But two big mistakes. Right now, we are early in
the third quarter. The Chiefs lead the Lions fourteen to seven.
So much to get to you from this game. No
Travis Kelce for the Kansas City Chiefs. No Chris Jones.
We know this the story of the game so far.
Two mistakes by the Lions, who have played pretty well
against this Chief's offense. That is missing its biggest cog

in the wheel. Marvin Jones's fumble deep in Chiefs territory
in the first half was rough because this is.

When the Lions are going in.

They're going to retake the lead at fourteen to seven
or at least ten to seven, and instead coughs it up.
All right, turnovers happen. You understand, final minute of the half.
This is a seven to seven game, and it's going
exactly how how he told you was gonna go. And
this is look and it's not just us, but you
watch the first half of Week one NFL games the
last few years, they are very difficult. They are sloggy,

they are sloppy because first team offenses don't get enough
time in real game time environment, so it takes a
little bit for the game to get going. You have
a seven to seven game in the final minute of
the first half and Mahomes has the ball and he
completes a pass that is three, probably near four yards
short of the first down on the chief side of midfield.

So the Chiefs are facing a fourth and four at
or fourth and close to four, a long three. Let's
say it's a long three fourth and a long three
on their side of midfield. It just so happens on
the Lion's luck. The first flag of the first half
is thrown and it's a holding penalty on the Chiefs,
and Dan Campbell accepts it, which is a stunning move

because what are you doing, right? It's fourth and four.
It's not like the Chiefs are rolling up all kinds
of points here and they're hot. Fourth and four a
minute to go in the first half. They're punting away
to ye. They're not saying, hey, we're gonna go for it.
Their offense is yet to click. They're not going to
go forward. But for some reason, Dan Campbell accepts the penalty,

and then you watch Mahomes convert that long third down,
giving them second life. Three plays later, they're in the
end zone on a touchdown pass to Blake Bell, who
I told you I had him right as my number
one tight end this week. So that's seven points is
on Dan Campbell. I don't understand why he took that penalty.
It's fourth and almost four yards ago from the Chiefs

side of midfield. In a seven to seven game, it
should be seven to seven at half time because what
the Chiefs would have likely done is we're gonna punt,
We'll call time out. Maybe at the ball back near midfield,
kick a field goal to go up ten to seven,
and instead Dan Campbell puts those seven points on the board.
Why are you giving mahomes another chance?

But like, even if they bring the offense out and
they go for an on fourth down, they still have
to convert and you still are forcing the issue, right,
they still have to go make an additional sequence of
plays unless they can get it all and hit the
jackpot on a big playdown field, which really hasn't been
there much all night. Right, we saw one to MVS
that was it like that. Otherwise it's been get the

You see what happens, and we talked about it last
night a lot when Travis Kelsey's not on the field,
it's bogged down. I know to start the game as

You're also trying to keep Patrick Mahomes on the sideline right,
and still trying to figure out your shiny new toys, right,
Jamiir Gibbs, you've seen some success, David Montgomery. You and
I were talking a little pre show of the mix
and match, and you must really not trust Jamir Gibbs
anywhere near pass protection if he's not seeing the football.

So all of that to set up the play which
became an extra touchdown going into halftime.

So right now it's a how do we throw somebody open?
Even Mahomes getting frustrated winging the ball in the towards
the end of the first half, he just wing one downfield.

It was a fifty to fifty play and the defensive
back was a split second away from picking that ball off,
but instead it goes as a completion two plays later

is the highest paid player in NFL history. This is
Joe Burrow. On the one hand, I can say, boy,

even though Joe Burrow, you expected it to get here,

expected him to get paid. We knew it was coming.
That the Bengals gave this much money to anybody is
a shocker. I mean you're talking about there was a
lot of money in those cooke machines. They must have
finally emptied all of those things that they used to
charge players for. I know, my guy's paying a dollar
for soda. I want you, I want you to stock
my soda machine for three years. I really am, I

really am stunned. Mike Brown and the bet we're gonna
give this guy this money even though you have to,
and this is how it's done in the NFL.

feeling for the next decade plus because Burrow is that guy. Right,

where you got Joe Mixon to come back and give
some of that money back that's now in Joe Burrow's pocket.
But good for them, right, As a guy whose teams
don't spend any money, I'm very jealous.

