(00:53):
buying should be. And Welcome to tonight's show, the home
of the twenty twenty six and twelve twenty seven off
season champion New York Jets. They've already won this coming
off season and the next off season banner ceremonies this
weekend at MetLife Stadium. We've already won we do what. Listen,
(01:14):
we are the Patriots of the off season. When the
pesky games come, they give us trouble. But the off season,
when there's no games, we are dominant. Man. We are
a dynasty. Dude. It's only appropriate that it happens on
an election day where all you have to do is sell,
hope and change. Yeah, what else is behind the door?
I don't know? Oh, change? What about when things actually
(01:34):
have to be I know that. No, it doesn't matter.
We have now. We have now, Yeah, we have been now,
and we may look assets. What are they? Giant question marks? Possibility?
You know, could be an edge rusher, could be could
be a forty five hundred yard throwing quarterback, could be
no idea, doesn't matter. The NFL trade deadline belongs to
(01:56):
the Jets, as if you had any doubt when it's
something off the field that doesn't involve actually winning and
losing a game. The Jets were gonna dominate. Yeah, but
they left one man behind. Well, we'll get to we'll
get to Breese Hall. We'll get to stuff for week
ten with depression. Sadness, Yeah, sadness take it over. You know,
I'm gonna make a make a well I think enough
(02:17):
people have seen it now. But like Mash, like the
entire run of the of the of the episode of
the seasons of Mash, how one of the greatest comedies
ever on television. Like Klinger tries to get out of
the Army like it's a running gag for like all
twelve seasons. Clinger wants out. Make that now, he wants out.
He wants out right, He's trying to go Section eight.
(02:38):
He's trying to go everything. He's trying to get out,
trying to get out, trying to get out. When Mash
ends and everybody else gets out, he stays in Korea
Like that's breecee Hall. Hey wait a minute, wait it ended,
everybody else left. I've wanted to get out for a while.
How am I the one staying I'm the best offensive
player that was available at the trade deadline? How did
(02:58):
no one want a pony up a third round pick
for me? Just like uh Clagger, uh glue guy. Although
he doesn't know it at the time, he doesn't recognize
it and had that bit of introspect. I'll tell you
uh this trade deadline. This there's a couple of reasons why.
Like number one, obviously the two biggest stories of the day.
(03:19):
The Jets trade Sauce Garden to the Colts and they
trade Quentin Williams of the Dallas Cowboy. Yeah, broke that
kid's heart. I told you last night. Yeah, I gotta
ask you about that. Frostburg, we talked about the deadline.
You've out of know what Sauce You just said, Sauce Gardener.
So I think either you're like the new Adam Schefter,
or you put it out there like you either knew
(03:40):
something or you put it out there in the universe.
It was only just going with the one guy that
hurt your soul the most. No, that's right, that one.
I mean whether he does still or or not. Like
he's like all the quarterbacks there that you loved or
you love, you loved, and then as soon as they
were gone, it's like they never existed to you. No, Well,
it'd be nice to have you. Yeah. Yeah, you you
(04:01):
internalize every loss and remember every sequence. M Like, I
don't know, like chapter and verse of your your favorite thing. Uh,
But for quarterbacks, you've always had the ability to just
say beat it. Yeah with Sauce Gardener, I mean, I
don't know that it'll be as quick and easy. Yeah,
an excision. I gotta be honest with you. And look,
(04:22):
uh we we we got a lot of clubs in
our bag on this stuff. The Sauce Gardener trade. The
Jets get two first round picks back for Sauce Gardener. Okay, Like,
let's talk about this one right now. This is the
shocking one. Sauce Garter didn't even know. He just tweeted out,
Hey been real New York. Now I get to go
to Indianapolis. Okay, I was not upset, Like when I
woke up and I turned my phone on, the first
(04:42):
thing I got was a text from Frost, But that
just said Sauce. And I'm saying, dude, why the blank
did you see even say his name? Last night? Nobody
else was talking. You could have said Breee like you
said Breee Haul the entire time, but you said Sauce Guarden.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
No.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I mean, we talked about every everybody that was any
value the Jets we'd brought. Nobody mentioned Sauce except no,
that's what I mean, Like nobody else said that. Sure,
nobody else said that, except why did you say Sauce?
Like I'm thinking right now, did did did something? Did
did Jim Harbaugh tell Frostburg something that it's nothing? I mean,
I I don't know, like and something like we we
could accept Breeze hall quinnin all these guys know, but
(05:18):
you said sauce Gardener and sauce Gardner got traded. All right, Schefty,
I'm gonna call you Schefty from now. You're shifty. But see,
he gives you nothing on anything else you've asked him
about football wise, going on many a year at this point,
I want to find that from last week, almost no information,
he says. He just says, sauce Gardener. I said, sauce
Garden's not getting traded, Come on, man, And then sauce
Gardener got traded. I think anybody was available if the
(05:40):
if the price was right. Yeah, and that's the thing,
and and and and obviously look for all this all
the Jets gave Way talent. The Jets stink. They're one
and seven. They're completely starting over. It's new quarterback next year,
it's new everything. We're paying guys money that by the
time the Jets are good, I mean, it doesn't really matter.
