Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Greetings, Welcome inside the Jonah Toong Show. I'm your host,
Jonah Toong alongside me my new best friend, Jonah Toong,
King Tong, Steve de Sager. They're calling him King Tom.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Just for the record, it's not just a producer. That's
off tonight. Good evening to you. And there is a
picture making his major league debut and it says, I
met tonight's one earned run aloud in his five innings
and the Mets are destroying the Marlins.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
You know, And I, first of all, I want to
say this. I'm actually I was getting ready earlier about
about twenty minutes ago, and I'm going I know what
I'm gonna do. I know a fun thing I'm gonna do,
because you're gonna say, hey, Jonah Toong obviously a big
story major League Baseball Mets phenom Jonahtong starting tonight, I'm
gonna have to say, hey, one earned run, because you're
gonna here's the score, and people aren't gonna know that

(01:16):
Big Era by Francisco Lindor uh by the way, has
not had a great year defensively.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
But he still deserves two documentaries somehow.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yes, exactly, maybe three, maybe four documentary smot the smile
is just that good. But I'm gonna have to say
because I'm gonna say, hey, one earned run, but I
dig that you are already jumping at it. One earned
run for Jonah Toong.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Well, he had six strikeouts, no walks. That's an impressive
debut right there. For me, Now, it's almost one hundred
pitches for five innings, but I guess that happens more
often than not these days.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
I mean, look, and this is a big thing for
young hurlers coming up for the minor leagues. When you
are staked to a very a very small early lead
and you can hold on to it, you know, when
you're up one nothing for four or five innings, you
can hold lot like That's because Jonah Tong did tonight,
except it was more than that. Yeah, it was twelve
the second inning. I mean I could have I mean

(02:06):
I could throw about seventy maybe a little less than seventy.
I could probably throw in the sixties now, and I
could have held on to that lead, I think until
the fifth inning came and they had to take people
to take me in.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
If you could actually throw in the sixties, that would
be faster than some of the infielders we've seen throwing
this year, including recently to those who don't know the name,
and who does Frankly, Jonah Tong making his Major League
debut in New York tonight in the miners absolutely dominated
this year. The win loss record was only ten and five,
but the ear was one point four to three.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
That's King Tong. King?

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Is that yours?

Speaker 1 (02:40):
King?

Speaker 4 (02:41):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:42):
That was today and all the like. There's pictures of
him on you know, on top of the Empire State Building,
and I'm like, all of a sudden, he's King Tong, right,
So I looked it up to see if I can
make money on it, right, like, if I could get
the domain. And King Tong is actually the name of
a silverware distributor where they make real big tongs right
for you to use like for your Like I'm like, oh,

(03:03):
someone's already got King Tong. But I'm like, well Kingtong.
You gotta think somebody's got that. But no, it's like
if you need oversized tongs, like you go to Kingtong
and Kingtong dot com. Well you can get that.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Let's just say also that they were having a pitch
against the Marlins, which is a lineup full of fay
rays if you know what I mean. Oh appropriate start wow.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Twas Beauty killed the Savage beasteve.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah, there was no killing going on today.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Well no in the movie. I mean he cut you know,
I mean yeah, it was you know. All you all
you do is say, hey, faye, you're on your own.
I mean I got like seventeen planes that are coming
at me here, okay, and I can't get as you think,
this Empire State Building, I can't just hold on to
the top for like this is gonna go right, So
I mean I gotta be able to hold on here
and fight these planes.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Now, in that third jersey that the Mets have, it's
just the skyline, not necessarily the Empire State Building. Yeah,
since you're a tie in that we could make.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Here, here's the thing. If it's not now, it will
be by September. First. They will have those new jerseys
out there and ready to go for September.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
That's right, because this is the city that gave us insanity.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Yes, is he in the Hall of Fame yet?

Speaker 3 (04:09):
I missed that? Did he get in yet?

Speaker 1 (04:10):
No? Well he will. Well, first we got to get
Nolan McLean in, who like, Now we have to make it.
We have to make Lightning McLain happen, like we got
to make Lightning the plane in King Kong, like we
gotta make that Kachuga kachuga.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Because I'm sort of copyright infringement on the former, I think.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Okay, so yes, Big Night in Baseball will keep you
updated there.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
But by the way, it's Matt's fourteen to five over
the Marlins bottom.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Of the eighth. Yeah, here we go, Man.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
And Cincinnati lost again.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Red's already lost tonight. Here we go, Steve O getting ready.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
This is any thing you wished for. Early in this
week on the show.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
David Stern's waited until the last possible second to say, okay, now,
the two best pitching prospects in baseball are coming up.
It's like, could he used them six weeks ago when
we actually could have won the Elies?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
You know.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
It's like it's like that scene in Rocky Too. Sorry spoiler,
but in rock Too when when when Mickey's training Rocky
and he has him fight Righty the whole time, like
he's never gonna know right You're gonna fight Righty, it's
gonna So he starts fighting right, like all the scenes
where he's got his left arm tied to his body,
just punching the punching bag with his right arm. He's going,
how much more? Keep going? Rock keep going. So the

