have to get correct a very big wrong. And I

Lowan Krown You turning in by phone on right now?
You turn your microphone on right now.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
That's Happy fourth, Happy Money fourth.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
It is American hero Joey Chestnutt and his sixteenth championship.
It is not just hey, Joey chestnut but it is
American hero. He saved the Fourth of July. There was rain,
all by himself, just like Bruce Willis did and every
movie he's ever done. He saved Fourth of July. He
stayed there was gonna be no contest. It was raining.

(01:28):
He said, blight that we're gonna do it. They we're
gonna cancel fireworks all across the country. They were gonna
cancel the fourth mean people actually come into work in
the afternoon. And he saved it by winning the hot
dog eating contest. And he's reduced to just a mention
at the end of euro update. Oh, by the way,
Joey Chestnutt, you treat his name, You put respect on
his name.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
Yeah, you know, Jason, I studied under a Pulitzerprise winning journalist.
I can only wonder what he would think of me
reporting on the.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Nathan's Hot eating contest. Good thing he's dead, Wow, good thing.

Speaker 6 (02:06):
Yeah, that escalated quickly. Here We're talking about a guy
who said, you know what, we will not be felled.
I will not allow those people that bet four thousand
dollars to win twenty five cents to have those bets
go on cash today. No, we are going to have
a competition. We're gonna make it work. You saw those
sad sex standing out there in the rain with their

(02:29):
cigarettes drenched, dangling from their lips, just hoping to see
a glimpse of these sixteen time champion You know, you guys,
today we celebrate our Independence Day.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
You guys actually are honestly right about this because during
the lightning delay, people were freaking out on social media,
including a gentleman named Joe who tweeted and I quote,
we didn't revolt against the British so that one day
we would cancel the hot dog eating contest.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Day.

Speaker 6 (03:01):
You wait it out, man, You wait it out, or
you take it indoors to a Nathan's down the street.
There has to be a competition right on a July fourth.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, but hang on, I want to go back because
usually harm you're the guy that goes dark and mentions
dead people.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
I celebrate life. He was glad he was dead. I
celebrate histories.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah. Here here's a here's a guy Isaac long crome
that you have. You know it was really great to you.
And you said you're glad he's dead. What is that?

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Oh, he'd be glad if he knew that I was
reporting on the Nathan's hot dog eating context.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Well, then he's a snob and put him in his
place is what should have happened.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
He already is in his place.

Speaker 7 (03:45):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Wow, he doubled down.

Speaker 6 (03:49):
He grabbed another shovelful.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
I'm picturing your dad. I'm picturing this. This person's being
packed in whitehead from the back of the school movie.
You just died a couple of weeks ago. We are
not going to report on such snowberry as hot dog.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
You're really You're actually on the right track, Jason. You
are on the right track.

Speaker 6 (04:05):
So it's about right.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Yeah, I mean I got to watch it. I mean,
now you're doing your Valdemort and Harry Potter is dead. Laugh.
In addition to I Low, I'm joe positivity over here.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, I mean, Isaac, that just got really dark, really fat.

Speaker 7 (04:20):
I don't know how we would recover from that one.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Guys, I don't know, but you luckily we don't have
to because Joey Chestnut is saving it for us.

Speaker 6 (04:26):
We did, I mean even March through the rain, pumping
his fist ready to go, said at the end, I
mean the under cash so easy.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, that was a pretty easy bet. I mean it
went down the hot dog eating contest. That was a
pretty easy bet.

Speaker 8 (04:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:39):
It went from the delay. I mean we talked to
Todd Furman on Friday, the question of air quality, humidity,
all of those things factoring in, but then you have
the delays. So the total actually moved from seventy two
and a half to seventy one and a half, and
it was never challenged. Why because there's such a gap
between first and second place? Why push yourself? You can
go and have, as he said, a liquid diet with

(05:02):
some beers. A little later on, I.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
See, I don't think it's a liquid diet. I think
like it's beer. I think that's gonna be his diet tonight.
He said, I have room for some beer tonight every one.
So I think that's what it's going to do.

Speaker 7 (05:11):
Bud Light still count as beer.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
It's still everything still counts.

