You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Hello, Welcome Inside, Happy Happy Wednesday, The Jason Smith Show
with my bes friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Look, I'm gonna do things my way, and my way
is terrible.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Ty Shirt. You love that drop. It's my new favorite.
That's your new favorite.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Die.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
When I said the other day, hey, make a drop
out of that, I didn't know it was gonna hit
that bigfuse at first. AI Jerry Jones The Gift that
keeps on giving Live the tire rack dot Com Studios.
Tirack dot com help you get there. An unmatched selection,
fast free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten
thousand recommended in stallers. Tirack dot Com is the way
(01:13):
tire buying should be. No, the Cowboys do not have
a head coach that right now, All the big news
that the Cowboys do not have a head coach did
not happen today. We're likely going to wind up getting
someone who played for the team at someone during their career. Hey,
it could be Jason Witton, it could it could be
Kellen Moore. Just make Cooper Rush the head coach. Why
why wait? Just make him the head coach?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Abos everybody and hires Trent Balkey as his GM.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Well, I got that for k I I gotta say
it would be great except the phrase Jerry would hire
someone as GM.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yes, that's not swin title, only to then be able
to ultimately fire him.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
See, I made changes. You have zero responsibility here except
when we do well, I get the credit. When we don't,
you have a press conference and say this falls on me,
and then eventually I'll fire you. But your checks will
cash all the way up until that point. So I'm
gonna pay you a week to week. I'm gonna use
you as a puppet and a shield. That's it. Just
gonna take two week whatever. Maybe Hey, if we win, Hey,
(02:14):
you look really good right again. Don't don't talk to anybody,
don't talk to the press, don't talk to the media.
I'm gonna do it my way. My way. My way
is blank and terrible. We're doing that.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
That's how it's gonna go. No, that really was my
favorite story of the day. I mean, I know there's
other news across the NFL, and and you're chesty and
excitable today.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Uh, that's the best.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Though we fix the glitch in Jacksonville, nobody wants to
come here. We're getting nobody even wants to come and
interview here anymore. I found out though, I don't want.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
To come here because of you tread. So, yeah, you're out.
I'm sorry about that. You're out. I know I threatened
to fire you in that zoom call last week when
we were split screen, but now you're really fired.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Just so you know, can I get somebody to give
me a high res image of that split screen from
the zoom so I can put it on a shirt.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
You think they were both flipping each other off their
fit middle fingers up. Look at that. Look over there
and see it. Look look I'm flipping you off.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
I'm flipping it waiting for him to do the thing
like Jack Nicholson's Joker did in the nineteen eighty nine
classic Batman, where he just pushes it and forces the
mayor off the screen. I could have worked where he
did worked. Trent Balkey just disappears from the where Trent
balk go Who I'm the only one standing up here.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
But yes, the big coaching news in the NFL today,
And I don't know how many times I'll ever get
to say this because it's very rare. Here's go on.
The Jets won one today. The Jets got to win
today because they got the absolute right guy. Now, is
it gonna make a difference? Remember Jets? But they got
the right guy. They went out and got Aaron Glenn
(03:45):
as their new head coach. Now, who is a star
with the Jets. They drafted him in the nineties, He
went to a couple of Pro Bowls. He has apprenticed
and coached under every big defensive coach of the last
twenty years. He spent so much time learning about the
offensive side of the ball. Offensive coordinators think he's gonna
be a great super coach made up of parts of
lesser coaches, Like he's gonna yes, here, this is gonna
(04:09):
be Sean Payton's arm and Bill Parce sells his leg,
you know that, like, and he's someone that wanted this
job the Jets was his dream job. Which again, how
many times am I ever gonna get to say that
the Jets. I thought they're gonna have trouble getting anybody
to come in. It seems like a really hard sell
on his part.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
This. Hey, hey, when they ask you about me, you
tell them that this was always my dream job.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
I mean, he said that this is my dream job.
He knows New York. He knows what it's like to
play for Woody Johnson. Now he's gonna know what it's
like to coach for Whatody Johnson. He's a he's a
bit of a culture builder. Although he's now he's gonna
get a chance to do it all by himself. He's
already talking about veteran offensive coaches he wants to hire.