(05:17):
fight starts and Creed is off balance right because he's
fighting right. He expecting the southball. But then Creed starts
figuring it out and he starts really dominating. And I
remember watching the movie and everybody's going, come on, you
gotta fight left you gotta fight Lefty. It's like the
last possible second Mickey Yell's now switch and Rocky just
starts fumbling Apollo Creed right, You're like, and the whole
everybody's going, yeah, Like that's what David Starns did. He

(05:40):
went to the last possible second to say, Okay, here
come the great starting pictures from the miners, Like that's
what it is.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
It would be better if it came with the music
in the background, because there's your dramatic. We only have
a month left in this whole baseball season. There's still
gonna be five games back in the first place. Phillies tonight,
the mets.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Her I know, wait until the left. You hear that,
ding Dingy County. Sure, uh so again again? Big slate
Major League Baseball tonight and what feels like nearly a
full slate of college football.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
We have our first final in Army is just lost
in double overtime.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Not first. I'm a little upset because you know me,
Wagner College, all the summer camps I went to there.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
You yes, and boy slaughtered at Kansas.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
I hope they're enjoying the new stadium. They've done a
rebuild there.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Yeah. Not not often you see Kansas win a laugher
like this at home, but you know, Wagner College, So
I mean, uh, okay, it happens. But look the market
the night.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Was it Stony Brook at San Diego State last night?

Speaker 1 (06:38):
So yeah, I think so yeah, Stony Yeah, sure, everybody, Okay,
what's that. What's that check going to be? We got
a flat to Sandy?

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Can we get it's what we get? There? To Illinois
tonight they scheduled Western Illinois, which I'll at least, you know,
give teams nationally a pass. You get to play in
my mind, one regional whomever every year. I don't care
if you whip them. In this case, Oh, Western Illinois
just scored. I was gonna say, Okay.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
That's the big Pete Futech college football News insider, longtime
front of the show. He's joining us after the Colorado
game is over. He says every year should be and
I love this idea. He goes, the first week of
every college football year should be FBS versus FCS. FBS
everybody gets a home game, FCS gets a big check,
and that's the only time you play those games all

(07:26):
year long. Then you're into your schedule. It's basically a
preseason game where you figure things out. In theory. It is,
but you know, obviously some FCS teams are gonna are
gonna win, but by and large, that's what it should be.
And that should be the first week of college football
every single year. And I told him, I said, well,
the one thing they're gonna say is these wins all

(07:47):
count towards Bowl eligibility, right, yes, yes, absolutely absolute. Okay,
then we'll play the FCS games. But that's an that's
a phenomenal first week idea, because honestly, like these games
are great, right, Like we're gonna spend a lot of
time tonight talking about LSU Clemson obviously stay tomorrow, right,
and we'll get to Colorado in a second. But like,
these games are great, but like, do I really need

(08:08):
them week one? Or is just the pageantry of college
football coming back enough? And honestly, the pageant tree is enough.
It's hey, don't get me wrong. I love that we
have these games tomorrow and Syracuse, Tennessee. I'm a bundle
of nerves already, you know for this game. Although I
will say this, I guarantee you the team in Orange wins.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
But kind of a road game, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah? But I see, like, you know, just the pageant
tree is okay for me in Week one? You know,
I just want I want to see the teams. And
I know every FBS team would love that idea because
they'd say, okay, give us a chance to see what
we have, and maybe some players that we have starting
aren't the same when the lights go on for the
first time and you get a really good look at
your team.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Honestly, I'm okay with the pageants, but there are some
trips for Labor Day weekend where you know, it was
great seeing that Nebraska crowd at Kansas City. Not necessarily
a Friday night game, but you get my idea. It
is a holiday weekend that the NFL still that's the all.
That's the only holiday they don't own. At this point,
they they have said, no, we're not starting earlier, We're

(09:06):
not starting on a holiday weekend. So that belongs to
college football. Yeah, and I don't know if you will
quite get the travel for you know, fill in the
blank at Nebraska.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
No, but that Nebraska. I mean, look, you get to
see Mahomes a week early when you when you watch
Nebraska play, so I mean, it's fine. You get to
see Dominic Royola, who like, hey dude, come on, man,
you're really taking the whole Mahomes thing a little bit
too far. Okay, I get it. When I was younger,
there's athletes I idolize. I wanted to wear the same
T shirts as them. But dude, you're the starting quarterback
in Nebraska. Okay, I get it. I get the Mahomes thing,

(09:38):
but I mean.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
I won games right a lot of Yeah, I see.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
That, And I think of the guy who used to
walk around LA who looked like Pawgasol and would would
do the would make appearances like as a Pogosol impersonator.
He was in the news, right, Yeah, Like that's what
I think of. I'm like, dude, Okay, you're a starting
quarterback in Nebraska. You could be your own person out.
You can do that. The Holmes cosplay is not something
that really Oh you got to get past that a

