after falling in the layup line. We have big stuff
with John Rant of the Day after for Lamar Jackson,
Aaron Rodgers. But I gotta be honest. If I don't

(01:06):
curse on the show tonight, I'll never curse. I shouldn't
say that. You never say if I don't curse on
the show tonight, likely I will never curse on the show.
Jim Beheim is out at my alma mater after forty
seven seasons and a loss, say to Wake Forrest in
their opening game of the ACC Tournament. Already a college

(01:27):
Basketball Hall of Famer, they lose on the buzzer beater,
which was just insane, which I'll tell honestly, if I
lost gay, if I was seventy four, seventy five, seventy six,
seventy seven years old, seventy eight years old and I
lost a game like Syracuse lost today, where some some
average player hits a turnaround Michael Jordan twisting in the

(01:48):
air jumper to tie a game defense he does, didn't
play defense, and then there's a desperation three that's just
chucked up at the buzzer to win. Yeah, I'd probably
walk away too. I'd say, you know what, I can't
I can't deal with these losses. I mean, that was
just that was just punching the gut. And then a
few hours later, Jim Beheim is no longer the head

(02:08):
coach at Syracuse. I walked into Syracuse as a freshman
in the fall of nineteen eighty eight. Already Beheim had
been there a dozen years, and he was coming off
a Final four appearance, the loss in the championship game
to Indiana on the last second shot, the Keith Smart
shot that you see everywhere. I got to explain who

(02:30):
Keith Smart is to millennials. It's okay, and he was
a legend. Then hey, here we are in the Final four.
We're there in the championship game. We were one possession
away from winning the championship. I walked in there as
a seventeen year old, and he was already larger than life.
I'm fifty two now, I am fifty two, fifty two
and Ben out I know, I'm a grown ass man.

(02:53):
And this is how Beheim now is out after thirty
five more years at Syracuse, Beheim goes out. And this
is why I say about never cursing, because for a guy,
for whatever you want to say about him, we'll get well.
We'll talk about Syracuse in the direction of the program
and how they've not fared well in recent years. A
losing year last year and maybe no postseason this year.

(03:16):
Although if you're the n I T you're like, we
are room for Jim Beheim in the NI field. We
can It'll be a pretty big story a lot of
people watching TV. Jim. For him to go out like this, right,
this is not how Hall of Famers go out. I
don't care if it was difficult. I don't care if
Beheim didn't want to go. I don't care if you
pushed him out. You figure out a better way to

(03:39):
say goodbye and part with a guy who was your
program for forty seven bleeping years. You figure out a
way for guy who won a national championship and went
to seven final fours? That what fifteen Big East championships?
You find a better way than Beheim at a press
conference today saying that, hey, if you paid attention, I
gave my retirement speech last week. Nobody picked up on it.

(03:59):
Wait what you're retiring? So, Jim, you're retiring. No, it's
not my decision. It's the university's decision. But wait, you
said you gave your retirement speech. You're retiring. No, it's
the university's decision. And then he's out, and there's no
announcement of his retirement. It's just he won't be returning
as Syracuse's head coach. How does today unfold? Like this

(04:20):
for that kind of fore legend, I really I'm a Frostburg.
I mean it is. You listen to it from Bayheim's
own mouth. Following the game, when the I won't be
returning as Syracuse head coach storyline started to pick up. Well,
I gave my retirement speech on the court last Saturday,
and I gave it in the press conference afterwards, and
nobody except will and William Paynes figured it out right

(04:43):
now that you're you're going to retire, this is up
to the university. You want to come back. I didn't
say that, okay, So what are you saying. You're not
saying you're retiring. I just said it. I don't know,
So you don't know, okay. I said, this is up
to the university. Day right now that it's you, you're
going to retire, This is up to the university you
want to come back. I didn't say that. How will

(05:05):
you make a determination about when you will come back?
You're talking I'm the dude, I'm Ron Burgundy that starts
waiting for the end. How is that how it goes?
That's an exchange with Donna Datta, who is a longtime
Syracuse beat reporter who covers Syrius, Syracuse dot com, Syracuse
Post entered the newspaper. Think about that. This is how
Beheim goes out. You want to come back. I didn't