Like Williams is gonna twenty eight years old and sauce Gardner.
(06:02):
I was not upset about the sauce Gardener trade. I'm
being one hundred percent honest with you, because when he
got signed to an extension, okay, they kept sauce Gardener,
but quite honestly, sauce Gardner, he's not the player he
was his rookie year. His rookie year was phenomenal, and
remember how good he's gonna be the next Revus. The
second year not quite as good as the first year,
(06:25):
but still really good. Last year not that great, and
then this year not as good as last year. It's
like when when movie sequels like Pirates of the Caribbean
started coming out. You had Pirates of the Caribbean, then
you had part two, Part three parts and each movie
gets a little bit worse than the last one. Sauce
Gardner was not the same player, right. You can look
at all the metrics of him and see how what
(06:48):
the quarterbacks rating is on passes. They target sauce Gardener
for I seen him get beat a lot this year.
But the big deal is that in the last few years,
the hand fighting that sauce Gardner could get away with
his rookie year in the league, they changed how they
call that, sure, and they they're not gonna they don't
let players do that as much anymore, and that's a
lot of his game. And so yeah, he's never really
(07:09):
found a way around that, not be able to use
his hands much. Because you remember last year we went
into the beginning of the season when they had to
play the Vikings in London and he got whistled for
like three pass interference penalties, all holding penalties, all with
his hands on the receiver. They don't let you get
away with that anymore. And he never was able to
adjust to the rule change. So when they signed a
(07:32):
big contract, I'm like, all right, I hope this is
gonna be good. I hope it's good. And this turned
out to be his worst year. So now going to
the Colts where they're gonna use them different ways, I
don't think they're gonna use him the shutdown guy. They'll
probably use them. You know, they play a little bit
more zone, so its a zone corner. Maybe that takes
a more advantage of his of his of his athleticism
and his ability, but he wasn't that guy. So to
(07:55):
trade away Sauce Gardner and to get two first round
picks and get out from all that money. They just
signed her to that extension, and they made it so
much that if we trade him, it's an easier thing
for us to do. We're not paying him a lot
of money upfront. We're not doing this. So I went
from not upset to downright excited about it. Now look
Sauce Gardner came to the Jets. He was terrific. He
(08:16):
was a great ambassador for the team. He did so
many great things off the field. He was just a
great person to have on the Jets. But by and large,
the Jets want to win football games, and they brought
in a couple of young corners this year they liked.
They got Brownlee before the deadline, which is a great trade,
which made Michael Carter expendable. They traded him away to
the Eagles. So I'm being serious. I was not upset
(08:39):
at the Sauce Gardener trade because I thought he's not
worth that money. He's not worth the money that they're
gonna have to pay him the next three years, when
every year is worse than the last one. He peaked
as a rookie. He's that guy in high school. You
knew that seventeen was like man, this kid, any girl
he wants, he gets anything. He's great. But then you
see him at a reunion like ten years later. It's due.
(09:00):
What happened to man? No, what do you mean? What happened? Yeah?
I put on a few pounds, but I'm still working
at the movie theater. Everything is still cool, Still driving
the trans am that I drove, you know, eight years ago. Yeah,
still great, man, still great. That's kind of you know. Okay, Well, Sauce,
Sauce peaked as a rookie. I'm not upset. I am.
I went from not being upset to being excited about
(09:21):
the trade because clearly, okay, we got to go in
on something else for next that whole time, were you
envisioning Matt Dillon and beautiful Girls? The Legend's dead, Birdie
I have, but the legend can still blank you up? No,
I was thinking of actually that. What was that episode
from Friends where Monica runs into her crush from high school,
Chipper called They called the Chip, the guy with the motorcycle,
(09:41):
and they ran into him all those years later and
he was still doing the same things. Where do you
live now? You know where I live? My parents live
over like they're still living with his parents. You know,
for some they'd like to like it to be what
do you drive now? I still have the motor the motorcycle,
the chipper right, the chip you would call the chip,
so that that's kind of what I thought. But I
look at this right and obviously Jets fans and I
(10:04):
joke because there was this kid that went viral and
crying as his dad told him when he came home
from school. But it's that reality of being able to
look in the mirror, and it's a very adult thing
to do for the Jets in this perspectives, like, we
like this guy. Clearly, the city likes him, the fan
base loves the great nickname, a lot of merchandising and
marketing opportunities. But the reality is, are you winning any
(10:26):
more games with him at that salary? No? No, no,
it prohibits you from doing it. We're one and seven
and stink with him. We can be one and seven
and stink and have money freed up to get better
without him. But that's been the argument I've had with
so many of these other moves. Go back to the
Micah Parsons move. We'll get to the cowboys and their
acts today and where they go forward. But for the
(10:49):
Jets you can get two number ones and maybe a
guy and d Ni Mitchell. We still have no idea
what he is. Right, he was hurt last year with
Anthony Richardson throwing to him. We know he now knows
where the goal line is? Does he? That makes him
a perfect Jet? Not knowing where the goal li is
makes him. I'm gonna go out and say that you
got a lesson learn as a Jets receiver. How often
do you really have to worry about where the goal
(11:10):
line at? It? Well, but you're at home. Come on,
you know what I'm selling? Hope and change here. Where's
the stay with me? Where's the middle of the field?
