You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Hello and welcome inside
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon. Harmon, The quitter
is out again tonight. Steve de segurin Harmon, who has
just decided I don't feel like working. Hey, that's what
happens sometimes. So he's saying he's a hobo. Well place
(00:46):
the hobo drawbo. He does have a job, he just
doesn't have to be at it tonight or tomorrow. It's okay, yeah,
no's he's out. He's decide quitter. He's a every time,
every time during the day when he you know, Harmon
and I and Frostburg always text ideas to each other
(01:07):
all day. We go through stuff on on, Hey, what
about this story, this story? This story? Any time he
texts on a day he's off. I always right back,
what do you care you? Blank? And quitter and then
Frostburg writes back quitter and said some memes he gets
all back. We call him a quitter. Quitter, your quitter here? Oh,
come by, Steve. We've been together for like eight years.
(01:27):
That's right, he's your best friend, I guess exactly. And
you're you're one of my best friends too. Well, I
thank you. I'm the temporary, temporary filing best friend tonight
and tomorrow. Is that what you want to be, the
temporary fill in best friend? Yeah? Sure, that's appropriate. I
mean Mike's back Monday, right, yeah, sure, sure, Well unless
you want to take more time off, I guess, yeah,
(01:48):
that's okay. Well, you know your full time, you have
days to you sure, go ahead. So that's what I'll
do and my temper, I know. So we gotta start
the show again. It's Easter vacation, by the way. You
know we're not knocking the guy. This is true. This well,
it's not Easter va Asian yet. Easter is not till Sunday.
Still at a bunch of days going on, so you
know in school you would get this week off right
leading up to Easter Sunday. Yeah, they called spring break.
(02:08):
It's not east It's it's it's called springbreak because some
school districts don't have it this week. Some schoolders already
have had their week off. Yeah, I know, Easter we
always always look. I just loved when I was like, oh,
Easter's coming, Easter week. Yeah, like I didn't know what
spring break was or anything like that. I like, and
then then when you're like fifth and sixth grade, is
spring break is just everybody screaming and wearing bathing suits
(02:29):
in Florida, right that spring break? Right, oh, spring break
is here that it's like, oh, Easter week, we're off
for Easter. Oh that's so cool. All the chocolate, the
easter a oh fantastic. Now spring break you're saying fifth
grade is what was your understanding of it or your experienced?
Fifth grade was when I first started hearing about hearing
(02:50):
about yeah, and like, what's what spring break? And then
you know, you heard, well it's time everybody gets off
from school, and oh, yeah, like Easter week, and then
you know, but there's always you know, this bring Break
movie that's coming out, and it's you know a bunch
of you know, high schoolers and you know in bathing suits,
are just yelling and there's all kinds of innuendo. And
you see the commercials and they're never the Memorial Weekend movies.
(03:11):
You know where the summer is really going to start
with the movies. Yeah, that well that was that was
Blockbuster Weekend. That was ay the blockbuster you know. But
spring break was I'm like, what is that spring? But
I do do understand I have to get to go swimming.
I have to go swimming and spring That was kind
of my first thing about getting what it was. You know,
who could have who could have an extended spring break?
I see it is one Kyler Murray. We're gonna have
(03:31):
to touch on this today. Are you? Are you done
with the spring break? But you bring banter? You want
to move on to columber here done? I'm saying that
his spring break could be lasting through July. Well, it's
funny you say that, because our our big story tonight
we're gonna start with is Kyler Murray, who, according to
reports today, has not gotten an offer from the Cardinals
(03:54):
for a new contract. Right he he told everybody he
was really mad a couple of weeks ago scrub the
Ardinals from his social media profiles because this is what
you do in your I'm gonna scrub you from my
social media profile. Yeah, i'm gonna say, I'm gonna say
i'm gonna unfriend you, and I'm gonna say not in
a relationship on Facebook. I'm gonna do that. And then
(04:15):
we knew that there was an issue with Kyler Murray
and the Cardinals because athletes treat social media very seriously,
and this is a way to prove that you're upset
without saying anything, I'm gonna scrub you from social media.
It's a passive, aggressive way to get the team to go,
what's wrong? What happened? What is it like when people
cryptically post on Facebook today is a big day. Why
don't you just tell me where you have going on today?
(04:36):
So I have to get on the comments and go, oh,
what's going on today? Well, let's see how many people
care about what I'm saying when i'd say todaysan McNay, Oh,
what's wrong? What's wrong? Are you okay? Kyler? What's wrong?
And the reaction to it Steve when it first came
out was not, hey man, we gotta figure things out.
This wasn't a Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers reaction where
it was oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, he's our bleep enfranchise man.
