Fox Sports Radio, Greetings, Welcome inside, Happy Friday, Happy night
one of the college football Playoff. It's the Jason Smith
Show with my base friend Mike Harmon. Let's get it
on live from the Fox Sports Radio studios where I
(00:45):
tell you it looked like Michigan was thirty some odd
minutes away from Kaylin de Boor, and now they might
be thirty minutes away from Kenny Dillingham. That's how fast
it changes. A seventeen to nothing Oklahoma lead is a
with a block punt and a pick six, and we
are at halftime at seventeen a piece, with some curious
(01:08):
coaching and penalty flags being thrown at the end of
the first half. Mike, we are picking up where we
left off last night with the Rams and the Seahawks. Well,
that's just it, right.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
I just thinking about it as that is replaying in
the studio as I'm watching it. Literally, the weird odd
disputed two point conversion play literally just got replayed on
this television. And when thinking about this first half, right,
you got the punter going and he drops the ball,
ends up in a block, you get the miscommunication with Matier,
(01:39):
ends up with a pick six. And then you mentioned
the coaching thing where we've got a penalty in the
final minute, Like when you're at youth soccer and they
tell you you got to get those umbrellas back off
the sideline.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
I need my space, man, I need my space.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
So we had a penalty there that gave Oklahoma, in theory,
a little bit of an extra chance. Nothing came of it,
but sir, there was a delay and a lot of
arguing and disputing, and but the fact that we have
a tie game at halftime, shocker. I came in in
seventeen nothing and I'm like this, get this looks like
it's getting ugly fast.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah, you're singing half, You're singing him, You're singing hell
to the victors at this point, and Calen de Bori's
coach in the second half wearing a Michigan hat. Yeah,
let's go. I'm gonna be here after the game anyway.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Could they slip to impose one on his head in
the They got some wizards in the technical department there.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
I thought it was real. It was really bad form
for At the halftime interview with Holly row And she
asked him, Hey, what do you think to do in
the second half? And he said it. She goes, thanks coaching,
he said, go blue at the end. I don't think
you needed to do to me. Come on, man, you
can't do you gotta just you know you're coaching Alabama.
You can't do that. And he did that smile where
you got the little gleam in his teeth right with
(02:50):
the wink. I mean that whole thing.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
What's interesting is they also have a We were talking
about it a little bit last night, you and I.
The second broadcast ESPN two is the Oklahoma broadcast. Guess
what I was listening to is things unfolded in the
second half.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Wow, that got odd fast. So how did we get here?
We got here courtesy of the Play of the Day,
brought to you by ti Iraq for over forty years,
Tyrack's been open, customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Ship fast and Free backed
by free Road has protection with convenient installation options like
mobile tire installation. Tireraq dot Com is the way tire
(03:27):
buying should be. And when you get a big pick
six to tie this game up at seventeen at halftime,
you get to be the play of the day.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Bama putting eight men up initially now dropping.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
Back a p a pick at the forty five to
the thirty, to the twenty, to the ten to the
five touchdown safe and Brown takes it to the house.
BAMA changed its coverage and the Sooners throw.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
It right to us. There was on the Battle Radio network.
Hey threw it. He's not wrong. I mean, that's why
he caught it on the sideline. They threw it right
to us, and I caught it and I handed it
to another guy that could actually run it back on
the field. They threw it right to it.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
But also akin to what we saw last night in
that mutant Thursday night football game, remember Sam Darnold's second
pick when the defensive lineman just backed off and it's.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Like, hey, look what I found.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Same thing here, It's like he materid throws it thinking
he's got the out route. Nope, receivers going up, So
the defensive bags like thank you and start sprinting back
the other way.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Just absolute chaos, bedlam. The crowd shots.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
I mean, I wonder what song you pick as the
appropriate response to that, because they stayed on the crowd
for a good three minutes with all the shock and
fear suddenly taking over that stadium.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Now what you want to talk about? This crazy penalty
agains stuff you hardly ever, you know, I'm thinking back.
The last time I can think about something like this
was I think it was the what the ninety four
NFC champ game where the Cowboys were getting killed by
the forty nine ers and they were coming back and
they were forcing the Niners into a punt situation, and
Barry Switzer got some kind of crazy penalty for yelling
(05:11):
at a ref or running into a ref and it
gave the Niners a first down and they scored a
touchdown and the Cowboys didn't win. But near the end
of the first half, you had Alabama and Oklahoma again
tied at seventeen. Alabama looked like they were gonna get
the football back. They had forced a fourth down. They
called time out with twenty five seconds left on the clock.