Where do we usually punt? That's how well do you
operate between the twenties? That's what we need to know
between the twenties? How often? How well do you operate
between our own goal line and our own thirty yard line?
That's That's how we're gonna run some routes. I'm gonna
(11:31):
start you at the hash mark. Let's see how you
navigate this this territory. No, all of it to say
with with the Jets is recognizing all right, you're you're abysmal,
and you have you are one of the teams that
as dismal as your You have two great assets that
a lot of other teams can use. So go into
the marketplace, which we've seen a bunch of deals already consummated,
(11:55):
but go into the marketplace with And this is why
it's still surprising that nobody came up to get Breeze Hall.
I guess the Chiefs offered a fourth is the one
of the reports later this afternoon. But other than that,
it's like you can go and get a full reset. Now,
are you gonna do it properly? I don't know. Oh no, No,
we're the Jets a whole. That's why the best part
(12:16):
is now between now and the draft, because everything is
still possible that maybe we get it right. Yeah. I've
always talked about the coaches from A to B, B
two C. Your GM right now is gone A to B.
He's giving you hope as look at everything that's on
the board of what we might be able to do,
and then you can start imagining some of these names.
Right if you watch some college football, like, oh, we
(12:36):
got three first round picks, we could get him and him,
Maybe we could parlay these two guys together because they
already know each other, and you start getting all excitable
about that, But we still have several months of the
regular season and a long off season to get But
that's how you know what you won today exactly, and
that's why you realize the Jets are like the play
hades Town Okay, Hadestown, a play on the Greek myth
(13:01):
of Orpheus and Eurriticy, where Orpheus and Riticy. Of course,
you know you're Reticy following him back and he looks
back when he's not supposed to when You'riticy disappears right
and goes back to Hell. Sorry spoiler that that's all
and never look back. I mean, Duff McKagan sang all
about it. And the whole thing with the play is
that you know, and they come to the end and
it it ends very sadly right with Orpheus losing you
(13:22):
Riticityriticy leaves. It's like, wow, it's a real downer. And Hermes,
who is the narrator of the play, comes out and says, hey,
we still sing a sad song all the time. We
still sing a sad song, and we think about it
and why do we sing this sad song. We sing
the sad song because maybe the next time things will change,
and they reset the They reset the play and goes
(13:43):
back to the very beginning when Orpheus meets you Riticy
for the first time. So it's like we sing a
sad song over and over again in hopes that at
some point the next time, maybe it changes. That's what
it's like being a Jets fan. We sing a sad
song over and over again and hoping that maybe the
next time it'll change. Maybe this time Aaron Glenn doesn't
look back and see Sauce Garter behind him, and there
(14:04):
go Sauce Carter. We sing a sad song over and
over again, hoping that it'll change the next time. You
ever go back and watch that Thanksgiving Day game hoping
the butt fumble didn't exist, or maybe one of those
AFC title games. Oh maybe yeah, at some point now.
But that's that's a sad song over and over again.
That's why it's over and over again. We wait, why
do we do it? It's important. We sing the sad
(14:24):
song over and over again. That's what we do. Yeah,
over and over. Maybe next time it'll be different, Maybe
this time will get it right, Moode, don't look back, booed,
look ahead to catch Joza, go get him. You had
no voice left, he sang so loudly today to you
guys blowing the picks. Oh yeah, hey, hey, the next time,
(14:46):
maybe we get it right. Next time, we get it right.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Well, here we are on Wednesday, and for the first
time I will say this, the Knicks game is ending,
the varsity game is ready to begin. Whoa, whoa? Whoa?
Are you just saying that because Tyler Kolak got a
couple of minutes here at the I mean, what do
we talk? You see some of the guys that next
had in that game at the end. I think Walt
Fraser played a couple of minutes, was it, Daddy? I
mean you had fourteen or fifteen guys, Yeah, find their
(15:23):
way on to the court. Uh. Yes, So they were
looking at each other like they'd never met. No. Fine,
I'm Jim, Hey, I'm Alex. How are you doing next?
To meet Joaby? Guys, we're in the same laundry. Do
you want to play point card or do you want
me to play because I would like to play port Okay,
that's that's fine. I'll play it Rock paper Scissors that final.
So yes, look, big doubleheader of the night. The opening game,
the Knicks just roll past the Minnesota Timberwolves. Uh fourteen.
(15:47):
It's a good game. At half it was, and then
the Knicks just to say, hey, we're the Knicks. We're
pulling away. Go New York, Go, New York.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Go.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
But the Wolves didn't have kg No they did. They
didn't have Tom Googleatta either. It was a huge law.
That's that's that's that's very difficult. Googs. Yeah, no, you're
not winning that game. Not winning but Marbury shoes, I
mean all of that stuff. We are now getting potentially
Western Conference Finals preview. We are getting Spurs and the Lakers.