(05:25):
say that you're retiring. Ask them, how is it this contentious?
I don't care. Look, I understand if guys get pushed out, right,
this is how it goes in the world of sports.
You age and you become someone who, Hey, are you
still the leader of the program or are you holding
the program back if you hang on too long? This
is how it goes. I understand that. I get that

(05:47):
part of it. But if you wanted to push Beheim out,
you got to figure out a way to do it
better than that. You got to figure out a way
to say, we are going to be able to give
a huge thank you to the coach. We're going to
have some kind of um some guy not a party
or a celebration or why not? Right, have a go.

(06:07):
I'll go right down South Salina Street and Syracuse all
the bars I used to go to therese yes, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
they're great streets, man, you get it anywhere. Yeah, It's
just Syracuse is great. Uh, It's really built for a
lot of shortcuts. To get to places, you know, to
take the freeway nowhere. Uh well, yes, Syracuse kind of
was the road to nowhere, and I got out. But
you figure out a way to make it not this,

(06:30):
because however you feel Beheim was hanging out to he
was Syracuse basketball. He was the rock star of rock
star head coaches in college basketball. We don't talk about
a lot of guys like we talked about Jim Beheim.
We talked about coach k and and Beheim. They were
the big guys once in a while, John Calipari, we
get our attention, not for a while, but Beheim was

(06:51):
always someone who stirred the pot and was a big personality,
was the big personal The guy coached USA basketball, he
coached the Olympics. And this is how we go was
out with a crazy ass backwards press conference where it's
like an Aben Costello routine where it's who's on first.
This is how you couldn't figure it out better. I
don't care that if oh it's got messy, it it
was this because Beeheim maybe he didn't want to go back.

(07:12):
I don't care. If you figure out a better way
than that. And if this is a way, oh well,
he's gonna go out and say what he wants to say.
You figure out a way to lead that and say, hey,
jim Is, let's figure out something you needed to do
better jobs. So it didn't end today like this with
that kind of back and forth of you want to
come back. I didn't say that. He didn't say he
wanted to come back to a university he never left.

(07:34):
He walked on campus as a freshman, played for the
team there, never like that's what he always says. I
walked on as a freshman. I've never left forty you know,
more than fifty years ago. This is what he was
able to do, and you can't find a better way
to figure that out. I'm just so pissed that this
is how it goes down. Forget about what he accomplished
and didn't accomplish the last few years. That's a stop.

(07:54):
I'm gonna take your ass, Frostburg and you and you too,
harm at both of you garnments out the press of
everything I ever hoped it would be. I'm gonna bang
your heads together. This is well, you know what Comania's
in a couple of weeks, skulls, you know exactly. I
get that every coach doesn't get away to write his

(08:15):
own ticket out, doesn't get to retire the way. But
he had it and he didn't take it right. But
so I understand. But even before that, several years ago,
hey I'm leaving. No I'm not really gonna leave, but
this you had your opportunity. So this time, if you
were sticking your feet in the saying come take me on, blank,
you you're gone. You just you look awful that you

(08:36):
can't send your forty seven year head coach off. Better
than that, Better than a ridiculous press conference where it
sounds like he's pissed and a forty seven year affiliation
with the university is ending like this. I mean, come on, man,
that this this is us enough? How you do it?
It's not you and I'm sorry, but yeah, this is
some of the tough decisions you get paid for. Because
you know it stopped me for a second. I think

(08:58):
you knew if you were chance or can't Sever or
anybody else that boy Jim Beheim leaving. If it's gonna
be ornery, it's we're gonna look bad. Let's figure out
a way to handle it. This is what you get
paid for, man, This is this is one you get
paid for to make those big time decisions where hey,
where the coaches being he doesn't want to come back.
We don't know. You get You get paid to make
sure this goes smoother. And that didn't happen. And that