Speaker 6 (05:15):
I don't know what that rebranding and purposing. Travis Kelsey adds,
and it was all over the WWE pay per view.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
It's gonna be Bud with two. D's bud the light. Yeah, No,
it's different. It's different. It's a bud to the light.
That's what we have right now.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
When you hit an obstacle and you have something in
the road that is stopping you from moving full fours ahead,
whether it's in your personal life, relationships, or in business,
what do you do? You pivot And that's what they did.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I will just say this. In the history of sports. Yeah,
in the history of sports, the Yankees have the most
championships with twenty seven, the Montreal Canadians the second most
with twenty three. In third the Lakers and the Celtics
with seventeen, and then is Joey Chestnut with sixteen. He

(06:04):
is coming for the Celtics and Lakers next year. In
the next two years, he will pass the Celtics and
Lakers and only have the Canadians and the Yankees to
try to get to. Now he's thirty nine, he even said,
I'm getting older now I'm thirty nine. I think it's
kind of like that. This is the equivalent of, Hey,
will Tiger catch Jack when you're counting majors. He's getting older,

(06:25):
He's gonna get there. Will Joey chesnutt catch the Yankees.
He's got sixteen Joey ches and the Yankees have twenty seven?
Will he catch the Yankees? Well?

Speaker 6 (06:34):
Depending on the math, though, Jason, I mean, you're also
forgetting John Cena. And we don't know what the true
count is Rick Flair because he won everywhere he went.
They claim sixteen times, but that's just WWE ANDWA back
in the day.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
No, it doesn't matter. He's gonna blow past Rick Flair
next year. He's got sixteen already. Doesn't matter.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
Yeah, I mean, he goes as long as he wants.
I mean, it's dude, I did like that Momana the announcer,
who's I should know by now. But when he took
off his carnival barking straw hat for a moment, he
was wearing one to for an ant acid as he
went to the announcement, I'm like, good for you.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah. No, that dude, that dude needs more run. I've
said it for years, that dude needs more. His intros
are amazing. It's like it's like he's introducing people who
were going to fight a war against an alien species.
These are the people who are gonna protect our planet.
As they fly off in the most dangerous mission of
their lives. Oh you say in nineteen ninety six when

(07:33):
he saved the aliens the first time, that was the
only time we need to call on Will Smith. Then
it was years later. I mean that's kind of how.

Speaker 6 (07:40):
He speaks, no question about it.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
How has he not gotten like more run? How has
he not gotten more more famous? I don't understand. I mean,
this is this is not like it's his first year
doing He's been doing it for a while now.

Speaker 6 (07:51):
I really you know, I started diving in. I'm only
two episodes in. But there's now a multi part documentary
on the history of American gladiators. How about we resurrect
that and make him our announcer? Oh, the Battle of
the Network Stars and make him our announcer.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yeah, but do people really watch network TV? If people
know who a lot of those people are anymore?

Speaker 6 (08:11):
We I mean we bring in I mean, look, network
is I can use the term loosely. Now we make
that a a.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Small n Yeah, dude, it would be have to be
Battle of the Streaming Stars because like anybody these and
so and so are you from Gray's Anatomy or n
C I S or wait, which are you from?

Speaker 6 (08:29):
Which are which are the actual networks team up at
this point, then there's an actual teams steam which.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Are these interchangeable cop police procedural Are you or or
or Gray's Anatomy? Are you from?

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Like?

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Which of these? I don't know? I'm sorry.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
I mean there's one one team representing all the Chicago
shows that are at NBC.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Maybe that's how you do it. Maybe that's it. Instead
of Battle Network stars, it's cops versus police versus lawyers.
Right that those are the three networks at least lawyers
and the doctors. That's the holy trinity of TV show.
They keep going back to you got cops, you got
you got lawyers, and you have doctors. Like those are
three shows that for fifty years people have wanted. That's

(09:10):
kind of how you have it now. I'm on the
doctor team, I'm on the lawyer team, I'm on the
cop team. And that's how you do it. That's how
we rebrand it, I mean.

Speaker 6 (09:17):
And then we bring in William Peterson and Sam Waterston.
They give us each one really good one liners and
then go off as the competition gets underway.

Speaker 7 (09:24):
Guys, is Independence Day only the tenth most American movies
ever made.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Well, because you have every Rocky movie.

Speaker 7 (09:32):
I mean, that's way more after Top Gun came in
at one.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Top well, Top Gun is because Top Gun is one
of the greatest movies of all time, and Top Gun
Maverick is even better than the first one.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
Why are you disrespecting our president?

Speaker 3 (09:43):
What do you got man? Because listen, you had a
movie with Tom Cruise, okay, and then you had a
movie with Bill Pullman. Come on, man, Bill Pullman is
the president? Come on? Yeah, I mean really, come on, man,
that's crazy. I mean Bill Pullman as the president. As
the president Bill Pullman, Yeah, he was an awesome president. No,
he wasn't he he was. He was the He was
the dude from Spaceballs who was down dressed yourself. Come on, man,

(10:06):
I I can't. I couldn't buy him as the president.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
Ratings by flying in F sixteen to defeat Aliens?

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Does anyone have any Yeah? And what happened? He had
no missiles left. We had to rely on Randy Quaid
to save the cut spoiler.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
Come on, man, give away the whole movie while you're
at it.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Isn't isn't it? Randy Quaid? Like squatting in a house somewhere.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
No, we we we just leave him alone.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
I mean, come on, man, you can't.

