New Year's Eve, a lot of New Year's Day, usually
not the same in the same year that our boss
is pretty good about mixing it up. I love New
Year's Eve because, first of all, I don't even consider
it like.

A real holiday. It's not like the stores are closed,
you know what I mean.

It's not like, oh, Fiji, I better hurry out to
the market because the market's gonna close, or the seven
to eleven is is gonna close.

Everything's open. Everybody's out partying.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Everybody's out there just going nuts, so you know, it's
like amateur hour. Of course, everybody's drinking like crazy out there,
so it's kind of like a made up holiday if you.

Consider that too. There's so much sports going on.

We got the first game of the playoffs of the
next round of the Quarterfinals. We got three games tomorrow,
We got the final week of the NFL season, and
tons of people VJ believe it or not, they don't
go out for New Years. They're sitting at home, they're relaxing,
they're watching the game. They're listening to us, just like
(02:28):
millions and millions of other people that just say, I'm
punting on going out. Did you see the mess that
was down there at Times Square? They had to move
the barriers back because people were pushing and they were
squishing people there, you know, like in a soccer game
in Europe or something like that, and they had to
get people out from the barrier because it was getting dangerous.

It was getting crazy already down there at Times Square.
So people said, hey, I'm punting on this sitting at
home watching the game, and listen does tonight on Fox Sports?

Ready? Yeah, man, it's crazy out here. It's raining, and
you know, out southern California, nobody knows how to drive
if they're from Southern California. The days it rains, it
slows down everything because they're not used to it. Now. Myself,
being raised back East with four you know, legitimate seasons,
I drive ice the snow just like yourself to rain

when hurricanes, we driving all of it. It rain out here, man.
People act like they have no idea how to navigate

State Miami Miami up seventeen seven, was fourteen nothing at
the end of the at halftime, Miami was dominating this game. Actually,
when Ohio State came up put the seven on the board,
I'm like Okay, here we go.

They're gonna come back.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
But right now, seventeen to seven, I can only imagine
what people are gonna say about Ryan Day if he
loses this game.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
You can only imagine. You already know what people are
gonna say with Ryan Day. And listen, Julian's saying, who
I don't think he's as great as everybody else thinks
he is. And that's not a Michigan Ohio State thing.
That's just me putting on the tape. When you're throwing
to the receivers that he has, you should be able
to put up some numbers and finish thirty ninth in
a Heisman voting. But tonight eighteen to twenty seven, two
forty seven, there's the pick that he threw, but he

hasn't thrown the touchdown just yet. They can't run the
ball of the Ohio State has forty three yards rushing
to Miami's ninety one. That front seven, that guy bang
Nfler ain't got a few NFL guys on that front seven,
especially that D line where Marty Crystobol has been able

These power blue bloods are starting to work. And see,

I gotta tell you this, This has surprised me. Not
so much that you know it was disrespecting Miami. I'm like, look,
Ohio State's too strong. They haven't given up more than

twenty points at any game this year. Though eventually flex
their muscle. They didn't have to play a first game.
You know, it's just too many factors were pointing in
Ohio State's favor. Here we are entering the fourth seventeen
to seven. What you think they can come back from
this or you think it's going to be too little
too late. Right now it might be a little too

little too late.

The end of the third, So the third buzzer just
went off, So we're going into the fourth quarter here.
Jeremiah Smith file for one twenty seven. He's got one
of fifty nine, but he's got no touchdowns. They have
to find big plays, not going to be able to
methodically move the ball. The only time they've been able
to really move the ball in office was right before
the half and then he ended up missing the missing
a field goal. Right, So, but that's when the games

were in their pre event style. You know, Ben, don't
bring the prackets when they're attacking them. They can't move
the ball. Now, Ohio State sitting in a good position.
Right now, they're about to touch the red zone second
to nine to start the fourth quarter. So you can
get three points out of this and make it a
one possession game.

What do you think nothing's going to happen to him, VJ.

He's not getting fired, he's still a great coach. He's
not going to the NFL. He's staying at Ohio State.
But unfortunately, there'll be people ragging on him. I'm not
gonna say for no reason, because this is a game
they should have won. Though i'd won from ten down
to eight and a half, I don't know what exactly
wasn't The kickoff might even have dropped down tight. But

there'll be people, you know, with the pitchforks out to
get him because of this game.