(09:21):
makes me really pissed because this is a guy that
gave everything to Syracuse. He gave absolutely everything. And and
there's not many guys like that who would stay for
that long and stay and continue to go through and
have a coaching tree and all kinds of stuff going
on and send countless guys in the NBA. Uh, you
find a better way. Yeah, it's we know. Everybody gets everybody,
everybody gets paid. It doesn't matter. I mean folks denied

(09:42):
it for many many years. I mean, look at looking
around our town where we broadcast from Fellas. Folks still
want to put their heads in the sand and just
talk about greatness like no, no, no no, no, no, it
all comes together. Let's put everything in a great big
hug as to how you put together championship runs and
dynasties in our his street. For Beyheim, he had the opportunity,
like he had ample opportunities to leave. I'll never believe

(10:05):
he didn't right, so he chose to stay there. Fine.
When it was looking like it was the end several
years ago, we were on air talking about it. It
was awkward at that point because there was no endgame
on it, and what do you do that is all
you've known, it's forty seven years. This is where shut
This is where the administration to some degree, and I

(10:27):
understand your angst, but this is one where where your
heart's going to get in the way of your head
to a degree, Jason is that he's Beheim, which means
they can handle it a little less soft gloves than
it might be another coach. Why because this guy's brought
it on himself with the way he's handled people and
handled things at pressers, including student reporters, and it's he's

(10:51):
had a number of bad looks in that nothing in
terms of huge scandal, truly, you know, and through through
the years, as much as we may ride you on
the paying of Carmelo, you got your title and move on.
But it's the kind of thing that for for Bay him,
it seemed like there was going to be more of
the I'll leave when I'm ready, because that was the

(11:12):
quote earlier in the year, right, whatever he said last
week or two weeks ago. Yeah, I slyly put it
in Ye beat it. You basically said, you're taking my
coaching job from my cold, dead hand. And you know what,
they decided they weren't going to wait that long, and
they came and got it off of a lackluster season.
Another one tied for eighth last year, ninth year before that,

(11:33):
eighth year before that, tied for six, tied for seven.
Time for tap to want to keep going? No, I mean,
it's a long way back to twenty thirteen, but this
is where and I understand all of that, and I
get the pushing out and I get that because I look,
I'm sad and I'm optimistic because you know, I like
going to the NCAA tournament. I like having big runs
and not just every three years. Maybe we're good enough
to squeak in and have a sweet sixteen. The guy

(11:55):
gave you one national championships, the King. You know how
many but just my teams have had in my fifty
two years on Earth. That's a really valid point. That's like,
that's like a quarter of them. I'll back out, he squeeze.
I mean, you know, you talk about the pressure and
squeezing and clenching and all that creating diamonds. Yeah, that's

(12:15):
what you got here. Like like the King five Final
four appearances in forty seven years, that's that's crap. Forty
seven years. Yeah, but it's not just winning, it's it's
the final four. Because he's been there for forty seven years.
He's got a hundred more they took away because oh,
guy didn't take a class. Oh it taken the class.
He should have at least had a proxy. I get.

(12:37):
I mean, it wasn't a dope at his lunch table
that he couldn't have given five bucks here, you get
some of my meal pay. Hey, hey, go take a
bag of serial with it. That's your payment. He didn't
pick up the phone and wish you a happy birthday though,
when I when I called him, so I gotta I
gotta say he did he did. He did not do that.
It was actually jerk face. Okay, okay, okay, let's let's
stop before I want to punch both of you more. Uh. Look,

(12:59):
I understand I understand the the you know, the pushing out,
and he's going to be ornery. He doesn't want to
go I understand that, but this is your university, and
this is where well, I'm just the chancellor, I'm just
the athletic director, I'm just John Wildhack. I'm just I
don't know, I'm just a guy. No, this is where
it's Hey, Jim, this is what's happening. Now. We can
either make this really good and we can we can

(13:20):
do this, or we cannot. We can fill because I
fail to see how they couldn't have figured this out
going on, right, They couldn't have don't know one hundred
percent that they didn't try. Jason right, But no, no,
there's no try do or do not. No, there is
no Yoda yoda. That's not the case. You figure out
forty seven years you what do you want? How to
bring it an nostalgic salty after a loss? Hey, Jim,