Speaker 6 (10:30):
There's a lot to talk about there.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
The President runs out of missiles and Randy Quaid's gotta say,
I mean, come on, I mean Top Top Gun easily
number one. Yes, the Top Gun, Rocky, Top Gun and Rocky,
I would say, the big one.

Speaker 7 (10:42):
About Team America World Police Man, that's got to be.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Oh that's a big one. That's that's in the top five.
That's the top talent, Red Dawn. Oh yeah, the original record,
yeah four, Apollo thirteen America, Yeah, yeah, kind of is.

Speaker 7 (11:01):
What about Captain America? The first Event?

Speaker 3 (11:04):
No, no, no, no, no, First Avenger was boring. You
get you gotta get got into Civil War boring, you
gotta get the Winter Soldier in Civil War. First of
America was boring.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
Oh what do you know about Marvel?

Speaker 3 (11:13):
It was so boring. No, no, no, you have to
you have to get to the later ones. Give me
the later ones. And I'm there with you.

Speaker 7 (11:18):
I'm hit Mel Gibson. But what about the Patriot?

Speaker 3 (11:22):
That was too.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
It's a good one.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
So long Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yeah, that's a good one too. I mean if you're
the president, you also hunt vampires. I mean that's pretty full.

Speaker 6 (11:32):
I mean he was fighting against uh my man Malfoy
in the Patriots, so I mean, come on, oh.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
If you could defeat the Fed, the family Malfoy. Yeah, okay,
all right, I'm with you on that one. I'm with you.

Speaker 6 (11:43):
Never Jason Isaac shows up, it's going to be a party.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Come Draco, you had the big, long blonde hair.

Speaker 6 (11:48):
Yes, Eva, I mean, come on, everybody else is fighting,
and he says, I'm done.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, We're out, Twitter and out about a Fresco. Mike
at Swollen Dome, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon in for Doug Gottlieb.

(12:15):
Now this has just come in in the last couple
of minutes. As we'll get back to I got a
great Joey Chestnut game that we're gonna play later on this.
I have an awesome Joey Chestnut game, but it looks
like the Angels are going to have to navigate through
the trade deadline and beyond without Mike Trout, who was
just placed on the injured list by the Angels a

(12:37):
few minutes ago a fractured hammet bone in his wrist
from last night when he left the game after injuring
it on a swing. He said, you know what, it
doesn't feel good. These are injuries, according to Bob Nightingale,
that normally take four to eight weeks to heal. So
you're talking about the entirety of July and probably August
without Mike Trout, that the Angels have to stay afloat

(13:00):
and stay in playoff contention and order to keep show
Hao Tani actually with the team through the trade deadline.
Right now, the Angels three games over five hundred, so
they're in the thick of the wildcard chase. They're not
in a wildcard, but there are only three games behind.
There are a bunch of teams, a gaggle of teams
that are right around two, three, four, five games behind.
But this is now getting to be even more difficult

(13:22):
because if something happens here Mike and you get to
the end of the deadline, if the Angels wind up
losing a ton of games in a row. And it's
not like Mike Trout is having a typical Mike Trout
type season, but it's still you're missing Mike Trout if
suddenly they start losing and they fall out. Now you
wonder if forty five and forty two it turns into
seven games under five hundred at the deadline to suddenly

(13:44):
that makes show Heo Tani available that you know, that's
one of the big things coming out of this is
now it's July fourth, right, because we know this, Because
it's fourth of July, you have twenty seven more days
to stay in the race and stay afloat or you
have to look into we need to move on because
Otan he's walking away at the end. As long as
they're in contention, he's gonna stay. Right, They're not gonna

(14:04):
let him go. They're not gonna hey, yeah, we're three
years that now we gotta dump them. No, they will
keep him through the end of the year. That's not
that's not a question. But if they're not going to
do it, don't you kind of have to. So now
you got twenty seven days to show that you can
stay in the race. If you're the Angels.

Speaker 6 (14:17):
Yeah, it's the curiosity. We've talked about it for a while.
If you're viable and moving forward, and I think Moreno
and company they're there, resolve that they're not going to
be the team that trade him because what's commensurate value? Right,
Obviously the threat of losing him for nothing, Uh, that's
the all right, you put it on him to a degree,

(14:38):
because what are you gonna get here? Here's fifteen prospects
and one guy who's quasi major league ready or something
of that ill because is the type of trade you're
gonna end up getting back at this point. So do
you just hope that you've shown enough love and he
likes playing in Anaheim and and what's there? And obviously
a very tough situation losing Trout, as you said, not

(15:02):
having a typical Trout season, the schedule as we look
at it for the month of July, second half stuff
coming out of next week's break, Houston and the Yankees
get things started, then you have the Pirates and the
Tigers Toronto and you'll be starting a series with Atlanta

(15:23):
when you've got to make that decision ultimately of whatever
deal might be proffered. But certainly it changes the math
on this, at least to where it becomes that much
of a consideration again, whereas two weeks ago it seemed, hey,
it's done, he'll finish the year and we'll go forward.
At least have to take calls and see what's offered.

