Speaker 2 (00:23):
If you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Oh that is us. Good evening, everybody.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
VJ Husky ARNI span you're in for the guys tonight,
Jason Smith and his best friend Mike Harmon right here
on Fox Sports Radio. One more hour until we start
breaking into New Year here on the East Coast. Oh,
other parts of the world have already welcomed twenty twenty
six VJ.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
So we're we're behind the times already.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
And they've had some great celebrations other places, other countries.
They make out the fireworks.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
The whole nine yards Australia is the most beautiful one
I've seen posted so far.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Oh yeah, so you're seeing the ones.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Being posted too.
Speaker 5 (01:08):
I think I think we should have a world like
change on that. I think at the same time, it
should be on one clock I don't know if that
can happen. Yeah, I don't know if, like you know,
we can.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Make that happen. But it would just be cool if
it just changed.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
And I guess not because they say the Earth is round,
so it spins, it's not flat.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
This isn't flat. Well, I mean when I'm in the airplane,
it don't look like it curve off. It looks like
it keeps going straight. But who am I. I'm just
a sports talk radio guy.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
I just wish that would that would be cool because
it's like, wow, hold up, what part of the world
is that?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Oh wow?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Because I'm seeing New Year's Eve celebrations at like ten
o'clock this morning. Yeah, there's a day that's that's the
opposite side of the globe where it's already hitting midnight.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
So I mean, you know, it is what it is.
But the hour for you, huh yeah, hour for us?
Of course. Times Square just packed.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
They were interviewing a guy on Times Square talking about
how he's wearing a diaper because you can't go to
the bath You can't you can't go to the bathroom,
and you have to be there like twelve hours ahead
of the time if you leave to go to the bathroom.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
You lose your spot.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
And there's no Yeah, you take that hit a grave.
You don't tell nobody that you take that shit a grave.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
You know what. It's not worth it to me.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
I just, you know what, I'm gonna go to a bar,
have a good time, yea, and talk.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
To some women.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
I just try not to drink a lot of fluids
before you go.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
I mean, just ten hours, man, Come on, that's how
long they stand out there?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Ten hours? Oh yeah, they're two hell no, yeah or something.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, it's twenty twenty five, bro, this is not nineteen
eighty three. Like stop, I'm not standing, Arnie, I'm not standing. No,
damn weear for ten hours.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Yeah. But by the way, I don't care what it is.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
It is the two hundred and fiftieth year of our country.
So going into twenty twenty six.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
And making me stand nowhere for no damn what country birthday?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
It is?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Damn mine, no way it is. And it's cold out
there too. Wherever it's a little bit cold out of here.
We had some snow, so I think I'm gonna pass
on that. Also, I'm good, all right. We do have
a lot of football on this New Year's even getting
a lot of tweets night. So if you want to
tell us how you're listening and where you're listening, we
always love to hear from our listeners out there at
Big Vanilla Funny. I'm a stinking genius one, and we
(03:33):
know a lot of people don't go out and for
New Years A lot of people think it is amateur night.
As I told VJ, ninety five percent of the people
living on this planet will stay home and just enjoy
a movie or just listen to sports talk radio or
listen to us and just kind of relax and breaking.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
The New year.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
You know. I usually go out and get the the
what is it, the Martinelli's, the fake champagne, you know
what I'm talking about?
Speaker 5 (03:59):
Yeah, man, hees apple juice Earth Are you kidding me?
I get pissed when my kids drink mine. I bought you.
I brought you out a tree top. The tree top
is for you. Nelly's dadsallon. They must sell a lot
of those every year. Man. Oh yeah, sparkling stuffy, Yeah yeah, man,
you got drink that with a sandwich.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
I don't need to celebrate enough sandwiches. Some chips, no
I love it.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
So we do appreciate, uh, we know you have other options.
Appreciate you hanging out with us. And like we said,
so much going out of the world of sports. Had
Bowl games, say, even though they were mostly meaningless, had
to start with Miami at Ohio State. We'll go through
the other games for tomorrow, uh in a little bit,
because we got a lot a lot of coaching rumors
in the NFL. I don't know if you saw the
(04:45):
was it uh Stefanski and that if he gets fired,
that the Browns would be interested in getting McDaniel from
the Miami Dolphins. And well, you know, we'll touch on
all that, but first Miami wins it to beat Ohio
State VJ. To me, this is a colossal screwp by
Ohio State. This is a major upset.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
It was a ten point line.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
No way Ohio State should have watched this game, no
matter how bad Ryan Day, you know, called the game.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
And I never thought.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
That Miami, if they did win a game like this,
it was gonna be a low scoring game. I thought
if Miami would have to pull off the upset, it'd
be like thirty four thirty one, and they just got
hot and Beck took him apart. But that's not what happened.
He didn't have a great game on their one hundred
and fifty yards. If you told me that would have happened,
(05:36):
I said, well, they lost. They couldn't keep up with
Ohio State. I don't know what the fans are gonna
say about Ryan Day. Obviously it's gonna start all over again.