(10:03):
little bit now, just little bit.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
But we've got enough games to tie us over tonight,
certainly in college football. I mean Wake Forest is only
up one now with two minutes to go against Kennesaw State,
and I mentioned Army lost to Tarleton State in double overtime.
We've got the Colorado home game that they're losing in
the third quarter to Georgia Tech.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Yeah, that is a that is the game right now.
That is the marquee game of the night obviously, and
you're seeing Deon Sanders, you know, trying to you know,
have his first season without his son, without Travis Hut,
without both his kids, and Travis Hunter. Caden Salter, who
was the number one sought after quarterback in the transfer
portal this offseason out of Liberty, Like I wanted Syracuse

(10:43):
to get him. He was a really good dual threat quarterback.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
And Willis, is there any eligibility Liberty transfer? Maybe you could?

Speaker 1 (10:54):
Well, Liberty has become that school. Hey come to Liberty
for a couple of years, Hey make it big and
then transfer. Now the nil are But like Salter is
is gonna be fine, right, Obviously he's got to get
used to a different level of competition. You saw Shador
Sanders is a little bit more immediate. But Salter has
played well enough tonight. Right, He's only throwing the football
twelve times, so it's not like Colorado is going nuts

(11:16):
throwing it and he's having a horrible night. Colorado to
say where they're gonna be right, Okay, some all I've
heard is Colorado's gonna be great. You know, Deon's a
great coach, continuing to recruit all these things, or Colorado's
gonna be terrible. You're talking about losing a guy like
Travis Hunter and and and Shador Sanders wasn't nearly as
good as we think he was. Maybe another quarterback they

(11:37):
would have won more games. This is the truth for Colorado.
Right They're down thirteen to ten right now to Georgia Tech.
Not the easiest opener. Haines King is a pretty decent quarterback.
Georgia Tech's an acc team. This They're not opening up
against Kennesaw State or alco of State. Colorado will be fine, right,
They'll be fine. They're be fine ish. Is this a

(11:59):
team that gonna win ten games? Probably not. Is this
a team that's gonna probably win six seven games and
be Bowl eligible? That's probably where you're at, because you know,
it's not like Colorado is bringing people in and here's
the next level of stars. This is a team that, hey, afterwards,
so top heavy with the first group that Dion brought in,
which included try like and it's it's hard to say

(12:21):
goodbye to a to a Heisman trophy where of the
played both ways and say yeah, we're just gonna restock.
Like Colorado, this is gonna be a team that, Okay,
we had that first level of great players. Now we're
gonna need a year or two to get back. Colorado's
gonna be fine. If I asked me what to expect
from them this year, I would expect them to have
sort of a five hundred ish record. Their schedule doesn't
really get difficult until the end of the season. They'll

(12:45):
probably you know, look to tonight's and and up in
the air game right now because it's they're gonna wind
up kicking a field goal here to try to make
it thirteen to thirteen. But you know, they played teams
that you know that they can beat. They remember, they
don't play in a tough a tough conference anymore. It's
the Big twelve, it's the new Big twelve.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
They did lose to Dominic Ryola last year just for that,
Yeah they did.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Oh they got pounded, but that was a game where
Shador Sanders uh said, Hey, did Riola get touched? That's
why didn't have a big game. Oh okay, But like
there's you know, Arizona State supposedly pretty good and that
they're gonna have them at the end.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
Of the Colorado was right in it in the conference
race heading toward Thanksgiving last year and they started four
and two, So they're fine. Tonight they were fine.

Speaker 1 (13:23):
's fine, There'll be a five hundred ish team. If
they they wouldn't surprise me if this is like as
this is like an eight and four Colorado team. Also
when its probably they're six and six Colorado team. Dion's
got it going fine. But it's not just suddenly here
come all the best players and all the best recruits
and we're Alabama and we're just rolling right through. No,
it's gonna be a little bit. But they will be fine.

(13:44):
It's not gonna be a terrible team. They're not gonna
suddenly start losing. If they were in the Big ten
or the SEC, I would say, yeah, look out like
there's gonna be some lumps they're gonna take. But in
the in the in the Big twelve where they sit
right now, Colorado's gonna bed. They'll be fine ish, there'll
be five hundred, they'll be going to a bowl game,
and it will be another year of success for Deoncea

(14:04):
Airs in Colorado, because that's really what if you lose
those kind of guys, Yeah, go into a bowl game
right after. That's a successful year.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
And you've mentioned that they're not throwing a whole lot tonight. Well,
Georgia Tech's not throwing a whole lot tonight, but each
team is averaging up until a moment ago, six yards
of carry on the ground. Six yeah, carry, so go ahey,
keep running it.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
I think there's sixty rushing attempts between the two teams
like this. It's like you're watching from you're watching a
game from nineteen ninety one.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
Or a Georgia Tech game from like five years ago.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
That is true. Yeah, yeah, that is true. That is true.
But the games field goal is good.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Colorado's tied, it's thirteen all on the third.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yeah. And I love the fact they have a bathroom
on the sideline, you know, coming back from bladder cancer,
he needs bad And I'm like, how is that not
an idea before now? Like, it's awesome that they did
that for him, thinking a little, but yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
That's why it hasn't got in until now.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
It's not like you can see into it, Steve.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
I mean it's you know, would you want to be
the guy in front of fifty thousand people?