(15:45):
But again, trying to find something that's commensurate with the player.
You're just getting rid of him for the sake of
getting rid of him. I'd rather take my shot and
then lose him in free agency if that's the way
it works, because there's only going to be several teams
you're competing with on that front.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Eight seven, seven ninety nine On Fox eight seven seven
nine nine six sixty three six nine, Jason Smith Mike
Harmon in for Doug Gottlieb today. Coming up next, we'll
break down all the latest and NBA free agency. Did
the Lakers really do the best job out of anybody?
What could be next for James Harden? What could be next?
As we look, Nick in to stop putting that out

(16:23):
in the universe, It's not gonna happen. Stop, stop all
of you at James Harden to the next. No oh no, no, no, no, no, Chrispy.
No no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no,
not happening. No, I'm gonna keep saying no to get
that to Negate your You're putting that out in the No. No, no, no, no,
not happening, not happening. No, God please, no, no, what

(16:43):
is next? As we look at James Harden and others
in NBA free agency? Keep it right here. Happy fourth
of July. This is Fox Sports Radio.

(17:31):
still amazed at Joey Chestnuts saving the fourth of July
sixty two. Hot Dogs two once again Roll two the
Nathan's hot dog eating title owner of the mustard Belt.
We also have big news an NBA free agency joining
us now in the hotline to break it down. Nobody
better than a man who I don't know if I'm
going out in a limb here with a hot take.

(17:51):
He may have the tweet of free agency so far
as after Malik Beasley signing a day ago, Dan Wiki,
La Times, NBA Inside or Extraordinaire put out this bit
of info that I'll never forget the time Malik Beasley's
kid came into the Lakers locker room, took a piece
of ice out of a d's foot bucket and went
to eat it while everyone in the room yelled no,

(18:14):
he didn't eat the ice. Another reminder that it truly
takes a village that's like buddy the ice drop into
his knees, going no. And now we bring in the
man the offense of that tweet. It is Dan Waki.
What's up, dub guys.

Speaker 8 (18:29):
It was a maybe one of my top five favorite
moments of last season seeing that happen. Adorable, adorable little
boy waddling into the locker room, going around giving every
high five, and then you see, if I can, like
and here's the thing, Like people thought like, oh, you're
dragging the kids and stuff. No, like that is what
a three year old would do. When I growing up

(18:52):
in in Chicago, there was a sports far named the
Charlie Horse great sports far name, and I remember very
vividly going there with my father, going to the bathroom
and seeing a trough full of ice and thinking, oh wow,
unlimited ice. Not aware that this was some sort of

(19:13):
flush saving measure. I didn't know I was stopped because again,
it takes a village the trough.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Yeah, I think the one thing that was missing was
the age of the kid. Like I think like people
actually that his thirty four year old kid came in,
I'm gonna start eating nice? Why not? Because I ain't
ie not I can kue that it was probably a
little kid, but you know, maybe that's what it was.
But I think you won free agency with that tweet.
That's the best tweet of free agency for well.

Speaker 8 (19:41):
I think Fred van Zwiet might have one up on me.
But you know, I think there's a couple other guys
that I would probably trade places within free agency I.

Speaker 6 (19:51):
Would say Van Vleet and Halliburton are the two pros
that really got it right, with Halliburton using the million
dollar man.

Speaker 8 (19:58):
Oh well his I mean, who knew that Tyrese Haliburton
was such a was such just a just a wonderful tweeter.
I mean I probably should have known. Yeah, I say this,
and I know this is America's Day, the fourth of July.
I just hope he doesn't just like waste away Indiana.
I hope we like, really enjoy this guy.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
Indiana's America's heartland. What is wrong with you? Dan Wyke?
What is the fourth of July?

Speaker 8 (20:23):
Man's real quick words are for I love that you
guys played me in with Sports and Son very high
in my my favorite list of songs that sound patriotic
that just probably really aren't that patriotic.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
It was more than Forrest Gump. Callback But but no,
I get it with that. I get it. I get
it with that.

