Let's give this part you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Greetings, Happy Monday, Welcome inside the return of the Jason
Smith Show with my bags.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Friend Mike Harmon.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Well Deth Hobo.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Happy twenty twenty six.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Many do, yeah, whether it's twenty twenty five or twenty
twenty six. Over forty years, tire Rack's been open. Customers
find the right tires for how, what and where they drive.
Ship fast and free backed by free Road, has a
protection with convenient installation option. Was like mobile tire installation.
Tirerack dot Com is the way tire buying should be.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Well, here we are back after winter break. Right, it's
like back in school. What did you do then? I
did this? I did this, I did what you do?
It's great? Yeah, it's great.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Now we're back and I'm I'm excited, Like I'm like
a kid the first day going back to school, wearing
all the new clothes.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
That I got. Good look at Swatch my dad.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
My dad got me a Jets hoodie and I'm like, well,
I'll wear it today and then I'll burn it. Uh,
you know the new pants. I'm like, yeah, I'm wearing
all my new clothes the first day back. It's exciting.
Your hair is longer. You have long hair in the back. Yeah, well,
I mean I usually have a hat on you. Yeah,
but you covered it up. But your hair is longer.
And I'm trying to think. I'm trying to think, what
coach you know? You look like Dama Halgerson. Nice yet
(01:44):
the long back.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Yeah, Unfortunately, it's starting to look mullet like, so it's
gonna have to get chopped here in short order. I
just had a doing the Early Morning Sunday Show.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
I love doing it.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
Greg Cosell was out this week, so Jared Smith stepped in. Uh,
but I'm a wreck on Monday, so I have to
take a long nap. So that took up what should
have been a haircut time. Yeah, but it did not
stop my phone going bleep bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, that
guy fire? Why is it that guy fire? And all
of those kind of news items over the course of
the day. So beautiful to be back with you guys,
(02:17):
a long long time coming as we get ready for
another big year.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
And now Frostburg hates the Patriots just as much as
I do. Sure as he is getting set for the
Charger Patriots game this weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
What are you talking about? I love the Patriots. How
do you love the Patriots? You'll see Sunday night?
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Okay, okay, Well, because they've tormented the Jets low these
many years.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, and after a Charger victory is what he's.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Saying here, we move on, no road dogs and a
week off for Justin Herbert. We got to see the
Trey Lance experience.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, that was that was somewhat exciting.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
He was one of sixty two this year, one of
sixty two starting quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
You know very well they're frauds. Yeah no, no, hey dude,
I am, I am.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
I'm looking football like you. No, No, I am looking
for the two games. I'm looking forward to the most,
to seeing teams get exposed this weekend. I'm looking forward
to that game Sunday night, charged with the Patriots, and
I'm really looking forward to Texans Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night,
looking forward to that. Those those one hundred.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
Yeah see, I think we might differ on one of those.
But it is interesting that all of a sudden this
week something we've been harping on over the course of
the year, and you could do it with my Bears
as well, with some of their strength of schedule and
their victories. I mean they were only two and four
in division and all of that stuff. Is as the
MVP talk really picked up this week to a fever
(03:41):
pitch with Stafford and having a big game against Arizona
and Drake May, suddenly the Patriots schedule started to really
become a big topic of conversation.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, something we did all year long.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Gun.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I mean you look, you can only beat who's on it.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Right again, if it gets you to a double digit win, too,
you take advantage of it, because guess what next year
is gonna flip? Oh, sure, Bears had a week schedule
this year. Guess what happens. Hardest schedule Yeah, by the books,
of course, then you have to play all two hundred
and seventy two glorious games and we find out what
it looks like a year from now. But but yes,
that is part of the math that is going on,
(04:19):
not only for the MVP race, but as we look
ahead to the wild Card weekend and the chaos to come.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Now, before we get started, I want, I want to
say this because I've been waiting to throw this by
you since for about six days. Now six days, okay,
so the over the break and we'll get to the coaches.
We got everything going on tonight. But I really I
had the greatest star sighting on vacation, and I want
(04:44):
to see you guys here. I'll tell I'm gonna tell
you where I was. We went to Yosemite for New
Year's and it was awesome, right, great time?
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Was it? Maybe New Year's Day? No New Year's Eve?
New Year's Eve.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
We're in the park and we're you know, you're hiking
to all these different locations you hiking and we're going, dude,
were you drinking on the hike? Is like a beer?
I'm gonna tell you my new body. We did a
six mile hike on on on on December thirtieth, and
I felt great after. I was like, I was so
(05:20):
dreading it. The night before going walking. He's gonna be
a six months is gonna be hill in your backyard?
It's not, dude. We did a six ke hike. Hey,
that's running up the hill. Get it right.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I was like, man, this is awesome, hunking. I love that.