They were gonna make Oklahoma punnet again because you know,
(05:31):
when you get a block punt, you're gonna make that
team punnet as many times a can. And the rest
of the game except the flag goes on the field
and you see Kitlin de Bord just lose it because
the penalty is sideline interference. Somehow someone ran into a
referee and you're wondering, okay, what the hell happened, And
you know Chris Fowler and Kirkirbstreet to say, we're gonna
get it for You're gonna get it for you. It
(05:52):
is forty yards downfield, right, And I'm glad you mentioned
the game last night because this plays into something big
in sports the last couple of day. So forty yards downfield,
the official is backing up on the sideline. He's in
his territory and he backs into someone on the sideline
and the flag goes up right away, fifteen yard penalty.
(06:14):
And Oklahoma has a chance now with twenty two seconds
to go, because they're near midfield. Maybe they get in
field goal range. Now they didn't wind up getting into
field goal range. We'll get to that. But here's a
penalty sideline interference that is called. And they showed the
replay and you see the official he's backing away, backing
away and he runs into a guy. Now he's forty
yards away from the play, and this is a non call.
(06:36):
This is a non call. But this gets into why
when Puka Nakua says refs are human after all, right,
they just want to be on TV. They want they want,
you know, they're texting their buddies to show hey, this
is why. You know, look at me. I just called
a penalty here. We told you the other night. It's
not about the referees want to be on TV. But
the referees want to put their impart, their will on
(06:58):
the game. They want to be heard, they want to
be a voice. Referees sometimes come out there like the
two teams on the field. No, there's three teams. It's
the two teams playing and there's us. And I tell
it from every from every youth coach game that I could.
Referees and and umpires want to be a part of it.
And and they they want to put their stamp on
the game. And this is what Pukinakua means when he
(07:20):
says refs are human. This is a referee backing down
the field runs into a guy, doesn't get knocked down,
you know, gets knocked off his off his balance a
little bit, but he stands up and he throws that
flag up in the air like ah no, I don't
know if he warned the sideline before now, but this
is something where you know what, you kind of walk
away from this, but the guy got emotional and he
wanted to be wanted to punish the sideline for this,
(07:42):
so I threw the flag. And now potentially it could
have been a three point swing or more, and you
could tilt the power of the game because you got
mad that you ran into somebody on the sideline. Now
you're not supposed to, right, and they should be out
of the way. And you saw the referees when they
talked about it in the in the booth and and
and uh, hey listen, that's the referees area. Now I
understand that. I get that it's forty yards downfield. It's
(08:04):
a mistake. The referee didn't get injured. He decided to
get emotional, So I'm throwing the flag. This is where
I'm completely on board with Pookinakoua when he says referees
want to do certain things, why they call certain penalties.
They're human, after all. That was an emotional decision at
the refmade, and it's easily a thing that you could
just say, hey, listen, final warning, warning, whatever it is
(08:25):
you tell the coach that happens again, it's a fifteen
yard penalty. Again. I don't know what's going on. You know,
on the if this has happened before earlier in the
game and the referee warned them. But this is the
college football player. If you have forty yards downfield, man,
nobody came to the game to watch you throw that flag.
But yet I want to be part of it. I
want to throw a flag and I want people to
know what that guy because I was embarrassed because I'm
(08:46):
doing my job and I run into somebody. I'm going
to be a highlight and people were laughing at me
behind my back, and I heard the sideline laughing because
I ran into the guy. So yeah, so I'm gonna
throw a flag. You gotta be better than that. You
have to be one hundred percent better than that. That's
a non flag throw. But yet here the officials, this's white.
Pokinakua said it, and I can't disagree with him.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah, I just wonder if there had been a warning,
and we never really got clarity in that regard as
the the broadcast was going forward. Right, Uh, but we
have the incidents, uh and the rules analyst as he
got impassioned about it. You've endangered me. You've endangered me
by being on the sideline, which I don't think he's wrong.
(09:23):
I mean, because what if the guy takes a false step,
then all of a sudden, Hey, we're we're down a
sideline ref because he took a you know, took an
a c L because of a bad plant.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
I don't know. I mean I I got a side
with the referee on this one.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
As long as you look at player haters, you've gone
through the protocols. Again, we're wondering about the warning, right,
you had a sideline warning.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
I still think with the warnings, you could have not
thrown the flag on that. It's not about you, it's
it didn't affect the play. It didn't affect It wasn't
done maliciously, it wasn't done where the guy put his
foot out. Hey, watch it's some of the trip the
guy going down the field. It's one of those. It's
a big sideline. Pay attention away, pay attention to where
you are. You gotta knowles, Yeah, no, I get it.