(13:43):
congratulations on a job done. We got your own. And
here's a giant bucket of ice cream Rocky Road, your
favorite Rocky Road ice cream. No, I'm sorry, that's what
you get paid for. You get paid to figure this
out and not make it be the blank shows. It's
bigger than Syracuse. Yeah, he's Have you said to me

(14:06):
college bad? Have you said to any college basketball fan
other than the coach who coaches your team. Give me
one coach who's coaching right now in college basketball. The
second name outside of Mick Cronin or tomizz the second
name is Jim Beheim. Well, that just means your program
is a sorry out program. But that means you've been
around forever, and you got a guy who's loud and

(14:27):
when he's mad at reporters and threatens them or yells
at them and whatever, that it makes some news. Why
because we're entertained because he's the last of the crotchety
old guys. Yeah, you get some guys, but but look
at the rest of the other coaches. What did they
all do? They begged out because nil We had JR.
Tolver On talking about initiatives and resistance from older coaches

(14:48):
last night right Coach K's talked about it. I got this.
Remember Dabo was supposed to retire when guys started getting paid.
Still see him collecting his huge check. This is the
last of those guys. That was all surly because right now,
if you've asked an average person that what they know
about the NFL, they think Derek Carr is God because
everybody's talking about him. Just because they talk about him,

(15:08):
and they know his name doesn't mean he's any good anymore.
I told you that about Derek Rum with you on
the Derek Carr part of it, and may huh No,
now you'll stop at that. You shut up. It's gonna
be live drop Wednesday, the harmon you shut up, gonna
say that you on, you shut up. Tell me I'm
wrought up, tell me tell me I'm wrong without it
being your emotions and your Syracuse degree clouding your judgment.

(15:31):
Look into your heart. You know it to be true.
One national champion had Fitzgerald is overrated. Hebage. Can you
know both of you just stop and you by guys
both just no, it's a hell of a run, you guys.
He had the up name. Look justin whatever you get done,
understand any in any job I'll stipulate to if you're

(15:51):
in and look, there's obviously others where it just means
they couldn't hire anybody else. That's all you know, you
shut up. You all you shut up is that you're
there a long time. I respect the aptitude, I respect
the continuity and all of that because we we championed
that in all of these other programs. What do we
talk about in the NFL to start with anything, either

(16:12):
I'm complaining that the line sucks or I'm talking about
how they're too fickle with their gms and coaches, so
there's never a continuity in a direction for more than
twelve to twenty four months. Here, Yeah, you got forty
seven years, but it was as yeah, five six that
it was done, that it was done, and that he
was done. But he didn't want to go out right,

(16:32):
he named his successor. How many guys get to name
That's good? Harmon's done. Cut him off, cut him off.

Harmon right there. Shut up? Coming up next. Yeah, we'll
have more on Beheim, more on the biggest developments coming

I mean it's I mean, Behand has been been my
coach for forty seven year forty seven years. Get I
get him. Look, it's an emotional day. And that's how
you treat him, even that's how you people treat him.

(17:55):
I mean, for him to say stuff like the university
hasn't offered me anything, whether to work or do anything
at the university. That's their choice. That's a And he says,
I gave my retirement speech, but you're not retired. But
did you retire? No, it's their choice. I'm not coming back.
It's how do you how do you have that guy?
It's like, how about he shows a little bit of
a boy and an adult and not being a petulant

(18:16):
child in front of a micrope. So, wow, look how
mad you are? I'm not mad at all. I'm just saying,
like he has, you're trying to bury the university, and
I'm not going to say that they look great in this.
I do like an adult stand stand. I even got
that underground podcast you did, whisk uh. It's it's the

(18:39):
case of just like a team in free agency, you
could have a guy who is very much of a
handful right, being a difficult guy to coach, but the
guy's a superstar. And how a guy believes a team
in free agency, in in Major League Baseball or the
NFL or NBA? Does it alway? Does that guy look bad? No?
It can come down where you couldn't handle this guy,