Speaker 8 (20:43):
So I have one other story for you guys. I
have one other story for you guys. Just kind of realated.
I think you guys will enjoy this eating ice again.
I know it's about America's heartland. During the NBA playoffs
this year, I went and saw John Mellencamps perform in Memphis,
tennis see, right, And while we were with with a
couple of other reporters, and while we were in line

(21:06):
to get a drink like in the theater, this gentleman
comes up and slaps one of us on the back
and says, your boys from Indiana and so now so everywhere,
one one of the guys I was with us from
Cleveland goes, I'm from Cleveland, and the guy goes Cleveland,
which one Tennessee or Mississippi. Yeah, I just want to say,

(21:29):
I am no coastal elite. I got I understood what
exactly what you're talking about? And yeah, anyways, did.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
You say no? The other one? He said no?

Speaker 8 (21:38):
The other one Cleveland, Texas?

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Yeah, Cleveland, Cleveland, Texas. I'm actually my name is Cleveland.
I'm sorry. I'm Grover Cleveland. I was former president and
a pitcher. Well I forget all right. So hey, so
as we get ready here in free agency, everybody's everybody's
wondering what's gonna happen with Damian Lillard. The Lakers made
a lot of great moves. Uh, what are you here? What?
What do you think it is going to happen, it's
all said and done.

Speaker 8 (22:01):
I mean, it certainly seems like he's going to land
in Miami, and I question that. I question how good
that is for the Blazers. I have a hard time
thinking that that is the best possible deal out there.
I think they're well within their rights to create Damian
Lillard to any franchise that they want. That they owe

(22:24):
it to themselves and their fans to get the best
possible deal. But this isn't about SPIKEE. But this isn't
about loyalty. Like they've shown loyalty. You want to know
how they've shown loyalty. Damian Lillard's gonna make nine thousand
million dollars, you know, over the life of this contract,
like they gave him that deal. He's going to make

(22:44):
sixty million dollars in a couple of years. Like no,
hyperbolieve like that. That's that's the loyalty, right If that
means you have to play basketball in the city that's
not Miami, like I'm sorry, like you know, and I'm sorry,
Like we have to do with right for us, and
I think that should be their focus and their goal.

(23:05):
But it does that they have been incredibly loyal to
day May at every step. You know, like what they
will try to do is similar to what happened with
Anthony Davis, and there's a little bit of a different
situation because Anthony Davis had its contract leverage, and like,
I won't sign there, I won't sign there. But I mean,
you know, when you're hearing things like sport that David
Lille only wants to play in Miami and stuff like that,

(23:27):
I mean, I just I don't know. I would hate
for It's made me not want to see him end
up the Sea. I would like Portland to shop him
and get a better deal. I mean, maybe the best
deal is from Miami. I doubt it. I think there's
a better deal to be had from Brooklyn. I think
there's a better deal potent should be had from Boston.

(23:50):
Maybe there's a better deal to be had from San
Antonio or Utah or you know, any of those places
and more. And I really hope they end up doing it.
But I mean, they're really they really signaled Miami, and
Miami's really cut up for it, and they've been setting
up for this for a couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Now.

Speaker 8 (24:12):
Seems like the path of East result.

Speaker 6 (24:13):
Yeah, just give him a rocking chair and send him
on his way. So I asked this from my friend
Jason Smith. Here is James Harden more likely to become
a Clipper.

Speaker 8 (24:22):
Or a Nick Clipper?

Speaker 3 (24:25):
All right? Dan Blakey, Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan
Dan h Shunk.

Speaker 8 (24:31):
I mean I just think that, you know, again, speaking
of Marcus sizes and stuff like that, and and I'm sorry,
market for a player, it just seems like, again like
the Clippers of the team that that where this will land,
or Philadelphia quite frankly, I mean, it does seem like
this could be repaired to in that way. But but

(24:51):
I just I don't know. The people I've talked to
him said that Nix and christ is maybe a little overstated.
He's certainly divisive. I mean, he's a divisive player, right,
Like thirty front offices about James Harden, including the sixers,
You're gonna hear sixty opinions. You know, it just is
that's that's the truth, right, Like, I mean, there are
people who loves the way he plays basketball and want

(25:14):
nothing to do with him, and then there are people
who look at him and see his you know, I
mean the analytics and the statistics, and you know, he
wins you a ton of regular season games with the
way he plays. He can close the game. He's a
comment dispasser, you know, and still has some offensive punch.
But I just it seems to me like the Clippers

(25:35):
in the landing spot. They are pretty far down their road,
and like Phoenix, when you're in that situation, like you
can you know, I mean, you can just kind of
keep pressing. I think I think that's sort of way.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
You do it.

Speaker 8 (25:52):
It seems weird to be like to try your line
in the sand. Now you know, a new building and
angle opening next year and say, you know what, that's
we're not trying. It keeps through the time that you
really put your foot to the gat and so I
think they'll eventually do what they need to do to
get this done. If the trade ever materializes. That's not
I would, you know, I think there's a real chance
he hands up second.