This is great. I love I love it. I felt great.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
So now you're gonna be grizzly Adams. You watch it
at walking stake, mister outdoors.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Now that's me. Yeah, all of a sudden, I'm shopping
at RII all the time. Yeah. Actually, gonna grow that beer.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
So we're going to one of the waterfalls and were
you chasing it? Well, I was chasing. They said, well,
they said don't go chasing it, but I chased it.
And then they said no, stick to the rivers in
the lakes you're used to. And so we're walking up
to the vantage point for the waterfall and walking by
me boom and I go and Pam's like like, oh, Pam, Pam,
(06:07):
And I say that's in. Pam looks, oh my god.
And we're with our cousin and the movie this person
is known for. It's one of her favorite movies. But
she was at a different location and I felt so
bad because I'm like, oh, Sam, this is her favorite
movie and she would have got to see this person
from this movie. And I was like, oh man, but
(06:27):
she was, you know, twenty minutes away the place. So
we're like, she didn't believe us when we told her
who we saw. She was no, I said, trust me,
trust me, So I'll see you guys. Guess who it is?
From a sports movie? Okay, sports movie, sports movie, huge
sports movie, incredibly popular sports movie ninetieska but still incredibly
popular today. This is really the only movie this person,
(06:52):
this actor is known for. They've done other things, but
this is the but it doesn't matter because this person
was so popular in this movie. There's t shirt you
could buy today with this person's picture on it and
the big quote that they have from the that that
it's attributed to this character with this character from the
movie like that that. Like I'm gonna say, you're gonna go,
oh my god. And luckily I just I happen to
(07:15):
know what this person looked like in later years because
because you know this now it's thirty years going. Yeah,
and I'm like, oh my god, that's bad.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
We're right away.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
We don't like, oh, we should we say something, but
I'm like, ah, this person probably gets stuff like that,
so active.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Or only I don't know that.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
I don't know how active they are now. But really
the only like if I said, you're like, oh, yes,
and this is the only movie they're known for. But
they had such a big role in this movie. This
movie is the Nerds movie in the nineties, classic, absolute
classic movie. You've probably seen it fifteen twenty times.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
That's good.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
It's a good one, ty shirt and you got a
guess or.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
No, Samos, it's not John, Yes it was.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
It was not.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
It was both of the Olsen twins and John Stables
breaking news. Wait which twin look better? Uh? In order?
In order?
Speaker 1 (08:05):
In like top twenty five. Mary Kalkay so nineties movie. Okay,
now I'll give you. I'll give you a hint. Was
a kid actor in the movie. So an adult now
and luckily I knew what they love justin Cooper not
just oh every night at midnight when he walks the claw.
(08:27):
I mean that would make it a sports movie, law
this complete sports movie, baseball movie, baseball movie. So it
can't be about one of the kids from the Sandlod.
Actor Mike Harmon take a guess. Oh, I have no
idea what any of their names are? Small Small, And
I wanted to say, you're killing me small, Yeah, I
(08:47):
wouldn't beg Yeah, I would not have been able to
pick Niggy Smash I was.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I was thinking of an actor name.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yes, I was like, oh my god, it's small. That's
Smalls from the Sandlot. He's hiking and for me, Smalls
makes a good six figures a year. Going to calm, like, wow,
that's awesome. And my cousin was so, she goes, no,
you're lying. You're like, no, I swear to God. And
you could see how excited we were at the edge's like,
oh you guys weren't kidding.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
We saw Smalls. He was there, man, one of his
head's awesome.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
But like he's with his family and stuff, like he
you walk up to him, you're killing me smoke great.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Thanks thanks a lot for that.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Thanks.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Like the hiker went over the edge John New Year's Day,
he would not see twenty twenty six, This what happened.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
This former child star is on trial for murder after
throwing a radio host overheld copy of tam in Yosemite.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
And then he threw the shirt down after and said,
you're killing me.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Here's video of Jason Smith going over yelling Jets you
one final time. No, I was so excited. I'm like,
oh my god, I saw small and I was gonna
tweet out that I but I'm like, no, I gotta
save it for the show.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Gotta save it. That's pretty impressive.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's good and being good eye, good eye,
and being able to tell this story takes me away
from the fact that the Knicks got absolutely drubbed by
the Pistons tonight and have lost four games.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
In a row.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
On the side, I mean, the Pistons were a team
you were really excited about two years ago. And now
there's two things. There's two sides of this, right, No.
Number one, I don't know why we're still playing basketball.
The Knicks won the title. I saw the confetti, I
saw everything. I don't know why, but they already won.