How you know this guy can't lead him to a championship?
He has once, so you know, I think it's just
the Buckeye fans living in a bad moment right now.
(05:57):
But this is a colossal screw up. This was a
bad loss for the Ohio State buckets.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
See this is how football works. Okay, ladies and gentlemen,
everybody put their earphones on. I'm gonna pull a Rod Parker.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Is this thing on? Is this thing on? All right? Listen?
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Football?
Speaker 3 (06:12):
One oh one.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
Stop the run, run the ball, attack the quarterback, protect
the quarterback, don't commit stupid penalties, don't turn the ball over,
and you'll win sixty nine percent of your football games.
You can go look that up. Okay, so who rushed
for more? Let's see one fifty three to forty five.
I can stop talking, right there. I can stop talking
right there once again, Ryan Day, Why is Julian saying
(06:37):
throwing the ball thirty five times but you're only running
it twenty four at times?
Speaker 3 (06:42):
No, I don't want to hear that.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
I don't want to hear that because in football, do you?
Speaker 7 (06:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:47):
But in football No, I'm not saying it to you personally,
just saying that to the football guy.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
That's all well, because I don't care. I from down fourteen,
one big run.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
It's a seven point game, right one big breakaway run
from these backs.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
You have these former five star, four star recruits.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
One big sixty five seventy yard gallup and it's a
seven point game, So you gotta keep running the football.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
You know what else it does?
Speaker 5 (07:10):
It keeps that defensive line off my quarterbacks. You know
what which he was running from his life all night tonight.
Baine Junior, who they're showing on the screen taking pictures
with fans and alumni right now, NFL are right there.
That's a legit man, right there, Big Cooper, that defensive
tackle right there. These are NFL guys, man. You gotta
get them and keep them off your quarterback. That's why
(07:30):
this falls on Ryan Dame you have all the power
to say, hey, put the ball.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
On the ground.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
They ran the ball Miami did thirty seven times. They
only told their quarterback to throw it twenty six times,
and he was nineteen or twenty six. Very efficient. Get
the ball out quick against this NFL style defense that
I mentioned.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Let's methodically move the ball down the field.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
And also Monty and I were talking during a commercial
break to pick six. That's called film watching that kid
that coin. He watched that play one hundred times in
the last eleven days. I guarantee it. He watched it
over and over and over and over. And when he
saw it, he said, I'm taking this to the house.
But Julian's saying, you have to check that corner. He
(08:14):
never checks the corner they see. If the corner backs out,
he just turns and he already made his mind up,
Arnie where he was going with the ball. That is
a critical quarterback mistake. Don't already have your mind made up.
That's what held too it back this year. I know
we'll get to some NFL stuff later in the show, right,
but you can't have your mind made.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Up at the quarterback position.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
If you see something you don't like, you gotta be
quick enough to pull that back and then go to
your second rate. He just turns and throws it. Go
look at the play. He never checks the corner. In
the corner takes a house the pick six.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
So Miami really with seventeen points. If you would have
told me Miami could only put seventeen points offensively, I'm like, well,
they're gonna lose forty thirteen.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Yeah, they're gonna lose eighty seventeen. That's what I would
have thought.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
Twenty eight, thirty to seventeen because, as you mentioned earlier
in this show, Ohio State's defense hadn't given him more
twenty points all year long until tonight.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Well twenty four, but yeah, seven came on the pick six.
It was Ohio State's offense. They were not to be found.
At least in the first they were getting clobbed. They
moved it in the second, but they were no points
to show for it, and then they came out like
gang busters in the third. By then, though, when it
was fourteen to seven, they let Miami moved the ball
down get some points, and they could never really get
(09:24):
back into it. Even though it was seventeen to fourteen
and it was in the fourth. They couldn't get that
ball back when it was that sixth minute mark right there.
Great job, great play calling by Miami to make sure
that they didn't have to give the ball back in
a compromising situation. This is a stunning upset VJ. Absolutely stunning.
(09:46):
I didn't see this one happening. I thought Ohio State
had this game every which way, even if they didn't
cover the ten points spread.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I didn't expect them to lose this game. VJ. Well, yeah,
I don't know how stunning the upset it is.
Speaker 5 (09:58):
I know people would pick ten points. Yeah, I took
my wife to spread game. I didn't like to spread
at Miami to cover. But that text you earlier, give
me the canes straight up, Like I was just taking
the cane straight up because in these type of Bowl games,
I like defense more than offensive stars because defense travels
and your offense can be off. It's like in the NBA, right,
if you have a top ten defense, that's for eighty
(10:19):
two games, right, But.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Offenses can come. You could just have a night where
you just can't hit a shot. Right.
Speaker 5 (10:24):
Some nights Steph goes three or twelve from three, correct,
And then some nights, he goes eight to fourteen, he's
probably gonna have more than eight to fourteen.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Than nine to fifteen nights.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
But if he ever has one of those two for
fourteen nights from three in a game five where series
is tied at two, do you think Golden State's gonna
win that game?