(04:58):
We gotta fit what's going on he? Or why is
he mad? What's happening? It was met with a Kyla
Murray's upset and the only person to say anything was
Larry Fitzgerald, longtime Cardinals legend, future Hall of Famer, who said,
I hope both sides can work it out. Oh, that's
not what you normally say. When you feel like you
have your franchise quarterback. You say something like, hey, Kyler's
(05:19):
got to get on the same page with this team
and they have to figure out a contract. This is
what you do for quarterbacks. It was I hope the
two sides can figure it out. And the news today
that they're not going to offer from a new contract.
They're still waiting and his representatives are waiting for this
offer from the Cardinals. It is time for an f
them picks offer for Kyler Murray. Clearly, they are telling
(05:40):
you he's available. If you want to bowl us over,
we will listen. So if you want Kyler Murray, and look, honestly,
he's a tiny bit overrated to me, Like he's not
he's not top five quarterbacks. He periphery top ten. Yeah,
but still, hey, I'd like to have a top ten quarterback.
I trade Zach Wilson for Kyler Murray um, even though
he's a little overrated. Yeah, it's time to make an
(06:01):
F them picks off for Kyler Murray because the guy
is talented. He's been to Pro Bowls and and you
can understand that we put him in and now we're
gonna pay him. But now we've solved our quarterback situations
for the next decade, It's time to make an F
them picks offer because that's what you do. And FM
picks offer is not, Oh, when a guy's out there,
we make an F them picks offer and we're we
(06:23):
wind up being the high bidder. No, and F them
picks offer is Hey, you just said you don't want
to trade, but what if we do this? Hey, F
these picks. We're gonna give you this pick and this
pick and this pick. Oh well, now we have to
do it. Now, we have to do it because that's
what happened with the Seattle Seahawks. We're not gonna trade Russ.
Oh well, you're you're gonna do? Is that offer? Okay,
now we're gonna do it. That's the whole deal that
f them picks offer is that you have to go
(06:44):
out now because the Cardinals are by not saying anything,
they are saying, call us, call us. We're not gonna
shop him because in case something doesn't happen, he's already
said he's not gonna play this year unless he gets
a new contract. They don't want to make that relationship worse.
So if it's put out that they're calling people and
calling other teams, that might not play out. But this
is this is a big sign. They have hung the
(07:05):
first sale sign out in front of Kyler Murray's house.
It's like in ah in high school when when a
team loses, the home team loses and the upset alumni
going put for sales signs and the head coaches out
like they put it in front of his house because
they want him out of town because he can't win.
Like that's what's going on. Like the Cardinals may as
well be in Kyler Murray's front law going hey, we're
just putting some signs and Kyler don't worry about it.
(07:25):
What does it say on it? It just says a
great quarterback that's all it said. Just put him in.
Just put him in. No, because he is available, and
if you're a team that needs a quarterback in his time,
you make an FM picks offer, you can get Kyler
Murray from Arizona. Nothing to see here, people, That's basically
what you're saying, right because Kyler Murray, by the way,
I agree with your assessment of his skills that, yes,
(07:48):
he's fun to watch, he's what sparkly is the adjective.
But how often is he going to run for eight
hundred yards like he did a couple of years ago.
I mean, he was down to about four hundred yards
rushing last year, and granted he missed a couple of games,
but that was a playoff team he was on last year.
He continually is sacked and that's not a good thing
for your offense, as much as you might get a
(08:09):
big run out of getting out of the pocket. Kyler
Murray has a losing record for the three years of
his career, even getting to the playoffs. We recalled what
a disaster that was in l A, the actual playoff game.
So yeah, nine and five when he was their regular
season But I agree, let's not go overboard about just
because he was a number one pick overall. I mean,
(08:30):
Baker Mayfield was a number one pick overall. Let's not
that's not fair. Kyler Murray has at least made a
Pro Bowls, Like I can't believe you do. I'm saying,
just because your number one overall, that shouldn't be a
tag with you in a positive sense. You have to
do it on the field, That's all I'm saying. He's good,
but he's not spectacular. Some plays are spectacular, but it's
(08:52):
not like he's had three absolutely spectacular seasons. He was
sacked almost fifty times his first year, and even missing
games he was still say times last year. Yeah, he's
a guy that is very good. I don't believe quite
in the hype. I feel like the media and fans,
you know, think, oh, now we have the next Lamar
(09:12):
Jackson and he's Yes, yes, he's good. But when you're
twenty four and you can play the way he does,
what what? What? What is a team? Rather? What would
you rather do? If you're a team, roll the dice
on a quarterback in the draft that you get that
maybe pans out for you. I'll tell you what. That's difficult,
right the Jets are learning that. The Jaguars are learning that.
Or would you say, okay, we can trade a couple
(09:34):
of first round picks in the player segment pick to
go get a quarterback and solidify that position. Because Kyler
Murray is a good player. He's better than Derek Carr
who got forty million dollars extension from the Raiders yesterday.