But on the other side of this, and I really
I feel weird saying this, but this is the bigger
part is that Burrow Burrow gets this big, big time extension, right,
fifty five million dollars a year. I really am surprised
he didn't get more. I thought he would be into
sixty million a year, and that would Burrow would be
the guy to set that bar for the next young

quarterbacks coming up for their extensions. I really, I really
thought Burrow would get more money. I really thought Burrow
would wind up getting more money. And it would be
because because fifty five million it seems kind of light.

Well it's I guess it comes a million. I guess
it comes down to this, right, everybody always wants a
little more. You like big round numbers. You like to
break it. You like to break it and leave everybody
else in the dust. But Joe Burrow, I mean two
seventy five, it's a pretty hefty amount. It would have
been a nice round number. Everybody thought to get more.
(24:49):
I thought Burrow would get more. I really, I mean,
I gotta get what are you doing? You if you're
you're you're splitting hairs? What does the matter? Fifty five?
Say No, you're talking about the guys. This is how
this is how contracts go. This is what it goes
for quarterbacks. And Burrow was the guy. There's nothing the
guy hasn't done. No into a super Bowl, He's been
deep in the playoffs, he's proven the quarterback he is,
and he was the guy. I really am surprised. Such
(25:10):
is that a new number? Right? The guarantee, we can
quibble about that a little bit because I know there's
a little bit of angst over that is, well, how
did he not get a fully guaranteed thing? Well, her
cousins did, but he's done at piecemeal, right, short Neils, Yeah,
cousin's got three years I guaranteed, right of all of that.
So you want the extra years, you give something back
a little bit. And so to nineteen nothing to sneeze at.

For those keeping score at home, it's fifty six million dollars,
that's not And that's fine because if he plays and
this team achieves as they're expected, right, because beyond the Chiefs,
they're also the favorite, right, they're the second favorite out
of the AFC. So you're expecting another potential run back
towards a super Bowl, which means, you know, we start

looking down the line of all, right, let's re up
this deal. Still, young guy, right, plenty of opportunities to
make more money out there, and so perhaps you don't push. Uh,
you got to two seventy five, you got the new
record fifty five's uh, you know, I can't drive fifty five?

Yeah, you know, but part of me, part of me
season goes. Is it really that coincidental that the guys
who just came up for their big extensions, right, the
guy all are right around fifty five? There was nobody
that you had. You had Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurtz, Justin
Herbert was fifty two and a half million. Now you
got him a fifty. How much better? Is what I'm saying,

is that how like these salaries seem like they're tamp down.

Whether it's you know, oh are you going?

You can jump in and talk collusion, but it's it's
really surprised that here's all these guys coming up and
they all get right around the same number.

least five or seven more great years, And it didn't

So the fact that they didn't come over the top

he's not a shrinking violence. But it wasn't a we
need to be able to make sure that we convert
on third down. I'm sorry, can you hear me? I'm
going to like, he's not.

We gotta get after it. Just rugs Patrick Mahomes. He's
not gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
He's not gonna Alice Cooper's way in Wayne's world. Actually
it's Milwauk, which is no, he's he's gonna do Dan
Campbell things.