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Now I gotta go to the bathroom. I'm I'm completely
okay with going to the bathroom. Like I I realized. Look,
I tell I tell Harmon this all the time, Like,
he's like, oh, when I go to a concert, I
want to be in the pit. I want to II
Harmon in your fifty Come on, man, I want to
be in the pit and want to be close to
the stage. I want to I'm like, okay, dude, come on, okay, stop,
stop for a second, I go. This is what I
want from a concert. I want to sit in the
aisle so I can get up and out really easy

(15:25):
if I have to go to the bathroom or get
you know something from uh the concession stand. I want
to be able to get up if if oh, here
comes our bass solo, I want to get up and
go do something. I want a comfortable chair, I want
a good eye line. Like That's what I want. And
and you know, being close to the bathroom is kind
of a thing now, so I'm like, I I dig that.
I would not I would not care one iota, Like, op,

(15:46):
gotta go to the bathroom.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
I go. I just read about it. But they should
put it in the blue tent.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
You yeah, they already haven't sponsored it's already it's it's seriously,
it's sponsored by someone, Like the bathroom is sponsor I'm
sure was right away he got a bathroom on the sideline.
I don't worry, coach, we got that sponsored.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
Man already owns that campus. This is just another room
on campus that he and he alone has a key to,
and nobody else on the school does.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, that's right. No one else can use it but him. Right,
he's only one with the key, like the janitor who
has all the keys on his ripple. I want to
get that key and get into any room in the school.
That's fantastic. No, he's the only one with the key.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
This is the ultimate executive washroom.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
Like what happens if his if is OC or one
of his coaches says, Hey, I really got to go
to the bath. Can I get the key like this?
Don't give it to Mosey, say no, go the way,
you can't do it.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
I want the photo sideline of him with his right
arm extended.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
No down there you by the way.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Update turns out Illinois did not allow a touchdown called back,
so just a short field goal a line I ranked
twelve thirty eight three over Western Illinois. Once it gets
to about a fifty point lead, that'll be where everybody
iss did tonight.

Speaker 1 (17:01):
So, so did you bet that tonight? Did you go
to DraftKings and bet that as well?

Speaker 3 (17:04):
No, certainly not. I just know. OK. When we were
talking about early blowouts, this is almost exhibit A for
the opening non Saturday games.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
So here we go again, a big night. Oh look already,
Army is zero to one Tarlton State. The Texans are
two and zero in double overtime thirteen thirteen Georgia Tech
and Colorado. Will keep you posted on this, of course
throughout the rest of the night. Look trust me, they
will be fine. But coming up next, a celebration of
college football continues with a story I've been waiting to

(17:35):

(19:54):
thirteen thirteen, late in the third quarter. We'll keep you
updated on this, but clearly, look, it's been a Ladder
Day phenomenon of the last decade or so. Where Labor
Day weekend belongs to college football right the NFL doesn't
play until the Thursday, Wednesday or Thursday after Labor Day
and you know, pretty much it's the one week of

(20:16):
the year where it's like, boy, we talk about college
football going into the weekend, we talk about it on
Monday and oh, okay, well that's great. So a big
weekend in college football. But a couple of big things
happening tomorrow. I know, I'm not talking about Dave Portnoy
being banned from the from Ohio State tomorrow, and it's
a big event the last game day that Lee Corso

(20:40):
is going to appear on, making his final appearance on
college game day. An incredible career. There's been a thirty
for thirty on the guy. You know, he was good.
He's ninety years old now. He has been with ESPN
for so long. Putting on the headgear has become a
cottage industry, and no matter how many time you see it,

(21:01):
it's still so much fun to see him put the help,
put the the the logo or put the head gear
out of the team he's picking. And it's no matter
why he's picking the home team he's not. It's just
it's just an awesome thing. And there's a story I've
wanted to tell about him for a long time because
you know, I worked with him a little bit at ESPN,
and you know, I don't know that he would remember me, uh,

(21:22):
you know, working because you know college football what he did.
But I worked more with Craig James, and Craig James
was on the show, and and Chris Fowler, you know
who was there when when he worked with Lee so long,
and but Lee Corso is one of those guys where
when he walks into a room, you just immediately feel better.
He walks into it, like when he walk in for
a production meeting, or he just comes in and he

(21:45):
is happy to work. He's happy to be there, he's
happy to see people like he was that guy, like
one of those big and it's not like he always
came in and he was always you know, would take
over a room, but just one of those people that
when he was there hanging around, you see him came
in the the the vibe of the room just went
way up like he was. He was that kind of guy.
And from what I gather the last you know, twenty

(22:07):
years or so, you know at ESPN, he's continued to
be that guy. And it's you know, it's something because
you know, Lee putting on the head gears become a
thing with college football for you know, for the past
thirty some.