So yeah, this is a guy. Go make the f
then picks offer for him, because clearly he is someone
that has a lot of talent and and a change
of scenery and and potential a little bit more controlling
(09:59):
of of or understanding what it means to be a
starting quarterback in the NFL. Uh, that could do him
wonders because if if this is a bad atmosphere now
in the Arizona, okay, someplace else that believes in him,
lets him go play and do his thing. Yeah, you
can do a hell of a lot worse than Kyler
Murray if he was just a periphery, if he was
a top fifteen guy and like he's the middle of
the pack, I'm like, yeah, you can roll with that. No,
(10:20):
but he's you know, he's into the top ten guy,
and that's a big jump to make from fifteen to
ten because you look at the guys that are that
are in the top ten a quarterback, you get outside
of that top five, top six, and you're still rolling
out guys that are really, really good. So the fact
that he's right there and has performed pretty well over
the course of the last three years, yea f then
picks off for Kyler Murray, so he might be in
(10:42):
the top ten in the league. And I like the
car analogy because you get just as many touchdown passes
with Kyler Murray and fewer interceptions, and you get the
running that you don't with Derek Carr. And yeah, who
kept the extension this week, But pretty much any decent,
any decent quarterback in this league these days, if you
play a full season, you throw for four thousand yards, right,
(11:02):
and Kyler Murray would have been right around four thousand
yards passing with a full season. But again you'll add
the say five hundred yards rushing. So I agree with
the Pro Bowls that he's been to. And yes, he
was a Rookie of the Year when he came into
the league. But let's not go crazy and say, hey,
you know, Mahomes and Brady you know, well, okay, not
even Joe Burrow or you know, compare the stats with
(11:24):
Kirk Cousins. Granted you don't get the the rushing stads,
but Cousins didn't throw interceptions like most of the quarterbacks
in the NFL do. So yeah, maybe maybe fringe top
ten of the league. Yeah, yeah, someone who's gonna give
you thirty touchdowns a year around ten interceptions. Right, that's
a phenomenal rate. You would give me a three to
one touchdown to interception ratio. That's pretty good. Derek cart
(11:46):
his best days is two to one maybe, right, and
you also get the the added bonus of him be
able to make plays with his legs and outside of
the pocket. Uh yeah, it's toime and people are stunned.
But he clearly the Cardinals are telling you, yeah, things
are not great. They would if they really wanted Kyler Murray,
they would be rushing to sign him to a deal.
(12:06):
They'd be rushing to figure something out. But the fact
they're laying back, I mean that's a message, right. I mean, yes,
the Cowboys always were gonna give Dak Prescott money. They
just wanted to figure out their financial flexibility and not
pay him until they absolutely felt they had to. Um,
that's not the case with the Cardinals and Kyler Murray.
This is hey, I'm not playing. Let's I get a
new deal. Okay, but wait wait wait wait, but that's
(12:26):
not how it works. Like on the Star and you
tell me that that you really want me. Yeah, no, no,
you could say say whatever you want. I mean, they
have not said one thing. There's not been one Brian
Kudacuns press conference of hey, we you know, we love
uh Kyler Murray and we gotta make sure he's there.
Because at least the Packers had that, right, You got
Kudacuns at least once while I said, listen, he's our guy,
(12:47):
Matt Lafleur saying he's our guy, Aaron. We're right. We
ride with Aaron Rodgers. He makes our whole team go.
No matter what you saw back and forth, they still
had that. Not one time at Cliff Kingsbury said hey, hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, Hey,
this is crazy now, man, we gotta keep Kyler Murray.
What is happening to all of you? None of that,
there's been none of There's just just been silence. So
you know he's available. I'm telling you call him, make
(13:09):
that offer, Jets or whatever team wants to call Jets
and make that offer. Somebody is going to be the Jets.
I'd say you can go get him. He's available, and
it's not going to be as big as it was
for Russell Wilson, probably to trade a couple of first
round picks and the second and the third and the player.
But you can do that. You can make an FM
picks offering. You can have Kyler Murray on your team
before the draft, and you can debut him in your
(13:30):
helmet and say he's here, he's so excited, so happy,
get him to sign that. Hey, just because you're trading team,
doesn't mean you're going to play baseball. Sign right here,
not going back to baseball. You can get Kyler Murray, Steve,
he is there. It's exciting. Yeah, if you trade for
him and then something goes wrong and he'll just scrub
you and then and then we're don't go on for
the new team for this summer. For those who are
unaware of the NFL Network report, it's that Kyler Murray,
(13:52):
Arizona's quarterback is not expected to play for them without
a new contract. You might say, wait a minute, he's
still knew in this league and he have a contract.