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Probably not so.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
In football, I like to look at that as far
as being able to run the football and defense. Always
say this about football, two things travel no matter where
you play a running game in defense, indoor, outdoor, sleek, hot, humid, snow,
rang don't matter. If I can run the ball, I
can run the ball if I have a great defense.
I got a great defense that goes anywhere. And they
(11:04):
took their running game and they took their defense to
the common ball. They took it to take look think
about it. Then this team just went at Texas A
and M, a team that people thought was the best
team in the nation right there with Ohio in.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
A very hostile environment, and that's time right and beat
them and beat them.
Speaker 5 (11:21):
But to go back to that last drive, that's that's
beating the team against their will.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Something you're someplace hockey, you're big.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
You guys are big hockey guys out there, and you're
and your son if he can feel this, and you're
a hockey guy, you can feel this.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Hockey and football are they're like the two man sports.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
You know why because it's me because no, no, no, this
is this is really because it's physically me versus you,
not dribbling, not swinging the club, swinging.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
A bad no no, no, no no no.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
My body against your body for four quarters? Can you
keep hitting me or me hitting you over and over
and over and over, and sooner or later somebody breaks.
Same in Howey and White right there, they said, Okay,
let's go ahead and put this game away.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
We're not gonna throw nothing.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
We're gonna run the ball right in your face, down
the field, score and put the game away. You know
what's coming and there's nothing you can do about it.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
We want to hear what you thought about the game
between Miami and Ohio State. You could tweet us at
big Vanilla funny. I'm a stinking genius one, so I'm
dying to hear what you guys have to say. Also,
where are you listening to us from? And how are
you listening? Bruce said, good evening, fellas from.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Bell Air, Maryland. He did a lot of DV.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
He did a little coffee rubbed filets on the grill,
pan seared scallops.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
This is your kind of guy, okay, because you see
he know that's how we do for the DNV. So
I'm doing grilled fil ats myself, red wine marinated grill
filets that are marinate in the fridge right now. And
I'm also doing grilled lobster tails with some bacon wrap shrimp.
So that's what we're doing in the Yeah, that's what
you're doing in the Husky House. And ain't some fried
Chris Pye potatoes. That's what we're doing in the Husky
House the night for New Year's Eve.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Baby, all right, Uh, we.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
Got three other games tomorrow. By the way, do you
like one game today? Three tomorrow?
Speaker 3 (13:06):
You prefer? Maybe two? And two doesn't bother you?
Speaker 5 (13:09):
No, no, no, give me three on New Year's Day
because tomorrow You're right, We're off New.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Year's Night doing nothing.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
I'm laying around with my babies man looking at the
Christmas tree for the last days. I'm gonna watch Trading
Places later tonight. That's my New Year's Eve movie.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Every year that was what the season finale tonight? Right?
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (13:24):
No, no trading places that Eddie Murdherroy eighty three, Jamie
Lee Curtis.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
I'm sorry, I'll be confused, because what's the big Stranger Things?
Speaker 5 (13:34):
I don't watch none of that. I don't watch that,
don't any of comedy bro That's all I watch.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Well, the only reason I bring it up is because
today was tonight's the finale of Stranger Things Is and
I guess it broke down?
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Shut down Netflix? Do you don't watch that?
Speaker 5 (13:50):
Alex breeding Is sder Things? Do you guys watch this?
Should I be on that? I know it's populars hell.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
I gave up after like season three. There was just
too much time in between each season.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
I just couldn't Game of Thrones because I never watched that,
but my wife didn't. Everyone I knew watch They were
look at me like like it was I was looking
down upon because I didn't watch Game of Thrones.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
But I binge Game of Thrones after it was over,
so I'm probably not. I do look down at you
a little bit for not watching Game of.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Really a little bit, all right, I don't watch it.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
I did just finish Sopranos and I got to like
season four sand Sons of Anarchy, So I did pick
those up.
Speaker 7 (14:26):
Good, Yeah, I did pick those up. So to answer
your question real quick, Stranger Things is worth it. Really,
there's a reason to binge it if you do watch
it with an open mind and digest the purpose of
what it's trying to portray. The finale, I understand why
everybody's hyped for it because they've built up so well,
better deliver.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
Okay, well that's why. And the other one I keep
hearing about squit of the Games.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I haven't seen that. Okay, well I love that. Do
you watch that? Are you joking over?
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Oh yeah, okay, that's being serious. I I love that.
My wife thinks it's just way too dark, and it
is dark, but it is.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
It is good. I like it based on real stuff.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Rich people watching poor people do stuff.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Come on.
Speaker 5 (15:04):
Yeah, gods, skyboxes these days tell me wrong.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Here go on.
Speaker 4 (15:13):
But yeah, I just saw I saw that Stranger Things.