Speaker 3 (26:12):
So Dan Wiki, La Times NBA Insider, our guest here
on Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon, All right, now,
the Lakers added approximately twenty three players to their roster
in the last four days of free agency, a lot,
and you know, not as many power forwards as I
would have liked.

Speaker 8 (26:28):
But you know what, this is what we get, said
Tats Skipson.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
How dare they have they done enough to close the
gap with the Nuggets or anybody else who might be
at the top of the Western Conference.

Speaker 8 (26:42):
Honestly, No, I want you to lie to us here.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Aerdy told us you don't like Indiana. I mean, come on,
keep telling the truth now.

Speaker 8 (26:50):
I don't think so. I mean, I think like this
answer has nuanced, right. I think they did about as
good as they could do, and I think a lot
is going to have to go right for them to
beat the next Nuggets Cow worse. And I think that's helpful.
I think that that kind of brings them back to
the gap, the closes the gap a little bit. I mean,
I think Phoenix did a really good job, you know.
I like generally what Memphis has done so far. I mean,

(27:14):
we'll see where Dallas is at. I think the West
can be pretty good. But yeah, no, I mean I
liked the Lakers had limited mechanisms. They had two really
stated goals, and it was to retain their young players
and improve on the fringes, right, and so they used
you know, the rights that they had to to retain

(27:35):
you know, Austin Reeves. They you know, they played the
strict to freegency. Really while they suppressed his market, they
made it so like there really wasn't an opportunity for
a team to overpay him. They signaled they would match anyway,
so he didn't get an offer. They keep him at
a great number. They've resigned Dangels, Russell at a good number,
an easy contract, potentially trade if they need to later

(27:56):
ruey Hotch Murram. Maybe a smitch of an overpay, but
you know, he's played really well for them, and I
know they think highly of him. And then you go
out in sort of the other ends of free agency,
and you know, Gabe Vincent is, you know, coming off
of starting in the NBA finals, you know, tough minded,
two way player. Torrian Flint is a good shooter with

(28:17):
good size, and you know, seems like the kind of
player that would succeed around Lebron James. And then you
you hit the minimum market a little bit, you take
some swings cam brettish Jackson as you know, young players
kind of what they did last year with Ronnie Walker
and Troy Brown, like kind of lottery level talents who
didn't get extended and maybe and Ruey hotch Mura by

(28:38):
the way, on that list too, and then you you
take a swing at those guys and maybe hit and
I and I think they got better. But you know,
it's just it's we've we've had this conversation guys with
five years SA like right, like, you know, everything hinges
on Lebron James and Anthony Davis being healthy. And I
mean that's not a Joey Chestnut level safe.

Speaker 6 (28:56):
Bet nicely done because those people eventually get to cash.

Speaker 8 (29:01):
Out for It's more like it's more like betting on
eater X.

Speaker 6 (29:06):
Instead of racer X.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
I like that.

Speaker 6 (29:08):
Well that's good. We we we the randomness uh thrown
there in? Did you get all excited about Summer League starting? Oh?

Speaker 8 (29:16):
Guys, you know I would never be one to smirk
someone else in the media. I will say, I did
hear the terms heat culture mentioned too many times for
my liking Duris during a Summer League broadcast.

Speaker 6 (29:27):
What was the over under? What did you what did
you set it at? And how early did it cash?

Speaker 8 (29:32):
It was like Joey Chestnuts, okay, all right, it is
like you take the heat, you take the culture. You
spread it apart, you dip them both in water and
then shove them out there. I think, no, it was fun.
I mean it was fun to see chat back on
the court, and I think, you know, like it went
about the way you'd expect it to a little rusty,

(29:53):
you know, and then you plan it. I would I
would caution everyone with Summer League to take a deep breath.
You know, generally speaking, Summer League results some league play
that doesn't always tie into how a player will perform
in the NBA. I think the way that I tend
to watch Summer League guys is like you look for
like you want the flashes right, like you want to

(30:15):
see you know, like a two Hinda black room chat
where like gets his legs underneath him and you're like,
oh yeah, okay, like all right, that's good. You know
he's getting you know, he's playing with a little more
confidence you want to see. You know, when I watched
Dylan or just what the Lakers the other day, it
was like about how he controlled pace. I was like, oh, yeah,
I see that, like you know, like the shot making
needs work, like obviously right, Like and see the same

(30:38):
thing with Brandon Millerson with a decision making needs work
on the court, you know, and that stuff will come
through time. But but yeah, no, I mean I like
I generally like summer league guys. I like seeing coaches
and shorts and soolos is a great look, you know,
real relaxed and uh and it's it's fun to see

(30:58):
the Uh. It's fun to see the established NBA stars
like roll through. Usually it happens in Vegas only the
first weekend, and then it's sort of like like the
guys who show up we KND won are like your
headliners and then like you know, it gradually like moves
like up, like up the card a little the middle
of the week. But yeah, no, it's a good time

(31:20):
and it's basketball and it'll be fun over your acts us.

