five, let's
not kid ourselves. I mean, that's a terrible estimation of
how far that ball went. But fine, we'll run with it. Look,
you're never getting past Joe d for me, because as
much as we look at the statistics, I mean, you
got the fifty six games streak. Maybe if you and
Walt are able to put together a fifty seven, I
(24:35):
mean he'll fall in my estimation because it's you know,
you and Walt in the beat the Street contest. But
he also measures up better than anybody else. According to legend,
he was married to Marilyn Monroe and he was mister Coffee.
There are all things near and dear to my heart
that no matter what Aaron Judge does, he's not top
in that.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
I mean he's just not.
Speaker 4 (24:56):
So I mean that like in terms of pop culture
and arching dominance at the war effort, and it's really
tough to topple. But I mean, you didn't even get
down to Yogi Bearra, who's got more rings than anybody
in the that we outside of Bill Russell.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
When you do photo shoots.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
With those guys next to each other, right and some
of the others that we grew up watching that, you know,
he always wondered what was gonna happen with their careers.
Right Mattingly ended up having the bad back and it
stopped what was an amazing first decade for him. But yeah,
for Aaron Judge, I mean he captivates our imagination of
what this guy still has on the books because we
(25:36):
still have how many more years on his contract all
the way through twenty thirty one. So in pinstripes and
with those short porches, when you talk about Yankee Stadium,
you talk about going up and over the monster. We're
just getting started on where those numbers are right projected out.
We're talking some record breaking stuff and a guy that
doesn't have to say much to be one of your
(25:58):
faces of the game, like his counterpart for those years
down in Los Angeles, in the muted city of Anaheim.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
I mean, he's gonna have a career war most likely
of what's that, Jason, We can't hear you. He's gonna
have two shots, two shots, strikes out fety too.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
Accent is scoreless second inning, his first strikeout tonight, his
first strike out on this building in another uniform, no
more time.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Yeah, so you know it's a it's a doubly tough night.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
First struck out a Met one more time. After that,
the Mets lost a game one more time. No, that's it, man,
I don't know what to say.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
He owned your ass. Dude. Here.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Here's the thing, though, Is it really that difficult at
this point? I mean, come on, man, I throw seventy
I could have run out there in probably five inning.
I give you a quality start six innings and three
runs are less. I could give you that against the
Mets right now.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Told you three months ago, Smith, what happened to King Tong.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
You're gonna make this like when Many Burn said, I
bring him before you in chains. He's no longer the
big heavyweight.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Did you just say Tong Tong sahor you're gonna be yes?
I did.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
You're gonna be a prophet, man, He might as well
be hitting clean up. It doesn't It wouldn't do any
worse than he did tonight. That's for sure a prophet, yes, man,
I'll tell you.
Speaker 2 (27:30):

Speaker 3 (27:41):
Did our next guests see this coming? Nobody better to
talk to right now?
Speaker 1 (27:45):
Then the only Todd Furman on Twitter at Todd Ferman,
former Rods maker at Caesar's.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Check him out now CBS.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Everywhere you need a line, you need numbers, Todd Furman
has them for you.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
What's happening, man? How are you tonight?
Speaker 7 (27:59):
I am doing all gentlemen.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
Hopefully you guys are holding up in Maybe more importantly,
there aren't a ton of UCLA fans that are listening
in late tonight because there's thirteen of them in attendance
at Pasadena for this game against New Mexico.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
I like your tweet from a couple of minutes ago,
win or lose, UCLA will never schedule a Mountain West
opponent again.
Speaker 5 (28:16):
I think you had to right about that, ton I mean,
it ain't gonna help recruiting if you're gonna lose on
the road to UNLV and you're gonna follow it up
and loses more than a two touchdown favorite home against
New Mexico. But early returns on the Nico investment or
the de facto trade straight up for Joey Aguilar. Not good, gentlemen,
not good at all.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
So Todd, looking at tonight, we'll we'll get into tomorrow
in a second. Here here's Colorado and Deon Sanders. They fall,
they get thumped by Houston. I look at what's going on,
and I see Dion Sanders with three quarterbacks playing tons
of tons of minutes so far the first three games.