(19:00):
You couldn't win with him. How do you how do
you not screw How do you screw that up? When
you add these grants? It's like we talk about the nets.
How did you screw it up with with those three spy.
They were all great played. How did you do it?
Like Ahei'm not winning with all those recruits right now?
He did this? I'm sorry. You have zero basketball tradition
at year Alma monity. I don't that I don't, but
you're you're but you're playing it off like he's riding

(19:23):
off into the sunset and they're mistreating him when he's
winning conferences and dominated he's leaving. The being able to
leave you should be he should be able to dictate
not the terms of leaving, but how it's done. You
should be able to do that. And I'm I'm sorry,
and I can't believe that, Syracuse, and he couldn't figure
out a way. Okay, you know what's coming, right he
knew it was coming. He knew it was coming, and

(19:45):
for some reason, Syracuse, who knows how he's going to react.
He's gonna be mad. And we still can't figure out
a way to send our coach of forty seven years
old off the way because now everybody remembers the end,
No one remembers the final fours. Everybody remember his boy,
This is so seven years remember you know, dude, dude, dude, dude,

(20:07):
come on, man, he's fourth all time and wins it
because he's been there for forty seven year. He went
to thirty five tournaments. Okay, that's a lot. He's done
a lot. He's got the second most he's got. If
you if you're not winning, you don't get to stay
as a coup. Not true, that is absolutely truly. What
has he been winning? Adam gaz got fired three? What

(20:27):
does he want? You can't go. You can't go running
into the NFL. It's a completely different world. I mean,
once upon a time, guys got to stay for three
or four years in the NFL and quote build a program.
That doesn't happen anymore. You see these guys get five
six year deals all the time. He's like, good, he
got two years and change before he gets fired. Right,

(20:47):
you're acting like he's King Arthur or something. Okay, Well
his middle name is Arthur, so there is that. He
is James Arthur Beheim. So there is that part of it.
Hang the statue, Yeah, you got You know, you guys
are just doing this just to be opposite me. It's
like you don't feel this way. I don't harm and
you don't feel this way. You know you you love
that you wore orange for me every day last week
and he maybe out he maybe you are. Yeah, he

(21:08):
wore an orange shirt one day. He should have been
out three year shirt and orange on it because he's
just mad. You're just just anti how I had the
opposite of James because of baym is at bay arm
stinks and all this stuff. Yeah, well, you know what,
it's worked for ratings and dollars for all the guys
on the TV show. You could say a lot of
stuff you don't mean that has no basis in reality.

(21:30):
I don't do that, no, but okay, I'm calling it
for what it is. And yes, my Northwestern wildcast, congratulations
coach Collins. Team's gonna go to the NC Double A
Tournament second time they're over here. Yeah that's but am
crying if any of these I thought Collins was gonna
get fired after last year. And you know what, I
might have said he should have on air waves a

(21:51):
few times. You guess what, because you get back good
for his guy. Fire that guy, get rid of that guy.
Blank you blank you fire him. But I don't know.
I don't normally call for firings, but called firings all
the time. I do not you just called for you
said last year, I would have wanted Chris Collins fire.
Oh if you asked me point blank does the program
need to go in another direction? I would have told

(22:12):
you yeah, you might have hit the inflection point that
juice out of that. That's what it is. And you
just said, I about a call from me fired last year? Okay,
I mean Tom Tibodeau should have been fired last night.
Tom Tibodaus call. But he talked about it, right, he
thought he was getting fired three months ago. Yeah, almost was.
That's the way it works, Unmortunately, Look at all these
businesses you're hired to be fired, right, No, you're not. Listen,

(22:37):
mellow is just stop. We love me, love melost. We
were a top five team in the NBA lost LaMelo
less Hornets. Listen, this is not I like LaMelo lest
that's a pretty good word. This is not about the Knicks.
This is not about the Knicks. Well, I had to
talk about LaMelo ball yesterday and I used the lesson
that I had to pause going. I just said that,
you know, as the Hornets beat your knicks, lamel ball

(22:58):
dot dot dot less, horde hads took down the Knicks. Yeah,
you almost got us all fired. I really thought I
had this moment where I last Frostburg place just started
like you can't fire. You're gonna fire everybody. Man have
you You'll give that statement goes. So do you want
to come back? Frostburg? I didn't say that. So are
you retiring? Oh, it's up to the It's up to
then you're missed on Lebowski. It's up to Fox Sports Radio.