(16:17):
Wemby and Luca are playing. I just I did this is?
Did you verify that? I? Well, okay, they show last
five minutes. They showed Wemby in the locker room getting dressed.
They had a graphic on Luka Doncic so I I
have to was a graphic Luca. We got no visual
and but Luca was in the graphic. Luca was in
Laker gear, not in the slimming but it wasn't a like, no,
(16:42):
it was actually him, Like it was Harry Potter with
the moving person. It's like the trading cards. You can't
expect Dumbledore to stay forever. Video of Wemby uh before
the game and a graphic of Luca. I I'm pretty
sure we're feeling good about this. Okay, Yeah, that's good.
And your guy Austin Reeves is ready and loaded for Bear,
I'm sure. I mean, look, this is because he's like
(17:03):
your hero. Now, this is what Look, he's the Scottie
Pippen till Luca Donson is Michael Jordan. Lebron's coming back
better than Scotty. Lebron's coming back is Bill Wennington when
he comes back. I mean, come on, man, you got
Luca is is Mike and and Austin Reeves is Pippin'
uh Ruey Hotchimore is bj Armstrong. Just be careful. Jackson
(17:26):
has been lured out of whatever made because he's got
a book out, so he's doing promos. Maybe Lebron is
Luke Longley when he comes back. Maybe maybe he's Maybe
he's Horace Grant. Maybe he's Steve Kerr like Lebron. Lebron's
coming back to Grant with or without goggles. With goggles,
he's with goggles, he's Force. Yeah, without goggles, he might
(17:48):
be Harvey. You don't know. I mean just look, this
is a big and look and you're saying, well, Harvey
Grant played for the Wizards for long, was the bullet
he It all goes back to the Harry Potter thing
watching Look, he has pen Is doing their intro right now.
There is a big picture behind Melika Andrews of Wemby.
There's a big one of Luca in his Laker jersey
right behind they are playing. They call him Michael. Yeah, hey, listen,
(18:12):
I don't want you to put anything Lakers behind me.
Put that behind her, Okay, I don't want that. I
don't want the Lakers be looking over my shoulder. Okay,
we beat them three years ago before I got fired. Now,
if they animated that Luca graphic, that would have been
funny as hell, like he was looking down on alone
and mocking him. But really, I mean too big. Look,
this is a huge game tonight. There's so much interest
(18:32):
in this watching Luca warm up on the court again.
Luca's going to play right. But Wemby we've talked about.
Not surprised that the Spurs are this good. Remember, I
don't like to say this, but I told you they
were my long shot NBA Finals pick because at some
point Wemby's becoming the best player in the NBA. I
thought it might take too closer till the All Star break,
but it's happening. Now we're into November and Wemby's the
(18:53):
best player in the NBA. Uh yeah, Luca, Yeah, but
it's okay. Well, I think I think they'll take you'll
take six up, one down. I think you'll you'll take
that going along the way. So you're already giving them
the victory tonight. Yeah, you'll take well, you take the five.
What I'm saying, you'll take five, six up, one down,
You'll you'll take that for this. But the Lakers, the
Lakers are so like the Spurs are fun right, like
(19:14):
they're coming back and now finally they have a star
that's more exciting to watch than than Tim Duncan. Boy.
I really like watching him just you know, box out
and and hit that fade away off the glass. Boy,
that's fun. That's fun seeing that over and over and
over again. But like Wemby's made the Spurs fun, and
the era of the Spurs is here being a dominant
team in the Western Conference, right, because it's not surprising, Oh,
(19:36):
when a guy becomes the best player in the NBA
that his team is gonna be good. Right. I can't
believe more people weren't on the Spurs this year, but
the Lakers. This is just absolutely fascinating because this is
the exact opposite of how anyone, including Lebron, thought this
season was gonna start for the Lakers. Because, you know, Leblok,
Lebron and the Lakers have been at odds. They've been
(19:57):
keeping him out. He's not in the circle of tru anymore.
He is way outside. He is way outside Ben Stiller's
circle of trust with Robert de Niro and meet the parents. Man.
He's so far outside. You know, both each want the
other person gone. Lebron wants to be gone. The Lakers
want him gone, and Lebron with whether he's old, whether
he just wants to sit out. You know, he is thinking, Okay,
(20:17):
how do I get my cachet back with the Lakers
without me they might not start out great. Maybe Luca
lifts them a little bit and they're a five hundred team.
But when I come back, we're better, and then I
get a little bit of my Hey, don't remember, it's
still Lebron's team. Is still Lebron's team, right, But what
have we seen instead? Luca has been terrific, And when
(20:39):
Luca's been out, Austin Reeves has won games all by himself.
And when he's out, Smith Junior, right exactly off the bench,
is scoring twenty five and twenty five minutes the Lakers.
For all the hot takes you see, you know the
Indiana Fever are functioning better without Caitlin Clark than they
are with her. Uh. You watch the Lakers and see
(21:00):
how they function They are functioning incredibly well without Lebron James.