I just go, man, I don't know that betting against
Colorado every week this year isn't the right.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Thing to go.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
Like betting on them last year was good, Chador was
pretty good. But wow, man, they have problems right now.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
There was a lot of money that came in against
Colorado from their regular season win total perspective, we thought
that there was going to be some uncertainty around the
quarterback position, but I don't think anybody imagined in their
wildest dreams that Shadoor handing the baton would be to
three potential players. We knew that Juju Lewis had lost
a little bit of his luster and recruiting when he
decommitted from USC elected.
Speaker 7 (29:22):
To go to Colorado.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
Then we got the full experience of the Caden Salter display,
the transfer from Liberty, and tonight you get a third stringer,
a great storyline, but at the same time, look, you're
a backup to Shador and a third stringer for a reason,
a little bit limited physically. But tonight it was more
about the injuries for Colorado's defense. They just had no
answers to get off the field. The key junctures against Connor,
Wegman and company.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Todd, We'll look at some of the big games on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Some of them are walkovers, you know, the twenty or
twenty five point spreads where we got to find some
noise there. But Florida LSU seven point line forty seven
and a half Lagway trying to go to the on
the road at.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
The number three team in the land. Can he find
a way to get it done.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
I mean, you're going to get a Desker Florida team,
no doubt after what we saw last weekend when you
lose outright to an in state program as a seventeen
and a half eighteen point favorite. But I think this
Florida team has a lot of questions that have to
be answered. And you mentioned DJ Lagway. He is, no
doubt the headliner, but you dig into some of his
numbers against FBS opponents and while it's a short sample size,
it's not exactly a ringing endorsement for what was supposed
(30:25):
to be an electric talent. I'm not as optimistic that
he's one hundred percent despite some of the reports coming
out of Gainesville, and when you look at the task
they have in front of him, I mean, this is
an LSU team that has a big win on their
resume already against Clemson, but does have some red flags
in their own right and questions to be answered, most
notably can they.
Speaker 7 (30:43):
Run the football.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
I mean, their top running back Cayden Durham last week
against Louisiana Tech, thirteen carries subs thirty yards. So for me,
both these teams a lot to prove. Florida season kind
of hanging in the balance, and we'll see if LSU
can maintain their metal as a potential top five team
and a legitimate national championship contender.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
All Right, Todd, If I said to you tomorrow, Hey,
what's your best value bet?
Speaker 3 (31:04):
What do you like the most on the board tomorrow?
What would you give me? What's the sample?
Speaker 7 (31:08):
You know what.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
It's a number that's moved a little bit, But I
still think there is some opportunity, and I think Miami
makes a statement against USF. But the angle that I
would tell people to look to try and take at
this point with the full game number north of seventeen,
to look at the Hurricanes in the first half, he
should be able to find them widely available in that
minus nine nine and a half ten range. USF has
actually gotten off the slow starts, despite pulling off upsets
(31:30):
against Boise State and Florida to start the season. But
this is a different animal. I mean, Miami has NFL
caliber talent along that defensive line and in their offensive
line room. Carson becks starting to get more comfortable leading
this offense for the Hurricanes, and I just wonder what
USF has left in the tank. After two very physical
and emotional football games. I think the Canes get off
(31:50):
to a quick start. They can name the score and
may put up a crooked number similar to what they
did last year.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
Fox Sports Radio Jason Spitshaw with Mike Carman. Todd Furman's
our guest live from Las Vegas for everything He's got
popping at Todd Furman where you find him in the
Twitter verse, always kind enough to join us, give us
some insights as to where money is moving, and some
leans as he goes through the numbers. So Todd, let
me ask you after last night, how much money came
(32:17):
flying in on the Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 5 (32:19):
I mean, look, we may as well plan the Super
Bowl parade up there Atlantoa, right on Lobardi Drive, given
all the buzz, and look, I can understand the optimism.