(23:23):
But do you want to come back? I didn't say that.
It's up to them. You're asking the wrong guy talks
to retirement though, Jason, there's plenty of other organizations and
schools out there if he wants to go test the
waters and have another job. Here's a rookie coach. You're
gonna take over for Rick Patino at Iona, I still
want a coach. You'll got a couple more years left
in me. Want to go do the next lose one
more game? You can have that Gi Just so stop

(23:45):
just you live in a fantasy world. Just because you
know Lakers are back, come need take more jabs to
the nose. Just when I had a fun idea for you,
Frostburg for a Lakers TV show, you want to give
it invented the TV show I'm the vampire that bit everybody. No, now,
the one who started this. It was, it was, it was,

(24:07):
it was, it was, it was, it was. It was zombie.
But I got vampire. That's all the same. But I
got an idea for a Lakers TV show that would
just put it. No, I'll pitch it coming up in
a little bit, how about that, Because I got a
great idea for what it's. It's an it's an awesome idea. Good.
But outside of this, we saw what went on today
with John Morand, who was not charged in the pulling

(24:29):
out a gun at a stripmall bar in near downtown Denver.
It was also announced he's going to be away from
the Grizzlies for at least four more games. Part of
the statement saying and how John Morand's not going to
be charged. I love the beginning when they describe it
as saying, we were investigating, uh, then an allegation of

(24:49):
a man who was singing and holding a firearm after
hours at a club. And I just love the phrase
was singing and holding a firearm, Like they both go together, Like, oh,
if he just held the firearm, fine, but he was
singing and holding a fire didn't boogie nights? Is that?
I think you're right with the little guy throwing poppers
on the ground. Yeah yeah, And then fat Man by

(25:11):
Jethrow Toll playing before night Ranger kicked in. See I
was more mister Blonde in reservoir talks when he's dancing
the stuck in the middle. Okay, we're gonna cut your
ear off. Sorry spoiler alert, but I liked it. Singing
and holding a firearm, not just holding a firearm. Singing
and holding a firearm, well, you know, the singing adds

(25:31):
ten or twenty years to that charge. I tell you
how serious it is, because if you're singing and holding
a firearm, we don't like that so much. So he
winds up not getting charged. It doesn't change anything with
him because he still has his choice to make. We
talked about this the other night. He can either straighten
up and suck it up and understand my reputations in
the toilet. It's gonna take a long time to get
out of it. But I gotta make sure I stay

(25:53):
in the NBA and I get out of making these
horrible decisions, or I go down the same road and
I wind up getting kicked out of the league, and
then who knows what happens after that. But the thing
that gets me now with this, Mike, is that you've
had all these things happened, and what have we gotten
from both the team and the NBA silence? Right, the
Grizzlies say he's away from the team, not a suspension,

(26:13):
which clearly you could after the fourth transgression, you could say, hey, look, dude,
you need it. You're suspended for a couple of days here.
You know you are bringing really bad optics and these
are things that you know there there are reports against you,
and this is the fourth time something has happened, and
one of them happened when you were with the team.
The holes the members of the Pacers who were assaulted

(26:35):
with not assaulted, but had that dust up with the
laser pointers with part of his friends who was around
after the game. That's something the team can suspend them for.
You're around the team and that happened, you could have
done something, but you did nothing. But more importantly, I
can't say I'm surprised the NBA has been silent and
Adam Silver has said nothing, because, like I say, he
never wants to do anything He is afraid of the

(26:58):
backlash if he suspends John around or as some kind
of decision, because he knows some players are going to
be upset if he does this. Man how he wasn't
charging anything and to do that. Oh no, no, Adam
Silver doesn't want to do anything. I don't want to
upset anybody, and anytime a controversy comes up, I'm gonna
sit and not say anything for the longest time. He
could have come out. He could have said something strongly.