So what does it matter until there's a parade but
down the streets of New York City and a banner
(10:30):
is raised.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Hi, So I know.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
James Dolan spoke for the first time. Yeah, for I
forgot what I mean, I know his singing voice. I know,
you know, he's on the radio in New York today
talking about the Knicks for the first time in two years, saying, hey,
we can win a title as we're constructed.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
I'm like, of course we can't, because we already won
the title.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
I watched the confetti come down, I watch hats go
on and T shirts that we already want. I don't
know why we're still playing the NBA. I don't know why.
So am I really concerned about the next one before?
Speaker 3 (10:55):
No, I'm not.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
It's the middle of January, beginning of January, and again
we've already won the title.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
But I mean a new season started on Christmas Dames.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Anyway, to focus on the other part of this is
what did I tell you? I mean again, to go
back my two bold prediction picks in the preseason, I said,
you want two NBA finals bowld prediction picks, one in
each conference where the odds were ten thousand or more.
And I gave you the Spurs in the West and
the Pistons in the East. And look at the Pistons
(11:22):
right second night of a back to back, they got
you know, Ivy coming off the bench now and he
has a big night and they're young and they don't
know what they don't know, and if you don't come
ready to play, they are gonna run you out of
the gym.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Right.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
The Pistons are absolutely legit. They should wind up being
the number one seed because they're young, they're deep, they're
everything I thought they would be. Everything is finally coming
together for them. And not only are they gonna wind
up being I mean, this was probably an Eastern Conference
Final preview tonight. I mean the end result will be
different when when the game's were.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
That's gonna say.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
I mean, Jalen Bronson, if that's the look he's got
an Eastern Conference Final preview, Man, I want that is
the next Top's living car like he immortalized like a statue.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
We held he won the title. I don't know, I
don't know what. Everybody's so nervous, but the Knicks won
the time.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
I saw everything. I don't know. I saw a sad
face Jalen Brunson earlier.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
By the way, forty six and a half was their
total before the season, thirty three to one odds.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, this was a look the two teams. When you
when you look at what's going in the Eastern Conference,
this year. You know, it's a year of flux and
a year of change with the Celtics trying to do
it without Jason Tate. Jalen Brown's doing his best after right.
I look, and the Celtics are staying afloat as much
as they can. Clearly, the trade deadline is going to
be there for some teams to make their teams better.
But the Cavaliers are not what they were the Indiana Pacers.
(12:38):
Maybe Halliburton is the real MVP of the NBA because
they're terrible without him. So there's nothing that really scares you.
And these look, Orlando is a nice team. The Knicks
are the bed Knicks have the most talent. But look
at this Pistons team. They're young, they're deep, there everything.
This is where teams come in and seize and seize
the moment, and they are seizing this opportunity. They played
harder tonight on the second night back then and.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
They're just like going through the motions.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Now.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Look for the Knicks, it is Yes, it's the middle
of January. We're pretty good. We're gonna be a top
three team in the East. How big is home court advent?
Everything goes along you don't know what's gonna happen the
NBA season regular season. For the veteran teams or teams
that have gone through, it means less and less. For
the Pistons, they don't know any better. It's hey, we
want to get out there and get that number one seed,
and that's great, but you see that being the number
(13:23):
one seed is not quite what it was years ago
in the NBA. But here's a young team that, hey,
we don't know any better. Not that we're gonna go,
but it's like, hey, okay, yeah, it's great to see this,
but when we get to the playoffs, things are gonna
be a little bit different. But the Pistons are absolutely
If you didn't think they were legit, they are absolutely legit.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
Well we'll talk about it as the night goes on,
because certainly a lot of consternation across the NFL cities
for a couple of teams that still had opportunity to
improve their seating and said, to hell with it, we're
sitting our guys down right, and we're gonna sit out
Week eighteen and move on. With the NBA. You have
the same thing. The long arde is eighty two game
seed and the only thing that matters is you enter
(14:02):
mid April with as much of your rotation intact as possible.
And for the Knicks, the way it's run in the past,
obviously there's some change, but it's still not the greatest
of depth situations. When we're talking about running eight nine deep. No,
you're still seven guys. So what do you have to do.
You've got to do whatever you can during the course
(14:25):
of these months to be judicious about what Brunson's doing,
certainly what Cat's doing, so you don't run yourself into
a situation whereby come April, they've got nothing left. Man,
that we've watched teams do that year after year.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
So yeah, the eighty.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Two games, as much as the number one seed, ain't
getting you a giant bonus. If suddenly we start playing
to that of hey, if you earn the number one seed,
it's here's another T shirt and hat ceremony and another
million dollars in your coll for per man, then maybe
they buck up and there's a chase for it. But
until that you're gonna have a situation like tonight, it's like,
(15:00):
all right, this game's done. Let guys run out there
as the second team and let's live to fight another day.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Exit out about a Fresco exit, swalling down. The Jason

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Fox Sports Radio the Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Uh so, quick story, real fast. I
want to tell you. Yeah, so you know that website
you tell me about players trunk dot com right, all
the equipment managers across the country who get together and
all the kid all the kids who transfer you can
buy their team owned gear, right or players trying to
(16:36):
make exactly so. And you know my wife hates you
for introducing that website to me. Yeah, so right now tonight,
Montana State beating Illinois State in the FCS National Championship.