I mean, given how well the defense has played against
two teams that won twelve plus games a season ago.
They clamped down, They've prevented the explosives, and Jordan Loves
look significantly healthier leading this Packers offense that has a
(32:40):
multitude of weapons, so it's kind of picking your poison
as an opposing defensive coordinator. The emergence at Tucker Craft
really gives them a chess piece. They can move all
around the board, but six and a half to one
or seven to one as low as I've seen them
at some books, not nearly enough meat on the bone
to try and tie up money this far in advance,
knowing that the Packers are still going to have their
challenges and when it comes to getting through the NFC,
(33:02):
whether it's the Philadelphia Eagles or somebody else to emerge.
Good team, but a lot to prove still for the
Lambeau Warriors.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Now, speaking of the Eagles game of the Week on Sunday,
Philadelphia and Kansas City. Kansas City is likely going to
be without Xavier Worthy already, no Nut Rushie Rice, no
Dallas Goddard for the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
What do you like in this one interesting game? I
think it loves a little bit of luster for all
the reasons you just outlined there, Smith about some of
the key contributors, especially offensively for the Kansas City Chiefs
that won't be out there suddenly. Patrick Mahomes has to
look a little bit further down the roster and lean
on players like Juju Smith, Schuster, Tykwan Thornton, and Hollywood Brown.
This would have been great if this was five seven
(33:42):
years ago with a couple of those receivers. A little
bit more problematic now, but Philadelphia at the same time,
for me at least, left a lot to be desired. Offensively,
they weren't exactly dynamic in their season opener against the
Dallas Cowboys, and from a defensive standpoint, I think Philadelphia
still has some things that they have to work out
in the second and third level. So if I'm getting
(34:03):
involved in the game, I'm looking at Kansas City as
a short home underdog and making a slight case to
go under the total. But no reason to panic either way.
Even if the Chiefs were to start the season zero
to two, still plenty of opportunity for them to get
themselves right back in the thick of things in the AFC.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
Let's go back to the NFC North with a battle
in Detroit.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Two teams stinging off of Week one losses hasn't cut
through that key number just yet, but Lions six and
a half point favorites a lot of jaw jacking going
on here between Saint Brown and Ben Johnson. A lot
of saltiness. How does it come out?
Speaker 7 (34:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (34:36):
You wonder sometimes if Ben Johnson has the edge over
a team that he saw every day in practice and
knows that offensive personnel inside and out, or if it's
Detroit Lions scheming for their former offensive coordinator, knowing his
tendencies and what they can kind of expect in this spot.
Looks the Bears an unenviable spot off a physical divisional game,
turning around traveling on a short week to take on
(34:56):
a team that they know is going to hit them
in the mouth. The one concern for the Bears if
they're unable to run the football and I don't really
see a path of doing so against that Detroit defensive front.
Can Caleb make enough plays in the passing game? I
think you're going to get Detroit to be a little
bit more dynamic offensively. But there's no doubt it was
a massive downgrade when you lose an offensive coordinator that's
this talented in terms of scheming up game plans as
(35:17):
Ben Johnson. Six and a half kind of no man's land,
but no surprise at all. Gentlemen, we've seen some under
money come in from that total of forty seven where
it opened now down in the forty six and a
half range.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
So are you throwing all your money on the Jets
on Sunday? I mean, after that incredible offensive.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it, but I do
have a bet on the Jets as a seven point
under against the Bills. I know that numbers down to six.
I think we saw enough from the Jets in terms
of an offensive identity that leaves me a little bit
more optimistic that they at least know who they are
as a football team. And while they can't do a
lot of the same things that Ravens can at a
high level, it's a poor man's version, and without add
(35:54):
Oliver along that defensive line and some safeties that leave
a little bit to be desired from a physicality and
foot speed standpoint. If this Jets defense has any pride,
I think that's the side of the ball where they'll
be better. I think Justin Fields can make a few
plays and the Jets will have every opportunity to pull
off a big upset in the division.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Now, let's explore that a little bit more. I know
ed Oliver got ruled out, but he's not worth a point.