But two big mistakes. Right now, we are early in
the third quarter. The Chiefs lead the Lions fourteen to seven.
So much to get to you from this game. No
Travis Kelce for the Kansas City Chiefs. No Chris Jones.
We know this the story of the game so far.
Two mistakes by the Lions, who have played pretty well
against this Chief's offense. That is missing its biggest cog
(02:15):
in the wheel. Marvin Jones's fumble deep in Chiefs territory
in the first half was rough because this is.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
When the Lions are going in.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
They're going to retake the lead at fourteen to seven
or at least ten to seven, and instead coughs it up.
All right, turnovers happen. You understand, final minute of the half.
This is a seven to seven game, and it's going
exactly how how he told you was gonna go. And
this is look and it's not just us, but you
watch the first half of Week one NFL games the
last few years, they are very difficult. They are sloggy,
(02:48):
they are sloppy because first team offenses don't get enough
time in real game time environment, so it takes a
little bit for the game to get going. You have
a seven to seven game in the final minute of
the first half and Mahomes has the ball and he
completes a pass that is three, probably near four yards
short of the first down on the chief side of midfield.
(03:10):
So the Chiefs are facing a fourth and four at
or fourth and close to four, a long three. Let's
say it's a long three fourth and a long three
on their side of midfield. It just so happens on
the Lion's luck. The first flag of the first half
is thrown and it's a holding penalty on the Chiefs,
and Dan Campbell accepts it, which is a stunning move
(03:33):
because what are you doing, right? It's fourth and four.
It's not like the Chiefs are rolling up all kinds
of points here and they're hot. Fourth and four a
minute to go in the first half. They're punting away
to ye. They're not saying, hey, we're gonna go for it.
Their offense is yet to click. They're not going to
go forward. But for some reason, Dan Campbell accepts the penalty,
(03:53):
and then you watch Mahomes convert that long third down,
giving them second life. Three plays later, they're in the
end zone on a touchdown pass to Blake Bell, who
I told you I had him right as my number
one tight end this week. So that's seven points is
on Dan Campbell. I don't understand why he took that penalty.
It's fourth and almost four yards ago from the Chiefs
(04:15):
side of midfield. In a seven to seven game, it
should be seven to seven at half time because what
the Chiefs would have likely done is we're gonna punt,
We'll call time out. Maybe at the ball back near midfield,
kick a field goal to go up ten to seven,
and instead Dan Campbell puts those seven points on the board.
Why are you giving mahomes another chance?
Speaker 3 (04:33):
But like, even if they bring the offense out and
they go for an on fourth down, they still have
to convert and you still are forcing the issue, right,
they still have to go make an additional sequence of
plays unless they can get it all and hit the
jackpot on a big playdown field, which really hasn't been
there much all night. Right, we saw one to MVS
that was it like that. Otherwise it's been get the
(04:55):
ball out, Let guys make plays, try to create some space.
You see what happens, and we talked about it last
night a lot when Travis Kelsey's not on the field,
it's bogged down. I know to start the game as
I was en root here to the Fox Sports radio
studios and you hear there's the handoff to Clyde Edwards.
(05:15):
Lalair Oh, fantasy owners are salty about that. But then
you had the great sequence of drives right the Lions,
including that fake punt, which hey, it goes right for you,
and you get a little momentum and you go on
along protracted fourteen play ninety one yard drive. Well, the
Chiefs answer thirteen plays right back, and then you're motoring
(05:38):
because what are you doing when you're looking at the lines.
You're also trying to keep Patrick Mahomes on the sideline right,
and still trying to figure out your shiny new toys, right,
Jamiir Gibbs, you've seen some success, David Montgomery. You and
I were talking a little pre show of the mix
and match, and you must really not trust Jamir Gibbs
anywhere near pass protection if he's not seeing the football.
(06:01):
So all of that to set up the play which
became an extra touchdown going into halftime.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
It was really really tough luck in the first half
for the Lions. However, sometimes luck changes. In a second

I'll take the five points, but I don't need him
because the Lions are winning this game. I hemmed in
had so much today. Do I play Kadarius Tony?
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Right? Do I play Cadarius Tony? Do not?
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Do I play Cadarius Tony or not? I don't know
how many snaps is he really gonna get? No, Travis Kelsey,
I said, no, I gotta sit him. It's too much unknown,
and I'll wait and see how things go for Sunday.
Patrick Mahomes looking at Canarius Tony for the second time
in the game. Only everybody's getting looks. The Chiefs have
had like eleven guys.

Yeah, a pass across the middle that is in Tony's hands.
There is nothing, nothing ill at ease with this play.
There's no defensive back coming, There's no defensive back right
on him. Canarius. Tony has about a yard and a
half separation from the linebacker and the ball just hits
him as he's running across the field, bounces off his

shoulder pads into the waiting arms of a Lions dB
who takes it in all the way for a six
pick six. Brian Branch rookie takes it into the house
for a touchdown, the pick six tying this game at
fourteen apiece. Lions, Ye, Lions, here come my Lions. Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions, Lions,

Lions line They're back.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Just like that, the Lions win this game.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
The Jets magic number for the number one seed overall
goes down.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
I mean, come on, goes down. No, you were depressed
as the game went into halftime. I walked into this
into the Dan Cambs for taking that. I'm starting cursing
at him in the back or like, what the hell
is he yelling with blank?