Speaker 3 (22:16):
Odd years, and he has said he wants to be
remembered as a guy that put a smile on your face.
So that's good to hear. It was just off the camera,
not just on the camera. And I'm glad he gets
his moments, so to speak. It is time to retire here,
and I'm shocked he's had this many years on the
air after the stroke that he had, not just this

(22:38):
many years total. I'm glad he gets his moment.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
Now. I've never told this story. I've been waiting for
the right time to tell this story. Clearly now with
Lee Corso retiring tomorrow, this is one of my favorite
stories of all time. So back when I'm a production
assistant at ESPN in the early to mid nineties, was
working one night, or I'm working Saturday afternoon, sorry, Saturday afternoon,

(23:01):
college football Saturday. You can imagine how busy a college
football Saturday is at ESPN, where it's one hundred games
and you're trying to edit highlights and throw it on.
It's just remember that scene an airplane when when Jillye
Haggerty says, and we're also out of coffee and the
whole plane to like, that's what a college football Saturday
is like. At edd ESPN SO, Lee Corso is doing

(23:22):
game Day and this is when they're on all day. Right,
they do the game day in the morning, and they're
on in the middle and they do the cut ins,
they're on at halftime all day. Right, They're on all
day and it's Chris Fowler and Lee Corso and Craig
James are on the air. So at the end of
a day, it's like, you know, like like like seven o'clock,
they're all getting ready to sign off the air. The
production stead and this is just a random October they

(23:44):
decide to play a joke on Lee Corso and Craig James.
They decide to play and Fowler is in on it.
Fowler's in on it. They decide the production room decides
to play a joke on and they go, Okay, they
thought they were done. They go, wait, we got one
more segment. We have to we have to come back.
We have to do coming off whatever game it was.
We had to do one more segment. Guys, We're gonna
do the same thing we just did here. We just

(24:06):
have to finish. Chris when you get done, now you
throw it back whatever it is, we have one more
segment to go. Meanwhile, they were done, right, they were done,
but they said we have to do one more segment.
Lee and Craig are like, yeah, fine, whatever. They ordered
the same thing, same rundown. All the changes are for
Chris Fowler, right, because he's the guy in on it.
So they start the segment and this is basically just
a five minute recap of the big games of the day.

(24:28):
Here's highlights, a couple of quick comments from the analysts,
and they finish and they go back, you know, and
Chris Fallis says, okay, now we go back to Sports
Center wherever you had to throw it to at ESPN.
So they started, and they deliberately start making mistakes the
entire five minutes, the wrong camera, Like Chris Fowler starts talking,

(24:49):
the camera is on, Craig. James, go, Craig, the camera's
on You turn around and Craig is standing around not
knowing what's happening, and Chris is talking. And then Chris
makes a mistake with something and he says, what about
this game? And it was the wrong game, and they
were looking at him like he doesn't play Charlie Ward
doesn't play quarterback for Florida. It's Florida State like and
this whole thing, and you can see Craig and Lee

(25:11):
are like, what is going on? And then the camera
starts going. The camera goes to Lee when Craig is talking,
and the camera goes to Craig when Lee is talking,
and everybody's watching and laughing their asses off, and Craig
James and Lee cours are like, what is what is?
What is going on? Right? And Fowler starts saying, all right, guys, sorry,
we're having technical stuff here. We're gonna get our act
together soon. Then the camera just shows like Lee Corso's

(25:33):
hands folded together, and the producers like, Lee, Lee, unclench
your hands. The camera's on your hands, and he unclenches
his hands and puts them on the table right like
and no one it's it's hilarious. And it gets to
the end, and the last thing they do is is
Craig James says his final bit and the camera stays
on him and Chris Fowler starts talking and Craig James

(25:53):
looks at the camera and just shakes his head like
he's he's at it at this point, right. So then
Fowler at the very end he goes, Okay, you know what,
this is ridiculous, this is all you know, We're done,
and he starts taking his jacket off and taking his
mic Rod goes, let's go back to the studio and everything,
and Lee's Lee goes Chris, Chris like because fowlers getting
up away from the front, off the table and walking away,

(26:13):
and we're like, what is going on? And so they
think it's over, and then the producer goes, Lee, Lee,
the camera's on you stay on camera. We can't go
we can't go to yeah, stay on camera, and Lee
just they go, Lie, sit up, and Lee just sits
up and looks at the camera and smiles. And he's
like an uncomfortable like five or six seconds of Lee
just smiling at the camera because because Fowler's gone and

(26:34):
and and Craig James is it doesn't know what's going on.
And they finally stop and they're all laughing hysterically, and
Craig James goes, what was that? And they let him
in on the joke. They let him all in on
the joke, right, okay, And this is the best part
the Lemon the joke, and Lee Corso turns to Craig
James and goes, you knew this and didn't tell me,
and Craig James goes, I didn't know, and he goes,