(27:19):
He could have said it's a two game suspension. He
could have said this is what I'm working with it.
But nothing. He has just said absolutely nothing because he
doesn't want to do anything. Have some courage has occurs
because the only people talking about this are us. The
media is talking about it where it's a big story,
it's a big thing going on, and Adam Silver has
been absolutely silent on this. I can't say I'm surprised,
but come on, dude, at some point you got to

(27:40):
stand up and say, I'm the commissioner of the NBA.
I'm not afraid of taking on players. When something happens
that really paints the NBA in a bad light, and
stuff happens while you're with the team, while you're away
from the team, involving a minor. Dude, we gotta figure
something out here. I have a wide ranging latitude of
powers that I can come through with and figure something
else out. But instead we get nothing from him because

(28:01):
that because that's what Adam Silver does. He wants to
do nothing. Well, he may want to be the next
head of Disney, if reports or true, so we'll keep
an eye on that. But you got that, and you
got Demorris Smith. Maybe the secretary of Labor time to
be alive. But it's the idea that you're the head
of the NBA. The I get it, you get you
know the three sentence. We are aware of the allegations, etc.

(28:26):
Here's here's your time for a big PSA because any
player that has been asking and I use any very
loosely because it's not to a man, but a number
of players have gone has he been charged with the crime?
Is this a big deal? Is it? Whatever? Flaxco Burris
was on our airwaves up on game last Saturday and
he goes, dude, learn from me, because this had just
happened hours before those guys were on air. He at

(28:48):
TJ and LaVar and he goes, look what happened to me?
My reputation, my career never the same after that incident
where that gun went off, right, shoots himself in the lake.
It right. No matter what he did to try to
get back to the player, he was the reputation that
always follows him. And he's trying to be a spokesperson

(29:10):
of Hey, here's what you had. You've seen a lot
of other interviews, but you've also had in locker rooms players. Yeah,
you know, and you know, nothing happened. We hope he's okay.
For the Grizzlies, that's our guy, But clearly they thought
enough of weirdness and just kind of things being out
of sorts on the road where some of the veterans
had been calling people together, the reports that he doesn't

(29:32):
really go out with team mains and it's just him
and his friends when they're on the road. All of
these things are checkboxes. That's team wise, but league wise
for Adam Silver. At worst, the thing you should have
gotten was everybody got, you know, the video memo that
had to be played. Everybody got a strong talking point.
Whoever he wants to do the interview with, go to

(29:54):
your broadcast partners as you need to go find the
biggest megaphone that you can and at least talk about
how this won't be tolerated. People may not have liked
a lot of things that David Stern did, but he
would not have sat idly by and watch the potential
reputation of the league and one of its brightest young
stars be torn asunder. And that's where Adam Silver failed

(30:17):
miserably in this mark. He wants to do nothing. You
always how many times we have to say it? When
you people realize, oh yeah, you're right. Jeah boy, Oh
you're right. You're right, you're right, you're right, you're right,
you're right. What's another there for the uncomfortable. You're hired

(31:04):
big NBA story today, it doesn't look like we're going
to see Zion Williamson maybe for the rest of the season.
His injury, the update on it, he is not close
to returning to action with less than twenty games left.
Are we really going to see him again? And you
know this story comes up, Mike, and this is not

(31:25):
one of them. This is not a hot take story.
This is not one of This is one of those
stories where I call it. It's like the Wire Conversation.
Like The Wire was such a great show because it
just showed a mirror up to everybody and said, this
is who we are, right, all different aspects of life.
This is who we are. You can like it, not
like it, you can be upset about it, but this
is how it is. And this is how it is

(31:46):
with Zion Williamson. Now here's another year of him playing
thirty games or less. You can't count on him anymore. Right,
It's like Lebron. How much is Lebron gonna be on
the court anymore? He can't count on him because he's
at that point in his career where his body is
betraying him. Zion's body has never been able to to
keep up with the rigors of the NBA. This is

(32:06):
his fourth lower body injury in the last in the
last three years. Another year where hey, here's a hamstring,
here's a growing here's something that's going to keep him out.
They're not freak injuries, they're not bone breaks. This is
just whear and tear in the NBA injuries and you
can't count on him anymore. This is just how it's
going to be until the end of the career, his
career for the next few years. Maybe that's why he signed.