But okay, so you think that was worth it that
(10:09):
if if that's the three points that decides the game,
that's worth it for that, for that penalty throne, Well,
I can't, I can't. I can't officiate that way. That's
not the way it's supposed to be officiated. No, no,
it's not everything.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
No, no, no, no no, but I try to know.
But you're not doing that as an official. You shouldn't
be saying is this going to affect the game out
final outcome.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Of the game. It's either a penalty or it's not. Yeah,
I don't think that's a side. It's not. That's fine,
but by the letter of the law, it's a penalty. Well,
you go to throw the flag anytime a guy goes down,
and if there's a guy near him could say I'm
throwing a flag. You were in my way, creeping up
on the sideline because he wants a better vantage point.
(10:53):
You know, go and buy a ticket in the fifth row.
Look at that referees are not going to call in
into the show and say we love you, my just
so you know, I don't know the reason you're not
going to do that.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
All I'm saying is you've got to pay attention if
you see the guy backtenal and get the hell out
of the way. Otherwise potentially there is chaos. And I
get it, it's forty yards downfield. They didn't throw a
forty yard pass. But in the end, look, no harm,
no foul. But it's certain because right they get nothing
out of it that they get the extra twenty five
(11:23):
seconds runs off because they had no timeouts left and they.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Called a bad play.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
How about calling the bad play where guy's got no
chance of getting out of balance? How about we yell
at the coaching staff for that.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Well we'll get to that in a second. But I
just want you. I want to add because this is
if you're if you're trying to get into the NFL
officiating program or a collegeable fan, I'll write you a
letter of recommendation if you want it. Because I could
see you in the jaunty hat striped outfit call. I
could see you out there running up and down the field.
No trying to do that to get in No, I
will my knees would not take that. I'd be that
(11:53):
slow guy.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Why, Like that just hurts okay, like even even the
last couple of days, like my body ain't felt right.
I'm not sick, but like everything's sore.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
And you'd have to be the replay official. You'd be
the red I could be the rules analysts, like, Hey,
that dope's got to get out of the way. Wait, wait, wait,
that's my sideline. Get out of the way, sir. We
don't call players on the other team dopes. That's not something.
I don't care he was a dope. I don't give
(12:23):
a crap.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
I would be equal when calling both sides dopes if
they did something to affect the integrity and sanctity of
the game and put my officiating crew in danger.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Mike Harmon standing up for the referees here, somebody's got
to Uh. Now, you bring up the other part of
this is it didn't turn into any any points because Oklahoma,
you talked about the play call. They don't get out
of bounds, they have the ball at midfield, they have
a chance to throw a hail Mary. They are they
could they had a time out or whatever you want
(12:55):
to do. If you want to call time out right
away and try to throw a quick five yard out
so you can get your kicker out there, and instead
they just let the time go to halftime. I felt
like I'm watching Aaron Glenn coach this game, like he's
the guy not throwing hail mary's in the first half
of the season for the Jets. When yeah, we got
the ball at midfield, final play the first half, let's
just go to halftime. Let's not take a chance to score.
Might not that you weren't good to score, but you
(13:17):
know what, you got the ball at midfield, throw it
up at half to try to get points there. What
are you doing. You're doing the other team a favor.
Oh you're just gonna go to halftime. Great, Hey, we're
happy with that. Call time out, throw a hail mary
or call a time out, try to throw something really
quick that takes like three seconds, but games of five
yards off the sideline. And it said it was now
we're going to half time. You got the guy coming
out in his short pants, big left left leg. He
(13:40):
just won the girls or award. Come on, sand Down,
didn't even get a chance. I doubt at the end
was back like that was worse to me than the
official calling the penalty.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I mean that was like that face that made sense. Okay,
by the letter of the law, that's a foul. This
is just coaching malfees is at the end of a half.
How are you not screaming on the sideline, Hey, let's
let's call time out. Hey, let's call time out, coach,
coach time out? How does nobody calls even in the booth,
They're like they're letting the clock run. Like there was
(14:11):
just these pauses as they're going back and forth. I
was waiting for the picture and picture of the two
of them looking at each other with their arms stretched
out as if to say, what the hell are we
watching here?
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Yeah? I mean are there are there some analytics I
don't know about that says throwing a hail mary at
the end of the first half is not the right thing.
