The final week of the season of Major League Baseball.
I'm a nervous wreck. Mets and the Cubs are seven
to seven, bottom of the seventh and if the Mets win,
they take over the final wild card And I'm sitting
here going what kind of deal with the devil? Did
the Guardians make twelve and a half games. They were
(01:12):
out about a month or so ago, and now they're
tied with the Tigers. Like, that's gonna be one hell
of a bill when it comes to Mike Harmon, I
tell you what the guardians gave him, But it's gonna
be one hell of a bill.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
How do you get such a faustian deal your own
damn self, that's what you're asking right now? Seven seven's
all over. The plays bottom of seven two on two out.
Manager will make a pitching change, so we go to
the commercial break as you have to sweat it out
a little bit longer. But a pretty wild game, and yeah,
I mean the wild circumstances coming down to this final week.
(01:43):
We've got a dead heat in the al MVP betting
odds coming into tonight's game. We've got all these playoff juxtaposition.
We've got Schoolbles supposed to be the guy, gonna be
the stopper, Gonna build a statue to him outside. It's
gonna be of him hiking a ball like he's well
(02:04):
juggling or something like that, or or a long schnapper
on one of those many blocked field goals from Sunday's
NFL action. Either way, just a wild final week ahead
for us here in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Yeah, I mean the Tigers may never win again. I
mean really, that's that's kind of what this is. They
may never win again. Won their last game I mean forever,
but forever they maybe done.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Like if the Guardian used the documentary they really need, Hey,
you go find who's the ambissary of the devil that
they can't that the Guardians came up and made the.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Twelve and a half games. Not only the Guardians making
this up, but now the Tigers can't win. I mean
this this is go for the Gusto man, go for
the go for the Gusto.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Miracle mats of nineteen sixty nine on steroids.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I read, I read. I read a book not too
long ago. Was it? The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue?
What v Schwap really good? Right?
Speaker 4 (02:56):
You know?
Speaker 1 (02:56):
I read all the time because I'm I'm that guy.
And the book was a she meets a couple of
characters over the course of her life that made these
Faustian bargains with the devil, and they both made the
bargains for you know, some kind of great life. And
the first guy made it for eternity, right, like he
met the devil, whoever it was, and he meant, yeah,
(03:16):
I want this kind of life in this this for eternity,
and the devil granted it to him, whoever it was.
And then the other guys. She meets how long did
you get? And he goes three years? Three years? How
do you only get three years? You gave him your
soul for eternal damnation and you're only getting three years
out of it. So like, go big if you're the Guardians, Man,
go big, go big, get everything. Tigers never win again,
(03:38):
schoobl is no longer, He's never gonna win again. Oh,
just keep going, man, go all the way.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Well, but that's just it. You really need to ask
for the world. And then, as we know, you're gonna
fall just short of something, so chaos to come into playoffs.
I guess this is what we're getting ready for here.
If if history is to be believed, right, of all
these things, you get right to the precipice of greatness,
you're world and global universal adoration, and then it all
(04:05):
goes asunder. So yeah, I mean, you can already write
this book. You just need the last chapter.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Man, And again Mets and Cubs are tied seven seven
p crow armstrung up with two on and two out
in the seventh. Now I've all the thing is as
nervous as I am. I've already come to grips that
the metsage is gonna take this all the way down
to the last day, just to drag all of the
really all the really bad. How could they possibly blow
this wild card lead in the most painful fashion possible.
(04:33):
And it's gonna take it down to the final day
of the regular season. And it's gonna take it down
to Sunday against the Marlins, who were terrible, but get
somehow they played the Mets every game they have one
hundred wins. So like like it's gonna all go come
all the way down. I would say, hey, if you're
gonna blow it, do it the next couple of days, right,
Please do it the next couple of days. Doesn't don't
make me go through all this anguish and take years
off my life with worrying about stuff the next few
(04:55):
days only to gack it away on a Sunday. Do
it early. If you're gonna do it, well, didn't do
it there.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Crow Armstrong goes down on strikes to end the threat
in the seventh, we'll go to the eighth tide seven
to seven.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Once at once a met, right, once met.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
When you're a met, you're always yeah, well you talk
about a tail of two halves, man. One of the
more curious things ever, Right, Normally bad ball swinging guys
they have their come up and so it just doesn't
happen for a full half of the season. But the
law of averages are what they are for Pete Crow Armstrong.
(05:30):
The highlight of this game was John mulaney Sittingdacious College
Prep Chicago Alum.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah it was not. I really would rather him if
he could have re enacted his speech from the Christmas
Bear from the Bear like that would have been better
than the is he still he's still holding the fork?