So many people watching it. Netflix had a problem. But
uh uh yeah that's some things. Yeah yeah, so many
people watch that show, I guess. So yeah, get a
hold of us. Tell you how are you listening and
where are you're listening at Big Vanilla Funny, I'm astinking
(15:35):
genius one. We'll get to the other three games. I
keep promising that night we will get to it coming
up next segment. Because I I think it's good.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
But the only thing I don't like VJ is the
non home games. I don't like these neutral sites in
the quarterfinals. The atmosphere was so electric in the first round.
Games would have loved the scene games. I'm the home
site of Indiana. They can't do that, though.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
Why is that because you can't take away the cotton, roll,
sugar and fiesta.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Unless you can't. Well, that was part of my thing.
I said last hour that I get rid of the
bowl games. You can't get rid of those that maybe
you could use it later on. I just don't think
it serves a purpose anymore.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
No, it does.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
It does like the cotton first of all, that the
Cotton Bowl is a big bowl. It may not be
the rose, may not be the sugar or the orange.
I think the Fiesta's right there with it, But that
the Cotton Bowl. You go back to the sixties and seventies. Man,
when like Oklahoma, Nebraska and Tom Osbourne and those guys
were killing people in the Cotton Bowl SMU, you know
with with their team that they had back to the
day with Eric Dickerson and Craig James and those guys
(16:41):
you know you used to want to get to because
it's in Texas, it's in Dallas.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Dallas is a big city. Ask your question, you kids,
take that was tonight the Cotton Bowl? Oh wait wait
was it be finished? Was tonight the Cotton Bowl? Or
was tonight the first round of the quarter final playoff game?
You tellt me it was the quarterfinal Cotton right, I
don't consider it is the the Cotton Bowl and it's
a bowl game.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
I consider the first round of the next round of
the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
Play not the Cotton Bowl, the Rose Bowl with the
Orange Bowl.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
I don't question.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Where's Alabama and Indiana playing No more, They're they're playing
at uh there in Pasadena.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
There's the Rose But I don't but I don't consider
the I don't consider the Rose Bowl game.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
You know it no matter what you consider?
Speaker 4 (17:28):
Man, it just.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Right.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
But only because it's the next round of the.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
My credential says Rose Bowl on it doesn't say well,
it says uh, you know, quarterfinal CFP but above the
main words on the credential says Rose Bowl.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
I bet you more of our listeners think of it
as the next round of the playoffs than a you know,
typical Rose Bowl game.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
Let's throw it out there and ask them. I I'll
say that our listeners right now will go with me
and say, no, man, that's still the Rose Bowl is
because they're gonna say the Rose Bowl prevented by such
and such as such, this is the college football. They're
going to start the broadcast off by saying, like, right now,
if you look on the screen on your computer ont
ESPN dot com and says college football playoff quarterfinal at
(18:12):
the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, right, Like, it's still the
it's still the Cotton Bowl.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Clubs right, it's still the Cotton Bowl. But I don't
consider it the bowl game.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
Like you mentioned, well you had like ten years ago
fifty which is why, which is why I said, let's
get rid of the bowl games. Let's have back on
the home sites for the quarterfinals.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
It would have been electric.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
Matter of fact, I'd have home sites for all the
games except for the championship.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Well you know what I would NFL has it way.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
Okay, that's fine if you do that, but that doesn't
mean you get rid of a bowl game.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
You just have to send other teams to go play
those bowl games.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
But do you think the Orange Bowl or do you
think the Tostitos people of the Fiesta Bowl. You think
that CEO wants Tulane in SMU in that game.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
No, Abstely and not.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
He wants Ohio State versus Alabama or Michigan versus Texas
like he wants that game there because that's going to
bring in the advertising dollars, in the advertising money. So
the ball games aren't going anywhere, Arnie. You always want
to get rid of something. Man, you talked about a
one day in preseason in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
Not that I want to get rid of it. I
just want to move along with the times. I'm not
gonna be stuck back fifty years ago. Matter of fact,
we'll come back. We'll give you the latest lines of
the three games tomorrow. We'll get to the three games
tomorrow and you could comment on that too. All that
coming up next. VJ Husky, Arnie Spaan, you're filling in

Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (20:29):
We got the big upset in the first game of
the quarterfinals. Were the Miami Hurricanes. A Hurricanes loving this
one beat the buck Eys of Ohio State twenty four fourteen.
And you're happy to being a Michigan man. I know
(20:49):
you're astatic right now, tweet portnoying, You're happy.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
I've been tweeting and talking trash do every commercial break
since this game ended.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Are you kidding me? Absolutely?
Speaker 5 (20:58):
I love seeing this, seeing these these guys go down
like this, lost in Indiana in the Big Ten championship game,
and not lose their first playoff game, lost their last
two after being defended national champions, picked.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
The repeat and do it all over again.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
Of course, I like seeing them getting their ass handed
to him like this tonight, scoring fourteen points from this
high powered offense. Because Ryan Day, who's such a great coach, Yes,
decided to have his quarterback through thirty five and only
must have forty three yards rushing on the ground. I
always thought, once he took the team over, the one
thing I give Urban Meyer and right a big Urban
Meyer fan, the one thing I give him know is
that when he coached Ohio State, they were physically tough.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Like they were tough.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
He put some guys in the NFL in that front
seven on the offensive line year in and year out.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
I always felt and Ryan, they took it over. They tried.