I mean, that's the only thing football karma.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
I mean, I don't know that it's a direct disney
that you could both like the teams that execute.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
A hail mary at the end of a half go
on to lose most of the I don't know. I
realized there's got to be some kind of analytics thing
that I just thought, Oh yeah, yeah, so that this
is why we don't throw hail Mary's at the end
of the first half. The analytics say that your percentage
of winning goes down. Oh really it does. Yeah, because
potentially if you get a touchdown, that would just upset
the other team and they would come out in the
(14:58):
second half with more energy. So yeah, we've done that,
look and saw that that's actually happened. Like I don't understand,
I'd be really.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, the curiosities of the college football bowl season with.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
A coaching job potentially on the line, I mean, there's
so much to it. It's great. Man, What a Friday
night Oklahoma could be a little at Michigan could be
less than thirty minutes away from Kaylin de Borr or
Kenny Dillingham. Guys, a lot of interested people watching this game.
Early in the third seventeen seventeen, Oklahoma has just failed
(15:30):
to convert on third and six. They'll be punting in
theory to Alabama because we know Oklahoma's had some trouble.
A catchable ball is dropped in the middle field, a
little bit behind the receiver but still should have been caught,
should have been a first down. So Alabama getting the
football back in a game where it looked like they
were absolutely dead and buried seventeen. Nothing shocking their comeback here.
(15:51):
But then again, remember both of these teams, neither their
offenses have played well the last few weeks. They kind
of been a couple of teams that may be a
little bit on vapors. But we're getting an entertaining game.
We thought we could have seen something that was completely
a blowout. Instead we got a seventeen to seventeen game. Now,
early in the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
You danced right up along the line of neither team
should be here. I can hear that trailing as you said.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
That's oh man. So we got more on this coming up.
But it's a big football Friday as well. We're previewing

Coming away Fox Sports Radio The Chason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon. Now, maybe Michigan's gonna wind
up with Brent Venables at the end of this game
instead of Kaitlin de bor Ah A seventeen nothing Oklahoma
leag not only is gone, but now they trail Alabama
twenty four to seventeen. Ty Simpson Simpson A I'll remember
(17:46):
that name. A thirty yard touchdown pass to Brooks make
it a twenty four to seventeen lead. Now for Alabama
eleven and a half to go in the third quarter.
Now Simpson two touchdowns on the night. Hey, I think
Michigan fans will be happy. Let's we'll take either one
of these guys either way. And if Venables blows this
big lead and we all right, man, okay, we'll take it.
That'll be fun.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
He got into the end zone and he started scrolling.
Brooks was here in the corner.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Of the end zone.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
So we'll have more on this game. Oklahoma trying to
get back in at first play mateir Is sacked everything
coming up Alabama right now. Uh but time to break
down all the big news in the NFL. Joining us
now on the hot line another big football Friday. Nobody
better than longtime NFL inside or check him out in
the thirty third team. He is a Pro Football Hall
(18:35):
of Very Good voter, and he has written letters about
how the referees just want to be on TV and
that's all they're good for. It is Jason Cole, Jay Cole,
what's happening?
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Man? Where's my inter music?
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Well we thought it would be really serious, you would
say something fun.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah, okay, okay, I gotta hang out going on?
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Here Here we go, Here we go, hang on and
here comes Jason, I can't.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Perform without my intro music.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Right, I'll do it for you. We'll do it again.
I got afraid. Here we go, hang on, hang on,
here we go. Hang on. That's not it now, Mary
I got I got it, Mary, I got here?
Speaker 3 (19:16):
It is? Here? Is it right? Here?
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Hang joining us now in the hot line thirty third
team Pro Football Hall of Very Good voter. Oh as
checks rock, it is Jason Cult deep deep deep deep
deep deep deep deep.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
We should start playing the theme from Barney Miller.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Barney Miller's done. You have to explain the millennials who
Barty Miller was.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
Well, any guy you get some deep base followed by
some horns, we're in let's go.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Yeah, you got a game on Saturday, Saturday?
Speaker 1 (19:57):
How about that? Do you believe the Packers injury report
they list eighteen guys.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Somebody must have asked questions about that, just to just
and they're now messing with the reporters. When they list
eighteen guys, it's because the coach is fat up with
a reporter asking any questions. I mean, I mean that's
usually what it is. It's like, oh, you want to
know about that guy? Here, we'll list everybody who has
(20:26):
even a hangnail. That's what we're going to do.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
So that's a Belichick thing to do. He used to
do that a long time ago, like nine to twenty
five people on the injured list because somebody pissed them off.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Yeah, well, it's.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
Also look for and Ben Johnson and either they love
each other or they hate each other. We haven't quite
figured it out yet.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
They there ain't no love there. That's not that's that's
not love. That's that's like getting close to the Schwartz
Arba relationship.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Awesome, Okay, and you what's your deal man? What's your
deal man?