Uh huh, okay, thank you, yes, we are so again
before updated on this game seven to seven Mets Cubs
right National Game TBS. This is it going to the
top of the eighth inning. Meanwhile, hey, big news in
(06:01):
the NFL. I mean you knew it if you listen
to us well over a month ago. It is now official.
The Giants are benching Russell Wilson Jackson Dart will start instead.
And oh, by the way, Hey, no soft landing. You're
gonna go up against one of the top three defenses
of the NFL. You're gonna get the red hot La Chargers.
Good luck, Jackson Dart. Look, this is something we told
(06:25):
you a month ago. When Dart had the big game
in the preseason against the Jets, you could just tell
this is the way the world is going with the Giants, right,
It's all Jackson Dart and no momentum of any kind
for Russell Wilson once they traded for Dart, and Dart
came in and showed that over the course of his
(06:46):
mini camps and in the summer that the moment wasn't
too big for him. And Dart was really good along
the way, checked every box, He never really struggled. He
threw the ball really well. You knew it was just
a matter of time. I mean I knew the middle
last month because I know New York and I know that,
and watching Chris collins Worth on Sunday night, going, yeah,
you kind of want to start Dart, but you want
to give them a soft landing maybe middle of the season.
(07:08):
I'm like, dude, do I need to be in that
booth instead of you? Because i'd have said, yeah, you
know what, Like I've been telling you since the middle
of August, this change is going to be happening by
October first. Turns out my bull predictions. I had a week.
I had a week to sit back and go, yeah,
I got a week for this thing because it's happening now,
instead of I mean it was. This was just the
way things were with the Giants. They Russell Wilson had
(07:31):
no cachet and once she's once it was the Wilson
Dart tandem over the summer. You knew it was going
to be Jackson Dart, right, Brian Dable and Joe Shane
want to save their jobs. We've talked about this everything
you heard today. Look, that's why we say ahead of
the curve, because we've told you this a month ago.
They want to save their jobs. They want to be
the ones to say, hey, wait a minute, we're the
(07:51):
ones that can coach the hell out of this guy.
We're the ones that take you the next you know,
out of the Daniel Jones era and out of whatever
era this is, into the Jackson Dart era. Hey we
you know, we we can do that. So you knew
this was just a matter of time right now to
take this in a in a in a you know,
to go forward on this. Myke car MIxS, you know,
like say ahead of the curve, right, that's it. Yeah.
So now, Russell Wilson, what did we say when this
(08:13):
was gonna happen? Wilson is not going to spend the
rest of the season and potentially his last in the
NFL sitting on the sidelines holding a clipboard or more
than likely with the big Parka on in this in
the winter months where he's just holding him said, he's
got his helmet on and he's just sitting there with
the big parka, you know, with his arms around he
wrapped around each other, just watching the game happen. Not
(08:34):
gonna happen, right, Not gonna happen. So by the time
the trade deadline gets here, Russell Wilson's gonna be on
a new team. That's another reason why they made this
move now, so they can see that as long as
as as Jackson Dart is good, they will make the
move in trade. Russell Wilson, He's not gonna finish this
year backing up sitting on the bench. That's not who
(08:54):
he is, right, That's not dangerous. He's gonna say, get
me somewhere where I can jump in and maybe help
a team that needs a quarterback, because everybody needs quarterbacks,
whether it's injury or ineffect us. We's already had four
or five quarterback change the first three weeks of the
season because of injury, So that's going to happen. And
it also makes sense now if you believe that and
(09:15):
you say, okay, wait a minute, this makes sense as
to how Jameis Winston is still on that team because
when you trade Russell Wilson, okay, you're looking for a
backup of some kind that can come in just in
case he has to. If Jackson Dart shows, hey, wait
a minute, I need some more time, you sit him
down for a bid, put him in bubble wrap. The
rams at that with Jared Goff beginning of his career.
(09:35):
So it makes sense this is why Jameis Winston is
still there because then he would be that break glass
in case emergency quarterback that takes over. So yeah, so
Jackson Dart he's gonna start, but I'm telling you Wilson's
gone by the deadline, and you realize this is why
Jameis Winston is still on the team. I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
I really hope that teams come looking for Jamis instead.
But uh, just because I think it's better theater. Yeah,
we don't want that guy. No, no, no, we want the
other guy in the room. He's funnier. Uh and uh
you know he'll he'll wing it around just like Russwell.