Still about halfway through the fourth quarter, but Montana State
is winning. Montana State's quarterback is Justin Lamson. You remember
his name because he's been around Stanford for a couple
(16:57):
of years. But once upon a time will Syracuse University's
quarterback and wait, he's gonna be the next starting quarterback.
Didn't work out and he transferred. For Christmas, I bought
my dad a pair of Justin Lampson's pants team issued Syracuse,
not Waite bobs, but Justin Lambs. Justin Lampson's pants because
it's the same number my dad wore when he played
(17:19):
sports two wore ten. I'm like, oh, I'll get him
because Justin Lampson wore ten. My dad wore ten. So
I called him and I said, hey, those pants I
gave you.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
You know.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
He's like, oh, Justin lamps He goes, yeah, I think
you kind of remember the name of because oh, okay, okay.
So when the game was going on tonight, I'm like, Dad,
turn on ESPN. Justin Lampson, you have his pants. He goes,
I gotta go put him on. So now my dad
is watching the end of this game wearing Justin Lampson's
team issued Syrahcu sweatpants.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
That is phantasmic's happening right now.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
See, I thought you were gonna tell me you bought
out the entire Hunter Dickinson collection that they put up there.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
No, no, no, certain things are tough to get to,
like they when they have it, when they have a
trunk drop and it's like, oh, I'll go at the
next day.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
No.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Sometimes stets up just going on.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
The Northwestern stuff all sells out almost instantly. I think
Darren Ravel buys it all. So I don't think I
ever have a chance.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Exit out out a Fresca exit swollen down. My dad
very proud. Do you think blue Derek's pants. You think
that diseases? I think I can touch that.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Joining us now in the hotline for all the big
news in the NFL. Well, you know him from Odyssey
one of five seven the Fan in Baltimore Washington Post.
He is now also the new field goal kicker for
the Baltimore Ravens. It is Jason locking for a Jay.
What's happening?
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Man?
Speaker 4 (18:33):
Is he? What is that website you're talking about?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
What's happened?
Speaker 4 (18:37):
Was that website? He said something?
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Trunk the players, Trunk dot.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Com, Layer's Trunk.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Sty Sweet, all sorts of jerseys and T shirts and shorts,
you name it, practice issued whatever.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
So yeah, oh you love it.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Man.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
My dad, like I said, my dad's weren't just to live.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
So first of all, let me ask, uh, well, how
are you today after that.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Lost last night?
Speaker 4 (19:02):
I'm doing better than my kids. I hit pretty much
every better had on that game. So I sat there
and greaving with them, and sat up with the eighth
grader while he cried himself to sleep. But I look,
we talked about it on my radio show last week.
We do this segment where we make predictions, you know,
(19:24):
bold predictions before the game and one of my co
hosts was like, you know, big Looper is going to
hit like a forty yard or forty eight yard or
fifty yard field goal to win the game. And I'm like, bro,
you better hope not. And he's like, what do you mean.
I'm like, you better hope Lamar Derek Henry puts this
thing away with a touchdown or a kneel down, because
if it comes out of this kid, Alan, you're making
(19:45):
the kid. He's never been tested. I mean they handed
him the job. They brought in no competition. They had
an undrafted kid, the Battle of the Kid, you know,
the kid pick, and they cut the undrafted kids like
a week in the camp and they never brought in
any veteran competition. And the way the season went, he
never got put in any clutch situations, and in the
(20:07):
second half as it got colder, and he was never
really good from more than fifty and again people allowed
to have growing pains. And it's not even about the kid,
but it's about the situation. Like we're talking in like November,
and I'm like, would you bring in an established kicker
to compete with him on a Tuesday? Even though he
hasn't lost a job yet. Just to simulate pressure, you
(20:28):
know what I mean, to simulate what it could mean
if his first kick of the year is with the
season on the line, his first real kick of the year,
his first attempted game winning truly clutch kick happens when
it really matters a ton, like in the playoffs. And
that was basically a playoff game, and they botched your
midfield fifty three seconds, three time outs. Kerrick Henry's running
(20:50):
pretty much bolder than them. But Derrick Henry has been
taking pitch place to the house in the fourth quarter
of his whole career. And they never put the ball
in his hands even though he was on the field
in a two minute trail. He's never into two minute trails,
So that was odds. The kneel down that calls themselves
a few yards and more time. I just they played
their whole season with no urgency. Their final drive of
(21:11):
the season didn't have the proper sense of urgency. Hardballs
off the plot the GM Eric de Costa, I don't
know if he's ever had the plot. And the most
overrated front office in the NFL. Every year, the drafts
are the most overrated all their buddies in the media
as a pluses, as everybody says how smart they are
in the off season, even though they don't really add
(21:32):
players who are any good from any other organizations. They
don't have any pass rush to speak of. I mean, well,
we know these games and these broadcasters, and it's hit
in production meetings, and you know, they want to be
buddies with everybody, and they're not really outside the rip people.