Speaker 3 (20:59):
What's your that's the best ever?
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Wait, so what what's better? What's better the Schwartz Harball
relationship or Puka Nakua and officials? Which relationship is better?
Right now?
Speaker 3 (21:10):
It's Harbo versus Schwartz because you've got that for that
whole exchange. What's your deal man?
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Like?
Speaker 3 (21:16):
Yeah, like Pokah's like, don't don't go here, like this
is this is silly and you're making stuff up. They're
not making calls because they just want to get on television.
That's not what it is. I mean, I just you know,
there's some stuff that I don't believe. Yeah, are some
of those guys like trying to get the next TV gig? Maybe,
(21:41):
But I you know, I just don't see that. That's
not what I think guys are just they're legitimately trying
to do their job, and it's a complex job that
the league continues to make harder and harder. And the
worst thing that the league does is they make those
guys think way too much. And that's why you get
really bad efficient because they think too much instead of
just react to make calls. So enough of that. The
(22:04):
Pooka thing just doesn't really impress me. It's taking shots.
It's taking shots at people who are, for the most part,
trying their best and have an impossible job. That's that's
what he's doing. And it's also it's so easy to
take shots at officials like that. That's like shooting fish
(22:25):
in a barrel, like, Oh, I'm going to really go
out on a limb and I'm going to criticize officials.
Congratulations fifty you've done with every guy watching a television
on Sunday does eighty five times when he goes on Twitter. Yeah,
you're a big man. Congratulations dude.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
That's like when you see in the magazine's stars, they're
just like us. Look, they pump their own gas, they
go to Costco. They're just like, hey, Pookas can just
like I can criticize the official. It's what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah exactly.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
I mean.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
I'm not impressed by that criticism. I mean, I you know,
I know why he's getting a lot of attention for it,
but that cratism doesn't impress me. Like, if you want
to come up with a criticism of how the league
handles officiating, and you want to say we made the
job way too complex and we were begging for inconsistent
(23:20):
officiating because of the way that the NFL does ask
those guys to do their job, I'm all ears, but
just you know, like ripping guys because you think they
want to get on television. Now, I'm not buying that. Sorry,
that's that's that's old hat. You know, that's that's not
that's not thoughtful analysis. So but whatever, he's a d player.
(23:41):
I like watching them play.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Only a twenty five thousand dollars Fine, so yeah, let's
let's I can't wait to follow more football players this
weekend on Twitter.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
But as a game.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
I mean, Matthew Stafford and Sam Donald put on a
show that was pretty awesome.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
I got one. Are the odds of hitting three straight
two pointers? YEA like to pull that out. And that's
why I don't congratulations and see the Seattles right, and
hell of a win, way to come back, way to
stay in it. But if you walk away from that game,
if you're a Seattle fan saying, oh, we're clearly better
(24:18):
than the Rams, no you're really not, because for basically,
for the better part of fifty to fifty two to
fifty five minutes, they dominated you pretty well, and then
all of a sudden things you know, you get the
punt returns, you get you know, you know, you get
(24:38):
a four and out, you know, three and out really
quick quick. That's great, but you know you didn't. I mean,
the odds of what you just did to win that
game are so long that that's like the one out
of twenty times. You know, if you play that game
(24:59):
in that circums fans and play at twenty different times,
there's one of those games, maybe even less that the
Seattle wins. And that's the one that happened last night.
So he gratulations is great. Victory. Yes, they're in first place.
If they out play again, I'm picking the Rams, and
I'm picking the Rams, probably by ten points.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
NFL insider Jason Colar, guest Jason Smith, Mike Carmon lot
from the Fox Sports Radio studios. All right, he usually
does this for me, so I'll do it for him.
Is my partner in crime Mike Harmon going to be
happy tomorrow night after the Packers Bears game? Or is
he going to be unhappy after the Packers Bears game.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
I think it's similar to Dan Campbell if he wins
the division and he just runs naked down eight mile.