I mean, whether it's Cincinnati or one of these other teams. Uh,
that's already faced a huge loss. Yeah, I mean there's
(10:13):
certainly a marketplace, right we see that the running back position,
right we when we're we're talking about guys that are
that are back off injury and haven't been used yet.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
You know the old phrase that I've used from my
mom's forever, the old save it for good. It seems
like we've got a little bit of that, uh going
on with some of the guys being stashed and coming back.
But but in this it was inevitable. Just again, thought
thought it was gonna be New Orleans. But it's not
like that's really that's the only good game on the schedule.
(10:47):
Otherwise they've got another five or six in a row
thereafter that are just miserable potential points for for Jackson Dart,
but you got to see what he's got. You got
to test the metal. Uh. And you certainly needed a
different change in the room to try to get at
Malik Neighbors more consistently involved in more opportunities. Uh. We'll
see more of Scatabo of course with Tracy's injury. Uh,
(11:09):
and probably more Devin Singletary because he's a good blocker
and receiver uh in the backfield. So we'll we'll see
that a little bit. But for for Shane and Dable. Yeah, yeah,
you had to pull the pin. You got to see
what you have, try to convince the bosses that you
get to keep your job.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
And yeah, eventually Russell Russell Wilson will be somewhere else.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
There's there's no question about it. And you start to
wonder if that's been the plan the last couple of months.
Where Okay, we're getting into the summer. We have these
three quarterbacks, right, We're not sure what we have, right.
We we signed Russell Wilson, we signed Jamis Winston. We
have to wait till the draft they get Jackson Dart. Okay,
we have these three guys, and I'm sure the thought was, Okay,
what do we do here? Do we let Jamis go?
(11:51):
Do we trade him? What we know? What do we do? Jackson?
Dart's coming along well, And I'm wondering if if once
the summer hit and the Giants realize that, hey, dark,
it's gonna be in here sooner rather than later, right,
we don't have to sit here and wait for him
to be ready, like he's gonna be ready the first month.
Right again, we told you, and I wonder if that's
been the plan. And they've actually talked to Russell Wilson
about this, saying, hey, if this happens, we're gonna keep
(12:13):
all three of these guys. We're gonna keep all three
of you. We will move you at the deadline to
a team. We will move you at the deadline. And
that's been the plan that we've had since Dart showed
that it's gonna be sooner rather than later. And I'm
sure all three of these guys have been on the
same pages. Look, you haven't heard anything. Jameis Winston hasn't
been mad about stuff. Jamis wins Why am I here
as a third guy? You haven't heard that yet? It
(12:34):
was one of the three amigos, right, Yeah, nothing from
Russell Wilson about all this time, it's my job, it's X,
Y and Z. Everybody seems to be on the same page.
And it makes sense that if once the middle of this,
once the beginning of the summer hit, and there were
three quarterbacks, this is why we're keeping all three right,
because that makes too much sense for this to not
have been the plan going on the better part of
(12:56):
five or six weeks. Now.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Well, yeah, have two guys in the room that have
just vastly hy They've experienced everything right. Russ had all
the great success, the super Bowl, the near miss, all
of that, some big numbers, and he's obviously learned a lot.
For Jamis, you've had the struggles, the interceptions that you
(13:17):
name it, and bouncing around to where Jackson Dart can
glean so much information from both of these guys. They've
started and played so many snaps. To have them around
the room as long as they have can only be
to his benefit. And now you get the opportunity. I
guess they're helped in some way that you don't have
a fully deployed Chargers defense with Khalil mack out. But
(13:41):
still it's it'll be a very interesting game to watch
and see how they run that offense.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
This weekend exit out about a Fresca exit swallowing dump
sad we told top of a month ago. Now we'll

Sports Radio on YouTube and subscribe. Now. Now I'm told
we have big baseball breaking news. Steve de Sega ready
for this. But for big should I just do it?
I think I should just do it. I just do
the breaking news. Francisco Alvarez a two run jack in
the top of the eighth. Mets lead the Cubs nine
to seven, bringing the bringing him back. How many times
(14:34):
city that he was done with them for the year.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
They sucktin God?
Speaker 1 (14:42):
All right, at least that was so good. You could
be Sophia Copla. How about that you be the worst
actor in the entire movie. You'll be Sophia.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
I have no relatives in this game. I can't get in.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Steve if you have stats the exit velocity on the
Alvarez home run, do you have any what? What do
you have?
Speaker 5 (14:58):
It did travel four hundred and three feet at Wrigley Field. Wow,
But it's really that's pretty good. It's a wriggly Field game.