The answer is yes, yes, he does currently have a
contract for this year. He is under contract for two
but even being a number one overall pick, he's not
getting what the other big quarterback cut not nearly what
(14:13):
the other big quarterback contracts are. When you're young into
this league, a lot of the money that you get
is from signing bonus, and Pro Football Talk points out
that Murray, if he doesn't report by the third day
of training camp this summer, would lose a roster bonus
of over four point five million dollars. So I don't
disagree with the report. Okay, he's not expecting to play
(14:35):
for Arizona without a new contract, but he's literally going
to forfeit the bulk of his money because the salary
is certainly not four point five million dollars this year.
He's gonna forfeit that and just hold out of the
first week of camp. I mean that, literally, just the
first week that would do him do him financial harm.

with my temporary filling bass friend Steve de Sager live
from the Fox Sports Radio studios. Now we have another
big quarterback story coming up. It was just yesterday that
I said, you know, it's great not talking about Aaron
Rodgers the last five weeks. It's been fun. No, no, no.
But today we get a big Aaron Rodgers story and
(15:17):
it's a fun one that's coming up next. Right here,
Jason Smith, Steve Desager, this is Fox Sports Radio. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show

one of our favorite cities, Las Vegas, your home for

and competition. It is always on. Now go on and
playing your trip at visit Las Vegas dot com to
see the best and brightest in Vegas, the greatest arena
on Earth. UM hope opener underway right now Steve for
the Dodgers and already things are out of control with
(16:03):
Chevez Ravine, Freddie Freeman singles in the first inning he scores,
he has immediately taken out of the game by Dave Roberts,
Justin Turner with a single to drive in Freddie Freeman.
He was removed from the game. So the Dodgers now
they're taking everybody out of the game after they perform. Well, uh,
they have a big roster tonight. But Max Munsey is
(16:24):
up right now. They have already signaled this is his
final life out of the game. They'll be taking him
out of the game after he's up now too. It's
no holds, bart In Chevets. No, actually it's after a
lead off flyout. We got a Freddie Freeman single, Trede
Turner single, Justin Turner RBI single, and now Max Munsey
with an RBI single. And it might be the starting
pitcher who's actually taken out of the game in the
(16:46):
first innings, Max Munsey. He's waving to everybody, throwing his
batting gloves into the stands. He's coming out of the game.
Everybody's coming out all the although Muncy kind of like Kershaw,
did miss all the playoffs due to an arm injury, right,
so you know it's Darrell. I don't know if Muncy
like Kershaw, I didn't pick up a ball until January,
so that's a little bit different. But yeah, whoever it is,
(17:07):
that's the starting pitcher for the Reds. It's getting a
mound visit with literally one out in the first inning.
So yes, Luis has a former Yankee? Uh is not? Uh?
You know, I I think you're right. He may be
the guy actually coming out of this game of his
own of not of his own volition, but yeah to nothing.
Dodges with the lead right now at bottom of the
first inning the home opener at Chevezervine for l A.
(17:29):
And yes, today according to Bob Nightingale, you know a
friend of the show. He comes on the show all
the long time. Oh sure, he done lots of stuff,
had big stuff today the day after on the Dodgers
and Clayton Kershaw coming out of his perfect game after
seven ins a day ago. We talked about this last night.
It makes no sense. Last night, I make some sense.
(17:52):
Well it makes it makes you know what it is.
It's what's the smallest defensible thing I can make about this?
So I'm to say, oh, he hasn't had a lot
of spring training. Oh, okay, he's he's had no stressful innings.
He was an eighty pitches. He was rolling. Uh, that's
when you leave the guy in. But let's just if
(18:13):
you even until he until even if he hit a guy,
you could take him out. Well you haven't no hitter, Clayton,
we're taking you out. But it's a perfect game, Steve.
This is this is not just hey, you could have
a no hitter. This is a perfect game. It wasn't
just a perfect game, perfect game with strikeouts. He could
have finished with nineteen strikeouts in the print and people
would say, that's the most dominant game I've ever seen
(18:34):
anyone pitch in the history of baseball, in the hundred
and fifty years baseball has been out there, this is
the most dominant game I've ever seen. Nope, Nope, not
gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it. And they
talked about it today. Dave Roberts talked about at Clayton
Kirshaw talked about it. But before I tell you what
they said, let me tell you what I said last night,
because it happened certain times when you get taken out
(18:54):
of a game like this, If you are a competitor
and you come out of a game where you can
be pitching a perfect game like Clayton Kershaw. Right yesterday
he said all the right things. Ah, it was a
right move to take me out. I'm on the same
page like Clayton Kershaw is a good teammate, right, so
he's gonna say the right things. But I guarantee you
he's gonna leave that game and get past the highs
of of the game and how well he pitched, and
(19:15):
he's gonna wake up today and go, what the hell
was I? How did I not fight to stay in
that game? How did I not try to stay in
that game? More? I had a perfect game at eighty pitches?