I think Harmon. Harmon led the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles,
And I mean he's not the first guy who'd run.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Down the mirror't stand out here. It's not the first
guy to know you were not that probably it's not original.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
But if you ran all the way from there to
the Santa Monica Peer naked would be quite something. Although
you you definitely get arrested, but yeah, like you know,
the cops might catch you somewhere along the line on
that one. And even in Los Angeles. No, yeah, I'm
going I'm going Miracle Mile naked naked run down miracle mile.
(26:18):
That's why I'm betting on that tomorrow. That's that's that's
that's what I think is going to happen. I think
that in Vegas odds should be on Arman running naked
down miracle mile.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
There we go, Harmon, you got to do it now
because Jason Cole said the Bear's windomorrow night, naked down
miracle mile.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
Yeah, I like. I like the Bears in a regular
season situation where scoring is going to be up and
defense is not. Yeah, defense is not as emphasized as
a lot to emphasize during the playoffs, right and now
with Micah out, there's not really anybody on that defensive
(26:55):
line who you think can really chase Cale up down
and make it hard for him. The problem I have
with the Bears when he's talking to the playoffs and
this is this for this year and we'll see, if
you know, if Caleb gets it more under control of
you as he goes forar with Ben Johnson, there is
still that element of degree of difficulty that Caleb Williams
(27:16):
plays within. It's sort of like the guy who's, you know,
like on the high dive and he says he's going
to do what like fifteen twists before he falls into
the pool and stuff like that. Like Caleb wants still
wants to play that game at a critical moment, and
he's good at it right, Like when when he's you know,
running full speed to his right, you know, whatever the
(27:38):
closest you can get to full speed, writing goes right
and then firing back down field, like that's really a
breathtaking throat that's really fun to watch. And even when
he throws his left, he's talk what Aaron Rodgers going
to his left or even you know, Justin Herbert going
to his left. But he's pretty good right so, you know,
he's good at making the act badic I flying you know,
(28:03):
trap youth artist throw. The problem is that he's in
love with making that throw still a little too much
for my liking. In a playoff game against a good
team with a good defense that will say, okay, we'll
allow you to keep trying to do that, and either
you're not going to be able to make the play
(28:23):
because we're we're better at playing defense here, or you're
going to make a mistake and we'll capitalize on it.
That's that's where I am with the Bears when you
talk about playoffs.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
He's on Twitter at Jason Cole sixty two. That's at
Jason Cole sixty two. He is the one responsible for
potentially losing a naked Miracle Mile Harmon on the public
Tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
No Harmon, do it, Harmon, do it.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Let's go good, Jake. I have a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Man. We'll talk to you later.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Day about here he goes, there, he goes. He's a
happy Mike Harmon Tomorrow Night, Naked on Miracle Mile, Jason
call a big update from Alabama and oklahom right now.
Steve Desager is going to give you more details coming
up in a second, and what's trending. But that is
the We just saw the third drop on this drive
by an Alabama receiver. They are forced to kick a
(29:20):
field goal. Not only that, Ty Simpson just got hit
late on a throw that probably should have been a
fifteen yard penalty. But the flag is not thrown, even
the officials looking right at it. So many times Alabama
could have had a first down and maybe another touchdown. Instead,
it's a field goal attempt for Alabama to try to
make this a ten point lead. Steve de Sager has
(29:42):
the result of this field goaling more right now, with
what's trending.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
We've got about four and a half minutes to go
in this opener of the college football playoff, field goal
is straight down the middle. Good, and so it's twenty
seven to seventeen. Number nine Alabama leads at number eight Oklahoma,
a notable come since the Sooners were up seventeen nothing
early in the second quarter and at the time, oh
you had the yardage advantage of one eighty one to twelve.
(30:09):
Alabama had no first downs at the time, three straight
three and outs, and yet they came back to tie
it at the half and now have extended the lead
to twenty seven to seventeen, just over two hundred yards
of offense. Finally, four the visiting Crimson tied to forty
for Oklahoma, obviously, most of that in the first quarter
and a half. Three other first round games coming up Saturday,
(30:32):
including number ten Miami at Texas A and m Duke
quarterback dari And Menso will return next season. He had
transferred there from Tulane this past offseason. Arizona state wide
receiver Jordan Tyson declared for the NFL draft, so he's
expected to miss the sun Ball against Duke in Tampa. Today,
NC Stay won a bowl game against Memphis thirty one seven.
(30:52):
Bengals wide receiver t Higgins returned to full practice today
after a concussion. Quarterback Gino Smith of the Raiders will
start Sunday after shoulder and back injuries.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Wide receiver Steve has that a good or bad news
for the Raiders that Gino Smith is starting.