And it's not over. Yes, now, Mets were down with
David Peterson on the mound five to one in the second.
They got a five run fifth even at six six.
It's now nine to seven Mets in the top of
the eighth. Not over. We had people off the air
(15:19):
discussing these playoff possible matchups. Nobody wanted to play three
games at Wrigley Field next week.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Just for the record, I don't ever want to play
three games at Wrigley Field. I don't I don't care.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
I don't care when it is, especially with what they've
done to that neighborhood trust.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Anymore. Oh, it's just terrible.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
The Wildcard series, the best of three they each begin
next Tuesday, but all the games are at the better
seeded team.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Now you mentioned David Peterson. This is this is a
great stat from the great statistician Jason Smith. David Peterson's
last ten starts. Okay, like I can't believe the guy
is They're still thrown him out every fifth day. His
last ten starts since August first, forty seven innings pitched,
fifty six hits, forty one earned runs. Like, how was
(16:05):
he still taking his turn every fifth day? Because he's
a mat I don't understand. I have nothing else. This
guy was on the All Star team.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
But Dame Roberts was getting the bullpen games going throughout
each round. It's gonna be three bullpen games next week.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Got the Mets, hey, because he hasn't gone to anybody
and said, you know what, my shoulder hurts, my back hurts, whatever,
you'd be okay, you're feeling all right?
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Yeah, I'm great, give me the ball, you man, I'll
tell you all right. Well, thank you, Steve.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
By the way, the Padres Padres have already home er
twice six nothing in the second inning against the Brewers.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Is David Peterson pitching in that game too?
Speaker 5 (16:41):
Although yeah, I think the Brewers would take him at
this point. They got games to kill for the rest
of the week.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Oh sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, why not? Yes, Hey, Mike
Caldbell could come in and pitch all up by Gara. Sure,
Oh yeah, yea, I.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Think I'm all nineteen eighty two Brewers. Very good.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Thank you, Steve, Oh, Pete Pukevich still you know, Hey,
we're sure no, no, no, who is he hit to? Yeah? Heynyword?
Isn't he a convicted felon? I don't have it? Well?
He ought to be so Again, Big night in baseball,
Big day in football. Coming up next, we have a
play of the day that everyone is going to love,
(17:17):
a huge football story, and we pay homage to something
we've talked about for the better part of a decade
plus and we'll continue to talk about for the better
part of the next decade plus. That's coming up next
right here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

Fox Sports Radio, the Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. This isn't just a game, It's a
once in a generation event. The Harlem Globetrotters one hundred
Year Tour. Come be part of a legacy that never stops.
Be there when history is made. The Harlem Globetrotters wond
Year Tour. Get your tickets today at Harlem Globetrotters dot com.
That is at Harlem Globetrotters dot com. Well, it's kind
(19:08):
of crazy that the play of the day runs into
a big story out of football. But just a day
after we celebrated this seventeenth anniversary of the famous Mike
Gundy I'm a man, I'm forty rant, Oklahoma State has
fired Mike Gundhy as head coach, effective immediately. Three and
(19:32):
nine last year in the Big Twelve, a one and
two start this year. They lost to Tulsa last weekend,
which was the final straw for Oklahoma State. And it
was weird because the school let Mike Gundy do his
weekly press conference a day ago. It was just really
really awkward, man, and you talked.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
About how much time he had left on his contract,
and also yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
I mean, look, and here's the thing for you, because
you know what the play of the day is going
to be. But oh yeah, but the whole thing is like,
I really need to hear that something crazy happened behind
closed doors, because this just feels like they did Gundhy
all wrong. Like this is not a guy who was
there for four or five years, went to a couple
of bowl games and struggled. This guy put the program
(20:13):
back on the map in the in the early two thousands.
The guy's been there for twenty years, man. He made
the team very good to sometimes elite. They had they
this is a team that went to what a Bowlgate
eighteen years in a row. Yes, a tough last couple
of years. And I'm not saying it was wrong to say, hey,
after this year, we need to move on because maybe
you know, we need we need some new energy. And
(20:34):
I understand it, but this guy's been there two decades, man,
and it feels like they they just did him all wrong.
From the we're letting him go now to letting him
do his final press conference making him look bad and
talk about his contract and and and everything that goes
along with it. I mean, this is I mean, I
feel like, Oho, what are you doing? Man? Like I
understand that the need we want to move on, but
(20:55):
this guy's more than just hey, he's been here for
five years, you know, and and and well, don't worry someone,
the new coach will rent his house when he comes in.