Like everything is great. The Jets actually win one. I
(04:51):
mean I don't know if they'll ever win one again,
but they actually win one today. Getting the right guy
to come in and be the head coach.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Now we gotta chuckled about it. Ian Roddy one of
our executive producers here. He does my uh I watch
Fleck podcast. He's working with us this evening. He goes,
you paid a consulting firm a lot of money to
get to that guy. That's kind of what you do
with consulting firms. They usually just hey, Aaron Glenn.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Oh thanks, Jason, Oh great, Hey, you know, just just
buy me a sandwich. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
They usually just kind of affirm what you in the
building already thought. You think, Oh, and then they write
up and add a couple of extra phrases and maybe
a little bit of a couple of pie charts and
some graphs to make it look pretty. But it's really
what the veteran people, the people with the institutional memory
already knows about what needs to happen and change in
(05:41):
the building.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
What should we do here? Well, I don't know, what
do you think? Well? I think we should Yes, that's
what you should absolutely do.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Now we hire a guy who's been around and look,
you went through his CV and and all the coaches
he's worked with and institutions he's been at to get
best of brand. Right, go back to the excitement Sean
Peyton had for him and everything else. But you had
a really good defensive guy in Robert sla What happened
(06:07):
to your team after Robert Sala left?
Speaker 1 (06:09):
We got even worse. We went from bad to worse.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
But now the defense sucked right right, so it was
bad over here, and then Aaron Rodgers actually played pretty
well down the stretch. That may not matter because that's
the other part of this Jets of Hey, Aaron glens In,
does he want Aaron?
Speaker 1 (06:27):
What I'm trying to do to you. Let me just
say this first, is that is he the perfect candidate? No,
he is the perfect candidate for the Jets. But all
the jobs, all the jobs stink, and a lot of
the people that you were talking about, now there's nobody sexy.
But you saw.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
The Jaguars. Now they're gonna come back with that job
back to Oasis. It doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
He's not good. He's not gonna put a coach in
the NFL. Man, But now they're gonna go clearly a
bittersweet symphony in Jacksonville. As he walks back into the build,
said Liam Cohen. Half, NFL fans got the guy from
Oasis with the guy with the brother. They can't stand
each other. Oh okay, they're.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Gonna go out on tour to try to make a
lot of money. Though, what's the over unround shows they
actually do before that tour falls apart three three, Well,
well we got to give it a half. Are they
gonna do pink Floyd?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Where? Hey, if do you like? David Gilmore's on one
side of the stage and Roger Waters on the other side,
and we don't pass the middle, We don't pat you
don't pass used to used to end your side. I
stay on my You haven't see what they finally did.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Gilmore and Company just said, finally, all right, what's the buyout?
All right, we're fine, we don't want to deal with
that guy anymore. But for Liam Cohen, right, he was
going down to Jacksonville. He was one of the hot coordinators.
Everybody's looking at and he's like, yeah, I'm not going there.
That might have pushed the tread balkey thing. But for
your jets, what did you have? You got McCarthy, you
got Pete Carroll, and you got a bunch of guys.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
There was nobody. There's nobody for anybody, right, there's nobody
out Ben Johnson, boys, there's nobody. Johnson was the guy
he went to the right, was the other guy. That's it.
And they're both gone. And now it's well, what the hell?
This is why you're hearing names like Jason Witten and
Brian Schottenheimer and you know Rex Ryan had an interview
with you. But for Jason Witten, would you get your best? Yeah?
But I mean to go from I mean really wow,
(08:10):
to go from. We watched Jeff Saturday go from broadcasting
to NFL coach. Now, well, but he Witt's at least
been well.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
He has been broadcasting, go out, Remember that didn't that
didn't last very long.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
He's been coaching high school for everything he's done after that.
But there's to understand, like, hey, no, Aaron Glenn's not
the perfect candidate, but he was the best out of
what's out there, because just like every year, Hey, sometimes
there's a lot of great candidates. Sometimes there's no candidates.
But when you have a job opening, you got to
hire somebody's nothing you have. But so I get quarterback class.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
I may not like this guy, but I got a
draft him in the second round and draft your door side.
I gotta go pay a lot of money to a
guy in free agency. You gotta draft Kyle McCord if
you want somebody.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Yeah. So yeah, no, but he was the perfect fit.
And I guarantee you this right. I hate to say,
I told you. So, we've already seen a couple of
reports out of New York and Michael k Uh's you know,
been in New York radio for a long time. Yankees
play by play guy said, hey, he's heard that Aaron
Glenn wants to bring Aaron Rodgers back. Now, I hate
to say I told you so what I've been telling
(09:08):
you from the end of the season. Rogers is coming back.
He's gonna be the starting quarterback of the Jets this
same and you guys are gonna suck. It's gonna well, yeah,
that could actually happen, and I'm not I'm under no
illusion going to My win is today getting Aaron Glenn,
the guy that says it's my dream, but that's it,
that's our win.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
He's not quite harball in the relentless enthusiasm for the day,
but he's damn close.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
No, I'm not hating at all. Actually, no, it doesn't
the whole wit. Yeah, no, this may be the only
day we win. So this is all I mean. I've
champagned it.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
It's off season wins. But I won the off season
for a day and a half. Now it's your turn.