What was I thinking today? Bob Nightingale talked to both
Dave Roberts and Clayton Kershaw, and according to Bob on Twitter,
(19:35):
Clayton Kershaw woke up today with a case of the
what ifs. He thought, what if? But he also understands
that fans wanted to see something great and he gets
that part of it. But waking up today with a
what if? Congratulations, because you know what, when you're a
competitor like Kershaw, some of the big even if, even
if you're not when you're rolling that night a chance
and immortality. You are going to think about that the
(19:56):
rest of your life. I don't know that it's an
everyday thing, but almost every day that'll pop in your head. Man,
had that perfect game, I came out of the game.
Every single day, it will do it, just as Seahawks fans,
Hey does it day go by? You don't think why
he didn't give the ball to Marshall Lynch on the
goal line? They're gonna say, Nope. At some point it
pops into my head every day, no matter what I'm doing,
I get some of that. Uh, that's exactly what's gonna happen.
(20:17):
And Kershaw is having publicly it was a little bit
of remorse, but you can tell when you wake up
with what if. As time goes on, as long as
he is okay and he doesn't battle arm injuries, he
rolls through this season, he's gonna go, man, what the hell?
Why didn't I fight to stay? Why wasn't I the
old Clayton Kershaw who would normally just say, hey, I'm
going back out there, but I got the reliever coming.
(20:38):
It doesn't matter. I'll just tell him to go back.
I'm going back out to the mountain. That's what he
used to be. He's gonna have that regret because this
is something he will think about. I had a night
to be perfect and pitch potentially the most dominant game
in the history of Major League Baseball, and I don't
know what I was thinking. I said the right things,
but I was just I was just crazy last night.
We're coming out of that game. Why did I say
(20:59):
is ready to come out of that game. He's gonna
regret not staying in that and that's gonna be one
of the big things for his career. I think he'll
have far fewer regrets if and I believe what he
said yesterday, they do well in the bigger things that
there's a bigger picture. Well, if the bigger picture goes awry,
like he doesn't stay healthy this year, or the team
you know, crashes and burns or something like that, then
(21:19):
then I agree. But you're saying that you would have
kept him in as long as it took until somebody
got on base, even if it's a hundred ten pitches,
hud Well, obviously he's not throwing a d pitches and
there's nobody gotten on base, right because this is not
a no hitter. That's a that's a difference if there
was a no hitter, than potentially you could see a
lot of pitches. You could see him walking play. You
(21:40):
know that that happens if he's not perfect. I'm taking
him out right, because like the guy's already had a
no hitter in his career, he gets a dominant one, right,
that was close to a perfect game. Remember there's a
botch to play it short. So yeah, exact exactly exactly
was that close. But to throw a perfect game, uh,
you generally don't throw a lot of pitches because you're
not You're you're not struggling. You are you are mastering
(22:02):
the other team in a way that they can't even
touch you. And when you have that going, you have
the strike zone going your way. Because clearly everything he had,
he had the home plate umpire. Hey, he was calling
everything he liked. Yeah, what is it gonna be another
ten pitch inning for him, a twelve pitch inning for him.
Then he's going to the ninth inning at ninety pitches
and he's maxing out around a hundred. I'm okay with
the starting pitcher maxing out at around a hundred pitches.
(22:24):
If he's pitching a perfect game, because it's not it's
not the stressful innings that you really worry about. That's
he worry about with pitchers when they throw a lot
of pitches. It's boy, he had a twenty four inning,
twenty four pitch inning here in the third, that he
had a seven pitch inting here in the six. Hey,
you gotta come out of the game, all right. You
had two really stressful ins where you threw so many pitches,
and that's what puts the wear and tear on the arms.
Kirkshaw had no stress. So yeah, and and now with
(22:46):
with with this talk today, and oh yeah, but I
woke up a little bit of what if. Yeah, you're
gonna have what if the rest of your life. You
should have fought more to stay in that game. Should
have got on the phone and called upstairs, going, Dave Roberts,
I know it's not your call. I know this is
made upstairs. Get me on the phone to them right now.
Want to make this phone call and talk to the
guys that I'm staying in this bleeping game because now
he's going to go through that regret. I still saying
(23:07):
I believe what he said yesterday about the bigger things
the bigger picture, and if they cash in on that,
I think he'll have far fewer regrets. Even though you're right,
a chance at history, but the history only comes with
two more perfect innings, which realistically puts him over a
hundred pitches for a guy who literally didn't pick up
a baseball until January because he'd not only missed the playoffs,
(23:31):
he didn't even work out in the off season. He
didn't even know if he was coming back to the
Dodgers because he didn't even know if he would feel
good pitching for anyone in the first place. Plus spring
training was shortened, so there are other factors. This isn't
you know, and it's that guy in his first start
of the season. This isn't your typical My goodness, it's June.