Like this guy is synonymous with the school. Like you say,
Oklahoma State football. Two names come to mind, Barry Sanders
and Mike Gundy. Right, that's it. Two names, Barry Sanders,
Myke Gunny. That's Oklahoma State football. Right, that's it. And
so to see this, I feel like, wow, man, they
(21:17):
really did the guy wrong. He won ten games, like
like seven or eight times with with Oklahoma State, and
this is how he gets done here.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
At the end, Well, I think some of it, you know,
going back to the thing with the Oregon about how
much money they spend and all the improvements and everything
they've got rolling that you know, hey, we're gonna get
get our clocks cleaned, probably didn't help because now you're
embarrassing your boosters and people that support the programs, like,
all right, we're giving you a lot of stuff, and
(21:46):
you're telling us that you know, it's a pittance, which
on a relative basis it may very well be. I mean,
check the books, those that you can find, and then
the second set of books. You know that it's the
anniversary of the release of Shawshank. You got to have
a second set of books around, so you got all
that going on. But it's just the idea that you've
had all his success that it wouldn't be able to
(22:09):
play out for the rest of the year no matter
how bad it got, or were you risking to your
mind losing whatever. Recruits were already on the books as
commit committing. And this is weird, right because the last
couple of weeks we're seeing a lot of movement in
the coach in Karausel already and we're not even out
of September.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yeah, but you could say this is it. You could say, hey,
Mike Gun, you're gonna let you announce this is your
last year. Like you can do that and still move on.
You can still move on and talk to recruits. This
is what's that because whether you fire the guy or
let him stay at the end of the year, the
recruits are going to think about it, Do I want
to flip? Do I not? If you have a succession
plan in place, or he's gonna get to finish this season,
like you know that. That's something where I'm like, I
(22:50):
think the guy's earned the right for that, right I
think he has. I think he's earned the right to
be able to say, hey, this year is not going clearly.
You know it doesn't. It doesn't push any timeline up,
Like have an interim coach in there now. Okay, so
you have an interim coaching now, but are you gonna
make a change at the end of the season. You'd
be making a change anyway with Mike Gundhy. At least
now you have more of a better transition. You can
(23:10):
continue to talk to the recruits more like. It's not
perfect in any way, and like you know, sometimes I
feel like, okay, if you're one in three, one and
two in the seasons getting away mulready, you don't have
the talent. I mean you look at what the guy's done,
and it's like it's not all of a sudden he's
become a horrible coach. It's okay, well things are happening
now and in in college football and with and I.
(23:31):
Whatever it is, whether it's nil, whether it's transfer, portal, yeah, okay,
you need to do something else. But man, I mean,
like I said, this guy, you could have found a
way to do it with more class, or you know,
you could have said, hey, Mike Gundy's gonna coach his
final game this weekend. Right, this is gonna be the
final game of Mike Gundy, Right, A one more, one
more home game he's gonna get. You could have found
a classier way to do it than just Hey, yeah,
(23:53):
everything is as it is and I'm I'm giving my
weekly press conference. I'm talking about my contract next day.
Oh yeah, no, You're gone, Like, come on, man, like
you there's there's so many different ways you could have
found a way to do this better.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Well, that's the other side of, you know, being defiant
of Hey, I've got this much time left on my deal,
So I mean, what are you gonna do?
Speaker 2 (24:10):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Probably isn't the smartest way to go about it either, Right,
He's a guy that hasn't held his tongue through the years.
And I'm not even getting into, you know, anybody that
wants to go down which side of the aisle he
espouses and whatever and whatever those beliefs. Just in terms
of dealing and administrating the football program, He's had plenty
(24:32):
of flare ups, shall we say, and trash talking moments
throughout the years. Maybe the the talking about what where
the nil is? Because obviously it's a changing face of
college sports, and we've talked about it a lot for
both football and basketball purposes of you know, with some
of these coaches, they flat out to I don't want
any part of it. And it's fine. You can find
(24:54):
someone else to do that part. You generally can hire
a lot of folks. Doesn't mean you're not gonna still
have to sit down with your pri recruits, right, the
biggest players on either side of the ball that are
going to rake in the most money, command the most things,
and you know, different amenities that you'll have to negotiate.