If Although I got a guy that says he's been
in the Matrix for a year.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Your top that that is, well, did he win in
the matrix?
Speaker 3 (09:49):
If he won the Matrix, If he won there, he
dressed like Neo. All he needed was the shades Ben
Jonson the Matrix. That was a great quarterback. We won
a lot of games here in real world.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
But look, I told you, if the Jets wanted Aaron
Rodgers gone, he'd have been gone. Woody Johnson would have
come down and said that said, I've had it, and
I know that he and Aaron Rodgers gone back and
forth in the media. This is big boy stuff. The
Jets need a bridge. We've said this. The Jets need
a bridge quarterback. Anyway, they're gonna take a quarterback in
the draft. It's a year to take somebody in the
second or third round. Maybe it's Jackson Dart, maybe it's
(10:21):
somebody else. This is why the Jets have bigger issues
than Aaron Rodgers, who turned out to have a pretty
decent season in the end. Maybe he needed twelve weeks
to get back from his torn achilles because he threw
the ball well at the end. He wound up in
the top ten in yards and touchdowns. He threw the
ball with a little bit more vigor and looked better.
Wasn't as skittish as he was the first twelve weeks.
(10:42):
The Jets have bigger issues. You still have Jordan.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Travis, who have you? You weren't able to evaluate it.
It's gonna be the quarterback room be feeling a bit.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Rogers and Travis and another young quarterback and Rodgers are
gonna have all kinds of questions, all statements about well,
the other guys in here. We try to get together,
and it's gonna be a great summer. They're all gonna
be singing. Wilson happy. He said he's good. Yea, I'm
sure he will be. Uh, but he's gonna bring everybody along.
He's gonna be the quarterback, right Aaron Glenn, I'm sure
wants to come in and have a freebe year. And
(11:11):
the freebe year is Hey, we're gonna get a quarterback anyway.
We don't know that we're gonna throw him right in,
but we're gonna get somebody. Hey. If Rogers is here
and he stinks, okay, moved out. Now. I'm married to
the next quarterback we have because his his fate. Your
fate is always married. To the quarterback you have. If
Caleb Williams stinks, Ben Johnson's getting fired, he's gonna be
in oc someplace else in three years. Right. If the
(11:31):
next quarterback for the Jets is not good, it's gonna
be on Aaron Glenn. But it's a free year because
he's inheriting Aaron rodd He knows this, he knows it.
If I bring somebody in and they stink, boy that now,
now it's on me. But we draft somebody young. Rogers
is good enough to come into this year with when
you have guys waiting in the wings. Again, the Jets
(11:52):
have bigger problems than Aaron Rodgers. The defense stinks. You
gotta make sure your playmakers are happy. I'm sure Garrett
Wilson's happy that Aaron Glenn is here as a well
respected guy. Decide, hey, DeVante Adam's gonna stay or you're
gonna have to cut him. But the Jets have bigger issues.
And if you need a bridge guy anyway, a guy
you're paying already and you can you can draft somebody
else to come in and fill the quarterback room. Telling
(12:12):
you Aaron Rodgers is gonna be quarterback of the Jets
in the fall. You should have got odds on it
when when I when I said it at the end
of the season, because now, boy, it really kind of
looks that way he's gonna be the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Yeah, I think when you look at it overall, I mean,
we laid out the landscape of quarterbacking, not a whole
lot in the drafts. Nobody you're you're chasing up the
draft board to go get. Uh. Free agency is a master.
You're gonna bring back Sam Donald. No, you're not bringing
back Sam Donald. Uh. And you're not going to trade
(12:43):
or acquire Kirk Cousins because he's no better than what
you have. Right, It's a couple of veteran guys uh
and a bunch of journeymen. And you get to the drafts.
So for Aaron glenn In coming back and selling Woody
Johnson on the dream jobs like, here's what you got,
got a couple of good compone in parts on defense,
we're gonna need more, you know, the plethora, the plethora
(13:05):
of the defensive linemen that you once had. They're not
there anymore. Your offensive line stunk, so you need to
go back and fix that. But you do have Brese
Hall try to get Garrett and Garrett Wilson to buy
back in Devonte Adams played pretty well in Spurts.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Not great.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
Yeah, Mala guy Corley, don't know what he is, but
speed guy potentially you rise up with him. Go find
a pass catching tight end. Everybody's best friend. But you
gotta reformulate. Just from an institution. You know what expectations are.