The way Chris collins Worth on a national broadcast talked
about their lack of pass rush. You just don't. You
(21:54):
don't see it that often in the industry, especially for
allegedly great front offices that build allegedly great rosters and
have everybody stroked him all the time. I mean he
was calling him out left and right because he had
no choice. I mean, Aaron Rodgers in two desperation games,
dropped back eighty five times against him. They breathed on
him six times, they sacked him twice. He threw eighty
(22:16):
one passes. They didn't intercept any of them. Everybody knw
where the ball's gone. So in a game roll it's
going to Warrant, it was going to Washington's. Well, he
got hurt so now it's going to fire Booth and
this team that does nothing but load up on defensive backs.
None of them can tackle, and none of them may
players on the ball. And you couple that with the
team that's inherently built not to rush the quarterback because
(22:37):
no one on a team can. They had one guy
who kind of could, oh way, and then he got
to the Chargers and he really could. Ye in the return,
they got a safety who doesn't really tackle and got
beat from more twenty yard players than any safety in
the league. So I don't know, man, Yeah, it's tough
times around here right now. But the kicker, I mean again,
(22:59):
they could have sign a veteran picker. They held on
to scumming Justin Tucker till after the draft, and then
at that point in time, most of the good pickers
are off the street, and so they wanted to go
young and cheap and show how smart they are. Well,
guess luck and I smarter they think they are.
Speaker 5 (23:12):
I'm still holding up a picture with Derrick Henry's face
on it to ask more questions there. But the bigger
question that looms for the year Lamar Jackson being asked
about his future saying not my focus, not what you
know we're talking about.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
Now, how does this end?
Speaker 4 (23:30):
Well, it ends with one coordinator, definitely non defensive coordinator
z at or Pop Munkin maybe moving on. And look,
I would fight John Hobball and Atasta. They've been tied together,
the contracts are tied together. When one gets an extension,
the other one gets an extension. You know they're supposed
to be end this together. I'm not letting the Costa
(23:50):
pick the coach. I'm not sending a message that, oh yeah,
personnel isn't really a massive part of this, because personnel
is a massive part of this. Do I think we'll
fire them both? I'm not sure. I mean my hunch
is probably not. But he might not fire any of them.
He might just throw the Mike Brown route, and you know,
(24:11):
keep his money in his pocket and doesn't want to
pay people to leave and doesn't want to deal with
all that. And I'll just keep kicking the can out here,
and we'll just keep wasting the best years of Lamar's career,
and we keep building teams that don't get pickaways, that
don't get that don't get any pass rush, and that
blow ten point leads in the fourth quarter, or eight
point leads in the fourth quarter, or doesn't point leads
in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Jason Locking for our guest Jason Smith Mike Harmon live
from the Fox Sports Radio studios. Are you mentioned guys
getting fired? We've had four head coaches let go on
Black Monday, Pete Carroll, let go Kevin Stefanski, Jonathan Gannon,
Raheem Morris. Any of these surprise you at all? Or
these like hey, yup up expecting all of these and
now we're moving.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
On stuff I chronicled in my final columns at the
Washington Post, and everything I said was going to happen,
ran I heard was going to happen, it happened. There
were a lot of people out there saying Gannon was
going to be Okay, come on, you know the Dolphins,
We're going to kick the can with McDaniel. That was
pretty clear about a month ago. I still think there
(25:14):
will be other dominoes that fall. The horrible thing we
just talked about. I you know, I still think there's
a chance that Andy Reid could maybe decide to move on, retire,
quasi retire, something like that. There's always a surprise, something
always sort of comes out of left field. You know,
(25:36):
I don't know. Does somebody lose in the playoffs and
an owner get it's a trigger finger. I mean, I
doubt it, Tampa. You know, I wonder maybe there's a
shoot to drop there. But so far it's been basically, uh,
basically you know what what I expected. So people who think, well,
(26:00):
lawyers people would think, well, for I don't know if
i'd buy it. I mean, you talk to some coaching agency,
talk to some executives, like they wonder, you know, Ben Johnson,
a visceerrates them, and I don't think, sorry, but I
don't think your bears are going to Visery then. But
there's a little bit of chatter about that. I know
some coaches out there, coaching candidates are kind of wondering, hoping,
(26:24):
thinking that could become open because obviously that's immediately a
coveted job. But my suspicion is it not.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
Yeah, I would be a curiosity there, certainly if the
way they go down the stretch here and all the injuries.