What kind of volume do we look at to move
a point spread a full point?
Speaker 7 (36:19):
Tod, No, he's not worth a point.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
But I think there are plenty of concerns around this
Buffalo team in general, and that number in the wake
of their improbable victory against the Ravens open seven to
seven and a half, the seven and a half's were
cleared out almost immediately and you started to see a
little bit more support for the Jets. I mean, I know,
on the scoreboard the Jets lose their opener thirty four
to thirty two against the Steelers, but you dig into
some of the metrics, the advanced box score, and it
(36:42):
suggests that suggests that the Jets were unlucky losers in
that particular game. So a little bit of value here,
the high level of familiarity, a short week of sorts
for Buffalo, having played late into the night on Sunday,
with everything that they expended from an emotional standpoint, and
you can see why the Jets proposition as arguably a
defensive dog in this spot of the team that's going
(37:04):
to be able to run the football, shorten the game
and maximize their possession.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
All right, now, Todd, Now, last once to me, I
want to ask you, what kind of odds do you
give me.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
If the Mets don't win another Gome this season?
Speaker 7 (37:14):
Dodd?
Speaker 3 (37:15):
Can I just say it? Frostburg, I don't just count
the fans at UCLA, right, count the twelve fans? Then
what's the answer?
Speaker 5 (37:24):
I mean, look, I didn't even know the Mets are
still playing baseball, honestly, and say, I'm pretty sure Mets
fans don't think what they've been doing of late is
anything close to playing baseball, So maybe there's a good
chance they decided to just take the rest of the
season off.
Speaker 7 (37:38):
But kudos to the Mets.
Speaker 5 (37:39):
They invented ways to lose against the Philadelphia Phillies getting swept,
followed it up with a terrific performance tonight against the
Texas Rangers. But when you can lose Game one of
the series one nothing and then give up twenty runs
it combined over the next two games, the Mets are
finding ways to raise the bar. And if there's one
franchise that's known for a late season collapse, it is
the New York metropol You can.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Follow on Twitter at Todd Furman.

your prognostications, former ods maker. Check him out on CBS
Sports Sports Line as well, also on TSN.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
He's everywhere.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
He is our man, Todd Ferman, Todd as always buddy,
appreciate man. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
Always a pleasure. And it's just crying Shane that Harm
wasn't invited for Big New Kickoff to go return to
his old stomping grounds there on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
They couldn't be sure that he was gonna wear pants,
so that's why they say, listen, we had purple shorts pressed.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Man.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
Come on, It is a fair concern, but Harm becomes
a public liability and a career limiting move potentially on
their rise and if he's traveling with that crew.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 3 (38:48):
What's happening, Jay? How are you good man?
Speaker 7 (38:50):
How are we doing again?
Speaker 3 (38:51):
I'll tell you, man, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
I mean, I know we're only you know, one week in,
one game in, but wow, this packer's defense, this Packers
team looks really impressed.
Speaker 7 (39:00):
Yeah, it really does. You know what, man, they had
a lot of swagger actually coming in and then when
they did the micro Parsons straight, they're like, hey, we're
going for it, and one move like that could totally
energize a team. And you know, it's interesting because they're
you know, I, you know, the different coordinator actually talk
of ironically a week ago, they talked to Dan Quinn.
(39:21):
They tell me what I need to about Michael Parsons,
because obviously dan Quinn was the uh you know, Jeff
Appley's his new coordinator, but dan Quinn was coordinator in Dallas,
and Dan was like, hey, always challenge him, and you
could do all these things with them. You don't just
play him here, you know, one spot or two spots.
You can do so many different things with them as
long as you challenge him. And happily, he's like, oh
(39:42):
my goodness, I'm gonna put them everywhere. If there's whatever
week link I'm gonna find, I'm gonna play him there.