They became a pretty team. Like what are they known for?
Right now?
Speaker 5 (21:46):
Their wide receiver you right, look at all the wide
receiver right all their wide receivers that are in the NFL.
I thought the same thing happened to LSU when Saban
was there, when Les Miles was there. They were physical, attacking, running,
physical upfront teams. Then they started throwing the ball around
a lot. They became more pretty. So you get a
number one overall picking Joe Burrow at the quarterback position.
(22:08):
You start to throw a bunch of receivers in the league,
and then they were being called wide receiver you. But
sooner or later, what happens. The toughness went away. They
weren't winning the big games. They were still winning ten
eleven games, but they weren't winn national championships anymore, and
they weren't going far as far and winning their bowl
games and things of that nature. I'm seeing the same
thing with Ohio State. They just look like a pretty
and a finesse team other than the power Big ten
(22:31):
that we're used to seeing. And that's why he loses
games like this, puts up fourteen points, all.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Right, We're gonna go through the other three games.
Speaker 4 (22:36):
I just wanted to finish up what we talked about
before we went to the break, where and I guess
a couple of the listeners are like, no, leave them alone,
leave the balls the way they are. Gunner says, it's
the Cotton Bowl. Nothing changes. Bowl games are memorable. No
Bowl games leave. It's not that I want things to leave, VJ.
But things do change. Like we're having a playoff and
now we're gonna go sooner or later, it's gonna go
(22:59):
to a six to twenty four and I think we'll
stop at twenty four for a while. And I'm okay
with all that because things change, and I'd like to
have more teams involved in the playoff system.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
That's why I think we have to mix it up
a little bit. We don't have to.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Use the capital one, the rolls or the sugar or
anything like that. We have a playoff, call it what
you want, round one, round two, like we do in
March Madness, the Sweet Sixteen, the Playing Game, the Thursday,
play the Tuesday. I don't care what you call it.
It's round one really what it is for me.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
VJ. So again, I we're gonna have changes anyway.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
So I think we have to get rid of a
lot of these meaningless ball games.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
People you know.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
ESPN says they're not being watched They're not meaningless.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
You keep calling them back.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
It is meaningless for the any First of all, the
kids are opting out.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
So for a lot of the kids, kids opt out. There.
The coaches even opt out too.
Speaker 5 (23:53):
I'll be coaches opting out. There's still coaches on the sideline. Yeah,
some coaches opting out because there might be some some
paramoil there. They might be looking for a new job.
But like I said, these teams are still fielding players.
They're still putting players. Have you let me ask you
a question, how many boll games? Just estimate y'all don't
know if you know the exact number. How many Bowl
games have you watched this year?
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Yes, I would say I probably watched about half of that.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
Okay, you're telling me these games haven't been competitive. You're
telling me these kids haven't been playing hard out here.
These coaches haven't been coaching. And when they win, the
joy and jubilation you see on their faces holding up
whatever trophy the game, you know, whatever trophy they win,
and when they even show during commercial break.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
So earlier this.
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Week, when the team arrived, they they've been on the
community hunt too. So they went to the Cancer Research
Children's Hospital or the pinch stripe ball at Yankee Stadium.
Some of the players from I forget who played the
Penn State and Clemson right, some went the ring ring,
the the what's the bell? The bell there for the
stock market? Like that's remember that kid would never be
able to do that, Arnie if he didn't play at
(24:56):
that school and they didn't go to that bowl.
Speaker 9 (24:57):
You know.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
And when you bring up some of that, I understand
and that that's nostalgic stuff, that it's part, it's part
of the process. But when I mean meaningless, like I
heard the guys talking about USC and TCU. First of all,
I've never heard of a game being broken down without
mentioning the winning team. In TCU, all I heard was
USC choked. How could they not have missed three tackles?
(25:18):
How could they give up third and twenty? How could
they do that? You would have you would against said
they didn't play anybody?
Speaker 3 (25:24):
But yeah, so what because I mean I watched that,
But we don't break down the games.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
Are we gonna bring up Tennessee, Illinois?
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Of course?
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Not Coastal Carolina and Louisiana Tech. No, because but if
they were in the playoffs, we'd be bringing them up.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
No, we won't bring them up because it's Coastal Carolina,
tynes See. You can bring up because when people start
talking about Joshhipel's job later this offseason, they're gonna go
back to they didn't beat any top ranked teams in
the SCC and this time.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
But they're not about the game.
Speaker 6 (25:52):
This game was.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
So it doesn't matter though, But because they played in
that bowl game because lane, because USC had a linebacker
who couldn't tackle one hundred and eighty pound running that
was last night and overtime, and the second defender didn't
even attempt.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
To throw a shoulder or throw your body at this guy.