Everybody jumped on board the bandwagon last year, right, the
(13:43):
bills are gonna fall off wrong.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Patriots were no good.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
We knew that, and you look at the division as
a whole, and the expectations were huge. So coming off
of that, hey man, that got gutted, you get to
You got cart Blanc to go back and build it
back up.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
So we win today. We win today, and Aaron Rodgers
wins because he's gonna be the quarterback. It's gonna I'm
telling you what's happening, what Frostburg. You win today, you
suck tomorrow. Yeah, that's that's okay tomorrow and then you
got today. I'll worry about tomorrow to morrow after and
we got tonight. Yeah, but who needs tomorrow exactly? Here's
the Ali's saying that when she was all drunk on cheers.

(17:14):
told you, talked about Aaron Glenn breaking down the Jets
get a win. You're so exciting. Aaron Rodgers is going
to be the quarterback of the Jets next year. Look,
it's happening, man, it's happening. It's all happening. It's all happening.
It's all about the shirt. I told you now, the
T shirt is everything. There's a there's a conversation that
after the big news today. Yeah, kind of have to
have with a lot of people. I have to have
(17:38):
the conversation with you. I have to have the conversation
with everybody listening. I have to have the conversation with
my wife's family, and I have to sit here and
I have to tell Okay, I want you to sit down. Now,
you've lost both your coordinators. Okay you and I say you,
I mean the Lions. I have to tell you that
(17:58):
the Lion's Super Bowl window with this team is closed.
It is a closed or are we putting a lock on it?
It is a closed? Is it that cool? Sound effective?
Speaker 4 (18:10):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (18:12):
No, It's like what was that the commercial when that
when it says, oh, if you do drugs or deal
drugs and you want and they have the jail doors
swam yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Yeah, yeah, exactly what joh the wings and you hear that, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
You would say why why why? Yeah? Losing Yes, losing
your coordinator is a big deal. Ben Johnson to the
Bears and Aaron Glenda the Jets. Right, you and I
are are ending the window of the of the lines
to the Super Bowl. Uh, it's gonna be different, and
it has to be different in twenty twenty five because
clearly what they've had the last two years hasn't been enough.
(18:48):
Last year, Dan Campbell got too smart for himself. This year,
they had a lot of defensive injuries. They couldn't get
out of their own way, and it was a shocker
that they go home. Jared Goff has a bad game.
But bottom line, if you don't go to the Super
Bowl the year you have home field advantage and you
lose your first playoff game. Not the NFC title game
where hey, a great defensive team came in and slugged
(19:12):
it out with you in one seventeen sixteen, This is
the Lions lost their first playoff game at home. They
were the best team in the NFL all season long.
If you don't go to the super Bowl this year,
when are you going? When are you going? There's gonna
be a lot of change in Detroit next year. And yes,
the good news is they have a lot of money
to spend. The bad news is they have to spend
a lot of money and bring new players in and
(19:33):
is it gonna work with a new coordinator? With new
coordinator on both sides of the ball, are you going
to be able to build that. It's going to be
incredibly difficult to say, hey, here's the formula we had
that works so well in the regular season. Now we're
going to bring another formula in that works just as
well and gets us over the hump in the playoffs.
Like this is like, hey, let's fire Ryan Day. Who
(19:54):
was gonna get you that little bit extra? Now? The
Lions have to have a lot of change. You have
a lot of change defensively, you got some change offensive
and you're gonna have new leaders, You're gonna have new everything.
But mainly when you break down what it's like for
a team going forward after the emotion and the grit
and grind it out mentality that you've gone with the
(20:17):
last couple of years, to not have any see any
fruits from that, that's a really difficult thing to get
back to and say, we just have to get back
and put our heads down to work harder. Because that
because you can sell that for a while, right, you
can sell put your heads down, work hard. You should
put your head down to work hard.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
But when you make that's good life advice for all
of you out there, all you kids listening, listen.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Just to work. Be born into a rich family, you'll
inherit a lot of money. Marry well and you're good.
Uh is that when you can sell that? But that's
got a shelf life. And Dan Campbell has had a
great culture around the Lions for the last couple of years.
Look believe in everybody, and when your team grows, you
see the results. There were tangible results for the Lions.
They went from we're an embarrassment to hey, we can
(21:01):
win a couple of games here, we might have something
going on here. Then last years WHOA, we're better than
anybody expected to This year was now we're even better
than we were a year ago, where the big dog
in the NFC, we have home field all the way
through and now you lost. So how do you go
back to that grit mentality where you put everything in
that you were supposed to put in when you did
it all the way this year and it didn't work. Mentally,
(21:24):
that's a really difficult thing to get past. And I
give the Lines a lot of credit because they got
past the mental hurdle last year of the NFC title
game and a couple of bad fourth down conversions from
going to the Super Bowl to hey, let's dial it back.