Speaker 7 (31:06):
Well, Gee, I would like to see Aid and O'Connell
every game for the next ten years for the Roar,
so maybe that is good news. Jets wide receiver Gareth
Wilson will remain on IR he is out for the season.
Rams wide receiver DeVante Adams is likely at next week,
also hamstring problem.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
The New York Knicks.
Speaker 7 (31:24):
We're beaten it home by Philadelphia tonight, Limited night in
the NBA one singeen.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
You expect, Steve, we won, we won the E Cup.
They made us play last week. They make us play tonight.
I mean, come on, you're supposed to protect his.
Speaker 7 (31:35):
House thinking about the banner. Still, the Knicks had won
six in a row. Philly wins in New York won
sixteen to one oh seven. Tyrese Maxi with thirty points.
Chicago won at Cleveland, won thirty six to one twenty
five despite thirty five points from the Cavs Darius Garland.
Boston and San Antonio with wins. Purs have won five straight.
The Thunder with a record of twenty five and two
(31:57):
have just a two point lead late first half at
Minnesota forty three thirty one for OKC. In college basketball,
number ten byu Is leading at half against Abilene Christians
just forty three thirty six. In women's basketball, Number seven,
Maryland won ninety eight thirty against Central Connecticut, which is
zero to eleven. Central Connecticut twelve of sixty three, shooting
(32:19):
just nineteen percent from the floor, twelve baskets and twenty
six turnovers. In the NHL among the five games, Panthers
at home, winning a shootout against the Hurricanes four to three.
US soccer player Tyler Adams will miss up to three
months with a torn MCL. He had back surgery last year.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve l The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Carmon live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios,
A ten point Alabama League now oh for Oklahoma Bred
Venables your new head coach at Michigan the announcement will
come tomorrow the Transit property. We got more college football
on the way, but straight ahead. On this Big Football Friday,
(32:59):
we preview two of the biggest games in the NFL
this weekend. Keep it here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (33:12):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon. Ye, we are headed to the fourth
quarter the first playoff game, first round. It has been
all Alabama since Oklahoma took a seventeen to nothing lead
twenty seven unanswered points. And Oklahoma has a lot of
(33:34):
work to do if they're gonna get back into this game,
because really they have had nothing going on since that
block punt in the first half that really gave Alabama life.
They could converted, they converted, they got a touchdown, they
get a field goal, they get the pick six, and
all of a sudden, a game that Oklahoma was dominant,
Alabama's right back in it, and they picked up with
(33:55):
that momentum in the third quarter outscoring Oklahoma ten. Nothing
is everything is Crimson time right now. Mike Carmen and
to the third.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
It's second and ten from the ou forty eight. So
starting to move the ball a little bit, Materier taking
to the to the ground a little bit, trying to
get some yardage, get things moving. We know they got
a big leg kicker that can get you know, once
you're in range, you've got a wide berth there. But yeah,
certainly for Alabama, I mean it's tail two games. Like
(34:23):
I said, you know, at the outset coming in, it
looked like Oklahoma was gonna have this in a runaway
and just like that, it shifted on a dime and
it never stopped. Right, my old most started rolling like
Dante Culpepper all those years ago when he and Randy
Moss had things cooking. He'd do that little thing with
his arms and start mocking opponents. How that was never
(34:44):
a penalty, I don't know, different times in the NFL
back then, my friend. Because now it's celebration time and
the Tide are rolling, we'll have more of.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
This game coming up in about ten minutes. Again, we're
headed to the fourth quarter, Alabama with a ten point
lead over Oklahoma. But big football Friday, big games in
the NFL to preview, and look, let's kick things off
with a team that is on a season ending heater,
and by that I mean they are on a heater
of ending team seasons. On Sunday, the Chargers, who are
(35:15):
about ending seasons because they ended the Chief season last week.
They will end Dallas's season. Officially, the Chargers have shown
we can win thrown it around, we can win a tight, physical,
nail bier. But this game with Dallas and their defense,
this is more old school Chargers with big scores. Lad
McConkie will come up big. The Charger defense is terrific. Look,
(35:38):
we've been your Dallas whisperer all year long. We told you, hey,
don't count them out because their offense is really dangerous.
I didn't think the offense would be this dangerous throughout
the season, but it was. But really, this is kind
of what it is. They tantalized, they showed you that
maybe we can be a little bit better, and just
when they had to prove it, after the deadline, they
make trades to get Quentnin Williams. Yeah, they fail and
(35:59):
they fall off the pace and now they're this close
to being knocked out. Another season for the Cowboys. That
ends just like almost every other one. They show you
that they can score points, they tantalize you, but when
it comes down to it, they fail. I know we're
thinking about the Chargers. Oh, it's on the road. The
Chargers are terrific. They travel well. The defense travels well.