But we look at Stefanski gets fired, but Barry sticks around.
And even when Haslam's making his speech, Jason, he's talking
about the personnel and all the limitations yet he gets
to pick the next set of groceries.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
I'm a little worse.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
That's what people around the league were expecting that it
would go down this way, in large part because this
draft class looks pretty and because this guy's taken a
lot of heat in the past for tearing the whole
thing down, and he likes having you know, sort of
analytically minded guy around and very that was deep Night,
(27:13):
That's very and deep Podesta. But you know, Deep Penedesta's gone.
I wouldn't be shocked if after the draft that bring
in another personal person and then maybe reshuffle around some
titles and you know, Barry kind of gets kicked upstairs
and somebody else maybe comes in to do some of
the GM stuff. That's a sort of chatter that's been
out there in scouting circles for a while now. But no,
(27:35):
I did not think he was going to be let go.
I mean, look, some of these franchises just can't get
out of their own way, and it was time for
Stefanski to move on. But Stefansky obviously had the best
friend there that any coach has had under has them
and they might find themselves hard pressed to replace them
and find somebody to do what the fancy did, which
(27:56):
again he had to go. And I know he didn't
want to be there anymore. He made it a real
clear with the way you ran the team for a while,
youn't want to be there anymore. So I get all that,
but I mean, this division is just in a weird minute.
You know, if Tomlin loses that game, he's maybe gone. Tomlin,
if he gets Black next week, could still maybe be gone.
(28:17):
Lak Jail was staying because the owners too, chief and
the Browns are rebooting again. Man, it's something.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
He's on Twitter at Jason Locking for that is at
Jason lock and fora Jay has always by check out.
Wanna bet as well? Jay, Thanks so much man, We'll
talk to you next week. Enjoy the games this weekend.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Thank you guys do the same.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Thanks hey, Jason.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Thanks And now that we like to talk about teams
that are train wrecks and entire fires and absoudnderstand. But
sometimes when an entire division is a tire fire, like
I mean, you had Mike Tomlin posing after a game
after a guy missed a forty four year langrong, ain't
got Blake, got me hold Denzel moment not that they
(29:00):
made it, not that they made a big player. Rogers
threw a touchdown and they got a big sack on
fourth down. No, a guy missed a field goal.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
And he's like, because if he makes that field goal,
he probably gets fired for going for it on fourth
and it's in a yard you know, going fourth and
goal and not kicking the field goal in the first half.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
Rcton's vision is just But really, you know, and Jason
talked about it really briefly, but I want to sink
this is really important.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Twelve seconds left in the game, they have a time out.
They got three time out.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
It's a forty four yard field goal. When you settle
for a field goal, this is what happens. This is
a forty four yard field goal on a Sunday night
in the mist and the swirling wind in Pittsburgh where
you know the the overall I think the overall field
goal percentage by opponents is in the bottom.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
Third of the league. Yeah, you can't.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
You had a priest walk around with holy water and
bless it. Thea had bookie priest Mike North Dan hit
hit there, that's a classic. But you had you settle
for a thirty yard field goal. Forty four yard field
goal into with all this going on, is still a thing.
As good as kickers are, You're not in a great
kicking situation. You have twelve seconds in a time out,
(30:11):
get further down the field. But when you settle for
a field goal, stuff like this happens. So I'm settling
for a forty four year fIF Jason talk first big kick.
He had first thing, everything first everything.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
You have time.
Speaker 1 (30:22):
I trust Lamar Jackson to be able to not be
a quarterback that runs around and takes twelve seconds off
the clock. Right, run a play, try to get something
because you know what, another five yards maybe the field
goal is good. Another five maybe.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Get another ten yard that the field goal is good.
You have the timeout. What are you doing when you
settle for a field goal from that distance and you biffit?
You deserve to lose.
Speaker 5 (30:43):
But generally, you and I, watching as many games as
we have together through the years, what do I complain
about in the first quarter? Why are we settling for
field goals? Why are we Yeah? Three points, that's great.