Give the guy a little bit of a leash. It's
(23:53):
it wasn't that. Yeah, well, but remember Dave Roberts also
did it with Ross stripling, or the Dodgers also did it.
Rather because I don't think this richie call all the time. Yeah,
they do it all the time. So I think to
be mad at Dave Roberts and the way you saw
him talk today, he said, Oh, I understand the fans
are upset. I'm not on social media. I can imagine
what said, um nothing in the vein of hey, I'm
(24:15):
defending my decision right, because that if Dave Roberts really
was the guy that made the call, he would spend
a lot of time today defending that decision because he
wants the players in the dugout and the locker room
to know, Hey, I'm looking out for number one. I'm
looking out for him. I get this, and I want
people to know that I have his best interest at heart.
But just it was very much Yeah, I know it
said that, you know it was. It was a decision
(24:36):
we made, and I get people wanted to see it,
but you know, Clayton thrown Adie pitches, so that's we wanted. Yeah.
I think he's trying to very obliquely tell us that
this wasn't really my call, because I don't think it was.
I don't think for a second he decided, Okay, Clayton,
hear your eighty pitches, you're coming out now. Right. Just
because he's the manager the three times with rich Hill
and Strippling and now and now Kershaw doesn't mean that
it was his call. I guarantee you this was before
(24:59):
the game, or this is what we agreed upon around
eighty pitches or for Kershaw. However, then he's coming out
of the game, and it doesn't matter what's going on.
He's coming out of the game. We're protecting our asset,
we're protecting him, We're staying the course with this, doesn't
matter what's going on. Okay, So then when he's getting
to get to that pitch mark, he's coming out of
the game. I don't think it was Roberts for a second,
and and hearing him talk today kind of everything today
(25:20):
reinforced what we talked about last night. Kershaw was going
to have regret and this wasn't Dave Robert's call. I
absolutely love that you brought up rich Hill's name, because
not when he had a perfect game going, but remember
the postseason when the Dodgers finally made the World Series
five years ago, they continually we're taking rich Hill out
before he got a third look at the batting order
(25:41):
of whoever the opponent was. That was the front office
deciding in advance, not a number of innings, but just
he's only going to go twice through the lineup, even
though one game it was only four innings in a
World Series game and he had seven strikeouts, and his
start before it was five innings and he had eight strikeouts. Sorry,
you're not gonna see these guys the third time. It's
(26:01):
decided in advance. So for someone if they heard you
say that, just now say, oh no, that doesn't It's
been happening for years with the Dodgers actually Twitter, and
how about a fresca the Jason Smith Show with my
temporary filling bass friend Steve de Singer. Uh So, just
so you know the dit I we said it was
gonna happen last night with the Dodgers and now Clayton Kershaw.
(26:22):
Welcome to the rest of your baseball life where even
no matter what happens, he's gonna be questioning it because Steve,
it's the unknown of not being out there to give
it a shot. Right because let's just say this season
goes terribly for him right there, there's let's say all
different outcomes. Season goes terribly, he's not healthy. He's gonna think, Man,
if this is gonna happen anyway, boy, I would have
like to have that that chance to go in there
(26:43):
and pitch that love last two winnings, see if I
could pitch a perfect game. Let's say the season goes
middling for him. You know he's good. He gets hurt
a couple of times. He's saying, yeah, well, you know,
I was kind of up and down, but boy, that
day I was feeling it. Man, I could have really
maybe I could have had a perfect game. Or let's
say he has a phenomenal season, he's active, be in
the Kershaw of Old. He's saying, man, why couldn't I
have stayed in there? Why didn't I stay in there
(27:04):
for that last two winnings to try to pitch that
perfect game. No matter what the outcome of the rest
of his career or life is, he's gonna question it
every single day, every day. Look, and athletes do that. Look,
you know me, I coach, I coach youth soccer, and
I coach youth softball, right, and generally lots of the
wins and losses with with the girls, I let go
(27:25):
and the girls let go because you know they're twelve
and thirteen. It's more about being able to get better
while you're having fun the same time, right, trying to
make sure you're getting better as a player, you're right exactly.
But there's a couple of games and tournaments wise or
a chance to win a championship where you know, we
didn't win, and these are still things, you know, I
think about from time time going off, only that had happened.