(26:56):
you knew, and Craig Joe, I didn't know, and Lee
Corso sits up and goes blind you you knew you knew?
And Lee is laughing while he's doing like he's not mad.
He's just he's going blank you you knew what I'm watching.
Lee Corso go, Wow, he's going blank you right, you knew?
You knew? What Fowler you knew? And Fellows, Oh, absolutely
I knew. I was in Absolutely I knew. And Lee
is laughing and he can't get over it because right

(27:17):
away he gets the joke, like he gets that this
was really funny on the air, like he's just he
can't start. He's trying to pretend to be mad. And
Craig James for you know, for effect, but it said
Craig James going, Lee, I didn't know, Lee, I didn't know.
I didn't know. Lee at least, go Blanke, you you knew? Blank,
you you knew? And that became a thing we said
for like the next few months at ESPN, when someone

(27:38):
says something someone didn't know, we would look at each
other go, blank, you you knew, blank, you you knew.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
Beside from that cho you're talking about car.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Yeah, I mean I mean like you know in no,
not I mean on the air, I mean, like you know,
personal with somebody saying, hey are you are you know
you're working tomorrow night? Right? No, I didn't know I
was working. Blank, you you knew? Blank, you you knew?
And it was it And and that tape was legendary
because I remember seeing that and I said, because we
were all watching, going, oh my god, I go and
I said to the tape operator, can I get a

(28:07):
copy of that? He goes, yeah, sure, he gives me
a copy, and I'm like, I had the copy of
that tape. The next week, people go, hey, can I
get that tape? I got that. I want to see
the tape, want to see the Lee Corso thing. I
want to see the Craig James saying it's only like
four and a half minutes long, and it was absolutely
hysterical and to see Lee at the end, and the
thing is right away after a moment like that where
you think you just did the worst segment of television

(28:30):
of all time, because you don't know it's a joke,
And what they must have been going through for those
four and a half minutes right away to be let
in that it's a joke, and for Lee Corso to
get it right away and just start laughing at it,
like that's kind of who he was, like he was
he was pretending to be mad at Craig James, but
just to just blank you you and you knew, and
you knew and you and you and I'm going wow,

(28:52):
And I thought, you know, time to time over the
course of my life, I've thought about that and I said,
that's one of the best pranks I've ever seen.

Speaker 4 (28:58):
And it was.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
And like I said, that tape was I could have
sold that tape for I don't know, five hundred dollars.
Someone would have bought that from me to to happen.

Speaker 3 (29:05):
This is before things went viral. And also, by the
way it sounds like in those studios, it's kind of
the opposite reaction as the show. We say, Chris Berman
tape that mates made the rest that was not a
practical joke.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
Yeah, no, there's certain tapes. What No, you're right, there's
certain tape. Usually most tapes involving Bino Cooker hysterical and
they're they're hysterically funny for a reason.

Speaker 3 (29:27):
Uh. You know who used to co host with Lee
Corso in the early days, is there?

Speaker 1 (29:31):
Oh? Yeah, yeah. He would say, you know, Lee Corso
and I used to do shows together. That's back when
Methuselah would be favored by seven points in a big
game like that. That's what he would say. That's back
when when Jonah was favored in the flood. But then
you know how that went, you know, like.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
But again you know what say, like.

Speaker 1 (29:54):
We did that show from the arc and it was
really tight because the control room you're trying to fit
to of every animal on the on the boat, and
it gets gets crowded in that control room.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
Like that's what it's And he no doubt predicted Moses
to win two Heisman trophies.

Speaker 1 (30:12):
Well, if you part the Red Sea, you should win
at least one Heisman trophy.

Speaker 3 (30:16):
Well the problem was he thought Ron Paulus was the
next Moses. And we all know where that predictions was.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
You know, he was friends with him later on in
the quarterback. Yeah, because because Palace then became the quarterbacks
coach at Notre Dame. And he I remember when I
would interview with which worshiped right exactly, yes, and he
because and he always he he gravitated towards me.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
Was college football on ESPN before Leek orso Oh.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Yes, he Bino was the best, right, I mean I
had him on my my show at ESPN, and he
was awesome, and he was so good, and he gravitated
towards my show. He says, you know why, because I
heard you you say no Tre Dame the right way
you say no Tre Dame. I never said Notre Dame.
We see Notre Dame. No, you're saying it Notre Dame.
And he would come on and tell all kinds of

(31:04):
stories and U Bino A Bino was the best. Uh.
He would always have have great stuff to say and
and and always have these great stories. He has a
he had a a knowledge of the final score of
bowl games going back to like nineteen fifty five.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
Yeah, it's like some baseball beat writers can actually tell
you who made the last out of each World Series.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
It's really astounding, Like I would say, being a final
score nineteen fifty seven Sugar Bowl that was West Virginia
beating Texas. It was it was like twelve to ten,
and I would look it up twelve nine right like,
And I know Bino's not looking up on a computer
because he didn't have a computer. He did, No, he didn't.
He never didn't have a computer. It's nothing else. So
he just knew this off the top of said Bino.