Speaker 3 (31:25):
Joy when you can get a respected member of the
media with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, someone who
has been honored by the Pro Basketball Writers Association to
tell you in an interview, do you want me to
lie to you?

Speaker 7 (31:36):
It is.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
There?

Speaker 8 (31:40):
They're winning it all.

Speaker 3 (31:41):
Yeah, Lakers are back and they beat Indiana. Right, they
beat Indiana, right, there would.

Speaker 8 (31:47):
Be the papers and three can be like they're gonna
make them say Mattey can be like a full blood
foot situation.

Speaker 3 (31:59):
We'll tell you awesome stuff, Dan boy, Why me to
lie to you? Yes, I watch you to lie to me?
And now a guy who's never gonna lie to you
because it would be a lot of trouble because he's
supposed to give the right and score. It's Isaac Lowan
Crown who's got what's trending in the wide world.

Speaker 5 (32:12):
Of sports, especially fellas, because we've got such huge Major
League Baseball news today. Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trott
has been diagnosed with a broken left wrist and has
been placed on the injured list. And get this, the
reeling San Diego Padres have just designated veteran DH Nelson
Cruz four assignment. Earlier today, the Cincinnati Reds one in

(32:36):
Washington eight to four. Rookie Ellie day La Cruz went
four for four, so did Spencer Steers. Cincinnati's Jonathan India
homered in back to back at bats.

Speaker 6 (32:46):
Right now, the.

Speaker 5 (32:46):
Yankees a four to three lead over the Orioles headed
to the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite Aaron Hicks
homering against his former team in Miami, The Marlins now
lead the Cardinals eleven to nothing at the top of
the eighth, The Texas is a six to one lead
over the Red Sox at Fenway in the top of
the eighth, and the Minnesota Twins up six to two
over the Kansas City Royals in the bottom half of

(33:08):
the sixth inning. Elsewhere in the annual tragic commentary on
our society known as Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
You need to do this, in the Paxton Whitehead voice
of in the Hot Dog Eating Contest, mister Melon.

Speaker 5 (33:26):
You have speaking of America. You Jason, have turned America
against me. After your withering criticism earlier. My mentions are
now full of hot dog loving trolls, including one individual
who tweeted at me quote, You're the worst, worst spelled
with a you.

Speaker 3 (33:47):
Ah. There you go see that. Now you know you've
made it. You've made it isac loh and kron.

Speaker 5 (33:52):
Anyway, Joey Chestnut won the Gentleman's Division by eating sixty
two hot dogs. In fact, fellas, here is how it
sounded when Chestnut polished off his final dog. Oops, sorry, guys,

(34:16):
I pressed the wrong button there. That was actually Joe
Buck's call of Mark maguire hitting number sixty two in
the memorable nineteen ninety eight season.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
Anyway, I was gonna say that crowd of Coney Island
sounded real, much bigger crowd than you see on TV.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
Absolutely, it must have been a sellout.

Speaker 5 (34:32):
Anyway, for Chestnut, it was his eighth straight win and
his sixteenth overall. When asked for comment, Chestnut said, oh ho,
hord wrong anyway, on that note back to you, we.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Went over this. It's American hero Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 6 (34:52):
We went over there coming on the show now legend, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
I forget it now now him and the Mustard Belton.

Speaker 5 (35:00):
You guys are relishing every bit of the aftermath of
chestnuts victory.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
Thank you very much. I love appreciate it. We have
the Joey Chestnut game coming up in about fifteen minutes.
Stuff that I found that I can't I can't wait
to play this game. But straight ahead. Hey, oh by
the way, speaking of NBA and free agency, do we
have something to tell you about that happened last night?
This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Be sure to
catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays
at three pm Eastern noon Pacific.

Speaker 1 (35:42):
Hey, I'm Doug Gottlieb. The podcast is called All Ball.
We usually talk all basketball all the time, but it's
more about the stories about what made these people love
their sport and all the interesting interactions along the way.
We talked to coaches, we talked to players, We tell
you stories. You download it, you listened to it.

Speaker 3 (36:01):
I think you like it.