You got a long game ahead of you. And in
this case, Derick Henry had fifteen carries, one hundred and
twelve yards in the first half five carries fourteen yards
and the second half. I mean, I get it, he's
(31:04):
had some fumbling issues. You're telling me that road grader
the way he's been running the last month. You know
when you actually used him that you couldn't have picked
up a couple more yards because you have the time
out in your back pocket. We watched Harball up and
down the line, tell him the official what he wanted
to do, and then you take the knee exit.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
Ou about a Fresco exit swollen dome. Jason Smith Mike
Carmon Live from the Fox Sports Radio studios, time how
to find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.
So someone who he thought wasn't gonna make it through
the finale of Stranger Things but survived.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
It's premiureau whatever.
Speaker 7 (31:35):
I have no idea what to respond to that. I
haven't watched that show in like five years.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
Oh, Darth Vader shows up at the end, Oh really
and fights against what about you Voka? Uh No, Chewbacca's
not in the he actually died in season three.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
Whoa spoiler.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Alternate cut Man with the Teddy Bears. That's the best
one return of the Jedi with the Teddy Bears.
Speaker 7 (31:55):
I just like, don't it just took too long in
between seasons for me to like really keep up with it. No,
that's why anyways, So I'm sorry, Jason. Yeah, so I
was talking kind of like I wasn't talking that bad
about the Knicks, but yeah, they lost four straight. After
they fall to the Pistons.
Speaker 3 (32:09):
One one to ninety.
Speaker 7 (32:10):
Kid Cunningham twenty nine points and thirteen assists in the game.
And I didn't know Detroit was on a back to back.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Who else? Is none of this matter? The Nicks won
the championship already. I don't understand that's why.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
They're going to raise the banner. Oh wait, they said
that they weren't that they really wanted to save that
for an actual championship, Right, what's your opinion on that.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
We already won a championship already hit the second one.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
No banner.
Speaker 7 (32:33):
Does it count if there's no banner?
Speaker 4 (32:34):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Because I saw it happen.
Speaker 7 (32:36):
Okay, that sounds lovely. So, speaking of a back to back,
the Suns were on a back to back. Devin Booker
had hit a last minute shot yesterday they beat the
Thunder The Sun's beats the Thunder Today the Rockets Kevin
Durant hit a last minute three pointer to beat the
Suns one hundred to ninety seven, which is really depressing.
The Celtics beat the Bulls one fifteen to one oh one.
(32:56):
The Raptors outscore the Hawks won eighteen to one hundred.
Other news out of the NBA, four time All Star
Trey Young and his agent are working together with the
Hawks on a trade. The Washington Wizards look to be
a possible trade destination centered around CJ McCollums expiring contract
in the NFL. Former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is
expected to meet with the Falcons, Giants, and Titans. The
(33:18):
Colts are retaining head coach Shann Steichen and GM Chris Ballard.
And in the FCS National Championship, it is all tied up.
Twenty eight, twenty eight, fifty seven seconds left to.
Speaker 1 (33:27):

Four head coaches fired. We got big stuff going on
the next forty five minutes here, all head coaching stuff.
The head coaching firing today that just made me so
made you say, me said, and I'm still sad right now.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
I can see it. It's next right here, Jason and
Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. We're back Black Monday in the NFL.
Four coaches well counting Raheem Morris who was fired last
night into NFL Black Monday, and those other guys that
were long and the other guys who had been already fired.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
But it's about the day.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
So I think if you get fired, like within twelve,
if you get fired anytime after your final game Sunday,
or maybe even into a little bit of Tuesday, where hey,
we just wanted to make sure before we fired you,
like that still becomes a Black Monday thing, Like Okay,
you're still You're still NFL Black Monday.
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Let's Bryan don't call me Bo Callahan and Ryan Dable
don't care any no, no, no, no, no no.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Those guys are going now. The one firing.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Not that I disagreed with this, right the old Seinfeld
Not not that I disagreed with this, but it just
made me sad. And I didn't realize how sad I
was until I just saw the b Roll video when
they were talking about him getting fired and seeing him
on you know, video of him from the season on
the field, excited, slapping hands with everybody. I just got
sad when when the Raiders fired Pete Carroll because I
(35:29):
just knowing just look at the video, it just hit
me with the emotion of he.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
Was so excitable. He's like, you know, he's like Dick Clark.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
He's the world's oldest teenager right, still actually done, seventy
five years old, with more energy than most people do,
still excited to be on a football field, wanted to
get back on after getting fired from from Seattle. Took
the job with the Raiders because you know, there's only
thirty two of them, and just seeing him, seeing how
excited he still was to be out there and on
the field, but just knowing that this is it because
(35:57):
Pete Carroll, that he's walking away from the NFL well
after a failed year with the Raiders, and it sucks
for his legacy, but hey, he wanted to get back
in and coach. I just felt sad for him because
like certain coaches like this who have been to a
couple of Super Bowls and won one, and there's you know,
it's not a big brotherhood of guys that have won
super Bowls, you know, and Andy Reid is winning every
(36:18):
other one.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
I just felt sad for him.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
I just felt sad that this is this is how
it ends for Pete Carroll, who is just so excitable
and so happy to be on a football field. Not
that he didn't make mistakes, not they didn't deserve it.