They're functioning well without I mean really, I mean obviously
not for a long period of time, but nights when
Luca misses, they've still been okay. Right, You watch Austin
Reeves forty points, fifty points, thirty in a game winner.
This team is moving the ball around, They're getting more
players involved. It is a much more cohesive team with
(21:24):
Austin Reeves functioning as the one A or the two
to Luca's one, especially coming out of the backcourt. Reeves
doesn't need the ball in his hand as much Luca
can have the ball. It's not auditioned by subtraction. It's just, hey,
this fit right now really really works, whereas last year
was hey, Luca's got the ball, Lebron's got the ball.
Does anybody else really get involved in what did you say?
(21:44):
Did anybody really step up when that happened? Do we
think all the Lakers are going to be really good?
They're going to figure things out? They figured things out
without Lebron James. I mean, think about that when he
comes back. How is he going to fit in? I
feel like it's the same conversation we had that when
when Sanity was going on and Mellow was hurt, which
is why Insanity happened, and the questions were, uh, Mello,
(22:05):
how are you going to fit into this offense when
you come back? What do you mean for it's my offense?
This guy's been around for about a day and a half.
What do you talk? But that's really where the Lakers are.
They look better so far without Lebron James. I never
thought i'd say that, Yet here we are. Well, I
mean some of it. I think if you went to Carmelo,
first off and you brought any of that up, he'd
(22:25):
have flashbacks. Oh well, I mean him and Phil Jackson
are still fighting now about them. No, that's it Phil
doing this thing, which is you know, top seventy five book.
He and Sam Smith, a longtime beat rider for the
Bulls going through and now a great singer. Oh yeah, none. No,
they were all with Dan Patrick, and he validated a
point I've made for a long time. What's that? He said,
(22:46):
the guy you wished he would have coached was Christian Laytner.
How about that? They're selling the Christian Laytner thing forever
that he was just in a terrible uh oh circumstance.
He was a t wolf for all those years. But
you look at what the have been, and you got
what six to seven guys averaging six to seven averaging
double digit figures at this point, including Nick Smith Junior
(23:10):
in his three games. La Ravia has been fantastic off
the bench, Reeves average still averaging nine assists per game.
So you're moving the ball and guys are finding their roles,
and you me you know, harken back to last year
where there's a lot of standing around with all right,
who how's this flowing? I maan, how many possessions did
each guy take off? Where you can go back and isolate,
(23:32):
all right, there's Luca. He's not even in frame right,
hands on the hip as Lebron takes the ball or
vice versa, and overall it's still played. It played well,
it's just disjoin it here. For this first part of
the season, with Lebron on the shelf, they've been able
to figure it out. When Luca's not there. Everybody's relishing
the extra minutes, the extra touches, knowing that they might
(23:53):
be part of a deal. Like that's the other part,
Like a lot of these guys are just trying to
find their mark, to show their value either with JJ
Reddick and what the Lakers are building or if not,
auditioning for another team. Because there's no way I don't
believe at all that this is where we're at anywhere
near the trade deadline in terms of what this Lakers
(24:14):
roster looks like, whether Lebron's gone or still there or
whatever the any parts are you making tweaks or are
you saying we need another big player in but the
antelary parts, I don't know. I know we need a
big player. Can't get not gonna get Wemby. So but
I mean, this is this is the worst nightmare for
Lebron James because the one thing Lebron has always never
(24:36):
had to fight about has been relevant. Right. That's why
this is a big deal. Lebron has been the straw
that has stirred the drink in the NBA for twenty years.
Still at this point, he is the number one star
in the league that everybody talks about, that that that
moves the needle. Yeah, it's great to talk about. We
talk a lot about Wemby does. It doesn't do what
Lebron does. I love talking about the Knicks. Knicks are relevant.
(24:57):
Nicks are huge, not as big as Lebron years he
has had them. No matter what he has done, the
one thing he has never had has been Wait a minute,
I'm just the I'm the second guy in the Buddy
Cop movie. I'm I'm the I'm the sidekick, I'm the
he's not been that guy. I'm not gonna lie. I've
really enjoyed these first couple of weeks of the NBA
season because this is I mean, we we talked about
it a little bit, but because of this marquee matchup
(25:21):
against the Spurs, this is the first time that it's
fully in focus. I'm enjoying just watching the rest of
the NBA and seeing these guys getting their shine. Right.
You got wem Bin Yama and Castle a nice one
to two in their own rights right now. That Castle
is healthy and giving you the minutes he is, uh
and you look at some of the other young stars.
We talk about your nicks and and laughers like they
(25:41):
pulled off today. It was good that that Ann Edwards
is back and able to play and all. But and
Yann is putting up points whether he becomes a nick
later on, but that Lebron doesn't have to be the
focal point to coverage, right and and that top part
of a funneling down of NBA stories. There are plenty
of other stars taking their shine and and taking up
(26:03):
the the oxygen in the room. When he comes back, great,
But for now he's over there. He's just in time out.
But he's gone. Look, he's still playing, He's still he
still needs to figure out a way. And maybe this
is why he's sitting out because I got to figure
out a way to to be be the guy again. Right,
He's never That's the thing. He's never been that guy.