(27:45):
If I had taken so and so out, if I
had done this, if I had done this move here,
we could have won a championship. I mean, this is
this is this is where you live with you know,
and you know, I'm not saying it. I obsessed with it,
but it's stuff that comes up frequently, and I got,
oh man, you're absolutely right. If you've seen the McEnroe
Borg documentary, they had this classic Wimbledon Finals match in
(28:07):
and walking the two of them walking together. Even McEnroe
decades later is saying, you know, I remember this point.
It was if I just hit that, And then you know,
decades later he is and this is a guy who's
been a major champion multiple times in his career, and
so he was bringing up the boy if that and
if only this, and then his opponent, you're on, Borg
(28:29):
interrupts him and saying, yeah, but you didn't you think
about if I had done this, if I could have
done that. That That's kind of what sports is. A
lot of times when you fall short at something, it's off,
we had done this, if we had done this way.
You know, I still think about a couple of things
that that I could have done in the championship game
and my daughter's uh softball last year. If I had
(28:50):
done this, if I had gone to this picture here,
if I had done that, and granted, you know, these
are all things that you're saying, Okay, if I could
go back and fix all the things that went wrong,
but you still think about, off I had done that.
I I we could have done something, we could have
made it better. And this is you know, and this
is nothing compared to the you're talking about the the
MLB level of Clayton Kersher with the career he has had,
(29:11):
in the life he has had, where it could have
been perfect game picture Clayton Kershaw. Uh, it's a lot
to live with because that's something he's gonna he's gonna
think about. I still think he'll he'll think even more
in the what if category of what if Houston wasn't
cheating in Game five of the World Series at home?
There's that too. There's that too. Because he dominated Houston
(29:32):
in Game one, and he dominated Houston in short relief
I mean in short rest relief in Game seven, and
was dominating that night at Houston until suddenly, out of nowhere,
they're not missing pitches anymore. In fact, the stat and
I've said it on the air before Kershaw was ten
strikeouts per nine innings that year and I think he
had two strikeouts is all in Houston that game. He
(29:54):
threw over fifty breaking balls and got literally one swing
and miss. Geez, do you think they do what was coming?
You want to what if? I mean, because that was
a seven game World Series. I mean, the whole narrative
of his career immediately changes if the Dodgers win that
and Kershaw, Kershaw stars as he was in the process
of doing in well. And there's also, hey, what if
(30:15):
we had in the seventh inning of games just taking
them out and put him in right field, let somebody
else pitch the seventh and then he comes in and
pitches the eighth to ninth, that that might have worked out. Now,
if you're referring to like when Don mattigally was leaving
Kershaw in like playoff game that that went awry, against
the Cardinals, there was no bullpen to go to as
and when he finally brought in Pedro Bias to run,
(30:37):
Homer given up and the Dodgers lost by one. So
you know you can't win for lose. That I think
is the expression. Be sure to catch live editions of

Night off in the NBA's We Get Ready for the
final night of the Playing around Tomorrow feels like the
(31:39):
early first four of the n C Tournament. It's fantastic.
Are all the games in Dayton? Yes, and they're all
on True TV. That's why it's happen. You know, that
would be pretty cool if actually that. Yeah, we're gonna
move the this tournament to Dayton and we're gonna play there,
and we're gonna we're gonna bump the Carbonaro effects so
we can show an NBA, which which hasn't had new
shows in like two or three years, but it's still
(32:01):
on World Wall of that channel. The last time we
take that Impractical Jokers was but we taped eight thousand
of them, so we're still on new first run episode.
Carboner is making their programming schedule disappear. It's like it's
like when Top Gun Maverick comes out. I'm gonna be like, no,
if they were right, I come to your side on this.
(32:22):
It's not an actual movie, not if there's not a tailor,
it's just a trailer. It's not. But if it ever
did come out, I would say, boy, everybody looks young. Yeah,
because they shot the movie four years ago. It's not
digital work. It's nothing like that. Guys look really. Tom
Cruise looks even younger, like that one Ethan Hawk movie
where they brought all the actors back eighteen years later.
(32:42):
You know, and they watched them age the family age.
We're getting to that point. You could just go ahead, right,
another Top Gun movie now, film it now, and then
you can have part three and everybody will have aged
compared to the other two. Yeah. Well, and and you know,
Top Gun Part three can come out and it does
to be grown would be great. But I'm telling you,
you're right, there's no movie. It's just a trailer. It's
(33:04):
just you're gonna get there and you're gonna you're gonna
see the trailer. It's gonna sound great, and they're gonna
show the first one and everybody's gonna be so excited.
They're gonna walk away and go that was so cool.
Oh I went to go see the second one, didn't
I oh man, But they showed the first one on
the big screen. It was so cool. Let's be honest.
We just want to hear the music and the thundering
roar of the jets. That'll that'll do me really exactly.
(33:27):
That's it. There, you go see there, and you're gonna
get at in the trailer. You're gonna get in the trailer.