Speaker 1 (36:02):
Listen to All Ball with Doug Gottlieb on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Fox Sports Radio. It is a Doug Gottlieb Show. Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon in for Doug today and coming up in
twenty five minutes, we'll get into a couple of big
injuries in Major League Baseball. Clayton Kirsher now Mike Trout.
We now know how long he's gonna be out, and
it's gonna be quite a while. No, but we saw
something last night in Summer League that we saw last

(36:35):
year for all too briefly. We saw Chet on the
floor again. Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City star who of course
took Summer League by Storm. Look at this, the guy
is gonna block ten shots a game and hit threes.
He's gonna set the world on its ear. Foot injury
kept him out last year, returns and has a pretty

(36:56):
big night fifteen points, nine boards, four blocks. You see
a lot of his highlights have been trending on social
media over the course of the last few hours. It
looks very much like it was last year, and certainly
he and Wembin Yama are the guys that everybody's got
their eye on. Look At how unbelievably talented these guys are.
As big men, you know, these are seven footers that

(37:17):
are all that. Both run the floor like Giannis and
may wind up being better than Yannis when it's all
said and done. But they both have something in common.
Might that you know. We talked about this with Webbin Yama,
and I feel like we have to extend this to Holmgrid,
is that they should both be on strict minutes restrictions
for the season, right because the fan bases for both

(37:37):
of these teams, they're just happy they have them, right,
And it doesn't matter, Okay, if we're if we're we're
not thinking we're gonna win the title this year. But
we're happy to have exciting players. We like watching and
seeing them play. The number one thing is you got
to make sure these guys whose bodies are not quite
NBA bang around for sixty five games a season that

(37:57):
they get there. Now, Holmegren's put on some weight from
last year, which is good, but still this is gonna
be his first go round, and you want to make
sure that guys like Homegren and Webbin Yama they get
into the league and they don't wind up getting hurt
early because it's too much too soon. I would almost
say that they should have like a twenty minute restriction
per night to start the season, and then it goes

(38:19):
up incrementally as as the year goes on, just to
get them used to playing in sixty sixty five games.
Not only have these guys not done that, they also
haven't played, you know, a schedule like this Homegroun hasn't
played in the year, and when Ben Yama's playing schedule,
the professional schedule in France and everything else, no one's
done that. They haven't had the rigors of that yet.
So I would almost say you got to do that,

(38:39):
give you that strict ten minutes in the first half,
ten minutes in the second half, you got to call
a time out to let him out, get him out
of the game. You call a time out and get
him out of the game.

Speaker 6 (38:46):
Well, certainly got to see a little bit. And as
we talk with Dan Woiki, right, you don't get over excited, right,
you try not to about what you see in summer league,
but it does wet the appetite for what could be
and home grin a guy on both of the court
with that aptitude. Now he's already got the foot injury
in the wrong column.

Speaker 3 (39:05):
Right.

Speaker 6 (39:06):
We always talk about big guys and their limbs, their
joints and making sure you're protecting there and hoping the
body fills out sooner rather than later. But go back
to the beginning of Joel Embiid's career, there were a
lot of questions was he going to be able to
make it? Well, now he's the defending league MVP. Who
wants to play with them? That's a whole other question.
But when we look at minutes, restrictions, load management all

(39:30):
for it. You know, when Ben Yama is schedule in France,
they played forty four games, you're still almost doubling that
and if you make the playoffs, so all bets are
off right. As for Oklahoma City, they're an interesting roster,
a lot of young talent there, led by Gilgess Alexander,
but curious as to what the overall goals are of

(39:53):
trying to push because this guy could be a good
one for a good decade plus. Don't want to potentially
for that relapse so soon.

Speaker 3 (40:01):
Yeah, I don't think anybody's gonna care. Yeah, I don't
think anybody's gonna care. Oh what are you doing with
this guy? No, we've seen so many big men get hurt.

Speaker 4 (40:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (40:09):
I think they got the guys in the locker room
that are looking at their basketball montality too though. Yeah,
but well let's say I want to play for something.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
Yeah but okay, Well you're in Oklahoma City and San Antonio,
two bottom feeder teams, right, Let's be honest. They're looking
to find their way back. This is kind of what
this year is going to be. We can't we can't
go crazy and as time goes on and they can
merit more playing time. Yeah, sure, let's do it. But
we know what the goals are, and that's to make
sure this guy is healthy and he's a lynchpin for
us for a decade plus when we start winning championship.

(40:38):
It's not gonna happen this year.

Speaker 6 (40:39):
Yeah, I want that Jordan return right where it was.
Fourteen minutes, fifteen minutes, sixteen minutes. All right, you're up
to thirty two minutes. Let's go yeah yeah, yeah, but
I'm really like two weeks to ramp. Come on telling
you for chet and and wem Bin Yama needs a
new nickname. I mean, Wemby is not.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
A great nickname, the big fragile. Stop with that for
your just jealous. Uh coming up next, boy, do we
have a game for you. We're gonna play the Joey
Chestnut game. Keep it right here. This is Fox