(25:15):
They have to sit with the parents and their agents
and managers and whatever else. And I get it, you
don't want to do that. Guess what, as a college coach,
you're already doing that and going to a bunch of
you know, rubber chicken dinners every year and glad handing
people you don't want to be in the same room
with anyway. That's just the nature of the beast, right,
There's a lot on your plate that you don't have
(25:35):
to do. And yes, this is an extension of it,
but complaining about that, talking about you know, responding to
questions about the start of the season, coming off a
rough twenty twenty four with I don't know, I got
three and a half years left, probably doesn't sit very
well with a lot of the folks that are, you know,
running the show here, even if you are a former quarterback,
(25:56):
even if you've been around the program, what is it
thirty five years or something like that, of his life,
all of that to say, yeah, I mean, could you
have been nice? He could have played nice too, That's
just not been his personality. And you know what got
them a lot of double digit win seasons and a
lot of glory through the years.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
So this of course brings us to the Play of
the day. The Play of the Day has brought to
you by ti iraq dot com for over forty years.
Tirerack's been uping customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Shipped fast and free, backed
by free Road, has a protection with convenient installation options
like mobile tire installation. Tire rack dot com is the
way tire buying should be. Yes, it was seventeen years
(26:37):
ago yesterday that a little upset over some questions some
reporters talking to his players and asking them things that
Mike Gundy would really rather have not reporters talked to
his players about He gave us this rant for the
ages and it is our play of the day.
Speaker 7 (26:54):
That's why I don't read the newspaper because it's scarbage
and the editor that let it come out it's garbage
attacking an amateur athlete for doing everything right, and then
you want to write articles about guys that don't do
things right and downgrade.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Him the ones that do make plays.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 7 (27:16):
Where are we at in society today? Come after me.
I'm a man, I'm forty, I'm not a kid. Write
something about.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
Me or our coaches who Mike Gundhy the I'm a man,
I'm for it. You know, you forget about the beginning
of That's why I don't read the newspaper anymore.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
It's garbage. Well I forgot about that, But I mean
this takes us all with this, we're going all the
way back to two thousand and seven. That's how long
that has lived in our published public consciousness. And that's
the the unfortunate thing for him, with as decorated a
career as he had. And you named a couple of
the stats, right, double digit win seasons, all those Bowl Games,
(27:58):
everything else.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
It's that far speech from all those years ago that
trumps all of it. Man, you want a great story
about this, right, So maybe about a month after this happens, right,
maybe a month after this happens. This is when I'm
at ESPN and I'm doing all night and I was
filling in during the day, maybe a Dan Patrick. I
forget what day it was, but we're filling it and
(28:20):
Mike Gundy was coming on the show as a guest.
So I'm talking to my producer. We're getting ready to
go over questions from Mike Gundy. Like, okay, I said,
I got to ask him about the the A'm a man,
I know it's a month ago, but like it's a
you know, it's a big deal. Like yeah, you know,
we'll find a way to bring it up, you know,
find a way to bring it up where you know,
doesn't sound like you're attacking him, you know whatever it was.
(28:42):
So I'm like, okay, great, because that's the thing is
what people forget, you know, what what the what not?
What people forget. But what's not appreciated sometimes is that
when you do an interview with an athlete and you
ask them, you know, they know it's going to be
an uncomfortable question. The athlete or the coach will shut
down if they think it's not going to be an
enjoyable experience. Right, So you want to be able to say,
we want to talk about this, but I want you
(29:03):
to be able to say whatever you want to make
about it. So I just I said, okay, I'm just
going to bring it up and see what he says.
And they said all right. I said okay. I said, Mike,
you know Bob coming off the win this week, blah blah.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
Go.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
So it's been a month since you told everyone you
were a man and you were forty. I said, what's
the last month been like for you? And I got
my fingers crossed. I'm like, what's he going to And again,
this is when it was just a thing that was said, like,
it didn't become this famous thing now. And he said,
I'll never forgear this, Jason. I can't tell you the
attention that I've gotten over that talking to our recruits.
(29:37):
The recruits are calling our coach is going, I can't
believe coach said that, and he and he goes, I
can't tell you how this has turned into a positive
thing for me and us here because all of a
sudden it's brought up. Did the recruits want everybody wants
to talk to me about it? They want to talk
to our coaches about it? And what happened to make
this come up? And X Y and Z and I
(29:57):
could tell that he was being honest about it. This
wasn't well, it's a big positive thing, you know, it's
a big positive thing. Absolutely, I'm not gonna talk like
he went into detail about how this brought him into
a new stratosphere where so many recruits now knew more
about him and knew more about and wanted to know
about the program, wanted what was going on the interest
level in Oklahoma state. And I was stunned about that.