They beat the Cowboys this weekend.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Yeah, again, their offense scoring up points. That's the question.
I expect greatness from Minter's defense. Cowboys still a two
and a half point favorite in this one, justin Herbert.
As much as we talk about GrITT and Moxie and
all those fun words, they're not putting up a lot
of points. That's the one thing I fear. If it
does open up a little bit and they get into
(36:41):
a shootout, can they actually play in that style?
Speaker 1 (36:44):
Well, the Cowboys defense, enter the Cowboys defense. Mike Carmon,
heytruggling to the Cowboys. Well, but that's the thing, right.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
I did the Eyewatch Flex podcast ian Roddy Dan Byron
to myself and I had mcakey and I said, well,
here's the first time in a while that we've had
to endorse him because he's been invisible the last month.
But you got the two headed monster out of the backfield,
Herbert making plays with his legs. Yeah, I think the
Chargers win this. And it's all on the leg of Dicker,
(37:12):
the kicker he versus Aubrey. That's your battle. Let's just
settle it with kickers.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Elsewhere, just like we all drew it up. The Jaguars
on the Broncos are a big game this weekend. Come on, playoffs.
People are complaining with this is scheduled. Man really didn't
get a flex. It doesn't seem but this is what
it is. And I'm gonna say this, slow your role
on Jacksonville and Trevor Lawrence. Right, reality is here. The
(37:40):
Denver defense is not gonna be what it is going
up against the Jets defense, which basically I don't think
practiced all week. Last week they were embarrassing Trevor Lawrence
and the Jaguars at whatever they wanted to. Again, you
can't base success on how you did against the Jets.
You can't do it. It's just a game. It happened,
it's what you did. But we can't just say wow
(38:01):
the Jeta. More importantly of this, right, you have Denver's
defense top five defense in the NFL. Bow Knicks, who
I said last week he's gonna have his biggest game
of the year against the Packers, and he did. That's
the most dangerous thing for anybody in the NFL, especially
the AFC, that Bo Nicks is going to get past
that game manager mode, the bit of a downtick he
(38:23):
took from as good as he was last year too,
he hasn't quite been the same dynamic guy. But I
said last week he was gonna have his biggest game
of the year against the Packers, whose defense is not bad.
He was. That's the big thing. Even with running back injuries,
it doesn't matter. Denver lights up the scoreboard again. They
win big. I like the over in this game, but
I like Denver by double digit.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
Something's gotta give right two huge winning streaks. Forty seven
your total, Denver three and a half point favorites. I'm
going to take Trevor Lawrence in company to go in
and get a victory.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Of course you are, because you all of a sudden
are blinded by Trevor Lawrence and his un legal performance
against the Jets and everybody hugging yes next to you,
and I could get six touchdowns against.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
The wood They've played a bunch of in the boxing parlance,
since we do have that boxing exhibition going on tonight
as well, a bunch of tomato cans, and a Indianapolis
team that's falling apart. You look at Tennessee Arizona. They
lost to Houston. They did beat the Chargers and bludging
them right the run game. They absolutely ran through them
(39:28):
back at the in the middle of November, a win
over the Raiders. So, uh, you got some some cream
puffs if we want to go down that road on
the relative basis in the National Football League, But this
is one where the rubber meets the road. Lawrence and
Nicks getting after it, looking for etn to have himself
another big day out of the backfield, keep him guessing.
(39:50):
And look, they just extended Jacoby Myers, so he's got
to be good for something. Brian Thomas looking more like
his rookie self. So yeah, let's go, Trevor Lawrence. Here's
your prove it moment.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
You're buying it. You're buying into the hype that goes
along with beating the Jets. Hey, you still haven't apologized
to Sam Darnold for last time. I apologize to Trevor Lawrence.
I don't need to apologize to Trevor Lawrence. He's just
a guy. He's just a guy again. It will be more,
it'll be Oh so, this is what a defense in
(40:23):
the NFL that's actually trying at the end of the
season looks like, Oh it's boy. It's a lot more
difficult than Teina just rolled over like the Jets did
last week. Oh man, this is tough. Uh So, we
got more NFL on the way and more of our
big college football picks of the playoffs. Who's gonna be
the big star of the first round of the college
football playoff? We'll tell you next right here, Jason and
(40:45):
Mike Fox