(31:49):
Nineteen seventy five Orange Bowl, Come on, that was no
tredame twenty eight. Yeah, I'm like, okay, And he would
have it right like he had that kind of knowledge.
But I mean, you see, you know the end of
an there, you know, for guys like Lee Corso, it's
been He's been such a fabric of college football for
so no matter how many yes, uh, you know, inventions
of the set they do and look to.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
And he coached one of the early holiday bowl games,
the thing he didn't exist here for in the late seventies.

Speaker 1 (32:16):
Yeah, I mean, and you know, and the thing is
to be fair, like, do I say ESPN has a
big issue covering the NBA. Yes, they cover the NBA poorly.
They have never figured out how to cover. It's why
they're bringing in all the TNT guys. Now they've never
figured out the right people on the set. They get
rid of people who were good, like the NBA, it's
just a disaster. But they do college football incredibly well,

(32:37):
incredibly well, and and even though that you change through
hosts change to everything, like Lee Corso has been. No
matter what kind of football fan you are, you're talking
about a generation plus of watching on a Saturday of
Lee Corso, you know, taking off the head gear now,
and that's birthing all the different things we see now
and all the personality now that you see in college

(32:57):
football shows, whether it's gonna be Dave Portnoyd tomorrow for
Fox or Pat McAfee, whoever it is, like, Lee Corso
was the guy that brought that great sense of lightness
to a set and knowledge and experience and just a
fun guy to watch talk about college football.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
And he was hosting that Saturday morning show before headgear
and before they were even doing the show live from campuses.
That's how long he's been on the show. Let's get
through the update because we can update the Colorado game
going on right now. It is early fourth quarter and
Georgia Tech has scored to take the lead twenty to

(33:32):
thirteen over the Buffalos. We've got about twelve minutes left
in this one. Plenty of college football tonight and a
massive amount tomorrow. But twelfth ranked Illinois right now it
on leads forty five three over Western with eight minutes
to go on Fox TV, Auburn has scored. Now leads
twenty four to ten at Baylor late in the third.
Also in progress, UNLV's second quarter leads seventeen to seven

(33:55):
at Sam Houston. And the other games of note Our finals.
And yeah, Wagner did lose at Kansas Jayhawks forty six
to seven the final.

Speaker 1 (34:03):
Sorry, they'll get it back at basketball. Oh no, wait, no,
that's what happening.

Speaker 3 (34:07):
They got Dwan Wagner, some of the Wagner.

Speaker 1 (34:12):
Hey Hall of Famer Billy Wagon Apstate one.

Speaker 3 (34:15):
At Charlotte wake Forest Edge Kennesaw State ten to nine.
Michigan State beat Western Michigan twenty three six. And it
was Tarleton State winning at Army in double overtime. Of course,
there is a game on Fox TV tomorrow of note
noon Eastern time. It's number one Texas playing at number
three Ohio State. There's also Utah at UCLA late Saturday

(34:36):
night on Fox The New England Patriots release safety Jabrill Peppers.
Women's number one Arena Sableca advanced at the US Open,
and number four Jessica Bagoula won a third round match
in the WNBA Atlanta with a home win against Dallas
one hundred to seventy eight. The Dallas Wings nine and
thirty one this year and to Major League Baseball, yes,
the Mets did win. The Mets hit six home runs

(34:59):
tonight in New Yor York beat Miami nineteen to nine.
Juan Soto with his thirty third round tripper of the year,
Pete Alonzo with his thirty first, and the win to
Jonah Tong in his major league debut five innings, one
earned run aloud.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
The Mets were up nineteen to four. They brought in
Luis Torrenz to pitch their catcher. He couldn't get out
of the ninth innings, so the Mets had to bring
in a real pitcher to finish. They had to bring
in Ryan Stannik.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
So much for saving the Bullphad lately.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
Stank hasn't been much better than a position pitcher, but
they brought it. It's like, oh, we can't win this.
We got to bring in a real pitcher to finish
out this game.

Speaker 3 (35:34):
The Yankees are leading ten to two at the White
Sox in the bottom of the ninth at Minnesota Twins
ahead of the Padres seven to four in the bottom
of the seventh, Dodgers Diamondbacks scoreless in the third. The Giants,
who won five in a row, lead to one over
the Orioles bottom of the first. We already had wins
for Milwaukee and for Philadelphia. Saint Louis won in ten
innings at Cincinnati seven five.