You don't need any more of it. They may give
you an extended trailer when it comes. Hey, it's make
it like a four minute trailer. But that's all the
vent that's all the that's all the videos. And since
most trailers do give away the entire movie, you pretty
much got it from start to finish. There are no
questions left unanswered. Uh uh? Now, speaking of questions unanswered,
(33:52):
this is a story I don't buy, right, I said
a few minutes ago. And you want to know something,
you ask why? Um? As we get set for the
first round of the NBA Playoffs, reports come out today
that potentially Ben Simmons could make his Nets and season
debut around Game four, And I say, why? What? What?
(34:14):
Tell me why this is going to happen? Right? Because
this is where I don't. I don't. I don't think
any of this is true. Right. You're talking about somebody
who couldn't play for Philadelphia because he had he had
mental health issues, not wanting to go back on the
court there with them. Then he gets traded to the Nets,
then he winds up with a back issue that's had
him out all the way until now. He's not sprinting,
(34:36):
he's not scrimmaging, he's not doing anything. But now he
can come back around game four. He's suddenly gonna come
back around game four. He's been off and out for
all of this length of time, but now he can
go back around game four. I don't believe it at all.
I don't believe it. I I look at this is
this is one of those stories that's out there to
help him save face, that that he's thinking about coming back,
and maybe he can come back because that you don't
(34:57):
want the whispers to grow that he didn't want to play,
he didn't want to play it all this season because
I don't know how injured the guy is. I mean, really,
his his injury and his the fact that he wasn't
playing has been kept out of the public eye for
so long, and and even Kevin Durant said today, Yeah,
I don't think we're gonna have I'm I'm preparing as
if we're not gonna have Ben Simmons. Suddenly, a guy
who's not even cleared for contact and and sprinting and
(35:20):
running is going to play in a week. Yeah, I'm
not buying it. I'm not after being out all this time. Yes,
we're not gonna rush him, not gonna rush him, but
now we're gonna rush him back in game four. Now
he has a timetable. It doesn't make any sense, makes
no sense. And then if you rush him back for
say a game six at the end of the month,
and then he gets what twelve minutes on the court,
I mean to make it a story, and the longer
(35:40):
it goes on, it's unavoidably a story. It's oversized compared
to what the payoff is gonna be. Because even when
he comes back, what's he gonna do? Shoot? I mean
this pensive get out there. We need points and just
start filling it up. Man, you take all the threes
you can. Just for the record, the Nets, this is
(36:01):
we talked about this last Sunday night on our show.
Here is that the Nets. If they get the seven seed,
that's the first round of Nets against Celtics. My goodness,
well that starts this Sunday afternoon. That's the big ABC
game when the first round begins this weekend. So the
question you have to ask, are the Nets good enough
to take the Celtics to six or seven games in
(36:21):
the first round to even have a chance of seeing
Ben Simmons for a few minutes in the first round.
Otherwise you're saying, oh yeah, we're not gonna play him
here at the end of this series. If we advance,
we we've got a few more days off, so maybe
in the next round. This is you thought the Trevor
Bauer story was getting kicking the can down, and that's
never gonna get resolved. What about the Simmons story? Yeah, Look,
(36:44):
will we see him next year? Probably? I mean I
gotta figure out to seem so that the Nets are
gonna want himing it on the court. That's the theory.
Suddenly to go from no, no, no, no and now
no now we can rush back no no, no, not
not by But the thing is, even without him the
first round, they can give the Celtics a scare because
all you really have to do in the playoffs to
give a team a scare in a playoff and make
(37:04):
a series long is is you got to win one
of those first two games on the road. And the
Nets clearly can do that because Kevin Durant can score
forty five in a game and Kyrie can score thirty
five with twelve assists. And then James Harden takes over
and harden the playoffs that we've uh, you know, I'll
tell you my James Harden playoff joke next hour, I
(37:25):
got I gotta get James hard standing. But I can
see them do that. I I can see them. I
can see them giving the Celtics a series and extending it.
But if it goes six seven games, he's gonna come
back and what and have limited minutes for what? I mean,
I don't know. I don't know why you would even
think his his his impact of the game is not
I'm gonna come in for a few minutes. If he
(37:45):
was an instant offense kind of guy. Okay, I get it. Now,
could he come in maybe and play really good, because look,
the guy's a phenomenal defender and you want him to
come back and at the end of games to shut
down the other team star. Sure, but again, the guy
hasn't played the guy. You're gonna trust him to out
there and do it that, You're gonna give him the
last you know, these limited minutes for it did? None
of it makes sense. I feel like it's it's just
(38:06):
face saving to think that maybe you can come back
so people will get off his back a bit. So
it doesn't do that he wants to come back. It
just keeps it a story with no resolution. Twitter at