If he loses. I listen, Ryan Day is a really
really really really really really really really good football coach. Yes,
I just don't think he's a great, are excellent or
elite football coaching. There's plenty of games, plenty of game
time situations, plenty of coaching moves to support that. It's
not a hating comment, it's there's so much that we've

seen to where he's had better teams than teams that
have beaten him. Right, that comes down to coaching. When
you got better teams, once you add great coaching, excellent
elite coaching on top of that, you don't lose those games.
This is why saban as the run he had, This
is why Dabble had the run he has, This is
why Harball had the run he has. When you have

just better players in a better team and you're coached well,
you don't lose the type of games we've seen Ryan
Day lose. Is he gonna lose his job if they
lose this game? Absolutely not. He won the national championship
just last year. But at the end of the day,
it's such a panic era we live in in college
football now. Coaches are getting fired left and right. Will

he use his job this year? No, he goes out
and lose that Michigan game. Next year, loses the first
round playoff game next year, and then we can have
this conversation game. But he's said, I think he's a really, really,
really good coach. Man, I just I just never saw him. Like,
do you do you think he's a great coach, aren't you?
The numbers say he's a great coach. Yeah, the numbers do.

I mean, look look at his wins and losses. They're
absolutely fantastic.

lost to Michigan, you know, because he loses to that
one crustdown team, which by the way, is just another
opponent to me. I know, to you it means everything
in the world because you're a Michigan fan and Michigan
Ohio State think like that. But to me, it doesn't
make a difference if you lose to If you lose
to Michigan, it's like losing to Arizona or San Jose State.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
But I know where you cut No, no, no, I
know where.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
But that doesn't mean I want to take him from
being a great coach down to a good coach. I
know you have to win those type of games, by
the way, talking about being a great.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
To good coach.

It was fourth and two, they're down by ten points. Yeah,
they kick a field goal to get within seven. They
don't do it. They go forward on fourth and two.
They get the touchdown seventeen to fourteen, still thirteen minutes left,
a thirteen twenty eight left.

In this game. Jeremiah smith Man on a crossing route.
That guy's in an NFL receiver. Yeah, see if he
could keep the EV wouldn't have done that.

VJ. Highway would have kicked the field goal, I think
to get it within seven because you're two possessions down.

But you know what, though, I think that's also pressure
that he feels. So you're right, Oh, you're right. This
is why you go for and you see this is
what I'm talking about. Now. See if he wins this game,
that's see that's a great coaching move. Going forward on
fourth and two right there would not have bothered me
because your offense hasn't scored. You have seven points on
the board, so why would you just take a three
right here? No, I'm trusting in you guys, saying you

were just in New York at the Heisman Jeremiah Smith Tate.
You guys are first or second round like NFL draft
pick receivers. There's two nflers on the offensive line. You
guys can't go get me two yards. This is where Arnie, See,
this is where I love football. And this were like
the passion and you put all the bs aside and
you just go look young men or an NFL grown
men in the face and say, hey, go get me

this like this is what we do. Two yards twenty
four inches, go get this right now. Like I'm trusting
in you, because if I didn't trust you, i'd send
the kicker out right. I'm trusting in the talent. And
see that's so to me. That's a great coaching movie.
Just did and it pays off. But what do you do?
Get the ball to your best player, call the play
that gets it to the best player on the team.
And he did that and he scored a touchdown.

If he doesn't make it, though, what it was saying,

What I mean, though, like I said, when I saw
them going for it, I don't. I'm like, okay, cool,
I like this call because your offense has not been moving,
but you lose the game if you don't make it.
Right there pretty much tells me I'll throw this out there.
I think Ohio State defense gets a turnover in this quarter.
I just their defense is really really good. As you mentioned,
they've they haven't given up more than twenty points, right,

they led the nation in points against and and all
FBS schools, they were number one. They they turned the
ball over. They have a defensive style coordinator over there,
and they run defensive style schemes. Now, Carson Beck, who
I think can be a second or third round pick
next draft and should be. I think just because he
went to Miami, people forget the Georgia days like this

is he's an NFL quarterback. Man, I'd be first round,
but I take a flyer on second and late second
or early third round on Carson Beck. So he's NFL
ready too, right, so he's been able to navigate this
NFL style defense he's seeing. But I feel like Ohio
State has a turnover coming Arnie, and I think that's
can hopefully save the game. I tell you, I tell

you this, you know don't need right now, I'm praying
out they get a three and out right here, they're
gonna lose this game. They've gotta get first downs and
move the ball. If they go three and out right
here and have to punt, Ohio State's gonna come back
and win this game, right as we told you.

Miami seventeen fourteen overall, Ohio State thirteen twenty eight left
in the game. Miami going to get the ball still
plenty of time. The only reason I really want Miami
to lose is because Michael Irvin's screaming like a Foolah.

I love you know Michel screaming I do Come on,
he's coaching the team or something like that.

What he acts like is I won a national championship.
I'm the loudest mouth of this Alma mana with all
the greats like Ed Reid and Ray Lewis and come on, man,
the names that come out of this school. Who's the
main number one guy everybody remembers and who's the loudest
about the U Michael Irvin whenever he's on team. I

think he's one of the best former players on television
that they've ever been. Like, I can imagine Miami players
love them. Yeah, I can imagine.