Speaker 1 (35:55):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O. Jason Smith Steve
de Seger in for Mike harm tonight. Coming up next,
we got the play of the day and our first
big pick of the weekend Texas Ohio State which Titan
walks away with the victory. That's next right here, Jason Smith,
Steve de seg You're in for Harmon. This is Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (36:27):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with Steve de
Sager in for Mike Harmon Colorado A half yard away
from tying this game up against Georgia Tech first and
goal on the half yard line after a Caden Salter
scramble twenty to thirteen, eight minutes to go in the
fourth quarter. More on this game coming up in a bit,

(36:49):
but time now for the Play of the day, brought
to you by tire Rack. For over forty years, ty
Rack's been helping customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Ship fast and three backed
by free road hazard protection with convenient installation options like
mobile tire installation. Tirerac dot com is the way tire
buying should be. Well. One team in the Big ten

(37:11):
off to such a big start, and when you're off
to that big start and Steve Desager won a lot
of money betting on you, you get to be the
play of the day. Fagan is the back of the pistol,
look snap back to Altmeyer looks to throw to the
end zone.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
It is caught touchdown Tanner Arkin.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
First touchdown on the air. Aldmeyer to Tanner Arkin and
that looked pretty easy. Lear Field Sports on the call.
It's been pretty easy for Illinois against Western Illinois. The
number twelve Ranke fighting line. I lead Western Illinois fifty
two to three with about five and a half minutes
to go in the fourth quarter. Steve, you had Illinois

(37:52):
giving forty. So I think they're feeling pretty good right now.

Speaker 3 (37:54):
They were only favored by forty. Aldmeyer has three touchdown
passes now by by the way, plus the team has
over two hundred yards rushing and over six yards of carry.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
I mean, look, Illinois is a team like every year
there's that one team in the Big teng Like we
talk about Michigan and Ohio State. We're going to get
to Ohio State, Texas in a second. You know, sometimes
it's Wisconsin or you know, but really it's it's Ohio State,
Penn State, and Michigan. But every year there's that other
team that boy, hey, if not for the heavyweights, we'd

(38:25):
be talking a lot more about them. And Illinois might
be that team this year. I mean, Brett Bilma has
done a pretty good job. You know the left you
can feel it coming here and now suddenly you know,
preseason top fifteen team and all obviously tonight it's Western
Illinois there you know, the winning in a route, but
they could be that big, that thorn in the side,
Big ten team this year that hey, if we squeak
out an extra spot in the college football playoff, maybe

(38:48):
it's Illinois.

Speaker 3 (38:49):
It is a guy that's been well paid to be
the coach there, so maybe my standard the bar is
a little bit high. They need to be talked about
in the top two for what he's earning, because you know,
in the SEC where he earned a lot of money.
Pretty much everybody coach is a zillionaire, whether you actually
win something or not. And then he goes to Illinois. Okay,

(39:12):
he's got a great track record. You know, the Wisconsin years,
we're superb. Okay, now you can't be stumbling against Duke
next game or no, no, no, no, no no.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
Listen, and if they don't win, blame Lovey Smith. It's
Lovey Smith's fall.

Speaker 3 (39:24):
So that's sir, that's the name. Still, believe me, that's
a name that's still on the tips of tongues in
the Alaini nation.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
So obviously we are getting forward towards the first weekend
of college football with all the top twenty five teams.
Tonight's the appetizer for what we're getting tomorrow. Colorado, just
as in the end zone, they tie this game up
with Georgia Tech at twenty a piece. Kdan Salter throwing
a touchdown. Texas and Ohio State more points than you

(39:55):
think in this game. Arch Manning gets better as the
game goes on. Ohio State is replacing a ton of talent.
They're replacing coaches in different positions. They have a new quarterback.
Texas is gonna win the battle at the line of scrimmage.
They're gonna win this game thirty one to twenty three.
Their defensive line is gonna make it tougher for Ohio State.
Ohio State will be fine, but this is Hey, You're

(40:17):
replacing a lot coming off the national championship. It happens,
and arch Manning will make a good amount of plays
with his legs more than his arm, getting used to
new receivers now in Texas. But he's the real thing.
He's had enough experience last year. He's not gonna walk
in and suddenly boy playing at Ohio State in the
word's gonna be a bit. No, he's gonna be just fine.
They'll put up a lot of points. And I think

(40:38):
there's a reason why people are jumping to Texas here,
which has happened over the course of the last few hours,
the betting line has changed. Now Texas is favored by
a point in a lot of books, or a point
and a half somewhere. But I will take arch Manning
over Julian Say in game one and a team with
a little bit more coming back than than they do.
So I will take Texas thirty one to twenty three.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
That's a lot more points score that I am guessing
for this game, not just because it's two good teams.
I believe whether it's actually one and three, I believe
these are two excellent teams and will be very good
teams in the college football landscape this year. But first
game and not getting to you know, there's no preseason
in college football, not getting to get your feet wet,

(41:19):
I'm not sure it'll be that high scoring.

Speaker 1 (41:21):
All right, there we go? So hey, so Steve de
Sager says, take the under, Take the under. He hates
march Manning. Steve de Sager hates march Manning, hate archman
So again, we'll preview the other big games throughout the
show tonight, but coming up next, Wait, do we tell
you what was said today the day after by both
the Cowboys and Micah Parsons after the trade that shook

(41:44):
the NFL. This is Fox