Speaker 5 (26:13):
You wait until he got even with you, then try
to turn on the jets and reach out. No, that's
gonna go on tape it to the offseason. USC has
the number one recruiting class. They ended up with the
number one class. They loaded up on four stars and
threw a few five stars in there to balance that
class out there.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
Who's fault, by the way, Notre Dame USC. Who's fault
is that it's leaking USC.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Hey, listen here, here's my thing with that.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
It's nobody's fault but college football NCUBA They should have
put their foot in Notre Dame's ass twenty five thirty
years ago. Get in a conference. Get in a conference,
or you're not playing in no ball games. You don't
qualify for the national championship. They could have stopped this.
(27:00):
Nordre Dame is one of those schools. And I don't
fault them because I'm a guy that says, listen, if
you got power. I get why people will did because
it makes things happen.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
And it moves in America.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Nordre Dame is norm whether you like them or not,
or Nordre Dame's over rate, Go go look at the
ratings when Nord d They're like the Dallas Cowboys when
Nordre Dame's on TV. There's a reason why they have
their own network deal, right for any of these universities
had a network deal. They've had the NBC deal for
about forty years. They got like their Notre Dame, so
they could kind of smug their nose and go, you
(27:32):
know what, we don't want to play you anymore. You
don't want to play this anymore? Okay, no problem.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
I mean, there was no lot suggested.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Why should anybody schedule no schedule them yeah, but that's
what you do.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
But then now you're talking collusion, right, well you can
do that.
Speaker 4 (27:46):
Yeah, but you know it's not best interest of college
football though it really is.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
No, it's not.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
It's you take if that's like taking the Yankees out
of baseball, taking Duke Carolina out of college basketball, taking
you know, Dallas out of out of the NFL.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Yeah, you gotta make note you they played the San
Jose States.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Of the world. No, nobody really wants to see that.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
Nobody won't because the money nor to Dame.
Speaker 5 (28:08):
No, here's the thing. They got the kind of money.
They can still schedule big schools like they got that
kind of money because hey, listen, if you play us,
you know we'll get fifteen million. We'll pay you twenty million.
Like they have that kind of money to just throw
around to get what what program is gonna say, No,
we don't want your.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
To top programs in the power in the Power fives
don't have to sell.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
Well, they still get plenty of money and they don't
want to. They already played nine conference games.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
But that that was just some of the talk from
Joel Klatt and some of the guys out there.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
We gotta come back.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
We gotta go ahead, get to the other three games
first though, quick check in with mons, see what's trending
out there?
Speaker 3 (28:46):
What's going on? MONSI? Yeah, say your last name?
Speaker 6 (28:50):
Right? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Okay? All right? Who messed it?
Speaker 4 (28:54):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (28:54):
I remember in their mind.
Speaker 9 (28:55):
Kelvin Washington, because he definitely messed up. I don't even
know what he said.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
It's not like blown you say, his whole government. You
don't go Kelvin, you don't go Rob Vick. Oh yeah, Washington?
Speaker 9 (29:07):
Yeah, yeah, yes, I do, in fact, in fact, you
know what I'm saying. Yeah, No, but he definitely did.
But after saying it right millions of times, he still
butchered it.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
So we'll never let him live it down.
Speaker 9 (29:21):
Well, we won't let him live it down, don't you worry.
I don't know if we're gonna let Ryan Day and
Ohio State live it down anytime soon, you guys. But
ten seed Miami with the upset over the Buckeyes, the
defending national champion, coming down on top twenty four to
fourteen in a game where where Carson Beck only threw
for one hundred and thirty eight yards and a touchdown.
(29:43):
The Hurricanes defense came ready to play two interceptions a
pick six in the first half. That second interception on
Julian Sane came in the final drive when Ohio State
was trying to do something in the final minute, but
down ten points, the game was over. Miami advanced to
the quarterfinal, to the semifinals, just like we all thought,
(30:03):
not really, not really right what happened earlier today though,
in the other games. If you don't want to hear this, VJ,
plug your ears, because Arch Manning put on a show
against your Michigan team. In the Citrus Bowl, he threw
for two hundred and twenty one yards two touchdowns. He
also rushed for one hundred and fifty five yards and
two touchdowns. Texas defeats Michigan forty one to twenty seven.
Iowa knocked off Vanderbilt and the RelA Quests Bowl thirty
(30:25):
four to twenty seven. In the Las Vegas bl Utah
roll pass Nebraska forty four to twenty two, and then
the Sun Bowl, Duke prevailed over Arizona State forty two
to thirty nine. A couple of NBA scores the Spurs
good news, guys, because Victor one Banyama suffered a slight
hyper extension in his left knee. Initial tests, though came
back negative, showed no major injury, and the Spurs, who
(30:46):
were down nineteen, came back to beat the next one
thirty four to one thirty two win when Victor went Banyama,
despite playing not playing most of the fourth quarter, ended
with thirty one points and thirteen rebounds. The Nuggets, playing
without Nicola Jokic, survived one o six to one oh
three against the Raptors. Pallo Bancaro hit the go ahead
shot with like seven seconds left and the Magic defeated
the Pacers went twelve to one ten, where Banco ended
(31:08):
with his own double double twenty nine points and ten rebounds.