And it was perfect for them. I will tell you
this two games now. I went to Green Bay two
weeks ago and their general manager, Brian dudeis just came
over to me and said, and we're just talking. He says, Hey,
Dallas isn't really trading Mike out. I'm like, hey, dude,
(40:02):
Dallas is trading Micah. Like they're trading him. He's like,
come on, I'm like, they're trading him. Between him and Jerry,
there's something there with him and Jerry. And I told
every team that camp there's something there with him and Jerry.
And Jerry isn't a guy really like Jerry calls chaos
and then you kind of have makeup sex, you know,
and you don't really have stuff that goes on with
(40:25):
players where he you can't come back from it. And
there was something there that was the deal. And I
told Judy, I'm like, no, I don't. I don't see
him come back from it. I don't see them doing
a long term deal after this. And man, if you know,
I said, I know you guys are in on it,
but if you really want to do it, I said,
(40:47):
metaboys are expecting the phones to light up in the
dead week, which used to be the fourth preseason game.
If you guys love him, jump in and jump in early.
They're expecting to trade him for doing the AFC team
and no AFC team. Really nobody was showing interest, so
man like, and then Goody said, what do you think
(41:09):
it'll take? I said, I mean, I think I know
they're asking for at least two ones and if they
like d tackles so Kenny Clarkin. They said, man if
if Michael works out, then your first round picks those
two ones. They're you know, twenty eight to thirty two,
So what do you care. He's like, no, I agree,
and it would just be aggressive. And he was, now
(41:31):
I'm not saying I'm not saying he did it because
I said this, but like they were already aggressive. They
were the They're the ones who showed the most interest
from the early, early, early start.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
To the end.
Speaker 7 (41:44):
And it was kind of always them, the leaders of
the clubhouse. And I was I was suppus because I
was going around a camp saying like asking teams, hey,
would you be interested? And it's like, nah, the money's
too much or the picture too much or so along
those lines, and I'm like, Manna generational talent, and you
guys don't want to chime in when like Tamal Adams
(42:06):
are traded for for a couple of ones, you know,
like I was a little I'm a little confused why
other teams weren't jumping over themselves to get into those Well, well, Jay.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
Look I get what you're saying, but I think this
is a bombshell. Now thirty teams hate you because you
got this trade Gune like what blaz are talking to
the packers like that, they wouldn't have traded for him. No, no,
this is I can't go to any training taps ever.
Speaker 7 (42:31):
Again. No, I talked to twenty other teams about the
same thing, but the Packers weren't like, no, we're in,
but all these other teams like, no, we don't have that.
I was like, hey, you know, every time I go
to camp, a kid would say, hey, you think they're
really training them? I'm going yeah. So, like Philly asked
p I said, is uh is Mike is gonna be
there week? When I said, I don't think he is,
(42:51):
and Howie Road was like, come on, I'm like, nope,
I don't think he is. He said, I just think
it's Tim and Jerry. I don't think it's happening to him.
He's in no way. So obviously Ali Roseman and offered
the world and they wouldn't do it, but no. Every
team was asked me, Hey, what do you think is
gonna happen with Mike and Dallas, And I'm like, well,
I don't think they're working out, man. I said to
trade them, and They're like, come on. I'm like, I
(43:13):
have the same conversation that I have with Brian Goudakis,
with twenty other gms and and head coaches and owners
and so many conversations, And really the Packers were the
ones who were like, yeah, we'll do it, We're it.
There's a couple of other teams who act like they
were going to do it, and then once the Cowboys
were like real, like no, we really want two ones,
(43:35):
they bailed out. Between the two ones and the price,
everybody kind of bailed out. I'm kind of like I was.
I was. I was very I was shocked that a
lot more teams didn't want to do what the Packers did.
I was very shocked. I was explored. So I had
the same conversation with like twenty other team dad, but
(44:00):
all of the factors like, yeah, that's yeah, that seems
fair to us. Why wouldn't we do it?