(32:29):
He was so eager to sign the extension with New
Orleans because am I gonna get at something? I got
to get all my money now because I can't slay
it on the floor. But this is just how it's
going to go. Every year is gonna be Hey, if
Zion can stay healthy, it'll be healthy for a little while.
Everybody'll get excited, and then at the end it's gonna
be all but here he is out again for another
fifty games, sixty games, forty games. He's out for the playoffs, okay,

(32:50):
maybe this year and then the end of his run
is gonna come, and it's gonna be. Is anybody gonna
sign him anything to pay him money after seven years
of not being healthy. That's kind of where it's going
to end and how it's gonna go for Zige Williamson.
There's no end of his career. There's no what's over now,
there's no It's just this is how it's gonna go
for the next couple of years, through the rest of
this contract. Yeah, the hard part, And you know, going

(33:10):
back to his contract, I think part of it was
there was so much smoke and noise about people in
his inner circle, family members, friends and everybody else trying
to say, oh, New Orleans isn't big enough for him.
So I think part of it was to shut that up. Right. Certainly,
the longevity concerns, going all the way back to blowing
out the sneaker when he was at Duke, they've been there, right,

(33:32):
We've wondered about the physicality and where he's at, how
he plays the torque on his body, all of those things.
How quickly we'd hit that point, and unfortunately we get
to see him flash these brilliant twenty game stretches and
there are a few of them, but we've gotten those.
They are like, all right, he's averaging twenty six points

(33:54):
a game. He's a pogo stick, and then he gets
hurt and this is a hamstring injury that has now
kept him out several months and probably for the year. Oh,
I thought you were talking about Kevin Durant from the night.
You know what we'll get into playing surfaces and why
you shouldn't sign any deal with anybody. Well, there's that too.
Remember I posted a video to you guys and retweeted

(34:15):
it as well. Kevin Durant when he was given some
kid a jersey. I'm like, that guy's like one hundred
and eight pounds, soaking wet, the slim Reaper truly. But
we'll get to him in a minute with Zion. While
we're on the other end of the spectrum of trying
to figure out where the healthy weight is, training, habits,
whatever else. I mean, part of it is I'd be curious,
like we do with Anthony Davis and all these other athletes,

(34:37):
of what's going on with their training, their offseason work, whatever,
what's going on with their diet, And then you always
have to figure out on that giant pie chart, how
big a percentage is just plain old bad luck. Look,
there is part of bad luck that is part of it,
but there is every single year the guy's played, going

(34:58):
back to his senior year of high school, He's missed
tons of time. He just he just can't doesn't have
a body that can with stand being able the night
to night of the NBA. Some of it's been like,
if this was freak injury, if it was all we
had this this, this freak injury in addition to the
other ones, I would say, okay, But it's all these
soft tissue running up and down. This just this is
normal stuff. And and to be out so long with

(35:20):
every injury, it's I mean, when when he's really he's
not gonna suddenly get healthier. I mean, you know, you
get hurt once and it's okay, we're looking forward to
come back. You heard a second time, it's okay. Now
let's do or die. After the third time he'd hurt's okay.
It's whatever we get from the guy, Like you can't
build around him, you can't give him an extension. You
can't say he's gonna be someone when he's twenty five,
he's gonna be great. I mean twenty five, he could
be out of the league like right now where everything stands,

(35:43):
and we'll see how quickly Morant gets back on the court.
Car J Barrett's the best guy out of that top
of the twenty nineteen draft class. Who knew suddenly suddenly RJ.
Barrett looks like that's crazy Twitter and out about a
frosca Mike and swallowed down the Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike. Car coming up next, how about
I tell you exactly how the Lamar Jackson franchise tag

(36:06):
is going to play out. That's next, Fox