The Cavs snapped the Sun's four game winning streak sorry Brie.
One twenty nine to one thirteen was the final score there.
Donovan Mitchell led the way with thirty four points. Bulls
they rolled past the Pelicans one thirty four to one eighteen.
The Wizards edged the Bucks one fourteen to one thirteen
despite thirty plus points from Giannis, and the thunder Cruise
(31:28):
passed the Trailblazers one twenty four to ninety five. Steph
Curry had twenty six points. The Warriors outscored the Hornets
won thirty two to one twenty five, and the Hawks
topped the Timberwolves one twenty six to one oh two.
Not sure if you guys saw this, but Anthony Edwards
with like seven minutes left in the fourth quarter left
the bench because he was mad that coach Finch benched
all the starters.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
At that point, Atlanto was up one oh nine to eighty.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
He left. Wow, never came back. He did not speak
to the media.
Speaker 9 (31:54):
He had thirty points in the game.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
You want to beat the traffic, y, Yeah, sure, that's.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
What it is. That's what it is.
Speaker 9 (31:59):
And coach Finch offer he's obviously after the game said
he should have come back, but he never did. When
it comes to the NHL, the Avalanche are just crushing
the Blues six to one is the score, ninety seconds
to go in the third period, Flames over the Flyers
four to one halfway through the third period, and still
early in the third period as the Bruins lead the
Oilers right now five to one.
Speaker 5 (32:19):
Back to you rear me quick about and Edwards and
he's done shows. When Martin and I had our Saturday
show and all say this about him he's an extreme talent. Yeah,
but he just always strikes me number one as a
me guy. And he could either be Dwayne Wade or
he was going to end up like a Brandon Roy
or Jah Morant type of player, where he tried to
(32:40):
make himself a character and a superstar. And I like
it when it's organic, when you just kind of morph
into it, Like I think Winby's gonna show us more
personality as his career goes on. I thought Aunt went
for it. But when you start pulling moves like this,
you already got to coach fired, right, got the extension,
got the Max Delle. Now he's trying to pull power
play and just pouty moves like this, like Draymond leaving
(33:02):
the bench the other night to Jimmy cur I just
sent Draymond home like too straight, Like you're.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Suspending two seasons, just really quickly. It's not it's now,
it's it's starting. Yeah, just Mark, just remember it's starting.
Speaker 9 (33:19):
I will tell you the thing with with Anthony Edwards,
I feel I feel like he cares sometimes and.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
That's not good enough.
Speaker 5 (33:27):
Correct when you're the franchise guy, if you're the if
you're if you're an Awkwadman or you're flast you cannot
show up, But damn it, Batman and Superman gotta be
at all to fight, right and Batman wonder Woman got.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
To be at all to be Batman. Not handle the No,
you're green.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
Leonard, dude, and no one saw that movie. You're Daredevil,
no one saw that movie.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
But you're Superhero. You're superhero. Nobody saw great, you've seen
all thirty seven Batman.
Speaker 9 (33:54):
I like I like this.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
I like how that's it.
Speaker 9 (33:56):
That's it, the green lantern, that's it.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Thank you here for the next hour. By the way,
Paul Bill's Maffia says Happy New Year. He's outside of Buffalo,
New York, visiting his parents and siblings. He spent the
day arguing with his whole high school buddies over whether
the Bills should fire Sean McDermott.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
He's for the pro pink slip.
Speaker 4 (34:18):
We're gonna get a lot of NFL in a lot
of coaches on the hot seat.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
What do you think of that? What do you thinking that?
Speaking that one real quick? Aren't you?
Speaker 2 (34:24):
No?
Speaker 3 (34:24):
I Thoughtott? No, I think you keep him.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
Look, I know that people are Bill's fans think that
the next best coach is out there, and you know,
maybe there is if Tomlin gets fired, or you want
a McDaniel or you know who the heck you want
Pete Carroll, Tomas not getting fired. Hell, But I'm just saying,
if you want to, you know, go on to another coach.
But but the grass isn't always greener in this situation.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
They lose in the first round in the playoffs, does
your opinion change?
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Maybe it may change.
Speaker 5 (34:56):
They lose by six in the wildcar round, because that's
what they're gonna be because the Patriots already have the
home game. They go on the road, they lose by six,
and it just it just doesn't look like Josh Allen
plays Superman but just doesn't have enough. There's some coaching
things you can point to. Do you start to think
about it more and change your opinion.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
Oh, I think it is still being considered. You know,
I just wouldn't do it. Though I wouldn't do it.
There's too many coachest unless there's a time when I
could figure out how to get But then again, it's
not like he's you know, taking him to a bunch
of flores.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Maybe up in Minnesota. That's the big name being flooded
right now.
Speaker 5 (35:36):
Yeah, yeah, he said, he said he's enjoyed his tom
in Minnesota. But I do believe if another team comes calling.