are you taking that Battlety? They're gonna punt the ball
back to you. But now the Lions they get the

how many more snaps you get in this game? If

Now one of the big things here. Uh. And we
talked about the Lions and they've been able to get
some pretty decent pressure on Mahomes. Uh. He's had to
get the ball out pretty quickly. And these receivers are
not winning. They're not winning they're one on one matchups.
So right now it's a how do we throw somebody open?
Even Mahomes getting frustrated winging the ball in the towards
the end of the first half, he just wing one downfield.
(10:56):
It was like a punt. It's like he used to
play in the street.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
It was a fifty to fifty play and the defensive
back was a split second away from picking that ball off,
but instead it goes as a completion two plays later
there in the end zone, right, fifty to fifty play.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
That did that.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
But you know, but look, Mahomes makes those plays. Sure,
you know you try. I trust Mahomes to throw those
fifty fifty Wilson to throw those fifty to fifty balls.

Zach Wilson's got to get back on the field before
he's throwing anything. But we got ourselves a new ball game.
And those that bet the over at fifty three or
fifty five, depending on when you bet it related to
the Dravis Kelcey injury news, you know, you're a bit
more ecstatic off the free seven that you just got
off the Lions defense. Fantasy owners who were really gutsy rejoice.

But it's been a bit of a slog here, and
you thought after that end of the first half touchdown
with getting the ball after deferring to the second half.
Perhaps got a little momentum you can get something going
instead some more struggles another incompletion here uh and and
Gardner Johnson starting to chirp a bit. Dan Campbell chest

is out now trying to show Robert Sala you think
you've got the puffiest chest, look at me.

It would be a Dan Campbell Robert Sala midfield fistfight
would be a close.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Well, I am cond that Sala actually has someone's spray
paint well his top on. I don't. I don't think
that's actual fabric.

I think Campbell had a longer NFL career. His body
probably is not a little bit he got warm down. Yeah,
you know, Sala I think stopped playing after Northern Michigan,
so I think he I think he more fresher.

was a guy who loved as a player, Jets and
the certainly you know he would be well Randy the
Ram if he were out there and trying to battle.
Right now, Sala's like Dylan Brooks fake, Oh stop that,

that to see the way he uses those F words.
I don't want to go. I don't want to get mad. Yeah,

he curses, he runs, and he makes crazy analogy.

what just happened and the Lions had the football again

the forty yard line of the Chiefs Riley Patterson. But
clearly the life of Riley not good enough to make
that call field goal kicker. They eschewed the field goal
that's one of my favorite words, and punted yeah to

the Chiefs, a net gain of about three and a
half feet. No, uh, down to yeah, down to the ten,
so the net gain of thirty yards. They still put
my homes down inside the ten yard line. But you
have a you have a coaching call in the first

as a head coach, it's not a good thing.

comes out to about fifty five million dollars a year.
Two hundred and nineteen million of it is guaranteed. He
is the highest paid player in NFL history. This is
Joe Burrow. On the one hand, I can say, boy,
I knew this is until Zach Wilson becomes a highest
paid play a couple of years ago. On the one hand,
even though Joe Burrow, you expected it to get here,

expected him to get paid. We knew it was coming.
That the Bengals gave this much money to anybody is
a shocker. I mean you're talking about there was a
lot of money in those cooke machines. They must have
finally emptied all of those things that they used to
charge players for. I know, my guy's paying a dollar
for soda. I want you, I want you to stock
my soda machine for three years. I really am, I
(22:10):
really am stunned. Mike Brown and the bet we're gonna
give this guy this money even though you have to,
and this is how it's done in the NFL.

I don't know that they have that much money. I
don't know that we can sign up by because I
don't really have that much. So it doesn't how much

paid anybody that kind of money, because you know, Bengals

tier to my eye when I no, it was great.