We're back. Next year is our year. And they blew
the doors off the teams in the regular season, didn't
matter what defensive players were hurt, they found a way
to score, they found a way to win. And then
it's a screeching halt in their first playoff game at home,
(21:46):
at home. All of these things. I mean, you may think, well,
they're young, and they're just gonna reload and bring them.
There's a lot of change that's gonna happen. It's gonna
be physical change and it's gonna be mental change, and
that's going to be too difficult. And I expect the
Lines to a big step back next year. They'll probably
score a lot of points, but they'll take a big
step back next year as they have to retool what
it means to be a championship team because clearly, even
(22:08):
with the injuries, it wasn't enough. And guys are gonna
get hurt. It's gonna happen. Okay, well, if we're healthy, Yeah,
everybody wants to be healthy, but how many teams actually
are healthy. This needs to be a year and I
hate to say it, but the Lion's Super Bowl window
it's closed. It's slamming it, slam it shut. I have
to get inside edition stinger while you're at.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
It to have it.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Look, they've gone as it would Ben Johnson have left.
He stayed an extra year. Okay, he stayed an extra year.
The openings this year were not good, right, the openings
were terrible. But you kinda have to go. And he
goes to the right team. And I'm not saying that,
but does Ben Johnson Ben Johnson thought, Hey, there's more
to do in Detroit? Does he stay? He stayed last
year when there was more to do.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Now, maybe not more to do.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Well, but you saw enough with Caleb Williams opposing him,
and maybe you were playing that chess game in your
head of what would you do with what that Bears
offense was knowing you had a dune day, knowing that
Cole Comet was doing jumping, Jack's begging for the football?
Speaker 4 (23:06):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (23:07):
And DJ Moore go on.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
Down line, keithan Allen when he was healthy, move those
chains and some creativity to get yourself around what was
a subpar offensive line that maybe you're like, I'll take
the physical challenge and if I can go win in Chicago,
I'm a hero because here I get credit, But ultimately
it's Dan Campbell's bravado and his work at the podium
(23:32):
and people eating out of his hands and being excited
about his building of culture that gets the credit.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
Johnson didn't, you know, get you know, lost in the
in the weeds.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Right. He certainly got his, uh, his laudatory terms for
the innovation and for the trick plays except when they
went wrong, although Campbell drew a fire going back to
last year, which I thought was on because you know,
Reynolds just has to catch the ball. But that's a
whole other thing that we won't relitigate here. But you know,
(24:07):
the football gods lower g will come after you, and
they did right Hubris Pride. Before the fall, you had
a couple of things not go your way, the Jamison
Williams call that we've talked about, and the number of
injuries and theory the bug moves on somewhere else. But
you've got thirty one free agents you've got to deal with.
You've got to replace both coordinators, and you have to
(24:29):
whoever the new coordinator is, even if it's someone in house,
they've got to establish an entirely new identity and relationship
with Jared Goff and build him back up from what
was an awful game. Because remember, with all of the
wins you got, you played one more game this year
(24:50):
than the Bears, than the Jets, then the Jaguars and Titans.
You played one more game and you go home. So, yeah,
you've got the guts, right, guys are still going to
buy in. You've got a good offense, got a lot
a lot of talent. There's a lot of guys there, right,
so you have a good base from which to build.
(25:11):
And do I think that the Packers and and Vikings
play as well as they did this year? Perhaps not,
Jordan Love, We've still got a huge question mark with
and the Vikings won a lot of close games and
may have over cheese achieved that.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Spot the over chee over cheevee they over the over
cheat over to swallow said over cheese for the Packers, Yes,
over chea. They may have over cheese like you do
when you when you may may hit your h I'm
in a cheese coma.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
S hit that before, but now you think the Bears
will be that may be closer to the team everybody
envisioned this year, right, your era of good feelings that
Ben Johnson can lead.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Them to another level. Eagles are still good, the Commanders
are even better. The Rams have shown up saying hey,
we are here, not going Wow, there are a question
we'll talk about that. I mean, they have shown me
many Your guy needs a backy out of me right
and may retire. He's always fine, He's always They worried
about Matthew Stafford. He always as fune. No, you still
have a lot, there's a lot of talent. Doesn't always
(26:14):
need to be in the division.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Right, But overall, tell me the forty nine ers are
going to fail at every turn like that. The injury
bugs going to stay with them, not saying that they
suddenly are world beaters again, but there'll be a better
version than they were in twenty twenty four. The Cardinals curiosity.
Seahawks were a pretty good team. Did they fix their quarterback?