You know, he didn't get it right in he didn't
get it, you know, right in Miami. But you know,
try it again.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Well, come back, let's finish out the hour. Of course,
the VJ Husky Arnie Spaniard right here on Fox Sports
or radio. VJ Husky Arnie Spaniard for Jason Smith and
Mike Harmon right here on Fox Sports Radio show. You
just flying on by tonight, You want to send us
a tweet, real simple, big vanilla funny.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
I'm a stinking genius. One. You go to the game tomorrow,
by the way, you go to the Alabama Indiana.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
Game, I planned on it. Credential is good, but not
if it's gonna rain. It's storming out here, man.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
And it's also to get worse tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (36:22):
And if you've never been to the Rose ball there's
no cover walking there, walking from even in the stadium itself.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
Press box.
Speaker 5 (36:31):
Yeah, but then you want to kind of go walk
around the field like whenever I do ball, right, I
always get there like two and a half three hours early.
If my credential allows me to walk the field. That's
always my favorite thing to do because I like to
see the players, like see like who's locked in watching
them warm up, Like you get a you know, you
get a size of guys man. Like the first Charger
game I ever did, I go down and do a
pregame on the field and and Justin Herbert walks by me.
(36:54):
I had no idea he was that damn big. I
had no idea he was legitimately six five five two thirty.
I didn't I knew he was a tall and he's
a big quarterback, but when you see him in person,
you're like, wow, no wonder you could take the punishment
on television. I watch you take because you're not a
small guy. You're built to take this type of punishment.
So if it's raining, it's just gonna it's gonna kind
(37:15):
of the show.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
Could you just wear a raincoat? Just throwing a rain front?
You see my pitches online, Man, I know you're fresh
and all this. I know how I show.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
Could you imagine me trying to be fresh with a
damn poncho on at the Rose Bowl?
Speaker 3 (37:27):
How can I be fresh with a poncho on?
Speaker 4 (37:29):
Now what first time? Is it like twenty years are
gonna have rained like this or what? Nah?
Speaker 5 (37:33):
Oh yeah, yeah, the rolls and that's the thing. It'll
rain all week and for some reason in La Man,
the rose ball comes and the clouds open up and
it's always a nice, beautiful sunny day goes into the night.
But tomorrow it's supposed to be raining worse than it
is today all day tomorrow. So if that's the case, no,
I'm not going. I much rather just hit a home
with Cameron and Journey and my wife is just chill man.
(37:55):
It's just honestly, sit on the couch, have a few
SIPs on Daddy SIPs, and just watch the all three
games in a row on the sofa.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
They were landing in Lax today. Somebody put a video
of the plane had a lot of Indiana Hoosier fans on.
The plane was backed and they played the fight song
for the Hoosier fans as they were landing at Lax.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
So I thought that was pretty cool, you know.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
I up with the air wides get into the spirit
of things knowing that there's a bunch of fans on
the fight so good for them.
Speaker 5 (38:23):
Right down in the cars, drive around with flags on
it and stuff all week long. They've been out here
Indiana and Bama fans have been out here for about
four five days.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
Yeah, unfortunately, they're gonna get bad weather. We never have
bad weather on New Year's in southern Californaforia, had not
since I've been here. I've been here twenty years a
couple of years ago. But just like a drizzle or something.
But other than that, never get rains like this. Like
I was watching on TV, it looks like it's what
rating right.
Speaker 5 (38:48):
Now, rizz It's nasty and it's and it's that kind
of and I'm in the valley right now, so you
kind of getting flooding too, because it's a valley, right
so when the rain dumps in here, the draining system
isn't the best. It is like back East, where you
don't never really worry about flood unless you go down south.
But uh, it's a I just hope it doesn't affect
the game.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
I was.
Speaker 5 (39:07):
I don't see this game be affected by weather tomorrow.
That's that's more or less than me standing out in
the rain is watching two great teams.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
I think Bama wins. I know it's a seven point.
Uh oh wow. Yeah, man, I love I love this
Bama team.
Speaker 5 (39:21):
I really do. Kayla de bor is a really good coach.
Bama has just that. I just I don't believe in
Indiana and I haven't all year long. They didn't have
to play Michigan. They didn't have to play uh. They
they did go and beat Oregon. They did go out
to Alton and beat Oregon and Eugene, and they beat
Ohio State. But we saw what Ohio State was tonight. Right,
So you get to this game tomorrow. They haven't played
(39:42):
in a month. Man, It's it's been almost a good
month since they've played.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
And Bama. Bama's physical upfront.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
Harney, Yeah, yeah, matter of fact, what will do is
will go over all the lines the Oregon Texas Tech game, Alabama, Indiana,
Georgia Mississippi in a rematch, a game that Mississippi actually
led by nine, eating the third going into the fourth,
Georgia with a comeback in that.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
So we'll get to that.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
We gotta get to the NFL final week of the
NFL season.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
I got a big problem.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
I'll tell you what that big problem in the NFL
is that's coming up next. It's a VJ Husky, Arnie
Spaniard right here on Fox Sports Radio,