They have outdoor practicality too. They're gonna get that. I mean,
I was just waiting to see how they'd screw it up. Yeah, well,
I think it is the Bengals, But I told you,
every team you get it once in a while. When
they had drafted Joe Burrow, it was the very quickly
you saw it was gonna be the era of good
feeling for the next decade plus because Burrow is that guy. Right,
I've been telling you for two years, Burrows that look
(23:18):
at where they are. They're a yearly super Bowl threat,
and they will be because they have Joe Burrow.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
But they've also, I mean, to their credit, they've built
a really good roster, which they had done a couple
of times in their history. Sure, remember those teams Marvin
Lewis was lording over there were pretty good and then
they just couldn't get over right. They'd get you into
January and then it was early losses. So now you've
(23:42):
got the guy at the helmet and everything's pushing forward
where you got Joe Mixon to come back and give
some of that money back that's now in Joe Burrow's pocket.
But good for them, right, As a guy whose teams
don't spend any money, I'm very jealous.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
But on the other side of this, and I really
I feel weird saying this, but this is the bigger
part is that Burrow Burrow gets this big, big time extension, right,
fifty five million dollars a year. I really am surprised
he didn't get more. I thought he would be into
sixty million a year, and that would Burrow would be
the guy to set that bar for the next young
(24:18):
quarterbacks coming up for their extensions. I really, I really
thought Burrow would get more money. I really thought Burrow
would wind up getting more money. And it would be
because because fifty five million it seems kind of light.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Well it's I guess it comes a million. I guess
it comes down to this, right, everybody always wants a
little more. You like big round numbers. You like to
break it. You like to break it and leave everybody
else in the dust. But Joe Burrow, I mean two
seventy five, it's a pretty hefty amount. It would have
been a nice round number. Everybody thought to get more.
(24:49):
I thought Burrow would get more. I really, I mean,
I gotta get what are you doing? You if you're
you're you're splitting hairs? What does the matter? Fifty five?
Say No, you're talking about the guys. This is how
this is how contracts go. This is what it goes
for quarterbacks. And Burrow was the guy. There's nothing the
guy hasn't done. No into a super Bowl, He's been
deep in the playoffs, he's proven the quarterback he is,
and he was the guy. I really am surprised. Such
(25:10):
is that a new number? Right? The guarantee, we can
quibble about that a little bit because I know there's
a little bit of angst over that is, well, how
did he not get a fully guaranteed thing? Well, her
cousins did, but he's done at piecemeal, right, short Neils, Yeah,
cousin's got three years I guaranteed, right of all of that.
So you want the extra years, you give something back
a little bit. And so to nineteen nothing to sneeze at.

For those keeping score at home, it's fifty six million dollars,
that's not And that's fine because if he plays and
this team achieves as they're expected, right, because beyond the Chiefs,
they're also the favorite, right, they're the second favorite out
of the AFC. So you're expecting another potential run back
towards a super Bowl, which means, you know, we start
(25:58):
looking down the line of all, right, let's re up
this deal. Still, young guy, right, plenty of opportunities to
make more money out there, and so perhaps you don't push. Uh,
you got to two seventy five, you got the new
record fifty five's uh, you know, I can't drive fifty five?
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Yeah, you know, but part of me, part of me
season goes. Is it really that coincidental that the guys
who just came up for their big extensions, right, the
guy all are right around fifty five? There was nobody
that you had. You had Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurtz, Justin
Herbert was fifty two and a half million. Now you
got him a fifty. How much better? Is what I'm saying,

is that how like these salaries seem like they're tamp down.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Whether it's you know, oh are you going?
Speaker 1 (26:45):
You can jump in and talk collusion, but it's it's
really surprised that here's all these guys coming up and
they all get right around the same number.

Somebody's at the market usually kind of falls in line.

Yeah, but all these guys, right, I mean, really that
that many players. This is where the numbers should have
gone from fifty into the sixties.

Like it should have. It should have gone.

You're talking about four guys who are young and talented, wyant,
young and talented, and guys that are gonna have at
least five or seven more great years, And it didn't
go up as much.

But at least but I mean go back to it.
I mean you look at the Chargers, and you look
at the Bengals, not exactly teams that have been flushed
with cash to flash it around and start dropping dollar bills.
So the fact that they didn't come over the top
and say, you know what, not only are gonna make
you the record holder. You know what, there's an extra
Brinch truck that's gonna roll up. Just no, the hell

with that. Lamar Jackson's deal set where it is and
everything was gonna fall in around that.