(26:36):
They've got a lot of talent. There questions of whether
they trade DK Metcalf. All of that to say, the
path you had, the everything went your way. Obviously, the
defensive attrition was huge. You're still a double digit favorite
in this game. I think that's getting.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Lost in a lot of this.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
You know, and your offensive side of the ball. With
Ben Johnson at the helm, you were still expected to
go in boat races.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
And it was such a failure because yes, you had
the offensive side of the ball where the mistakes just
killed them so they couldn't move the football. But Jared
Goff's mistakes and the and the bad play call by
Ben Johnson, the trick pass that killed them, that absolutely
killed them. And I'm not dismissing that, but you couldn't
stop the command at at all, at all?
Speaker 2 (27:20):
At all?
Speaker 1 (27:21):
What did they punt once? You couldn't stop them at all?
Did you see at Willy You're under for punts in
that game was six? Yeah? Oh what the hell? Set
that lineh great about that run for that I saw
it the morning of.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
They were talking about it on the on the Countdown
to Kickoff show, and I'm like, neither one of those
guys gonna punt.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
We joked about it on Friday that there might not
be a punt in the game at all, because look,
as bad as you played offensively, you still scored thirty
one points and you weren't close, right, you still were
able to but you made the mistakes happened, But okay,
your defense has to be will bail you out a
little bit. And it's not like the commanders are rife
with tons. The playmakers. Jayden Daniels is unbelievably good. We
(28:03):
talked about him. There's five truly great quarterbacks in the
NFL and he is one of them. But you gotta
be able to stop them at some point. You can't
have twelve guys on the field defense end and Aaron
Glenn already jetting. You can't have twelve guys on the
field defensive on a big third and goal. But every
third down. I never thought the Lions were gonna stop
them down every single down. I mean I was. It
(28:26):
was such a big failure across the board. And that's
why coming back from that mentally is gonna be really
difficult because a year ago, this time a year ago
was man, we were there. We made the mistakes, and wow,
I can't believe that. You know, if we just if
we convert those fourth downs, we make a different call,
or we punt or whatever it is, we win that game. Okay,
We're full of fire. You walk away from this game
(28:48):
going what the hell happened? What the hell happened? Why
do we turn them over? So much. Why couldn't our
defense stop anybody? Why we had injuries, but we still
stopped guys all through the rest of the year. I
know Adon Hutchinson got hurt, but we still had guys.
Everybody has injury. It went really well with what happened
long after he was gone. Yeah, this is an other
guy stepped up.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
And obviously, losing a player to a broken arm on
the third play of the game is not helpful when
you're already down to a depth chart that you're just
trying to learn guys' names as they're trotting out onto
the field. All that said, you weren't close. And I
think the cautionary tale is the twenty twenty three Philadelphia Eagles. Right,
(29:28):
they returned to a lot of talent, but they lost
both their coordinators and they lost the identity last year.
A lot of talking about infighting, a lot of questions
coming into the year. If I'm Dan Campbell and I'm
that Detroit front office, I'm doing everything I can to
learn what went wrong in their off season to lead
to that debacle that you had a year ago before
(29:49):
they rose from the ashes. Because you can get a
quick turnaround, but you got to get everything right. And
that's what the Eagles were able to do as we
wait for them here in the title game once again
for the Lions, Yeah that was a great two years.
Now on to the next era.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, good luck. I mean the window is closed. The
Lions are gonna need change in time before they get
back to being a big Super Bowl threat. There's gonna
be do you watch the year next year. It's gonna
be very frustrating. I don't know why this happens. And
we're gonna talk about personnel changes. We're gonna talk about
changes and attitude. We're gonna talk about all all these
different things are gonna happen. This window is closed, and
it's gonna be a little bit before it opens.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Back folks that got really chesty about the Lions, including
all your family, Hi, guys, you're gonna get humbled again
real quick.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Don't have the right team on the court, much like
the Lions didn't have the right team on the field. Well.

who many people call the Dan Campbell here at Fox
Sports Radio. She's full of attitude, she builds a culture,
(30:55):
and she has hit people in the kneecaps so many times.
It's Manzi Belagno's.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
Take that comparison any day.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Thank you so much. There you go.
Speaker 4 (31:04):
Can you run through a wall for me, just like
the Lions with for him?
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Thank you? Wait till next hour. You're the Jimmy Butler
of Fox Sports Radio. Just just wait for that. I
also love that one too. I'm all four, I love
ye Me, I'm team Yemmy. We'll talk about that later, guys.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
There's one game going on in the NBA right now,
Warriors Kings, Warriors on top, twenty four to twenty after
the first quarter.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Still to come the Celtics and the Clippers. But we
don't need to watch this because nobody is playing for
the Clippers.