He's never had to be the Oh maybe now I'm
(26:25):
lower in the pecking order, whether you and and if
he came into this year and it was him and Luca,
you could say, Okay, I'm okay with it being Lucas team,
but still everybody knows it's really my team and when
the playoffs come, I'm the guy taking the shots because
he's always been a big playoff performer. So I'm okay
with that. But now it's he's getting such shunted aside
to the point where where you really wonder, like, how
(26:45):
is he gonna handle not being the story again? And
I've said this, I can't. I still have a hard
time envisioning Lebron James suiting up for this Laker team
with the way the offseason has gone and how they
have said to him, you are not our guy, we
would like you to go, and he says I would
like to go. I still I can't believe he's actually
gonna play. But that's the most fascinating store in the NBA.
(27:07):
What kind of role he has when he comes back.
Is it the number three guy? How does he adjust
with not being that big star again? Like? How is
he just gonna be really sullen and surly the entire time?
Is he gonna be funny and not caring? Is he
gonna play once and then not come back for the
three weeks? Like that's fascinating because I don't know how
he's gonna handle this. I'll take you back to arriving
at Northwestern. I went to a competitive high school in
(27:31):
the in Chicago and at a lot of smart people,
a lot of people smarter than me. But then I
get to Northwestern and I'm used to that. A lot
of people that came to Northwestern were not used to that.
They were the smartest kid by far, and all of
their reaches across the country and globally, and then all
of a sudden they were getting smacked around in those
classes didn't go so well. Lebron is finally seeing that
(27:53):
for the first time in his life. He's that little
kid with the book bag, going, yeah, this ain't so
easy anymore. I mean, he might be the number three
guy in the Lakers. If he ever look at you
in promotion Austin Reeves.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
I I this is this is a load of crap
right now, what we're watching? It's an appen How the
hell are the Raiders and Broncos tied at seven? How
are the Raiders tied in this game? Oh? How is that?
I can boil it all down to one word. This
is so the Broncos stink day stace. This makes absolutely
(28:37):
no Hunter stinks. The offense had forty four yards and
for one drive made it a tie. And that's the
other thing. Because the Raiders stink. It's a tie game. Yeah. Look,
and and I'm not upset because you know the big
bull prediction made last night. I said, Gino's gonna throw
three picks, including one in the first five throws of
the game. The Broncos are gonna score forty points because
(28:57):
their offense is better at home. I'm not upset about
that because a little bit. I'm not the only way now,
but I'm not. The Broncos are gonna win. I mean
they were nine and a half point favorites. Yeah, but
But this is the point now, is that I'm I'm
just upset that and I'm more embarrassed for the Broncos
that I am happy that we have a close game
on Thursday night. I mean, I'm excited because it's closet.
(29:22):
I should be more excited that it's close, but instead,
I'm just mad that that the Raiders and Broncos are
tough like this. This shouldn't be taught. The Raiders are terrible.
But that's the thing we've talked about these Broncos. And
while the final final stuff looks pretty right, you have
a quarter here, a quarter there, and you put up
some points, the overall sixty minute effort is highly inconsistent.
(29:45):
Yeah right, and and there are parts of this. Look,
they may still score forty. You have no idea, what's
what's still to come? But then this game because it
is after all, yeah the Raiders. Yeah, but they're playing
at home on a Thursday night. Theforms look great.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Now.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
That's the only passing part now is you can say, boy,
the Broncos stink tonight, but boy they look great in
those you know, I'm thinking about Craig Borton, I'm thinking
about el Way. Oh, that's like that the Sinful episode
when you know George designed the uniforms for the Yankees. Boy,
the Yankees losing six to one, but boy, they sure
look comfortable in those uniforms. They look around like, hey,
they look great in those uniforms. Like that orange like
(30:21):
that that really pops like this, These throwback Tom Jackson
John Elway early era Broncos unis are great, but good
for you. They stink inside them recognizing the greatness that
is Tom Jackson. I think people need to go back
and look at his career. He had a fantastic tool.
But yeah, this is Game two seventy right now. I
mean if I'm just like throwing a dart at the
(30:41):
board of my two seventy two in terms of celebration,
because this is this has been terrible. There's been three
plays and misadventures. The punter for for Denver has been awful. Uh.
And then they keep citing the wind. I'm like, forget
about the wind. He's hitting it off the side of
the foot. But the wind doesn't have anything to do
(31:01):
unless you're telling me it's that powerful. It could be
that in that two yards he's dropping it onto his
foot that suddenly there's just that ninety five mile an hour, Gus,
that's you know, taking him through a wind tunnel. Hey,
you guys went to the super Bowl and parked because
Sean Landetta whiffed on a punt in the playoffs. Yeah,
(31:22):
but those were those were like hurricane gusts. Here. I'm
looking at everything weather wise talking about it is like,
I don't see anything stronger than eight miles an hour,
which is nothing. That's a that's a little breeze. But
what if the breeze, what if it was all centralized
and localized to his foots? What if it's Drew Brees,
what if it's what if the breeze? What if it's
like a like a dust level and starts the middle
(31:42):
of the field, Like I like that the dust if
that happens, not not the vacuum cleaner, no, but the
actual dirt level. Yeah, no, dirt level you know what
was one one and never and never got it from
time out for trivia he won, He won a dirt dove.