It's just sad to see that this is the end.
Especially and oh, looks at he had so much He
had so much life left in him. He was still
wearing those air Monarchs around the field where there's big
wide feet like I have, and still excited about.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
I just felt sad for the Yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:42):
And meanwhile, Seattle rolls on in the post Pete Carroll
era usc still floundering. Can he come and relieve Lincoln
Riley and go back to the glory days of old
before he left like a thief in the night at
that one.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
All of that stuff is the statute limitations gone, like
if I came back and not gonna the show.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Cost stuff is done with a harball penalty, right, like
if I'm coming back to college football too soon?
Speaker 3 (37:07):
Right, not gonna do that.
Speaker 5 (37:07):
But all of that to say, this year it's interesting,
right because spy Tech and Tom Brady will be the
guys going forward.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
Well, spy Tech put this.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
Team together, yeah right, I mean Pete stumped it and
got his guy Gino Smith there, and he could hit
the broad side of a barn. It was a turnover
machine behind one of the worst offensive lines we've seen
collectively in a long long time. Miller getting hurt obviously
took the one positive piece out of it. Genty was
good in spots, but not overwhelming. Bowers got hurt like
(37:40):
all that Crosby missed some time. Like all of these
things that, like the few stars that you had weren't
available to you, and the roster was trash in a
division that was pretty good. You even had the Chiefs
had this giant fallback, Mahomes eventually gets hurt, but they
were already sputtering, already staggering back into the corn as
if they'd been hit with a couple of bolo punches.
(38:04):
But you couldn't do anything with it.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
As you said, all of that with with with Pete
Carroll and the Raiders, the one thing to go back
to is that no matter how bad a season that
it was, no matter what it was, if he got
the quarterback right, he would still have a job. It
wouldn't be drafting number one overall taking another quarterback. If
he got the quarterback right, there would be a sense
of Okay. Pete came in and you needed somebody that
(38:29):
you would think would stop the backsliding right, and Pete
was the right guy at the right time. He's the
right guy to higher then because you need some sort
of stability, and Pete Carroll's stopped the backsliding. Brady comes in.
Gino Smith had been pretty good with with Carol for
his career in Seattle. I liked the high It was
the right call at the time. Doesn't mean it worked out,
but it was the right call at the time, and
(38:50):
had he gotten the quarterback right or just less wrong,
he would still be the Raiders head coach. But that
but that's what it boils. It does all this other
stuff with the with the with the with gent and
everybody else, And I get it in Bowers and all,
I get it. But if he got the quarterback just
a little bit more right, he would still be the
head coach. But he didn't, and it's just his time.
(39:11):
It's time for them to move on. It's time for
him to be done coaching in the NFL. And that's
why I said, because this is it from me. It's
just his natural time to say, Okay, it's time for
me to go whatever else he wants to do in football,
but being a head coach, it's not gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (39:23):
Because when we at seventy four years old, had an
opportunity here and unfortunately biffed it. It's unfortunate that his
age has to become part of the discussion, right in
terms of can you get a out of a shot?
It's what we talked about with Belichick going to North
Carolina and everything else that you wonder if it's that
(39:44):
natural cycle. But yeah, tying yourself to Gino Smith and
him being absolutely atrocious.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Because I'm sure that he kills you.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
It's not gonna be a great year, but it will
be a a settlement year where we're gonna settle in
and we're gonna, you know, we'll win six or seven
games and we'll show you that we're on the way up. Right,
It's going to be a year where, Okay, I know
the floor is going to be high, and it's said
the floor is incredible, but that's.
Speaker 5 (40:06):
Just it, right, the floor higher. I saw some expected
values that it said, well, your range could be as
high as nine wins, and there were people looking at
them as a playoff squad right on paper with again
some of the star power that you had on both
sides of the ball, and Carlson is your kicker. Unfortunately,
it all went to hell with every passing interception, the
(40:26):
one to one touchdown to interception rate in today's NFL
at getting it done.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Thank you, Pete Carroll again had a good run. Well,
you had a great run. Great run.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
It's just I'm sad. It's okay to be sad at
the end. You can be sad at the end of it.
You're very so sad at the end I'm sad forget that.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
It's like some of the.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Movies I watched in wasted hours, unless coach wearing the
air Monarchs would size six eight feet like me. I
might have a pair for you coming up next. What
fired head coach today will be a head coach in
the NFL next season.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
We'll tell you Fox,