I love Michael l uh Speaking about love. Did you
what did you love about that Michigan Texas game? First
of all, did you even watch it?
Speaker 3 (15:10):
For the reason? I asked that?

He asked that because plenty of tickets available for this one.
Wonder what one of a lot of people there? I
guess a lot of people didn't know there was actually
a game. A lot of players opted out, you know,
people like Gray who cares about this one was actually
a fun.

To be honest with you, it was closed until we
got to the fourth text.

In Michigan and yeah this is gave it up in
the fourth. But here, here's the thing in the game
like this, a game like this is a fan for
me and a Michigan man. It didn't bother. It's a
bowl game. Like you say, you got a lot of
guys out. What I'm looking for is body language. Who
really wants to be there? You know what I'm saying,
Like who who's just there? Or who's like no, no,
this is I'm here, I'm committed. This is what we do.
I wanted to see how they unleashed Brice Underwood, how

they played with him today. He threw the ball down
Phill a lot more. I wanted to definitely take a
look at some of the younger running back with Justice
Hayes and with Jordan Marshall being out, both those guys
and say their return. And also to the true freshman
marsh receiver, see how he's moving around. And then some
of the young defensive players that are being played today.
I'm just looking at, Okay, what what do we look
(16:13):
like going into the spring? What do we look like
going into the transfer portal? Now you see a couple
of guys being also to one of the top Utah
players as entering the portal, it's already reported that he's
already talking to coach willing Ham and will be joining
the Michigan Wolverine. So that adds to our defense there.
But a game like this, man, it's just fun to watch.
Art just had an up and down year. Why not?
Why why not want to see us kind of go out,

kind of go out you know on on a well know,
because he's taking a lot of criticism this year, and
some of it there and some of it unfair. This
was really a new team from last year and two
years ago, a team that got to.

The fourth He'd be the number one pick. If he
was in the draft right now, he'd be the number
one pick. You think so over my I think he'd
be the number one pick. I think he'll come back
to school for one more year and increases chances, maybe
be a Heisman hopeful, and also come back and be
the number one or the number two pick. I think
for what he was at the beginning of the year
two he is now has been absolutely remarkable. But real quick,

what did you think of the Michigan Hire of Wdingham?

What did you think about that? Look here, I'll say this.
I love this. I said it as simple. I'll say
the simple this And I told our one of our
great producers here, Ian Rowdy, who's in an editing room
right now. When I first walked in, would you have
thought three and a half weeks ago that Michigan would
be the last big time team of the forty one
that signed new coaches, would be the last team to

sign their coach and end up with the best pick
of everybody that was available. You don't think Penn State
would have took Willingham. You don't think Virginia Tech would
have took Willingham. You don't think Michigan State would have
took Willingham. You don't think LSU even LSU would have
had to sit and talk. Okay, do we want Lane
with all this extra stuff that comes with him, or
(17:54):
do we want a guy who is a man like.
He's a man's man and honest guy. And Michigan needed
this after what just happened with coach Charon Moore. Listen,
I'm praying for everybody involved. I wasn't there. I don't
know the details. All I know is what's reported. And
they had to nail this. Now you got a guy,
(18:15):
a clean guy, who could come in, who can restore
the image, restore the credibility. That would have taken probably
years if we'd have hired from within, clean house a
little bit, bringing five new coaches with him, gonna bring
some players with him. I thought Michigan nailed this, and
the story came out. They were talking to him weeks
(18:36):
and weeks and weeks ago, because remember when he stepped
down from Utah, he said, this is not a retirement.
Was his exact words, right, Yeah, he was. They were
why and the the boor stuff, all that was smoke screens, brother,
all that, especially once he beat Oklahoma. Once I was
going to beat Oklahoma, the Boar's name was gone. The
Boar's name was gone. They they've been they'd been quietly
(18:59):
from every thing I've been told in her they had
already been quietly talking to him. That's why he called
it and not a retirement. Because remember the story is
Michigan knew about all this. We found out on a Friday,
But they say Michigan knew about this week's before that.
It was putting their investigation together so they can fire
with calls and have all the evidence presented that they needed.

punting on going out. Did you see the mess that
was down there at Times Square? They had to move
the barriers back because people were pushing and they were
squishing people there, you know, like in a soccer game
in Europe or something like that, and they had to

It was getting crazy already down there at Times Square.
So people said, hey, I'm punting on this sitting at

like going into the spring? What do we look like
going into the transfer portal? Now you see a couple
of guys being also to one of the top Utah
players as entering the portal, it's already reported that he's
already talking to coach willing Ham and will be joining
the Michigan Wolverine. So that adds to our defense there.
But a game like this, man, it's just fun to watch.

The Burden
The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three).