(30:19):
I'm like, Okay, he's gonna give me a perfunctory answer,
that's just you know, X Y and Z, dot the
you know dot the i's across the t's. But you
could tell he's like, yeah, I didn't know it was
gonna blow up like this, right, Hey, the old no
publicity is bad publicity, right, Because I think he seemed
really surprised that this was how it went for him,
and that was not only just the immediate aftermath but
(30:41):
I don't think it hurt recruiting the rest of the
time for him. Nine wins, eleven wins, twelve wins, ten wins,
seven wins, ten wins, ten wins, ten wins. Pretty sure
he recruited pretty well over the next ten years after
that happened.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Well, I mean, everybody's gonna remember that that's gonna be
the thing that might get you in front of some
some recruits from their parents and whatever else, that this
guy's gonna have my kids back, right, I mean that
goes a long way, and getting into past that first
initial mailing and phone call or the assistant coach that
goes out to scout a player. All of a sudden,
(31:15):
it's hey, that's the guy that lost his mind on
reported I don't read your newspapers because it's that's carbage, right,
I mean, that's the guy I'm probably feeling a little
more comfortable sending my kid to.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
He's gonna look out for him. I just can't get
it was so awesome to hear him tell that story.
Although I had gone the other way on you, it
could have been. And I'm strong. I'm Coustry strong, I'm
from Oklahoma State. I'm taking you out, Are you forty?
I'll kick your ass. Smith, Yeah, yeah, come on up,
beat you up, and Dad Patrick and all those guys.
I'll show up and kick.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Your ass And I'm gonna have a mullet later on
in life too. You just watch and see how that goes.
That's the other thing. I mean, come on, is there
any better? No coaches had a better hair?
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Do we? That bald we've had? Yeah, we've had some
buzz cuts. I mean that that is some lettuce man.
I'll tell you it was. It was an awesome experience.
But then again, there's awesome and then there's what we
just saw at Wrigley Field. Steve de Seger has the
latest on what's gone down in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 5 (32:16):
STEVEO appreciated hearing that cut again from Gundy because in
back to back sentence he mentioned reading a newspaper and
amateur athletes to college football.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Yeah, yeah, it's that's how you know.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
It's old another planet.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
These are amateur athletes. These guys aren't doing this for
a living. Amateur apo.
Speaker 5 (32:37):
So, Oklahoma State did fire coach Mike Gundhy today and
Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mattier will have surgery for a
broken hand and yes New York Giants rookie QB Jackson
Dart will start this week. Well, it's a w for
the Mets and what a wild game at Wrigley Field tonight.
New York was down five to one in the second.
They win at nine to seven over the Cubs, who
(32:59):
have lost five in a row. Met's got a two
run homer from Francisco Alvarez in the top of the
eighth inning. That was the difference. Save number twenty seven
for this guy named Diez, who they used for two
innings five strikeouts.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Now walks.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
Man, other teams would love to have Edwin Diaz as
a closer.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
I'll just say'd like it to be able to pitch
every inning out of the bullpen, every inning out of
he may be the starter.
Speaker 5 (33:24):
Shortly at Philadelphia they have resumed after a rain delay.
Top of the ten. Phillies and Marlins tied three to three.
Kyle Schwarber an early home run is fifty fourth. The
Reds had won five in a row. They lost at
home four two to Pittsburgh, which is great news for
the Mets, who now lead the Reds by one game
for the final NL Wildcard spot. Cleveland is the story.
(33:44):
They're tied for first with the Tigers in the AL Central.
The regular season ends this Sunday. Cleveland was down by
fifteen and a half games in the standings in early July.
This is the biggest comeback ever. Cleveland beats Detroit head
to head five to two to start a series tonight.
Tigers have lost seven in a row. They've lost ten
of their last eleven games. Braves won their tenth in
(34:07):
a row. Baltimore shutout Tampa Bay. Boston won at Toronto
four to one. The Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot
on Sunday, but as the first place team in the
AL East, their lead is down to one over the Yankees.
Yanks got two runs in the bottom of the ninth
edge the White Sox three to two. The Yankees clinch
a playoff berth the White Sox with loss number ninety
(34:27):
nine of the season in progress. The Rockies are leading
at Seattle on nothing in the bottom of the fourth.
Houston has tied one to one at the A's bottom
of the second, padres with two early homers, up six
nothing on Milwaukee. In the top of the fourth, pitchers
show Hey o Tani and the Dodgers lead one nothing
at Arizona. Top of the fifth Giants have taken the
(34:48):
lead on Saint Louis foro to three in the bottom
of the third inning. And what a comeback. In the
WNBA Semifinals. Tonight, Phoenix in overtime wins at Minnesota to
tie this at a game apiece. Phoenix was down twenty
mid third quarter and the New York Liberty fired coach
Sandy Brondello.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O. The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. So now the
big story of the night oufl the Mets now hold
the final wildcard spot with five games left to play.