He was supposed to wait, he won a bunch of
answering trivia questions. We're all sitting around as funny as hell.
(32:03):
Todd Donahoe's the host going all the way back and
it was one of the early call in shows. He
gets on and he wins a metal detector, he wins
the Dirt Devil and a couple other things. The only
thing that showed up was the metal detect. Want a
metal detect? So he was walking around on the beach
just you know. Eventually they bought a house on a
river and he would go find some cool stuff. Oh
(32:25):
that's nice. I found an engagement ring, money clips. You
never know what you're gonna find on I never know
what and actually an adventure. Yeah. So seven to seven,
middle of the third quarter and Gino Smith. Maybe we
spurred Gino Smith on because I will he did have
four touchdowns a week ago. I will take credit for
last night saying he's gonna throw three picks, one's going
(32:47):
to be, one's gonna be a pick six, one's gonna
be within the first five throws. And he's been acceptable
so far, meaning he hasn't thrown a pick. He hasn't
been the four touchdown guy a last week, but he's
been accept Maybe throwing that out there, I got that
out of Geno Smith now, so you're welcome Raiders Nation. Well,
one of the things that's been really uh pressing here
(33:09):
for for Gino Smith and we talked about it a
bunch last night. While you're down a top notch cover
corner in certain you do have one of the greatest
pass rushes going in the game. We're talking record setting
through this point in the season. Historically, they're already talking
about eighty four bears. You want to go back that way,
he's taken five sacks, but that means that's five times
(33:31):
he did not put the ball in harm's way. Yeah,
maybe they could have been two or three inc that
could have happened, but that's just it. And so instead
he ate it. So he did the right thing, you know.
And to think that the Bronco look, it doesn't make
any sense that the Broncos are here, right, it doesn't.
It really doesn't make any sense that they're struggling tonight
with the Raiders after some of the performances they have
(33:55):
put together so far this season. Now we're at the
midway point of the year now, right, so we're we're
in week nine and this should have been the moment
where the great teams, the ones that are showing you
we are far and away the top of the NFL. Right, yes,
there's a lot of contenders, but usually get a couple
(34:15):
of teams in each conference that separate themselves a little bit,
that show you, hey, these first eight ten weeks, you
know what, we're really good. We're really good. And yeah,
we're gonna lose a game or two the rest of
the way because you know, you can't win every week,
and maybe it's a matchup, maybe it's an injury or something.
But usually you get a couple of teams that are
separated themselves. That's the unique thing about this NFL season.
(34:36):
Not one team has separated themselves where you could say
they are the overwhelming favorite to go to the super Bowl.
They're one of the top two teams in the conference,
and boy, I expect to see them in the conference
title game. Right you go, you go, division by division,
the Bills and the Patriots leading the AFC East. Right,
the Bills not quite what we thought they'd be. They've
(34:58):
shown that they are much more all than we thought.
The Patriots have played nobody right this schedule, it's the
easiest schedule in the NFL. And five finally, they play
a good team on Sunday, but everybody they play stinks
and they haven't even played the Jets yet. Okay, so
is that what makes it hurt so much? Easy? I
can see how much this wounds you because they're walking
through this schedule, they haven't played the Jets yet, and
(35:19):
you just had a half of fires. It doesn't because
down halfway through. Now listen, it doesn't bother me that
they're winning. It bothers me that look how good the
Patriots are. Look how great vrabel Is looked at that.
Drake May is an MVP candidate. He's playing a bunch
of stiff teams. Haven't played anybody good. They played the
Bills once. Okay, that's but it's not like the schedule
gets harder than us the way. But they've got you
(35:40):
got a beat. Who's on the schedule. I know it's
the same thing for you, But don't tell But don't
sit here and tell me how great they are because
they they're beating a bunch of stiff teams. That's the
thing about the payo oh, Drake May is Yeah, I
think I'd put these numbers up against you. And I
can't throw the ball more than twenty five. Can't palm
that ball. Now, the Duke is a really hard way.
But you go there. The Steelers, they stink, they don't
(36:03):
do anything well, yet they're at the top of the division. Okay,
in the South, the Colts are good. Does anybody believe
in the Colts. No, it's not a team that we think, oh,
they're gonna go all the way. Look at the AFC West,
you had a lot of talented teams, Broncos up at
the top. Yeah, they got problems obviously, because here they are.