Speaker 4 (31:30):
No Kawhi Leonard, no James Harden, no Norman Powell, noa
vits Zubats, no Chris Dunn. So I don't know why
the Clippers are playing, but they are, so we'll see
how that goes. The games have wrapped up aside from
those two pistons defeated the Hawks one fourteen to one
oh four. The Suns took down the Nets one o
eight to eighty four. Timberwolves edge the Mavericks one fifteen
to one fourteen. Kyrie Irving had a chance to tie
(31:52):
the game, couldn't get that three in, but he ended
with thirty six points, officially surpassing eighteen thousand career points.
The Grizzlies crushed the Hornet. It's one thirty two to
one twenty, and the Thunder came back at the end
to defeat the Jobs one twenty three to one fourteen.
Shay Gilgess Alexander former Clipper, always a Clipper, fifty four
points and eight rebounds. And then it's the Cavaliers and
the Rockets. Guys, ball don't lie. This is what happened.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
Calves are losing by two.
Speaker 4 (32:19):
With two point eight seconds left, Darius Garland gets fouled
at the three point line. They review it and say
it's even a flagrant three point foul because he didn't
give them enough space to land, so they call it
a flagrant. Garland misses the first two free throws, makes
the third one. They still get the ball back with
two point eight seconds left, and they don't get it. Rockets,
(32:40):
hold on, ball don't lie. They beat the Calves one
oh nine to one oh eight.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
One college. Wait now, so what you're telling me is
you bet the Rockets today? None Rockets. I'd just say ball,
don't lie. One Rockets on the money.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
Law one Men's College hoops going on right now with
seven minutes to go, Number sixteen Ole Miss beating number
thirteen Texas A and M fifty two.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
To forty seven.
Speaker 1 (33:06):

My favorite NFL story of the day coming up in

twenty minutes, but straight ahead. More so than getting a
new head code. This is this is more my favorite
that what I celebrated. I was happy about. This is
my favorite. It's better than yesterday's spelling me follow you
Down's my favorite Jim Bossom song. You know, Hey Jealous,
He's a best song. But coming up next, there's an
NBA team that needs an intervention after the big news today.
(33:47):
That's next Jason and Mike Fox.

More NFL coming up about fifteen minutes. Biggest best story,
well not the biggest Aaron Glenda the Jets, but the
most fun story of the day. What all of us
can unite against a common person. We all of a
(34:24):
sudden can't stand. Hey, that's a win. But this from
the NBA. The Heat are going to suspend Jimmy Butler.
Oh boy, now now you're thinking, Wait a minute, am
I listening to a show for a week and a
half ago?
Speaker 4 (34:38):
No?
Speaker 1 (34:38):
Stop, stop, no, uh no, they're going to suspend him again.
He was suspended a few weeks ago because he requested
a trade. He ripped the organization. They had him stay
home during their road trip. Okay, Jimmy Butler's coming back now,
but now he's getting suspended for the next two games
because he missed their team flight ear in the day
(35:00):
and now has plans to join the Heat tonight, but
they decided we're keeping him home from its two game
road trip Thursday tomorrow they play Milwaukee and Saturday at
the Nets. So he just returned on Friday from the
seven game suspension for being detrimental and now he misses
the team flight and being sent home again. And on
Friday he wore really nice Phoenix Suns looking shoes. Yeah. Look,
(35:23):
and it's time for an intervention. And I get that
pat Riley has done a lot. Pat Riley, pat Riley,
pat Riley, all this, Yes, yes, I know, pat Riley's
tried to make it work. All this stuff's happened. You
have no choice. Now you have to trade Jimmy Butler.
And I know that pat Riley wants to stand up
and be principled and say this is not how we
do it. But I'm sorry, Pat's twenty twenty five. I'm
(35:44):
sorry that the players in the NBA have more power
than you want them to have. But this is how
it goes when a superstar wants out and he has
conduct detrimental to the team on his resume. You move him.
You have no choice. You can't keep him around. I
can't believe they still kept him. We're gonna suspend you
for seven game's conduct detrimental. You gotta find a way
to make it move. And maybe you're not gonna get
what you expect in a trade, but you can't sit
(36:06):
here and just sit in the corner and hold your
breath until I'm gonna get a trade we want. You
have to get him out. He has to go. This
is a big strategy that players have used the last
few years. When it's untenable, I rip the organization. If
it doesn't work, I keep ripping them until they trade me.
And I know that pat Riley wants to be principled,
and I don't care. This is not a contest between
(36:27):
you and him. You got to do what's best for
the team. The longer you let this thing fetter, the
worse it's gonna be. Jimmy Butler is a thirty five
year old player. Be happy to get out from under
his money. When you get for him, you get for him.