Coming up next, how about this, You're not gonna believe
the NFL team I'm gonna tell you should trade for
a quarterback. Maybe it is Cleveland that's next, right here,
(35:25):
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

makes complete and total sense. Insanity is the order of
(36:06):
the day when it comes to this show. Come on,
you know sometimes I you know, I like to say
and people like to say the fact that a broken
clock is right twice a day. I said, hey, a
few minutes ago, I said, hey, wait till I tell
you what team should trade for a quarterback, And Alex
Tischer played his favorite drop that he plays all the time. Clear,
all right, turns out this is one of those broken
(36:28):
clock com Hey, this one's for you. Well well, yes, okay,
Well the quarterback is broken. A quarterback position is really broken.
He's talking more about the Browns. I mean, we're going
to talk to you later. I mean, that's a.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
Separate conversation we do really about your buddy. The Browns
defense is lights out.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Okay. This is two of the three weeks where they
shut down Jordan Love and the Packers looked like they
were the best team in the NFL the first couple
of they were gonna go undefeated, and they shut down
Joe Burry the first week. Now, second week they lost
to Baltimore. Okay, they didn't play that well, but Baltimore
the game got away from them. But Cleveland gave the
ball away.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
Yeah, a couple of times in plus territory, like they
gave it game away.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
They have no offense. They have absolutely not Joe Flacco's
quarterback rating this season so far as sixty five, okay,
seventy five, sixty five, fifty five, he's done right. They
have absolutely no offense. Don't give away a season you
can compete. It is a bad AFC. It is a
weak AFC North. You are looking at at a Cincinnati
(37:34):
Bengals team without Joe Burrow for probably the rest of
the season. The Ravens defense is absolutely putrid. And the
Steelers are at the Steelers that you think they are right,
They're struggling. They're gonna struggle offensively. Be bold, you trade
for a quarterback and all of a sudden you can
win some games and be in the wildcard, maybe even
be in the division race. Because all of a sudden,
(37:55):
things have changed, Like the defense has played so well,
and we knew they were gonna have a good defense.
I didn't think it would be this good through three games,
because you're talking about three superstar quarterbacks and two out
of three games and two and a half times they
came in and said, yeah, we got you, we got you.
If you had any kind of offense, you would be
two and one right now, you'd be at the top,
and you'd be the biggest success story. You just make
(38:16):
it move. There's gonna be guys out there. There's gonna
be guys out there could put points on the board,
give you some offense. Make a move for a quarterback.
Trade There's gonna be guys available. Make that trade. Bring
someone in that can give you some kind of offense.
I can't believe I'm saying this Brown your trade for
a quarterback. But I thought Dion said that door forgets
your door.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Because Philadelphia and Baltimore, I mean, what the hell am
I gonna do there?
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Learn I'm okay, I'm ok against me. They're gonna start
five quarterbacks. I'm okay going against that. If they could
get a quarterback, I get it. Yes, Shador and Dylan Gabe.
But yeah, no, go get somebody that can win the
games right now, because you're good enough to win games
right now and be in it in the thick of
that division.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
I did that new information. I mean, you got a pivot.
I mean, and there's opportunity here. A lot of quarterbacks
have gone down to injury. Joe Flacco, as we've clearly seen,
is not elite. Although they should have won that Week
one game. Man the hell, they should have won last week.
They should have won Week one again, they should have
been two and one.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
We'd be saying Browns are the best story in the NFL.
They don't have anything, and look at look where they are,
and look where they are.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
They got Miles Garrett yelling and have brought Jordan run
all of that Baltimore's defense. Eventually you'll get back van
Noy and maybe you get a little bit healthier Alexander
and Vincent and you know, on the offensive side for Vincent.
But yeah, I like the cut of your jib. Go
(39:42):
be bold, Go see what the marketplace is. Go get
Russell Wilson.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
You only doing no I've met, Get a quarterback, I said,
get a quarter Oh, I saw, Is that too soon?
Speaker 3 (39:51):
I'm sorry, but but you spoke into a nebulous term
of get a quarterback. I'm trying to give you a
name that will be available for the You can bring
back Jamis.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Uh no, Hey, you know what you could trade for Tua.
I'm sure. I'm sure they'll be ready to attack and
trade right there. You can bring sick. That's a factory.
If said is going to a factory, and that's another
big story out of the NFL. Next Fox