They've lost a couple of games. They nearly lost a
game to the Giants, need to score thirty points in
the fourth quarter, and they're tied with the Raiders. You
(36:24):
go to the NFC East and the Eagles have issues,
still figuring out who they are offensively. In the NFC North,
the Lions, we thought they would jump in and be
great all the way through, but they have shown you
we will stub bar toe all the way through. The South,
we thought Tampa Bay might be really good, but no,
they've hit the skids last couple weeks. Now they're coming
off of buye. In the NFC West, you want to
say the Rams, maybe, but the Rams have shown you, hey,
(36:46):
we can lose. This is not every week where we're
beating teams forty one seventeen. This usually we get like
there's at least three teams right now in the NFL
that we can say, hey, they're really good. They are
the elite, right, even the Chiefs. Everyone's Chiefs are one
game over five hundred. They lost last week, Right, the
Chiefs have problems. Everybody's got problems. There's not one team
(37:07):
or again, you'd think there would be at least three
that you could say they're great, they're at the top.
This is who right now the favorites are to get
to the super Bowl. Instead, it's everybody has issues. The
best teams have issues. This is a wide open season,
one of the more wide open seasons I can remember.
And it's like college football in the NFL the same thing,
absolutely wide open. Everybody's even if the the Broncos win
(37:29):
this game, I'm not gonna walk around and say see
how great they are. No, they held the Raiders up
for three and a half quarters before they found it
wind it winning a game like I can't remember where
there's not been that favorite because normally it's the Chiefs
are this good and and the Eagles are this good,
or before them, the Patriots were this good, the Steelers
were this good, the forty nine Ers were this good.
But this year, nobody, nobody. You can say, yeah, they
(37:51):
can beat anybody any given Sunday on a field. Right now,
you cannot say that about any team in the NFL.
This is great for business and certainly for us for
the second half. Look, if you're a fan out there
of a team that's in a quasi contender status and
you've ever thought, oh, maybe if things break our way,
you know, I would go to the Super Bowl city,
go book yourself a room somewhere in the larger Santa
(38:11):
Clara area, because right now you have no idea how
this is gonna break out. Right, Which teams are healthy?
You talk about Tampa, can they keep anybody on the field,
and it's Baker Mayfield. Every week it seems like he's
being introduced to some new guys to either run the
ball or catch it. You talk about these Broncos, well,
last week, great game against Houston. Not aesthetically pleasing unless
(38:32):
you just love to watch. You know, a chess match
where one little thing is going to make a game
eighteen fifteen isn't something that's jumping off the pages. And
the highlight reels. But it was a good fount of
you win that one. They're on this six game winning streak.
But you got Cincinnati, the Giants where they needed to comeback,
a beat down of the Cowboys. I beat a lot
of teams that, as you like to say, stink as well.
(38:55):
So you beat who's on the schedule, and you hope
that you find some sense of ideaanity as you go.
And certainly for Denver, they're going to be trading on
how far that defense can take them and hoping to
sprinkle a little magic on bow knicks now and again.
But yeah, your your point's well taken is that there's
nobody that scares you. You can go team by team
and decide which side of the ball or when we
(39:18):
want to add that pesky special teams thing. That's where
the Rams comes in, right, because they've had all sorts
of issues and they're kicking game and secondary they've addressed
it to a degree. We'll see how that holds for
the second half. You know, you take a team like
the Rams and say, okay, well, if they didn't have
special teams, miscues, miss a field goal at the end,
they would have won those games. Yeah. Remember they would
have lost the Colts if An Mitchell the way through.
(39:42):
But that's just it's one play here, one play there
in the margin of error has been diminished, which is
the way he wants it. Well, he gets it, and
that's exactly what you did there, Guns and Roses. Very nice,
very nice. Yeah, full on Duff McKagan day for me.
But as you know, you're you're watching this game, this
just feels like the Broncos will do just enough to win.
(40:05):
It's not pretty, and you move on and you're left
with the same questions that you had in the second
quarter when they could move the ball the third quarter
as they're sputtering and trying to get to midfield. Yeah,
this is where we're at. NFL twenty twenty five. It's fantastic.
You want to do your little Super Bowl odds thing
real quick? Sure, go ahead, all right? You got the
Chiefs are your favorite five point fifty, because why everybody
(40:27):
else is I don't know. The Bills at plus six hundred.
The Lions are the favorite in the NFC, tied with
the Eagles at eight to one, Rams just behind them
eight and a half. Packer's still at nine to one
despite their sputtering offense. I don't know what they are
at this point. Colt's at eleven to one, and then
your next favorite the seattlew oh there we go, Yes,
(40:51):
eleven to one, Yeah, Sam Sam Sam Sam Sam Sam
So yeah, New England and the Chargers still down there
at twenty five. It's the free Nobody you can say
is really really good? Nobody nobody, And again going towards
the end, I agree with you. It's just gonna be. Boy,
how are the Raiders gonna blow this game? Is it
gonna be such Raider esque fashion or will be just
(41:12):
a generic Thursday night football? Hey, there's a field goal
to win the game, or they really go full Raiders
like that's what I'm hoping that some hope. But you
want to see Gino, Yeah, I hope that that happens.
But is it gonna I mean really, because you can
never take the full memory of his Jets dumb out
of there, because I mean just every time he's on
national television, what do you get in your timeline? I
(41:34):
sure as hell see Gino Smith was punched in the
face today seven at least three or four times, seven
to seven. Midway through the third quarter on Thursday night football.
These are the games al Michaels has warned about