You got a lot. You got to the NBA finals.
Butler was really good. He was here for six years.
But eventually, this is what happens with Jimmy Butler. He
wears out his welcome and I get what you're trying
to do, trying to be the big parent in the room. No,
(36:49):
this is how it works in the NBA. When a
player acts up like this and he has a lot
of power because he's a star, you have to trade him.
And I'm sorry, but if you couldn't make it work,
that's not my fault. But the rest of the future
of this team. Don't hold it hostage. You have to
trade Jimmy. But that's not Walk into pat Riley's office
and Tom and I'd say, Hey, all these trophies are
really cool. Were you happy Adrian Brody played you in Showtime?
(37:09):
Do you want you another season of Showtime?
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Here's any bubble. Let me tell you what to do here.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Yeah, So you give your speech that you start to turn,
He'd say, don't turn your back on me. I'm the
best coach in this league. I'm the best coach in
the sport, best GM, best executive ever, and stand there
and stare you down. Your point is well taken? Is
that at this stage, regardless of new age athlete twenty
(37:34):
twenty five, whatever. You're holding your team hostage at this point,
no matter what year it is, right, he's a distressed property.
You're not based on the NBA rules, you get saved
because in every other league you get dimes on the
dollar for this guy to move him away, to sustain
(37:54):
your year and keep moving. Right now, you're in the
nine spot, just ahead of the bulls at a nice round,
not getting ahead of the right med part of the curve,
the old joke, not falling, charging ahead, not falling behind.
You're at twenty one and twenty one. You can make
a change whereby you bring in assets you know that'll
(38:15):
be on the court, maybe help you to move up.
Maybe you don't get to the six seed, but you
stay in the playoff chase and you can start looking
towards your next year. As it stands right now, all
the guys in that locker room have to answer for
this nonsense. Yeah, and they're looking at you for some guides.
You're supposed to be the principled leader, the smartest guy
(38:37):
in the room.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
Show it.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Right now you're just holding your breadth in the corner
like he is and waiting for which one passes out.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
First, and look, and I know it seems difficult because
he is does a player option next year for fifty
two million dollars, which there's no way he's turning that down.
But teams he is desirable for. Again, we talked about
this last night with Steph curR and Joel Embiid. Two
playoffs with Jimmy Butler, is what you're gonna get and
the list of teams he wants to go to. Is
it worth it for the Rockets it might be? Is
(39:05):
it working for the Mavericks it might be? Is it
worth it for the Warriors? If Steph Curry ain't getting
traded it might be. So it's not like suddenly, oh,
there's nobody gonna touch this guy now for for the
rest of this year and next year. Yeah, you could
also make the money work and say, hey, Jimmy, we
gotta figure we'll trade you and there's it, but we
gotta do something money wise, all right, let's figure something
out with the money. Right, there's always some truct and
(39:26):
massaging of that contract. Not that impossible because the big
players get fifty million dollars a year now, and and
he's someone that and I've said it from the beginning
for the next two years. I'm okay with if I'm
okay with Joel Embiid for the next two years, I'm
okay with Jimmy Butler for the next not to you
is the next two playoffs. I'm a little bit over
a year. So yes, he is desirable that there is
a lot of teams that think, hey, you know Jimmy
(39:47):
and a new in a new uh environment. Hey, he
might be that that that you know, that crackle that
we need and he can still hoop up when he
needs you doesn't need to be the one on this team. Hey,
I can go get Jimmy Butler. He is eminently tradeable.
Just understand you're not gonna get exactly what you expect
and you gotta be okay with that because that's how
it comes well. But you've seen it.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
That's about the gestation period of the next time that
Jimmy Butler is not gonna like the people in the
locker room or the executives. It's two years. It's great,
it's the perfect time frame. You're not looking to bring
him in for a long term deal and if you
do well, that's on you. You get what you buy.
But short term, he can come in now. I would
understand reticence if you're the Rockets, because you're a young
(40:29):
team and all of a sudden him coming in and
perhaps changing the feel of that room that you've established
with all these young players. I can understand where maybe
you're reticent there. But for the Warriors, where you have
a true leader in Steph Curry, he's gonna chew them
out piece and then he's gonna chew you out.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
That it works.
Speaker 3 (40:51):
But yeah, Jimmy Butler and pat Riley, it's time to
a blackjack dealer this thing and be done with it.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
Hat. You gotta do it, man, there's no choice now,
you have to do it. You don't even have to
take an ill. You just say, hey, we made the
best deal we could. I can't believe you didn't do
it the first time around. You had seven games. See,
I can't believe it. Uh coming up next, Oh boy.
My favorite NFL story of the day involves the biggest
quarterback in the league, Fox
